Alternate way to get + credits? [Archive] - Wizards Community

This is just an idea I'm throwing around, and I'd like some feedback and stuff.

Basically, I think that the only way to make neat, 'fantasy' characters in the arena is to become a pitlord and moderate a bunch of fights to get the + credits. I was thinking that one could 'buy' the credits using gold awarded from fights.

The first credit would be 1000 gp, and then the price would go up by 500 until the 10th credit, (4500gp). From there it would go up by 1000gp until the 20th (14500) and from there it would go up by 2000 for the next 10, then 3000...

Basically this idea means that you don't have to become a pitlord to get + credits. I think that this will not discourage getting involved in the arena, because only winning characters (mostly characters which people take the time to send strategies for, and take the time to manage the character) will be getting the gold with which to buy equipment as well as + credits. Of course, the system isn't blind either. If someone is just making characters to use the gold soley for + credits, then dropping it and making a new one, we'll know about it. We might install a rule saying you have to be 4th level or higher to purchase the credits...

This is just a rough idea and needs fine-tuning as well as more ideas. I just thought that an alternate way to get credits other then pitlording might be a good idea. I'm relatively new to the arena, so forgive me if this idea has been brought up and dismissed before.

I think this idea is pretty cool, and could add diversity in the Arena.

I was thinking maybe every 3 wins or so, you get a + credit. Gold isnt as valuable to some classes, ie Monk, as it is to other classes.

I've always thought there should be another way to earn credits other than Pitlording, but not as quickly

I am guessing that this gp would be taken from the character's wealth?

It is a really cool idea. It would be nice especially for people that have great ideas for creatures with LA +2.

Why has no one else thought of this? I like the idea, especially for someone like my drow. 2000 gp and nothing to buy. Kinda sucks, really. I really like this as I am saving for a nice ECL that is greater than 10. ouchie...

I feel the same way. I'd love to be able to buy credits. Though we may want to make it slightly more expensive that was originally proposed, I still really like the idea a lot.

well if youre not a pitlord.. and you are buying credits.. what else are you going to do besides drop the character to make your new one? unless you mean someone making a bunch of level 1 characters and spending the 1000gp on a credit. but yeah, the 4th level thing is good anyway.

The only difficulty I see with this system is that it is taking gold away from characters. Now, as this board was meant to be a location for testing the efficiency of character builds, having these builds lose money (necessary for important items) to an outside source (like creds) is likely to only hurt these builds, and encourage "mining" of new characters. I don't wish to squash creativity, but I believe linking resources to credits is a bad idea....

Indeed. The whole purpose of the credit system is to encourage people to put a little work into maintaining and improving the CoCo. The benefit of using credits to have exotic PC's is the reward for the extra effort.

There will be other ways to gain credits instead of running fights. Tellish, Cat, and I are currently creating some projects that need to be done to improve our new home. Things like archiving the old thread, revising/rewriting the faq/rules to make them easier to read/use/understand, auditing new characters, auditing existing characters, etc. As we continue to set-up these projects, we will make them available for those who want extra credits to participate in.

Ok, fair enough.
