I'm going to be playing our party's First Aid kit (Healer) in an upcoming game, I wanted to know if Favored Soul or Cleric was better. Thanks for your imput.

It hurts me to hear that, considering everything else a cleric could be doing. But a cleric is most likely better, because of spontaneous healing. I recommend the Radiant Servant of Pelor prestige class (Complete Divine).

so, what are some of these other things a cleric can be really good for? I've only played a cleric once before and he was primarily a healer too so I'm a Newb in for this class...

A cleric can out-fight the fighter and barbarian, and still maintain his spellcasting ability. He can completely shut down most arcane casters. Take a look at Divine Power, Divine Favor, and Righteous Might.

If you have a few non-core books, it gets even more fun. Divine Metamagic, Persistant Spell... It gets bad, and it gets bad quickly.

Thing is, I'm not interested in making a battle-pope...

A first-aid kit is a perfectly valid character concept, especially in a larger party.

I would say Cleric over FS because of the breadth of spells known. If your FS doesn't have, say, remove blindness known, the party is out of luck if you're caught without an item to remove it. The cleric can always rest for the night and prepare it in the morning.

But if you really want to play up the healing aspect, take a look at the healer class from the Miniatures Handbook, if you have access to it.

What I meant by first-aid kit was that I was going to be the only one who could heal. We're going to have a Ninja, A Hexblade, A fighter, A (Undecided, most likely Warlock) since I liked being a cleric last time I played one, I thought I'de do it again.

It is important to have a character who is able to heal and is played correctly as one in order to make the best possible party. A cleric can be a very deadly fighter but I think they do better when they support the whole party.

If you want to do the fighting thing, I actually prefer the favored soul -- I think that they make good self-buff and attack characters.

:u: If you're really going to ignore most of the cleric's (or even favored soul's) potential to do nothing but heal, consider the Healer from the Miniatures Handbook, though with the typical housefix a lot of people on these boards use: change the Healer to a spontaneous caster that automatically knows all of the spells on her class list (like a warmage or dread necromancer), and who only uses Cha as her spellcasting stat, instead of being split between Cha and Wis. :g:

No turn undead = no Divine Metamagic. ^^

Seriously, though, I commend you for being able to play a character that's almost nothing but a healer. Remember, though, there are many other things that can be done. Summoning is an excellent alternative to swinging the old warhammer.

And as far as the Healer is concerned... I never, ever understood that class. It's like they wanted to create a less offensive cleric, so they nerfed it, looked at what was left, shrieked, and renerfed it. ^^

a cleric of Pelor (healing/sun) is a good firstaid kit/getting rid of pesky undead. Then give him a longspear and let him fight from the second rank.

"Flavored Soul?" "Battle-Pope?" :P

Would that make a Rogue/Cleric a "Pope on a Rope"?

I agree with most of the other posts. I like the Flavored Soul more, but a Cleric is a better healer, since you can prepare other spells you could use, and simply spontaneous change them to healing spells if needed.
