Greetings!

Turning Undead Clarification: 3.5 D&D rules

I) Table 8-9: Turning Undead (d20 + your Charisma modifier):
Turning Check Result Most Powerful Undead Affected (Max Hit Dice)
< 0 Cleric's Level - 4
1-3 Cleric's Level - 3
4-6 Cleric's Level - 2
7-9 Cleric's Level - 1
10-12 Cleric's Level
13-15 Cleric's Level + 1
16-18 Cleric's Level + 2
19-21 Cleric's Level + 3
22+ Cleric's Level + 4

II) Turning Damage:
2d6 + your cleric level + your Charisma Modifier

III) Extra Turning Feat (1x): You can turn creatures 4 more times per day than normal.

IV) Improved Turning Feat: You turn creatures as if you were one level higher than you are in class that grants you the ability.

V) A cleric with 5 or more ranks in Knowledge (religion) gets a +2 bonus on "turning checks" against undead.

VI) Destroying Undead: If "you have twice as many levels" (or more) as the undead have Hit Dice, you destroy any that you would normally turn.

Questions:

I'm a 3rd level Neutral Good Cleric, with 15 Charisma (+2 modifier)
I have Extra Turning (1x), Improved Turning and 5 ranks of Knowledge (religion)

My questions are this:

Q1)
Turning check Calculation:
Say I roll a 12 on the d20. Is my score a 12 + 2(cha) + 2(knowledge) = 16, which allows me to affect 3 + 2 + 1(Improved Turning) = 6 HD creatures??

Q2)
Turning Damage Calculation:
Say I roll 10 on 2d6. Is my damage roll then 10 + 3 + 1 (Improved Turning) + 2 (Knowledge) = 16?

Q3) Destroying.
As a 3rd level Cleric with Improved Turning, do I destroy up to 1 HD (since I am level 3), up to 2 HD (Improved Turning makes me a 4th level cleric) or up to 3HD creatures (due to my 6HD Max Damage roll in Q1)?

Thank you for any clarification. There's lots of undead out there and I really hate the Fast zombies!

Improved Turning treats you as 1 level higher for EVERY purpose related to turning, think about it that way, it is much simpler.

So: You are a level 4 undead turner.

Q1) Yes. 6 HD (4 (Level) + 2 (from table))

Q2) No, 14 HD total. 4 (level) + 10 (2d6)
The +2 from synergy applies to turning checks, not damage.

Q3) No, you destroy half your turning level, 4/2 = 2 HD or less (each)
No roll affects whether an undead creature is destroyed or turned.
If you succeed in turning, it becomes effective HD vs. effective turning level.

My bad, your second option for Q3) was correct.
Incidentally, you can't fail to destroy 2 HD zombies, unless you take Charisma damage/drain.

Q1)Correct, you would be at 6HD

Q2) No. It would only be 14, the Knowledge +2 is only to turning Checks not damage.

Q3) It would be half your level, not half the number of HD. So, your level 4, thanks to imp turning, and half of that is 2, so a human skeleton with 2 HD is vaporized. Poof!

Thank you both for your prompt responses. Gotta go, I hear some skeletons coming. :)

Since Turning Damage is 2d6 + cleric level + Cha modifier, In my Q2 example above, my damage would be 10(2d6) + 4(eff level) + 2(Cha) = 16. It is just that the Knowledge(Religion) bonus will NOT effect this roll.

Sound good?

Sound good?Hmm...correct.
All three of us missed that.
So you were right, but for the wrong reasons.
I and Krug were wrong, but for the right reasons.

Cha bonus = yes
Synergy (Know(Religion)) = no
