| Sindorin06-22-05, 01:05 PM | This thread is for questions, comments, and concerns solely regarding the pairings for this week. When you comment you should be nice. If you are mean, we will make you eat your own head. This is a link to the rules here: The Rules of Gladius (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=448520) |
| Caterane06-22-05, 01:10 PM | I have problems editing my sheets. Always says technical problem. Do you have the same problem? |
| Sindorin06-22-05, 01:19 PM | I haven't encountered any problems. |
| Caterane06-22-05, 01:24 PM | If you don't change anything, it works but as soon as I want to modify the sheet, technical problems arise. EDIT: Test |
| Huan06-22-05, 01:27 PM | I have edited frequently throughout the last hour with no problems. |
| King Uther06-22-05, 01:28 PM | I just edited to test it out and it works fine. |
| SoulLord06-22-05, 01:29 PM | I also have no problems editing perhaps cleaning the cache or switching to another browser will help? |
| Caterane06-22-05, 01:33 PM | There seems to have been a slight problem with the Wizards.COMmunity Boards database. Please try again by pressing the refresh button in your browser. An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, who you can also contact if the problem persists. We apologise for any inconvenience. Great. So it's only my characters. I'll probably post any changes here. |
| Jindl06-22-05, 01:35 PM | Mine is working fine too... |
| King Uther06-22-05, 01:37 PM | There was something I was doing earlier where I got that message, but it wasn't character editing. |
| Zerone06-22-05, 01:51 PM | I have problems editing my sheets. Always says technical problem. Do you have the same problem? I have a problem with Saiko, but not other characters... Says a 'message' has been sent to WotC. Zerone |
| Megrim_Lord06-22-05, 02:26 PM | Cat, I can't finish Virgo's quest until you help me out, I posted the CRs in the tavern. |
| Pitlords06-22-05, 02:29 PM | Megrim, I've replied yesterday in the Quest thread. |
| Sindorin06-22-05, 03:05 PM | Oh my God, what have I started?! I just wanted a color of my own to use, and look what happens... |
| Luni06-22-05, 03:39 PM | I can't edit my character sheet either... :( Can you make Ariel as miniquest for a ghoul please Caterane. The only change would be rebuying the expenditures from the last fight... |
| Sunwolf06-22-05, 03:50 PM | I can't update Brilf either He went to level 5 -- 45hp increase +1 BAB and +10 movement only rebought equipment used in last fight. -- set him ready for ECL 5 team or monster. |
| Huan06-22-05, 04:01 PM | Oh my God, what have I started?! I just wanted a color of my own to use, and look what happens... Added it to the list (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6453239). (they are technically "characters") :D |
| Jh31606-22-05, 04:09 PM | I managed to get my character rushed and posted within 3 minutes of the deadline, but a few minutes afterwards I saw some formatting errors and edited it. Will I still be in for this week? |
| Zerone06-22-05, 04:33 PM | I managed to get my character rushed and posted within 3 minutes of the deadline, but a few minutes afterwards I saw some formatting errors and edited it. Will I still be in for this week? Send a PM to the 'Pitlords' and tell them that you wish your character to be activated. ;) Added it to the list. (they are technically "characters") :D Let's do Blue this week??? I'll start off easy... Well off: Beast Gonzo Grover Smurfs Zerone Blue Man Group (http://complex.blueman.com/videoimages/images.shtml) Blue Beetle Superman Falco Lombardi (StarFox) Bob (Reboot) Marth (Fire Emblem) Blue Pikmin Sonic the Hedgehog The Tick R2-D2 Max Rebo (http://users3.ev1.net/~rfet/swchpics/maxrebo.jpg) Nightcrawler Vivi (from One Piece and/or FFIX) Mana (Malice Mizer) Any of the National Alchemists (Full Metal Alchemist) Shiva Genie (Aladdin) Blue (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicMonsters.html#blue) And the best ever… Black Mage! http://www.geocities.com/luken55/Pics/Black_Mage_Dance.gif Not so well off: Cobra Commander Ehor (sometimes gray, you decide) Watto Jango Fett Mr. Freeze Mr. Freezemeister Mystique Anyone else? *•. | Megrim_Lord06-22-05, 04:37 PM | Megrim, I've replied yesterday in the Quest thread. wow, me = blindzor, tyvm (beats the ghost of the english language with a dead stick) questlog coming up en un momento |
| Zerone06-22-05, 06:09 PM | I have a question... Saya (Zerone) vs random monster [4 Large Monstrous Centipedes]: Is 4 CR 1 monsters an ECL 3 encounter? I would rate this as an ECL 4 encounter, but I am bad at calculating encounters. Can some one please explain it? Thanks, Zerone |

This time with 2 new team fights and many monster fights although I'm still not entirely happy with the random table as it sometimes produces monsters that just cannot win, and sometimes you have no chance. Anyway, let's see how it goes. This week's xtra credits go to Iced for his description of Desdenova's miniquest, and Cerebus for a little bonus story in the Joseph vs Zar fight. Ok, that's it for now. Cat @Jindl: You have to tell me what you wanna craft during the week. @Zoro: No complaining this week! |
| Megrim_Lord06-22-05, 06:21 PM | Uhh... Cat, Sindorin, I don't mind doing Sokai's quest, but it would've been nice if I knew ahead of time that I was doing it... |
| Pitlords06-22-05, 06:26 PM | Uhh... Cat, Sindorin, I don't mind doing Sokai's quest, but it would've been nice if I knew ahead of time that I was doing it... Pitlord Roster: Megrim Lord (21°) <one> [Request: Miniquests only] |
| Megrim_Lord06-22-05, 06:28 PM | ... I meant details, EL, objective, ideas on the plot, etc. I mean in the very least one of you could have pmed me |
| Pitlords06-22-05, 06:31 PM | No one knew until 5 min ago. It's a simple miniquest where we use Pitlords like in arena fights (infact, it's much easier than an arena fight). For more elaborate miniquests, the player normally discusses it with a Questlord but that is not the default procedure. |
| Zerone06-22-05, 06:33 PM | @Zoro: No complaining this week! No need to be that way... :P I don't exactly understand how the whole CR thing works. I was asking for an explaination. Can you help me or are you going to be a booger? :smirk: "But I wanted to go to the Toshie Station to pick up some power converters!" :weep: |
| Pitlords06-22-05, 06:40 PM | Arena Gladiators are highly optimized and more powerful than their normal real campaign counterparts. They can buy the perfectly fitting magic items, know the stats in advance, know the battleground, etc. This is normally no problem because normally gladiators fight against equal CR in form of another gladiator (unless he requests a higher level fight) so it evens out. Monsters are taken over from the MM and are not as optimized as a gladiator. Thus a lvl 3 gladiator can easily defeat a CR 3 monster. That's the reason for making it one CR higher than the gladiator (IMO the gladiators are at least CR+1 themselves). PS: It was 1d4 Centipedes so it could aswell have been only 1. Bad luck but I still think they are no problem for Saya. |
| Sindorin06-22-05, 06:59 PM | it is rather interesting that Va'ria faces Virgo this week... I thought it was supposed to be that 2 vs. 4 battle or whatever. Oh well. |
| Sunwolf06-22-05, 07:45 PM | Any chance that Brilf can get a fight of some sort this week? ECL 4-6 monster or team I was getting the same error that Cat and Luni were getting as I noted earlier in this thread. Thanks, Sunwolf |
| Huan06-22-05, 08:17 PM | Hmm... last I checked I was doing Saiko's quest (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=451768), not King Uther. :P |

I think it will be all right for you to update him now (and then send me the ok) since I will not be able to begin either of my quests until noon tomorrow (busy, busy, I'm afraid). Also... | Pitlords06-23-05, 04:05 AM | Hmm... last I checked I was doing Saiko's quest (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=451768), not King Uther. :P Ok, sorry. I got that correct on the Quest Roster but not on the Character Actions post, and that's where I look for Credit assignment. So Uther's net bonus this week drop to a lousy +9, and Huan gains 2 additional credits. |
| Caterane06-23-05, 06:32 AM | Tactics for Mer-Man, Ixenthor, and Uhmentarymster sent. |

| King Uther06-23-05, 08:58 AM | Hey now, a lousy +9? If I'm only earning 9 credits then that means I'm going to have some free time. Anyone have any chores for me to do? I'm a good cook, but terrible with laundry. Oh, and that means if a fight gets dropped I can take it, since Tuesday has 8 full hours of free time. |
| Sunwolf06-23-05, 09:14 AM | @Caterene Brilf updated char sheet sent by email. If you can post or send me stats and equipment for the yuan-ti I may be able to get you tactics today. |
| King Uther06-23-05, 09:49 AM | @ Kaigan Tactics for Virgo Arkazzan have been sent via PM. |
| Kaigan06-23-05, 09:52 AM | Received Tactics for Virgo and for Mer-man Awaiting Tactics for Va'ria Will send tactics for Rayos and for Aeiou tonight after work. |
| Zerone06-23-05, 10:23 AM | @ Huan & Pitlords: I still cannot update The False Saiko (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6086610&postcount=271). I have reposted him in a new character slot (the link found herein). You'll know the difference - the updated version is not a Specialist Wizard. Please make a note of this. Thanks, Z |
| Pittbull06-23-05, 11:19 AM | @Zerone /Luni: Tactics have been sent! Thanks for running. Saya's tactic has been received. You don't have to. Oh really? Cool! |
| Jindl06-23-05, 11:23 AM | @Pittbull/Zerone - Powerstones are like scrolls, all decisions are made when they are used. On another topic, you did understand that you cannot buff all of your arrows with dissolving weapon, for two reasons: Number 1, as I pointed out, ammunition is not a valid target for the spell (and we can discuss this more if people disagree), and Number 2, prebuffs are limited by the 1/3rd rule, which means that if Laph uses 1 dissolving weapon as a pebuff, he just spent 3 out of his 4 daily pp's. If you want to adjust and add dissolving weapon as a prebuff to your bow instead of all of your arrows, that will be fine with me. (Another reason not to prebuff all your arrows ... that first TK attack when Anna throws 15 of your own arrows at you. Laph isn't immune to acid, is he?) About this fight, I certainly don't envy Zerone for having to run this. Did you do something to get on Cat's bad side? I mean, having to run what perhaps are the two most complex characters in the CoCo. Pixie vs Ghost, and tons of spot checks and special abilities. So what I would suggest is running the fight in a seperate thread, with Zerone acting like a moderator. Pittbull and I could just go back and forth posting our actions (and using an online roller for our rolls). I trust Pittbull not to metagame with the knowledge of where Anna is, even when Laph can't spot her. And Zerone would observe and step in if Pittbull and I disagree on an issue. What do you both think? -Jindl |
| Pittbull06-23-05, 11:44 AM | @Jindl: That's really a nice idea, but I won't be available until Monday. That's why, I sent the tactics so early. Zerone can read my tactic and then decide, how we should run the fight. It might be possible on monday evening, my work is finished at 7 pm (CET) and then I'm ready to run. Just tell me what you like to do. I'll do a short visit in the boards tomorrow and then I'll know what to do. 1/3-rule aplies on all days during the week, not only on fighting days? Then less javelins are charged, OK? |

Why don't we try it monday afternoon/night? 1/3-rule aplies on all days during the week, not only on fighting days? Then less javelins are charged, OK? It isn't a per day rule. Its a flat 1/3rd for all non-permanent prebuffs. So you can only use 4 pps to prebuff (which is enough for 1 dissolving weapon), not 4 pp per day for 7 days. -Jindl |
| Salrantol06-23-05, 12:15 PM | @Salrantol - still need tacticsNot any more you don't. @Jindl & @xanadu: Tactics ideas sent to teammates. Hopefully we'll have tactics to you tonight. |

| Rim-Soulfang06-23-05, 12:54 PM | I have done the rolling for the fight(?) between Rook and 5 wights. Since it was practically target practice, do i really need to keep track of where everyone is positioned? Also, how much xp is this fight worth? |
| Pittbull06-23-05, 01:05 PM | (1)Why don't we try it monday afternoon/night? (2) It isn't a per day rule. Its a flat 1/3rd for all non-permanent prebuffs. (2) This rule aplies only for arena prebuffs, not for quest or campaingn? Honestly it doesn't really make sense to me, that you can spend only 3pp for dissolving weapon in a week. Laph's totall PPs per week are 13x7=91, (31 if you count 1/3). By the way, I think, dissolving weapon is permanent until discharged. |
| SoulLord06-23-05, 01:29 PM | quick note: my email address is wrong in the active pitlord post it should be SoulLord<insertathere>yahoo.com |

Since it was practically target practice, do i really need to keep track of where everyone is positioned? Also, how much xp is this fight worth? I believe Rook gains the normal xp/gp vs an encounter/opponent of that EL (I take it the fight was EL6?) |
| Caterane06-23-05, 02:23 PM | @Caterene Brilf updated char sheet sent by email. If you can post or send me stats and equipment for the yuan-ti I may be able to get you tactics today. Ok, the guys are posted on the Battles of Gladius thread. Muahahaha @Pittbull: Sense or not, it is a way to balance the arena. Note that you have a seperate 1/3 allotment for prebuffs which is different from the 1/3 for the arena. That means, if you prebuff with a dissolving weapon, you have 3/7 PP left for prebuffs, and all 7/7 PP for the arena fight. And I agree with Jindl that ammunition is no valid target for dissolving weapon for obvious reasons. |
| Malither7606-23-05, 02:34 PM | I would argue and say that you can only put dissolving weapon on an arrow and not the bow, no were in the description does it say that it works on a bow or that the bow makes the effect transfer to ammo, I would think you would have a bow just oozing with acid that would be discharged if you hit somone on the head with it, this is a melee power, so it makes since you could put it on an arrow which can be used as a melee weapon, but then fire it from a bow, this will probably need to be rulled on, but if it is allowed to be placed on a bow, it should be discharged on the first shot like most other types of things like this and if you miss, oh well. @Zerone and Cat, I overbuffed with dissolving weapon this week because I missunderstood the rule as well, so Zerone just treat all the dissolving weapons prebuffs as un augmented and they will fall under the 1/3 rule. :) thanks @Cerebus Guts tactics received |
| SoulLord06-23-05, 03:18 PM | Tactics for Vandelar the red & Heindal the Big sent. |
| Sindorin06-23-05, 03:22 PM | Tactics for Va'ria sent. For Sokai, I'm not sure how to write his tactics... and I am discussing tactics for Sasha and Ammenyennon with TheJiveMachine. Plenty of time for those. |
| King Uther06-23-05, 03:33 PM | Is Brilf going to be earning double gold for his monster fight? I would assume not, but since they get double standard treasure I thought I would ask. |
| Caterane06-23-05, 03:40 PM | Is Brilf going to be earning double gold for his monster fight? I would assume not, but since they get double standard treasure I thought I would ask. No, that's part of the creatures challenging rating (see MM entry: treasure). Yuan-ti have double standard, animals have none, and others might yet have different wealths. That has no effect on the rewards. Is your Campaign running? |
| King Uther06-23-05, 04:14 PM | I am getting a little more into the introduction to build hype. It starts in 13 days. I still have one slot remaining, and want to have it filled by then. Hopefully the story gets people excited about it. |
| Jindl06-23-05, 04:43 PM | (2) This rule aplies only for arena prebuffs, not for quest or campaingn? Honestly it doesn't really make sense to me, that you can spend only 3pp for dissolving weapon in a week. Laph's totall PPs per week are 13x7=91, (31 if you count 1/3). By the way, I think, dissolving weapon is permanent until discharged. Cat designed that rule, not me, so you may need to lend more weight to his explanation. Before LG brought time restrictions into play, I would have been much more open to treating "permanent until discharged" prebuffs the same as "permanent" prebuffs (in other words, they wouldn't count against your spells for the day of the fight). But that was when you had unlimited time between fights. Now that there is only 1 week between fights, I think it would be more appropriate to treat "permanent until discharged" the same as "duration 16+ hours" (meaning that they are limited to 1/3rd of your spells/pps). As for dissolving weapon, I don't think we should allow it on ammunition, because, who would spend money/xp on +1 acidic (+1d6) ammunition when they could just charge the ammunition themselves with a power that adds 4d6 to each shot. It doesn't make any sense to allow this. So I think we must enforce that dissolving weapon can only target the weapon, not the ammunition. -Jindl |
| Caterane06-23-05, 05:11 PM | Yes, we have 7 days a week but we also simulate campaigns, and there you don't have 6 days off to prebuff for the 7th day. Secondly, it's there to balance the board. Thirdly, it's unrealistic to use all your remaining 2/3 slots on prebuffs. And finally, it is necessary if we want to use stackable prebuffs, a topic we have yet to discuss (although I suggest to wait until we're higher in level so that we can see firsthand). |
| Pittbull06-23-05, 05:29 PM | No problem, I'll accept the current law. Cat told me that this is allready in the FAQ. I simply didn't read it. It's also reasonable to the state, that ammunition is not a valid target, because of the rule-breaking consequences. For our fight, treat only the bow as charged. But there is another loop-hole in the 1/3-rule for prebuffs: If a level 4 psychic warrior buys a dorje of dissolving weapon, he can charge a lot of his weapons. He just needs to pay 6000gp for the dorje and it works only 50 times. ;) Laph needs to earn some money. :P Since he is joining the campaingn soon, there other things which are more necessary. OMG, I really looking forward to the campaingn, only knowing that next week is another special event, keeps my up. OK, next week, Jindl and Laph go out to kick some evil buds!!!!! :D |
| King Uther06-23-05, 05:34 PM | I understand that treasure is worked into the challenge rating. I was just making sure there wasn't some gold-earning loophole in the system. |
| SoulLord06-23-05, 05:35 PM | Tactics for Terel Ziathin and Elyus Lexingtion received |
| King Uther06-23-05, 05:36 PM | @Pittbull You have every right to be excited about the campaign. When it's over, assuming the party has survived, I promise you will feel great about your character. You will be tested in every possible battle scenario, as well as have the chance to really RP. I think that Laph's personality will grow up some after all of the things he has seen. All I ask is that everyone involved has fun with it, because when you guys have fun, I have fun. |
| Malither7606-24-05, 01:41 PM | You guys are not reading the spell very well, Dissolving weapon is just as dissolving touch except on a weapon that discharges on a successful attack. Dissolving touch can be on your hands, claws or bite and disscharges with a successful melee touch attack, There fore dissolving weapon would discharge with a successful melee attack, not a ranged one, As a pittlord I will not alow this on a bow unless you plan on wacking your opponent with your bow, I will alow this on an arrow as an arrow can be used in melee you just found a way to launch it, although you miss and the arrow is going along with the power, And Jindl it is not useless to have the +1 bonus for acid on an arrow, as this would do damage along with the dissolving touch, that argument would be the same and say there is no reason for me to get anything like that on a sword now since I use dissolving weapon. I don't know when we started allowing this power to be put on bows but it should stop, its not covered in the spell saying that this is a leagal targed and in the RAW (as you like to say :) ) I think this only works for melee weapons. |
| cvazi06-24-05, 02:14 PM | @xanadu Sorry for the mix up- I'm new to these boards @Pittbull- Sorry for the delay, accidentally sent my tactics to Xanadu. I just sent the tactics to you. @Bgt- Here's to Brogan's first win! :pint: |

| SoulLord06-25-05, 10:31 AM | Terel vs Elyus battle ready! whats the command for the spoiler tags? |
| Beldin06-25-05, 10:33 AM | @Soullord: You cannot ready a charge. You can only ready standard actions. |
| Sunwolf06-25-05, 10:55 AM | >>whats the command for the spoiler tags? Answer: start with [ sblock ] and end with [ /sblock ] but remove the spaces |
| SoulLord06-25-05, 11:42 AM | @Soullord: You cannot ready a charge. You can only ready standard actions. from the srd If you are able to take only a standard action or a move action on your turn, you can still charge, but you are only allowed to move up to your speed (instead of up to double your speed). |
| Kaigan06-25-05, 11:49 AM | I think that rule was only meant for if you were somehow only limited to a standard action. If I could ready a charge, then Aeiou would destroy everything and anything. But I'm fairly sure you cannot, but ask Caterane. |
| Caterane06-25-05, 12:12 PM | This line is only for those who have only a standard action, and nothing else. Like a Zombie for example. |
| Rim-Soulfang06-25-05, 12:13 PM | Whats the ECL of 5 wights? According to the encounter calculator linked in the characters thread it's 8, is that correct? |
| Caterane06-25-05, 12:16 PM | Calculate the CR individually, then add them together. Wights don't have an ECL but you don't need it anyawy |

| Kaigan06-25-05, 09:37 PM | @Soullord: Superdank is correct. There is no potion of invisibility listed on Teral's character sheet. So he could not have used one. |
| King Uther06-25-05, 11:50 PM | @ Caterane He said he had the credits necessary. If not, then I'll pay them and he'll pay me back. I sent a PM to the Pitlords account about it. |
| SoulLord06-26-05, 01:14 AM | In general are you required to have all of your equipment on your character sheet? Regarding Terel's potion of Invisibility. http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6530026&postcount=43 aaaaa how could I have missed that... I'll adjust the fight accordingly. as for the ready action partial charge As the RAW a character could be slowed as per the spell and thus have only a partial action and he could ready a partial charge. now a non slowed character can't? I'll run the fight again but I disagree on wheter you could ready a partial charge or not. |
| Jindl06-26-05, 01:29 AM | as for the ready action partial charge As the RAW a character could be slowed as per the spell and thus have only a partial action and he could ready a partial charge. now a non slowed character can't? I'll run the fight again but I disagree on wheter you could ready a partial charge or not. The keyword is limited to only a standard action. A non-slowed character is not limited, he can take a full round action. Also, if you could ready a charge, then you could use your move action to approach a target, then ready a charge (which would take you in a different direction than your move), with the effect of being able to turn in any direction during the midpoint of your charge. That's just one abuse of that interpretation... -Jindl |
| SoulLord06-26-05, 01:55 AM | Terel Ziathin (Rim-Soulfang) vs Elyus Lexingtion (Superdank): Re-done. Jindl. True but by the raw zombies then can ready a charge when faster characters can't, which doesn't seem logical. But if that is the will of the council so be it no ready partial charges. next time they will just ready an action to move next to their opponents. |

| Caterane06-26-05, 04:57 AM | @Xanadun and Luni: (and all others) If you use more than one post for a fight, please link them to each other. The player will only link the post with the result so the sheets might get lost. Thanks. |
| Salrantol06-26-05, 09:12 AM | @xanadu: I hate to tell you, but there is a DC16 Fortitude save for half damage on my Energy Missile (cold). It's not a jacked-up magic missile. No need to rerun though. ;) |

| Cerebus1306-26-05, 11:02 AM | Greevus vs Hagrid is done. Setup Here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6535961&postcount=49) Fight Here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6535971&postcount=50) Mistakes: Probably many. Silly 50000 character limit. In Round 15 of the battle Hagrid should have dealt damage to Greevus for starting the grapple...so a 1d4+2d6+STR. (unarmed strike + extra spike damage + STR) Greevus' grapple check is -1 overall, Aid doesn't help him there unfortunately. Greevus' Escape Artist check is +3 from his dex. In Round 16 (and subsequent rounds) why wasn't Hagrid simply using opposed grapple checks to deal damage? From this (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/armor.htm#armorSpikes) entry in the SRD it says that armor spikes "deal extra damage in grapple attacks" so he could be making opposed checks to try and deal 1d4+2d6+5 damage. He would miss out on critical hits (I think) but he would hit a LOT more often. However there is still a small ray of hope for Greevus as his Round 16 escape attempt would succeed using his normal +3 escape artist check instead of +2. So I hate to make you rerun such a complicated battle but from Rnd 16 and on should probably be examined again. |
| Purkake06-26-05, 11:30 AM | I think somewhere like in the FAQ it is said that armor spikes do damage automatically in grapple with a succesful grapple check. So Greevus would have been impaled a lot earlier, but fun fight non the less. |

However he escaped a lot earlier than was listed so that may keep the outcome the same. |

| Luni06-26-05, 12:08 PM | In Round 15 of the battle Hagrid should have dealt damage to Greevus for starting the grapple...so a 1d4+2d6+STR. Well, I wish they had mentioned armor spikes under the grappling rules!!!!!!! Ok. It's no problem. I blame WoTC. As for aid, they keep saying a grapple check is like a melee attack roll, so I couldn't see why Aid (and shaken) applies to everything but grapple checks. I'll take them out though. However there is still a small ray of hope for Greevus as his Round 16 escape attempt would succeed using his normal +3 escape artist check instead of +2. Actually, it doesn't since I have to remove the -2 for Shaken on Hagrid too. :( |
| Salzorin06-26-05, 12:46 PM | Shaken would still apply I believe... Aid doesn't apply to Escape Artist because EA is a skill check and Aid gives no bonuses to a skill check. However, the Shaken should still effect Hagrid's grapple rolls... |
| Luni06-26-05, 12:47 PM | Fight is fixed, and now it is Hagrid that wins! Sorry about those mistakes Cerebus and Pitbull. |
| Salzorin06-26-05, 12:54 PM | From the SRD to confirm what I said Repeatedly in a grapple, you need to make opposed grapple checks against an opponent. A grapple check is like a melee attack roll. Your attack bonus on a grapple check is: Base attack bonus + Strength modifier + special size modifier and A shaken character takes a -2 penalty on attack rolls |
| Luni06-26-05, 01:00 PM | Bah! Next version coming after lunch. Call it V1.02 As a side note, the stupid boards won't let me edit Ariel. |
| Cerebus1306-26-05, 01:20 PM | @Luni Thanks for being patient and taking the time to revise the fight for us. About Aid, shaken and grapple checks... I interpreted it the same way as Salzorin in that Escape Artist is a skill check, thus no Aid bonus applies. Grapple checks in themselves are listed as being "like" melee attack rolls so if I hadn't have used Reduce Person I would have been better opposing with Grapple checks because I would get the +1 from Aid. In hindsight I need to come up with a better strategy against grapplers besides reducing their touch attack. |
| Kaigan06-26-05, 05:03 PM | Is anyone else having problems editing posts and characters? I still can't edit Rayos. |
| Caterane06-26-05, 05:36 PM | I have dispatched (a second) mail - this time with emergency written in the headline - to the WizO's. I hope this problem doesn't persist because we might get a problem with next pairings if no one can update his sheet. Let's try to find out who can't edit his sheet. So far we have: Caterane, Kaigan, Zerone, LLMadCow, Luni, Sindorin, Sunwolf, Pittbull, Cerebus, anyone else? |
| Sindorin06-26-05, 06:51 PM | I tried to update Sasha with her latest loss, but was unable to do so and received the same message that has been spoken of. |
| Sunwolf06-26-05, 08:35 PM | @Cat Comments on the Brilf vs Yuan-ti match. Did both Yuan-ti start in the box A? If so, I don't see how Ssenys can shoot Brilf in round 1. If Ssenys started in box C that make sense. However, Brilf has deflect arrows so the sleep arrow should not have hit. In round 9 4+17 =21 < 36-10 so why did Brilf pass out? Was the 17 after the -10 for the resist acid? Even with 25 hitpoints(if both of the above were errors), once grappled I think brilf only lasts another 2 rounds at most. So no need to rerun. I was hoping I might actually damage one of them though. Sigh. :P Well on to next week. |
| Sunwolf06-26-05, 08:38 PM | Still can't edit Brilf. -- same error as before. Has a set of pages on that thread gotten corrupted? |
| Caterane06-26-05, 08:44 PM | Right deflect arrows. Always forget about that. But honestly, I don't think these extra hp help much. Problem is that you cannot escape with your much slower speed (20 vs 60) and the Yuan-ti cannot fail to hear you. That might be an idea with the thread. Can threads corrupt? I can still edit with the Pitlords account. Let's see what the WizO's say. |
| xanadu06-26-05, 10:49 PM | Hmm, I have no problem editing my characters. SOmetimes the boards act funny, but I have been able to edit stuff successfully. |
| Kaigan06-27-05, 01:27 AM | Watch the master teach the apprentice the valuable lessons of deception, and the apprentice teach the master some new tricks in Virgo vs. Va'ria Enjoy! |
| Caterane06-27-05, 03:30 AM | @Zerone: It's a bit late for a seperate thread fight now, isn't it? That thread should've been up on wednesday. Well, without being able to edit our sheets we can't roll pairings anyway so you might have an additional week. Please include the character sheets. Links won't do as the sheets will change drastically over time. @Kaigan: Pfft woman :D Nice story |
| Luni06-27-05, 04:07 AM | Wheee. After my really long lunch break, V3 of the fight is up! Greevus is the winner once again. |
| Caterane06-27-05, 07:09 AM | @Luni: That was good work with a long and complicated fight. Additionally you have used a nice layout and used the online roller. Since you have run that long fight 3 times, I'll give you a credit for your extra work. |
| Pittbull06-27-05, 08:08 AM | @Luni: Yes, you earn that!! Thanks for running the fight!!!! |
| Jindl06-27-05, 09:01 AM | @Zerone: It's a bit late for a seperate thread fight now, isn't it? That thread should've been up on wednesday. The delay was per Pittbull and I (doesn't anybody read the posts of this thread?_ :)) Since we weren't going to be able to play out the fight til today, Zerone didn't need to start the thread much earlier. -Jindl |
| Meek Head06-27-05, 09:07 AM | I am unable to update Mugen. I get a strange message asking me to refresh my browser and try again. |

His tattoos of force screen should be 100gp each. Turn undead falls under the 1/3 rule so he can only use divine might 2x His encumbrance totals are light <37.5/38/76 He is carrying 10lbs std leather 10lbs alchemist fire 12lbs tanglefoot bags 2lbs short bow 5lbs thunder stones 6lbs == 40 arrows 1 lbs cloak --- 46 lbs So he is at med encumbrance giving him a move of 15ft and -3 armor check penalty which does apply to hide, tumble, move silently I expect him to snipe me to death, potentially also shattering my bow. I would like boost my AC as best I can and try to blind him, then shoot him with arrows or attack her with greatsword if in melee. Closing to melee is my preference but shoot as I close. Notes: Dont for get my lay on hands healing. Share all spells I cast with Rascal. Rascal gets spot and listen checks too. He has scent also he can use that to locate Sinnoch if we are close enough. All my spells except some cantrips do not suffer ASF. Scrolls of True strike or blindness/deafness don't have S components so only require 1 free hand(holding the scroll). If he shoots at Rascal, Rascal gets a +4 cover bonus for being in my hex. Telveran threatens with his armor spikes even if his hands are full. Rascal will spend his actions listening and looking for Sinnoch (from under the hood of my cloak of course) and indicate direction to me. Rascal gets bonuses to fear saves from bless and also aura of courage from Telveran. Of course Telveran is immune to fear. If I fail casting from a scroll and make the following dc5 wisdom save, I can try again because the scroll hasn't been used up. Telveran Trog form -- changes to sheet: +6 nat armor, multiattack, +4 hide check, 1d4+3 claws, 1d4+3 bite -- full attack +7 melee and +4 bite (1d4+3) Leave Nimblefoot at home. Bring Rascal with me. Enter with scroll stilled alter self in hand and in the default spot. Win or lose init: Cast alter self into trogdolyte. Share spells with Rascal making him look more ferocious (steel grey and black coloring) but still a weasel. Move to cover. Drop to knee for +2 to AC vs ranged (free action). Rascal will delay or refocus so his turn is just before mine. Draw and cast scroll of owls wisdom -- +2 bonus to will saves and spot and listen checks for both of us. Draw and cast scroll resist energy -- choose fire. Cast bless for +1 to hit for 2 min. Draw wand of shield. Use wand of shield. Stow wand. Stand. Draw bow and move towards central pillar to look for him or in direction of his arrow shots. If I haven't found him by this point move in a counterclockwise fashion looking for him. On following rounds: Once I notice him shooting at me and I have my buffs up, draw and drink potion of SOF. Draw scroll of blindness. If I or Rascal spot him and aren't silenced, move closer and ready to cast blindness on him when he pops up to snipe. If he fails his save, accept his surrender if he choses. If he didn't surrender and failed his save just close on him (don't need skate tattoo) and attack him with greatsword. Tap a tattoo of skate and move up and base him. With skate I should be moving 35 to his 15. At this point stow bow and draw greatsword. After basing him, cast truestrike and powerattack for -4/+8 on next attack. I can try this twice. Use both tattoos of skate if I have too. Interrupts: Use lay on hands healing if I have taken more than 12 points of damage. Use CLW wand after lay on hands if I fall below 17 hp if not engaged. Move to cover when healing if possible (drop to knee if not). Do not drop bow or wand, stow them. if blinded use tattoo of synesthete. If entangled with tangle foot bag and I fail my save, slash away at it with claw and bite till it is gone if I am holding my bow. If holding greatsword use that and bite to get rid of it -- powerattack -4/+8 when slashing at goo with greatsword. If he shatters my bow, search for him using greatsword. If he silences me, use spot checks to figure out where he is, tapping tattoo does not require sound. use force screen tattoos in this case if shield drops If shield is about to run out, pull wand activate and stow wand. Do not drop the wand. Use cover (break LOS) if possible while doing this. Drop to knee if I can't get to cover. If my tactics break down, use resources if they give me a good chance to win. Fight Results: 1. Sinnoch hunts the elusive Damon Tharkis Fail +500xp/533gp (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6375527&postcount=1607) Tactics I'm not taking any thunderstones, as well as any amount of equipment I don't need to not be encumbered. And, since I did not outline it in my tactics, use scroll of snctuary and CLW if need be. Use your own judgment. These are Sinnoch Woldstorm's tactics: RP wise, Sinnoch respects those who can follow the narrow path, as he cannot do so himself. Clearly this is a battle of wits. I cannot defeat him in melee or speed, but he can't even see me to begin with. So, here's the plan: 1. Tattoo of chameleon, hide -always make sure to hide whenever possible. He cannot roll high enough to see me. Even sniping he has great difficulty. 2. Tattoo of Force Screen 3. Scroll of Protection From Good 4. If I can spot him from a distance while hiding, even during buffs, try to get lucky with the blindness spell. There is a 20% chance of success, but the effect is worth it. 5. Use my Scroll of Spiritual Weapon, having it assault the horse while I snipe the horse. I need his mobility to be decreased. - Deny him the charge whenever possible. If I find myself where I cannot, ready the shatter spell on his lance when he does charge. - If things start to look bad for me, use Scroll of Summon Mon IV to summon 1d3 Celestial Black bears to maul him. - Don't forget about the tanglefoot bags, if forced into melee use one followed by an alchemists fire. - The ideal situation is his mount dies, then I snipe until the battle ends. But...he has a wand of CLW so if he keeps using it I'll need to summon the bears to keep his HP down. - Use Obscuring mist to retreat if I have to. The Fight! Unfortunatly, the internet is being figity over here, and I can't get to a online dice roller. Therefore, I'll be using my own dice. Initiative: Telveran: 6 (6+0) Sinnoch: 16 (13+3) Teveran starts at (0/-26). Sinnoch starts at (26/0) Round 1 Telveran casts Alter Self off of a scroll, assuming the form of a troglodyte. He then moves towards cover and drops to his knee. Sinnoch has left his thunderstones, 5 alchemist's fires, and a few tanglefoot bags at home, so he's not encumbered. He taps his tattoo of chemeleon and goes to hide. Telveran: (3/-23), 44/44 Scamp: (with T), 22/22 Sinnoch: (23/-3) 24/24 Round 2-4 The contestants buff. | King Uther06-27-05, 11:38 AM | Well, looks like the fight will be delayed another week unless someone else finds the heart to finish it. There are four issues with it though. The first is that my tattoo of chameleon wasn't activated. The second is my strategy of hiding constantly. I wasn't listed as hiding until Telveran was in distance to have his familiar get an unwarranted AoO. Third, as listed in the previous FotW thread, the familiar cannot get an AoO, as it does not threaten any squares. And fourth, he is wearing full plate armor, thus spell failure chance should apply on the alter self. |
| King Uther06-27-05, 11:41 AM | His AC would be 23 also, for the Dex loss. Wouldn't affect anything. yet. |
| xanadu06-27-05, 12:08 PM | I'll finish the fight. |

Alter self scroll is Stilled so no ASF -- there should be a caster level check though. Please check the durations on spells as bgt does not have them all listed correctly nor does he have the alter self buff or chamelon buff listed. Hide and spot and listen checks should be listed. Honestly you may want to continue the fight from round 4. Thanks for picking up the fight. Sunwolf |

The fight was long, but both Pitbull and Cerebus deserve to have it as close to perfect as possible! If you run any future matches with my characters (or any characters with long backgrounds) that have backgrounds/appearance go ahead and "Quote" the entire character post and edit out stuff that is just fluff. I wrote a more involved background for Greevus because of the campaign he is entering into...so that's a lot of words that can be editted out for when he does arena fights. Again, thanks for running the fight. |

| Malither7606-27-05, 10:58 PM | @Zerone, good fight, only concern is the disspell magic would target the fly spell and all dissolving weapon buffs, and I have all 3 as I noted to you and Cat to not pay attention to the augmented ones listed as I was unaware of the 1/3 rule at the time so these should be targeted to and maybie first since they are at a higher caster level or it should be at least random to roll for the dispells which leaves a slight possibility the flight may not get dispelled and the DC for that is 16, its 11 plus caster level flight is minimum 5th lev. DC 17 for my dissolving weapons, and improved invis last 1 round a level, which doesn't much matter since it didn't get to round 21, but take a look at this please thanks. |

| Caterane06-28-05, 08:14 AM | @Zerone: there are some mistakes in the fight. Please keep them in mind for future pitlording: Round 3-12 Uhmen: Flies away. Gareth: Listens (20+6-10=16 vs. DC -5, Pinpoint) and flies towards sound, being 45’ below Uhmen. Listen is an opposed check. I don't know how you got Dc -5 but that's definately not my move silently check (1d20+2-5). You copy and pasted this quote from Round 3 to Round 12. Please read the FAQ: Skills. Round 13-20 Uhmen: Forced to take an action this turn or be disqualified, gets and casts... Asides from the fact that there was surely no need to flee for 10 rounds because Gareth couldn't pinpoint me each round, the 10-round rule resets once I take an action. Please read the FAQ: Arena Combat II. The fight should have been over in a few rounds: dispel fly, hideous laughter, then kill him, instead of that 20 round chase. Then, please put tactics and sheets in spoilerblocks. |
| michael_noah06-28-05, 08:55 AM | Gareth Irontower vs. Uhmentarymster the Old (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6551104&postcount=58) is up... An attacker must be able to see the images to be fooled. If you are invisible or an attacker shuts his or her eyes, the spell has no effect. (Being unable to see carries the same penalties as being blinded.) This is a problem. Gareth should have hit with his attack, and by his tactics, used a bunch of stuff to try to kill the guy. Edit: though Cat's concerns seem valid. |

NOTE: I could not access the Ally calculator to adjust the rewards. I'm not sure if it matters, but only damage from talons and claws is doubled on a dive. A creature that flies can make dive attacks. A dive attack works just like a charge, but the diving creature must move a minimum of 30 feet and descend at least 10 feet. It can make only claw or talon attacks, but these deal double damage. |
| King Uther06-28-05, 09:45 AM | While Mer-Man had good tactics in case the situation arose, it seems to me that a genie would use its plethora of spell-like abilities, especially since on a ranged touch it can deliver 3 scorching rays for 12d6 damage at 55 feet. Not to mention he can polymorph himself into something more formidable should he wish to melee, and being an outsider gives him access to some good forms, such as the Ghaele Eladrin, with it's slightly better stats and 150 feet flying at maneuverability perfect. It's not that think the fight should be changed, I jst feel that a genie is not so dumb as to charge in and remain in melee despite some failure. Particularly since it can turn invisible and summon a wall of fire to retreat if necessary. |
| Huan06-28-05, 10:11 AM | @michael noah Thanks for the clarification (I could not find it in the SRD)... but regardless the triple dmg was enough... @Caterane *Cough* Yeah, That's what I get for doing the fight late at night (Sorry Kaigan) :embarrass |
| Zerone06-28-05, 10:12 AM | @ Gareth vs. Uhmen: This is a problem. Gareth should have hit with his attack, and by his tactics, used a bunch of stuff to try to kill the guy. Edit: though Cat's concerns seem valid. True on both counts. Thanks! See below... :) Listen is an opposed check. I don't know how you got Dc -5 but that's definately not my move silently check (1d20+2-5). Uhmen's MS should have been -3, not -5 (0 Base, +2 MS, -5 moving faster than normal). This does lead to Gareth not pinpionting as much, but it was some wicked die rolling... This would lead to Uhmen casting his Dispell Magic several rounds earlier, and Gareth would not have received his first attack. Noted mentally and in the Fight Notes at the end of the thread, before character sheets, and herein... please put tactics and sheets in spoilerblocks. Done. @Zerone, good fight, only concern is the disspell magic would target the fly spell and all dissolving weapon buffs, and I have all 3 as I noted to you and Cat to not pay attention to the augmented ones listed as I was unaware of the 1/3 rule at the time so these should be targeted to and maybie first since they are at a higher caster level or it should be at least random to roll for the dispells which leaves a slight possibility the flight may not get dispelled and the DC for that is 16, its 11 plus caster level flight is minimum 5th lev. Several minor mistakes, but I learned from them. I rolled 3 more Dispell checks, 2 passing and 1 failing, random rolled for the 1 failure, and it ended up on one of the Dissolving Weapons. It is noted in red at the end of the fight. Thanks to all for pointing out my mistakes... :P Your helping me learn the rules! :D *•. Z |

| Jindl06-28-05, 10:29 AM | @michael_noah - The ex-sage strikes again. Skip put an update in the Rules of the Game on the wizards website where he said that any slashing or piercing melee weapon also deals double damage on a dive. That can make a diving spirited charge with a lance a x4 event, without critting. -Jindl |
| SoulLord06-28-05, 10:46 AM | I'll do the LLMadCow now: YOU CANNOT READY A CHARGE BECAUSE IT IS A FULLROUNDACTION!!!! I think that's the oldest mistake in CoCo history It can also be a standard action with some limitations, straight from the srd Movement During a Charge You must move before your attack, not after. You must move at least 10 feet (2 squares) and may move up to double your speed directly toward the designated opponent. You must have a clear path toward the opponent, and nothing can hinder your movement (such as difficult terrain or obstacles). Here’s what it means to have a clear path. First, you must move to the closest space from which you can attack the opponent. (If this space is occupied or otherwise blocked, you can’t charge.) Second, if any line from your starting space to the ending space passes through a square that blocks movement, slows movement, or contains a creature (even an ally), you can’t charge. (Helpless creatures don’t stop a charge.) If you don’t have line of sight to the opponent at the start of your turn, you can’t charge that opponent. You can’t take a 5-foot step in the same round as a charge. If you are able to take only a standard action or a move action on your turn, you can still charge, but you are only allowed to move up to your speed (instead of up to double your speed). You can’t use this option unless you are restricted to taking only a standard action or move action on your turn. |
| Zerone06-28-05, 10:51 AM | Again, my move silently is neither DC-5 nor DC-3, it is DC 1d20-3. Whoops... :looloo: :lightbulb It happens. Sometimes I amaze even myself... *•. Z @ SoulLord: Already covered a page or two back... ;) |

| King Uther06-28-05, 11:30 AM | @ xanadu Did you use an online roller? Bear 3 is listed as flanking on its original round, meaning realistically at least 2 of the bears were flanking. Which means at least 1 more hit, and possibly a critical, but I don't know what the confirm rolls were. And after the bears attack his AC mysteriously rises by 2. |

King: I always had 2 of the bears flanking. His AC rises by 2 because the goo from the tanglefoot bag dried up into uselessness. |
| King Uther06-28-05, 11:38 AM | I didn't mean to say they weren't flanking, but that I could not tell whether or not it was taken into account. |

| King Uther06-28-05, 11:48 AM | Although it didn't explicitly state it, I did wish to avoid melee, hence the use of tanglefoot bags. When the bears were summoned, Sinnoch would have gained some distance, meaning that Telveran would have had a significantly more difficult time locating me. I honestly didn't think the fight would come down to me staying within his familiar's scent range, because the original plan was to stay as far away as possible and snipe. But...I digress. Sunwolf had a good strategy, and I appreciate you picking it up for us. |
| xanadu06-28-05, 11:55 AM | I didn't mean to say they weren't flanking, but that I could not tell whether or not it was taken into account. I do not use an online roller because my internet connection is flighty and unpredictable. I do write down all the rolls in case I have to go back (which is quite often actually). All of the modifiers, whether it was from the goo on Televeren or from the bears flanking are included on the rolls listed. Your concerns are legitimate so no worries. I put some comments in to make these modifiers clearer. In fact, I would encourage looking into that fight because I really didn't have a good feel for each gladiator or what they were trying to do since I essentially picked it up mid fight. I tried to take into account tactics/wishes, but sometimes I had to revert back to what actually happened in the old version. |

Sunwolf had a good strategy, and I appreciate you picking it up for us. I know what you mean here, but it can be hard to execute. One can withdraw far away and hide, but the enemy will know which direction you went to get in the general vicinity - with a 60 feet scent diameter it really isn't that difficult. Towards the end, I did have Sinnoch withdraw a significant distance. However, Televern was able to wonder into the general area and got lucky with a hide/spot check. |

| Tellish_of_Ket06-28-05, 12:39 PM | Me again. Not trying to be ignorant, but is this how it's done? Mer-man wins and gains 3150 xp, 3400 gp You get the gp reward as if you defeated a gladiator of that level? Normally you roll once on coins, then on goods, and then items. avg rolls: 6d4x100 gp, 1d8 gems (avg value 100gp ea.), 1d4 minor magic itmes (extremely good odds is a couple of potions and/or a couple of scrolls). Lets use again, avg rolls: 12x100gp=1200 gp 4x100gems=400 gp 1 potion of bulls str = 300 gp 1 scroll of fog cloud = 150gp Total treasure value: 2050 I mean the free xp is bad enough, but why the extra coin? Just curious...is it cuz it's simpler than rolling on the treasure table, a time saver? Just curious and wanna know. Heck, if that's the case, i'm gonna go build me a puny little old flyer buy 100,000 arrows and just hunt Collossal Scorpions all my life until i hit 20th...which should only take a month or two at the most. Man, i'll be rich too...WOOT! ToK |
| Jindl06-28-05, 12:44 PM | Yes, you gain a flat amount of gold based upon your opponents CR for arena fights. If a monster was faced in a quest or campaign, you would determine treasure normally (within the limits dictated by the EL of the quest/campaign). You don't get to pick which creature you face, so sometimes you will get your arse handed to you. More than sometimes if the pitlord uses good tactics. (cough, efreeti, cough). -Jindl |
| Tellish_of_Ket06-28-05, 12:50 PM | Thanks for the answer Jindl. I thought it was an outdoor encounter or something. *cough, quickened scorching ray+scorching ray...frewall, invis, fly, quickened scorching ray+scorching ray....cough** cough** ToK |

| Jh31606-28-05, 01:27 PM | Er, just a quick questin, DA. The fight went well and all, but why didn't you grapple when her HP got low instead of attacking with the axe again? Just lucky the AoO hit or else it probably would've turned into a chase around the arena for a little while. |

We're still working out the details. At the moment, Pittbull needs to roll a 50% chance to see if his arrow affects Anna, since she is incorporeal. Even if it does, it will deal 2 hps less damage (from the str drain on the AoO), and she will survive thanks to the +5 hps she gained on the AoO. What a close fight! -Jindl |
| Malither7606-28-05, 01:46 PM | @Zerone, the only other concern I have is you didn't have me try to base when I did pinpoint, rules of the game all about movement lets you perform full runs when flying no matter if its a spell or not which gives me a move of 180 a round at good manuverability, I did ask to run at him but you stated this was not allowed but it is, could you please adjust the fight taking this into account, I'm not sure what round U cast the dispell on and I know it will resolve no problem but I may have gotten that attack off after all and killed him in one swing, please take a look. |
| King Uther06-28-05, 04:30 PM | @ xanadu Telveran's AC prior to bear attacks, 10+6NA +8 fullplate +4 shield -1 Dex -2 Entanglement= 25, meaning at least 1 more hit. In addition, his AC would be 21 from round 15, or 23 based on when you take off entanglement, meaning a possible 2 more hits, let alone the unlisted critical confirms. |
| Caterane06-28-05, 05:04 PM | @Malither: The problem is that you never pinpointed me. Zerone made a big mistake with my move silently rolls. Infact he didn't roll add all but set the DC to -5. |
| Zerone06-28-05, 05:21 PM | @Zerone, the only other concern I have is you didn't have me try to base when I did pinpoint, rules of the game all about movement lets you perform full runs when flying no matter if its a spell or not which gives me a move of 180 a round at good manuverability, I did ask to run at him but you stated this was not allowed but it is, could you please adjust the fight taking this into account, I'm not sure what round U cast the dispell on and I know it will resolve no problem but I may have gotten that attack off after all and killed him in one swing, please take a look. In the Spell Description of Fly, it specifically states that one cannot ‘Run’ while under its affects. Therefore, Cat, nor you, did Run. If you can run than so can Cat, and it’s still the same difference – 120 vs. 120 or 240 vs. 240 = you end up 45’z to short, as he is at 50’z and you are at 5’z. So, pinpoint or not, you need better movement that Cat to catch and base him, which you do not have. However… Your Fly is 60’, 120’ double move, why did you state it is 180? Also, what Cat said in the previous post... I should have rolled for Cat's Move Silently, for a DC: 1d20-3, vs your Spot 1d20+6-range, which I did not... The way it is written now it is a little confusing, if you wish, I'll go back in an edit all the rounds... It's up to you. |
| Sunwolf06-28-05, 05:27 PM | @xanadu, King Uther Lets parse this bear attack sequence: Telveran goes ahead of the bears in init sequence Telverans AC is 10+6nat+8plate+4shield -2(from -4dex entangle)=26 Rounds 13-18 Two bears will always flank. Sinnoch is firing into melee. Telveren still has goo on him which gives -2 on attack rolls and -4 dex (effective -2 AC). All rolls listed have these efffective modifiers accounted for. Telveren attacks the bears (sword: 13, damage 10, bite: 19, damage 5) (sword: 12 miss, bite: 12 miss) (sword: 20! 18 crit, damage: 17 bear #1 poofs out, bite 10 miss) (sword: 23, damage: 10, bite 14, damage: 5) (sword: 18, damage: 13 bear #2 poofs out, bite: 11 miss) (sword: 12 miss, bite: 20! confirmed, damage: 11) Sinnoch snipes (13, 23, 21, 20, 13, 20 all miss) (hide: 9+34-20=23 vs spot: impossible) Bears attack (rolls: 6, 8, 25, 18, 21, 21, 17, 14, 1!, 15, 20! Not confirmed, 16, 13, 18, 8, 21, 15, 18 -- 1 hit for 8 round 15 T: (sword: 20! 18 crit, damage: 17 bear #1 poofs out, bite 10 miss) B:10, 16, 13, 20! Not confirmed, 20, 19 -- 1 hit for 7 round 16 Telverans AC 22 now T: (sword: 23, damage: 10, bite 14, damage: 5) B:26, 18, 15, 15, 9, 16, - 1 hit for 7 round 17 T: (sword: 18, damage: 13 bear #2 poofs out, bite: 11 miss) -- no flanks now B:16, 16, 20! Not confirmed, - 1 hit for 8 round 18 -- Tanglefoot bag effect disappears before Sinnoch and bears go T: (sword: 12 miss, bite: 20! confirmed, damage: 11) Telverans AC is 24 B:22, 18, 13 bear poofs after attacks -- no hits Even if the bears had hit Telveran an extra time in round 18, Sinnoch never did more damage to Telveran in the remainder of the fight. |
| xanadu06-28-05, 05:34 PM | @ xanadu Telveran's AC prior to bear attacks, 10+6NA +8 fullplate +4 shield -1 Dex -2 Entanglement= 25, meaning at least 1 more hit. Where does he lose -1 dex? Entanglement doesn't lower AC correct? It just lowers dexterity which has the side effect of lowering AC? So his AC ia 10 + 6 natural +8 fullplate + 4 shield -2 dex = 26. Am I wrong? In addition, his AC would be 21 from round 15, or 23 based on when you take off entanglement, meaning a possible 2 more hits, let alone the unlisted critical confirms.[ Yes, you are right here. But his AC would be 22 (I think see above). I listed the bear sequence clearer to obviate further questions. The bears did confirm a critical and got another hit. The bear squence I thought was awkward because if I were Telveren I personally would have tried to evade the creatures with his AC 26 using withdraw actions and reactivate shield or drink sof when it expired but because he was fighting them when the original pitlord left off the fight I felt obligated to have him fight. In the end I dont think it mattered becuase his HP, AC, and curative resources were too high. |
| Pitlords06-28-05, 05:35 PM | Arena fights also need some kind of Arenalog, just like Quests do. This is to see the fight summary by following the link. Please Zerone and King Uther correct that. I know it's not in the FAQ yet. Zerone, you also need to write xp and gp into that log. |

| King Uther06-29-05, 12:59 AM | @xanadu Troglodytes have a -1 dex modifier, which does add one extra hit with the 25 on round 13. That probably kills him. |

| King Uther06-29-05, 08:55 AM | For some reason I thought he was using polymorph. But realistically that makes no sense, as I'm sure he could come up with a better form. Well, so much for that one. |
| Sunwolf06-29-05, 09:44 AM | Not too many 5HD forms are that good to polymorph into, unfortunately, unless you are already an outsider. Some much nicer forms start appearing at 6-7HD though. Trog form is excellent for alter self though. :) |
| King Uther06-29-05, 10:10 AM | As I was editing my sheet, I remembered that there were errors as the battle started. Essentially, my AC and Attack were 1 lower than they were supposed to be. This makes one impact on the fight. When his AC dropped to 22, Sinnoch rolled a 21 which should have been a 22. |
| Tellish_of_Ket06-29-05, 10:15 AM | The CDG that guts also attempts should draw an AoO from all the undead around him. It's (theorically) possible that the horde drop him (and kill him) before their master bleeds out. Scenario: Guts attempts CDG, but gets dropped to -1. Priest goes to -9 Undead stomp Guts's guts below -10 (pretty much automatic) Now, i know the likelyhood is really bleak, but nonetheless it could happen. ToK |

However Guts could simply attack Desdenova instead and avoid the AoOs. Guts' attack bonus with Greatsword is +6, so if he rolls anything but a 1 he will hit her and deal 4d6+7 damage and kill her. |

| King Uther06-29-05, 10:39 AM | Another issue, and this one sucks to correct(in theory), is that Sinnoch won initiative. That means he goes first in every round, not second. That means both bear 1 and 2 get extra attacks in the rounds they got killed, but it also means Sinnoch would not hit because he went before the shield spell wore off. |
| SoulLord06-29-05, 10:44 AM | Just a doubt what are the plans for the fight? Talari (Luni) & Enoch (Salrantol) vs Zar (Rim-Soulfang) & Heindal (SoulLord): Jindl |
| Cerebus1306-29-05, 11:09 AM | Also in round 8, why does Skeleton #3 get -and zombie get -4 to hit?The last rounds were: Round 7 G: goes in for the attack, and the readied actions happen, Ray 18+=hit, -3 to strength, SK1 2+=miss, SK2 14+1= hit dam=2, Sk3 16+1=hit dam=4, Zom 5+=miss, Guts goes in for the kill expanding his focus on the Attack 13+25-1=Hit Damage is 4d6+4+4d6acid+2d6psi weapon =37 G: (-6,-21) 17/23 Dissolving Weapon(discharge), expansion (long), expeditious retreat (33), True Strike, enfeeblement (16) D: (0, -30) -8/29 Alter Self (30 min) Pro Chaos (22), Longstrider (43), Owls Wisome ( long) SK1 (-1,-29) 6/6, Sk2 (0,-29) 6/6 SK3 (1,-29) 6/6 Zom (2,-29) 16/16 Round 8 D: stabilize roll =08, stabilizes, Undead continue to attack SK1 13+1 hit dam 5, Guts AoA 7+5-1=miss, Sk2 3+=miss, Sk3 10+1-4=miss, Zom 12-4=miss G: Attacks CDG D's body Guts' location hasn't been updated in the final round (he is still listed as being at -6,-21) but it would be logical for him to approach from the west side at say...(-2,-30). The -4 to attack would come from shooting an arrow at an opponent engaged in melee with a friendly target (Guts & Sk1 are threatening each other). So a summary of what happened: Round 7 - Guts moves over to smack D. Readied actions trigger all around Sk1 & 2 & 3 shoot, Zombie charges, and D casts enfeeblement when they see him. Initiative resets, all undead go before Guts. Round 8 - Sk1 shoots at Guts provoking an AoO from him (cuz they are adjacent), Sk2 and Sk3 fire as well. Zombie charges Guts again and would hit (12+4+2 vs AC 13). So to fix the last round the Zombie would have hit Guts and thus damage of 1d10+6 needs to be rolled against his 12 remaining HPs. A 7+ is needed to knock him unconscious...so 40% odds that I lose (I think). Malither could you roll a d10 and tell us if we need to change the fight result? I need to have Guts editted and ready for today's pairings and I already assumed that he had won the fight. Edit: I forgot about the adjusted fight rewards... The equation is (CA/max-CA) * 25. CA is the Coefficient of Allies number that cellardweller came up with, and max-CA is the maximum CA for your ECL. So our equation is: (1.5/2) * 25 = 18.75%. Guts wins/Des loses = 1425xp/gp | 325xp/gp Guts loses/Des wins = 475xp/gp | 975xp/gp |
| Sunwolf06-29-05, 11:33 AM | Another issue, and this one sucks to correct(in theory), is that Sinnoch won initiative. That means he goes first in every round, not second. That means both bear 1 and 2 get extra attacks in the rounds they got killed, but it also means Sinnoch would not hit because he went before the shield spell wore off. If xanadu wants to check this and he is within his rights to not do so: Sinnoch and bears init higher than Telverans ==> Upto rnd 14 is the same. in rnd 15 Telvs AC is 24 to bears -- 1 bear gets 2claws and a bite vs AC 24 rnd 16 is the same. in rnd 17 1 bear gets 2claws and a bite vs AC 22 in rnd 18 Telverans AC goes to 24 due to entangle expiring before bears act which negates the hit in round 18 So net result -- 2 claws +1 bite vs AC24 and 2claws +1 bite vs AC22 but lose the hit in round 18 which was for 5hp. Bites only hit on a 20. Claws need 16+ vs ac24 or 14+ vs ac 22 to hit counting flanking bonus. Sinnoch shooting into melee gets a -4 penalty on attacks (no precise shot feat), Telveran also likely gets a +4 cover bonus due to being surrounded by bears -- either one pushes Telverans effective AC to 28 or 32 for both together (24 or 28 when shield runs out in rnd 16-18). Don't think Sinnoch's arrows will affect the outcome. However, his 23+1 might hit one of the bears in round 14 for 1d4+2... In round 23, telveran should hit since mischance at 5' in obscuring mist is only 20%. With average damage on this hit fight ends in round 25 then. |
| King Uther06-29-05, 11:42 AM | The hit in round 18 would still hit, because you would still have a 22 AC. As far as the 20% goes, this is true. But you would get less attacks over all because Sinnoch would have a chance to gain distance since he goes first. It's a simple matter of mathematics. With all of the hits taken into account, Telveran was reduced to 4 hp before lay on hands. With 6 more attacks possible(two will only hit with a 20), you have a 30%, 30%, 20%, 20% chance of losing not including bites, because minimum damage takes you down. |
| xanadu06-29-05, 11:52 AM | The sinnoch fight is diving me nuts. Because Telveren was listed first I assumed hwe won the intiative... hold on, I'll look into this. |
| xanadu06-29-05, 12:50 PM | OK, If I give Sinnoch the initiative things work out worse for him because: (1) The extra bear attacks all missed. (2) Telveran's shield is still up in round 15 which makes his arrow miss. Because the fight would run illogically if I suddenly had Sinnoch go first (Sinnoch threw the tanglefoot bag after Telveran charged, if we have Sinnoch go first then he'd throw the tanglefoot bag before Telveran charged!) let's just say Sinnoch delayed his intiative. Now, because Sinnoch delayed his intitiative, the arrow in round 15 does hit (I already took the -4 firing into melee into account). Damage is 1d4+2 [+1 mighty +1 magic, small sized] which comes out to 4. The fight's outcome does not appear to be effected either way so I would say let the initiative stay and include the extra 4 damage. I think the big issue in the fight is in round 20 where Telveren hit Sinnoch for 14 HPs but for some strange reason I never computed the damage. The intitiative thing cannot come into play here because the only reason mist was cast was to escape from melee. Telveran is charging an opponent he can see. But in fairness to Sinnoch, I made a mistake in letting Telveran know in which direction he withdrew afterwards when there was no way to know this because Telveran was in the mist at the time. This allowed Telveran to quickly acquire Sinnoch's positioning via his familiar's scent and get a hit in round 25. I guess what I am saying is round #20 damage really should be included but Telveran's hit in round #25 probably should never really occur. As the damages are identical and it appears one should happen and one should not, I would say let's call this a wash - no gladiator gains or loses. In round 30, Telveran just happened to be close enough to get a lucky spot check. Eventually this would have happened (as it really did in this fight) in any event because he would circulate around the arena and anything within a 60 foot diameter would have been picked up by his familair's scent. Also, if I knew Telveran had only 12 HPs at the time, he would have made his sweep by moving 20 feet and using the cure light wounds wand every round until he got out of the crit danger zone where one shot could potentially drop him [over 20 HPs...he had 22 originally that's why I did not have him use his wand]. Moreover, during the fight with the bears, anytime he got low in HPs, I would have him lay on hands because Sunwolf indicated in his tactics to do so. In general I think it is very difficult for snipers to defeat any gladiator with resources to cure themselves. At most snipers can only do like 8 or 9 HPs and cannot maintain a constant flow of damage because they must either move away or hide. Someone with a wand of clw could literally make a sniper run out of arrows. |

| Sunwolf06-29-05, 01:29 PM | Lay on hands is a supernatural abiltiy and as such does not draw AOO. As to the 1/3 rule for lay on hands ... Pitlords have ruled both ways in Telveran's fights. Probably something that should get an official ruling. |
| King Uther06-29-05, 01:35 PM | It should get a ruling, not because it affects the fight, but because it is important to know. If one of the bears damaged you again, than 4 hp would have you dead, whereas 12 would have you alive. Stupid Supernatural abilities. Edit: While scent does have a 60 foot diameter, that's only a 30 foot radius, meaning if Sinnoch withdrew and Telveran didn't know the direction there is no way for him to be detected unless Telveran moves in the right direction. But even so, scent won't pinpoint, just give direction. |
| Malither7606-29-05, 01:40 PM | Guts ended the round at (-2,-30) the undead are not inteligent and have been comanded to fire there bows, no new comand was givin so no AoO and even if they did only the one at the top would get one with one claw even a crit would not bring guts down, the zombie does not charge either as it continues to fire, some have a -4 from soft cover as they are standin in a row, they don't move then fire as this would be a tactical and inteligent thing to do, there comand is to fire at Guts and thats what they did, and thats why Guts did the CDG only one skeleton threatining and it had a bow in hand. hope this clears everything up, I will edit the fight with the rewards in there and change the true strike to being cast on the proper round. |

| xanadu06-29-05, 02:07 PM | OK, this is the 2nd fight in a row Desdenova is getting a bum deal. I think the fight should be fought with Guts using a stilled true strike and not a silent true strike because: (1) that is what is on his sheet (2) i made it quite clear in my tactics that true strike was my major concern should melee occur vs. Guts. Desdenova hears the spell being cast and moves away the round it is cast and the round afterwards as indicated on my tactics If Cerebus wants to make a retroactive change because he meant to used silent fine, then Desdenova gets to make a retoractive change because I didn't mean to cast arcane spells wearing a breastplate. I'll bring no armor and use a mage armor scroll to buff once in the air. This isn't a retroactive change, it's me correcting a typo on my sheet because I wrote Stilled instead of Silent. The only possible metamagic that can be put on a True Strike scroll is Silent Spell, so having one with Still Spell is impossible. Edit: The Zombie's attack is the one I already spoke about before, he would have hit in the final round. So a d10 is needed to be rolled to determine if he did enough damage to knock Guts out. He has 12 HPs left so a 7 or higher on the d10 is required. |
| Malither7606-29-05, 02:34 PM | I rolled a 4 on the d10 |
| Jindl06-29-05, 02:45 PM | How would Anna use telekinesis to bring those weapons to battle when she cannot use it to move things 20 feet every 1d4 rounds? And do 12 Huge Bastard swords fit within 10 feet of each other? Otherwise she could not use violent thrust on them. Anna brings them by moving them into a basket and TK'ing the entire basket (you'll note that the weight of the basket when filled with swords and alchemist fires is under 300 lbs). Anna's TK is usable once ever 1d4 rounds, however, a sustained force (which is used to move the basket) has a duration of concentration (up to 1rnd/lvl), which means that it lasts 12 rounds per use. So Anna can easily move her material plane possessions around with her TK. We once had a gladiator with a land speed of 5 ft. Anna and her basket can run circles around him, even if she does have to take a 1-3 round break from TK every 12 rounds. We also had a gnomish necromancer who would bring a 300lb iron boulder to the arena for use with TK. Ask him how he moved that around. As for size, a huge bastard sword wieghs 24 lbs. No length is given, although I would estimate it to be about 8 ft long. A bundle of 12 (scabbards tied together) should form a bundle about 2 ft in diameter that's 8 ft long. So yes, I think they could easily fit within the 10 ft required by the spell. -Jindl |

The only possible metamagic that can be put on a True Strike scroll is Silent Spell, so having one with Still Spell is impossible. This is completely unfair. I dont have the SRD memorized as to what components are required for each spell. Since Guts does not have a silent true strike scroll written on his sheet he should not be able to use it because I could not prepare for it. My tactics made it quite clear that true strike was my major concern. And its not true that silent is the only metamagic, why can't it be quickened or extended? My tactics made it quite clear that true strike was my major concern. And its not true that silent is the only metamagic, why can't it be quickened or extended? You can't Quicken a scroll because the casting time is always minimum of 1 standard action (check rules of the game on this one, Skip explains it better than me). Extend spell doesn't apply either because the spell doesn't really have a duration per say, it has special text that says "applies to your next single attack roll (if it is made before the end of the next round)"....I don't think you are allowed to Extend spells with this sort of wording. Empower, Enlarge, Maximize, and Widen can't be used because True Strike has no values that can be modified by any of these. You could use Heighten spell on it however (which I didn't think of), but that would be rather pointless because True Strike doesn't need a higher spell level to be effective. Edit: In any event I've got a meeting here at work so I will stop arguing about this. It's up to the Elders anyway on how to handle a situation like this one. |

| Tellish_of_Ket06-29-05, 04:04 PM | Lay on Hands do not follow the 1/3 rule. imho. About the issue with the scroll. Just because the spell doesn't have a component, doesn't mean you can't apply it. Ex. I can memorize all the still-true strikes i want. All it does it take up a slot higher, and serves no other purpose. It's not impossible, just dumb. IMHO, if on the character sheet it was written still-true strike, and was used in the course of the fight, then what's done is done. It should still count as a still-ts scroll, regardless of typo. The responsibility is that of the gladiator to ensure that he purchased the proper scroll of his desire. The pitlord can't "assume" it was a typo and change it for him in mid fight. It is a legal item. Tactics were sent (assuming) with that specific item in mind and carried out as such, it should stand as is...a still-ts scroll. Just because i take the feat "eschew materials" does that mean i can longer cast spells that do not have ANY material components? No, of course not. By taking that feat, ALL my spells are affected by it. Those that have a material cost of less than 1gp, i don't need mats, those that are greater, i do. It doesn't suddenly cancel my ability to cast those without ANY mats. -ToK just my two cents worth anyhow. **edit** @cerebus: au-contraire...you can make a quickened scroll of magic missle (just an example), but it still takes the standard action to activate, and thus any benefit derived from the "quicken" aiblity is lost. |
| Mind Rogue06-29-05, 04:09 PM | Deadly, I have a few questions about sequence and events happening. First, it appears that I won initiative, but somehow went second. Then, in round 6, you have me listed as taking both my readied action and a withdrawl in the same round, where my readied action should have been bumped into the middle of Fasin's action (before he can attack), and then my withdrawl should have been at the begining of the next round (although I don't know why I would be withdrawing). Then, in round 8, you have us both drinking a potion and attacking in the same round, although that is two standard actions for both of us. This likewise happens for Fasin in round 14. Finally, retreat was never part of my strategy for when I became gravely wounded, and I certainly would have used tumble to escape. |
| Cerebus1306-29-05, 04:16 PM | @cerebus: au-contraire...you can make a quickened scroll of magic missle (just an example), but it still takes the standard action to activate, and thus any benefit derived from the "quicken" aiblity is lost. Then I guess I'm just talking about common sense...because I wouldn't have gone out of my way to apply a completely useless Metamagic feat to my scroll on purpose. But since this seems to be such a huge issue...if it would make everyone happy I'll forfeit the win to xanadu and adjust my Gold and XP accordingly. However I would like a policy to be written into the rules on how Pitlords should handle typos and mistakes. I've seen fights run where a gladiator calculated his AC to be lower than it should be and then that was changed during the battle to make it harder to hit them....even though their opponent may have been planning how to best beat the listed (but incorrect) AC. |

First my opponents get to use items not on their sheet and secondly I'm not sure why she went with ray of enfeeblement in the first place since melee was clearly inevitable and thus should have casted resist energy as was stated in my tactics. Looks like retirement and 5 credits wasted  |

Looks like retirement and 5 credits wasted  Ya, it's painful...i feel your pain. But you honestly have NO idea how many times some of us older guys have lost do to bone-headedness....both pitlording and whining players nit-picking over extremely small details. NONE! If the Pitlord is willing to fix it and re-run it correctly that is his perogative. I absolutely hate seeing gladiators lose due to errors, and my policy is to strive to ensure fight accuracy over caving to "player-made errors" and tactical oversights. Perfect example: I ran a fight for Iron the Panza against a sorcerer. Iron could have charged, but would only have killed said sorcerer on a confirmed crit. As the pitlord i chose to have him heal. He didn't heal enough, and was killed on the next spell. After discussing it with both players, realizing it was my error and it made no sense to heal, and should have attacked to the death and it was written in his tactics. I gave him his ONE LAST roll. Guess what? It was a crit and thus changed the outcome. The moral is this. You never know what can change with just one roll. We've had one-shot crit-kills before, so it's easily possible. If i were you're pitlord, all i would strive for is to ensure it is mechanically sound and within the scope of your tactics. Any player errors would be their responsibility, not mine. Hope this helps. -ToK |

| xanadu06-29-05, 08:18 PM | TOK- I hear what you are saying and try not to say anything when my guys lose. I will admit I am the dunce for forgetting about ASF which put me in this predicament to begin with and am frustrated that I missed the ASF chance, the added spellcraft check, or even the contingent zombies last damage roll - any one which potentially completely change the fight and all of which were easy rolls that she happened not to make. I've grown accustomed to crummy rolling so I try to prepare contingencies like making sure resist energy acid is up before any melee because I know without it I am dead on one hit. If I have that up I am alive, he needs a 20 to hit me and he is pretty hurt from my undead which are still fighting him - I'll still take my chances there. Her first fight she should have won. Opponent was disabled and forced to rage and melee while I have a longspear. Ready vs. charge (as said in my tactics) = dead opponent yet I charged. It's not the magic domain - I wanted to try a character with access to that domain. I do not want to play a gladiator when each of her fights irritate me by thinking of them. I did not used to think my tactics, if somewhat longer than the norm, are particularly difficult to follow, but I guess I am mistaken. |
