| McJarvis01-02-08, 02:03 PM | Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match. News & Whatnot To start off the New Year, the Council has decided to begin publishing its predictions of the outcomes of gladiator fights. Once the pairings are rolled, look back to this thread to see the Council's predictions. -- Here they are: Before this week: no statistics. After this week: Council is correct 46% of time. [all 13 fights observed] Fights highlighted green are correct predictions by the council. Fights highlighted red are incorrect predictions by the council. Monster fights are never predicted. In order to get stay out of the SOE - we need more active pitlords. Please volunteer today! Rules of Gladius All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius. It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2. Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders. Pairings GM MindwandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline. Link to pairings. Make sure that your character is not in prison. Pitlording You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight. If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help. You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete. If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool (http://wormhole.ath.cx/coco/coco_dist.php) should suffice. Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold. If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact. Comments & Concerns Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread. Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords. Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN! If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius! |
| TelinArtho01-02-08, 02:12 PM | Might want to fix the year there... |
| McJarvis01-02-08, 02:13 PM | Might want to fix the year there... ... <_< >_> *edit edit* I don't know WHAT you're talking about ;) |
| lonewolf01-02-08, 02:21 PM | The fight of WW was just posted, and since MWB will be late doing pairings, is there a chance that we could get an extension of an hour or so to update our characters? |
| MindWandererB01-02-08, 03:11 PM | The fight of WW was just posted, and since MWB will be late doing pairings, is there a chance that we could get an extension of an hour or so to update our characters? I haven't done the pairings yet, so I'm okay with it. An extra hour should be fine. That's 49 minutes from now... <beep> |
| lonewolf01-02-08, 03:28 PM | Since we cannot reach Mucki to tell him to update his character it doesnt look like its gonna happen. But thanks anyway. |
| McJarvis01-02-08, 03:39 PM | I haven't done the pairings yet, so I'm okay with it. An extra hour should be fine. That's 49 minutes from now... <beep> Well, I used it at least. I forgot to include Thorell's second 3FC info when I readied him :) Thanks for the extra time. |
| hogarth01-02-08, 04:06 PM | Hmmm...I noticed an interesting pattern with Balthazar Picsou: Record for Fight 1 of cycle: 0 wins, 6 losses Record for Fight 2 of cycle: 5 wins, 1 loss Record for Fight 3 of cycle: 0 wins, 6 losses That means he's due this week, right? :P |
| McJarvis01-02-08, 04:10 PM | Hmmm...I noticed an interesting pattern with Balthazar Picsou: Record for Fight 1 of cycle: 0 wins, 6 losses Record for Fight 2 of cycle: 5 wins, 1 loss Record for Fight 3 of cycle: 0 wins, 6 losses That means he's due this week, right? :P he has 6-fight cycles? :-O |
| MindWandererB01-02-08, 04:39 PM | he has 6-fight cycles? :-O No, he's had 6 fights in each of the 3 weeks of a cycle (7 week 1's now). Each of his 5 wins were in fight 2 of his 3FC. |
| hogarth01-02-08, 04:40 PM | he has 6-fight cycles? :-O He has 6 3-fight cycles so far. What's surprising about that? |
| McJarvis01-02-08, 04:46 PM | He has 6 3-fight cycles so far. What's surprising about that? Probably the way in which you worded it. MWB understood my confusion :) |
| Salrantol01-02-08, 06:25 PM | Bah, I just looked at Enoch's sheet, and saw that at the end of the line about what he's crafting, it still says Week 1/2, but it's the second week. Please correct this when listing pairings, MWB, and I apologize heartily for the inconvenience to you. Thanks :w: |
| MindWandererB01-02-08, 06:27 PM | No problem--I typically assume anyone in the middle of crafting will just continue to do so. |
| Hirumajoe01-02-08, 06:31 PM | @MWB: I think you may have missed Kai Engel in the ECL 5 bracket for being ready. (I think his title line is correct for this week - if not, ignore this post). Thanks. |
| MindWandererB01-02-08, 06:55 PM | Pairings done. Credits and any corrections will have to come later--if there's any ambiguity about something, hold off on writing tactics until I take a look at it. |
| lonewolf01-02-08, 06:58 PM | Monster Info for Elrick: 3 large winged bipeds EDIT: and Darians tactics sent to new pitlord. @MWB: your missing the [Week2] brackets on that fight. |
| lonewolf01-02-08, 07:23 PM | and Korwalds tactics in the fight of the paladins is also away. |
| Salrantol01-02-08, 08:44 PM | @MWB: Too bad about the map for Flutterthought. Any other map and Felice might have to surrender. |
| TelinArtho01-02-08, 08:50 PM | Looks to me that Kraegin was missed in the pairings. No biggie since he wasn't active with anyone anyway - but figured I'd mention it. Also - isn't the holdover of the Berri versus the other two still up? If its been finalized, I have no issue (I die first anyway), but last I knew it wasn't. |
| dulsi01-02-08, 09:06 PM | Morro's tatics sent to CrazyArtificer. Thanks for pitlording. |
| Salrantol01-02-08, 09:22 PM | @McJarvis: Tactics for Felice tu`Ria vs. Flutterthought in (thank goodness) the Sewer sent via PM. |
| Zevox01-02-08, 11:05 PM | Mithos Durrol (Zevox) vs. Balthazar Picsou (hogarth) : whitebaron [Forest] *blinks* That thing actually made it to level 7? I'm surprised. Bad map for Mithos, but we'll see what can be done. Istima Telarc (Zevox) vs. Kracknol (SauroGrenom) : Hirumajoe [Temple] Ooo, now that should be interesting - its certainly a nice surprise considering I was expected Istima to get a monster fight. Not a great map for Istima, but not the worst he could get either. Monster Info for Elrick: 3 large winged bipeds Um, isn't Elric's monster fight mine? Thats what the pairings I'm reading say, anyway. Zevox |
| Durzulgor01-02-08, 11:26 PM | Hmm, actually, the fight from 2 weeks ago, Berri vs Snaga vs Durz is still not resolved, or did I get Erithmu wrong? |
| McJarvis01-02-08, 11:32 PM | tactics received from everyone but MWB. |
| Kaigan01-02-08, 11:37 PM | Tactics for Ryalyth sent to McJarvis via PM. Tactics for Doria sent to CrazyArtificer via PM. @ hogarth and templer10: Monster Info is posted in the Battles Thread and can be found here. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14729083&postcount=1609) |
| MindWandererB01-03-08, 04:01 AM | Monster Info for Elrick: 3 large winged bipeds EDIT: and Darians tactics sent to new pitlord. @MWB: your missing the [Week2] brackets on that fight.Fixed. Um, isn't Elric's monster fight mine? Thats what the pairings I'm reading say, anyway.Sorry about that; the pitlord on that one was changed when I added Kai to the pairings, and I didn't have time to mention it.Looks to me that Kraegin was missed in the pairings. No biggie since he wasn't active with anyone anyway - but figured I'd mention it. Also - isn't the holdover of the Berri versus the other two still up? If its been finalized, I have no issue (I die first anyway), but last I knew it wasn't.Kraegin would be fighting a monster anyway. If you want the fight, I'll add it, but I'd need a volunteer pitlord. (CrazyArtificer is the only "slot" I have available, and he's a little new for an ECL 11 monster fight. No offense.) 'Rith didn't mention anything about the FFA results not being official as they stand. If the results change, I'd need to be notified. |
| lonewolf01-03-08, 05:51 AM | Alight. IŽll PM Zevox the result of the monster roll. |
| CrazyArtificer01-03-08, 06:15 AM | @dulsi, Kaigan, lonewolf: I got your tactics. @MWB: I'm not offended, I'm not sure I'd pitlord in a decent way an EL 11 fight. edit: whitebaron, got your tactics too. |
| Salrantol01-03-08, 06:22 AM | @The Dread Dormammu, re: prison: Maybe you should look up Human Paragon and see what its class features are. That should explain the apparent discrepancies of a 1st-level wizard casting 2nd-level spells. |
| whitebaron01-03-08, 06:45 AM | @lonewolf, crazy, zevox: tactics sent. |
| CrazyArtificer01-03-08, 08:55 AM | @whitebaron, TelinArtho. Tactics for Eland and Varuxor fights sent. |
| Durzulgor01-03-08, 09:16 AM | I'm feeling a bit ignored here... Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but: The fight: Setup (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14665760&postcount=1586) Fight (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14665776&postcount=1587) is still not finished correctly and so should be in it's 3rd week now if I didn't miss anything. There is still the issue of Snaga doing a CDG with a weapon he can't handle and a swarm that went out in the round after the concentration was dropped (summon swarm = concentration +2 rounds) that might have killed Snaga right then and there (or left him bleeding to death, since he has no secound potion of CLW). |
| CrazyArtificer01-03-08, 09:19 AM | Just a question.. can I start with my fights even if the deadline for tactics still isn't over? I guess one could still change them until tomorrow, but if everyone agrees, I'd start today (so we earn time in case of complaints and whatever) |
| McJarvis01-03-08, 09:30 AM | I'm feeling a bit ignored here... Pitlords/MWB will never look at the details of a fight in this manner. All he looks at is if the rewards are up- which they are in this fight. When 'rith comes back from his recovery-from-skiiing it'll be taken care of, I'm sure. |
| TelinArtho01-03-08, 09:49 AM | Just a question.. can I start with my fights even if the deadline for tactics still isn't over? I guess one could still change them until tomorrow, but if everyone agrees, I'd start today (so we earn time in case of complaints and whatever) Once you have received tactics from both/all players - if you do not have questions on them - you can start out straight away. I've had cases of posting fights on late Wednesday for particularly fast submitters and I prefer to run my fights on Thursday/Friday when I can. @Durzulgor - as McJ says - it will require notification on 'Rith's part - but it is still being worked on. Just be patient - life takes priority. |
| hogarth01-03-08, 09:52 AM | @Durzulgor - as McJ says - it will require notification on 'Rith's part - but it is still being worked on. Just be patient - life takes priority. Note, however, that on rare occasions a pitlord just leaves the fight as-is even if it's incorrect. It doesn't happen often, but it happens. In that case it's probably best to shrug and move on to the next fight. |
| TelinArtho01-03-08, 09:54 AM | Right - but 'Rith has specifically said he will work on it when he gets the chance. Anyway - @MWB - no worries on Kraegin. Monster fight this week or monster fight next week makes no difference to me. I'm never in a rush anyway. |
| Durzulgor01-03-08, 10:12 AM | Sorry, that I seem a bit impatient, its only the fact, that Snaga is in a new fight this week and in the worst case scenario, he could even end up 3rd in the fight he has just "won" and thus not level at all! And I'd just like to get Durz going again! ;-) |
| TelinArtho01-03-08, 10:13 AM | @MWB - just noticed that you didn't put Darrgon as crafting in the Pairings post (but did mark him as crafting in the roster). He should be crafting for one week: 2 scrolls of Shield (CL2) - 100gp 2 scrolls of Mage Armor (CL1) - 50gp Scroll of Mirror Image (CL3) - 150gp 2 Pearls of Power (1st) - 2000gp |
| McJarvis01-03-08, 10:28 AM | Sorry, that I seem a bit impatient, its only the fact, that Snaga is in a new fight this week and in the worst case scenario, he could even end up 3rd in the fight he has just "won" and thus not level at all! And I'd just like to get Durz going again! ;-) That is unfortunante, then. It's unlikely that the outcome will be changed at this point. [it would be unfair to snaga's opponent, at the very least] |
| CrazyArtificer01-03-08, 10:35 AM | Once you have received tactics from both/all players - if you do not have questions on them - you can start out straight away. I've had cases of posting fights on late Wednesday for particularly fast submitters and I prefer to run my fights on Thursday/Friday when I can. Great, thanks. I'll start right away then. |
| McJarvis01-03-08, 10:36 AM | @Zevox, WB: all tactics from me are out. @MWB: One set of tactics received. I'll do that fight tonight. It just occured to me that all of your characters are kind of fun to pitlord for. :) |
| lonewolf01-03-08, 11:04 AM | Samuels tactic is away. |
| Zevox01-03-08, 11:48 AM | @ Hirumajoe - Tactics for Istima have been PMed. @ McJarvis/whitebaron - Tactics for your fight received, expect that to be run tomorrow. @ templer10 - I received the monster roll from lonewolf, it stands - still the 3 large winged bipeds he mentioned on page 1. @ whitebaron - Mithos' tactics should be sent later today. Zevox |
| templer1001-03-08, 12:11 PM | Stormwind- monster roll For Varjo is done - no knowladge, 1 medium biped. |
| CrazyArtificer01-03-08, 12:44 PM | The battle of the two Paladins is up. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14731410&postcount=1610) Edit: I assume sundered wands are repaired for free, right? |
| whitebaron01-03-08, 12:59 PM | The battle of the two Paladins is up. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14731410&postcount=1610) yep, true - all damaged equipment is restored after the fight - unless you willingly did it yourself. also, all charges used from your wand by your opponent (disarm or similar actions) are not deducted. on another note: rewards seem to be off. 300 * 1+(25%+19% ) = 300*1.44 = 432 --edit-- you add all the bonusses together before applying them. just figured out how you did that - its not 300*1.25*1.19 the reason behind this is: take a person with an ally at 25% and PC at 25%. they are supposed to cancel each other out. 300*0.75*1.25 = 281. way less than you'd expect. it's the same trap people fall for on those occasions in austria when shops do the "get your taxes back"-special offers. ---- explanation for the us-readers: in europe, tax is usually already included in the price listed. tax in austria is 20% - so basically, something that costs 200e would be listed at 240e already. if they do these offers, they only deduct 16.6666% - which greatly distresses lots of people, as they know the tax to be 20%, and can't figure out that if you remove 20% from 240 you'd get more than the tax back. |
| CrazyArtificer01-03-08, 01:02 PM | Nice for Doria then ;) Edit: thanks wb, it seems I forgot the general rule that all bonuses in D&D are additive :) I guess customers in Austria have more or less the same reasons to be disappointed with prices as we in Italy.. lovely EU (the funny thing is that actually VAT is the main source of EU income) |
| Turanson01-03-08, 04:05 PM | @ templer10 - tactic for mineau vs. Vivi sent |
| templer1001-03-08, 04:24 PM | Zevox - Tactics for Elrick are out - and if you have no questions - i would appricate to know what is going to kill me this week (monsters are the bane of Elrick's existence- lost 3 out of 4 times to them) - i guessed either half fiend umber hulks or vrocks. |
| Stormwind01-03-08, 05:14 PM | @templer10: Tactics for Varjo sent. |

You're not supposed to edit any time before the fight is finalized. I do keep records of PR changes, so I can make them retroactive, but it's a royal pain in the butt, as I have to undo and redo all PR changes for all opponents of the affected characters for all weeks following the change. Cat would almost never make these changes, but I'm a little more sympathetic--ever since I lost a fight because the pitlord refused to make prot. evil effective against neutral summons. Bugged him for weeks, never got fixed. This is also one of the reasons I have so many characters "active," so that I can always play when there's an issue with others. |
| lonewolf01-03-08, 05:18 PM | (monsters are the bane of Elrick's existence- lost 3 out of 4 times to them) actually you lost only 2 of them after I edited the Unbodied fight. I know it since IŽve run them all. Zevox is stepping on my turf this week... ;) |

The issue he is concerned about is that one of his opponents in that fight[the one that won] leveled up & is currently fighting in a higher ECL bracket. That fight, in turn, will be illegetimate if the outcome of his fight changes. |
| whitebaron01-03-08, 05:39 PM | The issue he is concerned about is that one of his opponents in that fight[the one that won] leveled up & is currently fighting in a higher ECL bracket. That fight, in turn, will be illegetimate if the outcome of his fight changes. well, snaga might end up either at the end of gwerdans fists or kais sword. no way to survive in that small a map. ;) so maybe he'd even be glad to stay out *G* |
| templer1001-03-08, 06:12 PM | Telin - Tactics for longshot are out - Should be intresting and a Hell of a lot harder without the cohort. Ill say how i think the battle should be named after lonewolf post tactics. |
| lonewolf01-03-08, 06:19 PM | @Templer: Samuel tactics are also away, so fire away. :) |
| MindWandererB01-03-08, 06:31 PM | The issue he is concerned about is that one of his opponents in that fight[the one that won] leveled up & is currently fighting in a higher ECL bracket. That fight, in turn, will be illegetimate if the outcome of his fight changes. <Shrug> I don't think it's the end of the world. He may not have "earned" the right to fight in that league, but it's still a fair fight. This week's fight can standm regardless. By the way, I just sent you my remaining tactics. And templer should have my forwarded tactics from last week, as well. |
| McJarvis01-03-08, 06:37 PM | you might want to resend those. My inbox says there is 1 unread message, but I don't see any unread messages... nevermind, it's working now. |
| templer1001-03-08, 06:41 PM | @Templer: Samuel tactics are also away, so fire away. :) Ill call it the Guy who cant Manifest (samuel) vs the guy who can't Hit (Longshot) - Explanation - what does Power ressistence + dispelling buffer gives... this fight will probably be decideds on 4 rolls of 50-50 rolls. |
| whitebaron01-03-08, 06:42 PM | you might want to resend those. My inbox says there is 1 unread message, but I don't see any unread messages... nevermind, it's working now. the gleemax system uses page-caching. sometimes, it seems to overload. then nothing will be updated, and so you see read threads as unread, or an empty in/outbox though some other parts of the page indicate you have new messages. this is annoying, but fixes itself usually in 5-10 minutes time. been noticing this ever since the switch to gleemax. |

| templer1001-03-08, 06:48 PM | Im not sure Im following here; What kind of 50-50 rolls are you talking about? I did the math and deicided on energy missiles - not energy ball (so it's 50-50 To hit Due to incorporeality), If it Hits about 1-3 kills you (if you dont revigor and possibly even then if i get REALLY lucky), even with ressit energy, If it doesnt iam out Luck - I though about dispelling and/or energy ball but figured I can't Both dispell and energy ball and just blasting with sonic energy balls (only thing you can't ressit) wont do enough dmg. mental note - need to look if you have intimidate next time.... Didnt remmber that when i activated Longshot. |
| lonewolf01-03-08, 06:52 PM | so... Youre not dispelling? wow That sure screws up my tactics... YouŽll see. |
| templer1001-03-08, 07:06 PM | so... Youre not dispelling? wow That sure screws up my tactics... YouŽll see. And now you made me curios... Telin - Any chance you'll put up the fight setup Just so we can see the tactics? |
| The Dread Dormammu01-03-08, 08:44 PM | @The Dread Dormammu, re: prison: Maybe you should look up Human Paragon and see what its class features are. That should explain the apparent discrepancies of a 1st-level wizard casting 2nd-level spells. Yeah, I corrected that. For some weird reason my usual online version of SRD wasn't working and the new one I looked up had incorrect information. Sorry. |

Yug I just found out about this from the tavern! If it makes you feel any better Snaga was also supposed to have cast Exped. retreat and so would have been better able to avoid his own swarms. |
| McJarvis01-03-08, 09:03 PM | Ryalyth Lorn'elth (Kaigan) vs. Sunstroke Reborn (MindWandererB) is up. I hope no one minds- I took a short cut since MWB's tactics short-circuited Kaigan's. @MWB: I wasn't quite sure what to do with your tactics. You didn't exactly specify what you wanted to do during the turtling time- and the bit about getting down to 9 hp really gave me the feeling you meant only if you were not already turtled & brought down to 9. Otherwise- good job of recognizing that he didn't have many arrows. If you were packing powerstones of vigor it might have been different. |
| McJarvis01-03-08, 09:28 PM | PS- I lied. Flutterthought's fight will be posted tomorrow- I'm coming down with something and don't feel well... I could probably stand to get a solid 10 hours of sleep tonight. |
| hogarth01-03-08, 10:02 PM | @whitebaron: tactics sent for Picsou |
| MindWandererB01-04-08, 02:57 AM | Ryalyth Lorn'elth (Kaigan) vs. Hmm... I forgot I'd lose the dodge bonus from total defense if he sniped me. Should have gone with the tower shield instead, which would have kept that crit from confirming. Technically, Ryalith was at 1 range increment during all that, but that would have been easily corrected if it had been noticed. I was playing a numbers game, and three natural 20's out of 34 arrows was more than I'd planned on in any event. |
| Kaigan01-04-08, 03:38 AM | The battle of the two Paladins is up. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14731410&postcount=1610) Edit: I assume sundered wands are repaired for free, right? Just one thing. In the results portion you said taht Doria still has Mage Armor up. She doesn't. I cast it round 1, and the battle went on for a couple of rounds. It is only CL 1, so only lasts one hour. The time between fights is 1 hour as well, so Mage Armor is not longer a carry over buff. Apart from that, thanks for running the fight. Completely did not notice his power resistance, bah. @MWB: I forgot your tricky tactics... prone... crawling at that... yeah, i need more arrows. Kaigan |

By the way, I listed Mage Armor as <1 hour (so that it will automatically expire before any other fight), but if it's more clear I can just remove it. |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 08:19 AM | @hirumajoe: still missing altairs tactics for this week... don't want to repeat the pre-xmas faux-pas. :) @zevox: and still need tactics for mithos. i'd like to run one of those fights this evening - if at all possible. |
| CrazyArtificer01-04-08, 09:01 AM | Lelenia should bring more arrows is up (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14731444&postcount=1611) |
| hogarth01-04-08, 09:51 AM | Lelenia should bring more arrows is up (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14731444&postcount=1611) Reginald Molehusband leers at the defeated half-elf as she staggers from the arena. He's an ardent fan of hers, since she's one of his favourite users of the "Profession (xxx)" skill. [Dare I ask what "Masterwork xxx Tools" are? :)] |
| dulsi01-04-08, 09:54 AM | Well, lucky row for dulsi. Third unoptimized character in a row. I consider that a bad thing. Didn't learn as much as I liked to for tatics. Althought everyone seems to take/sunder my bow. Profession (xxx) So is "xxx" that a placeholder or is she a lady of the night? :) |
| CrazyArtificer01-04-08, 10:18 AM | @hogarth. Better to not ask that, or she might test some of those on you :P @dulsi. Don't worry, you'll always have time for that. You'd be better having a backup ranged weapon though! |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 11:37 AM | ironically, this is about the same style as our last adventuring group started out How DARE YOU, Reginald *SLAP* Lelenia heads off to the local tavern to find more civilized people. The Arena obviously attracts THAT kind of people. xxx just means undisclosed, placeholder. it's not important anyway. but if you really want to interpret something into it - just do it. will be revealed once she's hit her proper ecl. *g* about the fight: i never expected arrows to kill him. i just wanted to wear him down. things to reconsider for the nixt fight you run: 1) unless anywhere specified by the player, don't use their expendables that freely. 2) if i don't want to get into melee, why do you let me base him? 3) for arrow recovering, there's an easy thing: use nd2-n in the roller. gives easily the correct amount of arrows retrieved from a base of n. 4) don't bother changing, unless you want to remove scroll usages. i never expected my first 3fc without bag of tricks to be easy. @dulsi: well, ecl3-4 has three limiting factors in my opinion, which are why you can't really test a build here: 1) dice luck. a crit often ends the whole fight before it started. especially in the case of wizards or psions without much con or hp-feats. still, a single bow-critical might result in 25 damage. (more than many can take) 2) long-term builds. many people lack the credits or don't want to use them on an uncertain build. so they start at ecl3, and know that it will even out in the long run. 3) low-level casters. they are a big threat if their save "or die" spells hit, and a minor nuisance if you pass the save. |
| CrazyArtificer01-04-08, 12:01 PM | about the fight: i never expected arrows to kill him. i just wanted to wear him down. things to reconsider for the nixt fight you run: 1) unless anywhere specified by the player, don't use their expendables that freely. Well, I thought that you would want to take his bow out. As in tactics you told me to use Hideous Laughter, I just kept using it until you succeded. If you wanted me to stop after using 1 or 2, just tell me next time. 2) if i don't want to get into melee, why do you let me base him? Are you referring to a round in particular? if you are talking about the first hit you take, to cast hideous laughter you need to be close. If you just took a single move and the dwarf would have shooted and moved, you wouldn't have been able to cast your spell. Sure, maybe after 2-3 rounds you would have catch up with him, but taking 4-6 arrows in the meanwhile.. I thought it was the best thing to do, feel free to explain your doubts though. For later rounds, if you still want to cast hideous laughter, you simply haven't enough actions to draw a scroll and cast without staying in place. This assumes you wanted to spend multiple scrolls. 3) for arrow recovering, there's an easy thing: use nd2-n in the roller. gives easily the correct amount of arrows retrieved from a base of n. Right, it's an easier way. 4) don't bother changing, unless you want to remove scroll usages. i never expected my first 3fc without bag of tricks to be easy. I can always re-run it next Monday, but first I'd like to know (beside scrolls) what exactly went wrong in your opinion. 3) low-level casters. they are a big threat if their save "or die" spells hit, and a minor nuisance if you pass the save. This is true. My own wizard won 2 fights due to pure luck. When color spray is effectively a save or die luck helps a lot. |
| Zevox01-04-08, 12:28 PM | @ whitebaron - Tactics for Mithos Durrol vs two Griffons and random friend plus achilles' heel master have been PMed. @ whitebaron/McJarvis - Sorry guys, but I just got a call from work - looks like I'll be spending the afternoon when I had planned to run your fight there instead. I'll make it a point to run both of my fights tomorrow. Zevox |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 01:07 PM | @zevox: received tactics for mithos. will probably run today, later in the evening. don't bother to much about the fight - verren will either win quickly or go down quickly - as usual. *g* still missing: tactics for altair (again ?) @hirumajoe: a bit under 300 minutes left, or its default-tactics. @crazy: with speed 60, i can catch up in a single round, if i end my move further away, but out of range of colorspray. this is even more true with dulsi not specifying any movement after the first engagement. (so he would stay in the same position) looking back at the roll, basing might have been better than staying at range - but i never told to close at melee range - i even specified to keep away. about the scroll usage: ok, yes, it was not clear. i don't really care about that scrolls, as the dc sucks anyway. i just wanted to mention it, in case someone in the future uses more expensive expendables. note to myself: next time, take the arrows, not the bow. |
| hogarth01-04-08, 01:31 PM | @ whitebaron - Tactics for Mithos Durrol vs two Griffons and random friend plus achilles' heel master have been PMed. Say, that's right...you weren't around when Balthazar Picsou assassinated* Gakhnalak Strongjaw (with basically no help from his griffon). *At least until the fight was overturned on the grounds that Picsou's weapon was ruled to be "not a weapon". |
| CrazyArtificer01-04-08, 01:37 PM | @crazy: with speed 60, i can catch up in a single round, if i end my move further away, but out of range of colorspray. this is even more true with dulsi not specifying any movement after the first engagement. Actually dulsi specified to move along the inner circle of rocks while not in melee, that's what I would have done. To avoid basing with him you should have been able to stay farther than 40' (charge), but in that case he could just move in the opposite direction and keep firing. Thinking a bit more about it, you could have surpassed him by 45' and reached him in the following round (assuming you didn't have to turn too much), but that would have given him 2 attacks anyway (rapid shot) about the scroll usage: ok, yes, it was not clear. i don't really care about that scrolls, as the dc sucks anyway. i just wanted to mention it, in case someone in the future uses more expensive expendables. note to myself: next time, take the arrows, not the bow. I understand your concerns, it's never good when your tactics aren't applied correctly. Let me know if you require a rerun. |
| TelinArtho01-04-08, 01:44 PM | @templer10 - small issue on your tactics (starting at round 1...) - please respond quickly. |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 01:55 PM | I understand your concerns, it's never good when your tactics aren't applied correctly. Let me know if you require a rerun. nope. never expected to win even a single fight in my first 3fc. looking at my equipment, you see why. will buy some potions or scrolls between 3fcs, but obviously- i've still got no money. ;) |

| whitebaron01-04-08, 02:15 PM | @Whitebaron: Tactics sent for Altair at 11:10 am PST. :) already received, response sent for clarification |
| dulsi01-04-08, 02:34 PM | Actually dulsi specified to move along the inner circle of rocks while not in melee, that's what I would have done. Actually that wasn't my intent. whitebaron is right that I didn't plan on moving if I could shoot. I'll be sure to make that more specific in the future. No point in chasing after people since everyone is faster than me. |
| Zevox01-04-08, 03:26 PM | @ whitebaron - Just spotted hogarth's tactics for Balthazar, and theres a little problem. Namely, only medium and smaller creatures can enter the canopy of the forest, so his large Griffon can't get him into it. It could get him up just beneath it - provided it has a section on the map where it has the required free space around it to fly - but then he'd need at least a climb check to get up into it, and with a -2 climb, that doesn't work too well for him. Zevox |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 03:34 PM | actually, the description tells that they cannot make use of the branches in the canopy, there is nothing that indicates you could not fly up there? |
| templer1001-04-08, 03:35 PM | Gakhnalak VS darian is done (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14742974&postcount=1615). |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 03:37 PM | one mistake i see in darians fight: a flail is no slashing weapon, and therefore you don't get double damage for a hit with it in a dive. but still, it might not matter with those dice. |
| Zevox01-04-08, 03:37 PM | actually, the description tells that they cannot make use of the branches in the canopy, there is nothing that indicates you could not fly up there? The line immediately preceding the ones you're looking at does. The canopy is horizontaly impenetrable and at 30ft height. Medium and smaller creatures can walk through the thick canopy just like other creatures walk on the ground (Large creatures are too massive to make use of the branches) If the canopy is impenetrable at that height and only medium or smaller creatures can walk through it, that means large and above can't enter it, no? Zevox |

Zevox for me, this just means that you can't get out of it towards more height. the description is worded poorly, i agree - but that's the thing i believe it should be. and if it is completely impenetrable, how is anyone able to enter it? |
| templer1001-04-08, 03:57 PM | one mistake i see in darians fight: a flail is no slashing weapon, and therefore you don't get double damage for a hit with it in a dive. but still, it might not matter with those dice. ACtually - it did matter - just not enough. |

In which case, a claw probably would have been the best improvisation here. I got lucky--I didn't see the winged boots, and based all my tactics on Darian being on the ground. |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 04:13 PM | actually, its darian, not felice. two quick things: a) i hate average maneuverability in a flying combat b) can i get a statement from you, mwb, on the canopy issue or do i need to take it to the courtroom? |
| MindWandererB01-04-08, 05:11 PM | actually, its darian, not felice. two quick things: a) i hate average maneuverability in a flying combat b) can i get a statement from you, mwb, on the canopy issue or do i need to take it to the courtroom? Sorry--I'm fighting both of them this week, and they're both kineticists. Large creatures can't walk on the branches (stated clearly), and they don't have the horizontal clearance to fly with all the branches. Edit: I've clarified the language. Speaking of which: I think I should take a look at the various map rules. Cat invented them, and in many cases there are rules in the RAW for dealing with such terrain that he simply didn't like. And while I'm at it, I think the city "ceiling" needs a nerf. Edit: How have people been using the pipes in the sewers? I never figured out how Cat intended for them to work. |
| TelinArtho01-04-08, 05:32 PM | I think using the pipes has only come up in one of the fights I have run before. In that case, a character at one end could listen as if he was exactly 5ft from the other end of the pipe. This only applied when he was adjacent to the pipe and only when he specifically took an action to do so. It certainly is a confusing entry that could be done away with though. |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 05:37 PM | @mwb: as i'm already at the end of a hard fight, i'll use the new, clarified rules, after this fight. as both griffon, and hippogriff in this case, can enter the canopy, it is still fair game. |
| whitebaron01-04-08, 05:56 PM | Mithos vs. Griffons is up. |

I agree that most of the maps could do with a look over. I'm not certain if it's a good idea to get rid of the 'ceiling' in the city map as it would give a significant advantage to fast, flying creatures just as the plains map already does. However I do think that removing the 'epic mage solution' would be good ... just make it a no fly zone above 50ft. |
| templer1001-04-08, 06:04 PM | About the City - I actually like the City ceiling - It creates another element you have to deal with and it makes possible for summoners able to use intresting strategies to use It And make Bull rush actually usefull in one other map exept the temple. |
| MindWandererB01-04-08, 06:14 PM | REMINDER The forums will be down on Monday for an unspecified amount of time. All pitlords, be sure to download all your character sheets and tactics on Sunday if you plan to run the fights on Monday. I agree that we could use some more interesting terrain features here and there (see my request in the tavern for new maps), but auto-loss is a bit severe. I'm thinking it should either be an impenetrable barrier (like the sides of the map) or it should have some sort of dangerous but nonlethal effect (like acid fog, or better yet, a cold or lightning version of that (since we already have acid in the sewer). |
| hogarth01-04-08, 06:42 PM | One comment re: Picsou vs. Mithos -- once the griffon is grappling Mithos, they should all (griffon + Mithos + hippogriff) fall to the ground since the hippogriff is not strong enough to hold them; I don't know why you have them hovering in mid-air. Note that Mithos will likely end up prone since he doesn't have 5 ranks in Jump. EDIT: This is minor, but you also cheated the grappling griffons out of one attack per round. They should get two natural weapon attacks (because of their +7 BAB), plus two rakes. |
| lonewolf01-04-08, 08:01 PM | Gakhnalak VS darian is done (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14742974&postcount=1615). Tough luck with those rolls. *sigh* Thanks for the run. EDIT: on the fight summary: Darian used 21 pp not 7. The charge of the winged boots is also missing. ty |
| whitebaron01-05-08, 06:17 AM | @hogarth: aerial grapple is nowhere defined in the srd. i'm not even sure a monster could, in fact, start a grapple while flying if it cannot use snatch or similar feats. since you don't fall prone, even when pinned, i see no reason for them griffons to not stay airborn, though. about the extra attacks: you don't get iterative attacks with natural weapons. only with unarmed strikes. and you said to use the bite... but, i did one mistake - rakes shouldn't get the -4, as per the rake description. seeing mithos high ac, i doubt any rake hit though. - checked: one rake would have hit. |
| templer1001-05-08, 06:30 AM | WB - dont know the situation but Aerial grapple - while possible it's a problem to any creaure without good manuverability or above since avrage and below need to move each round to maintain flight (half move at least) and in order to move while grappling you need a grapple check and then to move at half speed - so it's a zero sum game. |
| hogarth01-05-08, 09:28 AM | @hogarth: aerial grapple is nowhere defined in the srd. i'm not even sure a monster could, in fact, start a grapple while flying if it cannot use snatch or similar feats. since you don't fall prone, even when pinned, i see no reason for them griffons to not stay airborn, though. about the extra attacks: you don't get iterative attacks with natural weapons. only with unarmed strikes. and you said to use the bite... #1: Here is what the CoCo has to say about mounted grappling. Q: How does grappling a mounted opponent work? A: If you grapple someone who is mounted, you join him on the mount. If the mount cannot carry both of you, you are then considered to be grappling your opponoment adjacent to the mount, with the mount having the opportunity to take an AoO unless the attacker has the Improved Grapple feat. If the mount decides to move, the rider falls off unless he wins an opposed grapple check against the attacker, in which case the attacker is moved along with the rider as the mount moves. So Mithos is no longer mounted, since a hippogriff cannot carry a griffon. Now a creature with average flight speed cannot hover, so unless it succeeds on a grapple check to move the grapple it stalls and falls. I had no intent to try to remain airborne. Note that I only intended the bite attack to be used for sundering a wand, but I admit it's not perfectly clear. Order Huey to grapple Mithos at all costs and to bite + rake (sunder) any wands he's holding before grappling him to death. So I meant "bite any wands", then "grapple him to death". I'll be clearer next time. #2: Here's my reasoning why you fall prone at the end of a fall. A DC 15 Jump check or DC 15 Tumble check allows the character to avoid any damage from the first 10 feet fallen and converts any damage from the second 10 feet to nonlethal damage. If you have ranks in Jump and you succeed on a Jump check, you land on your feet (when appropriate). If you attempt a Jump check untrained, you land prone unless you beat the DC by 5 or more. So it seems to me that some Jump checks are necessary. |
| templer1001-05-08, 09:36 AM | Vivi vs mineau is done (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14747523&postcount=1617) |
| whitebaron01-05-08, 09:48 AM | @hogarth: this still does not cover whether you are still grappling after the fall or not. i'd say no, since the griffon does fall on his next turn, mithos should fall immediately after he leaves his mount. basically, the whole aerial grapple is strange. grapples for griffon: +15,+10 1d4+4 nonlethal. no rakes available when doing this. @vivi vs. mineau: familiars never get higher ground on an attack - as they have to enter the square of the one they are to hit. since 20 or 21 does not change anything, its a useless bit of information - but just wanted to point it out. |
| hogarth01-05-08, 10:13 AM | @hogarth: this still does not cover whether you are still grappling after the fall or not. i'd say no, since the griffon does fall on his next turn, mithos should fall immediately after he leaves his mount. basically, the whole aerial grapple is strange. grapples for griffon: +15,+10 1d4+4 nonlethal. no rakes available when doing this. #1 - I think falling happens immediately. Gravity doesn't wait until it's your turn! The whole point is that the grapple doesn't happen in mid-air unless someone tries to keep it there (which isn't happening in this case). #2 - Why don't you get the rake attacks if you grapple for damage? Where does it say that? |
| whitebaron01-05-08, 11:18 AM | in the rake description. you get additional rakes to your natural attack. so you need to take the "attack with light weapon = natural attack" action in grapple. about falling: no, the griffon does not fall instantly. it only falls next round, when it is not moving. else it would fall every round after its move. |
| Turanson01-05-08, 02:52 PM | One strike I'm out. Thanks for the run templer Edit just one thing you have reversed the used items and spells |

Mithril chain shirt, to be precise. Had it been otherwise, I'd probably have gone for a different energy type, since there would be no purpose to the electric ray. And yes, I accounted for that in the attack roll (was at +10 - 6 base, +1PBS, +3elec ray), and it still missed. Zevox |
| hogarth01-05-08, 07:14 PM | in the rake description. you get additional rakes to your natural attack. so you need to take the "attack with light weapon = natural attack" action in grapple. Funny...this guy named "whitebaron" claimed that you can make a grapple check to pin and then make rake attacks in the same round. I wonder who's right -- whitebaron or whitebaron? ;) http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=13701256#post13701256 |

I wonder who's right -- whitebaron or whitebaron? ;) http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=13701256#post13701256 first of all, i don't like your tone in this. second, i wonder why you searched for exactly my post, from half a year past, to make myself look stupid? third, i did not read the rake description then. i read it now, as i actually had to hold such a fight. Normally, a monster can attack with only one of its natural weapons while grappling, but a monster with the rake ability usually gains two additional claw attacks that it can use only against a grappled foe. Rake attacks are not subject to the usual –4 penalty for attacking with a natural weapon in a grapple. Also note, that after this remark, i have to call the fight finalized. If you are unhappy with how it was run, inform pitlords you want a rerun from another pitlord. I'm not here to get hit with cheap remarks. |

I'm disappointed that you're not interested in correcting the fight, though. |
| MindWandererB01-05-08, 09:06 PM | Cool it, you two. hogarth, please try not to be snide, especially with someone who's been offended before. whitebaron, if you have a problem with something someone says about you, please take a break from the computer and come back in ten minutes when your blood pressure had gone down a bit before you reply. I debated whether I should report this incident or not; I decided against it, but be aware that in the future I may well have to get a WizO involved. (And also remember: anyone can report a post, not just me, if they feel it's inappropriate. So even if I think it's okay, someone may disagree with me, and the WizOs are a little delete-happy these days.) |
| McJarvis01-05-08, 11:05 PM | Well, _I_ always appreciate hogarth's sense of humor. Even when it's pointed at me ;) RE: Marius's fight: wow...I didn't expect to win that one, but I guess it makes sense that wb didn't want to burn through his dorjes of vigor. |
| MindWandererB01-05-08, 11:09 PM | That goes for you, too, McJarvis. WB has a perfect right to get offended--he should just avoid lashing back when he is. You shouldn't put him down for it. |
| McJarvis01-05-08, 11:10 PM | That goes for you, too, McJarvis. WB has a perfect right to get offended--he should just avoid lashing back when he is. You shouldn't put him down for it. I was more trying to encourage hogarth- but I understand your point. |
| Salrantol01-06-08, 12:02 AM | I was more trying to encourage hogarth- but I understand your point.Stop wasting energy with encouragement when you could be pitlording! Now if only I could find a smiley of a taskmaster cracking a whip.... |
| McJarvis01-06-08, 12:07 AM | Stop wasting energy with encouragement when you could be pitlording! Now if only I could find a smiley of a taskmaster cracking a whip.... Hah! Sorry about that- "getting a solid 10 hours of sleep" turned into "getting a solid 15 hours of sleep and calling in sick to work". I've been slowly recovering since then- and if I have a headache, I just can't pitlord. I'm pretty sure I'll get it done while I'm doing laundry tomorrow. Pretty sure... |
| CrazyArtificer01-06-08, 07:58 AM | WB has a perfect right to get offended--he should just avoid lashing back when he is. We all have a bad day from time to time, I guess yesterday was wb's one. |
| whitebaron01-06-08, 01:53 PM | Thorell vs. Varuxor is up. @mwb: as i'm not ToK, i won't rerun this fight, it might end like a well known scenario. if any of the fighters have a problem with the fight or its result, please report it to pitlords. i easily spent 4 hours on this fight, and about all of it should be wrong - according to house rules nobody wanted to mention, map restrictions that where not clear enough worded etc. @hogarth: apology accepted. still i won't touch this just in case... the devil inside... you know. |
| McJarvis01-06-08, 02:26 PM | Thorell vs. Varuxor is up. Thanks for the run. Looks like the court ruling wouldn't have changed the outcome of this fight- I really only wanted to camel attack in there to give me a bit more of a buffer for trying to knock him out in one shot anyway. :) On the other side of things- does this mean everyone thinks thorell is an alpha strike build now? I've been thinking of him more as a combat brute-who-can-go-invis, but I guess he does do considerable damage... |
| lonewolf01-06-08, 04:42 PM | Snaga vs. Gwerdan "Twofist" Grummler vs. Kai Engel is up. |
| whitebaron01-06-08, 04:59 PM | Snaga vs. Gwerdan "Twofist" Grummler vs. Kai Engel is up. thnx for running. the cavern definitely favored my character in this ffa. |
| TelinArtho01-06-08, 07:35 PM | Eland vs Undurion is up. |
| Durzulgor01-06-08, 07:47 PM | Damn! Undurion won! I should really get more buff-spells to give my enemies more time in hiding! ;-) I knew I'd win a fight sooner or later, but already the third one? I should do something against my high saves! ;-) Thx for the run Telin! |
| CrazyArtificer01-06-08, 08:59 PM | Thorell vs. Varuxor is up. If I had a bit more luck with Thorell missing me in the last round, I could have defeated him with an overchanneled Energy Missile in the same round. Too bad dices weren't with me :) @Durzulgor. You'be been lucky I didn't consider the chance of being blinded.. after this run I should have double moved in the pillars and tapped the tattoo only after that. Even then, I should have thought about crawling to you, shield in hand and in total defense, even if that would have taken 2-3 years. ;) |

From a "realism" perspective- I'd love to see how you're going to turn the animals into little fur balls again to scoop them up ;) @All my gladiators: I'm working on rewards now. I don't like to post them until at least one gladiator from each fight has ok'd the fight, so things will get held over if they need to. |

Fight looks OK--not much you can do when every attack and every save rolled is a natural 20. I don't think any gladiator with any tactics can beat that in a fair fight. |
| Durzulgor01-07-08, 02:01 AM | @Durzulgor. This is one of those times when I wish you'd notified me that you'd decided my tactics were illegal--I would have given instructions to execute my own animal. Otherwise, yeah--looks like you did what I wanted. |

Come to think of it- the bag doesn't say that ordering an animal back into it will preserve a use of it either. Has this been decided in the court? edit- The phrase I'm looking at is- Up to ten animals can be drawn from the bag each week. So after 10 draws it's used up- regardless of whether you put things back in, they were slain, or the 10 minutes got used up....? edit2- Or was this entire tactic meant to get around there only being 1 animal allowed at a time? I guess that would make alot more sense... |

| CrazyArtificer01-07-08, 11:56 AM | Thorell vs. Varuxor is up. WB, just noticed.. aren't rewards a bit off? Thorell has a camel, so I should get 375 gp and xp, right? |

| lonewolf01-07-08, 12:00 PM | Longshot (templer10) vs Samuel Highground (lonewolf) is up. thanks for running I outsmarted myself with those tactics and thus had no real chance to win. | templer1001-07-08, 12:02 PM | thanks for running I outsmarted myself with those tactics and thus had no real chance to win. If longshot would have been on his second fight of the week - you would have most likely been correct on those tactics since i tend to have many more PPS on fight 2/3 (and i would have dispelled/energy balled). on another note - longshot (more or less by accident) leveled so i suspect i have a long wait until i get some comapny in ECL 14 (probably the campaign's ends + some more). |
| CrazyArtificer01-07-08, 12:03 PM | The camel is an animal companion, so it doesn't count towards rewards. :ton: too much things to consider with Allies for me atm :) |

| McJarvis01-07-08, 02:04 PM | what predictions? Check out the first post of this thread :). The council will be making fight predictions every week based off PR alone- we'll see how good of a system it is of predicting fights in the long run. [if PR represents character strength, it should roughly be able to be used to predict fights] It'd be really interesting if this method of guessing fights only turned out a 50/50 record... |

There any reason that was limited to the ECL 7 and below fights? We did have some upper level non-monster fights this week. I don't know if any are done yet (I know Istima's isn't, but his wasn't the only one), but the present post gives the impression they were excluded for some reason. Zevox |

Is that true that Snaga's undead will just sit there like useless lumps, I thought they would just attack whoever is closest including Snaga? from the skeleton description in the MM: A skeleton does only what it is ordered to do. It can draw no conclusions on its own and takes no initiative. so yeah, I would suggest selling that robe of bones again. 2. Shouldn't Two Fist have gone for Kai first when he saw him struggling in the webs? Kai was struggling in the webs, but he was invisible at that time, so Gwerdan pursued Snaga. by RAW Gwerdan wouldnt even have been able to pinpoint Kai iin the web(except through listen checks of course). |

That must have been a cut/paste error earlier in the week when I initially posted the predictions. I can go back and edit that now. edit- ok, looks like I was a bit preemptive on saying everything was in. I think we're still waiting on Istima's fight. |
| whitebaron01-07-08, 02:45 PM | @tdd: hit the training hall for a full refund of the item. since it was bought in rules-error, it should be free to switch to another item even within the 3FC. |

Yep, and I wouldn't necessarily presume that one to go by the Council's prediction either. I didn't take the easy way out of that fight, so it could go either way. Kracknol is definitely tougher than that PR would lead you to believe. Zevox |

Kracknol is definitely tougher than that PR would lead you to believe. Zevox I think I'm gonna track %'s by individual ECL as well, so we can see if there is a big difference as people level up. [and supposedly with more fights they are more accurately represented] Hell- might as well throw ECL3 in there too if I do that. *edit edit edit* edit- Adding in ECL3 plummeting the score down to 50% again. Istima's fight is kind of mute IMO since with an odd number of fights it's impossible to represent a true 50-50. This is way easier than my last system of tracking gladiators- even if it doesn't isolate anyone. |

| Stormwind01-07-08, 03:25 PM | @templer10: I believe you've forgotten a couple of minor things in Varjo's fight thus far: The lighting condition for this week is Bright light, thus I believe that my opponent should be dazzledDazzled: The creature is unable to see well because of overstimulation of the eyes. A dazzled creature takes a –1 penalty on attack rolls, Search checks, and Spot checks. Varjo's shadows are at 5ft height and thus should get a +1 height bonus to their attack rolls Sorry about causing any difficulties, but I figured that's it better to mention these earlier rather than later ... |
| MindWandererB01-07-08, 05:03 PM | Or was this entire tactic meant to get around there only being 1 animal allowed at a time? I guess that would make alot more sense...Yes, that was the point. Having an animal lying unconscious on the map that I can't replace would have derailed my tactics pretty thoroughly. Re: predictions: Hm, interesting. I track PR weekly, and normally numbers less than 100 are more common than numbers greater than 100 (so the predictions are accurate more often than not). I can make those changes public if it would help. However, that trend has been deteriorating as of late. Overall the trend is in favor of the "Council," but it's not by as much as it used to be. (Although if you average in Dec. 5, it'll do a lot for the Council.) |
| McJarvis01-07-08, 05:04 PM | Yes, that was the point. Having an animal lying unconscious on the map that I can't replace would have derailed my tactics pretty thoroughly. The natural improv would have been to have you lead the kineticist away & come back to CDG the animal. So I don't think the clarification was necessary- the intent was obvious in your tactics. [as far as how you wanted the fight to go] |

Just one minor detail, if you could change the free activity under the rewards. Varjo was performing for 152gp as her free activity. Thanks To answer your question regarding the [Blade of the night], a ghost touch weapon is treated as either incorporeal or corporeal, as is most beneficial to the wielder (see DMG). If incorporeal then it is resolved as a touch attack (see RotG: There, not There (part 3) (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040928a) under ghost touch weaponry). |

| Zevox01-08-08, 02:34 PM | Elric Flamebrother vs 3 Vrocks, such as it is, is up. I hope theres no objection to my decision with this. Istima vs Kracknol is up here. I think that could change the fight quite dramatically. Zevox |

The boots are just fly 3/day on Kracknol, they don't hold the spell separately from him somehow. I think that could change the fight quite dramatically. Zevox Actually it was ruled recently that the boots do not really bestow the fly spell on you, but just give you the ability to fly. This has 2 major implications: - You cannot dispel the fly(except for 1d4 rounds with a targeted dispel on the boots) - If you Sunder/destroy the boots the owner is downed. That second part happened to Kracknol recently vs Valen Sky(I was pitlord). |

That a dispel would knock fly off Kracknol and thus slow him down enough to avoid was one of the things I was assuming when I wrote my tactics - seems the most logical way for them to work. Damn I wish I'd known about this ruling. Zevox |

| Hirumajoe01-08-08, 03:09 PM | Can someone point me to where this "ruling" happened? I don't specifically remember it and I don't see it in any of the threads I have locally... In the Tavern I believe, sometime between November 28th and December 2nd. |
| TelinArtho01-08-08, 03:11 PM | Yup - just found it. Apparently I hadn't updated my version of Tavern X in a while... The discussion can be found starting at post 3822 and ongoing from there. There wasn't a vote on it: [Post 3822] Author : Hirumajoe Date : 11-29-07 01:32 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) Question in regards to winged boots. Do they: 1) Cast fly, and thus the effects of a targeted dispel (or suppression effect) on the wearer is sufficient to remove it. 2) The effect isn't cast, but the boots themselves provide the flight for the duration. Thus a dispel would have to be targeted directly on the boots to cause them to not function for 1d4 rounds to actually eliminate the flight. My reading of them suggests the second, but I'm not positive. And if the second is correct, anyone have any clue how many hit points (and the hardness) boots have? [Post 3824] Author : hogarth Date : 11-29-07 02:20 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) MWB thought it was #1 when I suggested sundering Arden's winged boots in the Strongjaw/Picsou vs. Arden fight. I thought it was #2. [Post 3829] Author : Macbrea Date : 11-29-07 03:42 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) You should be able to dispel the winged boots. As they: "On command, the boots sprout wings at the heel and let the wearer fly, without having to maintain concentration, as if affected by a fly spell." As a result they grant the ability to fly like a fly spell. But don't actually cast a fly spell on the wearer. You shouldn't be able to actually sunder the boots because they are part of armor. But touching them with the Suppression weapon should be possible. [Post 3832] Author : MindWandererB Date : 11-29-07 04:02 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) Re: winged boots: I recant my earlier position. Rereading it, the boots definitely fly themselves, rather than making the wearer fly. I do think they can be sundered; boots aren't armor (only armor is armor), and there are rules for sundering worn objects. [Post 3834] Author : Hirumajoe Date : 11-29-07 05:07 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) @Flying boots: So we seem to all agree on option 2 (i.e. the boots provide the flight, they don't "cast" it.). However, now I've got a GM saying they can be sundered while one elder things they are armor and shouldn't be sunderable. Anyone else want to weigh in? And other than the subsequent discussion on the sundering - that's all there is. I'd hardly consider that a consensus (one elder and one GM in the discussion - that's it). If there is still want for a discussion about this - please bring this post into the courtroom for follow up. |
| lonewolf01-08-08, 03:13 PM | here is MWBs statement about this issue. |
| Stormwind01-08-08, 03:40 PM | Actually - per the ROTG - it makes it an incorporeal touch attack. True ... my mistake :D |
| The Dread Dormammu01-08-08, 04:38 PM | Berri vs Snaga vs Druz I ... 3 weeks later ... Results changed and rewards changed. Well, looks like this is the fight from hell, because now I have a problem. First off let me say I'm sorry for coming back to this. In Snaga's tactic it says: "Cast expeditious retreat from memory and draw scroll of Summon Swarm. Then head back into the tunnels and move to where I think one of my opponents is, by squeezing through a grate. When my opponent is in sight cast summon swarm from scroll (but not directly on them so as not to spoil invisibility). Maintain concentration and watch the fireworks (use my better speed so that foe is always closer to the swarm.)" Also apparently Snaga's undead wolves don't fight (see elsewhere in this thread.) |
| Erithmu01-08-08, 04:50 PM | You have to bring this up now .... Just some counter points to your arguments. Your not the fastest one ... Druz has 50x2 = 100ft You would have 30+30 = 60 (single move + std to hold conc) I don't see much changing in the long run, If you would like me to still look at it ... It goes into week 4 and probably will push week 5 (no time this weekend, I'm not evening picking up a fight this week, and running one gladiator). Just sketching it out ... Druz will probably drop Berri quick, then you will play outrun the swarm and be left in a similar spot. I saw the wolf thing ... it is kinda a moot point, they didn't do much anyways. |
| The Dread Dormammu01-08-08, 05:08 PM | You have to bring this up now .... I know and I'm sorry, it's the fight that won't die. Just so you know I did bring it up before in this thread, responding to Druz. Just some counter points to your arguments. Your not the fastest one ... No I'm not the fastest one, but I would have been faster than the swarm with it's speed of 40. That was the point of casting Exped. also, I would have gotten to Druz faster so my invisibility wouldn't have worn out as quickly. Those extra 2 rounds could make a difference. Don't get me wrong, I could be convinced otherwise. After all it's not like Snaga has a stellar record of victories (probably why I'm fighting for this one). |
| Erithmu01-08-08, 05:24 PM | My point is that so does Druz ... so the swarms are as effective as before (not very). Granted you don't take the damage, but I don't have any tactics for what to do after that fails. I mean I tried sleep, but w/ you casting ER, I would probably just go for the surrender. Part of the frustrating part is the lack of a plan B. I can't have you submit one, and I did what I could. So the point blank yes/no is ... do you want me to run it again. If yes state so and we go to week 5 (most likely and you can't go Questing till it is done). I'll run it from the Summoning and switch to ER and then if you run out of scrolls surrender. If No it goes as is. |
| The Dread Dormammu01-08-08, 05:38 PM | Mmm, think I'd rather go questing. If I'm out of spell levels it doesn't seem like I could win. Thanks for responding. |
| Erithmu01-08-08, 05:47 PM | @TDD: Thank you. I hope you understand that I'm not persuading you to not mention things. The comment got lost in the wave of me getting super busy, and I accept responsibility for that error. |
| The Dread Dormammu01-08-08, 08:49 PM | So, I know that we're not going to re-run it but I could have cast sleep and exped. retreat and web, That's 4 spell levels right? |
| Erithmu01-08-08, 09:02 PM | You could have, however I (and most pitlords) are reluctant to cast spells that are not specifically listed in tactics. |
| MindWandererB01-09-08, 04:32 AM | Another interesting statistic for the week: out of 16 fights, 6 of the winners levelled up. I think that's a record in my experience--and might partially explain why there were so many upsets (more gp). @templer: Please be more careful with your 3FC summaries. I'm updating Gak, and his is all wrong. It should be: Time Between Fights: 1 hour Prebuffs/Ongoing Effects: Blurgta's Longstrider (<4 hrs. remaining) Items Used: 2 scrolls of resist energy, 1 scroll of invisibility Spells or Powerpoints Used: 6 SL (blurga – bless, fly, spiritual weapon) x/day Abilities Used: none Free Activity: craft 161 gp |

That's good news.. one can see that low levels gladiators are plenty, while on higher levels the roster is a bit poor. |
| hogarth01-09-08, 06:54 AM | Yup - just found it. Apparently I hadn't updated my version of Tavern X in a while... The discussion can be found starting at post 3822 and ongoing from there. There wasn't a vote on it: And other than the subsequent discussion on the sundering - that's all there is. I'd hardly consider that a consensus (one elder and one GM in the discussion - that's it). If there is still want for a discussion about this - please bring this post into the courtroom for follow up. As you have pointed out to me before, not everything requires a vote: if one Elder issues an opinion and there are no voices to the contrary, then it's official policy. |
| Stormwind01-09-08, 08:09 AM | @templer10: I have held off on updating Varjo so that you can confirm her free activity from her title line, however I need to update Varjo soon so that she is ready for pairings. I would appreciate if you could correct her rewards here to include her free activity (Free Activity: Perform 152gp) as soon as possible. Thanks Storm |

| Stormwind01-09-08, 09:41 AM | @templer10: Thanks for the edit and the run (sorry about bugging you with the reminder - some people seem to need reminders. In the future, I'll remember that you don't :D) |
| TelinArtho01-09-08, 09:53 AM | As you have pointed out to me before, not everything requires a vote: if one Elder issues an opinion and there are no voices to the contrary, then it's official policy. While true - the "policy" that is created in this situation should not be considered a "vote." What I was pointing out is that a number of elders did not offer comment or support for the policy that was created, so if someone wanted an official vote to let the issue rest, they should bring it up to the council. |
