| Caterane09-07-05, 01:26 PM | This thread is for Comments and Concerns solely regarding this week's Battles of Gladius. If you want to participate in the Core Coliseum, read the Rules of Gladius (Fights of the Week, August 24, 2005. Comments and Concerns), or ask in the Tavern. Be nice, and have fun. Important Note: I'm going out on a concert tonight and won't be here at pairings time. Don't worry, Tellish of Ket is doing them in my stead. Please assist him a bit because he is doing LG pairings for the first time. See you tomorow, friends Yours, Cat |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-07-05, 01:38 PM | Yup. Be nice :D :D Now...whatever i say goes...and i don't wanna hear any arguments! Got IT!! haha Well, first time for LivGlad pairings, but many, many other times for COCO pairings when I was the GM. :p Anyhow, good luck to you all. -ToK |
| Mind Rogue09-07-05, 01:52 PM | Good luck easing back into the job, ToK; I hope things go smoothly. Don't get too comfortable though; I don't think Cat would like that. :D Oh, and there are about 3 hours and 7 minutes until ToK will begin doing the pairings (officially). However, if I were he, I'd start reviewing everything before that time. |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 01:58 PM | Good luck ToK! Have fun Cat! You know, I was just coming here to post "I wonder who will post this week's FOTW thread? And how early will they post it?" Guess it's Caterane, and it's WAY early. :D So who thinks they got what it takes to take on Minesbiggeranyers this week? Come on people, you're not /really/ scarred of a two-foot tall kobold... Are you? ;) EDIT: NEVERMIND. :D |
| TelinArtho09-07-05, 02:03 PM | Is the "Nevermind" because you retract your statement or because you realized that Mini is starting on campaign this week? Post your character in The Drums of War thread already... |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 02:08 PM | :D Yep, and just did. |
| Gonbow09-07-05, 02:14 PM | Well, the kobold may not be around; But Santos and Yasha are! So hide, lest you be sliced into flank steak or volunteer for quality control on Yasha's devices ^_^ Tatyana is around too, but she already commited to beating up this Orc dude ;) |
| TelinArtho09-07-05, 02:18 PM | I'll have someone to challenge Yasha in a week or two if you don't mind going up against an ECL 6 character - I'm just waiting for my credits... |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 02:18 PM | Hrm... The torturer or the butcher, I wonder who would win... |
| Gonbow09-07-05, 02:30 PM | ECL 6 eh? Well, two levels can be a significant advantage; But I'll wait till I see the character sheet, never say never ;) |
| Luni09-07-05, 02:32 PM | Have fun at your concert Cat! After this week, I'll 4 characters at ECL 5. :D |
| TelinArtho09-07-05, 02:33 PM | Well, Yasha should be ECL 5 (assuming 2 wins anyway) - so it would only be 1 level. Also, I'm not sure I'll be posting too quickly (might be using credits elsewhere first...), so it may be a few more weeks. Preview: Ogre spiked chain wielder... |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 02:40 PM | Ogre spiked chain wielder eh? Too bad Aeryn is so far down on the totem pole of ECL, or I'd want to fight ya. |
| sloisel09-07-05, 02:48 PM | Preview: Ogre spiked chain wielder... Hey, I was planning to do that. ;) Sébastien Loisel |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 02:56 PM | So why don't you? We'll see who ends up with the better gladiator. |
| sloisel09-07-05, 02:59 PM | So why don't you? We'll see who ends up with the better gladiator. I haven't done it yet for two reasons. First is 12º. Second is I want to fight a variety of opponents, and there aren't very many opponents at ECL6 right now... Sébastien Loisel |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 03:18 PM | Yeah? Telin is planning to do that. You were planning to do that too. Together, you can both continue to plan to do that. :D And I know what you mean about the 12 creds. That's quite a sum. |
| Maraxus09-07-05, 03:20 PM | Preview: Ogre spiked chain wielder... Wasn't there something ... http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=216 |
| waywreth09-07-05, 03:23 PM | Hmm... hopefully this week I can break that nasty consecutive losing streak that I seem to have going. |
| nightbanegod09-07-05, 03:28 PM | Yeah? Telin is planning to do that. You were planning to do that too. Together, you can both continue to plan to do that. :D And I know what you mean about the 12 creds. That's quite a sum. im planning on dropping 19°s to begin with on my ECL 7 character. then i will add another 16°s to template it later. MUHAHAHAHA and i think im looking at AC 31 at that ECL 7 so i think im doing fine |
| TelinArtho09-07-05, 03:36 PM | Well its not going to be his ONLY tactic Maraxus - he shouldn't need much more though. Ogre with spiked chain and combat reflexes - 20ft reach and a few AoO/round. Use Expansion - 30ft reach. Damage? 2d6+13 as a large chain, 3d6+14 as a huge chain... With a 30ft reach, I don't even care if someone goes into the center stack... By no means is he perfect - this is my first try with a non-standard race (well at least something that's not closely related to the starting races...). |

| Luni09-07-05, 03:38 PM | I got an ECL 10 character under construction. I figure I'll have 28° at about the same time we get a few gladiators up there. |
| Gonbow09-07-05, 03:45 PM | Well its not going to be his ONLY tactic Maraxus - he shouldn't need much more though. Ogre with spiked chain and combat reflexes - 20ft reach and a few AoO/round. By no means is he perfect - this is my first try with a non-standard race (well at least something that's not closely related to the starting races...). And by then Yasha will have a level of psychic warrior, acidic spiked chain anyone? ^_^ 6d6 + 11 > 3d6 + 14, even if you do get an AoO on me (Hmm. Boots of Tumbling, ooo) EDIT: If I pick up psionic weapon and a deep crystal spiked chain, I can get it has high as 10d6 +10. That's 16-70 damage coming your way. Not as impressive as the minotaur of course, but much easier to achieve at low levels, though the acidic weapon will likely be in expendable form. |
| King Uther09-07-05, 03:46 PM | As time progresses, there will be many opponents in all leagues, so save your power builds for later. Although you'll find you appreciate the characters you had to start from the beginning more. |
| King Uther09-07-05, 03:50 PM | Well, how about an Expansioned Diving Mounted Minotaur. With some spirited charge action(and max strength and no buffs), you would deal 18d6+36 with your gore, assuming you could find a suitable mount. Take a cohort who is a pegasus psychic warrior, and you can Psionic Lions Charge your way to massive damage. |
| Luni09-07-05, 03:55 PM | Well, how about an Expansioned Diving Mounted Minotaur. Take a cohort who is a pegasus psychic warrior, and you can Psionic Lions Charge your way to massive damage. And this is why, you stay in the central columns against Huge Opponents, so that they can't charge you. |
| NiQil09-07-05, 03:56 PM | And this is why, you stay in the central columns against Huge Opponents, so that they can't charge you. This is why you stay in the central columns agains *any opponents...so they can't charge you....at least not right away. |
| TelinArtho09-07-05, 03:59 PM | Frankly, that would be absolutely sick. Thankfully, I'm not planning on going that route. I have some plans for Chorr the Ogre - but we'll have to see how he'll do. Let's see - I've got 12 credits now, -5 for the campaign puts me at 7. I should gain 3 for fights this week and another 3 for the quest I'm running, but lose 2 for the quest Vakkor is on and I'll have 4 active characters, so that's another 2. I think I've got another credit coming from audits too - I should check that. That puts me squarely at 10. If I pick up another 2 fights this week, he could be in as early as next week? Not bad... |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 04:12 PM | I need to start pitlording more fights too. Since I've got Mini on campaign and will be fighting with Aeryn & Zamier, I'm only going to be gaining 1 credit a week. That's weak. ;) |
| nightbanegod09-07-05, 04:16 PM | One word... Twink! :D if you think thats bad... wait till you see the real thing in action!!! its gonna be brutal. for any type of opponent against me... for starters his mount will be HUGE size category with 12 natural attacks a round ... and thats just his mount |
| Snommelp09-07-05, 04:30 PM | if you think thats bad... wait till you see the real thing in action!!! its gonna be brutal. for any type of opponent against me... for starters his mount will be HUGE size category with 12 natural attacks a round ... and thats just his mount ...eep yeah, uh, can we try to keep my characters from facing that guy? That would be great... |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 04:33 PM | Yeesh. Like I said. :D Won't matter, by then Zamier will dominate that beastie into attacking you... |
| NiQil09-07-05, 04:37 PM | Yeesh. Like I said. :D Won't matter, by then Zamier will dominate that beastie into attacking you... Zamier couldn't dominate his way out of a paper bag :D |
| nightbanegod09-07-05, 04:42 PM | Yeesh. Like I said. Won't matter, by then Zamier will dominate that beastie into attacking you... Zamier couldn't dominate his way out of a paper bag :D yeah thats the whole catch to my plan... a killer full blown good cleric could RUIN my day |
| Pitlords09-07-05, 04:48 PM | 10 Minutes to go...everyone set???? -ToK |
| King Uther09-07-05, 04:52 PM | 10 minutes to challenge Balbanes. Any takers? |
| Mind Rogue09-07-05, 05:02 PM | Times up, everyone! Please put your pencils, pens, mice, or other recording device down, flip your character sheets over, and pass them to Tellish of Ket, who will begin the pairings presently. |
| Pitlords09-07-05, 05:03 PM | STOP EDITING! K, time is up. Pairings will be up within half an hour. -ToK |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 05:12 PM | Zamier couldn't dominate his way out of a paper bag :D Hehe. We'll see little medicine bottle, we'll see. By the way NiQil, wtf is up with your sig? Which four are your /active/ PCs? |
| NiQil09-07-05, 05:18 PM | Hehe. We'll see little medicine bottle, we'll see. By the way NiQil, wtf is up with your sig? Which four are your /active/ PCs? The bottom four...the others are just there so that if I need to get back to those characters for some reason, I don't have to hunt them down. It's part of an understanding I have with Cat. |
| Emrys Donovan09-07-05, 05:27 PM | So why don't you? We'll see who ends up with the better gladiator.Hehe, got two of them myself (Maximus and Duncan), though they're not ogres. ;) The bottom four...the others are just there so that if I need to get back to those characters for some reason, I don't have to hunt them down. It's part of an understanding I have with Cat.Lol, thats why you add them to your favorites list. :P |
| NiQil09-07-05, 05:29 PM | Hehe, got two of them myself (Maximus and Duncan), though they're not ogres. ;) Lol, thats why you add them to your favorites list. :P Not really able to do that from work, though. |
| nightbanegod09-07-05, 05:33 PM | Lol, thats why you add them to your favorites list. :P actually my favorites list is broken down into many folders.. each character i got has their own folder where i also add every fight/quest that character has been on... a seperate folder for all fights i run. and as of recently a seperate folder for any quest/miniquest i run. then lastly i got another folder for all of the general pages that i need to quickly link to. like active pitlords, pitlording rules, the pairings single post from the characters thread, the roster of characters single post, and of course the main page as well is it too late for me to challenge balbanes? |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 05:35 PM | NGB, I'm pretty sure that Uther's post of "10 minutes left to challange Balbanes" means you're outta time. |
| Sindorin09-07-05, 05:38 PM | STOP EDITING! K, time is up. Pairings will be up within half an hour. -ToK ToK, didn't you used to have Dark Red or something similar as your Pitlords color? gl with pairings. |
| NiQil09-07-05, 05:39 PM | STOP EDITING! K, time is up. Pairings will be up within half an hour. -ToK Methinks Tellish is now realizing that pairings are going to take a lot longer than he thought.... |
| nightbanegod09-07-05, 05:41 PM | Methinks Tellish is now realizing that pairings are going to take a lot longer than he thought.... heh ... by my clock, we have already been waiting for 38 minutes... i think |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 05:47 PM | Bah, quichyerbiching! ToK, I say you assign these nay-sayers to fight my two gladiators and they autolose! Whaddya think? Please? :D |
| Mind Rogue09-07-05, 05:50 PM | Methinks Tellish is now realizing that pairings are going to take a lot longer than he thought.... Or else he was trying to be a little ambitious. Perhaps this is a sign to get back to work on the fight roller program I had been working on. But then again, I now have schoolwork to do. |
| nightbanegod09-07-05, 05:50 PM | Bah, quichyerbiching! ToK, I say you assign these nay-sayers to fight my two gladiators and they autolose! Whaddya think? Please? :D HA... i would challenge BOTH of your characters...DOH pairings up *edit*WOOHOODalamar is moving up in the world... of all the 4th ECL characters .. only 5 have a higher power rating and i expect his to go up again this time around |
| NiQil09-07-05, 05:51 PM | Bah, quichyerbiching! ToK, I say you assign these nay-sayers to fight my two gladiators and they autolose! Whaddya think? Please? :D Is that the bonus feat that both Aeryn and Mini have? Auto-lose? :P |
| Ellorion Saenelle09-07-05, 05:51 PM | check the characters forum, he's got most of it up |
| Pitlords09-07-05, 05:53 PM | Methinks Tellish is now realizing that pairings are going to take a lot longer than he thought.... Nope...i was done around 5:30 I was just having problems (and still am) calculating credits adjustment. I posted the pairings cuz i'll still be at credit adjustment for a bit. -ToK |
| Altaris1309-07-05, 05:54 PM | Is that the bonus feat that both Aeryn and Mini have? Auto-lose? :P lol. Man, that's harsh. But hey, they've both won one of their fights. Of course, Zamier is well on his way to match that record. :D |
| nightbanegod09-07-05, 05:57 PM | lol. Man, that's harsh. But hey, they've both won one of their fights. Of course, Zamier is well on his way to match that record. :D QUICK while the horseman is still ECL 3... ill throw him up against ALL of your characters... and i think i got a more than decent chance of stomping them... however mini could get tricky with his mindthrust and i just took a look at dalamars challenge today... poor poor Yasha... will save OR DIE TRYING (can you activate a tattoo as an immediate action?) |
| NiQil09-07-05, 06:02 PM | Nope...i was done around 5:30 I was just having problems (and still am) calculating credits adjustment. I posted the pairings cuz i'll still be at credit adjustment for a bit. -ToK @Tellish/Cat/Pitlords/whoever sees this first There is a slight problem with the pairings. Madner has not accessed his account since 8-26-05....neither of his characters should be active. You might want to adjust the team battle that Nyatar is in with Vivi vs Gang Lion and Methos into an FFA or something..... |
| nightbanegod09-07-05, 06:06 PM | give her a pet monster to controll for the fight instead methinks... a cockatrice? or a Dretch would be more submissive, however Dalamar gets his kicks out of enslaving a lemure |

If Uther can set it up quickly (it shouldn't be hard), and it isn't too terribly late, would you mind changing Maximus to a mq and putting his opponent in the team fight? |
| Maraxus09-07-05, 06:45 PM | Hey, Zassl is bad in team fights (or any). Who should want that? ;) |

| Tellish_of_Ket09-07-05, 07:05 PM | Hey All, PHEW! K, i see you guys caught the same error i did. I fixed it already, no fear. Was just a little too quick on the draw. Have fun. -ToK |
| Gonbow09-07-05, 08:02 PM | So no credits for the TWO stories I wrote for Silas vrs Dark Lord of the Sith? =/ Even one would be cool, keep me even ;) @nightbanegod According to skip williams, I'd say so. Others say nay. I.E: The books/srd says activating a magic item is a standard action. Skip says: Standard, unless the spell would normally have a different casting time, in which case it's the different time. Except for potions and oils, which are always standard. The article where this is described is here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20041116a). Thus, according to skip, a wand of quickened magic missile can be activated as a free action (a very expensive one, mind), a dorje of hustle can be activated as an immediate action; and a tattoo of empty mind can be tapped as an immediate action. According to the Books/SRD, a wand of quickened magic missile is just a very expensive standard action to activate, a dorje of hustle is positively worthless as is a tattoo of empty mind, unless your expecting to have to break through some kind of area-affect mind-affecting spell/power (Wall of Ego Whip? Heh.) |

| Gonbow09-07-05, 08:05 PM | Wow. I'm so good, I get +3 credits, and then +1 Later on! Also, since Xanadu is handling two of my fights, shouldn't he get 2 credits? Santos Fi'Corma (Gonbow) vs Omo-Na Sento (LLMadCow): Xanadu Yasha Tankou (Gonbow) vs Dalamar Ohmsford (Nightbanegod): Xanadu |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-07-05, 08:05 PM | @Gonbow: Sorry man. I had now idea you wrote stories and were to be awarded them. I'll go change that. **EDIT@Gonbow: Nope. It's accurate. I just didn't include him in the list of pitlords. @Luni: +3 only. hehe Forgot to delete your name from the +1 level as i was adding them up. -ToK (damn, thought i was perfect first time back) |

(Net of -1, +2 from pitlording, +2 from questlording, -2 from questiong, -3 from characters) |

| Maraxus09-07-05, 10:58 PM | Arg, I had the perfect tactic against Maximus! I was sure I would win. And now - once again a team fight! And the opponent: Gang Lion who was tough for my main character Mythos 1800xp/gp ago and Methos - And Niqil is the master of Level 3 characters. ;) Well, my tactic against Maximus could work against this other evil Monk, too. But with the cleric... Maybe Doctor Funk has a trick ... What the abyss? Pairing two sorcerers 3 together? Fine, my tactic will include: Don't use expandables, we have already lost. :embarrass |
| Emrys Donovan09-07-05, 11:10 PM | ToK: I wasn't sure if I was still on with Uther, I was just postin g that to say you could do that if you heard from Uther. If you don't hear from him, and you have no other ECL 3 characters, pair Maximus up against an ECL 4 character (if you have an extra one). |

| Maraxus09-07-05, 11:30 PM | About monsters with equipment (or potions) once again: I usually don't want to fight traditions, but I looked in the DMG about this and there is the table, how to generate a monsters treasure. You don't spent it's NPC-equipment wealth, instead you look at the table page 52 and roll there. For example a CR 4 monster has 1d3 random mudane items on a percentil roll of 43-62 and 1 random minor magic item if the roll shows 63+. If the monster had class levels, this levels would give NPC wealth and this would not be randomly generated but choosen so that it works best. And all equipment shown in the monste entry is for free (an ogers club etc.) Just wanted to say this. If you now say: No, that would make those fights to easy, I'm fine, too. |

Yes, but there is also a chart there with their treasure in gold, that you could expect to find. The CR 4 dragon, in this case, is 1200gp. I spent it on the potions. The other stuff, (triple standard), i did roll and nothing useful came up. Other than the gauntlest. Just some scrolls, which it can't use, ring of featherfalling, and other crap. Since the PC can't "steal" it's treasure, i just left it all out of the equation. Hope that answers your question. -ToK |
| Sindorin09-07-05, 11:51 PM | @ TelinArtho Tactics have just been sent for Aranor. I'm not sure about Draconis' power stones of Energy Adaptation, they are listed at 150 gp apiece, but it is a 4th level power. They are probably Energy Adaptation (Specified), yet they have no specification... I'm not sure how that should be handled, but it is your call and if you would like to consider them Specified for purposes of this fight, I'm fine with that, but I'm not sure what type they should be specified against. |
| TelinArtho09-07-05, 11:53 PM | @Sin - tactics received - I'll take a look at the stones tomorrow. @Ellorian - tactics sent for Kraegin vs Juntar. |
| Ellorion Saenelle09-08-05, 12:10 AM | @Telin Tactics received |
| Gonbow09-08-05, 12:59 AM | @Michael Noah Tactics for Tatyana Sent. @Xanadu Tactics for Santos and Yasha will be sent early tomorrow. |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-08-05, 01:32 AM | Draco vs Daeren Stronghammer 2 Monster fights down... -ToK |
| King Uther09-08-05, 02:09 AM | @Luni Tactocs for Balbanes have been sent. Time for some killin, hopefully. |
| Vathelokai09-08-05, 02:29 AM | Tactocs for Balbanes have been sent. Time for some killin, hopefully. So why is the 'avatar of life' so into killing? |
| King Uther09-08-05, 02:32 AM | Well, technically he is cleansing your soul from the pull of death, trying to weaken the power of the Harvester. He also has a rich story that will be fleshed out later.... |
| Pauper09-08-05, 02:54 AM | Re: Ogre spiked-chain wielder. Dang. Maraxus beat me to the link. But I can still use the quote: "Ah, I thought I smelled cheese nearby." Though in a sense, this board is a cheese factory. :D More importantly... Thus, according to skip, a wand of quickened magic missile can be activated as a free action (a very expensive one, mind), Can you even make a wand of quickened magic missile as a core character, given that the spell would require a fifth level spell slot? (I'll concede that you can do so as a non-core character with a PrC that reduces the +level requirements of your metamagic feats, but none of the core PrCs allows this, as far as I can tell.) -- Pauper |

| Pauper09-08-05, 03:12 AM | But a Diadem of Quickened Magic Missiles is still possible >.> So the example still works ;) As would a rod or staff, for those of us without enough credits to go through the black market. :P (Edit: confused diadem with psicrown...) | KerlanRayne09-08-05, 04:01 AM | Lothan Laurel (Faroth) vs Goran the Beast (KerlanRayne): Usurpator @ToK: Are you sure about this? Goran is 5th Level now. It's cool with me however you want to do it. KerlanRayne |
| Pittbull09-08-05, 05:18 AM | @My gladiators: All tactics received, expect the fight to be up tomorrow. @ToK: Hagrid's tactic has been sent to you via E-Mail. |
| Delusional Illusion09-08-05, 08:26 AM | Tactics for Wlandra sent to Luni via email. |
| TelinArtho09-08-05, 08:44 AM | @Sin - I have looked over the powerstones you brought up on Xanadu's Draconis. It is clear to me that he intended Energy Adaptation, Specified. As stated in the power, you do not need to specify the energy type until the power is manifested. If he had a tatoo instead of a powerstone though, you would be correct. /d |
| Sindorin09-08-05, 08:49 AM | Yeah, I just found that out too :) It was the gnomes. |
| Altaris1309-08-05, 08:50 AM | Ya know, I never really checked ^_^ Probably not. But a Diadem of Quickened Magic Missiles is still possible >.> So the example still works ;) Actually, this came up in a TT I'm in very recently, so I did some research. As far as I could discover, it is not the spell SLOT required that determines if you can make a wand (or what have you) but the true spell LEVEL. Also, though I don't recall exactly where I saw it, but Metamagic/psionic feats supersede the standard activation rules. Example in question? Wand of Quickended Magic Missile: 5th level spell slot, so it requires a CL of 9, is only a cl 1 for over coming SR but still does 3d4+3 and is a free action. My group and I spent several hours going over the rules and debating this, and that is what we came up with. It is only CL1 vs SR because only Heighten Spell actually helps lower level spells when used in items (I believe that was in the FAQ.) However, since the caster has to be 9th level to have a 5th level slot, the wand does the extra dice of damage as normal. As for Quicken, a free action and placing such a high slot into a wand? That was addressed in the metamagic & item creation feat sections. Item Creation feats that limit spell level say just that "spell level." While Quicken (etc) require higher spell slots to attain the 'metamagic' affect, only the feat Heighten Spell actually changes the Spell Level itself. @Snom & NiQil: Tactics received: will run today |
| TelinArtho09-08-05, 09:02 AM | Regarding Daeren's fight. In round 2 - when my familiar saves, he takes no damage because of improved evasion. Even when he fails he takes half damage (in round 5). In round 3 - the dragon's bite did 2d6 damage - I believe a medium sized dragon does 1d8. Also after losing 7 points of strength - having started with 15+2=17-7=10. There should be no damage bonus. Also, with only a 10str, its attack bonus should be +9 and then +4 for all secondary attacks. In round 4 - the dragon rolled a 1! for its bite attack, yet you have it dealing 5 damage? Lastly, as much as I hate to admit it, in round 3 - I don't actually crit with an 18. Hopefully my crit in round 6 would still be enough - but I want to be thorough (and say that I killed a dragon!). Also, I realize that some of this might be resolved pretty easily if you had posted the full stats of the dragon - since you had to pick all of its feats and such... Thanks for running it. |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-08-05, 09:41 AM | Lothan Laurel (Faroth) vs Goran the Beast (KerlanRayne): Usurpator @ToK: Are you sure about this? Goran is 5th Level now. It's cool with me however you want to do it. KerlanRayne It seems like Cat forgot to move a few gladiators from level 4 to the level 5. I've encounterd this twice before and had to make adjustments. I'll quickly make the adjustment...brb. -ToK **EDIT Looks like Cat took over the Pitlords account already. Here's what i suggest though. Email the pitlords account and have Santos fight Lothan. and Goran fight Omo-Na. -ToK |
| Altaris1309-08-05, 10:13 AM | @Ellorion: tactics sent for Aeryn. @Gonbow: tactics sent for Zamier. |
| TelinArtho09-08-05, 11:12 AM | Draconis Regina vs Aranor Haerdonin (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7192231) This fight is messy... I've PMed Sindorin about further tactics - so this is not necessarily the end result. Honestly, after combing through both characters - I can't see any way that Aranor can continue... |
| Luni09-08-05, 12:05 PM | Tactics for Karisia, Shakari and Talari sent. Note: IS McJarvis even here anymore? He doesn't have an active gladiator, and he didn't run a fight last week. Also, I haven't seen any posts by him lately. |
| Sindorin09-08-05, 12:10 PM | I'll keep the surrender. Good fight. I didn't really have any way of breaking through Resist Energy. I need to remake Aranor and adjust things ever so slightly. ~Sindorin |
| TelinArtho09-08-05, 12:13 PM | Yeah - there was really nothing you could do - unless you wanted to try disarming him of his brooch of shielding - but of course that would require going in close... Thanks for accepting the surrender. I didn't really want to go through the 30 rounds of Aranor chasing Draconis only to start running away when his bolts ran out... |
| NiQil09-08-05, 12:13 PM | Tactics for Karisia, Shakari and Talari sent. Note: IS McJarvis even here anymore? He doesn't have an active gladiator, and he didn't run a fight last week. Also, I haven't seen any posts by him lately. His last activity here was earlier today... |
| Sindorin09-08-05, 12:15 PM | The damn 1/3 rule really screwed Aranor on that. Oh well, it is there for a reason... whatever. Blah blah blah  |
| TelinArtho09-08-05, 12:15 PM | @Pitlords - has the credits for this week's activities been credited/debited yet? The post says that it was modified earlier this morning, yet, for me anyway, still shows me at 12 credits. I should be somewhere around 8-9 I think (don't remember exactly - discussed it earlier in this thread). If its 12, I'll happily use them up - but I want to make sure first... |
| xanadu09-08-05, 12:27 PM | McJarvis sometimes goes away for s few days in a row I think. If need be, I'll take Ariel's ecl 5 fight, but lets give him a few days. TelinArtho, good job with the fight. Sindorin, what happened to Varia? She beat up on my druid and I thought she was your level 5 wizard? |
| Sindorin09-08-05, 12:33 PM | Heh, Virgo messed her up pretty bad and he also broke her heart. She also can't function under the 1/3 rule. The fight against your druid was her shining moment... |
| Gonbow09-08-05, 01:09 PM | In round 3 - the dragon's bite did 2d6 damage - I believe a medium sized dragon does 1d8. Dragons are Special. The bite as though they were one size larger in terms of damage AND reach. @Alac Tactics recieved. @Luni Tactics recieved. @Kaigan Tactics recieved. I can run one of my fights now, when I finish waking up I'll figure out which one and start it up. ^_^ EDIT: Can someone PM me the stats for a displacer beast? It's one of those few things NOT in the SRD =/ |
| waywreth09-08-05, 01:20 PM | Mrs. Buttmunch (Sloisel) & Jodan Desho (Vathelokai) vs Amion Dar'ath (Waywreth) & Rakkar the Reckless (Xanadu): Nightbanegod Tactics for Amion sent to Nightbanegod after conferring with my partner. I'd complain about getting stuck with a commoner as my partner... but he has a better record than I do, so I'll keep my mouth shut. Going against team Giant should prove interesting. |
| Luni09-08-05, 01:36 PM | Hey, Talari and Rakkar won a team battle. Rakkar is an exceptional commoner. |
| Caterane09-08-05, 01:40 PM | @Pitlords - has the credits for this week's activities been credited/debited yet? I should be somewhere around 8-9 I think (don't remember exactly - discussed it earlier in this thread). If its 12, I'll happily use them up - but I want to make sure first... Ray, did you update the credits? |
| TelinArtho09-08-05, 01:41 PM | Dragons are Special. The bite as though they were one size larger in terms of damage AND reach. Hence the 1d8 damage - a regular medium sized bite would be 1d6. The value I grabbed was from the entry on the dragon itself. Now, if ToK had given it Improved Natural attack - that would be one thing - but normally it would just be 1d8. |
| Altaris1309-08-05, 01:48 PM | here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7193387&postcount=350) Please read & review. It was fun to pitlord this one, very interesting. :D My format is different than what I've used before, I followed Telin's format this time. You'll notice some extraneous damage rolls on InvisCastle. I did that to keep damage & attack rolls together in case I screwed up any attack or AC modifiers. |
| TelinArtho09-08-05, 01:51 PM | Didn't realize I had a format... well I guess I'm flattered then... |

And congratulations to my opponent for coming so very close... if it weren't for the Diehard feat, I would have been scared at the end there. I guess we proved Spaceballs wrong... good triumphed over evil, despite good being dumb. One trivial thing: Round nine, Silas' grapple check should be 24, not 22. Still gets beaten by Sam's 29, though. |

| NiQil09-08-05, 02:30 PM | True, you had me at 1 hp for a long time. You still would have had to hit me for 11 to finish me off, though. Diehard. Well, with psychic strike charged, I do a minimum of 4 points of damage....average die rolls on both damage and the psychic strike would put me at 10 points of damage....so definitely feasible if I could have friggin struck you just once. |
| Usurpator09-08-05, 03:20 PM | Here's what i suggest though. Email the pitlords account and have Santos fight Lothan. and Goran fight Omo-Na. @ToK: What is the status of the Lothan(ECL4) vs. Goran (ECL5) fight? Is it going through, or is the switch with Santos and Omo-na effected? @Faroth: I have your tactics for Lothan vs. Goran, don't know yet if the fighting is going to be switched yet, i'll PM you if you have to resend tactics if you're paired against Santos. |
| NiQil09-08-05, 03:32 PM | @ Caterane Tactics for Methos & Gang Lion sent via PM. |
| Pauper09-08-05, 04:18 PM | Example in question? Wand of Quickended Magic Missile: 5th level spell slot, so it requires a CL of 9, is only a cl 1 for over coming SR but still does 3d4+3 and is a free action. Nope, can't do it. Check out your PH: Magic Items and Metamagic Spells: With the right item creation feat, you can store a metamagic version of a spell in a scroll, potion, or wand. Level limits for potions and wands apply to the spell's higher level (after the application of the metamagic feat). If you had a PrC that reduced the +level requirement of your metamagic feats by one, you could create a wand of quickened magic missile with a fourth level spell slot; you'd have to create it at a minimum caster level of 7 (as a wizard; 8 as a sorcerer), since that's the lowest level at which you could cast that spell. Whatever caster level you made the wand at, though, it would be at that caster level for all purposes. It would still be a first level spell for purposes of calculating save DC (not applicable for magic missile), whether it can penetrate a lesser globe of invulnerability, etc., since as you note, only Heighten Spell actually changes the level of the spell so modified. It may not seem entirely fair, but the rule of thumb for all metamagic feats and item crafting (except Heighten Spell) works out to be, 'whenever using the higher spell level would be advantageous to you, use the lower spell level; whenever the lower spell level would be advantageous, use the higher level'. Much of this is irrelevant to the CoCo, as I don't know of any core PrCs that give a +level reduction to metamagic feats. As for Quicken, a free action and placing such a high slot into a wand? That was addressed in the metamagic & item creation feat sections. Item Creation feats that limit spell level say just that "spell level." Except for that other pesky little rule. :) The rule also suggests but does not explicitly state that you can't put metamagicked spells into rods, staves, or wondrous items. Since we know that potions are always standard actions to use regardless of the casting time of the spell they contain, quickening a potion is pointless, even if you could. Quickening scrolls, though? Might not be a bad reason to play a wizard, given that you get Scribe Scroll for free and can take Quicken spell as a 10th level bonus feat. (You could take it at 5th level, but with the +4 spell level bump, there's not much point.) -- Pauper |
| Altaris1309-08-05, 04:42 PM | Wow Pauper. I totally and completely missed that, and my fellow TT gamers did too. I guess I should turn in my 3 Wands of Quickened MM to my Ravenloft DM. Nah... :D |
| sloisel09-08-05, 04:56 PM | @Caterane: Tactics for Methos & Gang Lion sent by NiQil. @Nightbanegod: Tactics for Mrs. Buttmunch and Jodan Desho sent by email. @ToK: that's two 2v2 for me in a week man! One is enough! |

| nightbanegod09-08-05, 06:51 PM | alright ive got tactics for all the fights im running... im going to start with the 1vs1 for starters just because i think im going to have complaints about the 2vs2 just based on how the tactics sound..... |

If the tactics are that bad, you should probably be PMing people back for clarification. If they're not badly written, but things are going to get screwy, then really people can't complain if you follow the tactics written. If it comes down to common sense vs. tactics, play the character's mental scores. |

Well, Cat took over the Pitlords account the very next morning, so as i posted, i wasn't able to make the adjustment. The parties involved will/should PM the Pitlords account asap for a solution to this dilema. I believe my suggestion is the most logical one instead of adding more monster fights. Omo-Na vs Goran, and have Lothan fight <the other guy>. But Cat has Pitlords back. So PM him asap on that matter. @Sloisel: Sorry man. I don't decide your fate...dice do. :D -ToK |
| Altaris1309-08-05, 08:52 PM | Shaken, not stunned: got your tactics. Huan, none received. But hey! I just discovered I'll have my computer this weekend, so no worries. SnS, if you want to revise anything after further thought, feel free to do so. |
| Begferdeth09-08-05, 09:29 PM | @Luni: Tactics for Chili are in. My first cleric fight! Im sure Im missing some important stragety for beating them, but oh well. Its a learning experience. |

| Kaigan09-08-05, 10:13 PM | Nexa vs Coralias is up. I won't say who won, but it was settled by a lucky critical that dealt more damage than the opponent has total hp. Why didn't I drink potion of invisibility like I stated in my tactics after I killed the wolf? Edit: Damnit, i see now, because I wasn't clear enough in my tactics. I accept the defeat on my stupidity. |
| Mind Rogue09-08-05, 10:30 PM | I can edit it back in if you like, but the only chance you have to drink it is after he's closed in on you, so you'd probably fail the concentration check from being hit since you have no ranks in the skill. |
| Kaigan09-08-05, 10:34 PM | why's that, 5ft step back, draw and drink potino of invis? no attack of opp. no concentration check needed, but i'd only edit the fight if you think it is fair. It is my fault that i wasn't clear enough. |
| Faroth09-08-05, 10:52 PM | Oh! I didn't realize the fact that my opponent is level 5 :weep: I don't know what to do with Lothan's fight, if there isn't a solution... I'll fight the Orc  |

| TelinArtho09-09-05, 09:54 AM | So any word on whether the credits that are listed in the characters thread is up to date? I see it has been updated since I last commented on it... I'm only asking because I have an ECL6 character I'm just about ready to bring in and I want to make sure I have the right credits. |
| michael_noah09-09-05, 10:01 AM | Tatyana and the amazing death missile vs. Grik is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7200845&postcount=354). Let me know if anyone has issues with my slight adaptation based on the circumstances. |
| Mind Rogue09-09-05, 10:08 AM | why's that, 5ft step back, draw and drink potino of invis? no attack of opp. no concentration check needed, but i'd only edit the fight if you think it is fair. It is my fault that i wasn't clear enough. In order to prevent from giving the mutt cover against your bow, you stepped back against the wall rather than around the corner. When Nexa rushes up next to you, the only way that you can 5ft step is right into another square she controls because of the walls in the very center of the map. |
| Pittbull09-09-05, 10:50 AM | @NiQil/Mindrogue: Sorry guys I promised to post the fight today and I had finished it allready, but just before posting it I recognized a major mistake, I'll do a rerun from the point of the mistake with new rolls, but so I won't be able to post today. I'll wait until Gonbow sees it, because I just can't believe that it would run so smoothly for me. As far as your modifying Grik's tactics, I'd say it was justified. Even a character with no mental score higher than 7 will realize that he can't hit something that's floating in the air with his melee weapons. I wasn't expecting levitate, but flying enemies are the entire reason that Grik has a bow, so from my POV, you played things the only way they could have (and should have) been played. Once again, though, I'll wait to see what Gonbow has to say. |

| Gonbow09-09-05, 12:34 PM | Note to self: Don't stand in the front of the arena against melee characters EVER again. God DAMN you are a lucky punk :P Though I must say, this should put to rest any doubts about her Uberness at the moment ;) A lucky opponent can finish me off before I do do anything (How hard is it for a archer/fighter type to deal 12 damage if they win initiative? ;)) In the end it comes down to lucky rolls. Cant really argue with that. |

| Snommelp09-09-05, 12:39 PM | Gonbow agrees, it's official! Grik has won, thanks to the power of his longbow, which will now be called Luk Bo. What? Grik's got a negative intelligence modifier, for him this is pure genius! |

| Gonbow09-09-05, 12:57 PM | Grik and his Luk Bo will meet their match soon enough. @michael_noah Would you mind adding the 57 gp Tatyana gets from being a spy on the side? Thanks ;) |
| michael_noah09-09-05, 12:59 PM | i always forget the professions! I'll add it right now. |

| NiQil09-09-05, 01:15 PM | Fight a dwarf who gets an inherent bonus against my orc? Sounds like fun! It's only one credit for a challenge, you know... True....unless you don't have any credits, and then its 2 to have it go down. My problem is that I'm barely scraping enough credits together to keep my 4 characters active together, so coming up with an extra credit is tough. I've thought about pitlording to try and solve this problem...I'm just so poor with most rules that I am leary that I will just end up ticking people off LOL. Maybe we'll give them another couple of weeks under their belt (since Caspian will most likely spend next week crafting...should have enough to make that adamantine chain shirt after his fight this week is posted). |
| Ellorion Saenelle09-09-05, 01:20 PM | I'm just so poor with most rules that I am leary that I will just end up ticking people off LOL. But that's half the fun of running the arena fights. |
| NiQil09-09-05, 01:29 PM | But that's half the fun of running the arena fights. Heh...touche. I guess, since I have never DM'd before, I am not real confident in my abilities to run an arena match. Maybe I'll give it a go and see what happens. |
| TelinArtho09-09-05, 01:33 PM | In all honesty, take on one fight a week and see how it goes (assuming you have the time to put into it). If you have any rules questions, PM them to another pitlord who doesn't have a character in the fight (for an impartial opinion) and just go from there. I pitlorded my first few fights without having read really any of the changes from 3.0 to 3.5. It takes some getting used to, but just look up everything as you go and you should be okay. |

| NiQil09-09-05, 02:10 PM | Alexi vs Caspian is here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7202560&postcount=355)! Nothing immediately jumps out at me as wonky...I'll defer to my opponent as I am probably not as familiar with trip rules as Mind Rogue is. You may have already added this in, but since the modifiers for Caspian's trip aren't broken down, I wasn't sure if the bonus that dwarves get for Stability as a racial addition were added in or not....not fight-affecting, but thought I would mention it. |
| Ellorion Saenelle09-09-05, 02:39 PM | Aeryn vs Shazzelin is up (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7198098&postcount=353) |
| TelinArtho09-09-05, 02:57 PM | @Ellorion - just some general things that I see: 1. When a person is invisible, the opponent can spot him when the opponent is within 30ft (the opponent gets a +20 to their hide). So the entire time that the Gray is moving to the center - no spot checks are possible for Aeryn. 2. On the other hand, Aeryn is about 10-15+ feet away from any source of cover. Once the Gray has moved out of his starting area - he would see Aeryn without difficulty. No spot check needed. 3. When the Gray is "sniping" - he would probably be using cover to break line of sight. Without doing so, he can't rehide (because he is being observed). The way you have it written, with Gray not breaking LOS - Aeryn wouldn't have to respot - he already knows where Gray is and can see him. |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-09-05, 03:30 PM | Goth the Gauth vs Brilf All i can see is sometimes, the obvious isn't so obvious. LOL. <coughgrapplecough>, <coughgrapplecough>. -ToK |
| Usurpator09-09-05, 03:54 PM | Aeryn vs Shazzelin is up (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7198098&postcount=353) Ellorion, thank you for Pitlording this difficult fight (at least, I am assuming it is difficult with all the spotting and listening going on). A few questions though: In round 8 Shazzelin already knows where Aeryn is (as TelinArtho pointed out) and I believe he can make the shot from the benefit of cover in 2,-2; he doesn't have to step 5 ft. out to make the shot. What happened exactly in round 9, because I see Aeryn making two reactive listen & spot rolls. I think you can get only one in the opponents turn? EDIT: almost forgot, you know that Aeryn gets a -1 penalty to Spot and Listen checks for each 10 ft. of distance between her and Shazzelin? This means -9 on all her checks from that 2,-2 spot. I think Aeryn is still spotting at +3 instead of -6. I think a lot of my buffs should end sooner, most are ML 1, chameleon lasts 10 minutes, though. It is my first sniper, and I am not totally familiar with sniping tactics and the intricacies of cover etc., so I am just experimenting with tactics. I agree with the observations by TelinArtho, though. |
| Maraxus09-09-05, 03:56 PM | Tactics for Zassl and Vivi send. I had hoped for some more ideas from Dr. Funk but I think this will work. |
| xanadu09-09-05, 04:10 PM | tactics needed for: Dalamar Ohmsford (Nightbanegod) Omo-Na (LLMadCow) Goran the Beast (KerlanRayne) |
| Altaris1309-09-05, 04:21 PM | Usurpator: Aeryn is a GUY! ;) Ellorian: Also, you need to move my second attack down one round in each stack. A readied action takes place of your normal action in the round, so I don't get to make two attacks in round 6. |
| Usurpator09-09-05, 04:36 PM | Usurpator: Aeryn is a GUY! ;) Whoops! I am sorry about that. :embarrass Aeryn just sounded so female to me that I didn't even bother to check her sex. And when I read his description (the 'slender' bit) it only confirmed my perception. :) Sorry about the sniping tactics, our last fight was more exciting. Maybe one of your characters will meet Nexa someday for a good fight (she just levelled after her third combat here :cheer: ) |
| Mind Rogue09-09-05, 04:43 PM | Alexi vs Caspian is here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7202560&postcount=355)! My only comment is that even though he doesn't have a shield, Caspian is using his axe one-handed (I am guessing so that he can keep his bow up), which shaves a few damage off for Alexi, giving him probably one more round left. Aside from that, I've got to pay closer attention to my opponent's race. That's the second week in a row that I've tried to trip a dwarf. |
| NiQil09-09-05, 04:59 PM | My only comment is that even though he doesn't have a shield, Caspian is using his axe one-handed (I am guessing so that he can keep his bow up), which shaves a few damage off for Alexi, giving him probably one more round left. Aside from that, I've got to pay closer attention to my opponent's race. That's the second week in a row that I've tried to trip a dwarf. Actually, no....nothing in the other hand. The weapon is listed one-handed on my sheet so that there is a base to work with. It can be wielded one handed if something is in the other hand, or two-handed if not. Since I did drop the bow, my other hand would be free. While I did not specify which way to wield it in my tactics, it is reasonable to assume this would be done. However, *because I did not specify this one way or the other in my tactics, if you would like the battle changed to reflect it being wielded one-handed (and the damage adjusted accordingly), I have no problem with that whatsoever, since the way it was wielded was the pitlords prerogative, not something I specified. |
| Mind Rogue09-09-05, 05:06 PM | Well, I guess your tactics do say to drop the bow (must have glazed over that before) so it would make sense for you to attack two-handed. The extra round isn't likely to do me any good either: I'll probably just drink a potion and you'll chop it all off in one blow anyway, just making the fight more expensive for me. Oh well. Level up is still level up, but I've got to stop trying to trip those stupid dwarves, although the way those opposed rolls were going, disarm wasn't going to work either. |

Maybe one of your characters will meet Nexa someday for a good fight (she just levelled after her third combat here :cheer: ) Congrats on Nexa, Aeryn leveled up too. My 1 in 5 Arena record is just so awesome! And don't worry, you're not the first person to refer to Aeryn as a 'her.' I never even considered that the name was 'feminine' in spelling. |
| Mind Rogue09-09-05, 05:22 PM | @ Iced I still need tactics for Griff. I think I essentially have to run the fight tommorrow in order to get a big enough block of time to be sure that I can do it all in one go, so I suggest you send me your tactics since I would hate to have to extrapolate some for you. Wow. That was one nice run-on. |
| Emrys Donovan09-09-05, 05:59 PM | @ Maraxus: Tactics for Nico sent. |
| TheMagister09-09-05, 06:34 PM | @ Dr. Funk and Kaigan: Tactics received! Fight will be run tonight, probably late in the evening. Good luck to both! TM |

| Vathelokai09-10-05, 06:57 AM | Hey magister, your links bad. |
| Pittbull09-10-05, 07:12 AM | Umberhulk vs Hagrid My last fight is up. -ToK @ToK: Isn't the an Umberhulk CR7 and therefor an ECL7 challange? That means, Hagrid should get 2100XP and 2600gp, not 1800XP and 2000gp, please fix this. Thank you! |
| Dr. Funk09-10-05, 09:40 AM | @TheMagister If you notice I did not say to use my sleep arrows in the fight (because my opponent is a wood elf and is immune to sleep. Also, you didn't include a summary at the end of the fight of what expendables were used and you didn't include the money for profession that I made (60gp). |
| LLMadCow09-10-05, 10:38 AM | Omo-Na (LLMadCow) vs Goran the Beast (KerlanRayne): Xanadu Hey everbody. I just discovered this change had occurred. That was after I sent tactics out for the initial fight. So, it is going to take me some time to get it all sorted out, but I will have tactics sent out tonight, perhaps this morning if I have the time. Sorry.... LLMC |
| Gonbow09-10-05, 12:55 PM | @Usuraptor Tactics for Santos sent. @Xanadu Thanks for the fight. Your minor alteration to my tactics at the end is acceptable and logical. You might want to note in round 4 and 9 that he was casting those spells from a scroll; I was puzzled why his spell indicator wasn't changing till I ready the fight summary. Would you mind adding 80 gp to Yasha's award, as per her crafting skill? Also... what is (21.875% ally penalty included) ? Neither Yasha nor Dalamar have any allies. (Familiars don't cause experience penalties) A hold-over from a fight template you used perhaps? Great job pitlording :) @Players in my battles I'll have Zamier(Altaris13) vs Eiletha Surion (Kaigan) up later today. Karisia (Luni) vs Alac Rensellaer (Pauper) should be up sometime tomorrow. |
| xanadu09-10-05, 01:11 PM | The ally penalty was there from the last fight I did, oops :embarrass. Profession money added in for both gladiators. |
| Altaris1309-10-05, 01:19 PM | I'll have Zamier(Altaris13) vs Eiletha Surion (Kaigan) up later today. Woot! Good luck Kaigan. |
| Luni09-10-05, 01:23 PM | Balbanes vs Yoriko is up. Visit it here. (http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7210932&postcount=360) Short Summary: Yoriko starts with incredible luck, but then loses the luck to Balbanes. |
| Mind Rogue09-10-05, 02:12 PM | I just have two comments on the fight: 1.) Why did Yoriko charge in instead of tumbling to avoid the glaive or throwing another javelin? Being that I'm large at this point, I can still move at half speed and come into melee with Balbanes in one move action. This would have bought another round to grapple because his AoO would have been pushed back a round or two. 2.) Why did Yoriko drink a CLW instead of a CMW potion? The extra healing would have enabled her to survive the MM. |
| Luni09-10-05, 02:25 PM | I just have two comments on the fight: 1.) Why did Yoriko charge in instead of tumbling to avoid the glaive or throwing another javelin? Being that I'm large at this point, I can still move at half speed and come into melee with Balbanes in one move action. This would have bought another round to grapple because his AoO would have been pushed back a round or two. My initial thought is to simply charge in. Nowhere in your tactics, did you say tumble and attack. As for the javelin toss, hmm. I assumed you wanted to grapple Balbanes, though on second thought, I see you wanted to toss javelins at Balbanes til he closes. 2.) Why did Yoriko drink a CLW instead of a CMW potion? The extra healing would have enabled her to survive the MM. You said CLW in your tactics. 5.) If dropped to fewer than 15 hp and not in grapple, step back to drink the potion of cure light wounds if at glaive range. If it is a choice between the glaive or the hoof, take the hoof, since I still have to draw the potion. If I'm in grapple when this happens, just tough it out. I'll make some changes later tonight. I want to see what King Uther says about the fight first. |
| Maraxus09-10-05, 03:31 PM | Victoria "Nico" Nicodemeus vs. Anya Starfire Finally a quick fight. After the last always took 6 ours or something, this is good. :) |
| Mind Rogue09-10-05, 03:35 PM | I didn't say to tumble and attack because my plan was to wait for him to come to me. Generally, if someone has tumble, they probably want to use it for their protection. I can't believe a put the 'light' in there. Bad typos... |
| Emrys Donovan09-10-05, 04:07 PM | Emrys: This tactic would have worked good for a stealthy character with high perception-skills. Also, while buffing from the start has the problem, that the buffs run out earlier, it has the advantage that they are all up when you see your opponent. :) A ML3 Vigor would have saved you.First, isn't full speed considered to be base speed? I thought it was, but if it wasn't that's fine. Also, you never did spot checks for Nico. I specifically said spot and listen for her opponent. |
| nightbanegod09-10-05, 04:14 PM | i have a dispute with the Dalamar fight... for starters... in round 6, theres nothing that says i cannot concentrate on the summon swarm spell if its past short range... thats just the farthest range i can place them when summoning. as well as even with the skate tattoo, my base land speed is faster than hers so if she only took a move action away since she apparently is just hiding behind a rock and readying to flee on spell casting then with expeditious retreat im faster than her per move action... i would have simply summoned the swarm closest to her (which by the way is more than the 20' feet blind sense by the way) and since im invisible they would go after the first person they could see, Yasha. in round 8 i use my familiar in a suicide run? are you SERIOUS!?!?!?!? ... it explicitly states in my tactics to have the familiiar get far away... and regardless of tactics, A wizard period values his familiar enough to not "send him on a suicidie run" good god man ... in round 13 my previous points notwithstanding. im 10 feet away from a "Large" fighter getting ready to cast a spell that can conceivably cover 4 consecutive 5' squares with NON friendly critters that would hurt me something bad... and WHY didnt i move to a minimum safe distance before casting? please note this PARTICULAR segment of my tactics have familiar get FAR away and cast summon swarm right next to him, i will concentrate and move away each round, if i have to stop concentrating the swarm will last for another 2 rounds regardless. in which, A, if i put the swarm right "next to him" in the attempt to stay invisible, i would almost certainly be placing a swarm of bats on my own head, NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. B, whats the miscommunication about... "have familiar get FAR away", C, moving away each round at 60 ft base land speed would put me very far away and still be able to concentrate... do you see the problem i have with this then? |

I specifically said spot and listen for her opponent. Speed: This looks quite confusing, in the rules, at the one place it sais between half movement and full movement, somewhere else between full and double. I see it like that: Moving at full speed moves you your movement rate once per move action. So when you take a double move: Full speed: double movement Half speed: normal movement. At only one move: Full speed: normal movement Half speed: half movement. Spot checks: I don't make spot checks, when there is no LOS. When there was LOS, you got your spot check (even twice, because there was nothing better to do with the move-action). |
| Mind Rogue09-10-05, 05:14 PM | Talari vs Griff is up. It's my first fifth level fight, so I still need to look up the rewards to make sure nothing funny has happened yet, but I think I'll put them in after dinner. It's saturday, so the dining hall should have mini-pizzas. :cookie: Oh, Maraxus, I love the commentary. I might have to put "the pretty one" or something like that in Anya's sheet now. |
| nightbanegod09-10-05, 05:26 PM | just a thought but i think we should requre inteligence checks whenver someone states they want to stay x feet away from someone... because how often in RL do you walk around saying, well im currently 70' from that telephone pole and 35' from that car... id be impressed if anyone could eyeball 75 feet of distance from ... 75' away but again. there goes logic in DnD |
| Emrys Donovan09-10-05, 05:31 PM | Speed: This looks quite confusing, in the rules, at the one place it sais between half movement and full movement, somewhere else between full and double. B, whats the miscommunication about... "have familiar get FAR away", C, moving away each round at 60 ft base land speed would put me very far away and still be able to concentrate... do you see the problem i have with this then? As far the swarm goes... Yasha is moving 55 feet every turn, and readying to move another 55 feet away as soon as you start casting. Short range is what, 25 +5/2 levels? So you can put it up to 35 feet away from you. I.E: It will always be closer to you than it is to me. Especially as after my readied action triggers, I get a whole nother round of actions before the swarm goes off! I.E: Yasha can run 220 more feet away before you finish casting the swarm. So assuming you manage to get within 35' of me and start casting it with yasha ground zero, the distance between her and the swarm by the time your done is 275 feet. (In a perfect world. With the barriers and such it would still be considerably less). The distance between you and the swarm is 35' feet. If Yasha can get out of LOS of the swarm before it appears (Not very hard with all the barriers), guess who they make listen/spot checks to see and go after? Be glad this did NOT happen ;) Granted, the familiar suicide charge was pretty f'n odd. But it worked, and didn't disadvantage you in the end, so no biggie. Like he said, just straight up using laughter on me, THEN using swarm/various summonables would have worked much better. |
| Usurpator09-10-05, 05:36 PM | just a thought but i think we should requre inteligence checks whenver someone states they want to stay x feet away from someone... because how often in RL do you walk around saying, well im currently 70' from that telephone pole and 35' from that car... id be impressed if anyone could eyeball 75 feet of distance from ... 75' away but again. there goes logic in DnD True, but usually you want to stay away a meaningful distance, say out of charge range. It can be easier for pitlords just to say the exact distance in some cases. If you have ever played tag, you know at roughly what distance you can't react fast enough to get away if someone suddenly runs at you, even if you have better speed. If we translate this to the DnD artifact of sequential turns you end up with: I want to stay at least 30 ft. away from my opponent. |
| Emrys Donovan09-10-05, 05:38 PM | Oh, Maraxus, I love the commentary. I might have to put "the pretty one" or something like that in Anya's sheet now.Heh, I'm gonna want a rematch, so I wouldn't put it there just yet |
| TelinArtho09-10-05, 06:00 PM | The First Horseman vs Maeril (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7212790) I again am going to apologize to Usurpator for being a little short in my PM to him. Regardless of how much I disagree with his tactic - and how much it guaranteed him losing - there's really no excuse for it. Also, he did point out to me that waking someone up is a standard action - but I still gave him a ready action for it. If I go back to revise the fight - obviously this would come out. For now - it seems the most reasonable way to approach the situation. /d |
| Mind Rogue09-10-05, 06:22 PM | Heh, I'm gonna want a rematch, so I wouldn't put it there just yet I think you're probably going to have some trouble convincing Maraxus to rerun the fight. Saying you wanted to draw the potion and move 30' on the first turn probably isn't going to fly since he started you with the potion in hand and giving you two move actions on the first turn to put you closer to the center which looked to be your intention. As for the movement speeds, full speed is 30 ft per move action (for you anyway) which means that if you do nothing else, you can move 60 ft. If you're worried about making noise, you can move at half speed, which is 15 ft per move action, meaning if you do nothing but sneak, you can cover 30 ft per round. If you really want to get someplace fast, you denote that you want to run there and you can move at 4x speed as a full round action, which is 120 ft, but you're virtually asured to fail your opposed move silently check. But if what you really mean is that you want to have another pretty girl pagent after this one, I'll have to think long and hard (for about one second) before agreeing to accept the challenge, but you've got to supply your own credit. On a side note, Talari and Griff's rewards are up. |
| Usurpator09-10-05, 06:34 PM | I again am going to apologize to Usurpator for being a little short in my PM to him. Regardless of how much I disagree with his tactic - and how much it guaranteed him losing - there's really no excuse for it. No probs about your PM, I did not feel offended in any way, no apologies necessary. My tactics depended on the honor of my opponent. Since we already made a gentlemans agreement before the fight to leave our mounts at home, Maeril counted on The First Horseman to recognize his obvious defeat after he was put to sleep, and be grateful to Maeril saving him the additional pain of dying to a CDG (and a detect evil revealed that the FH was not evil). I was well aware that Maeril didn't stand much of a chance against him while grappling when I wrote up the tactic. It was just a little role-playing element mixed into the fight. A part of his paladin code is 'do not inflict undue suffering' after all. Also, he did point out to me that waking someone up is a standard action - but I still gave him a ready action for it. If I go back to revise the fight - obviously this would come out. For now - it seems the most reasonable way to approach the situation. I'd rather have Maeril move 10 ft. or more back with my remaining move action after waking up the giant. That way he cannot grapple me on his turn, and we can negotiate surrender from that distance quite well. However, I did not specify any surrender contingencies, so I can hardly demand that you should have done so. @Nightbanegod You realize that Maeril now has a feud with The First Horseman! :fight!: The dishonorable fiend! As it stands now Maeril may not have reaped the rewards of the victory, but he knows that victory was his, and The First Horseman must realize that too. |
| Gonbow09-10-05, 07:02 PM | Elitha vrs Zamier is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7213358&postcount=364). I'm going to set up my other fight tonight and finish running it something tomorrow. |
| xanadu09-10-05, 07:08 PM | in round 6, theres nothing that says i cannot concentrate on the summon swarm spell if its past short range... thats just the farthest range i can place them when summoning. as well as even with the skate tattoo, my base land speed is faster than hers so if she only took a move action away since she apparently is just hiding behind a rock and readying to flee on spell casting then with expeditious retreat im faster than her per move action... i would have simply summoned the swarm closest to her (which by the way is more than the 20' feet blind sense by the way) and since im invisible they would go after the first person they could see, Yasha. Note PHB 176 under concentration. If the target moves out of range, the spell reacts as if the concentration is broken. Thus, you must be within the range of the bats at all times. As you are closer and they have blindsense, they will go after you, not Yasha. Yasha is like 150 feet away from you (start 30 feet, ready move another 55, initiative resets, she double moves, another 100 feet). i use my familiar in a suicide run? are you SERIOUS!?!?!?!? ... it explicitly states in my tactics to have the familiiar get far away... and regardless of tactics, A wizard period values his familiar enough to not "send him on a suicidie run" good god man ... As you gave me no contingency tactics if the summons didn't work, I had to improvise, so yeah, familiar on a suicide run. I could have wasted another wolf scroll, but that just puts you in the same position as before except I am wasting your resources. I quite agree that it is silly and wouldn;t happen in a typical D & D environment but: (1) It very nearly won you the match (2) Suicide familiars do happen if a wizard's character life depended on it (which Gladius simulates). my previous points notwithstanding. im 10 feet away from a "Large" fighter getting ready to cast a spell that can conceivably cover 4 consecutive 5' squares with NON friendly critters that would hurt me something bad... and WHY didnt i move to a minimum safe distance before casting? You did not move because summon swarm is a full round spell and Yasha would simply move away if she had the opportunity to. If anything, Gonbow should be complaining I put Yasha in a dire spot. Apparantly this is all missed in your frustration, but you should realize I that the way I worked it out gave you an 85% chance of winning. * Yasha needs to roll a 14 on her listen check to pinpoint you precisely and get an attack off in the first place. 35% chance for Yasha to win. * If Yasha hears you, she still has to hit you. Granted this is easy as she needs to roll a 3 [which easily could be a 7 with mage armor which makes quite a bit of difference, 30% of missing is much higher than 10%], but it aint automatic and further reduces her chances to win down to 31%. * Even if Yasha connects, she still has to overcome the concealment check. This reduces her chances in half to 15%. Now, I didn't know the exact percentage but I knew they were very much in your favor when I decided to have Dalamar start summoning. I think that is pretty fair considering you didn't give me the slightest inkling of what to do and compelled me to think for you. During the fight I did think of a way that might have gotten your swarm off, but how fair would that be to Gonbow to have me devise tactics for your character? That's your job, I can't make a major Pitlord intervention like that and make Yasha lose. As it was, Gonbow had only a small window which he happened to get lucky with. |

| TheMagister09-10-05, 07:55 PM | @TheMagister If you notice I did not say to use my sleep arrows in the fight (because my opponent is a wood elf and is immune to sleep. Also, you didn't include a summary at the end of the fight of what expendables were used and you didn't include the money for profession that I made (60gp). OOPS! Totally forgot about that little racial tidbit. I did the best I could with your tactics...they...left a lot to the imagination. I'll edit the sleep arrows out and add your profession money in. Edit: Finished editing out the sleep arrows and added in your mundane income. Sorry about the oversight! Sorry about how it turned out, too. He was just better prepared than you were, is all. TM |

| nightbanegod09-10-05, 11:19 PM | comments written in redNote PHB 176 under concentration. If the target moves out of range, the spell reacts as if the concentration is broken.ok then if concentration is broken it does say in my tactics that the spell will last for another 2 rounds after i stop concentrating so i wouldnt mind Thus, you must be within the range of the bats at all times. As you are closer and they have blindsense they have exactly 20 feet of blindsense, and at my caster level they can be cast up to 35 feet away so it is moot that i would be inside their blindsense... since i wouldnt. and since nothing is in thieir blind sense, they need to make skill checks of listen/spot to see if they find anyone to attack, im invisibile and Yasha is not so they would see her, they will go after you see last point, not Yasha. Yasha is like 150 feet away from you (start 30 feet, ready move another 55, initiative resets, she double moves, another 100 feet). As you gave me no contingency tactics if the summons didn't work sorry about that, as i look over them, i dont account for Yasha being entirely based around getting away from me untill something else happens. so yes. my bad about the contingency, I had to improvise, so yeah, familiar on a suicide run. I could have wasted another wolf scroll, but that just puts you in the same position as before except I am wasting your resources i did state in my tactics that i really didnt care if you used the summon scrolls even if it seems like they would be wasted and since my plan was based around. I quite agree that it is silly and wouldnt happen in a typical D & D environment but: (1) It very nearly won you the match (2) Suicide familiars do happen if a wizard's character life depended on it (which Gladius simulates). You did not move because summon swarm is a full round spell and Yasha would simply move away if she had the opportunity to i was refering to moving away before casting, i normally wouldnt cast in a position where i could take a hit in the first place, not moving mid spell. If anything, Gonbow should be complaining I put Yasha in a dire spot. Apparantly this is all missed in your frustration indeed i apologize about my frustration, i just didnt think that my character was run as properly as i would have run him, again i apologize about the trouble i cause, if you ask my girlfriend im rather good at causing trouble :D , but you should realize I that the way I worked it out gave you an 85% chance of winning. * Yasha needs to roll a 14 on her listen check to pinpoint you precisely and get an attack off in the first place. 35% chance for Yasha to win. * If Yasha hears you, she still has to hit you. | King Uther09-10-05, 11:33 PM | @ Mind Rogue and Luni 1. CLW was mentioned, and so that has to stand. 2. You also didn't mention tumbling in your tactics, but that is probably because you didn't espect to have to. I personally feel you shouldn't be allowed to, but that is because of my experience with the same sort of things in other fights. 3. I feel the fight should stand as is, because if it gets changed a few other things would have to as well. When she charges, I get 2 AoOs. I for charging, and one for breaching the space from 15' reach to 10'. So I would get 3 attacks to your 1. Plus I specified to withdraw and set it up my way to avoid AoOs. 4. Yoriko did a fantastic job of breaking down my gameplan. Kudos on making me have to try. It is funny that true strike was wasted on the grapple. You made me have to waste a lot of resources merely because of your character. |
| xanadu09-11-05, 01:30 AM | Nightbanegod, I know what you are thinking about your first opportunity to summon. It wont work. (1) Yasha breaks their LOS behind cover, if they fly randomly to search for a target, that will be you. (2) The bats move 40 feet per round, meaning they'll double move 80 whereas you can only move 60 while maintaining concentration. How do you propose to maintain the 30 feet distance? (3) If Yasha doesn't break cover, she still outpaces to bats by 15 feet. How do the bats catch her? If it makes you feel better I will waste my time and put the 5 rounds or so that bats will fly around and do nothing. As a caster, you need to take into account your main spell tactic not working for whatever reason. Disruption, a saving throw, or simply moving out of the way and breaking LOS are all common occurrences. No contigency means no complaining when the pitlord creates a scenario where your odds of winning are greater than 50-50 as they were here. I could move you 60 feet away and cast, but then what's to stop Yasha from simply running away on her round. Now she's 150 feet away when the bats appear and you aren't even sure where she is. After that what's to stop her from then drinking a postion of invisibility? Sure, you can see her but the bats cant and you cant exactly tell them "over there". I maintain that what I had you do gave you the best chance of winning under the circumstances of keeping you invisible. Her spiked chain hits only 15% of the time, a risk more than worth taking considering she hosed your tactic once before. I think the correct move for you was to cast Tasha's Hideous Laughter. Yes you would have lost your invisibility but she has a will save of +0 (!) and you have spell focus enchantment. Even if she somehow makes it, you can move 60 feet away and avoid her charge while getting off fireball and/or magic missiles, or even the bats, she'll most certainly be gunning for you now that she can see you and thus you wouldn't have to worry about her running away. If you ran the character the way you have in mind, the bats never reach Yasha. It's ok, I know losing is frustrating, yet I think you understimated your opponent. |
| Luni09-11-05, 01:57 AM | 3. I feel the fight should stand as is, because if it gets changed a few other things would have to as well. When she charges, I get 2 AoOs. | Altaris1309-11-05, 04:29 AM | Cool! A win for Zamier, and only his second match. ;) Methinks I need to stop buying so many duplicates scrolls/potions/stones and make sure I have a wider variety. Thanks for the pointers Gonbow. I know Divine Favor is rather pitiful, but it's what I had this fight. For the most part, I had Kaigan's tactics down this time around. I wish I hadn't used the See Invis to start off with though, was pretty much a waste. Of course, if Kaigan had gone Invis, then I'd probably not be saying that. :) Anyhow, great fight. Good tactics Kaigan, though they are scroll dependent. Thanks for Pitlording Gon! |

Yoriko did a fantastic job of breaking down my gameplan. Kudos on making me have to try. It is funny that true strike was wasted on the grapple. You made me have to waste a lot of resources merely because of your character. Yes, the CLW must stand (although if I survive to need another potion, the CMW will hopefully be used). However, the tumble thing is something that I generally assume from players, since they cannot possibly predict everything. I always assume that if one of the gladiators has tumble, they will use it if the situation warrants it. Since I didn't say not to tumble, and Yoriko has a reasonable intellect (she is smart enough to have combat expertise) this would be something she would do. Also my tactics did say to chuck javelins at you and then have you come to me. Also, I'm wondering how you have 3 attacks. While you do have combat reflexes, moving through somebody's space twice only provokes 1 AoO, not 2. |

| Emrys Donovan09-11-05, 02:52 PM | I think you're probably going to have some trouble convincing Maraxus to rerun the fight. I had meant that I was going to challenge you to another battle eventually, and I'll have my own credit. And as for my tactics, I don't care if the fight isn't rerun, I was just wondering why, when I stated "Nico will start out by drawing a potion of Cat's Grace and moving full speed towards the center of the arena," did Maraxus move me 60'. |

Your attack of opportunity happens immediately before the charge attack is resolved. KerlanRayne |

| Prisonlords09-11-05, 06:00 PM | Madcow, I need tactics! Good use of Size 7. :) So, do I need to re-send them at this point, or are you good to go? LLPL As an added point of sarcastic harassment, I'd like to point out that there are TWO 'MadCow's in the CoCo, although, admittedly one has not posted in ages. (MadCow + Template = MadCowTemplate) vs (LLMadCow = LL + MadCow) |
| Maraxus09-11-05, 06:49 PM | Zassl and Vivi VS Gang Lion and Methos Cat didn't have time, so i ran it for him. -ToK Of cause, there is a lot in this fight, I don't like. First of cause the pairing as such, then the fact that they start in the same box and we opposed. ... But of cause this is bad luck. But then: Why is it not allowed to switch equipment before the fight? This is abolutly the same as other people deciding wheather to go into the arena with or without armor, before the fight. And this is no prebuff, so it does not need to be listed there. It is just that I press a scroll in his hand. Then, why did we run to (+/-1, 1)? Of cause at that point we get shoot! We wanted to move to (+/-2, +/-2) into cover. Sure this does not work with the first run. It would have been clever to stay in full cover in the first turn (+/-3, 1), but even if you had moved to (+/-2, 1) where we have at least partial cover, it would be acceptable. And since we are no automatons it would then be after our intention to move a bit south when we see Methos coming for us so fast that he would be there before the web is ready. Not to forget that a dying Vivi (who should not be dead, since he would have full cover from gang lion and use the prot from arrows scroll) and a Methos that comes within one movement is a very good example for interupted buffing, so Zassl should take out the web scroll aand ready to cast it, once Methos comes there where he can be webbed. Diplomacy check: If you really don't want that handing-over-the-scroll before the fight, okay. (However, since this is an important part of our tactic, you could pm us) And you should have a good reason why this is forbitten but donning/undonning armor not. Oh and yes, I cast all spells I have not im memory from scrolls. In my tactic I just say "cast", even if it is from a scroll, like mage armor and shield. :) PS: Sorry if I sound fierce. And sorry to say it anyway, since in my few pitlorded fights I have made the experiance, too, that I don't like to rerun fights for tactics now followed perfectly. But probably you have confused the coordinates (and (1,1) and (2,2) make a big diffrence). |

| Prisonlords09-11-05, 09:30 PM | @Xanadu: A few things about the fight. (If I have misunderstood/misread anything, just let me know) 1st: Goran only has 1 Power Point available for use during the fight, since he has Dissolving Weapon on Greatsword listed as part of his pre-buffs. He hasn't purchased Power Stones, so he has to use 3PP for this. 2nd: Round 5 & 6 have Omo-Na manifesting Precog: Off; this only takes 1 Standard action, so it was not interrupted or taking more than 1 round. 3rd: (This is really a result of 1 & 2) Omo-Na should have been able to get 1 extra attack in during the fight, and the Critical in Round 18 would have been confirmed since Force Screen (See below for explanation of why he cannot use Power Stones) was not available for Goran at all. 4th: Goran cannot use PowerStones at all since he has no ranks in PsiCraft. To use a powerstone requires PsiCraft 15 + the level of the power being used, and you get a +2 bonus on anything dealing with powers in your own class. So, Goran and Omo-Na need to have PsiCraft 4 for 1st level powers and PsiCraft 5 for 2nd level powers. That's it for now. I think I have addressed everything from the fight. LLMC aka LLPL |

If you have any ally that can fight (horses included), the fight goes on until a character dies or surrenders. Being knocked unconscious does not equate to surrendering. In a grapple, you lose your dexterity bonus against foes you aren't grappling. I'd say you also lose dodge bonuses to AC, seeing as you can't move. Probably, treat grapplers as flat footed against non-grapplers. |

| Emrys Donovan09-12-05, 12:24 AM | I just realized that in my tactics for Nico, I said to drink a potion of Cat's Grace when I didn't have one. I couldn't think of even one viable tactic that would negate your speed/range/ally advantage. If we were able to purchase stuff before fights and after pairings, I'd've bought her a lasso or something. Maybe a net...that's gladitorial enough. Because it's painfully obvious, it isn't written anywhere in your tactics. where we have at least partial cover, it would be acceptable. And since we are no automatons it would then be after our intention to move a bit south when we see Methos coming for us so fast that he would be there before the web is ready. Hmm...did you read the fight? You got shot at ONLY ONCE, and it missed. Even if you moved to -2/-2, Gang Lion exactly opposed, and you would not be granted any cover. to web Methos once this one is within sight (And in a position where he can be webbed. Please....PLEASE look at the map. It's why i go through all the trouble to make one. Do you see any place to anchor a web? NO!. Thank you. Not to forget that a dying Vivi (who should not be dead, since he would have full cover from gang lion and use the prot from arrows scroll) Please look at the Map. Your tactics were very cleare to run to the middle FIRST before buffing. Gang Lion shot him after the first round, so i'm not even sure where you would have found the time to buff with pro-arrows, so it's a moot point anyhow. (However, since this is an important part of our tactic, you could pm us) It wasn't important to your tactics. You really had NO tactics. It was just a "run to the middle, buff (if time), shoot mm's," I don't like to rerun fights for tactics now followed perfectly And i like re-running them even less when they are followed to a tee. I can't be held responsible that they were extremely poor and resulted in your early demise. It's like writing, "I fight player A, using resources as needed and fight smartly." That is an impossible tactic for the pitlord to follow. I cannot be biased towards characters and "make them fight smartly" when it would be a contradiction to their tactics. Did you read my fight of Brilf Zephyr vs the Gauth? Brilf wrote poor tactics vs such a creature (no offense to Brilf), and i had him follow through with his ultimately self-defeating tactics for 6 full rounds before making the decision to change it because he realized they were futile. You're right, i don't run people like automatons, but You and Vivi never had the chance to realized how horrible your tactics were until carried out. If i'm gonna change a players tactics, i better have a VERY good reason and have at least tried it their way and reasonable assume what a player would think of how they are working out. You and Vivi NEVER got that chance. Despite the "non-automaton" part, you didn't do anything horrible, assuming your character could survive. But he couldn't, and by the time you realized it, it was WAY too late. So please don't berate me for poor tactics that were submitted by you and vivi, and because you died a quick and horrible death, that somehow it's my fault because i didnt't make you act smarter? Oh please! If you wanted to act smarter write smarter tactics and don't come down on me for it. -ToK @LUNI: edited fight to include income from profession |
| Luni09-12-05, 02:30 AM | I've edited the Yoriko/Balbanes fight, so Yoriko could toss all her Javelins. Only significant change was Balbanes finished Yoriko off before she could drink her CLW. @Mind Rogue: I disagree with the tumble. If you could tumble and attack the same round, I would do so. I feel with no directions to the contrary in your tactics, that a charge would be used. If you had survived the initial charge, I feel that your character would learn and then tumble in. |

I feel with no directions to the contrary in your tactics, that a charge would be used. If you had survived the initial charge, I feel that your character would learn and then tumble in. In the PHB, it lists tumble as a "trained only" skill. Since she's a monk (boy, does Torgirr know she's a monk) she's extensively trained at melee combat. Yoriko should very obviously know when to or when not to tumble. If a character has ranks in a skill, they are familiar with its use in an intimate way. Its pretty outrageous to deny a character use of a skill just because they didn't specifically indicate a very specific circumstance in which it could be used. I present a question: If Yoriko were (for some reason) dropped from a dangerous height (say, 10 ft.) would you deny her the use of her Tumble skill to negate the damage just because she didn't specifically outline in her tactics that "If I'm dropped or fall from a dangerous height, use my tumble skill to relieve the damage."? Common sense says "no". Common sense for a monk is to use all the tools at her disposal to avoid being hit by a bigger, stronger opponent. The tumble skill is a very basic tool for a monk. I would think that it would be almost an ingrained, instinctive movement in her battlefield actions. That said, it doesn't say anywhere in the Rules of Gladius that a pitlord should "always consider rogues/monks to be using tumble when they are moving in threatened areas" like it does about "all characters should always be considered to be moving silently/hiding unless the players tactics specifically say otherwise" (I paraphrase here). But don't you think it makes basic, common sense? TM |

Also, looking over the "charge" entry in the Combat section of the PHB, I see nothing that prevents a charging character from tumbling during a charge. During the second part of a move, the character could tumble up to 20' as part of normal movement at half-speed, or even take a -5 to the tumble check and tumble up to 20' as part of normal movement at full speed. TM Tumble at one-half speed as part of normal movement, provoking no attacks of opportunity while doing so. Failure means you provoke attacks of opportunity normally. Check separately for each opponent you move past, in the order in which you pass them (player’s choice of order in case of a tie). Each additional enemy after the first adds +2 to the Tumble I wouldn't classify a charge as normal movement. But don't you think it makes basic, common sense? Hmm. I understand what you are saying. Really, I do. Initially when I ran the fight, I didn't even know Yoriko had tumble. Never noticed it. When Mind Rogue, mentioned that Yoriko had tumble, the tactics were posted, and it was revealed that Balbanes got 3 attacks for a charge. Now, I have a problem. Tactics have been revealed, and Mind Rogue insists [understandably!] that Yoriko would tumble in to avoid the AoOs. If I change anything, King Uther probably complains, because Yoriko would avoid his tactic. Note: King Uther made no mention of readying vs an attack in case Yoriko tumbles in. Mind Rogue makes no mention of tumbling in to fight since Balbanes gets 2 AoO's. What am I supposed to do to be fair? |
| Usurpator09-12-05, 03:19 AM | What am I supposed to do to be fair? I don't have any interest in said battle, by my vote is for Yoriko using Tumble. I was frankly very suprised she didn't use Tumble and got all that AoO's when I read the fight, even went so far as to recheck her skills, since I assumed the only reason for her not to use Tumble would be a lack of ranks there. |

| TheMagister09-12-05, 04:22 AM | I wouldn't classify a charge as normal movement. Some emphasis mine. Charging is a special full-round action that allows you to move up to twice your speed and attack during the action. However it carries tight restrictions on how you can move. Movement During a Charge: You must move before your attack, not after. Condition Satisfied. You must move at least 10 feet (2 squares) and may move up to double your speed directly toward the opponent, and nothing can hinder your movement (such as difficult terrain or obstacles). Satisfied Here's what it means to have a clear path. First, you must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. I digress, but this is interesting. A character with a 10-foot reach who charges cannot "base" his opponent. He HAS to stop 10 ft. away in order to satisfy this requirement. I didn't know that! (If this space is occupied or otherwise blocked, you can't charge.) Second, if any line from your starting space to the ending space passes through a square that blocks movement (such as a wall) Satisfied. There is no blocking., slows movement (such as difficult terrain) Satisfied. There is no special quality about the square(s) she tumbles through that slows movement., or contains a creature (even an ally), you can't charge. The rest is irrelevant. The Tumble description explicitly states that you may Tumble "as part of normal movement." It includes Tumbling as a part of normal movement. That's why you can Tumble while you are crawling. You can only move 5 ft. when you crawl, but you can move that 5 ft. in an acrobatic fashion if you so desire to prevent the AoOs. You can Tumble while you jump, or fall. You can't Tumble while you climb, (unless you have a climb speed, in which case you can) because it's not part of normal movement. A rogue or monk with slippers of spiderclimb could literally tumble just about anywhere (it's kinda cool that way). Comments? TM |

| Maraxus09-12-05, 08:38 AM | I just realized that in my tactics for Nico, I said to drink a potion of Cat's Grace when I didn't have one. It didn't affect the battle, so either I can subtract 300 gold from my purse and put the potion in the expended items section, or Maraxus can just edit the fight as though I hadn't put that part. I don't care which. Wow, not only that. Even your opponent stated, that you would probably buff with cat's grace. ...But something must be in that turn, where you drink it ... I think it hurts nobody, if your character is as forgetful as you, so she realizes that she is out of cat's grace potion too late, too. Okay? :) |
| Altaris1309-12-05, 09:04 AM | OK, tactics issue resolved. I'll put the fight between Shan & Dameon up tonight. |
| Maraxus09-12-05, 09:46 AM | Do I have to be a lawyer to write tactics, that might work? When was it ever allowed? It had no effect, but i would like to see where it is allowed. No it is not. They are making decisons what to do about their own kit.I also made a decision about my own kit: Giving it Vivi! This is forbitten nowhere and it makes sense (what should be the point if the rules say nothing about it). First, we will start somewhere forward in our boxes. If we don't start in the same box, our first actions will be running into the center obstacle. ....that's why. Then say you wanna do that. Because it's painfully obvious, it isn't written anywhere in your tactics. So you did this really intentionally. I can't believe it. I don't know, what is an obstacle for you, for me it is the colum and the surounding 4 walls. By saying "run into" and not "next to", I think I made this quite clear. And from all the places in the obstacle, you move us to the worst! FROM NOW ON: IF I WRITE SOMETHING IN A TACTIC THAT CAN BE INTERPRETED IN TWO WAYS, FROM WHICH ONE IS TOTALLY STUPID AND ONE MIGHT ACTUALLY WORK, DON'T THINK ABOUT WHICH IS A BIT MORE LITERAL, TAKE THE SECOND!!! Hmm...did you read the fight? You got shot at ONLY ONCE, and it missed. Even if you moved to -2/-2, Gang Lion exactly opposed, and you would not be granted any cover. WE, the team that I played in got shot twice, the first shot splattering one of us outright, what would not have happened, if you hadn't twisted our words. And read the cover rules, no matter if I move to -2/2 or -2/-2, there is anmost allways cover. Please....PLEASE look at the map. It's why i go through all the trouble to make one. Do you see any place to anchor a web? NO!. Thank you. YES!! Look at the map yourself! There are (0, 8) (2,4) and (-2, 4), all very solid and high enough to anchor a web between. Here you are. Please look at the Map. Your tactics were very cleare to run to the middle FIRST before buffing. Gang Lion shot him after the first round, so i'm not even sure where you would have found the time to buff with pro-arrows, so it's a moot point anyhow. It wasn't important to your tactics. It was just a "run to the middle, buff (if time), shoot mm's," Yes, and since this IS the only way to not have to fight them together, and the only way to have a good chance I can web Methos. This could have worked, but you found a gap in the tactic and exploided it to have us do suicide. Even after the starting positions, only by seeing that the opponents act almost as we anticipated, with this tactic we could have a chance to win this. And i like re-running them even less when they are followed to a tee. I can't be held responsible that they were extremely poor and resulted in your early demise. It's like writing, "I fight player A, using resources as needed and fight smartly." That is an impossible tactic for the pitlord to follow. Of cause we can not contingend every possible step. We don't know where our opponents will start, don't know if we see them and how they move. And without this, we can not plan our movement precise on the square. You run us like compleat idiots and than you say: Oh, look at your tactics, so pooly, horrible, stupid. It is not! It is just the way you used it against us. We give you a small area we want to run into. You find the only two squares in that area, that have no cover. You don't ready Zassl to web Methos, allthrough he sees him coming! You don't allow Zassl to give Vivi a scroll - allthrough there is nothing that forbits it - and don't even ask, we what to do then to protect him from arrows. We gave you a tactic and you perverted it. If we had given you more, you had probably found a way to shoot ourselves into the head in our starting boxes! I want a complete rerun and I want another pitlord to do this, somebody who doesn't look at the tactic and sais: "How poor is that, I will make them lose quick and painless." PS: With what hands did the gauth open and drink the potions btw? He does not have a telekinesis-eye like the big beholders. Edit: Okay, calmed down ... Since it is allready monday and Zassl is used to loosing, I would accept it, probably Dr. Funk, too. That way I can at least say, that I would have won if the pitlord had not decided to make the opponents winner. I do think that you should not get credits for such a fight, however, but this is just my personal opinion, my elder. |
| michael_noah09-12-05, 10:08 AM | @Maraxus: Be Nice. @ToK: You too. Just don't let this arguing get any more, or stay as, heated. On the actual points of contention - It seems to me that any gladiator in the world, when he sees his opponents while he is running into the central obstacle where he plans to buff, would stop in a position where he has cover, rather than taking the extra steps to expose himself. The tactics could have been more clear on this, but I think it's a very reasonable contention. It does also seem that the 5' rocks could anchor a web. There is nothing that says how big the diametrically oposed areas must be, but two huge boulders seem to me that they'd do a good job. Maybe there is something more specific about this spell that I do not know. On another note, in team fights, I propose that teams should always start in the same box. Starting in the same box when your oponents are seperated is a huge advantage. |
| michael_noah09-12-05, 10:11 AM | Note PHB 176 under concentration. On this - I do not believe that the quote in the PHB applies here. It specifically says that if a Target of a spell moves out of range, it acts as if concentration were broken. Summon Swarm does not have a Target, it has an effect. I believe that one can keep concentrating on the spell even if the swarm moves out of range. |
| Maraxus09-12-05, 10:20 AM | On another note, in team fights, I propose that teams should always start in the same box. Starting in the same box when your oponents are seperated is a huge advantage. That could be a good idea for the future. In this fight however, it had even played to our advantage, since when I webbed Methos, the web also provided total cover from Gang Lion. *still a bit angry* |
| NiQil09-12-05, 10:35 AM | I'm not going to weigh in here about whether Maraxus or Tellish is correct...this has already gotten way too personal over something that is supposed to be fun. That being said... @Tellish I can't speak for my partner, but in the interest of no hard feelings, I am not at all opposed to a rerun. Whether you have the time to do that or feel so inclined is your call. But I would rather have the fight rerun than to see bickering like this, since this is not a RAW error, but a question as to whether tactics were followed. As I said, my partner is free to offer his own opinion, but if you need to know where we stand before you make a decision, well now you know where I weigh in. |
| sloisel09-12-05, 11:02 AM | I hate you. Settle down, boy. Sébastien Loisel |
| Snommelp09-12-05, 11:23 AM | I think that we should all stop for a moment and reflect upon the fact that ToK took a fight that was not his own so that the people in question would not have a week of complete inactivity. Now that that's been said, it's time to enter the fray... If we don't start in the same box, our first actions will be running into the center obstacle.Done. You can easily argue that your characters should have stopped one space sooner, and there is no good respnse to that, except perhaps that since you are running and your opponents started behind cover, you don't realize until too late that they are on that side of the arena. Irrelevant. You stop one space sooner, Gang Lion moves more diagonally (across Methos's line of movement) and still gets a clean shot. It is still two on one, and the one is still Zassl. Web: looking at your tactics, it really does look like you wanted to Web only after buffing was done. It's not difficult to change something from "once he is ready" to "as soon as Methos is in a position to be webbed." The first implies "wait until buffing is done," the second "interrupt buffing, this is important!" So, from my perspective: Vivi dies either way, Zassl buffs because that's what the tactics said to do. Post-script: on the point of stopping at (+/-3, 1): from your tactics, it looks like you would want to meet in the middle (especially for the scroll hand-off, which I agree is not a valid pre-buff). That would imply getting as close as reasonably possible. Your characters only know that they can't see each other at the start, so it seems logical that they would move at a fair clip in order to find each other. Also, if you did stop at (+/-3, 1), Gang Lion can still move diagonally and shoot Vivi. I'm afraid that from my POV Vivi is not savable this match. |
| Maraxus09-12-05, 11:31 AM | Okay, allready settled down. But first he runs the fight as he does and then he sais, that it was my tactic that was bad. Allready when I read "Without any contingency for what to do when grappled, Zassl will try to get away, hoping for a miracle." I though: Oh, he taunts me. As if a contingency would save me in that situation (well, one in the tactics, not the 6th level spell ;)). Plan was that Methos does not come that close and when, Vivi color sprays and we hope, I have a bit more luck. So we planed that this could be a problem, we did our best to prevent this, but the best we can do is write a tactic and hope that the pitlord applies it smartly. The combatant dilemma: If you write no tactic at all, you character won't have a single smart idea. The more precise you get, the more easy it is, that a situation ocures, in which the tactic is bad but the pitlord uses it nevertheless and you do something dumb. This reminds me of my lost fiht with Mythos, where "search from within the center" was interpreted as "run around there making noise and waste no time in spotting", while my opponent basicly had no (movement) plan, and in lack of something to do bad he found the best counter-tactic. The only diffrence is, the scale, in that fight, the diffrence between what I did and what I had done clever was quite close. And that it had made no diffrence of cause. Snommelp: If Vivi was at (3, 1), Gang Lion could not have moved and fired. At (2, 1), this would be possible but I think this would be quite metagaming for Gang Lion to move out for Vivi, if he can shoot at Zassl. I agree, that I was not very clear about that interupted buffing contingency, and if that was the only point I had said nothing. |
| Snommelp09-12-05, 11:36 AM | Ah, memories. I had a wizard when LG just started, and one fight the tactics "avoid obstacles where he might be hiding and cast Sleep" turned into "run to the center and stab with arrows." I was rather upset about that; I can see where you're coming from. The trick is to respond in a calm manner, present calm evidence that your tactics were not followed, and continue in a calm fashion. If you act calmly, people are receptive, but if you react with anger, they get defensive. |
| Luni09-12-05, 11:43 AM | Tactics are both good and bad. I had a cleric, who by virtue of location, the two gladiators saw each other round one. My opponent runs foward so he can charge and grapple and kill next round. What does my cleric do? Why, cast Deathwatch and then draw another scroll. My opponent didn't even have Imp. Grapple, so drawing a weapon would of been preferable to a scroll. All because I didn't put an interrupt clause in my tactics. I learned though. I never but spellcasters at the front anymore. |
| Maraxus09-12-05, 11:44 AM | But he started it. ;) Sorry for spaming, will stop it now. |
| Luni09-12-05, 12:11 PM | I've modified the Yoriko/Balbanes fight again to add in a Tumbling Charge. Result: Yoriko tumbles in to avoid the AoO due to movement, but still gets hit by the 2 Other Attacks. End Result: The same. |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-12-05, 12:49 PM | Hmm...No. I was never upset in any way shape or form with my first comments. I just thought i gave a very thorough explanation of why the fight went the way it did. @Maraxus: Shame on you. I have nothing further to say. If you insist on acting so childish, please leave this forum. It is definately not suited for you. I followed your tactics and that is the end. There isn't anything wrong with the fight, the way i interpreted them or anything else with it. You will get no rerun. Not by me or any other pitlord. Thank you very much. -ToK |
| TelinArtho09-12-05, 01:07 PM | First, remember everyone - Be Nice. Second, while I don't agree with Maraxus's inflamed words - I very much don't agree with ToK telling Maraxus to leave. Frankly the community is pretty small and a comment like this can only make things worse - not better. Maraxus offered an apology and then tried to make like of the situation. Third, having looked over the fight, I feel I must speak up, because ToK has insisted on following tactics to the letter. Here's the first few lines from Gang Lion's/Methos's tactics: These are joint tactics. Start Gang Lion off in cover with bow in hand. In round 1, cast Shield of Faith from memory. In round 2, cast Divine Favor from memory and move out towards the center pillars. Start Methos off in front middle of box with bow in hand. In round 1, tap tattoo of Inertial Armor and move out towards the center pillars. In round 2, move and ready an action to tap tattoo of Force screen upon LOS of an enemy. In round 1, here's Gang Lion's action: Gang Lion casts divine favour and moves closer to central obstacles There is no reason why Gang Lion wouldn't follow the tactic for Shield of Faith. As such, he would cast it, then cast Divine Favor on Round 2 and move out. This would make it possible for Zassl to move and give the scroll of Prot. From Arrows to Vivi - who could then cast it without a problem. |

Gang Lion's "supposed" divine favor was never taken into affect when he shot at Vivi. As for asking him to leave? I didn't see any apolagy, and i don't think anyone, not just me, should have to endure such flaming remarks when i, or anyone else who would have had to suffer, did anything wrong. That's all i have to say on this issue. As for the "small community", communities get even smaller when flamers flame. I've been here since the beginning and i've seen more people leave as a result of flames than any other reason. We have 4 people quit in one week alone. Go horse! Note to self... if fighting someone with a horse, kill them not their horse. |

The horse is not for sale, though. A question - does a 20 on the touch attack for a grapple check make the grapple "crit"? I do not believe that it does. |
| TelinArtho09-12-05, 01:42 PM | You're right - he didn't apologize - and for misspeaking I do. I personally don't think it is a good idea for someone in a prominent position in the CoCo to ask someone to leave for a single occurance of flaming. This is a board that is fraught with emotion - and sometimes things do get out of hand. This is my opinion, and I just feel there was a better way of saying it. Back to the fight itself - you still did not address the actual issue I brought up. Gang Lion's tactic was to cast Shield of Faith, then Divine Favor and then move out. In your fight, you had him cast one spell (SoF or DF - I don't care which) and then move out. He moves out 1 round early for no reason. If the fight had gone another way, the gladiator would surely look at this as a breach in his tactics. |
| waywreth09-12-05, 01:44 PM | A question - does a 20 on the touch attack for a grapple check make the grapple "crit"? I do not believe that it does. No, I don't think it does anything except assure you succeed your touch attack. Edit - Of course it doesn't really matter since the person that got critted won anyway and didn't use anything additional - but it's important to point out as it could matter in other fights in the future. |

If the fight had gone another way, the gladiator would surely look at this as a breach in his tactics. I don't see Gang Lion moving out one round early. Round 1: Cast SoF, then move 30' towards central columns. That's exactly what he did. I don't think i'm missing anything. But sometimes the obvious does escape me and maybe my brain is just stuck in one position and needs to be unstuck. Perhaps you could elaborate? I honestly don't see what you're getting at with him moving out one round early. BUT, for the sake of arguments, lets just assume i did and see what the results would have been....Gang Lion would be 80' away to shoot at Vivi, not affecting the shot...and Vivi still dies. He would still angle off to shoot at Zassl. I admit, sometimes obvious things escape me and i'm looking too deeply at something. Maybe this is that something and i'm not seeing it. I see Gang Lion casting SoF, and moving 30' in one round towards central pillar. I don't see why that's against his tactics. -ToK |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-12-05, 01:51 PM | No, I don't think it does anything except assure you succeed your touch attack. I'll back that up as well. The roll to touch is just that...touch. No dmg is dealt on the touch. -ToK |
| Luni09-12-05, 01:51 PM | @TheMagister: The dice really hate you... |
| TelinArtho09-12-05, 01:56 PM | Gang Lion's tactics say to Cast SoF then cast Divine Favor then move out. What you did was have him cast Divine Favor (correct), then move out (incorrect) and fire (incorrect). Even if he intended to move out after casting SoF, his tactics would still include Divine Favor before firing. My point is that Gang has 2 rounds of buffing and you only gave him 1. |
| Begferdeth09-12-05, 02:00 PM | Arghh... another loss for Ch'Ch'Ili. And I got sooo close too! :( And now Im in the 4th level fights. It can only get worse. |

With regard to the portion of tactics that Telin quoted, that is. Our intent with Gang Lion's tactics was to perform exactly as it did...cast then move, cast then move. The intent was to mirror Methos' actions, which was to tap tattoo then move, and then drink potion and move. However, as it is written....and I freely admit that I wrote it poorly, looking back on it now....I can easily see where it is implied that Gang Lion should not move in the first round, as no movement was specifically mentioned like it was for round 2. Under a literal interpretation of what is written, no movement was called for. However, under the intent of the tactics, there was. In this case, it would appear that Tellish used the intent of the tactics over the literal written tactic. I have no issue with that, since it was what our intent was. However, in a literal sense, what Tellish did goes against what is written. Whether that is cause for a rerun, I again leave in the hands of the appropriate party. |

I don't believe it was against the written tactics, nor the intended tactics. Cast first then move, is just that. He casts, then moves. To imply otherwise would have been erroneous on my part. You guys are giving this far too much credit. Can you not see the lose/lose situation you are putting on this? When someone writes a tactic saying what gang had said...the pitlord cannot win. If he doesn't move and it results in his loss, he complains. If he moves and someone wants to be a literary lawyer in interpreting fine data and analogies because they lose...i lose again. Please let it go. Nothing was done improperly according to tactics, nor rules. Someone lost, someone one. This happens in every fight. The only difference here, is i got flamed four times because of it and am coming under constant scrutiny and people have forgotten what the real issue is. Believe me, i can twist words like it's nobodie's business and mock any and all tactics sent in. But that's not my job, or any other pitlords to look for "fine interpretations of the word" to favour one gladiator over another. All i have to work with is the piece of paper in front of me with tactics written on it, not their brain. Anyhow, this is flogging a dead horse. Peace out. -ToK |
| xanadu09-12-05, 02:14 PM | @Xanadu: A few things about the fight. KerlanRayne is right, this counts against his prebuff limit. 2nd: Round 5 & 6 have Omo-Na manifesting Precog: Off; this only takes 1 Standard action, so it was not interrupted or taking more than 1 round. Oops. That is the problem with cut and pasting. I'm pretty sure the attack missed when I did the fight, but since I don't have the roll in front of me and cannot be totally sure, I will roll again. You hit and caused 5 damage. 3rd: (This is really a result of 1 & 2) Omo-Na should have been able to get 1 extra attack in during the fight, and the Critical in Round 18 would have been confirmed since Force Screen (See below for explanation of why he cannot use Power Stones) was not available for Goran at all. See 1. 4th: Goran cannot use PowerStones at all since he has no ranks in PsiCraft. You are right here. But he didn't use any stones. KerlanRayne, I suggest you ask Pitlords to retroactively switch some skill points. |
| nightbanegod09-12-05, 02:17 PM | No, I don't think it does anything except assure you succeed your touch attack. Edit - Of course it doesn't really matter since the person that got critted won anyway and didn't use anything additional - but it's important to point out as it could matter in other fights in the future. since it is an unarmed touch attack roll. you can crit on it just like any other attack roll .. and since it is unarmed its only a 20! to crit and a x2 multiplier, and since hes a monk with improved unarmed strike.. it does lethal damage instead of subdual. i have talked with king uther about this awhile back... not for this specific fight mind you. but this specific situation.. criting on the touch attack... it just doulbes the damage for the unarmed strike. however if he had botched the grapple check after the crit hit .. you would have taken no damage i believe |
| michael_noah09-12-05, 02:19 PM | since it is an unarmed touch attack roll. you can crit on it just like any other attack roll .. and since it is unarmed its only a 20! to crit and a x2 multiplier you can crit, sure - but the touch doesn't do any damage. only later, the completely seperate grapple check does damage. there's obviously no need to change the fight - i just want to make sure I have this rule right. |

| Maraxus09-12-05, 02:27 PM | I don't think it matters, that Gang Lion moved out in the first round. Having seen Zassl run in there it is not a bad thing to do and it does not stand in big contrast to the general tactic. I think that was a good move within the tactic, allthrough waiting for one more round would be a more literal interpretation. I had just wished we would get this, too. Tellish_of_Ket: So and now you tell me I should leave and I would make people leave with my tone? And you want an apology? Everybody: For me, this topic is over. I am sorry for "shouting" (Caps Lock and size4) in this puplic topic. I was angered, not (only) by the fight but by Tellish's reply on my first complains. I'm still standing to everything I said but apologize for the form and the place. |

| Mind Rogue09-12-05, 05:18 PM | I've modified the Yoriko/Balbanes fight again to add in a Tumbling Charge. Result: Yoriko tumbles in to avoid the AoO due to movement, but still gets hit by the 2 Other Attacks. End Result: The same. Wouldn't the tumble skill also prevent the AoO granted by Hold the Line Tumble at one-half speed as part of normal movement, provoking no attacks of opportunity while doing so. Failure means you provoke attacks of opportunity normally. Check separately for each opponent you move past, in the order in which you pass them (player’s choice of order in case of a tie). Each additional enemy after the first adds +2 to the Tumble DC. Hold The Line [General] Prerequisites Combat Reflexes, base attack bonus +2. Benefit You may make an attack of opportunity against a charging opponent who enters an area you threaten. Your attack of opportunity happens immediately before the charge attack is resolved. Normal You only get an attack of opportunity against a character that exits a square you threaten. This makes it seem to me like it is the movement that is provoking the AoO, which tumble would prevent. |
| Cerebus1309-12-05, 05:25 PM | Wouldn't the tumble skill also prevent the AoO granted by Hold the Line This makes it seem to me like it is the movement that is provoking the AoO, which tumble would prevent.Tumbling can only occur during "normal movement" however, which a few people have said means during a normal move action. This interpretation makes sense to me as well because Tumbling during a Charge would screw up the momentum behind the attack...for the same reason you can't turn during a Charge without extra Feats. |
| Mind Rogue09-12-05, 05:49 PM | Well, as I said before, Yoriko was actually within range to do a tumble-move and still be able to attack afterwards, although whether this still holds true at this point I would have to check. |
| Emrys Donovan09-12-05, 06:11 PM | Wow, not only that. Even your opponent stated, that you would probably buff with cat's grace. ...But something must be in that turn, where you drink it ... I think it hurts nobody, if your character is as forgetful as you, so she realizes that she is out of cat's grace potion too late, too. Okay? :) Ok, sounds good. |
| King Uther09-12-05, 06:20 PM | You cannot tumble during a charge. End of story. You could tumble through a double move, but not a charge. If you could tumble in a charge, you could also tumble during a Run. Tumbling has to be part of a move action. Skip says it in Rules of the Game: Movement Part 3. |

As for the gold/XP, I thought since we both brought in mount they "cancelled out" and it's a 1200/1200 deal? Sébastien Loisel If you have two 4th levelers against two 4th levelers, and one person on each team brought a mount, work it out this way: 1200 for Opponent 1 + (1200 for opponent 2 * 1.2 for his mount [I hope that's right]) = 2640. Player 1 actually gets it, but Player 2 has to cut this down to 80% from his mount for 2,112. This is assuming that the CR 1 mount gives a 20% adjustment at level 4. I am quite likely wrong about this, so check the numbers. Also, the other team will recieve a third of this. However, mounts don't cancel each other out. You never add percentages directly together; instead you must multiply them. Thus, if you have a +20% and a -20%, you really have a 120% * 80% = 96% of the normal reward. |
| Altaris1309-13-05, 09:11 AM | Thanks a lot Luni. I sent you the tactics a bit ago. |
| sloisel09-13-05, 09:18 AM | If you have two 4th levelers against two 4th levelers, and one person on each team brought a mount, work it out this way: Sounds reasonable, but the percentages are off and, although I would very much like to get >2000XP, I think you need to eventually divide by two. As per the FAQ, the % for ECL4 with light warhorse is 12.5%. So their XP value is 1200+1200*1.125=2550XP/gold. So the we would both get 1275XP/gold, except that I have a 12.5% penalty, so I get 1116XP/gold. For the other team, it's divided by 3 so 425 and 372 XP/gold. And add on top my 80gp (total 1196gp for me) for crafting garden gnomes, which I always sell with their own travel pictures and travel diaries. Does that sound about right? Sébastien Loisel |
| TelinArtho09-13-05, 09:52 AM | @Ellorion - fight looks good to me - though my rewards should only be 1200/1200 not 1200/1280 (I don't have a profession or anything to make money with for this character). Thanks for running it. |

| TelinArtho09-13-05, 10:50 AM | It looks like all of the fights are done except this one: Karisia (Luni) vs Alec (Pauper): Gonbow Would the gladiators like me to take the fight up? Gonbow - are you going to have the time to finish it? |
| Gonbow09-13-05, 11:48 AM | It looks like all of the fights are done except this one: Karisia (Luni) vs Alec (Pauper): Gonbow Would the gladiators like me to take the fight up? Gonbow - are you going to have the time to finish it? Actually, I was just about to post asking for someone to take this from me. My class load and college is not very aggreeable with running alot of fights; Not even two a week, apparently =/. Once someone takes this I'll forward the tactics to them asap. |
| TelinArtho09-13-05, 12:11 PM | I'll take it - that's why I posted. |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-13-05, 12:15 PM | Aren't 9 Wood Elven warriors EL of 3? Admitedly, I'm no expert but thats what I calculated it at... Edit: And 6 Wood Elven warriors are an EL of 3! Silly me. I must of been thinking about skeletons CR not the elves. Nine, Level 1 warriors are EL 6 or 7. DMG says both. So 6 would be best, but thats irrelivant. 3 Level 1 warriors is EL 3. -ToK |

| Luni09-13-05, 01:18 PM | Thanks a lot Luni. I sent you the tactics a bit ago. I got them. GOing to run the fight right away. |
| xanadu09-13-05, 01:44 PM | after much teeth pulling, i have the BIG TEAM BATTLE (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7230194&postcount=371) and since i couldnt figure out the exp for the fight since 1 person from each team brought a mount ... can someone help me with this .. and then start complaining about the fight? @ Nightbanegod, No complaints, it looked like you ran a good fight. If I'd like to change anything, it is RakkaR's attack rolls in the beginiing of the fight, but that is just dice. The way Sloisel did the XP sounds right. |
| xanadu09-13-05, 02:06 PM | Just one problem i see. You can only Mini-Quest your EL-2. Otherwise everyone would just pick the weakest creature they can find that's like 2 EL's above your own and just get free major exp every week. -ToK Grumble, grumble, then why doesn't it says "Luni miniquests for some skeletons." I thought this was a monster fight until I saw Luni's tactics and still even then wasn't quite sure since the ECL just happened to be the same. I'm not sure that was "free," for a while there I thought Ariel would actually lose... |
| TelinArtho09-13-05, 02:10 PM | @Gonbow, Luni and Pauper - tactics received for Karisia vs Alac - running the fight now. |
| Luni09-13-05, 02:49 PM | Dameon and Shan have duked it out. The winner is to be seen here (http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7237691&postcount=374) |
| michael_noah09-13-05, 03:12 PM | Dameon and Shan have duked it out. The winner is to be seen here (http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7237691&postcount=374) This is, (I'm sorry!) incorrect. Dameon can't use his glaive when he's a mephit, because it's too big. Expansion doesn't help. All your equipment, worn or carried, is similarly expanded by this power. Melee and projectile weapons deal more damage. |
| NiQil09-13-05, 03:16 PM | This is, (I'm sorry!) incorrect. Dameon can't use his glaive when he's a mephit, because it's too big. Expansion doesn't help. Michael is correct....by going to a mephit, this makes him smaller than the glaive since it does not change size with him as far as I know. Expansion will not fix the problem, since in expanding the glaive that is already bigger than the mephit, it remains bigger. |
| Altaris1309-13-05, 03:19 PM | Technically, Dameon can just drop the glaive, then use the Expansion to return to medium size and then pick it back up. That's a free action, standard action then a move action. Can be done all in one round, providing he's already got the stone in hand. |
| Luni09-13-05, 03:20 PM | Sine Huan was under the impression that he could use his Glaive, Dameon could simply drop it and then pick it back up. I'll assume this is a simple mistake/oversight. |
| michael_noah09-13-05, 03:20 PM | right - but that's going to significantly change the fight. |
| Luni09-13-05, 03:23 PM | right - but that's going to significantly change the fight. He loses 1 move action. Let me see. Shan is still going to shoot, and Dameon will close with his 100' movement. Their positions might be different, but Shan still is going to lose before buffs start fading. |
| michael_noah09-13-05, 03:30 PM | He loses 1 move action. Let me see. Shan is still going to shoot, and Dameon will close with his 100' movement. Their positions might be different, but Shan still is going to lose before buffs start fading. I must have looked at the positions incorrectly. Maybe it was because the first round is posted 3 times (just kidding). You're probably right, he still flies up, then there is nothing for shan to do. |
| xanadu09-13-05, 03:42 PM | Is a medium size mephit using a large sized glaive? Medium -> drop -> alter self -> pickup -> expansion -> large? How is dropping necessary? Medium -> alter self -> small -> expansion -> medium. Does Huan want a medium sized mephit using a medium sized glaive? |
| michael_noah09-13-05, 03:45 PM | Huan needs to use a medium glaive, he can't use a large one. The glaive does not get smaller from alter self, so expansion makes it large, unless he drops it before manifesting expansion. |
| Luni09-13-05, 03:47 PM | I must have looked at the positions incorrectly. Maybe it was because the first round is posted 3 times (just kidding). You're probably right, he still flies up, then there is nothing for shan to do. Your right the 1st round is in there 3 times. I just wanted everyone too see the 1st round. As for the glaive, he drops it sometime to pick it back up. I wasn't aware that Alter Self didn't effect Size. |
| xanadu09-13-05, 03:48 PM | Oh, I didn't know alter self doesn't resize your equipment |
| Luni09-13-05, 03:53 PM | It is interesting. Polymorph, Alter Self and Metamorphisis all say nothing about equipment being resized... |
| King Uther09-13-05, 03:55 PM | Because it doesn't resize your equipment. |
| Zepher09-13-05, 03:58 PM | Hey Everyone, I know I am quiet, but I do like to pop in from time to time. @Huan For the future, buy a small glaive! You'll still get the reach and this problem will be solved. :) |
| Luni09-13-05, 04:01 PM | Because it doesn't resize your equipment. So, a human polymorphing into a Hill Giant is going to lose all his clothing? Ewwww. |
| NiQil09-13-05, 04:02 PM | So, a human polymorphing into a Hill Giant is going to lose all his clothing? Ewwww. Think of it more like Lou Ferrigno (sp?) in the Incredible Hulk tv show.....as they expand it rips to shreds, so that only tatters remain. |
| Altaris1309-13-05, 04:11 PM | Alter Self does not resize equipment, but Enlarge/Expansion and Polymporh (x) do resize/subsume equipment. If your new form can use it, then it is resized by the magic. If your new form cannot, then your item(s) are subsumed and become non-functional. |
| michael_noah09-13-05, 04:15 PM | This is when it becomes important to note whether CoCo follows the Rules of the Game Errata, I mean faq, i mean... article. Because, the spell Polymorph, as written does not resize equipment. But, the RotG article says that it does. In general, a change from one form that has a humanoid shape to another form that has a humanoid shape leaves all equipment in place and functioning. The subject's equipment changes to match the assumed form. It becomes the appropriate size for the assumed form and it fits the assumed form. The spellcaster can change minor details in your equipment, such as color, surface texture, and decoration. When a subject changes from a form with a humanoid shape to a form with a nonhumanoid shape (or vice versa) most of his equipment is subsumed into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. Items the subject could conceivably wear in an assumed form remain functional. For example, most items worn on the body, such as armor, cloaks, boots, and most other items of clothing made for a humanoid body won't fit on a nonhumanoid body. Some items can fit on just about any kind of body. For example, a ring fits just about any form that has digits of some kind (the limit of two rings applies no matter how many hands or similar appendages a creature has). Likewise, a necklace fits on just about any form that has a neck. |

Because, the spell Polymorph, as written does not resize equipment. But, the RotG article says that it does. The only problem with that quote is that it says nothing about equipment not worn. Wielded equipment would probably still need to go by the spell/power as written. Worn equipment and wielded equipment, I think, are two different things. |

Worn equipment and wielded equipment, I think, are two different things. Actually, the whole first paragraph talks about all equipment. And, it's the important paragraph, because we know what happens if worn things don't fit (not just aren't the right size). They meld. It's the things that would fit if the were big (small) enough that we're worried about - and those are all covered in the first paragraph. |

RotG make it clear that equipment resizes which makes me believe that is Polymorph RAI. |
| King Uther09-13-05, 04:38 PM | Maybe I should have specified. I was under the impression Polymorph resized your equipment, but not your weapons. |
| michael_noah09-13-05, 04:41 PM | Maybe I should have specified. I was under the impression Polymorph resized your equipment, but not your weapons. This is not the case. If we go by the spell description - nothing changes size. If we go by RotG, everything does. |
| Altaris1309-13-05, 05:11 PM | Rotg, FAQ & Errata have all been quoted many times before, often by ToK, a long standing Elder. I think we can safely take them as official CoCo material. |
| michael_noah09-13-05, 05:12 PM | Rotg, FAQ & Errata have all been quoted many times before, often by ToK, a long standing Elder. I think we can safely take them as official CoCo material. However, this is a situation in which the RotG is directly contradicting what is printed. If the elders say so, I'm fine with it - I just want it to be spelled out. |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-13-05, 05:20 PM | You are wrong ToK. 3 Level 1 Fighters is EL 3. Fighters = CR 1 Each Warriors = CR 1/2 Each. DOh! Slap me please. Twice i've mistyped something this week. I mean to say a pc class-type. So ya, i guess 5-6 elven warriors would be EL 3. -ToK |
| Usurpator09-13-05, 05:51 PM | Maybe I should have specified. I was under the impression Polymorph resized your equipment, but not your weapons. And next thing you know gladiators are going to stow their weapons in their backpacks, polymorph and then get it out again because now its considered equipment. :) Or they find a way to use a quarterstaff as a hairstyle ornament. ;) Assuming it resizes facilitates ease of play. You don't want to get into people bringing three sizes of weapons and switching them around, ordering small and large belts of giant strength and whatnot. |

| Gonbow09-13-05, 06:38 PM | @TelinArtho I probably should have mentioned when I sent you the tactics (And I've run this wrong in the past, I'm realizing), but familiars can't actually talk to their owners until they hit level 5 benefits. Until then all the owner gets is an empathic link... Which means they can transmit anger, concern, joy, etc. But not 'So and so is RIGHT HERE.' (Though if there is a LOS, they can do that by hovering around the person they are trying to pinpoint, provoking a bunch of AoO's in the process.) That might have an impact as you noted the bat pinpointing Karisia's location. |

IMO, it isn't D&D without a fistful of dice. |
| Pauper09-13-05, 07:06 PM | First off, thanks for picking up the fight, TelinArtho. Invisible Castle hates Karisia. She always hits, but can never deal damage. Bah! Who would of thought that I couldn't do 5 damage on 3d6-3 I know what you mean - I considered using a Melf's acid arrow on somebody's bow a few fights back, but was concerned that I couldn't do enough to get through the hardness and destroy it. (Though I didn't need to do anywhere near as little damage to that bow as you needed to do to my wand.) When I saw your tactic, I was sure I was sunk - I didn't provide any backup for if I didn't have the wand available. Aside: Matter Agitation would work on the wand, though it won't make a difference. I disagree. Consider... You can excite the structure of a non-psionic, nonmagical object... A wand is pretty clearly a magical object, IMO anyway. Also, Concealment doesn't help for MM. MM always hits. I wanted to hide so he couldn't see me. That could make a difference, depending on how the Spot checks go, as Gonbow notes, my familiar can't yet pinpoint opponents for me, though the empathic link does let me know when he sees an opponent, which might cut down on the number of squares to choose from when making the subsequent pinpointing roll. (If the pinpoint roll indicates a square Feck couldn't see when his empathic reaction reached me, I'd think I could safely ignore that as a possible location for Karisia to be hiding. The most recent Rules of the Game [http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20050913a] notes that 'seeing a dangerous creature close by' would count as a moderate emotional reaction.) [Edit: Just realized it's more complicated than that - if Karisia has cover to me, she can Hide; can she still hide if she has cover to me but no cover to my familiar? It's not so much a question of communication as it is a question of the rule in question - to Hide, you need cover against the opponent you're Hiding from, but in many ways a familiar and his master act as a single creature. Obligatory quote from the aforementioned Rules article re: familiars: The empathic link makes a familiar an extension of the master's being, which means that when a familiar has been somewhere or experienced something, the master has the same connection to it as the familiar has. Once a familiar has been in a room, for example, the master can use a teleport spell to travel to that room as though he had been there himself. Likewise, if the familiar has seen an object, the master can use a locate object spell to find that object as though he had seen it himself (even though the master cannot view the object through the familiar's eyes while the familiar looks at it). I'll be curious to see what the ruling ends up being.] Though I'm hoping the biggest difference is simply that I end up using fewer charges off the MM wand. :P -- Pauper |
| xanadu09-13-05, 07:15 PM | I'll vouch for the online roller hating Karisia :P |

| nightbanegod09-13-05, 08:12 PM | ok the EXP has been updated along with items used. and quite frankly im surprised nobody had a problem with the fight since it was a 4 person fight ... wow i did a good job with tactics then!! and now i dance with joy :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: :dancin: |

I used the "I will be directly above your opponent approach to the battle" I am fully aware that this is a "cop-out" way of running things. Unfortunately for Karisia - with only 3 ranks in hide - she's going to have trouble hiding from Alac regardless. Having that included meant a lot more trouble and things got real busy while I was working on the fight. In other words, I am fully aware I didn't put my "all" into the fight. It was a change that happened after I said I would take it - and if I get a chance, I'll try to fix things. I'm not too hopeful though - I'm on my 12th hour at work today and I'm sick to boot... (I was supposed to leave at my 8th hour - so this is much more than I was planning for...). |

| Huan09-13-05, 09:27 PM | Well, thank you, Luni for correcting my oversight, I very much appreciate that. Hmm, related to Polymorph, I have a question (or rather, seek confirmation): If a creature is hit with Polymorph Any Object, the duration is set by how drastic of a change it is, of course. Now, if that new form of the target creature is: -Same Kingdom (fufilling the animal/vegetable/mineral for +5) -Same Size (fufilling the size constraint for +2) -Same Type [ex: humanoid to humanoid, giant to giant, etc.] (fufilling the Class contraint for +2) So, with this +9, and that criteria fufilled, aforementioned target will permanently be of the new form, correct? I know this seems like an obvious, no-brainer, but I am asking for the record. |
| Luni09-13-05, 09:41 PM | Seems right to me. Of course, Dispel Magic and Antimagic Field will suppress/remove the spell. |

I'm not sure if those limitations are still in place or not. -ToK Fortunately, the current system prevents a method like that from happening, but if PaO is to be made a houseruled exception vs no permanent forms, then it should be made clear in the FAQ or something. |
| Gonbow09-13-05, 10:45 PM | At the moment, with the limit on spellcasting; you'd have to be level 15 for someone to cast PaO on you. Or be level 13 to get it in scroll form. Unless you pay credits, in which case you can get it in scroll form at whatever level you could afford; but you still need to CAST it somehow... Which would involve a slightly lucky roll. (1d20 + PC's caster vrs 16) |
| Pittbull09-14-05, 02:26 AM | The assumed form can’t have more Hit Dice than your caster level (or the subject’s HD, whichever is lower), to a maximum of 15 HD at 15th level. The subject needs at least 12HD to be polymorphed into a Glabrezu. So no ECL2 character will be able to do this. |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-14-05, 03:59 AM | Great Story by ICED....HERE!!! -ToK |
| Huan09-14-05, 07:14 AM | The subject needs at least 12HD to be polymorphed into a Glabrezu. So no ECL2 character will be able to do this. Yeah, that and they need to be an outsider naturally, as Polymorph cannot turn non-outsiders into outsiders. So, even though one could pay credits (which would be expensive anyway) to obtain the spell, the HD factor limits it. Ok, that's cool. Thanks, everyone, for clearing that up. |
| Tellish_of_Ket09-14-05, 02:53 PM | The subject needs at least 12HD to be polymorphed into a Glabrezu. So no ECL2 character will be able to do this. That is wrong. Thanks, everyone, for clearing that up. @Huan: See above response -ToK |

(never says anything about changing HD cap) The assumed form can’t have more Hit Dice than your caster level (or the subject’s HD, whichever is lower), to a maximum of 15 HD at 15th level. PaO suffers the same HD restriction as polymorph. |

| Pauper09-15-05, 01:08 AM | In other words, I am fully aware I didn't put my "all" into the fight. It was a change that happened after I said I would take it - and if I get a chance, I'll try to fix things. I'm not too hopeful though - I'm on my 12th hour at work today and I'm sick to boot... (I was supposed to leave at my 8th hour - so this is much more than I was planning for...). Don't sweat it, Telin - I left myself unavailable for pairings this week to give myself a chance to catch up as well, so no big rush. Hope you're feeling better soon! I would like a tweak on the fight, if only to clean up the 'magic missiles missed because of concealment' thing, as that will probably mean Alac uses fewer charges off his wand that way. If you want to go back and tighten up the Spot/Hide thing while you do that, so much the better. But you've got plenty of time for that, at least as far as I'm concerned, so feel free to use it. -- Pauper |
