News and Whatnot

New Rulings - Courtroom

The Madness domain's bonus to wisdom applies to all thing in spellcasting- not just spell save DCs and bonus spells.
It takes a standard action to call an animal into the wondrous item, "Bag of Tricks". This may be done over any distance.
Animals from the wondrous item "Bag of Tricks" are treated as summoned animals for the purposes of "Protection from [Law/Chaos/Evil/Good]" spells.
Psicrystals can not use the power "Synesthete" due to a lack of face.
Touchsight can not detect a creature with the "Cerebral Blind" ability from the Slayer prestige class.

The Council Decisions/Revelations

Huan apparantley has stepped up to take the newspaper job. We'll see how that unfolds in the weeks to come...
The rules thread is currently being revamped. See the council for more details.
The Credit system is still under review. If you have any strong opinions on the credit system, you should go and leave some input. Especially since this will likely be decided on because...
Two new elders have arrived- CrazyArtificer and Hirumajoe. They are replacements for Macbrea and Vath.
The Fights of the Week Thread will from now on contain updates to what is happening in the Council and Courtroom.
We need/desire a newspaper. Anyone who wants to try their hand at writing stories about Gladius should step up for the job.

Current Topics

Spell Resistance discussions have been renewed- more specifically whether monsters/PC's always improve SR with increased hit dice. Update: These are still going on, and several elders have spoken in support of not advancing SR with hd unless it is specifically said to do so.
There is some debate of what kinds of situations the "Madness" domain helps you and hurts you.

Check out the Courtroom and Council to join in all the fun!

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM MindWandererB Elder TelinArtho will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline since GM MindWandererB is absent.
Link to pairings.
Make sure that your character is not in prison.

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help.
You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool (http://wormhole.ath.cx/coco/coco_dist.php) should suffice.
Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

Oh dear...sorry about that Telin. I'll work on the weekly news as soon as I get home from work. I just got in touch with some old professors of mine from my undergrad(I'm applying to grad schools) & in the excitement I completely forgot about CoCo...I didn't even set thorell to crafting duty. O_O

No problem dude - it happens.

Okay - pairings should be done. As always - watch the pairings post in the battles thread when I do the pairings. Also - be aware that they may change (though I usually provide notice in this thread - so if you read this far - keep reading...)

ZevoxOne of those is a hold over ... the other ...well puts 6 people on the map not counting mounts. You might have to talk someone into that one.

double yeah!
verren does not have to fight the alpha-strike abomination again, and lelenia got another target to talk to death instead of a dumb monster! :)

Ah well, monster fight it is then. At least Arden got a good map for it (well, for him anyway, probably not for the pitlord). With Istima I'm going to have to hope gets a foe that'll want to buff or that he can mop up fairly simply, because the Cavern is one of his least favorite maps.

Can someone with access to the actual DMG give me confirmation that Sir Lordrum's special mount is correct?

What I see is a level 6 paladin with a Dire Wolf that has been increase 2HD (as a level 6 paladin with a heavy warhorse). I guess I would expect that using the dire wolf would require some penalty to the levels (like the Druid using a better animal companion).

Sorry to hear that about Istima...

2 Elder Xorns.
Hm, actually, thats a pretty good match for Istima. A couple of buffs for rudimentary defense and readying a single power will likely do the trick. With no treasure for equipment, they really can't do anything about it, either. The only complication is that the arena lets them sneak up on me so easily.

ZEVOX - monster knowladge for arden is 2 Female medium bipeds - nothing relevant.
Figured as much. Gonna be tough to narrow it down, but at least Arden has all the buff time I could ask for.

If I am just wrong - let me know - thanks.

Bump - anyone?

02-27-08, 05:47 PM
Bump - anyone?
Dire Wolf Paladin mount at level 6 is in the 3.5 DMG (page 204). For the purposes of special abilities, they're treated as though level 6 were the first level on the Paladin list (so they won't get the next HD/str/etc bump until level 9 rather than level 8). Just like the Druid, except less drastic level disparity.

I dunno- I think I might have preferred to take the dire bat from that list :-O

Speaking of which, if you aren't familiar with the list, telin- Sir V qualifies for the dire bat(6), hippogriff(6), pegasus(7), and griffon(8) in terms of flying special mounts(level of paladin required).

I'd go with a Hippogriff myself. Those things are pretty dang good mounts at ECL 6 as-is, but with +2 HD and AC/str/etc boosts, they'd be beastly. And personally I think the Unicorn would've made a better non-flying mount than the Dire Wolf. Similar hp and attack/damage, better AC and speed, plus healing SLAs and free circle of protection from evil.

Well - they could attack from total cover of the ground - but you would also gain the total cover. In both cases - I think you both would have total concealment as well (since they'd be attacking via tremorsense - you'd be attacking via knowing a square where they attacked from).

That said - I'm not that evil with earth creatures. You should expect them to get cover though :)

Good to know. I had a way to force them to show themselves, but it entailed using a 700 gp expendable, so I'd rather not do that unless absolutely necessary. And I'm not worried about cover, since it won't matter with my plan.

MWB, I'm sorry to mess up the pairings, but Ralein didn't level last week. He has 13700 XP, 1300 short of level 6. This is likely to mess up a lot of the roster, and I'd be willing to fight Verren as it stands, since his HP is equal to my max damage, and I hit him on a 3. But the rewards would be messy for the pitlord, and it's an odd precedent.

To explain the sudden changes, Ralein finished his cycle and went shopping for Gloves of Dexterity, which added to a lot of his level-dependant stats.

He most certainly doesnt lack line of effect, but he lacks line of sight(big difference there). And you dont always need line of sight to target something. You still know exactly where you are so targeting yourself should be allowed.

Seems you are right.

AIMING A SPELL

You must make some choice about whom the spell is to affect or where the effect is to originate, depending on the type of spell. The next entry in a spell description defines the spell’s target (or targets), its effect, or its area, as appropriate.

Target or Targets: Some spells have a target or targets. You cast these spells on creatures or objects, as defined by the spell itself. You must be able to see or touch the target, and you must specifically choose that target. You do not have to select your target until you finish casting the spell.

1) why did verren jump down to the center without any spotted opponent? that's clearly against everything i was asking for... i was waiting - he should come to me - i never asked to move before he comes close, which was a given.

2) it was true strikes+arrows before OR scorching rays after he closes in a second time. its clearly no use to improve touch attacks even further with true strikes (this is ridiculous!)

also, all scorching rays would be already +8 (due to pbs), and +1 damage.

Going from memory here - but if i recall correcly - you wanted to look For him but at the same time you ddint want to get 2 Near to him - You saw him going towards the columns and then disappear - and you couldnt spot him from where you were - i could have gone over the edge south and east to spot him but that would hav ebrough you closer to him and pretty certinly into chareg range at some point, so the only way to spot him which were more or less per your tactics was going down.

About true Strike - i might have misunderstood on it - i can alter the first to be true strike + Psi shot and the rest scorching rays - i dont think it will actually matter since durgulzur ends the fight on close to 40 HP.

Note - originally i also forgot to have you refocus between shots (full round action for you) and 50% chance - an Edit will have to do that also.

Durz's cycle was incomplete since he spesified to go on you when he can do charge or move+attack, About looking - i dont agree - you said "look for durz" - since you dont actually have to DO anything to find him if he's visible from that area if you say look it means Go and look.

@Crazyartificer: Thanks for the corrections and rewards. Dumb question though, why is Altair's crystal shard shot in round 4 a miss? I keep going over the numbers, but they don't seem to make sense to me.

Altair rolls a 13 + 5 = 18.

Korwald's base touch AC is 10 + 1 Dex + 1 Insight = 12.

Korwald successfully rides for cover, gaining a +4 cover bonus to AC.

12 + 4 = 16 < 18. This seems to me it should have hit. Or is there some other penalty I'm failing to take account of?

Not necessary to correct, but I'd just like to know. Thanks again.
CrazyArtificer

03-02-08, 12:24 PM
Well, I've always thought that when someone rides for cover he gets total cover.
I may be wrong, though.
Hirumajoe

03-02-08, 04:15 PM
Oh dear no. That would make riding for cover the most broken free action in the game...

Cover

You can react instantly to drop down and hang alongside your mount, using it as cover. You can’t attack or cast spells while using your mount as cover. If you fail your Ride check, you don’t get the cover benefit. This usage does not take an action.

It doesn't list total cover, just cover. What effectively happens is you use your horse for soft cover, that just happens to be effective against melee attacks.

Creatures, even your enemies, can provide you with cover against ranged attacks, giving you a +4 bonus to AC. However, such soft cover provides no bonus on Reflex saves, nor does soft cover allow you to make a Hide check.

To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target’s square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC).

Edit: Although, does your horse actually provide "cover" or "soft cover". I think I've normally seen at it as "cover", but now that I think about it, soft cover makes more sense. It explicitly says you use the mount for cover. That seems to be the definition of soft cover. If its the full cover, then stealthy characters can hide while mounted anywhere, even on an invisible horse... *Blink, Blink*.
Or use it for a +2 on reflex saves.

well, i rerolled 3d10. you did lots of damage on the 3d8, so he would be more alive on d10s - won't change now unless you find other things to change.

No, thanks.
Congrats to Orgauth :)

EDIT: now that I think about it.. could the controlled object flank with me in the final attack? That way it should hit (19+2=21) and kill Orgauth

EDIT 2: I had a look at the SRD. It says nothing about not threatening an area when concentrating on a spell, and the power says that the object animates and gets a slam attack. I think it should be able to flank.

Ralein vs. Xorns is up. Unfortunately the poor xorns were unable to win a good meal. They'll be kept malnourished until they start winning.

Thanks for the run. This doesn't change anything, but Ralein redraws his mind blade as a free action, so he can step away, throw, redraw and reset Psychic Strike all in one round. Any rolls that missed in melee would've missed anyway. It's just for future notice.

And after all the roster shenanigans, Ralein finally levels to 6th, so MWB doesn't need to move him back down.

i see 2 problems with this:

a) it might be able to flank, but the srd says nothing about it's reach, which is a bit problematic in its own right (i assumed reach 0 since you wanted to animate a tiny object, but might be 5 as well) => reach 0 could not flank, reach 5 could. this should go to the courtroom if you want to take on that tactic more often.

b) you'd need to have a weapon drawn to flank, which you did not specify. with a dagger in hand, you'd also have gotten an AoO against Orgauths bat entering your square.

I wondered about that but reseting Psychic Strike is a move action. I know you don't actually move but it seems to me you shouldn't be able to take a 5-foot step as well.

Ok. I'll keep that in mind for the future.

Only actual movement prevents 5' steps, not move actions. You can do as many move actions as you want - draw or sheath an item, mount a horse, reload a crossbow, stand up, etc etc - and still 5' step, you just can't both move through spaces in the normal sense and 5' step in the same round.

You can take a 5ft step if you don't use your move action to 'move'
Same thing w/ taking a 5ft step and a full attack.

@dulsi: if you look at orgauths fight, that's exactly what i had varuxor do once tripped. - stand up, 5ft step away, manifest.
If you move no actual distance in a round (commonly because you have swapped your move for one or more equivalent actions), you can take one 5-foot step either before, during, or after the action.

and, i finally found some remains of move-equivalent actions! ;)

Wow, I completely overestimated the monsters with my faulty assumptions.
I thought they got an additional attack on full-attacks for some reason and that the boar was actually leveled from what was listed in the SRD instead of just being a level 2 monster in it's own right.

Then again, those rolls didn't hurt either.

Eh, live and learn. Better now, than to think that some dragon or something along the way is infinitely stronger than it is and auto-concede. :P

just a couple of questions.

first as I read Lelenia's tatic she readys on spellcasting not rowier.

second Lelenia's tatic has her running away from rowier not shooting at it.

and third in round 5 when Lelenia shoots rowier still has mage armor since he hasn't left mineau and therefor the hit should be a miss.

well i'm presumably wrong on all tree but please tell me why

I acually had to make a few Judgement calls.. as you never said to use your wand, and she did specify to have her pet attack Rower when he got close, and wanted her per to stay close enough and yet move.. Rower was the danger So i made a Decision to have her Attack Rower when Mineau was out of range ..IF Mineau had been within range (75ft) he would of been the one getting shot at..

Once the Familiar leaves 5ft from the Caster, it looses Shared spells.. Nothing anywhere saids they come back when they get within 5ft again..

I Do follow tactics But i also Adjust them to be practical.. as Situations araise

It seems that there are alot of things that were overlooked on both sides. Everyone had the tactics of "wait for him to come within X feet, then do Y" - but no one had an approach path set up. I also go the idea that ya'll thought you'd start in the same starting squares- but I could be wrong on that one.

Most of all, though, was alot of damage rolls that just were not very good. Using a bow while minimized not only gave the rogue a -2 penalty to hit due to not having enough strength to use it, but also reduced that die size down to 1d4- and his rapier's damage to 1d2 (!). Then everyone seemed to want to do pot-shots across the map with massive penalties to hit. I suspect the reason the gun-user was doing well until he ran out of ammo is the lessened distance penalties.

edit-

the rolls may be found here: http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=2373

they get a little sloppy towards the end, but I believe everything is there.

Still, they are a bit diffent from normal smoke, as normal smoke never grants you more than 20% concealment.

BTW, Uranedal can hold breath for over 3 minutes, and 50% concealment rolls should apply on arrows targeting him.

(as an aside- I find it funny that you think the smoke being _more_ thick will translate to it not causing suffocation ;) )

Well, this isn't fight changing, so I know you're not looking for a re-write- but here's why you don't want one.

The problem with your tactics is you're just not agressive at all. You're waiting for your opponents to come within spell range- but throughout the entire fight they were _never_ in your spell range. You wouldn't have been able to fire your crossbow bolt- and they wouldn't have you as a viable target. On top of this- you can't even aim your spells properly without making listen checks to pinpoint enemies, since the cloud is proving concealment both in AND out. This, by strict reading of your tactics, would leave you sitting in the cloud for the entire fight. As you noted- once three minutes or so are up, you start suffocating. The fight was over 5 minutes(maybe 6? I don't remember), so you're still in that problem. The swarm was a cool idea- but you had no backup plan for if it failed, really.

On the other hand, if I were to hit you with a delay penalty, that would just mean "dispelling" the smoke. now we're back at where the fight stands now. I say all this not to be hurtful- but to encourage you to have some ideas floating around on how you're going to actively get your opponent in spell range. Waiting around doesn't always work- and in this case, it was to the detriment of everyone since it wore off everyone's buffs.

The problem is that I simply failed to edit Uranedal's memorized spell list and I really hadn't any suitable spell for attacking. (unless suiciding by going melee with a rogue)

What I wanted to clarify is how sticks works for future fights, as Uranedal really likes alchemical things :)

So, keeping talking in general, one can avoid the drawbacks by
1) To avoid Listen checks to pinpoint: Stepping close to the edge of the smoke when needed to hit, as concealment is "lighter"
2) To avoid suffocating: Stepping out of the fog, possibly on the side opposite to the enemy, take a deep breath, and reenter it.

Honestly? I think the following would have been better for you:

1) Running towards them for one round to try and close some distance.
2) Still using smoke sticks, but going for 20% concealment.
3) getting a scroll of cat's grace or something if you really think you're going to get into archery battles.

Also note that the smokesticks negate sneak attack completely, so you didn't need to fear the rogue as much as the gun-weilder with psionic shot.

But even better would be getting high mobility(mount spell, expeditious retreat, or fly eventually) & actually using your SoD spells & direct damage. Things like crossbows should be for after you run out of spells- not to soften an enemy before the spells ;)

Bulgar vs the Loyal Retainers is up here.

It looks to me that you didn't take into account Bulgar's far shot feat. In round 3, for instance, the distance according to the end round positions for Bulgar (96,96) and Thiel (7,92) is 455ft. You have it marked as a -8 penalty - it should be -4 (first range increment 0-160 ft, 2nd (-2) 165ft - 325ft, 3rd (-4) 330ft - 490ft). Since Bulgar missed the first shot by 2 and the 2nd shot by 3 - this could have a big difference (since Bulgar would be able to focus on other targets sooner).

@Telin: You're right on the ranges. I've rolled damage real quick for the 1st two arrows, 6 and 7 damage, for a total of 13. Unfortunately, combined with the 5 damage in round 4 only drops Thiel to disabled with exactly 0 hit points. The last hit (which was the last one before your blindness contingency kicked in) hits for 6, dropping her and leaving her at -6. Since there were no healing contingencies for Thiel, she bleeds to death in round 9.

Since she never got to range, this doesn't really change anything else in the fight, other than making the Thiel's Loyal Retainers lose Thiel.

So the fight result still stands. Will edit it in tonight.

I pretty much agree with your considerations, but Uranedal isn't the type of char which usually goes on archery battles.
It's been a contingent situation due to my lazyness in updating the sheet.
