Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

News and Whatnot

New Rulings - Courtroom
The following rulings were voted for by MWB, Zevox, Telin, crazy, and Erithmu. Sauro voted against.

You can not find invisible creatures merely by moving through thier square- they can merely opt to let you pass by. The only exception is if you end movement in the same square as an invisible creature- you will then effectively know an invisible creature was there because you will be "moved" to the last legal square you occupied.
A Shadowdancer/Assassin's HiPS does not require concealment or cover to use- it merely requires a shadow nearby that is not their own. This shadow does not have to be visible to the observer or even grant any sort of concealment itself.

The Council Decisions/Revelations

Current Topics

Courtroom - Sauro wishes an elder decision on using an intelligent cohort as a mount. [and what tricks/training it requires]
Council - There is a discussion on how quickly you should be able to aquire ethereal equipment.
Courtroom- The rules for Ride and Handle Animal are under discussion.

These are topics that have died down but had nothing come of them. Personally? I blame the terrorists.

Council - Mechanics of the "Awaken" spell is currently being discussed in the council.
Courtroom- Good grief, we're talking about the Bag of Tricks again. Sooner or later Lelenia will level enough that we can put these discussions behind us. :-)
Council- Delay rules are still being discussed.

Check out the Courtroom and Council to join in all the fun!

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders. New idea: let's not insult anyone, ok? :)

Pairings
GM MindWandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Link to pairings.
Make sure that your character is not in prison.

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help.
You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool (http://wormhole.ath.cx/coco/coco_dist.php) should suffice.
Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
And finally, here is a handy Rewards Calculator (http://joeh.org/~wb/coco/rewards.html).

If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

Gakhnalak Strongjaw (MindWandererB) vs Thiel's Loyal Retainers (Erithmu, SauroGrenom) is up. Still need to add rewards - but wanted to get the fight up.

@MWB - I had some confusion about how you wanted to proceed (whether leaving Blurgta behind or moving ahead of her) - I decided to keep with her until sight was established and then rush in. I'm sorry if this is not what you intended, but I don't see anything in your tactics to indicate either way.

Also - I wasn't sure if I read your buffing rounds correctly - though I suspect it wouldn't really change much (since they mostly got dispelled anyway).

Please let me know if there are any issues with the fight.

@MWB:

Max Ribbleton (lonewolf) and Mineau Guwango (Turanson) vs. Unknown MonsterEL7 : TelinArtho [Temple] [Inter-League]

Shouldn't the monster be EL9?

I hadn't anticipated a flying dire wolf. Given that, I think anything I did find wrong would be moot. Thanks for the run.Shouldn't the monster be EL9?Yes.

Okay - this week's monster fights should be... interesting:

Besthirah vs 1 Small Winged Biped.

Max and Mineau are up against 4 Greater Barghests.

Have a nice day.

I noticed a minor thing that'll be important for the rewards. Lordrum's 7th level, so his mount has a duration of 14 hrs not 12 hrs... I think...

@JackSnape: Monster rolled for Uguudok. 1 Small winged quadrupedal Dragon.

Also, you can't exceed your expendables cap for any reason; you're going to have to choose only a few of those scrolls to craft so you don't go over. Since you have 275 gp worth of scrolls at the moment, choose up to 175gp worth (including craft discount), and specify which you want to keep in your tactics PM.

Monsters cannot have any items which are unavailable to PCs without credits

not 100% true - he can craft more since he gets it only after his fight, but he can't keep more after the 3fc. else it would be impossible for a crafter to recraft things he knows he'll likely use in his last fight as well, making him sit out pretty much.

I don't think I would deprive a balor of his flaming vorpal sword- isn't that the same sort of deal? Hmmm...

The problem is that I have no clue how memory loss arrows should be mitigated. Without memory loss or sleep arrows, this guy has practically no chance of winning vs Marius since his damage outputs are so low & all I have to do is breath on him to win.

If an elder(or MWB, optimally) could step in and say something, I'd appreciate it.

My opinion is that the pixie should have access to both types of arrows, but that the memory loss arrows should have no mechanical effect in the arena.

First off - a flaming vorpal sword would be available without credits.

Secondly - I would just make the assumption that memory loss arrows would have no effect in the arena.

Whether sleep arrows are allowed or not is debateable - personally I don't see much harm in it; alternatively - the pixie could purchase regular sleep arrows and leave all question out of it.

Hmm- has anyone seen an errata for the greater barghest? Mass Enlarge is listed as one of its SLAs - but since that spell changed to Mass Enlarge Person - it no longer works on outsiders. Usually, they made specific exceptions (see Janni and Earth Mephit) - but I don't see such an exception for the greater barghest.

The funny thing about it is that in 3.0 - Greater Barghests didn't get more SLAs - so its tough to say that the developers didn't "update" the ability since it didn't exist.

I guess Greater Barghests go around and enlarge their opponents to make it more of a sport :)

This is more or less what I thought would be fair. I've sent my tactics in assuming all of this is true (it has sleep arrows, memory loss arrows have no effect for arena fights)

If I'd had some better rolls in there, I could have put in a decent showing. I stand by my earlier assessment. If only blindsense or scent worked on incorporeal creatures, or if he had more equipment (so he couldn't assume it all). But thanks for the run.

Thanks for the run. I tried to keep things clear, if not simple.

The link to the roller is missing; the correct link is here (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=2530).

Ralein's Free Activity is Profession (Butcher) for 120 gp, not Guard.

As far as I know, impromptu teams don't automatically start in the same square. It doesn't matter, as Ralein was actually helped by this (forcing Mekhoar into melee makes me almost unhittable with dodge).

@Tunagolem: Change the forum skin you're using. As odd as it sounds, the bug only affects the "Wizards Community Default" skin.

As far as I know, impromptu teams don't automatically start in the same square.

That one was changed not to long ago, since it delivers a big disadvantage to the team not starting within the same square, and almost always ends up in two pairs of tactics be written
a) if we start in the same square
b) if not.

it makes the pitlord's tactic-reading unneccessarily hard, and also tactics writing is harder. that's why there was that elder-decision against separate starting squares.

Uguudok vs 1 Wyrmling Blue Dragon is up. Note to self: Do not antagonise creatures with a 100ft fly speed and twice your hit dice.

EDIT: I have a question regarding the Lorian vs Owen fight. Lorian has prebuffed his Ring of Invisibility, but the item references the spell, which has a duration of 1 minute/level. The item has a CL of 3, so there's no way the prebuff can survive the time roll. Does Lorian start invisible? It rather dramatically affects the fight.

Effects with a duration of "permanent" must be listed under the Pre-buff section and also be listed as part of your equipment. They do not count against your available spell levels per fight nor against your prebuffs. An exception is the Polymorph Any Object spell (see Rules: Miscellaneous).QED.

ninja'd!

due to coco rules, any effect that can be done as "at will" can be prebuffed. i don't like that rule, but it is present. so lorian _can_ start invisible.

when creating the rules, it was assumed that in the waiting time, you could simply switch on the ring every minute.

I never specified shoot Soren on Line of Sight. I knew I was facing a druid, and I thought a couple of sneak attacks could handle summons and a companion. Chiefly, Shaela should take shots at Nanook in rounds 2 and 3, possibly flat-footed. The Round 4 attack, if moved, would hit Nanook's flat-footed AC, and anything much above minimum damage on a sneak attack will leave him down after the critical hit next round. That changes things significantly.

I would argue that while drinking a potion does indeed draw an AoO, no concentration check should be necessary when dealt damage during the action. Also since he is going to draw AoOs anyway, there is no reason why Max shouldnt move first and drink the potion after that.

Lord Lorian vs Owen Ir'Tolden is causing major headaches. Owen didn't include contingencies for Lorian leaving Super Wing at home. Lorian didn't include contingencies for the others turning invisible. Both sides had to improvise.

The only part of Owen's tactics that could actually be used with no idea of where Lorian was is "cast See Invisibility", so he did that. Nest cast Invisiblity Sphere as per his "owen didn't nuke him first" actions. Lorian had no effective tactics, so I tried to improvise and went for Touchsight + Dimension Door. This failed (Continuity 1), and when I approached Templer10 for surrender, he pointed out his Hand of Glory. This creates Continuity 2. Now we can have the argument about which one works.
Erithmu

05-05-08, 06:23 PM
@Callix: Thank you for posting the fight. I understand what you are dealing with. Within the context of my tactics I would say Nest goes with the glitterdust option or tries to start casting SM5, and I'll race Lorian with Wraith attacking w/ light rays (in the Notes section).

I'm not sure what the damage is on a TK maneuver either to grapple for damage either. But I'll remain out of the conversation aside from these comments.

If this were fight-by-post ... I would do something different, but I can only go by tactics.

Well, i read it this way

From there, if I can't hear Soren, head in via the broad (south) road. Single move and ready to shoot [Soren] on LOS. If I actually find him, then just shoot.
as you never mentioned Nanook.

I would argue that while drinking a potion does indeed draw an AoO, no concentration check should be necessary when dealt damage during the action. Also since he is going to draw AoOs anyway, there is no reason why Max shouldnt move first and drink the potion after that.

First off - the Greater barghests prebuffed Invisibility sphere - so you had no way of knowing you were based.

Secondly - here's the snippet from the rules - something I think has been done wrong up until now - I just saw it in the rules this week (by some freak accident...):

Activation: Drinking a potion or applying an oil requires no special skill. The user merely removes the stopper and swallows the potion or smears on the oil. The following rules govern potion and oil use.
Drinking a potion or using an oil on an item of gear is a standard action. The potion or oil takes effect immediately. Using a potion or oil provokes attacks of opportunity. A successful attack (including grappling attacks) against the character forces a Concentration check (as for casting a spell). If the character fails this check, she cannot drink the potion. An enemy may direct an attack of opportunity against the potion or oil container rather than against the character. A successful attack of this sort can destroy the container.

My grandfather had a fall today; he's in hospital, so I have very little time before deadline. The playtest fight will almost certainly be delayed, and Lorian vs Owen will probably be late unless someone else is willing to take it on. All the necessary stuff is posted in Battles, if anyone wants it. Otherwise, I'll do it tomorrow most likely.

You could give Max a Listen vs Move silently check to notice that someone is closeby.

I stand corrected on the second issue.

I would do something different, but I can only go by tactics.

hope your grandfather feels better.

now on the issue itself - there seem to be no argument from Rith that see invisibility should be used by both parties, and about what nest should do then - Iam not entirly sure what he should do in this situation from the tactics - probably wall of stone since that can block LOS (so could stop the TK manuver) and is mentioned in the tactics.

note that 1 round after owen gets TK grappeled nest will be 2 probably so only need to decide for that first round.

about glitterdust - if it happen/works - note that the TK manuver on owen doesnt depend on lorians sight since it's maintanied by spike and that lorian has counters for that in later rounds (synasthate pwoerstone).

dentik vs korwald is up. the river's cover AC bonus kind of made that one very one-sided...

Thanks for running!

btw: Hippogriffs do understand common, so Korwald doesnt need to use Handle animal to order it around, he can just say what he wants it to do.

Checking the rolls is pretty much impossible too. Please take the time to lable them correctly next time.

Not being able to understand each other isn't why HA checks are necessary- otherwise you could use them to relate commands to soldiers who you don't share a common language with :). They are there for creatures with an int of 3 or less, so the 'griff needs them to understand.

edit-
as far as labelling the roller, I did a pretty good job except the rounds got mixed up a bit. I think there are two rounds in "round 9" and the rounds are offset by 1 for whatever reason. Sorry about that. And the autocomplex on my browsers keep messing me up on that screen, too...I need to figure out how to turn that off in safari. I'll ask rith later tonight.

Revised Shaela vs Soren (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=15781164&postcount=1969) is up

A few comments
1) No attack in round 2, as you double move.
2) In round 3 you could have had a sneak attack, but the dog spotted you.
3) In round 8 I decided it was well worth to rapid shot an almost dead dog rather than tumbling away and readying. Feel free to tell me if you don't like the decision. I wouldn't want to change it again, as you wouldn't survive the following attack and your readied shot would miss (2 missing attacks for you, actually)

Never mind; Lorian vs Owen is up. Rewards in the morning. And yes, I replaced the Strength modifier with Intelligence on telekinetic grapple damage. It says "everywhere", and it means everywhere.

I could run the extra rounds of Lorian moving over and CDGing Owen repeatedly, but Wraith's luck thus far doesn't suggest that it will matter.

@CrazyArtificer: Thanks for the rerun. No complaints this time except that I lost ;).

However, your tactics have nothing about what to do if you are able to detect someone close by. Moving and drinking the potion might be beneficial here because you know you'll get hit and be unable to drink the potion - but without a pinpoint, you cannot be sure you are based - and even if you did - there's nothing to say that is what you would want to do.

Now on the matter of pinpointing - that would be impossible for you - Listen +11 vs MS +14.

@dulsi: About the Darian vs Salamander fight:

Thanks for running!

no reason to edit anything, but I have a few notes anyway:

- You missed Darians running Share Pain.
- I asked for 10pp Energy balls, while you only used 7pp ones.
- 7pp greater endowed energy balls would only have a DC of 23.
- Darians Concentration modifier is +19, not +9 => he autosuceeds checks to recover his psionic focus.
- The DC for the Energy missiles from the Droje is only 14.

EDIT:
One thing needs to be fixed though: you missed Darians Political Career +26%, increasing his rewards to 3780xp & 7308gp.

In the Dimension Door SRD it stats that

After using this spell, you can’t take any other actions until your next turn.

So I'm not sure if they could even take an AOO

AoO is not an action. since you are not flat-footed after dimension dooring, you can take AoOs, but you cannot speak, move or do a quickened spell - simply nothing on your turn any more, and no immediate actions.

This was asked and addressed during Mineau's fight with the barghests. Since there was no change since that time, I didn't see the need to change that now. If you want a ruling on it though - feel free to take it to the courtroom.

Using See Invis is easy, using D.Door to teleport straight up (400 +18*40= 1120 ft + Diagonal) ... not so easy.

gg T10 ... might have to look to do a separate fight thread next time ... fights get nasty at this level.

It doesn't. I wrote tactics poorly and I didn't have Nest go for any offensive spells. I needed something like Nest casting Stinking cloud in there to be effective (and it would have since he wouldn't have been able to switch it to his psi crystal).

psicrystals only have sight out to 40'.[and then it just stops] Why would it be able to maintain a power on you? it looks like it was more than 40' away at all times, so the Telekinetic Manuver should stop the moment Lorian moves it to his psicrystal. [no LOS on target]

Sighted (Ex): Although it has no physical sensory organs, a psicrystal can telepathically sense its environment as well as a creature with normal vision and hearing. Darkness (even supernatural darkness) is irrelevant, as are areas of supernatural silence, though a psicrystal still can’t discern invisible or ethereal beings. A psicrystal’s sighted range is 40 feet.

Also, TK Maneuver doesn't make an attack roll, so I thought it wouldn't break invisibility. As it won't affect anything, I won't edit, but I would like to know for future reference.

So ... Lorian: 43+25-8.333 = 59.667
Owen: 13+8.333 = 21.333

As far as I know, you don't need line-of-sight to concentrate on a power. I think you just need line-of-effect. I could be missing a rule somewhere, though...

If you click on this link - can you edit?

In any case, I think these are the rewards - since I want to have Dentik crafting I figured I would do them up real quick:

Dentik loses and gains 600xp +12.5% (-12.5% (elementals) + 25% (horse and hippogriff)) = 675xp / 750gp.
Dentik's on his third fight and used no expendables.

Korwald wins and gains 1800xp + 30.5% (-25% (horse and hippogriff) + 12.5% (elementals) + 18% (politics) = 2349xp / 2610gp.
Time Between Fights: 3 hrs
Prebuffs/Ongoing Effects:
Items Used: Scroll of Bull's Strength (CL3), Scroll of Bless (CL2),
Spells or Powerpoints Used: Divine Favor
x/day Abilities Used: Defensive Precognition PLA, Force Screen PLA,
Free Activity: Profession + 146.28gp
