Hello. I am new to the board and in desperate need of help. I need to build a cleric who can tank and deal some good dmg. He will be a half-orc follower of St. Cuthbert. His stats are: str 18 dex 10 con 15 int 10 wis 18 cha 14 (I rolled really well). Will be using Player's Handbook (of course), any and all of the completes. I would like help, primarily with feat selection and maybe spells. Any material from other books may be used, but please list the full name of the book, as I am new and am not familiar with the abbreviations. Also, any good spells that may generally be looked over. also this will be in G.H. and nothing that is non GH will be allowed

Thank you! Bigbodp. -

For future reference, the Character Optimization Board (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=339) is probably the best forum for questions like these. Particularly if you follow the posting guidelines (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=626244) there, you'll get some amazing results.

In any case, the first question that any melee cleric needs to ask himself is this: to use Divine Metamagic or not to use Divine Metamagic? Divine Metamagic is a feat from Complete Divine that can be overpowered but delivers the most effective melee results. Basically, you take that feat, Extend Spell, and Persistent Spell (Complete Arcane) and use turning attempts to have personal buffs like divine favor, divine power, righteous might and recitation (Complete Divine) last all day. You do need to have a lot of turning attempts, however, meaning that you may have to burn feats on Extra Turning (sub-optimal) or spend money on Nightsticks from Libris Mortis (very optimal, to say the least).

Regardless of whether you use Divine Metamagic, make good use of your buff spells. Cast magic vestment on your weapon (and shield, if you use one) and cast greater magic weapon on your primary melee weapon. Once you hit level 7, cast divine power at the start of any major fight and go to town. Even at low levels, spells like shield of faith and bull's strength can significantly improve your melee prowess.

Since you have a decent Charisma, you may be interested in the Divine Might feat (Complete Warrior) to add to your melee damage or Divine Vigor (Complete Divine) to improve your mobility and grant temporary HP. The War domain can give you martial weapon proficiency and Weapon Focus in a martial weapon, so you can go with a longsword if you want to use a shield or worship an ideal or non-PHB deity and take the War domain to grab a greatsword.

I managed to make a damn good cleric tank, but you'll need the book of exhalted deeds. Look up the saint templat and apply it to the character. (Your DM may make you earn it). After 10 cleric levels, take the prereqs for fist of raziel prestige class, then take that. from there, get some damn good fullplate and a large warhammer and you should be good. I Don't have all the specifications with me, but I'll repost them later, or I can send them to you. And above all else, boost your STR, CHA, and WIS w/ this build, or it won't work.
