| McJarvis01-09-08, 04:46 PM | boPlease don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match. News & Whatnot The Council has decided to begin publishing its predictions of the outcomes of gladiator fights. Once the pairings are rolled, look back to this thread to see the Council's predictions. So far in 2008 The Council has been correct 46% of the time. [13 fights observed] In this weeks fights, the council has been correct 62% of the time [10/16 fights observed] Color-highlighted fights are included in ECL statistics below. Green colored fights were correct Red colored fights were incorrect ECL3 -=Council Correct 3/9 Times=- 33% Undurion (Durzulgor) vs. Calidor Tyrbelel (Nabuchadnezzar) Varuxor (CrazyArtificer) vs. Ivellios Marrow (Sjiggie) Lelenia Rovan (whitebaron) vs. Thunderim o'Gunarr (Nabuchadnezzar) Eland (CrazyArtificer) vs. Jog Stonebreaker (Thaylen) Gimrel Sithraldor (CrazyArtificer) vs. Ryalyth Lorn'elth (Kaigan) ECL4 -=Council Correct 6/8 Times=- 75% Vivi (Dr.Funk) vs. Thorell Runesmith (McJarvis) Marius (McJarvis) vs. Darrgon the Summoner (TelinArtho) Durzulgor I (Durzulgor) vs. Rolf (Dr.Funk) Korwald Barandar (lonewolf) vs. Morro Earthshaker (dulsi) Mineau Guwango (Turanson) vs. Verren FireStarter (whitebaron) ECL5 -=Council Correct 1/2 times=- 50% Ialgo (TelinArtho) vs. Snaga (The Dread Dormammu) ECL6 -=Council Correct 1/2 times=- 50% Flutterthought (MindWandererB) vs. Valanthe Valassar (Sjiggie) ECL7 -=Council Correct 2/3 times=- 66% Darian Thorne (lonewolf) vs. Lady Liara (templer10) VarjoECL 9 (Stormwind) vs. The Eternal Dreamless Sleep (Party) and Gakhnalak Strongjaw (MindWandererB) ECL9 -=Council Correct 1/1 times=- 100% Aquin (TelinArtho) vs. Arden Tarmik (Zevox) ECL11 -=Council Correct 1/1 times=- 100% Archdevil Asran (Zevox) vs. Kraegin (TelinArtho) ECL12 -=Council Correct 0/1 times=- 0% ECL13 -=Council Correct 1/2 times=- 50% Lord Lorian (templer10) vs. Owen Ir'Tolden (Erithmu) Rules of Gladius All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius. It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2. Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders. Pairings GM MindwandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline. Link to pairings. Make sure that your character is not in prison. Pitlording You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight. If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help. You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete. If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool (http://wormhole.ath.cx/coco/coco_dist.php) should suffice. Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold. If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact. Comments & Concerns Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread. Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords. Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN! If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius! |
| templer1001-09-08, 04:50 PM | This week only - Expect the Epic battle of the ECL 13's, Lord lorian vs Owen + Friends. I completly expect to get my A$$ kicked six ways to sunday. |
| Erithmu01-09-08, 04:53 PM | Ya know ... I've been sitting here and trying to decide 'which' way to kill you and, which allies I should leave alive ... You do have a chance I hear Disentegrate and a failed fort save = Lots of damage. I speak from being on the delivering end of that ... 40d6 is lots of fun to roll. |
| templer1001-09-08, 05:01 PM | Ya know ... I've been sitting here and trying to decide 'which' way to kill you and, which allies I should leave alive ... You do have a chance I hear Disentegrate and a failed fort save = Lots of damage. I speak from being on the delivering end of that ... 40d6 is lots of fun to roll. I Would have had a much better chance with Longshot but he Leveled (more or less by accident), So ill just have to do my best. BTW - caster level 17? ouch. |
| Erithmu01-09-08, 05:10 PM | Longshot scares me some ... but I think I have about a 50/50 vs Longshot. Owen has a long way to go before 14 too so you might be waiting. Consider this ... 'research' |
| TelinArtho01-09-08, 05:24 PM | I'm more curious about how ECL11 and ECL9 will work out: ECL11: Kraegin by himself ECL9: Aquin, Varjo and Arden. Could be Aquin vs Varjo vs Arden in an all vs all; Kraegin with a monster fight Could be Aquin in a monster fight and Kraegin in an interleague vs Varjo and Arden Or could be someone else with a monster fight, Aquin vs Varjo or Arden and Kraegin in a monster fight... In any case - more active characters this week for me than usual (or at least "usual for recently" - I still don't have 8+ active...). |
| MindWandererB01-09-08, 05:47 PM | Kraegin isn't by himself...Asran is returning to the fray. |
| TelinArtho01-09-08, 05:49 PM | Yeah - I just noticed that. How unfortunate... well - let's see how that one turns out... now where is my dismissal spell... (oh yeah - I didn't memorize it BAH!) |
| MindWandererB01-09-08, 06:40 PM | Pairings done. ECL 7 was a pain in the butt--every combination resulted in either a recent rematch or someone up against a team he's in. I did my best. Edit: Actually, hold that thought... I think I have a fix.... Edit 2: Done. It's not quite a rematch.... |
| lonewolf01-09-08, 06:42 PM | Darian Thorne (lonewolf) vs. Lady Liara (templer10) : templer10 [City] This fight needs a change of pitlord. Templer "might" be a bit biased on that one. ;) |
| whitebaron01-09-08, 06:42 PM | hmmm The Eternal Dreamless Sleep (Party) vs. Gakhnalak Strongjaw (MindWandererB) : whitebaron [Plains] their title lines are set ready to jan 2? but at least it will be in the plains. nice easy fight guys, right? right? *g* edit@mwb: you just killed the character roster... edit2: obviously he realized it |
| MindWandererB01-09-08, 06:59 PM | CRAP Crap crap crap crap crap. I saved the pairings over the roster. And I haven't backed it up in a long time. Fortunately, Telin made a copy not too long ago. But this is going to take me a while to fix. My apologies to everyone. All gladiators, please include a link to your character sheet along with your tactics. In the meantime, I'll copy Telin's old one so you have something to work with. |
| lonewolf01-09-08, 07:02 PM | wait a second I still have it open in a window. Maybe I can save ot from there. |

So they shouldn't have been repaired this week, I suspect. |

| MindWandererB01-09-08, 07:29 PM | WB is right. @lonewolf: Thank you! Formatting or not, that saves my butt. I'll have to hunt down the links for new characters (although the google archive helps with that), but that's a lot better than recalculating all the powerratings. |

I have the page open and can get them all for you now, while I wait for monster info to be posted. |
| Zevox01-09-08, 07:56 PM | Yeah - I just noticed that. How unfortunate... well - let's see how that one turns out... now where is my dismissal spell... (oh yeah - I didn't memorize it BAH!) Such a pity, too, since Asran himself is actually vulnerable to that (the one weakness I decided to accept on him in order to give him the RP benefit of being classified as an extraplanar outsider rather than a native one as most Half-Fiends are). Oh, and you'll find a nasty surprise in my free activity too  (never thought Asran would actually use that, but I had nothing better to do with his skills, and it was appropriate to his character, sooo...). Sorry, but I noticed Kraegin was ready last night, and this was just too conveniently appropriate a way to get Asran back into the arena to pass up. Odd that both of our fights this week are in the city, though. Still, should make things interesting, since we can both buff to our heart's content before battle is joined. Thats probably a bad thing for Aquin, but we'll see, eh? Zevox |
| MindWandererB01-09-08, 08:32 PM | Which new characters do you need? I have the page open and can get them all for you now, while I wait for monster info to be posted. I'm almost done with what I have. I'll post it in a little while, and you can give me the ones that have no links. |
| MindWandererB01-09-08, 08:47 PM | Done (phew), except for those links. Credits tomorrow. Edit: Forgot the google archive, that gives me a few more. Hold on. Edit 2: Okay, now I'm out. Six new characters for which I lack links. |

| CrazyArtificer01-10-08, 08:53 AM | Dulsi, sent you Eland's tactics |
| CrazyArtificer01-10-08, 08:55 AM | News & Whatnot The Council has decided to begin publishing its predictions of the outcomes of gladiator fights. Once the pairings are rolled, look back to this thread to see the Council's predictions. So far in 2008 The Council has been correct 46% of the time. [13 fights observed] ECL3 Undurion (Durzulgor) vs. Calidor Tyrbelel (Nabuchadnezzar) Varuxor (CrazyArtificer) vs. Ivellios Marrow (Sjiggie) Lelenia Rovan (whitebaron) vs. Thunderim o'Gunarr (Nabuchadnezzar) Eland (CrazyArtificer) vs. Jog Stonebreaker (Thaylen) Gimrel Sithraldor (CrazyArtificer) vs. Ryalyth Lorn'elth (Kaigan) Lol, the Council hates me. :D BTW, you should exclude gladiators in the first cycle of fights from your forecasts, as they are more prone to fluctuations in their power score. |
| Nabuchadnezzar01-10-08, 09:02 AM | Lol, the Council hates me. :D BTW, you should exclude gladiators in the first cycle of fights from your forecasts, as they are more prone to fluctuations in their power score. Sigh, you want to exclude me :D |
| lonewolf01-10-08, 09:02 AM | Tactics for Darian and Korwald are away. |
| TelinArtho01-10-08, 09:07 AM | @Sjiggie - tactics for Darrgon and Ialgo have been sent. @templer10 - tactics for Aquin have been sent. |
| CrazyArtificer01-10-08, 09:25 AM | Sigh, you want to exclude me :D eheh.. nothing against you. It's just that 1000 is an arbitrary value and tells nothing about the real value of a gladiator. Even scores gathered in the next 2 fights are prone to high variance. If the purpose of the council is to test the effectiveness of the power-score it's better to exclude those fights as no "history-based" system would be able to predict the outcome, no matter which weights you choose. |
| TelinArtho01-10-08, 09:36 AM | Well, the same argument could be made about all of ECL3, some of ECL4, etc. He's got the ratings broken out by ECL - so that should be just fine. |
| Nabuchadnezzar01-10-08, 09:39 AM | eheh.. nothing against you. That is true indeed. Statistics are trustworthy when you have enough data to analyze, but equipment may be another decisive factor. As an example, I'm going to fight against 2 gladiators, one of which has a Rust Bag of Tricks due to money earnt in previous fights ;) that will be a difficult fight for my dwarven monk, unless he is really lucky  but I'm going to fight with the best tactic I can think of, just I'm not sure on how that bag (or other abilities that may be used limited times per week, such as paladin's Remove Disease) will be recharged: once every single 3FC (that simulates 1 day) or once every 7 3FCs (7 days)? In the first case, that bag is maybe 7 times more valuable than in the SRD  |
| CrazyArtificer01-10-08, 09:42 AM | @TA:I know, but while it's true that the prediction will become more accurate over time, I just think it's too random in the first fights. I see no reason to avoid listing a prediction even for those fights, just do not include them in the calculation to check if the Council is right or not (if the purpose is to verify if the current ranking system works fine). |
| TelinArtho01-10-08, 09:43 AM | To answer your question, it is usable 10 times per week normally. 10 times per week = 4 times per fight up to 10 times per 3FC. So if he uses 4 uses in the first two fights, he will only have 2 uses left in the last fight. If he uses none in the first two fights, he will have all 10 uses left in the last fight. |
| Nabuchadnezzar01-10-08, 09:47 AM | To answer your question, it is usable 10 times per week normally. 10 times per week = 4 times per fight up to 10 times per 3FC. So if he uses 4 uses in the first two fights, he will only have 2 uses left in the last fight. If he uses none in the first two fights, he will have all 10 uses left in the last fight. Problem is... If that bag was "10 times per day" and not "10 times per week" it was the same thing, wasn't it? But theoretically an object usable x times per day may be used 7 more times than an object usable x times per week. That's because I said "In the first case, that bag is maybe 7 times more valuable than in the SRD" |
| TelinArtho01-10-08, 10:00 AM | Well - a 3FC is both a day in time and also a week in time in different circumstances. In the first - you have spells and abilities that are usable x/day. In the latter - you have items and abilities that are usable x/week. This is also where all of the crafting rules are - (ie - you can craft 7000gp worth of magic items in a single full activity). The temporality is unimportant. Keeping an over-arching timeline for the Bag of tricks and other x/week abilities is pretty minor. Bag of Tricks users will usually use less than 1 charge per fight during a 3FC unless their opponent is super-efficient at taking care of the animals; most x/week abilities are not even important in the CoCo (remove disease, for example, is completely useless). While this does increase the "value" of the bag of tricks - it is a pretty rare occurance for it to even come up. Daeren (one of my very early characters) got a Tan Bag of Tricks pretty early on and only got a few uses out of it during his career (including 5 uses during one full-quest as his highest 3-week span usage). If you are concerned about the rampant animals it produces - I heartily recommend a potion of Hide from Animals. |
| Erithmu01-10-08, 10:02 AM | @T10/Telin: Clarification request on Lorian's equipment sent out |
| Nabuchadnezzar01-10-08, 10:05 AM | I'm too late to edit my sheet now, and hide from animal is only a temporary solution if I plan to attack their chief. In fact, one can draw an animal as standard and order him to attack me as move... and these animals lasts for 10 minutes :D I fear a massive usage of 3-4 animals over me, inspired by bardic music :P but let's see... |
| TelinArtho01-10-08, 10:09 AM | Yes - but he can only have one such animal out of the bag at a single moment. If he wants to draw another - he has to get rid of the first animal first (or you do...). Also note that he doesn't have to use the handle animal skill in order to direct the animals (so no move action to direct it) as long as it is within the standard range for the animal to do. If he wants to do something special with it (grapple with an animal that does not do so normally for instance), he would need to - but otherwise, it will attack with efficiency. |
| templer1001-10-08, 10:14 AM | @T10/Telin: Clarification request on Lorian's equipment sent out Answer sent - I actually spent around 22k Gold for just this fight - you should be proud. (Improving my chance from a snowball's chance in hell to just bad). |

| Erithmu01-10-08, 08:11 PM | @Telin: Tactics for Owen away. |
| dulsi01-10-08, 08:48 PM | "Look like that foolish knight wants a rematch," comments the human slaver while leading Morro in chains. "Easy money," replies the shorter man next to him. He stares over at the knight. Seeing him staring at the knight, Morro calls out to Korwald. "Ruk ai ak din. Kaz ai ar kad. Non ij. Dun Jun." The dwarf points to the extra bows he now carries. "Quiet!" yells the first man before smacking the dwarf. Morro's tatics have been sent. For those who understand dwarvish, Morro says "Foe, you fought wisely. Dwarves are made of stone. You will never win. Go home." (Or at least the best I could come up with the old dwarvish in dragon #66.) |
| TelinArtho01-10-08, 09:38 PM | Korwald Barandor vs Morro Earthshaker is up. Well one side was wishing for crits... too bad they came from the wrong side. |

| Sjiggie01-11-08, 08:50 AM | I still need the tactics from Snaga and Marius. If I don't have them on time I will run the fight on default tactics or have you surrender. -Sjiggie |
| whitebaron01-11-08, 08:57 AM | missing tactics too, for Asran and Ryalyth all others - received. |
| dulsi01-11-08, 09:49 AM | Eland's tatics received still waiting for Jog Stonebreaker. lonewolf sorry about the loss. Hopefully we won't keep doing this every level. |
| lonewolf01-11-08, 10:15 AM | lonewolf sorry about the loss. Hopefully we won't keep doing this every level. The thing is, I think with every level Korwalds chances against Morro will increase. Without the cheesy tactics, there was no chance for Korwald to win the lvl3 fight, and at lvl4 he had a fighting chance(small one). Next level with Mind thrusts, Divine Might and a heavy warhorse things might look even better for Korwald. |
| McJarvis01-11-08, 10:20 AM | I still need the tactics from Snaga and Marius. If I don't have them on time I will run the fight on default tactics or have you surrender. -Sjiggie Ah, yes. I've been taking my time on writing marius's tactics due to it being the first time I've faced an opponent of this sort. [Can you believe I've never faced a summoner before, ever? :-O ] |
| Sjiggie01-11-08, 10:22 AM | Seems hard to me that you have never faced a summoner before with any of your characters here. I'll see the tactics when you're ready and then you will see the result when I'm ready with the fight. ;) :P |
| dulsi01-11-08, 10:29 AM | The thing is, I think with every level Korwalds chances against Morro will increase. I know. I look forward to that. I just thought it would be funny if we keep encountering each other at each level. Hopefully you will be able to provide Morro a reason to reassess Korwald. I want to say something encouraging when we met again but Morro just couldn't consider Korwald a threat after that first battle. |
| TelinArtho01-11-08, 10:34 AM | Ah, yes. I've been taking my time on writing marius's tactics due to it being the first time I've faced an opponent of this sort. [Can you believe I've never faced a summoner before, ever? :-O ] Sounds like I need to activate a few more Denthians... And to echo some of the others - I am still missing tactics from templer10 for the ECL13 fight... |
| templer1001-11-08, 11:09 AM | Telin - just sent them - in 2 parts - Fight Should be eithr VERY short - or slightly longer But i doubt more then 5 or 6 rounds - IAm betting around a 10% win for me. |
| TelinArtho01-11-08, 11:19 AM | Heh - looks like it is going to be a fun fight... If I get done with my other stuff today - I'll see if I can fit it in. Otherwise, I might let you sweat the weekend :) |
| templer1001-11-08, 11:24 AM | Heh - looks like it is going to be a fun fight... If I get done with my other stuff today - I'll see if I can fit it in. Otherwise, I might let you sweat the weekend :) Mind posting the tactics anyway? |
| CrazyArtificer01-11-08, 11:27 AM | Dr. Funk, I'm still waiting your tactics for Rolf |
| TelinArtho01-11-08, 11:29 AM | Mind posting the tactics anyway? Yes I do :P I prefer not to post tactics ahead of time since if I have questions, they are easier to resolve if the players involved can't see the others' tactics. While I have skimmed over both of your tactics, I haven't really dug deep into them to know if there are any issues or clarifications yet. |
| Zevox01-11-08, 12:04 PM | @ whitebaron - Tactics for Asran (vs Kraegin) have been PMed. First set of tactics I've done in a long time that required 2 PMs to fit. But given the nature of the fight (a team of devils vs a summoner), I suppose its not too surprising. I hope to see some interesting things in that fight. Zevox |

Stable A character who was dying but who has stopped losing hit points and still has negative hit points is stable. The character is no longer dying, but is still unconscious. If the character has become stable because of aid from another character (such as a Heal check or magical healing), then the character no longer loses hit points. He has a 10% chance each hour of becoming conscious and disabled (even though his hit points are still negative). If the character became stable on his own and hasn’t had help, he is still at risk of losing hit points. Each hour, he has a 10% chance of becoming conscious and disabled. Otherwise he loses 1 hit point. I would have rolled upon becoming stable, and then Undurion could have taken move actions to either push Luinil or order his familiar to attack the other gladiator. Given I had a few more minutes to work on the fight it seemed fun to see what would have happened. |

Ill check for ride for cover in a sec, and the Entangle did negate the Charge but he still had enough move simply Base and attack since it doent stop him moving and attacking, and now that i think about it he didnt actually need to move - net range is 10, and his reach is 10. |

| whitebaron01-11-08, 02:05 PM | @ca: it's one check per HOUR. so in one hour, the other fighter would have found it by doing a full scan of the arena. ;) undurion could not have awakened before that first hour. :) |

| TelinArtho01-11-08, 02:13 PM | TELIN - what's the stats on that cheese factory you call a net? Net: A net is used to entangle enemies. When you throw a net, you make a ranged touch attack against your target. A net’s maximum range is 10 feet. If you hit, the target is entangled. An entangled creature takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run. If you control the trailing rope by succeeding on an opposed Strength check while holding it, the entangled creature can move only within the limits that the rope allows. If the entangled creature attempts to cast a spell, it must make a DC 15 Concentration check or be unable to cast the spell. An entangled creature can escape with a DC 20 Escape Artist check (a full-round action). The net has 5 hit points and can be burst with a DC 25 Strength check (also a full-round action). A net is useful only against creatures within one size category of you. A net must be folded to be thrown effectively. The first time you throw your net in a fight, you make a normal ranged touch attack roll. After the net is unfolded, you take a –4 penalty on attack rolls with it. It takes 2 rounds for a proficient user to fold a net and twice that long for a nonproficient one to do so. Since Rope has 2hp/inch normally, when switching it to Deep Crystal, the hp is bumped up to 75 with a hardness of 10. |
| CrazyArtificer01-11-08, 02:14 PM | I'll send Dr Funk a text message. He's actually in school right now - so if you can afford to be lenient with him - I'm sure he'd appreciate it. Of course, if not - he'll just learn to submit his tactics earlier :) Well, that not depends upon me, but upon Durzulgor. If he feels he can wait I have no problems waiting too. |
| TelinArtho01-11-08, 02:14 PM | Looks like Dr Funk is online now - so I would expect tactics shortly. EDIT - It is the pitlord's discretion to allow late tactics. For instance, I usually have no issue with them as long as I know about it beforehand and have been known to accept tactics as late as Monday night... |
| templer1001-11-08, 02:15 PM | Since Rope has 2hp/inch normally, when switching it to Deep Crystal, the hp is bumped up to 75 with a hardness of 10. Broken much? Anyway - IAm going to make a pitlord Call on that then that Zeovx wasnt aware of that when he asked to cut it away - and Ignore that part of his tactics then. |

I think a pitlord needs to apply rules, so I am usually not very happy to skip a deadline. On the other hand if I know the other player has no problems with that, I see no reasons why I should be a stubborn LN. |
| Nabuchadnezzar01-11-08, 02:24 PM | @Nab: yep, It would have been an interesting match, but Lossea was a bit penalized by having just 1 hp :) It's not true indeed... I just read familiar entry on my PHB: he has half master's hp or his own hp, the greater of two. An owl has 4 hp in nature. Should I take this point in the prison? Now that fight is off, can I edit Calidor's sheet to update it? |
| TelinArtho01-11-08, 02:24 PM | The time deadline is specifically for the pitlords. In most cases, the players just want to have their characters fight - so usually a surrender fails that in all respects - but since it is the pitlord who has to deal with the consequences of a late fight (in a credit penalty) - this is something that is completely up to the pitlord. Don't get me wrong - it is a very effective rule to have, but it is the discretion of the pitlord to allow late tactics. I'm thankful I've only invoked it a handful of times in the 300+ fights I have done. |

| Hirumajoe01-11-08, 02:25 PM | Aquin vs arden is done (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14803316&postcount=1634) Just a note, a Charge is a full-round action. Charging is a special full-round action that allows you to move up to twice your speed and attack during the action. However, it carries tight restrictions on how you can move. As a full round action, if it is prevented from finishing after having started, as far as I know, you don't get to switch up it up with other actions, namely a standard attack. Otherwise that leads to odd possibilities... (I start casting a 1 round spell, but it gets interrupted with a ready action, so I go on to cast a standard action spell - since I haven't taken a standard action yet...) |

| TelinArtho01-11-08, 02:34 PM | You are welcome to your opinion on such matters whitebaron - but the fact is that Deepcrystal Bows are pretty commonplace around here. For that matter, the rules themselves are not just cursory on this: Crystal, Deep: Deep crystal is crystal of above-average quality found at the hearts of large veins or deposits of mundane crystal (see below). Deep crystal is renowned for its strength and its psionically resonant nature. Mundane crystal is used for many items of psionic manufacture, such as dorjes, power stones, and psicrystals. Deep crystal is a better grade. While a weapon made of deep crystal is no different from a mundane crystal weapon for a nonpsionic character, a psionic wielder of a deep crystal weapon can focus psionic power through it, increasing the damage that weapon deals. As a free action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity, the wielder can channel psionic power into a melee weapon or ranged weapon made of deep crystal. For 2 power points, the deep crystal weapon deals an extra 2d6 points of damage. The weapon will stay charged for 1 minute or until it scores its next hit. Bows, crossbows, and slings bestow this power on their ammunition. All missile weapons lose this effect if they miss. However, they may be recovered and charged again. Any weapon made of deep crystal costs 1,000 gp more than its noncrystal counterpart. Any item could potentially be made out of deep crystal. Because deep crystal armor is considered to be made out of metal, druids cannot wear it. Deep crystal has 30 hit points per inch of thickness and a hardness of 10. |
| McJarvis01-11-08, 02:36 PM | RE: Deep Crystal The rules contradict themselves. Because deep crystal armor is considered to be made out of metal, druids cannot wear it. Deep crystal has 30 hit points per inch of thickness and a hardness of 10. So the description first says that we should see regular Crystal concerning the physical description(this is just high-grade crystal), and then infers it can be used to make bows/crossbows/slings. Crystal, Mundane: Mundane crystal can be used in place of metal in weapons or armor, using a special forging process. The fortified crystal possesses the properties of a similar masterwork steel weapon or armor, except for visual appearance. Weapons and armor made of mundane crystal cost the same amount to make as their masterwork counterparts. Any item could potentially be made with mundane crystal. Because mundane crystal armor is considered to be made out of metal, druids cannot wear it. Mundane crystal properly forged has 25 hit points per inch of thickness and a hardness of 8. So the end result is on one hand Deep Crystal can only be used to replace metal components of weapons, armor, and items and could potentially be used to make any item(??)- but on the other hand if it's used to make a bow, crossbow, or sling it bestows its special power on the ammunition of the launcher & could potentially be used to create any item. (???) o_O |

Problem is the SRD is pretty explicit on this point. And there are already well accepted deep crystal bows, so a deep crystal rope isn't much father. Maybe think of it as a metal chain link net as opposed to a rope one, now made out of crystal. The sometimes big problem with common sense is that it isn't commonly shared among everyone. Different people will think different things reasonable. Especially in a magical fantasy world where real world physical laws need not apply. I mean its a magical crystal object which starts glowing and causing pain by just thinking at it with your mind. Who knows if it can be made into a supple like material, or turned into links... @ca: unless notified, i reject late tactics, end of story. it should be possible for everyone to at least drop a line THAT they will be late. if they are late, i'll usually extend them towards the point where i can no further delay the fight. but i feel, if a player has not enough manners to drop even a line, he does not deserve to get an extension. of course, there are exceptions. but those are scarce. Of course sometimes people simply forget the deadline. *Raises hand* :D. And you're completely within your rights, especially since pitlording is a volunteer job. I personally tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes you lose access to the internet suddenly (power outages, bad ISP). Sometimes you have a personal emergency show up that requires all of your attention *now*. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, and generally accept tactics up to the point where I'd be running the fight (which can vary anywhere from Friday to Tuesday morning...) I find it doesn't hurt me in any way to do so, but thats just my take on it. |

Using the rules to sundering a worn/carried object? something else? and if so what AC does it have? Well, if he's holding onto the trailing end, then its a weapon being wielded and thus can be sundered. If he's let go, then its an unattended object, with a 0 Dex (-5 AC mod) and an AC based on size. So probably something like 10 -5 + 0 (medium sized) or perhaps +1 (small sized). A net is used to entangle enemies. When you throw a net, you make a ranged touch attack against your target. This is definitely way outside of my expectations when I wrote those tactics. I had no idea the net would have nearly so much hp - I figured there was no way it was even 1 inch thick at any given point, and so it would have less than 30 hp, and also have no idea where Telin got that rope is usually 2 hp/inch; plus I figured that since the net was enveloping Arden he would at worst need to make an attack vs a very low object AC and may even get an auto-hit, not that he would have to make a sunder because his foe happens to be holding a rope attached to the net. Heck, even now I'd argue the net itself shouldn't be considered a wielded/attended object just because hes holding a rope attached to it. Sheesh, I knew those nets were pure cheese the moment I saw them, but this is well beyond my expectations... Zevox |

NO WAY i can swallow that - A situation like this in my opinions can be considered tactics breakdown. |
| McJarvis01-11-08, 03:17 PM | A situation like this in my opinions can be considered tactics breakdown. Some people on these boards consider tactics-breakdown a great way to win against an oponent. I don't, however. If I were pitlord I'd rule it as an untattended object & use zevox's tactics- since it is obviously not clear(no one seems to know), a court ruling will have to be made if telin wishes to push it, and whatever you decide will likely be the rules of thumb for this fight. |
| whitebaron01-11-08, 03:20 PM | @t10: tactics for team have been sent. @deepcrystal: this is a typical example of to much copy pasting. in order to keep the definitions of deepcrystal and other magical enchantments the same, they just used the same wording. they also used the same wording for mundane crystal as they used for admantine - and there are no adamantium bows, obviously. and they said: same for deep as for mundane. so basically, they never wrote something that could work. @telin btw: how did you calculate the net's hitpoints? a steel door has only 90 hps... about the net with chains: probably workable. but a lot more weight. @late tactics: as i already said, of course there are exceptions, but if players send the tactics late without even trying to excuse, i'll never run the fight - its all about teaching them a lesson - if they expect them pitlords to do their work, which is much more than writing tactics to be done properly and on time, you should be willing to do exactly the same. you usually got about 40 hours to write your tactics or send your pitlord a pm why you are going to be late. even in dire stress, there's enough time to make a 1 minute pause to scribble a pm or post in the fotw. comparison: pitlord: ~96h to do about 5-12 hours of work depending on his coco-load player: ~40h to do about 0.5-1 hour of work depending on his active characters |
| Nabuchadnezzar01-11-08, 03:48 PM | I think that a player should send tactics as soon as possible, so the pitlord can run the match earlier and if there are mistakes they can be corrected in time. |

I doubt Durz will be happy with the outcome. [just a warning] edit- here is a rule that backs up my sentiments. The defender has the option to simply avoid you. | McJarvis01-11-08, 04:41 PM | I wasn't aware of that rule. Keep in mind he's in the middle of a full round action (casting enlarge person) Doesn't matter. First of all- you're not denied your dex or anything when casting a spell. You're casting a spell- not incapable of dodging/moving. Secondly- When I first joined CoCo oh-so-many years ago I thought you could just run around alot hoping to run into your invisible opponent in order to detect him. Someone pointed me to that, and then showed me this rule: A creature can grope about to find an invisible creature. A character can make a touch attack with his hands or a weapon into two adjacent 5-foot squares using a standard action. If an invisible target is in the designated area, there is a 50% miss chance on the touch attack. If successful, the groping character deals no damage but has successfully pinpointed the invisible creature’s current location. (If the invisible creature moves, its location, obviously, is once again unknown.) This implies that merely running around is not enough to detect the square a creature is in. I think it's pretty obvious that unless the other guy heard Durz[or otherwise pinpointed him] there's no way he could know where he is. Also note that if he DOES know where he is[through a listen pinpoint or something], he has a 50% miss chance on the attack due to concealment. [Remember: large creatures are not a 10' cube in shape- they just occupy one] |

I think it's pretty obvious that unless the other guy heard Durz[or otherwise pinpointed him] there's no way he could know where he is. Also note that if he DOES know where he is[through a listen pinpoint or something], he has a 50% miss chance on the attack due to concealment. [Remember: large creatures are not a 10' cube in shape- they just occupy one] He didn't know where Durzulgor was. He just kept moving as wrote in his tactics (move along the pathway), and found himself blocked against something solid (assuming Durzulgor couldn't just let him pass. I always thought that when it's not your round you cannot move in any way). And I rolled for concealment due to invisibility, it's just that Rolf got lucky there. If someone can direct me to a rule which will allow Durzulgor to just let Rolf pass I will make the necessary changes. Also note A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You then act normally after the spell is completed. A spell that takes 1 minute to cast comes into effect just before your turn 1 minute later (and for each of those 10 rounds, you are casting a spell as a full-round action). These actions must be consecutive and uninterrupted, or the spell automatically fails. When you begin a spell that takes 1 round or longer to cast, you must continue the invocations, gestures, and concentration from one round to just before your turn in the next round (at least). If you lose concentration after starting the spell and before it is complete, you lose the spell. You only provoke attacks of opportunity when you begin casting a spell, even though you might continue casting for at least one full round. While casting a spell, you don’t threaten any squares around you. This action is otherwise identical to the cast a spell action described under Standard Actions. which means he is somewhat more concentrated on casting than usual, when casting takes a full round action. Also moving may interfere with the spell being cast. |
| Durzulgor01-11-08, 04:56 PM | Well, that not depends upon me, but upon Durzulgor. If he feels he can wait I have no problems waiting too. 1st: It's your call not mine, but I'm perfectly ok with having my fight a little late as long as it's held, but... 2nd: I DO have a problem with being auto-hit by someone who shoots at me while invisible! 1st) he doesn't know where exactly I am! I 5' stepped back and he has last seen me medium-sized, so he wouldn't know wich square I'm in, without a very, very successfull listen check 2nd) he has no spellraft => no idea I'm large now! 3rd) even IF he knew I wasn't just occupying 1 square, he'd still have a 50% miss chance because of not being able to see me! I do understand that you think it's difficult to mis someone who is as big as a horse, but did you ever try to shoot a horse, you thought was a dog, with a blindfold on?? ;-) |
| Hirumajoe01-11-08, 04:57 PM | @telin btw: how did you calculate the net's hitpoints? a steel door has only 90 hps... about the net with chains: probably workable. but a lot more weight. Net hitpoints is being calculated from the Breaking Stuff section of the SRD, here (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/exploration.htm#breakingAndEntering). It lists rope as 2/hp an inch. Since from the net description it lists 5 hit points, Telin infered a 2.5" thick rope. At 30 hit points per inch, that yields 75 hit points. Although, now that I think about it, a 2.5" inch thick rope in the form of net seems a bit... thick. Normal rope (like Hemp, or Silk) seems to default to 1" thick. Interestingly enough, an Adamantine chain net would only have 6 hit points (5 + 5/3 round down). I could imagine a house rule that states no weapon can have more hit points than the equivalent adamantine weapon. Since that has more hit points per inch than anything else (40 hit points vs 30 and 20 hardness vs 10). Assuming you allowed chain nets. Of course, the net description doesn't say what its made out of... |
| CrazyArtificer01-11-08, 05:04 PM | 2nd: I DO have a problem with being auto-hit by someone who shoots at me while invisible! Maybe I expressed myself a bit badly, let's try to make it more clear. 1st) he doesn't know where exactly I am! I 5' stepped back and he has last seen me medium-sized, so he wouldn't know wich square I'm in, without a very, very successfull listen check He doesn't. Rolf shoots to square X, which is the one you were before stepping away. You are in square Y, which is just next square X, in a straight line. My call is simply that the arrow can still hit you while by the RAW it shouldn't, just because it's being directed to the wrong square. I'm simply saying that such a close shot shouldn't be influenced by the fact you are one step behind the square. A usual shot (say from 90 ft), would be, as the arrow would take a parabolic route before reaching the square. A close shot is employing a straight route, so it should still be able to hit you. 2nd) he has no spellraft => no idea I'm large now! Doesn't matter, as he's shooting you in square X. It matters to justify my call, simply because even if his aim is a bit off, he has more chances to hit an horse, rather than a cat :) 3rd) even IF he knew I wasn't just occupying 1 square, he'd still have a 50% miss chance because of not being able to see me! Check the rolls. There's 2 separate concealment rolls. 01-50 hits, one d100 is 7, the other 42. Both hits. |
| McJarvis01-11-08, 05:04 PM | If someone can direct me to a rule which will allow Durzulgor to just let Rolf pass I will make the necessary changes. Also moving may interfere with the spell being cast. 1) I can't point to a ruling- but this is definately how CoCo has been handling it for the 3+ years I've been here. 2) The Rules snip from the combat action "overrun" clearly states that you can freely move through a square of any creature who allows you to. 3) The invisibility rules would be worthless otherwise. Why spend a full round to see if 2 squares have an invisible creature in them when you could spend a full round to double move & see if 12 squares have creatures in them? Don't mistake any natural "hedging" I insert into my language normally- I am 100% certain that you are not stopped by invisible opponents unless they want to stop you. edit- I'll quote overrun again just for posterities sake. It's talking about someone who is being overrun(and the fact that they can merely "get out of the way" of the overrun) You can always move through a square occupied by someone who lets you by. double edit- Sorry for thinking you didn't apply to 50% miss chance: I didn't check the roller to see if you did. |
| TelinArtho01-11-08, 05:07 PM | I totally agree - And frankly iam not sure how to handle the situation - If it's just an Autohit on the nets - i suppose i can live with it - since you should get rid of it on 1 or 2 rounds of full attacks but using Sunder on it? NO WAY i can swallow that - A situation like this in my opinions can be considered tactics breakdown. For the record - every time I've seen a net used it was freely attacked as an unattended object. I don't think the sunder rules would apply here even with the trailing rope held - since the key here is that the net cannot be used to attack with until the opponent is set free. For the curious: Table: Substance Hardness and Hit Points Substance Hardness Hit Points Paper or cloth 0 2/inch of thickness Rope 0 2/inch of thickness Glass 1 1/inch of thickness Ice 0 3/inch of thickness Leather or hide 2 5/inch of thickness Wood 5 10/inch of thickness Stone 8 15/inch of thickness Iron or steel 10 30/inch of thickness Mithral 15 30/inch of thickness Adamantine 20 40/inch of thickness A net is made of rope and has 5 hit points - therefore, it is structurally sound enough to be the equivalent of 2.5 inches thick of rope. Deepcrystal gives 30hp per inch - so a deepcrystal rope has 75hp. I asked about this before I posted the new version of Aquin (see Tavern X post 2094+ mid-September) to confirm this: [Post 2094] Author : TelinArtho Date : 09-17-07 05:30 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) Anyone have any reservations against Deepcrystal Nets? Deep crystal says that anything can be made out of deep crystal (hence the presence of Deep crystal bows and such). Normal stats for a net is hardness 0, 5hp. Rope has 2hp/inch - so a net has the equivalence of 2.5 inches of thickness. With deepcrystal, the hardness would increase up to 10 and the hp would jump up to 75... So... anyone have a problem with it? (just looking at options and would rather work out the kinks before exposing the character...) [Post 2099] Author : hogarth Date : 09-17-07 05:49 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) The mathematics of object hp seem a bit weird. For instance, a light hafted weapon has 2 hp. Wood has 10 hp/inch. So a handaxe's haft is 0.2 inches thick? I don't like it personally, but there are some people who don't mind this kind of reverse-engineering reasoning. [Post 2100] Author : TelinArtho Date : 09-17-07 05:52 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) Well - I wasn't really looking for something with that much - really I just wanted a net that was VERY difficult to cut through. I actually wanted something with more than 20 hardness - but this was the cheapest alternative I could come up with. I don't necessarily think it is right - but more on the matter of deepcrystal being allowed on "anything." That I think is where the problem really is coming from... [Post 2101] Author : Sjiggie Date : 09-17-07 05:54 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) I don't think that a deepcrystal net would work because the crystal is not as flexibel as a rope one so cannot effectivly entangle a creature. [Post 2102] Author : hogarth Date : 09-17-07 05:56 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) Let's not bring logic into it. :) The rules say "Any item could potentially be made out of deep crystal" even though that doesn't really make much sense. [Post 2103] Author : TelinArtho Date : 09-17-07 05:57 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) Whether it is logical or realistic is not the issue. The rules explicitly state that all materials can be replaced with Deep Crystal and have the same properties as the regular item. Like I said - I'm mostly looking for a relatively cheap, but effective net. I don't particularly like using the psionic cheese that is out there - but without giving it a +2 enh bonus, I don't see much other option... If it comes out that we should nerf deep crystal - I would be fine with that too... since it makes bows have crazy hp as well... [Post 2104] Author : Sjiggie Date : 09-17-07 06:00 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) Yes you're right logic and DnD don't work together ;) Interesting is that mundane crystal says it replaces any metal part in a weapon or armor and while deep crystal states that any item can be made from deep crystal :thinks: [Post 2105] Author : TelinArtho Date : 09-17-07 06:01 PM Thread Title : Re: Core Coliseum Tavern (X) As for hogarth's original reservation - it is odd... A light, metal-hafted weapon has 10hp (1/3rd of an inch), but a light hafted weapon only has 2hp (1/5th of an inch). A one-handed, metal hafted weapon has 20hp (2/3rds of an inch), but a one-handed, hafted weapon has 5hp (1/2 of an inch). Because mundane crystal armor is considered to be made out of metal, druids cannot wear it. Mundane crystal properly forged has 25 hit points per inch of thickness and a hardness of 8. | whitebaron01-11-08, 05:11 PM | Moving through a Square Friend: You can move through a square occupied by a friendly character, unless you are charging. When you move through a square occupied by a friendly character, that character doesn’t provide you with cover. since durz will decide to let him through, there is no bumping into him. the only thing to know where to shoot at is make the DC0 (casting) +20 (pinpoint) listen check. there is no such thing as auto-hitting another square. while it sounds stupid, look at it like this: no character EVER has a waist-diameter of 5 ft. even though we know this to be true, he occupies such a square - why - anyone practicing martial arts could tell you why - no space, no ability to fight. with a gelatinous cube, you might be right. but with a humanoid? barely so. @telin: i always did, and always will, argue against flexible items made out of crystal. it just doesn't make sense. just because the rules editors made a bad call, doesn't mean we have to live with it. about nets: nets are usually made out of hempen rope, and used for fishing. that much should be obvious. ;) |

| CrazyArtificer01-11-08, 05:14 PM | I'm coming to the conclusion that Durzulgor could just let Rolf pass along.. However, would that affect the casting of the spell? see the quote of the SRD above. Also keep in mind he's just activating a wand, not really casting the spell himself. |
| McJarvis01-11-08, 05:17 PM | I'm coming to the conclusion that Durzulgor could just let Rolf pass along.. However, would that affect the casting of the spell? see the quote of the SRD above. Also keep in mind he's just activating a wand, not really casting the spell himself. Put it this way: A gith mage decides he wants to cast a spell that takes 10 minutes to cast. Around him are 20 level 1 archers who have a measily attack value of -1. The gith has a very high dex. All the archers attack him the entire time[always miraculously not rolling 20's]- Does the Gith's spell get interrupted because he's dodging arrows 20x per turn? No. In the same way "letting someone through your square" is an action that requires no concentration and only requires that you are able to move. |

| MindWandererB01-11-08, 09:33 PM | Tactics sent for T.E.D.S. + Gakhnalak Strongjaw & co. And both templer and I have made small addendums to those tactics. Re: Deepcrystal net: I agree it's uber-cheesy. As a general rule, I don't like things that have nothing to do with a character build, but have to do with thinking outside the box. While creativity is all very well and good, the fact that just about anyone could gain a tremendous combat advantage with this thing sends up a warning flag for me. It's like putting a lanyard on an item so that if you drop it, it stays with you, or bringing a cardboard box to hide in so you can't be targeted. Despite the fact that there's nothing technically wrong with these things, they're super-cheesy, can be done by anyone, and change a fight dramatically. You know.... In TT games, I always play with certain "good faith" assumptions. When I DM, I don't sunder their holy symbols, or use monsters that are obviously broken for their CR, or play cheesy games with readied actions, etc. What if we actually came up with a bunch of rules like that? Our current method is sort of authoritarian, banning everything that has abusive uses. What if, instead of phrasing it like a ban, we say something like, "the following rules have been abused in the past, and were deemed broken as written. If you use any of the following, you must take care to do so in a 'good faith' manner, i.e. you must use them in a way they seem to be intended, and/or in a way that does not take advantage of the rule in an unusual way." The rules could then go on to list the specific things that have been abused, and exactly how they were abused in the past. This is a sort of paradigm shift, but it would allow us to use a bunch of things that are currently banned (like 5-foot steps with readied actions) as long as it was done in a reasonable manner. It would also change the atmosphere a little, making the CoCo a little less like cutthroat competition and a little more like a series of friendly challenges. This would be really helpful when 4e comes out, and we don't yet have any errata or FAQ. |
| TelinArtho01-11-08, 09:54 PM | I have Owen vs Lord Lorian done. Unfortunately, no matter what I do with my personal settings, I can't get it to reply in the battles thread and now I have a poker tournament to get to. If I get the chance - I'll try posting it later. If someone where to post so that it gets to the new page - I can probably finish it later. Otherwise, it might have to wait until Monday. -------------------------------- With regard to the net, I want people to understand that using a net was very central to making Aquin viable. I used a deepcrystal net because I saw how effective it was at deterring bow sunders and figured it would work well. I don't like to use stuff from the psionic section of the SRD - Deep Crystal included. If I had a reasonable-cost effective way to make a more durable net - I would have done so. I certainly didn't need 75hp - I would have been happy with a hardness 20, 5hp net. Regardless, the hp increase doesn't change the Escape Artist and Strength checks to burst the net - so it is no tougher a net than that. However, if the feeling is to get rid of the deepcrystal option for nets - we must similarly get rid of other deepcrystal options. Its hp benefits are huge when used on non-metal items - bows, crossbows, slings, etc, etc. Let's not forget that the huge benefit on it is that huge +2d6 dmg boost it gives to psionic characters as well. The deepcrystal net is no more "cheesy" than a deepcrystal bow (from hardness 5, 5hp up to hardness 10, 15hp) as the net can't use the "cheesy" +2d6 dmg boost with a small PP expenditure while the bow can. EDIT: On further comment - the net only bestows the entangled condition. This doesn't prevent spellcasting effectively (especially at higher levels), doesn't prevent attacking - nor even attacking at range. In order to restrict the opponent - the strength check must be made - and that is not a size-based argument - so even a small gladiator has a decent chance against Aquin (+9 vs a +0 str is still pretty reasonable). In a lot of ways - the tanglefoot bag is much nastier (and for only 50gp) and certainly the web spell, entangle spell, etc. |

One major Problem - i think fight affecting. Lorian makes the save vs the stinking cloud in Round 1, Round 2 - he manifests FOM (standart), Quickdismounts (free) and then? Does nothing with his move? why On earth didnt he get the hell away from that Cloud? p.s - if it matters - distinigrate should get extra dmg from GPS. |
| TelinArtho01-11-08, 10:31 PM | Because he didn't quick dismount yet - he was still in the grapple. Freedom of Movement doesn't negate the grappled status but does allow Lord Lorian to auto-succeed when he attempts to escape or when something tries to grapple him. Since he manifests FoM as a standard action - he can't actually take a standard action to break the grapple until the following round. Completely missed the GPS on the initial disintegrate. If I make edits I will add that in. |

Also feint against a giant should it get the "nonhumanoid you take a -4 penalty". Thanks for your run. There are a few mistakes I can see, however: 1) First, I can't make the readied action (throw the bag) and the attack in the same round. That would be like doing 2 standard actions in the same round (plus a move action to draw the shield). 2) Once a readied action is triggered, initiative order is changed. In all subsequent rounds I should have acted first, Jog second. 3) Jog could have made two grapple attemps/round (flurrying). Also, I believe he should have taken a -2 penalty due to the bag but I'm not sure about this This means I wouldn't have been able to hit for 7 damage in round 3, but I could have feinted and attacked in round 4 before Jog could attempt to grapple me. I don't think it would have made much of a difference, so rerun it only if you want and you have time for doing that. On spikes, from Eland equipment: MW Metal light spiked shield (MW spikes) MW-->Masterwork ;) |
| lonewolf01-12-08, 01:37 PM | @templer: just curious: What was the monster you rerolled in the WW fight this week? |
| Stormwind01-12-08, 02:26 PM | @All: I have noticed that a number of pitlords mark monster rolls as private, but they never reset the roll to public. This seems to negate the purpose of having the roll in the first place. I would like to suggest that once the fight is posted that the pitlord should change the rolls from private to public. (Note: this is not directed at anyone in particular, but all of the monster fights that I have looked at so far still have the monster roll marked as private). @templer10: I have to admit, I'm curious as what the original monster was that you rerolled for Varjo last week here (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=2198). (One of my faults is that I am endlessly curious :D) |
| Durzulgor01-12-08, 02:57 PM | Varuxor (CrazyArtificer) vs. Ivellios Marrow (Sjiggie) (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14809567&postcount=1644) or: Oh noes! The ground is attacking me! |
| dulsi01-12-08, 03:17 PM | 1) First, I can't make the readied action (throw the bag) and the attack in the same round. That would be like doing 2 standard actions in the same round (plus a move action to draw the shield). 2) Once a readied action is triggered, initiative order is changed. In all subsequent rounds I should have acted first, Jog second. Oops. I'll correct that later. (How are such corrections handled do you rerun from the broken point? Use existing d20 rolls for different actions?) 3) Jog could have made two grapple attemps/round (flurrying). Also, I believe he should have taken a -2 penalty due to the bag but I'm not sure about this Does the CoCo allow people to use flury of blows to grapple? I wouldn't think you can do that. |
| lonewolf01-12-08, 03:23 PM | Does the CoCo allow people to use flury of blows to grapple? I wouldn't think you can do that. yes it is allowed. |

One problem Ivellios psicrystal never had it self propulsion on and thus was in his pocket and can't be targeted by an Energy Missile because there is no LoS between Varuxor and Kyanite. So Kyanite should have more hp at the moment it was destroyed and the fight would carry on longer. Also in the rewards section the Share pain is missing it has just under 3 hours left and Kyanite might live through the fight. -Sjiggie |
| Durzulgor01-12-08, 05:11 PM | actually, since you never wrote your psicrystal was hidden anywhere and you gained its bonus on spot and listen I could only assume it to be visible. It doesn't need self-propulsion for that. |
| Sjiggie01-12-08, 05:34 PM | A psicrystal doesn't need to be out in the open to give it's bonus to spot and listen just its present sharpens the master senses if it is in arms reach. It can be in the same square and can be in the pocket of his master. -Sjiggie |
| TelinArtho01-12-08, 07:13 PM | @Telin: Minor Rewards error, you forgot Owen's Pol. Career of +38% I specifically looked for this on your sheet and I didn't see it mentioned at the beginning (maybe I'm blind though... has happened before). I know you qualify for it - but it is required to be at the top of your sheet. Will edit after my kids are chained to their beds for the night :P |
| TelinArtho01-12-08, 07:34 PM | Oops. I'll correct that later. (How are such corrections handled do you rerun from the broken point? Use existing d20 rolls for different actions?) Does the CoCo allow people to use flury of blows to grapple? I wouldn't think you can do that. On the first, try to keep thematic rolls in the order they came up. So if you have 20 attack rolls and need to add a saving throw which ends up delaying that person's attack rolls by 2 rounds - don't roll new attack rolls - use the ones you already had just from the point they were interrupted. Yes - flurry of blows is usable in a grapple and is sometimes quite effective. |

| CrazyArtificer01-13-08, 06:14 AM | @Sjiggie: I think you should have made it more clear. I certainly hadn't the impression the psicrystal was going to be stored anywhere, as you have no container beside the outfit pockets and we don't even know if they are large enough to store a psicrystal (is it of the size of an open human hand? Is it a sphere, a cube, what?) . |
| whitebaron01-13-08, 06:43 AM | about containers: coco assumes that you have every container you need for carrying your equipment. |
| templer1001-13-08, 06:57 AM | @t10 - thanks for the run. For all the fuss of the net and Arden is able to destroy it in 2 rounds... Just enough time for you to win - since in those rounds he was in the previos version - regaining focus and smashing you to bits. |
| CrazyArtificer01-13-08, 08:06 AM | about containers: coco assumes that you have every container you need for carrying your equipment. Which isn't necessarily the same thing as having a place to hide it. I can have a container for 100kg of corn, but that doesn't mean I can hide all that corn in the arena without specifying how, I believe. At least point it out somewhere so your opponent can write tactics accordingly. If I thought it was hidden I would have just kept running away+shooting with the crossbow (alternating every round) until vigor came off. |
| whitebaron01-13-08, 08:20 AM | Which isn't necessarily the same thing as having a place to hide it. Indeed, it isn't. still, coco assumes you can put away anything you like - look at t10's psions for instance - they would really look (even more) ridiculous with all their dorjes in the visible. ;) It's your pitlords decision that he has his powerstone not hidden unless he specifically tells so. One thing to consider: Where actually does he have it? :) There's no need to specify anything on your sheet, though. Psions usually start with their psicrystals in their pockets. |

A bandoleer filled with scrolls crosses his torso. :D |

| mucki01-13-08, 09:36 AM | Drawing is easy ... my TT artificer has more problems stowing the wands. I usually end up dropping them, so when I need a few different spells during a fight, I end up with equipment worth a fortune laying around on the floor. Quite inconvenient when you suddenly have to flee during or after combat ;-) PS: tbh, i am still trying to figure out a way to do this (http://nodwick.humor.gamespy.com/gamespyarchive/index.php?date=2006-07-27) :) |

Materials - Add 1 rod of many wands per each hand (complete mage i think), double wand wielder, 2 weapon fighting, the Item in MIC (name escapes me) that gives an extra hand - gives you Base usage of 9 wands, Add extra hands and muti weapon fighting for extra Cheese (i think that's possible anyway - iam away from books). p.s - you better be fighting something stinking rich - since the cost in charges is ridiculesly high. |
| Zevox01-13-08, 11:15 AM | Arden vs Aquin is Done (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14803316&postcount=1634). Just ran across an issue with this fight that just might change the outcome. In round 10, when Arden first dives/attacks Aquin, I had asked for him to activate his Chain of Personal Superiority, and it appears you didn't have him do this. It gives him +2 str and (more importantly in this case) +2 con, which means +9 hp. If my math is right, that means he has 3 hp left after that last series of attacks, which gives him the chance to step back, refocus out of AoO range, and cut Aquin down. Zevox |

Zevox Dont know how i missed that... And i looked for it 2. well ill roll quick to see if next round of attacks for aquin Hits - since in prevois rolls you managed to refocus on the second move action, if he doesnt hit things are going to change. if he hits Ill leave them as is - kind of lazy at the moment (if you dont mind). EDIT - unfrigging beleavable - 8 attacks - not one rolls higher then 24 (in total) - that's going to change matters i think - Ill check more throughly when i get home. |
| templer1001-13-08, 01:23 PM | Arden vs Aquin or Otherwise know - as the Battle that wont End is (i really really hope so this time) done? (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14803316&postcount=1634) All hail the dice Gods - for they are fickle. |
| Zevox01-13-08, 01:27 PM | Enoch the Prophet vs an Efreeti is up. Quick, brutal, lopsided match. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14803316&postcount=1634) All hail the dice Gods - for they are fickle. | Salrantol01-13-08, 01:34 PM | Enoch the Prophet vs an Efreeti is up. Quick, brutal, lopsided match.I think that had more to do with the fact that I didn't think efreeti had legs than anything else--the 2E version clearly didn't in the Unlimited Adventures game I played lots of, and the 3.5MM picture shows the lower half shrouded in flames and smoke as the 2E one was. Which left it not on my list of seven or eight monsters I might be fighting.... |

Which left it not on my list of seven or eight monsters I might be fighting.... Huh, odd. I've always pictured genies as having legs, just sometime having them shrouded in smoke when they fly, and the 3.5 MM image does look like that to me (theres even a knee visible in there (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM35_gallery/MM35_PG115.jpg)). Sorry about that. Zevox |
| whitebaron01-13-08, 01:45 PM | Genies are humanlike beings who dwell on the elemental planes. They are famous for their strength, guile, and skill with illusion magic. i'd deduct that as having arms and legs. side-joke: barbara eden definitely had legs. ;) |

Sorry about that. No, looking at the picture I can see it, but I remembered the picture and all the flamey smoke like I remembered from the 2E efreeti, and concluded "not a biped". I should have looked at it sooner. |
| Salrantol01-13-08, 02:05 PM | Also note: not blaming you, it was my own mistake--but if I'd known what I was facing, it'd've been a different fight (resist fire 20 for starters). That was my first monster fight with a character that didn't at least have enough knowledges to narrow it down effectively. I now see why people gripe about them so much. It's a very different world from reading your opponent's character sheet. |

And yeah, this is definitely one of the reasons many of us dislike monster fights. Zevox |
| dulsi01-13-08, 02:56 PM | Eland vs Jog Stonebreaker I've corrected the fight. I rolled up Eland's feint and damage for Round 4 then noticed that was the round Eland drew the axe. You can't do a move equivalent and draw a weapon as a free action can you? In the end it wouldn't have matter. Jog would have been at 6hp instead of 9. I also agree if flurry of blows can be used in a grapple, the grapple must have the -2 for entangled. Additionally his grapple bonus is 13 not the 15 I used. None of this matters to the rolls. He still wins every roll. As for using flurry of blows, it wasn't in the tatics so I'm going to assume he didn't want to use it. (He also has in his tatics "+13 vs +5 modifier" which seems to support this.) |
| whitebaron01-13-08, 03:18 PM | one of the first things i learnt from playing gwerdan was to add a "always use flurry" block to my tactics. about entangled in the grapple: as both would be entangled in a grapple, don't bother with subtracting the -2 from the roll. Also, the entangled definition only states that it gives -2 to attack rolls - not to all attack actions. about flurry: basically, flurry is the same as another bab-action. so 6/1 bab from fighter and and 3/3 from monk are equivalents. you can do any action you want within a full attack, even touch-> grapple, pin if you want. it can get even worse - touch, trip, followup touch, grapple, secondary pin. ;) |
| TelinArtho01-13-08, 07:44 PM | Can't argue with that last round of rolls. Nice win Zevox. And thanks for the run T10. |
| TelinArtho01-13-08, 08:01 PM | @Zevox, wb - bit of an issue with Asran's tactics: Once Kraegin himself is sighted, Asran will use that tattoo if he hasn’t yet, and Senorda will do a quick spellcraft ID of any spells he has on him (+19 vs DC 20+ spell level, should be easy). Identify a spell that’s already in place and in effect. You must be able to see or detect the effects of the spell. No action required. No retry. Note the "must be able to see or detect the effects of the spell." Since none of the spells Kraegin is buffing with have visible effects and you are asking for this on sight (not after using a spell on him) - the spellcraft would not be able to detect anything. |

(local-file) expect this fight in about 13-15 hours. would be nice to get comments then, so i might fix things before tuesday evening. yesterday went very slowly, with reading that many lines of tactics etc - but should be faster once you're engaged (currently - round 5, next round will be first hit - maybe) |

| hogarth01-14-08, 09:15 AM | If you want to see a really Unlucky pitlord - Mcjarvis got an interleage with main char + 2 allies VS char + Cohort + team + Horses - that Truly suck. Personally, I don't mind a quick fight with a large number of participants as much as a slow fight (e.g. 10 gladiator A snipes and misses 20 gladiator B blunders around for 9 rounds looking for A 30 GOTO 10). |
| whitebaron01-14-08, 09:58 AM | @t10: didn't argue that. was glad to see i took the straw to another fight when you were relocated to interleague :) still, there are some things that should be accounted for with crediting - whatever happened to redesigning them? - ah yes, as i initially always expected - discussion died down due to newer topics in the council. |
| CrazyArtificer01-14-08, 11:05 AM | Eland vs Jog Stonebreaker I've corrected the fight. I rolled up Eland's feint and damage for Round 4 then noticed that was the round Eland drew the axe. You can't do a move equivalent and draw a weapon as a free action can you? In the end it wouldn't have matter. Jog would have been at 6hp instead of 9. Actually, I could have drew the axe on round 3, so I could have feinted and attacked in round 3 :) With an ipotetic success, and a good sneak attack dice I could have disabled Jog, which would have then gone dying if he attacked me. Anyway, chances are fairly small, so don't bother to rerun it. Too many 1 in Eland rolls, this fight :) EDIT: bolded part above is incorrect. I misread his hp as 13, but they are 16. |
| Sjiggie01-14-08, 11:34 AM | @Durzulgor: Are you going to edit the fight or not both me and CrazyArticifier came to the conclusion that my psicrystal was hidden so couldn't be targetted by the energy missiles. | CrazyArtificer01-14-08, 11:39 AM | @Durzulgor: Are you going to edit the fight or not both me and CrazyArticifier came to the conclusion that my psicrystal was hidden so couldn't be targetted by the energy missiles. Thanks Sjiggie Actually I just recognized that most of the times it his hidden from other people posts. From comments I read I can see people agreeing that the pitlord can make his own decision if it's not specified, even if it is against common behaviours :) It's your pitlords decision that he has his powerstone not hidden unless he specifically tells so. One thing to consider: Where actually does he have it? :) There's no need to specify anything on your sheet, though. Psions usually start with their psicrystals in their pockets. Should we rerun it, I'd like a complete rerun with different tactics from round 1, as I wouldn't have bothered hitting you with EM for at least 3 minutes |
| dulsi01-14-08, 11:42 AM | Actually, I could have drew the axe on round 3, so I could have feinted and attacked in round 3 :) Really? You did a move equivalent (drawing shield) in round 2 and readied a standard action. In round 3 the readied action goes off. From my reading of the rules you wouldn't get a move action. Am I wrong? |
| CrazyArtificer01-14-08, 11:45 AM | Really? You did a move equivalent (drawing shield) in round 2 and readied a standard action. In round 3 the readied action goes off. From my reading of the rules you wouldn't get a move action. Am I wrong? You can ready a standard action, but in any round you can make either a full round action or a standard action+ a move action, so I believe it should be allowed, as Eland made a standard action and still has a move action left. Can someone confirm this? |
| Sjiggie01-14-08, 12:05 PM | Actually I just recognized that most of the times it his hidden from other people posts. | whitebaron01-14-08, 01:04 PM | @ca: you get your move action if you take it before the readied action. if not, out of luck: you don't get your move action after the readied action triggered. so basically, if you are not moving or doing something move-equivalent before readying, you give up something... |
| TelinArtho01-14-08, 01:18 PM | @Sjiggie - regarding the Darrgon vs Marius fight: Darrgon has augmented summoning. As such - his summons get a +4 Con bonus - which boosts the Distraction DC of the swarm up to DC13. Hope that doesn't screw things up too much for you. |
| Sjiggie01-14-08, 01:54 PM | I'll look into it probably have to redo the last 2 rounds but nothing to serious. Next time put something in yout tactics like: Remember Darrgon has Augment summoning okay ;) |
| CrazyArtificer01-14-08, 02:03 PM | @ca: you get your move action if you take it before the readied action. if not, out of luck: you don't get your move action after the readied action triggered. so basically, if you are not moving or doing something move-equivalent before readying, you give up something... Taking note for future fights ;) |
| Zevox01-14-08, 02:52 PM | @Zevox, wb - bit of an issue with Asran's tactics: Note the "must be able to see or detect the effects of the spell." Since none of the spells Kraegin is buffing with have visible effects and you are asking for this on sight (not after using a spell on him) - the spellcraft would not be able to detect anything. Considering Kraegin isn't casting any of the spells I wanted to dispel, it doesn't matter ultimately anyway. I'll keep it in mind for the future though. Aside - I am surprised though that you went for Delay Poison. Asran's poison SLA is a pretty obscure ability, and one hes never had a chance to use before, so I figured you wouldn't see it coming. | whitebaron01-14-08, 03:26 PM | on the side of fair game i had you dispel - since you could not know what he had as buff. it only hit magic vestment, though. |
| whitebaron01-14-08, 04:51 PM | Feel the power of Protection from Evil! or otherwise known as Asran vs. Kraegin, is up. |
| TelinArtho01-14-08, 05:30 PM | Wow - very bad luck for Kraegin there, though I'm not sure it really would've mattered anyway. Just as a note - the SR check vs the mantis actually worked - so the mantis wouldn't have been able to attack - which further puts things in the crapper for me... @Zevox - the reason for delay poison is the duration. This is Kraegin's week 1 fight - so I can use that and essentially get it for both of his remaining fights (barring a total of 11 hours on the next two fights). Same goes for Magic Vestment - though since that was dispelled - that's a little annoying. @Sjiggie - small issue on the concentration of the swarm: The goal here is to get close enough to Marius to cast Grease under the feet of his mount. If able to cast grease in this fashion, extend it with my rod. If that works, follow it up with Summon Swarm and break concentration after three rounds to cast SMI for a Medium Centipede. Repeat with another SMI. Break concentration early if Marius and/or his mount is able to move out of the greased area. So while I did specify to concentrate for 3 rounds - I also specified to break concentration as soon as Marius and/or mount is able to leave the greased area. This means that he breaks the concentration in round 7 and starts moving on to the rest of his tactics. All in all, I don't see it having a huge effect unless I get some crazy good rolls with my summons - so I don't see much need to alter the fight. The whole vigor/share pain thing made it so that Darrgon didn't really have a chance. If you do go back to make an edit though - please do take that into account. |
| Sjiggie01-14-08, 05:38 PM | @ Telin - You're right about the summon swarm thing I missed in when I looked at your tactics but see it now. If McJarvis has wants some changes with the fight I will take it into account. -Sjiggie |

If McJarvis has wants some changes with the fight I will take it into account. -Sjiggie I got no problems with the fight. You stopped counting down Marius's pp after the share pain- but that's easily just corrected later in the fight. [13-3(share pain)-4(vigor)-1(offensive precog) = 5pp] Only revise if you really think it's necessary, I guess. I agree with telin that the share pain/vigor is unlikely to crack under the weight of his summons. |
| whitebaron01-14-08, 07:29 PM | rewards for asran/kraegin fight are in. pls double-check, its likely i forgot something. (tired) |
| Zevox01-14-08, 10:43 PM | Feel the power of Protection from Evil! or otherwise known as Asran vs. Kraegin, is up. Well, I can see at least one fairly major error in addition to what Telin said, but as it is now it helps Kraegin and hinders Asran, so I see no need to make any edits. (If you're curious, its his blindness spell. It should have had to pass SR to work, and its a fortitude save, not a will save, so Asran would have made that.) Rewards are in fact slightly off. Asran still gets a boost to his rewards from Kraegin's ally even though he frightened it off, which is 5/9 *25 = 13.88%, so he only takes -11.12% of his rewards off. By my calculations, that means he should get 2,933 xp and 6,666 gp. Kraegin's rewards seem correct though. -Arynat: You can't activate Invis before the fight, it will run out before the fight ever starts. Actually, I can. At-will spell-like abilities are allowed to be prebuffed, because the user can just keep refreshing them infinitely. @Zevox - the reason for delay poison is the duration. Same goes for Magic Vestment - though since that was dispelled - that's a little annoying. Well, I suppose that makes some sense. Still, its not like poison is a common tactic at their level - most poisons are either too low DC or too expensive to be worth using by now, and magical poisons are rare at best - so I'm still rather surprised you're actually using a memorized slot on it rather than, say, keeping 1-2 scrolls of it handy just in case. Sorry about the magic vestment. Wasn't my target. Though to be perfectly honest I don't see it as that much of a boon to you, since Kraegin's AC is still pretty low for his level even with it. Zevox Actually - with my current list of potential opponents (ie - fiarly few) - I planned my spell list according to the monsters at the level. Kraegin lost his previous fight against a devourer which I think he would have had a decent chance against had he had Death Ward memorized. Poison from CR11 creatures is similarly nasty and I had a relative surplus of 2nd level spells to work with, so it was easy to add it in. As for using scrolls - Kraegin hasn't used much for expendables in his previous 8 levels - I don't see much need to add it now :) His AC is certainly an issue I am aware of and up to now - I have essentially used Sanctuary and summons to block opponents from meleeing me. After he gets his planar cohort - I expect he'll have some funds to work out improving the AC a little more - but I'll see how that turns out then. |
| whitebaron01-15-08, 02:37 AM | @zevox: oh yeah, forgot. somehow i counted kraegins ally only for him as penalty. about the blindness: yep, on both. gladly it changes nothing. about the prebuff: lonewolf already told me so via icq. still, i think it's unfair towards other abilities that cannot be prebuffed like that. i.e. could you cast a scroll of mage armor every hour before the fight? would in the long run be cheaper than a high level caster scroll, without changing anything for the fight. |
| McJarvis01-15-08, 09:26 AM | RE: My fight I'm starting it now. I tried to start it last night, but the CoCo roller was not working. [Either the rolls wouldn't appear or just be plain wrong- I can't tell you how many times I asked it nicely to roll a 1d3 roll and it gave me a 1d20+16 roll...even after clearing all the search-histories from my browser..and then some of those rolls dissapeared or something? Ah well- there's two I deleted that stand as evidence of the entire disaster] |
| TelinArtho01-15-08, 10:48 AM | @t10 - sorry but there is one last tidbit to change in the Aquin vs Arden fight in the rewards. Aquin used 1 use of shield from the rod of the hunter (not just "1 use of the rod of the hunter"). Thanks in advance. EDIT - also - he used his breath weapon. |
| TelinArtho01-15-08, 02:08 PM | @Sjiggie - any news on your remaining fight (Ialgo vs Snaga). This is kind of important since Snaga is slated to go on a quest next week with a couple of others. If you don't think you'll have time to finish it - please do post the sheets and tactics to give someone else a chance Thanks /d |

| Stormwind01-16-08, 03:50 AM | Any progress on this so far? It seems to be on the start of round 3, but McJarvis seems to have stopped it there with: ALERT: Hogarth, you need to be more careful with your tactics. A humanoid is not a suitable mount for another humanoid- but I didn't see this until after I posted everything. I'll think on what I'm going to do about this. |
| CrazyArtificer01-16-08, 03:52 AM | @Durzulgor: I'm going to edit Varuxor sheet shortly, given we had no news on a rerun. |
| whitebaron01-16-08, 04:10 AM | @Thaylen: looks in the roller like Lelenias fight is finished, please post it before the deadline, i don't want any "free" full activities at the moment :) |
| CrazyArtificer01-16-08, 06:19 AM | @Durzulgor. Rewards in Varuxor vs Ivellios fight are a bit wrong. I used a charge from the Skate dorje. |
| Durzulgor01-16-08, 10:47 AM | @Durzulgor. Rewards in Varuxor vs Ivellios fight are a bit wrong. I used a charge from the Skate dorje. oops, gonna fix that right now! |
| The Dread Dormammu01-16-08, 02:04 PM | Thanks for Running the Fight for Snaga, I did notice one mistake though, you had Ialgo roll a will save against Touch of Idiocy. Touch of idiocy has no save, that might give Snaga time to Coup de grace. |
| The Dread Dormammu01-16-08, 02:11 PM | Oh also, Aiewae Should attempt Coup de Grace against the paralyzed Ialgo. |
| TelinArtho01-16-08, 02:49 PM | Well - since the first save would've been enough to overthrow the initial hold person - there's nothing to give Snaga the opportunity to CDG with. That said - I don't understand why Ialgo would sit there double-moving after Snaga when he is clearly faster. Ialgo could just as well move and ready and not be sucking up magic missiles while trying to outrun someone twice his speed. Given the late hour of the fight - I can't argue with a holdover - but at the same time that will delay the quest yet another week... |
| whitebaron01-16-08, 03:02 PM | @mwb: i just saw you posting thaylens pitlorded fight. - rewards are off, what to do about that? :) WOOT - thumbs up. you're faster editing it in than me writing this message. @telin, tdd & ca: well, i'll be ready any week you are. i for myself don't care if its this week or the other. but if you don't do it this week, i might pickup another fight if there's the need. just let me know in time. :) |
| CrazyArtificer01-16-08, 03:04 PM | @Thaylen: if you have problems viewing the battles of gladius thread enter your account and set posts per page to 10. It worked for me. @wb: we'd like to start this week.. we've been waiting 2 weeks already :) |
| The Dread Dormammu01-16-08, 07:15 PM | *sigh* Well as I said before I'd rather go questing... |
