| TelinArtho12-26-07, 03:02 PM | Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match. News & Whatnot Happy Holidays everyone - We are in a State of Emergency. In order to get out of the SOE - we need more active pitlords. Please volunteer today! Please note that there are new threads for the council and the prison. Rules of Gladius All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius. It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2. Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders. Pairings GM MindwandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline. Link to pairings. Make sure that your character is not in prison. Pitlording You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight. If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help. You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete. If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool (http://wormhole.ath.cx/coco/coco_dist.php) should suffice. Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold. If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact. Comments & Concerns Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread. Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords. Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN! If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius! |
| MindWandererB12-26-07, 04:39 PM | Pairings are done. The State of Emergency has been averted (barely), since applying it would have cut the number of gladiators down by only 1. | MindWandererB12-26-07, 04:48 PM | @MWB: im sorry but Darian is paired against Wiener Wadlbeisser with one of my characters in it... that needs to be changed Dangit, I knew there was a reason I hadn't done that before. Hold on. Edit: Only way to fix it was with a rematch. | templer1012-26-07, 04:56 PM | MWB - you seem to have forgotten lady liara at ECL 7 - who is marked as ready for this week - on another note - i can take another fight if needed. ALSO - you haven't marked Elrick as doing his crafting. |
| Hirumajoe12-26-07, 05:22 PM | Umm... Valen Sky wasn't set to active this week. If you want to take a load off someone, you can remove that fight (since its just a monster fight). It would also save me a credit. :) |
| McJarvis12-26-07, 05:31 PM | tactics off for thorell |
| Erithmu12-26-07, 05:31 PM | And right after I roll your monster too ... I think MWB saw the thing at the top of the sheet, not your title line. I'm good either way. |
| MindWandererB12-26-07, 05:41 PM | And right after I roll your monster too ... I think MWB saw the thing at the top of the sheet, not your title line. I'm good either way. Yeah--the ready-crawler doesn't parse ECLs above 10, so I check those manually, and I didn't notice that the title line was actually blank. | Hirumajoe12-26-07, 05:42 PM | Oh, I suppose the top line would be confusing. I was considering activating Valen, but decided against it and went with Altair and Kai. I thought the web crawler thing used to do the pairings only reported back the title line though. I'd actually prefer not to start Valen's 3FC since he hasn't actually spent the gold from his previous 3FC. *Shrug*. |
| TelinArtho12-26-07, 05:47 PM | In light of the changed pairings - hirumajoe - go ahead and delete the preliminary tactics I sent along... now that we're facing off against each other... |
| Erithmu12-26-07, 05:50 PM | @MWB: Mal-2's goes to ECL 15 ... you might try it ... |

| MindWandererB12-26-07, 06:06 PM | @MWB: Mal-2's goes to ECL 15 ... you might try it ... Hmm... yeah, I see it does, but it also appears to be buggy. I'm getting a lot of "no subject found..." |
| Erithmu12-26-07, 06:13 PM | Hmm... yeah, I see it does, but it also appears to be buggy. I'm getting a lot of "no subject found..." I think that is the error message ... but it limits the work you have to do ... |

| dulsi12-26-07, 09:32 PM | Morro's Tactics have been sent to Hirumajoe. |
| Hirumajoe12-27-07, 12:30 AM | Got both tactics, thanks for sending them so quickly. This way I have more time to learn how to pitlord a fight :D Good luck to both @Hirumajoe: Altair again? Please use some mercy on Eland..it's his first fight :P This time I'm going to get tactics out before deadline... :embarrass Oh, I'm going to be making a prison post and sending you and the pitlord a pm. Looks like you made a few minor mistakes on Eland. Some of which may affect your tactics greatly. Mostly you can't make potions out of personal target spells (like Expeditious Retreat), and that personal target psionic tattooes, like Chameleon, cost double (so 100 gp per, not 50). As for mercy, I have none for characters. :) Plenty for players and pitlords though... |
| Kaigan12-27-07, 12:55 AM | @Telin: Just sent to Ryalyth's tactics. @Hirumajoe: Will send you Leyladin's tactics tomorrow morning. I have also received your pm about CrazyArtificer's Eland. I will allow the tattoos because he has enough gp, but the Potions of Expeditious Retreat cannot be used. Still awaiting on your tactics. @CrazyArtificer: Please note the above, and still awaiting on your tactics. @Turanson: Still awaiting tactics for Mineau. Please note that the monster info for your fight has been posted in the battles thread. Thanks everyone. Kaigan |
| Durzulgor12-27-07, 01:22 AM | @Erithmu: Just to make shure my comments (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14671592&postcount=109) on the fight (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14665776&postcount=1587) that I caused to be held over don't go unnoticed, I'll bring 'em over: 1st: sorry that I'm causing this fight to be held over. 2nd: I'm guessing you're considering to let Snaga use my wand of enlarge person. Well I dropped it in Round 20 and moved afterwards. Snaga was squeezing through the bars at that time. So he'd have to search for it in the sewer waters where I stood before I moved to where I finished Berri off, eventhough he has no idea I ever dropped it... edit: I dropped the wand in round 20, moved in round 21 and Snaga got us into view again in round 22. edit2: one more thing that might just make this fight easier for you: Summon swarm = concentration +2 rounds. Snaga stops to concentrate on the swarm that is trying to eat him in round 17 and the very next round the swarm disiipates. My guess: It should stay 1 round longer and has quite a good chance on killing him, even if he drinks his potions before it attacks. edit3: and once more: Isn't Aiewae (Snaga's raven-familiar) sharing snaga's space and thus getting the same damage from the swarm? edit: not that it matters, but a bat swarm has only str 3 so it should've got a -4 penalty on the str-check to move through the web |

| TelinArtho12-27-07, 01:41 PM | Ryalyth Lorn'elth (Kaigan) vs Dire Weasel and Kobold Expert 4 (Unknown Monster) is up. Had a fun time designing the Dire Weasel rider... |
| Kaigan12-27-07, 02:04 PM | @Hirumajoe: Received tactics, fight will probably be run tomorrow night. @Turason: Received tactics, fight will probably be run tomorrow night. @Telin: did not expect the weasel to be used as a mount, lol. But yeah... I did mention in tactics to take a 5ft away before rapid shooting so as to prevent AoO, not sure if that was possible, but it doesn't matter. Thanks for the fight. Kaigan |
| TelinArtho12-27-07, 02:12 PM | You can't take 5ft steps when your movement is hindered - ie - when he is the victim of a tanglefoot bag. When he fell victim to it - it became a decision from among the following: 1. Withdraw (didn't like this option since your tactics were pretty offensive in nature) 2. Move and attack (draws 2 attacks of opportunity but only gives you one attack) 3. Rapid shoot in melee (draws 2 attacks of opportunity, but still keeps mostly in line with your tactics). |

| CrazyArtificer12-27-07, 05:21 PM | Korwald vs Undurion is up. Grappling an old man is never easy (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14677663&postcount=1598) |
| lonewolf12-27-07, 05:29 PM | Korwald vs Undurion is up. Grappling an old man is never easy (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14677663&postcount=1598) thanks for running I only have a problem with the rewards: since we both have horses the ally penalties cancel each other out, so Korwald should get 900xp/gp and Undurion should gain 300xp/gp. |
| CrazyArtificer12-27-07, 05:47 PM | You are right, I didn't realize that. Fixed. |
| Durzulgor12-27-07, 07:32 PM | now that was really fun! Thx for the run! The outcome is greatly appreciated! ;-) Funny, that it actually took him so long to take me down, after my blindness was unable to get through his SR! Well, seems like an old man knows some grappling tricks! ;-) As for me, shooting from horseback: SRD, equipment, weapons: "A longbow is too unwieldy to use while you are mounted." Doesn't really matter here, since I missed anyway, but just so you know! |
| lonewolf12-27-07, 07:35 PM | A longbow is, but a composite longbow isnt. :P |
| MindWandererB12-28-07, 04:14 AM | @Rith: Tactics for Gakhnalak have been sent. This time I noticed it was the City instead of the Plains, like I thought it was last time for some reason.... |

Keep your dirty hands off if you don't want me to punch you to death!" while raising his fist towards an apalled Korwald ;) Too bad I was too tired to write a decent story out of it. As for me, shooting from horseback: SRD, equipment, weapons: "A longbow is too unwieldy to use while you are mounted." Doesn't really matter here, since I missed anyway, but just so you know! | lonewolf12-28-07, 04:31 PM | @hogarth, Erithmu & Stormwind: After discussion in the Tavern, I rule that incorporeal creatures cannot be grappled at all. You can send me new tactics according to that ruling. I will run the fight on Tuesday, so there is no time pressure. |
| hogarth12-28-07, 04:37 PM | @hogarth, Erithmu & Stormwind: After discussion in the Tavern, I rule that incorporeal creatures cannot be grappled at all. You can send me new tactics according to that ruling. I will run the fight on Tuesday, so there is no time pressure. What about disarming a Ghost Touch weapon, either using TK or by hand? Is that possible? |
| whitebaron12-28-07, 04:48 PM | well, it was ruled against me, that you cannot disarm a ghost touch weapon from a ghost, unless you are incorporeal too. |
| lonewolf12-28-07, 04:48 PM | A ghost touch weapon is incorporeal or corporeal whatever is more advantageous to the wielder. As long as it is incorporeal it cannot be disarmed by hand by a corporeal creature. As long as it is corporeal it cannot be disarmed by hand by an incorporeal creature. Telekinesis works, but you still have the 50% miss chance if it is incorporeal at the moment you use Telekinesis. |
| Stormwind12-28-07, 04:48 PM | Actually after rereading part of the SRD again, I am inclined to say that it isn't possible due to the following (under incorporeal subtype (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/monsterTypes.html#incorporeal)): Incorporeal creatures cannot fall or take falling damage. Incorporeal creatures cannot make trip or grapple attacks, nor can they be tripped or grappled. In fact, they cannot take any physical action that would move or manipulate an opponent or its equipment, nor are they subject to such actions. Since disarming is a physical action that would move or manipulate an incorporeal creatures equipment, I would have to argue that it is not possible to disarm an incorporeal creature. |
| lonewolf12-28-07, 04:57 PM | alright, that means that an incorporeal creature cannot disarm anything by hand. Telekinesis is not a physical action and thus still works. |
| hogarth12-28-07, 04:59 PM | Telekinesis works, but you still have the 50% miss chance if it is incorporeal at the moment you use Telekinesis. Please read the rules on incorporeality carefully. The 50% chance only refers to the possibility of ignoring damage; it doesn't mean a flat 50% chance to avoid all spells and effects (whether they do damage or not). |
| lonewolf12-28-07, 05:11 PM | Please read the rules on incorporeality carefully. The 50% chance only refers to the possibility of ignoring damage; it doesn't mean a flat 50% chance to avoid all spells and effects (whether they do damage or not). Libris Mortis backs you up on that. => no miss chance for telekinesis |
| Salrantol12-28-07, 05:36 PM | Plus, even if it were for damage--the miss chance only applies to corporeal sources--incorporeal sources (i.e. manifested ghosts) have no such miss chance. |
| whitebaron12-28-07, 05:38 PM | Plus, even if it were for damage--the miss chance only applies to corporeal sources--incorporeal sources (i.e. manifested ghosts) have no such miss chance. if an incorporeal ghosts telekinesis is an incorporeal grapple, i wonder how he ever manages to use it on corporeal things... |
| Stormwind12-28-07, 05:50 PM | alright, that means that an incorporeal creature cannot disarm anything by hand. Telekinesis is not a physical action and thus still works. Actually, the description of telekinesis does indicate that it wouldn't work against incorporeal as it states: Combat Maneuver: Alternatively, once per round, you can use telekinesis to perform a bull rush, disarm, grapple (including pin), or trip. Resolve these attempts as normal, except that they don’t provoke attacks of opportunity, you use your caster level in place of your base attack bonus (for disarm and grapple), you use your Intelligence modifier (if a wizard) or Charisma modifier (if a sorcerer) in place of your Strength or Dexterity modifier, and a failed attempt doesn’t allow a reactive attempt by the target (such as for disarm or trip). No save is allowed against these attempts, but spell resistance applies normally. This version of the spell can last 1 round per caster level, but it ends if you cease concentration. Since a disarm is a normally a physical action, the bolded section of text above would indicate that a telkinetic disarm attempt should be resolved as normal, that is, as a physical maneuver. Thus, given the prior discussion, I would argue against allowing telekinetic disarms. |
| lonewolf12-28-07, 06:00 PM | Resolve as normal != they are identical Resolve as normal only means that the same rolls are used. At least thats how I interpret it. |
| Stormwind12-28-07, 06:20 PM | Resolve as normal != they are identical Resolve as normal only means that the same rolls are used. At least thats how I interpret it. I would interpret it that they are identical except for the specified exceptions. I don't see how it can be interpreted in any other way. However, in this case it is your call as you are the pitlord. |
| lonewolf12-28-07, 06:27 PM | I would interpret it that they are identical except for the specified exceptions. I don't see how it can be interpreted in any other way. However, in this case it is your call as you are the pitlord. Unless an Elder agrees with you, thats how I am gonna run it. |
| MindWandererB12-28-07, 07:03 PM | I'd agree with Lonewolf as far as the general principle goes. I considered this in Flutterthought vs. Solstice when I thought Solstice might grapple for damage; even though a normal grapple wouldn't hurt (DR 10/cold iron), spells strike as spells and thus ignore DR. And if there's one exception, there may be others. |
| Salrantol12-29-07, 01:47 AM | if an incorporeal ghosts telekinesis is an incorporeal grapple, i wonder how he ever manages to use it on corporeal things... :rolleyes:It's not an incorporeal grapple--it's a supernatural grapple from an incorporeal source. Incorporeal creatures have no problems dealing with corporeal creatures. There's no line that says, "Even when struck by magic or magic weapons, a corporeal creature has a 50% chance to ignore any damage from an incorporeal source — except for a force effect or damage dealt by a ghost touch weapon," or "Even when striking with magic or magic weapons, an incorporeal creature has a 50% chance to have a corporeal target ignore any damage — except for a force effect or damage dealt by a ghost touch weapon." But there is a line that says, "Even when struck by magic or magic weapons, an incorporeal creature has a 50% chance to ignore any damage from a corporeal source — except for a force effect or damage dealt by a ghost touch weapon." It specifically references corporeal sources, so incorporeal sources have no difficulty dealing with incorporeal creatures either, or rather, there is no chance to ignore the damage if the source is incorporeal. And with regards to grappling:Corporeal creatures cannot trip or grapple incorporeal creatures. |
| Stormwind12-29-07, 03:59 AM | I'd agree with Lonewolf as far as the general principle goes. I considered this in Flutterthought vs. Solstice when I thought Solstice might grapple for damage; even though a normal grapple wouldn't hurt (DR 10/cold iron), spells strike as spells and thus ignore DR. And if there's one exception, there may be others. @MWB: I can see your point with regards to magic bypassing DR and so forth, but I would argue that this is not a good comparative for this situation. It would be more accurate (in my opinion), to compare this situation (telekinetic disarm) to an immunity, and as incorporeal creatures are 'not subject to such actions' that 'move or manipulate them or their equipment', I would state that this is in fact an immunity, and as such cannot be bypassed with spells. Basically, if even other incorporeal creatures cannot perform such combat maneuvers (bull rush, disarm, grapple, or trip), then I find it difficult to justify why a spell could do any one of these things. In particular if an incorporeal creature's lack of a body means it cannot be disarmed even by another incorporeal creature, then how could this be accomplished by a spell, especially when the spell does not specifically say that it works in this situation, but rather says 'Resolve these attempts as normal'. To conclude, I would consider a ruling that allows only telekinetic disarms to work on incorporeal creatures to be inconsistent with the RAW. To me it would be like ruling that energy missile (cold) works against creatures with an immunity to cold. |
| templer1012-29-07, 10:43 AM | Kai engel vs ialgo is done (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14691879&postcount=1599). |
| Hirumajoe12-29-07, 04:21 PM | @Templer10: Thanks for the run. Just a few quick errors on the rewards: Kai crafts for 120 gp, not 20. The scroll of power is CL 2, so the mage armor has a little under 2 hours left. In principle if the time roll if 1 hour, he still has it up, so if you could list that under continuing buffs, I'd appreciate it. |
| lonewolf12-31-07, 11:13 AM | Thorell vs Lelenia is up Go alpha strike... @Erithmu & hogarth: Note that I still dont have adjusted tactics from you guys for the fight vs Varjo. If I dont get any in the next 18 hours, I will have your characters surrender since your only plan to damage Varjo in your first tactics is no longer valid. |

The rest is up to lonewolf ;) |

| McJarvis01-01-08, 12:01 PM | @lonewolf: thnx for the run. with that much of expendable use on thorells side, i already knew from the moment tactics were posted i'D lose. Heh. I just can't wait 'till ECL4 when thorell can get a bit higher of an expendable cap & the ability to scribe sl2 scrolls. He'll be a casting machine then :) I think the net effect is 4x the scroll power due to our rules on expendibles/scribing letting you go over the "normal" limit |
| lonewolf01-01-08, 02:07 PM | 1 hour before deadline and only 5 fights are finished from 11 total. That must be some kind of record low... |
| templer1001-01-08, 02:14 PM | 1 hour before deadline and only 5 fights are finished from 11 total. That must be some kind of record low... Blame it on new year hangovers.... |
| Hirumajoe01-01-08, 02:21 PM | Leyladin vs Morro is now up here |
| Kaigan01-01-08, 02:57 PM | Blame it on new year hangovers.... That :) and sick family :(. My fights will be up tonight. They will be past the deadline, unfortunately, but it should be up well before pairings deadline. Sorry for the inconviences. Kaigan |
| dulsi01-01-08, 03:35 PM | Leyladin vs Morro is now up here Looks like rewards are off and arrows used are missing. Thanks for the fight. See Telin, I told you I do better than a fifty-fifty win-lose record. :) Favorite comment in the Leyladin's tatics Either way, it will be painful for me. Hmmm... dwarf with 2x my hp bah. Still feel like I need better tactics than just being saved by number of hit points. Now if only I got matched up against Sunstroke for the last fight of the cycle. :) (When I joined Telin said he didn't like the looks of ECL3 with Sunstroke there. I think Morro could take him at the moment. Not sure if he'll be able to do so at ECL4.) |
| Hirumajoe01-01-08, 07:01 PM | Hmm... Thought I fixed the rewards and arrows, but didn't apparently save... Fixed now. |
| hogarth01-01-08, 07:47 PM | Balthazar Picsou and Solstice vs. Varjo is up. I'm not totally sure why Solstice didn't try to heal himself up, but I don't have any complaints with the result. Can't argue with the dice! |
| lonewolf01-01-08, 08:05 PM | I'm not totally sure why Solstice didn't try to heal himself up, but I don't have any complaints with the result. Can't argue with the dice! Balthazar was invisible. If he hadnt been invisible Varjo would have drained him already. |
| Erithmu01-02-08, 01:42 AM | @LW: I'm fine w/ the fight ... @my gladiators: New Years + holidays + ski trip = no time to run fights. I must ask for forgiveness as it isn't my normal mode of working. To the holdover I have it through the sleep stuff and just need to figure out how it ends (probably w/ invis dropping soon) @This week: I'll ask MWB to reassign. again ... sorry. |
| Kaigan01-02-08, 03:56 AM | Mineau vs. 2 Large Vipers is up. Fight can be found here (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14721514&postcount=1604). |
| Turanson01-02-08, 07:43 AM | Mineau vs. 2 Large Vipers is up. Fight can be found here (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14721514&postcount=1604). Thanks for the run Sorry about the sleep spell I always seems to forget about the 4 HD limit.:P one comment since the viper2 had not forced Mineau into melee he should had stayed away an blasted MM from wand, and not moved into a range from where he could be attacked, this at least was what I thought I had written, just curious of who I should writ it to make the plan clear? pleas note that this is not meant as criticism and that I just want to better myself. Again Thanks for the run |
| whitebaron01-02-08, 07:54 AM | basically, you wanted to put it under the contingency. while i can see in hindsight why mm should take precedence over scorching ray, i'm not sure i'd have read the tactics differently. try to use better formatting for your tactics, or to seperate things more, like: contingencies: if i am based by a snake: it is unwounded: scorching ray it is already wounded: magic missile from wand. you can do this even without forum tags: contingencies: -------------- if i am based by a snake: * it is unwounded: scorching ray * it is already wounded: magic missile from wand. |
| Turanson01-02-08, 08:01 AM | I can see what you mean and I'll be sure to do that in the future. Thanks Baron |
| Kaigan01-02-08, 10:11 AM | ECL 4: Altair (Hirumajoe) vs. Eland (Crazy Artificer) is up. Look for fight here. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14722576&postcount=1605) |
| CrazyArtificer01-02-08, 10:15 AM | Thanks Kaigan for running.. I would have tried to hide even if entangled, but I don't think it would have changed much :) The roller didn't like me this time. :P As for the prison violations, I reported my ranks badly in the char sheet but the modifiers were correct. Those 2 ranks are actually 4 cross-class ranks. I'll fix the tattoo thing asap. |
| Durzulgor01-02-08, 10:26 AM | @my gladiators: New Years + holidays + ski trip = no time to run fights. I must ask for forgiveness as it isn't my normal mode of working. To the holdover I have it through the sleep stuff and just need to figure out how it ends (probably w/ invis dropping soon) Ah! At least there is news about that! ;-) I don't have any problems with the fight taking longer, as long as I know you didn't forget it! ;-) I hope you had a pleasant holidays! Now for the rules part: Did you have a look at my comment concerning the swarm (round 16-18)? In short: Snaga dropping concentration in round 17 and the swarm dissipating in round 18, eventhough it's "concentration +2 rounds". And btw: Happy new year! ;-) |
| TelinArtho01-02-08, 10:31 AM | Similarly for me - New Year's hit me hard this year - so I haven't had much time to work on my remaining fight. I'll try to squeeze it in today (it doesn't look too complicated...) - but no promises. @dulsi - while a 50/50 winrate is what I aim for - I would not consider looking at it after 2 fights... |
| McJarvis01-02-08, 10:34 AM | @dulsi - while a 50/50 winrate is what I aim for - I would not consider looking at it after 2 fights... I think my system of evaluating character after they have progressed 1 level is pretty solid. It seems most gladiators have "settled" by then [unless they have dramatic power increases after a certain ECL, like I would expect Hirm's Kai to do better after he actually got second level spells...] |
| TelinArtho01-02-08, 10:37 AM | And your system is? |
| McJarvis01-02-08, 10:43 AM | And your system is? ...only taking gladiators who have progressed 1 level as a valid representation of thier true power.[the second part of my sentence in that post actually defined the first part, if you read it correctly...] When I was tracking upsets/beatdowns[which I plan on starting up again for the new year], there were very few "surprises" power rating wise at ecl4 and above. I think ecl3 acts well as a "sorter" level. |
| TelinArtho01-02-08, 10:58 AM | Ah - gotcha. |
| TelinArtho01-02-08, 02:10 PM | Lady Liara (templer10) vs Wiener Wadlbeisser (whitebaron, mucki, lonewolf) is up. Speaking of dice that hate people... |
