| Jindl04-01-04, 12:04 PM | Please post any comments and concerns for Fights for the Week of 3/31/04 here: -Jindl |
| xeno_eleusis04-03-04, 04:34 AM | @Magagumo, nice modding, quick and not too many mistakes. Couple questions though. 1) Why did you use 50% consealment in the last round for Brock? He doesn't have a reach weapon and could not have hit from 10 ft away or more. 2) Boafers tactics say by round 4 if Brock in the mist to just attack. I think my tactics could have been more clear here but since he was getting hit, in character, he probably would have raged round 3 and attacked without Mage Armor. Brock had excellent rolls the entire match which ultimately caused Boafers demise. |
| Tellish_of_Ket04-03-04, 10:23 AM | Atk rolls me: 14, 9, 12 atk rolls horse: 15, 13 20% miss chances: 4 - 1 fails. (25%) 50% miss chances: 2 - 0 fails. dmg rolls, axe: 2, 1, 1 dmg rolls, horse: 6, 4 Xeno, i would hardly call those rolls luck. They are average at best. My highest dmg roll on dice was a 2, and we failed a 20% miss chance, which is right on par. The horse did good dmg, but that really doesn't balance out my own even. My median dmg on those thee hits is 28.5 and i did 16!!! Lets even take out one of those 50/50's and add median dmg to my other two shots, you're dead either way. What ultimately lead to boafer's demise was the warhorse and scent. My +7 listen helped with those DC 0 listen checks too, a decent ride modifier that had only a minute chance of failure. But i don't think luck had anything to do with it. -ToK just my .02 cp |
| Magagumo04-03-04, 12:07 PM | Just curious, Cat, but what happened to the 20% miss chance for Ony shooting into the area of darkness? I suppose there would eb miss chances on the disarm attempt and sunder attempt as well... In the future, Mods need to rem how Darkness works, as this is a useful tactic for Tori to use... what with being given a chance to hide in the open, force her opponents to possibly miss her in ranged battles, and potentially gain an advantage when within melee. Edit: Loved the story, Cat, but for future reference, Tori is female ;) |
| xeno_eleusis04-03-04, 01:29 PM | Originally posted by Tellish_of_Ket Atk rolls me: 14, 9, 12 atk rolls horse: 15, 13 ...Xeno, i would hardly call those rolls luck. They are average at best.First I want to say that to analyze stats with this small of a sample is pretty useless but here is the meaning behind my use of the word luck. ** edit, I didn't use the word luck, I said excellent. I consider anytime that you roll average to be excellent, it beats rolling 1's and 2's Average(14,9,12,15,13)=12.6 Which is 20% higher than the average 10.5 Maybe I was wrong to say that high rolls were to blame when Boafer never took a swing, he was modded as a Mage (which he is) but he is a "fighter at heart" and I just wish I had seen him take at least one swing. I guess tempo is a misunderstood term, I will be more clear in my future tactics. BTW, shouldn't Brock's first attack have been to sunder my wand anyway. ** edit maybe I'm not being modest enough, Boafer had little or no chance of beating a mounted fighter, they are just gross. |
| Tellish_of_Ket04-03-04, 02:31 PM | If i read correctly i believed i failed my spellcraft. And you being in the mist means i had no idea you were using it. But that's just me. To assume otherwise would have been meta-gaming. -ToK |
| Druid Roxors04-03-04, 02:34 PM | @ Cat: Not that it would change the outcome of the fight or anything, How did Dusk, a level 1 cleric, cast 10 cure light wounds while keeping full cover from his tower shield? (Which is now a standard action per turn)? |
| xeno_eleusis04-03-04, 02:53 PM | Originally posted by Tellish_of_Ket If i read correctly i believed i failed my spellcraft...Don't think you get a spellcraft check for wand activations. And since you were 5ft in front of me, given an average or even low spot check you could see the wand in my hand. ** edit, within 5 ft there is LOS, consealment but not total consealment, with AoO, spot checks, just miss chance like if I was in tall grass or something, but I can take a 5 ft step and get total consealment. Mist is not that great but in this fight (And now I'm "deceitful") it was my only defense. Again, I'm not arguing over the result of the fight. I think Boafers tactics were written a little more aggressively than they were run, more or less, "stand there and take it for 3 rounds without a swing", but I see Magaumo's point and you can definately interprete the tactics that way. I will have to be more clear about what I mean by tempo in the future. |
| MotherBast04-03-04, 03:07 PM | Cat: In the Dusk fight, I think I saw a few refrences to Improved Evasion lowering the damage on failed saves. First, how did Dusk have Improved Evasion, and second, if he did have it, then he would have taken 0 damage on all his successful saves. |
| Druid Roxors04-03-04, 03:14 PM | Yes, dusk was trying to use full cover against the cealing with his tower shield. I have no idea how this works, but I believe that the lightning bolt fills the whole square preventing cover from being applied. "The bolt of lightning flashes down in a vertical stroke at whatever target point you choose within the spell's range (measured from your position at the time). Any creature in the target square or in the path of the bolt is affected." Since the line of effect is against the square and not the subject, he woulnd't "block" or "Parry" the lightning bolt. |
| MotherBast04-03-04, 03:17 PM | Not to mention the Tower shield dosen't provide cover aginst targeted spells now. The FAQ states the spells can just target the shield, and still affect the character normaly. |
| Alterlat04-04-04, 01:01 AM | @CaptainMutilate: Someone already mentioned that you still get the 1.5 times strength on a two-handed weapon. Also, in the arena all a second twenty does is confirm the cirtical, not double it. But when there is a critical, roll all the dice, don't just roll one and multiply. However, as you said, with those rolls the fight should still go the same way. |
| SnarkHunter04-04-04, 01:02 AM | You've always been able to target towershields. Anywho-just for the record I think Ixidor has DR 5 not ten. Ciao. |
| Anouilh Lyn04-04-04, 03:13 AM | @Captain Mutilate thanks for Pitlording my first fight, but i've noticed a few problems in the whole combat, what my character did and all... first of all im new here, so i wasn't sure exactly how the combat was gonna work. i was expecting some more character interaction that telling you what i might do, and having you plan the whole fight out. thats also why my default stratagy had to be used. anyways... 1) AC for my PC = 17 with shield (2dex, +4 armor, +4 sheild, -1 size, -2 rage), not 15. 2) during round 5 when Tass double moved instead of charged (whats up with that?) and then getting Attack of Opportunitied for no reason (mind you, his reach goes to 10 ft when enlarged, so if he were to charge it would be illegal to go to -12, -25 anyway, he'd have to stop at -11, -24 and attack there) 3) with a charge he would get a net total of +9 to strike (+6str, +1 BAB, +1 Masterwork, +2 charge, -1 size), which would mean a 60% chance of hitting, with power attack that goes down to 55%. provided it did hit, thats 3d6+9 damage (from being enlarged and raging), which goes 12-27 damage, which means a roll of 8 or higher on a 3d6 would KO sharptooth, or a 6 or higher with power attack. so anyway, just curious about why it was a double move instead of a charge, because that would have really made a difference. the AoO from sharptooth didn't mean much when he crited on the following round. oh yeah, one thing im just curious about: why would you have him drink a potion of mage armor when the mage armor doesn't stack with the chainshirt's armor bonus? |
| Rozman04-04-04, 03:27 AM | Originally posted by MotherBast Not to mention the Tower shield dosen't provide cover aginst targeted spells now. The FAQ states the spells can just target the shield, and still affect the character normaly. Call Lightning is not a targeted spell. It effects a 5'x5' column. The tower shield would still apply full cover. The tower should still be damaged by the spell, but it wouldn't get destroyed by the single blast it took. It was used in Round 9 only. Assuming you were using the Improved Cover rules, this would give Dusk +4 on Reflex saves, and Improved Evasion. The saving throw still fails, and Improved Evasion leads to the half damage. From there on, no benefit is gained from the shield as Dusk is casting CLW each round instead. |
| MotherBast04-04-04, 09:13 AM | Ah, your right. 30' line of effect. I got thrown off by the description where it says "target point." Tower shield might have worked there, and gave the IE. I see now how that was done. Cool. |
| SnarkHunter04-04-04, 01:48 PM | @Anouilh: (wow how is that pronounced exactly?) As far as I could tell Sharptooth was running behind pillars to negate charges. However I'm not sure that would work since you had a weapon with reach and still might have been able to strike though your oppoent would have cover. @Captain Mut: The only other thing I noticed (And its a very common error) is that enlarge person is a 1 round casting time spell, so I don't think Tass could cast it and move before the next round. |
| TaggIIV04-04-04, 02:46 PM | Originally posted by Anouilh Lyn oh yeah, one thing im just curious about: why would you have him drink a potion of mage armor when the mage armor doesn't stack with the chainshirt's armor bonus? erm perhaps it was because I said "drink a potion of mage armor?" I didnt know that it didnt stack. |
| Tellish_of_Ket04-04-04, 04:12 PM | I'm seeing some of the same mistakes being repeated week after week. This thread exists for a reason. I think all pitlords should check back here after a day or two of posting the fight to see what mistakes were made and to respond to the players. Enlarge being a 1 round casting time, as with the various summons are constantly being overlooked. There are other errors as well and pitlords need to pay more attention to the mechanics of the game. The lower echelon of fights being moderated are riffe with errors. With that many errors, it doesn't lend a whole lot of credibility for new ppl reading and thinking about joining. Even if you THINK you know how something works, it never hurts to go back over it. I can't tell you how many times i've read and re-read rules/spells even though i THOUGH i knew them. Double checking and verifying never hurts. And on that note i want to say congradulations to MotherBast for re-reading the magic jar spell. When Market_Share told me his tactics, it sounded very plausible, but found it was in err after reading the spell myself. An inexperienced pitlord would have ran the fight "assuming Market knew what he was talking about" and have made a serious error. Good job MB on double checking what a gladiator "says he can do" with what the spell actually says it does. That is a prime example that we can all learn from. You can never go wrong by re-reading something you think you already know. And believe me, i've been guilty of it once or twice as well. Which is why i reinforce it now. -ToK |

You can't have that and a shield at the same time. 2) You can only move double your speed when you charge, so the only way to catch him would be to double move. 3) Since when does mage armor not stack with normal armor? I apologize for my mistakes.. the main one was forgetting that enlarge turned him into a large creature. If you want me to redo the part of the fight starting from when you caught up to him, I will. |
| Druid Roxors04-04-04, 04:33 PM | Originally posted by Captain Mutilate 1) your greatsword requires two hands to use, bub. You can't have that and a shield at the same time. True 2) You can only move double your speed when you charge, so the only way to catch him would be to double move. Double Move and Charge travel the same distance, why move when a charge is possible? 3) Since when does mage armor not stack with normal armor? It never has, Mage armor provides a +4 Armor bonus to AC, Just like normal Armor. Same bonuses do not stack. (check the stacking rules in the magic section on the SRD and types of bonuses of spell and armor) |
| Mustadio[MoF]04-04-04, 05:00 PM | 1. Bill was not with me. Im not sure if you have to specify that you start on/with your mount. I just assumed that they were with you unless specified otherwise. 2. I didn't use RapidShot.... |
| Captain Mutilate04-04-04, 06:31 PM | Roxors: I'm mostly a 3rd ed man... is the run option still available? That's what I had them do. |
| Anouilh Lyn04-04-04, 09:23 PM | Originally posted by Captain Mutilate 1) your greatsword requires two hands to use, bub. You can't have that and a shield at the same time. True, i do need a hand free to weild an actual shield. the shield spell however, creates a floating tower shield like force to block attacks for you (hence the +4 shield bonus). the way the spells worded, it makes sense that you need no hands to use it, it was designed for mages to use when having their hands full anyway. :p I apologize for my mistakes.. the main one was forgetting that enlarge turned him into a large creature. If you want me to redo the part of the fight starting from when you caught up to him, I will. maybe a redo would be appropriate, after the point when they first saw eachother anyway... since you didn't seem to know that you could run, nor did you know that charge and double move both equaled the same speed... or you could just work things as they went anyway, with everyone doing double moves, and just take into account reach. however... |
| Mercy04-05-04, 12:06 AM | Originally posted by Mustadio[MoF] 1. Bill was not with me. Im not sure if you have to specify that you start on/with your mount. I just assumed that they were with you unless specified otherwise. 2. I didn't use RapidShot.... I couldn't tell by your tactics if you wanted Bill or not so I left him out. In your tactics you specified to move to a rock for cover and then rapid shot, since rapid shot requires a full attack action I thought you wanted to be in cover before rapid shooting. By the time you could rapid shot, Kage had drunk a potion. Since Kage only had 3 potions and 2 of them were CLW potion, I judged that you suspected he had drunk the Protection from Arrows potion. |
| Tellish_of_Ket04-05-04, 06:17 AM | @Mustad: You do need to specify if you are bringing in any allies (mounts etc..) into the arena with you otherwise the pitlord is within the rights to exclude them without something REALLY obvious in your tactics like, "horse does full attack" etc.. -ToK |
| Captain Mutilate04-05-04, 11:53 AM | @ Anouilh: The move that provoked the AoO was a run, as was Tagg's move previous to yours. However, I don't think the outcome would be that different, because iwhen you moved there (out of his reach, therefore no AoO). So no 6 damage. I thought shield was only +2, so my bad. I'll redo the part from when you catch up to him. |

| Pittbull04-05-04, 07:23 PM | Originally posted by Arstimis @Cat: Are you sure you do damage during the trip attempt? Edit: and did you forget the Bats AoO in the 4th round? @ Arstimis: It's because of the improved trip feat which says: IMPROVED TRIP [GENERAL] Prerequisites: Int 13, Combat Expertise. Benefit: You do not provoke an attack of opportunity when you attempt to trip an opponent while you are unarmed. You also gain a +4 bonus on your Strength check to trip your opponent. If you trip an opponent in melee combat, you immediately get a melee attack against that opponent as if you hadn’t used your attack for the trip attempt. Normal: Without this feat, you provoke an attack of opportunity when you attempt to trip an opponent while you are unarmed. Special: At 6th level, a monk may select Improved Trip as a bonus feat, even if she does not have the prerequisites. A fighter may select Improved Trip as one of his fighter bonus feats. |

Granted, the shortsword didn't come into affect this fight, but can I change all my saves to +12 and ignore the red violation that would come from it? Secondly, could someone point me in the direction of additional information about riding dogs? In both combats so far, Shadow has not actual ridden the dog, which would have require a ride check. However, he doesn't have any ranks in Handle Animal. Teaching an animal the trick of "Attack" is a DC 20 Handle Animal check from my reading, and neither my MM or PHB reference riding dogs knowing this trick automatically. Additionally, using Handle Animal is a move equivlant action. I guess my point is, I'm not sure I understand using a riding dog and would like someone point me in the direction of information that makes this tactic possible. 150gp seems like a good investment for a second combatant that comes with scent and track. | Jindl04-06-04, 09:54 AM | @Limit - Though it is not the right thread for such questions, I'll try to answer anyway. 1. A red violation will normally prevent a character from being paired. However, if the violation wasn't posted more than 24 hours before pairings (to allow the player enough time to fix it), then the character will still be paired and the fixes will have to be emailed to both the Pitlord and the opponent. In Shadow's case, the violation was done a couple of hours before pairings (by me), and so I still paired him, and he was supposed to fix the violations by email / pm to both his opponent and his pitlord. The pitlord is responsible for making sure these violations are corrected prior to the fight in this manner. After the fight is posted, the player needs to edit these fixes into his character sheet. 2. Riding dogs know the combat riding purpose which includes the attack, defend, and some other tricks. So the dog knows attack and defend. To get it to use Attack, the character must make a DC 10 Handle Animal check (can be done untrained). Defend is automatic, and it basically triggers the Attack trick in response to the master being attacked. So, to have your dog attack your opponent before your opponent attacks you costs a move action and a successful Handle Animal (DC 10). To have your dog attack your opponent after your opponent attacks you is automatic. Clear? (This summarizes information in the handle animal skill description.) -Jindl |
