| TelinArtho04-11-07, 12:48 PM | Fights of the Week: April 11th Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match. Rules of Gladius All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius. It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2. Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders. Pairings GM-in-Training MindwandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline. Make sure that your character is not in prison. Pitlording You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight. If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help. You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete. If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool (http://wormhole.ath.cx/coco/coco_dist.php) should suffice. Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold. If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact. Recent News and Developments The Iron Man tournament Round 2 is this week - good luck to all involved TelinArtho has taken control as Guildmaster (CEF). The Celestial Forces are looking for some new blood to help spread the word. Comments & Concerns Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread. Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords. Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN! If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius! |
| Zevox04-11-07, 02:38 PM | TelinArtho has taken control as Guildmaster (CEF). The Celestial Forces are looking for some new blood to help spread the word. ...and for anyone interested in spilling some of that CEF blood, old or new, stop by the EHTC. Why be a subordinate to some overstuffed priest and a walking dog when you can work alongside Dragons, Devils, Vampires, Necromancers, and trained killers to your own benefit ;) ? One room is still open and unclaimed! Zevox |
| MindWandererB04-11-07, 02:50 PM | Or, you could always split the balance and join TLT. Dedicated to keeping the peace, we count two entertaining lycanthropes among our number, and despite our reputation, only four druids out of nine members! Also with newly available rooms! |
| Rauul04-11-07, 02:50 PM | ...and for anyone interested in spilling some of that CEF blood, old or new, stop by the EHTC. Why be a subordinate to some overstuffed priest and a walking dog when you can work alongside Dragons, Devils, Vampires, Necromancers, and trained killers to your own benefit ;) ? One room is still open and unclaimed! Zevox Oh... the Corrupter may of found a new home.... :) |
| TelinArtho04-11-07, 02:51 PM | ...and for anyone interested in spilling some of that CEF blood, old or new, stop by the EHTC. Why be a subordinate to some overstuffed priest and a walking dog when you can work alongside Dragons, Devils, Vampires, Necromancers, and trained killers to your own benefit ;) ? One room is still open and unclaimed! Zevox So no grace period for an old paladin to sit and get things organized eh?... And who said that you couldn't be among dragons in the CEF? Just not the despicable backstabbing ones that hold grudges for years upon years... |
| Rauul04-11-07, 02:57 PM | So no grace period for an old paladin to sit and get things organized eh?... And who said that you couldn't be among dragons in the CEF? Just not the despicable backstabbing ones that hold grudges for years upon years... Lord Frost is a backstabber... hmm wonder if he knows this :) |
| Hirumajoe04-11-07, 02:57 PM | @Telin: Well I suppose if CEF is desperate, I could always re-activate Kai Engel. He's neutral good and has previously been in the guild. Being ECL 3 he also doesn't need a miniquest to join. Only reason he left was because I hadn't been activating him since I stopped pitlording. Technically I'm allowed to activate two characters even without pitlording/credits though, its just I haven't wanted to strain resources around here needlessly. He's located here, since he's no longer on the roster. |
| TelinArtho04-11-07, 03:02 PM | At this point, I am not just looking for bodies to fill out the roster. What I am looking for is to grow the roleplaying structure in there so that people actually post there. Most of the guild threads are pushing 800+ posts, but yet CEF is sitting around 250. So if you want to join and have an active part - great - I will happily take you in. |
| Zevox04-11-07, 03:17 PM | So no grace period for an old paladin to sit and get things organized eh?... You mean you haven't been reading the other Guild threads? Huh. Well, if you'd read the EHTC thread every now and then, you'd note I'm not going to be doing anything until at least late in the Iron Man. Don't want folks thinking I'm taking advantage of that to hit Guilds when their members are occupied with a once-in-a-lifetime tournament. Once the final rounds are upon us though... we'll see. And who said that you couldn't be among dragons in the CEF? Just not the despicable backstabbing ones that hold grudges for years upon years... The only Dragon I see in the CEF is a half-blood. Whereas the EHTC has Indivara, a full-blooded Blue Dragon, which is who I was referring to in that ad. Zevox |
| TelinArtho04-11-07, 03:27 PM | Wait - isn't Indivara the one with the grudge that I was referring to? Anyway - I have a couple of dragons in the works... so maybe we'll see a few more in the relatively near future... |
| TheMagister04-11-07, 03:44 PM | Or, you could always split the balance and join TLT. Dedicated to keeping the peace, we count two entertaining lycanthropes among our number, and despite our reputation, only four druids out of nine members! Also with newly available rooms! OR, you could visit the raucous Warfare Alliance guildhall and meet new friends over a mug of Borgo's Ale! Located in the bustling marketplace of Central Gladius, the Alliance guildhall stands watch over the Gladius Arena itself, and is dedicated to the competition and warfare that the Arena represents. Currently four gladiators of the coveted Great Reknown status call the Stronghold home, and our stable of fighters, barbarians, psychic warriors, clerics, and war-sorcerers represent one of the most successful ensembles of might, magic, and stealth currently in place in Gladius. Due to some setbacks early in the Guild Wars game, we currently hold the lowest ranking in Guild power, but our foundation is solid and our cause just. If you believe in personal freedom for the Citizens of Gladius and wish to devote your time, tactical wit, and strong right arm to acquiring that freedom, drop by the Warfare Alliance Guildhall today to meet Gwar, the titanic adamantine golem that holds the consciousness of a revived Gladosian General! Bring your own Borgo's! |
| Macbrea04-11-07, 03:51 PM | "I am not a backstabber! Dirty Teef... I am a warrior of the highest caliber. Yeah, I got a grudge with War. They wouldn't accept a real warrior. Claimed, I had to know how to use weapons or be some kind of crazy monk at the time. Well, I will get them one day. CEF turned me down because they didn't need to help of a real dragon in taking care of the smaller members of WAR. Something about wanted to fight fairly. Imaging that... ", mutters Lord Frost. |
| Pitlords04-11-07, 04:20 PM | Pairings are done. We're a bit stretched this week due to IMT; I apologise to the obvious. |
| templer1004-11-07, 04:20 PM | MWB/pitlords - my char- elrick flamebrother is ECL 5 Not ecl 4-please reassign - and yes i managed to level after just 2 fights. easist way to solve this is move elric against Zax Kar Nissex and swithc me from pitlording that fight to the other ECL 5 fight - and have telinartho take elric VS zax |
| Zevox04-11-07, 04:21 PM | Wait - isn't Indivara the one with the grudge that I was referring to? Yup, I'd figured that. I was just making a separate point - that the CEF does not, in fact, have any real Dragons in their ranks at all ;) . Zevox |
| Zevox04-11-07, 04:24 PM | @ MWB - Little error in the pairings. You have my Annalina Vale incorrectly marked as active - that should be Arden Tarmik. No big problem, just insert him in her place since they're the same level. Zevox |
| TelinArtho04-11-07, 04:26 PM | MWB/pitlords - my char- elrick flamebrother is ECL 5 Not ecl 4-please reassign - and yes i managed to level after just 2 fights. easist way to solve this is move elric against Zax Kar Nissex and swithc me from pitlording that fight to the other ECL 5 fight - and have telinartho take elric VS zax Except Zax is my character - so I'm not allowed to pitlord it either :) |
| Sjiggie04-11-07, 04:29 PM | @ Milov Monster fight setup is up. It is 1 large monster good luck :p |
| templer1004-11-07, 04:29 PM | Except Zax is my character - so I'm not allowed to pitlord it either :) oh lol - BAD MWB- not that i mind getting an ECL 4 fight- free xp and all... |
| Vathelokai04-11-07, 04:32 PM | I can pick up the Zax fight. Normally I don't like to do two, but monster fights run quick. |

| waywreth04-11-07, 04:35 PM | Just found another issue in the ECL4 Team fight - Matthis Dar'ath III (waywreth) & Le Petit Guepe (Horatius) vs. The Artificer of Gladius (McJarvis) & Ilendil Oratith (TelinArtho) Pitlord: sonofzeal [Sewer] [Team] The Artificer of Gladius (McJarvis) is crafting this week, not fighting. I would suggest we just turn it into a 3 person FFA instead. |
| Rauul04-11-07, 04:38 PM | Bad MWB... BAD BAD... Corrupter against a turning undead cleric... orc vs another stinky elf.. and and Shadow vs a Wizard... i have no luck at all in the pairing LOL O-well tactics will be out tonight for all 3.. |
| Pitlords04-11-07, 04:40 PM | Just found another issue in the ECL4 Team fight - Matthis Dar'ath III (waywreth) & Le Petit Guepe (Horatius) vs. Done. |
| waywreth04-11-07, 04:44 PM | Notice how I neglected to mention it could've been a hunter fight? Yeah, that's because I don't like those myself. Thanks for the quick reply MWB. |
| Macbrea04-11-07, 04:47 PM | We have decided to change that fight to the Three of you against an Unknown monster ECL 8. :P |

| NiQil04-11-07, 09:43 PM | Ditto for Zaroff. I think it should be a good fight. I guess that depends on how you classify "good". Personally, I think it's going to be a horrible fight...but that's because I get to fight 2 vs 1... |
| McJarvis04-11-07, 09:48 PM | I guess that depends on how you classify "good". Personally, I think it's going to be a horrible fight...but that's because I get to fight 2 vs 1... I'd say more on it, but I don't want to give you clues for tactics. :) May the best horse man win! |
| Zevox04-12-07, 01:09 AM | @ Telin - Tactics for Mithos Durrol (vs Zodiac) have been PMed. @ ToK - Tactics for that FFA will be tomorrow. MAN, this fight is a melee-lover's dream. That one should make the Newspaper! I'm looking forward to it. Aye. Two warmind-style meleers, a a monk/pyro meleer, and a monk archer/sniper. Jesus Christ, talk about a battle where anything could happen. I'd wish ya'll luck, but I really don't want you to have any :P . Zevox |

(???) vs. ??? (???) : Maraxus [???]Again, my apologies to all involved. |
| Maraxus04-12-07, 01:45 AM | Hm, that offer for two fights - dangerous for me. Now that one of them is an Iron Man fight, that gets really a lot. Could I get an "easy" IMT fight to run there please? Specificly not the forest, that would be. Oh and tactics for Graashnak Vruuurk vs. Lord Lorian forwarded to McJarvis. |
| MindWandererB04-12-07, 01:50 AM | Hm, that offer for two fights - dangerous for me. Now that one of them is an Iron Man fight, that gets really a lot. Could I get an "easy" IMT fight to run there please? Specificly not the forest, that would be. Oh and tactics for Graashnak Vruuurk vs. Lord Lorian forwarded to McJarvis. Sorry--I was just barely able to cover everything. I'll be sure to give you a non-forest IMT fight. |
| hogarth04-12-07, 06:36 AM | Hm, that offer for two fights - dangerous for me. Now that one of them is an Iron Man fight, that gets really a lot. Could I get an "easy" IMT fight to run there please? Specificly not the forest, that would be. Maraxus -- I can take your ECL 3 fight if you like. (There's no way I'm going to do an Iron Man fight, though!) |
| templer1004-12-07, 06:52 AM | sonofzeal - tactics for el rapido in big melee mess in the arena sent. |
| TheMagister04-12-07, 07:06 AM | I think I've finally got a handle on how to deal with that mess. I'll be working on the FFA tactics today. |
| Horatius04-12-07, 08:45 AM | If a player has troo many expendables, I assume he cannot use any, correct? Does the pitlord have any leeway with that? |
| TheMagister04-12-07, 09:02 AM | Nah, that's too harsh (especially if he's only over by a little). I'd let my opponent pick an expendable that I would lose access to, and kick myself for my bad math. Propose that to your pitlord and I'll bet you'll get an agreement. |
| Maraxus04-12-07, 09:57 AM | Maraxus -- I can take your ECL 3 fight if you like. (There's no way I'm going to do an Iron Man fight, though!) No, I can do that. The ECL3 fight should not be too hard (through I don't know, what Tagg plans). And the Iron Man week is 1 day later ... and a 2 week-week anyway. It will all be run, likely before Tuesday :) |
| TaggIIV04-12-07, 10:00 AM | Tactics sent to Maraxus |
| Vathelokai04-12-07, 10:36 AM | If a player has troo many expendables, I assume he cannot use any, correct? Does the pitlord have any leeway with that? As a pitlord, I've had that happen. What I did was remove any expendables that had multiple copies (under the assumption that the player would do that if they had realized). |
| Rauul04-12-07, 10:47 AM | If a player has troo many expendables, I assume he cannot use any, correct? Does the pitlord have any leeway with that? Since it's shadow (i saw not 1 but 2 prison violations on the same thing) toss away the prot vs arrows (didn't realize i had bought that) |
| Rauul04-12-07, 10:53 AM | The MiniQuest: To Death Cometh (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=827195) ECL 8 is up for Zevox Lets hope this Mission is better than her last outing |
| Sjiggie04-12-07, 12:29 PM | Etiquette_Gnome miniquest for Sabra is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=827652) |
| Horatius04-12-07, 12:51 PM | Since it's shadow (i saw not 1 but 2 prison violations on the same thing) toss away the prot vs arrows (didn't realize i had bought that) Yup, that's what I was planning - well, I'll just let you 'drop it off at home' after the fight. You didn't say you were going to use it anyway, so I wasn't too stressed about it. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't commiting a major sin letting it slide. |
| McJarvis04-12-07, 01:00 PM | As a general note-> he can't "Drop it at home", he has to sell it immediately.(for a full refund, though) |
| MitzaVolchenko04-12-07, 01:13 PM | Tactics sent for FFA to ToK, now forwarding them to sonofzeal. Please let me know if you have questions. |
| Zevox04-12-07, 01:28 PM | @ sonofzeal - Tactics for Arden Tarmik (in big ECL 6 FFA) have been PMed. Good luck with that one - I certainly don't envy you having to run it. Zevox |
| MitzaVolchenko04-12-07, 01:31 PM | @ sonofzeal - Tactics for Arden Tarmik (in big ECL 6 FFA) have been PMed. Good luck with that one - I certainly don't envy you having to run it. Zevox You could surrender and make it easier on him :P |
| Zevox04-12-07, 01:34 PM | You could surrender and make it easier on him :P Pah, no way. If El Rapido weren't there, I'd be willing to bet on Arden coming out victorious. As is, I'm still pretty sure he can do better than last place. Zevox |
| One_Marine04-12-07, 01:35 PM | @ Templer10: So I know how much time I have to work with, when do you want tactics by? |
| Milov04-12-07, 01:37 PM | Tactics for Mask and Ihdald are out. *sigh* This does not look like a fun week for them... |
| TheMagister04-12-07, 01:46 PM | @sonofzeal - tactics for Rubicanti sent via PM. I'm hopeful. {crosses fingers} I'm not lying. {hides crossed fingers behind back} TM |
| Erithmu04-12-07, 02:47 PM | @Zevox: If you haven't seen it already Asran's assault is here. |
| hogarth04-12-07, 02:50 PM | Looking at the Jar-red fight that templer10 just posted, I noticed this: jar red attempt to **** to animal form and he fail and single move towards the city still. I think someone forgot to put the "f" in "shift". :D |
| templer1004-12-07, 02:50 PM | valen VS jar red is done and here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=12073229&postcount=765) - i call this - The day The dino stood still. but seriosly- someone go over this long fight with shitload of rolls. |
| templer1004-12-07, 02:53 PM | @ Templer10: So I know how much time I have to work with, when do you want tactics by? On time prefearbly but if u must saturday evening. (i like getting fights done thursday-saturday). |
| MindWandererB04-12-07, 02:54 PM | I think someone forgot to put the "f" in "shift". :Dbut seriosly- someone go over this long fight with ****load of rolls. Then again, maybe not. Watch the Code of Conduct, please! |
| templer1004-12-07, 02:55 PM | Looking at the Jar-red fight that templer10 just posted, I noticed this: I think someone forgot to put the "f" in "shift". :D Lol that was 1 pain in the ass fight until i started speed rolling - doing 6 attacks per round with individual bonuses added in and descriptions was a bit much. |
| Rauul04-12-07, 02:56 PM | Yup, that's what I was planning - well, I'll just let you 'drop it off at home' after the fight. You didn't say you were going to use it anyway, so I wasn't too stressed about it. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't commiting a major sin letting it slide. Acually it was suppost to be an Elixer of hiding but well stupid me wasn't thinking when i did the charater |
| templer1004-12-07, 03:00 PM | in - Zwei und'Vierzig (MitzaVolchenko) vs. Rubicanti (TheMagister) vs. El Rapido (templer10) vs. Arden Tarmik (Zevox) since everyone already sent tactics and everything- Mitza- why on earth do an archer dont have a deep crystal bow? hell it 's not even darkwood- it's just asking to be sundered. (and no backup bow). also- why do i get the feeling all 3 of you went strait for poor el rapido.... |
| Zevox04-12-07, 03:07 PM | in - Zwei und'Vierzig (MitzaVolchenko) vs. I'm not Mitza, but I think I can guess. For starters, Darkwood wouldn't help in that regard. Same hardness, and theres no way the bow is thick enough to have more than 5 hp from it. And Deep Crystal would be kinda expensive for a material that only helps with sundering, since shes not psionic. Especially since its little help against those specialized to sunder, who will definitely have adamantine weapons. Zevox |
| hogarth04-12-07, 03:11 PM | Lol that was 1 pain in the ass fight until i started speed rolling - doing 6 attacks per round with individual bonuses added in and descriptions was a bit much. There's a problem though; as Hirumajoe pointed out in his tactics, Jar-red can't 5' step and full attack when he's entangled (since his movement is impeded, it's like a 10' move). The best he can do is single move and make one attack. |
| templer1004-12-07, 03:12 PM | I'm not Mitza, but I think I can guess. For starters, Darkwood wouldn't help in that regard. Zevox ah- but it will help against those NOT suited for sundering- since at this point after the bow is sundered anything with 25 AC or more can ignore the char. btw- buying 2 or so MW longbows as backup isnt a lot at ECL 6. |
| templer1004-12-07, 03:15 PM | There's a problem though; as Hirumajoe pointed out in his tactics, Jar-red can't 5' step and full attack when he's entangled (since his movement is impeded, it's like a 10' move). Valen won anyway so the discussion is pretty moot (exept maybe arrows fired) but the description of the condition entangled say- "An entangled creature moves at half speed" as far as i understand teh english languge- there is a diffrence between moving at half speed- which effectivly cuts down move by half - to saying every move you make cost twice- it may look teh same but its not since the first option allows for full attack and the second doesnt- unless there is a faq or something iam not aware off saying otherwise ill go by my interpritation. note- that as i got 2 chars that use entangle in all its forms i would love the second option to be true. |
| TheMagister04-12-07, 03:17 PM | Look in your Player's Handbook and find the definition of "5-foot step". Hiruma, Hogarth, and I are right, bro. Sorry about all your wasted time... |
| Zevox04-12-07, 03:18 PM | ah- but it will help against those NOT suited for sundering- since at this point after the bow is sundered anything with 25 AC or more can ignore the char. btw- buying 2 or so MW longbows as backup isnt a lot at ECL 6. Well, Zwei is a sniper, so its likely that her plan for that is simply to never give her foe the chance to sunder the bow. I don't pretend to understand the lack of backups though. Zevox |
| templer1004-12-07, 03:23 PM | Look in your Player's Handbook and find the definition of "5-foot step". Hiruma, Hogarth, and I are right, bro. Sorry about all your wasted time... Humm your taking the definition of "diffucult terrein" that is needed to negate ability to 5-foot step a bit far - i can see it as being that with entangle cast by a druid (since it creates a 400 foot radius (terrein) that entangles stuff) but entagling ectoplasem is localized just on the target. If it was importent i would have wanted a ruling on this as it doesnt make a diffrence in the result iam letting it stand. |
| MindWandererB04-12-07, 03:35 PM | Glossary:You can't take a 5-foot step if your movement is hampered, such as into a square of difficult terrain, in darkness, or when blinded.Does that help? |
| templer1004-12-07, 03:39 PM | Glossary:Does that help? i saw it- and i agree that if you move into a terrin that entangles you - per the entangle spell it's difficult terrain- but what the power entangeling ectoplasem does is not to make the terrain entangle you - it makes the target itself entangled with no relation to the terrein or anything so i dont see that applying, but hell if everyone insist iam wrong good that means entangling ectoplasem is even a better power then before. p.s. iam a lawyer in RL so i look at the exact wording and the cause of the effect before applying the penalty- and the cause of the condition entangled is diffrent between the spell and the power so As i understand it at least- the effect the power create doesnt satisfy the requirment to be considered diffucult terrain. |
| Macbrea04-12-07, 03:50 PM | Let us break this sentence apart. You (meaning the character themselves not the player) can't take a 5-foot step (the type of action requested to be taken) if your movement is hampered (A stated fact of reason that you cannot take the action), such as (added to a sentence to form an example of such situation that it might occur) into a square of difficult terrain (example 1), in darkness (example 2), or when blinded (example 3). That sentence was pretty clearly worded. |

That sentence was pretty clearly worded. Actually- what the SRD say is - "You can only take a 5-foot step if your movement isn’t hampered by difficult terrain or darkness" the operative word is "BY" as in JUST difficult terrein or darkness prevent not anything else that hamper movement. when the POWER- entangling ectoplasem is used and someone is gooed by it- he isnt stepping into or out off or moving in difficult terrein - he is covered by ectoplasem which is what causing him to move at half speed it's not by itseld considered difficult terrein. no difficult terrein=can take 5 foot. btw- also think about the balance issue- unlike the entangle spell or tanglefoot bag - teh 2 most common ways to entangle someone- the power entangling ectoplasem has no save and it's a lot easier to make a ranged touch attack hit then someone not making a level 1 spell save. |

| Vathelokai04-12-07, 10:57 PM | I feel like firing a ranged touch spell from a dorjes provokes an AoO(attacking ranged), but I wasn't sure-> so I didn't run it that way. Power Trigger This is the activation method for dorjes and psicrowns. It requires the special knowledge of power manifestation that a character of the appropriate class would know, and the formation of the appropriate command thought. If a power is on a character’s power list, the character knows how to use a power trigger item that stores that power. The user must still determine what power is stored in the item before she can activate it. Activating a power trigger item is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Seems like it should, since it's kind of a ranged attack, but it's not actually. |

| McJarvis04-13-07, 06:38 AM | Seems like it should, since it's kind of a ranged attack, but it's not actually. I didn't think it provoked an AoO because it's a powertrigger item, though. There are two things-> activating the item, and making the ranged attack. I wasn't sure if "ranged attacks" covered spell-like effects. |

Let me know if I was wrong. Otherwise, lousy luck for graas...he couldn't seem to roll over 10 to save his life. I saw a minor error that does have an outcome on the fight. At the start Graashnak uses 3pp on a vigor but he can only use a 2pp vigor since his manifester level is only 2 from psychic warrior. This saves Lorian a charge from his dorje because the fight ends one round earlier. -Sjiggie |

I wasn't sure if "ranged attacks" covered spell-like effects.McJarvis is correct here. There's two events to consider, only one of them grants an AoO, but there's still an AoO. Activating the Dorje doesn't grant the AoO, but the ranged attack does. If he were activating a Dorje of Force screen, then there wouldn't be an AoO. But the absence of an AoO for activation doesn't protect him against the AoO for making a ranged attack. |

As to the matter of a wand provoking an AoO for a ranged touch attack - I would disagree as well. The ranged touch is part of the spell - not a separate action. If the action to activate the spell doesn't draw an AoO (casting defensively, using a wand or staff, activating a wondrous item for instance), neither does the attack roll. |
| hogarth04-13-07, 12:22 PM | Zodiac (Vathelokai) vs Mithos Durrol (Zevox) If you think you know who won, read it again. One comment on this fight (that doesn't affect the outcome): I believe Zodiac's second hit should do 5 damage, not 2. It's min(1,d12-2) + min(1,d12-2) + min(1,d12-2) and not min(1,3d12-6) (at least that's my interpretation). I'd suggest that Zodiac invest in either a Large dwarven waraxe or a scythe in the future. ;) |

If the action to activate the spell doesn't draw an AoO (casting defensively, using a wand or staff, activating a wondrous item for instance), neither does the attack roll. The only reason I'm thinking otherwise is previous rulings that silenced spell-attacks still make noise. If they make noise like a regular attack(regardless of what the spell-casting action does), then they should provoke AoO's like a regular attack(regardless of what the spell-casting action does). Given that two elders are opposed on the issue-> if a third could step in and let me know before tonight, I'd be much appreciated. Otherwise I'll let it stand with no AoO's. |

| templer1004-13-07, 12:34 PM | just 1 poiunt- seperating the "casting part" of casting a ranged touch spell and the "attack" portion of casting same spell bring rediculos result as in that the caster can potentially get 2 seperate AoA's in theory also it means if it was true that casting on the defensive would nutrilize just the casting part of casting the spell and not the attack portion of casting the spell. |

He has you up against a wall as of getting into melee(you backed up into the cave so he couldn't just charge or move/attack that first round) There is no way to 5' step to avoid the AoO in this case. As a general comment on your tactics(I'll post them tonight): I found them very precise and good, but in all the wrong ways. You reminded me of rules I already knew(though you might have not known that I rarely have to do edits/re-runs on fights), but made certain assumptions that were inaccurate in the Cave(being able to avoid melee, being able to 5' step to get out of an AoO...especially in the cave, which is pretty darn small) I do, though, like your character concept. Couldn't roll above a 10 vs Hold Person to save my life, but at least the other saves were good. Thats the first time I've ever seen someone actually outlast the duration of a Hold Person spell I think. The one thing I did notice is that it looks like you had Noble do a reflex save vs the greased saddle. Shouldn't that have been Mithos doing that? I mean, its him who is trying to stay in a slippery saddle, not Noble. Anyway, otherwise it looks good, except that the prot. evil scroll was CL 2 (you have it as 1 in the wrap-up). Thanks for the quick run! Re: Ranged Touch spells and AoO - I'm with Telin. The ranged touch is a part of the spell, so if the spell doesn't provoke (as when it is fired from a wand, or especially when it is cast defensively [since that skill specifically says you avoid all AoOs by doing so]), theres no AoO for the casting period. Zevox |
| TelinArtho04-13-07, 01:30 PM | Noble gets to do the Reflex save since it is his attended object (and note - he is not trying to "hold on" - but rather Reflex to negate the grease altogether). If it was up to Mithos anyway - it would've been an auto fail since he was held by that point... I'll double check the expendable - but I think I checked it and saw it was listed as CL1. EDIT - yup - its CL1 on your sheet. |

If it was up to Mithos anyway - it would've been an auto fail since he was held by that point... We must be reading that spell differently then, because from what I see, theres no save to negate it altogether, just saves and skill checks to stay standing - or in this case, sitting - while on it. And I don't think being held would make it an auto-failure (would cause him to have -5dex to the save, but not an auto-failure). I'll double check the expendable - but I think I checked it and saw it was listed as CL1. EDIT - yup - its CL1 on your sheet. Huh - I could've sworn that was a CL 2 scroll, but you're right. | MindWandererB04-13-07, 01:50 PM | Shouldn't I get two for the IMT fight? That list is a bit off, now; there were a few changes. Did Cat give 2 credits for IMT fights? I don't remember. If so, I have 8 more credits to shell out. Here's my tie-breaker on the ray/AoO issue. AoOs are determined by action type, not by outcome. While the "Attack (ranged)" action does provoke an AoO, that's not the action being used here; it's the "Activate a magic item other than a potion or oil" action, even if it is producing a ranged attack. So, no AoO in my opinion. |
| McJarvis04-13-07, 01:52 PM | If only we could get rid of that damn listen check house rule, eh? Zevox The only reason I *had* to retire poe was that he couldn't sneak attack with scorching rays silently even if he silenced them via a metamagic rod. I see this as more or less the exact same as this AoO situation: If the process of casting the spell itself produces no sound, there is no reason to believe that the spell should be considered an "attack" for the purposes of creating a listen check DC. |
| TelinArtho04-13-07, 01:53 PM | We must be reading that spell differently then, because from what I see, theres no save to negate it altogether, just saves and skill checks to stay standing - or in this case, sitting - while on it. And I don't think being held would make it an auto-failure (would cause him to have -5dex to the save, but not an auto-failure). Here's the part of the spell that you need to look at: The spell can also be used to create a greasy coating on an item. Material objects not in use are always affected by this spell, while an object wielded or employed by a creature receives a Reflex saving throw to avoid the effect. And yes - it wouldn't have been an auto-failure - but the +0 reflex save versus the DC18 spell would have been nasty none-the-less. Still, I admit I mispoke. |

Btw if i remmber correctly- i didnt assume you can get out of range- i was aware it's a small map- i said it's sometimes possible (i think). About AoA for dorja- First- i really cant see how u consider using the dorja provokes AoA when clearly it say it doesn't- and mincing words that it's a ranged attack is in my opinion - plainly wrong- a very large number of dorjas like a very large number of wands contain attack spells. the description of wands/dorja say clearly and without exeption that they dont provoke AoA - starting breaking down using a wand into 2 diffrent actions- the CASTING part and the ATTACK part is just wrong since a wand/dorja - is a spell/power trigger item- the SRD say about power trigger items - "Activating a power trigger item is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity." also- ill do a comparison to wands- which are equal in all things almost to dorjas and the SRD say this about spell trigger items (wands) - "Spell trigger activation is similar to spell completion, but it’s even simpler. No gestures or spell finishing is needed, just a special knowledge of spellcasting that an appropriate character would know, and a single word that must be spoken" ergo- ther eis NO "CASTING" part to the use of a wand just an "ATTACK" part so when the SRD say using a wand doesnt provoke AOA everything about using the wand doesnt provoke AOA. the SRD even say that when a wand/dorja is typicly used he is - "Additionally, to activate a dorje, a character must hold it in hand and point it in the general direction of the target or area to be affected." it means that to activate the dorja- you point it at a target- in this case an enemy and release the power- and nothing of this cause an AOA. i mean - get real- a wand/dorja can even be used in grapple or swallowed whole without any difficulty. giving an AoA for using a wand/dorja is simply not supported by the rules. If you want to deal with a wand or dorja- SUNDER IT - problem solved - it's not that hard to do. and on another subject- about what you said about not being able to move - so one time i cant 5 foot backwards- do move action to other side- take that 1 AoA and then i got room to move- anyway if i read it right- i had quite a bit of temp HP left + enough pps for doing vigor again + i had 2 more vigor powerstones - so unless he can chop through 100+ more HP.... |
| Vathelokai04-13-07, 04:02 PM | Yeah, and Mithos' low damage rolls on that shocking grasp are the only reason you even got that far :P . 3d6 for a meager 6 damage - the average of 2d6 alone is 7. :pbbbtt: Zevox Well, my familiar was supposed to intercept that, but since it didn't change the fight, no big deal. *EDIT* Atleast Zodiac is getting to surrender now, instead of getting outright slaughtered. |

Pah, how you expected that thing to successfully grapple Regal to begin with is beyond me. The AoO he'd get to stop it aside, you're looking at -15 grapple vs -7, a pretty big difference. Bats just are not built for that kind of combat with anything. Zevox |

| hogarth04-13-07, 04:37 PM | Um, how? Unless Regal chose to expend the grasp in his attack, he can still hold the charge. Under "Holding the Charge": If you touch anything or anyone while holding a charge, even unintentionally, the spell discharges. I don't know if that means that a grapple would discharge it, though. |
| McJarvis04-13-07, 04:42 PM | @Templer-> If you really feel strongly about it, I'd suggest you bring it up in the courtroom. As a Pitlord I try to have my decisions reflect the attitude of most court decisions in the past....really, personally I don't think they provoke an AoO either.(but then again, personally I disagree with a fair number of decisions that the current elders have passed down ;) ) |

| Rauul04-13-07, 04:49 PM | maybe i sould jsut have my charaters buy wands and dajores of all offensive spells so they never have to take an Aoo.. item don't cause the Aoo, but the Spell causes an attack roll therefore drawing the Aoo.. thats how i read it anyways.. |

As such - Sauro is outvoted at this point (subject to NiQil's vote on the matter). Ok.. thats your call... I don't have to like it or agree with it... Just like i don't agree that Dajores should be free of credits and wands cost credits even though there is a chart detailing (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/creatingMagicItems.htm#creatingWands)how to make wands.. Because there is a Chart for one and not one for the other... But i can live with the outcome either way.. |
| waywreth04-13-07, 06:13 PM | I would agree and have run it so in every campaign I've ever been in, and DM'd - Activation of a wand (or dorje) does not cause an AoO. |
| Zevox04-13-07, 06:18 PM | maybe i sould jsut have my charaters buy wands and dajores of all offensive spells so they never have to take an Aoo.. Good luck affording that. But yes, they are very useful in that regard, which is one of many reasons why wands of magic missiles and dorjes of crystal shard are popular items among casters and manifesters. But anyway, even if you're casting it yourself, a simple concentration check to cast defensively prevents any AoOs. The skill is very explicit about that. Edit: Looks like we've got a 2 vs 1 Elder opinion of no AoO for wands/dorjes regardless of the effect they produce. If either NiQil or Tellish agrees with MWB and Telin, thats that. Zevox |
| Macbrea04-13-07, 06:37 PM | So, the question I have is can a person make a ranged touch attack during a grapple? Example: Can a person manifest Energy Ray during a grapple and target someone in the grapple? Note: You're unable to fire a bow at the person grappling you. |

If there are complicated elements that make it confusing at times, then you can think or talk it through and work out what the rules say. But once that's done, then there shouldn't be any question of how to proceed. |

Example: Can a person manifest Energy Ray during a grapple and target someone in the grapple? Note: You're unable to fire a bow at the person grappling you. You can if it's a dorja with no concetration check and cast a spell/manifest a power in a grapple with concetration of DC 20+sl/pl. the fact that it's a ranged touch spell doesnt make a diffrence- you simply "throw" the spell to a range of 0 feet. note- that spells/powers dont generaly have minimum range- just maximum range. |

Presuming its a spell or power, absolutely, if you either succeed at the concentration (and in the case of a spell it has no somatic component) or it comes from an item that only requires a command word/thought activation (e.g. Wand or Dorje). Example: Can a person manifest Energy Ray during a grapple and target someone in the grapple? Note: You're unable to fire a bow at the person grappling you. This question is more interesting, than it looks on the first look. Yes, you can manifest an energy ray in the grapple but the rules are unclear about the questions: - Do you still have to make a (ranged) touch attack against the one wrestling with you? - Do you suffer the "hit random grappler" effect of grapples (Thus can you hit yourself, or do you hit randomly among everybody else in the grapple or does this not effect you at all)? |

Can't say about the first (though I'd assume yes lacking any indication to the contrary), but the second is a definite no. The chart entry with the note about randomly hitting grapplers with ranged attacks specifically says this only applies if the defender is grappling but the attacker is not. Zevox |

First off - since Zwei was successfully hidden from you - the AC would've been 16+4+2 vs the attack roll 24 - so it is a hit. As to spotting - I don't know where he's coming up with a -15 either - but at the same time - if you put it at the -3 that it looks like it should be - you still wouldn't have seen her. However - since it is a readied action - she couldn't snipe anyway (so it would effectively be an auto-spot). |

You currently have Rubicanti in an impossible position - those small gray spaces are rocks, not pillars. He needs to be moving up the black pillars. But easy to fix as I said, just move his positioning to by one of his pillars instead of the rock. Edit: Woops, got thrown off by the colors there. Rubi has blue text, but is red on the map, so I mistook his map position for Arden's. My bad. Zevox |
| templer1004-16-07, 06:09 PM | i need opinions on the following situation- a gladiator wantd to start teh fight with a longbow in hand, he has a buckler in inventory and the bucklers AC bonus is applied to that on his sheet. | TelinArtho04-16-07, 06:12 PM | Buckler: This small metal shield is worn strapped to your forearm. You can use a bow or crossbow without penalty while carrying it. You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whether you are using an off-hand weapon or using your off hand to help wield a two-handed weapon), but you take a –1 penalty on attack rolls while doing so. This penalty stacks with those that may apply for fighting with your off hand and for fighting with two weapons. In any case, if you use a weapon in your off hand, you don’t get the buckler’s AC bonus for the rest of the round. I don't think there's an issue here at all. |

His memory ones, vigor and defensive precognition, should last 60 rounds (4 ML base + 2 ML for surge), and force screen from the dorje should last 20 rounds (dorje is ML 2). Zevox |

Heh...I was pressed for time on tactics, ya know :-) As I PM'd you about-> the horse only dies if it fails it's stabilization checks for -6->-10 hp. If it's merely unconscious it gets healed for my last fight. @NiQil: Sorry I wasn't willing to ditch the horse to fight you evenly, but I felt ditching the buffs was good enough. I hope it was the "good" fight I promised earlier... edit-> H'm...apparently I forgot to include my "use psionic shot on my first shot" tactic. Oops. :( |

Well, in two rounds Arden moves out, and one later Rubicanti has to due to the delay penalty. The carnage should start then. Little thing to note, the round 7 map is a duplicate of the round 5 one, which makes it impossible to tell if Rapid should spot Zwei (I can tell you right now though that if Zwei has no cover, she is auto-spotted - Mitza completely misinterpretted the 1 foot per rank reference; it applies only to moving to cover after distracting a character with a bluff). | sonofzeal04-16-07, 08:11 PM | Zwei is indeed autospotted then (the maps are linked now). She's also getting an arrow from Rubi in round 8, but the roller seems to be acting up. |

Things are about to get messy - looks like Rubi and Rapid will be meleeing while Zwei snipes and Arden pops off his crystal shard then goes with his bow. BTW, I noticed you're rerolling rolls that come up with a blank result. Just so you know, thats not necessary - the roller just does that when the result is 0. Edit: Oh, and the logging out thing is normal too. For some reason it does that automatically after a set period of time. Zevox |

| Zevox04-17-07, 12:04 AM | Crazy. Are those bugs fixable, or do we not have access to the code? In other news, round 11 is up and the Revenge of the Rapido has begun. Well, I'm not sure the log out thing is a bug, but we don't have access to the code, no. Both the roller and mapper were designed by an old member who hasn't been around for quite a while, Usurpator Dracazar. Only thing to note with the fight though is that you forgot to activate Rapido's chain of personal superiority ability (its a free action to activate) - that gives him +2 strength and con, so he does an extra +2 damage to Rubi and has +6 hp more. It lasts 10 rounds. Edit: Oh, bigger issue. Rapido's attack missed - Rubicanti's total defense is a dodge bonus, and he has enough tumble ranks that its +6, which means his touch AC is 23. Even with the chain, Rapido is 1 short of a hit. Zevox |

Not a house rule, no. Its right under the skill's description that tumble improves both fighting defensively and total defense: Special: If you have 5 or more ranks in Tumble, you gain a +3 dodge bonus to AC when fighting defensively instead of the usual +2 dodge bonus to AC. If you have 5 or more ranks in Tumble, you gain a +6 dodge bonus to AC when executing the total defense standard action instead of the usual +4 dodge bonus to AC. Zevox |

Aw dang, if Arden's shard had hit El Rapido would probably be out of this. Oh well. Anyway, just two notes for this point. The first is that you forgot to roll Arden's enervation on the shard (was using 2pp+2surge). The second is just a reminder of his surging euphoria ability (its easy to forget) - he has +1 attack and damage for 2 rounds after using wild surge. Anyway, good night, hope the battle goes faster for you tomorrow. :) Zevox |

I still can't believe he rolled a 2 on that listen check way back when, or that Rubi rolled a 19 to hit on both his flurry attacks. Oh, does that surging euphoria take effect on the same turn as the surge (giving you the +1 on that attack), or on the subsequent two turns? |

I still can't believe he rolled a 2 on that listen check way back when, or that Rubi rolled a 19 to hit on both his flurry attacks. Yeah. That and the way the manuvering and his spot/listen checks have worked out to effectively get him sandwiched between Rubicanti and Arden is kinda a sad situation. I don't doubt his vigor stone and possibly rage will let him last another few rounds, but unless his luck switches around, it looks like he'll actually go down first, even though he deserves better. Oh, does that surging euphoria take effect on the same turn as the surge (giving you the +1 on that attack), or on the subsequent two turns? Good question - the ability doesn't indicate which. I've always seen it run as the subsequent turns, so I'd guess its that (plus then the ability would see little use if you used only +1 from the surge). But +1 won't let the shard hit anyway (a pity, really), so its not much of a big deal. Zevox |

| TelinArtho04-17-07, 03:05 PM | Okay - well I definitely didn't plan on him being an eagle. That said - since they were on the ground when I first found them - my entangle should've been cast. Even if you insist on casting the hold animal first - I still had the time to cast entangle on the following round. In round 5, if Hugs misses his Jump check - there is no way Grimlock nor Elrick could take an AoO since Hugs has reach. That said - if they could take an AoO on him - he definitely could reach them. In round 6 - why can't he move into Elrick's space? Because they would both fall? That is not enough deterrant to stop him. Hugs should maintain the hold and they should both fall. |
| templer1004-17-07, 03:16 PM | Blech, finally rolled up the fight between the menagerie of fighters. Here thanks for the run- From what iam seeing in the roller the AoA in round 6 shouldnt have hit 11 VS ac 14 so no graplle on the AOA. But beyond that- call lightening has 150 range- why cant i move so i cant be near pillers it should be possible and still hit zaq with a lightening bolt. telin- you want your animal companion to basicly jump from 40 feet high? it's an animal dude not a bangee jumper - i dont see ANY animal doing that - especially when not ordered 2. EDIT- about round 5- i think the jump DC should have been higher btw- since in round 4 elrick wildshaped (standart) then had move action to move half move forward (50) and half upwards to around (22- 25 height) so the ape needed to jump 7-8 feet which is dc 30'ish. (avrage move does 60 degree angle upwards). |

Yes I do. And with a +20 to my handle animal check, it would be no problem for Zax to succeed on a push to get Hugs to do it if the pitlord wanted to force that. |
| templer1004-17-07, 03:29 PM | Yes I do. And with a +20 to my handle animal check, it would be no problem for Zax to succeed on a push to get Hugs to do it if the pitlord wanted to force that. iam not saying it's not possible- just that you need to push for it (probably with higer DC since it's kind of suicaidel move).and you need to order it in the tactics- it's a bit beyond pitlord improvisations i think. note- he didnt have my animal companion attack either since that would have helped me win faster maybe. |
| TelinArtho04-17-07, 03:36 PM | A push is a push - sorry no higher DC than 25. That said, I don't think that it is really an improvisation since it leads directly towards the goal I have listed in my tactics - namely to Pin Elrick. Of course, this issue is really up to what happens with the entangle that should've occured in the first place... As to your animal companion attacking - it wouldn't have attacked Zax anyway since Zax wasn't doing anything of the sort. That said - it might have attacked Hugs - since that would be a reasonable "defend" action for it. |
| TelinArtho04-17-07, 03:46 PM | EDIT- about round 5- i think the jump DC should have been higher btw- since in round 4 elrick wildshaped (standart) then had move action to move half move forward (50) and half upwards to around (22- 25 height) so the ape needed to jump 7-8 feet which is dc 30'ish. (avrage move does 60 degree angle upwards). Missed this comment. Actually - since you ascend at half speed - you'd be able to ascend and move forward a total of 40ft - meaning you would only be 15ft up and 25ft out from your initial position. Since my ape is large and has natural reach - you would be in reach in this case. |
| templer1004-17-07, 03:52 PM | why would you cans entangle when the tactics called for casting hold animal on grimlock twice and only entangle if you manage to hold Grimlock. the fact that elrick wasnt at the time ON grimlock makes no diffrence- it's still what you wrote to do- you could have made contingency for that. you didnt. btw- you had no reason to think that elrcik wont be in entnagle range after the hold animals since before Zqs action in round 4 elrick was still human shape and in range and after his action in round 4 elrick was out of entangle range (since it has no reach). |
| MindWandererB04-17-07, 03:54 PM | I hear that Sauro and Lonewolf wanted to make some half dragon treants Wouldn't help... a half-dragon treant is of the dragon type. Yes, I thought of that. |

| TelinArtho04-17-07, 04:08 PM | why would you cans entangle when the tactics called for casting hold animal on grimlock twice and only entangle if you manage to hold Grimlock. the fact that elrick wasnt at the time ON grimlock makes no diffrence- it's still what you wrote to do- you could have made contingency for that. you didnt. btw- you had no reason to think that elrcik wont be in entnagle range after the hold animals since before Zqs action in round 4 elrick was still human shape and in range and after his action in round 4 elrick was out of entangle range (since it has no reach). Actually - when I cast Hold animal and when I should've cast Entangle you were still on Grimlock. From your tactics: start in middle of a squre on grimlock with the shield not held in hand, instead hold scroll of resist energy. R1- cast ressit energy (electricity) from scroll and drop it. R2- call lightening from memory. R3- Produce flame from memory, R4- order Grimlock to heel and defend. (free action- autosucseed). wildshape into an Eagle, go looking for zax. So when you are on the ground, this should certainly have triggered my Entangle tactic. I would accept casting hold animal first (since I expected you to be flying), but even so - that means I am casting entangle in round 4 before you wildshape and move out of the area. eagle can move 80- (sorry though 100 earlier) - and he moves at 60 degree angle upwards- iam not that strong in math but that reads as better then 20 feat (around 22 or something) while also moveing the reqired half move forward (around another 20 or 25) (since an eagle to ascend has to move forward anyway since he cant move strait up). btw- u do know that i can still concatrate on call lightening when in grapple and a much smarter move for me while in grapple would have been to either target zaq if in range target myself with the call lighteing sinec iam mostly immune to the dmg. btw- a grapple most definently falls into the defend from grimlock. Actually, I realize I am wrong. you would be moving at half speed - but I got the directions wrong - you would be 25ft up and 15ft outward from your initial position. At 25ft up, with a 5ft jump - Hugs could have reached you. Since he failed the check though - there certainly shouldn't have been any AoO against him. I know that you can concentrate on the Call Lightning in the grapple, but that would be DC20+SL. Regardless - all of this has to wait until I get a response about the entangle in the first place. |

| templer1004-17-07, 04:22 PM | from what i see in the roller - grimlock failed the initial Will save vs hold animal but in his turn and before zaq could do entangle or anything he made teh second will save on his turn (it;s not listed in the actions but it's on the roller) so zaq should have recalled and recast hold animal on him. |

(http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=12108124&postcount=774) Little issue you have there - according to El Rapido's tactics, when his hp dropped below 20 (round 15) he should've 5' stepped back and drawn and used his vigor stone, which moves his crit and killing blow back 1 round each. Might change some things if Rubicanti continues his lucky rolls or Arden gets a decent roll with his bow next round. Zevox |

Right - but going along with the stance that you have been using all along - I did not ask to recast if Hold Animal works and is broken before my next action... | Zevox04-17-07, 04:35 PM | ...and what would be the roll for El Rapido to jump off that pillar and come down on Arden with his sword? He'd have to do a DC 70 jump check to long jump the 35' horizontal distance without a running start, and he could do a DC 15 jump or tumble check to reduce the falling damage by 10' worth of distance. Which means it would not only be impossible, but suicide. Zevox |
| sonofzeal04-17-07, 04:36 PM | i want rubi's dice- how many 19's he got lol. Ah, but you had that almost-max-damage critical to make up for it. Seriously, 37 damage? Yeeesh. |

Hmm - with longstrider cast and CL1 Jump - he'd be just shy of managing it... 4 barbarian, +7 str, +8 racial, +16 speed (+20 with longstrider up), +10 enh (Jump) = +49 Hmmm... Presuming hes on the ceiling, thats still 40' of distance, so 1d6 nonlethal damage and 3d6 lethal damage. Bad idea. Zevox |

| Etiquette_Gnome04-17-07, 04:44 PM | Back. In regards to the Entangle tactic. I had realized that as a possible issue, so I threw in the saves for an initial Entangle back in Round 0 as a placeholder in case you wanted it. Alright, I screwed up on the first round, thinking that an eagle had a fly speed of 40'. When I have the eagle move, he'll go 40' up and 40' forward. |
| templer1004-17-07, 04:44 PM | Yeah, I remembered the whole "fall damage" thing right after posting. He may still use the "jumping down" action though. Still, thats 1d6 nonlethal damage. If after the vigor he comes out with similar hp to what he had before the correction, that could still knock him out. Zevox |
| TelinArtho04-17-07, 04:47 PM | Back. Well, then it will depend on whether I am permitted to cast it in round 3 - when I have sight to them on the ground (which is what I think it should be) or in round 4. While the has a fly speed of 80, his movement is halved when ascending. With a 60 degree angle he'd end up at 25ft altitude and 15ft out from his original position. |
| Zevox04-17-07, 04:48 PM | El rapido can double move down- even while still moving at half speed he can do 70 feet in that round (althrough a 35 + total defense would be smarter). Go right ahead. With Rubi down, Arden will be switching back to his guisarme in preparation for your inevitable approach. Enjoy the AoO - hopefully you'll be having a nice fall  . Zevox |

| sonofzeal04-17-07, 05:22 PM | So, nothing needs to be corrected right now, no missed modifiers or anything like that? I'll be picking it back up in about half an hour. |
| Zevox04-17-07, 05:24 PM | So, nothing needs to be corrected right now, no missed modifiers or anything like that? I'll be picking it back up in about half an hour. Just the vigor contingency of El Rapido's needing to be swapped into round 15. Nothing else looks wrong to me. Zevox |

Scary but pretty fragile... Zax's tactics up to this point have pretty much been pin and let the vermin kill. Next level, where Hugs picks up a new feat, it opens up so many more options (as well as a new trick to add to the list...). Zax also gets to pick up Craft Magic Arms and Armor at 6th and start beefing up the AC of his allies... Oh and - let's not forget that nice huge Centipede and Large Spider he has waiting in the wings... |
| MindWandererB04-17-07, 05:48 PM | @Malither76: For your fights, you need to include copies of all the character sheets. The originals change, so you need the sheets, as they are, pasted into the fight record. |
| sonofzeal04-17-07, 06:00 PM | and by my tactics i need to do another vigor. Do you want me to rewind to fit the Vigor in earlier, or can I do it this next turn (assuming Arden misses with the bow)? |
| Malither7604-17-07, 06:17 PM | oh yeah that makes sense thanks MWB, sorry for the delay on my second fight guys, I was at the hospital today for about 7 hours, one of my buddies is passing a kidney stone and he called me this morning in pain and needing a ride so I was there most of the day. working on fight now should be up soon. |
| Zevox04-17-07, 06:17 PM | Do you want me to rewind to fit the Vigor in earlier, or can I do it this next turn (assuming Arden misses with the bow)? By his tactics, it should be done earlier (as I said, round 15), and as that affects the fight (Rubicanti gets an extra flurry in at least), it should be run that way. Anyway, presuming no fundamental change, shouldn't Arden switch his bow for his guisarme at that point? His archery tactic was vs Rubicanti, and El Rapido is obviously known to him to favor melee, and his tactic against El Rapido is melee, so it seems logical. Zevox |

And that's why you should never leave things for the last minute. As it turns out, my character Lightwolf is in it, and it's the end of the 3FC for him. Hopefully the fight will be up in time to adjust it before the deadline, but if not, is it possible to just put in a "miscelaneous notes" section what I will buy, depending on the circumstances (win/loss and items used), and then after next week's fight settle things out? |

Unfortunately not. For one, you must not edit the sheet before the fight is done, or you forfeit. For another, your 3FC information, items expended, etc. have to be complete and accurate. For a third, there's no guarantee that the fight will indeed be finished on time, and if the character were paired anyway, that would result in a double-booking. We all have to put up with holdovers from time to time; you'll just have to get used to it. |
| TheMagister04-17-07, 06:41 PM | So, nothing needs to be corrected right now, no missed modifiers or anything like that? I'll be picking it back up in about half an hour. SoZ: I hope you catch this before too long. Rubi needs to be using his Dorje of Hammer on those flurries, as per my tactics. You never know if an extra 3d8 (there were three hits, right?) would change the course of things. Rubi can quickdraw the dorje of hammer. Also: DAMN THOSE CRITS!!!1! WHY?! :weep: Edit: so, yeah, that might change things. Round 13 damage: 1d8+2. Round 14 damage: 1d6+2+1d8, 1d6+2+1d8. Round 15: not sure what order the hits were in, but a possible 1d6+2+1d8. Edit2: What's up with Rubi's AC? The fight says it's only 22 (maybe you're only noting his touch?), but it should be 17+4(IA)+1(TS)+4(FS) = 26. AH! Round 10 should've been a Force Screen round (Rubi can see that El Rapido is coming to melee, and I noted that in my tactics). Won't stop the cursed CRIT, but it'll prevent the killing blow (if it even comes to that after Hammer). TM |

My tactics include a perfectly viable way to engage Rubicanti (readying to fire when he does - hence when both his hands are on his bow and he cannot deflect the shot), and Zwei was not a threat at the time, while Rubi was. Why would he go after Zwei then? Edit: Also, it looks like Rubi has a vigor contingency for being at half hp to take into account. Zevox |

Well, I guess this is why I'm only doing a few rounds at a time, so you guys can catch things I miss. Thanks. I had Arden go after Zwei because your tactics said, in the case of multiple opponents, to have preference for Zwei as opposed to Rubi. That, and I completely forgot about the line about your plan to deal with Rubi. That would have been more visible if placed with the section on Rubi. I'll fix it when my head stops spinning. |

Yeah, FFAs can do that to you sometimes, especially if you haven't done any before. Glad to help. Though it does feel a bit funny - almost makes me feel guilty, like I'm doing some back-seat pitlording or somesuch. The multiple foes tactics is for if my opponents are engaging each other, if you'll note the first line in that mini-paragraph ("This is likely if no one approached me before round 9 – two or all three foes engaged already when I move out."). Rubi and Zwei aren't engaging each other, so it doesn't apply. Zevox |

Dogs do what you train them to do... they don't understand English. You trained your dog to go prone when you say "Down," but that's not what D&D animals do. Heck, you could have trained your dog to beg when you say "Attack." It doesn't know. |

I have one comment and one objection. Comment: It doesn't lookfight affecting, but Zwei should be sniping to avoid delay not constantly which increases her chances of being spotted. Objection: The cold, disciplined, predatory monk does not "freak out." Unless she is trying to perfect a new combat style...hmmm...thinks about bad disco music then rejects the idea. FFA's area PITA. I hate running them. I hate being in them. I hate the unnatural imbalance they cause in fight records (Syb and Zwei both started with FFA's and Hunters before they were outlawed in ECL3). Don't stress the holdover. It just means that I can utterly ignore the board this week unless I am called on to pitlord :) |

Given sonofzeal hasn't done anything with it since yesterday and theres still 3 combatants standing, it doesn't look like it'll be done in time, no. And you still cannot edit your sheet before the fight is finished, no. As for your position in the fight - to be honest, it looks like the dice beat you more than anything else. All those 19s Rubicanti rolled, missing Rubicanti by 1 on your first blow, the horrid spot/listen vs Zwei, and the crit from Arden's bow was a lot of tough luck in quick succession, and all you got to show for it was the one crit on Rubicanti. I don't know if anyone could've taken that kind of luck in any kind of fight and come out a winner. Zevox |

| sonofzeal04-22-07, 04:20 PM | FFA Update: after a brief rewind, Arden's in a bit of pain, Rubi is out for the count, and Zwei is sitting pretty but down to 1 vs 1 with possibly her worst foe. Read all about it (and point out any errors I should fix before continuing) HERE (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=12108124&postcount=774). |
| TheMagister04-22-07, 07:27 PM | Okay, some things that I've spotted: 1) Rubi's buffs are still going and effective. Offensive Precognition (+2 to hit with all attacks) Offensive Prescience (+2 to damage with all attacks) 2) My tactics state to use Force Screen in this situation:Wall Walker Contingencies: General: Same as the Interrupted by ranged! (1)(2) and Interrupted by melee! (1) tactics above. Refresh Offensive Precog. and Offensive Prescience as needed. Switch to sling if needed. Interrupted by ranged! (1) (Spotted!): If deflect arrows negates the attack, ignore the following tactics -- continue up the pillar, but circle around to gain cover from the ranged attacker first. If the ranged attacker continues his/her assault, draw/manifest Force Screen and continue to seek cover from the ranged attacker. 3) My tactics state to renew vigor if brought below 1/2 hpHealing Contingency: if reduced to 1/2 hp, flee and refresh vigor. If Rubi can't get away immediately, take total defense and tumble to set up a withdrawal lane. This tactic is void vs. El Rapido -- draw/manifest defensively instead. Once the first vigor expires, a second should be manifested (the contingency is open-ended), until Rubi is out of Vigor powerstones. 4) Arden's Force Screen expires on his turn on round 21. He manifested it on his turn in round 1, so he gains the benefit until his turn on round 21. Rubi's shot in round 21 hits AC 25, and deals 1d8+2 damage. 5) Arden doesn't have cover from Rubi due to Rubi's height and the angle of his attack (not something that you missed, but I figured it was worth mentioning). 6) Rubi's shot in round 23 hits AC 25, dealing 1d8+2 damage. 7) Rubi should refresh Offensive Prescience in round 26 or as soon as possible afterward (don't wanna fall, of course). The inclusion of the above points changes some things in Rubi's favor: 1) He doesn't get hit by the Arden arrow in round 21 that reduces him to 1 hp, so Zwei's shot as he descends doesn't kill him. It only depletes his Vigor buffer and deals 2 damage to him; 2) His buff cycle as he descends the pillar is one round shorter (no need to remanifest Vigor just yet) so Zwei may be denied a chance to shoot at him or Rubi may have cover by the time she does; 3) Rubi deals more damage to Arden (hits in round 21 and round 23 add 2d8+4 damage, and the crit gains 6 more points of damage). And that's all I've got. I'm tellin' you though, I'm having second thoughts about letting the Hammer melee tactic go by un-included. I'm thinking more and more that Rubi would've (though sheer dice luck) forced El Rapido back into his healing contingencies over and over. 4d8 damage is nothing to dismiss lightly. Really, it wouldn't be hard to edit in. Please look at rounds 13 thru 16 again! In the spirit of fairness, if nothing else... The attack rolls can be kept in order. Round 13: quickdraw dorje, manifest Hammer (no AoO), touch hits, deals 1d8+2 damage (damage needs to be rerolled with a d8 instead of a d6). Round 14: flurry (2 hits) for total 8+6+2d8 damage (need to roll the 2d8). Round 15: flurry (1 hit) for total 7+1d8 damage (Hammer Expires) (need to roll the 1d8). Round 16: manifest Hammer, touch hits, 1d8+2 damage (damage needs to be rerolled with a d8 instead of a d6). Depending on the extra damage added, El Rapido may never have enough HP to swing at Rubi. Please, I would really like you to add this in, as it is a vital part of Rubicanti's offense. Without Hammer, he barely rates as annoying in melee at this level. Thanks, TM |

Interrupted by melee! (1) (Chased!): continue up the pillar at full speed until out of reach. If being followed up the pillar, default to the "vs. El Rapido" section. vs. El Rapido: he cannot refocus while he's raging! Begin the battle by assuming Total Defense (+6 dodge to AC) for two rounds to draw out the raging deep impact. After that, tumble out of threatened range and quickdraw a tanglefoot bag, and plaster him with it. Refresh as needed. After that, quickdraw the dorje of Hammer and manifest/touch/stow dorje, flurry, flurry, repeat. If at any juncture Rubi has not been hit for 4 rounds running, declare Reckless Offense and continue the pounding. Round 11 Arden advances under cover Zwei snipes at Arden (1d20+9-2=14, miss; opposed 6 vs -6, still hidden; 1d20-11=9, heard) Rubi can't tumble away to throw tanglefoot, so he takes total defence, thinking Rapid is raging and can't refresh his Deep Impact Rapid activates his Chain, expends focus for Deep impact (1d20+13=22, miss; 1d20+11=18, no focus), and curses Rubi's ranks in Tumble. Throwing the tanglefoot bag is not an option due to a pitlord call, and has never been a bone of contention. The use of the Hammer dorje as part of Rubi's tactics vs. El Rapido is explicity asked for in my tactics. I felt badly for SoZ because he's new and this is an extremely complicated fight -- but the inclusion of these tactics just might turn the tide of the contest, and so should be explored to their fullest. | Zevox04-22-07, 09:35 PM | @ sonofzeal - Mostly, everything TM said is true and needs fixing (I'll not get involved on the Dorje of Hammer discussion though). I have two things to add: first is that Arden was also supposed to renew his Force Screen when it fell, so his complaints about that and other hits he would get by it falling should not hold (but Arden's shot that round also goes away). Second is that Arden also has a tactic to renew vigor - when his falls (in round 24) he is supposed to put up a new one using 1pp + 2 surge. Zevox |
| sonofzeal04-22-07, 10:54 PM | I'll go back and add the hammer and other factors after my exam tomorrow; I want this fight to be perfect when it's done. Lord knows it should be, after how much time I've put into it. Four sets of tactics, three of those huge in length... yeah, never again. I should let it be known that the #1 thing that makes me want to stop pitlording isn't sneakers or allies or anything like that, it's buff after buff after buff. Each buff requires checking start conditions, manifester level, doublechecking SRD for duration, and contingencies for it running out... and even if I get all that, it's still a bunch of extra mental arithmatic juggling the modifiers everywhere. When a character has more than two or three buffs, I have to doublecheck their buff list almost every time something happens with them, to make sure which of their buffs apply. Sneakers are downright pleasant in comparison. |
| TheMagister04-22-07, 10:57 PM | When I first started, I was in the same boat. You learn little tricks to keep it all straight (places to put the mods where you can't miss 'em, stuff like that). The situational stuff sneaks up on you, though (cover, concealment, area spell effects, movement penalties, etc.). A week that I pitlord and don't (re)learn a rule is a rare week indeed. Keep plugging away at it. We all appreciate your effort. |

Lord knows I rarely had to after pitlording for only a few months at 4 fights per week. Zevox |

The problem with speedrolling in this setup is that, if Arden trips, things go wonky and Zwei gets less attacks but at a higher modifier during the next round, and it all becomes gross to manage. And frankly, when I've been working on it for 8 straight hours, the last thing I want is for it to go gross. Slow and steady keeps my brain from leaking out my eye sockets, or somesuch. Anyway, I'm off to crash now. Don't expect to hear from me for a day or two. |

Um, I hate to tell you, but Zwei's last two hits in there shouldn't have happened. She flurries at +4/+4 (her usual +5 -1 for being a 5th level monk), and Arden's AC with force screen is 25. Without a 20, she misses, and in the last two rounds she gets no 20s. Plus Arden still has one vigor in him - he had 7pp, used 3 of it in his initial buffing, 2 on Crystal Shard, and 1 renewing the vigor the first time. That leaves 1 he can give himself another 15 hp with. Hate to put you through it, but could you correct it for that? It could quite easily change the outcome of the match. Edit: oh, heres something that'll make it easier on you. A number of Arden's swings should've hit and given him the chance to trip. Inertial Armor doesn't add to Zwei's touch AC, so he only needed to hit an AC 18 to do that, and theres a number of times he did that you marked it as a miss. That ought to shorten the fight nicely for you. Zevox |
| TheMagister04-25-07, 01:36 PM | :tantrum: Round 13 Arden advances to nearly directly undernead Rubi and Rapid, and unloads his Crystal Shards (1d20+7=12, miss; 1d100=83, no enervation) Zwei snipes at Arden (1d20+7=8, miss; opposed 8 vs 9, seen!) Rubi quickdraws his Dorje of Hammer, and manifests from it. Rapid 5-foot-steps back, tries to regain focus (1d20+11=24, success), and uses the rest of his action on Total Defensive. Man, I'm sorry! I tried to spell this out for you as completely and as simply as I could, and I still managed to fail to convey what the sequence of actions should've been. However, looking at the above paragraph, I'm not sure what else I could've typed to get my message across. Still, you've rolled 4d8 (even if it was incorrectly applied), so I can look up the rolls in the roller and insert the damage additions over the next 2 rounds or so. (The 4d8 is recorded in "Round 99:" in the roller). Round 13: A manifester can manifest a touch power and touch an opponent in the same round. Rubi should've manifested Hammer from his dorje and touched El Rapido for 1d8+2 damage (came out to 1d8=4[+2] = 6 total damage). El Rapido goes from 29 to 23. He has no Vigor up at this time. Round 14: Rubi flurries and hits twice. You've already rolled damage for the physical punches, and just need to add the 2d8 for Hammer [damage came to (4+2+2) and (6+2+8), totaled: 24. El Rapido is knocked out (down to -1/47 hp). He hasn't had a chance to manifest Vigor, yet. El Rapido doesn't crit Rubi until Round 16 (which never actually happens). This fight is not correct. Regretfully, I don't want to let it go out of a desire to just "get on with Rubicanti's life (and I'll bet that you are just a tad more frustrated than I). Please, Rubicanti is NOT out of this fight...not by a long shot. Heck, he's completely undamaged! TM |

Its never too late to change things in a fight (we've had some edited even after they were supposedly complete and without being held over). Its annoying when one takes this long, yeah (I don't even have any of my characters active this week thanks to hold overs, so trust me, I know), but when it comes to FFAs thats sometimes necessary. Zevox |
| MindWandererB04-25-07, 02:05 PM | Ah...it must have been errata'ed in the XPH errata. I'm looking at the SRD text document. Ah, apparently it was. The print XPH shows it as range personal, target you. It sounds like El Rapido's status is going to remain unchanged, even if everything else does... I'm inclined to grant templer's request that El Rapido be paired this week despite the hold-over. Does that sound okay to all involved? If anyone objects, I'll say no, because by the book, he's stuck until the fight is resolved. |
| Zevox04-25-07, 02:08 PM | Sounds fine to me. His place in the fight is not under dispute - the changes to be made can only kill him faster, and his rewards won't change based on how the fight goes thereafter. I'd say go ahead. Zevox |

| sonofzeal04-25-07, 03:52 PM | In regards to the Hammer sequence - I realise now that I forgot to change the 5-foot-steps when I added in Hammer. I had you 5-foot-step there to avoid the AoO, and that leaves you in a position of waiting for the next turn. Your tactics didn't state whether to step or cast defensively, and in the context of having someone else attacking Rapido as well, it made sense to me to try and stretch things out. Your success rate for Casting Defensively is only, what, about 50%? If he gets the AoO then his attack sequence is bumped up one turn, he gets the crit before he dies, and everything is the same except you'll have one more round of shooting at Arden. Are you okay with that? In regards to the third Vigor/touch AC problems... yeah, you're problably right. I was in a rush to finish it and release the characters, and may have misadded. That, I'll definitelly look at and fix. |
