| NiQil08-17-05, 04:58 PM | This thread is for questions, comments, and concerns solely regarding the pairings, quests, and campaigns for this week. Be nice. Deadline should be up in about 10 minutes. The rules of the COCO can be found here: Rules of Gladius (http://www.wizards.com/leaving.asp?url=http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=448520&origin=) Have fun, be nice and don't misbehave! Luni...check the Tavern thread. Deadline was up about an hour ago. |
| Altaris1308-17-05, 05:06 PM | :cheer: Yay Advocate Luni! :cheer:  :prays to the dice gods to avenge him this week: Gimme blood! Gimme victory! Gimme anyone who aint a one-shot kill! |
| Mind Rogue08-17-05, 05:09 PM | tick-tock ~ring~ Time's up. Pencils down. Please turn your character sheets over and pass them down and to the right. Caterane will be collecting them shortly. @Altaris I hear you buddy. I hope the dice gremlins don't slam down a one-shot kill on me either (and for a fighter type, that can be embarrasing). |
| NiQil08-17-05, 05:11 PM | tick-tock ~ring~ Time's up. Pencils down. Please turn your character sheets over and pass them down and to the right. Caterane will be collecting them shortly. @Altaris I hear you buddy. I hope the dice gremlins don't slam down a one-shot kill on me either (and for a fighter type, that can be embarrasing). @Mind Rogue As I said to Luni....read the Tavern thread. Per Cat, the deadline was over an hour ago. He says the board clocks are wrong. |
| Mind Rogue08-17-05, 05:26 PM | Perhaps I'm a little late, but both my clock and my watch read 5:25 EST right now at GMT -4. That gives me about half an hour past deadline. |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-17-05, 05:30 PM | eastern standard time is -5 not -4 |
| NiQil08-17-05, 05:32 PM | Perhaps I'm a little late, but both my clock and my watch read 5:25 EST right now at GMT -4. That gives me about half an hour past deadline. That's what I told Cat as well....this started because he pm'd me about a small error on the formatting of my characters about approx 4:20 New York time, and I replied that I would fix it right now since I still had time, and he replied right back that no, it was 20 minutes past deadline and pairings were already going. I showed him my board clock time, and he said it was wrong. I just PM'd him again, because after checking other world clocks on the web, I agree with you, that it is about a half hour after deadline, and that *he is wrong, and that he started early. |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-17-05, 05:34 PM | no it is now an hour and a half past the deadline |
| NiQil08-17-05, 05:37 PM | no it is now an hour and a half past the deadline Per this website (http://www.worldtimezones.com), deadline was about 37 minutes ago. |
| Luni08-17-05, 05:37 PM | Fine. Fine. Deadline is up. Sheesh. Only one of you had to tell me. :D |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-17-05, 05:38 PM | that clock is not affected by daylight savings time which will move the clock ahead 1 hour. |
| NiQil08-17-05, 05:42 PM | that clock is not affected by daylight savings time which will move the clock ahead 1 hour. Greenwich mean time is *never affected by Daylight savings time. It always stays the same because it is the basis for all other times in the world. |
| nightbanegod08-17-05, 05:48 PM | on a side note i should prolly be pitlording tonight WHIPPIEE |
| Mind Rogue08-17-05, 05:48 PM | ~Open's up the program Clock and switches over to Time Zone~ Hmmm, you're right. I wonder why the forum would be set up like this. However, the clocks are reading so that the deadline passed almost an hour ago. Regardless of whether it is wrong or not, however, I suggest that we actually use the forum clock so that everyone is consistant (and not everyone is aware of their time zone). |
| Maraxus08-17-05, 05:53 PM | nightbanegod: Yes, me too. *runs around in circles* ..pairings, pairings soon we'll have new pairings.. Ah, I'm so nervous. :D |
| Mind Rogue08-17-05, 05:53 PM | Greenwich mean time is *never affected by Daylight savings time. It always stays the same because it is the basis for all other times in the world. So let's see... 5:53 EST +5:00 (GMT -5) -1:00 (DST +1) = 9:53. It appears Cat was wrong. Perhaps he's using his local time, which is in the same timezone as GMT, except that it is adjusted for DST. |
| NiQil08-17-05, 05:54 PM | So let's see... 5:53 EST +5:00 (GMT -5) -1:00 (DST +1) = 9:53. It appears Cat was wrong. Perhaps he's using his local time, which is in the same timezone as GMT, except that it is adjusted for DST. That's the conclusion I came up with as well. The forum clock is correct....our fearless leader erred. But then again, he's only (mostly) human...so he's allowed every now and then...maybe...if he has the credits for it. :D |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-17-05, 05:56 PM | No I found out where I was wrong, this forum isn't even using the greenwich time zone. It is using the one after it. THe wotc options clock is just a little confusing. Your website helped me lear that up for myself. |
| Altaris1308-17-05, 05:56 PM | @Altaris I hear you buddy. I hope the dice gremlins don't slam down a one-shot kill on me either (and for a fighter type, that can be embarrasing). Come then my brother, take my hand and let us pray together. :D Hey, let's pray we fight eachother! You'd be an honorable enemy to slay! :P Fighter-type vs Fighter-type!!! |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-17-05, 06:01 PM | how long till the pairings are up? |
| Altaris1308-17-05, 06:03 PM | Probably another couple of hours. It usually takes three or four hours, IIRC, from the time Cat starts. |
| GuardianAngel08-17-05, 06:12 PM | Just fyi all my pitlord fights are up for grabs this week. Work fired two people today and some how I got the short end of the shaft on it. @ King I will try to stay up with the quest. |
| nightbanegod08-17-05, 06:18 PM | @gaurdianangle... i would like to get your fights for this week ... and assuming i get a few myself then i should be well on my way to 20° that i need for this really weird character i want to start in the arena |
| NiQil08-17-05, 06:43 PM | Woohoo postings are up....now just gotta see who takes over Guardian Angel's fights... |
| Maraxus08-17-05, 06:43 PM | I know something you don't know... ;) Well, There is a great archer fight in league 4 And Zassl has a big back to hide behind in his next fight. At least if no last corrections are made to the pairings... PS: Niqil, that was the exact same second. :) |
| Tellish_of_Ket08-17-05, 06:46 PM | Just fyi all my pitlord fights are up for grabs this week. Work fired two people today and some how I got the short end of the shaft on it. @ King I will try to stay up with the quest. I'll take your fight. You only have one. | Ellorion Saenelle08-17-05, 06:50 PM | where can i find the pairing |
| NiQil08-17-05, 06:52 PM | where can i find the pairing There will be a link posted in this thread when they are official...to see the unofficial pairing, you can visit the Character's thread...they are on page 1 but takes some scrolling to get to. |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-17-05, 06:53 PM | thanks |

This has been changed to GMT (Western European Time) because GMT is the standard setting of the world. From my perspective, the deadline has just moved one hour away so 9 PM GMT is 10 PM in Germany. And that's how it has been done all the time. If someone could make a world time table which can be added to the Rules of the Game that would be really cool. I'll give out a credit for it, 2 if it is done nicely. That way everyone can just check the table and know when he has to finish editing. I've given Vathelokai a credit for his maps in the fight. That reminds me of Druid Roxors, one of our former Elders (he probably has still the Council of Elder title  ) who always posted nice maps with colorful movements and actions in his fights. That helped a lot to visualize. I think that extra work is worth extra credits. I'll add it to the Rules later. I also want to remind you that we have a discussion about Guilds running in the House of Commons. If you have an idea please share it with us! The House of Commons is working very well and has helped me a lot in the past. Good work guys! PS: If you wonder where the pitlord avatar pic is, the Wizos are trying to upload the picture for the 3 board accounts but they encountered some problems. @Mindrogue: How do you know that I'm a teacher?? Are you in my class? :D @Ellorion: The 4th post of the characters thread. |
| Mind Rogue08-17-05, 07:02 PM | @Altaris I wish you luck. It appears that we are not dueling the other this week, nor are we pitlording for the other, so all's fair. @Tellish I'll be sure to send you Alexi's tactics as soon as I'm done. @Cat I didn't know that you where a teacher. I'm just embellishing something that I've been saying for the past two weeks. Besides, I think it would be difficult for me to be in your class, seeing as I'm an American (admittingly), and you happen to be in Germany. Also, I'll gladly set up the time tables. I'll even include both DST and general time. |
| Laughing_Dragon08-17-05, 07:02 PM | Time to see! Who I'll be loseing to this week! |
| Pitlords08-17-05, 07:04 PM | @Mindrogue: Oh. I thought you were in that recess in my mind :P |
| Faroth08-17-05, 07:33 PM | Wow, my first "free for all" and it is against two fighters xD I hope I get lucky |
| michael_noah08-17-05, 08:14 PM | @Milo Tad (erm... ?): I notice that you have some poisoned arrows, as does your opponent. However, he poisoned his arrows in the arena in an, albeit unusual, brilliant move. I'm not sure how you got the poison applied to your arrows, as it's impossible to do it outside of the arena unless you have some ability that lets you do it with no chance of failure. @Maraxus: Tactics received. @Everyone: I have to deal with 2 ranger/archers. pity me. |
| Luni08-17-05, 08:17 PM | @ToK: Tactics for Shakari sent! @Caterane: Shakari, not Shakira! |

| Maraxus08-17-05, 09:02 PM | michael_noah: Hey, one ranger/archer and one melee character that is only a little bit slower would be more of reason to pitty you, wouldn't it? :) (And now let's take a look at the figh I pitlord...) AAAAAhhhh!!! Do-Gooders! A Paladin/Fighter vs. a Paladin/Sorcerer. May they do this? Hey guys, you do this most honorable, or you fall, okay? (Just kidding, never mind) :) ...Wow, all save bonuses together they have +48. Some villages don't have that much. ;) |
| Mind Rogue08-17-05, 09:03 PM | @ToK Tactics for Alexi against Shakari sent. Hopefully it will be reasonably interesting. If it is not, I'm probably losing. @Xanadu Tactics for Zahrat sent. @NightBane Tactics recieved. |

| NiQil08-17-05, 10:38 PM | @Altaris: Tactics sent for Lothan's Fight. Wait a moment... the pitlord is Altaris or Altaris13? please confirm. The correct name is Altaris13. Altaris is his old logon that he doesn't have access to anymore. Send your tactics to Altaris13. @Cat/Pitlords becareful abbreviating names like that....I'd hate for someone's tactics to get lost because the pairings post had the wrong name on it... |
| NiQil08-17-05, 10:40 PM | @TCB - tactics sent for Sir Valkin via PM Just wondering if anyone has heard from TCB....he missed pitlording a fight for me last week....he was only one this board once all week on Saturday and that was it. I only mention it so that Cat is aware that we might have an AWOL pitlord and that this fight might need to be reassigned. And, for whomever is facing Sir Valkin.......beware of that friggin horse! LOL It's killed me twice in two weeks....if I never see it again, I could die happy LOL. |
| Faroth08-17-05, 11:04 PM | @Alataris13: Tactics sent for Lothan's Fight via PM. see u |
| Tellish_of_Ket08-17-05, 11:10 PM | Shakira vs Alexie Complete, but UNOFFICIAL (for two reasons). #1: i made a tactical error, that Shakira wanted to heal at half. #2: Shakira has an animal companion, which under normal circumstances doesn't count towards her CA. However, she now brings in a light warhorse, CR 1 and i'm just wondering if the croc's CR counts against her CA if she wants to bring in another ally. Silly me, i didn't realize it was an animal companion until right at the very end, so can she have both? I just need a quick yes or no from someone in the know. I fear i may have erred in not bringing it in. If the croc is allowed, because it doesn't count towards her CA, then i fear i must start over, but will keep the rolls though. The sooner i get confirmation the better. The result is unofficial until i post otherwise. -ToK |
| Tellish_of_Ket08-17-05, 11:18 PM | I know, posting again, waisting scroll space. Here is what i'm basing it on. Exception: Class allies Class allies are allies that come from a class feature, like a wizard's familiar, a druid or ranger animal companion, or a paladin warhorse. If a class feature specifically allows a certain cohort, then it is allowed to be used in the fight, even if the ECL or CR is higher than what the above calculations would allow. However, they still do count as allies that are brought into the fight so if you have reached or exceeded your maximum CA by using a class ally, you may not bring in any other non-class allies. Emphasis mine. I think i answered my own question, but some backup would be nice. -ToK |
| NiQil08-17-05, 11:18 PM | An ally provided by a class feature, such as an animal companion, familar, or paladin's mount, does not count against your CL for cohorts, nor does it incur penalties or give rewards for xp/gold. Class feature allies: Druids/Rangers receive an animal companion, Paladins receive a special mount, Wizards/Sorcerers receive a familiar, and some Prestige Classes allow for class allies. These class feature allies do not require a share of the character's xp or gold, nor do they count against the ally power limit (see below for details on maximum allies allowed). The exceptions are Planar Cohorts (for Thaumaturgs) and Thralls (for Thrallherds). Both these ally types count against your capacity of how many allies you can bring in; they do, however, not require a share of xp or gold, just like all class allies do. Eidt: Ack...came back to add that second part in and ya beat me to it, Tellish. Yep, you answered your own question. They can't be brought in if the ally limit has been met. If it hasn't, then they don't count as an ally and there is no penalty or bonus for having them. |
| Tellish_of_Ket08-17-05, 11:20 PM | Hmm, we seem to have a contradiction NiQil. Yours says it doesn't count towards their power limit, mine does. LOL Ok, Cat, which is it? -ToK **EDIT i know i may have answered my own question, but in your quote it does say they don't count towards the power limit...but a few paragraphs below, (mine) it seems to be very clear that it does. -ToK **EDIT, ok. fair enough. Now i just gotta fix the tactical mistake. |
| NiQil08-17-05, 11:25 PM | LOL we're editing at the same time. As I edited in to my above post, if there are no other allies, then a class-provided ally can be brought, and there are no penalties or rewards, and the CL can be whatever. If there are already other allies being brought in, then the class-provided ally counts against the CL as normal, and can't be brought in if it would put them over the CL limit. That's my take on it, anyway. |
| NiQil08-17-05, 11:32 PM | @ Maraxus Tactics for Methos sent via PM @ Luni Tactics for Kronos sent via PM @Altaris13 Tactics for Silas sent via PM @TelinArtho Tactics forthcoming. Snommelp (my partner) has already posted that he won't be back online until Friday afternoon, and then he and I will have to make connections. If push comes to shove, I will submit tactics by myself by the deadline if I cannot make connects with him, and will let him know that he will need to submit his own. Hopefully, it won't come to that, though. |
| Begferdeth08-17-05, 11:58 PM | @TCB: Ch'Ch'Ili tactics are in. Cmon, luck. He can charge me from 6 times my max power range :( @TelinArtho: If I win with my tactics, Im gonna laugh so hard... Ive just got a picture of it working in my head... Foreman spinning out of control as you slide past me :D Go Grease! |

I have received all five sets of tactics for those I'm Pitlording for this week. Nice & quick! Good job ya'll! Watch for some return PMs, though I've not read through all tactics, I can see that some will need clarification. @Cat: Isn't my 3 player free for all worth 2 credits? |
| sloisel08-18-05, 09:02 AM | Strategy for Gang Lion (Sloisel) vs Jodan Desho (Vathelokai): McJarvis sent by PM. For Sam (Snommelp) & Caspian (NiQil) vs Son o.B. (Sloisel) & Zassl (Maraxus): TelinArtho, I'll send it later after Maraxus and I are done deciding what we're going to do. Sebastien Loisel |
| sloisel08-18-05, 09:06 AM | PS: If you wonder where the pitlord avatar pic is, the Wizos are trying to upload the picture for the 3 board accounts but they encountered some problems. Thanks for the update, I was about to ask you that. Sebastien Loisel |
| Tellish_of_Ket08-18-05, 09:09 AM | @Tok: Where did you get that quote from? It needs to be changed. Class allies are always free except planar cohorts and thralls. @Luni: :D From the Rules of Gladius: Cohorts and Allies How many cohorts/allies can I have? You may have any number of cohorts or allies. However, there is a limit to how many you can have helping you in any given battle. ("helping" means anything from actually being present in the Arena or quest to fight with you, to just casting a pre-buff on you. If a cohort or ally had anything to do with your fight, it will count against the limit). The formula for allies: CA = coefficient of allies Aecli = ECL of the i'th Ally (0 if LA is '-') Acri = CR of the i'th Ally (0 if LA is not '-') CA = sum(Aecli+Acri) Example: Johnny Uncarismatic is an 10th level human cleric. He has the leadership feat, but only has leadership score of 4. If he brought in his cohort (ECL 4) rode a light warhorse (CR1) and had raised an Ogre Skeleton (CR2) and a wolf skeleton (CR1). He would have a CA=sum(4+1+2+1)=8. Maximum CA: The maximum CA a gladiator may bring into each fight is equal to his ECL-2, and no individual ally may have an Aecl>ECL-2 or an Acr>max(ECL-4,1). Explanation: What does Aecl>ECL-2 mean? If all of your Allies have an ECL (ECL=LA+HD), then you should simply add their ECLs together. The result must be at least 2 less than your own ECL. So, for example, our ECL 10 cleric could have a single ECL 8 cohort, or two ECL 3 and one ECL 2 ally, or any other combination adding up to 8 (his ECL-2). That is meant by Aecl>ECL-2. Explanation: What does Acr>max(ECL-4,1) mean? If your Allies do not have a LA, then you need to use their CR to calculate your ally limit. Your Ally's CR must be 4 lower than your ECL. This rule does not count for allies of CR 1 or lower. That is meant by Acr>max(ECL-4,1). To determine the maximum amount of allies you can bring in (CA) you have to add all allies ECL's (if they have a LA) and CR's (if they do not have a LA), and this sum must not be greater than your ECL-2. It's also mentioned again below that right at the end of the page. The only exceptions are class feature allies of Druids, Rangers, Paladins, Wizards, and Sorcerers, and any Prestige Class Ally. These allies are the only ones whose help does not cost gold and xp. They still count against the limit of how many allies you can bring into the arena (see above). Emphasis mine again. So, Shakari would/should have been allowed her croc as well as her light warhorse? -ToK |
| Vathelokai08-18-05, 09:20 AM | Jodan Desho's tactics PMed to McJarvis. @My fighters: Please PM instead of e-mail. |
| TelinArtho08-18-05, 09:25 AM | @NiQil - HEY - don't warn people about Foreman... he's just a horse after all... Anyway, I saw that Sommelp wasn't going to be online. I should have time on Monday to run it - so I will wait until I get tactics from him or by noon (my time) Monday to start. That should be plenty of leeway. As to whether or not TCB has been around - well that's why I picked up all of those fights last week... so that someone could return the favor to me later... |
| Caterane08-18-05, 09:29 AM | @Tok: No, that just hasn't been changed yet. The real rule is written in the Class Ally section of the same page. Moving there now. @Xanadu: Tactics sent. And don't you dare to roll another 20!! :D |

| Huan08-18-05, 11:02 AM | This is true, I agreed to take both of them at the same time.... I did send a PM to the Pitlords, but I suppose it did not go to the corrct name (in all honesty I think I misspelled the name, but nothing flagged it as incorrect). It is best to wait until next week unless Baelin is willing to drop out of his monster fight for this week. My apologies to Malither, King Uther, and Pitlords. |

PMs have been dispatched to respective members of this situation. I didn't get such a PM. Infact I only assigned a Quest because Uther has written it in his headline along with the Questlord. Since I haven't had a Questgoal, I assumed ...well, see for yourself in the Character Actions :D It's your choice guys. If Baelin wants to join the Quest, I'll put him there. If Uther wants a monster instead, also no problem. Just tell me what you want me to do. |

| Mind Rogue08-18-05, 12:59 PM | Some quick comments on Shakari vs Alexi. General: It's Alexi, without an 'e'. I've actually considered putting one in, but it's before the 'i' not after it. Round 5: I think you mean Shakari heals herself with a wand. Also, the DC to quick mount is 20, not 15. Also, you must have at least a move action left to attempt it. Since she healed with a wand and then stood up, she obviously has no move action left. Also, Shakari needs to draw her wand, which is another move action that provokes. Since this would come before she could heal, Shakari would be unconscious. Round 6: Shakari has to redraw her quarterstaff after healing herself with her wand. Also, Luni's tactics are incorrect. The Shillelagh is either 2d6+7 or 2d6+5/2d6+3. I'd at least like to finish in a dying state rather than dead. I also would have assumed that Alexi would have tried to pull her from her horse again rather than trying to fight a mounted opponent (since I did say to pull her from her horse in the first place). Results: Alexi's gold is capped at 300 gp because he's a first level character. By the way, nice map. |

| Tellish_of_Ket08-18-05, 01:22 PM | Some quick comments on Shakari vs Alexi. Round 5: I think you mean Shakari heals herself with a wand. I believe i said that in fight, but i could be wrong. I'll double check after this. Also, the DC to quick mount is 20, not 15. You are correct. In my haste for some reason i erred. Had no effect. The extra +1 for higher ground wouldn't have resulted in a miss. Also, you must have at least a move action left to attempt it. Since she healed with a wand and then stood up, she obviously has no move action left. Haste, makes waste. (see point above though) Also, Shakari needs to draw her wand, which is another move action that provokes. Negative. A wand is a weapon-like object that does not provoke. Round 6: Shakari has to redraw her quarterstaff after healing herself with her wand. She does not need to sheath her quarterstaff. It can easily be held in one hand. The 2 pts of dmg less would not affect the outcome. By the way, nice map. Thanks :) -ToK |
| Mind Rogue08-18-05, 02:53 PM | You are correct. In my haste for some reason i erred. Had no effect. The extra +1 for higher ground wouldn't have resulted in a miss. However, the attack Alexi makes in the following round that missed because Shakari claimed her mount as cover would have hit. This does change the fight because 1d6+3 plus 1d8 is at least her hp, meaning that at best, she is disabled and at worst, slain. Haste, makes waste. (see point above though) Negative. A wand is a weapon-like object that does not provoke. It still costs her a move action to draw it. She does not need to sheath her quarterstaff. It can easily be held in one hand. She still has to relinquish her grip with at least one hand, and it takes time to put it back on. The 2 pts of dmg less would not affect the outcome. I know, I was just commenting on it. There are problems with being a perfectionist Thanks :) -ToK Another simple option is for the cleric to carry a buckler or light shield instead of a heavy shield. The buckler leaves one hand free for spellcasting, and you don’t even lose the buckler’s shield bonus to AC when casting with that hand. The light shield doesn’t give you a free hand for spellcasting, but since you can hold an item in the same hand that holds the light shield, you could switch your weapon to that hand to free up a hand for spellcasting. (You can’t use the weapon while it’s held in the same hand as your shield, of course.) The rules don’t state what type of action is required to switch hands on a weapon, but it seems reasonable to assume that it’s the equivalent of drawing a weapon (a move action that doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity). By similar rational, I'd say it would be a free action to let go with one hand, but a move action to put it back so she can attack with it. This limits her to only one attack (which is at +7 to damage). There is a similar quote on page 30. Oh, Alexi's gold is also capped at 300. |

Since she healed with a wand and then stood up, she obviously has no move action left. Also, Shakari needs to draw her wand, which is another move action that provokes. Since this would come before she could heal, Shakari would be unconscious. The wand should still be in her hand after round 4. Round 4: Alexi hits Shakari. Shakari draws wand, uses a charge. Has her knees guide the mount. Round 5: Alexi pulls Shakari off the mount. Shakari heals, and gets up provoking the AoO, but fails on the quick mount. To be honest, it doesn't say anywhere that you can't mount a steed while prone. Those people in Hollywood do it all the time. :D |
| Luni08-18-05, 03:13 PM | Quick question! Can a digester use its Acid Spray while grappling? |
| michael_noah08-18-05, 03:35 PM | I'm relatively certain that "weilding" a two handed weapon from a one-handed grip only takes a free action. |

Those people in Hollywood do it all the time. :D Must of missed that she used it the round before, too. Perhaps she should have two charges added to the items that she spent? I also hope that if you mount your horse while prone, you're still prone on top of it. Still, DnD is not the movies. Anyways, whenever they do, they usually get dragged a while first, and then have to spend some time to clamber back on. But I don't watch many westerns. @Cat I've sent the deadline schedule to the Pitlords account. It looks pretty spiffy in its Code tags. |

| Tellish_of_Ket08-18-05, 06:22 PM | @Mind Rogue: It's a free action to put your other hand back on. The weapon is already being weilded. Technically Shakari could whopp Alexi with just one hand on the staff, albeit at the minus, but it's easier with two hands. :) I'll deduct the wand charges, my bad. To generate a new attack out of sequence would require a new roll. The rolls, at all times possible, need to stay where they were. That roll that missed the cover was the only roll in queue but orginally happened after. To add another roll into the fray would require another roll. It's a two-handed weapon sized for her and she doesn't have monkey-grip. I'm also pretty sure I saw somewhere else that said that while you can carry a two handed weapon in one hand, you can't weild it that way, and you still have to take the "draw a weapon" action to use it again. I don't know where that is, but the two FAQs for switching hands I thought would make good precedents. I'm also confused about what you're saying about the attack that missed because of cover. It was a 20 vs AC 21 (cover), but it turns out the cover was gone, so it should be 20 vs AC 17, which is a hit. Why does it not count and instead has to be replaced by this 15? There isn't anything else being taken out of the queue. EDIT: I think I understand. You're saying dump everything that happened and use the same die rolls but use the new modifiers. I believe though, that when possible, you're supposed to keep themed rolls together, meaning that the "duck for cover" and possibly some other things should be dropped. However, my attack rolls would stand, in the same order that they where applied, meaning my attack would hit. |

Switching from one hand to another hand is a draw action (As per Skip Williams). This ruling is hypocrtical yes, personally I think both should be free actions, but there you go. One involves moving a hand, the other involves dropping/throwing from one hand to the other, which is supposedly the difference. @Nightbanegod Tactics for Santos sent. |
| NiQil08-18-05, 08:37 PM | Regarding wielding double weapons with one hand... Double Weapons: Dire flails, dwarven urgroshes, gnome hooked hammers, orc double axes, quarterstaffs, and two-bladed swords are double weapons. A character can fight with both ends of a double weapon as if fighting with two weapons, but he or she incurs all the normal attack penalties associated with two-weapon combat, just as though the character were wielding a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. The character can also choose to use a double weapon two handed, attacking with only one end of it. A creature wielding a double weapon in one hand can’t use it as a double weapon—only one end of the weapon can be used in any given round. Emphasis mine. By this entry, Shakari can wield the quarterstaff with one hand and use it to strike just like any other weapon...she just can't get the second attack from the other end, nor does she get any additional strength bonus as she is not using it two-handed. |
| nightbanegod08-18-05, 09:03 PM | any of you pitlords hear of a program i thought was mentioned here that could determine LOS based on coordinates that someone made? it really would mean alot considering if LOS is established the way my fight is... its prolly gonna be a 1st round kill fight... |

| Mind Rogue08-18-05, 09:18 PM | Regarding wielding double weapons with one hand... Emphasis mine. By this entry, Shakari can wield the quarterstaff with one hand and use it to strike just like any other weapon...she just can't get the second attack from the other end, nor does she get any additional strength bonus as she is not using it two-handed. That refers to somebody like a human wielding a halfling sized quarterstaff - it means they can't take advantage of it and wield both ends with one hand. This doesn't change the fact that the quarterstaff is a two-handed weapon, ergo, Shakari needs both hands to wield it. @Gonbow Where did you find that? I tried looking at the Rules of the Game articles and couldn't find it. |
| nightbanegod08-18-05, 09:19 PM | which battle are you talking about well since i already got tactics for both parties and have already sorta started running the fight... its victor vs mini and i need to know about a LOS situation and wether or not this is considered established LOS to begin with or not... hence asking for the program that draws a line or something...i guess i should also determine the range as well |
| Altaris1308-18-05, 09:28 PM | There was a link for "Jay's sight & cover program" but it is a dead link now. Frankly, I just print out the arena map via MS Word & do hand-written turn by turn mapping. Makes for more accurate tracking of position, movement, LOS and distance. I use a straight-edge ruler to judge LOS, taking into consideration corners and whatnot. EDIT: @my players -> This is my week to run Eberron, and tonight is for last minute preparations. My fights will (should) be up during Saturday afternoon, maybe Sunday. Depends on how long this 3 person FFA will take me. I'm going to run the normal fight first. @Cat: I've not seen an answer, but I did look in the credits section. Why is it that a 1v1 fight = 1 cred, a 4 person fight = 2 creds, but a 1v1v1 fight is only 1 cred? |
| nightbanegod08-18-05, 09:30 PM | alas .... out of printer paper...i will make due with notepad ... since it has everything in a code style grid for convenience and how do you figure distance with sharply choped off squares? |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-18-05, 09:32 PM | read the last sentence. Quarterstaff: A quarterstaff is a double weapon. | nightbanegod08-18-05, 09:38 PM | @Cat: I've not seen an answer, but I did look in the credits section. Why is it that a 1v1 fight = 1 cred, a 4 person fight = 2 creds, but a 1v1v1 fight is only 1 cred? i read that you get 1° per 2 characters .... hence the 4 person FFA is 2° and on a side note that LOS issue doesnt matter ... hes not within range... ONWARD we march :fight!: |
| Altaris1308-18-05, 09:38 PM | @Nightbanegod: What do you mean "sharply chopped off squares?" |
| Mind Rogue08-18-05, 09:41 PM | read the last sentence. Quarterstaff: A quarterstaff is a double weapon. You can fight with it as if fighting with two weapons, but if you do, you incur all the normal attack penalties associated with fighting with two weapons, just as if you were using a one-handed weapon and a light weapon. A creature wielding a quarterstaff in one hand can’t use it as a double weapon—only one end of the weapon can be used in any given round. Yes, it says that if you wield it in one hand, you cannot use it as a double weapon. However, it does not say that you are ordinarily permitted to do this. In order to wield a quarterstaff with one hand, either it needs to be sized for someone smaller than you, or else you need a special feat or ability, because a quarterstaff is a two-handed weapon when sized for you. Thus, Shakari needs to use both hands to wield her staff. A halfling could not wield it at all, although he could carry it in both hands. An ogre could wield the staff in one hand (albeit at a -2 penalty), but he could not use it as a double weapon when doing so. If Shakari was wielding a halfling quarterstaff, she could wield it one handed (at a -2 penalty), but could not use it as a double weapon. However, it is a human quarterstaff, thus she needs to use both hands. |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-18-05, 09:41 PM | he's probably talking about at a diagonal, in which u would use the Pythagorean Theorum. |
| nightbanegod08-18-05, 09:42 PM | @Nightbanegod: What do you mean "sharply chopped off squares?" well i was figuring if you move diagonally its 5' then 10' alternating so when your measuring your going to have alot of squares where your only technically passing through a small corner of the square... do you determine distance by grid squares passed through or do you have a measurement of like ... well hes this far away at a 37° angle in a grid system, so on a straight line hes that far away....or something like that |
| Cerebus1308-18-05, 09:47 PM | Use this map to calculate line of sight: http://www.sebastian-sutor.de/coco/start.html It is still set up to match the old CoCo, but with some creative clicking and imagining where obstacles are it works rather well. |
| Altaris1308-18-05, 09:49 PM | Nope, you take distance as if you were actually moving. 5 & 10 ft alternating if going through corners. |

Is it possible for you to connect to the internet and then run Internet Explorer to look at websites? The AOL browser is based on Internet Explorer (I think), so if you cannot run IE normally try to find the security zone settings and mess with those. |
| Altaris1308-18-05, 10:07 PM | The AOL browser is /based/ on IE, but is (now) almost completely different. You should have no problem opening up AOL to connect, and then using IE to browse the net. |
| xanadu08-18-05, 10:19 PM | I'm also confused about what you're saying about the attack that missed because of cover. Shakira does not need an action to use the quarterstaff double handed, but she have to drop the wand to get 2 attacks in or store the wand to get in a single 2 handed attack. Shakira's crocodile would probably be in the vicinity |

However, it is a human quarterstaff, thus she needs to use both hands. I would love to see a source on this Mind Rogue....I am not familiar with what you are referring to with regards to someone not being able to use a two-ended weapon that is sized for them without taking a penalty. The entry I quoted covers all double weapons. It makes no mention of sizing whatsoever. Here is what I *think you are referring to (and please correct me if I am wrong)....and I don't think it applies the way you think it does. Weapon Size: Every weapon has a size category. This designation indicates the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed. A weapon’s size category isn’t the same as its size as an object. Instead, a weapon’s size category is keyed to the size of the intended wielder. In general, a light weapon is an object two size categories smaller than the wielder, a one-handed weapon is an object one size category smaller than the wielder, and a two-handed weapon is an object of the same size category as the wielder. Inappropriately Sized Weapons: A creature can’t make optimum use of a weapon that isn’t properly sized for it. A cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn’t proficient with the weapon a –4 nonproficiency penalty also applies. The measure of how much effort it takes to use a weapon (whether the weapon is designated as a light, one-handed, or two-handed weapon for a particular wielder) is altered by one step for each size category of difference between the wielder’s size and the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed. If a weapon’s designation would be changed to something other than light, one-handed, or two-handed by this alteration, the creature can’t wield the weapon at all. Per this entry, since the weapon is properly sized for her, being a medium weapon for a medium creature, there is no size penalty for wielding purposes. And the previous entry I quoted already shows that Shakari can wield the quarterstaff in one hand, using it as a normal weapon, but not gaining the ability to use the second end, and not gaining any additional damage bonus beyond the normal Strength modifier. Other than that, I know of no rule that pertains to what you are referring to. So if you could provide a source, that would be super. Bear in mind, that a quarterstaff, while requiring two hands, is not a classified as a two-handed weapon. It is classified as a double weapon. That is a subtle but inportant distinction. Double weapons are treated differently than two-handed weapons (such as a greataxe), even though they both require two hands to wield to full effectiveness. |

It probably should be rerun from the beginning, since Cat decreed that Luni *can have both her horse and croc and the croc has no effect on allies ECL since it is provided by a class ability. That was part of her tactics, and following both fighters tactics is only fair. Just my opinion. |
| Luni08-18-05, 11:43 PM | well i was figuring if you move diagonally its 5' then 10' alternating so when your measuring your going to have alot of squares where your only technically passing through a small corner of the square... do you determine distance by grid squares passed through or do you have a measurement of like ... well hes this far away at a 37° angle in a grid system, so on a straight line hes that far away....or something like that I use the Pythagorean Theorum. x2+y2=distance2 So, measure how many squares they are on the x axis. That becomes x. So, measure how many squares they are on the y axis. That becomes y. Add them together, and then take a squareroot of the result. And voila. You have the distance in squares. Those wolves were no match for Talari. :) |
| King Uther08-19-05, 12:08 AM | Yeah, Talari and her pet Dire Wolf destroyed the wolves. Oh yeah, and that fight is up. |
| Maraxus08-19-05, 12:45 AM | About the credits for a 3 player match: I think this is esecially complicated through this free for all, not just one and a half times as dificult and 2° would be fair ... but who am I? ...Or pitlords should be payed depending on the characters (I mean letters and stuff...) they use. In this case my fight at the moment would bring ... a lot. Round 14 is done and finally it is getting interesting. |

| Luni08-19-05, 01:09 AM | @ anyone awake at this moment to critique a fight victor vs minesbiggerinyers is up (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7008113&postcount=253) so how did i do for my first pitlording attempt? There is a saving throw for Energy Missile for half damage. Energy Missile Psychokinesis [see text] Level: Kineticist 2 Display: Auditory Manifesting Time: 1 standard action Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./ level) Target: Up to five creatures or objects; no two targets can be more than 15 ft. apart. Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: Reflex half or Fortitude half; see text Power Resistance: Yes Power Points: 3 Upon manifesting this power, you choose cold, electricity, fire, or sonic. You release a powerful missile of energy of the chosen type at your foe. The missile deals 3d6 points of damage to each creature or object you target, to the maximum of five targets. You cannot hit the same target multiple times with the same manifestation of this power. Cold: A missile of this energy type deals +1 point of damage per die. The saving throw to reduce damage from a cold missile is a Fortitude save instead of a Reflex save. Electricity: Manifesting a missile of this energy type provides a +2 bonus to the save DC and a +2 bonus on manifester level checks for the purpose of overcoming power resistance. Fire: A missile of this energy type deals +1 point of damage per die. Sonic: A missile of this energy type deals -1 point of damage per die and ignores an object’s hardness. This power’s subtype is the same as the type of energy you manifest. Augment: For every additional power point you spend, this power’s damage increases by one die (d6) and its save DC increases by 1. Also, am I reading this power right? It autohits up to 5 targets for 3d6 each, for 3pps? |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-19-05, 01:11 AM | i thought it looked pretty good, but let's just see how the two pc's will be |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-19-05, 01:14 AM | @luni the spell did enough damage that even half would have taken him down and him spending 3pps is still within his range |
| Maraxus08-19-05, 01:14 AM | Niquil: It is funny, you are both so afrait of another. You should exchange characters after the fight, if you both think, the other one is better. :) And then: The next 10 rounds could be dangerous for you, but then, you should get the upper hand again. ;) But I have one question: Pitlord ideas should not be a boon, or something it says... how serious is this? Edit: Whow, time for breakfast. :) |

| michael_noah08-19-05, 02:21 AM | Yes, it says that if you wield it in one hand, you cannot use it as a double weapon. This is correct. A quarterstaff is clearly denoted as a two-handed weapon, therefor it needs two hands (unless it is sized for a smaller person). Nothing in the quoted text changes this. |
| michael_noah08-19-05, 02:25 AM | And as for thinking that a quarterstaff is not a two handed weapon, that's wrong: Simple weapons... Two-handed weapons... Quarterstaff... look it up: here (http://d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm) |

| Pittbull08-19-05, 05:48 AM | Guts and Hagrid vs 4 Minor Xorns and a Digester is up here. (http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7008778&postcount=254) If anyone sees any mistakes, point it out to me. I've never seen Invisible Castle play favourites before. Round 5: I don't understand how Hagrid is able to hit Earth from a position (x=13/y=10, left upper corner) when the Xorn is on (x=18/y=9). He is 20 feet away! In the following rounds, I don't understand the positions at all. Round 6: Why did you leave Hagrid surrounded by 3 xorn at the end of the round. That seems to me being a little bit foolish, having only AC19 and awaiting 12 attacks. There would have been an option to withdraw or to jump over one xorn and move away. Hagrid beats them in movement and my tactic was to deliver the first hit to a xorn and then help Guts to finish the digester, not to go on attacking the Xorns. Round 7:Total defense is a standart action and it works from the point you activated it, but it wasn't Hagrid's turn in this round, the xorn's acted before, therefore Hagrid wasn't able to activate total-defense. Is there really no way to get out of the surrounding by the Xorns? I'm mean getting 3 AoOs is far better the getting 12 attacks and with a withdraw action Hagrid could get no damage and being able to help Guts in the next round. Please fix the positions or tell me how to read them. Thanks a lot. |
| Cerebus1308-19-05, 08:57 AM | @Pittbull I think Luni meant to update your location in round 5 from (13,10) to something like (16,10) [with the number listed being the upper right portion of our squares, since Guts and Hagrid take up 10' being expanded]. Being located at (16,10) would have made you surrounded by the various Xorn properly. Unfortunately this particular position chosen for Hagrid to charge to placed him directly against a 2 square wide section of wall. Thus the 3 Xorns could surround him and he could not leave his square because you cannot move through an opponents square. Looking at the other combat options available to Hagrid using a Bull Rush or Overrun would have been a better idea for him to get away from the xorn. He would provoke 3 AoOs with either choice but that would be far better than 12 attacks in the next round. In any event I obviously have a biased opinion on this subject, but having Hagrid use a Full Defense action (instead of even just attacking!) doomed him to death at the hands of 12 swings from full attacking xorn. |
| Luni08-19-05, 09:44 AM | IT is the Upper left corner Pittbull. You were supposed to be in square [15,10], using your reach to attack the Xorn. ...X.. ..HH.. .XHHX. ..WW.. x=Xorn H=Hagrid (Expanded) W= Wall Essentially, with the wall there, Hagrid was stuck. If you want me to have you would bull-rush or overrun, say so, as I am willing to make that change. I updated the fight with the proper location of Hagrid. |
| Altaris1308-19-05, 10:00 AM | Mini gets Power Resistance. The fight is therefore not over. What Uther said! :D It is only slight at this point (PR11) against Victor's +5, but it could make the difference. EDIT: Also, in round 1, Mini cannot draw a PS since she doesn't have a BAB+1. In round 2, Mini should have readied a MindThrust per tactics rather than draw a PS. Or did she spend her standard action to use Elixir of Hiding? If so, then (again) she couldn't have drawn a PS. Use readied actions for Mind Thrust on LOS as often as possible. I know I expressed Hide was important, but Mini is far from stupid. Who is going to waste time buffing when your enemy is in your face? |
| Pittbull08-19-05, 10:02 AM | If there is no other choice, I would prefer overrun, to get close to Guts to help him. |
| NiQil08-19-05, 10:06 AM | And as for thinking that a quarterstaff is not a two handed weapon, that's wrong: look it up: here (http://d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm) I'm not really sure what you are getting at with this link. It shows nothing that I have not already posted. Yes, a quarterstaff requires two hands to wield it. No, it is not a "Two-handed weapon" for classification purposes. It is a "double weapon" for classification purposes. There *is a difference. And I still have not seen a source that says there is a penalty to wielding a double weapon with one hand (other than not being able to wield both ends, as I have already quoted from the SRD). Double weapons are wielded the same way as a person wielding a long sword in one hand and a short sword in the other as far as game mechanics are concerned. And just like the guy with the swords who can choose to strike with just one of his swords and take no penalty, a person wielding a double weapon can choose to attack with one end with a single hand at no penalty. I can't find anything that says otherwise in my core books or the SRD. If you know where this is located, please, point it out so that we can all see for ourselves. |

Every weapon is either Light, One-handed, or Two-handed. Light, One-Handed, and Two-Handed Melee Weapons This designation is a measure of how much effort it takes to wield a weapon in combat. It indicates whether a melee weapon, when wielded by a character of the weapon’s size category, is considered a light weapon, a one-handed weapon, or a two-handed weapon. Light A light weapon is easier to use in one’s off hand than a one-handed weapon is, and it can be used while grappling. A light weapon is used in one hand. Add the wielder’s Strength bonus (if any) to damage rolls for melee attacks with a light weapon if it’s used in the primary hand, or one-half the wielder’s Strength bonus if it’s used in the off hand. Using two hands to wield a light weapon gives no advantage on damage; the Strength bonus applies as though the weapon were held in the wielder’s primary hand only. An unarmed strike is always considered a light weapon. One-Handed A one-handed weapon can be used in either the primary hand or the off hand. Add the wielder’s Strength bonus to damage rolls for melee attacks with a one-handed weapon if it’s used in the primary hand, or ½ his or her Strength bonus if it’s used in the off hand. If a one-handed weapon is wielded with two hands during melee combat, add 1½ times the character’s Strength bonus to damage rolls. Two-Handed Two hands are required to use a two-handed melee weapon effectively. Apply 1½ times the character’s Strength bonus to damage rolls for melee attacks with such a weapon. The quarterstaff is two-handed, as my previous post shows. It is listed under the two-handed weapon heading. That makes it a two-handed weapon. Yes, it is also a double weapon, that does not change the fact that it is a two-handed weapon. |

| Maraxus08-19-05, 11:04 AM | NiQil: Wait untill level 6 (char level 7)? If you want a horse, you should buy one before that. Usurpator: By the way: The feat, you still have to spend there. Form this fight, I would suggest mounted combat, that could have bought your mount some more rounds. Weapon focus could be it, if you want to go on with the "buffing and attack" - routine. Your attack is not the best at the moment and when you go on leveling sorcerer, this will not get better. However, if you want to rely more and more on spells as you level up, you could take Weapon Focus (ray), or spell focus. Metamagic feats are nice for sorcerers, too - but only on higher levels. |
| Mind Rogue08-19-05, 11:11 AM | No one is disputing that it it requires two hands to wield effectively. If you know where it is, please, let me know so I can see this. There may very well be a penalty...it would certainly seem logical. But I can't find one anywhere. You can't find it because it doesn't exist. You cannot attack with a double weapon in one hand, even with penalties, barring special abilities or circumstances that allow you to do so, as described in previous posts. Double-Weapon is not a classification for weapons the way one-handed, light, and two-handed are. Every manufactured weapon falls into one of these categories. The quarterstaff is a two-handed weapon, ergo it requires both hands to wield properly (or two hands for Sahuaguin mutants). It is also a double weapon, meaning that you can attack with it as though using a one-handed and a light weapon, but this does not change the fact that the staff is still a two-handed weapon and thus requires both hands to wield. Feasibly, I presume that you could construct a one-handed double weapon, but you would still have to wield it in both hands to get the second attack. |
| TelinArtho08-19-05, 11:14 AM | @NiQil - the reason why there is no mentioned penalty for using a two-handed weapon (built for your size) in one hand is because you can't be effective with it. It is too big, clumsy, heavy or unwieldy to do any damage with a single hand. In the real world you might be able to do something effective with a quarterstaff in one hand, but in the D&D world, you can't. /d |
| Luni08-19-05, 11:19 AM | Rematch is up Cerebus and Pittbull. Hagrid wins the day! |

In the real world you might be able to do something effective with a quarterstaff in one hand, but in the D&D world, you can't. /d I have a feeling this is gonna take another RAI vs RAW ruling from Cat...because if there is no rule to say it can't happen, then it should be allowed. Now understand....what you and Mind Rogue are saying makes sense. And I actually happen to agree with it. But if it's not in the RAW, then we just can't make the rule up, based on common sense. When has common sense ever entered in to D&D? LOL. But Cat, being the DM, *can make the rule up, which is why I think he will need to rule on this one. Now, if there is something in the SRD (and I have not looked yet) that specifically says that you cannot wield a two-handed weapon with one hand at all, then this all becomes moot. I'll go look and see what I can dig up. |

You wont find it because it cant be done. The best I can do is to look at PHB page 113 under double weapons. The example it brings of a human wielding a double weapon with one hand is by using a small one and thus alluding to the fact a human could not use a medium sized double weapon in one hand. |

PHB, pg. 113, under double weapons. If you read the ENTIRE paragraph, leaving nothing out, it explains why you may choose to wield a quarterstaff that is sized for you with two hands if you wish to attack with only one end, or you may hold it in two hands and attack with only one end, or you may attack with both ends as if you were wielding a one-handed weapon in your primary hand and a light weapon in your off-hand. It further exemplifies that you COULD attack with a double weapon wielded in one hand if you were a human wielding a small-sized quarterstaff. Heck, the example in and of itself (not including the other rules, and common sense) helps identify the correct circumstances. TM |
| Mind Rogue08-19-05, 11:39 AM | Two-Handed:Two hands are required to use a two-handed melee weapon effectively. Now I thought this was pretty clear in saying that you can't use a two-handed weapon in only one hand, although perhaps the word "effectively" is tripping you up, causing you to believe that you should be able to do so with some monster penalty. However, it still says you need both hands to use it, and nowhere else does it say that you can. |

However, it still says you need both hands to use it, and nowhere else does it say that you can. Again....bear in mind here that I agree with you Mind Rogue. I am playing devil's advocate here. The word effectively is exactly my point of contention. By phrasing in that way, it implies that it does *not require two hands to wield a two-handed weapon ineffectively. Unfortunately, the SRD is not a great reference for this particular point of contention, as much of this material is not in there. I'll pour through my PHB when I get home tonight. But what I am looking for is something that says you cannot wield a two-handed weapon in one hand ever. Or, lacking that, something more definitive than what we have all been quoting so far, which has us making inferences and implications and such. I'm a very RAW, rules-lawyery kinda a guy, so I like to have things in black and white whenever possible. I agree that at the very minimum, there should be some sort of penalty for doing this, and most likely it should not be allowed at all. But I am looking for something that says so. |
| xanadu08-19-05, 12:00 PM | Again....bear in mind here that I agree with you Mind Rogue. I am playing devil's advocate here. You keep playing devil's advocate when the issue is crystal clear and your bound to get smited :D |
| NiQil08-19-05, 12:05 PM | You keep playing devil's advocate when the issue is crystal clear and your bound to get smited :D Well, seeing as you apparantly are not the only one to share this opinion, I guess I'll just start keeping my thoughts to myself. Far be it for me to bring a different viewpoint to the table for discussion. |
| xanadu08-19-05, 12:20 PM | NiQil, nobody is saying to keep your thoughts to yourself or not bring out alternative viewpoints. In fact the opposite; this is the place for thoughts to be expressed. On this issue, however, it seems that everyone commenting aside from NiQil has brought up pretty convincing reasons why a 1 handed quarterstaff wont fly. It would seem to be the onus is on the one-hander to validate his claim. It is not fair to say "in the SRD it doesn't say you cant" because it is very hard to prove a negative. The SRD is concerened with things you can do and since nowhere in the SRD does it say you can wield a quarterstaff 1 handed and there are numerous inferences you cant, I think the issue is clear. This is not to say the discussion hasn't been valuable - I am sure there were people unaware of this - but now we are all the wiser. |
| Tellish_of_Ket08-19-05, 12:30 PM | Anyone heard from Malither lately? @Malither, still waiting for your tactics. The talk about the quarterstaff is a moot point (unless you guys are doing it for semantics), because at no time did Shakari use only one hand to attack with it. -ToK |
| King Uther08-19-05, 12:40 PM | Malither said he would be busy this weekend, and.... he is trying not to fight the monster. He was supposed to go on a quest with Virgo, but it didn't get included in the pairings result. I am still waiting on a response from all members as to what is going on. |

I think it was fortunate that even though it lasted 25 rounds, it stayed exciting to the very end. I enjoy reading and fightin an evenly matched fight better than a lopsided one. Besides, there's no such thing as luck in Maeril's book. Obviously this was a sign from Heironeous. I enjoy reading and fightin an evenly matched fight better than a lopsided one. Besides, there's no such thing as luck in Maeril's book. Obviously this was a sign from Heironeous. Possibly, didn't see any obvious ones myself. There were a couple of minor math errors, but nothing that would affect the outcome of the fight. The only other one I noticed was allowing Inspiration to move and to attack while at 0 HP, when the horse should have been unconscious at that point. But again, since I ended winning in the end, it would not affect the outcome, since it would have just quickened the hand-to-hand stuff at the end. I must say, with the tactics you were given by both combatants, you did an amazing job with that fight. You made good choices when situations arose that were not covered in tactics (who would have thought a mounted rider would HIDE?!?!), and I think you kept to each of our themes for combat extremely well. I might have done a few small individual things differently if I had run it, but overall I have absolutely no complaints. And on a side note....I'm off the schnide!!! I finally beat a friggin warhorse LOL. Took some planning, some luck, and a change of opponent <glares at Foreman>, but it finally happened! |
| Gonbow08-19-05, 01:31 PM | @Pauper Tactics recieved, running my fight now. Should be up later today. |
| Usurpator08-19-05, 01:33 PM | Usurpator: By the way: The feat, you still have to spend there. I thought choosing feats was not mandatory (unlike attributing skill points) and you could 'hoard' them until the time is right. For example, if you have Str 12 and plan to make it 13 at 4th lvl, you could save your 3rd lvl feat to take Power Attack at 4th. At this moment I really haven't a clue what feat to choose. Maeril is continuing as Sorcerer, so the buffing and attack is getting less attractive as he gains more levels. Metamagic feats are nice, but Maeril will need to gain a lot of levels to use them. Thinking of taking Leadership at 6th. The following levels will be hard anyway, since this combination of classes doesn't start to come into its own until it hits 8th lvl or so. I thought about Mounted Combat, but his current Ride skill is about as high as its gonna get I'm afraid, with Ride being cross-class for Sorcerers. |
| TelinArtho08-19-05, 01:35 PM | Later on, instead of Sir Valkin leaving Foreman aside for a fight, he's going to challenge you and just send Foreman... :) If you think I'm taunting you, you're right... |
| NiQil08-19-05, 01:36 PM | I can't quote the SRD, as this is something not covered in there, so I'll have to doublecheck a PHB when I get home, but I am pretty sure that feats, like skill points, must be used at the level they are attained. |
| TelinArtho08-19-05, 01:39 PM | I thought choosing feats was not mandatory (unlike attributing skill points) and you could 'hoard' them until the time is right. For example, if you have Str 12 and plan to make it 13 at 4th lvl, you could save your 3rd lvl feat to take Power Attack at 4th. You have to take feats at the level that they were granted. So, if you did not qualify for Power Attack at 3rd, but you did at 4th - you could not use a feat gained at 3rd level for that feat. As to whether or not they are "mandatory" - I don't know where you got this idea from. Feats, skills, special abilities that have choices - all must be chosen at their respective times. The CoCo does allow some switching of feats or skill points after the fact, but those are (and should be) exceptions - not the commonplace. |
| NiQil08-19-05, 01:41 PM | Later on, instead of Sir Valkin leaving Foreman aside for a fight, he's going to challenge you and just send Foreman... :) If you think I'm taunting you, you're right... Foreman<---earning his own reputation points at this point LOL....maybe we should enter him as a combatant in the ECL 3 league  |

I remember reading it somewhere in a WOTC book, but that was some time ago, probably 3.0 even. I have no problem with spending my feat now. Just didn't know what to do with it. Didn't even much like Improved Init or Iron Will even, but hey, what do you have to do if you're not going into archery, mounted combat, skill use, item creation etc. etc. Good choices are few... |
| Maraxus08-19-05, 02:42 PM | @NiQil + Usurpator: Thanks for the nice words. :) Niqil: The horse was really not thak much of a problem, it was only able to hit you on a natural 20. - Maeril did not much better, but his tactic to wait for your force screen to go down plus his better speed worked quite well. When the horse was at 0hp, by the way, it was disabled, but then Maeril healed it with lay on hands (taking the poor horse as cover to avoid AoO - funny Situation), and than the horst was back at 6 hp and able to move at double speed away (to get out of Methos charce distance.) Usurpator: The Ray of enfeeblement was lucky, but that was about everything. In the last 5 rounds you needed 2 rolled 10s - but got only 1. Your opponent needed 3 times the 13 and got them. About feats: I read that you can take feats without meating the requirements. That was in the context of barbariens, that can only power attack in rage or druids that take some feats for their wildshape forms - wouldn't that be possible for that character, too? PS: And now, I'm waiting for my characters to fight! :) |
| Maraxus08-19-05, 03:34 PM | On another subject: Amion Dar'ath's tactic is probably not the best against The First Horseman, WAR. ...Hold Person does not work on Giants |
| Luni08-19-05, 03:49 PM | The fight between Kronos and YOriko is up Here. (http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7013218&postcount=257) @Kaigan and Iced: I might have the fight up by tomorrow morning. If not, you have to wait until Monday. |
| nightbanegod08-19-05, 03:55 PM | What Uther said! I know I expressed Hide was important, but Mini is far from stupid. Who is going to waste time buffing when your enemy is in your face? on this note and that mini does get power resistance roll i will edit the fight from round 2 ... using same rolls when appropriate as listed under the notes on white castle |
| Mind Rogue08-19-05, 04:42 PM | Amion Dar'ath (Waywreth) vs. War, the First Horseman (Nightbanegod) is up. Hmmm. That's a good point. Perhaps I'll go back and change that, although all it does is make the fight go by faster. In any event, using Hold Person/CDG against a mounted opponent is not generally a good tactic since mounts shy away from combat when not directed. and if they didn't, he would still suffer an AoO when he tried to CdG. Also, I suggest Amion either gets quickdraw or consideres starting with his shield unlimbered. It's kind of hard to CdG effectively if you have to wait an extra turn to do it. |
| Mind Rogue08-19-05, 05:09 PM | @Madner (and Uther) Tactics recieved. I'll run the fight at my leisure. If you're lucky, it will be done tonight, but it probably will be done tomorrow. @Telish of Ket I still don't understand why Alexi's game-changing attack still misses in round 6 after Luni's cover is removed (besides that you haven't gotten around to editing the fight). @Waywreth and NiQil Judging from the HoldPerson:Giant mistake, I'll edit the fight later, reserving the Hold Person slot for healing (since NiQil didn't even say to use scrolls of spiritual weapon). However, I've been on this for a while, so I'm going to take a break first. |
| Snommelp08-19-05, 05:22 PM | I'm back! My flight was delayed, but I've PMed NiQil, so hopefully our tactics will be in soon. |

| Maraxus08-19-05, 06:10 PM | At least he should have the 50% (75% with militarry sattle) chance to stay in sattle, that you also have when falling unconcious. However, since you don't drop prone when hold, I would say that you don't drop from a horse, too. |
| SoulLord08-19-05, 06:27 PM | At least he should have the 50% (75% with militarry sattle) chance to stay in sattle, that you also have when falling unconcious. However, since you don't drop prone when hold, I would say that you don't drop from a horse, too. but you do drop when flying it would be reasonable to assume that a person under the effects of hold person has a good chance of falling from his mount. I would say the same percentages would apply as when falling unconcious. |
| nightbanegod08-19-05, 06:27 PM | Yay the horseman redeems himself !!! and i second maraxus' opinion .. since you just cant move ... but your not unconsious then technically i would be frozen still and unable to actually be limp and fall off *edit* where do i find a chart that determines proximity on listen checks... like how close based on success? |
| Ellorion Saenelle08-19-05, 07:01 PM | check the rules of gladius thread. |
| nightbanegod08-19-05, 07:41 PM | ok ok .. heres victor vs mini 2nd edition (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7008113&postcount=253 ) |
| Mind Rogue08-19-05, 07:58 PM | I've updated the Amion/First Horseman fight in light of the fact that Hold Person doesn't work on giants. NiQil: note that because the battle ended sooner do to you not being paralyzed, you didn't consume your SoF potion. Also, I missed a healing potion you downed the first time. |
| NiQil08-19-05, 09:05 PM | Umm....Rogue....I hate to make ya look bad here....but neither Amion nor The First Horsemen are my characters. Ya might wanna doublecheck the roster LOL. |
| nightbanegod08-19-05, 09:16 PM | @mind rogue :P Horseman is mine!!!!! :P ... coolness about that shield of faith potion... save me some GP and yeah im going to get the improved Disarm next so it will all be good later and ill strip em bare!! i just needed his AC lower and figured that was a good place to start... but ur right on that trip attempt.. prone = sucks-to-be-you |
| NiQil08-19-05, 10:28 PM | @TelinArtho Tactics for Caspian & Sam sent via PM |

| NiQil08-19-05, 10:58 PM | Don't push it buddy... Yeah....yer all talk....just because you have Foreman backing you up LOLOL |
| nightbanegod08-19-05, 11:08 PM | heh ill take foreman on with my new and improved Horseman!!! |
| TelinArtho08-20-05, 01:32 AM | Well, my 2v2 fight is up. I did my first time linking the rolls to the fight. Just as a point, because I don't know if its bad form - if I rolled an attack roll, I tried to roll a damage one with it as well. However, unless the attack was a hit, I ignored the damage roll. If this is bad form, I will just not do it in the future. Sam (Snommelp) & Caspian (NiQil) vs Son o.B. (Sloisel) & Zassl (Maraxus) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7017724 ) Hopefully all of the links work... |
| Gonbow08-20-05, 02:08 AM | Alac vrs Coralias is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7018007&postcount=261). I would appreciate it if Caterane or one of our few Elders could take a look at round 5 and give me a determination, after which I will edit the post appropriately. |

P.S. No errors in the quick glance I took. |
| King Uther08-20-05, 02:50 AM | @ Gonbow Tactics have to be interpreted. If they literally can't be followed because they were too specific in an area, then deviations will occur. If you can get bak to the tactics, then awesome. But tactics as written literally are not ironclad. Just look as the Virgo vs Mer-Man fight. Cat wrote tactics, that because of his wording, basically gave me the fight. But we discussed it and decided an interpretation was more fair. And as the Pitlord, it is your decision that matters. If you feel it is fair to deviate, then it is fair. If a gladiator complains about it, you don't have to defend yourself. Pitlording is hard sometimes. Edit: You cannot make good strategies out of nothing though. Deviating should be done logically and fairly. |

| NiQil08-20-05, 03:19 AM | I don't see anything wrong from my side. Of course, my opponents may feel differently, but from where I stand it's all good. I agree....as far as I can tell I see no errors, system-wise. Tactic-wise, I didn't look, nor would I presume to see the intent in another's tactics. And for the record, there was a reason I didn't have a plan for being alone with the half-giant. It was sort of hinted at when I said I wanted to put myself between the SOB and the grapplers in our tactics. I *knew one of us was going to get smacked hard with that deep crystal weapon. I also knew that with his high hit points and grappling ability, Sam had a better chance to win 1 on 2 than I did. Had the situation been reversed, and Sam had taken that shot that killed me in one blow, I don't think I would have fared near as well. Not so much taking one for the team as playing the odds, I guess. |
| Maraxus08-20-05, 04:04 AM | Right, fight is okay. With his successfull grapples, SoB. had better damaged Sam, but it makes no diffrence. Plan was, that when the dwarf grapples me, my big partner smacks him hard ... but somehow that one was diversionary tacticed by Caspian. :) Luck wasn't on our side in this fight. |
| Altaris1308-20-05, 04:05 AM | And now for my fight for Aeryn? ;) |
| Pauper08-20-05, 05:14 AM | After that, if I act before she does, and am still adjacent to her, ready an action to move when she moves - this should allow me to keep her within my threatened area and get AoOs when she tries to fire. If she acts before I do (and thus has moved away and fired at me before I've had a chance to ready), then ready my next action to move when she tries to shoot, accomplishing the same thing. This doesn't work if they move away then shoot, because they get two move action before you readied action triggers, which can only move you 30' max. Actually, it would have worked if I hadn't edited out the most important part - try this text on for size instead (change in italics): If she acts before I do (and thus has moved away and fired at me before I've had a chance to ready), then move adjacent to her and then ready my next action to move when she tries to shoot, accomplishing the same thing. (Edit: And in fact now, looking at the tactics, I see that wouldn't have worked, either, as she had no intention of firing at me while I was within a move action, which means my readied action would have been wasted unless I'd specified that I was readying the latter action to move when she moved, not when she fired. Ah, well, it seemed perfectly clear when I wrote it... ;) Not to mention that I also wrote 'Once we're in melee' when I really should have specified, 'once she pulls out her longsword' - which would have been much clearer in retrospect.) Of course I now realize I should have gone with my initial tactical idea, which was to use my acid arrow on her bow - then if that didn't break it, charge and sunder it, as she gets no AoOs while holding the bow in her hands. Just shows what happens when you assume... :) Nicely pitlorded fight, Gonbow. I just wish I could shake the feeling that sometimes the CoCo is more of a test of communications skills rather than character-building skills. -- Pauper |
| KerlanRayne08-20-05, 05:14 AM | @xanadu: Please post items used and XP / GP awards. |
| Pitlords08-20-05, 05:27 AM | @Xanadu: There's no way Zubair could've attacked - lest of all fullattacked - Indri on round 1. He was at the rear wall. Indri wins and receives 1900xp/2692gc (2400xp/3400gc -25% +4%) Zubair loses and receives 967xp/1369gc (800xp/1133gc -4% +25%) |
| sloisel08-20-05, 07:01 AM | @TelinArtho: Good fight, but there's an important error. Powerful Build: The physical stature of half-giants lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category larger. Whenever a half-giant is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the half-giant is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. A half-giant is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. In "Grapple", under "Special Attacks", we see that Step 1 Attack of Opportunity. You provoke an attack of opportunity from the target you are trying to grapple. If the attack of opportunity deals damage, the grapple attempt fails. (Certain monsters do not provoke attacks of opportunity when they attempt to grapple, nor do characters with the Improved Grapple feat.) If the attack of opportunity misses or fails to deal damage, proceed to Step 2. Step 2 Grab. You make a melee touch attack to grab the target. If you fail to hit the target, the grapple attempt fails. If you succeed, proceed to Step 3. Step 3 Hold. Make an opposed grapple check as a free action. If you succeed, you and your target are now grappling, and you deal damage to the target as if with an unarmed strike. If you lose, you fail to start the grapple. You automatically lose an attempt to hold if the target is two or more size categories larger than you are. In case of a tie, the combatant with the higher grapple check modifier wins. If this is a tie, roll again to break the tie. And so the monk can't grapple me while I'm Large, since I count as Huge, and he can't grapple huge. That would make a Huge difference (pun, pun) from round 6 on, since all these grapple attacks would have to be normal attacks, and I would get to attack much more often. |
| TelinArtho08-20-05, 08:16 AM | Sloisel - yup that does make quite a difference... I'll try to get in some revisions during the day today, else it will be tonight. If others have comments - make them between now and then. /d |
| Luni08-20-05, 08:44 AM | @Caterane: Yoriko won her fight, but you marked her down with a loss on the Character page. @Kaigan and Iced: Fight will be up on Monday, for sure. @NiQil: Write a real good story and send it to me on Monday. Polish it up. Make it look like Huan wrote it. |
| Pitlords08-20-05, 09:04 AM | No, I didn't. EDIT: Wait, now I see. The outcome of Yoriko vs Tlanth changed last week. There's no way I can keep track of such changes unless you PM me. There's now also no way I can recalculate powerratings in such a case. The Pitlord should PM me, at least the winner should have an interest in preserving his powerrating. EDIT: Coincidently, I could recalculate it becuase Tlanth had only 1 fight so he was at 1000 last week. I am not going to do this in the future as this is unnecessary extra work that can be avoided by sending me a PM. |
| Luni08-20-05, 09:27 AM | Well, I didn't know about last weeks. Calculating power ratings sounds like hard work, Caterane. |
| Caterane08-20-05, 09:32 AM | @Luni: Cost me 10 minutes of my life!! @Xanadu: Druid Blightlord is not affected by entangle. |
| Mind Rogue08-20-05, 10:21 AM | No, I didn't. EDIT: Wait, now I see. The outcome of Yoriko vs Tlanth changed last week. There's no way I can keep track of such changes unless you PM me. I believe Yoriko won the first time around. Also, after the pitlord posted it on the forum I didn't even think that you might still need a PM. Sorry though. |
| TelinArtho08-20-05, 10:29 AM | I'm sorry to say Cat that Tlanth never won his fight. I even made mention of it in the FotW thread last week that it was wrong... |
| Caterane08-20-05, 10:41 AM | It's not that bad. I just can't always read every post here so a PM definately helps. :) |
| xanadu08-20-05, 11:04 AM |  Was tired last night, just got the fight in skeletal form for people to check for errors. Blightlord I think is still eligible for entaglement. Woodland stride does not help vs. magically manipulated environments. If you look at the arena map you'll see that Zubair did have LOS to Indri, albeit Indri had cover provided by the column, so Zubair can attack with Indri having a +4 cover bonus. I placed Indri in the middle because Cat didn't specify a corner (which was probably a good thing because the north corner has no cover). I haven't played with mounts much in real life, but I was under the impression that one could make a full ranged attack while the mount is moving. I saw this somehwere on page 157 in the PHB. Thanks for calculating the rewards, I was getting to it :D |
| Caterane08-20-05, 11:16 AM | Ok. But Zubair then takes a -2 penalty if his mount is moving and Indri can use ride cover for an additional +4. Still hits though so no need to change it. |
| Gonbow08-20-05, 11:22 AM | Of course I now realize I should have gone with my initial tactical idea, which was to use my acid arrow on her bow - then if that didn't break it, charge and sunder it, as she gets no AoOs while holding the bow in her hands. I just wish I could shake the feeling that sometimes the CoCo is more of a test of communications skills rather than character-building skills. -- Pauper Sundering certainly would have been an original tactic, I would have liked to see how it would turn out. That said, I'm going to rule that Coralias won this fight, slight shift of tactics should be acceptable. I'm going to alter the post now. Thanks for the comments, Uther, Pauper. |
| Snommelp08-20-05, 12:20 PM | Sloisel - yup that does make quite a difference... I'll try to get in some revisions during the day today, else it will be tonight. If others have comments - make them between now and then. /d Heh heh... oops  It seems my character has a higher wisdom modifier than me. All I can think to add to this new situation is that, because of Sam's high Wisdom, he'd probably notice fairly quickly that grappling wasn't going to work (your discretion) and switch to regular punching. I believe the advantage is still the dwarf's. |
| sloisel08-20-05, 03:14 PM | Heh heh... oops  ... he'd probably notice fairly quickly that grappling wasn't going to work Yeah, I wasn't sure myself until I looked it up. Sebastien Loisel |
| TelinArtho08-20-05, 04:16 PM | @ my gladiators... the fight has been edited. Didn't change much except that Sam was able to take out Son of Buttmunch a few rounds faster. Frankly, Son of Buttmunch's AC leaves a lot to be desired... even a monk with a flurry of +3/+3 can do some nasty damage... In any case, the result didn't change. |
| Snommelp08-20-05, 04:20 PM | Thanks for going through with that, TelinArtho. Even if the result didn't change, it's nice to have things squared away. Especially since my character won almost single-handedly :D I kid, NiQil. Caspian did a good job distracting the giant to keep Sam from getting double teamed. ;) |

The buffs included +6 AC but I ran out of buffing time. Maybe I should've specified buffing between the opponents, but I didn't expect two separate fights like this. Also, I glanced at the monk's rolls and it seems that even at AC 19 instead of 13, he would still hit me twice out of three times. Sebastien Loisel |
| TelinArtho08-20-05, 07:57 PM | That is true - the rolls were very hot/cold - either above 15 or below 8 for the most part. But in general, I think that AC13 is going to hurt you when you are expanded, much more than that extra d6 on your sword. Just a thought to consider. |
| Mind Rogue08-20-05, 09:10 PM | Nyatar vs Avatar of Life is up. Man I hate it when someone with 6 round buffs goes up against a sniper. Both of your tactics kind of fell apart, so better luck next time. |
| King Uther08-20-05, 11:17 PM | I figured he wouldn't just try and snipe me. He had a little more available to him, so I tried to cover as many things as possible. In my obscuring mist stategy, I didn't want to move, but wait for him to come and get me. |
| Pitlords08-21-05, 05:40 AM | @MindRogue: From the FAQ: Apply boni and penalties for bringing in allies after the cap (that means, you can gain more than your cap by fighting against opponoments with allies). That means Nyatar also gains 375 gp. |
| NiQil08-21-05, 06:31 AM | @MindRogue: From the FAQ: That means Nyatar also gains 375 gp. @Pitlords In a team fight that I had Kronos in with Joden vs Sir Valkin and Victor last week, our losing xp/gold was give as 337.5 XP and only 300 gp. Since the rule you just posted was in effect at that time (at least, I am assuming this is not something new), can we have Mind Rogue go back and edit the rewards to reflect the proper 337.5 gp as well due to Sir Valkin's ally Foreman? |
| Caterane08-21-05, 07:02 AM | Sure. Times are hard so every nickle counts :D PS: Pitlords is me ;) |
| madner08-21-05, 09:50 AM | Nyatar vs Avatar of Life is up. Man I hate it when someone with 6 round buffs goes up against a sniper. Both of your tactics kind of fell apart, so better luck next time. Well I didn't intend to snipe, but rather shoot, cast spell, cast spell and join melee, as I assumed he would get both protections up. :D Probalby my instructions were not clear enough. However my AC with shield is 23 versus balbanes and 22 versus his mighty horse. :D |
| Mind Rogue08-21-05, 10:20 AM | @MindRogue: From the FAQ: That means Nyatar also gains 375 gp. Hmmm, that means I've been doing it wrong for a while. I thought the cap applied to the ally bonus too. I'm going to go and fix these fights right now. EDIT: I've fixed Amion vs War, Nyatar, vs Balbanes, and the team fight from last week. If I've run any other fights involving a mount, let me know and I'll fix the rewards. Also, apparently I got Nyatar's AC wrong, so I'll have to fix some things in the very near future. |
| Mind Rogue08-21-05, 10:44 AM | Okay, I've edited Nyatar vs Balbanes, Avatar of Life, and apparently the AC made a difference, even though it only blocked one attack. Sadly, Nyatar apparently has a hidden critical inside of him, which is enough to make the Avatar of Life less living then he was shortly before. |

Sadly, Nyatar apparently has a hidden critical inside of him, which is enough to make the Avatar of Life less living then he was shortly before. Just a slight problem: Nyatar draws his ranseur and attacks Balbanes: [20!]: [19] + 3= 22 [ critical hit] for [2 +3] + [1 +3] + 6 = 17. This adds up as 15 damage. And since Balbanes is at 15 hp, this could make a critical difference. Fortunately, Ranseur's deal x3 damage on a critical, and not x2 |

Fortunately, Ranseur's deal x3 damage on a critical, and not x2 That's math error is kind of embarrassing. Still, at least now I have something else to throw Nyatar into prison for. And I've fixed the error, which doesn't change the fight any. |

| Mind Rogue08-21-05, 01:14 PM | Yes, but the sad thing is I'm an engineering major and a math minor, so you would think I'd be above little mistakes like that. I guess I have to get them out of my system over the next few years before I graduate and move into the workforce, or someone could really get hurt. Oh, and Madner, I've fully audited Nyatar and dropped him over by the slammer, so you probably want to fix some things and clear his name. |
| Altaris1308-21-05, 02:52 PM | ... is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7028543&postcount=265). Please review for errors. |
| Altaris1308-21-05, 02:58 PM | ... is going to drive me insane. :weep: Tactics are all buggy & have broke down even before the fight has begun. What is a pitlord to do? If I adjudicate, my initial reaction is specifically counter to tactics as written. |
| Vathelokai08-21-05, 03:13 PM | PM the players and ask them what to do. Try to leave it vague. Or just hope that you don't have to rerun the fight. Good luck with that though... |
| Altaris1308-21-05, 04:15 PM | PM the players and ask them what to do. Try to leave it vague. Or just hope that you don't have to rerun the fight. Good luck with that though... I'll take my chances. I've started the fight and I'll see how things go. If circumstances & die rolls don't dictate tactical responses, then I'll hold off on finishing & PM those involved. |
| Mind Rogue08-21-05, 04:38 PM | Apparently Xanandu posted Omo-Na vs Zahrat. Brief comments: I thought for a second that Omo-Na was a half-giant, which would give him the commensurate bonus of being able to break out of pesky ensnaring weeds easier. Alas I was wrong. Also, Entangle carries a -4 penalty to ranged combat: -2 on attacks and another -2 for the dexterity penalty. However, that arrow of Omo-Na's still lodges itself in Zahrat anyway, so nothing changes. Finally, I'm a little curious why Zahrat is making a reflex save in round 2, unless she got caught in the area of her own Entangle spell. |
| LLMadCow08-21-05, 05:01 PM | Apparently Xanandu posted Omo-Na vs Zahrat. Yes, it is up. I just have a few problems of note. In round 2, Omo-Na should have been manifesting Force Screen from memory (Concentration DC 16, and the roll of 13 is used, so 13 + 8 = 21, success. Lasts until the end of Round 42). This results in the critical in Round 6 not being a critical. Also, since not engaged in melee, Omo-Na should have slugged at least 1 CLW somewhere in there. LL |

LL Force Screen isn't going to save you against Produce Flame since shield bonuses, even from Force Screen, don't protect against touch attacks. And if you want to spend your healing potion to not change the fight, that's your perogative. Xanandu, you should change the fight (not that I expect it to do anything if he justs stands there and drinks potions). |
| sloisel08-21-05, 05:12 PM | I thought for a second that Omo-Na was a half-giant, which would give him the commensurate bonus of being able to break out of pesky ensnaring weeds easier. How does being a half-giant help getting out of entangle? Sebastien Loisel |
| Laughing_Dragon08-21-05, 05:14 PM | I hope my tactics were not the ones that gave you trouble, I tried to make them as simple as posible. Buff, attack, attack, attack, kill, rebuff, Attack, ect... |
| Mind Rogue08-21-05, 05:23 PM | How does being a half-giant help getting out of entangle? Sebastien Loisel +4 racial on strength checks. It doesn't help you to avoid it in the first place, but it at least helps you break free. |
| Faroth08-21-05, 05:30 PM | @Altaris13: Yup, My fight is kind of complicated. Remember what i wrote, if a fight doesn't begin until round 10 I cast scorching ray inn a vissible oponent, and I think it would be the hal-giant cause he's where I was expecting (my initial spot) Any problem, send a PM, or post it. Edit: Finish the fight please xD |
| sloisel08-21-05, 06:01 PM | +4 racial on strength checks. It doesn't help you to avoid it in the first place, but it at least helps you break free. What!? Where did you see that? If that's true I had no idea. I just checked the half-giant description and didn't see it. Sebastien Loisel |
| Mind Rogue08-21-05, 06:12 PM | hmmm, I guess you're right. I guess they only count on opposed checks. If they counted on static ones, they would also get the bonus on checks to break things. |
| King Uther08-21-05, 07:03 PM | I didn't get a PM back, but I am requesting a re-run on Nyater vs Balbanes. My tactics were only followed until it was convenient. I charged him for mele when keeping my distance was specified as the main tactic. I entangled him twice, when my tactics say do it 3 times. Many thing in my tactics were ignored, when in fact my strategy negated any advantage he had on me. He could not critical me with a ranseur because he would never get to melee range. @ MindRogue Nothing against you, it's just that Balbanes hands down would have won this battle. His strategy didn't counter any attack strategy I had, and my horse should have been behind cover as I specified in my tactics so his first shot should be impossible. PM me if you disagree with any of this. |
| Altaris1308-21-05, 07:22 PM | @LaughingDragon: :D Your tactics were definately not the problem. @Faroth: I know, and that was the saving grace of the tactics. I chose not to scorching ray the half-giant since you had both enemies very close and because your target was not taking out his target (he was trying to take you out.) I ran the fight as I thought would be appropriate to all parties involved. Faroth, I opted to target your assigned target following round 9 because I thought it the best chance for you to get a Winner's Share. It just would've been funny for you to attack Kregor while he and Silas team up on you. The fight is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7028675&postcount=266) I am almost done with cleaning it up. If any parties what a rerun, I'll be happy to do so. It was a very screwey situation and it took me 10 hours to run it (had a wife & a five-year old pestering me all day.) Is this correct: If A vs B vs C is the fight & A wins against both targets, he gets 2 winners shares, neither B & nor C took out their target so they both get single loser shares? Or do they both get double-loser shares? |
| Gonbow08-21-05, 07:27 PM | Is this correct: If A vs B vs C is the fight & A wins against both targets, he gets 2 winners shares, neither B & nor C took out their target so they both get single loser shares? Or do they both get double-loser shares? B and C get single loser awards, and A gets winner awards for each target he personally defeats individually (so double, yes). |
| Altaris1308-21-05, 07:30 PM | K, thanks Gonbow! |

Is this correct: If A vs B vs C is the fight & A wins against both targets, he gets 2 winners shares, neither B & nor C took out their target so they both get single loser shares? Or do they both get double-loser shares? One round that *could affect the outcome. In round 10, Silas was waiting with a readied action to fire on LOS of Lothan. He cast scorching ray from a scroll. Because of my readied action, in the split second that it takes for him to become visible before the scorching ray goes off, my attacks will commence. Readied actions always go first. Since I did connect for 8 damage, I am pretty sure that Lothan will need a DC 18 Concentration check to complete the spell from the scroll. If that check is failed, then the 14 points of damage I took would never happen, meaning that at the end facing Kregor, I would be able to survive his melee hit and probably kill him. Also, in the arena, I do not believe there is any flat-footedness once round 2 has commenced, since all parties would have acted at that point. My AC vs the touch attack should have been 15. Makes no difference, but I felt I should point it out. But that concentration check is crucial, since whether that damage is there or not could change the outcome. With his +6 modifier, he needs a 12 or better for the fight not to change. Edit: I also need to know, out of the 6 missed shots I had, how many survived and how many broke. |
| Faroth08-21-05, 07:52 PM | Sorry man, I want a rerun. I wanted them to begin a fight to begin, and I noted in my tactics that i wanted to be far of melee (that's the point of expeditious retreat). Also, please add my damage on arrows. 1d8 + 1 (Magic) + 1 (Point Blank Shot) + 2 (Favored Enemy: Human) "I'll try to be far (60 or 70 ft), I don't want to be melee with the half-giant. I'll try to wait until my two opponents begin a fight between them" "The General Tactics are running and shooting, hiding for cover if possible, being out of melee and finish my opponents after they begin to fight between them." |
| Snommelp08-21-05, 08:03 PM | Also, in the arena, I do not believe there is any flat-footedness once round 2 has commenced, since all parties would have acted at that point. My AC vs the touch attack should have been 15. When you're attacked by an invisible opponent, you don't get your dexterity bonus to AC unless you have Uncanny Dodge or Improved Uncanny Dodge. |
| Mind Rogue08-21-05, 08:14 PM | At Uther, After rereading your tactics, I've decided that the only part of them I didn't really follow is the fact that you say to use a magic missile spell. You definitively said to charge him with shocking grasp, which would be nigh impossible to do inside obscuring mist because of how long it takes to use detect chaos and the fact that it is a concentration spell. The entangle was clearly not working; the DC is only 11 and your foe has a +6 reflex save. Also, you don't specify that you want him to come to you with obscuring mist; your tactics say to move with it, then to charge him with Shocking Grasp after spotting him with detect chaos. I took it to mean that the most important thing was charging him, particularly since the detect spells are pretty unreliable and do not work in conjunction with touch spells. However, your Magic Missile did win you back the fight. |
| Maraxus08-21-05, 08:19 PM | When you're attacked by an invisible opponent, you don't get your dexterity bonus to AC unless you have Uncanny Dodge or Improved Uncanny Dodge. I think Uncanny Dodge does not help. With invisibility, you lose your dex bonus, allthough you are not flatfooted, uncanny dodge helps against flatfooted but not other ways to lose your dex bonus like this one. The blind fighting feat helps (at least against melee opponents) |

The blind fighting feat helps (at least against melee opponents) Quoted from the PHB, page 26: Uncanny Dodge (Ex): At 2nd level, a barbarian gains the ability to react to danger before his senses would normally allow him to do so. He retains his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) even if he is caught flat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. However, he still loses his Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized. |

(You may summon the swarm so that it shares the area of other creatures.) If no living creatures are within its area, the swarm attacks or pursues the nearest creature as best it can. The caster has no control over its target or direction of travel. Arcane Material Component: A square of red cloth. Determine Effect: A spell successfully activated from a scroll works exactly like a spell prepared and cast the normal way. Assume the scroll spell’s caster level is always the minimum level required to cast the spell for the character who scribed the scroll (usually twice the spell’s level, minus 1), unless the caster specifically desires otherwise. The writing for an activated spell disappears from the scroll. Spell Completion Items: Activating a spell completion item is the equivalent of casting a spell. It requires concentration and provokes attacks of opportunity. You lose the spell if your concentration is broken, and you can attempt to activate the item while on the defensive, as with casting a spell. A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You then act normally after the spell is completed. What all of these quotes means is that a scroll casts the same way as if the spell was prepared from memory. Since the casting time on Summon Swarm is 1 round, it would not come into effect until just before your next turn. So based on what you said (I have not looked at the fight), the actions in the match are correct. |
| xanadu08-21-05, 09:28 PM | @ mind-rogue. Reflex save in rd. 2 is Omo's not yours (will edit for clarity). Omo's penalties are accounted for (normal bnonus is +6). @ madcow force screen wont help vs. Zahrat's likely mode of attack while you are in entanglement. str check to me seems better in that situation. You lose the spell if your concentration is broken, and you can attempt to activate the item while on the defensive, as with casting a spell.). which indicates that a scroll is only a standard action unless the scroll says otherwise and since the RAW here... Activation: To activate a scroll, a spellcaster must read the spell written on it. Doing so involves several steps and conditions. Decipher the Writing: The writing on a scroll must be deciphered before a character can use it or know exactly what spell it contains. This requires a read magic spell or a successful Spellcraft check (DC 20 + spell level). Deciphering a scroll to determine its contents does not activate its magic unless it is a specially prepared cursed scroll. A character can decipher the writing on a scroll in advance so that he or she can proceed directly to the next step when the time comes to use the scroll. Activate the Spell: Activating a scroll requires reading the spell from the scroll. The character must be able to see and read the writing on the scroll. Activating a scroll spell requires no material components or focus. (The creator of the scroll provided these when scribing the scroll.) Note that some spells are effective only when cast on an item or items. In such a case, the scroll user must provide the item when activating the spell. Activating a scroll spell is subject to disruption just as casting a normally prepared spell would be. Using a scroll is like casting a spell for purposes of arcane spell failure chance. To have any chance of activating a scroll spell, the scroll user must meet the following requirements. • The spell must be of the correct type (arcane or divine). Arcane spellcasters (wizards, sorcerers, and bards) can only use scrolls containing arcane spells, and divine spellcasters (clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers) can only use scrolls containing divine spells. (The type of scroll a character creates is also determined by his or her class.) • The user must have the spell on his or her class list. • The user must have the requisite ability score. If the user meets all the requirements noted above, and her caster level is at least equal to the spell’s caster level, she can automatically activate the spell without a check. If she meets all three requirements but her own caster level is lower than the scroll spell’s caster level, then she has to make a caster level check (DC = scroll’s caster level + 1) to cast the spell successfully. If she fails, she must make a DC 5 Wisdom check to avoid a mishap (see Scroll Mishaps, below). A natural roll of 1 always fails, whatever the modifiers. Scroll Mishaps: When a mishap occurs, the spell on the scroll has a reversed or harmful effect. Possible mishaps are given below. • A surge of uncontrolled magical energy deals 1d6 points of damage per spell level to the scroll user. • Spell strikes the scroll user or an ally instead of the intended target, or a random target nearby if the scroll user was the intended recipient. • Spell takes effect at some random location within spell range. • Spell’s effect on the target is contrary to the spell’s normal effect. • The scroll user suffers some minor but bizarre effect related to the spell in some way. Most such effects should last only as long as the original spell’s duration, or 2d10 minutes for instantaneous spells. • Some innocuous item or items appear in the spell’s area. • Spell has delayed effect. Sometime within the next 1d12 hours, the spell activates. If the scroll user was the intended recipient, the spell takes effect normally. If the user was not the intended recipient, the spell goes off in the general direction of the original recipient or target, up to the spell’s maximum range, if the target has moved away. Several arcane spells are different in level for sorcerers and wizards than they are for bards. Such spells appear on the table at the level appropriate to a sorcerer or wizard (considered the default because bards typically don’t involve themselves in scribing scrolls). Says nothing about casting time... then unless it is a really wierd scroll it has a casting time of a standard action since i am only completing a spell that was already cast yet recorded in scroll form right before completion therefore it is true that A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. SCROLLS A scroll is a spell (or collection of spells) that has been stored in written form. A spell on a scroll can be used only once. The writing vanishes from the scroll when the spell is activated. Using a scroll is basically like casting a spell. Physical Description: A scroll is a heavy sheet of fine vellum or high-quality paper. An area about 8 1/2 inches wide and 11 inches long is sufficient to hold one spell. The sheet is reinforced at the top and bottom with strips of leather slightly longer than the sheet is wide. A scroll holding more than one spell has the same width (about 8 1/2 inches) but is an extra foot or so long for each extra spell. Scrolls that hold three or more spells are usually fitted with reinforcing rods at each end rather than simple strips of leather. A scroll has AC 9, 1 hit point, hardness 0, and a break DC of 8. To protect it from wrinkling or tearing, a scroll is rolled up from both ends to form a double cylinder. (This also helps the user unroll the scroll quickly.) The scroll is placed in a tube of ivory, jade, leather, metal, or wood. Most scroll cases are inscribed with magic symbols which often identify the owner or the spells stored on the scrolls inside. The symbols often hide magic traps. From this quote regarding casting from scrolls, we see that it works as if you were casting from memory. Now, for the spell you are talking about, Summon Swarm. Again, emphasis mine. Summon Swarm Conjuration (Summoning) Level: Brd 2, Drd 2, Sor/Wiz 2 Components: V, S, M/DF Casting Time: 1 round Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Effect: One swarm of bats, rats, or spiders Duration: Concentration + 2 rounds Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No You summon a swarm of bats, rats, or spiders (your choice), which attacks all other creatures within its area. (You may summon the swarm so that it shares the area of other creatures.) If no living creatures are within its area, the swarm attacks or pursues the nearest creature as best it can. The caster has no control over its target or direction of travel. Arcane Material Component: A square of red cloth. From this, we know that, when casting this spell from memory, it takes one round. Since casting from scrolls, as seen in the first quote, is *exactly like casting from memory, then casting from a scroll *also takes one round. Now, for the effects of a full round of casting...again, emphasis mine. Cast a Spell A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You then act normally after the spell is completed. We see now that it would take effect at the beginning of the next turn. Also, the quote that you are citing that says activating a magic item is a standard action is true. However, you are missing one key point....again, emphasis mine. Activate Magic Item Many magic items don’t need to be activated. However, certain magic items need to be activated, especially potions, scrolls, wands, rods, and staffs. Activating a magic item is a standard action (unless the item description indicates otherwise). Because the spell itself requires a full round casting time, this means that any scroll of the same spell *also requires a full round casting time. The amount of casting time needed does not change just because it is a scroll. So, because the item descriptor (in this case, the description of the spell itself), states that it has a full round casting time, so does the scroll. The only way to change the time that it takes to cast the spell from the scroll would be to have the feat Quicken Spell applied to the spell as a part of the scroll, in which case it would then be a standard action casting. But since this does not have Quicken Spell, the casting time does not change. This is true regardless of whether you are casting from memory or from a scroll. |

| madner08-22-05, 04:18 AM | Also, you don't specify that you want him to come to you with obscuring mist; your tactics say to move with it, then to charge him with Shocking Grasp after spotting him with detect chaos. I took it to mean that the most important thing was charging him, particularly since the detect spells are pretty unreliable and do not work in conjunction with touch spells. However, your Magic Missile did win you back the fight. However MM can't work, since shield has a second effect beside giving +4 AC: Shield creates an invisible, tower shield-sized mobile disk of force that hovers in front of you. It negates magic missile attacks directed at you. The disk also provides a +4 shield bonus to AC. This bonus applies against incorporeal touch attacks, since it is a force effect. The shield has no armor check penalty or arcane spell failure chance. Unlike with a normal tower shield, you can’t use the shield spell for cover. I hope you still have those rolls you did latter. :D |

IMO, once you've got an enemy down with Tasha's, hit them with the Bat Swarm and then directly follow up with the Scorching Ray. Sure, they get a +4 AC for being prone, but their denied Dex & it is a ranged Touch.... Fairly good chances of hitting. |

| Altaris1308-22-05, 08:49 AM | @Altaris: Look at the subject line  Come again? EDIT: No one in my fights this week had the rights skills for extra income? Skills and Earning Money Not everyone was born as a gladiator. Many characters had to get their daily bread in another way, by using their talents and skills, and many continue to do so now. Once a week, as a Free Activity, you can use certain skills to earn extra money if you have at least 5 ranks in that skill. These skills are Sleight of Hand, all Perform skills, all Profession skills, and some Craft skillsx. You may only use one skill at a time to earn money! You earn (Take10+skill modifier)*ECL gold pieces in a week. The Pitlord mentions this extra income at the bottom of the fight along with the fight rewards, and adds them together. There is no need to link it seperately because you will already link it along with the fight. x: all Craft skills except Craft armorsmithing, weaponsmithing, bowmaking, poisonmaking, and alchemy. These skills already have a function in the CoCo (see below). |
| Altaris1308-22-05, 08:57 AM | Sorry man, I want a rerun. I'll try to wait until my two opponents begin a fight between them" "The General Tactics are running and shooting, hiding for cover if possible, being out of melee and finish my opponents after they begin to fight between them." Faroth: If until 9th or 10th round doesn't begin the fight between them, I draw a scroll of scorching ray and cast it in a opponent I see, and then I change to bow and arrows, and start shooting. Silas was NOT going to begin a fight with the half-giant, per his tactics which specified to take you down first. Kregor was NOT going to begin a fight with the Silas. He wanted basic tactics & you were his assigned target. Also, at no point were you within 30ft for PBS. I was very careful to keep track of that since both Lothan & Silas could benefit from PBS. I did include your damage on Silas for Favored Enemy. Scorching Ray does 4d6 damage. Lastly, you were 60ft from the giant when you zotted Silas. Now, if you like, you can forfeit your Scorching Ray attack on Silas in Round Nine. BUT, that means neither Kregor nor Silas will be in LOS for you to attack in Round Ten. That would mean you forfeit per the 10 round rules for hiding. I leave it up to you. EDITS: 1- edited round 12, Lothan's attack on Silas did +1 damage for magic weapon. |

In this way, I should have ended up at (-20,11) or somewhere near there. 2. In round 8, I summon a Large Fiendish Centipede, but this is a full round action, so it doesn't appear until just before my next action. 3. In round 14, I don't know why you had me drop my flail rather than just release a hand from it and cast. Also, again, my summon takes a full round. 4. With force screen up, Dameon's AC is 21 not 22 (its a shield bonus, so it doesn't stack with his buckler). I don't think anything missed because of this, but I figured I would mention it. 5. (If you do, you do not also get a 5-foot step.) When you run, you can move up to four times your speed in a straight line (or three times your speed if you’re in heavy armor). You lose any Dexterity bonus to AC unless you have the Run feat That lose of Dex thing is interesting, and being a full round action, any of my attacks after his run have him without Dex to AC (and I think that affects a few rounds) 2) The fact that summoning takes a full round is actually a big deal, as it means my guy would not have run away from your summon, and instead would have attacked. If I would have hit, you would have had to have made a concentration check or lose the spell. Losing that centipede would have been a big deal. Also, you would have been dead by Round 14, as while you were summoning I would have made my attack, and my next attack was the fatal crit that killed you. Also, not that it really matters (its overkill), but since the PBS dmg, Off. Prescience, and Favored Enemy bonus are not variable dice, they would be multiplied by the crit as well. |

| TelinArtho08-22-05, 10:59 AM | Thanks Soullord for fixing the errors. I didn't realize that about Run - I guess I learned my thing for the day... Huan's argument bears fixing the fight. However, I don't see any point in my second summons (he's not trying to avoid me anymore, so just attacking seems prudent). Also, wasting a round casting enlarge and then dismissing it was not very prudent. My character is not stupid, so if he would decide that being large is too much of a difficulty to move through the center stack, he just wouldn't cast it. /d |
| michael_noah08-22-05, 11:03 AM | I haven't gotten a response from SodaGuy about his poisoned arrows. From what I can tell, it's impossible to poison your own arrows outside the arena unless you have poison use. I also know of no way to have others poison them for you, that is, you can't buy arrows that already have poison on them. So, I'm assuming he actually bought doses of poison, not arrows, and I'm just going to have him not use them, or poison them during the fight, unless there's something I'm missing here. |

| Gonbow08-22-05, 11:13 AM | @Vathelokai Thanks for running the fight. You could have saved some time in round 16 however, as I stated that if I cannot withdraw without provoking an AoO I would engage in melee ;) Probably would have done well since Yasha was enlarged at that point and he wasn't, making a 5' step back, drop bow, get out chain, rage and trip a good proposition (+10 to hit vrs touch AC 10, +15 opposed check vrs +9 and then a +10 attack vrs AC 14 with 2d6+10 damage... Not to mention the AoO when he tries to stand up, which is also at AC 14, since it happens before he stands up.) That said; I don't mind the archery intense version of this fight, as it proves I'm not completely a one-trick pony. Beware the arrows of fast-moving barbarians, woo-ha! So in the end, no need to rerun from that point, unless KerlanRayne wishes to do so. It would probably save a boat-load of arrows. Re: Crafting money; The crafting money link is the link to the battle, which I have to do anyways ;) |

| NiQil08-22-05, 11:33 AM | I knew I was on the money with the summoning. :D That is about the only type of cleric I like to play (Dwarven Thaumaturges roxxorz!) And NiQil, I had thought about the readied attack. But since you were effectively flat-footed, I didn't think you would still get it. Anyone care to show me why he would? You don't get AoO when flat-footed, thus my line of thought. @Cat: What professional incomes? There was nothing in tactics... Readied attacks occur regardless of whether you are flatfooted or not. And as I said previously. I was *not flat-footed. Once round 2 commences, I *can't be flatfooted, since you are only considered flatfooted before you act (either due to surprise or before your first round of initiative comes around) and clearly I was acting the entire fight. But regardless of the flatfooted, readied actions *always occur immediately before the action that triggers them. So there needs to be a concentration check in round 10, and from then on, Lothan's initiative would be behind mine. That is the whole purpose behind readying an action. Readied actions are *not attacks of opportunity, and regardless of whether I was flat-footed or not, I would *still get the readied action. Readying an Action: You can ready a standard action, a move action, or a free action. To do so, specify the action you will take and the conditions under which you will take it. Then, any time before your next action, you may take the readied action in response to that condition. The action occurs just before the action that triggers it. If the triggered action is part of another character’s activities, you interrupt the other character. Assuming he is still capable of doing so, he continues his actions once you complete your readied action. Your initiative result changes. For the rest of the encounter, your initiative result is the count on which you took the readied action, and you act immediately ahead of the character whose action triggered your readied action. You can take a 5-foot step as part of your readied action, but only if you don’t otherwise move any distance during the round. We definitely need a concentration check in round 10 based on my readied action. The result of that roll has the potential to change the outcome of this battle. As I said before, the DC is 18, meaning a 12 or better is needed to succeed and not change anything. 11 or lower and the battle needs to continue with my HP adjusted accordingly throughout the following rounds. |
| TelinArtho08-22-05, 11:47 AM | @NiQil - there's two possibilities here: 1. You have a readied action to attack someone when they become visible to you. You hear someone casting and shoot at him before he finishes the spell. You get your attack before the spell goes off, but you suffer miss chance from concealment of invisibility (because it hasn't ended yet). 2. You have a readied action to attack someone when they become visible to you. You hear someone casting, but wait to attack until they become visible. Your opponent becomes visible after finishing the spell - the same moment that a scorching ray hits you. You attack afterwards as that is when he becomes visible. Regardless however, Rapid Shot is a full attack action, so you wouldn't be able to get your second shot off from the readied action anyway. You must use the full attack action to use this feat. |

I did not notice that the shot in round 10 was a Rapid Shot. @Altaris With what Telin just pointed out to me, there is now no need for a concentration check, as the second shot should never have happened. I double-checked the battle, adding those 8 HP back to Lothan's running total, but they do not make a difference, since at the time of the kill shot from Kregor he had 5 HP, making it 13 with the 8 added back in. The kill shot was 21 HP of damage, so he would still die. So there is no need to edit the fight at this point. @Telin Thanks for the heads up on the rapid-shot....I did not even see that two shots were fired in that round. |

Well, I will keep on searching for a mistake (that would change something) ... but looks like I won't find anything. :( And if you see the 3 critical rolls on my side: The listen check to hear Milo coming, the spot check to see him waiting to shoot me and the fortitude save against the poison - not a single 1. Right, only 2s. With this rolls I had lost any fight, at least I have spend nothing - again :) Ps: But as far as I know, XP is not capped by my level, only gold. You're allowed to feel cheated here. The online roller hated you this week. Things would have been different if you could have found him, if he hadn't rolled well, and if you hadn't rolled a crap save... I also thought that XP wasn't capped, but then I saw this: "If you lose the fight, you get only 1/3 of the XP you would have gotten if you had won it. Also, you can never get more XP than 100 * (your current ECL) by losing a fight. For example, if you are ECL 12 and you lose against an ECL 15 gladiator, you should gain (10,800/3) = 3,600 XP. However, the rule limiting XP in case of a loss cuts that down to 1,200 XP gained." |
| SoulLord08-22-05, 01:58 PM | Thanks Soullord for fixing the errors. /d Adjusting the fight with both of your and huans comments in the end due to summons being a full round action you lost an AoO on him for 8 dmg so in the end he survives long enough to deal his lucky 2 20's in a row critical. I'll continue to review this fight at night. and through the afternoon when I have the chance. |
| Maraxus08-22-05, 02:04 PM | Hmmmm, should I say this ... :D Hey, in round 2 he could not hear me because of distance. And then at round 3 he auto-spotted when I moved from (1, 2) to (2, -2). But since (2, 1) and (2, -1) have relative cover to Milo's point through the 5ft³ stones on the way I only crossed 5 ft without cover and that means, that I get a hide check (because I have 5 ranks in hide). Right, maybe he wouldn't spot me till round 10 and then he would have to leave his snipers nest because of the 10-round-delay punishment. And then, I catch him flattfooted... :D Okay, never mind. Thematical rolls are kept, so his first attack would still hit and my first save would still fail and I loose anyway. :) |

Unfortunately for Mythos... it almost certainly won't matter. I'll check. Edit: On second thought... I think that moving from (2,1) to (2,0) takes 5 feet of movement, and as soon as you start moving again, you're no longer hidden, so he can spot you right away. I don't know how this should really be interpretted because of the stupid idea that someone had to suddenly measure things in one-foot increments. |

| Vathelokai08-22-05, 05:14 PM | @Vathelokai Thanks for running the fight. Not to mention the AoO when he tries to stand up, which is also at AC 14, since it happens before he stands up.) I thought the wording was a bit funny. Also I decided to be ultra literal. You implied in the tactics that you wanted to wear out his forceshield and skate while at range, so I went with that. I think you didn't realize that all his stuff was ML2. No worries. |
| Mind Rogue08-22-05, 05:34 PM | I must say that I'm getting rather tired of editing the Nyatar vs Balbanes fight. I hope it's now done to both of your satisfactions (except for the third entangle, which I actually have a roll for and that Nyatar passed, but it unneccisarily complicates my alterations). |
| Sunwolf08-22-05, 06:22 PM | @Cat Comments about Brilf n Dune vs Gnolls, hyena, and displacer beast. First, thanks for running the fight. Why does Brilf drop his bow in round 3? Monks can fight with things in their hands. In round 4, Brilf should be tumbling away from the displacer beast and shooting arrows at the gnolls not tumbling in amongst them! It also would keep the displacer from getting some rounds of full attacks. I agree that one of us standing there being a punching bag is bad tactics which is why we wanted to get rid of the gnolls/hyena with arrows. With Brilf staying near Dune, we should have been able to do flanking etc -- especially with three large creatures trying to get at us. From my tactics: Never drop bow. ... Gnoll and hyena fighting: Shoot arrows at gnolls and hyena (if none are basing Brilf). Priority order injured gnolls, gnolls, hyena. If any of the gnolls or hyena are basing Brilf, flurry away at them to take them down. Avoid displacer beast while fighting gnolls and hyena. -- 5' step or move/tumble as appropriate. If you get a chance would you look at this fight again? Thanks. |
| madner08-22-05, 06:44 PM | I must say that I'm getting rather tired of editing the Nyatar vs Balbanes fight. I hope it's now done to both of your satisfactions (except for the third entangle, which I actually have a roll for and that Nyatar passed, but it unneccisarily complicates my alterations). I'm aware it must be frustrating, however I do think his last attack did miss as shield was still there. To explain why, it last 1 minute: My turn 2 - my turn turn 3: 6 sec My turn 3 - my turn turn 4: 6 sec My turn 4 - my turn turn 5: 6 sec My turn 5 - my turn turn 6: 6 sec My turn 6 - my turn turn 7: 6 sec My turn 7 - my turn turn 8: 6 sec My turn 8 - my turn turn 9: 6 sec My turn 9 - my turn turn 10: 6 sec My turn 10 - my turn turn 11: 6 sec My turn 11 - my turn turn 12: 6 sec Toghter 60 seconds. Had he attacked me in turn 2 I wouldn't have had the protection, had I had higher iniative I would get the protection in turn 2 and would loose it after my action in turn 12. |
| Caterane08-22-05, 07:21 PM | @Sunwolf: Dune wanted to keep away at all times so there's no flanking bonus for you. Brian was very clear about what he wanted his character to do. As were you: Gnoll and hyena fighting: Shoot arrows at gnolls and hyena (if none are basing Brilf ). Priority order injured gnolls, gnolls, hyena. If any of the gnolls or hyena are basing Brilf, flurry away at them to take them down. Avoid displacer beast while fighting gnolls and hyena. -- 5' step or move/tumble as appropriate. That's what I did. Of course, avoiding melee with the displacer beast is impossible. It's a small dungeon and it's faster than you on top of that. |
| Faroth08-22-05, 07:35 PM | @NiQil: noted. Any one else have any concerns about the fight of Silas vs Kregor vs Lothan? I don't Faroth has been on yet to go over my response. I don't want to bother by making my character attack the giant, I think the fight is right, I didn't have luck. See u, and sorry for the problems. |

| TelinArtho08-22-05, 10:08 PM | @Cerebus - thanks for running the fight. The only thing I see is that when Daeren charges in, Sdentch would not be able to use her readied action because I have reach. /d |

If multiple people from around the world are speaking English to communicate, but some of them are having difficulty, it's usually the American or the Brit's fault. Those of us who speak it as a primary language have such a disregard for our own tongue that it's no wonder that a lot of people can't understand us. Then there is the fact that English is just an amalgamation... You shouldn't have gotten me started. |
| SoulLord08-22-05, 11:42 PM | fight Dameon vs tlanth updated is up fight (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7033566&postcount=268) Long story short dameon survived long enough to pull his devastating critical. details Since summon is a full round action an AoO was removed since tlanth couldnt get close without provoking an AoO of his own possibly disrupting his spells. Protection from chaos potion kept the NE centipede at bay. All the rest was basically the same as the original one |
| nightbanegod08-23-05, 12:52 AM | @Gonbow and meekhead sorry that your fight is not up yet.. however i do have it as a work in progress in the battle thread... im going to finish it tues day mourning .. for me aproximately 7-8 hours from this post.. i just need some   due to RL ... however this past weekend, i assure you will not be repeated for many many monts when i have to try again for testing police academy... give me a few more hours and it will be up in the mourning thanks and sorry for the delay |

| McJarvis08-23-05, 01:40 AM | Not a good week for me! Can you tell me if my one arrow broke (50% chance) or whether I recovered it? Sebastien Loisel roll: 51+ means arrow death (32) arrow saved! |
| KerlanRayne08-23-05, 02:50 AM | @Vathelokai: About my Power Stones, here a quote: Universal House Rules Powerstones/Tattoos: For every two manifester levels above the minimum, the power level increases by one. This directly affects the pricing of such items. Example: Energy ray [ML 5] = 25*5*3 = 375 gp. So my prices are correct, and my Expansion stone would last 30 minutes since it's augmented. @Vathelokai Thanks for running the fight. KerlanRayne PS - Can you charge an opponent with cover if you have reach? For some reason I'm thinking the lance chargers could do this. Am I right? |
| madner08-23-05, 03:17 AM | Aarrgh! That's what I get for copy and pasting from the round forward. There. Done. We can keep it at that, as the deadline is approaching, but I would like to know why you changed the fight sequence? First change: Nythar doesn't get hit once, drinks a potion, attacks and kills. Now, after several changes, we are again at the doesn't get hit part, but now I drink two potions, why? Also, I'm not sure about round 11 and the full attack of the warhorse, he moves 15 feets, doesn't that mean ge gets only one attack? |

For some reason I'm thinking the lance chargers could do this. Am I right? The expansion powers durration is 1 round x manifester lv. The power level does not effect any part of the power, so the durration would be 3 rounds. In fact, I can find no mention of a power level shift effecting powers at all in the SRD. I believe the Gladius house rule only really applies to the price. If anyone can find a rules quote that says different, let me know. Movement During a Charge: You must move before your attack, not after. You must move at least 10 feet (2 squares) and may move up to double your speed directly toward the designated opponent. You must have a clear path toward the opponent, and nothing can hinder your movement (such as difficult terrain or obstacles). Here’s what it means to have a clear path. First, you must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. (If this space is occupied or otherwise blocked, you can’t charge.) Second, if any line from your starting space to the ending space passes through a square that blocks movement, slows movement, or contains a creature (even an ally), you can’t charge. (Helpless creatures don’t stop a charge.) Cover is generaly considered an 'osbtacle' and blocks a clear path. However, it does not say specifcly that a charge is stopped by cover. In the case of reach weapons, you could technicly charge up to one side of a rock (assuming it is the closest position to attack from) and your reach could go 'through' the rock. The defender would get +4 AC. As for reruning the fight; I realize that I misread Gonbow's tactics. My perfectionist nature wants me to rerun the fight, but my real life responsibilities and other duties on the boards give me no time this week. I wish I could. Perhaps I could pay you in credits? Or I could pay both credits for a rematch next week under a different pitlord. I know it's no consolation, but I'm stuck. Juntar: 23 arrows broke. Yasha: 21 arrows broke, 3 MW arrows broke, 3 cold iron arrows broke |

| Sunwolf08-23-05, 08:23 AM | @Cat One last comment on Brilf n Dune vs gnolls, hyena, displacer beast In round 5 the displacer hits with two attacks for 1d6+4 each the first one does 8 and the second one does 12 (when the max of 1d6+4 is 10)? If we assume max damage of 10, in round 6 the first gnoll takes Brilf to 0 hp, the second gnoll does not autohit and Brilf possibly has a chance to get another full attack -- if he makes his autohypnosis roll he might not even take damage from attacking while disabled (hopefully Brilf can roll higher than a 7 on his attacks ;) ). We didn't have much luck in this fight and I am grasping at straws here, but every little bit helps. :) |
| TelinArtho08-23-05, 08:51 AM | @Soullord regarding Tlanth versus Dameon: In round 11, the centipede needs a SR check. The centipede's SR is 8 and the potion's Caster level is 1. Here's the line under Protection from (Good) that would apply: Spell resistance can allow a creature to overcome this protection and touch the warded creature. The same would happen in round 15. In round 15, the large centipede is at (3,16) and Dameon is at (3,15). I move up to attack (you don't state my position) and he withdraws. With a rock at (3,14), the centipede would get an AoO against when he moves out of a 2nd threatened square (another SR check if it failed the first one) In round 16, the large centipede is at (-12,14) and Dameon is at (-12,15). He uses a powerstone which would again trigger an AoO - so another SR if it failed the first 2. Also, you don't state my position here, which makes it hard to follow where I am... In round 17, Dameon takes a five foot step from (-12,15) after being flanked and fires. Frankly, there is no position that he could be in that is flanking that allows him to move out of flanking and fire without still being in melee with at least myself. The centipede is large and takes up 4 squares, so at least takes up (-12,14) and (-13,14). In order for Tlanth to flank him, Tlanth must be at (-12,16). With the column block each of the blocks at (-11,14-16), Dameon can move to either (-13,15) and draw an AoO from both myself and the centipede or to (-13,16) and draw an AoO from just me. |
| TelinArtho08-23-05, 09:47 AM | So, has anyone heard from TCB? It is now past the late deadline, so if TCB doesn't post, I would love to have someone take over the fight. | TelinArtho08-23-05, 12:31 PM | @Soullord - what about round 17? Tlanth gets an AoO against Dameon when he fires his bow because he will be unable to get out of melee range from Tlanth. Also, I'm still looking up whether the 2nd centipede would have gotten 3 separate SR rolls for the Prot. or if the first one completely blocks it. /d |

| TelinArtho08-23-05, 01:01 PM | @nightbanegod - just to remind you - you MUST include the entire character sheet of all gladiators, not just a link. |
| nightbanegod08-23-05, 01:03 PM | @tellinartho .... look again ... its already fixed |
| TelinArtho08-23-05, 01:04 PM | @Kaigan - I'll do it. |
| Kaigan08-23-05, 01:07 PM | Thanks Telin, PMing tactics now. |
| TelinArtho08-23-05, 01:14 PM | Tactics received - will run now. |
| Gonbow08-23-05, 01:30 PM | @nightbanegod CDG's automatically do full damage, so the scythe would have done way more than 1 point of damage, unforunately. It'd probably be a lot easier the whole way around if you write out the rolls as they happen and include the link to the entire log of the fight at the top or something. Just a suggestion though, there is nothing wrong with the way you did it. And Santos did use a tattoo of skate, not nothing ;) Speaking of Tattoos of skate... are they 50 or 100 for the 26832905th time? Prisonlord said they could be 50; I'm confuzzled :P |
| michael_noah08-23-05, 01:34 PM | Gonbow, That's not quite right. CDGs automatically hit, and automatically critical, but do not do max damage. Also, It looks like a CDG could not have been attempted yet, since it's a full round action and the gladiators were not adjacent that turn. |
| SoulLord08-23-05, 01:36 PM | @Soullord - what about round 17? Tlanth gets an AoO against Dameon when he fires his bow because he will be unable to get out of melee range from Tlanth. Also, I'm still looking up whether the 2nd centipede would have gotten 3 separate SR rolls for the Prot. or if the first one completely blocks it. /d You are right the large centipede blocked his movement for the round I adjusted the fight and gave you another attack +7(11) miss! In the end it didn't change the outcome as he still managed to fire his lucky critical |

| nightbanegod08-23-05, 02:21 PM | @nightbanegod CDG's automatically do full damage, so the scythe would have done way more than 1 point of damage, unforunately. Prisonlord said they could be 50; I'm confuzzled :P WOOPS ... added his tattoo of skate to items used... and as far as that CDG damage goes i was trying to figure out how much damge it would do since you gota STR penalty, but the SRD website wasnt responding, and i got my PHB out on loan to a friend of mine so i just went with what i thought would be regular damage... but you would have killed em anyways since he failed his HOLD person save twice and he doesnt have a whole lot of HP for a 4th lvl character. ... i would suggest an amulet of health *edit* i was just linking the rolls but basically putting the result into words instead of numerals ... gives it more of a story feel i think, like being narrated. but if you really wanted the rolls just click on any link and have invisible castle bring up all rolls for SvsC thats the name i used for this fight |

To borrow a line from Gonbow....for the 12098374342 time.....skate tattoos cost double just like every other personal tattoo. Here is the relevant post from Cat in which he states this. |
| KerlanRayne08-23-05, 02:53 PM | The expansion powers durration is 1 round x manifester lv. The power level does not effect any part of the power, so the durration would be 3 rounds. In fact, I can find no mention of a power level shift effecting powers at all in the SRD. I believe the Gladius house rule only really applies to the price. If anyone can find a rules quote that says different, let me know. Yes, the CoCo rule only affects the price of Augmented powers. Expansion has been augmented, thus the [Aug] at the end. In the power it says "If you spend 2 additional power points, this power’s duration is 10 minutes per level rather than 1 round per level." KerlanRayne |

KerlanRayne Since there are 3 ways to augment the power, you should probably specify the effects it is augmented with in silver, after the price. Thanks for not ripping my head off. I owe you one. |

| TheMagister08-23-05, 07:05 PM | Sdentch vs Daeren (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7040716&postcount=275) is up. Any comments/questions let me know please. Man, I so totally owned him, except for the whole "rolled 1's and 2's the entire fight" thing...(sigh). Thanks for the run. TM |
| nightbanegod08-23-05, 07:27 PM | @gonbow... ok i added your chefly ways on there, did you see anything tho that was functionally wrong with the fight? |
| TheMagister08-23-05, 08:33 PM | @nightbanegod Regarding this fight: Round 1-8: No evidence of any speed enhancing tactics being used. Therefore, the successful tanglefoot bag attack reduces Aeryn's move speed to 1/2 of 30 ft., or 15 ft. She could NOT have gotten so close to Torgirr on that turn (stow bow- move action, move 10 ft.-hit with tanglefoot=speed reduction, move 5 ft. more, round over. New location should be determined with the speed reduction in mind. Round 9: Cover prevents AoOs. Using the rock for cover while moving away would be the best option, and one that Torgirr would've taken advantage of considering the superior reach of his foe. Also, per my submitted tactics, I related that "I don't give away free damage if I can help it", referring to AoOs. That further reinforces my "use the rock to prevent them" position. Otherwise, hey...can't fight the criticals... I'll leave it to your decision on whether or not to rerun the fight from that point. I'd appreciate it if you did, as Torgirr out-speeds Aeryn b/c of the entanglement, and a few rounds of ranged attacks could make all the difference in the fight. TM |
| nightbanegod08-24-05, 02:04 AM | for aeryn closing in on your character by my map... i had him move 30 ft towards you activating your held action of throwing a tanglefoot bag... the tangle foot bag didnt stop him entirely and since he took a double move action that round to close with you even at half speed from where you had attacked him with the tangle foot bag he would have hit you ... if you look at the map i included at the end of the fight, you threw the tangle foot bag when he was at [x=17/18,y=-1/0] or just 20 ft infront of his starting location and since he has 30 ft of movement base he would have had from there another 40 ft of movement but since its halved he only got 20 ft which was still enough to close with you ... and as far as having his bow already out at the start of his turn to having his spiked chain out read this... Draw or Sheathe a Weapon Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires a move action. This action also applies to weapon-like objects carried in easy reach, such as wands. If your weapon or weapon-like object is stored in a pack or otherwise out of easy reach, treat this action as retrieving a stored item. If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may draw a weapon as a free action combined with a regular move. If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it would normally take you to draw one. Drawing ammunition for use with a ranged weapon (such as arrows, bolts, sling bullets, or shuriken) is a free action. so first move action .. stow bow... 2nd move action draw spiked chain *edit* and yes i know what you wanted to do with the rock and cover however he had based you, so you didnt have cover and you were prone... he had readied his turn to take ANY AoO you would have given ... and nearly anything you do from the prone position invokes an AoO, so you didnt have the opportunity to hide behind the rock again |

He only could have possibly had 30 ft. of movement on the same turn that he sheathed his bow. You can't sheathe a weapon and still take a double move. You *can sheathe a weapon and then move your speed whilst *drawing a weapon, which is what Aeryn did. If I tagged Aeryn with a tanglefoot bag 15 ft. into her movement, then she's DONE moving for the round, having already moved 1/2 of her speed (base speed 30 ft. halved being 15 ft.). Also, even though she can REACH me with her 20 ft. of spiked chain nastiness, she CAN'T AoO me b/c I have cover from her. Please look at the PHB pg. 151 for the specific RAW I'm referencing. The best sections are titled: Low Obstacles and Cover and Cover and Attacks of Opportunity. Additionally, even the simple "withdrawal" action would've gotten me away from her, since I was standing in the last square of her reach. Please consider these things. TM |
| Altaris1308-24-05, 07:04 AM | @TM: Not "her," but "him." :D Aeryn is a guy. And just to point out, the "stow bow & draw chain" are supposed to be done before any movement towards Torgirr with a charge & trip the following round. I'll have to go back & rereview the fight again to see what TM is referring too, but it sounds like he is correct. If so, then it would just become a ranged combat with Torgirr's hand axes VS Aeryn's mighty longbow. |
| TelinArtho08-24-05, 10:25 AM | @Pitlords - unless TCB pokes his/her head in to say otherwise, I would like to not see a fight assigned to him/her this week. This was the second week in a row that he/she hasn't done a fight he/she agreed to do for pitlording, and his/her characters have not been updated to active status. I just don't want to see someone scrambling for a pitlord at the last minute because a fight was assigned to him/her. Of course if TCB speaks up and shows that he/she is still around - I'm fine with him/her as a pitlord. Just a thought. /d |
| Huan08-24-05, 12:18 PM | Innocent little expansion (in case you're new here, that means "story" :P ) of Vandelar vs Maylee (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7042857) is up. |

| nightbanegod08-24-05, 01:10 PM | @TM you didnt tanglefoot him after he had only moved 15' ft, if you read what i just poseted a little bit ago and look at the coordinates in the post, again here they are [x=17/18,y=-1/0], you tanglefooted him after he moved 20 ft... so he got 20 ft of normal movement before making a successful reflex save against a tanglefoot bag. so he would have gotten another 5 feet of movement out of that one move action, on his 2nd move action he only got the 15 feet of movement as is described in the tanglefoot bag desc. in the SRD for half movement. and again i quote the SRD on drawing and sheathing weapons Originally Posted by SRD Draw or Sheathe a Weapon Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires a move action. He was also maintaining cover from you the whole time so charging wouldnt have worked since i dont think your quite strong enough to shatter that boulder he was hiding behind first :D |
| Altaris1308-24-05, 01:21 PM | LOL No, I didn't mean shattering any boulders. :D I was just quoting myself in case TM was referring to my initial closing attack and in case it happened to be appropriate to the circumstance. Of course, that was at 7:00 am and before my coffee... :D As for cover blocking AoO, I'm taller than the cover and have a reach weapon, so I don't think cover even applies to the situation. |
| TelinArtho08-24-05, 01:27 PM | @Pitlords - you might want to note that Czernobog vs Mugen is complete (late). As a general note to all gladiators, pitlords and others, I suggest you be vigilant about the activities you partake in. Cat is prone to make mistakes, and fixing them well after the fact can take time (and may not be worth fixing in the end). If you see an error, I would suggest pointing it out to be fixed ahead of time. Imagine, if you will what happens if the fight above is marked as not finished. Czernobog and Mugen would fight again next week with a new pitlord and nightbanegod would receive another -1 credit for having a not-turned in fight (he already receives -1 for being late). /d |
| nightbanegod08-24-05, 01:29 PM | by my estimate altaris ... your character would have been approaching 15 feet tall with a 20 ft reach :D eww... and since you could succuessfully make it to a point around the boulder to have seen him...you didnt actually see him before you started moving which is why you based him... you were just gettin what you thought was close enough.. nothing he could do when the first thing you do is trip him and then crit him... and on a side note because of your proximity he would have to have stood up provoking an AoO to withdraw at a reasonable speed which with your tattoo of skate would not have gotten him far at all or attempted to withdraw from the prone possition effectively crawling away at 10 feet a round since you can only crawl at 5ft movement and withdrawing is a double speed fullround action *edit* tellinartho ... would you have me pm pitlords account? |
| TelinArtho08-24-05, 01:40 PM | @Nightbanegod - it couldn't hurt. I would only do so if your fight is a) marked late when it shouldn't be or b) not silvered out an hour or two before pairings are to be done. I generally assume that Pitlords/Cat will see a message directed at him (and I'm generally right). He does miss stuff on occasion though, so a PM would work. At the very least, there would be a record of you asking him to fix it which could be pointed to later (if the problem was fixed later). I also try not to PM pitlords unless it is something that the rest of the world could not benefit from, as in it is something to do with my own characters' records or a quest being marked as not finished when it actually is, stuff like that. If I have a question about a way a specific game mechanic would work, I just post it to the tavern. A problem with my fight, I'd post it here, etc. /d |

| Begferdeth08-24-05, 02:52 PM | Arggg... Completely missed logging on yesterday to see Luni had picked up the fight. Ive sent in my tactics anyways, just in case. |
| TelinArtho08-24-05, 02:55 PM | It happens begferdeth - we just get matched up next week. Most pitlords that aren't able to do a fight would be able to forward tactics. TCB however seems to have dropped off of the face of the CoCo. /d |
| NiQil08-24-05, 03:04 PM | Unless the two of you can find someone who could get it done in the next two hours.... |
| TelinArtho08-24-05, 03:15 PM | Well, hey if someone wants to - they surely can if Beg is still able to forward tactics. Hell - I'd run the fight myself if there weren't rules specifically against it... /d |

Hey man, no worries. :D I wasn't speaking against the way you handled things. I was just offering my opinion counter to the point about TM's comment of hiding behind Cover to avoid AoO. But since it is an hour & half before pairings, I am personally going to consider this matter resolved as it stands. I don't see anything having been posted to make me think otherwise, so please let me know if this is incorrect. |
| Luni08-24-05, 03:37 PM | @begferdeth and TelinArho: Unfortunately, I don't have the time to finish your guys fight before the pairings. :( I'll tell Caterane to give me your guys fight for this set of pairings. I'll do it tonight, and then it is done for you guys. |

Please note that you CANNOT SHEATHE a weapon as part of a normal move if you have a +1 BAB or higher. HE (sorry Altaris) just couldn't have moved that far. Also, even if he COULD'VE move to there, I'd still have cover from him, even though he's a Large-sized creature. Altaris could've picked his highest square and the straight line drawn from any corner of it would have STILL passed through the square containing the rock. I'll quote from the PHB: To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target's square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC). When making a melee attack against an adjacent target, your target has cover if any line from your square to the target's square goes through a wall (including a low wall). When making a melee attack against a target that isn't adjacent to you (such as with a reach weapon), use the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks. Look, if you don't wanna run the fight again, that's cool. It's 600 xp/gp. I'll survive without it. Just learn the rule for adjucating stuff like this and I'll be happy. You're a great pitlord...I'm not taking anything away from that. You're just wrong this time. I'm out. TM |
