The following have been imprisoned by our illustrious Prisonlord.

Vivi
Ariator Windhaven
Lady Esmara Silvertree
Victor
Adlar
Nyatar
Tak the Hungry
Aran Whitehelm
Maylee the Wanderer

I see some of the named characters above set as Ready for Oct 5. In order to fight, you need to visit the prison thread and fix your violations before you will be able to fight this week.

Also, as a note, all characters ECL 5 and below that have been inactive for 3 weeks have been archived. This will streamline the roster and make things easier to see who may be fighting and whatnot.

Time to start taunting...

So who gets to face the mighty mutant Aquin?

Let's see, active gladiators at ECL6:

Talari (on quest)
Vandelar (not updated - maybe ready in time)
Va'ria (not updated - maybe ready in time)
The Pale Rider... the only one who is actually set to ready...

Hmm... Aquin methinks you will be in for a fight... they're all spellcasters...

Um... I think you accidentally archived Grik when you archived the inactive characters. Grik's been incredibly active, so he should still be on the roster...

I think I see why (you can link to Grik through the Prison thread...) - when you updated Grik you set him to ready for SEPTEMBER 5, not October... hence Tellish thought he had been inactive.

I'd send a PM to the Pitlords account with the link to Grik's sheet to make sure he gets paired (after you've updated the ready...)
Snommelp

Yeah, I just noticed that myself. Oops. He's set for the right month now.

Okay, Vandelar's been updated and he's active, but Va'ria is crafting - so she's out...

The number of possible opponents dwindle...

Hold your horses. I just made the pre-emptive update for vandelar

I still have to make some adjustments like buying some bolts of sahuagin slaying ;)

10-05-05, 12:13 PM
Mmhmm; Could Santos be put back on the active list as well? I've been/will be cycling through my characters (1 active a week), so don't make Tatyana inactive either, though it shouldn't approach 3 weeks again, as long as my fights don't get held over like Tat's did.

10-05-05, 12:21 PM
I would do as Telin recommended...send a PM to Pitlords with a link to your character and have it put back on the active roster.

I find it kind of amusing that after the archiving, over half of the ECL 3 roster is gone....and 1/6th of that league are my characters LOL.

I'd ask how many of them are Emrys's, but I don't know if he's even been here that long...
Actually, I think he has... by one week.

I actually plan on bringing Mokoridos the Winter back, but his being archived is fair enough, I suppose. I would play him more except that I have two guys on campaigns and they are two of my favorites. I have so many builds I want to do, I often wonder if I should just stick with two.

Editing: No more editing of characters after 9 PM GMT on Wednesday. Characters who are edited after this time will either not be paired, or will automatically lose their fight.

9 PM gmt is 4 pm EST. So unless we hit a daylight savings time that i and my computer forgot to update, the countdown continues forward and has reached T-37 minutes and counting.

Two immediate issues....

1. Keltsat is not set for combat this week...Keltsat is set for crafting this week...even says so on his sheet.

2. Apparantly I didn't get assigned a 2nd fight again (even after ya said I would LOL).

Usurpator

10-05-05, 05:51 PM
Shazzelin will take on Keltsat's opponent (who is it anyway? Ah the Devolved one...), since he was not paired this week because he was incorrectly removed from the roster (as was Maeril), and while ToK graciously offered a monster fight as replacement, but a Darkmantle (ECL1) was rolled as opponent using the tables...

Obviously I'd rather have Shazzelin fight a real opponent, even if it is a cowardly one ;)

TheMagister is on the inactive pitlord list....I would hold them until ToK comes back to see if this is correct or not.....your fight might get reassigned to another pitlord (I'll certainly take it if I haven't picked up a second fight by then).

That would be because you never let anyone know you were fighting. You never sent the Pitlords account a message saying you had characters to be included in the roster.

A lot of people make characters, but not everyone makes them available for the roster. You have to announce it to the Pitlords that you have characters ready.

I can give one of your guys a monster fight if you wish. Simply send a link to the Pitlords account of your characters and which character you want to have a monster fight and i will set you up.

i was wondering about this... if you craft one item that exeeds 1000 gp to be able to fight in the same week... but in this example ... its not quite 7000 gp which is the max per week before you get held over for another week for crafting... can you craft multiple items so long as they dont exeed 7000 gp ... for example PoP 2nd and a few PoP 1st's . or are you stuck crafting only one item a week?

Your "Rules of Gladius" thread says nothing about sending a message to the pitlords account to add me to the roster. To quote it word for word, from the sectioned labeled "Starting out"

I'm done with my character. What now?

Post him or her on the Gladiators thread. Next, decide what you want him or her to do. If you want your character to fight in the Arena, edit the title line to read "Ready for <date>", where <date> is the next Wednesday. If you want him or her to go on a Quest, send a quest request to Pitlords. If you want to go on a Campaign, you have to apply to the Campaignlord.

Once again, it states...

I'd like to make a character. How do I go about it?

All you have to do is fill in this Standard Character Sheet (just remember to delete the [QUOTE=Pitlords] tag from the front and the [QUOTE] tag from the end). Once it's posted to the Characters of Gladius thread and is to your liking, edit its title line to read "Ready for <date>", where <date> is a Wednesday, and he will be paired on that Wednesday. Simple, eh?

Apparently it's not that simple.

This time, from a different section labeled "The Basics of Core Coleseum"

Can I join? How? What do I need?

Joining is surprisingly simple. All you need to do is create a character using the Standard Character Sheet, post him or her on the Characters of Gladius thread, set the title to "Ready for <date>", where <date> is the next Wednesday, and you have officially joined; your character will be fighting in the next set of pairings. Make sure to say hello in the Tavern. We're all friendly folk, and we'll gladly help you out with any questions you may have.

Nowhere does your "Rules of Gladius" thread say that I have to private message a Pit Lord to be added to the roster. I don't want to seem like a whiney *****, but I don't want get cheated out of a fight this week because your faq did not provide me all the information I needed. And no, I don't want a monster fight because I would like to go up against another living opponent, not something designed to hold me over. Perhaps you could take a fight between character X and Y (In which neither have sent tactics yet), and put X against one of my characters, and Y against another?

Anyway. To avoid confusion in the future, please make your faq more specific.

There's a three-way fight in the ECL 3 league, you could break that up for one of his characters...
Poe The Great

10-05-05, 09:15 PM
A solution, if I may offer one, would be to break up the three way fight as Snommelp stated for one of my characters, and put the other one against Huan's (now fightless) opponent.

I don't really care if the fight is broken up - I was pretty confident about it at first glance, but I am always willing to help out a new character.

As to not sending a message to pitlords indicating the character is active - it is rare that I've done that myself - only twice to be exact. The first was with my first character here (Kraegin) and the second was with Aquin - who required a credits purchase.

Also, Dr. Funk created a character who was set to active, but was not set to his miniquest. I will run it for him if there are no objections or someone else can take it - it should be a fairly quick credit.

Please Note the Following Changes!

Squall (Dr.Funk) MiniQuests for an Air Elemental: TellinArtho
Ivelios (The Undershadow) vs Durkon, Giant Slayer (Poe The Great): Maraxus
The Wolfcaller (Poe The Great) vs Zassl (Maraxus):Tellish
The Wasp (LongArcher) vs 2 ogres (monster): Usurpator

I didn't break up the three way fight, so it's still in tact, since most tactics for it are already written.

I know Wolfcaller is fighting an ECL 4 character, but their power ratings are similar. Should still be a good match.

**EDIT**

I'm done with my character. What now? Post him or her on the Gladiators thread and send the Pitlords a PM with the link to your character sheet. This will help ensure that your character does not get accidently overlooked and added to the Roster.

I bolded the new text. Hoepfully this will help alleviate some confusion.

With regard to your comments...

On the Longstrider thing....I got the durations of longstrider and divine favor crossed up....when I wrote them I thought it was divine favor that lasted longer....<note to self - never write tactics before bedtime>

Also, with regard to the movement, you are incorrect. My base speed is 30, so the armor only takes me down to 20, and then longstrider bumps it back up to 30. Keep that in mind if there is any cause for a rerun (I didn't see any, but my opponent may).

It seems you are right - but the logic about it is in error. The Longstrider spell adjusts you base speed - and then your base speed is modified by the encumbrance you have.

However, I was in error in thinking that 40 base is reduced to 25 when encumbered - it actually is 40.

[For instance, if your base speed is 30 (20 when encumbered) and you use skate to bring you up to 45 (but only 30 when encumbered)]

I guess that depends on whether you apply the penalty or the bonus first. If you apply the bonus first, then it is 30 + 10>40 - 10>30

If you apply the penalty first, it is 30 - 10>20 + 10>30.

Works out the same in my case, but could make a difference for others. I honestly don't remember if you apply the penalties or the bonuses first.

The Xill fight is going to be somewhat difficult. I don't mean he's stacked, but he's definitely going to be a challenge.

Equipment for the Xill [2000gp]

2 Mighty[+2] Composite Longbows 600gp
1 Potion of Fly 750gp
1 Potion of Cat's Grace 300gp
1 Potion of Shield of Faith +2 50gp
1 Potion of Protection From Good 50gp
1 Potion of Protection From Evil 50gp
1 Potion of Mage Armor 50gp
1 Oil of Magic Fang 50gp
1 Oil of Magic Weapon 50gp
1 Potion of Remove Fear 50gp

I almost asked you if you wanted to have a challenge. Then you would have gotten a Xill with 1 level in Wizard, which doesn't add any CR and would allow him to stack a lot more expendables in his inventory. Some might argue this set-up is unfair, but you will kill him regardless. Dispel Magic rocks out.
TelinArtho

10-06-05, 02:37 PM
@NiQil - this should suffice to set the question to rest:

Bonuses to Speed: A barbarian has a +10 foot bonus to his speed (unless he’s wearing heavy armor). Experienced monks also have higher speed (unless they’re wearing armor of any sort). In addition, many spells and magic items can affect a character’s speed. Always apply any modifiers to a character’s speed before adjusting the character’s speed based on armor or encumbrance, and remember that multiple bonuses of the same type to a character’s speed don’t stack.
Ravashack

10-06-05, 03:19 PM
In regards to your comment TelinArtho, let me see if I can clarify it further. Because of Psionic/Magic Transparency, Dispel Psionics is functionally equivalent to Dispel Magic (minus the counterspelling option).

Thus, Dispel Psionics works on spells.

Dispel Psionics has a medium range however.

Thus, he should have attempted to Dispel Psionics on Round 4 or 5(depending on how long it would take to get out the Powerstone)to dispel any potential buffs that she may have used, because she moved into range of the power (not to mention LoS)(100 ft + 10 ft/level, ML 5 so 150 feet).

Why?

Because he's not entangled or otherwise distracted. It would have potentially wiped out Barkskin and Shield of Faith, but it didn't matter in the end (although it would have let two of the misses become hits if it worked--one because she would have moved closer and removed the range penalty, and the other because it would have removed the additional AC).

At this point though, I just want him to get another level. ^_^ I'm not losing any resources, so I'm not really complaining.

Sorry I wasn't clear enough.

I was thinking that Kira was going to Entangle me (Long range, 1 min/level) and shoot at the easy target that way, so I was more worried about that.
TelinArtho

10-06-05, 03:32 PM
I guess my confusion then is all the wording around it:

Buffs: Perius doesn't need Spellcraft to tell that Kira's doing *something* (he just won't know what), and assuming Entangle or Hold
Person pop out it will be blatantly obvious that Kira uses magic or
psionics to Perius, on an IC viewpoint. Meanwhile, it's common for people
to buff up with items anyway before starting to move out, so if Kira gets
in range of Perius without him being Entangled or otherwise distracted,
and it's pretty obvious Kira wants to engage to set off her own traps,
feel free to have Perius drop any bolts in his hand, dig out the power
stone, and attempt to have Perius use a Negate Psionics from the
Powerstone on Kira. Due to Magic/Psionics Transparency, Negate Psionics
will work on Kira's buffs and spells. That means it'll also disable the
wand if it is targeted instead. If possible, please put away the
Powerstone after that and reclaim the bolts he dropped.

From this I read: "... it's pretty obvious Kira wants to engage to set off her own traps, feel free to have Perius drop any bolts in his hand, dig out the power stone, and attempt to have Perius use a Negate Psionics from the Powerstone on Kira."

What are Kira's "traps"? Well, I have to assume that it is Entangle/Hold Person that you mentioned above. Since Kira had no intent on that, and when you had the opportunity, there was only one spell cast - it didn't make sense for you to use it.

Reading your statements affirm that you wanted to use it as a dispel magic on his buffs - but from the above it looked more like you wanted to use it to get out of entangle or something similar.

I encourage you to be more precise when writing your tactics. This was a problem I had quite frequently when I started here a few months ago.

I don't see where it would've changed two of your attacks. You had a 15, 17, 19, 11, 13, 16, 23, 15, 15. If you are talking about the 19 - his AC is 20.

The 19 was a 19 because of range penalty. Assuming the attempt to Dispel worked, that would have bumped the rolls all down 1 round, and since Kira moved in closer after that shot, it removed the -2 from that round on. Unless I read the results wrong.

Awesome fight.
My only question was why would Casgish attempt to CDG and provoke when he could take a normal swing with a +4 to hit (prone opponent) and not provoke?

And of course there's that magic missle spell (which I should used to recast shield, my fault there)...

Seriously though, great fight, great story, thanks for running it.

I agree it was an awesome fight. There are some slight errors though that I'd like to bring up (and not all of them favor me...):

Breeze only seems to be taking a single move in round 1 and 2. Why? She moves from (22,-1,0) to (5,0,20ft) - unless she's zigzagging for no reason - she should have another full move of 100ft to cover.

Also, why would Breeze go to the center stack only to then head to the south? A more direct and visible route would be to head directly to the south square - and on seeing nothing, head to the west. With 200ft of movement, Breeze could easily get to the area of (-10,-3) and still have checked the south square and that's just the first round of movement. Also, given that, Breeze should definitely have a listen check for Casgish's casting (DC0+distance).

All of Breeze's attacks should be at +6 because of aid. (I didn't see a case where a miss would've been a hit - but it should be mentioned anyway).

In round 13, I don't have 2 spell levels left. I started with 4, and cast Doom (1) and Hold Person (2). So, instead of Spiritual Weapon, it would've been Inflict Light Wounds - and I probably would've tried touching Ielenia with it, since Casgish wasn't nearby.

As to the rewards for the hunter fight, it seems it gets a little screwy when there's only one player with an ally. Since you only get rewards for killed targets - Ielenia (who theoretically has the easiest job...) gets +25% for my ally and I lose 25%. Meanwhile, Casgish - who actually has to fight my ally and me at the same time - gets nothing...

Anyway, the rewards, if each of us gets a kill is as follows (check me here, obviously):

Delaria 900-25% = 675xp, 675gp + 51gp for profession
Casgish 900xp, 900gp + 66gp for craft
Ielenia 900+25% = 1125xp, 1125gp + 60gp for craft

Just noticed something else about the fight - and this is a big one:

When Ielenia is stunned, her AC drops to 11 (+3 armor, -2 deaf). She loses her shield bonus because she is not weilding two weapons. This means that one of the owl's attacks while he is stunned still hits (1 more damage essentially). Also, since he doesn't pick up his kukri, he continues the fight from that point with an AC of 17. This means that the crit in round 16 is confirmed and you can guess who is dead - and that's before he does his hit to take me down - so you can guess who is still up...

Where'd that -2 come from? According to the SRD:Deafened: A deafened character cannot hear. She takes a –4 penalty on initiative checks, automatically fails Listen checks, and has a 20% chance of spell failure when casting spells with verbal components. Characters who remain deafened for a long time grow accustomed to these drawbacks and can overcome some of them.Nothing about a -2 to AC. Also, if you're going to argue about the shield bonus being gone (a valid argument), then I'm going to question why Ielenia didn't pick the kukri up.
TelinArtho

10-07-05, 11:05 AM
Sorry - I attributed the -2 to the wrong thing - it goes to the color spray.

And yes, you can feel free to argue that you would've picked up the kukri to fight two-weapon style - but then the attack that knocks me down at the same time as you misses...

Sorry - I attributed the -2 to the wrong thing - it goes to the color spray.Better... but I think I see the rounds you're talking about. 7-10, right? There are two hits and two misses listed, and the attack rolls were 10, 10, 11, and 14. You're right about the AC, but Uther's got the attack listed as a hit, too. And since one of those attacks seems to have been with the thunderstone, there's no change in damage dealt. And yes, you can feel free to argue that you would've picked up the kukri to fight two-weapon style - but then the attack that knocks me down at the same time as you misses...*shrug* It's possible to be fighting two-weapon style without using both weapons. Since Ielenia has a decent intelligence score, I'd say she'd know when to choose accuracy over number of attacks.
EDIT: Actually, Ielenia would have to attack with only one weapon anyway, since she's disabled (0 HP).

The thunderstone is the first attack and is against AC5 (just the square - not you). The 11 and 14 both hit you.

Well, we both know that she wanted to fight two-weapon style the whole time before this - it would stand to reason that more attacks have a greater probability of knocking me down. So that argument simply doesn't make sense.

Regardless, if she chooses to fight two-weapon style - she still gets the -2 to hit with each weapon, even if she only attacks with one weapon. Otherwise, she won't get the +1 Shield AC.

EDIT: Actually, Ielenia would have to attack with only one weapon anyway, since she's disabled (0 HP).

That's true - and really we're arguing something that likely won't matter since you'll be down to -1 once the other hit from Owly gets in...

About the fight Zassl vs the Wolfcaller: Well, there are some points ... I am almost afrait to say something...

Mechanicly:
1st. You forgot to add the distance modifier to the listen check. Don't know, if that changes something..
2nd: "you may use a standard action (concentrating on the spell) to call a bolt"
I don't know but could that require the same concentration checks like concentrating on a spell? :) - Well don't know it so if you say no, no problem.

Tactically:
Don't waste magic missles or a 2nd level spells on the wolf. If it is the only opponent (and I am invisible) ignore it.
Maybe I'm only trying to minimise my loses since the Call Lightning was really something that kicked my tactics, but I didn't want to cast the summon against the wolf.

That what I see first.

Round 5, Ielenia chooses to attack with only one weapon. You don't seem upset about that, so why would you be opposed to her attacking later with only one weapon, even though she has two in hand?

In round 5, Ielenia had to spend a move action to get to me, since I withdrew - that's why she didn't full attack.

Read the feat again. "When weilding a double weapon or two weapons...." Nothing mentioned about attacking with both weapons, and if she only attacks with one, she gets her full attack bonus, unless you can prove otherwise to me with quotes.

You can't have it both ways - either you are wielding two-handed and get the -2 to your attacks and the +1 to AC OR you don't have the -2 to attacks and no bonus to AC.

I did forget about subtracting the shield bonus. I'll have a look at the fight when I get the chance. I didn't include the XP/GP because I thought to some degree the fight might get contested.

Some things I have to include:
- 1 Owly damage
- Crit damage
- 1 magic missile as per written tactics

anything else pressing?

A simple attack instead of a CDG when it would suffice instead of provoking... but that possibly should have been noted in my tactics - Pitlord call.

I'd like to chime in on the last bit with regard to two-handed fighting.

TWO-WEAPON DEFENSE [GENERAL]
Prerequisites: Dex 15, Two-Weapon Fighting.
Benefit: When wielding a double weapon or two weapons (not including natural weapons or unarmed strikes), you gain a +1 shield bonus to your AC.
When you are fighting defensively or using the total defense action, this shield bonus increases to +2.
Special: A fighter may select Two-Weapon Defense as one of his fighter bonus feats.

Emphasis mine.

The feat says nothing about attacking with two weapons...it just says they have to be wielding them to get the bonus. Holding two weapons but only attacking with one does provide the +1 AC. But because the character is not taking the second attack, it does not take penalties for taking two attacks. Snommelp appears to have it exactly correct.

I'll stand down on the two-weapon defense thing - because now I am not sure. Regardless, it doesn't seem likely to me that Ielenia would choose to attack with one weapon when she has both out - because:

a) she has not done so previous in the battle
b) she has nothing in her tactics specifying to use only one and specific mention to using 2 weapons

and
c) the only reason that using the one weapon was chosen by the pitlord in this case was to "save" time from picking up both weapons.

Since she has a greater chance (overall - not in a specific instance) of dealing damage with two attacks - the only reason someone would keep the roll as is is because they are trying to preserve a roll they know will do damage - even if it is against the character's previous tactics.
Snommelp

10-07-05, 06:49 PM
And I'll stand down on the final attack, because the point is moot anyway. Ielenia has unfortunately lost by that time, or at least can no longer effect the fight. I'm not sure if she might still get credit for a kill if she's alive but unconscious when her target dies.

ButI do have one question: if both weapons were dropped in the same square, why couldn't Ielenia pick both of them up in one action?

About the fight Zassl vs the Wolfcaller: Well, there are some points ... I am almost afrait to say something...

Mechanicly:
1st. You forgot to add the distance modifier to the listen check. Don't know, if that changes something..
2nd: "you may use a standard action (concentrating on the spell) to call a bolt"
I don't know but could that require the same concentration checks like concentrating on a spell? :) - Well don't know it so if you say no, no problem.

Tactically:

Maybe I'm only trying to minimise my loses since the Call Lightning was really something that kicked my tactics, but I didn't want to cast the summon against the wolf.

That what I see first.
You should never be afraid to say something. If you have issues with a fight, you should always bring it to your pitlords attention.

Lemme start with Issue #1...

Round 3:
19+3=22-7range=15 (Snowfang's listen check)

Round 4:
16+9-13range=12 (wolfcaller's listen check)
12+3-0range=15 (Snowfang's listen check)

All i did was post the final results, so as you can see, the listen checks were good enough.

Issue #2:
No, it doesn't require a concentration check. It just uses a standard action.

Issue #3:
I actually didn't know what else to do. You didn't cover this situation, and it seemed like if someone got in webbing range, to web them up by first starting with spiders.

If you want, i can have you try to move away from the wolf, then web Wolfcaller. It will save you your SM II spell, but the result will still be the same. Just wondering if that's fair for you.

@Archie - Archie has all those spell levels and you use none of them? I guess I was expecting more... Also, in order to use the crawling tattoo, you must have the bow in hand, but then, in order to cast True Strike from the scroll you must put it away. Imagine how much easier this would've been if you had True Strike memorized and just cast it...

Anyway - good fight - both of you. Good luck in breaking both of your streaks...
Hey TelinArtho,

Thanks for comments. Unfortunately, I do not get to see whom I will be fighting first. haha..If I did, then you are absolutely certain I would have memorized true strike and alter self. When I saw who my opponent was, I tried to save as many resources possible, without taking too many risks. This is the first time I used dissolving weapon and was a bit dissappointed how effective it was. I do not think that is a resource I will attempt again. The cost/dmg ratio was not worth it.

But you are correct, I think I am going to change my memorized spells to be more adaptable to my strategies. Thanks for the fight and well done.

@Snommelp

That's what I wanted to know. After you were stunned, it was most convenient to pick up one weapon and attack a stunned opponent. And after that to press the attack I had you move to battle her instead of picking up the weapon. Do you disagree with that tactic?

Like I said, the point's moot anyway, but I don't understand why it would take any more time to grab both weapons than it would take to just grab one, seeing as both are right next to each other. If the rules say that you have to reach down, grab one, stand up, reach down, and grab the other, then I guess you did what was best.

Okay, I would like to interject my thoughts on this particular fight and how the actions unfolded.

There are a few things, so let me grab a few quotes first....

Draw or Sheathe a Weapon
If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it would normally take you to draw one.

Manipulate an Item
In most cases, moving or manipulating an item is a move action. This includes retrieving or putting away a stored item, picking up an item, moving a heavy object, and opening a door.

Okay, so TWF allows you to draw two weapons at once. Normally you can only draw one weapon at a time.

Now picking up an item, that takes a full round. Nothing in the SRD addresses the location of the object being picked up, specifically nothing addresses the altitude/height of the object being picked up.

Now, a generous interpretation of the rules would turn out like this:

A character with TWF could pick up 2 weapons in 1 round.

Now on the other end of the spectrum, using a strict, interpretation and adding some words in, it turns out like this:

ANY character that wishes to pick up two items MUST: Kneel/Crouch (Move Action), Pick Up Item 1 (Move Action), Pick Up Item 2 (Move Action) and Stand from Prone (Move Action).

I count 4 move actions, equaling 2 rounds of combat.

Now, in this fight, I am confused a bit. It should have gone a bit different, regardless of how you interpret the rules.

Based on how I perceive your understanding of the rules, it should have gone like this:

Round X: Pick up Weapon 1 (Move Action) + Attack with Weapon 1 (Standard Action).
Round X+1: Pick up Weapon 2 (Move Action) + Attack with Both Weapons (Standard Action).
Round X+2->: Fight, fight, fight.

Based on how you ran the fight, you acknowledge that one can pick up and item and attack in the same round. There is NO benefit to not pick up the second item. Ilenia only moves forward at 5' per round after that, and the round following picking up the item, she stays put. There is nothing dealing with kneeling or standing up.

So my understanding of how the fight goes is like this:

Round 11: Ilenia takes a [FREE] 5' step, picks up 1 weapon [Move Action] and Attacks [Standard Action].

Round 12: Ilenia stands in place [Foregoing her FREE 5' step], decides against picking up her Kukri [Would have been her Move Action] and Attacks [Standard Action].

Round 13: Ilenia takes a 5' step [FREE] and continues the fight......

So, in Round 12, Ilenia "...[Forgoes] picking up her kukri for fear of wasting time..." and does nothing with the Move Action that she had for the round.

How would it have been a waste of time to pick up the Kukri?

Ilenia did not use a Full-Round Action, thus she still had her Move Action for the round.

She didn't do any of the following, all of which would constitute the use of her Move Action for the round:

Move, Control a Frightened Mount, Direct or Redirect an Active Spell, Draw a Weapon, Load a Hand Crossbow or Light Crossbow, Open or Close a Door, Mount a Horse or Dismount, Move a Heavy Object, Pick Up an Item, Sheathe a Weapon, Stand Up From Prone, Ready or Loose a Shield or Retrieve a Stored Item.

So the way I see it, Ilenia should have had an additional 5 Attacks before the end of the fight. Sometimes all it takes is a lucky die roll, and with 5 more attacks in there it could have happened.

A small issue with the fight between Ryer Ord Star and Greefe.

In round 6, this attack does not hit. The modifiers are 8 (roll) + 6 (attack bonus) + 2 (rage) + 1 (masterwork) - 2 (charge). 8 + 6 + 2 + 1 - 2 = 15, which does not beat my AC of 20 - 2 = 18. I'm not sure what other modifiers you have there, but they don't appear to be valid. If the axe was thrown (which is not stated in the battle, but could have been), that would add an additional + 2, but would still bring the hit to a 17, still missing. So that takes the 7 damage in round 6 off the board.

What that is going to end up doing is cascade all of my actions down a round starting in round 8, giving me an extra attack there in round 8 because I would not have had to heal as quickly. In the end, this may do nothing more than save me that last charge from the wand, but it still gives me a chance.

Torgirr's AC is 18 + 2(cat's grace) + 4 (cover) = 24.

Grik's to-hit mod with his Luk Bo is wrong. He takes a -4 penalty to Dex on top of a -2 to hit when he's entangled, for a total penalty of -4 to hit with his Luk Bo.

His killing shot missed by 1 instead of hitting on the nose.

I think Torgirr is gonna get another shot (pun intended) at this.

Also, is it too much to ask to have Torgirr hide and drink a healing potion (or two)? I know it ain't in my tactics, but jeez-louise! that's what they're there for!

I do know that I missed adding in the -2 to hit from being Entangled. If there are any other errors, I will correct that as well (I realized it this morning). However, you do not have cover. In melee combat, you would. But at range, the attacker picks a corner of his square and draws a line to any corner of your square. If it bypasses any obstacles, then you have no cover. See page 150 of the PHB for cover during ranged attacks.

As to the healing, with no mention of healing in your tactics, I can't justify healing you. Had you made *any mention of healing, it would be a lot easier to say yes. But with no mention of it whatsover, I just can't do that.

Dude, you got it all backwards.

To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to ANY corner of the target's square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC).

Emphases mine.

As you can see, it is true that the attack gets to choose the most advantageous corner of his square from which the line originates. But the DM has to draw FOUR lines to the target's square (one for each corner in the target's square). If ANY of these lines passes through an obstacle that provides cover, then the target gets to take advantage of it.

Basically, Torgirr gets to be in whatever part of his square is most advantageous to him at any given time.

Even without the charge, he can still reach you in 20 ft, which is half his movement. I did the charge (incorrectly, as you pointed out) because that is what was in Grik's tactics. All removing the charge does is take away his penalty to hit and 2 points of damage, both of which make no difference. If you really want those edited out, I can certainly do so. He didn't. He broke free in round 7. I just forgot to label Round 8 (I also forgot to add in his Reflex save to avoid being entangled again, which was a 16 + 5 = 23, which is a success). There *is a summary of round 7 before he moves, however, seperating the two rounds.

So all he could really do is base Torgirr. Torgirr still would get one more round of TWF (per tactics, Torgirr'd 5 ft. step backward, quickdraw some axes, and try to hit Grik's AC of 19 with ranged TWF).

Torgirr's total bonus to hit would be +8 (+4 BAB, +5 Dex, +1 PBS - 2 TWF)with each axe.

I got's me one more chance.

And if that 12 that Grik rolled belongs to Torgirr, it's a pretty good one.

As you said, he couldn't move after he broke free....it's a full round action to break free. The earliest he could move was the round he killed you in. All the other rounds, he stated in his tactics to stay entangled and use his bow....the only times I had him attempt to break free were when you broke LOS and he couldn't do anything else anyway.

But now that that's settled...I can see if Balbanes can rebound from his first defeat, or if Goran extends the losing some more.

Just for your edification:

The creature can break free AND move half its normal speed by using a full-round action to make a DC 20 Strength check or a DC 20 Escape Artist check.

So, yes, he could have/should have moved on the turn he broke out.

I wasn't aware of that....thanks for the insight. However, Grik's tactics did state to stay in the entangled field and to keep firing with his bow, so his tactics would have had me do the same thing anyway, since he had no LOS on you. In most circumstances that would have gotten a character killed, but it happened to work this time.

A small issue...I see no mention of my damage reduction in any of the damage totals. I didn't total it up, but this may add another round to the fight, though most likely the result will not change.D'oh! You're right... let me see if it changes anything...

I looked. With the DR added in, you'll be at exactly 0 where the fight is currently listed as ending. Anything you try to do at that point would end with you knocked out. I'll go ahead and edit anyway, though.

BTW, what changes did this argument I see make to Grik's fight while I was offline?

No...surrendering is fine....I knew this fight was pretty much a lost cause....I still need some more gold to get this character where I want it (that adamantine chain shirt just killed me, but I wanted it in there from the start). And with such a big disparity in our grapple scores, I knew it was only a matter of time for that to happen....I would have been *very shocked if my opponent hadn't done that.

But on the flip side, I hope his character at least feels bad for man-handling a woman like that....I'm gonna get him a D&D wife-beater to wear into the arena in the future LMAO.

With regard to the Grik/Torgirr fight, nothing ended up changing for you, I believe. You still won, and still only used 2 arrows. It ended up running a few extra rounds, where you ended it by finally getting into melee (in case you haven't read the changes yet).

About gaining money from knowledge skills: That was for being part of the mage guild. All guildmembers could earn money from their knowledges just like from crafts.

However, since the guild rules are in limbo, and everyone has decided that guilds should not give bonuses that effect the arena, the rule has been disallowed for now (I think.)

@all: discussion of spectral hand cast through familiar taking place in the tavern...put your two cents in.

SoulLord, I'm still a little skeptical about the feasablity of your 8 Intelligence familiar deliver touch attacks for you VIA spectral hand. It just seems wrong. I can't prove otherwise, though. We'll let TelinArtho dig around. It's HIS loss, anyhow.

+ pertinate snips from fight

V draws a scroll of spectral hand, stays where he is (he can't move any farther away), and uses his rod of silent spell to cast spectral hand from the scroll, sharing it with Ganon.

Rolling the spectral hand's HP:

1d4 = 4.

The spectral hand has 4 hp and has an AC of 28 (22 + 6 (int mod)).

--- round 6

V stays put and begins casting ghoul touch from memory designating Ganon as the "toucher" to load his familiar's spectral hand.

V completes his spell, charging his familiar's hand. Ganon directs it to attack Aq as part of the casting (only possible with touch spells). This pops Ganon's invisibility. Aq is NOT caught flat-footed, however, as he can see the hand the whole time.

Attack roll for G's spectral hand vs. Aq's touch AC of 15:

2 + 2 (hand) + 3 (opponent wearing metal armor) + 8 (melee) = 15. HIT!

Aq Fortitude save vs. Ghoul Touch (DC 20):

13 + 5 (Fort) = 18. FAIL.

Using a scroll is basically like casting a spell.

Share Spells: At the master’s option, he may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) he casts on himself also affect his familiar. The familiar must be within 5 feet at the time of casting to receive the benefit.
If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the familiar if it moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the familiar again even if it returns to the master before the duration expires. Additionally, the master may cast a spell with a target of “You” on his familiar (as a touch range spell) instead of on himself.
A master and his familiar can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the familiar’s type (magical beast).

Spectral Hand
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Effect: One spectral hand
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
Target= ???
A ghostly, glowing hand shaped from your life force materializes and moves as you desire, allowing you to deliver low-level, touch range spells at a distance. On casting the spell, you lose 1d4 hit points that return when the spell ends (even if it is dispelled), but not if the hand is destroyed. (The hit points can be healed as normal.) For as long as the spell lasts, any touch range spell of 4th level or lower that you cast can be delivered by the spectral hand. The spell gives you a +2 bonus on your melee touch attack roll, and attacking with the hand counts normally as an attack. The hand always strikes from your direction. The hand cannot flank targets like a creature can. After it delivers a spell, or if the hand goes beyond the spell range, goes out of your sight, the hand returns to you and hovers.
The hand is incorporeal and thus cannot be harmed by normal weapons. It has improved evasion (half damage on a failed Reflex save and no damage on a successful save), your save bonuses, and an AC of at least 22. Your Intelligence modifier applies to the hand’s AC as if it were the hand’s Dexterity modifier. The hand has 1 to 4 hit points, the same number that you lost in creating it

Ghoul Touch
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Living humanoid touched
Duration: 1d6+2 rounds
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
Imbuing you with negative energy, this spell allows you to paralyze a single living humanoid for the duration of the spell with a successful melee touch attack.
Additionally, the paralyzed subject exudes a carrion stench that causes all living creatures (except you) in a 10-foot-radius spread to become sickened (Fortitude negates). A neutralize poison spell removes the effect from a sickened creature, and creatures immune to poison are unaffected by the stench.
Material Component: A small scrap of cloth taken from clothing worn by a ghoul, or a pinch of earth from a ghoul’s lair.

Deliver Touch Spells (Su): If the master is 3rd level or higher, a familiar can deliver touch spells for him. If the master and the familiar are in contact at the time the master casts a touch spell, he can designate his familiar as the “toucher.” The familiar can then deliver the touch spell just as the master could. As usual, if the master casts another spell before the touch is delivered, the touch spell dissipates.

Activate the Spell: Activating a scroll requires reading the spell from the scroll. The character must be able to see and read the writing on the scroll. Activating a scroll spell requires no material components or focus. (The creator of the scroll provided these when scribing the scroll.) Note that some spells are effective only when cast on an item or items. In such a case, the scroll user must provide the item when activating the spell. Activatinga scroll spell is subject to disruption just as casting a normally prepared spell would be. Using a scroll is like casting a spell for purposes of arcane spell failure chance.
To have any chance of activating a scroll spell, the scroll user must meet the following requirements.
• The spell must be of the correct type (arcane or divine). Arcane spellcasters (wizards, sorcerers, and bards) can only use scrolls containing arcane spells, and divine spellcasters (clerics, druids, paladins, and rangers) can only use scrolls containing divine spells. (The type of scroll a character creates is also determined by his or her class.)
• The user must have the spell on his or her class list.
• The user must have the requisite ability score.
If the user meets all the requirements noted above, and her caster level is at least equal to the spell’s caster level, she can automatically activate the spell without a check. If she meets all three requirements but her own caster level is lower than the scroll spell’s caster level, then she has to make a caster level check (DC = scroll’s caster level + 1) to cast the spell successfully. If she fails, she must make a DC 5 Wisdom check to avoid a mishap (see Scroll Mishaps, below). A natural roll of 1 always fails, whatever the modifiers.
Determine Effect: A spell successfully activated from a scroll works exactly like a spell prepared and cast the normal way. Assume the scroll spell’s caster level is always the minimum level required to cast the spell for the character who scribed the scroll (usually twice the spell’s level, minus 1), unless the caster specifically desires otherwise.

----

Attacks: Some spell descriptions refer to attacking. All offensive combat actions, even those that don’t damage opponents are considered attacks. Attempts to turn or rebuke undead count as attacks. All spells that opponents resist with saving throws, that deal damage, or that otherwise harm or hamper subjects are attacks. Spells that summon monsters or other allies are not attacks because the spells themselves don’t harm anyone.

COMBINING MAGICAL EFFECTS
Spells or magical effects usually work as described, no matter how many other spells or magical effects happen to be operating in the same area or on the same recipient. Except in special cases, a spell does not affect the way another spell operates. Whenever a spell has a specific effect on other spells, the spell description explains that effect. Several other general rules apply when spells or magical effects operate in the same place:
Stacking Effects: Spells that provide bonuses or penalties on attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and other attributes usually do not stack with themselves. More generally, two bonuses of the same type don’t stack even if they come from different spells (or from effects other than spells; see Bonus Types, above).
Different Bonus Names: The bonuses or penalties from two different spells stack if the modifiers are of different types. A bonus that isn’t named stacks with any bonus.
Same Effect More than Once in Different Strengths: In cases when two or more identical spells are operating in the same area or on the same target, but at different strengths, only the best one applies.
Same Effect with Differing Results: The same spell can sometimes produce varying effects if applied to the same recipient more than once. Usually the last spell in the series trumps the others. None of the previous spells are actually removed or dispelled, but their effects become irrelevant while the final spell in the series lasts.
One Effect Makes Another Irrelevant: Sometimes, one spell can render a later spell irrelevant. Both spells are still active, but one has rendered the other useless in some fashion.
Multiple Mental Control Effects: Sometimes magical effects that establish mental control render each other irrelevant, such as a spell that removes the subjects ability to act. Mental controls that don’t remove the recipient’s ability to act usually do not interfere with each other. If a creature is under the mental control of two or more creatures, it tends to obey each to the best of its ability, and to the extent of the control each effect allows. If the controlled creature receives conflicting orders simultaneously, the competing controllers must make opposed Charisma checks to determine which one the creature obeys.
Spells with Opposite Effects: Spells with opposite effects apply normally, with all bonuses, penalties, or changes accruing in the order that they apply. Some spells negate or counter each other. This is a special effect that is noted in a spell’s description.
Instantaneous Effects: Two or more spells with instantaneous durations work cumulatively when they affect the same target.

Necromancy
Necromancy spells manipulate the power of death, unlife, and the life force. Spells involving undead creatures make up a large part of this school.

AIMING A SPELL
You must make some choice about whom the spell is to affect or where the effect is to originate, depending on the type of spell. The next entry in a spell description defines the spell’s target (or targets), its effect, or its area, as appropriate.
Target or Targets: Some spells have a target or targets. You cast these spells on creatures or objects, as defined by the spell itself. You must be able to see or touch the target, and you must specifically choose that target. You do not have to select your target until you finish casting the spell.
If the target of a spell is yourself (the spell description has a line that reads Target: You), you do not receive a saving throw, and spell resistance does not apply. The Saving Throw and Spell Resistance lines are omitted from such spells.
Some spells restrict you to willing targets only. Declaring yourself as a willing target is something that can be done at any time (even if you’re flat-footed or it isn’t your turn). Unconscious creatures are automatically considered willing, but a character who is conscious but immobile or helpless (such as one who is bound, cowering, grappling, paralyzed, pinned, or stunned) is not automatically willing.
Some spells allow you to redirect the effect to new targets or areas after you cast the spell. Redirecting a spell is a move action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
Effect: Some spells create or summon things rather than affecting things that are already present.
You must designate the location where these things are to appear, either by seeing it or defining it. Range determines how far away an effect can appear, but if the effect is mobile it can move regardless of the spell’s range.
Ray: Some effects are rays. You aim a ray as if using a ranged weapon, though typically you make a ranged touch attack rather than a normal ranged attack. As with a ranged weapon, you can fire into the dark or at an invisible creature and hope you hit something. You don’t have to see the creature you’re trying to hit, as you do with a targeted spell. Intervening creatures and obstacles, however, can block your line of sight or provide cover for the creature you’re aiming at.
If a ray spell has a duration, it’s the duration of the effect that the ray causes, not the length of time the ray itself persists.
If a ray spell deals damage, you can score a critical hit just as if it were a weapon. A ray spell threatens a critical hit on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a successful critical hit.
Area: Some spells affect an area. Sometimes a spell description specifies a specially defined area, but usually an area falls into one of the categories defined below.
Regardless of the shape of the area, you select the point where the spell originates, but otherwise you don’t control which creatures or objects the spell affects. The point of origin of a spell is always a grid intersection. When determining whether a given creature is within the area of a spell, count out the distance from the point of origin in squares just as you do when moving a character or when determining the range for a ranged attack. The only difference is that instead of counting from the center of one square to the center of the next, you count from intersection to intersection.
You can count diagonally across a square, but remember that every second diagonal counts as 2 squares of distance. If the far edge of a square is within the spell’s area, anything within that square is within the spell’s area. If the spell’s area only touches the near edge of a square, however, anything within that square is unaffected by the spell.
Creatures: A spell with this kind of area affects creatures directly (like a targeted spell), but it affects all creatures in an area of some kind rather than individual creatures you select. The area might be a spherical burst , a cone-shaped burst, or some other shape.
Many spells affect “living creatures,” which means all creatures other than constructs and undead. Creatures in the spell’s area that are not of the appropriate type do not count against the creatures affected.
Objects: A spell with this kind of area affects objects within an area you select (as Creatures, but affecting objects instead).
Other: A spell can have a unique area, as defined in its description.
Line of Effect: A line of effect is a straight, unblocked path that indicates what a spell can affect. A line of effect is canceled by a solid barrier. It’s like line of sight for ranged weapons, except that it’s not blocked by fog, darkness, and other factors that limit normal sight.
You must have a clear line of effect to any target that you cast a spell on or to any space in which you wish to create an effect. You must have a clear line of effect to the point of origin of any spell you cast.

Touch Spells and Holding the Charge: In most cases, if you don’t discharge a touch spell on the round you cast it, you can hold the charge (postpone the discharge of the spell) indefinitely. You can make touch attacks round after round. If you cast another spell, the touch spell dissipates.
Some touch spells allow you to touch multiple targets as part of the spell. You can’t hold the charge of such a spell; you must touch all targets of the spell in the same round that you finish casting the spell.
Discharge: Occasionally a spells lasts for a set duration or until triggered or discharged.

Spell-Like Abilities: Usually, a spell-like ability works just like the spell of that name. A few spell-like abilities are unique; these are explained in the text where they are described.
A spell-like ability has no verbal, somatic, or material component, nor does it require a focus or have an XP cost. The user activates it mentally. Armor never affects a spell-like ability’s use, even if the ability resembles an arcane spell with a somatic component.
A spell-like ability has a casting time of 1 standard action unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description. In all other ways, a spell-like ability functions just like a spell.
Spell-like abilities are subject to spell resistance and to being dispelled by dispel magic. They do not function in areas where magic is suppressed or negated. Spell-like abilities cannot be used to counterspell, nor can they be counterspelled.
Some creatures are actually sorcerers of a sort. They cast arcane spells as sorcerers do, using components when required. In fact, an individual creature could have some spell-like abilities and also cast other spells as a sorcerer.

Touch Spells in Combat: Many spells have a range of touch. To use these spells, you cast the spell and then touch the subject, either in the same round or any time later. In the same round that you cast the spell, you may also touch (or attempt to touch) the target. You may take your move before casting the spell, after touching the target, or between casting the spell and touching the target. You can automatically touch one friend or use the spell on yourself, but to touch an opponent, you must succeed on an attack roll.
Touch Attacks: Touching an opponent with a touch spell is considered to be an armed attack and therefore does not provoke attacks of opportunity. However, the act of casting a spell does provoke an attack of opportunity. Touch attacks come in two types: melee touch attacks and ranged touch attacks. You can score critical hits with either type of attack. Your opponent’s AC against a touch attack does not include any armor bonus, shield bonus, or natural armor bonus. His size modifier, Dexterity modifier, and deflection bonus (if any) all apply normally.
Holding the Charge: If you don’t discharge the spell in the round when you cast the spell, you can hold the discharge of the spell (hold the charge) indefinitely. You can continue to make touch attacks round after round. You can touch one friend as a standard action or up to six friends as a full-round action. If you touch anything or anyone while holding a charge, even unintentionally, the spell discharges. If you cast another spell, the touch spell dissipates. Alternatively, you may make a normal unarmed attack (or an attack with a natural weapon) while holding a charge. In this case, you aren’t considered armed and you provoke attacks of opportunity as normal for the attack. (If your unarmed attack or natural weapon attack doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity, neither does this attack.) If the attack hits, you deal normal damage for your unarmed attack or natural weapon and the spell discharges. If the attack misses, you are still holding the charge.

Activate Magic Item
Many magic items don’t need to be activated. However, certain magic items need to be activated, especially potions, scrolls, wands, rods, and staffs. Activating a magic item is a standard action (unless the item description indicates otherwise).
Spell Completion Items: Activating a spell completion item is the equivalent of casting a spell. It requires concentration and provokes attacks of opportunity. You lose the spell if your concentration is broken, and you can attempt to activate the item while on the defensive, as with casting a spell.
Spell Trigger, Command Word, or Use-Activated Items: Activating any of these kinds of items does not require concentration and does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

Spell-Like Abilities: Using a spell-like ability works like casting a spell in that it requires concentration and provokes attacks of opportunity. Spell-like abilities can be disrupted. If your concentration is broken, the attempt to use the ability fails, but the attempt counts as if you had used the ability. The casting time of a spell-like ability is 1 standard action, unless the ability description notes otherwise.
Using a Spell-Like Ability on the Defensive: You may attempt to use a spell-like ability on the defensive, just as with casting a spell. If the Concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) fails, you can’t use the ability, but the attempt counts as if you had used the ability.

What does "spell-like ability" have to do with the spectral hand discussion?

TheMagister - there's a few things that I have a problem with:

First of all - where are the character sheets - and, more importantly, the tactics?

Second of all - Vandelar can only use his rod of Silence once in the fight (3 uses/day with the 1/3rd rule is 1 use/fight) - so Mirror Image and Spectral hand are not silent.

Third of all - Ghoul touch does not get a +3 to hit someone in metal armor - that's shocking grasp. So that attack misses. However, since the attack was made - the familiar is made visible - and I believe Vandelar is too. However, even if he isn't Aquin gets to make a couple of crossbow attacks against the familiar to kill him...

I actually have no problem with the familiar delivering touch spells with the spectral hand - so I see no need to argue it at this time (if I find something to dispute it for - obviously I will make the argument in a timely manner)
Vathelokai

10-09-05, 10:14 AM
If the familiar steps away from Vandalar (becoming visible) then attacks, the invis does not dismiss. The familiar could then hop back under Vandalar's coat and become invisible again (but only because of the concealment of the clothes; the spell does not effect the familiar again).

It should also be noted that if the a mirror image of the familiar is destroyed, one of the masters images is destroyed as well (thus says Rules of the Game).

As for spectral hand, the result of the long winded discussion was that you cannot cast spectral hand though a familiar.

I was pretty sure that you got a bonus to your attack for charging not a penalty.
"Attacking on a Charge: After moving, you may make a single melee attack. You get a +2 bonus on the attack roll. and take a –2 penalty to your AC until the start of your next turn."
So his modifiers are 8+6+2+1+2=19, which hits you.

@ Begferdeth

Yeah, me neither. I just dug up relevant info and posted it. The spell-like ability avenue is the only angle I considered even plausible to attack the action from, however there is no reason to say that the scroll spell cast with a metamagic rod was "spell-like" instead of a "spell." At least not without saying that scolls, in general, cant be shared.

The other was that spectral hand is either not a valid share spell or that the familar is unable to control spectral hand. As I reviewed the rules it seems to me that spectral hand was not well written, and effectivly turns a touch spell into a ray. None the less, I think that spectral hand is a valid share spell, and I do not think that the familar would have any problem using it.

I wasn't aware you could pick an item off the ground 5' away. I thought it had to be in your square. But, I see your point and I think it makes sense.

@Luni

Memorex fight has an issue. Hold person is a 3rd level spell, meaning when it was cast he had 3 spell levels left. He has a pearl of power 2nd, which means he cannot recall that spell. Then he casts hold person again, meaning he has 0-spell levels. Even if he recalls a spell, he won't be able to cast Vamp touch.

I promise I will edit all things I can. I was in the hospital last night until early in the morning, so I didn't get to do it last night.

Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Effect: One spectral hand
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: NoThe target/effect of spectral hand is the hand, not "you," "personal," or "creature." So it cannot be shared.

Since I've argued on both sides of this, I declair that as my rules interpretation.

Is it silly and badly written: Yes! It's written more like a conjuration with a material component/arcane focus of 'HP'. But its the Rules As Written. Unless we make a house rule, I don't think it can be allowed.

@Luni

Good catch. Problem fixed. He recalled Mirror Image via Pearl, cast Hold Person and CdG with Chill Touch.

DUH. I'll get right on it.

Edit: Sheets and Tactics added.

1) Vandelar's tactics are now broken, since his familiar can't share in spectral hand. I'm going to have to petition him for new tactics. Please be patient with me.

2) So, about King Uther getting hurt...what's up with our Sdentch/Kraegin quest?

Edit: Sent to SoulLord by PM:
Your "share spectral hand with Ganon" tactic has been deemed invalid because the effect of a spectral hand is the hand itself, and because it is not a "Range: Personal" spell.

I need new tactics from you so I can edit the fight. I'll give you till Monday night (sooner is, of course, better than later).

Honestly, I think this is a bad idea. Now that he has a chance to see the fight, my tactics and some of the rolls - he's able to rewrite his tactics because you found out they broke?

Even without his familiar delivering the spells, he should be able to follow through on the spells accordingly.

As to the quest - I'm sure Uther will be able to keep up or to make up the time later - he's pretty good about stuff like that.

I see your point.

Man, I hate being wishy-washy.

I'm tempted to forgo the casting of the spectral hand spell and just put the ghoul touch on his familiar.

I want you to understand that he would immediately see that his character would be foolish to depend on spectral hand as a method of delivering touch spells because of his lousy strength (it specifies that it counts as a "melee touch attack"). His bonuses would amount to +2 (hand) - 2 (str) = 0.

He's not stupid.

I just want to be as fair as I possibly can, and I know you understand that.

Edit: I'm going to edit the fight with him using ghoul touch on his familiar. It just seems like the fairest thing to do that still keeps with his "paralyze him and CDG him" tactic.

Actually - reading through Vandelar's tactics pointed out another error. Ghoul touch doesn't affect Aquin!

The Ghoul Touch spell affects one living humanoid (essentially the same group of targets as Enlarge Person). Given this - and the fact that a sahaugin is a monstrous humanoid (and therefore not a humanoid) - it shouldn't affect him.

Arnt the tactic changes rewrit just from where the rule violation happened? At this point, seeing as both your initial tactics are public. Wouldnt you both get a chance to write what your tactics would be from that breakage.

I still lean on the side of - "spectral hand was intended to be usable by share or accidentally not marked target: self. Of course them Necromancies are pretty strange.

Necromancy
"Necromancy spells manipulate the power of death, unlife, and the life force. Spells involving undead creatures make up a large part of this school."

Now, saying that a necromancy spell aught to be a conjuration is not unheard of...

Cure Light - Conjuration (Healing )
* Though it should be Conjuration (Positive )
VS
Inflict Light - Necromancy (Oh necro doesnt have subschools )

If spectral hand were a Conjuration it would be Conjuration (Creation ), Just as Inflict would be a Conjuration (Negative ). In which case the target would be the hand, not the caster. Perhaps some fiddle about the caster must have a life force but not really needed.

Further, for sblock sake, the hand would wink out of existance due to an antimagic field, and would wink back in at the same place were it not for the overwrite where it says the hand returns to you when it goes out of your perception.

And Ghoul Touch would be transmutation. :P

@The Magister = OR, you could call the spectral hand cast (effecting vandelar ), then simply proceed with tactics, any directions to have the hawk touch becomes an actual peck or talon.

hmm, then again

cast spectral hand on ganon while hidden
cast ghoul touch for ganon to deliver using the hand (sahuagin are humanoids) dc 20 vs +5 fort save,

Cast spectral hand on gannon? Why? Doesnt take an action to direct the hand, it responds to your wishes within your LOS. "Effect: One spectral hand" - technically a d4 hd incorporeal undead.. or negative energy elemental, or something. The same actions could have taken place had the hand been cast normally on Vandelar. Then when ghoul touch was cast Vandelar could have designated himself as the toucher and then the hand and the bird both get actions (one step after their promary ) - the hand attacks, bird does something birdy like squak, and then proceed to sticky coup de grace. Unless the modifiers are changed enough to effect the outcome of the already rolled d20.

The Ghoul Touch spell affects one living humanoid (essentially the same group of targets as Enlarge Person). Given this - and the fact that a sahaugin is a monstrous humanoid (and therefore not a humanoid) - it shouldn't affect him.

Is that "too bad, shoulda known better, for Vandelar" or "now its time to rewrite the tactics from both sides?"

They pick the target of the spell when casting is complete.

Aside: Personally, I wouldn't allow this, as people would just move towards cover so that they can negate the spell.

Current problems with the fight:

1. First of all, Aquin has a +8 listen modifier - which helps him a fair amount when listening over the +5 that you were giving him.
2. After Aquin has drawn his weapons, he definitely sees where the familiar went and where he disappeared. Since my intention, stated in my tactics is to close to melee - after my melee weapons are already drawn - I should head in that direction.
3. Since Ganon is tiny - he has to enter my square in order to attack me and also does not threaten a square. This means that after I am blinded and he attacks me - I know exactly where he is. I still have a 50% miss chance when attacking - but I do get a full attack. This whole listen business of randomizing within 15ft is irrevelant, because I know the hawk is tiny and therefore must be within arms reach (and actually in my square).
4. When Ganon approaches and when he withdraws, he draws AoO because of my reach to 5ft. So there's a bunch of AoO that you have missed because of this.
5. Ganon's AC is 18, not 20 as you have listed. I don't see any attacks that it made a difference on - but the two crossbows on the second ghoul touch should've been a full attack (since I would've closed with Vandelar and Ganon when Ganon fled) with a trident and my short swords and a bite. Plus all of the AoO from them.
6. Distances need to be checked. I'm at 0,16 for most of the meat of the fight and Vandelar is at 0,30 - a distance of 70ft. His hawk has a move of 60ft - meaning in order to reach me - it has to charge in (which drops its AC to 16). In round 10, Vandelar is 75ft away when he casts Scorching Ray - the spell has a range of 30ft at 3rd level.

I've been wondering about that, since it came in my tactics. Can a tiny creature charge? Charge is only allowed if your movement is not hindered, but tiny creatures have to enter their opponents space to attack. It makes sense that a hawk could charge, but I don't know if entering your opponents space 'hinders' movement.
SoulLord

10-10-05, 11:01 AM
I think it's different being in danger than being hindered.

the later is reserved in this instance for things that slow or hamper your movement.

also just as a note Ganon shares my skills among them tumble so he can try to avoid AoO due to entering or leaving.

A tiny creature can charge - but they will almost always draw at least one AoO, because of moving out of a threatened square.

FYI familars share skill ranks of their masters but use their own stat mods when they use that skill. This means that they can be better at a skill (or worse) than their master based on what the relevant stat is.

10-10-05, 11:17 AM
...Here’s what it means to have a clear path. First, you must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. (If this space is occupied or otherwise blocked, you can’t charge.) Second, if any line from your starting space to the ending space passes through a square that blocks movement, slows movement, or contains a creature (even an ally), you can’t charge. (Helpless creatures don’t stop a charge.)Hmmm...

I definitely find it odd that every one of my javelins hit but my grapple attempt missed. I was getting to be in short supply of them, however, so perhaps I should pick up a few more or maybe add a crossbow or something for cases like these. After this fight, I would pick up a tatoo of skate, but both that and the monk speed bonus are enhancement bonuses, so they don't stack.

Hmmm, a fast monk with a crossbow could be scary, particularly around level 9 or so when you move as fast with one move as your opponent moves with two. This might be something I have to think about. Of course, I've seen barbarian/psychic warrior builds that try to do just that, except they use longbows.

Right, then. Taking them one at a time:

Current problems with the fight:

1. First of all, Aquin has a +8 listen modifier - which helps him a fair amount when listening over the +5 that you were giving him.

True. Rats. It has a +5 on both of the skills over and under it. I'll edit it in.

2. After Aquin has drawn his weapons, he definitely sees where the familiar went and where he disappeared. Since my intention, stated in my tactics is to close to melee - after my melee weapons are already drawn - I should head in that direction.

Alright. What you say is true, but put me into the difficult decision of deciding to either 1) follow your tactics to the letter, or 2) do what would be best for you.

Your Tactics state this:Essentially, Aquin's tactic is to close as much as Vandelar will let me while (hopefully) Aquin is able to disrupt a few of his spells.

If I am somehow able to get into charge range, drop the crossbows, quickdraw the trident and charge. If he is set up to negate a charge, but I am still one move action away, just move up and attack.

Essentially, my priority is to close - but I really expect him to try to avoid me.

If I don't see him, and the familiar is in sight, shoot both crossbows at it in an attempt to bring it down.

So, while it is stated in your tactics to close to melee, Aq had no sight of an opponent with which to close, just a general direction in which he "thought" he was. He wasn't even in charge range. All Aq could do at this point was try to knock out V's primary weapon (Ganon) and then try to track him down. You had nada in your tactics for invisibility.

I was actually overly kind to you in round 6 when I had Aq drop his x-bows and melee with the familiar. Your tactics stated that you wanted Aq to x-bow it to death. However, it was the "best" thing for him to do at the time, and I think anyone with 1/2 a brain would agree that I did the right thing, even if it was contradictory to your tactics.

Aq is wielding ranged weapons. He don't threaten nuthin'. I'm pretty sure (yep...just looked over the fight) that each time Aq was touched he was wielding x-bows.

Also, when a creature is blinded, they don't threaten any squares. It's in the PHB glossary.

4. When Ganon approaches and when he withdraws, he draws AoO because of my reach to 5ft. So there's a bunch of AoO that you have missed because of this.

Right you are. In round 6 IOAq an AoO. I'll edit it in.

SoulLord's sheet is wrong (and damned hard to read, to boot). Looking in the MM, pg. 273, under "Hawk", I find that a normal, everyday hawk has an AC of 17 (+2 size, +3 Dex, +2 natural). A hawk familiar gets an extra +3 natural armor when he has a level 6 master. The AC is 20.

6. Distances need to be checked. I'm at 0,16 for most of the meat of the fight and Vandelar is at 0,30 - a distance of 70ft. His hawk has a move of 60ft - meaning in order to reach me - it has to charge in (snip...)

Aw, bloody hell. You're right as rain. I'll have V move forward all of 10' (which will alter the Listen checks yet AGAIN) so that G can reach Aq in a single move.

In round 10, Vandelar is 75ft away when he casts Scorching Ray - the spell has a range of 30ft at 3rd level.

Right as the wet stuff from on high again. I'll have V move forward again to kill Aq.

Before I go get busy, tell me what you think of this.

Well I would rather much prefer If you didnt have to edit and rerun parts of the fight ... Again.

I don't see How Aquin can change the outcome of the fight after being blinded.

All I see is that It might be possible is That Vandelar has to spend aditional valuable resources.

Still If you feel you have to Edit and rerun parts of the figth here are a few things.

Gannon has a decent tumble skill to avoid AoO.

As to have a more productive Discussion what do you suggest to change in my sheet

This stuff...

...doesn't make any sense to me.

You have it on some of your skills and on Ganon's AC, and it's just confusing.

That's why I had to look up G's AC (and found that your sheet was wrong). I didn't know which was his correct AC.

I just went through my two character's sheets and modified a bunch of stuff. Once I pitlorded a few fights, things just started jumping out at me.

I guess what I want for the tactics against the familiar is to be consistent. In the first case, you have me "do what's best" by dropping the crossbows and full attacking, but then a couple of rounds later decide it is best for me to step back and fire two crossbows at +5 (when a full attack would be 4 attacks at +6 and one attack at +4). Since it is quite plainly stated that I would rather melee than shoot at range, I think this should be followed. However, I would accept you being consistent with it.

Anyway - it is unlikely that I'll win the fight - I'm mostly ironing this stuff out so that incorrect information isn't carried forward. In other words, if you don't feel the need to fix the errors, I am fine with that.

I hear you.

And yeah, it's unlikely you'll win. Darn near impossible, in fact.

Even if you kill Ganon, all you'll do is inconvenience Vandelar into questing for another familiar. (@Telin: my poor, poor snake...)

I don't mind editting the fight at all; I'd want the same thing were I in your shoes (heck, Torgirr IS in Aquin's shoes, only worse. Did you see that fight?!).

So far, I'm gonna fix the AoO in round 6, and change all of Aq's listen checks, and (if you make me) move V around so that G is in range to move/touch and so that the scorching ray is legal.

Is that enough?

Edit: Both of you check the Prison. SoulLord for semi-serious issues, Telin for good news.

If struck for damage while casting a spell, and the Concentration check is failed, that spell is lost. This is true no matter what the source of the spell (memory, item, spell-like). I dunno if you were also asking this, but in case of multiple spells on a single scroll, the whole scroll is not lost, just that one spell on it. Hope that helps.

Hey guys, I just got a major load of school work, including a physics project, meaning I'm going to have very little time to post...That is, only enough to post once, maybe twice a day. Also, this means I can't run my fight. I know I said I would have it done yesterday, but my mom woke me up after only 5 hours of sleep (the day before I had SAT testing, then had to go to our homecoming football game for JROTC, and then went to the dance (which I couldn't get out of as I had a date)) to go work a hotdog stand at an airshow, so that blew my whole plan for the day. Is there anyone wanting a credit? I have both sets of tactics, so there'll be no waiting for them. Thanks in advance.

Crovax vs Brilf (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7470127) is here.

Tough battle to run because of such a huge amount of tactics for both players.

@nightbanegod - you actually weren't too bad off if you are grappling - and you probably should have delved more into that possibility (because it was pretty likely).

@sunwolf - your ranged attacks were useless and you probably knew they would be. As such, I might've suggested foregoing the bow altogether and try holding a tanglefoot bag instead (drawing one would've been fine if you didn't specifically say to put away your bow first).

Anyway - let me know if there are any problems. I still have one ML check to make - which I just remembered (for the Animal Affinity), but if there's anything else - feel free to let me know.

You don't pick the target or center of a spell until the spell is finished being cast. So if the target you wanted at the beginning of the casting moves - and he is still in range - he can still be targetted. If he moves out of range and another viable target is in range - he can be targetted instead. If the spell only requires a location, you specify the location when the spell is completed.

Stupid lizard-breath! Thinking I, Shazzelin, was an elf! It is really simple, I will explain it to you one last time:

You have those pink fleshy type beings, those are called humans. When they have two growths on their chest, they are called women, when they don't, they are called men. When they have pointy ears, they are called elves. Very short humans are called children, but if these children have hairy feet, they are called halflings, and if these children have hairy chins, they are called dwarves. But there are also different kinds of dwarves, like gray dwarves and deep dwarves, but although there are gray elves, deep elves are called drow or dark elves, but there are high elves as well, also wild and wood elves. There are also beings like half-elves and half-orcs, but don't concern yourself with them. See, simple!

@King Uther - I am updating my characters using the above amounts. If this changes if you get a chance to update the fight - let me know.

Yoriko Obato (Mind Rogue) 1384 vs Alac Rensellaer (Pauper) 1241 is Up

fight (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7461504&postcount=480)

I didn't expect a great performance given the default tactics, but I would like some clarifications:

#1 -

General tactics: Begin with scroll in one hand, wand in the other.

alac +2(3) Start Location (3) South (0,-24) with scroll in hand

I realize the rules suggest that the use of a scroll requires the use of verbal and somatic components, and specifically note that using a scroll suffers arcane spell failure chances (DMG, p.238). However, given that the scroll was of a Stilled spell, why would the somatic component still be required?

What is the interaction between scrolls and the Still Spell feat?

#2 -

I realize the default tactics seem to draw a sharp distinction between melee and ranged opponents, and that the pitlord made that distinction (in the melee direction) early. However...

If opponent is missile fighter, fire wand and duck behind full cover,
forcing opponent to move to be able to shoot back at me. (If he doesn't
move, cast entropic shield, then move back on following round and fire wand
again, continuing to fire/move then move/fire on subsequent rounds; in this
way I get two wand shots to his one ranged attack.)

Alac fires another volley triggering Yoricos ready action +6(23) -2 distance Hit! dmg (3) the javelin barely grazes alac's shoulder
MM Damage(2)+2 =4 then he moves away to (13,-26) behind the rock and Cover!

This suggests that Alac has changed his mind given his opponent's shift in tactics and is now treating her as a ranged attacker. However...

Round 10

Yorico feels the sting of the magic missiles and decides to take a break
she moves to (4,-22) and drinks the potion of heal moderate (11)+3 =14

Alac listen (13) vs dc 5+6 distance =11 sucess he listens to his foe retreat to the south and moves closer to (10,-13) reading an action to shoot on sight.

Given that at this point Alac had already been hit by three javelins, it would seem a good time to follow the printed tactics and cast entropic shield, as a 20% miss chance is better than no miss chance.

No need to go back and edit the fight or anything; I know that pitlording is tough, and I doubt either of these changes would change the outcome of the fight. Mostly I'm just curious to know the reasons behind these two decisions on the part of the pitlord to deviate from the (admittedly inadequate) default tactics.

1.-Well I have always assumed that even if it's a still spell you still have to unravel the scroll with both hands to read it.

2.-I treated her all the way as a tank you taking cover was not as much to avoid her ranged attacks but to prevent a possible charge from her by putting an obstacle in the middle.

Your foe had only 5 javelins unfortunately for you she didn't miss a single shot with them.

Hope it makes things more clear.

@Telin

The fight, with all of the changes, still ends up the same except you bleed out before Casgish is CDG'd. The reason that it changes that way is due to a magic missile targetted at you, which delays an arrow wound to Ielenia, so she still hits you. No deaths were reported from our sources from abroad. For the first week since some time, it looks like the regular deaths and mutilations nicknamed Crovax’s Curse have abated. Sorry i've not been posting very often this past week, i'm down with a rather bad case of some illness i can't pronounce and most assuredly cannot spell. I'm doing my best to keep up with things, but the drugs the doctor gave me have me sleeping as soon as i take them. I'll try to post as soon as possible.

I will not be able to run my fight this week and would like to be taken off the pitlords list for a week or so. I'll continue to run the quests and campaign as best i can and i assure my players that it'll pick up once i can make it around my own house.

thanks,

1.-Well I have always assumed that even if it's a still spell you still have to unravel the scroll with both hands to read it.

Can you give me a rules reference on that, or is it a 'house rule' you use?

2.-I treated her all the way as a tank you taking cover was not as much to avoid her ranged attacks but to prevent a possible charge from her by putting an obstacle in the middle.

That makes sense.

Hey TM, thanks for running this long fight.

I only have one bone to pick -- to use the combat reflexes feat, you don't need to have an opponent to bash at (I do believe that this is the ruling we've used in the arena before.) All you need to do is take the attack action each round with a melee weapon, and possibly swing at the ground or a tree or something. It's a fact that you can use the attack action to attack inanimate objects, and it's a fact that I was using a melee weapon. I believe that this is also consistent with the way it's been ruled in the arena before, but I cannot check due to the lack of search on this web site. Rules of the Game makes a passing reference to combat expertise, saying that you need to "take the attack action" to take advantage of it.

This would increase my AC by one (in truthfulness, I hadn't remembered the +1 for altitude Amion was getting, I was expecting him to hit on a natural 20 only), which would mean that two of his hits (hit roll 18) become misses. As far as I can tell, this doesn't change the flow of the fight at all, but the fight would continue at least a few rounds.

For the remaining few rounds note that I do not have -1 to hit him for altitude. The table http://d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatModifiers.htm does give +1 to hit when you're high, but not -1 to hit when you're low.

Actually, there's another error. My tactics specify to use force screen, then melee, if the first force screen runs out. So on round 48, my correct action was to 5' step away, use force screen. This shifts all my attacks down by one, but his fatal blow ends up not hitting me.

Don't forget that my attacks after he lands are trip attacks.

@Gonbow: I think it's the second time I see you do this, so for your personal edification, summoned monster only ever get a single SR check to penetrate protection spells. From SRD (http://d20srd.org/srd/naturalSpecialAbilities.htm#spellResista nce): "Check spell resistance only once for any particular casting of a spell or use of a spell-like ability. If spell resistance fails the first time, it fails each time the creature encounters that same casting of the spell. Likewise, if the spell resistance succeeds the first time, it always succeeds."

Doesn't affect the fight -- the first SR check was failed, and the one SR check that passed later resulted in a miss on the attack roll.

Also, remember from my tactics that the CLW are coming first from memory. So on round 11 I regained 7+4=11 hit points, not 7+1=8 hit points.

Lastly, shouldn't the Raven be dying?

well the closest thing I can find is this

To protect it from wrinkling or tearing, a scroll is rolled up from both ends to form a double cylinder. (This also helps the user unroll the scroll quickly.) The scroll is placed in a tube of ivory, jade, leather, metal, or wood. Most scroll cases are inscribed with magic symbols which often identify the owner or the spells stored on the scrolls inside. The symbols often hide magic traps.

As far as I know, by the RAW, you always need two hands to cast from a scroll, regardless of the components of the spell you are casting. To my knowledge, a metamagic'd scroll would not cause that to change. A better question would be if there is something that says that the metamagic portion of the scroll says that it *does change the casting procedure for a scroll.....in D&D, I have found, the rules generally operate on a "if it doesn't say you can, then you can't" premise (have learned this the hard way more than once....ask ToK...I'm sure he's tired of convincing me of it LOL)

As far as I know, by the RAW, you always need two hands to cast from a scroll, regardless of the components of the spell you are casting.

If that's true, I can't find where the rules actually say that. In fact, there doesn't appear to be any requirement that you actually hold the scroll in your 'hand' - the only requirements for activating a scroll in the DMG is that the user be able to see and thus read the scroll, so in theory a caster could pin a scroll to a wall or simply read a scroll laying on the floor as long as he can (in the DM's opinion, anyway) still make out the symbols therein.

While the DMG also notes that a scroll user must concentrate and suffers arcane spell failure chances for using scrolls, it notes that both of these situations are "just as casting a normally prepared spell". Every set of rules regarding scrolls or spell-completion items notes that using them is basically just like casting spells. Since the Still Spell feat allows spells to be cast without somatic components, and the 'requires a free hand' and 'arcane spell failure' rules for spellcasting are both tied to the use of somatic components, it would seem that a scroll with a spell modified by the Still Spell feat also would not require a free hand for gesturing, nor would it require an arcane spell failure roll for an armored caster. (Note that a scroll of a spell that doesn't have a somatic component, such as holy word, also wouldn't require a free hand for gesturing, nor impose an arcane spell failure chance, for the same reasons.)

I realize that there was a heated conversation regarding scroll spells and the Quicken Spell feat in which it was decided that Quicken Spell doesn't reduce the casting time of a spell on a scroll (a ruling which, IMO, is incorrect - if a scroll of summon monster I requires an entire round to cast - and it does by the FAQ** - then a Quickened summon monster I should be a swift action even if cast from a scroll). If, however, the consensus of the Elders was that, in general, metamagic feats shouldn't apply to spells scribed on scrolls, or on magic items in general, then the point is moot (though I will note that a number of wands in the DMG have spells which have been modified by the Heighten Spell feat, so the latter position would be a definite break from the RAW). [Note that there is at least one feat which is actually pointless to add to a spell by the RAW - since the rules note that the caster doesn't need any material or focus components to cast a spell on a scroll, and that any expensive components will already need to have been provided by the scroll's creator, the Eschew Materials feat is pointless to add to a scroll spell - though since Eschew Materials doesn't increase the level of the spell slot required to cast the spell, it also doesn't increase the cost of the scroll should someone decide to include it anyway, for whatever demented reason.]

[** - the relevant quote from the FAQ: "The sections on spell completion and spell trigger items should include the caveat that activating the item takes as long as casting the stored spell would take. Thus, it takes 1 hour to activate a scroll with an identify spell on it. A scroll or a wand with any of the summon monster spells in it takes a full round to activate, just as casting a summon monster spell does."]

This won't make-or-break my gladiator, but I would like to have a definitive ruling on this, assuming one hasn't been made already, before I spend another 75gp on a useless addition to a magic item.

One thing I wanted to mention (and I have not looked at your character or the fight, so this may not even be an issue) is that, unless you purchased the scroll with the Still Spell feat as a part of the scroll, just having the feat would not give you the ability to use it to affect a scroll. The scroll would need to be Stilled as a part of the scroll, and would need to be purchased as such.

Actually, I'd say it's pretty much worthless anyway since you intend to always use this scroll first and you can draw your wand as part of a move action because it is a weaponlike object.
Pauper

One thing I wanted to mention (and I have not looked at your character or the fight, so this may not even be an issue) is that, unless you purchased the scroll with the Still Spell feat as a part of the scroll

Which I did, and which is why the scroll was CL 3 and cost 150gp (CL3xSL2x25gp).

I now realize that there should also have been a caster level check to get the scroll off, since Alac is only a Sorc2.

Actually, I'd say it's pretty much worthless anyway since you intend to always use this scroll first and you can draw your wand as part of a move action because it is a weaponlike object.

I was not aware of that, so in that sense, yes, for the purpose of drawing a wand vs. starting with the wand in hand, the Still Spell feat on the scroll isn't necessary. With that said, apparently the pitlord wasn't aware of that rule, either, as the opening round consisted of casting the scroll and drawing the wand with no movement, not even a 5-foot step.

I don't normally complain about the pitlords; heck, the time Gonbow completely ignored my listed tactics and played out the fight anyway was one of the more entertaining fights I've read (and it certainly didn't hurt that Alac won ;)). SoulLord's clarification on Alac seeking cover in the late rounds made perfect sense in the context of running the fight, and now that I understand his reasoning, I agree with it. And I doubt the outcome of the fight would change based on the initial ruling on the scroll, as I noted before.

The metamagic feat on the scroll ruling has bigger connotations, though, and I think it's important to get some official word on the subject. For instance, what's the Listen DC for someone to 'find' someone using a scroll with a Silent Spell modified spell, if a Listen check is even allowed? Can such a scroll be used in the area of a silence spell? It seems pretty clear that Empower Spell, Maximize Spell, and Heighten Spell should be allowable on scrolls, since they're not difficult to adjudicate, but what of the other metamagic feats?

Listen dc to find someone casting a silent spell Impossible.

Can such a scroll be used in the area of a silence spell? Yes

Also as for quicken summon monster in a scroll it's possible but it would only reduce the casting time to a standard action.

As for a quickened scroll of magic missile for example it's not possible as it takes a standard action to activate a scroll.

Same issues with tattoos and swift actions.

Actually, a quickened scroll of magic missile would be a -whatever- action where -whatever- is the time to cast the spell, ala Skip Williams. This is stated multiple times in the article he did on magic items. He also states that this does not affect Oils and Potions, they ALWAYS take a standard action, unlike EVERY OTHER magic item, which can vary in activation time; Psionic items are in a bit of a gray area, because Skip didn't say anything definitive about them, but it's easy to assume the same rules apply. And if they do, the question is wether the exception about Oils and Potions would extended to tattoos, since they are 'psionic potions'. There has yet to be a ruling on this that I know of; It was brought up several weeks ago on one of my characters, but I never got a concrete response from anyone.

Actually, a quickened scroll of magic missile would be a -whatever- action where -whatever- is the time to cast the spell, ala Skip Williams. This is stated multiple times in the article he did on magic items.

Except that in the FAQ, just above the quote I pulled for my note above, this question is answered:

Activating any magic item is a standard action, unless the item duplicates a spell effect that has a longer casting time or unless the item description specifies a different casting time. The sections on spell completion and spell trigger items should include the caveat that activating the item takes as long as casting the stored spell would take. Thus, it takes 1 hour to activate a scroll with an identify spell on it. A scroll or a wand with any of the summon monster spells in it takes a full round to activate, just as casting a summon monster spell does. (emphasis mine)

The problem is that scrolls, becuase they duplicate spells, don't have an item description. My feeling is that, if a Quickened scroll did have an item description, the description would indicate that casting the spell scribed on the scroll is a swift action. But because there is no 'official' item description for Quickened (or any other) scrolls, it's up to the DM to determine if that exception applies. My own feeling is that there are enough limitations involved in using scrolls (it's a minimum of a move action to ready a scroll for use, only one such spell can be cast per round, and if you have more than one Quickened spell on your scroll while your opponent can see you, it's trivial for him to destroy it on his turn) that allowing Quickened scrolls wouldn't be game-breaking. However, the Elders have already discussed and ruled on this issue, and while I disagree with the ruling, I'm willing to abide by the rule for the sake of play balance. (Putting Quickened spells in wands is laregly an irrelevent point, since only 0-level spells can be Quickened and still be low enough in 'effective level' to 'fit' into a wand.)

The Elders, to the best of my knowledge, have not yet ruled on Still, Silent, and other metamagic feats on scrolls. I'm particularly interested in a Still Spell ruling, since it makes a difference on how I'll equip (and eventually advance) my gladiator. I'm assuming there's no controversy on how the Empower Spell, Maximize Spell, Heighten Spell, Enlarge Spell, Extend Spell, and Widen Spell feats apply to scrolls, so specific rulings on those feats is not particularly urgent.

You're exactly right, Gonbow, when you point out the relative ambiguity between magical and psionic items makes for some degree of confusion. This is part of why I don't run psionic characters, and why, when I was doing pitlord-like stuff long ago on the CO boards, I didn't run fights that involved psionic characters.

Except that in the FAQ, just above the quote I pulled for my note above, this question is answered:

Why would there need to be a ruling on still-silent scrolls? They are applied as needed. Any component satisfied by a metamagic feat does not need to be satisfied again by activating the scroll.

A silent-spell on a a scroll, requires gesticulation only. Apply both still-silent and you need to just look at it to activate it. It's still a concious effort and requires a standard action.

We ruled quickened-scrolls take standard actions? I must have missed that argument.

I don't mind if it takes a while. I've PM'd TheMagister, Waywreth and Pitlords on this to indicate that I don't care if it takes til Friday. I'm editing my character as if I'd lost, which still brings me to ECL5, and I'll edit him up if he ends up winning.

I have a real problem with "attacking the ground" so that you may use combat expertise and fighting defensively when you're not actually fighting.

I'm not going to allow you to do it in this fight unless you get Elder approval, or can show me where they've approved it in the past (I'd really lose some respect for them if they did...it's just ludicrous).

As far as the rest of it, I'm workin on it today and tomorrow (it's day shift for me now, so I'm on-again-off-again as far as posting is concerned).

The problem is that for a moderately high leveled character, the bonus that they get from combat expertise can be even higher than that of going on the total defensive, even without the loophole that it is combinable with defensive fighting. A character who is just completely protecting himself from harm should be harder to hit than one who is just mostly guarding himself and still fighting. For anyone without 5 ranks in tumble, they will have a Expertise bonus higher than total defense when their BAB reaches +5, which is 5th level for fighter types. When combined with Defensive Fighting, they can actually reach this at third level. And as I said, you shouldn't be safer when you are attacking then when you are not.

Well from the srd

It seems to me that you can only use it when engaged in melee, I think hiting the floor hardly counts.

As for fighting defensively it has no such implcations but i think its better to go full defense than fight defensively.

Combat Expertise [General]
Prerequisite

Int 13.
Benefit

When you use the attack action or the full attack action in melee, you can take a penalty of as much as -5 on your attack roll and add the same number (+5 or less) as a dodge bonus to your Armor Class. This number may not exceed your base attack bonus. The changes to attack rolls and Armor Class last until your next action.
Normal

A character without the Combat Expertise feat can fight defensively while using the attack or full attack action to take a -4 penalty on attack rolls and gain a +2 dodge bonus to Armor Class.
Special

A fighter may select Combat Expertise as one of his fighter bonus feats.

Mrs. Buttmunch vs. Amion Dar'ath: revised (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7474857&postcount=487) is up.

Peruse for your rules-lawyering pleasure so that I may be done with it.

I DEMAND AN ENTIRE REDO OF THE FIGHT! IT'S TOTALLY WRONG!

... just kidding. Will update sheet with loss, and retire cleric since I blew his feats on worthless things.

Fighting defensively as a standard action: You can choose to fight defensively while attacking. If you do so, you take a -4 penalty on all attacks in a round to gain a +2 dodge bonus to AC for the same round. This bonus stacks with the AC bonus granted by the Combat Expertise feat (page 92).
So they do stack.

And as I said before, it should always be safer to just all out protect yourself than to try to protect yourself and hit something.

@Snommelp - Got tactics for Grik

@Ribking - Please send me tactics for Greefe! I will be running the fight on Sunday with or without tactics.

I got no problem with them stacking. I have a problem with their use while the user is NOT in melee.

Training (represented here by the Combat Expertise feat) should always be more efficient than what Joe Everyman is capable of.
