It was posted in the tavern that we would freeze the level eights... i thought... either way, I can only have one active character this week, and my soulknife is paired at level three... sorry... maybe next week!

Hey Ash, you want a rematch with Cyric? Since your 6th level char was all ready for last week but was alone, you don't even have to edit if you don't want.

Uh, looks like it's contagious. Darn it. Now i know who started this trend.

My tactics accidently sent to Tellish_of_Ket, and thankgoodness it's not my opponent. Hopefully they've been re-directed to Caterane.

Ps. Early tactics = Early Revision = Early Fight :)

First let me start by saying: Dude, lay of the drugs ... or whatever it is you are on that leads you to believe in 10 minute tactics.

Second, after a quick review of Ban'zanifal, it appears he has too much gold (Should be 963), doesn't list past expenditures and needs to fix the link for his 3rd fight. (And what's the deal with his feats? He had Speed of Thought for his first two fights and then it disappears / turns into something else that is slipping my mind right now...)

Third, I am giving warning that I will have tactics to you within 24 hours, but likely towards the end of that time frame. Sorry. :ayyyy!:

Tactics for Donkey received. Tactics for Donkey deleted with extreme prejudice. Good luck wishes and positive energy sent to Snark. :D

KerlanRayne: Ye gods, Ego Whip. Ildechai did not prepare for Ego Whip, and he's full of spells he'd never have memorized if he knew that Cyric was a possible opponent (he's 100% prepared for a fight with Pard, in fact). So I'm going to have to say no (sorry). It wouldn't be the real Ildechai fighting; he'd merely be a hollow shell of himself. :)

I'll address this here, LL.

I trust you're accurate (I'll chk ASAP, but would you mind sending me a PM showing how he has 460 too much? It's kind of important....) on his gold, I tend to simply list expenditures as they come (this is std. for all my chars and I tend to be fairly accurate... most of the time ;)).

As for Speed of Thought, Ban never used it, and when I asked if anyone had an issue with it being changed over to Power Attack, no one objected (you can see, he never ever got off his horse ;))

Tactics recieved for Ernie, Tactics for Crest, Ban, and Tori sent out... need more time as Bruno wonders why he always fights Druids and clerics ;)

Edit: I'll add past expen. after this fight.

DMG p 301
Stunned
A stunned creature drops everything held, can't take actions, takes a -2 penalty to AC, and loses his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any).

You couldn't heal because you were stunned. And as soon as you saw the arrow bounce off you were going to throw your thunderstones, but you got stunned.
Also i don't know if you accounted for it though, but potions of bulls/endurance cost 300 gp each.

Sorry about the wands; those are supposed to be potions (I marked them wrong; just me being braindead :behold: ). I just have one question: why didn't you have Selvos draw a potion of Cure Light and use it? That's why I had them on there, for times that Selvos drops into the red zone on HP. After he got hit with that Scorching Ray, he was into the red (less than 1/4 of total HP). Other than that, everything was pretty much what I was expecting Selvos to do in the fight.

Quoted from SRD 3.5 / DMG Page 238
To have any chance of activating a scroll spell, the scroll user must meet the following requirements:
The spell must be of the correct type (arcane or divine). Arcane spellcasters (wizards, sorcerers, and bards) can only use scrolls containing arcane spells, and divine spellcasters (clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers) can only use scrolls containing divine spells. (The type of scroll a character creates is also determined by his or her class.)

The user must have the spell on his or her class list.

The user must have the requisite ability score.
If the user meets all the requirements noted above, and her caster level is at least equal to the spell’s caster level, she can automatically activate the spell without a check. If she meets all three requirements but her own caster level is lower than the scroll spell’s caster level, then she has to make a caster level check (DC = scroll’s caster level + 1) to cast the spell successfully. If she fails, she must make a DC 5 Wisdom check to avoid a mishap (see Scroll Mishaps, below). A natural roll of 1 always fails, whatever the modifiers.

Ranger Level 1 + Divine Scroll + Spell on Ranger Spell List + Ability Score (11 - 14) = Might be able to cast the spell, but is allowed to try.

For the Caster Level Check, the Ranger would have an effective Caster Level of 0.

So, to summarize, Rangers can use wands AND scrolls.
MotherBast

08-22-04, 07:42 AM
LL, nice resurch, but wrong conclusion, unfortunatly. This question was answered in old FAQ. You can't make a caster level check untill you actually attain a caster level. So, Rangers can't attempt to activate scrolls untill ataining their first caster level (which I thought they attained at level 4).

Anyway, no, they can't attempt to activate scrolls without CL, but wands don't require CL, so they can activate them. The FAQ with this answer is in Dragon mag, around issue 300ish.
Magagumo

08-22-04, 07:44 AM
Tut tut Rangers do not have an Effective Cast Level of 0, as this suggests that a fighter or barbairan might have such a thing as well (a caster list does not a caster make).

The PHB states that at 4th lvl, the ranger can begin to cast spells, with an Effec. CL of 1/2 their ranger levels.

Remmeber, wands are "spell trigger," and thus are dependent on the spell "being in your future" [on spell list] (call it potential if you will.)

Meanwhile, casting a spell from a scroll is "spell completion," the term iself lending credence to the notion that one is still casting the spell from the scroll (thus the CL check, thus the provoked AoO). If oen can't cast spells (like 1-3 Ranger/Paladin), one can't use scrolls.

Edit: Also in D&D main page's growing FAQ as well (for those w/o every Dragon)

for Pain and fear, the values of the material componets are 1k each. MS has (1,000gp) out beside the spells, so I'm assuming thats what he paid.

He will need to pay extra now for the spellcaster service, but he has more than enough to cover the expense.

Yeah, i paid for the components myself. After seeing i couldn't permanent them until later, i also recorded to components on my "used" section, and paid another 2k to recast them both. Instead of being permanent this time however, i will need to recast them yet again after my next fight.

I figure it's 7500 gp to make one of them permanent and 5000 for the other, i'll just pay the regular casting cost for a couple of fights until they become redundant, useless or replaced with more powerful versions.

I'm not particularly thrilled with the way you ran Cuul in this one - by the way I'm reading it I guess you had him finish a double move right into the middle of Daenerys' range? This contradicts my tactics which stated he would ready a move action to threaten if he couldn't charge or move - attack. Your color text implies that Cuul could hear her position, roughly, so I'm not sure why you had him do this. With the range on her ray less than a single move for Cuul, there's no good reason she should ever get two attacks to none on him without at least having to make a concentration check to cast defensively.

At any rate I don't expect you to rerun the fight, but please keep this in mind next time.
Ashenai

08-30-04, 09:32 PM
Okay, as a relevant part of the Harvester 1-Jindl fight discussion has just disappeared, I'm going to say NO MORE RERUNS for this one, unless you both want to miss another week of pairings. My sincerest apologies to Jindl. After taking everything into consideration, though, I'm fairly certain that the Harvester would have won in a (fair) rerun as well. (Note that you wouldn't have been able to keep your location a secret, as the Harvester's Avoral has True Seeing).

I will now re-post the fight. Unfortunately, since I didn't have the last rerun saved on my computer, I had to cut-and-paste it from my browser cache, which means I lost all the different fonts, colours, editing, etc. All the information is still there, though, just a lot less legible. :P

In summary: Harvester 1 wins, Cat can go level him. :)
Jindl

08-30-04, 09:39 PM
I don't think the Harvester would have cast True Seeing if you corrected the initiative issue. I don't think he would have cast it at all, considering that his tactics referred to it as a "useless/less important spell" that should be saved to be converted into healing spells.

You have already stated that without the True Seeing, the Harvester misses on his charge attack due to the cloak of minor displacement.

You have plenty of time left to fix this, especially since with the board reversion we won't be having pairings for several days.

-Jindl
Ashenai

08-30-04, 10:00 PM
*sigh*

I want to get this fight right, but I also want it done, finally. At any rate, I'm done with it for today. If pairings are significantly delayed, I'll consider yet another rerun; I stand by my belief that the Harvester should get to cast True Seeing, though. Cat has always stated that he wanted pitlords to be free to supplement tactics, based on the pitlord's belief of what the tactics were trying to do. In my opinion, True Seeing is a very reasonable spell choice for the Harvester.

Similarly, in the first version of the fight, I had you burrow down and then cast Antilife Shell, effectively locking down the burrow. Antilife shell was not the first spell specified in your tactics for buffing with, but I recognized that it was your best option there, realized that burrowing + Antilife is a really cool and useful trick, and so I used it.

I am convinced that people want to see their gladiators behave intelligently, instead of stumbling around ineptly when something happens that their tactics didn't foresee. I'm not going to have the Harvester stand around picking his nose because he can't get at Jindl and he didn't specify a long enough buff queue.

I'm 99% sure that--if I play both gladiators intelligently, yet adhering to their tactics as much as possible--the Harvester will win the rerun.

Don't worry Ash, Jindl is just trying to dissect the fight which he would do in any case. As you said, the Harvester is surely not standing idle while he has no target.

Jindl chose to burrow and get out of the fight for a few rounds so he should accept the fact that the Harvester uses this time aswell. Anything else would be ridiculous and very bad pitlording, asides from you having done nothing wrong.

Thanks for running the fight Ash.

Btw, the fight will enter the World Threat for most damage done!

I will be reposting the Kelek vs Harvester 2 fight in just a couple minutes.

I didn't see Cat's post asking for an explanation of the fight.

I will do a rerun, though I will address some of his issues here. The nightmare has 180' movement if it double moves. Kelek and Relic have 60' movement for a single move, which still allows them to ready.

The Harvester's tactics explicitly state that if Kelek is readying to cast Silence spells, that he is to instead cast "useless spells" until Kelek is out of Silences.

I will rerun the fight, having the Harvester move and cast, and see if that makes a difference.

Edit: to clear, and be a bit nicer.

Now here's the problem. Can the Harvester and Nightingale stop on a dime in front of a wall? This has a lot of bearing on Kelek and Relic's tactics. The nightmare has 90' (fly) (good) movement. Ruling/judgment?

There are three things to consider:

1. Is the nightmare capable of turning to avoid an obstacle that it can see?

The answer is here (http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040706a). A creature must be able to turn in place to avoid an obstacle directly in front of it. A nightmare has good manueverability and can turn in place.

2. Does the nightmare get a chance to react to a prismatic wall?

If the wall appeared some distance in front of him, I would say yes. The wall is visible and the nightmare has the manueverability to avoid the collision. However, it is entirely possible to create the wall sharing the same space as the nightmare (see the link above), in which case it gets a reflex save or takes damage as if it moved through the wall.

3. Does the nightmare get a chance to react to a readied, invisible wall of force?

I would say no. First off, the wall appears during the nightmare's action, so I don't think it would have a chance to react. Secondly, the wall is invisible, and the nightmare cannot see invisible, so it wouldn't even try to avoid it. I think that in this case, a collision definately occurs, with the results listed in the link above (the nightmare stalls and falls to the ground below, taking falling damage).

Hope this helps!

Creatures with Good maneuverability can hover, and have no minimum forward speed. In theory, they can stop whenever they like.

On the other hand, here's the relevant bit about readied actions, in the SRD:

"The action occurs just before the action that triggers it. If the triggered action is part of another character's activities, you interrupt the other character. Assuming he is still capable of doing so, he continues his actions once you complete your readied action." (emphasis mine)

According to the rules as written, if (say) I have a move action to go from (20,0) to (14,0), and my opponent has a readied action to put up a wall at (17,0) when I start moving, I have to finish my action after he put up the wall; that is, I have to go through the wall. The rules are pretty clear, even if one is walking on the ground, or flying with Perfect maneuverability.

Whether we want to allow this is something that should be discussed, of course. For this fight, however, I believe the rules support this part of Kelek's tactics.

Myrridin, as I said, I don't want to have a rerun. 3 losses then, so what.

Cat

PS: Perhaps you should clear up the part with the insulting PM. Thanks.

Ash's response is why I said it wouldn't have a chance to react as part of question #3 (above).

Question #2 above assumed that the wall was not a readied action.

The PM situation has been resolved. We both got a bit hostile/hot, and have talked it out. I'm going to rerun the fight, and it does look like the Prismatic Wall readying is a valid tactic. In that case, I'll roll the saves, and we'll see how the Harvester is doing after them.

We need to resolve the situation with the Rings and area spells, ie Silence, Fireball, Flame Strike, now, before the next fights. Tactics are written one way, and then interpreted another by a Pitlord.

You know what, I'm sorry Cat, that the tactics didn't happen as you wanted them. I'm not going to spend the multiple more hours to change it. If the Prismatic Wall thing works, I honestly think that the match is won right there. Since there seems to be a lot of support for it, especially given that he can just summon it on your square, I'll go with that. Relic used the scroll of Prismatic Wall, as in the first fight.

Just noting that the red part is False. Check the spell description.

Readying to movement is perfectly valid though. (and perhaps too nasty)

Ahhh yeah, I missed that. The readying to summon right in front of you as you move is valid though. And the consensus seems to be that it's a legal tactic, and really nasty.

If its not too much trouble, would you mind editing the fight to reflect this?

@ Jindl/MysticMonk: Did any of you post the Corinthus or Viciocelis fight before the server change? I can't find it and I think it might have gotten lost in time. Please repost them. I have no idea how did they go.
