Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

News & Whatnot

Monster fights are still under discussion in the Council, but activity has died down in recent days. Is there enough to put the issue to rest? What still needs to be done?

In the courtroom, there's a question about how to handle Smokesticks. I am the only elder to have made a comment there - it would be nice to have further comment (elder and non-elder alike).

Also in the courtroom, there's a renewed discussion about the hiding/attacking question. Please do comment if you have something related to say.

Lastly - please do note that there are new threads for the council and the prison.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM MindwandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Link to pairings.
Make sure that your character is not in prison.

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help.
You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool (http://wormhole.ath.cx/coco/coco_dist.php) should suffice.
Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

seeing the roster already updated from last week,
meinrad and gwerdan should still be active, as nothing was to be heard or seen from taureus in editing the fight. as much i'd like gwerdan to win, i think it would not be fair to say "well, it was past editing deadlin" - which brings me to a question. assuming i had set gwerdan to ready for this week, and sal came next week telling we would have a fight to re-run - what would happen?

Just saw that I have Turanson ready for December 18'th any chance he could come in this week anyway?

Taureus told me last week that it would be held over, but I heard nothing this week. And seeing how he didn't do his fight this week either, I don't think it's likely.

If under some strange circumstances a fight was edited long after the fact (it's happened before), then the changes are applied retroactively. No harm in editing the character sheet. Technically there's no harm in editing the sheet any time after it's been copied anyway, but players are definitely allowed to edit anytime after the "XXX wins!" appears in the summary.Just saw that I have Turanson ready for December 18'th any chance he could come in this week anyway?I usually assume that's the intent: it happens a lot. No problem.

Pairings done.

This is the first time I've enacted a State of Emergency (yes, I still had to, even with the volunteers, and I'm still one short), so if you think you're entitled to an active character than I didn't give you, let me know and I'll do what I can (no promises--things are tight).

I need a volunteer to take Longshot's monster fight; if I don't get one, the fight will just be cut.

yes
1/HD
Salrantol

12-19-07, 07:59 PM
If you look at the SR for most creatures with it (and the bralani fits this), it's 11+HD, so +1/+1HD definitely works.

And with only one exception (the ogre mage), all "X as characters" entries improve SR by 1 per level.

i wish you were right - but feel free to resign :)

i needed to have about 2800 gp after fight 2 to be able to discount the bag of tricks in the 3fc, so my equip is rudimentary at best. i took the worst case (2 losses) which meant i had only about 1100 gp total for equipment. (including 4 +1 skill boosters useless in actual combat)

While preparing the halfcelestial Gray Gluttons for the monster fight vs Elrick, I noticed that the monster is invalid. The Halfcelestial template can only be applied to creatures with Int 4 or greater, and the Gray gluttons have Int 2.

I see 2 options:

- Do the fight assuming that the monster is valid.
- Reroll the monster and give templer some time to write new tactics.

In both cases we should remove the monsters from the list for the future.

@Templer10: I think you may be under a misconception about the smoke from eversmoking bottle. Its been house ruled to produce normal smoke. Thus, it does not block LOS. It only provides 20% concealment. It is not impenetrable to vision or anything like that. Hence the reason Valen actually need to make hide checks inside it. However, that comment doesn't change anything in the fight though, since Owen was invisible to begin with.

Eversmoking Bottle: This item produces smoke. See DMG, p304 for Smoke effects.

Smoke Effects

A character who breathes heavy smoke must make a Fortitude save each round (DC 15, +1 per previous check) or spend that round choking and coughing. A character who chokes for 2 consecutive rounds takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage.

Smoke obscures vision, giving concealment (20% miss chance) to characters within it.

Ah well, I can console myself that next level, Magic Jar won't work on Valen anymore since he won't be able to be detected by spell effects (such as the life sense provided by Magic Jar...)

As for the AoEs, I tend to mix up who has the eversmoking bottle. If you'll note in the fight against Longshot that Valen had, he moved the bottle over to Quartz. So there's no guarantee that Valen is at the center of the smoke at any given time. :)

Hopefully Evasion at ECL 14 will also help with really big AoEs.

@Templer10: I think you may be under a misconception about the smoke from eversmoking bottle. Its been house ruled to produce normal smoke.

(Which is ridiculous considering it says it "totally obscures vision" right in the item description. Apparently "totally" = "20%". ;))

But, but, I did send tactics. They're in my outbox. Listed at 7:36 pm yesterday... You didn't get them? I suppose I should have put in the usual tactic sent post here...

It even says: "Recipients: whitebaron"

Hi Whitebaron, thanks for pitlording.

Fight Setup: Altair will begin in the square closest to the center of the map with his Dorje of Enlarged Crystal Shard in hand.

Brief Summary: Run, summon, blast.

Round by Round Start:
None

Main Tactics:
Make a best guess for Uranedal's starting location (i.e. if you hear something). Run towards that starting square (120'). (randomly pick an adjacent starting square if you don't know). Then make a single move looking for my opponent in that area. If not detected, continue moving towards the far starting area. Run the next turn, then slow to a normal move, again looking for opponent.

Once opponent is found:
Get some cover from him and summon an Astral Construct (3pp) (Celerity and Energy Resistance: Fire).
Place it such that it can charge.
Have the Astral Construct charge and grapple Uranedal. (Or if it can't charge for some reason, move and just grapple).
Have it deal damage with a grapple check each turn.
Use an AoOs to grapple (for damage).
After this, move into range, Overchannel and ditch psionic focus for a 4pp Energy Stun - Fire (2d6+2 damage, DC 17) on Urandeal.
This will also hit the construct, but it has fire resistance 5 and is immune to stunning.
Next turn do a 3pp Energy Stun - Fire (1d6+1 damage, DC 16) on Urandeal.
Finish with charges from the Dorje of Crystal Shard once the Construct has expired.

Backup Tactic: Pull out crossbow and start shooting.

Modifications:
Feel free to use all pp.

Important Notes:
None

which was way behind the time when tactics were due(note that this is not gmt time you are quoting here). as you did not notify me of late tactics, i would even have forfeited you about 2-3 hours BEFORE the tactics were in. since only the default tactics saved you from an autoloss, i found it reasonable to only use them.

Woops, the 7:36 pm was EST.

I owe you my apologies then. Normally I get them out by Wednesday or Thursday and forgot it was a GMT deadline. Thanks for using the default tactics in that case as opposed to an auto-loss.

Although I clearly should expand out Altair's default tactics some more to make it more pitlord friendly.

Edit: In regards to the playtest, if I'm the one holding it up, sorry for that as well. I've added an additional line to Valen's tactics in the last post you can use if you want to keep going for more rounds.

Al "default tactics" tair vs Uranedal is up.

This time I'm not really satisfied on how you applied my tactics , sorry.
1) In round 3 what's the point of moving away without casting expeditious retreat(scroll was already in hand since round 1)? I clearly stated that round 3 was the round in which I would have casted that spell.
2) Even if I didn't realize that the arena is so small there are still plenty of places where you can go to avoid him casting a close range spell and summoning a construct with direct line for charging. Cast + move behind a wall or such, even if I won't be hidden.
3) I recalled a Color Spray. I even casted a Touch of Idiocy to lower his will save (a bit unlucky there). Any reason why you didn't cast it in round 6 given Altair was in range? It was my last-resort spell.

The direct line of charging after the entangling ectoplasm has hit might be more difficult than you think (25' or 10' a move action depending on if Expeditious retreat is still up), although with proper kiting and shocking grasp application Altair might very well be dead by then.

Edit: Noticed that you were spending 4pp per overchanneled Astral Construct. Note that he only spends 3pp when doing so but his effective caster level is 4. You can't augment Astral Construct for 1 + 3, its always an odd number. The other issue is if he overchannels without his psionic focus to spend he would be taking 1d8 damage each time. Since Altair's default tactics are poorly worded, it not clear if he would be overchanneling after the first one. They were originally written with him having 5pp to spend in mind, not 11... :)

Thanks for the run. Your link to the roller is broken; you need to include the session number in the URL. This (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=2173) is the correct link.

Expeditious retreat is different from Skate so a move action would allow me to cover 50 ft. 20 ft base (reduce person clearly states speed doesn't change) and ER adds 30 ft to that amount.

With single move actions of 50' there's still room to avoid being hit by the ectoplasmic strike in first place. :)
Similarly, to avoid giving you straight lines one just needs to stay behind a formation of walls/pillars.

It's not really related with what you write above, but your character is really well made.. I am not very familiar with psionics, but given the amount of flexibility of Altair (something I love) my next CoCO character will likely be a psion :)

1) you're not really holding the playtest up, but i probably won't post any update before xmas is over. thats not due to any player, but due to xmas.

2) @overchannel: noted - i thought you'd need to spend more pp to have it active longer - misbrainer. since it's your last fight, it does not really matter anyway. @damage: since the construct hit him dead, there was no need to roll for damage. i just skipped it.

@crazy: *!"$§%* i missed the scroll drawing in round 1. still, you did some misleading statements in your tactics - "I suppose I could draw a scroll while moving (just as you do with weapons) but if I can't just take a double move (hidden) before drawing-casting to avoid being hit by the Astral thing unbuffed."

about the constructs: he has 35 ft where he can place them closer to you. so probably, he could set up a charge (maybe at -4 for cover, but he can definitely set up a charge)

what hirumajoe meant about your speed being slow - entangling ectoplasm halves your speed. so 50/2=25 or 20/2 = 10

i probably won't be able to do edits. i should not have taken this fight.

English is not my first language, so sometimes I am not able to express myself as clearly as I would.

The meaning of that sentence would be: "Given that I have always to move after attacking because Altair knows my position, while I move draw the scroll of the next spell to cast, if needed. You can draw weapons while moving, I'm not sure you can do the same with scrolls (you could surely do that if they were in a bandoleer, but I don't have one.).
If I can't move drawing a scroll then move away, and in the subsequent round just take a double move to be further away, so in the third round I can draw and cast"

I didn't want to write 5 pages of tactics though, they're already long enough as they are :)

Right.. I got a bit confused as I use meters on tt games, so I memorized 10.5 :)
Still, it's reasonable to assume that if I see him casting a whole round I can at least suppose he's summoning something and act accordingly (at least cast Mage Armor or run farther away)

It seems there is some confusion about drawing scrolls and moving. Scrolls are not "weapon-like objects" and so cannot be drawn as a free action while moving. Wands, staves and dorjes qualify - but scrolls, potions and powerstones do not.

So - if you want to draw a scroll it is a move action always.

Ok, thanks. The confusion rises from the FR bandoleer which I routinely use in TT games (even outside FR) which my DM (and I when I was a DM) allowed to be used to store scrolls and to draw them while moving.

Said that, I guess the best solution would be the efficient quiver or the writing of multiple spells scrolls
TelinArtho

Multiple spell scrolls would be fine.

Efficient quiver (at least for scrolls) is a no though.

@Whitebaron and CrazyArtificer:

Given that no one seems to be really satisfied with the fight, and Whitebaron doesn't have time for edits, would it be possible to accept a surrender from Altair and simply switch it to a win for Uranedal? I believe his tactics were sound and should have beaten Altair's default tactics.

Just to convince myself, I rolled 2 more attack rolls for Uranedal, who promptly blew Altair away. ;) I think if the expeditious retreat had been used, he would have gotten at least those 2 more shots in. Those two can be found here (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=2175).

Thanks.

I doubt I'm going to get a response in time, so I guess I'll go with Varjo's tactics on the matter, but where are the rules for "partial" emergence from an object for incorporeal creatures. In particular, such that it allows them to spot their enemy fine but still maintain cover so they can hide?

Thanks for the run.

I believe the relevant rule can be found in Court decisions: Houserule Rulings and Clarifications: Skills. In particular You are autospotted if you leave cover/concealment and your opponent has line of sight to you. This includes moving from cover/concealment to cover/concealment. The exception to this condition is that if you are moving from cover/concealment to cover/concealment and are within 1 ft/rank of cover/concealment at all times, you are still considered hidden and an opposed check would be required for anyone with line of sight to see you. Thus even with Varjo emerging fully from the ceiling, she is still hidden as she is within her ranks of cover (i.e. from the ceiling).

@Hirumajoe: Just a minor point, I think the rewards for Varjo are wrong. You have it down as Varjo wins and gains 22289 XP and 3243 (+152) GP (-25%+20.38% = -4.62%)Whilst getting 22289 XP for a single fight would be nice, I believe it should be 2289XP ;)

Also Varjo should have the following ongoing effects remaining on her dagger:
Prebuffs/Ongoing effects: Deeper darkness (4 days 12 hours), Magic aura (12 hours)

Round 25-26
Snaga moves up, grabs Druz Greatsword and CDG (dmg: 15 Fort: 24 fail)

hmm, I've got just a little question:
first: Can a small character wield a huge greatsword? I was enlarged at that point and even if I wasn't he probably couldn't use my greatsword, since it's just to large for him to use, right?

edit:

SRD: (http://forums.gleemax.com/leaving.php?destination=http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/home.html)

Weapon Size: Every weapon has a size category. This designation indicates the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed.

A weapon’s size category isn’t the same as its size as an object. Instead, a weapon’s size category is keyed to the size of the intended wielder. In general, a light weapon is an object two size categories smaller than the wielder, a one-handed weapon is an object one size category smaller than the wielder, and a two-handed weapon is an object of the same size category as the wielder.

Inappropriately Sized Weapons: A creature can’t make optimum use of a weapon that isn’t properly sized for it. A cumulative –2 penalty applies on attack rolls for each size category of difference between the size of its intended wielder and the size of its actual wielder. If the creature isn’t proficient with the weapon a –4 nonproficiency penalty also applies.

The measure of how much effort it takes to use a weapon (whether the weapon is designated as a light, one-handed, or two-handed weapon for a particular wielder) is altered by one step for each size category of difference between the wielder’s size and the size of the creature for which the weapon was designed. If a weapon’s designation would be changed to something other than light, one-handed, or two-handed by this alteration, the creature can’t wield the weapon at all.

my fortitude save of 24 should be enough to handle any other weapon's crit, I hope! ;-)

Well - a small character cannot wield a medium greatsword - that is simple enough. However, I would point out that the enlarged weapon would not remain enlarged as soon as the weapon left the enlarged character's possession.

However, your point about whether the goblin can wield the greatsword still stands though.

Nope :P

In all seriousness, I am through the buffing rounds (Round 5). Darian has taken to the air - both of his opponents are invisible and want melee. That said - they have methods to engage at range, so they are not going to be in delay - it just sucks because they didn't include tactics for a ranged fight...
Erithmu

@Druzlugor: You are correct on the weapon thing. (Although the sword does shrink to medium size once you no longer hold it.)

Since I'm in improve mode anyways here ... I'll ask this to Telin: Do you remember what we ruled on wand activation words. I think we said 'only that PC/Team' knows it, but I can't remember.

Edit: This fight is held over ... I have no time to edit before deadline.
TelinArtho

12-26-07, 11:18 AM
It really hasn't been set out specifically but here's what I have used in the past:

If the wand has been used at least once in a previous fight (or during the current fight and the word was heard) - then the opponent would know for that wand. If the opponent has multiple wands - the person wanting to use the wand would have to guess which command word is correct.

If it hasn't been used in a previous fight and hasn't been used in the current fight where the opponent could have heard the command word - then no use.

This is something that should be specified though - because it does come up often enough...

@Telin: Just curious: Are you working on Darian vs EDS fight? because I see you posting on several points on the boards with the deadline rapidly approaching and still nearly no rolls on the roller.
Since Darian finishes his 3FC with this fight, I will need some time updating him, so every minute counts.

1st: sorry that I'm causing this fight to be held over.

2nd: I'm guessing you're considering to let Snaga use my wand of enlarge person. Well I dropped it in Round 20 and moved afterwards. Snaga was squeezing through the bars at that time. So he'd have to search for it in the sewer waters where I stood before I moved to where I finished Berri off, eventhough he has no idea I ever dropped it...
edit: I dropped the wand in round 20, moved in round 21 and Snaga got us into view again in round 22.

edit2: one more thing that might just make this fight easier for you: Summon swarm (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/spellsS.html#summon-swarm) = concentration +2 rounds. Snaga stops to concentrate on the swarm that is trying to eat him in round 17 and the very next round the swarm disiipates. My guess: It should stay 1 round longer and has quite a good chance on killing him, even if he drinks his potions before it attacks.

edit3: and once more: Isn't Aiewae (Snaga's raven-familiar) sharing snaga's space and thus getting the same damage from the swarm?
