Fights of the Week: August 29th

Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM MindwandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Link to pairings.
Make sure that your character is not in prison.

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help.
You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool used to suffice until it got taken down without giving us proper notification... the Nerve
Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Recent News and Developments
Currently being discussed in the Council: Reworking credits/rewards/costs.

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

23 fights last week
17 pitlords signed up (with 5 "extras" allowed in preferences)

I would still like to get a week with a light load, so if someone wants to pick up an extra fight or two - I know I would appreciate it.

I Already asked for 5+ a miniquest.. don't think i can handle more than that Telin..

Well - I'm not asking for someone listed as "4" in the pitlord roster to pick up more. I'm asking for anyone who wants to give pitlording a try - to please do try. (MWB probably hasn't updated your entry - so I guess we have 18 then...)

Once upon a time, we used to have a surplus of pitlords. Now, week to week, we are bordering on a state of emergency. I put up a post when I can to give a statement to this fact to hopefully drum up some more.

As much as I like to take up some more fights I can't this week. Personal life interferes it since I don't know if I have internet access from Sunday till Wednesday.

On the other hand my little Gradak gets to fight again after a period of 2 months waiting for a decision over a fight than never came.

I'll pick up an extra fight. It'll bump my net credits to +1 if I do so, which sounds like a good place to be; to me.

Although I am new to this, I have plenty of time to spare.

I can run a second fight this week if the need arises.

Telin, the shortage is no doubt due to the Denth attacks (which use one pitlord per character instead of per 2+ characters). So maybe we'll just have to declare a State of Emergency once in a while until the event is over.

Okay - I've got all of the monster info ready:

Brother Ryu is fighting a small-sized winged biped (outsider) in the arena.
Graashnak Vruuk is fighting 2 small-sized winged bipeds in the sewer.
Erithmu Darkmane is fighting 2 Humans (wow someone actually has a race to work with...) in the temple.
Valanthe Valassar is fighting a Babau in the city.
Sjiggie

08-29-07, 03:16 PM
Telin did you check for my cohorts Knowledge skills or not maybe he can identify them more that just medium bipeds.

Sjiggie

The relevant knowledge scores for Valanthe's Cohort:
+10 Knowledge Arcana, Dungeoneering, Local, Nature & The Planes
+12 Knowledge Psionics

I have also sent the tactics for Brother Ryu's opponent and for Graashnak's opponents. Working on the other two and then onto Bulgar's tactics.

@ Whitebaron: If you want you can take my Free for all fight but I think it might be a bit too much for you as it is only your second week of pitlording.

@Templer10: Longshot's monster info is up here (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=13596110&postcount=1265)

At all my players please send the tactics as soon as soon as possible because I don't know how my internet access will be after the weekend. Thanks Sjiggie

You can have one of mine. They're both hold-overs from last week I didn't manage to get done in time for a variety of reasons, but I did want to have only one fight this week, so if you want to take over the one I never started on, its all yours. I put the tactics for that up for grabs last week here.

i'll take it. just two questions: everyone of those xills gets equipment, right? and who writes their tactics - me?

since it seems to help zevox it's even better for me. lighting dark - i'll have to be careful about those spot and hide things......

Yes, they do all get equipment (though only for their CR, so its not that much each), and yes, you do write the tactics.

Edit: As for the lighting, you might want to run it with normal lighting. Thats what we had last week, so its what t10 wrote his tactics for, and now that the monster has been revealed, hes not allowed to change them. Seems unfair to change the lighting on him now. I know I'm going to use normal lighting with the other fight.

Just Check the equipment Guidlines Before you buy the gear - i.e. No more then 10% wealth spent on expendbles (so no fly potions for them TY very much).

Also you are supposed to make then and gear them up before seeing what they are fighting and the tactics i sent.

I should be getting 1 credit this week, not 2, because..

Eamane (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=13165723#post13165723) was supposed to be miniquesting with Sjiggie, not paired. If for some reason she cant miniquest this week, I would rather have her not paired than go to the arena.

EDIT:

Also I notice that there are a variety of maps for the ECL 3 league this week. Purposeful or...?

Tactics have been sent for the other two Denth fights.

I've run out of time to write Bulgar's tactics right now - but they should be along in the evening or tomorrow morning at the latest.

Ahh crap! That's a mistake; the program just doesn't know that, so I have to correct manually.

All right, correction time. First of all, your miniquest is EL 3, because it's in-cycle.

Second, I'll swap Petyr Darry (Callix) for Eamane.

And of course, all those maps should be the Arena.

I was under the impression that all mini-quests were in-cycle now. So the rule about the EL being able to set is outmoded then? Or is there some situation under which it can happen?

If I'm mistaken about the the mq thing, thats good news for me, since I can bump Kykal up to ECL 4 with an out of cycle mq, but I thought we couldn't do that anymore.

But I'm fine with EL 3 miniquest regardless.
Sjiggie

08-29-07, 05:40 PM
All in cycle MQ are with a minimum EL of your ECL because somebudy can easily do a MQ with a lower EL as his first fight and then have an acces number of Spell/PP available in the next fight of the Cycle or more Expandables. Out of Cycle MQ don't exist anymore so no out of cycle MQ to bump Kykal into the next ECL with that MQ.

I'll set up the MQ in a second

Yes, they are all in-cycle. Which means you can't abuse the system by having a level 10 character go on 2 EL 1 miniquests and then unleash the wrath of God on an opponent on his third fight.
You can go on a Miniquest as part of your 3-Fight Cycle. The minimum EL is equal to your ECL.Quest Goal and EL: Every quest must have an EL. Since all quests and miniquests take place within the 3-Fight Cycle, the EL of the encounter must be at least equal to your ECL.

Well, you couldn't do that anyways as you can only have one miniquest per level. I plan to have one (or a quest... or a campaign) each level for Eamane, which is why I didn't want to go in the arena again.

And yeah, I understand the logic behind it, but the wording in the rules that says you can set the EL of your miniquests confused me. I'm guessing it now only serves if someone wants an EL above their ECL. Which is tomfoolery, but possible.

Not neseserly if you think you can do it And - more XP after all - I almost end all my cycles with Elrick with over half my spells unspent And can probably handle an ECL above me.

HMM one thing to note- You are supossed to MAke the Xills (i.e. buy gear) As if you are equiping them for REgualr arena combat - not spesificly for this 1 fight. And i DO insist you follow the rules on such things.

also note taht my tactics called for countering abilities i cant think off with appropriate spells (since i had no real idia what iam facing) and i do have freedom of movement memorized.

Templer10: Whitebaron is discussing our ECL 3 fight. My Rennae has two Pearls of Brain Lock up her sleeve, and his half-giant monk/psywar has a +12 grapple to my halfling psion's -4. You are not getting Pearl-nuked, although as a group of 3, that's a pretty good general tactic.
whitebaron

08-30-07, 09:07 AM
@t10: i was making the xills equip at work, without a further look on your char sheet.

basically its mwk shortswords and bows in different variations, cloak of res+1 and some protective/enhancing potions. since they need 2 swords, 2 bows etc., most of their money is spent on this.

i got 600 on potions, which is roughly 10.7% of their wealth, but none of them is a game-killer - just the usual stuff (protection from xxx/CL2, mage armor, shield of faith/CL2, enlarge person, 2*clw) . if you feel the need to force me to drop a potion of clw here to get below the 10%, just say it. ;)

and - i'm still 600 below the money-cap. without armor, there's really nothing useful to buy for them... and arrows for 600 gp - oh my will they be heavy. :)

Guild random events are up.

This is getting silly. Four attacks on TLT, three on EHTC, two on CEF and PSI, one on TAO, and none at all on WAR. (@Telin and Zevox: Didn't we have an idea how to make it not quite so imbalanced? Coulda sworn.)

Yeah, the maximum number of attacks for them to suffer. I'm thinking next week I may eliminate TLT and maybe the EHTC as possible targets, at least until the others get hit some more.

Zevox

Currently the attacks are pretty lopsided:

4 TLT
3 PSI
3 EHTC
6 CEF
2 TAO
2 WAR

I'm not really lobbying for a change of this week's assignments - but it would be nice to "spread the love" to the other guilds...

I would support an official policy that there be no greater that a 4-attack difference between any two guilds. That would make CEF exempt for the time being until TAO and WAR caught up, and that's basically the treatment TLT got, as well.

Well - remember that the absolute maximum number of attacks was 27? (I think) - so that would be more than 4/guild.

I'd definitely be fine with restricting it to 5 and dropping one of the attacks on CEF (I'd rather not use a guardian for this event - I want the players to get the chance).

You misunderstand. TLT got passed over when it reached TLT 4, WAR 0. Now, it's CEF 6, TAO/WAR 2. Same difference of 4. I'm suggesting that the difference between any two guilds get no greater than that.

@Telin: So I'm writing up the last bit of my tactics ... and thinking some ...

Rith's Lore value is +9 ... Monster fights state that DC5+CR = Class levels ... So going on the assumption that each of these humans is CR4 (4 class levels or 2*CR4=CR6) I think I get to know the class levels of my opponents
TelinArtho

08-31-07, 10:17 AM
I'll double check - but I swear when I looked at Rith he had a Lore value of +7 (Cleric 6 + 1 Int).

If you have +9 I'll see if it gives you anything more.

EDIT - I see it now... you have Lore +7 listed in your class abilities - but you also have 5 ranks in Knowledge (History) which provides a +2 synergy bonus...

Fix your sheet next time :P

2 Human Cleric 4 (you can safely assume Denthian clerics)

I have to admit - reading your tactics - it looks like the potion of Enlarge Person is a part of your "engaging tactics"

(it's entirely possable for my buffs to be interrupted.. if interrupted, then skip the ones and attack)

Once Contact is made,Drink the potion of enlarge, and start swinging the axe.

The first sentence says to skip the ones [above?] and attack.

The second says - once contact is made.

If I were your pitlord - I'd probably have run it exactly the same way.

The difference here is that the potion of Enlarge Person isn't listed with your buffing sequence. You say to draw it and move out and only drink it once "contact has been made."

If you didn't want to drink it on sight - when did you want to drink it?

And the mephit isn't at 2,2 - the mephit is at 7,3 when you draw and drink that potion.

I think this is directly in line with your tactics.

Actually as telin said since the Enlarge person potion was mentioned After buffs i had you drink it - you also made direct referenses to it in the combat tactics - "Once Contact is made,Drink the potion of enlarge, and start swinging the axe.. Try to draw them in with Aoo's if possable"

so there are 2 direct refrense - first ONCE Contact is made - i.e. AFTER you spot them- drink the potion and Also - TRY TO DRAW THEM IN WITH AOA- AoA which WOULDNT be possible if you arent enlarged - so sorry but ANY reasonable pitlord would read it as use the potion no matter what.

Well. There is this;

-> Xuan, knowing that he can't win this retreating fight before skate time runs out, <-

That's just wrong. There is nothing to stop me for retreating for another 4 turns (The last time I attacked him was in r6, if your basing this statement on 'delaying' rules, I have until r16 before I have to do anything else, more than enough time). I have 80' movement on a retreat, making it easy to break charge lines until he slows down. Then I have a superior speed and the 5th retreat will leave him without the ability to base me.

Or in other words..

I don't have to accept him being able to attack me in melee. So I wont. Please rerun this fight without this R9 action.

That said, a very well run fight otherwise. Thumbs up for a new pitlord.

EDIT: Also, all my damage rolls should be +2 higher; he is an Elf so I get my favored enemy bonus against him; I PM'd you with this exact information, remember? ;)

FYI, NPCs normally use elite array, not 25-point-buy. Elite array is one example of a 25-point-buy, but the RAW says you should use the array, not the buy.

More importantly, as I checked on this: Elite array is used for NPC with PC classes, which the lich adept does not! It should have used standard array, which is even weaker.

You cant heal or manifest vigor or ANYTHING but move (which would provoke AOA's) or delay while Nauseated - And you were nuasated from essentially the first round of contact and the memphits didnt enter their own cloud i checked for that- once of them had to go around once or twice - they did breath weapon from outside of it once and otherwise waited for you to come out of the cloud (which you had to do since you need to roll fort each round otherwise).

Well if you insist on using this then all monster's with class levels will be significantly weaker than the PC of their CR this gets even worse with the limited amount of GP they get.

Aahhh...

HAAAA...

HAHAHAHA....

Okay. But no.

See, if they are using NPC classes, they get to have multiple levels before they increase in CR.

And they have no 3FC so they get to use every single ability they have on one fight, always going nova.

Limited GP? Boo hoo, cry me a river.

But yeah, I'm not very sympathetic for the monsters, since, you might notice, we are supposed to be able to beat not one, not two, but THREE in a single day, without losing. Are we even anywhere close to that? The monster win/loss ratio was 50/50% last I checked (which was admittedly, awhile ago and with the old GP rules). If you had a 50/50% win/loss ratio for every encounter in a tabletop game (i.e: every other session there is a TPK), that would be a little messed up, don't you think?
templer10

08-31-07, 10:23 PM
Ill gladly take a monster fight with a Classed NPC over a monster from the list especially the higher ECL's any day of the week But that's doesnt neseserly mean the NPC's with class levels are 2 weak (in general) since they can go nova- it's the fact that in higher ECL's the Normal monsters are simply not meant to be taken out by any single char so some (read - most) gladiators can't beat them.
Sjiggie

08-31-07, 10:23 PM
Okay so you say that a lvl 11 lich adept with access to a very limited spelllist with only 3rd level spells can be a dangerous threat to a lvl 10 character with triple the wealth of the lich and if the're a spellcaster acces to 5th level spells/powers or other powerfull abilities. Any lvl10 character can take one of those with relative ease while other CR10 monsters are more difficult to defeat. Now if you lower stats of them because they only have levels in NPC classes it becomes easier to defeat them. Now I'm not talking about tabletop play but for here in the CoCo where you are expected to lose every other match yes I think this monster is too weak to be CR10 creature.

Btw anyone other then a Full caster with Access to FoM would have likely lost to that lich since eventually you fail the save vs it's paralize ability and then it's all over... But the adept's spell list IS truely pathetic.
Sjiggie

08-31-07, 10:34 PM
FoM helped Longshot a lot that is why I didn't went for the touch and paralyze tactics but the Adept can't really cast any buffs except for the Bull's strenght/Bear's Endurance(useless to him)/Cat's Grace and the protection from alignment spells. Aid and bless don't help the lich either since they are mind-affecting spells so with that limited spell list you either go for the Lightning bolt/scorching ray tactics or for the paralyzing touch.

I noticed this in your comments:

I tried as best I could to get a second Energy Missile off; remember, you need to refocus before you can do so.

This is not true. Focus is not required in order to use a power. A psionic character could go their whole lives with no psionic focus and never have a problem using a power.

Seeing someone climbing into a rope trick should give Therador a VERY GOOD chance to find the entrance into the rope trick and follow him there. I mean the rope is still hanging there the moment Therador is directly beneath it. On the next turn where Kervan draws the rope up into the rope Trick Therador sees the rope slowly vanishing into an invisible opening. It doesnt require beeing a genius what is going on there.

There are several problems I see, but naturally I only need you to correct them if whitebaron wants you also to correct something.

- In round 6, Darian readied action goes of before Wooly starts spellcasting => he has no chance of disrupting the entangle.

- As Niqil said, you dont need a psionic focus to use powers so in round 7 Darian should move closer and manifest another Energy Missile. Round 8 should be using a charge of dorje.

- The dorje of Energy Ray is only ML2 and thus deals only 2d6+2 damage.

I dont see the result changing if you correct these mistakes, so I leave it up to whitebaron if he wants you to or not.

Well, three questions would have to be answered. One, is it possible to enter the area of the Rope Trick without actually climbing the rope? Two, is it possible for Therador (a Large creature), to somehow find his way up into an extradimensional space that's only 5 feet off the ground and facing down? Three, can he see Kervan at all, given the darkness?

A - Yes. Read the spell. The opening is still there if the rope is up there or not.

B - Yes, with squeezing if necessary.

C - A spot check should decide this.

I have an opinion on the spot thing:

There is no LoS at the start of the fight due to the dark lighting conditions. IE: Round 1 = no way that Thera could 'see' Kervan unless he makes something like a 400ft spot check (80spaces/2 * 4(lighting) = about a DC 150 spot check, Listen would still be a DC 40)

Thera has darvision but only out to 60 ft. This also may have the side effects of changing where Thera is when Kervan comes out and turn this somewhat into a hiding match.

I mean you can roll a random start square if you want, but Thera doesn't 'know' which start square Kervan is in.

i'm sorry to do this, but you'll have ro rework some of the fight. i would not try to avoid readied actions at all costs, and certainly not the first one - it doesnt matter if he finds me on his move or he readies half of his turns.

problems i see:

* Mane has no "seek" - Trick. i cannot tell him to search for Darian. so he can only stay at my side(following my moves after i finish them) until i tell him to do differently. which would be right after darian hit me (free action for animal companion), after i cast entangle (which will go off, since darian cannot interrupt me, since he readied for LoS, not spellcasting.)

* I could have seen Darian already in round 2 to 3, i got LoS there, he has cover, but didnt try to hide. - but this is not important, he'll need the first to hit anyway, so let that be as it is and restart in round 6. darian hits, wooly saves, i'm fine with that. but afterwards mane should at least base him in the midst of the entangle. (depending on which square he stands on, he could even get an attack in this round...) note that his speed on double move is 100ft = 20 squares. he is always able to base darian. if he stands next to him, darian has to take the AoO when he moves away, or retreat.

*as lonewolf already said, the dorje is 2d6+2, not 3d6+3.
*AoO in round 9 wouldn't hit, but you used the wrong AC(see below)
--
notes:
- the wolfs damage you used is wrong - its 1d6+3, not 1d4+4 (same average, but less deviation) .
- if someone stands up from prone, the AoO is in his prone position. so he still gets the -4 AC. But: you can't trip him again, since he is still prone.
- the time roll is given universally, not done for each round. its 4 hours for this week.

PS: i never said to use the SNA II not at all. if i'm close enough to draw the heat metal and cast, so be it. but don't waste moves to draw scroll, if he is tripped. the tactics explicitly say that this is the time to cast SNA II for 3 wolves if mane can see him. i can live with defeat to darian (said to lonewolf its 60-40 or maybe more in favor of him) and i can really live with not using
SNA II(saved for next fight then), but please correct the entangle/basing/energy missile/dorje issues. if my fight calculations are right, it should cost him one additional charge of his dorje to win. ;)

Two, is it possible for Therador (a Large creature), to somehow find his way up into an extradimensional space that's only 5 feet off the ground and facing down? Three, can he see Kervan at all, given the darkness?

Havn't read the fight, but...

1) Rope Trick does not specify how to get into it in the description. It also has a way of removing the rope, but doesn't say that it ends the effect. I would rule that the rope is not nessicary to enter the space.

2) Don't know what Terador is, but I believe it is possible. The rules do not state where in your space you Line of Sight comes from. As far as I can tell (from the cover/hide rules), your line of sight originates from any spot in your space, so yes, Therador could spot it (in a home game, I would call for a wisdom check, since there is no reason to look 'under' an empty space on any of our maps; but that doesn't seem supported by the rules).

3) I think Erithmu covered the spot thing well.

erithmu is certainly right about the spot. no way he can see this far.

about the basic principles of rope tricks:

if you see the window, you can try to get through. you can't cast or shout something through the entry, but you can at least get through.

Since rope trick explicitly says that the size of the creatures is not important, squeezing would not be necessary.

as for the spot: DC 40 to spot for immobile, invisible window is still hard to do. DC 60 to exactly pinpoint the window as to be able to go through... (see srd, special abilities and conditions -> invisibility) ... seems impossible

Wooly (whitebaron) vs. Darian Thorne (lonewolf) (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=13601080&postcount=1267)

I fixed from Round 6 since that's where things got mixed up in the first place.

Unfortunately, lonewolf still wins. :weep:

i can live with the result of this fight better than the previous :) - i just hate the dice gods (and they hate me, for all that's worth)

side note: if you are not entangled, you need no concentration check. even if entangled, the DC would be 16, not 15. the initial DC for entangle from scroll (and all other scrolls) would be: 10+1.5*spell level (11). Scrolls don't get your DC, just the minimal DC needed to cast it. since mane rolled a 1, it doesnt matter.

at least i did not use more spells or expendables. ;)

That makes for just a few more minor changes to make.

Hopefully the dice will show favor next week.

EDIT: Fixed save DC for Mane vs Entangle (though it didn't matter with rolling a 1). And deleted the Concentration check from Round 7 that wasn't needed.

errm - other opinions since iam really not sure what is the correct answer here.

It seems that Therador has a 1/3 chance of running towards the correct square in round 1 because of the impossible listen and spot checks required to identify the correct one.
If he doesnt pick the right one, you can have him surrender on round 10 after Kervan finishes his buffs, to avoid forcing you a complicated rerun that almost surely ends in the same result.
But I want that 1/3 chance.

Even if that square had been randomly determined, how would Therador know it was? With the rope having been pulled up before he got there, and the portal invisible, he'd be clueless.

Regarding making the concentration check for casting a spell while entangled:

It's a DC 15 + SL/PL check. This is outlined in the glossary of the PHB.

The CL of the effect doesn't matter at all (except for the reflex save DC and the effective range of the spell).

I dont think that drawing up the rope should be a free action => you cannot do it in round 1. => Therador would hava a chance to see the rope.

But it doesnt make a difference now.

Thanks for the run Erithmu but I didn't wanted to use CopS because it wouldn't make a real difference here so could you leave it out of the summary. No need to edit the fight since the result would stay the same. Valanthe was a bit unlucky...:(

Done ...

I don't think many of the ECL6 bracket could handle a Babau under the conditions given.
Sjiggie

09-02-07, 12:48 PM
When I saw it was the Babau at first I thought that I would never gonna win this but then I remembered that Valanthe had Crystal Shard (which I took because I saw Ephraim using it sometimes with good use:)) so I thought that it was the best chance I had on winning this. But then the low rolls and Telin going after my cohort first killed the plan.

For some reason I can't edit the host document. First it asks me which program I want to use to edit it. I select notepad (or whatever the english name may be. It is just the basic text editting program from windows) and when I add the line and try to save it I can't. It says I don't have the right to save things in that directory while I'm using my administrator account. I have windows vista if it makes a difference

Err.. yeah. Windows Vista is a very hard customer when it comes to that kind of thing. I don't have alot of experience with Vista unfortunately (I've been avoiding it on purpose), so I'm not sure what to tell you, aside from going on google and searching for how to edit your system files.

why didnt i charge in round two? getting right in front of my opponent and doing nothing hardly seems to be a good tactic, and she doesnt get an AoO there. so i should charge with touch attack for grapple here already. (and i've got really good chances to grapple her on a charge)

Because your charge range is 90' and your opponent is 100' feet away, essentially. Running to base was the most you could do at that distance. Not to mention that the distance was diagonal, making it much more.

You asked for two grapple checks, not two attempts at grappling.

Reducing your touch attack to +2 would have made it less likely for you to get into the grapple in the first place, so I interpreted your request as flurrying once you were in the grapple itself, where the difference between +12 and +10 wouldn't be as important. (Which were the numbers you quoted)

If you had lived another round, you would have started to flurry your grapple damage checks. Your opponent was at 13 and your average grapple for a round would do 16, so all you needed was another round to win, most likely. The good fights come down to that anyways, both of you had a decent shot at winning this.

ok, then i gotta do my next tactics in the a0-printable regions.
anyway, nice descriptions, keep the fight as it is if you like.

as for your maths:

1 attack to get into grapple:
4 against AC 14, = 55% chance to hit with touch.

2 attacks to get into grapple:
2 against AC 14 = two times 0,9*0,945% total around 70% to hit with touch.

so it is always favorable to flurry against an opponent you have a good chance of hitting. even point for this is 25%. if you flurry your 25% (so its 2*15%), it rises to 27%. only at 20%, it gets lower. so if you need 17+ to hit, its bad to take more attacks at -2 penalty. else its good.

Well since the roller won't work for me and not all of us are computer savvy enough to peform whatever "fix" was mentioned, I don't really have any way to check the rolls.

As an aside, I have to say that the attitude displayed in your post is very discouraging to see as a player. It's that type of attitude that I am seeing more and more of here that has me seriously considering walking away from this place after more than 2 years.

sorry about the attitude was more then a little ****** and tired after 40+ Rounds of 2 pin attempts, 2 rake attempts, attack with scyte, 2 ressist to Pin 1 attempt to escape - these number of rolls you simply CANT do individually or i would still be doing the fight up to now.

Anyway - if roller is still wonkly iam posting the rolls here- kind of hard to understaqnd since it doesnt really cut and paste well

Snaga (The Dread Dormammu) vs. Shugho-zact (Eamane) can be found here. (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=13601015&postcount=1266)

All the deleted rolls were because of the fact that I kicked myself after realizing, after feedback from several friends, that you don't need a Concentration check to use a wand while Entangled. Spell Trigger only has bearing on whether you can use the wand, not when you can use it.

I hope there aren't any other mistakes.

Already fixed the MM damage...CURSE my poor reading skills!!!

Please let me know if there are any more.

Results and such will be up after I get some sleep.

@ Macbrea/lonewolf: Just saw this in Sammuel's tactics, think we better clear it up.

Also note that Samuel has Darkvision 60ft which I forgot to note on the character sheet(you can put him in prison for that if you want, but I will correct it after the fight anyway)
How do you figure? Halflings don't have that naturally, and neither the Phrenic nor Ghost templates give it to you.

sorry about the attitude was more then a little ****** and tired after 40+ Rounds of 2 pin attempts, 2 rake attempts, attack with scyte, 2 ressist to Pin 1 attempt to escape - these number of rolls you simply CANT do individually or i would still be doing the fight up to now.

Anyway - if roller is still wonkly iam posting the rolls here- kind of hard to understaqnd since it doesnt really cut and paste well

CoCo Dice Roller v0.3 beta - Dracazar

The roller seems to be working again, so I was able to look this fight over....and you are not going to like what I am about to say....

The bulk of this fight is going to have to be redone.

The reason? You gave the griffon way too many attacks.

A griffon has a bite and two claw attacks every round in a full attack. What I am seeing in the roller is two pin attempts and two rake attacks every round.

Griffons do not get to rake in a grapple. The rake attacks are only available if the griffon is diving or charging, as per the pounce special ability description. If you look at the full attack line in the monster entry, rakes are not mentioned.

Further, a griffon may only make actions in a grapple based on it's BAB. It has a BAB of 7, therefore it has 2 actions in a grapple per round. If it is using both of those for pin attempts, then it can't do anything else that round. However, if the first attempt to pin is successful, then it can use it's second action to do something else.

Q: How do natural weapons work in a grapple?
A: As per the 3.5 FAQ, under normal circumstances, a creature can attack with only one of its natural weapons while grappling (and it takes a –4 penalty on such attacks; PH 156). A creature that chooses to make grapple checks in place of attacks (that is, to damage its opponent, escape from the grapple, move, pin its opponent, or use its opponent’s weapon) is allowed one grapple check for every attack that its base attack bonus would allow (even if it doesn’t normally make multiple attacks in this manner). A creature with BAB +0 to +5 may make one grapple check in place of an attack, BAB +6 to +10 two, BAB +11 to +15 three, and BAB +16 to +20 four.

So as much as you aren't going to like it, I am going to have to ask for this fight to be redone starting from when the pinning attempts start in round 7.

Actually, I have to disagree. In the SRD and Monster Manual 3.5 the Rake is listed as a separate ability from the pounce. And if you have the Rake ability, you get rake attacks in a grapple; that's part of the definition of the Rake ability.

That the griffon also gets a rake when pouncing is a special component of it's pounce ability.

when i read hograth's tactics i thought as much and checked the SRD - it say this About rake: "A creature with this special attack gains extra natural attacks when it grapples its foe. Normally, a monster can attack with only one of its natural weapons while grappling, but a monster with the rake ability usually gains two additional claw attacks that it can use only against a grappled foe. Rake attacks are not subject to the usual -4 penalty for attacking with a natural weapon in a grapple."

as far as i see there is no 2 diffrent types of Rake - so it should give him the extra attacks - So ill need to hear some other ELDER opinions on the subject - Also if the rakes arent possible it means That the gryphon can either Just grapple for dmg (the better option for it) or not grapple at all from the start so you dont get the AoA's since hograth's tacitcs depend on those extra rakes to do dmg and if they arent possible there no point in the Pin.

Can you kindly point me to the definition of the rake ability? I am not finding a seperate definition beyond what is listed in the griffon monster entry.

Edit: Nevermind...I finally found it...was looking in the wrong place.

Edit 2: Ok....here is the quote:

Rake (Ex): A creature with this special attack gains extra natural attacks when it grapples its foe. Normally, a monster can attack with only one of its natural weapons while grappling, but a monster with the rake ability usually gains two additional claw attacks that it can use only against a grappled foe. Rake attacks are not subject to the usual –4 penalty for attacking with a natural weapon in a grapple.
A monster with the rake ability must begin its turn grappling to use its rake—it can’t begin a grapple and rake in the same turn.

So it would appear that my previous non-knowledge of this ability is in error. Let the fight stand. I could go through and nitpick the rolls, but there is no point. I gambled that the pipes would be the greater of my two threats, and guessed wrong. I could have easily used Expansion if I had guessed correctly...but I didn't. So the fight is fine as is.

Ah, I see. Never realized all undead got that - thought it would need to be in the template for it to be there.

First - relax.

second - yes you did - since tanglefoot has such a close range - usually it's thrown beyond it's normal 10 foot range since you cant actually get to that range - and here you did in fact have problems with it.

third- wouldnt make a diffrence here if you threw it from no range increments.

about that - i saw samuel mentioned using psionic grease to get out of the grapple - i dont think that can work here since he actualy can't grease himself being incorporeal (or at best 50% chance to work).

Yeah. Usually if I want to write a full-out story to go with a fight (or even 'just' round descriptions in a longish fight) I split it into two posts. Towards the higher ECLs this tends to become mandatory even for 'no frills' fights, especially if there is more than two players involved.

Balthazar vs tiris is done (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=13622595&postcount=1273) - Rolling hell And iam sure some mistakes were made But the sheer number of rolls made (200+) make it pretty impossible to find it for me- so have fun i wont edit unless it's proven to be fight affecting.
I don't have any problems with the fight, but I should point out a couple of things about pinning an opponent.

If you only have one grapple attempt per round, there's no point in trying to escape a pin (since there's nothing you can do after you escape anyways).
More importantly -- if a character is pinned, not only is his AC reduced by 4, but his Dex is treated as 0. So, for instance, Tiris's armor class would be reduced by 13 in total. Note that it does NOT say this in the Grappling section of the rules! It states it in the "Favorable and Unfavorable Conditions" table (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatModifiers.htm#favorableandUnfavora bleConditions).

Thanks for pitlording; I know how annoying those fights with a bazillion rolls are (see Sunstroke vs. Noko for details ;)).

While there is no point in trying to escape a grapple, this is true... there is precious else you CAN do when pinned. It's not a matter of 'what is best to do' it's a matter of 'what can you do'.

Hey - i was just Bored and looked over your Fight and a couple of comments on the Format For the future for ease of reading and understanding-

please dont do Rounds in Roman figures- iam not sure everyone will know what you mean.

You need to do an orderly End of round summery that includes position on the map (X,y) grid - or attach a map, also you need to note each active buff And when it ends, Also nu,ber of Spell levels or power points left for this battle.

all of this will not only help peeps understand what is going on when readit the fight - it will help you when running it -

just try doing an ECL 10 fight with 40 or so pps for each side to spend and 5+ buffs and 1-2 allies on each side to keep track off (essentially any fight one of MY guys is in lol).

Well, it's something of my artistic technique that every fight I've been doing for the last two weeks I've changed the format of my round structures. (The other one I did this week I used a different language for the number aspect of the round, each round. Roman Numerals is pretty tame when compared.)

The reason why there isn't an 'end of round' report is because this fight didn't need it. There are maps every time the people move, which isn't a whole lot over the course of the fight. When they are standing stock still and doing nothing but shooting back at each-other it's perfectly reasonable to cut the notation.

Similarly, with the tactics only mentioning one spell cast in the entire fight, I saw no reason to list spells available. If it's the only spell, what does it matter how many more she can do in the battle?

I appreciate the comments, but in general I tailor my fights to their needs. If it was a higher ECL combat with lots of movement and multiple combatants, there would be more maps and round by round status reports.

Sometimes I wonder the same thing about my character, Kykal. Despite having the whole spiked chain trip feat line... she hasn't actually attacked anyone with it yet. SHooting people from 100+ ft away is much safer. Go figure ^_^

I think it's really just an intimidation thing. It keeps people who arn't as good in melee as you from wanting to get close. And if your good at ranged too, that's just fine, eh? So it rather works.

It's roughtly the same reason Lady liara (oen of mine) has the whole mounted combat Line of feats - Nobody in their right mind will get anywhere Close to these kind of guys if they can help it so assuming you have other decent ways to kill and/or good AC/saves youll win most times.

Thanks for pitlording! It seems I am accumulating a lot of bad roll karma ...

Hehe
Kursk the master bowman...

Why did you even buy melee weapons?

Tbh, I decided that for the next character I will probably just buy a substandard melee weapon for ECL3 even though I think it will be another melee char. From these fights and many other i saw in the ECL3 league (i haven't read much ECL4 yet) a strong bow arm and decent AC is definitely a very strong option in most fights.

P.S: I found the format of the fight quite readable. And second eamanes opinion that for ECL3 fights, especially stationary ones, the end of round updates can actually make the fight harder to read since they break up the flow and often do not contain useful information. After all, most of these fights are decided by who gets the high rolls first, not who is standing where, most of the time.

While there is no point in trying to escape a grapple, this is true... there is precious else you CAN do when pinned. It's not a matter of 'what is best to do' it's a matter of 'what can you do'.
I agree, but I was just trying to point out that templer10 could have reduced the number of dice rolled in the fight by (1) not bothering with the "escape a pin" and "maintain pin" rolls and (2) noting that the griffon's rake attacks probably hit much more frequently (because of the big minuses to Tiris's AC).

About that - when pinning someone - The one pinned dont suffer the -4 to AC vs the pinner -only vs other peeps - i dont know what it means about the 0 Dex thing but i could see the argument going either way since with normal grapple again you lose Dex to Ac exept against the one you are garppling.

but in any case pleae note next time that 0 dex rule if you plan on grappling since it's pretty obscure rule.

it's not that obscure. - you are quite helpless while pinned, so everyone outside of grapple can hit you as if you were an immobile object.

this dex penalty and ac penalties always only apply when you fight more than one person, else it's peanuts.

Simply put.. the dice hate Istima this week.
Major problem: what makes you think TK Manuever requires a touch attack? Theres nothing physical trying to touch him, so how could he possibly avoid it?? And even if were there, the touches would be at +20 (Istima's ML + int, as per the power), not +12 (where'd that come from?). I'm not sure how much that changes, but I'd be willing to bet its a lot - between the TK manuever and fly, theres no way Sammuel should ever have gotten into melee to use his touches once he was grappled.

Plus, his grease tactic is impossible. Grease can only give him that benefit if he uses it on his armor, and since hes not wearing any, thats a no-go. (Plus, like templer10, I question whether he could even use it on himself to begin with, since hes incorporeal - at the least it would suffer the same 50% failure chance any other power used on an incorporeal being does.)

Plus, your math seems to be off somewhere. In round 15 for example, where Sammuel supposedly escapes the grapple, he rolls a 13, and you give him a total of 33. How is that? He has no ranks in that skill, a dex of +6, and if it were legal +10 from the grease, which totals merely 29. And thats just one I noticed right off the bat - I don't have time presently to go through it more thoroughly (working on my fight).

Magic has only a miss chance on incorporeal targets if it comes from a corporeal source.

Grease can affect armor or clothing.

Unless you have any rule reference why grease shouldnt work on ghosts, it works.

Might I ask where that is in the rules? The incorporeal subtype's description seems to indicate that only force and positive/negative energy magic has no chance to fail when used on an incorporeal being, source regardless.

Perhaps, but most likely in Istima's favor. Your tactics have you using brain lock then, which needs a miracle to pass Istima's PR, and even if it does Istima's +15 will should overcome it. That leaves you at a distance and grappled by TK maneuver, rather than nearby and grappled, which is better for Istima.

TK maneuver allows you to do a grapple check using the normal rules. A grapple check starts with a touch attack. The reason that it dropped to +12 is because the moment the Psicrystal starts concentrating on the power it uses his Int instead of Istima's for purposes of the strength of things. So, going from CL 12 + Int (+8) to CL 12 + Int(+0).

A ghost may cast spells on itself without miss chance. It is always on the same plane as itself. He has a solid form in the plane that he is casting. And therefore, can easily effect himself with it.

CL +12 + Int(+0) - Size (12) = 0 when grappling. :(

Telekinetic Maneuver
Psychokinesis [Force]
Level: Psion/wilder 4
Display: Visual
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./ level)
Target: One creature
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 round/level
Saving Throw: None
Power Resistance: Yes
Power Points: 7
You can affect a foe by concentrating your mind upon its current status and the status you desire, once per round. You can perform a bull rush, a disarm, a grapple (including a pin), or a trip. Resolve these attempts as normal, except that they don’t provoke attacks of opportunity, you use your manifester level in place of your base attack bonus (for disarm and grapple attempts), you use your Intelligence modifier in place of your Strength modifier or Dexterity modifier, and a failed attempt doesn’t allow a reactive attempt by the target (such as normally allowed on disarm or trip attempts). No save is allowed against these attempts, but power resistance applies normally.

No mentioning that size modifiers dont apply.

That would be a sensible houserule, but a houserule that doesnt exists yet nonetheless.
Macbrea

09-04-07, 04:16 PM
I haven't applied them to this fight. I did apply the fact the concentration is taken over by the psicrystal. The Psicrystal uses it's intelligence instead of the original manifesters to determine strength. I believe that is the correct way it should be done. But, that might need a clarification at a later date.

What has happened throughout the fight though is Istima has missed every single one of the (Hits 1-50) rolls I have given for all of the various powers I cast at samuel. If I change about the fight to different spells being cast I still am required to keep each of the miss chance rolls. As a result I will be in a very similar spot at the end. I have to check if the changes in grease have effect the escape artists checks though, I read the tactics saying +20 to escape artist checks instead of calclulating them myself (Grease +10 , Dex +6 = +16). I need to go back through and alter that.

Um, no, no it doesn't. The psicrystal may be concentrating on it now, but Istima was still the manifester, which is where the int modifier comes from. Theres absolutely nothing in either solicit psicrystal or telekinetic manuever to indicate otherwise (and the fact that the Psicrystal uses its owner's concentration rather than its own when using a solicited power, and that you aren't forcing it to use its own, nonexistant ML in place of Istima's, definitely indicates the contrary).

Ok, I need to relook at that. I used the numbers from the tactics not from the SRD. That can be fight effecting.
Alrighty, thats all I can ask. I'll look over it myself later, when I've recovered from running that Lorian fight.

Actually - I'm not sure this is correct myself. The Solicit Psicrystal power states that the psicrystal takes over concentration, but if a concentration check is needed, then use the manifesters' concentration skill (as opposed to the psicrystals').

If it were to change the relative strength of the power, I think it would mention this explicitly (since it would be pretty rare for a psicrystal and master to have the same primary stat).

Slight problem that is probably going to change things...

In round 8, you have Tyden manifest defensively, and he fails to do so. You then indicate that he loses the power. Is there a reason that focus was not expended to auto-succeed on this check? Part of my general tactics include the line to "use any and all skills whenever necessary"...I would certainly think this qualifies. Also, is there any reason that 5 ft steps were not used to manifest out of a threatened area altogether? Touch charges won't go away until the hit is successful, so there is no limit to the timeframe I have to get back in to melee....I would think 5 ft steps also qualify as "any and all skills".

Same thing in round 9...could have 5 ft stepped, manifested, and then would have had the charge available the next round.

I would appreciate if you could look at those two issues.

That "any and all skills" statement is of limited use. It's like saying, "Improvise in the most optimay way for me at any time." That's not your tactics, that's the pitlord's tactics. As such, it becomes a complete judgment call for them, and it's not something you can rely on. And it's definitely not something you can call after the fact--it's like saying, "I didn't say to do this, but I should have, so please do it anyway."

Even so....expending focus and 5 ft steps should not be things that I should have to ask for.

And in any event, the line in my general tactics states "Always make use of relevant skills/abilities for given situations." I would think that expending focus and 5 ft steps is clearly covered by those instructions.

I can see the 5 ft steps being an 'assumed' tactic, but the psifocus/concentration (to me) seems like something that would be necessary to specify. Although it may be obvious to you that you have no other use for psifocus, pitlords may not notice that.

If it speeds things up, and is okay by you, we can simply roll the 2 dmg rolls to see if you get a lucky auto kill (with mirror images to get through and avg dmg not enough it'll be tough, but do-able). Then Ninja can spend the clw charges to cover what would have been needed. Faster, and doesn't force Telin to readjust an already 20 round fight.

The problem is that isn't the only thing that it will affect. If there is a hit against an image, then that is one less image I am rolling against in later rounds, which means the odds of hitting in later rounds goes up. It's a snowball effect. And if one of those connects with UN rather than an image, then that could alter the fight entirely.

On the focus issue NiQil - I'm afraid you are going to have to specify that. Not only is it something I would only do when specified, I am not so well versed in psionics to remember it. Everyone that expects me to use a focus for something will specify it in their tactics.

As to stepping back to manifest - that is completely contrary to how I read the usefulness of touch spells. Judgement call again - but if you wanted that - the easiest way is to specify it.

As an aside to all of that - realize that one less image allows one hit. One hit at 1d4+1. Versus your opponent's full hit points. Excuse me if I think it is pretty unlikely you can do 20+ damage with 1d4+1 (the first rolls for attacks would have been a hit versus an image and a hit versus an image - if I remember correctly).

So what you are saying is that the use of an ability to auto-succeed at something is less likely to happen than something that has a chance to fail like manifesting defensively? Why should expending focus to auto-succeed on a concentration check require any more specification than to manifest defensively, or 5 ft step out of a threatened area to avoid an AoO?

Or to put it in terms you are more familiar with...if we were talking about a mounted opponent with the Mounted Combat feat and appropriate Ride ranks, would you require them to specify to make ride checks to make use of the feat? Or would you simply allow them to be made just by having the feat? If you do not allow it automatically, then that would be contrary to how most fights here are run. If you allow it automatically, then I would love to see how the use of a feat is more automatic than the use of a skill and class ability.

I am really at a loss to justify what should be automatic actions for any PC here. You allow defensive manifesting, but won't allow a 5 ft step or focus expenditure to provide the same effect as defensive manifesting in a much safer manner. The logic there just baffles me. Here is an example that comes to mind that hopefully will convey my frustration here:

PC is in a corner with enemies near and the only avenue of escape is to move through threatened areas past the PC's. The PC is allowed to walk through the threatened areas while fighting defensively, but is not allowed to use their maxed out tumble skill to tumble through those same spaces because he didn's specifically say to use tumble for this purpose.

That's what this comes across as. I really don't know what else I can say here. Obviously nothing is going to change, so I guess there is no point in continuing. So I won't say anything further...

I think it's time to start looking for a successor...

If you had psionic feats you intended to use, but the pitlord expended your focus to manifest defensively, would you be happy? And with the tumble analogy, they would be allowed to tumble, but they might not get assumed use of their luckblade's reroll if they roll a 1 and fail (Eg had to move through an enemy). And a 5ft step would make you unable to deliver the touch power that round, making it clearly nonstandard to move so that the target is out of range.

@Niqil
You know, you've had a rough week.
I can totally empathize.

Callix brings up a good point; Psionic Focus is used for multiple things and generally only on one of the myriad options in a given combat, it's safer to let them know you want to use it (I do).

However, when their arn't all that many options, I do assume the use of focus to auto-succeed on concentration checks. That's how I run my fights.

One of the primary tenets of COCO that I've noticed is that the changing of a fight to correct things is a privilege, not a right. If there is a strong basis for changing the fight, it becomes much more likely. Thus we all try to have tactics that specifically say what we want to do; and deviating from those tactics is one of the primary reasons to change a fight aside from straight up rules mistakes (wrong numbers, unclear interactions).

But in the absence of those strong reasons, the changing of a fight grows less likely and is within the realms of pitlord discretion. Naturally, the longer and more complex a fight and the more 'snowball' effect a change will have, the less likely it is to get changed without strong reasoning. Thats just the nature of human beings, the more difficult something is, the less likely we are to do it when we don't have to.

Some of my own fights have been affected by this very same issue; How much of tactics is 'automatic' and how much 'has to be specified'? Well, I remember a time when everything had to be specified. If you didn't, your pitlord might or might not improvise for you.

The current incarnation of COCO is leaning towards more automatic tactics, to cut down on extraneous tactics; the ones that you say in every fight that it becomes a bore to write them. However, these automatics are not as thorough as I would like. (For instance, while '5 step to avoid AoOs' is automatic, 'avoid unnecessary AoOs in general' is not.)

So I find myself including the automatics in my tactics anyways. It took a loss for my failure to do so for me to start doing that, unfortunately.

Now, you've been around a good deal longer than I have and you've had losses to this kind of thing before I'm sure.

But in the long picture, I think it's a small thing. Whatever you do, don't leave COCO because of one bad week. You're a cool dude and this would be a lesser place without you.

if there's one thing i learnt from my fight vs. rennae longhollow from callix, it is this: what you don't mention in your tactics, won't happen, even if it would make much more sense. Eamane didnt use my flurry, which seemed obvious to me. i didnt explicitly state it, so there where two grapple attempts less made. (most likely, this wouldnt have change the outcome, but who knows, its possibly 2* damage)

if you like to rerun any such fight, you'd have much work to do. i'd be the first one to have such things rerun too, then.

i'll explicitly state my tactics in the future - all of them. you can copy/paste such things or make them default tactics - thats what they're for afterall. but don't expect any pitlord to know when to expend psionic focus (especially not those that don't play psionic characters as well) - its simply not feasible to say "use any and all skills" - this could be as well "please write my tactics"

It's a hard line to walk.

I've been criticized before about my way of running fights, but I don't recall anyone ever really HAMMERING me on it.

I run each character as if I were the one playing it. This means that I use the tactics as firm guidelines. I fully realize that nobody can plan for EVERYTHING. So when unusual situations crop up, I put myself in the players' places and make decisions that are "best" for the character in the situation.

Sometimes this is bad, but mostly it's good. I think the characters should "speak for themselves". Bad (read: shortsighted) tactics will ruin a well-built character, but barring that, the better character usually wins. That's a tough pill for some people to swallow, especially in this day and age -- where "equality" is taken to the extreme and the lowest common denominator is often used as a benchmark for success.

Hey, not everyone wins all the time.

But it's HARD (emotionally) to lose because your pitlord doesn't make good sound decisions for your character when you can't be there. I'm not saying I'd have noticed the psionic focus just sitting there and used it to auto-succeed on the concentration check, but if I had noticed it I wouldn't have thought twice about the "rightness" of using it. It's one of the character's advantages, and it's not being used for anything else. Why not?

Same thing with jumping over streams instead of wading, tumbling instead of provoking AoOs for movement, and 5' stepping to disarm with polearms instead of armor spikes. Some things just make sense, and any experienced gladiator is going to do the common sense things that make him live longer. It's not the character's fault that our system renders his creator powerless during combat.

In my mind, a pitlord is there to play the character to the fullest of its capabilities while remaining within the boundaries set by the player's tactics.

Again, a fine line. But when it is walked well, it makes for good competition.

{shrug}

That's how I see it.

Since other peeps mentioned it i think what we have here is simply diffrent styles of running fights - as A pitlord - and with some experience (70+ fights), i would say iam somewhat in the middle about "Obvios things" - I will do very obvios things - 5 footing, Tumble when there is a decent chance for it to work, casting defensivly etc But i wouldnt for instance use the psionic focus unless spesified - mainly becuase i wont remmber to do it since i personaly almost never use it for that reason.
i also wont 5 foot backwards to do Touch spell but prefer to risk the concetration check if it's not mentioned otherwise simply becuase in CoCo - wasting a round on just activating a power/spell isnt usually the Norm.

about other improvisations- ANYONE who had me run fights know i dont do improvisations unless i absolutly have 2 and if i do improvise i dont choose the most optimal course of action - i see it as if you want the best option - you need to write it yourself and it's not my job as a pitlord to decide on the best course of action since it will just mean taht cahr is a lot mroe likely to win.

BTW - has it ever occured to anyone to write a set of DEFULT tactics for the so called "standrat" stuff- i.e. - unles spesified otherwise do this: 1)tumble to avoid AoA with modifier of +X, manifes/cast defesivly if modifier is +Y - it will take some work But it can save a lot of trouble later on in this kind of cases.

this is a good guideline, though no one can be expected to see every aspect of a character just by running its fight. so if you want something really done, you have to state it or be happy with the result. i was quite unhappy with the results of rennae vs gwerdan this week. - recheckin my tactics, i must say that i took flurry for granted as well breaking los or seeking cover. if i played that fight, i'd have done things differenlty. but hell - each time you battle and lose, you learn something new.

and if it is krusk fights: all you need is a barbarian in luck to win bow duels. ;)

No - what I am saying is that if you want to guarantee that I'm going to do something - specify it in your tactics. Focus is used for a lot of things - the thing it is used for the least, in my experience, is auto-succeeding on concentration checks. Just because you might not have a better use of it doesn't guarantee that I'll see it that way.

Or to put it in terms you are more familiar with...if we were talking about a mounted opponent with the Mounted Combat feat and appropriate Ride ranks, would you require them to specify to make ride checks to make use of the feat? I think it's time to start looking for a successor...

Your mounted combat feat example is kind of a special situation. Someone who has a psionic focus can use it for concentration, but can use it also for a myriad of other things. Someone with mounted combat can only use it for one thing - negating one hit per round against the mount.

Using mounted combat as the example though, my analogy would be like this. The fight involves a mounted character versus an opponent and his ally.

Scenario 1: The tactics specify that the opponent has priority over his ally. In the fight, the ally attacks the mount and hits. Do I use mounted combat here to negate the hit? Or do I not use it here - in anticipation of an attack by the opponent?

Scenario 2: The tactics do not specify a priority in targets. The ally attacks first and hits the mount.

Scenario 3: The tactics specify a priority in targets and priority on mounted combat.

I'll tell you right now that in scenario 1 and 2 - I'll make a call (probably just to negate the first hit in any given round), but in the third - I don't have to make a call. Scenario 3 is what I am always looking for. That's all I'm asking for.

And in case it isn't clear to anyone involved - I am running the characters as I would have run them if they were my characters when the tactics don't fit. So if a choice between manifesting a touch power defensively and stepping back to manifest it, hold it, and touch on the following round - I would always take the former (unless I had something specific in the tactics to say otherwise).

So if a choice between manifesting a touch power defensively and stepping back to manifest it, hold it, and touch on the following round - I would always take the former (unless I had something specific in the tactics to say otherwise).
This is the crux of the matter (IMO). I can't guarantee that a pitlord will act the same way I do in various cases:

Expending focus to succeed at Concentration checks (I probably would unless there's only a 5-10% chance at failure)
Standing up when tripped (if I think I can finish my opponent off pretty quickly, don't bother)
Escaping from Web/Entangle/etc. (usually don't bother if the chance of escape is less than ~80%; use fire on a Web spell if need be)
Withdrawing vs. provoking an AoO (try to avoid the AoO unless I have some kind of sky-high AC)

If I don't specify what to do in those kind of cases (and sometimes I don't), I'm stuck with whatever the pitlord gives me. I may not like it, but I save my indignation for fights where the pitlord blatantly ignores my tactics or ignores the rules.
