| LLMadCow05-19-04, 01:54 AM | WELCOME TO GLADIUS Good day everyone. This is where I discuss what I have been up to behind the scenes. I have invested a GREAT deal of time on the City Gladius. I plan to take some time to describe the map that I am drwaing and what it entails. Much of what I have is very flexible and can easily be changed, but other portions are pretty fixed, baring any major issues that you, the players in the arena, have. I open this thread as a place for discussion and thought. I have opinions and want a response. I have taken some liberties with drawing and designing and working on the layout that defines the city all of our wonderful characters live in. I do not invest this much time on a mechanic or a tool. I invest this much time to bring to life the city that is our world. The Arena may be to test builds, but Gladius is to have fun and add color to our often black and white world. In following posts I will attempt to give a basic example of what I am working with and answer any questions that people pose. |
| LLMadCow05-19-04, 01:56 AM | Gladius currently takes up most of 9, 8-1/2" x 11" sheets of graph paper layed out in a rectangle that is wider than it is tall. I am going to attempt to 'DRAW' the city for a more visual representation of the most basic aspects of it... For the following image, it is best to understand that the layout of Gladius has been broken into 10 basic areas. \ \ \ R \[ 1 ][ 2 ][ 3 ] \ I \ 4 ][ 5 ][ 6 ] \ V \ 7 ][ 8 ][8.5][ 9 ] \ E \[ 10 ] \ R \ Each portion will be listed as follows: # Terrain - Name of Area(What is here) Burroughs / Districts / Areas (Or whatever we decide to call the divisions) 1 Hills-Arkhein Heights (Nobility Housing) 2 Hills / Plains - Arcadivus (Magical Comunity) 3 Plains - Upper Merx (Market Places - Upper) 4 Hills / Plains - Kailo (Good Side of town, business) 5 Plain - The Arena (The Arena and Mo Square) 6 Plains - Vilis (Bad Side of town, business) 7 Plains - Lower Merx (Market Places - Lower) 8 Plains - Kelartus (Commoner Housing) 8.5 Varied - Training Grounds (Arena Training Grounds) 9 Forest / Plains + Lake - Jindl Park (City Park) 10 Waterfront - Duken Marina (The docks and a marina) I will expand on each of these with a more in depth description. |
| LLMadCow05-19-04, 02:43 AM | Arkhein Heights (Nobility Housing) Arkhein Heights is North-West of The Arena. The land is mostly hills, leading to a more mountainous area outside of Gladius. The Nobility have settled here and developed a rather large, upscale community. There are a series of plateaus that act like steps, each one over looking the rest of the city as you get further out. It is rumored that many of the Elders, old and new, live there. Arcadivus (Magical Comunity) Arcadivus is just North of The Arena. The land is mostly plains. The magical community has taken over here. You will find churches, libraries, schools, temples, and many other places of magic, both Arcane and Divine. There may be different magical factions within, but they all get along, lest war break out within Gladius. You can find every major religion and also a come-one-come-all temple that is for anyone to worship whatever god they choose. Bards, Sorcerers, Wizards, Clerics, Paladins, Druids, Rangers and the occassional Rogue congregate here. Upper Merx (Market Places - Upper) Upper Merx is located North-East of The Arena. The land is mostly plains. Shops of all kinds are found here. Upper Merx is the primary shopping place for the Gladiators. There are plenty of brick and mortar shops, but just as many open air markets where different vendors set up shop. Festivals and parties occur here when the weather permits. Kailo (Good Side of town, business) Kailo is located West of The Arena. The land is mostly plains. This is where the business that support the town run. There are taverns, inns, bars and a wide range of reputable business' running out of here. There is a winery and the oh so famous Motherbast Apothecary. The Arena (The Arena and Mo Square) The Arena is the center of town. Mo Square is surrounding The Arena and has roads leading into each of the outer portions of Gladius. Mo Square is the premire site for pre-fight events, parties and festival site for major holidays. Vilis (Bad Side of town, business) Vilis is located East of The Arena. The land is mostly Plains and this is just the opposite of Kailo. Vilis is where all of the shady dealings within Gladius take place. Some things are more overt, others covert. Illegal gambling, drugs, and a wide variety of other felonious activities occur here. Lower Merx (Market Places - Lower) Lower Merx is South-West of The Arena. The land is mostly plains, leading into the Duken Marina. Lower Merx is the center of trade that supports Gladius' business. Goods are imported and exported through the Duken Marina and otherwise, Lower Merx is the mirror image of Upper Merx. Kelartus (Commoner Housing) Kelartus is located South of The Arena. The land is mostl flat. The commoners that sell in the market places and work in Kailo and Vilis and keep the city running at the most base and primitive levels, live in Kelartus. The streets are narrow, the housing packed. Theirs is a simple life, and when there are serious problems, the citizens of Kelartus turn to the rest of Gladius for help. The rest of Gladius always lends a hand, whether it be rebuilding after a major fire, or healing the sick from a plague sweeping through; without the people of Kelartus, Gladius might well crumble. Training Grounds (Arena Training Grounds) The Training Grounds are South-East of The Arena and are actually part of the Arena compound. The training gounds are where gladiators and aspiring gladiators practice their skills. The can have battles and many of the commoners host their very own gladiatorial battles. Once a year, aspiring youth from within Gladius gather here to compete. The winners of such events often get sponsored by Elders or other Pitlords to eneter into actual arena combat. Jindl Park (City Park) Jindl Park is located South-East of The Arena. It is bumping up against the training grounds. There is a vast forest and rumors abound that the forest is magical. People ooften get lost within the center of the forest, and some say it takes less time to walk all the way around the park than it does to walk through it. The true nature of the park may only be known to a few druids... Duken Marina (The docks and a marina) Duken Marina is locatd South-West of The Arena and bumps up against Lower Merx. The marina is where goods are imported and exported and visitors are known to arrive from all over the world. The marina is just off of a major river (Currently unnamed). One end of the river is a large, inland sea, and the other end is the ocean. There are no bridges across the river, but there are several ferries, both for people and larger ones for livestock, carts and larger beasts. |
| LLMadCow07-10-04, 11:30 AM | @ALL - I am looking for a lot of filler for the city. There are portions that I am leaving empty due to future expansion and/or definition, but I would like a WHOLE LOTTA suggestions. Please review the first part of this thread and then feel free to go wild and make suggestions. I am getting to the point where I want Gladius to be more substansial. Hopefully by the early fall I will be able to get a final copy to Cat and he can scan and post it... |
