This thread is for questions, comments, and concerns solely regarding the pairings, quests, and campaigns for this week.
When you comment you should be nice. When you concern, be nice. When you rant, do not post in size 7, because it is annoying. I am pretty sure all of us can read normal size print, and even smaller perhaps, just fine. Have a nice day.

@Pitlord: Please don't forget to set Willbrock (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5203491) to ECL-8-league. He is ready! ;)

-20° for the character, and -10° for the Custom Item. Please post the latter in the Blackmarket. You have to link my reply there then.

Oh no, I forgot to change Willbrock's (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5203491&postcount=165) skills, but now it's too late for editing. Pairings haven't been made, so I post it here and inform my oponent and pitlord later.

Fight concern:

I just edited my char Davian to correct some simple recording problems, the fight pairings havn't been posted yet, but it says my post was made at 9:45pm(I live in a revolving time zone(no daylight savings), I must have miscalculated where I am right now)

I don't know whether my char is illegal for this week now or not.

EDIT- I guess I don't mind taking an automatic loss as per the FAQ(free xp/gold for me), but I think that's kind of a dumb way for my char to advance. I'd rather fight or just not fight and get nothing.((free xp/gold doesn't give me a sense of accomplishment))

I think it might be a good thing to remind you of the procedure:
- Send tactics early to your pitlord
- Pitlords may begin to run fights without tactics from saturday on
- ...and earlier with tactics
- Fights must be up till tuesday 8 AM GMT. That's when the sun goes up in Europe!
- Late penalties after that

We had two cool stories this week: Huan's St.Aerien's belated Sermon of an exciting fight featuring Asmeroviel, and Luni's story of the greedy slaad who didn't want to spend any ressources but ended up with a net loss of 3000 gp :/ Both stories are worth a credit.

As you can see we have no monster fights anymore and thus there are several PCs sitting out because of uneven leagues. I could put rematches in team fights but that won't always work so we might have even more guys sitting out. There are two solutions:
- we need a dungeon map for monster fights
- we need a way to calculate rewards for all vs all fights
I would like to have your input in there. The sooner we solve this, the sooner we have these fight types. Propose your ideas in the House of Commons (or the Council if you're an Elder).

Then, we have to improve our coordination a bit, especially about Quests. I need to be informed about them; at least tell me the EL, the starting date, the quest aim, and who's questing.

Ok, that's it for now
Cat

@McJarivs: It's ok. Don't worry.

Ummm ... it was my understanding that if my 3rd character crafts under 1000gp that he is considered inactive and does not count toward the 2 char limit. I was trying to acrue some credits to use on things like quests and campaigns.

If this is incorrect I would be interested in not crafting and just moving my 3rd guy to total inactive for the week. I had Jindl confirm this path of thought in the tavern hall.

Another free fight Jindl? Well, Pittbull's decision. Indri has just finished his Quest so I couldn't set him ready. With some hours more time I would be able to do it but since you insist that Anna comes first...well, I can just aswell sit out a week.

Actually, I thought that Anna should have been included in the pairing rolls for ECL8, since that is what she was set ready for. There shouldn't have been a "doesn't fight" roll at that ECL, since there are 4 combatants (Anna, JotHF, Uhme, and Willbrock).

You disabled monster fights, but not the ability for gladiators to face opponents of a different level.

And if you're worried about it being a "free fight", then why not just pair Uhme against Anna?
Caterane

07-13-05, 07:15 PM
Different league fights are still allowed but those must be okayed by the lower gladiator else I could pair you up against the Harvester. If Pittbull wants to fight Anna, I will set you two up. However, I am afraid we don't have a pitlord left for that fight.

Uhme vs Anna... patience ;) you'll meet him soon enough

I understand. I didn't think I was unclear in my PM that they were all my characters. I would've appreciated some warning when you figured it out and dissallowed me vs. everyone else, because I wouldn't have been running so many gladiators then. Oh, well.

- we need a way to calculate rewards for all vs all fights
What you could do is give each gladiator gold/xp according to each win/loss they recieve, and give the final victor a bonus, say, +25%. So if there's 4 gladiators, a winner of 3 battles gets the gold/xp of 3 wins, +25%; the winner of 2 battles and loser of 1 gets gold/xp of 2 wins and a loss; the winner of 1 battle and loser of 2 gets gold/xp for 1 win and 2 losses; and the loser of all three battles gets gold/xp for three losses. If there's three gladiators, then just subtract the gold from the third fight. In case of a three-way tie (all records are 1w, 1l), there would be no reward bonus.

What do you guys think?
Caterane

07-13-05, 08:19 PM
@DA: An All vs All fight is like a Team fight without teams. See FAQ for more information.
Deadly Assassin

07-13-05, 08:25 PM
I did. I guess what I meant by "fight" is each gladioator another defeated/lost to. But now that I look at my proposal again, it wouldn't work like I was thinking.

One question:
Can a character with Use Magical Device use psionic items like powerstones?
And can a character with Use Psionic Device use scrolls?

If yes, then why are there two seperate skills.
If no, then why does Barak Brigandslayer have powerstones but uses UMD and why does Willbrook have scrolls and uses UPD?

Confused.

Arg. I accidently set Asmeroviel as 'ready'. I previously had him as not ready and only training, I even asked in the Tavern if a character was 'inactive' if they could train two tricks to the same or different animals or what else could be done, all before leveling him up last night. Then, after leveling I changed the title by accident, it was suppoesed to be ready to train. I also didn't want to ready him as I need to accumulate some credits...

If xanadu wants, I would bow out of the fight and The Ripper could take Asmeroviel's place.

Edit:

Problem with that is The Ripper is Xanadu's gladiator and Xanadu then can't pitlord this fight. Brilf vs an ECL 5 *and* an ECL 6 gladiator is just a bit much...

Would Guts(5) & Brilf(5) vs Zaiyad(6) & Felice(4) be a more fair fight if Asmeroviel drops out? Or can someother pitlord swap with Xanadu to allow The Ripper into the Asmeroviel's spot?

I'm becoming really sick of certain characters ALWAYS getting paired for team fights. Whenever I activate Sasha Calanis she has ALWAYS initially been in a team fight, though the first fight was eventually made into two separate 1 on 1 fights. I know there's nothing to be done about it, but I'm just saying... it just doesn't seem fair. Oh well.

Well, as per Dunewalkers' character listing....

Dunewalker - Ready (To Craft!) for July 13, 2005 - The Mad Crafter!

Things To Craft:
All week - Market Value: 6,910gp aka 3,455gp to craft.
Mithril Breastplate +5 AC, +5 Max Dex, -1 ACP, (15 Lbs.) 2,100gp
Heavy Mithril, Spiked Shield (Large) +2 AC, 0 ACP, (15 + 5 Lbs.) 1030gp
[Ma]Longsword (Large) 165gp
[Ma]Shortsword (Large) 160gp

However, in the Battles of Gladius thread, all it says is:

Dunewalker (LLMadCow) crafts mithral breastplate and shield

Well, what I want to know is this: Can I go ahead and update the sheet and everything will be fine, or does a change need to be made to the Battles of Gladius thread to acknowledge the Longsword and Shortsword as well?

Darn right it will B-)

When I specifically asked a while back I was told there was complete transparancy regarding psionics and magic...I would expect this to extend to UMD/UPD.(as the word complete is a strong word, and transparancy definately works on PR and SR, it should work on UMD and UPD)
Salrantol

UMD & UPD are equivalent skills, both of which allow the activation of both magic and psionic devices. This has been a house rule for a while, that somehow missed the FAQ (*cough* Caterane *cough*).

Reasoning (in my mind):
This is, in part, because they suck enough as is, and you have to burn 2 feats, lots of points in CHA, and lots of skill points just to be reasonably consistent with them. DC 20+caster level for the use you'll do most--CASTER LEVEL. That means to activate a typical scroll or powerstone with a CL equal to your level, if you have max skill ranks, you still need a +17 from CHA and feats to activate it as though you were the appropriate class. So with a max CHA of 18 (+4), you need +13 from feats & synergy to activate perfectly. So with Magical Aptitude and Skill Focus (UMD), you need +8 synergy. But since you can only get +4 synergy (Decipher Script & Spellcraft), until you hit level 8 or get a racial +2cha with no LA, you'll need to roll a 4 just to cast spells at your level consistently from scrolls (until level 8, when you only need a 3 if you put both increases in CHA). That's a 15% failure chance, despite DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE. So I don't think that there's any reason to require somebody to dump their feats and skill points into two skills.

Note that that all is just for scrolls. The synergies specifically only work with scrolls, and there is only one such synergy for powerstones. Right now my char is running *optimal* with +19 scrolls/+17 powerstones.((I'm assuming transparancy doesn't go to the point where the synergies from spellcraft, decipher script, and psicraft all count towards scrolls/powerstones))

Oh, and since the ECL 4 league doesn't actually get to hate me, the reason was that I set all 4 of my ECL 4 gladiators as a 4-way team, but when I asked Caterane about it, he didn't realize they were all mine and approved it, then changed his mind when he found out it was 1 me vs. 4 others trying vainly to coordinate and cried "FOUL!" I thought 4 out of 5 getting a team battle and the 5th getting left out would be kind of cruel, which was why I thought you'd all hate me.

Milo Tad vs Doran Ixion is up. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6692137&postcount=109)

Hope I did everything right. Pretty close match. The margin between winning and losing was 1 point of subdual damage.

Edit: I'm going to re-run the fight from round 11, because I forgot Escape Artist is a standard action. Looks like it'll just save some arrows and a CLW, though.

Okay, done, I think. The coordinates probably get a little screwy at the end, but they don't matter enough for me to go through and change them.

Okay, done, I think. The coordinates probably get a little screwy at the end, but they don't matter enough for me to go through and change them.

Well, I'm looking at a few things and I have some questions:

Charge, and grapple (no AoO for not threatening)

So far as I know:

You provoke an attack of opportunity from the target you are trying to grapple. If the attack of opportunity deals damage, the grapple attempt fails. (Certain monsters do not provoke attacks of opportunity when they attempt to grapple, nor do characters with the Improved Grapple feat.)

I looked at Doran's sheet and did not see Improved Grapple, nor is he a monster.

Round 3 shows Protection from Arrows absorbing an additional amount of damage that is not accounted for in combat.

Round 9 - Dorans grapple check should have been d20 + 8, not d20 + 12. (The same goes for later rounds, until expansion wears off, at which point his grapple drops to d20 +3)

When Milo Tad makes his AoO in round 9, I am guessing that all he has in his hand is his bow and an arrow? If this is the case, Milo can use an arrow to make the AoO at d20 + [3bab +1(str) +1(size)] - 4 Improvised Weapon vs AC 11 (Doran's AC 15 is -2 for charging, -1 AC for Expansion, and his Dex dropped by 2 with expansion costing him 1 more AC!).

So all this means:

Round 9: Milo (d20 + 1) vs Doran (AC 11). If successful, the arrow deals 1d3 +1 damage and negates the grapple.

I think that covers it. This is accurate to the best of my knowledge.

Prepairing for Anna:

I know blindsight and blindsight doesn't work against incorporal creatures, but what's about touchsight?
It says:

You generate a subtle telekinetic field of mental contact, allowing you to “feel” your surroundings even in total darkness or when your sight would otherwise be obscured by your physical environment. Your touchsight field emanates from you out to 60 feet. You ignore invisibility, darkness, and concealment, though you must have line of effect to a creature or an object to discern it. You do not need to make Spot or Listen checks to notice creatures; you can detect and pinpoint all creatures within 60 feet. In many circumstances, comparing your regular senses to what you learn with touchsight is enough to tell you the difference between visible, invisible, hiding, and concealed creatures

Since it bases on mental contact and not on physical (like blindsight or tremorsense), It might be useful against incorporals.

Any ideas?

@Jh316

Milo uses a +8 attack while rapid shooting, meaning in round 13 one attack would miss, which doesn't actually help Doran. On the other hand, round 16 makes no sense to me. Doran has a +3 to hit with his hands to grapple, and since Milo has a 16 touch AC, it seems to me that both of his rolls of 13 would hit, giving him 2 grapple chances to win. But actually, that doesn't even matter, because in round 15 Doran took 21 total subdual damage from Milo, meaning he was knocked out.

Touchsight should work.

Okay, edited. He still wins, only he's now at 19 subdual.
King Uther

07-14-05, 09:32 AM
What I was saying earlier is:

Round 9: Grapples for 7 subdual
Round 10: 4 subdual
Round 11: 5 subdual
Round 12: 2 subdual (which isn't added)
Round 15: 3 subdual
Round 16: 3 subdual

That's 24 subdual damage, whereas Milo has an hp of 20.

Well jh316 I dont want to be an annoyance but I am wondering why in round 10 I did not try to disarm his bow? I knew the strongest ability of my opponent was his bow and did make mention of it in my tactics. I am not asking you to rerun the fight but I do think that it might be an important turn around.

PS I didn't know you could improvise threaten with and arrow. I always figured you drew it as you made your shot. (shrugs)

Quick edit: @Uther I think those damages are milo's AoO's disrupting my grapple.
@jh316: just read rules and I would have had to pin him to disarm him. even still
Jh316

07-14-05, 09:40 AM
I did mark AoO for one of the ones you're mentioning, but forgot to for one or two. Those are the attacks of opportunity Moli gets with his arrow. You'll see it uses Doran's AC of 15 instead of Moli's touch AC of 16.
Jh316

07-14-05, 09:42 AM
Because you can't pin and disarm in the same round with only one attack, and it lasts for one round. So Milo would've gotten un-pinned by the time it's your attack. Unless that means for both the current round and the next round, in which case I'll have you disarm him.
King Uther

07-14-05, 09:52 AM

For Luken vs Anna, Caterane informed me Touchsight does not work vs Incorporeal.

PS I didn't know you could improvise threaten with and arrow. I always figured you drew it as you made your shot. (shrugs)
Sure you can:

Arrows: An arrow used as a melee weapon is treated as a light improvised weapon (–4 penalty on attack rolls) and deals damage as a dagger of its size (critical multiplier x2). Arrows come in a leather quiver that holds 20 arrows. An arrow that hits its target is destroyed; one that misses has a 50% chance of being destroyed or lost.

-ToKI've rolled this one around in my head for a while ToK and I think the grapple rules make this impossible unless you have more than one attack a round. Grapple rules say:If your base attack bonus allows you multiple attacks, you can attempt one of these actions in place of each of your attacks, but at successively lower base attack bonuses.Pinning your opponent falls into this section, so with one attack a round all you could do is spend it on the Pin. Once you have them pinned you can do these actions:You can attempt to damage your opponent with an opposed grapple check, you can attempt to use your opponent’s weapon against him, or you can attempt to move the grapple (all described above). The section "all described above" means that you can do all of the listed actions in a pin with the same rules as described above...thus you would need multiple attacks to Pin AND deal damage.
Tellish_of_Ket

DMG:
You can have spikes added to your armor, which allow you to deal extra piercing damage on a successful grapple attack.

Pinning is still a grapple action, so by definition, pining them also means you deal 1d6 piercing damage. And spikes can be used as an off-hand weapon if you don't already have one.

-ToK
Gonbow

07-14-05, 10:32 AM
Armor Spikes... This one is debatable, because they have special rules compared to most weapons (like being able to TWF with them and a greatsword, as an example).

Armor Spikes: You can have spikes added to your armor, which allow you to deal extra piercing damage (see Table: Weapons) on a successful grapple attack. The spikes count as a martial weapon. If you are not proficient with them, you take a –4 penalty on grapple checks when you try to use them. You can also make a regular melee attack (or off-hand attack) with the spikes, and they count as a light weapon in this case. (You can’t also make an attack with armor spikes if you have already made an attack with another off-hand weapon, and vice versa.)

It all depends on how you interpret 'which allow you to deal extra piercing damage (see Table: Weapons) on a successful grapple attack.'

Interpretation 1: If I have armor spikes, whenever I win a grapple check, I deal piercing damage to my opponent.

RAW, this seems to be what is being suggested.

Interpretation 2: If I have armor spikes, whenver I attempt to deal damage to my opponent in a grapple and succeed, I do more damage.

This interpretation hings off of the fact that spikes specify 'extra' damage. It's not very extra if it is all the damage you are doing, eh?

As to which interpretation is used in Co Co... <looks to Elders>

p.s: Anyone know what the decision on blur was/if there was one?
Cerebus13

-ToKWell....Pinning is a grapple "action", but not technically a grapple "attack" is how I saw it being ruled. I've always interpreted Armor Spikes as being damage that can be stacked with damage done from the "Damage Your Opponent" grapple option. If I have been looking at this incorrectly this makes my grappler a whole lot more fun :P.

@Gonbow

I have always used Interpretation #2 when running my grappler. This is because I do not think the wording "extra damage on a grapple attack" equals any grapple action. I think it only applies to the action "Damage Your Opponent".
I may be incorrect in this however which changes a lot of how I should be playing :P.
King Uther

07-14-05, 10:48 AM
Armor spikes should deal extra damage while in a pin, but really that may not be the case in DnD, seeing as how it says extra damage, insinuating damage must be dealt first.

Purkake

07-14-05, 11:17 AM
I have always thought that you just to automatic damage in grapple. It seems logical, because when you are grappling and the spikes just pierce the victim, just like a crushing walls trap deals damage with no saves. There was a talk about this 2 weeks ago i think.

EDIT: okey problem probably solved: (FAQ)

When grappling, you can damage your foe with your spikes
by making a regular grapple check (opposed by your foe’s
check). If you succeed, you deal piercing damage to your foe
(see Table 7–5 in the Player’s Handbook) rather than the
unarmed strike damage you’d normally deal when damaging
your foe with a grapple check. Since you can use armor spikes
as a light weapon, you can simply use them to attack your foe.
You suffer a –4 penalty on your attack roll when attacking with
a light weapon in a grapple (see page 156 in the Player’s
Handbook), but if your foe is bigger or stronger than you, this
might prove a better tactic than trying to deal damage through a
grapple check because there is no opposed roll to make—you
just have to hit your opponent’s Armor Class. You can’t attack
with two weapons when grappling, even when one of those
weapons is armor spikes (see the section on grappling in
Chapter 8 of the Player’s Handbook).
You can’t attack and damage your foe if he has you pinned.
If you break the pin and avoid being pinned again, you can go
back to attacking your foe. If your attack bonus is high enough
to allow multiple attacks, you might break the pin and then use
your remaining attack to damage your foe. To accomplish this,
you must first use an attack to break the pin. You can break a
pin using the Escape Artist skill, but trying to do so is a
standard action for you; once you use the standard action to
attempt escape, you can’t make any more attacks during your
turn.

Don't get caught in the fluff. Touchsight grants blindsight. Blindsight doesn't work on incorporeals. Touchsight doesn't detect incorporeals.

You'll note that touchsight is not mind affecting either (which it would be if it were based upon mental contact). It is based upon a physical, telekenitic sense. In the case of incorporeals, there is nothing for you to "feel".

Ah, didn't realize he could make an AoO with an arrow.

As a follow up to this, when making any kind of attack, using an arrow as an improvised weapon, it always takes a -4 to the roll, as I mentioned earlier, but it is also treated as a dagger of the same size. That is where I got the 1d3 from. Oddly enough, using an arrow in this way would negate the protection from arrows, since PfA specifically says that it gives you a Damage Reduction 10/Ranged Weapons as opposed to DR10/Arrows. Using an arrow in this manner is obviously a melee attack.

I just realized that in the process of adding my character to my sig, I accidentally updated the errors that were listed to me in the character violation thread before my pitlord had posted our fight. I corrected them to put them in my sig, and completely spaced the fact that it would change my character before the fight had commenced. All that got changed was that I changed the incorrect skills (I had put in too many skill points for ranks) to the correct numbers. I hope this won't cause me to auto-fail my battle, but if it does, so be it...it's definitely a violation. But I wanted to be proactive and mention it. If I can get an Elder ruling on this, it would be appreciated, so that McJarvis doesn't have to run a fight for no reason if I end up taking the auto-loss.

I am not sure if I understand everything that happened, but let me answer it this way....

The way we typically handle the whole character updating issue is this:

1st: Did the Pitlord running the fight already snag a copy of your character? If the answer is yes, the fight can go on, since we can always just rely on what he has as an original, unmodified character.

2nd: If there is not an unmodified copy of your character sheet available as proof, it really falls back to the Pitlord and your opponent (or you if you choose to forfeit). The Pitlord could force the rule without consulting your opponent, though this comes off a bit mean and is not recommended. Your opponent should be given a chance to look over your character and decide for himself if he wants to continue with the fight as planned or not. If he so chooses, he can opt for the auto-win. Or he can say let the fight go on. Or perhaps some in between option.

If you did not level after the last fight, a reasonable option is: use the exact same character sheet from the previous fight, with the following changes assumed to have been made: XP and GP modified as needed, any equipment lost in battle was replaced.

I hope this helps.

About spider climb...you are each partly correct. Though you need two hands free to climb, as it specifically says, if you aren't moving, thus "not climbing", you can draw an item. However, the problem is, you need a free hand for spell completion as well where the scroll is concerned. So techinally he could fight from higher ground, he could cast memorized spells, use a wand etc...but not a scroll.

you'd be able to cast two first level spells off of this list and one second. I never knew you could simply waive the first level spells entirely in favor of a second level spell. I will continue running the fight with your original tactics.
I was under the assumption that you had 'X' spell levels to do with as you please. Just so long as you don't exceed your daily allotment of spells for any level, you can do what you want with the 1/3 spell levels that you have.

Spell levels available is the correct way to rule this. If you have 4 levels available you could do (4 1st) or (2 1st and 1 2nd) or (2 2nd) etc.
Tellish_of_Ket

@Iced: Zerone is correct. In your example that mage has 10 lvls of spells, and can cast a total of 4 spell levels worth of spells. He can cast two 2nd's, a second, and 2 1st's, or 4 1st's. Cantrips are excluded and he can cast as many as he wishes. If, during the encounter, he casts 3 1st's, he only has one spell level left, and thus is stuck casting only a lvl 1 spell.

Wow...what an exciting fight.

Silent as a ... well, as a ghost, Anna glides foward, slipping partway into the earth. As she moves, she notices her duergar opponent in the western area, and knowing his penchant for becoming invisible, she draws a wand to give her the ability to see the unseen. As she draws near, the realizes that his reflexes leave much to be desired. Summoning her own telekinetic abilities, she flings her 15 large swords at the grey dwarf.

Anna begins at the front middle of her box (0, 22), and moves forward to (-1, 16) and into cover from the ground. While moving, she draws her wand: see invisibility. At the end of her move, she activates TK to throw swords at Willbrock. Attacks: 15d20 +11 vs FFAC17 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=117851), 11 hits. Damage = 11x3d8 = 162 pts (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=117852). Willbrock is dead. TK reusable in 1d4 = 4 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=117855) rounds.) If I did something wrong (which is entirely possible), please let me know in the FotW thread.

Anna (-1, 16, cover), 25/25 hp, TK reusable [4]

Ok I'm in the middle of the revision of the Kon vs Shan fight and coming to the conculsion that things might turn out differently since Kon cant stay on the walls and use his scrolls, so this will take me a bit longer to do.

Question: in this situation where rules were misinterpreted is it allowable to allow a gladiator to resubmit tactics regarding the specific problem or do I have to make do with what I have?

Unfortunately, Son of Kon has already read BBQ-boy's tactics. It's a tough decision that is yours and the affected gladiator to make.

If it were me, i'd improvise with what i had, because re-submitting tactics after seeing it happen wouldn't be fair. You could still have Son of Kon climb the pillar, then realize he can't use the scroll (lapse of reason or whatever), then go from there. Or before he climbs, he knows he can't accomplish what he wants to do and changes his mind. It's up to you.

My basic tactics will remain the same if you sub a spiderclimb scroll for a levitate scroll. They are the same level scroll and everything. It's just such a perfect thing to do...

At least, if I had known the Spiderclimb thing wouldn't work I would have bought a Levitate scroll instead. I know it's not in my inventory per-se, but what I thought I was buying was "second level scroll that will allow me to get up high where I can't be grappled while still casting spells, even if at a disadvantage of being out in the open". I can even "clamber along the wall" of the pillar if I levitate next to it. I bought spiderclimb because I liked the flavor of it better.(under the assumption that it worked the way I thought..)

@McJarvis:
Damage: 6+2+2=10x3(critical hit)-2(damage reduction)=28 dmg.(-6/22 hp)

Multiplying Damage: Sometimes you multiply damage by some factor, such as on a critical hit. Roll the damage (with all modifiers) multiple times and total the results. Note: When you multiply damage more than once, each multiplier works off the original, unmultiplied damage.

Just so you're aware. Will probably lower the damage slightly, but probably not enough to stop the victim from dying.
Prince FyreDragon

07-16-05, 04:24 AM
@McJarvis: Go ahead and roll the damage the way it should have been done and post the results. It probably won't affect the outcome, but there is a chance it could, and if so, then Maylee definitely deserves that chance.

{[1d8+4] + [1d8+4] + [1d8+4]} - 2 = dmg dealt.

median rolls = 25.5 - 2 = 23.5dmg
avg rolls = 24 - 2 = 22dmg

I would say your chances are about 50/50.

Since one roll was already done, the formula would be (6 + 2 + 2) + (x + 2 + 2) + (y + 2 + 2), where x + y cannot be greater than 4 for the result to change, as less than 4 would still be alive, and 4 or greater would still allow for the CDG to happen. Exactly a total of 4 between the remaining two rolls would result in 0/22 HP, and anything greater than 4 would bring about Con checks to stabilize, just like was already done. So snake eyes or a 2 and a 1 are what Maylee would need to have the fight keep going.

I'll go check the SRD.Determine Effect: A spell successfully activated from a scroll works exactly like a spell prepared and cast the normal way.Am I misinterpreting this?
Also, how many spells can I have on one scroll? I get the impression it is 6, but it is not specificly stated.

the minimum concentation to take 20 and thus become psionically focused is 1.

A Major scroll can hold up to 6 spells.

A DC for a scroll is the minimum Int bonus needed for a spell of that level, regardless of who casts it...

lvl 1 (12 INT) = DC 11
lvl 2 (14 INT) = DC 12
lvl 3 (16 INT) = DC 13
Etc...

*•. Z
Sindorin

07-16-05, 10:19 AM
That is *slightly* incorrect. The minimum int required for a wizard 1st spell would be 11, thus the DC would be 11. Level two would be 12 int, thus the dc would be 13 (10+2level+1int), and so on...

I have a few questions concerning the Czernobog vs Xaseus Soulrendir fight. It won't change anything, but I want to understand some things.

1. The Caster Level check for the CL5 Shocking Grasp, isn't Czernobog a 3rd level caster, so shouldn't it be 12 + 3 =15 vs DC 6 in stead of 12 + 1 =13 vs DC 6?

2. I already answered this myself.

I'm not sure if I explained myself clearly by your answer. Question #1 is about Caster Level, not Save DCs of scrolls.

A Cleric 2, Wizard 1 is a 3rd level caster, correct? So my example is thus;
The pitlord wrote: 12(roll) + 1(CL) =13 vs Caster Level Check DC 6

I was saying that it should have been: 12(roll) + 3(CL) =15 vs Caster Level Check DC 6.

:)Oh duh, I didn't read that correctly. Depending on what spell you cast, Divine or Arcane, you would either at 2 or 1 to the roll respectively. Shocking Grasp is an Arcane only spell, so your CL check would have been +1 because Cleric CL does not add to your Wizard CL when casting an Arcane scroll.

Yes, you are only a 1st level wizard, although you are a 3rd level character. Since you didn't take the magic domain as a cleric, you only get to use arcane scrolls as a first level wizard, meaning you only add 1 to activate scrolls. It's also a good thing you passed the check since 3d6 of backlash damage would have messed up your day, not to mention the fact that you would have to CdG with your crossbow, which would have been a lot less likely to succeed in killing your foe.

The save DC for shocking grasp, had it allowed one (it doesn't), would have been 10 + 1 *1.5 = 11.5 (round down to 11). A second level scroll (perhaps shatter) would have a save DC of 13. I believe these are not affected by any feats or other abilities that you might have, such as spell focus (enchantment) for a scroll of sleep.

Spells that you cast on your own, however, such as the doom or sleep spells that you cast during the battle, have a DC of 10 + spell level + Int or Wis modifier (depending on if it's a wizard spell or cleric spell) + spell focus or whatnot. I'll also point out that if you didn't have spell focus, sleep would not have worked on Xaseus, and if Xaseus was a straight paladin, Doom couldn't possibly work because of his aura of courage.

@Jindl: Arena fights are in some way simulations of campaigns. Anna uses her TK ability constantly, and she uses the "sustained force" version. Now suddenly a fight breaks out and you would have to wait 1d4 rounds to use your TK again. Infact, it is a completely different application of the power.

If you had some time before the battle starts, you could just aswell hide, or go to total defense before the fight starts. There is no preparation time in arena fights. That means, you have been using TK "Sustained Force" for the last 16 hours until the ringing of the starting signal.

You also have to be able to bring your things into the arena. Bruno had his giant for that. You used a gorgon in the past.

And I say thats a load of crap. Arena fights are arena fights. Anna isn't on a quest or campaign, she is fighting in an arena.

Furthermore, if that was gonna be the rule, show me where it is written? Are you assuming both combatants reach their positions at the exact same time? Anna could have been waiting there for more than a minute or two before Willbrock showed up. Your assumption is full of holes, and most importantly, its not in the rules anywhere.

Why don't you make up some more rules to penalize my character in the middle of the fight?
Caterane

Furthermore, if that was gonna be the rule, show me where it is written?
It is a logical application of the rules. Of course, there's not a seperate chapter for every ability. Wasn't even I who pointed out; there was a discussion about that some weeks ago in the Elder Discussion Forum.

Are you assuming both combatants reach their positions at the exact same time? Anna could have been waiting there for more than a minute or two before Willbrock showed up.
That is something that's not in the rules; could as well be the other way around that Anna arrives late. And yes, they arrive at the same time, or are teleported in, or whatever. Else, you could use the free minute to hide, or do other things.

What we know is that
- everything you bring in must be carried by either you or your allies. [TK to carry 300 lbs]
- you can use at will abilities to prebuff [TK to bring in the swords]
- prebuffs must begin at least 16 hours before the match, and last until the match begins. [TK used from t-16h to t-0 ...Round 0. Now roll for Round 1 when you can use it again]

Anyway, we leave it out for this fight, and discuss it afterwards. As I said, it's in the Elders Forum.

PS: Just want to make one thing clear: I am neutral on that Jindl, but LLMadCow's suggestion uses a logical basis. I just wish you would have participated in the discussion back then. We'll talk about it after the fight, and you will have a chance to convince the others. If the majority of the Elders agree with your point, then you can use TK from the beginning on.

I would take it, except for the fact that Kaigan's already called dibs, and that I probably shouldn't pitlord my own fight: that might be a serious handicap on my part that gives Davian the advantage he needs to beat me. I haven't actually examined the Anna fight as I have been away, but I am curious about one thing. Are we enforcing the LOS for ranged weapons? What I mean is, is Willbrock in direct LOE of the swords, or does he have cover? A Violent Thrust by definition would be a straight line.
LLMadCow

07-18-05, 01:34 AM
And I say thats a load of crap. Arena fights are arena fights. Anna isn't on a quest or campaign, she is fighting in an arena.

Furthermore, if that was gonna be the rule, show me where it is written? Are you assuming both combatants reach their positions at the exact same time? Anna could have been waiting there for more than a minute or two before Willbrock showed up. Your assumption is full of holes, and most importantly, its not in the rules anywhere.

Why don't you make up some more rules to penalize my character in the middle of the fight?

Arena Combat II
You may enter the arena with effects running that have a duration of 16 hours or more, which we call Pre-Buffs.

AND

"At will" abilities or renewable effects (like a Ring of Invisibility) can be pre-buffed with.

So, you can enter with TK up, but since it has an occassional downtime, you have to accept a formula to determine what round in your 'cycle' you are at:

1st - Roll 1d4 (X) to determine how many rounds Anna will be unable to use her TK.
2nd - Add: (12 + X) = Y = (The total number of rounds she can successfully use TK).
3rd - Take the result from the second step, pick high or low (for what rounds are down time), roll as 1dY and find results.

AKA

1d4 = X
(X + 12) = Y
Pick High or Low; (X+12 or 12+X)
Plot 1dY along the line of (X+12 or 12+X)

As long as the plot position of 1dY does not fall into the range of X, then Anna can begin combat with TK active.

Does this all make sense? Anna's TK is not a guaranteed Pre-buff. In all honesty she should begin the fight without it being active and just start using it at round 1. That would eliminate all confusion.

Also, in regard to how TK Works.....

Telekinesis
Transmutation
Level: Sor/Wiz 5
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Target or Targets: See text
Duration: Concentration (up to 1 round/ level) or instantaneous; see text Saving Throw: Will negates (object) or None; see text
Spell Resistance: Yes (object); see text

You move objects or creatures by concentrating on them. Depending on the version selected, the spell can provide a gentle, sustained force, perform a variety of combat maneuvers, or exert a single short, violent thrust.

Sustained Force: This version of the spell can last 1 round per caster level, but it ends if you cease concentration.

Combat Maneuver: This version of the spell can last 1 round per caster level, but it ends if you cease concentration.

Violent Thrust: Alternatively, the spell energy can be spent in a single round.

The big issue here is that it is 3 different forms of the ability, and you must have that 1d4 round break in between each different use of the spell. So, if Anna wanted to manuver the swords into position to attack with them, she'd have to move them with the spell, wait 1d4 rounds, then attack if her opponent is near by.

Lastly, I have a question that I forgot to ask when you went on your quest, but it is something that needs to be documented for future players who might wish to play Ghosts. According to the SRD:

Special Attacks: A ghost retains all the special attacks of the base creature, although those relying on physical contact do not affect nonethereal creatures. The ghost also gains a manifestation ability plus one to three other special attacks as described below.

Corrupting Gaze (Su), Corrupting Touch (Su), Draining Touch (Su), Frightful Moan (Su), Horrific Appearance (Su), Malevolence (Su), Manifestation (Su) and Telekinesis (Su)

I read the ENTIRE QUEST and could not find anything regarding these questions....

1st - Was a 1d3 rolled to determine how many special attacks Anna received, or did she automatically receive the Maximum of 3?
2nd - After determing that Anna was going to have the maximum of 3 additional special attacks, were the special attacks randomly rolled as 3d7, re-rolling duplicates or did you get to specify the special attacks?

I know that there are a handful of creatures in the SRD that are described as having [X amount additional features] that are either rolled for, or chosen by the DM in most instances. I am tyring to get a feeling for how we are handling this. The LA of the Template is supposed to take this into account, but obviously if 4 PCs fought 4 ghosts who all had the maximum amount of special attacks, don't you think they would be considered more powerful than 4 ghosts who all had the minimum amount of special attacks? You do the math!

As Questlord of that Quest, I can tell you that the abilities were not rolled for amount or random selection. Jindl had a ready sheet for the lvl 8 Anna prior. (Its my fault for overlooking the part where they get a random number of special attacks, and not questioning it... sorry)

Considering the 26 credits that a player has to spend and the quest taking a minimum of 3 weeks to gain the template, I do think rolling for random abilities is unfair. Nobody wants to spend that kind of work, then end up with a character they don't want to play.

@Huan - No reason to apologize. No one is saying you did anything wrong.

The purpose behind these questions is to maintain balance and equality in the COreColiseum/Living Gladius. It is imperative that all future Ghosts in the arena have the EXACT same options as Jindl and that no one have any questions. I would feel horrible if, for example: Iced came along, paid the credits for his character to become a ghost, a Pitlord rolled a d3 and announced that he was only allowed to have 1 additional power, then rolled a d7 and told him what that power was going to be - all this and Jindl just picked his powers from the maximum possible? This would not be fair at all.

Above and beyond trying to maintain fairness between all the ghosts who might exist in the arena, we also need to look at the fairness for the rest of the creatures in the SRD/MM who have variables in their creation. The only other one that comes to mind right now is the Yuan-Ti Half-Blood (MM exclusive, not found in the SRD). Chimera - 1d10 to determine the breath weapons for it's dragon head (Cohort). If I ever win the CoCo clearinghouse and get 1,000 credits, I am going to play a Djinni, specifically a Noble Djinni - normally a 1% chance. The list goes on.

So, equality and balance for all!

Fair enough, I have no problems with this in any way shape or form. Could you glance at the top half of the post and give that some thought? I brought this up in the past, and you never responded to it then. So, I am trying to address it again here. Anna can either start the fight with a 1D(1d4 +12) possibility that she will have her TK ability available right away and a limited amount of time before it resets, or she can start with the swords on the ground and the start using it.

I recommend starting with TK off.

Well, I have to side with Jindl here. It's really frustrating to pay so many credits and come out with horrific appearance as your only ability, and although he might not rely on his DM allowing max powers selected by him, we have to provide a balanced template for everyone, not determined by the luck of the die (that's why we don't roll hp either).

The thing about the TK at the beginning of combat needs to be discussed though, after the fight.

That the swords need a LOE goes without saying. You expand the TK energy to thrust them forward (as a ranged attack), not steer them zigzag through the obstacles. That'd be sustained force.
Jindl

07-18-05, 11:27 AM
My math was: 20 template +6 mandatory quest = 26 credits.

I'm not argueing the LOE needed between swords and target. I think it can be reasonably inferred from the general rules, even though normally LOE must only exist between caster and target.

Regarding TK, I just think it is an artificial assumption to think that combat must begin immediately and that both characters reach their starting positions at the same time. To me, its much more reasonable to say that the gladiators have been waiting in their starting boxes for a minute or two, but that they are not allowed to buff during that time, or risk forfeiting the match (and a very painful execution).

Let me first preface this by saying that I have a very limited understanding of the whole TK ability, having not read it myself.

That being said, it would seem to me, Jindl, that what you just said about the combatants being in the arena for a couple of minutes, but not being allowed to buff, would indicate that either you came in to the arena with the TK ability already running (and would thus need to submit to the 1d4 suggestion that has already been put forth), or would not be able to have it running, and would need to start it as soon as round 1 begins. Just my 2 coppers....your mileage may vary.

Another thing I see as a problem is the bucket of swords itself. The violent thrust ability of TK is not as controlled as the sustained force version. With the one single attack roll to make all 20(?) swords hit dosn't seem right to me. In other d20 systems, like BESM, this type of thing is treated as an area attack with a reflex save. What are the odds that an uncontrolled violent thrust will toss 20 swords 100 ft. into a 3x5 creature? A ruling like this could seriously cut the damage, and thus the first round kills.

Anna's use of sustained force to move the swords into position ends once they are in position. What Cat and LL suggest is that the fight must then begin that very second, which is why they think Anna has to wait through the first 1d4 rounds of combat to use the ability again. I think that is pretty unreasonable. Nothing suggests that the fight begins as soon as both gladiators are at the starting position. Nothing implies that they even reach their individual starting positions at the same time (meaning one gladiator may be waiting in their box for a minute or two before the other gladiator is in position and the fight starts). Also, Anna could move the swords into position several rounds before she moves into her starting position (several rounds meaning that her TK sustained force has been over long enough for her TK to refresh before the fight begins). All in all, its much more realistic to say that her TK is fully available at the start of the fight.

While you may not agree with the feasibility of the spell, I am following the rules of the TK violent thrust. It was made to throw 1 item per caster level, within a wieght limit, at a target a long way away. That's what the spell does.

Comments on Guts & Zhaiyad vs. Brilf & Ripper:

Init order was Zhaiyad,Ripper,Guts,Brilf:

So round 1 should have gone -- Zhaiyad cast fly+move up, Ripper moves and readies to cast on an opponent on hearing him. -- He wanted to entangle someone -- it turns out to be Guts who he actually ideally wanted to entangle. Then, Guts needs to make a reflex save to avoid entangle then an ASF check and a concentration check in order to get his spell off.
Brilf buffs. ... (this can have a pivitol difference especially if Guts fails any of these rolls) ASF check needs to happen in any case.

Guts gets a reflex save vs call lightning in round 3.

Brilf has psionic weapon which should go off with his kama attack in round 10 for +2d6 +1d6 for kama for total of 7d6+3 to Guts not 4d6+3. No stunning fist on that attack though.

Increasing Con increases hitpoints for Brilf. Doesn't matter in this case because of the dispel. Brilfs wisdom buff increases his touch AC by 2 which only goes away when Brilf is held or immobilized grappling is neither of those things. So Brilf's AC should be 15 even in a grapple (+5 from wis) which makes a difference in round 11. Brilf may get hostile empathic transfer off. Also, when ranged attacking into a grapple situation you need to randomly roll to see who you hit. Might be bad if scorching ray hits Guts...

From SRD in Table Armor Class modifiers:

Footnote 3
Roll randomly to see which grappling combatant you strike. That defender loses any Dexterity bonus to AC.

Brilf should be doing force screen in round 5. It might survive the dispel.

Kudos to Zhaiyad for the disrupt w/ magic missles tactic -- very effective. I think Ripper will get a brooch of shielding ASAP. :)

I know where you're coming from. I agree that it sounds weird to assume both gladiators enter at the same time and begin right away in a real gladiatorial match. You would have some time before it begins.

On the other hand one can say that if you were in a campaign Anna constantly uses her TK ability to move her swords. If suddenly a combat breaks out, she would have to wait until she can use her tk again.

The reason why you can use 16h prebuffs and at will prebuffs is that you will also have these available in a campaign. Basically, Anna would have to prebuff with sustained force to enter with the swords, and cease concentration on round 1, just like someone would have to voluntarily dismiss a prebuffed spell on round 1.

It's a tricky thing and that's why I would like to hear the opinion of the other Elders on that. Perhaps even a vote if it's not clear right away.

There was a point in time when I thought the arena matches of the CoCo should try to best reflect an actual campaign setting. I've argued long and hard for that, as you well know.

But LivingGladius changes that. We now have quests and campaigns for characters to embark upon, and these vehicles for adventure and build testing MUCH more accurately reflect a real campaign, especially considering that many are multiplayer fights, against monsters, not other PC's, in varying environments, etc.

Considering that quests and campaigns are the vehicles for testing how a build would really work in a RL game, I think arena fights should be viewed as what they really are. A test of tactics and builds for a 1on1, PvP battle. And that's something that is rare to never in a RL campaign. Guidelines for arena fights should reflect this truth, and not be artificial conspired to represent a real campaign. If I want to test my characters effectiveness in that, then I'll send her on a quest or campaign (and likely use her other abilities, like malevolence for example, much more frequently).

Sure, and without quests or campaigns it would be out of question for Anna to wait. That's where LLMadCow comes from. Now quests and campaigns have taken over. But still, the arena needs to preserve a basic outline of convertation to a campaign.

It's a new situation that needs to be assessed. And along that line we should come up with some concreter guidelines for the arena.

Anna's use of sustained force to move the swords into position ends once they are in position. What Cat and LL suggest is that the fight must then begin that very second, which is why they think Anna has to wait through the first 1d4 rounds of combat to use the ability again.

Do you actually read what I post? :banghead: Honestly? The whole post? (Sans the vast amounts of quoted SRD!) If you did you would know that all of what you just accused me of is TOTALLY inaccurate. For starters, I NEVER said that she had to sit through the first 1d4 rounds of combat waiting for her TK ability to be available. What I did say was that if for some reason you wished to have the TK power active when the fight started, regardless of init, that there was a simple formula that I devised that should be rolled and implimented. I also said that it would be a whole lot easier if Anna just started the fight with the swords on the ground and then activated her TK. If you go back and read you will discover that. If you want, I can go pull the posts for you.....

I think it is pretty unreasonable to go around misrepresenting people and ignoring the discussions that directly pertain to your character and then turn around and declare that your desired solution is EXACTLY WHAT I RECOMMENDED TWICE ALREADY! Yeah! See that part of your quote in red? Yep. That's me. That's what I said you should do a long time ago. It would have ended this debate if you had responded back then and said - 'That's a great idea! I love it. Anna will begin every fight with TK inactive and activate it in Round 1, after her initiative.'

Wondering about when I said that Anna should start the fight without TK Active? Well, for starters, earlier this week.

In all honesty she should begin the fight without it being active and just start using it at round 1. That would eliminate all confusion.

And when I say 'for starters' what I really mean is 'for cut-and-pasting it from my original post some time back in the Council of Elders discussion forum'. Feel free to go check it out. It's a good read with some GREAT IDEAS!

Also, in the rolls it appears you had Hrrokh attacking, but it didn't appear in the fight, which may matter since one of them hit. And, since he was enlarged, his damage increases to the awe-inspiring 1d4-3, but of course minimum damage for a successful attack is 1, so with Mugen not stabilizing, he'd've ended the fight (as it stands) at -8. If he fails to stabilize and Hrokkh hits AC 6 with a +6 to attack, he's dead even if Meinrad loses consciousness this round.

@Zerone and the rest about G, Z, B, and R fight:

1) as per the SRD description of casting while mounted:If the mount is running (quadruple speed), you can cast a spell when your mount has moved up to twice its speed, but your Concentration check is more difficult due to the violent motion (DC 15 + spell level).Ripper already seemed to indicate this in his tactics, stating that he would like to run through (-13,9) as his midpoint during the run. From that point Guts still has total cover from the southeastern set of 3 columns on the corner of his starting square. Ripper would end his run (if going through -13,9) right up against those same columns in the corner of Guts' square, at 25' altitude.

2) Guts needs to roll ASF (10%) for dat Fly scroll, and gets a reflex save against Call Lightning.

3) Guts should have used a stone of Force Screen before engaging the Bat, otherwise I would have included it my buff list before engaging Brilf. This incidently would have gotten rid of the need to roll for a random grapple target with Zhaiyad's Scorching Ray in Round 5, because Guts would have buffed.

4) Round 10 Brilf's attack would have missed vs. Guts' AC of 20 with Force Screen and Thicken Skin.

5) Round 11 need to roll randomly to see who gets hit by the Scorching Ray. The attack roll of 14 would have hit Guts' Touch AC of 10, but missed Brilf's Touch AC of 15.

Ripper unfortunately has no real way to get away from Guts' because his flying movement is higher than the Dire Bat's. He uses Call Lightning as indicated in tactics (didn't use rod but it doesn't matter really), but Guts was still able to grapple. So unless I am missing a mistake somewhere the Ripper will die by Round 4 or so, and the rest of the fight may changed based on whether or not Zhaiyad fries Guts when he is grappling in round 11.

Edit: Ripper would have had to start at (3,22) for his upper right square instead of (-2,22) if he would have wanted to run through (-13,9). His tactics were pretty implicit on that location to be run through so it shouldn't matter if his starting place was adjusted for that.

Double Edit: How do we calculate XP for multiple winners/losers again? Fight needs XP/GP for both parties.

The reason was I revoked those attacks was that I remembered the size of Hrrokh, and from a simple grabbing, he would not have been in range to attack. Meinrad needed to be in subsequent grapples for it to automatically jump in and attack. Otherwise, Esroh would have gotten an AoO on it and prevented it anyway (not to mention possibly killing it.) But, as Salrantol pointed out, upon falling ... Hrrok could simply bite an unconscious Mugen there (AC 5), leaving him with 1 HP (confrimed by the earlier attack that hit but was removed), and no matter what, Mugen will die the next round. (here are Esroh's final attacks: 23,20,6, with 8 dmg (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=119580)... which brings Meirad to -6, but regardless Mugen will die just before Meinrad no matter what.)

Just wondering how I went from -6 to -8 HPs? I'm a little confusesd on that one. Plus, if my mount acts before me on the same initiative, it would attack before I bleed. So, another question I have is, when during the round does a character who is not stabalized bleed the -1 HP?

Arrg. That's twice in a row that Niobe has dropped straight from good health to dying. The first time, it was two critical hits on the same round, but that surged Mind Thrust really takes the cake. The annoying this was that I was only one away from making my save too. Cursed Greater Psionic Endowment and all-or-nothing attacks that prevent the use of healing potions!

Ok, rants aside about rolls that totally decided the match, I'm sort of curious why Pale Rider didn't use his healing potion in an attempt to revive Niobe, which, if successful, might have changed the match.

Also, I think Farfinar used too many pp: 1 for vigor, 3 more for his Wild Surged mind thrust against Niobe, than another 3 for the mind thrust vs. Pale Rider, all out of 6. Also, I'm not aware that Farfinar ever regained his psionic focus, meaning the DC for the power is only 15, which was still a failure, although the reduced damage that should have been coming would have left Pale Rider in consciousness (unless the last die was a 1).

On the other side of the table, false life is a personal spell, and thus Pale Rider could not have cast it on Niobe, making her die immediately from the mind thrust.

Not sure if I should be commenting here or in the tavern, but since it relates to fights that happened this week (where I wasn't involved), I figured this is the better place.

Pay attention to the spells that are used. In one fight I noticed that Mage Armor was used and had a duration listed as 10 rounds (it should be 600 rounds at 1st level (duration 1 hour). The fight as it was ended in 11 rounds, but I think someone else has already mentioned a few other problems that could have changed things.

Also in the PaleRider/Niobe/Farfinar/Sasha fight - Summon Monster spells are full round spells. You start casting them and they appear just before your initiative on the following round. This would change Pale's chances considerably. Also, as was mentioned, False Life is a personal spell - so not on Niobe.

A suggestion to avoid those confusions why not list the duration next to your spell, potion or the like Ii'm sure the pitlords will appreciate it.

@ Guts & Zhaiyad vs. Brilf & Ripper AND Pitlords:

There are several big mistakes in this fight. Sorry for the errors. I wish to do what you want me to do.

1. Leave it as is to be paired this week.
2. Rerun the fight with the correct initiative (may not change much), not get paired this week.
3. Fix the end fight between Brilf and Guts/Zhaiyad.
4. Something else?

I have had little time this week, and that fight took much more work than the measley 2 credits I received for doing it. But I'm not using that as an excuse... sorry again for the goofs.

*•. Z

@ Pitlords:
No Pitlorded Team fights for Zerone, especially ones that include Psionics, as I mentioned 3 times and you so nicely ignored - no fights with psionics, which is what I've had 3 weeks in a row. Also, this place is for enjoyment, mine, yours, everyones. I don't have the time to coordinate with someone else on tactics for a team battle. I want to lose because I failed, not because I didn't have enough time to right proper tactics. Losing because 'not enough time' is no fun. So, if someone does not wish to be part of something, they should have that right, (you've jabbed me 3 weeks in a row now with minor negative comments, now it's my turn) or is the CoCo ruled by... (insert evil music here) Dun, dun, dunnnnn...

Your mount does not attack before you unless you delay to after it, which you never did. The drop to -8 comes from the attacks the rat was denied but could have legitimately made (and hit).

*•. ZMost of the mistakes that could change the battle occur after Ripper dies. If nothing changes his death occuring before anyone else's then the match comes down to Guts/Zhaiyad vs. Brilf which will be a lot easier to fix mistakes in. Guts may even end up being zapped by Zhaiyad and dying, but I don't think the fight is too confusing to edit when it is a 2v1.

Zoro, it's not as easy as you might think. I have to keep so many things in mind when doing pairings, if I would now have to respect individual wishes, it would take even longer than the usual 3-4 hours. Especially in case of psionics this is very difficult because it is an integrated part of the coco. There are few character who don't have something from the PsiHB. Read through the Psionic rules once and your fit. Also, I cannot assure you that your gladiators won't end up in a team fight. That's not chosable by players. If it would -> more things to keep in mind. Nethertheless, I'll try to keep it in mind ...for some time.

As for the the fight, I have no idea. All I know is my gladiator got waxed because he sucks. Everyone I got up against has 2 energy adaptation stones and protection from evil potions which make Druids :censored:

I've had that damn call lightning scroll for over 3 months and I the first time I use it is a useless gesture in the last seconds of life.

Very very boringxanadu, please read my previous post with some comments on this fight here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6736079&postcount=221). You instructed the pitlord to run through (-13,9) as you halfway point to cast from...unfortunately Guts started in the back of his square and so he has total cover from you due to the column formation in the SE of his starting square.

I was afraid you would Wildshape into something with a higher Str than me or with rake (like a Deinonycus or Leopard) and proceed to out grapple me so I opted to find you as quick as possible. If the Entangle had been possible (hard to do now with the random starting square setup of the arena) Guts would have been screwed...16+ to break Entangle is bad news.

You were flying anyway, so entangle would not work. You started in the front every fight in Gut's life, yet you change here :tantrum:?

Since the Ripper does not have Line of Effect to you and heard where you were and thus knew faerie fire was not an option then he should follow his tactics and summon the 1d3 Gryffs the first round flying up behind the columns in his box.

I really think you overestimate the Ripper's power in melee. He won't be any good at grapple until he can wildshape into large creatures at 8th level. Seriously, a raptor has a 19 str which gives the Ripper a +8 vs your +21 modifier. In this scenario the best things I can do is just go for touch attacks with produce flame even if in grapple and these dont do 30 HPs a round.

It is sounding like the folks involved would like the mistakes corrected and the fight extended. Any change in round one can change how the fight turns out.

As far as Brilf is concerned, I don't really care too much about the win/loss record but would like to see the errors corrected.

No one brought non-class allies and both teams had an ECL5 and a ECL6 gladiator:

ECL 5 Winner gets (win vs ECL5 xp/gold + win vs ECL6 xp/gold)/2
ECL 6 Winner gets (win vs ECL5 xp/gold + win vs ECL6 xp/gold)/2

ECL 5 Loser gets (lose vs ECL5 xp/gold + capped(lose vs ECL6 xp/gold) )/2
ECL 6 Loser gets ((win vs ECL5 xp/gold + (win vs ECL6 xp/gold) )/3)/2

Numbers
ECL 5 winner (1500xp/1600gp + 2250xp/2000gp)/2 = 1875xp/1800gp
ECL 6 winner (1200xp/1600gp + 1800xp/2000gp)/2 = 1500xp/1800gp

ECL 5 Loser = 500xp/533gp -- due to cap
ECL 6 Loser = 500xp/600gp

Pale could not have been slept, because you can only sleep up to 4hd. My mount is 3hd. This makes a HUGE difference. It would allow me to cast another melf's and get use ranged attacks like i wanted instead of getting into melee and close range of Farfnir's uber-lucky short range psi abilities.

Closer, however not quite done yet :P. It is impossible for Guts to have pinned Brilf in Round 11 because he had only just started the grapple in Round 10 and it wasn't his turn yet. Plus I hadn't indicated in Guts' tactics to pin Brilf.

This leaves the possibility of Brilf using his stone of Empathic Transfer still (if he passes a DC 20 Concentration Check, and hits with a Touch Attack....and Guts gets a Will Save for half damage whee!), which may kill Guts and heal Brilf up a bit.

Up to Sunwolf at this point if he wants further editting.

1st.-A wizard must have her spells memorized before hand (sasha does not while Vandelar was enforced this)

2nd.-besides asking to move behind the rock I never said to go look for saya quite the opposite I asked to cast a ghost sound to entice her investigate

3rd.-A wizard suffers no ill effects when his familiar dies (it's in the rules of gladius so no -400XP)

4th.-then you did not want to 'waste ' any more resources when both the ghoul touch and the shocking grasp were still available from memory! Saya had 10HP left!

Since the only option for Vandelar would be to rerun the fight and I dont really want to do it I Concede the result of the fight if not the 400XP loss

Zerone please mark Saya's memorized spells for the week.

Rules of Gladius

cohorts and allies (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6466763&postcount=13)

What happens if a cohort or ally dies?

That depends. If a cohort or ally dies in the Arena (or otherwise inside the Nimbus), it is immediately True Ressurected, re-summoned, re-animated, or otherwise made whole again, for free. There will be no negative side-effects from losing an ally (eg paladin's mount, familiar).

If a cohort or ally dies outside the Nimbus, it is really dead. The character may pay to have it raised from the dead, at standard prices. The cohort or ally will not lose a level from dying, however. If it was a leadership ally, your leadership score drops by 1 for each cohort that died.

Not that I am involved in this at all, I think SoulLord you are misunderstanding the Spells Memorized and Spell levels able to be cast, for Saya definitely has spells memorized.

1. If you prepare spells ahead of time, you do so as normal. So if you have 6/5/4 spells per day - you could memorize 6 0th level spells, 5 1st, and 4 2nd.

2. If you cast spells (whether memorized or not), you can use up to 1/3rd of them in an arena. So, for the example above, you'd get 6*0 + 5*1 + 4*2 = 13/3 = 4.333 = 5 (round up). This means you can pick anything from your memorized list, but can only use up to 5 spell levels in casting. 2 2nds and 1 1st, 1 2nd and 3 1sts, 5 1sts.

Actually... You do lose the 400 xp, losing spell levels, skills, hit points, etc if you happen to go down a level. Then at the end of the battle it is magically restored (along with your familiar) by the nimbus. Important detail? I think so.

Right - and this from the character's sheet:

Spells Memorized: 4/4/3 Domain (Spell Level Total/Cast: 10/4)
• 0 (DC 13): Guidance, Guidance, Guidance, Resistance
• 1 (DC 14): Bless, Divine Favor, Longstrider, Shield of Faith

• 0 (DC 13): Guidance, Guidance, Guidance, Resistance
• 1 (DC 14): Bless, Divine Favor, Longstrider, Shield of Faith
• 2 (DC 15): Locate Object, Resist Energy, Spiritual Weapon

locate object = 2 resist energy =2 spiritual weapon = 2
bless = 1 divine favor = 1 longstrider = 1 shield of faith = 1

total 10 levels of spells x3 = 30 total spell levels!

are you telling me that saya at 4th level has 30 spell levels?

Spells Memorized: 4/4/3 Domain (Spell Level Total/Cast: 10/4)
• 0 (DC 13): Guidance, Guidance, Guidance, Resistance
• 1 (DC 14): Bless, Divine Favor, Longstrider, Shield of Faith
• 2 (DC 15): Locate Object, Resist Energy, Spiritual Weapon

locate object = 2 resist energy =2 spiritual weapon = 2
bless = 1 divine favor = 1 longstrider = 1 shield of faith = 1

total 10 levels of spells x3 = 30 total spell levels!

are you telling me that saya at 4th level has 30 spell levels?

This means Saya has 10 spell levels available of which she can cast 4 in the arena. She gets to pick which spells she uses in her tactics. However her memorized list of spells is available so her opponent has a way to plan tactics.

I don't see where you are getting the 30 spell levels from.

Again, SoulLord - I think you are misreading or misunderstanding the Rules regarding this. Take another read of the applicable section in the Rules of Gladius (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6466659).

Here's some of the relevant text:

When fighting in the Arena prepared spellcasters can memorize their full allotment of spells, but may only cast 1/3 of their spells. They add all of their spell levels together and divide them by three, rounded up. They can cast any number of spells as long as it does not exceed this number. 0th level spells do not count and are effectively free. Prepared casters can memorize anew each fight. The same is true for other types of spellcasters, and manifesters who can use 1/3 of their total Power Points, rounded up. Perhaps a few examples are in order:

Quote:
Let's say a level 8 Wizard with Int 22 memorized the following spells:
Wizard abilities:
-Spells per day: (4)/6/5/3/2

Spells Memorized
0: Daze, Daze, Daze, Daze
1: Shield, Mage Armor, Ray of Enfeeblement, Magic Missile, Magic Missile, Expeditious Retreat
2: Invisibility, False Life, Mirror Image, Hideous Laughter, Hideous Laughter
3: Dispel Magic, Dispel Magic, Fly
4: Greater Invisibility, Polymorph

First, we add up all the spell slot levels. This wizard has 6 level 1 spell slots, 5 level 2 spell slots, 3 level 3's, and 2 level 4's. 6*1 + 5*2 + 3*3 + 2*4 = 32. Ildechai can cast a total of 32 spell levels a day.

Now, dividing that number by 3 and rounding up, we get 11. Thus, this wizard could cast 11 spell levels' worth of spells in every Arena fight. He can choose exactly which spells he wants to cast, as long as they don't add up to more than 11 spell levels. For instance, he could choose to cast Greater Invisibility, Polymorph, and Fly. Or all his level 1 spells, and Invisibility and False life... that'd only bring the total to 10, but since he wouldn't have any level 1 spells laft, the remaining 1 spell level would be wasted. Or he could cast Polymorph, Dispel Magic, Mirror Image, and two Magic Missiles. Any combination of spells totalling no more than 11 spell levels. He can use his level 0 spells as he sees fit; they make no difference.

So a character who memorizes spells can memorize his/her full allotment. However, within the battle, the character can actually use 1/3rd of these.

I don't see where you are getting the 30 spell levels from.

The main argument is IF a wizard, cleric or druid HAS to declare her memorized spells for the week.

I have been told that a caster who prepares spells ahead of time must have them declared as memorized on his character sheet and this spells cannot be changed at whim on the tactics.

Hey if I'm wrong and that's the case It's even better for Vandelar but I repeat I have been told that is not the case.

the 30th spell levels would be the case if she has all of those spells memorized for the fight.

This is an interesting argument that I had not contemplated before.

could the Elders confirm this?

could the Elders confirm this?No need to bother, it has been run this way for a very long time. Just find a fight with spellcasters that has been run by Jindl or one of the other Elders if you need reassurance.

Incidentally, SoulLord, the example that was posted is directly from the Rules thread, should you care to examine it further to clear up any confusion. At least, I am pretty sure it is, because I know I've seen that example before LOL.

Prepared spellcasters must declare all of their prepared spells before pairings. During an arena fight, they may cast any combination of these prepared spells, but the total spell levels of spells they can cast is limited to 1/3rd of the total spell levels of spell slots they are alloted.

For example:

Aku is a Wiz3 with a 16 Int. He daily spell allotment is: 4/2+b/1+b, where b indicates a bonus spell for his Int. He must declare his prepared spells prior to pairings (which means his opponents know what spells he has prepared). It may look something like this:

0th: 2x acid splash, detect magic, resistance
1st: shocking grasp, 2x sleep
2nd: blindness, mirror image

In combat, Aku can cast any of these spells. However, the number of spells he can cast is limited by the 1/3rd rule. Aku is alloted a total of 4x0 + 3x1 + 2x2 = 7 spell levels. By the 1/3rd rule, he can cast 7/3 = 2.333 -> 3 spell levels per fight. This could be 3x first level spells, or 1x first level and 1x second level spell. Since cantrips are spell level 0, he can cast all of those that he has memorized.

If Aku had a 1st lvl pearl of power, then he could use it in combat to restore a spell level he had used. This could allow him to cast mirror image and sleep (using his 3 spell levels), then use the pearl to restore sleep (thus "uncasting" a spell level), which would allow him to cast shocking grasp. Please note that the pearl of power does not add a spell level to Aku's allotted spells. It merely allows him to "uncast" a spell he had cast, as appropriate for the pearl. So, for instance, Aku could NOT cast mirror image (a 2nd level spell), then use the 1st lvl pearl of power to restore 1 spell level so that he could then cast blindness. The pearl of power can only "uncast" spells of the appropriate level.

I hope this clears it up. Maybe Cat will be able to use some of this explanation to make the FAQ a little clearer on this topic.

Thanks a Lot Jindl this clearly clarifies all of my doubts on the subject.

Now could someone please tell me what are the rewards for the Vandelar vs Saya fight for Vandelar?

Not only does the pitlord ignore me but he also posts the fight at the last possible second... not much time for changes...besides not replying to pm's

While the fight may not be perfect, it's not that far from being there. Iced, in the future, if you could please post character locations and other such minor details, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

1. Any spell caster who has to memorize spells gets to memorize their full allotment, but can only cast X number of spells from that memorized list, where X is equal to 1/3 of the total spell levels available. With these spell levels, you can cast any spell you have memorized as long as you have spell levels remaining. In the case of Sorcerer types, you can cast any spell as long as you have spell levels remaining and have not cast all spells available for that level.

2. My tactics were not followed exactly, either.

3. This has been covered by other people in posts above, thanks people! It also means that you might have lost Ghoul Touch as the spell lost, leading to...

4. You had already cast the Shocking Grasp from Memory on your Familiar. Saya at 10 HP: Saya should have never been hit by your Familiar, as I have a reach weapon and should have received an AoO alnog with the readied attack I received before it would have attacked me. Again, I have a reach weapon and whenever you took a 5’ step, retrieved a scroll, and cast it, I should have gotten an AoO against you. These minor errors are definitely in your favor.

There are everal character sheet errors on Vandelar, especially since you have xp for a 3rd level character. If the loss of 400xp for familiar is forever, which I do not believe it is, and you dropped below 6,300 xp, you'd have to drop Vandelar down to Level 3... I'll post errors on your sheet in the Violations thread.

Again straight from the rules of gladius

And the shocking grasp could have been recalled by the nifty, new, unused pearl of power but alas.

As I Said before I Yield to the result now if only I knew what the rewards are I can get Vandelar ready for this week's fight

I suppose I wasn't clear in what I wrote.

That is correct a character who memorizes spells must have them listed on their character as their memorized spells (their list of all spells memorized). From those *memorized* spells the caster can pick and choose which spells they will use in the fight up to their 1/3 spell level allotment.

Since the calculation of the fight has not been done I want to see if this is correct

Saya lvl 4 with light warhorse

Level 4 gladiator (max CA=2) brings in
...a light warhorse [CR1] (CA=1): (1/2*25) = 12.5% penalty

ECL 4 fight vs ECL 4 fight 1200 win 400 loss

Saya wins and gets 1200 xp /1200 gp (-12.5%) = 1050 xp / 1050 GP

Vandelar losses and gets 400 xp / 400 gp (+12.5%) = 450 xp / 450 gp

Is this accurate?
