Fights of the Week: December 27th

Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM Caterane will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Make sure that your character is not in prison (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=571107&goto=lastpost).

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help.
You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Recent News and Developments
Happy New Year!
If you're in a guild (or just interested in it) the World Event is in its 2nd week.
Also if you're interested in the guild system please vote in the "Discussion: What should the guild system be like?"

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

Trying to decide if I should start writing tactics for Torel vs Farig or if we are going to get bumped up to fight Antalya ...

@Cat: Assault Mission is up.

Knowing the way things went for Jar-red - you should probably assume the latter...

12-27-06, 04:25 PM
In other news: Featylec goes burglarizing and comes out with one measly powerstone.

@Zevox: you really don't have to send me burglary info, just include it in your tactics.

Argh - I hope we don't get matched up with Antalya... Farig is apparently the one character I have with no method of taking care of silver DR...

@Cat/Pitlords - Kraegin is crafting this week (and for the next 3 weeks too...)

@TM - let me know what equipment the opponents have (as I'm sure I don't have a high enough knowledge to identify them...)

Out of curiosity, how are multi-member guild interceptions handled? Same way as team arena fights? Random starting locations for all and so forth?

Yep.

@ MWB - Tactics recieved.

@ My pitlords - Tactics will be off tomorrow. I feel terrible tonight, so I'm going to bed early.

@ My players - If I have tactics for a fight tomorrow, it'll be run tomorrow. I hope to run one tomorrow and one friday, since I work saturday (barring this illness sticking around until then), and have no idea what my schedule next week is.

Ihdald Seaslash (Milov) miniquest to join WAR : TheMagister [Miniquest] [Guilds]

TM - I can only assume you know what happened so far on the plot for Ihdald's miniquestin' and whatnot, but if you don't, lemme know and I'll go find it all. Otherwise, I'll try to get on a bit more this week to actually do the MQ. Lemme know when it's all set up to go ;)
Zevox

12-28-06, 10:57 AM
@ Macbrea - Tactics for Annalina Vale (vs Faelto) have been PMed. You know, its kind of ironic that Faelto hasn't fought since her loss to Indrithia, and now she gets to fight her partner. I love little ironies like that :) .

Zevox
TelinArtho

Yeah yeah yeah... broken record there Zevox... maybe I've got a few little tricks for Annalina this time though... maybe.

Anyway, Faelto's tactics were sent last night.
Farig's tactics, Ilendil's burglary and tactics, and Bulgar's tactics sent this morning.

I have received the tactics from NiQil - but that's it so far.

Ok, I am confused. Am I running the Dronnar vs Monster fight or is Mitza? Pairing has me listed as one fight and battles thread has me listed as the other.
Zevox

12-28-06, 11:29 AM
*frowns* Odd. The character thread has Macbrea as running Annalina vs Faelto, but the battles thread has Iced. Normally the character thread is the more up-to-date one, but I suppose its best to double check, so...

@ Cat - Which of those is correct?

Zevox
Macbrea

12-28-06, 11:32 AM
Sent a quick PM off to cat. I am not sure which I am running at this point. I posted the fight thread for Dronnar already. With monster rolled. He really would rather get another monster. :P
TelinArtho

12-28-06, 11:35 AM
It looks to me like Cat reassigned a few fights based on Iced being the ql for Jonathon Raven - but no one can be sure. I'll resend Faelto's tactics - this time to MacBrea - pending the resolution of the issue (since I sent them to Iced last night).

Annalina Vale (Zevox) vs. Faelto (TelinArtho) : Macbrea [City]

Fight according to cat. So, Will clear out my monster fight for Dronnar. He didn't want to fight 3 Half-Celestial Otyughs anyways.
MitzaVolchenko

12-28-06, 12:38 PM
Alright, Cat needs to knock it off. I already have half of the tactics for the vs. fight. Macbrea, run the monster. You already rolled it.

Edit PM sent to Cat, Macbrea, Pitlords to try and sort this out.

@Rith I still have your tactics and will forward them as needed.

@Sutro and TheMagister: waiting for your tactics.
TelinArtho

12-28-06, 04:13 PM
I don't know why you are using a +4 to attack instead of a +5 throughout the fight - but it should've been a +5 (or +7 on a charge). EDIT - on further investigation, it looks like you used different values in a number of different situations. I didn't see any misses that would've been hits or hits that should've been misses though.

That said, the AoO should have been trips as well - which means that quite a few of those misses on AoO should have been hits to trip - meaning my opponent might have been downed a bit before that. It is up to him if he wants the fight edited though.

@rowsdower - just as a small note about your tactics, so you don't count on it in the future - you cannot share spells that you do not cast from memory. So scrolls, powerstones, potions, tattoos, staves, dorjes, wands, psicrowns, even psi-like and spell-like abilities can not be shared.
UserNamer

12-28-06, 04:28 PM
But that wouldn't change the result, it would just make it easier for you to win, so I don't see no point in editing.
Zevox

12-28-06, 05:14 PM

No, they don't - nothing on the plains blocks LoS at all. The borders of three of the boxes are, per the map description, low obstacles that only provide cover to medium or smaller creatures. Not even crouching breaks LoS using those.

Just FYI, bats aren't blind, either in D&D or in the real world.

Also, Kai is only AC 12 when prone, so the fight would have ended one stroke earlier.

Some of the scroll caster levels are off in the fight summary (E. Retreat and Enlarge Person).

Aside from the summary, there's clearly no reason to correct.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I have tactics for Dudael and Valen. Hirumajoe also sent tactics for Poe, since McJarvis is apparently MIA. I'm beginning the fight now, although I won't likely get far right now. I'll wait until I'm done with that fight before starting on Reks vs. Sabra, which means that Horseman has some extra time to get tactics in. (Note, Horseman, that I'm doing you a favor; Reks has no defaults, so if I don't have tactics for him in two hours, I could have had him forfeit.)

Bats: Okay, I seem to recall there being some mention of that around here in the past (with relation to summoned swarms I think), but I'll take your word for it.

AC: Last I checked, being prone only incurred a -4 penalty vs melee attacks. His normal AC was 20, so thats 16. Wheres the other -4 coming from?

Scrolls: Huh - could've sworn yours were all CL 2nd when I checked. Oh well - summary fixed.

That was Manzarf vs Drac, I think. A long time ago. The consensus was that bats can see normally in daylight, if I recall correctly. The fact that they are nocturnal and operate with an echolocater is ignored. :) The fight never got edited, though, and Begferdeth vanished some time after that.

@ The_First_Horseman - I am still awaiting tactics for Rinn Silverbeard (vs Wildfire). Technically the deadline for tactics has passed, but since I suspect I'll have enough time to run this even if I don't do anything with it today I'm willing to wait a while longer if need be. Do make sure to get those in soon, though.

Sybil vs Maya is done.
No it is not done.

You may now please run it with the boxes I stated, and without surrendering. I chose those start locations because it forces her to move around cover obstacles and not take straight moves. Please note that the bow is not dropped and is not destroyed (check later comments), nor is the whip destroyed. One carries extra weapons to be able to continue a fight. I am happy to play archery games when I am a rapid/point blank character. Note that modifiers on my attack are wrong, though round 9 as written it does not matter.

There is no reason to end bard song until I cast. If you play this out properly and she turns it into an archery contest, I stay with cover and shoot her down. My ranged skill is superior.

Though not in my tactics, there is a wand of MM that is useable. I didn't say not to use it, but I understand that I didn't say to use it either. I *never* surrender. I don't care if you stand around picking up her arrows and returning them.

My opponent wanted to charge in and sunder my bow, not my sword. Which means that we move to having a ranged combat with me only having a few spells and a wand. Please try again.

Maya also needs a ride check when the horse falls asleep. Horses do sleep laying down as well, but inthe logic here it is moving and falls asleep it falls over.

At the least Maya needs to break up some arrows.

Well, wasn't expecting that. Makes things easier on you though I suppose :) .

@Zevox - another neat character. That paladin of tyranny looks pretty cool. That harm touch is like an insta-kill at higher levels. :plotting:
Actually, his deadly touch probably won't see much use past level 4. Hes never taking another Paladin of Tyranny level (in fact, he can't), so it'll always only do 2x charisma damage. Though its a nice incentive to try a straight Paladin of Tyranny/Slaughter sometime in the far future, the real reason he has that class is so I could have the Divine Grace feature and still RP him the way I want.

I'm a bit confused here, there must be something I don't see.

The starting box issue is my mistake - I understood from your tactics that you wanted to be as far as possible. I am sorry about that. :embarrass I can always edit it, but what would it change? Then Maya starts closer an can base you even faster. Once again I should've just run the tactics according to the letter, and not mind about things I suspect might be typos. Because this is what happened here.

Your tactics asked to rapid shoot even with range penalties, so that's why I stopped the singing. I understood that you wanted to take a shot and hope for an auto-hit. I don't know if you have noticed, but singing takes a standard action every round - so no shooting and singing.

Your opponent sundered your bow, not your sword. At any point you didn't have the sword in hand. You started with the bow, kept shooting, casted the spells and then your opponent sundered your bow. (WAIT, I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN. That's a typo - it should say bow. :embarrass Like I pointed out, at any point you didn't draw your sword.)

After that I did the disarm attempt, wich failed. At that point your opponent wanted to move away from you and keep away with her superior speed. I understand the confusion, because of the typo I did on the sundering.

I can keep up fighting with the MM wand, that's no problem, and I can roll the ride check (but it's only DC5 - stay in saddle, which is an auto-pass with Maya's modifier of +11). That's actually the reason I had you surrender, there was no hint about it in the tactics and these things can alway be addressed here - and taken care of.

Considering these things, I can continue the fight with the MM wand - that's actually quite a good shot to win. The other issues seem like they wouldn't change the fight, so I hope you don't feel they need to be edited in now that I have answered your concerns. I am really sorry about the wrong improvisation with the starting boxes, but I still feel that it didn't harm you in the fight.

I am really sorry about the wrong improvisation with the starting boxes, but I still feel that it didn't harm you in the fight.
Singing only requires a standard action to start, not to keep going each round. The only bard songs that require actions to maintain them each round are those that say they require concentration. If every bard song took a standard action to use, the class feature would be pretty useless. Below is the relevant text with those songs that require concentration having the passages that say that highlighted. If a bard song does not say that it requires concentration, then it doesn't, and can be maintained with no actions required beyond the initial standard action to begin.

Bardic Music: Once per day per bard level, a bard can use his song or poetics to produce magical effects on those around him (usually including himself, if desired). While these abilities fall under the category of bardic music and the descriptions discuss singing or playing instruments, they can all be activated by reciting poetry, chanting, singing lyrical songs, singing melodies, whistling, playing an instrument, or playing an instrument in combination with some spoken performance. Each ability requires both a minimum bard level and a minimum number of ranks in the Perform skill to qualify; if a bard does not have the required number of ranks in at least one Perform skill, he does not gain the bardic music ability until he acquires the needed ranks.
Starting a bardic music effect is a standard action. Some bardic music abilities require concentration, which means the bard must take a standard action each round to maintain the ability. Even while using bardic music that doesn’t require concentration, a bard cannot cast spells, activate magic items by spell completion (such as scrolls), or activate magic items by magic word (such as wands). Just as for casting a spell with a verbal component, a deaf bard has a 20% chance to fail when attempting to use bardic music. If he fails, the attempt still counts against his daily limit.
Countersong (Su): A bard with 3 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use his music or poetics to counter magical effects that depend on sound (but not spells that simply have verbal components). Each round of the countersong, he makes a Perform check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself ) that is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use the bard’s Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the countersong is already under the effect of a noninstantaneous sonic or language-dependent magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it hears the countersong, but it must use the bard’s Perform check result for the save. Countersong has no effect against effects that don’t allow saves. The bard may keep up the countersong for 10 rounds.
Fascinate (Sp): A bard with 3 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use his music or poetics to cause one or more creatures to become fascinated with him. Each creature to be fascinated must be within 90 feet, able to see and hear the bard, and able to pay attention to him. The bard must also be able to see the creature. The distraction of a nearby combat or other dangers prevents the ability from working. For every three levels a bard attains beyond 1st, he can target one additional creature with a single use of this ability.
To use the ability, a bard makes a Perform check. His check result is the DC for each affected creature’s Will save against the effect. If a creature’s saving throw succeeds, the bard cannot attempt to fascinate that creature again for 24 hours. If its saving throw fails, the creature sits quietly and listens to the song, taking no other actions, for as long as the bard continues to play and concentrate (up to a maximum of 1 round per bard level). While fascinated, a target takes a –4 penalty on skill checks made as reactions, such as Listen and Spot checks. Any potential threat requires the bard to make another Perform check and allows the creature a new saving throw against a DC equal to the new Perform check result.
Any obvious threat, such as someone drawing a weapon, casting a spell, or aiming a ranged weapon at the target, automatically breaks the effect. Fascinate is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting ability.
Inspire Courage (Su): A bard with 3 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use song or poetics to inspire courage in his allies (including himself ), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to hear the bard sing. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the bard sing and for 5 rounds thereafter. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 morale bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 8th level, and every six bard levels thereafter, this bonus increases by 1 (+2 at 8th, +3 at 14th, and +4 at 20th). Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability.
Inspire Competence (Su): A bard of 3rd level or higher with 6 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use his music or poetics to help an ally succeed at a task. The ally must be within 30 feet and able to see and hear the bard. The bard must also be able to see the ally.
The ally gets a +2 competence bonus on skill checks with a particular skill as long as he or she continues to hear the bard’s music. Certain uses of this ability are infeasible. The effect lasts as long as the bard concentrates, up to a maximum of 2 minutes. A bard can’t inspire competence in himself. Inspire competence is a mind-affecting ability.
Suggestion (Sp): A bard of 6th level or higher with 9 or more ranks in a Perform skill can make a suggestion (as the spell) to a creature that he has already fascinated (see above). Using this ability does not break the bard’s concentration on the fascinate effect, nor does it allow a second saving throw against the fascinate effect.
Making a suggestion doesn’t count against a bard’s daily limit on bardic music performances. A Will saving throw (DC 10 + 1/2 bard’s level + bard’s Cha modifier) negates the effect. This ability affects only a single creature (but see mass suggestion, below). Suggestion is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting, language dependent ability.
Inspire Greatness (Su): A bard of 9th level or higher with 12 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use music or poetics to inspire greatness in himself or a single willing ally within 30 feet, granting him or her extra fighting capability. For every three levels a bard attains beyond 9th, he can target one additional ally with a single use of this ability (two at 12th level, three at 15th, four at 18th). To inspire greatness, a bard must sing and an ally must hear him sing. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the bard sing and for 5 rounds thereafter. A creature inspired with greatness gains 2 bonus Hit Dice (d10s), the commensurate number of temporary hit points (apply the target’s Constitution modifier, if any, to these bonus Hit Dice), a +2 competence bonus on attack rolls, and a +1 competence bonus on Fortitude saves. The bonus Hit Dice count as regular Hit Dice for determining the effect of spells that are Hit Dice dependant. Inspire greatness is a mind-affecting ability.
Song of Freedom (Sp): A bard of 12th level or higher with 15 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use music or poetics to create an effect equivalent to the break enchantment spell (caster level equals the character’s bard level). Using this ability requires 1 minute of uninterrupted concentration and music, and it functions on a single target within 30 feet. A bard can’t use song of freedom on himself.
Inspire Heroics (Su): A bard of 15th level or higher with 18 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use music or poetics to inspire tremendous heroism in himself or a single willing ally within 30 feet. For every three bard levels the character attains beyond 15th, he can inspire heroics in one additional creature. To inspire heroics, a bard must sing and an ally must hear the bard sing for a full round. A creature so inspired gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws and a +4 dodge bonus to AC. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the bard sing and for up to 5 rounds thereafter. Inspire heroics is a mind-affecting ability.
Mass Suggestion (Sp): This ability functions like suggestion, above, except that a bard of 18th level or higher with 21 or more ranks in a Perform skill can make the suggestion simultaneously to any number of creatures that he has already fascinated (see above). Mass suggestion is an enchantment (compulsion), mind-affecting, language-dependent ability.

No problem, hon. However note that it is possible for her to run out of bolt and be forced back into melee as trying to hit me behind cover becomes problematic. Basing sooner means song lasts longer into fighting rounds and force screen does the same. I unfortunately did edit out my default tactics section which says use wands and anything else ya like on the sheet. Sybil *never* surrenders. Heck, her first fight was one of those silly ECL 3 FFA's and she jsut said to heck with it and went off charging around with rapier in hand shouting witty comments. The original AD&D 2nd Ed version of Sybil was a swashbuckler :P

Soft Fall

You can react instantly to try to take no damage when you fall off a mount—when it is killed or when it falls, for example. If you fail your Ride check, you take 1d6 points of falling damage. This usage does not take an action.

Fast Mount or Dismount

You can attempt to mount or dismount from a mount of up to one size category larger than yourself as a free action, provided that you still have a move action available that round. If you fail the Ride check, mounting or dismounting is a move action. You can’t use fast mount or dismount on a mount more than one size category larger than yourself.

When the horse goes down, she not only has to wake it but it has to stand up and she has to remount. The DC's are 15 and 20 respectively. Not autosuccess.

All fights done.

Hell no, Fight is not done!!!

Rubicanti vs. Durin
...can't stay this way.

My Tactics clearly asumed that he will do the obvious: Stay at range and shoot me. I told you, how to beat this tactic, you ignore it and tell me I surrender.

Sure, I said, stay down if he has a bow. Because Rubicanti has no sling ... at least not among his ranged attacks. I did not saw it in his equipment section. And while this is a little my fault it's also enough of his fault to interprete the consequences favorable for me: I'm not asking to forbit the use, because it's no attack but you should include the stealthy sling in the anti-bow tactic of my tactics and wait it out, too. I made the idea behind my tactics obvious, he did not beat them by skill but by haveing a very misleading sheet -> adjust them, that they work again.

So: Have him pepper at me all his peebles and all his arrows, and then, let's melee.

Mathematicly, that fight has very little chance of not going to melee.

40 arrows 1d20+7 vs AC 24 with 20% concealment.

Hit 15% of time missiing 3% of those = 12% of 40 hit.

40 x .12 = 5 hits of 4.5hp per shot ~ 22.5 damage.

He should have brought more arrows.

Noko made the same mistake in her fight 1 - after this, I've stocked up to about 100 (well, "as much as I can fly with").
My latest arching character Balrog is "a bit" stonger and carries 480 arrows - at his damage hopefully a lifetime supply. ;)

Umm... Where are the actual spot checks by the Elven fighter/ranger? Even with a -40 to his check, Poe has a +7 modifier to hiding. Thats not an auto spot.

Unless that -40 modifier applies retroactively to the snipe/hide check made earlier? Which would be very odd...

At which point, Poe just needs to run away for 4 rounds, or even cast Obscuring mist to break LOS. *Shrug*. Nevermind, being blinded means no scrolls. Although I'd like to hit McJarvis over the head for not including his Assassin spells, which could include an Obscuring Mist. He still in princple could ascend at quarter speed for no Hide penalty and wait the Glitterdust out.

P.S. I think the improvisation was fine. Too bad Valen couldn't make the 50/50 odds on breaking that darn bow... In retrospect, looking at the to hit rolls, I should have gone defensive buffing for the 26 AC versus the Elf. Oh well. Live and learn.

If I wanted to be a jerk about it, I could suggest that Rubi should be hiding and firing as an improvisation.

Heck, I'm tempted to force the issue and MAKE Usernamer fire all of those sling bullets (all they cost Rubi is time to re-collect them) and hope for natural 20s (every hp is one I don't have to take away in melee).

Regardless, I think Rubi has a good shot in melee; his to-hit is great for a monk, and the damage is also fairly heavy. He also has that lovely monk touch AC to defend against the trip. {shrug}

I would ask that Usernamer just roll 27 more sling shots looking for natural 20s. Every little bit helps when you're a monk.

I figured that since Poe attacked that round, then yes, the sniping penalty would still apply (until he used a move to re-hide in a subsequent round). That could be up for debate, of course. Can you hide while blind?

In any event, I rolled the round 8 Hide/Spot check, and Lithania won. That pretty much ends things.

Fair enough.

I guess by core rules, you're right. The sniping penalty hangs around the entire round, even if the moment of fire already passed awhile back (which is presumably when you were most likely to be seen). Which means it would have been -13 versus +8? minus distance penalty. I.e. a 1 in 400 chance.

Similarly, by core rules, the hide skill doesn't seem to care if you can even sense your surroundings or not. You just need the skill and a place to hide (even if you're not aware of the place to hide? Odd).

Thanks for the doing the roll. And thanks for running the fight!

Quick question for scrolls with spells that have saves:

What modifier do they use for the DC? The caster's casting stat (i.e Int for a wizard) at time of use or something else? I seem vaguely remember the modifier being the minimum necessary to cast a spell of that level, but I can't seem to find anything like that in the SRD at the moment.

Well, Maya had the possibility to take the fight to the open. She can always shoot from far and then Sybil would be able to do nothing offensive, and at some point deemed delaying the fight. So the fight takes place in the open.

Look, I'm not against pitlord improvisation, no way. But surely you see my point of view also - there needs to be a line somewhere. That's the reason we send tactics, so that our abilities are tested in two ways. The first thing is to create a solid build, and the second is to find the best tactic against the other player. If the tactics don't work, the pitlord must step in, I agree with that definitely. But at some point it isn't anymore aboout improvising the tactics, but actually the pitlord starts to play the character. And that on the other hand isn't fair to the other player, especially if the other players tactics are working well.

To make it short - every pitlord has their limit on how much they feel they can improvise, and this was close to mine. Thank you for reading this far, I sometimes have a bad habit of preaching... :)

I do have an issue with the fight - when Farig succeeds in her strength check - she gets to move at half her speed that round. That's one of the dumber rules in the PHB, but Telin is right. You have to read the description of the Entangle spell carefully to find it. Lemme see...

<snip>
The creature can break free and move half its normal speed by using a full-round action to make a DC 20 Strength check or a DC 20 Escape Artist check.<snip>

Like I said, a dumb rule. Why not make it a standard action to Str check or Escape Artist? I dunno. They were smokin' the orange stuff that grows behind the toilet, I think.

Just FYI, the ten-round penalty doesn't technically apply here, since they're both actively seeking. You can always "arbitrarily" say that the two characters just happen to look for each other in the correct direction.

The timing is also off: if your readied action goes off in response to your own action, there's no change (you now go immediately before yourself...). This is potentially fight-affecting.

Finally, the round 17 Ego Whip does need to be rolled: on a successful save and a damage roll of 1, Featylec takes 0 damage.

(I'm only asking b/c this is my last night with internet access, so if they're done tomorrow, I'll have to {sigh} use the Public Library computer to check on their progress/update sheets. And that's a pain in the neck.)

Thanks.
Comment: Sorry, I did not mention the thing with the half damage against objects before. Admidded, it might even be questionable but I say, that (unless there is an official ruling otherwise) that since the objects still have hardness (even if it's 0) they still cound as objects for damaging purpose.Sounds good to me. I'm suprised I forgot the half damage thing myself.Furthermore, I really don't know, why you did not want to go for melee anyway. With that AC and that damage reduction, they did not have the slightest chance. To be honest, this might be the 3rd non caster character I've played. Still a bit squeemish about going toe to toe with things. Somehow I forgot I had damage reduction; and my bow does the most damage.

It is quite powerful. But it still isn't going to let spells or powers that specifically require line of sight (like Control Body) to still work. It's more like you have a line of touch, really. =X

If you want to defeat Touchsight, you basically need to have some way of blocking line of effect. Maybe Web or Ectoplasmic Cocoon?

Even if you block LoE, you can't damage them, which isn't very conducive to victory.

The power is too effective. There's no counter to it except some things that are VERY esoteric and mostly unavailable. The power as written is just really wrong.

Even Steadfast Perception is level 4, and it only provides immunity to illusions and a +6 to spot, not an autospot.

Nah, that makes it only a bit better ... a bit on top of the rest. Ego whip is overpowered ... specificly in the Coco, where you have no team, that wastes it's efforts on killing your target's hit points at the time you kill it's Cha and where lot'S of targets only have cha 8 ... and you know it.

In my experience, the number of Ego Whips necessary to do 8 damage is usually 4 or 5, though. That's a big chunk of power points. Compare it with a 2nd-level spell like Scorching Ray -- 4 or 5 of those are usually enough to kill someone, too!

Rauul Darkstar (Rauul) vs Blizzard (NiQil) is up.

As to Ego whip - it just means that if you do use Cha as a dump stat that someone might (will) use it against you.

The same could be done with people who use Con as a dump stat. The only difference is that there are fewer people to dump the latter and many who dump the former.

All that can be said about Ego whip is that if you dump it - someone should get you for it. If you dump Str, someone should get you with Str poison; Wis - will save spells; Int - Int Poison?

Honestly, intelligence is probably the only reasonable dump stat for the CoCo, but most poeple don't use it (myself included) since skill points can make a big difference to some characters.

But Scorching Ray has stuff that can lower the damage. Ego whip really only has a will save, and most builds here dump stat Charisma which only makes it better.

If you don't like Scorching Ray, substitute Ghoul Touch. Or Blindness. Or Hideous Laughter. I'd say they're all as good or better than Ego Whip, especially considering that Ego Whip is an all-or-nothing effect -- if you lower your enemy's Cha to 1 and then run out of power points, you've wasted your time, whereas if you were doing HP damage (with Energy Missile, say) then you can still add more HP damage on top of it.

I'm not saying that Ego Whip is a weak power in the Core Coliseum; I've used it with some success with my character Kilpquabjeg, for instance. I'm just objecting to calling it "overpowered [specifically] in the CoCo". At low levels, you won't be able to do 4 or 5 Ego Whips unless you've hoarded your power points for the third fight of your cycle (as Kilp did). And at higher levels there are other save-or-die powers at your disposal.

Personally, I think Brain Lock and Control Body are much bigger offenders than Ego Whip!
Macbrea

01-02-07, 11:25 AM
It is not overpowered. Everyone made a character with a 36 pt buy. There is no excuse to have an 9 or lower charisma on a character in CoCo. Yes, if you design a character with a glass jaw occationally someone will hit you in it.

To say the power is overpowered is silly. Technically, most powers are overpowered for the arena. They are designed fight that include allies and more then one combatant.

1. Can someone with Scorn Earth be tripped?
2. What happens when someone with Scorn earth steps off of a ledge? Can the elocator choose to remain floating at the current elevation or choose to float down to 1 foot above the ground? Can the elocator "fall"? Does the elocator need to make a jump check/tumble check to fall safely?

I'm going to make a decision on it - but if there's been some clarification on it - please do point it out to me...

Given the fact that Scorn Earth gives you a movement rate adjustment "if" the Elocator is more than 1 foot off the ground with no mention of how the Elocator got there, I'd say that yeah, the Elocator can remain floating. It really looks like Scorn Earth turns into a Levitate effect with a 10 feet of movement restriction once the Elocator is higher in the air.

Quick questions: Brush provides cover on the forest map, correct? Which means as long as some brush is between the two characters, there is cover?

Secondly, if someone moves up into an adjacent brush spot, and successfully made the MS and Hide checks all the way there, is the first attack they make on the opponent as if from an invisible attacker? Or are they just considered flat-footed? Or none of the above?

Thirdly, if there's a ready action on the part of the surprised party, does that go off before or after the hidden attacker?? And if it goes after, does that mean the hidden attacker's initiative is still earlier than the person who took the readied action?
Macbrea

The brush of the forest provides concealment. Concealment is 20% miss chance an allows hiding.

If they made all of their MS and Hide vs their opponent. Then their opponent is denied dexterity.

In which case their attack has to go off before the readied action, which would make the readied action initiative later. Ok, that's my interpretation then.

Okay - apparently MacBrea finished the fight between Anna and Faelto and I either missed the post here or he didn't say it was done...

Anyway - I've got a bit of a few points about it:

1. As pointed out in my tactics, Sauria is not allowed to fight while I am mounted, since Sauria is a heavy horse, and heavy horses cannot fight while someone mounts them.

2. Cat's grace and Bull's strength were not to be shared - since they would share from the same pool of points.

3. In round 11, when Faelto hits with the charge, the damage should have been 2d8+10 - since Faelto has spirited charge. However, I'm not sure if the attack actually hit - since I believe Lacarme's touch AC is 17, not 16.

Anyway - since nothing here actually changes anything in my favor - thanks for the run.

Actually, your slightly wrong on this one.

These animals are similar to heavy horses but are trained and bred for strength and aggression. A heavy warhorse can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

A horse not trained for war does not normally use its hooves to attack. Its hoof attack is treated as a secondary attack and adds only half the horse’s Strength bonus to damage. (These secondary attacks are noted with an asterisk in the Attack and Full Attack entries for the heavy horse and the light horse.)

You have trained Sauria with the Combat riding package as per the CoCo rules. So, Sauria is trained for war. As a result her attacks count as primary attacks.
TelinArtho

01-02-07, 06:27 PM
I wasn't disagreeing with the attack bonus for Sauria - but merely whether Sauria may attack while Faelto is mounted. What you have quoted is the text for the Heavy Warhorse. The heavy horse states the following:

The statistics presented here describe large breeds of working horses such as Clydesdales. These animals are usually ready for heavy work by age three. A heavy horse cannot fight while carrying a rider.

Note that there's no exception for a heavy horse trained for war here.

I agree with the above interpretation.

@MitzaVolchenko in regards to the Jar-red, Fyhir and Zwei fight:

Unfortunately, on round 11, as far as I understand it, Jar-red gets to act before Zwei. She never has a chance to take the standard action necessary to take the total defense action.

Its all due to the bizarre case of Zwei having a ready action, but failing her spot and listen checks, so Jar-red gets to attack her without her dex. If she's flat footed relative to Jar-red, she obviously can't act. Thus she takes the readied action after Jar-red's initiative. Thus her initiative moves up, but is still behind Jar-red, and Jar-red makes his full attack before she gets her next turn. I didn't see any other way to do that and be true to the tactics of readying an ambush.

Unfortunately for Zwei, Jar-red happens to be better at doing the ambush thing on the move...

@Telin:

Isn't the battlesong duet supposed to get ECL4 rewards not divided by 2?

So it would be:

Both Cupid & Tessero receive 1,200xp/gp - (1,200*6.25%)= 1,125 xp/gp
TelinArtho

01-03-07, 11:52 AM
I frankly don't know what to do with the rewards, but looking again, I'm pretty sure I've got it wrong. I think you have the numbers right - just not with the right reasoning.

If I treat each character as an ECL4 and your opponent as an ECL6, then you each get half of the ECL6 reward while he gets rewards from 2x ECL4:

So 2400xp/2 = 1200xp - 6.25% = 1125xp/gp.
He gains 900xp*2/3 (for losing) = 600xp + 6.25% = 637xp/707gp.

I'll update it presently.

Edit - fixed.

I forgot to respond to this.

Essentially - yes. With Valek's speed at the super speed of 65 - he had no problem moving around so that Tessero would no longer be obscuring the way.

When Rubi's fully buffed, he's a pretty mean kid.

He manifests Hammer and touches at +10 for 1d8+1, and then flurries for two rounds at +8/+8 for 1d6+1d8+1 damage each, and his fully buffed AC is what...25? 27? He's pretty mean.

Plus he has the option of pulling back (with tumble and speed) to re-apply Vigor. Cutting a corner on the forest map is pretty easy, and the undergrowth prevents charges.

{shrug}
I liked my chances. Barring an axe-crit, I'm pretty sure he'd pull out the slugfest.

Regardless, I'm not happy with how it turned out either (mostly because Usernamer actually got a credit for that "fight").

Still, if it gets rerun, I want my 47 shots with my sling before melee. Every HP you lose before melee is one less charge off of my dorjes. :)

I'll send a PM to pitlords and see about ganking Usernamer's credit and getting the fight re-assigned. It might not be too late.
