Our FAQ/Default Character sheet/Quickstart Guide need maintanence. I will be updating these items regularly as the Elders reach new decisions and new rules are implemented. I would also like to provide a forum where players could identify changes that need to be made as well as make suggestions for more changes.

General rules
Always open!
You can modify your build at will until you're ready, then title it as ready. At that point, it will be written on the roster! You may go on modifying it until the pairings are set, but not after.
pairings procedure: weekly, a set of pairings will be posted here, among ready characters. Tactics will then be accepted: participants may send them by mail to the dm, they will be revealed on the fight posting.
The default tactics on the build are in case you forget or can't send the email with the tactic by two days.
No editing on the builds is allowed after 9 PM GMT, or you'll either not be paired or automatically lose the match! The post date is hard proof. This is to prevent character's from changing equipment for the specific opponent.
Fight procedure: fights will run weekly on the fights thread. Much effort is requested by a pitlord. If they do any errors, you may kindly post them on the "Fights of the Week" thread. It is at the pitlord's discrection whether to modify the fight to correct errors! In addition, such comments should be very useful for future reference.
Matches are held in the arena displayed in code format above. It is a cylinder of 150,5' radius, 155' height. Characters start at 205' from each other and at 50' from the wall. There are some obstacles for characters to hide behind, but they've to move to reach them. At start the characters can't see each others, and will have to move some distance in order to do so. Allies begin adjacent to your square, unless you are mounted on them. Allies cannot begin closer to your opponent than the PC.
The first person to die, loses the match.
The winner of the match goes up one level and receives a cash purse in accordance with the Wealth by Level table in the DMG on page 145 (see below).

Characters
Only Core 3.5 (http://www.wizards.com/D20/article.asp?x=srd35) material including psionics is allowed: this means only 3.5 PHB, 3.5 DMG, 3.5 MM, EPH, and Official Errata's / FAQ's. The primary rules reference will be the SRD.
You may post up to one character, unless you want to moderate fights (see below). Use the standard sheet for the character, and remember to write "ready " and the date of the next pairings in the subject block of the post when you're done.
Characters start at ECL 2 with 1000 gp of equipment, standard 36 point buy.
Hps: PC's will have the first HD maximized. Additional HD's will grant hp's as shown below. The total hp's will then be rounded down to the nearest number. Example: A Wiz4 with a 12 Con would have: 4 + 3 x 2.5 + 4 x 1 = 4 + 7.5 + 4 = 15.5 hps, which rounds down to 15 hps.
Allies do not get a maximized first HD. Instead, they gain the hps shown below for each HD (including the first) and then round down to the nearest number. Example: A 5 HD skeleton ally would have: 5 x 6.5 = 32.5 hps, which rounds down to 32 hps.
1d4 = 2.5 hps
1d6 = 3.5 hps
1d8 = 4.5 hps
1d10 = 5.5 hps
1d12 = 6.5 hps

All standard PHB races, standard EPH races, and all creatures in the MM/EPH with a listed Level Adjustment (LA) are allowed. Creatures whose ECL is greater than 2 may only be used as PC's if the player spends credits (see below). Remember: ECL = HD (racial and class levels) + LA.
Prepared spells: Prepared spellcasters must list half of their prepared spells (rounded down) on their character sheets prior to pairings. These prepared spells may not be changed after pairings.
Buffs: You may enter the arena with effects running that have a duration of 16 hours or more, which we call Pre-Buffs. Pre-Buffs with a duration of "permanent" or "until discharged" should be listed as part of your equipment. All other Pre-Buffs should be listed in the Pre-Buff section of your character sheet. Pre-Buff's listed as equipment typically do not count against your spell slots / special ability uses for the day. Pre-Buffs listed in the Pre-Buff section do count against your spell slots or special ability uses that are available for the day. Spell-storing items are considered to be Pre-Buffs which you list in the equipment section, and are the only Pre-Buffs where you may receive assistance from an NPC or Ally. PC's may pay for spellcasting services to store spells into spell-storing items. In order to Pre-buff with a psionic focus, the psionic character must have a Concentration skill of at least +0 (assumed to take 20 on the check).
In addition to advancing a level, the winner of a fight receives the following monetary awards, depending on the level of their fight:
Level 2 = 1,700 gp
Level 3 = 2,700 gp
Level 4 = 3,600 gp
Level 5 = 4,000 gp
Level 6 = 6,000 gp
Level 7 = 8,000 gp
Level 8 = 9,000 gp
Level 9 = 13,000 gp
Level 10 = 17,000 gp
Level 11 = 22,000 gp
Level 12 = 22,000 gp
Level 13 = 40,000 gp
Level 14 = 50,000 gp
Level 15 = 60,000 gp
Level 16 = 80,000 gp
Level 17 = 100,000 gp
Level 18 = 140,000 gp
Level 19 = 180,000 gp.
Characters that should have an xp cost penalty to level for multiclass restriction will have a gp penalty instead: 120% xp -> 5/6 the gold prize; 140% -> 5/7; 160% -> 5/8; 180% -> 5/9; 200% -> 5/10 and so on. Indicate that your character has paid this cost as an expense on your character sheet, after you recieve the full amount of gold for your level.
Post-fight procedure: Edit the existing character sheet to mark any items used, new items bought, new abilities gained, etc. Keep a record of every item bought, used, or sold. Do not do a new post for each version as you level, this way on the roster there will always be the corect link to your character.
After three consecutive losses, a character is entitled to being "bumped" to the next level: he gets the same amount of gold as if he won. But the roster will reflect it. IMPORTANT: Write it on the sheet title line or the roster keeper might not note it!
There are no rolls out of the arena.

Equipment
Crafting items: The cost for crafting nonmagical items with skills is 1/2 the market price. There are no time constraints on creating items in the arena.
Enchanting items: The cost of enchanting magic/psionic items is as core rules: 1/2 the market price. The xp costs are simulated applying the additional cost of 5 gp/xp. Normally, things with no additional xp cost will thus cost (1/2+5/25)= 7/10 the market value to create. There are no time constraints for enchanting items in the arena. Enchanted items may be upgraded by paying the difference in cost to craft. For example: Upgrading a Headband of Intellect +2 to a +4 bonus costs: 0.7 x (16000 - 4000) = 0.7 x 12000 = 8,400 gp.
In the case of using Craft skills and the Handle Animal skill outside of the arena, you are assumed to be Taking 10 on the skill check. For example, to craft a masterwork weapon, you need a Craft: Weapons +10 modifier, to reach the DC of 20.
The DC for poisons made by Craft: Poison is equal to the Fort Save DC +10 for the specific type of poison you are trying to make.
In the case of using Item Creation Feats to enchant items, you must satisfy all requirements to craft the item yourself. You may not get assistance from any NPC or Ally to enchant an item. Please note: By recent Sage ruling, a character trying to enchant an item no longer must be of equal or higher caster level than the item's caster level. The character still must meet all other requirements to create the item.
Some items may be both crafted and enchanted by the PC. For example, a PC wants to craft and enchant a +1 adamantium greatsword. The costs are broken down seperately. The cost to craft is 1/2 the market price, which is 0.5 x (3000 gp + 50 gp) = 1525 gp and requires the crafter to be able to pass a DC 20 Craft check (assumed to Take 10 on the roll). The cost to enchant is 0.7 x the market price = 0.7 x 2000 gp = 1400 gp and requires the Craft Arms and Armor feat. The total cost to make the blade "from scratch" is 1550 + 1400 = 2950 gp.
Custom Potions, Staves, Rings, Rods, and Wondrous Items are not allowed. Scrolls and Wands may be purchased / crafted containing any spell and any metamagic feats, within the Core rules. Generic Weapons and Armors may be purchased / crafted using only the listed Special Abilities / Special Armors. The Special Weapons and Armors may only be purchased / crafted as the standard listed in the 3.5 DMG. You must buy / purchase wands that are fully charged, and you must buy / purchase ammunition in stacks as listed in the 3.5 DMG. Some examples:
You may craft or purchase a scroll: empowered magic missile (CL9).
You may not craft or purchase a potion: shield (CL1).
You may craft or purchase +1 ghost touch mithril chainshirt.
You may not craft or purchase a +1 ghost touch Sunblade.
You may only craft of purchase wands that have 50 charges.
You may only craft or purchase generic +1 arrows in multiples of 50.
Any destroyed items will be replaced after the fight. Items that are used by the PC (such as a scroll that was cast) are not replaced.
Allies lost during the fight must be re-acquired in the same manner that they were originally obtained. Negative consequences for the death of your ally apply normally. In the case of the death of a Familiar, the Pitlord who is running the fight should roll the Fort save immediately upon the death of the Familiar, and subtract an appropriate amount of gp (5 gp / 1xp) from the Master at the end of the fight. Negative consequences based upon time (such as the 1 month period before a Paladin can summon a new special mount) do NOT apply.

Allies
Only one ally may be brought in the arena, so druids and wizard or sorcerers may not drag in the mount and an animal companion or familiar. They might possess both though, and summoning during the fight is fine.
Allies: you may buy any mount present in the SRD, even those in the MM, for the listed price: it is the price of rearing and training the mount. DCs for training have to be reached by taking 10. The familiars follow the listed prices, xp costs as usual are 5 gp/xp.
Class features like animal companions or paladin special mounts are free. Any characteristics are the ones listed in the source books: hps don't follow the "first maxed" rule. You can select anything with a listed LA - even LA = 0 - as your cohort.
Monster fights: for handle Animal, where you have to find the pet, and Animate Dead, where you have to find the corpse, and similar ones, where you are not provided of the material for free, you have to fight with the monster before having the chance of using it. Ask for the fight writing it on the sheet title.
The fight will be in place of the character's fight of the week. It will count as two fights, as the Pitlord has to work for just one player.
Important: if you gain a handled monster, corpse or anything else through a monster fight, you'll have to add a link to the monster fight in the special section. Check below to see how to add links, in the lower part of the roster.
>Handle Animals (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=4037564) possible allies (Thanks Jindl, Caterane, and Druid Roxors)
Leadership grants you an ally for free. You may get any monster with a listed LA (level adjustment), its level for the purpose of leadership is ECL=LA+ racial HDs. Cohorts are built in the same manner as PC's, but using a 25 pt buy. Cohorts may advance as appropriate for the monster description (either through HD's or by adding class levels), and may have templates. Cohorts do not arrive with any wealth or equipment. The player must purchase all equipment for the cohorts from his winnings. The exception is cohort wizards, who do arrive with their spellbook containing all spells they learned for free by starting/advancing in level.
Cohorts may not craft items.

Pitlords
You may post more than one character only if you spontaneously offer yourself to run fights. No particular skill is needed, save a good knowledge of the core rules and some free time. Pitlords may have to run up to one fight for any character posted beyond the first, more will give a credit. Board Administration counts as running 1 fight (for Caterane, Jindl, Tellish_of_Ket, and Moherajikuyx.)
Pitlords will never run a fight with a character of theirs.
New Pitlords are always welcome. To lower the first time problems, you'll start from a level 2 match, and grow every time you moderate a fight.
On a fight posting there must be: the official version of both characters, the tactics that were sent, and the fight description. Pitlords may use an online roller (>this (http://krisinchico.brinkster.net/rolldata.asp), for example) or roll at home, as they prefer. They have the responsibility of checking out the validity of a build and the correctness of the equipment.
It is at the Pitlord's discretion whether to re-run a fight to correct major errors. This practice is generally discouraged, but may be done in the interests of fairness.
Be sure to read the important guidelines, in case of fights that involve the following aspects of the rules (warm thanks to Tellish_of_Ket):
>Hide/Spot and Move Silently/Listen (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=1691088): very important also with invisible pcs.
>Undead Companions (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=2088233) raised with Animate Dead.
>Charge & Jump/Balance (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=2098685), when the things are combinable
>Mounted Combat (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=2098689): It's possible to double move & attack
Delays: in case of tactics that cause unnecessary or excessive delays (in excess of 10 rounds), Pitlords are welcome to bring in elements that favour the other gladiator (ex: the crowd throws rocks at the invisible, nothing doing wizard)
You may pay 3*(x-2) credits to add to the roster an ECL x pc that could not get in instead (x>2).
IMPORTANT: write the ECL on the sheet title to help the roster keeper!

FAQ
Where does this board originate?
It once was a lonely thread in the Character Optimization board. Moherajikuyx created it after seeing the debacle of more than one non-core arena. This one instead became a board all of itself: seems it was the right way! ;)
Why is this thread Core only?
The workload of the dms - Pitlords, here - when they have to check a core character is already incredible.
With non core stuff, it grows exponentially and this caused the failure of quite some arenas. If you want to try, you're welcome, you've got a whole board where you can have fun! (And I'll join too ;))
Why do you use the Pitlords login for some posts?
Because this way GMs may modify the roster, pairings, FAQ and so on: I go on holidays sometimes too! :)
This way, GMs have a nice, neutral login where they may edit stuff without anyone protesting.
Why are pre-buffs allowed only for spells with a min. 16 hour duration?
For a balancing factor. This lets the Extended Spell feat useful, and 24 h min makes it difficult to have mage armour from scratch, which from past experience in other threads is quite frustrating for fighters. This rule is under beta testing, though: if prebuffs are unbalancing, they will removed totally.
Do i have to post the whole tactics of the character or the
generic? Do i have to post the tactics? By Nikademus
You have to post default tactics under your build.
When you'll know your pairing, for your next match, you'll have to post here or mail to the dm a "personalized" tactic, best suited for your enemy.
This way, you shall have your best tactic used if you send it, and if once you forget to send the tactics to the dm, he will have something to work with. If you didn't post the default tactic, the dm will probably run your pc in a silly way just to make the arena have fun.

Standard Character Sheet:
You'll have to comply with this sheet for what concerns all the informations and their positions; you may do any other changes, like adding colors and so on. Everything Italic can be deleted. The Title line is an important thing: it allows GMs to be fast when updating the roster, so be sure to fill in the info requested. Please keep the subtitles bold and underlined: it helps Pitlords with finding the informations.

Post subject line: name - ready for (date) - challenges /accepts challenge / ECL
It's important that you add these info on the title, else you risk to see your pc not OKed for the next pairings or the challenge not set. The ECL is important in case you bump your pc or if you are a Pitlords who paid to have an ECL>2 pc. Errors in any of these could make the pc lose next fight.

Post body:
Click Quote, then delete all is not needed. Important notice: dms will copy the courier part of the sheet in the fights, the rest is there for fun. You can chose another font than courier, but the subtitles shall be set to bold and underlined.

The Quick Start Guide

"Welcome Traveler! You have just entered the City of Gladius! If you wear your weapons and spell components for more than to impress the Ladies, enter the Core Coliseum, and prove it infront of cheering audiences, a place where you can find Fame and Fortune in no time, and Death even quicker!"

I am Joe, the Arena Organizer. I will give you a tour through the Core Coliseum (CoCo) and assist you in helping to create a gladiator. Leave this window open aswell as the one from where you came from (the Gladiators thread).

Creating a Gladiator:

The Gladiators thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=190985) (the one from where you just followed the link) is perhaps the most important one in the CoCo (click on the link). The very first post is made by Moherajikuyx (or Mo), the Founder of the CoCo. Please scroll down one post. This is the Roster. Here you will find all gladiators sorted by level. You will later post your own gladiator which will be added to the Roster (level 2) and he will fight other gladiators within his league. If you win this fight, you earn money to buy new equipment and advance a level (to level 3). Over time, your gladiator will become more and more powerful, but so will your enemies...

The next post shows the Pairings. Pairings are being rolled randomly every wednesday, and you will be paired against one of the other gladiators in your league. Study your foe well (you'll find a link to his/her sheet on the Roster) and devise a tactic how you will beat him. Behind the colon of your pairing you will find the name of the Pitlord. Scroll down one post.

Here you will find the Pitlords. A Pitlord is a referee and he will run your fight. In order to do this you must send your tactic (against your paired foe) to his email adress. Your opponoment does the same. The Pitlord will then run the fight at home - using the online roller or his own dice - according to your (and the other one's) tactics. As soon as he is finished, he will post the fight on the Fights thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=69954&goto=lastpost). Many pitlords write a story around your fight to make it even more interesting. Scroll down one post.

The Arena Map. This is the dome where the fights take place. "A" and "B" mark your and your opponoment's respective starting position. Study the map well when writing tactics because you can gain a lot of advantages by using the obstacles provided in the arena. Scroll down one post.

The Rules of the Game. You are well advised to read this section sooner or later to prevent any mistakes that might happen over time. If you have any questions, ask your fellow members and pitlords in the Core Coliseum Tavern (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=192697&goto=lastpost) and you will surely receive a quick answer. Scroll down one post.

This is the Default Character Sheet. It is not mandatory but newcomers are advised to use this one for simplicities sake. You can devise your own character sheet later when you have more experience with the CoCo Rules. But let's get started, won't we?

Click the http://boards1.wizards.com/images/quote.gif (http://boards1.wizards.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=2700278) button at the bottom of the Default Character Sheet post (or click on this icon :)). A new window will open and you can now begin to post your gladiator.

Posting a gladiator isn't difficult. There are however some minor things that you should be aware of. Your gladiator starts at level 2 (or level 1 if you want to use a race with a level adjustment of +1, like an aasimar or a tiefling for example) and gets 1000 gp starting cash with which he/she buys the necessary equipment to survive in the arena. Delete the sections you don't need (like 'Spells memorized' if you play a fighter, for example), fill out the rest and write "Ready for x/x" in the headline (where x/x is the date of the next wednesday).

Now write a http://boards1.wizards.com/images/sendpm.gif (http://boards1.wizards.com/private.php?do=newpm&userid=245524) to the Pitlord Account (or just click this icon) to anounce that your gladiator is ready to fight! Your gladiator will appear on the Roster within one or two days.

Important Basic Rules:

As I mentioned earlier, you should sooner or later take the time to read through the Rules of the Game (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=post2700272) section but I will list the most important parts here. You may freely edit your character sheet any time until wednesday 9 PM GMT at which time one of the GMs will roll the pairings. It is perhaps a good thing to set your board time to GMT in order to make sure you don't miscalculated the time zones.

My Account -> Edit options -> Time Zone: GMT (Western European Time)

Note that prepared spellcasters (wizards, clerics, druids, etc) must memorize all of their spells before the pairings are set!

Write a tactic against your paired opponoment, send it to the pitlord, and wait until he posts your fight on the fights thread. Do not edit your sheet until your fight is up, else you will automatically lose the match.

If you won the fight, you'll earn money as mentioned in the rules of the game. For a 2nd level match (like yours) you win 1700 gp which you can freely spend on equipment. However, you also have to delete all expandable items that have been used, like potions or scrolls. Please add a section on the bottom of your character sheet where you list all past expenditures aswell as everything you bought.

You also must set a link to your fight. This is important so that our auditors have an easy job to check your character sheet and track your expenditures. To set a link, hover the cursor over the http://boards1.wizards.com/images/quote.gif button (but don't click on it!). You will notice a link in your status bar which has a 6-diggit number at the end. Write this number down.

Now copy and paste the purple code below into your character sheet (preferably at the bottom) and substitute the words NUMBER with the number you wrote down.

Alright Traveler, I have provided you with the basic knowledge you need to participate in the CoCo. You will learn the rules quickly and over time you will become a master tactitian, an expert on the D&D 3.5 rules, and a respected member on this board where everyone knows everyone.

Good luck!

All suggestions/changes will be listed here. Changes in Black represent changes that have yet to be approved or made. Changes in Gray are changes that have been approved and made. Changes is Red are suggestions that were not approved.

Suggestions/Changes
• Default tactics should be a suggestion, not a requirement.
• Allies can prebuff the PC, but only if they appear in the fight.
• All allies are ressurrected for free.
• Jindl's default character sheet.
• Templates may be gained by active gladiators for 4 credits per ECL.
• Prebuffs only may target the PC or an ally.
• Prebuffs begin their effects at the start of the match.
• Players can begin with 2 prebuffs (of any duration).
• Organize the "stickies" into more posts with only a single major topic per sticky.
• Include a section labelled "Core Rules Interpretations for the CoCo".
• Allies must be fully detailed on the character sheet.
•

Please post your suggestions or changes that need to be made to the FAQ/Default Character sheet/Quickstart Guide below:

Please keep any discussions to a minimum, or transfer them to the Tavern.

One thing I always wondered about was why the cash prize for lvl 11 and 12 matches are equal (both are listed as 22k in the FAQ). These two lvls are the only ones with that issue.

I think the template used for Rhoar's character sheet should become the default character sheet. It's simple to read, covers all the accounting issues, has a clean/pleasant appearance, and is adaptable to cover individual qualities of both the player and the gladiator.

EDIT: Per KerlanRayne's suggestion, the default character sheet should list value of all equipment owned. (Rhoar currently only lists value of equipment purchased since the last fight).

Currently, the CoCo uses a monetary award system that results in the gladiator's total gold recieved (including starting wealth and gold awarded for all fights won) being equal to the Wealth by Level chart on pg 135 of the DMG. This chart increases by 22k from 11th to 12th level and again by 22k from 12th to 13th level.

Please see this post for a change which limits prebuffs to spells/effects that target the PC or an ally (already mentioned by Pittbull in the post above). Additionally, I think prebuffs should have their effect begin when the combat begins (which prevents using the eversmoking bottle to start the match with the entire arena within the fog, and similar abuses).

An easy solution to the prebuffs is to limit them to a certain number, and not a 16 hour duration. Each character gets 2 prepatory actions (full castin of contingency is 1 action, etc.) and then the battle begins. Preps cannot effect the arena nor the opposing characters in anyway.

Comments?

Also, I feel that the opening posts should be divided into many more individual posts, which are more focused on a single aspect of the arena or it's rules, perhaps even more individual threads that are sticky, making it easier for new players to navigate and find answers/what they need.

that kills the fighters ability to get an advantage over the more powerful casters, the mage will get several 'free' rounds while the fighter twittles his thumbs

the 16hour duration a good way to determin prebuffs because there are only a handful of spells that can have a duration of that high, and of those less than a handfull are attacking

I see your point, but non-spellcasters can drink a potions/activate their magic items/tattoos just the same. Everyone gets the 2 free actions, from level 2 to level 20. And since they cannot be offensive in nature (not affect the arena or other characters), they will create for more dynamic situations, where characters can go defensive, something that within the CoCo is not all that possible, as speed kills... I win Init, I win the fight... gee, that's fun and realistic in the realm of D&D...? Hope this sheds some more light on where I was comming from :D

Plus, there are many instances - We are going to burst into that room and attack the bad guys, so let's prepare out here first before we suprise the - or situations, which will never arise in the CoCo due to it's current rules, leaving out many preparatory spells and items as buffs due to the long duration currently needed. Fire Shield is a good spell that will probably never be used - having the ability to activate that tattoo of skate and drink the potion of haste will help the fighter as he will come out of the gates with blazing speed, instead of 1 to 2 rounds later...

I think it's very bad on accounting issues. You never list item costs except for the current round. As I think Ash found out, that makes it VERY hard to check gold use. Case in point is right here:
Total Gold Earned: 110000 gp
Total Gold Spent: 110594.1 gp
Gold Remaining: 39405.9 gpIs it just me, or is this completely wrong. We can't check the problem either, because you don't list prices for all your equipment.

@KerlanRayne -

I agree regarding listing all equipment values (and have edited my above suggestion to reflect this). I've begun doing that on my new PC's (see Taryn Thunderstorm). Rhoar just hasn't been updated yet for this (currently, he only lists values for equipment purchased since his last fight).

Thanks for pointing out the error. It should read Total Gold Earned: 150000 gp. I have made the change.

It is not a rules interpretation, please see the DMG, page 238, 1st paragraph under Activation. It states that you must be a spellcaster. Rangers/Paladins are not spellcasters until level 4...

Doesn't matter, I believe it's a good idea. As long as WotC are being lazy about putting out FAQs, there's no harm in us putting out our own.

The FAQ should clearly delineate whether something is a CoCo house rule (like banning the Gate spell, or the 16-hour prebuff rule), or a rules interpretation (like Rangers not using scrolls), though. Have sepeare sections, or even have them written in different colors.

Note: if any official (WotC) source ever contradicts our "interpretation" FAQ, then of course they win, and our FAQ should be changed ASAP.

If you go to the Rules of The Game - Using Magic Items Part 2. It talks somewhat about this issue. In the Spell Completion section it explains that Rangers/Paladins can still use Spell Trigger items (wands, staffs, etc..) but are considered to have a caster level of 0 (zero). So I think the intent and its just my opinion is that you need a caster level greater then 0 (zero) in order to attempt to use a scroll, or you need to fake it with UMD.

Suggestions:

1. I don't understand the 16 hour prebuff rule at all. I can't even conceive of one with that duration. So I support efforts to change the prebuff rules. Simplest would be that you can prepare for a few rounds before the referee starts the fight.

2. Minor phrasing issue -- there are places where you say "X rules apply normally. Well, actually, there's an exception." Those could be rephrased to "Rules apply normally, with the following exception ..." Example: Gold for XP in magic item creation cost.

3. The default character sheet is overwhelming. I support any effort to change it.

4. If a wizard has to announce what spells he has memorized, this puts him at a major disadvantage vs. the regular game, in which you don't know what the wizard you're up against is likely to throw.

5. I haven't been able to figure out easily who's here and who isn't and so on. Does it make sense to create a new 2nd level character? Would I even find opponents? Some clarification along those lines would be welcome.

6. Things could be a little more spelled out. I eventually figured out that ECL is something like Equivalent Class Level, and it's from the Monster Manual that I don't have, but the whole arena would seem less forbidding if there were a little more spelling out of such things. Ditto LA for Level Adjustment?

Thanks!!!

1. I don't understand the 16 hour prebuff rule at all. I can't even conceive of one with that duration. So I support efforts to change the prebuff rules. Simplest would be that you can prepare for a few rounds before the referee starts the fight. We were trying to simulate a real game more closely. Also, just giving a few prep rounds favors casters too much. It's mostly for higher level casters too. Extended Mage Armor is popular, Contingency too.

3. The default character sheet is overwhelming. I support any effort to change it.What exactly is the problem. We've tried to make it clean and simple. We kind of need everything on there. Any suggestions?

4. If a wizard has to announce what spells he has memorized, this puts him at a major disadvantage vs. the regular game, in which you don't know what the wizard you're up against is likely to throw.Spellcasters normally prepare all spells ahead of time. We tried to come up with a way to have all spells declared in secret before being paired in a fight, but it just got too complicated.

5. I haven't been able to figure out easily who's here and who isn't and so on. Does it make sense to create a new 2nd level character? Would I even find opponents? Some clarification along those lines would be welcome. We have a roster of currently active characters in the Gladiators & FAQ thread. It lists all the most recent opponents. If it says "wait" next to their name, they are in a fight for this week. This week, 6 out of 7 characters are in fights. Right before pairings, you can click on the link to the character and check the date in the heading to see if they will fight or not.

6. Things could be a little more spelled out. I eventually figured out that ECL is something like Equivalent Class Level, and it's from the Monster Manual that I don't have, but the whole arena would seem less forbidding if there were a little more spelling out of such things. Ditto LA for Level Adjustment? We started out in the Character Optimization Forum where most people there know the rules inside and out. We'll try to make it more clear. Also, since you don't have all of the books, you can use the SRD link in my signature. Very useful. If you use the link at the bottom of the SRD you can also download a copy that you can use offline.

General rules
Always open!
You can modify your build at will until you're ready, then title it as ready with [Ready for "DATE"]. Put the full date of the Wednesday coming up next. At that point, it will be written on the roster! You may go on modifying it until the pairings are set, but not after.
Pairings Procedure: Every wednesday, a set of pairings will be posted here, among ready characters. Tactics may then be sent by email or PM to the Pitlord, they will be revealed on the fight posting.
The default tactics on the build are in case you forget or can't send the email with the tactic by two days.
No editing on the builds is allowed after 9 PM GMT Wednesday, or you'll either not be paired or automatically lose the match!

Characters
Only Core 3.5 (http://www.wizards.com/D20/article.asp?x=srd35) material including psionics is allowed: this means only 3.5 PHB, 3.5 DMG, 3.5 MM, Psionics SRD, and Official Errata's / FAQ's. The primary rules reference will be the SRD.
You may post up to one character, unless you want to moderate fights (see below). Use the standard sheet for the character, and remember to write "ready " and the date of the next pairings in the subject block of the post when you're done.
Characters start at an Effective Character Level (ECL) of 2 with 1000 gp of equipment, standard 36 point buy.
HPs: PC's will have the first HD maximized. Additional HD's will grant hp's as shown below. The total hp's will then be rounded down to the nearest number. Example: A Wiz4 with a 12 Con would have: 4 + (3 x 2.5) + (4 x 1) = 4 + 7.5 + 4 = 15.5 hps, which rounds down to 15 hps.
Allies do not get a maximized first HD. Instead, they gain the hps shown below for each HD (including the first) and then round down to the nearest number. Example: A 5 HD skeleton ally would have: 5 x 6.5 = 32.5 hps, which rounds down to 32 hps.
1d4 = 2.5 hps
1d6 = 3.5 hps
1d8 = 4.5 hps
1d10 = 5.5 hps
1d12 = 6.5 hps

All standard PHB races, standard Psionic SRD races, and all creatures in the MM/Psionic SRD with a listed Level Adjustment (LA) are allowed. Creatures whose ECL is greater than 2 may only be used as PC's if the player spends credits (see below). Remember: ECL = HD (racial and class levels) + LA.
Prepared spells: Prepared spellcasters must list all of their prepared spells on their character sheets prior to pairings.

Allies lost during the fight are resurected for free.

(Example: To make a First level Drow character which is ECL 3 you need 3*(3-2) = 3*1 = 3 credits)

You should post default tactics under your build.

Here are some suggested changes. After you make the changes you want, I will clear out this post so it won't be confusing with two copies.

We were trying to simulate a real game more closely. Also, just giving a few prep rounds favors casters too much. It's mostly for higher level casters too. Extended Mage Armor is popular, Contingency too.

I guess that makes sense.

What exactly is the problem. We've tried to make it clean and simple. We kind of need everything on there. Any suggestions?

I like the .doc style character sheets, but maybe there's a technical issue with those.

In any case, I think I'd prefer to see a template and a set of instructions, rather than intermixig of the two.

We started out in the Character Optimization Forum where most people there know the rules inside and out. We'll try to make it more clear. Also, since you don't have all of the books, you can use the SRD link in my signature. Very useful. If you use the link at the bottom of the SRD you can also download a copy that you can use offline.

Thanks. I have links to the official SRD and a hypertext version of the SRD. It frankly never occurred to me to look through the monster portion. My fault.

As another suggestion, right at the top of the FAQ/rules I'd indicate what can be found or what should be posted in threads of what name.

So if I make a Level 2 character, there won't be anybody to fight anyway??

I was just assuming the list I could find was very partial.

Er... not sure what you mean. There are seven level 2 gladiators: Aureus Naοlo, Harathin, Sir Anton of Kantall, Derthark Thunderbeard, Razor the Storm, Illyx Solus, and Hagrid.

If you make a level 2 character you will get paired next Wednesday and fight one of the other characters at level two. (the one who got rolled out or one of the three loosers or another new character)

So you will get an opponent to fight.

@Dalton -

Thanks for your FAQ suggestions. Please relocate any additional discussion regarding character creation and pairings to the Tavern. I'd really like to keep this thread On Topic and limited to FAQ Update Suggestions.

@KerlanRayne -

Thanks. That's basically what I was going to do (I was just waiting until enough time had passed for other people to comment on the suggestions, then do a major edit all at once).

That being said, the major edit will occur tonight / tomorrow.
