Just make sure his subject line says "Ready for September 28th"...as long as that is done within the next (approx) 40 minutes, you should be ok.
Snommelp

09-28-05, 04:34 PM
Well, in that case, on with the show!
ToK and Oldmangray are hopefully updated as well, since I took the time to run their fight last night instead of sleeping...

You still have 10 minutes, as of the time of this posting. Pairings will be a little late today, sorry for any delays. Pressing last minute stuff here at the house, plus getting around with a broken neck isn't as easy as it sounds.

Pairings were due about 26 minutes ago. Please make sure Tellish the Infirm has all of your character sheets labeled "Ready for September 28th".

He had a bit of an accident; I'll let ToK give the details if he wants to.

On another note;
@Caterane and ToK
What's up with my credits? Three weeks ago I had 4 credits. I've been running 1 fight a week with 3 characters active. Two of those weeks my fights were taken over by other people, which should be -1 credit, leaving me at 2. I did join a campaign; but King Uther stated several times he was paying for my credits. Am I missing some credit expenditures somewhere? (Even with the -5 from the campaign, I should be at -3, not -4. If having your fight taken over by someone meets the criteria for an additional penalty, I should still be at 0 or -5, not -4!)

heh wish i had huans 100°s to spend... i could use some custom items...

and since crovax aparently is "cursed" anyone he happens to fight in the near future should respectfully have a decent will save. if they expect to have a chance at this. that is

on a side note. for RP purposes Crovax never made it off that island, so i would appreciate any stories written about him to be in a perspective of him being a slave in an "arena" setting inside the abbey he tried to flee. i will attempt to "actually make it to gladius" probably when he levels or some such nonsense

Also Talari should have a free activity up there. She is trying to train all 5000 bats to heel without a collar.

Cerebus is Pitlording for Pirotess (his own character). While I don't think he would cheat me out of a good clean fight, I think this would be a time I would deviate strongly from my norm and demand that he use Invisible Castle.

Also, Alexi and Daeren need a pitlord.

hey pitlords. wheres crovax? hes an ECL 7 character that says ready for 9/28 and died on his quest so he is eligible to fight in the arena this week. perhaps it would be appropriate if i replaced the drider... all things considered

3 level 6 characters is also EL 9.

I just rolled three individual fights on the Level 6 table and grouped them into one. Just lucky i guess that i rolled shocker lizards twice. heheh

Don't feel so bad. Two other monster fights i rolled 99%, 99%, 16% for and max cockatrices and the other guy i rolled 98%, 97%, 16% for 3 bugbears. Which means they are individual gladiators fighting two EL's above their own ECL.

All monster fights are done with online roller and verifiable.

Balbanes, I see the Arena management has paired us against each other. While they no doubt desire the revenues from such a top billed fight, I was not aware that you could be paired off to a gladiator of a higher league without a prior request. We already seem to be on a similar path, you challenged and defeated Yasha and Greevus, I got paired with them and defeated them as well. I do not doubt we will meet in single combat, the seed has been planted, but I feel it's not time yet for it to sprout. Currently I am planning to leave Gladius for a few weeks to deal with a Dragon threat somewhere up north, so it will have to be after I return.

Nexa of the Twin Paths

@King Uther

I am sorry to hear about your wife's accident. When Balbanes and Nexa fight I much prefer an even contest, though. If we are not paired by League 6, I will challenge you myself if neccessary.

@Tellish of Ket

Can you be paired of against a gladiator from a higher league without requesting it? It seems to have happened to both Zassl and Nexa. Their opponents, Balbanes and the Pale Rider, are both level 5, but were never moved to the level 5 list, which might have caused the mix-up.

Also, to remind you (or Cat) the gladiators who's fights were in late last week did not have their rankings and wins/losses updated.

@Maraxus

Exchanging opponents would be an option. Or do you prefer to fight the Pale Rider. ;)

Any potions?
I assume they come with leather armor, wooden shield, javelins and a morning star as per the MM entry.

Another thing; they are CR 2 but ECL 4! And they have scent! I suppose the lack of gear evens things out.

@King Uther
Sorry to hear about your wife's accident. Hope she is okay.

@Luni, King Uther, Pittbull

I noticed something that will affect the fight and/or tactics if Virgo chooses to bring in his cohort.

In short: Shaylynn is too high a level cohort by at least 1 level which has a ripple effect on other issues too.

Virgo's leadership score is LEVEL + CHR mod + adjustments: 8 (or 9 if we allow choose to count ECL instead of level) -1 (8 chr) -1 (different alignment) +2 (great renown [being generous on this one, since LG doesn't have a rep system yet])
= 8 (9) [I suggest that all characters with this feat have their leadership score calculated where they list the feat]

A cohort from a leadership score of 8 gives a max level of 5, leadership score of 9 gives a max level of 6. (If we don't count the renown modifier 5 or 6 leadership score yields a max level of 3 or 4 respectively).

Explaination on different alignments penalty: in order to pick a pseudodragon familiar a wizard must be w/in one step in both the law-chaos and good-evil spectrum to the familiars alignment (NG in this case) which means allowable choices are LG,NG,CG,LN,N,CN none of which match Virgo's NE alignment. Another requirement is that the wizard be lvl 7 to pick a pseudodragon.

Other less major comments: Shaylynn's hp should be 12 not 19 (at level 7) since she does not have an enhancement item for con which makes her con score an 8.
She should also get another feat if she is level 5 or higher (bonus feat from wiz class -- metamagic, item creation, school focus etc). She should also have an alignment noted.

-----------------------
My comments:
I think that ECL instead of level *should* be used for the leadership feat, otherwise the feat becomes much less useful to those with a Level Adjustment.
I also personally think that Virgo should get the great renown bonus since he is the guild leader of EHTC and is the secretary of commerce in Gladius.

Edit: Cross posted to prison also.

Okay, I don't know which one is the easier opponent for me, The Pale-Rider or Nexa.
On the one hand Pale Rider has much more ways of killing me but Nexa has both, better touch AC and better saves. About the same, I think but Pale Rider had brought more reward in case of an (improbable) victory. :)

Well, at least, I get another chance against huggin' monks. ;) Tactics will be sent shortly.

You're right about the familiars not getting their own feats (other than those specifically mentioned in their entry in the SRD).

You can counterspell a Spell-like ability, but unless it is exactly the same as a spell in the SRD, you would have to use Dispel Magic.

Hmmm, I missed the longspear on her equipment list when designing tactics: I though she got rid of it. My plan pretty much revolved around her raging, which she decided only to do if grappled, and I knew that neither trip nor grapple would work as well as I hoped do to her strength, so...

So, based on that, I guess I would have hoped you would have equated "withdraw" to "tumble out" since the obvious intention was to avoid gettin pinged, but I guess that is also partly my fault in being nonobservant.

... and I specifically looked for that longspear too.

I also see that if I had just used expertise and not fighting defensive also, I would have hit an extra time, but had no effect on her attacks. Just my luck though that she gets most of the natural 20's or that that crit came right after force screen died, which would have blocked it.

So then this brings up the issue if you can decide what order you mix in your primary and off hand attacks.

But I think no matter the ifs and whats, I'd probably lose anyway.

Yeah, those 20s of Telin's are what Torgirr is kinda concerned about on his quest...

Anyhow. I dunno if you can tumble as part of a withdrawal action anymore than you can tumble as part of a charge...

Also, in round 14(?) when yoriko withdraws to drink her healing potion, Sdentch should have gotten another AoO with the longspear (if Sdentch had her based, that is).

That might have saved her the cost of the potion, at least.

I totally expected you to try improved trip on me, Mind Rogue. You had a reasonable chance at success that way, I thought...

No AoO because you attack, step back and attack again. In this case, you are at 10ft before she gets an action - so she can withdraw safely. Oh, and its round 16...

Well, tumbling wouldn't have netted you anything - as you wouldn't have been able to tumble as far (unless you wanted to tumble at full speed - which I guarantee you I won't do unless it is specifically asked for) as you could withdraw. At a full withdraw, you actually were able to move out of the range of attack that Torgirr could base you with, enabling you to tap your tattoo.

I considered readying an action to cast the Mist on a charge, but realized that the concealment bonus for being in the mist after the charge woudn't be anywhere near enough to be useful (only 20% for being 5 feet away vs 50% for being more than 5 ft away).

Good tactics, though. I was actually afraid Grik might try a grapple, and I'd forgotten to include my anti-grapple tactic. (I'll leave it unspoken for when I finally go up against those huggin' monks. :D)

No, but that would allow me to tumble 20' then tap my tatoo and essentially have the same result as if I had withdrawn 80 then tapped.

In retrospect, I should probably have just gone giant and either grappled or tripped him. I was afraid to do either because of Sdentch's high strength, but I should have just used the power to overcome it.

Well, I guess since Lortavos has zero chance against his flying tactics it could be a reason for Withdrawal.

On the other hand, if Gonbow thinks Lortavos is going to lose any way, don't reward Archie Longbow by making him spend 0 resources, make him pay for his victory at least!

Hey Gonbow,

I just took a look at your character and thought I would hand out the olive branch of surrender to you.

My terms are simple. I will offer to spend 1 alter self, (75gp), and replace all 20 arrows...though we both know it wouldn't take me 20 arrows to kill you. I will even through in my magic weapon scroll (25 gp) for good measure to round it off to an even 100gp, plus 20 arrows.

Is this fair? We both have a lot of homework we could be doing, I am certain of it, and we would each save a tremendous amount of time.

Oh, heck. I'm feeling generous. I will even throw in my two scrolls of true strike for good measure. At least then it will cost me some xp as well.

Is this a reasonable offer?

Yes. But I do not intend to be robbed of my intended comedic relief! Agree to let me write a story for the 'battle' as well and we have a deal.

The RAW state that the Entangle spell only tries to entangle those who have avoided the initial entanglement. What happens if a creature moves into the entangle area?

The way I have moderated said encounter is that the creature that moves into the area must make Reflex saves. Is this correct, or is it simply an interpretation of the slightly vague rules?
Maraxus

10-01-05, 02:25 AM
About the fight:
-My buckler is mithril, so no 5% arcane spell failure.
-As both of us wrote, Zassl's hitpoints should be 15. I am really sorry for the mistake and will change it, once the fight is done.
-Yes, it was the right idea to stay on the top. Maybe it is not the best ides to try to escape the whole time, instead of just accepting that I am entangled, but I did not write this in my tactic. My fault.
-With all her sling bullets, Nexa is encumbered - if she did not leave them at home. ;) Well never mind that.

But most important:

-Just because I am entangled, My AC does not drop to 14.
Entangled: -2 penalty on all attack rolls and a -4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a Concentration check (DC 15 + the spell’s level) or lose the spell. In case of that spell, I also can't move from the spot.

(And damn, I just see that I made a mistake in the tactic, since I really said, that attacking overrules buffing. Luckily I won initiative ;))
King Uther

10-01-05, 02:44 AM
Two things about the Nexa fight:

1. The same thing Maraxus noted, his AC in the entangle is a 20.
2. Nexa left her sling bullets at home. End of story. If Nexa wanted to bring them, they should be written in equipment. Same thing with pre-buffs. They must already be on the sheet.
Sindorin

10-01-05, 03:17 AM
Ah, I'm sorry about that. I will look at it tomorrow when I am not dead tired.

Are you sure Nexa couldn't just pick up a stone from the arena grounds?

Also, have I pitlorded correctly with the wolf entering the zone of entanglement? My original question was not answered...
King Uther

10-01-05, 03:25 AM
Yes, you are correct about the wolf being entangled. Also, picking up something from the ground is a move action, and sling stones deal less damage than sling bullets.

I think you may have missed this....under unused expendables on Nexa's sheet, there are 20 sling bullets. So she did bring ammunition....just the other 174 stayed at home.

As previous posters said, Zassl's AC should be 20 and the wolf must save when he enters the entangle field.

Note that you can still attack (at -2) and cast spells (DC 15 + 1/level Concentration) when entangled, so Silverfur does not have to break free to carry out his attack command. Additionally, Zassl will draw AoO's from Silverfur for spellcasting etc.

EDIT: Sling bullets are expendables (just like arrows) are they? They are not restored by the Nimbus if they are broken during the fight, right?

@Maraxus:

Innovative tactics, trying to use the rock to prevent a grapple!

I don't know if it would have worked as you described, though. It hinges on the fact that Nexa should not be able to enter your square as a free action, but it does not specificy why she wouldn't be able to do that.

The Grapple heading makes my movement into your square free, not a free action. It also says I must be able to move into your square, so I guess a failed DC 15 Climb check would make that impossible, so that's a 50/50 chance of failing at the most. And you will still receive damage from the grappling, its just that the grapple cannot be maintained.
Maraxus

10-01-05, 07:25 AM
With cover towards Silverfur, I'm save from AoOs.

Oh and looks like you are right about that I can still be grappled and damaged, but I don't think you get to climb the rock as a free part of the grapple, so you can't maintain the grapple at last.

But let's see how the fight turns out. My chances are bad, your second hit is a hit even against my AC of 20. With 9 hp less, the chances to survive a second hit are very low. But now that Sindorin knows I can cast while entangled, maybe he does so and two really (really) lucky magic missles could win me that fight. :)

I don't see why you can't climb a rock for free. There's no minimum to the amount or type of free movement as far as I can see. Besides, I see grapplers climbing atop horses for free all the time here in CoCo.

But let's see how the fight turns out. My chances are bad, your second hit is a hit even against my AC of 20. With 9 hp less, the chances to survive a second hit are very low. I agree that Sindorin should make you try and cast instead of breaking free. But you would still need to be REALLY lucky, because my tactics state that I will cure if I get below 11 hp, breaking LOS first if possible, and the maximum damage on the missiles is 10. Since you are entangled I can easily break LOS, cure and then return for the last couple of shots.

Anyway, nice tactics with the rock!

I hate to shoot myself in the foot, but i think i lost that fight, or at least Greefe gets an extra set of swings.

Baallor attacks: [8] +14 = 22 vs AC 22 [hit] 3d6[6 +3 +1] +12 = 22

I don't believe my attack is +14. In my tactics, my +14 to hit, included being invisible and charging. I should only have +10. [+2bab, +1mw, -1size, +8str]

I have a general question... has nothing to do with the fight I'm pitlording ... almost ;)

A psionic character can use 1/3 of his power points in a fight. But what, if he is stripped of power points by another effect? What in the special case of psychic enervation?

I would say, if your opponents somehow steals you points, it would be something else, but if you produce the effect (like the mentioned enervation), it counts against the 1/3 rule.

Am I right?

Yes. Being enervated or drained of PP from any effect does count towards the 1/3 rule.

I also noted that I forgot to cut the strength bonus of your foe in half on his secondary attack, although that doesn't change anything. He still cuts you in half with his next swing. It probably doesn't help you that your foe can hit you on a 2 and in fact would hit on a 1 if it weren't for the automiss rule.

@NiQil - the only thing that I notice off the bat is in round 12 where you have Alexi step in instead of stepping away because "she would be in my reach" - when I am enlarged, I strike as a large creature with a regular weapon, not as a medium character with a reach weapon. Therefore, I actually threaten at 5ft and 10ft.

All in all, it won't have much effect on things, but just figured I'd mention it.

As to the audit - I'm checking on a few things - so I'll get back to you.

Ahh....my mistake. Yer right though, it won't change anything even if I have Alexi withdraw, because you would still be able to close with Expeditious Retreat still in effect....so the kill shot would still happen. However, if there are any other issues, I will fix it. But if that is the only thing, I'm not going to bother.

After looking at the whole manifester level/credit thing with regard to powerstones and tattoos, I think I have found a serious flaw. Let me provide an example.

A normal ML 1 powerstone of Vigor provides 5 hp for 1 min and costs 25 x 1 (power level) x 1 (ML) = 25 gp.
A normal ML 3 powerstone of Vigor provides 5 hp for 3 min and costs 25 x 1 (power level) x 2 (ML) = 75 gp.
An augmented (2 PP) ML 1 powerstone of Vigor provides 15 hp for 1 min and costs 25 x 1 (power level) x 1 (ML) = 25 gp.
An augmented (2 PP) ML 3 powerstone of Vigor provides 15 hp for 3 min and costs 25 x 1 (power level) x 1 (ML) = 75 gp.

I do not think that the RAW provides for augmented powerstones/tattoos for purchase because there is no cost difference according to their own formula. This works out great for crafting your own powerstones, since the cost doesn't increase to augment. This also seems to work when compared to the fact that magic has it's effects go up based on the user level, and not just the duration like psionics does.

Here in CoCo, we allow the purchase of augmented powerstones by increasing the ML and for credits, and that kinda screws with the pricing formula, since the formula wasn't meant to take into account augmentation (just higher manifester levels).

By our houserules, for every 2 manifester levels we add to a powerstone, it also increases the power level by 1.

A CoCo ML 1 powerstone of Vigor provides 5 hp for 1 min and costs 25 x 1 (power level) x 1 (ML) = 25 gp.
A CoCo ML 3 powerstone of Vigor provides 15 hp for 3 min and costs 25 x 2 (power level) x 3 (ML) = 150 gp, as well as 1 credit for it being 2 ML's higher than what it would normally sell for.

This is the attempt to make powerstone cost comparable to scroll cost of equivalent level. The problem here, is what if I want an ML 2 powerstone of Vigor?

I can get a CoCo one that gives me 10 hp for 2 min and costs 25 x 1 power level) x 2 (ML) = 50 gp, and not have to spend credits.

With our houserule, we are, in effect, giving away free augmentation by the buyer just not taking that last step and taking it to something that would require credits. All they are paying is the additional cost for that extra ML (which is the same as a normal powerstone of the same ML), and they are getting the added bonus of augmentation for free.

Somehow this doesn't seem correct. I think this houserule should be reexamined.

ROFL...ya i know. I could have won with hit/run tactics using true strike, expeditious retreat, archery, but where's the fun in that? Plus it's not a serious character. He's being deleted anyhow. He was originally created to take advantage of collosal+ sized weapons.....which didn't work anyhow, so no point in continuing something that doesn't work without the sum of it's parts.

He pin-pointed you. But your tactics broke down very early...which was a good thing i guess, read my comments in red in your tactics section. If you had the opportunity to send your familiar in for an attack early, he'd have been killed and would not have been able to save your butt, once you were grappled.

Also, if you didn't have tumble, you'd have been dee, ee, dee....DED (tm).

It's a move action to determine direction with scent, then they can only pinpoint when within 5 ft. Since I moved before the charge, wouldn't he have to re-locate me? Am I misunderstanding the rules?

1 rank in tumble is a good investment for everybody :)

A creature with the scent ability can detect opponents by sense of smell, generally within 30 feet. If the opponent is upwind, the range is 60 feet. If it is downwind, the range is 15 feet.

And yes, Tumble training is mandatory. Its simply a good idea.

Scent (Ex): This special quality allows a creature to detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell. Creatures with the scent ability can identify familiar odors just as humans do familiar sights.

The creature can detect opponents within 30 feet by sense of smell. If the opponent is upwind, the range increases to 60 feet; if downwind, it drops to 15 feet. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at twice the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk or troglodyte stench, can be detected at triple normal range.

When a creature detects a scent, the exact location of the source is not revealed—only its presence somewhere within range. The creature can take a move action to note the direction of the scent.

Whenever the creature comes within 5 feet of the source, the creature pinpoints the source’s location.

On a side note - if anyone has a reply, I would appreciate it:

When engaging in a monster fight, if the monster is a innate spellcaster, are they also limited to the 1/3 magic per day rule? I am assuming the answer is yes, otherwise this could get real messy.

If they are not restricted to the 1/3 per day rule, then it means that anyone can play said race and have a bunch of magic that is not restricted in anyway. So, there you have it.

Your augmentation examples are incorrect.

Case 1) You can never augment above the Manifester level. Certain abilities raise your effective Manifester level IF you pay for it in some manner (HP for Overchannel, Wild Surge risk for Surges). This is an impossible situation, period.

Case 2) An augmented 2 PP ML 3 powerstone of Vigor provides 10 hp for 3 minutes.

As you might think, I have a problem with some of the aspects of that fight.

1. Why wouldn't I withdraw to heal behind cover? That's just plain silly to try and heal when I know he only has to make a touch attack against me.

2. Magic Missile on just the hand? 2 missiles guaranteed kill the hand, with an extra that could target an image

3. Vampiric Touch does 2d6 damage

Obviously, especially due to number 3, the fight is not over.

I might be able to provide some kind of answers.

1. you would have to move, then draw a scroll, only having to heal the following round. My best guess is that it looked like you needed the healing right away.

2. Again, just working on the way i read it, is that with MM, no two targets can be more than 15' apart. If my hand was attacking you from medium range, it would be well farther than 15' from me.

3. When i read the dmg, i just assumed it was a crit. No answer for ya there.

Alexi Wood vs Daeren Stronghammer is up. As always, if there are any errors, the sooner you can let me know, the better.
Comments:

Tactics (Kind of sad that I have to start here): I actually do get a +3 dodge bonus when fighting defensively because I have at least 5 ranks in tumble. The +6/-7 from using combat expertise and defensive fighting is +3/-3 from Expertise and +3/-4 from defensive fighting. So you see, I did have it right.

Round 3: This is too many actions: drawing my mind blade (move), charging it (move) and readying to attack (standard). However, the mind blade remains charged because I missed, so really I only have to draw and ready.

Round 4: Enlarge Person actually takes a full round to cast, although it doesn't matter because I missed.

Round 6: Rage imposes another -2 penalty on Daeren's AC. It is reduced to 18.

Round 11: As has been said, I can't step forward into his area. However, I can simply step backward, since he cannot charge someone within 15 ft of him because of his reach.

Now I wonder if things would have been different without as much defensive junk. Probably not, although it looks like defensive fighting was a little superfluous. Without it, I would have actually gotten at least two more hits without letting anything additional in. Sadly, it looks like I was playing too defensively.

Tactics: I wasn't aware of that with regards to the tumble....will fix that. However, you can Combat Expertise up to your BAB, which is what you stated to do, so it would be -8 penalty to attack to get a +7 to your AC.

Round 3: Noted, will fix.

Round 4: Oops....will fix.

Round 6: Damn...oops again...will fix.

Roound 11: Already acknowledged....however....if you could show me the part about not being able to charge someone within 15 feet due to size, that would be appreciated. As Telin pointed out to me, he threatens both a 5 ft and 10 ft area around him....and you only have to be 10 ft away from someone to charge them. So if you go to 15 ft, he would be able to charge. So if there is something that says large sizes have that restriction, I'll certainly take it into account when I fix all this (I haven't seen anything of that nature so far).

Also, bear in mind that the 5 ft steps I kept having him take were because of my misunderstanding of how Enlarge Person works. I was unaware that he still threatened 5 ft away from him. So the movement will change slightly in the rerun, since there is no need for him to keep backing up.

Ummm, my BaB is only +3. Soulknives have the x3/4 progression.

Also, on the charge thing, it says "You must move to the closest space to which you can attack an opponent." It also says "You must move at least 10 ft". If I stand right outside of his reach, both of these conditions cannot coexist since the closest space which he can attack me is only 5 ft away.

I thought the Soulknife had a fighter attack progression...my bad.

But as far as the charge, the first line you have there, saying that they must move to the closest space to which you can attack. The closest space would be 5 ft away, not 10. He can *also attack you from 10 ft away, but the way I read that is that you must get as close as possible, which would put him 5 ft away. Moving to 15 ft would put 10 ft between you, meeting the conditions for a charge. Now maybe my interpretation of that line is incorrect, but that is where I am coming from.

It's moot anyway for this battle....but I'll keep it in mind for the future.

One thing I don't like is tone of voice in typing. It's too hard to tell how a person is sounding. For note, this is not a mean tone in any way. I just want to make sure everything was done fairly.

Also, your final attack provokes an AoO. You could cast defensively, but that isn't mentioned in your tactics. The reason that you couldn't 5' step is that I threaten every square around you as I am above you[I think]. Plus you aren't written down as moving anyways.

No no no...King..don't worry. I know your upset, but i in no way take it personally. And i know we both want it to be fair.

Ok...please don't be a Cat....you don't have to specify to cast defensively to do it. PLUS when you charge, you have to stop at the first avialable square...so you don't threaten everything around me, and if you'll note, i didn't cast anything anyhow....i performed a melee attack with my spectral hand. I would like to challenge that a Monster Fight should not occur within the Monster Arena if the Monster in question is going to be able to fly. My reasoning is that a part of the reason for using the Monster Arena was to prevent those who could fly from pummeling the non-flying monsters.

Careful examination of the Player’s Handbook and the Dungeon Master’s Guide will reveal that there are only a few specific references to sleeping:

* Certain spells (sleep, deep slumber) can cause a condition called “sleeping”. This is apparently a status condition that is defined within the sleep spell description, rather than in the Glossary. The spell claims that, “Sleeping creatures are helpless.”
* Wizards require 8 hours of rest to prepare spells, but specifically do NOT need to sleep.
* Characters sleeping in medium or heavy armor are automatically fatigued. Characters sleeping in light armor are not.
* Sleeping is required to remove the effects of the fatigued or exhausted condition statuses.
* Sleeping inflicts a –10 penalty to Listen checks.
* Elves do not need to sleep. However, it is not specified that other player races DO need to sleep.

Therefore, we can conclude that while there may be some specific reasons your character might want to sleep—and a few magically induced situations when sleep is forced upon you—there is absolutely no rules support for sleep being required. Indeed, chances are you will want your character to never sleep again, since it leaves you open to being the recipient of a coup de grace due to helplessness. If you are having your character sleep every night, then you are deliberately exposing yourself to whatever traps your DM is setting for you in the night.

If your DM is having you fall asleep naturally because you have stayed awake for 168 hours, then he is clearly abusing his powers as DM, and you should feel free to quote the relevant rules passages. In particular, ask him to show you the section where it says that characters are capable of inflicting the “sleeping” status upon themselves without magical assistance.

ECL 3 - Devolved Sleestak (Enterik) vs Tak the Hungry (Oldmangray) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=7404665#post7404665)

@Cerebus13: You asserted that Devolved Sleestak does not have Tower Shield proficiency. I was under the impression that Lizardfolk are proficient with all shields because of the following...

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: A lizardfolk is automatically proficient with simple weapons and shields.

Now if that is meant to be read "and shields (except tower shields)" it would be clear. The problem is that, unlike every core character class, whether or not this shield proficiency includes tower shields is not stated explicitly. So I was equipping under the assumption that the default was all. If it is otherwise, I will have to take the substantial negative to hit modifier into consideration.

Regarding Devolved stalling for 6 rounds while invisible, it was noticed that in his prior fight Tak drank the SoF in the first round, and being 10 rounds in duration, I thought with a couple of rounds of buffing and a couple of stalking, that Devolved could avoid being disqualified while getting on Bernoulli's better side. I had calculated the average damage to be quite close given our respective AC (without crits and with his SoF), so any edge seemed valuable. However, in reality, it really only served to annoy the pitlord :P

In the end, I'm fine with the fight as ran. Thanks again.

@Niqil - there's three things about the fight between Dameon and Kraegin that I'd like to mention. First of all, from Dameon's tactics:

Ok, at this point I am attacking him. At the moment I can attack, activate Charm (domain ability, whose result grants me 1 more net usage of Turn Undead per day)

Activating his charm ability does not grant him 1 more usage of Turn Undead per day. This is, in essence, the same as using Eagle's Splendor - which would not increase a power's usage per day. I asked about this with reference to Sir Valkin back when he first started and this was the answer I was given. Given that, he only gets 2 divine mights - and the third one wouldn't be taken into account - so I'm still up with 2hp.

Regardless of whether I am down or not, the spiritual weapons still attack after I am down as they continue to attack unless another target is specified or if the target moves out of LOS from the caster. Since he hasn't moved, he still gets attacked by the two weapons.

Lastly, though it didn't affect any rolls, for some reason, you only applied a +8 bonus to some of the attacks made by the spiritual weapons. They should all be at +9.

Actually, from the FaQ: Page 2.

Things get a little stickier when talking about powers with
daily limits, such as turn/rebuke undead or lay on hands. (Hold
on, because this gets worse before it gets better.) In this case, a
change to the key ability score indeed affects the daily limit—
in the example above, the cleric would gain 2 additional
turn/rebuke attempts per day—but these aren’t just “free” uses.
Here’s why:
Assume the cleric above has a normal Charisma score of
12, granting him 4 turn attempts per day (3 + 1 for Cha bonus).
Casting eagle’s splendor increases his Charisma to 16, which
would grant 6 attempts per day. At the end of the spell,
however, his daily limit would drop back down to 4 attempts.
At that point, the player must compare the number of daily uses
expended to the daily limit to see if any still remain.
Here’s how that might work in play. Our cleric turns
undead twice, then casts eagle’s splendor right before a big
fight with a horde of zombies. During the duration of the spell,
he makes four more turning checks. When the spell ends, he
compares his new daily limit (4) to the number of attempts used
(6)—whoops, no turns left. Hope all the undead have been
destroyed, because even if the cleric cast eagle’s splendor
again, he wouldn’t have any more turning attempts available,
since he’s already used all 6 of his allotted attempts. If he could
increase his Charisma to 18, he’d “gain” one more turning
attempt (since he has now used 6 out of his allotted 7 daily
attempts), usable only during the duration of the Charismaboosting
effect.

It is confusing.

For reference, here's the two posts made then:
Original post about the issue (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6851140&postcount=1363)

Alright, here's a question:

You have a paladin (lvl 2) with the lay on hands ability and a charisma of 12. Normally, he can heal 2 hp/day with his ability.

Then he finds a Cloak of Charisma +2, which increases his charisma to 14. Now he can use his ability to heal 4hp/day - right?

Well what about using a scroll of Eagle's Splendor? Can he heal up to his new charisma score bonus * lvl within the duration of the spell?

Luni's response (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6851335&postcount=1365)
I'm pretty sure it has to be all day. So, if you found a lvl 3600 scroll of Eagles Splendor, you could heal more.

Of course, you can use the scroll of eagles splendor to up your smite damage.

Ummm...It's not really 'rules as written' but can someone who is unconcious really have LOS?
Helpless: A helpless character is paralyzed, held, bound, sleeping, unconscious, or otherwise completely at an opponent’s mercy. A helpless target is treated as having a Dexterity of 0 (–5 modifier). Melee attacks against a helpless target get a +4 bonus (equivalent to attacking a prone target). Ranged attacks gets no special bonus against helpless targets. Rogues can sneak attack helpless targets.Unconscious: Knocked out and helpless. Unconsciousness can result from having current hit points between –1 and –9, or from nonlethal damage in excess of current hit points....Can't find the line of sight section however.

I continue to be dumbfounded with Rebreg. :raincloud:

Foremost, I'd like to thankyou for finding the time to run the match.
None the less, I must point out a couple things about the battle that bother me a bit. First, the DC10 handle animal check to tell his horse to attack is not mentioned, and would drastically change the course of the fight if it is failed (25%chance). Also when the horse takes damage, a second check must be made because the DC increases +2 and any time that a DC increases a new check must be made. Also in the 6th round, the position of the color spray would require that the horse make a save as well as Rebreg and before Rebreg's action in the turn. If the Horse fails the save Rebreg will not waist the action used to attack the Horse. Lastly I must ask why in this battle Rebreg tried to close with Solon on the 6th round? Assuming that the Horse makes the Will Save, this move gains Rebreg nothing because he has already used his standard action and cannot attack this round. The net effect is offering his opponent an AoO with no tangible benifit to Rebreg. This could not be to get safely inside the range that is threatened by Solon. Solon takes his action after Rebreg does, so there is nothing to prevent him from using the obvious 5' step and attack strategy, then drawing another AoO on Rebreg's next attempt to close. In effect moving into Solon's range grants an AoO for no gain that I can see. The most prudent thing for Rebreg to do in this instance is to stall untill he can move in for a grapple on his own turn. Assuming that none of the other details change the course of the fight, I see two courses of action for Rebreg after he drops the horse in Round 6:
1- Rebreg stands in his spot and doesn't move at all at the end of his turn (probably suffering an attack from Horus). Then Solon may hit him with his spear. Rebreg will then take a 5'step into base contact with Solon on his turn and Rebreg will fullattack to start a grapple.
2- Rebreg stands in his spot (or moves behind cover) at the end of his turn. Solon tries to hit him with a color spray from a scroll (as per the tactics) and ends his turn with the spear on the ground, then Rebreg get's hit by the familiar (for 1-2hp). If Rebreg makes the Will save(50%chance), on Rebreg's turn he charges into a grapple with Solon.

In case 2 Solon would end his turn without the spear in hand because he would require a move action to draw the scroll, then standard action to cast the spell. No actions would remain to pick up the spear, and he would need both hands to cast the spell: 1 to hold the scroll and 1 for the spells somatic component.
If the Horse falls due to the color spray, Rebreg can get into base contact with Solon and not draw any AoO on the way. All he has to do is move within 10' as a normal move, and this will not draw an AoO, and 5'step into base contact, then try a touch attack for the grapple. You only draw an AoO for moving out of a threatined square, but you can avoid it with a 5'step.

Lastly, though it didn't affect any rolls, for some reason, you only applied a +8 bonus to some of the attacks made by the spiritual weapons. They should all be at +9.

/d

With regard to the spiritual weapons, the spell does state that if you lose line of sight on your opponent, they will return to your side and hover. With you being unconscious, you have lost that line of sight, which is why they hovered there at the end. Unless you know of some way to still see someone unconscious :D

Also, I went back and looked at the attack modifiers for the spiritual weapons...and yes...in, I think, 2 rounds I used an 8 instead of a 9...and I think I know why. In the first round I did it, Kraegin had a roll of some kind that had a +8 modifier to it, and I think I just kept using that number for some reason LOL. However, in the instances where I did do that, the correct modifier would not change anything, so I'm not going to bother with it unless there is another issue that needs to be changed. If the Charm issue has not been settled to your satisfaction, feel free to say so, and we can dig into it further. I honestly did not look at a rule when I did that, I just went with what I was pretty sure was correct. So if I'm wrong, certainly I will change it.

Balbanes doesn't ave to make a CL check to cast a True Strike Scroll. Therefore the acid arrow hits a round earlier and Shocking Grasp is cast earlier as well because I believe I had only 1 True Strike and not 2. I wouldn't have to cast defensively since I wouldn't have closed yet. Also, the horse doesn't have reach and if I am in the air he couldn't attack me.

Woo-hoo. Yay run-ons.

Okay, I've added in the initial handle animal check. Unfortunatly, I don't spot any notice saying that if the animal becomes injured, an additional check is necessary, just that if it is injured when you use the skill, the DC is higher.

In round 6, the color spray actually doesn't hit Darkwind. The grid instead looks something like this:

O O O 0 c O
O O O c c O
O S c c R O
O O O D D O
O O O D D O

Oh, and his tactics said to hit you with Color Spray from memory, so he doesn't have to drop anything.

I also changed it so you stand in place. Since you have nothing better to do, you complete your flurry to try to beat a dying horse to death.

With regard to the Handle Animal/injury issue:

Handle an Animal: This task involves commanding an animal to perform a task or trick that it knows. If the animal is wounded or has taken any nonlethal damage or ability score damage, the DC increases by 2. If your check succeeds, the animal performs the task or trick on its next action.
“Push” an Animal: To push an animal means to get it to perform a task or trick that it doesn’t know but is physically capable of performing. This category also covers making an animal perform a forced march or forcing it to hustle for more than 1 hour between sleep cycles. If the animal is wounded or has taken any nonlethal damage or ability score damage, the DC increases by 2. If your check succeeds, the animal performs the task or trick on its next action.

Emphasis mine.

Bear in mind (and this is solely my interpretation...I have yet to look for text to back it up) that with the above quote, it implies that you must make a check each round. It does not say that you do, and it does not say that you don't, but it does say that after the check, it will perform the task or trick on its next action.....it says nothing about it continuing beyond that next action. At the very least, when changing the action, a new check would be required.

Also (and I have no idea if this is relavent to the issue), handling an animal is a move action, while pushing an animal is a full round action (except with regards to rangers/druids and their companions, which then can handle as a free action and push as a move action)

Sorry, but can someone pick up Brilf & Hagrid vs Virgo? I just don't have the time to run it anymore. I'll fw. all 4 PM.

If no one else takes it by 6:00 pm I'll do it.

So send me the PM's with the strategy Just in Case no one volunteers.

@Luni

You are right about the errant CL checks. But, I have to use the same rolls, so the 1 rolled for the CL of True Strike becomes the CL of Acid Arrow. Which fails, fails the next round roll was 4+1, but is cast the third round and crits, even without the True Strike

- If I am visible when I cast acid arrow, instead cast true strike first and Dive+Charge with schocking grasp instead of with Glaive. If ALter Self is off, instead ready vs casting with Bow.

Balbanes doesn't have Reach with shocking grasp. So Balbanes, skips the true strike phase, casts Shocking Grasp and dives/touches next round. If Balbanes can touch Pale-Rider, Pestilence can attack Balbanes. So, if Balbanes can touch and roll max damage with shocking grasp, the fight is changed. If he fails to kill Pale-Rider, he dies anyways.

Edit: Balbanes charges and hits for 8 damage. In return, Pale-Rider crits with shocking grasp thanks to the -2 penalty to AC of Balbanes. Pestilence finishes Balbanes off.

It would be physically imposible for the horse to attack me. I mean that totally. His hoofs cannot attack above him. That would be retarded. I am asking for a little bit of logic here. I am not saying I have reach with shocking grasp, but that if I am hovering in the air Pestilence doesn't even have the opportunity to attack.
TelinArtho

10-03-05, 04:28 PM
Regardless of whether it is "logical" - this is the way the rules work. Its a little wonky - but at the same time, it just makes it easier to say that if you are directly next to someone they can attack you. So in the case of flying above a horse, it can attack you.

However, I don't think it really takes much for a horse to attack someone who just touched the rider. The horse rears back and strikes with its hooves. This is why there's a ride check to attack while the mount is attacking.

3 last things to note.

1: Pale didn't hit me in round 25 because his to hit was reduced for being entangled.

2: If you're using past rolls to determine damage and attacks, you should use the first 5d6 off of the original shocking grasp damage, which equals 22.

3: Pale also takes 2d4 damage during that same round where the shocking grasp hits, meaning that he dies if the acid takes more than 4 damage. ALso, it would take 2d4 the next round, meaning if he knocked me out I could still kill him the next round via acid and have a stabilization contest.

Pale is entangled, not the hand. The hand is incorporeal anyhow, and so would still hit. As an avid horse rider, i can tell you from much experience when a horse rears up, it can reach around 12' in height...and i'm just talking about normal riding horses. These are larger, trained mounts for combat. To rear up and attack with a hoof, makes easy sense if you've ever lived on a farm and been around a lot of horses/animals like i have.

If we are going to take logic and physical impossibilities into consideration, we might as well stop arena fights all together....

The rules are fairly clear on the ability of his horse attacking you from that position, not much interpretion required.

Considering, by D&D rules, that a horse has 10 ft reach due to being a large creature, if you are close enough to make a touch attack on it's rider, you would definitely be within it's reach, if looked at in 3D.
TelinArtho

10-03-05, 04:53 PM
Actually, NiQil - you mispeak a little there. A horse is a Large (Long) Creature - which gives it a space of 10ft (cube) and a reach of 5ft. This is as opposed to say an ogre who is a large (tall) creature, occupying a space of 10ft (cube) and has a reach of 10ft.

With regard to the Handle Animal/injury issue:

Those lines you bolded do not say that another check is necessary if the animal becomes injured: it merely says that if the animal has been previously injured, the DC is 2 higher than normal.

Didn't I say as much in my post? I said that I was posting the relevant portion from the SRD. I also said, below the quote, that I interpreted them to mean that they do that, with no text whatsoever to back me up. That it was solely my opinion.

Ack...yer right. I forgot about the long/tall differentiations with regard to large and above. But even so, a horse should easily be able to rear up and attack something 5 ft above it. Especially since I seriously doubt that it's rider is taller than 5 ft from hips to head (which is where I assume the touch attack would occur....there or the shoulder). Think of it a little like a bear rearing up on it's hind legs to fight...kinda the same principle.

I'm looking at Invisible Castle and I'm having trouble finding some of these rolls here. Specifically, my readied action in round four is listed as being a 21: plenty to hit without any note on a reason why it would miss. It also appears to be lacking any of the three saves that I had to make as well as the damage that I took as a result of the CdG that happened as a result of those failed saves. Not that I don't trust you, but I like to check numbers.

There are few two things I like to see corrected, though, before you start finalizing the rewards:

1. Owly has only 9 hp not, 12 hp (since Casgish has 19 and Owly has half his hit points)
This means that Owl cannot throw that second Tanglefoot Bag later in the fight because Aramur took the familiar to 0 hp. with his sling.

2. Being entangled (which he actually isn't, see 1.) doesn't prevent Aramur from taking actions.

3. The stun and blinding dissipates just before Casgish initiative in round 7, which means that Aramur is back at AC 17 when Casgish attacks, causing that attack to miss.

4. Aramur is before Casgish in the initiative order, he isn't blinded nor stunned in rond 8, why doesn't he do anything? My tactics are fairly specific on this: he should rage, draw his guisarme and attack Casgish.

Brilf and Hagrid get together 4200XP(ECL9)x (9[Virgo's ECLmax]/7[Shaylynn's CR])= 5400XP/3(losing)=1800XP---> 900XP for Hagrid and Brilf each. Oh, I forgot the cap: Hagrid and Brilf get max XP for losing a fight that makes Ecl7x100=700XP.

Brilf and Hagrid get 1500gp(ECL9-losing)x (9/7)=1929/2= 964,5 each.

Virgo gets 1350XP(ECL7)x2=2700gp x (7/9)= 2100XP
Virgo gets 2600gp(ECL7)x2=5200gp x (7/9)= 4044gp

No it's the XP which are capped!

If you lose the fight, you get only 1/3 of the XP you would have gotten if you had won it. Also, you can never get more XP than 100 * (your current ECL) by losing a fight. For example, if you are ECL 12 and you lose against an ECL 15 gladiator, you should gain (10,800/3) = 3,600 XP. However, the rule limiting XP in case of a loss cuts that down to 1,200 XP gained.

3. The stun and blinding dissipates just before Casgish initiative in round 7, which means that Aramur is back at AC 17 when Casgish attacks, causing that attack to miss.

EDIT: Actually as you're prone it would hit as I get an additional +4 to hit, and I should be getting a +1 to hit since I have height advantage. <as noted in the next post this is incorrect>

4. Aramur is before Casgish in the initiative order, he isn't blinded nor stunned in rond 8, why doesn't he do anything? My tactics are fairly specific on this: he should rage, draw his guisarme and attack Casgish.
This fight ain't over yet..... not by a long shot....

This is true, however before the stun wears off, I asked in my tactics for the following:
If he still lives, draw and cast sleep then CDG. If sleep fails charge him with lance.

So what should happen is he shoots my familiar with a sling bullet (BOOO!) and then he gets color sprayed. I would then attempt to cast sleep per my tactics, followed either by a CDG on a failed will save, or a charge on a successful one.

EDIT2: I will update my familiar's HP after this fight to the correct amount.

Actually as you're prone it would hit as I get an additional +4 to hit, and I should be getting a +1 to hit since I have height advantage.

Why would Aramur be prone? You don't fall down when you get stunned.

This is true, however before the stun wears off, I asked in my tactics for the following:
If he still lives, draw and cast sleep then CDG. If sleep fails charge him with lance.

I disagree, that's not what you wrote in your tactics at all. You wrote to charge with ride-by-attack after the color-spray succeeded, not to cast a sleep spell. But since you retreated into the central stack and were only 5 ft. away, charging would be a bit futile, you have to back up and don't have the room. I think that letting Casgish make regular attacks is a valid adaptation of your tactics by Nightbanegod for the situation.

So what should happen is he shoots my familiar with a sling bullet (BOOO!) and then he gets color sprayed. I would then attempt to cast sleep per my tactics, followed either by a CDG on a failed will save, or a charge on a successful one.

As explained before: no, you wouldn't. It's not in your tactics. It is reasonable adaptation to attempt it after your attacks failed to kill Aramur while he was stunned. But then:

1. First Aramur's gets his action.
2. You stow your lance and draw a scroll (costing you one round of actions).
3. You start casting sleep (another round of actions)
4. You finish casting sleep and, if it succeeds, you back up while drawing lance.
5. You charge

That's a full five rounds more, and you can be dead long before that or I may make my sleep save (55%).... I think your chances are better if you just continue melee after Aramur has recovered from his stun....

EDIT: you edited your post, so my quoted reply may not accurately reflect you latest post.
waywreth

10-04-05, 12:46 PM
You are correct on the prone, I thought you fell down.

My thought was a single attack (charge if possible), followed by draw scroll and cast sleep. Depending on what happened, it would have been a charge or CDG attempt. I will attempt to be more clear in the future.

I should also note I wouldn't stay at 5' since you have that nasty trip attack.

Thanks for running the fight.

Thanks for running it! I didn't check it for mistakes having no time. But I try to calculate the rewards.

The adjustments for allies happens after the cap for both exp and gold.

From FAQ under allies:

You recieve (CA/maxCA*25) % less xp and gp for winning a fight. Similarly you receive opponents opponents (CA/maxCA*25) % more xp and gp for defeating a gladiator that uses allies.

Virgo's max CA is 7 His cohort was fought as ECL 7 so -- CA= Max CA

So Brilf and Hagrid should get:

4200(ECL9) /2 (splitexp) = 2100/3 (losing) = 700 * (1+(7/7*.25)) (opponent ally mod) = 875 xp each
4500gp /2 (split gp) = 2250/3 (losing) = 750 * (1+(7/7*.25)) (opponent ally mod) = 937.5 +147gp profession

Virgo should get:
Virgo gets 1350XP(ECL7)x2=2700gp x (1- (7/7 *.25))= 2025XP
Virgo gets 2600gp(ECL7)x2=5200gp x (1- (7/7 *.25))= 3900gp

FYI an ECL 9 vs ECL 9 fight would normally be 2700xp/4500gp so Virgo earns a bit more gold in fighting 2 ECL7s than vs an ECL 9 but the same xp.

Shaylynn also used a scroll of shocking grasp.

Question for those that might know...

Since ToK is having my pitlord throw in the towel for an opponent that did not submit tactics (and has no defaults), am I correct in assuming that the pitlord needs to put a post in the Battles thread, like normal, that states this and shows me receiving the winners share so that it can be linked?
I believe i already did that yesterday or the day before. Check fight thread, it should be there. I"ll all your profession gp later.

Yes...you did...I just scrolled right over it without seeing it until Telin pointed it out to me. I don't know if you need me to wait to update my sheet or not, but I noticed that my character sheet was not included in the post, so if you need that, I will wait to update it until either it's there or you tell me you don't need it.

@Soullord

Thanks for running the fight.

The adjustments for allies happens after the cap for both exp and gold.

From FAQ under allies:

Changes updated it ended up like this

Hagrid [+875 xp][+937.5 gp] +147gp profession
Brilf [+875 xp][+937.5 gp] +147gp profession
Virgo [+2025XP][+3900gp]

Well, now for my last ditch effort for the Balbanes fight:

1. Using the Pythagorean theorem, it is clear the spectral hand cannot attack Balbanes in multiple rounds due to distance. It can only go 130 ft with the scroll.

2. Balbanes is listed as being 10' in the air and the horse only has a 5' reach but still full-attacks me while being entangled.

3. Hawkeye Coups me, even though it is entangled and doesn't threaten any spaces.

I've already talked to ToK about many things, so here are my suggestions:

1. Change the fight. This is a problem because now the entire fight would have to be changed because Pale lost a standard action in round 5. Who knows where that rabbit hole leads.

2. Try again.

I'm open to suggestions and discussion but there is no way I'm accepting the fight as is.

Everyone has a breaking point. This has gone beyond that. There were no errors 3 re-runs ago, and i've won all versions thereof. But still, he changes Luni's mind to change the way Balbanes acts and it seems like all you need to do to win is whine and cry out loud.

The last re-run was completely error free. Accept it. Nothing should have been changed to equal this last post.

Um, i'm not angry. Just getting to the point and being matter of factly. There were no errors last re-run. That's my point. What i don't understand is that no matter what happens, you keep manipulating something to change the circumstances in your favour. That's all. Believe me, it's not personal. I just think it's poor sportsmanlike to find errors were none existed for the sake of a win.

You are correct on the prone, I thought you fell down.

My thought was a single attack (charge if possible), followed by draw scroll and cast sleep. Depending on what happened, it would have been a charge or CDG attempt. I will attempt to be more clear in the future.

It wasn't entirely clear, but I can see you wanted to do that, it is, certainly in this situation, a good choice. Speaking of tactical choices: I also think Aramur should not have closed to within 10 ft. of Casgish with his sling in his hand, but should have drawn his Guisarme. Then he could have gotten an AoO for spellcasting or gone to melee, since shooting a sling from 10 ft. and within the threat range of Casgish lance is clearly not a good choice to make.... But hey, sometimes Pitlords make other choices, and we usually have to go with that.

I can even say that I wouldn't be opposed that if Nightbanegod reruns the fight he chooses to have you attack and then begin casting sleep. I just want to get at least that one action that I should have been allowed according to the rules. It doesn't matter to me if you're casting a sleep spell or attacking Aramur at that time, either way I get that one action I feel entitled to.

I should also note I wouldn't stay at 5' since you have that nasty trip attack.

Sorry, I meant to say 10 ft. Note that Aramur's guisarme also has 10 ft. reach and can do trip attacks.

Okay, I just saw the fight and I about to slip into bed, but I have to say a few things....

1. I asked that if the Drider was using ranged attacks, use blur. Maybe I should have been more specific, but a WAND of MM falls in line with ranged attacks.

2. Nessa has a Brooch of Shielding. I tried to track everything as best as possible, but I did not count [33 Hp + 10 Vigor + 20 Vigor + 101 Points of MM Soak + 30 Points of Fast Healing =] 194 Points of Damage Taken during the fight. That would've been insane damage! (Mainly no healing during rounds 11, 12, 13)

3. There are no rolls, so I cannot say anything about the Drider's ability to see Nessa while sniping.

4. There are no die rolls listed anywhere. Nessa ALWAYS heals 2 HP per round, so there is always the possibility of coming back from anything short of -10.

5. I didn't see where Nessa attempted to summon another mephit.

6. Driders have double standard treasure, so 2,600 x 2 = 5,200. 5,200/3 = 1,733gp.

7. If it took 2 rounds to regain focus, and no success, what happened to the Rapid Shot assault? Although I am to blame for not making it clear, the sniping was the only aspect to be within 30'. Everything should have fallen to the default height of 120' This allows for 2 rounds of feather falling and gaining 4HP in the process.

Location is not listed, so I cannot guess what distances were, what altitudes were, etc. Nessa never used HIS breath weapon either. I guess that is it for now. I am sleepy and will have to review it at a later point in time.....

Hi Waywreth,

If you saw Nightbanegod's current rewrite, you'll probably guess that I still to have some serious problems with it due to errors.

Additionally, I just saw (the error was there the first time, but I did not notice it before) that Casgish did only 27 damage in total (9+4+7+7), and Aramur has 28 hp. (without raging), which means that even in the first version of the battle, he should have not been killed!

I have PM'ed Nightbanegod with the outstanding issues. I just hope he can and will make the corrections.

Didn't make a gladiator with knockdown to not have him use it.....

In my (Aramur vs. Casgish) and LLMadCow's fight (Nessa vs. Drider), we both have gladiators that are still alive according to the posted battle results, but declared dead/defeated by the Pitlord anyway (in my case probably an adding error, in LLMadCow's case probably forgotten about the brooch of shielding).

Awards for an ECL 5 fight are 1500xp/1600gp for the winner and 500xp/533gp for the loser.

@LLMadCow

Fight awards are based on the ECL fought and are capped so Nexa can only get at max 700xp/866 for a loss regardless of what the monsters treasure is (exception is if the opponent brought in allies which are adjustments after the cap).

I do not believe that Magic Missiles are subject to the concealment miss chances due to something like blur.

Quote from SRD under Magic Missle:

The missile strikes unerringly, even if the target is in melee combat or has less than total cover or total concealment. Specific parts of a creature can’t be singled out. Inanimate objects are not damaged by the spell.

A few more things about the Fight between Nessa Tempe and the Drider.....

The Bold Red has been added by LLMC
Cloak of Chrisma +2 4,000gp
Wand of Magic Missile [9] 6,750gp
Scroll of Greater Invisibility 700gp
Scroll of Summon Monster IIII 375gp
Scroll of Summon Monster IIII 375gp
Scroll of Wall of Ice 700gp
Scroll of Animate Dead 1,050gp
Scroll of Animate Dead 1,050gp
Scroll of Fly 375gp
Scroll of Shield 25gp
Scroll of Mage Armor 25gp
Scroll of Blur 150gp
Scroll of Cat’s Grace 150gp
Scroll of Obscuring Mist 25gp
Potion of SoF 50gp

This adds up to: 15,800gp!!!!!

WOW

Drider = Challenge Rating 7
Drider = Double Treasure [2,600 * 2 = 5,200gp]

Unless I am missing something that means that this drider has 10,600gp more than it should have.

Also, there is the issue of: Are the monsters in monster fights limited to spending no more than 1/3 of their gp on any single item, in the same manner that PC's are? If so, that limits the BIG TICKET items to 1,700 or so, enough to buy a wand of MM I.

Either way, a Wand of MM IX is right out of the question, with the most he could have had being a Wand of MM V, if there is no cap on % of gold per item. A Wand of MM V can do NO MORE THAN [3D4 + 3 = 15] damage for MAX, or an average of 10.5 per hit.

If there is a cap on spending, it's going to take the Drider 50 rounds to deal an average of 175 points [Max 250] of damage, at the same time Nessa is going to heal 100 points. At a MAX of [5 - 2 = 3] damage per round, Nessa can easily last 20 Rounds due to the Brooch, an additional 6 rounds due to Vigor, followed by 11 rounds of direct HP Damage, at which point he falls. 37 rounds.

With AVERAGE damage 3.5, this turns into: 28 Rounds due to the Brooch, an additional 8 rounds due to Vigor, followed by 10 rounds of direct HP Damage, at which point he falls. 46 Rounds.

This is going with only using 1/2 of the Vigor available, and since the Drider has no way of healing, there is no reason not to use the extra Vigor to win the fight. 866 gp vs 5,200gp??? Oh yeah.

I would GREATLY appreciate some reply to this, grid co-ordinates, die rolls, the attempt to Summon a Mephit, etc.

I added in the 9 dmg you did to my familiar... so yes, you would've only taken 27 not 28. Of course since in theory my horse was attacking it would've done some damage, but then again if it didn't your knockdown attack had great potential.

That's fine with me, maybe a rematch at lvl 4 or something?

I don't think your horse would have attacked me, since I didn't attack it or its rider (yet), so you would have to spend a move action and succeed at a DC 10 Handle Animal check to make it attack before Aramur got his first strike (which coupled with Knockdown and the extra attack from Improved Trip could have killed you before your horse got a chance to act). And since the horse can attack from 5 ft., but you cannot attack with you lance from 5 ft., it wouldn't be very sensible to try and coerce your horse to attack, I think.

just realized i missed a part of casgishes tactics... if your first attack didnt kill aramur you were supposed to draw and cast sleep... which you could do without interruption since he was stunned then you would CDG without problem from the horse since it is also stunned.

then aramur would lose the fight based on these rolls
will save vs sleep 3 so your asleep (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=161805)

Nightbanegod, as I stated before, I am not opposed to a redo where Casgish tries to cast sleep instead of attacking. A few things though:

- Casting sleep takes 1 round. You start it in one round as a full round action (no move actions allowed), and finish in the next.
- He needs two hands free to cast sleep from a scroll
- He has to draw the scroll, which costs a move action.
- He has to stow the lance, which costs a move action.

I think this means he cannot finish casting the spell before Aramur gets his first action...
In any case, because Aramur's the horse can still attack and defend, there would be no chance for a CDG.

EDIT: By the way, I think changing chosen tactics in hindsight to achieve the same battle result is not entirely proper, but as I said, in this case I am not opposed to it, since I think it is what Waywreth Casgish wanted to do. Also, I read the rules, and if a fight is edited too late, the previous result stands. Sooner or later I think we all get a loss like this, its part of the game....

By the rules you win. I am grateful if Nightbanegod is looking at it again, but as I said before, since it is past the deadline, you should record a win, and I will record a loss...

There comes a time when you have to stop salvaging a fight, even when all concerned parties agree mistakes or errors have been made. There will always be rules errors, calculation mistakes and faulty tactics interpretations, and sometimes they cause you to lose a fight. A loss on my record that might have been a win is not the end of the world, there are still many interesting fights to look forward to.
