Cleric's Challenge? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I know that DungeonMaster has been running excellent challenge threads for the last several months and I was waiting to for a chance to try my hand at the Cleric's Challenge whenever he got around to it. However i find myself in the dead middle of summer with entirely too much free time on my hands. So here is what i propose, although i do not believe myself to be a master storyteller (though I am improving) I will agree to run a Cleric's Challenge similar to the Wizard's and Warrior's Challenges currently run by Dungeon Master.
If anyone tells me they are interested I will post my requirements for entries otherwise I will scrap the idea and patiently await Dungeon Master's.
Oh, And if it turns out many people like the idea I will initally accept ONLY the first four and continue from there.

What ruleset? I assume standard 3.0...

Oh and someone should've done a Sorc challenge.
Sashiel

07-12-04, 11:31 AM
Yeah, Core 3.0
Standard wealth at 9th level spent however the heck you want. As for stats. . . i am leaning towards 28 point buy. . . will get back to you
Derlwyn

07-12-04, 03:32 PM
I'd be up for a cleric's challenge!
I would have to get my hands on the 3.0 SRD though, but that shouldn't be a prob.
Does anyone have a link for it though?:D

As for abilities, I think a point buy is cool, but what about the standard array (15,14,13,12,10,8...I think).
Sashiel

07-12-04, 04:27 PM
Standard Array is all well and good and you are free to use it as a base if you like. Personally i like characters to have a little more control over their character. I know that point buy can lead to extreme min-maxing but then again, that means characters have serious weaknesses too and though i do not aim to target the characters weakest aspect, i will try and test created characters in multiple ways at the same time (if possible). Further i would like to point out that standard array is worth 25 points and i am proposing a 28 point buy. . . that plus the two level ups should provide decently powered characters with a mildly better chance of surviving. As for the 3.0 SRD i have not yet found it, i dont need to, however i believe there is a link to it in both of DungeonMaster's challenge threads. . . if i find one i will post it here.

Also, are we allowed any non-core 3.0 material?
I think Sword and Fist, Complete Divine, and Defenders of the Faith are 3.0. Is complete Warrior 3.5 or 3.0? I always get confused.

Oh, and are you going to use rolls, or just use averages?
Also, I am assuming that we have the standard 36,000 gp to spend, correct?
Chaotica Maxima

07-12-04, 05:08 PM
IIRC Correctly both Complete Warrior and Completely Divine are 3.5. DotF and MotW arent ofcourse, and same goes for S&F n.n;
Chaotica Maxima

On another note, I'd be quite interested in entering myself.
Note the level and what exactly we can and cant use, and I'll be off to create!

07-13-04, 03:22 AM
Sashiel, you should keep the standard stat array. If you look at the other challenges, the idea was to see wether a class, based on it's class abilities alone, can overcome a challege based on its challenge rating.

That's why the standard stat array and the averaging of dice rolls. It minimizes someone winning based solely on obscene min/maxing and/or pure luck.
Sashiel

07-13-04, 12:03 PM
Okay. As previously stated you do recieve standard wealth (36,000) however i allow ONLY standard 3.0 CORE material. Upon reflection Standard array would be more balanced, however i have never 1. Seen anyone use standard array under point buy or 2. Seen rolls anywhere near resembling standard array.
Further as i stated earlier, if someone is going to completely boost one score off of the charts it will significantly hamper them in other areas (assuming you have to spend 16 out of 28 points to get an 18 that means scores could end up 18, 10, 10, 10, 10, 10). Further i havent yet seen anyone win a CR 9 encounter that is properly played anyway.
As for rolls, i was planning on using average rolls for damage, hitpoints, spell effects etc, but was planning on either
1. Rolling myself, which is easier for me but requires the participants to trust me to be unbiased.
or
2. Finding an online rolling system which i would have to reaccess every time (I cant download one, the computers i use are free for me but do not allow me to save on them)
In any event those rolls were going to be used for attack rolls, saving throws, skills (if anyone ever uses them).
Level is going to be 9, i figured the only benefits to raising the level occur at going to twelve which i really dont like so 9 it is.

If i get to many complaints about this not being standard array and therefore not balanced i will switch it so that players recieve scores of (16,14,14,12,10,8) which is 28 point buy but really close to standard array (which is 25 and generally results in fairly low-powered characters. . . my idea is to not only test clerics but also improve MY dming skills (i think i can do both and still make this an adequate thread) so i prefer characters i might actually see in a game.

Each cleric will get two encounters of CR 9, if they win one and lose the other i will add a third otherwise it is two strikes and you are eliminated.

Further i have noticed that the other challenge threads have so far been only monsters, i do not promise this, although i do promise to not use dragons, do not be surprised if you actually fight a PC race. . . i consider those fair game.

As I said, i will accept only the first four entries for now. Once i have Four that is IT. If the thread is actually popular and people decide they want to join in they may take the current total up to four. (That is to say if two people have already gone and there are two remaining, two more may join)

That is all I can think of for now
So far i have
1. Derlywn
2 Chaotica Maxima

(Oh, and i would be seriously impressed if anyone built a decent Half-Orc Cleric I have not yet seen it done, but do not take this as a suggestion for a player, simply a side comment on my gaming history)

Hope to hear from you soon
Derlwyn

I will hopefully have my build up either today, or tomorrow. I am just working on some last minute tweaking!

This is really crazy too, I am actually using a half-orc as his race!

So can we use the 28 Point buy, or would you rather us use your array (16,14,14,12,10,8)? Im good either way! Anywho, I'm just finishing up my character so hopefully it will be up soon and we can get this show on the road!

I am having a hard time finding 3.0 potions and such. Ah well!
Sashiel

07-13-04, 03:22 PM
Hmm, half-orc cleric (oh and i will ask that you at least name the deity though i do prefer standard. . . gives me more of a reason for your cleric to be in any particular situation) anyway, i am saying 28 point buy. . . if i recieve a lot of people complaining that 28 point buy is entirely too freeing, i will switch but for now, straight up 28 point buy. As for potions tell me what you are looking for and i can post up their cost (or inexistance in some cases)

B]You recieved a summons for aid from a seculded shrine to the honored St. Cuthbert a few weeks ago. Due to a rather substantial group of thieves operating in your town at the time you could not answer that call immediately. Yesterday you recieved an urgent message from that same shrine pleading for assitance and so you set off immediately. You had not yet reached the shrine when a man came barreling down the road as fast as he could towards you. Naturally you stopped him and immediately proceeded to question him. He told that he was one of three clerics charged with maintaining the mountain shrine and that both of his brother priests had been killed by a dark evil. They had sensed its coming and sent for aid, early this morning they feared to wait any longer and attempted to subdue the evil by themselves. He alone survived and escaped but fears returning to his longtime home. His head suddenly whips around looking back up the mountain path and then, screaming, runs as fast as he can down the mountain side as you watch he trips and falls, rolling and bouncing down the mountainside. You continue watching him until he is no longer discernible then continue your trek up the mountain path. [/B]
You come to a plateau. Looking around you can see for miles into the distance in all directoins. There is only one structure on this plateau, the shrine to St. Cuthbert. Over the door hangs a symbol of a mace with a fist-head. Carved of stone, this shrine is easily older than your home temple, the great wooden door stands open and nothing else appears to be out of the ordinary
What do you do?

Interesting! I was going to run a cleric's challenge and had a number of takers after the warrior's challenge, I've been so busy of late that my replies are infrequent and short at best so it's moving slowly and I'm sorry for that but it's really out of my control as it's my job that's getting in the way.

I've been curious to test my personal opinion that the cleric is by far the most powerful class and I'm very curious to see how this turns out! Particularly with another DM!

I think for all others interested in running additional challenges we should keep the "challenge" threads to a handful in this forum so as to not clutter it and provoke the ire the moderators.

I will cast some buffs, all last for 9 hours:
Bull's Strength (1d4+1str)
Magic Vestement (+3 to AC)
Greater Magic Weapon (+3 enhancement to Falchion)
Endure Elements (Cold)- actually lasts for 24 hours

OOC: Question, how long do the potions last when I drink them?
Depending on how long the effects will last I may or may not drink:
Haste
Blur

I will then take a few steps back away from the door and call out, "Who dares to desecrate this most holy site? Come out fiend, so that you may recieve your punishment!"

Your brave words echo down the mountainside but the only answer is a howling gust of wind. The wooden door is blown still further open, slamming against the wall with and then swinging back from the rebound. There is no answering call, no hint or whisper of movement from what you can see.

(Your bull's strength came out as a result of 3+1 so four)
These spells combined make your AC 26 and your Falchion recieve two attacks per round at 15 and 10 total.

In any event what do you do now?

IF it helps i am picturing you standing about 20 feet away from the front door, out on the plateau before heading in, if this is incorrect please tell me now.
Shrine is perfectly square and stands 40 feet on a side, two stories tall (about 20 feet plus another 10 for the slanted slate roof)
Derlwyn

07-13-04, 04:59 PM
I draw my falchion, and carefully walk towards the entrance of the temple, eyes watching for anything moving. I enter the temple, eyes still searching, and I ready an action to strike with my falchion (full-attack) at anything that moves towards me in a threatening manner. As I enter the temple:

"Have it your way foul beast. You will not escape the fury of Ver-Shak, blessed by Him, St. Cuthbert!"

Thanks for the map, I think it will help soon! :D
Sashiel

07-13-04, 05:06 PM
Your trusted falchion held in front of you, you advance. Inside the temple you look around for any sign of an enemy. Oddly enough, you can see noone.
You hear a voice and realize it is within your own head. "Another morsel, oh so pleasing to the taste has come for me." Followed by a high-pitched cackle. Looking around you can see only the entrance room to this shrine. This room is a square 20 feet by 20 feet with a fire burning invitingly along the far wall. Two doors lead into this room, both open. The one on your left seems to lead into some sort of kitchen area, the other into a hallway.
Again the same voice seems to echo in your head, "Come and find me little one I haven't eaten orc-flesh in a longish time." You then realize that it is speaking to you in the language of the orcs and not common! What do you do?
Derlwyn

07-13-04, 05:15 PM
I cast detect magic in an attempt to gain a sense of where this thing might be.

"Foul b*tch! I do not come to play games. Show your wretched hide so that I may put you out of your misery!"
Sashiel

07-13-04, 05:26 PM
You send out magical sensors in a quarter circle directly ahead of you. At first you feel nothing but after a few more seconds you sense magic, Sending out a few more sensors you test its strength and it regesters as faint aura of magic and a few more seconds indicate that it seems to be ahead of you but underneath as well. Secondly you realize that this aura is being received in a wide area.

"That is a nice trick, afternoon snack, but you will have to do better."

Hmmm,
I kick my own ass for not putting etheral jaunt as one of my prepared spells. I guess in any other situation I would leave, rest, pray, and prepare etheral jaunt in place of Summon Monster V.
Frustrated by these silly games, Ver-Shak roars! Holding his flachion infront of himself he heads towards the door that leads to the hallway. Still keeping a keen eye, waiting for any agressive movement towards him (readying to full attack).

"I promise you this you wretched beast! The only snack you will have in your belly, is the blade of my sword!"

Chaotica, your build looks good.....probably better than mine!:D

Also, I do have to head to work. So I will be able to post my next reply later tonight. I may be able to get in another one in about 30mins or so. Oooohhhh I'm getting excited!
Chaotica Maxima

07-13-04, 05:43 PM
My build is fairly simple to be honest. Its like this: If it moves, I bash it. If I cant hit it normally, I buff up and hit it again!!
And with magic Vestiment I can get an AC of 30. Yay! Nopt bad for something I built from scratch in about haf an hour :D.
And your build is good too. Different form mine, but by no means bad. I loved the Deity/Race/Domain choice coincidence though ;)
Derlwyn

07-13-04, 06:09 PM
It is a cool coincidence!
Your strategy was the same as mine!
Bash or Buff and Bash!
And I decided to take a page out of the socerer/wizard strategy, fly and kill from afar!
I was going to go for the shield, but I thought I'd have a better chance of killing something if I opted for the Falchion rather than the mace/shield combo.
Well, I think the downfall of this encounter though will be my inability to go etheral! AH well! C'est la vie!

07-13-04, 06:20 PM
In any event you step into a 5 foot wide hallway. On your right is a set of stairs leading into the upper stories. I will assume you head the other direction.
Heading down the hallway you notice that the floor is slanting slowly downward. It is widely known that this shrine holds a great artifact of St.Cuthbert. You glance cautiously around the corner after about 20 feet and, seeing nothing, continue on. You can now make out the forms of unlit torches on the walls and at the end of the hall there is a doorway leading back underneath the shrine. From where you are (halfway down said hallway) you can see that the great stone door is standing open, though from here you cannot see into the room.

At this point all sight is with your darkvision, and, and you still have out your falchion in front of you.
Sashiel

07-13-04, 06:27 PM
Chaotica Maxima, yeah i noticed the similarities. Your build looks like a bigger damage machine too me a minute to figure out how you did it on 28 points (the +2 to dex wasnt really explained) but i can see its uses. I also like that you didnt sacrifice intelligence (my first cleric had 25 point but and it was my FIRST character so it was. . . lets just say 8, 10. 9. 15, 15, 15)
Chaotica Maxima

07-13-04, 06:35 PM
Oh, heh, I see my error now. I put the Enhancement bonus oin Str in the post, when it shouldve been Dex. So my base Str will be 18, instead of 20, and Dex will become 12 instead of 10. My bad n.n;

And considering its past midnight in my timezone, I'm calling it a night. I'll check back here in the morning. Byo to all!
Sashiel

07-13-04, 06:58 PM
actually based off of what you posted, dex would remain at 10.
16=10 points +2 (race) =18
8=0 points +2 (gloves of dexterity)= 10
14=6 points no bonuses or penalties
14=6 points -2 (race) =12
14=6 points+2 (level-ups)=16
6-natural loss

that is 28 points right there. Your AC should be 26
I see no other problems as yet,
Derlwyn

07-14-04, 12:52 AM
Hmmm,

I mutter aloud, "Come out, come out wherever you are...you (insert insulting orcish swear)!" as I head towards the open doorway.
Keeping a keen eye on the lookout for anything that might attack at me, (ready an action to full attack and activating my power attack for 5), I step into the room with my falchion leading the way in first. I am also going to look to the right as I enter the room.
Sashiel

07-14-04, 01:02 AM
As you step into the doorway a thick substance is immediately launched towards you. Immediately you attempt to dodge it by stepping inside the door and to the right, you barely make it. Peering into the darkness you can see what looks like a giant spider sitting 20 feet away from the open door. This thing is huge easily 15 feet across and back. You can see the remains of other webs adorning the walls and floor along the sides of this room.
Incidentally the room is a 40 foot square same as the shirne above
It is now your move, what do you do?

Am I within the spider's reach?

Sorry, I felt that to effectively dodge the web that is now filling the end of the hall you came out of i would have to move the character, after all, a web filling your space would not really be a reflex save to avoid. But that is my houserule.
At the moment you are against the wall, the door that you came through would be in the square to your left but along the same wall, yes there is a spider 20 feet in front of you, yes you are in a 40 foot square room. As for its reach, you can't tell.
(Just out of curiosity i would love to know what you thought it was when this is over)
(Side note, when this is over i can IMMEDIATELY start the second challenge)

Just to clarify, no movement is required when making a Reflex Save. It is just finding a 'safe' spot within the area of effect.

I believe that is generally true for say a fireball etc. I (generally) houserule that you dive out of the way, and dont consider it game breaking. If Derlwyn likes he can simply state that he would rather be standing in the doorway having ducked under the web and i will not complain. I dont think this alters playability or tactical situation all that much. Again, like i said if he wishes to be in doorway, that is fine with me. I also ignored the part about him looking right because i figured he would have to react to the web blast first, however if he wishes to look directly to the right i will describe it to him. Though i figured that would be negated by the obviously hostile presence directly in front of him.
(I apologize if my posts sound either arrogant or belittling, that is not my intent. I actually talk like this and there is no malice intended.)
Harliquinn

07-14-04, 12:36 PM
Not at all Sashiel. I think what you've done is a reasonable way to do this, I was just mainly pointing out that the RAW are that you do not need to 'move' when making a save. Therefore, if the web was cast at the PC while in the hall, he could choose to remain there as well.

Sashiel,
I totally didn't mind you moving me out of the way! I think that its the job of the DM to relate the players saves into real-life. Even in the case of the fireball, IMO its not like you find an inch of space that it doesn't pass through, you move out of the way. So its totally fine! Heck, its what I would've done even if you were to ask me! Okay, back to the action:

"Yum, I love the taste of spider legs!" I utter to the spider while I cast Summon Monster V. I choose to summon a Hound Archon and I choose to cast on the defensive. I will have the Hound Archon appear 5ft to the left of the spider. I also choose to recieve my +1 dodge bonus to AC from attacks from the spider. I think that makes my effective AC 27 now. I believe the check will be 20, and my concentration score is 17 to cast on the defensive....so please roll me at least a 3!

Are Psionics technically core? For the love of St. Cuthbert, please no (insert orcish swear) psionics!
By immediately start the second challenge do you mean no time to rest? Or do you mean that after I dispatch this spider :D we will go straight into the second challenge?
Sashiel

07-14-04, 03:10 PM
no i mean after you dispatch the spider we could go straight to challenge number two. . or could have i didnt get the complete stats down for the challenge yet but i am halfway there

in any event
Watching carefully to make sure the oversized spider cannot reach you, you pull out your holy symbol and pray for a few seconds. Almost before you are done speaking a great hound flashes into existence next to the oversized spider.
Greatsword in hand, the Hound asks, "What is your request, favored of St Cuthbert?"

yes, mind-flayers are core Monster Manual, no i will not use the over-powered things
Derlwyn

07-14-04, 03:31 PM
"Make this foul beast pay my friend! Let us destroy this fiend and remove its presence from this most holy place!"

I will have the Archon full-attack with its greatsword and bite.

I couldn't find the 3.0 Archon, but does the Aura of Menace work like the 3.5 edition? It states that when the Archon fights or gets angry the 20ft Aura is produced.
So if it is the same, its aura will be produced forcing the spider to make a will save DC 16. (Again, I'm going off 3.5 so hope that the Archon hasn't changed much! :D)

While the Archon attacks I will drink one potion of haste, then one of blur. I believe I will be out of actions after drinking those potions.

How high is this room? 40ft or does it go up for a bit?
Sashiel

07-14-04, 03:45 PM
I will answer the latter issues first. Summon Monster 5 takes a full round to cast making it Hound Archon, Spider, and then you before you can drink the potions. Yes it is the same aura of menace.
"Die you spawn of the abyss. You great find of the forces of light!" shouts the archon as he swings his greatsword down onto the offending demon. (His second swing connects solidly doing average damage 9)
You hear the menacing voice in your head again, "weakling must summon a weaker warrior to face me, ha ha." It bits into the arm of the Archon (16 damage) and then rakes it with both claws (9 each). The archon staggers and dies under the ripping attacks. As he dies you hear him call out to the good St. Cuthbert.
Do you still want to quaff the potions?
Sashiel

07-14-04, 03:47 PM
I should note that although this should only take him to -1 hit points, the archon is actually completely dead. (failed fort save).
Derlwyn

07-14-04, 03:52 PM
Yes, I will still drink the potions
Hmmm, thought good ol' hound boy would stand up for a little longer. Ah well!

I'm really going to need that +4 haste AC!
Sashiel

07-14-04, 04:02 PM
You quickly quaff the potions, suddently everything seems to slow down for you. Your form becomes indistinct and wavery.
Regardless the Oversized arachnid that you are quickly beginning to realize is NOT a natural spider by any means comes at you, its mandibles clicking open and shut. Suddenly it lunges, biting at you. Its mandibles connect injecting poison into your blood (16 hp + 3 con damage)
what do you do?
Derlwyn

07-14-04, 04:12 PM
I full-attack with my falchion, power attacking for 5
Then using the extra partial action I do a regular attack, again power attacking for 5.

"You pitiful creature! It will be an honour to put you out of your misery!"
Harliquinn

07-14-04, 04:18 PM
Don't want to interrupt, but I was wondering where the rolls were being done and if results could be posted?
Sashiel

07-14-04, 04:18 PM
Three times you swing your trusted falchion at the creature three times your falchion glances harmlessly off of its thick carapace."
Again the voice echoes in your head, "Nice try, sweetly tasting orc, NOW DIE."
Again the beast bites you (16 damage, no poison this time), two of its legs come around and try to tear at you but fail to penetrate your armor.
Sashiel

07-14-04, 04:22 PM
I have been rolling for d 20's damage is average damage, sadly i will not be able to post a record of rolls for this one (although in the future i certainly will remember to write them down) this is the downside to me being unable to download a random number generator (the computer i use is not mine though it is freely available for my use) I apologise for that, the second one i promise i will keep a record of all randomly rolled numbers and post them after the scenario ends.

( I still would love to know what Derlwyn thought this was)
Derlwyn

07-14-04, 04:22 PM
Sashiel is doing the rolls, and I believe we are averaging the damage.
Though I thought that the average of rolls were always half+.5
Maybe posting the rolls would be cool Sashiel. I don't really care either way, but it would be interesting to know.
Derlwyn

07-14-04, 04:29 PM
crud!
Well then, I think I can afford another go with my falchion!
Same attacks, full-attack, then regular attack. This time, no power attacking :D.

Note: Are you taking into account the +3 enhancement to my falchion from GMW. It also adds another +3 to attacks and damage.
Derlwyn

07-14-04, 04:37 PM
Sorry, it would be a +3 enhancement total (no stacking) so a +3 enhancement to attack total, and no bonus to damage.
I have no idea what I was thinking!
Sashiel

07-14-04, 05:06 PM
yes actually i am at 9th you get two attacks +6, +1, +1 because of the enhancement makes it +7, +2, add a +5 for your current strenght making it +12, +7 and then your 3 for GMW makes it +15, +10

You swing and are almost thrown off balance (natural 1) before you regain your stability and attack. Energized by frustration at your failure your next two swings connect solidly with the creature.
(totals of 25 and 25 respectively) (13 damage each, 2,5x2=5+1.5x5{strength} round down = 5+7=12 +1 enhancemente, penetrating deep into its carapace.
i believe that between attacks and con damage you are at 5 hitpoints, lets see two hits at 16=32, and two hit points lost per level because of the poison.
continuing:
Again the creature attacks you, as it lunges to bite again, it lurches from your onslaught missing you entirely. Its claws come around again, raking at your armor, the first bounces off but the second bites into your flesh (9 hp) and ripping away your armor. Your darkvision winks out as you escape into merciful unconsciousness.
Sashiel

07-14-04, 05:09 PM
Sorry about the delay on that one, my internet locked up. I think the next one might take you out even easier (though i promise, still CR 9. . .though it might be 8. . . ) and you are right, i didnt catch that eiether, that would drop the number of times you hit to once. Ah well
Seriously, what did you think it would be?
Derlwyn

07-14-04, 05:43 PM
:banghead:
Wow am I stupid!!
I totally forgot about the continual HP loss from the posion!
Crikey! The whole time I was like, oh Con damage, whatever!

Didn't I threaten a critical on the first hit I actually scored on the spider?

Well chalk that one up to serious failure on the part of the player. After that I seriously don't think I even deserve another chance!

But I'm game if you wish to humiliate me again!:D

Oh, and was this just a spider that you amped up, or was it an a different creature?
At first I thought it was a night hag, hence my babbling about ethrealness
Do you mind if I change some of my spells around? Its okay if you want to keep it as is, but if you'll let me I would like to change a couple.
Sashiel

07-14-04, 07:09 PM
Actually, it was no spider. The archon was the best clue i could give you. It was a Bebilith. (CR 9 Demon. . . with a perpetual magic circle against law). As for spell lists, i assumed you would change things around for the second go at it. That is why I decided on two rounds per entry. Like i said, i already have the next challenge (though i will ahve to go get it if you respond rather quickly) and i am not sure if it is cr 8 or 9, in any event we shall see
Sashiel

07-14-04, 07:11 PM
Right, you did critical hit with that one. . . it wouldnt have mattered but i apologise for not doubling the damage. My bad
Hayt

07-14-04, 07:39 PM
can i have a go at this cleric challenge after your through with Chaotica Maxima's trials?
Sashiel

07-14-04, 07:44 PM
Yes Hayt, in fact you can post your build whenever you want. Like I said before. 28 point buy, standard 36,000 gp gear, Level 9, post Deity, Domains, Alignment (any descriptions you care to add sound good to). I promise no dragons, no psionics CR 9. I will still be rolling the d20's (posting them afterwards) and using averages for all other numbers (damages, hitpoints etc)
Zelphi

07-15-04, 07:55 AM
Hey, what was the word on source books - because it gives an unfair advantage to anyone who has them...

http://www.opengamingfoundation.org/srd.html

I'd make one, but I'd have to make notes as I don't have all the books one.
Derlwyn

07-15-04, 10:06 AM
Thanks Zelphi!

Yes, that was the site I've been getting information from so far. However, I have been going by the 3.5 MM because that site only has monsters listed alphabetically, and not by CR. So I suppose I could've downloaded them all and searched for all the potential CR 9's, but alas I did not.

I looked up that thing in the 3.5, looks like they've made it a CR 10! I probably would've approached it differently, if I knew what it was. But hindsight is always 20/20 eh! I also would've done better had I payed attention to the poison! I am definitely uneducated in how poison works. Can anyone explain to me how by taking con damage, your hp is reduced? Just so I don't make the same mistake again :D!

Anywho, I'll have my spell changes up soon so Sashiel can once again humiliate me!
Szatany

07-15-04, 10:11 AM
Can anyone explain to me how by taking con damage, your hp is reduced? Just so I don't make the same mistake again ! Very simple, for each 2 points of Constitution lost, you loose 1 hit point per level. However, no matter how low your Con is, you cannot have less than 1 hit point/level.
Chaotica Maxima

07-15-04, 10:14 AM
Okay, on the bit of the con damage HP loss:
Its basically the reverse of what happens to your HP because of a high Con score. High Con=Bonus HP. Low Con (Negative modifier)=HP penalty.
For example, Grorg our lvl 1 Barbarian has a con score of 14.
This gives him 12+2 hp.
Then, Grorg gets struck by a poison that does Con damage, and loses 6 points of Con. His mod drops from +2 to -1, and as such he loses 3 hitpoints per HD, in this case 3.
If he were second level, he would have lost 6 hitpoints (3 hitpoints per HD), and so on and so forth as he gains levels.

Hope that cleared up something. If not, then boo to me! :P
Harliquinn

07-15-04, 10:18 AM
Posting the rolls would be cool (Even if you do them manually) that way in case there would be an error in computation or in application it could be caught.
Zelphi

07-15-04, 10:18 AM
I have no idea where the poison details are in either SRD...

But I know what con poison does.

Basically all poisons have a first and second state of damage (con in this case).

As soon as you get inflicted - it's a save or take some amount of con damage.

Then it's a second save or take another set of damage.

So basically what happens is something like this.

Lets say you have a con of 10 and 60 HP (from a 10d10)
You take 2 con damage (a small amount) and now have a con score of 8 (-1)

So your HP drop by 10 HP (-1 for each level) and you have 50hp.

If the secondary effect of the con poison drops you another 4...

then you get reduced to con 4 (-3) and you lose a further 20 HPs and have 30hps remaining.

If you had taken 30 damage when you were at 50hp you'd be at 20, and the drop in con would've killed you.

It's like a bonus to con score (like with rage) but in reverse.
Sashiel

07-15-04, 11:29 AM
I noticed someone asked about sourcebooks. I am allowing only 3.0 core rule books (PHB, DMG) and that is it. I personally dont have any other books for 3.0 and i tell my players that if they want to use them, they have to buy me a copy. If on the other hand a player creates a feat or skill or prestige class that i can 1. easily integrate into a campaign and 2. think is balanced then i generally allow it. I also occasionlly craft feats/skills/prcs for no real reason and allow them as well.

So 3.0 Core only. no splatbooks, no Complete Divine, no Tome and Blood, no Dragon Articles, online item ideas/feats no alternate builds, simply straight up 3.0 core

As for rolls, i will in any further challenges post them with explanations (ie. what they were used for) partly because i would secretly roll knowledge arcana checks to see if a character would know something, listen checks for how much they hear, bluff (if anyone ever uses it) etc

If there are any further questions feel free to post them.
And Derlwyn I am looking forward to the new spell selection, lets see what you do.
Derlwyn

07-15-04, 12:47 PM
Thanks for the help with poison everybody!
(Is it that glaringly obvious I'm a newbie?)

Anywho, here are my updated spells:
0-6: Light x3, Mending, Guidance, Detect Magic
1-5+1: Command x2, Divine Favor, Obscuring Mist, Doom; Domain: Endure Elements (Cold)
2-5+1: Resist Elements (Fire), Spiritual Weapon(Heavy mace) x2, Silence, Hold Person; Domain: Bull’s Strength
3-4+1: Searing Light x2, Dispel Magic, Bestow Curse; Domain: Magic Vestment
4-3+1: Divine Power, Neutralize Poison, Greater Magic Weapon; Domain: Inflict Critical Wounds
5-1+1: Flame Strike; Domain: Circle of Doom

I await the next challenge!

Another quick question, when hasted I can use a full-round action, then another partial action. If two spells only have a casting time of 1 action, can both of those spells be cast in 1 turn?
Chaotica Maxima

07-15-04, 01:44 PM
Yes, yes you can.
From 3.0 to 3.5, they whacked Haste with the Nerf Stick/Bat/Whtever, but in 3.0, you can have 3 spells a round. Whoo!! (1 quickened, 1 regular, and 1 from the action Haste gives you.).
Derlwyn

07-15-04, 01:54 PM
Ya, that is pretty wicked. Though not really worthwhile to quicken a 1st level spell in a 5th level slot for us eh!
Chaotica Maxima

07-15-04, 02:02 PM
WE could quicken.... LIGHT! :P
Light is so awesome, we could easily exped a 4th level slot to cast it as a free action. LIGHT!!!!!!!! :P
Or even awesomer.... Quickened..... VIRTUE! Yay for the useless 1 temporary hp. But we MUST have uit quickened :P.
Sashiel

07-15-04, 02:13 PM
Sure, give me a minute to get my PHB and number two is a go (though you might be able to slay this one a bit easier. . . CR 9 true. . . but a little underpowered in my opinion.
I also apologise if my responses are needlessly slow (for me) I am starting a halfling campaign tonight and am giving each player a tailored sheet of information about their history over the last two days or so. This is my initial plot hook, kinda lame and it starts in a tavern (though not quite the cliche of meeting over ale)
but it was the only way i could think of to get my 3 experienced role-players hooked up with the 3 noobs without completely destroying party compatability later.
Derlwyn

07-15-04, 02:27 PM
No worries about your responses Sashiel!

I work quite a bit so there are times when I can respond right away, and times when I'm not even here for hours.

Thank you for thinking I could possibly stand a bit a of a chance against your next challenge! I honestly don't think I can win....except with some really good rolls!

Something I want to ask you too Sashiel, do you have a d10 that you can roll percentages with?

Oh, and beware my quickened Comprehend Languages!!:smirk:
Sashiel

07-15-04, 02:35 PM
For three days have you been wandering these accursed sewers. They were only kobolds it is true, but there were so many of them. It is little wonder that they have been raiding the city of Trivane overhead, with these numbers they would have been hard pressed to sustain themselves for very long.
Yesterday you found that map of the sewers, but with a few additions. It seems someone has been building tunnels that lead into the sewers that extend under the river. Deciding to check it out you followed the map into the tunnels leading off under the river.
As you walk you notice that the walls have become straight, worked stone and have noticed faded tapestries along the walls, although you do not recognize the pattern or even any of the markings. You easily cleared away the last of the guards before coming to this door. You can tell that it is an intricately designed wooden door. On further inspection you realize that it is gilded with gold that has long since lost its luster.
The air is thick an heavy with the untouched dust of centuries which you ahve stirred up and a cobwebs adorn the upper walls and ceiling of this five foot wide hallway.
What do you do?

(Yes, i have all of my dice with me though i have so far not need to roll percentages.)

Shouldn't the potion of Blur grant a 20% miss chance when others are attacking me?

Well, before I go any further...I shall buff up. (Starts pumping iron... :D). I cast Bull's Strength, Magic Vestement, Greater Magic Weapon, and Endure Elements (cold).

Is the door the only possible way to go, other than the way I came? If so, I will knock on the door :smirk:

Cobwebs?? :mymy: No more spider like creatures!!

Quickened..... Death Watch! Yay!
And ofcourse. I give props for funny/weird/good ideas :D
Derlwyn

Quickened..... Death Watch! Yay!
:OMG! :heehee

Though I suppose Quickened Detect Undead could be just as freakin useless!
Sashiel

07-15-04, 03:25 PM
Yeah, it did, i rule it as a 1-4 on a d20.

No, the map clearly indicates that this is the entrance to the next room (although it give no clear indication of its dimensions or uses. . . the map seems to end at this door.)

Your fist strikes the door twice and then a third time. The sound echoes up the hallway but there is no response.
Chaotica Maxima

07-15-04, 03:27 PM
Well, quickened Detect Undead can be usefull if your talking to something and want to find out if theyre undead without giving yourself away. Quickened Deathwatch just takes the cake for uselessness :P
Sashiel

07-15-04, 03:30 PM
why not quickened mending i mean seriously? What is this spell even used for?
Derlwyn

07-15-04, 03:34 PM
How much did my str increase from bull's str?

Alright, is there a handle on the door? I drink my first potion of hatse, then my first potion of blur. I draw my falchion. If there is a handle I will try to open the door by using the handle. If it is locked, no handle, etc., I will SMASH the door with my falchion :D.

Yes, Quickened Deathwatch does utterly take the cake!
Derlwyn

07-15-04, 03:35 PM

Maybe you have this quilt, that you must absolutely fix right away....wouldn't want to be stuck without mending!
Chaotica Maxima

07-15-04, 03:36 PM
Mending.... Now why didnt I think of that. I have to admit you've picked the most useless spell ever. Quickened even :P

EDIT: Typo's are not your friends..... n.n;
Sashiel

07-15-04, 04:00 PM
Yes there is a handle, but it does not open easily. After a couple of seconds you manage to wrench it open. The door swings towards you and hits the wall with a deafening crash.

You recieved 4, average is 2.5+1 so 3.5 and i decided to be nice and round up. Please do not post anything in response just yet. I am not entirely finished with the description, and you may want to hear the rest of it.

Corinth_WI you have few mistakes:

Tower darkwood shield costs 30 + 150 + 45x10 = 630 gp, so 1/3 from craft skill would make it 210 total. This puts you dangerously close to threshold, beware :)

Sashiel

07-16-04, 09:45 AM
Templates? like half-celestial? no.

sorry about the description, i started my new campaign last night and so i am going to be seriously slowed (especially since we are gaming again tomorrow) so i will post the description before midafternoon.

07-16-04, 09:48 AM
i was thinking half-dragon

if not ill have my stats up soon. btw wat is the $$ limit?
Sashiel

07-16-04, 10:18 AM
For gp limit, scroll upwards it should be listed at least twice
Chaotica Maxima

07-16-04, 10:32 AM
Wow, gotta love the irony......
Sashiel, you are busy and wont post much, and all of a sudden 3 new takers appear. Irony, aint she a :censored:
In the end, we might go nuts, and with the 5 of us together take up a CR 11 or whatever :P. Cleric-Mania :P
Derlwyn

07-16-04, 11:31 AM
WOW! Hey Chaotica, that's a wicked Idea!

What do you think Sashiel? Have the four (or are there five?) of us take on 4 CR 9 monsters, or 1 CR 13 monster!

I think Clerics shine more when in the company of others, rather than by themselves anyways.

And take as much time as you need! I'm not going anywhere!
Chaotica Maxima

07-16-04, 11:44 AM
Hmm.... that would be interesting. We would probably be the up-front melee guys, so we'd get to buff n bash, and we can actually survive since now we have people to heal us! Yay! :D
All Cleric party is cool :D
Derlwyn

07-16-04, 11:50 AM
All Cleric party would be cool!
But not for Sashiel, because we would trounce anything he could throw at us!
Chaotica Maxima

07-16-04, 11:54 AM
Pretty much. With 5 Clerics, we can kill pretty much anything :P.
And we can get half to heal/spelfling, and half to do melee. I'm going melee myself then ofcourse. 18 Str means Melee is a necessity n.n;
Sashiel

07-16-04, 01:41 PM
That is of course until the five of you meet a party of raging halfling barbarians. . . or awakened dire badger bards that happen to know only one song. . . with awakened mushrooms and snakes as cohorts. . . . will save versus permanent insanity anyone :D

Just kidding.

The room is long, almost double the width (50 feet). At your end you can make out 4 rows of columns but the middle two rows seem to end halfway into the room. There is also one large column at the far end, sitting in front of that column is a small creature who appears to be hunched over, though he could be kneeling. The roof arches far above you, rising from the columns in graceful arcs, now decorated with the weavings of generations of spiders, there dont appear to be any webs on your level however, for which you thank your patron.
What do you do?
Derlwyn

07-16-04, 01:55 PM
So how far apart are each of columns? Not the rows of columns, each one. And how many columns are there?
Can I make out any other discernable details about the figure? Height(an estimation)? Facial features? Build?

I call out to the figure, "You there. In the name of the almighty St. Cuthbert, who are you? And what is this place?"
Sashiel

07-16-04, 03:44 PM
They are about 5 feet apart in both directions with a 2 and 1/2 foot radius. . . you only see the first 3 of the middle two rows though so you think that the middle two rows stop halfway into the room
Derlwyn

07-16-04, 03:47 PM
Ah, okay.
Does the figure respond at all to my comment? What about my questons about his appearance?

I will shoot you. In the face. With a hammer, if you do that. The song is annoying enough without having to reenact in D&D. :D
www.badgerbadgerbadger.com is eeeeeeevil
Though that reminds me of a strange stunt I once pulled.
I made a summoned horse (Mount spell), bark like a poodle. Then I made it bark/Neigh, and everyone had to make a Will save DC 10 or become confused. It made us laugh. The big Ogre running around and tripping over a rock was hilarious :D

my friend is playing a were-direbadger fighter right now (he made the level progression work out based on the other were-creature level progressions). He missed the last half hour or so of a session, and i was suppose to play him. i found a place under his attacks that had rooms for comments or somethingerother on his character sheet, so i wrote in "badger badger badger mushroom mushroom snake ooooh its a snake!"...... about halfway through the next session in the middle of a combat he went "WAAAH?!"

just enjoying all the challenge threads

Sashiel

07-17-04, 05:24 AM
You may play as a standard race. You may play as a character with only cleric levels
Chaotica Maxima

07-17-04, 06:36 AM
Yeah. Sashiel is being evil. She doesnt allow for much creativity :P
(Just kidding ofcourse ;))

Derlwyn

07-18-04, 02:57 PM
Hey Sashiel,

I know you are busy with your campaign and such, but are you waiting for my actions? Because I'm still waiting to know how the figure responded after I called out to it. I'm also waiting to know if there are any other sorts of distiguishing features about this thing.

Anywho, waiting patiently! :D
Chaotica Maxima

07-18-04, 06:40 PM
Heheh, yeah, I'd sort of been wondering when someone would reply again. And I wont be posting that much either. I just started up a new group, and I'm DMIng. with the grand number of two players. And I might just toss my cleric in :D. At a lowerr lvl ofcourse:angel:
Sashiel

07-18-04, 07:10 PM
First off Chaotica, I am male. "She" is an incorrect pronoun. I just happen to like the soft sounds that form my username. I have played characters with the names Caiathane and Aquell, also both male. . . i just happen to like the type of sound.

The creature responds, "Order is my name and this place is my own. What business is it of yours, worshipper of St. Cuthbert?"
From where you are, you can tell that it seems entirely too small to be a human, its face seems elongated and what little you can see of his skin indicates that it is darker than the fair elves or humans in these lands. Other than that, you are too far away to tell much.
Derlwyn

07-18-04, 07:28 PM
"I come here for my own purpose. How did you come to this place? I warn you, I have no love of evil nor any love for those who seek to bring it upon others. What are your intentions mysterious one?"

I don't move any closer. I do ready an action to cast Searing Light at the thing if it moves towards me in a threatening manner.
Sashiel

07-18-04, 08:08 PM
"You have no love of evil and yet ruthlessly slaughter my friends. My kobolds who were merely aiding me in my quest to bring a perfect order to your city."
Derlwyn

07-18-04, 09:06 PM
"So you freely admit you were allied with those evil creatures. I took the liberty of ridding the world of those creatures because it was the will of St. Cuthbert. They were your friends, and I am sorry for your loss. But if you choose to leave now and never return you will ecape judgement from St. Cuthbert today. If you choose to stay, you will not escape the wrath of St. Cuthbert. So choose now."

Again, no movement, but I ready an action to cast Searing Light if he makes an agressive act or motion towards me.
Chaotica Maxima

07-18-04, 09:12 PM
Err, sorry about that Sashiel :embarrass:, though I'm sure you can understand that someone might be confused by that. I'll be good from now on ;)
Derlwyn

07-19-04, 04:44 PM
And I also choose to recieve my +1 dodge bonus from the figure
Zelphi

07-20-04, 07:35 AM
This topic keeps disapearing.

+1 dodge against the statue.... just sounds odd.
Derlwyn

07-20-04, 01:15 PM
+1 dodge against the statue
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this Zelphi. I'm talking about the figure, whom OOC I believe is a drow. The one that is crouching infront of a large pillar. I don't recall a statue.

07-20-04, 01:21 PM
is it ok if my cleric doesnt have a deity?
Soulman1990

07-20-04, 01:37 PM
I think Clerics need Deitys, there people of the cloth. That's how they draw there powers from a deity. Correct me if I am wrong.
Derlwyn

07-20-04, 01:54 PM
I don't know what the 3.0 PHB says, but in the 3.5 it says that Clerics need not have a particular deity. They can choose any 2 domains as long as it fits their alignment. If they need to contact a god, then they contact one of their alignment. But they don't have to specifically worhip any deity.
Chaotica Maxima

07-20-04, 04:25 PM
3.0 PHB tells me the same, though I as a DM would be reluctant to let that fly. But for this challenge, who really gives a ****?
Godless cleric you get to be, as long as Sashiel doesnt have a problem with it.
leviathien899

07-21-04, 11:12 PM
:) :bump: :)
Zelphi

07-22-04, 06:58 AM
Hmm... thought it was a statue..

Which would make "I prepare to dodge the statue" a bit odd.
Sashiel

07-22-04, 12:25 PM
I did ask that everyone post a god so that i would have a way of setting up a moderate back story (as i try to do with the others). I am sorry i have not posted more often, i should be able to do much more today and tomorrow. (My new group moves insanely slowly so i am prepared fro the next 3 sessions, but we did meet 3 times in 4 days so. . . between that and a job hunt. . . my apologies. . . the "statue" will be moving shortly.)
Soulman1990

07-22-04, 06:17 PM
Sorry For my mistake, is it there domains that they draw there dvine poweres from?
Zelphi

07-23-04, 06:10 AM
Are you using an SRD?

You generally draw power from a deity (through faith or such) and they grant you powers from aditional domains.

I believe you're being asked for a deity. The deity limits what domains you can pick - which can balance out choices. It detracts somewhat from powergaming by taking away powerful combinations and granting more of a theme to your Cleric.

SO I was right the first time, I said Clerics Draw powers from there Deitys, so I figured you'd need one.

Here is the relevant portion of the SRD: Deity, Domains, and Domain Spells: A cleric’s deity influences his alignment, what magic he can perform, his values, and how others see him. A cleric chooses two domains from among those belonging to his deity. A cleric can select an alignment domain (Chaos, Evil, Good, or Law) only if his alignment matches that domain.
If a cleric is not devoted to a particular deity, he still selects two domains to represent his spiritual inclinations and abilities. The restriction on alignment domains still applies.
Each domain gives the cleric access to a domain spell at each spell level he can cast, from 1st on up, as well as a granted power. The cleric gets the granted powers of both the domains selected.
With access to two domain spells at a given spell level, a cleric prepares one or the other each day in his domain spell slot. If a domain spell is not on the cleric spell list, a cleric can prepare it only in his domain spell slot.

I was wondering if it was at all possible to use dieties from FR. I would still be going straight cleric and use core for feats and everything else. I am a FR player and want to make my dwarven cleric of Clangeddin Silverbeard. If you could find it in your heart I would be ever so grateful.
