| Taylon Moonshadow05-22-05, 03:06 AM | Underneath the descprition for cleric it only mentions a cleric not being able to cast spells of the opposite alignment spontaneously. For example, a cleric must choose to be able to cast cure light wounds or inflict light wounds. But with the way i read it that seems like that is only with spontaneous casting, it doesn't seem like the way it is written that it applies to alls spells cast. So, i guess my question is, can a good aligned cleric cast evil discritpor spells such as inflict or deathkneel, as long as they memorize them prior? |

| Taylon Moonshadow05-22-05, 03:25 AM | That isn't a very useful answer. The only ruling i can find in the PHB is under the cleric section, and as i said before, that is only under the spontaneous casting rules. Is it written somewhere else that a good cleric cannot cast spells that have evil discriptors? |

Is it written somewhere else that a good cleric cannot cast spells that have evil discriptors? Its no because you already stated it. A Good Cleric can't cast Evil Spells, and Vise Versa. A neutral cleric chooses either to cast as a Good Cleric, or an Evil Cleric. It's the same as his rebuke/turn undead ablity. |
| sooperspook05-22-05, 03:45 AM | they cannot cast spells with alignments in opposition to their deities (or thier) alignment. Such spells are determined by the alignment descriptor they have. Good/Evil/Law/Chaos. Cure and Inflict spells have no such descriptor. Thus evil clerics can memorize and cast cure spells while good clerics can memorize and cast inflict spells. Spontaneous casting is a special case and is tied to the positive/negative energy aspect of the cleric class. That is, its based on whether a cleric turns or rebukes undead. If a cleric (good or neutral) turns undead then he casts cure spells spontaneously. if he rebukes (evil or neutral) then he casts inflict spontaneously. hmm a bit long winded. oh well. the answer is , no. A cleric cannot memorize or cast aligned spells that are in opposition to their alignment. |
| Loophole Hider05-22-05, 08:04 AM | The way to get around taht is to be neutral... |
| AutumnRoo05-22-05, 11:52 AM | Taylon, I imagine you want the exact wording from the rulebook/SRD, so here goes: Check the section in the PH, page 33, directly following "Spontaneous Casting" entitled "Chaotic, Evil, Good, and Lawful Spells". Chaotic, Evil, Good, and Lawful Spells A cleric can’t cast spells of an alignment opposed to his own or his deity’s (if he has one). Spells associated with particular alignments are indicated by the chaos, evil, good, and law descriptors in their spell descriptions. |
