Welcome to this week of the COre COliseum!

This thread is for questions, comments, and concerns solely regarding the pairings, quests, and campaigns for this week. Please keep manners and a calm, understanding mind with you at all times.

The rules of the COCO can be found here: Rules of Gladius (http://www.wizards.com/leaving.asp?url=http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=448520&origin=)

Have fun, be nice, and RP whenever possible.

[color=blue]I've always wanted to do this.

Hagrid II (Pittbull) vs Random Monster (6 Drow Elves): Mind Rogue

I hope they are they standard drow, from the SRD. ;)

Kota (King Uther) vs Random Monster (Yuan-ti: 1 Abomination, 2 Halfbloods, 5 Purebloods): Pittbull

I'll need some help to calculate, their treasure, shall I use the table of the DMG?

Both fights will be run in the standard monsterfight-arena?

Both fights will be run in the standard monsterfight-arena?
Of course not. They are going to be the college-bound drow that took the SATs with FyreDragon. ;)

And unless Cat says otherwise, I do plan on running it in the Monster Arena, which should be an interesting change of pace for me.

Important Notices

From this week on, the Monster Fights are back! I have distributed them throughout the leagues so that we can see much testing. These fights will take place in the new Dungeon Map. Most Monsters need some flesh to their bones, especially treasure. You can find the amount of treasure on DMG,p127 and the CR is the "NPC Level".

Let's do an example with ...let's say 1 Abomination, 2 Halfbloods, and 5 Purebloods Yuan-ti ;) The Abomination is CR 7 so it gets 7200 gp of treasure ...but wait! The entry says "double standard" so we have to double that amount to 14400 gold. Each Halfblood is CR 5 with double standard so both get 8600 gp each. Lastly, the Purebloods are CR 3 with double standard so every Pureblood has 5000 gp worth of equipment. Feel free to use it as you see fit but don't buy things the monsters cannot use, nor things mainly specifically designed against the gladiator. Think about what you would buy if you are the monster.

Some monsters have "treasure none" in their entry. That means, no treasure, like for the Giant Praying Mantis that is going to eat Santos alive. Any questions, feel free to ask me.

- The All vs All fights worked very well so I increased the number this week.

- I've already mentioned it in the Tavern but I want to repeat it here that you can now acquire advanced allies.

- Cerebus gains 1 credit for his story in the Alex vs Heindal fight. Sloisel gets 5° for providing us with a Pitlord Avatar, and Iced gets 2° for submitting a photo which I will upload soon.

That's it from my side
Good luck!

@King Uther: I could not find a gladiator named Dlamar (TelinArtho) on the roster so I didn't set that quest ready. Perhaps you can help me?

@Mind Rogue: Just saw that the drow have poison as extraordinary ability. That means, these 1d4-1 doses they each carry do not count against their treasure. They are free for them.

[Flashes a mischievious grin]I think someone is going to have a little fun with 6 drow that each have 300 gp of resources and 1d4-1 flasks of knockout poison. I just wish I had more gold to spend. At fifth level, it seems like Hagrid's foes should have more than 1800 gp between them.

Sorry Telin, but Zahrat just had to have crafted those handy dandy scrolls. But look on the bright side, I haven't spent over 1000 gp (and I think it was 1500). Of course, now I should go and plot my course of action so I don't advance to level 4 by losing.

I have a question, oh great Caterane.

The poor Hydra who wants to eat Mer-Man gets (1/10 coins; 50% goods; 50% items)

How do I calculate what treasure the Hydra gets to spend? Not like the Hydra is intelligent enough to use items anyways.

@King Uther: Please send me your tactics soon, this fight will be very demanding and I'd like to start it very early.

P.S: Does anybody have the stats as a file for Yuan-Ti, they aren't in the online SRD.

08-04-05, 11:52 AM
@Mind Rogue: Sure, you can. "Monsters" with class levels are created by the Pitlord. After all, there are not only rapier drows out there; and if you face a drow wizard monster you won't take weapon finesse rapier either. Same for skills, abilities (standard array) and equipment. Pick them as you wish and send it to Pittie.

You both have been a part of the COCO longer than I have, and I have never fought either of you. And I have never fought a free-for-all. I'm trying to think of a gentlemanlike way to issue a formal challenge, but there isn't one. So....good luck to the both of you.

This has never been the case. The COCO has always allowed Yuan-Ti's, and other items not copied into the SRD. There are a few examples, and COCO has used them before because they are in the Core books.

And his has to do with copyright laws anyhow.

Well, now I'm going to be forced to bring out my EL 3 character to kill me some Harvester.
Am I the only one who thinks that sounds like a challenge? "Drums please! Tadatat, tadatat, tadatat..." and a horn chimes in, "Haunt... haunt, haunt, haunt, haunt, haunt, haunt, haaauuunt! Here ye, hear ye! Step right up and place yer bets! Harvester III has been challenged by the Stranger! Who could it be!?"

*•. Z
King Uther

08-04-05, 05:33 PM
I'll have him up tonight if I can. It's too good of prey to turn down. Plus now we have so many gladiators that a team fight or free-for-all can happen. All too fun.
Caterane

08-04-05, 05:35 PM
It's not much of a problem to build a one-shot character specifically designed against a gladiator, and using 3000 gp just for one fight.
King Uther

08-04-05, 05:41 PM
I wouldn't do that. That would be stupid. I was going to create an EL3 character just to have arena fights for fun, and now that the Harvester has returned it seems like the perfect opportunity.
MystErikEry

08-04-05, 05:41 PM
MystErikEry: Rumplebucket tactics received. You are aware you only get XP for your targets, right?
Yes, but Rumplebucket's gotta do everything he can to keep himself alive, if he's going to be able to take out a target :P
If the option presents itself, he should go after his target (which I clarified in my second PM ;) ) but really, he's just got to get rid of anyone and everyone he can. U_U;
He has practically zero offense, making it hard for him in multifights. If he can take someone out, even if it isn't a target for him, he'll be pleased :D

@Cat/Pitlords:

Little confused about the monster fights and the treasure they should use to buy equipment.

Is it the treasure for an encounter of the CR? Or is the treasure for a NPC of the CR? (I would look up the page in the DMG as you indicated, but I do not have a 3.5 DMG) I only ask, because, for your example, the Abomination would have 2600 for a CR7 (doubled to 5200) instead of 14.4k. Pretty big difference.

Going with your example, I'm going to assume the chart listed for NPCs of that level, but unfortunately will have to use the chart in my 3.0 DMG for reference since it is not a part of the SRD (as far as I know...).

Thanks

I PMed Iced this week and ask him for a mini-quest, I probably should have PMed Pitlords too! Telin, I talked to Iced about it and what I wanted to quest for, next time I go on a mini-quest, I'll PM you.

Pitlords, is this cool to have Iced pick-up the mini-quest? I'll be sure to PM you rather than just write on the sheet next time.

Sorry for confusion.

Okay, I've posted the drow's stats up to Hagrid's Fight, as well as putting the little '/' in the (/SBLOCK) after Hagrid's tactics.

I really think that Drow should have Blind-Fight to help counteract their darkness ability, but I don't think it would have changed much; just cause them to use the ability earlier which could possible nullify perhaps one of Hagrid's attacks. Some of their aid another attempts would have failed because of the lower attack bonus, and others would have succeeded because of the reroll, so it is possible they would have actually scored one hit (a scratch comparatively), but that is unlikely.

Unless I hear otherwise, I'm using the value of 3300gp for a 4th level NPC to start off for the gargoyle fight. If Pitlords (or someone else) could confirm this value as correct, I would really appreciate it. Also, if it is correct, I would think the drow fight might be a little different, because I believe 1st level NPCs get 900gp not 300gp...

@Zerone: Tactics received.

A couple notes on your character:
You should not make the notes about your funnily named weapons invisible, I couldn't see them until I pasted the quoted text into word. This is especially important because Katanas and Wakizashis are actually supposed to be bastard swords and short swords. It's fine to name your weapons for character, but be specific about what they are.

In order to craft masterwork armor and weapons, you need a bonus of +10. You have +8. Do you want to change these to full price, or change them to non-masterwork?

Also, Craft(weaponsmithing) and Craft(Armorsmithing) are seaparate skills, so they require separate tools. The tools also both cost 55gp, not 50.

Crafting a saddle would require Craft(Leatherworking). It's probably a DC 15 for a military saddle.

Crafting a holy symbol probably requires Craft(Jewelry) or something. It's DC might be low enough that you can do it untrained, though.

Crafting Arrows would require Craft(bowmaking). I'd guess the DC is 12 (the same as it is to craft a normal bow), which would mean you could do it untrained (+2 Int) if you had tools.

@LLMadCow: Just waiting on tactics. I can wait until Sunday, but no later.

o_O Why not?(has this been previously judged on?) You can hold the charge on touch spelll indefinately....so long as you don't cast other spells in the meantime.[even speaking in regular d&d terms, I always have my wizards hold charges to get one spell of quickly at the begining of combat] I used it as a pre-buff, as noted in my character sheet:

cast invisibility so Familiar can deliver it as touch spell & hold the charge(duration: indefinite)

As for whether the familiar can target me, I don't see why not ;). Only place it's really useful is when you want to hold a touch spell indefinately, though....

@Erithmu

Well, the whole thing about me using my spell levels probably would have been resolved with my switch from my crossbow to magic missiles (I only wanted to fire a single crossbow shot). Since the missiles are auto-hits - I think this might make a big difference (even if I only get 1 in there's a 50-50 shot that he's down or disabled when I do my axe attack). There's a very small chance I would have failed a second MM (10% failure and all).

Ok. I didn't see this as problematic, but I'll change it.

In order to craft masterwork armor and weapons, you need a bonus of +10. You have +8. Do you want to change these to full price, or change them to non-masterwork?
I think this should explain it:
+8 Craft: Armor (4C, 0F, +2 Int, +2 Tool)
+10 Craft: Weapon (6C, 0F, +2 Int, +2 Tool)
I only have MW weapons. The Armor is not MW, the Armor Spikes are. I see how this is confusing when looking at the way I wrote it. I'll change it before the next pairings.
• Plate, MW Spiked Full (60 lb, 0 xp, 775 gp*)
Also, I see I did the math wrong. Yeah, that is confusing. Sorry. I'll list the MW Armor Spikes under Weapons and just normal Armor under Apparel. Will this make more sense?
• Plate, Full (50 lb, 0 xp, 750 gp*)
• Armor Spikes, MW (10 lb, 0 xp, 200 gp*)
Also, Craft(weaponsmithing) and Craft(Armorsmithing) are seaparate skills, so they require separate tools. The tools also both cost 55gp, not 50.
I just reread the Tool: MW description, ok for the 55 gp price. However, anyone who has seen or done any metal work can tell you that Crafting Armor and Weapons would use the same set of tools - Blacksmith tools. I'll buy one of each when there is a ruling.

Crafting a saddle would require Craft(Leatherworking). It's probably a DC 15 for a military saddle.
Until I see a ruling I'll leave it as is. In the end it's only 10 gp more, perhaps I'll just change it after the fight's over.

Crafting a holy symbol probably requires Craft(Jewelry) or something. It's DC might be low enough that you can do it untrained, though.
It's wooden. I'm sure I can widdle away a block of wood with a 14 Int. :)

Crafting Arrows would require Craft(bowmaking). I'd guess the DC is 12 (the same as it is to craft a normal bow), which would mean you could do it untrained (+2 Int) if you had tools.
Again, an Int ability score of 14 grants me a +2 bonus to my roll. No need for the tools of the Boywer/Fletcher craft skill.

Actually, you do need tools for the bow/arrow crafting. You don't have to have masterwork ones, but if you don't have a regular tool (5gp), you will suffer a -2 to your check for using improvised tools. This means that your check would be +0 (+2 int, -2 tools), so you wouldn't be able to craft your bow.

I mentioned this last week.

As I see it, in round 5, instead of reloading and readying, Daeren would have readied to cast a Magic Missile. (This would've failed because of the ASF) You don't have all of the relevant coordinates up, but it would seem I am only 110-130 feet away when he pops out, so if he's closing, I'm very likely to be able to hit him with a magic missile (either from the scroll (at 110ft) or from memory (at 120ft).

Then, in round 6 (which is posted in round 7), Daeren would not be very intimidated by the Giant (being a stubborn dwarf and all...) and would cast another Magic Missile.

Also, the way you have written the rounds, Daeren actually LOSES an action by readying - which I don't see happening. Up until round 5, each Daeren and Jodan have 5 actions. In round 6, Jodan gets an action. In round 7, Daeren fires his ready action and readies another and Jodan gets an action (so he's at 7 actions and I've only got 6).

So I would have another action to cast a magic missile.

In round 7's action, I would have cast another magic missile.

In round 8's action, as you posted, I did cast a magic missile.

So, in total, I would've cast 4 magic missiles (instead of 1). If I was in fact out of range in round 5 - it would only be 3. With one failing because of ASF already, that leaves me with 1 or 2 before the axe swing comes in.

Rules of Gladius: Skills (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6466576)
Making arrows without specific tools gives a -2. Using the cheepo tools gives no pluses or minuses.

As for whittling a holy symbol, using a dagger or bootknife would be an improvised tool, giving you a -2 to the craft check. You could do it, but it wouldn't look too pretty.

As for blacksmith tools, the common sense answer is that one set of tools works all kinds of metal. But this is one of those rules that dosn't make sense. For every type of Craft skill you need the 5gp (or 55) artisan tools. For any profession you need the 5 (or 50) regular tool. For any other skill you need the appropriate tool kit (heal kit, disguise kit, etc.). It's all in the link above.

@Xanadu: The rewards are wrong. Milo fell first (he was Ansom's target so Ansom gets XP for him; it does not matter who defeated him). Now Ansom's new target was Rumple who lay bleeding on the ground. Ansom does NOT get xp for Alac until he kills Rumple so it would be logical to kill Rumple first, then Alac. That way, Ansom would receive 3x winner rewards.

Milo gets only loser rewards because he defeated no one. Defeat = kill. Later there might be allies who can cure a gladiator from bleeding so we need a concrete line. Same for Alac: he has defeated no one.

If the fight stays as it is, Rumple actually gains 1x winner rewards because one of his targets (Alac) has been killed while he was still alive but as I said: I think Ansom should kill his bleeding and helpless target first to gain XP before killing Alac.

Yep, was just blind on your weaponsmithing skill. 'Twill be cool if you fix the armor thing, though. You definitely need two different masterwork tools, though. We'll see what a Pitlord says...

It's wooden. I'm sure I can widdle away a block of wood with a 14 Int. :)

Like I said, low DC, you're probably fine.

Again, an Int ability score of 14 grants me a +2 bonus to my roll. No need for the tools of the Boywer/Fletcher craft skill.

You need some normal tools, otherwise you must use improvised ones, which give you a -2 to the check. Miniscule amount of gold, though.

All in all, it's little enough money that it won't affect this fight, but make sure you fix it for next time.

So you're suggesting that we encourage the helpless slaughter of the defeated? My understanding is that this was a free for all, so he would have no allies who would be capable of reviving him. From the gladiator's perspective, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to finish off somebody who's out of the fight when there is somebody else breathing down your neck. It's also a pain on those people who try to be merciful at the end of fights by stabilizing the fallen.
Caterane

08-06-05, 06:36 PM
Yes but above all we need concrete rules and definitions on what means defeated and what not. You cannot leave it up to the Pitlord to decide on his own.

You also cannot forbid allies in FFA fights. They are part of the character concept.

We've discussed FFA fights to the death and this is the best solution.

Pitlords:

Agree with Ansom getting rewards kill killing sleeping Milo.

Re: dying enemies with no possibility of stabilization. As a DM would you give a level 1 commoner XP for doing nothing but CDGing a dying ancient Great Wyrm Gold Dragon?

As PC in an arena setting, would you walk over to a helpless dying combatant (who you dont know is dying) to CDG them while a living threat was in plain sight? No, unless there was an "all or nothing" XP rewards system which runs into the Great Wyrm problem outlined above.

What I originally was going to do was [Strikethrough] Rumple the moment he fell unconscious because he had no chance of stablization and thus utterly impossible for him to do anything or get any rewards.

Ansom did not defeat Rumple, I think most DMs would find it problematic to reward him XP.

Something else to consider. Gladiators are unaware of the hit point status of opposing gladiators - they do not have "deathwatch" spells always active. Are we really going to expect gladiators to run all the way to the other side of the arena and use actions to determine the status of fallen targets? Only in a team battle where there is the possibility of restoring a fallen teammate to full health is it realistic to take time and actions to ensure a dropped enemy stays dropped.

As far as Ansom was concerned, he saw Rumple lying on the ground with an arrow stuck in his chest performing zero actions. The logical move for him was to deal with an immediate threat who, for all he knew, was his next target. Without instructions stating "I dont care if I am being shot, move to the other side of the arena and make 100% dying enemies are dead" I would be uncomfortable putting gladitors at greater risk than they already face.

I do agree with allies and team fights, the dynamic changes and the line needs to be drawn there. In FFA fights where no hope of stabilization exists, is it not logical and fair - as a DM do we give Ansom XP for Rumple when he did nothing but kick dirt in the face of a corpse - to say dying = rewards?

If the rules are the rules, because Maverick sent me no such tactics, I would not change how he fought.
Caterane

08-06-05, 07:08 PM
The wyrm example is mood because that won't happen in the CoCo. But what might happen is that one day someone says "cast heal on dying Rumple" (so that your hunter is occupied again), or an ally heals his master. These problems might arise and we have to have an answer to them. The mere prescence of Rumple and Milo had an impact on the tactics and the fight no matter what they did in the end so they are worth xp.

Please note that you suggest to base defeat on Pitlord Arbitrariness. The Pitlord decides who has defeated whom when, only based on his impression. But this impression is oftentimes not clear, and the higher in level, the less clearer it will become. We need concrete rules!

And we have concrete rules: you have a target and you have to kill that target. Coincidently, there are 2 other guys running around who make your task (of killing your target) more difficult... or easier, in our case. That's the nature of FFA fights. It is simple, it is clear and understandable, and there is no room for interpretation on who defeated whom.

I think it would be better to let someone move one when they've knocked someone down and then force them to come back to their quarry when they get back up then to force them to CDG someone who could not possibly get back up in any way shape or form. For something that completely removes the subject from the battle, such as dropping them to negative hp or blasting one of their ability scores to zero, they are out of the fight and any normal gladiator would ignore them for more pressing matters.

I admit that "Cast heal on Rumple if he falls" is a possible tactic, but in a free for all match, it's most likely a pretty unlikely one. For a team match, it would be a possibility, but then you would be free to go after the cleric anyway. If you're worried about an ally reviving them, then require them to take out the ally, although there could be trouble differentiating between those who actually can do anything and those that can't. I think that in general, Cohorts should be required to be eliminated, but in general, a mount, familiar, or animal companion could be ignored. A mount will usually flee combat if the rider falls, an animal companion will generally stand over the druid and only bother those who either approach or continue to threaten either of them, while a familiar generally has almost no combat ability whatsoever. Of these, only a familiar could possibly have the sentience and the appendages to be able to revive the master, but that is incredibly unlikely. Almost invariably, if the character only has non-cohort allies, once he goes down, he stays down.

And I notice you didn't mention what this does to characters who prefer to leave their opponents alive if possible.
Caterane

08-06-05, 07:50 PM
That stabilizing thing is just flavor, nothing more. If we go by the rules, you have to kill to win. The Nimbus revives them anyway.

The problem is that there is no concrete definition on what means defeated. In this fight it was clear but imagine Rumple had cast an empowered maximimzed ray of enfeeblement on Alac and Milo had sneak attacked Alac for 80% of his hp. Perhaps now Ansom only won because Rumple had greatly weakened Alac? Not to forget the major damage from Milo. You see, now it is not that clear anymore.

Therefore we need concrete rules. If you have better ones that are simple and easy to understand, please tell us.

Xanadu's proposal for concrete rules:

A gladiator gets credit for a kill if he places his target if all the following conditions apply from the time gladiator falls until end of fight
dying state (i.e. less than zero HPs)
incapacitated (e.g. dying and no diehard feat)

What does this mean?

Held, paralyzed, poisoned, ability drained, slept, disabled, et. al, aren't enough to "kill" your target.

A dying gladiator who is revied and raised to 0 or greater HPs [no longer dying] by an ally, team member, or another glaidiator is no longer considered "killed".

Why is this necessary?

To prevent undeserved rewards/free XP and GP for attacking a dying target who cant fight back :noway:.

To ensure that rewards most accurately reflect outcomes of FFA. As the system currently stands Ansom gets XP for "killing" Rumple (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6890044) for doing nothing but shooting an arrow into a gladiator who had -9 HPs and would have died the next round. Had this been a regular 1 Vs 1 fight, Milo would get XP for killing Rumple since he landed the blow which placed Rumple in a dying state with no hope of revitalization.

How does this effect my gladiator?

If you leave your target in a dying state and fail to reduce your target so he is at -10 and in a "dead" state, you run the risk of losing a kill should your target ever get healed .

So, you have to make a choice - just as you would in a real gaming environment. Do you spend (waste?) action[s] CDGing something which most likely cant/wont ever harm you? Gladiators should submit in their tactics whether or not they want to do this - it is a real choice with other people sniping at you, especially if you have to run 100 feet away!

Why else is this necessary?

By the rules, there is no way to legally determine the status of fallen gladiators without the deathwatch spell. Aside from preventing dubious rewards for attacking virtual corpses, it also removes the possibility of metagaming. Consider:

Gladiator A fires an arrow 180 feet away and hits Gladiator B for 14 HPs. Gladiator B now has -11 HPs.

Very very unfair if gladiator A magically knows Gladiator B is dead and starts attacking me when I had to move 180 feet and CDG my target because he was at -6. :nonono:

Do we really want to run down and stab dying gladiators under fire from other gladiators to ensure we get XP?

@ xandu what about a purpose spot check solely to see if the body is still breathing, the DC would be 10 plus whatever the persons current hit-points are. (kinda like how thaco worked) so if I have -9/16 then the Spot DC would be 19 and becuase this is a move action it allows a standard action still be used. I would also rule that you arnt allowed to do anything during this move action IE draw weapon or potion. you are sternly looking at your opponentt to see if he his dead or not.

It was cheaply what happened to you, but think about the opposite side of your position, would you play chesse and shoot at a dying character to get the exp/gp for his death? I mean If I put someone at 1/26 and a wizard hits him for 1pt of dmg does he get the kill? its the same thing to a differnt ext.

your baseing it on who does the most dmg to someone then it wouldn't matter, as far as a familar helping you or an ally healing you, I don't see why a familair would be able to heal you, or for that matter wake you up. You can't tell it too and it wouldn't know if you are dead or not(or would it becuase of the meta-thinking) so far all the problems of the rules fall around the same thing Tactics, If you say your familiar is able to wake you up, or you have trained a monkey to draw a potion of CLW and pour it down your throat, I mean why don't we have Pheonix Downs?

@Xanadu: Well, you don't have to CDG them. Most of the time, you are going to hit automatically.

I have to agree with you though. Once someone is unconscious, they are effectively out for the count. If someone casts CLW to bring them back from the brink, well you lose the xp.

Personally, I'd rather just chase down living targets.

@Vathelokai

Round 7 is the pivotal round in this battle, and I feel that there are a couple of errors here that could very well change the outcome of the battle. First, let me start by correcting a comment you made in my tactics....

Manifesting and readying are both standard actions. Readying an action takes the same type of time as if the action had been done (so a standard action in this case), that must be described in detail when readied (not when acted upon). You could say "ready djore for range, but if x happens don't uses it." Either way, your init resets to right after your opponents. You can't ready 2 different pieces of equip. The way to do what you suggest is the delay action. You don't get to interupt, like on a ready action, but you do get to pick your action in response.

Emphasis mine....leading to...

Initiative Consequences of Readying: Your initiative result becomes the count on which you took the readied action. If you come to your next action and have not yet performed your readied action, you don’t get to take the readied action (though you can ready the same action again). If you take your readied action in the next round, before your regular turn comes up, your initiative count rises to that new point in the order of battle, and you do not get your regular action that round.

So my initiative would reset to just ahead of Corkus.

Now, with regard to what happened in that round. You had me firing a readied action as soon as line of site was established. What my tactics say, however, is...

Scenerio 1: LOS is obtained on opponent and target is outside of 30 ft. If this happens, fire crossbow as a readied action to prevent spellcasting. Once this happens, close to range needed for dorje and entangle opponent. From there, he will be entangled for 5 rounds. Once entangled, put away dorje and I want to manifest an Energy Missle of Fire for damage. Since he will be entangled, no Reflex save should be allowed, so this shouldn't miss. (If this is not the case, and target is still allowed a reflex save even though entangled, then instead of Fire it will be an Energy Missile of Electricity...I'm not sure about that rule so I am covering either way). If still alive after one Energy Missile, repeat on following turn. If still alive after second Energy Missile, reload crossbow and proceed to fire crossbow for three more rounds. If by some miracle he is still alive after this, redraw dorje and attempt to entangle again, and then fire more bolts at him.

What I have bolded is the relevant part of my tactics. I thought I had made it clear there that I wanted to ready the action to fire at the first sign of spellcasting from my opponent....hence me saying "to prevent spellcasting." If my tactics are done correctly there, then the hold person may very well have never connected, as it would require a concentration check, DC 10 + 7 dmg=17 to continue casting. It would then reset my initiative to just ahead of Corkus for the following turns. If this concentration check is failed, it changes the whole battle, as from there my initiative is still ahead of his, and any ranged attacks I can make before she is able to cast will cause her to make concentration checks to keep casting in that turn. Even if my readied action goes off when you have it go off (without changing it), because damage was taken in that round, there still needs to be a concentration check. And since Corkus has no ranks in concentration, that is basically a straight up Constitution check with his +1 modifier vs a DC 17. So there is a decent possibility that I would never be held, and that I would get close enough to entangle him, or maybe kill him outright before I get close enough (depending on damage). So could you please take a look at this and see if it affects what happens? If there is a failed concentration check, that could change the entire battle.

CONCENTRATION (CON)
Check: You must make a Concentration check whenever you might potentially be distracted (by taking damage, by harsh weather, and so on) while engaged in some action that requires your full attention. Such actions include casting a spell, concentrating on an active spell, directing a spell, using a spell-like ability, or using a skill that would provoke an attack of opportunity. In general, if an action wouldn’t normally provoke an attack of opportunity, you need not make a Concentration check to avoid being distracted.
If the Concentration check succeeds, you may continue with the action as normal. If the check fails, the action automatically fails and is wasted. If you were in the process of casting a spell, the spell is lost. If you were concentrating on an active spell, the spell ends as if you had ceased concentrating on it. If you were directing a spell, the direction fails but the spell remains active. If you were using a spell-like ability, that use of the ability is lost. A skill use also fails, and in some cases a failed skill check may have other ramifications as well.
The table below summarizes various types of distractions that cause you to make a Concentration check. If the distraction occurs while you are trying to cast a spell, you must add the level of the spell you are trying to cast to the appropriate Concentration DC. If more than one type of distraction is present, make a check for each one; any failed Concentration check indicates that the task is not completed.

Now if I am wrong about any of this, please don't hesitate to say so. But from my reading of the Concentration skill, that is what I see that should have happened.

Thanks for running the fight. That was short!

SoB you might want to double check your cash, you have large weapons so their dmg is higher, but thier cost is higher and their wieght is higher. Also you say you can use your Combat Expertise for -5 atk and get +5 AC, but this is limited to your BAB.

Thanks for the Combat Expertise tip, of course you are right. I must have been drunk or something.

As for the large weapons, you are of course right that they are more expensive, and I did in fact pay more for them. See the following posts: 1, 2, 3. I have doubled the weights of large weapons, as per SRD http://d20srd.org/srd/equipment/weapons.htm#weaponSize

I didn't plan on actually ever casting Summon Swarm during the battle. The plan was to use the scroll for the Resist Energy on it, which apparently I could actually have done without.

As for the escape artist checks, it wouldn't have mattered because Sola never rolled high enough to escape with it.

And as for the Acid Arrow, wouldn't the damage actually occure on my initiative count because he fired it as part of a readied action, possibly giving the Resist Energy a chance to negate it? Not that it matters. It was a good idea though to ready the arrow to hit me when I cast a spell, but it's a pity it didn't work out for you.

Ok witht he battle of corkus and famine.

1st how does a charge stop becuase I am entangled? can't a person with half-movement still charge? The ground isn't hampered. That is what charge says, the ground can not be hampered and I need a clear line to him. Note. he still is in cover so I wouldn't be able to charge him.

2nd He has cover from me, this is apparent because he gets a hide check. So why would his range attack not have cover agasint me? a new AC of 25 vs his attack of 22 would have stoped the bolt. which would have missed and the Hold Person would have gone off.

3rd how long would he have stayed in that square? by my count he was in the same square for 8 rounds. 5 of which he just sat thier in the corner.

4th when we first spotted each other, I saw him, he saw me. He had his crossbow pointed at me and didn't shoot. So under my tatics I would have charged him. Note this wouldn't have been possible but my character would have thought, "oh he wants to disrupt my casting" just like how my character thought that in round 8.

5th I would like to add on the tatic that if 7 rounds go by and I havent seen him I would like to wait 7 rounds myself just with the ready action to cast hold person when I can.

question is it possible to ready an action and then move? so that the ready action is to cast a spell when you see him?

The Fight (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6892168&postcount=192)
Ok for the battle with Corkus,

If Famine is readying an action to shot me when I cast
And I ready an action to cast hold person only if he isn't waiting for me. I did spot him, he spotted me. so why did I cast the hold person? If my character saw he saw me had a crossbow out and pointed at me. and in my tatics said I would rather charge him then cast a spell.?
I miss read your tactics. I will rerun that again.

It seems every fight I run has the double ready loop in the tactics...

He readies to shot me to disrrupt casting,
I ready to cast hold person when I see him,
I near a clear LoS to cast it so how does he get a Hide Check?
You only need cover to get a hide check, not full cover. He had been hiding the whole time, I just put the roll there then, because that was the first time LOS was established.

I thought I read something in rules of gladius that said with ranks in hide, you can hide (within a number of feet equel to his hide ranks) near a place with cover. Maybe I read the skill wrong, or that was removed in the recent rewrite of the skills FAQ.

further more if he has cover from me, then I should have cover from him so the attack would have missed. Yes i know this is a pivitol round for the both of us. I miss understood the cover rules. My bad.

just some concerns of the battle is all
All i can see is use tatto of skate, ready an action to cast hold person as soon as I see him. If he is only moveing once and then his character looks like he is waiting for me to cast. then just charge him and enter melee. if he withdraws cast touch of madness.
If he stays far away and is trying to buff cast Spiritual weapon from a scroll. Here is my problem with the whole thing. Corkus is walking along, turns his head and sees Famine. Corkus has 1 second to decide wether Famine is caught pants down, ready against casting, ready against charging, ready to run for cover, or just waiting a split second before a normal attack. Which tactic does Corkus go with?

Since the last time I had trouble with this, I have been making char. take sense motive(hunch DC20) checks to make that decision. Corkus has a wisdom of 18(madness) and no ranks so it would be tough to make that call.

So, unless you object or I don't hear back by tommorrow, I will add the sense motive check to the round and see what happens.

The entangle description states that entangled opponents cannot charge. Charging is a full round action, so if entangled it would be interupted, but since the full action was already started, you couldn't go back and change it.

Since you couldn't have charged in the first place, I will change that in rerun#2.

2nd He has cover from me, this is apparent because he gets a hide check. So why would his range attack not have cover agasint me? a new AC of 25 vs his attack of 22 would have stoped the bolt. which would have missed and the Hold Person would have gone off.
That is correct, again, my bad. But if we go with the tactic of 'charge if he has a ready action' then you won't cast hold anyway.

3rd how long would he have stayed in that square? by my count he was in the same square for 8 rounds. 5 of which he just sat thier in the corner.
Rules of Gladius says that there can be a cumulative total of 10 rounds of delays before some kind of intervention. I remember a week or two back, Cat said something like 5 rounds, but I'll stick to the rules as written. There were 5 rounds of delay and he acted on round 6.

That action in round 8 was because of the failed sense motive(hunch) check.

5th I would like to add on the tatic that if 7 rounds go by and I havent seen him I would like to wait 7 rounds myself just with the ready action to cast hold person when I can.
Very cheap. I love it. Unfortunatly, I think it would be wrong to submit new tactics without allowing Prince to do the same. I'd rather stick with what I have.

Each get 900xp/gp

Team 2 Member 1: 300xp/gp
Team 2 Member 2: 300xp/gp
Total: 600xp/gp
Each get 300xp/gp

Assuming the winning team had brought in a Lt. Warhorse: [ECL 3]

Team 1 Member 1: 900xp/gp -25% = 675
Team 1 Member 2: 900xp/gp
Total: 1575xp/gp
Each get 787xp/gp

Their has to be a benifit in playing 2vs2 battle compared to 1vs1. I mean it isnt like faceing two ecls at total different times, they both helped each other so they should get higher exp rewards if the won, and vice verca the other team lost because it was 2 vs 1 at the end. if for some reason he was able to survive and kill them both your telling me he would only get 900/900 anyways?

The fight Kota vs the Yuan-Ti has been posted, it took more than three hours to run it, but at the end Kota had enough resources to win this one. Just look here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6889322&postcount=188)! The Yuan-Ti had no chance, because they weren't equiped to face an inevitable (pixie). @Vath regarding Sir Valkin - you mention that with a potion I would've been able to revive my horse - but what about lay on hands? Even if I didn't use it on the horse, I definitely would have used it on myself when I was down to 4 hit points...

Actually, looking at the fight more in depth, I'm noticing other things:

1. In round 6, you have Foreman take a double move instead of charging, "because of cover" - but there is no cover at all between the two of them (between (-7,-12) and (-23,4).

2. Also in round 6, once Pestillence takes a 5ft step back, she no longer has cover and can't hide because she doesn't have ranks in hide. This means that Valkin has an automatic spot.

3. In round 10, Pestillence has too many actions. Moves to cover, draws dorje (not a weapon, so can't be drawn during move) and fires the dorje (standard). Also, since she only moves to (-23,5), I can move 20' in a charge to her because there is nothing between her and I.

4. In round 12, you can take a 5ft step, but only in a round where you have not moved already (as in you can full attack and 5ft step, but you can't move, attack and five foot step, nor can you do a double move and then five-foot step. Here's the relevant portion from the SRD under Move action in the Combat section:

You can take a move action in place of a standard action. If you move no actual distance in a round (commonly because you have swapped your move for one or more equivalent actions), you can take one 5-foot step either before, during, or after the action.

and:

The simplest move action is moving your speed. If you take this kind of move action during your turn, you can’t also take a 5-foot step

So either, she moves away completely (giving me an AoO), or only takes a five foot step. If it is the latter, I would never need to drop my sword and draw the crossbow. If its the former, I get the AoO to start with.

@Vathelkai

Just so you know, the power Entangling Ectoplasm is different from the spell Entangle. You are correct in that Entangling Ectoplasm cannot affect a large creature unless the power is augmented (a point I totally spaced when writing my tactics LOL), but it does not allow for a save of any kind. It is a ranged touch attack that, if successful, holds the opponent in place for 5 rounds. So near the end of the fight (I forget the actual round number), when I was able to entangle Sir Valkin, he would not have been able to move at all at that point for 5 rounds, at which point the entangle ends. Hence the reason I put, in my tactics, that once Sir Valkin was entangled, to take 5 rounds a Mind Thrust away with all available powerpoints, and once those were gone, to fire my crossbow or CDG with morningstar, as applicable. See the power/spell entries below:

Entangling Ectoplasm
Metacreativity (Creation)
Level: Psion/wilder 1
Display: Material and visual
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One Medium or smaller creature
Duration: 5 rounds
Saving Throw: None
Power Resistance: No
Power Points: 1
You draw forth a glob of ectoplasmic goo from the Astral Plane and immediately throw it as a ranged touch attack at any creature in range. On a successful hit, the subject is covered in goo and becomes entangled. The goo evaporates at the end of the power’s duration.
Augment: For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power can affect a target one size category larger.

Entangle
Transmutation
Level: Drd 1, Plant 1, Rgr 1
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Area: Plants in a 40-ft.-radius spread
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: Reflex partial; see text
Spell Resistance: No
Grasses, weeds, bushes, and even trees wrap, twist, and entwine about creatures in the area or those that enter the area, holding them fast and causing them to become entangled. The creature can break free and move half its normal speed by using a full-round action to make a DC 20 Strength check or a DC 20 Escape Artist check. A creature that succeeds on a Reflex save is not entangled but can still move at only half speed through the area. Each round on your turn, the plants once again attempt to entangle all creatures that have avoided or escaped entanglement.
Note: The effects of the spell may be altered somewhat, based on the nature of the entangling plants.

Also note that my powerpoint numbers are correct. An 18 Charisma gives me an additional 6 powerpoints at level 3 (the powerpoint totals you get from your manifesting abilities modifier scale based on your level). So this means that I may have more powerpoints available than what you have used to this point in our battle. And I believe that TelinArtho is correct in that the Lay On Hands ability would work on either himself or Foreman (aptly named, I have to say...tough as nails and dumb as a brick LOL) to help him extend his match. So all of these points might extend the duel a few more rounds, and could possibly change the outcome (although with the change to the entangle that occurred, probably not).
TelinArtho

08-08-05, 11:55 AM
@Prince FyreDragon - actually Entangled is a condition. Entangling Ectoplasm bestows the Entangled condition upon the recipient, not the spell Entangle. Being entangled does receive the penalties of the following:

An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls and a –4 penalty to Dexterity

However, you are right that it requires the ranged touch not the saving throw - so you might actually miss...

Hmm...I was not aware of that. I'm glad you mentioned it. That may be why my tactics are so daffy LOL. So we were both wrong and both right. Damn I hate parity LOL. But with this, the battle will probably need to be picked up from round 9, when Foremen went down, as you would have been able to Lay on Hands to bring him up (he was only at -2 at that point). But the Entangle was done with a touch attack....it should be a ranged touch, which it may have been, but it is listed in the battle log as a touch attack...so as long as that was a ranged touch it will still land.

@Vathelokai

Upon further inspection of the fight, it appears that you did the Ectoplasm correctly. It was my misunderstanding of the condition of entangle, not yours of the power. So I do apologize for that.

That was why I ask before I equiped them. In my RL campaign things like cold-iron arrows aren't common. So I equiped them per online-roller, because they weren't prepared to face a pixie. I said, I've never seen a monster to be equiped with cold iron arrows in my RL-campaign. But giving all the yuant-tis nets would have been an option which is pretty deadly expecially with possibility to drown the oponent in the pool. That would have been even more cheaper. But as I said, they did't know what their oponent is. So I gave them magic weapons and armor, a resistance-bonus and some online-rolled potions, to be as fair as possible to King Uther.

It's easy equipping Slaads. You just give them 1000gp potions.

I find it hard to equip monsters. Should I just have given the gnolls fighting Guts, potions of Enlarge and Bull's Strength? Wouldn't that be just preparing against him?

I prefer a randomly equipped monster. The gnolls only had 900 gp a piece, so potions make sense.

Also, the fight between Guts and the gnolls is here. (http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6880109&postcount=183)

Comments on said fight: The gnolls don't have anything close to handle animal, and the hyenas aren't exactly trained. I just assumed that the hyenas would take orders from the gnolls, but won't attack odd creatures.

Maybe we should make pre-set packages at each ECL from 3 to 10? That way, they come geared with a wide variety of items useable against a multitude of gladiators.

This might not be a real solution, but i think the Pitlord should equip the monsters to give them the most fair chance as possible including specific pieces of equipment.

Also, here's a cool suggestion. If a monster wins vs a gladiator, he should go in the roster next week until he is defeated. He would get the same gold for winning as a gladiator does and can re-equip himself.

Equipment packages are not going to work. We would have to distinguish by league, by type of creature, by amount of wealth, and other things. That's like making equipment packages for gladiators.

I don't think it should be hard to equip a monster. What you can do is to think of the monster as yours before you look at the character's sheet, then equip it. Better to give it better equipment than crap. After all, monster fights shouldn't be free wins.

You burn your life force to strengthen your powers.
Benefit

While manifesting a power, you can increase your effective manifester level by one, but in so doing you take 1d8 points of damage. At 8th level, you can choose to increase your effective manifester level by two, but you take 3d8 points of damage. At 15th level, you can increase your effective manifester level by three, but you take 5d8 points of damage.

The effective increase in manifester level increases the number of power points you can expend on a single power manifestation, as well as increasing all manifester level-dependent effects, such as range, duration, and overcoming power resistance.
Normal

I agree with Cat. There is no need for premade monsters. Just spend the money with a degree of thought and it will be fine.

Gnolls - strong brutes who melee. MW battleaxe, a few potions CLW, chain shirt, perhaps mighty bow or bull's strength potion.

I think what Luni did was very fair, but I want to know what the gnolls are going to do with a fox's cunning potion  and undetectable alignment :evillaugh.

AS for the Yuan-ti, they probably wouldn't have nets unless they took exotic weapon profeciency. I do think how they were equipped was fine (though the potions seem too random, as a Yuan-ti I'd take eagles' splendor not owl's wisdom because my spell-like abilities are charisma based) with the exception of not having a golf-bag of weapons to deal with the variety of threats gladiators face at that ECL. Pittbull plays in a RL campagin where cold-iron is rare but if we keep in mind this isn't RL but gladius where I can buy headbands of +1 things should really be fine.

The -2 comes from moving on a horse with mounted archery. Dive needs not be in a straight line. It's just downward movement.

The AC King Uther listed on his sheet is wrong. He has +8 armor (+1 fullplate) and +1dex, then -1dex and -1size from expansion = Ac17.

As for the dive, ok, but there was no need for a charge. A single downward move was 120ft which was more than enough.

Unless what you intended to type above is wrong, then your AC calculation is in error. +1 full plate would give you +9 armor (8 plate + 1 armor enhancement) + 1 dex for a total of 10 and then - 1 dex and - 1 size from expansion, leaving a final AC of 18.

However, he should only get 60' single move though right? That's what fly gives you. He could get a 240' dive because it says you can dive while running. 60' x 4 = 240'. Does heavy armor reduce you fly speed? If it does he would only get 40'.

KerlanRayne

Flying rules recap. http://d20srd.org/srd/movement.htm#tacticalAerialMovement

A flying creature can fly at twice its movement speed downwards, but only half its movement speed upwards (full speed with perfect maneuverability.) You can double, triple or quadruple move.

Also, a creature cannot fly if it has medium or higher load.

Fly: A creature with a fly speed can move through the air at the indicated speed if carrying no more than a light load.

It's the only reference I can find in the SRD about flying and encumbrance, but it was the same way in 3.0 and there's plenty of references of creatures not being able to fly with medium or higher load in 3.0.

Now the fly spell uses its own set of flying rules, different from the usual flying rules. With the fly spell, your base fly speed is 60, and 40 if you're encumbered (medium load or higher, or medium armor or higher) and you cannot triple or quad move. From a cursory reading of the fight in question, it looks as if a fullplate wearing dude drank a fly potion, so his move was 40'. A dive is just an ordinary charge in 3d, if he was doing it downwards he could've moved (double move)x(moving downwards)x(40')=160'.

Sebastien Loisel
KerlanRayne

08-08-05, 04:33 PM
Yes I missed the part about flying down at double speed. He was trying to charge, but can't because of cover. I don't know if a single move of 80' would put him in range. If it does, then that's all I have to say about the fight.

If you have levels in more than one psionic class, you combine your power points from each class to make up your reserve. You can use these power points to manifest powers from any psionic class you have.

While you maintain a single reserve of power points from your class, race, and feat selections, you are still limited by the manifester level you have achieved with each power you know.

First, good job on your first fight! I've a question or two to start with:

If you'll note in my tactics I never stated to base him but set up a round so that I could run past him in one turn. Basing him allows him to withdraw, something he would not do unless based, giving him back the movement advantage. If he moved and fired, I could have Ran and T-Bagged him, which was the whole entire tactic...

Excerpt of Saya's Tactics:
Move out with Readied Action: Spiritual Weapon on sight. Then, in one turn, have Moto make a Full Movement past him so that the middle of his Run is 10’ away from Dunewalker, where I’ll throw a T-Bag. If I miss, use the Luck re-roll. If I miss again, try again with the second T-Bag.
In round 7 Moto only Ran partial movement (Medium Load Lt. Warhorse: 40' movement x4 = 160' or 32 squares), or did I mis something? Also, I cannot find where the movement penalties are for creatures larger than Medium to verify that it should only be 40' (never seen a chart except for Medium and Small creatures). Can anyone give me a link? I cannot find it in a book either, thanks :) One more thing; in round 6 he is more than 6' away from cover and cannot therefore Hide, allowing my action to interrupt his, and then I should still have intiative, where the way you have it, Dune actually should go first in the next round because my action occured after his, not before/during as a readied action would:

Round 6 & 7
Round 6: Dunewalker begins hunting Moto, moving slightly away to make sure he avoids charges. He attacks the unaware horse, and Saya cannot negate because she doesn’t see either. Hits.
Dunewalker Hide: 13 vs Saya Spot: 10, is not seen. Dunwalker attacks: 18 vs. Flatfooted Moto Hits. Damage: 8 Saya and moto see Dunewalker, and Saya’s action triggers. The weapon attacks. Hits. Init resets.SW attack: 23 vs. AC 17 + 4 hits. Damage: 2

Serious apologies, but I will be unable to run my fight tonight. Usually, Monday nights are the only nights I can run fights, but I have been called in to work tonight and will not be able to run it, as I also work tomorrow morning and evening, and it will never get done. If someone could take it I could send you tactics asap. I can use the Internet and remain on the sight to send tactics but there is no way I can run a fight at work. To much going on with open pages (maps, characters, tactics, etc.) and the like for quite an extended period of time; impossible.

I greatly appreciate any takers of my 4 person free-for-all!!!

If there are none it's ok, I'll try to get it done asap, but it may not get done before Wed. pairings. :weep:

@Vathelokai - it looks much better, but there is still an issue in round 14-15. In round 14, you used the roll for Valkin's save for the horse (fine), which means the horse dies. In round 15, I get a new save (and succeed), so I don't take the damage. However, in the summary, I'm listed at 4 hp... I should have all 27. So this is going to go on for a few rounds more I imagine...

The above seems contradictory, to me, fromThat particular sentence is referring to Power Points and their usage. Power Point totals for a multi-class character are made up of the total of all the classes, but usage of those points is limited to the ML related to a single power.

For example... Expansion is a Psychic Warrior only power so Guts can only spend 3 PPs when using it because his Psychic Warrior level is only 3.

LLMadCow weighed in on this issue last week or the week previous and stated quite plainly that Manifester Level stacks for different manifesting classes for everything EXCEPT augmenting powers.
Luni

08-08-05, 06:27 PM
You are confusing me Cerebus.

So, we have a Psion (1)/PsyWar (2). So, does this give him a Manifester Level of 3?

Psion powers
Vigor, Empty Mind, Energy Ray

Psywar powers
Expansion, Vigor

Does this mean that his Manifester Level for each power is?
Expansion [2]
Vigor [3]
Empty Mind, Energy Ray [1]

I'm just curious.

I'm just curious.LLMadCow made a post on this some time back that explains it far better than I can, but the board's search is always down and Google turns up nothing.

From what I understood in his explanation your Manifester Level for the purposes of augmenting a power is the ML of the class that has the power on the list. In the case of multiple classes having said power the MLs would not stack, you would choose which class to augment the power with (probably the one with more levels).

So in the above example your ML for purposes of augmenting would be:
Expansion [2]
Vigor [2]
Empty Mind, Energy Ray [1]

This limitation is only for the purposes of augmenting however...your ML would still be considered to be 3 for duration/range/etc.

LLMadCow explained this better than myself so if he could remember the post he put it in and put a link up for us that would help.

Edit: Found his post here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6665083&postcount=673). A few posts previous from this he has some additional info as well.

ok a 2 vs 2, this is what I am getting for the exp and gp count please help me if I am wrong.

Team1 Wins
Team2 looses

Team1 has two ECL's 3
Team2 has two ECL's 3

Team1 Total ECL 5
Team2 Total ECL 5

So team 1 gets 1500exp and 1600gp
and team 2 gets 500exp and 533gp

Now is this per gladiator or do I split this up?
Lets see, Team 1 has two 3rd levels, and Team 2 has 3rd levels, and one player on team 2 has a horse.

I'm reasonably certain that for Alexi and Shandar, they recieve 900 *1.25 = 1125 Xp/Gp for Amion and his horse, plus 900 Xp/Gp for Victor, for a total of 2125, which is cut in half for 1012.5 Xp and Gp.

For Team 2, things are a little more complicated. One possibility is that they get (300 +300) / 2 Xp/Gp for 300 each, and then Amion has his share cut down 25% to 225 because of his mount. The other possibility is that the 600 total is cut down and then divided in half for the two of them, which would either be 600 *.75 = 225 each. The other possibility is that the 25% gets cut in half because there are two of them, giving a net 12.5% adjustment, and a final total of 262.5 Xp/Gp each.
Multiplayer Fights: If you face more than one gladiator, you calculate xp and gold for each opponoment gladiator seperately, add the results together, and divide it by the number of allied gladiators you have.
However, I'm pretty sure this means it's the first one, giving Amion 225 Xp/Gp and Victor 300, while Shandar and Alexi each get 1012.5 Xp and Gp.

Oh, and feel free to use my numbers...

@Zerone,
The reason that I had you run up to base Dunewalker was that it was the only way you could be in a position to run past him the next round. It turned out that it was very very difficult to run past him while coming within 10'. I didn't see anywhere else to move to set up the run. The reason it was hard wasn't so much that you couldn't reach him, but that any time you could reach him, the point of half of your movement was quite far away (more than 50' even).

In round 7, Moto ran no further because he ran into Dunewalker. If you wanted to run further, you would have passed quite far from him, not within 10'.

At (-14,-23), Dunewalker still had cover. He then moved 5' further to (-13,-23). If for some reason I don't know about, that doesn't work, let me know. Also, even though your action occurred after Dunewalker attacked, it technically doesn't matter, I believe, and your initiative still resets to before his turn.

I'll welcome any more questions, I want to make sure it ends up right.

Oh ho... that is a good catch there, thank you. I don't think HArvester would get armor spikes without armor (But I can likely be shown wrong), but just in case, I will give Wraith the attack it can legitimately make as soon as Harvester grappled. Another correction is that Harvester has Imp unarmed strike, so his unarmed attack does lethal damage, not subdual.

Corrected. (Harvester succeeded in the Ride to allow Wraith to attack... Wraith hit, and the ensuing dmg knocked Ch'ch'ili out.)

I'll welcome any more questions, I want to make sure it ends up right.
Yes this message is a little pissy, but this happens in almost every single fight my characters are in! In the last few I let things go, but cannot anymore.

He moves 50' while taking an action (unless you base him in which case, he withdraws) and I move 160', Run. If I wasn't running around like a chicken with my head cut off the whole fight chasing him, I would have used cover and made him move to fire at me, then Ran past him and t-bagged him.

Dunewalker cannot hide unless within 6' of Cover, which he is not by his map location. See the Hide description.

Initiatives stay in the place that you act, so if Dune is action first and I interrupt his action; now I go first next round. Otherwise initiative always stays the same unless a character holds initiative.

I do not have time to check the fight for more errors/questions. However, since my basic tactic wasn't carried out, the rest of the fight doesn't matter, only the round I based him does. If that point doesn't get changed, then I don't care about the rest of the fight... except the fact that I ran around chasing him like a chicken with it's head cut off, and when he went behind cover I stood there and waited...? All I ask is that in the future my characters acts the same every round, and not chaotic.

This does not fall solely on Michael Noah's shoulders, but I cannot stand by the wayside anymore. Also, as a first fight Noah did well. Usually first fights are reseved for monster fights/mini-quests or simple 3rd level fights... but is not the case here. This also strikes me as strange...

I guess I'm not understanding what you mean. You think that the best way to get in a position to run past him is to get behind cover and then do it? I guess that could possibly work, but it isn't something that I could come up with unless you spelled it out.

Like I said, you do move 160', but in order to run past him, if, for instance, he is 50' away, not only must there be an unobstructed path to him, there must also be an unobstructed path 50' past him - because you have to throw the bag in the middle of the move. I didn't see any better way to set up that path.

If someone else could chime in on the cover thing, that would be cool - he did have cover, then he moved 5' - so I'm pretty sure that works.

Oma-Na is in a bad situation and he knows it. He succeeds in escaping the grapple, immediately moving to (22/7.) Opposed Grapple Check Yoriko 2+2BAB+3St+4Size+4Feat=15 vs Oma-Na 17+2BAB+4St+4Size=27 Oma-Na withdraws 110ft to (1,8.)
Just one problem here. Escaping from grapple is a standard action, meaning that Oma-Na cannot use a withdraw action, meaning that he will be a little closer and that Yoriko gets an attack of opportunity, which would be used to start another grapple, thereby dealing more damage. Since Oma-Na only has 4 hp remaining at this time, this could easily swing the course of the fight.

Of course, now I realize I need more javelins.

@McJarvis: Expierence for Ariel:

She brought in 2 of 1/3 CR allies: Total 2/3

Maximun CR of allies allowed: ECL 4 - 2 = CR 2

Therefore xp penalty is (2/3/2*25) or 8.33%

So, she would get 400 - 8.33% = 366.66 rounded to 367 xp.

Does the other fella get a bonus for her having allies? Does she get a bonus for him having an ally?

PS- Thanks for the xp calc. I think I got confused because of the half-giant aspect to the skellies. Didn't notice that the CR is just set at 1/3 for skellie with a base critter of 1 hd.

Enlarged and with my longspear, I threaten 15-20 feet away. For her to hit me, she would have to enter my reach. If you have a DMG, in the back is nice little diagrams showing size and reach.

Erm- I wasn't questioning whether he entered your reach. I was questioning whether this provokes an AoP:

Moving: Moving out of a threatened square usually provokes an attack of opportunity from the threatening opponent. There are two common methods of avoiding such an attack—the 5-foot-step and the withdraw action (see below).

Emphasis mine.

I think he provoked an AoP for leaving a threatened square, not for entering reach...

That was me, not Guardian Angel. I expected your reply on this by the way. I see no where that escaping a grapple takes an action. I spent 30 minutes reading rules and searching the SRD for clarification on that. In the end, I came to the decision that escaping a grapple does not cost an action.

Now, if you can show where that is the case then I'll be happy to rerun it. However, rather than flee, Oma-Na would have escaped & attacked with the chain (since that would be his only hope.)

The fight really was very close, a number of attacks missed or hit by 1 or 2 points.

Escape from Grapple: You can escape a grapple by winning an opposed grapple check in place of making an attack. You can make an Escape Artist check in place of your grapple check if you so desire, but this requires a standard action.
Cerebus13

@Altaris

This passage of the SRD may be relevant:
Escape from Grapple

You can escape a grapple by winning an opposed grapple check in place of making an attack. You can make an Escape Artist check in place of your grapple check if you so desire, but this requires a standard action. If more than one opponent is grappling you, your grapple check result has to beat all their individual check results to escape. (Opponents don’t have to try to hold you if they don’t want to.) If you escape, you finish the action by moving into any space adjacent to your opponent(s). Escaping a grapple with a grapple check is done in place of an attack. Substituting an Escape Artist check for a Grapple check when escaping is a standard action.
Mind Rogue

08-09-05, 08:05 PM
As McJarvis or others have stated, either Oma-Na has to break free by making an opposed grapple check in place of an attack, or he has to make an escape artist check (as a standard action). Since, for him, an attack constitutes a standard action, he must break out as a standard action. This leaves him adjacent to me with only a move action left, meaning he has no way to withdraw safely, since even if he takes a 5 ft step, he is still within my reach and my mercy, and a move action provokes an attack of opportunity. Given this, I'll attempt to grab him again, either with the AoO, or with my own attack on the following round.

Regarding Rebecca vs the 3-way

Not sure where it says in my tatics to cast grease, and colorspray before Summon Swarm or scorching ray. Just wondering why I casted spells that stun or slow down people on low hp casters. during the battle with the one perosn in the darkenss I could have casted Summon Swarm. The centipede one has tremor sense so darkness doesn;t matter. Note it goes after the closest being on the ground which would have been his pet which would not be able to attack me or take 3d6 twice. I think my tatics weren't used at all other then my buffing done. Also grease is a 10ft. square so he would have to make two reflex saves not just one.

If you could rerun this that would be great. I mean why would my char ready a scroll in her hand and not use it the whole battle?

You could have cast summon swarm, but it takes a whole round to cast.(so you would be in the middle of casting it while the horse was mauling you) Also, the darkness ended up not helping you much because of the horses scent ability.(he was coming down on you hard). Your tactics would have worked fine if either the horse was not present or you had found the other two gladiators already in combat: but unfortunately luck was not with you :( I assumed your character would, in that present situation, realize the horse was still trailing her and opt for incapacitating attacks.(The color spray was meant to knock out the horse, rather then C)

If you still disagree I could rerun it using the swarm, but i'm pretty sure the horses attack would disrupt your casting...(and I'm not sure what would be involved in re-running it this late in the week...)

EDIT: Thinking back on my actions, I'm probably in the wrong here. Regardless of what I thought the current situation required, I should have stuck with your tactics... :(

Double Edit: Reran the fight, but not all of it. When you started to cast summon swarm(instead of color spray), the horse mauled you(both disrupted you and killed you). I decided not to waste my own time after this since the horse being done with you quicker was just an advantage to the eventual winner anyway, so now the battle reads a bit funny...but it's more legit now then it was before.

Hey all, trying to learn about these thing called Psionics??? ???

First Question, If I were to take a Psionic Race such as the Dromites. Could I take Psionic Feats?

Second Question, If I were said Dromite and I used it's Energy-ray (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicPowersDtoF.html#energy-ray), would I be able to Augment it with the Bonus 1 power point that it gets because it is Psionic?

Third Question, Say I bought a Weapon, Deep Crystal Dagger and had a power point reserve of 2. Like how the Half-Gaint gets, My total Power Point reserve would be 2, useing the 1/3 rule can I not charge my Deep Crystal Dagger?

Forth Question, Could a Xeph Psion take the Wild Talent Feat and Psionic Talent Feat to gain +4 power points? Or becuase he is a Psionic Creature he can't take this feat?

Last Question, the Psionic Weapon feat says you charge your melee weapon. Now if I use that melee weapon as range. Such as throwing said dagger from above. Do I still get the +2d6 Dmg?

Thanks for your info on these. Just reading the SRD about Psionic's and all these questions loop holes came into mind :evillaugh

Please Reply I am going to post this in the Tavern and in the Psionic Part of WOTC.

Draconis is using a glaive. That gives her a reach of 2 squares. Ariel threatens 4 squares.

When she moves through square 4 to square 3 to to square 2 to reach me with her glaive, I get an AoO, because she left square 4. Ariel also gets a second one for her leaving square 3, but she has already used her AoO per round.

McJavris -

Fight seem pretty good except Draconis should still be alive after getting hit with the scorching ray. She needs to rage (as indicated by tactic) when charging Goran. Strength at that point is 28+4 bulls strength +4 rage =36 for a total modifer of 13. This means the lance does 6+5+19+19=49 vs. Goran and 3+5+19+19=46 vs Ariel.

Draconis HPs is 17 with rage, Heindal only did 16 damage so Draconis is still alive.

Nothing personal, but it is the Pitlords discretion on whether to correct some elements(particularly deviation in strategy). While I understand the annoyance of mistakes, please PM if you feel that strongly. A well-placed PM will get a 100% better reaction than a public post.

@McJarvis

I am sure schedule has a lot to do with when the fights come up, and mistakes are almost inevitable without a little proofreading(especially in an FFA). The only thing about comments is that without tone of voice represented you can come off as uncaring. Good fight, though.

OK. Need a rules clarification on 'keeping rolls' then. Do I keep the rolls in the same rounds, or in the same order of occurence?

As I said before, at this point, Oma-Na's only hope would be to try and trip/knockdown Yoriko. If I keep rolls in order of occurence, wouldn't the attack rolls stand, thus changing the fight but not the outcome?

EDIT #2: And it wasn't what you all posted. That wording really sucks. :( There's a sentence in the very first paragraph that talks about how 'some actions don't take place of an attack.' My tired eyes had missed the part in parentheses, which makes a big difference to interpretation.

Well, I don't know if I would call "Activate a magic item", "cast a spell", or "draw a light weapon" attacks. Since none of these necessarily have baleful effects, doing them, in and of themselves, does not constitute an attack and would not break the Invisbility or Sanctuary spells. If your spell happens to be a stilled magic missile things might be different, but these actions aren't in and of themselves, attacks. Thus, I would hardly treat the line on breaking a grapple to mean, "In place of the above attacks," since not all of the above actions are attacks. Instead, I read it as "In place of one of your attacks (much like a disarm or trip attempt), you may..."

Regardless, even if he could break free as a free action, allowing him to withdraw, breaking grapple puts him in a square adjacent to me, and as I recall, I am still Large, which gives me the benefit of a 10 ft reach. Since Withdrawing only protects you during the first square you leave, he will provoke an AoO during the second square, which can put him right back in my clutches.

I believe that, in general, you keep themed rolls if at all possible. This means that if you get to a point where Oma-Na can ready to hit Yoriko, then his attack should succeed, and she will be down and unconscious before she has a chance to do anything.

Also, sorry if I sounded a little harsh... I can understand about meetings and other scheduling stuff.

Same order of occurence for that given individual and that given mode. Thus if he originally attacked with a sword 10 times and a bow 10 times, but you rerun and he attacks with a sword 15 times; 11-15 sword attacks would be new rolls.

rolls are not kept in order rather 'thematic rolls" are kept.

for example if during combat B casts a spell at A who rolls a (1) on a will save. if the fight is changed the result of the roll will happen if the opportunity arises.

Revised fight between Oma-Na & Yoriko is here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6911013&postcount=211)

Mind Rogue, you'll notice my blurb in red about moving while prone. This is per your tactics. I had to go back and re-read them to be sure about the tripping from prone. If not for the -4 prone penalty, you would've succeed and probably won (getting a free follow up attack for another grapple.) However, per your own tactics, you said 'pull him down with me.'

Here's a question that I couldn't find an answer to: does the -4 penalty for being prone apply to opposed rolls for things like Grapple and Trip?

It does apply to the inital trip check (being a melee touch attack,) but what about the secondary ability checks? Since they are basically ability checks, does that technicality get around the prone penalty? Hrm... I will have to research.

In case there are any questions about it, all rolls are kept the same when they can be. But it is not specific, like a (1) on a Will save in round 7 can become a Fort save in round 15.

Cool, thanks for that Uther.

@Cat, that really should be added to the Pitlording FAQ.

About the -4 prone penalty & trips/grapples... Per the 3.5 FAQ, it does apply in opposed grapple checks (so that wouldn't have been appropriate anyway MR.) However, I didn't see anything about it applying to trip attempts.

but if you are later forced to take a will save for the same cause the roll is kept.

Lets say blindness; you would use the 1 you had previously rolled if the enemy later on managed to cast blindness on you but was prevented from doing so in the rerun earlier.

Attack 10+3St+2bab-4prone-1size=9 vs AC10=failure

I think there is a little math error here. I believe that 10 +3 +2 -4 -1 = 10 +(5) - (5) = 10, not 9, which is a hit. As for whether the penalty for being prone applies on my opposed roll to bring him down, I don't know but I doubt it since the penalty for being prone only applies to attack rolls and AC. Thus it would influence disarm, which is opposed attack rolls, but for trip, it only influences my ability to hit him.

Also, because Oma-Na's Escape-from-grapple is in place of attacking, he shouldn't be able to attack immediately afterwards and thus couldn't knock me prone in the first place.

EDIT: And curse the FAQ. Where does it say that you can't move normally while prone (besides for pg 12 of the FAQ)?
King Uther

@SoulLord

True. But if for whatever reason a different spell was cast first in the re-run, say Burning Hands, that spell would receive the (1), not the Blindness cast 47 rounds later. At least that is my interpretation on how to handle that.

Well don't I feel like a dork. :D Sorry about that, on both accounts. I just did a search on 'prone' and it brought up 30-something examples. The first one was about tumble & being prone.

@SoulLord

True. But if for whatever reason a different spell was cast first in the re-run, say Burning Hands, that spell would receive the (1), not the Blindness cast 47 rounds later. At least that is my interpretation on how to handle that.

It seems we might have to ask Caterane.

The thing is if you fail your save vs sleep on round 3
the fight is rerun and you have to save again vs sleep on round 4
the result of the first save should be used no matter if you had to cast a different spell on round 3 due to the rerun.

The way would have done your example is roll a new saving throw for burning hands and keep the result for blindness in case it shows up in the fight

I think for the most part I agree with you. The problem is that in some cases it becomes debatable.

True but there also another motivation.

Keep arguments to a minimum.

If all dice have to be rerolled or kept in the same order then it can encourage gladiators to grab at straws and look for the slightest thing that could change the rolls and thus pass a posible failed save or hit with a previously missed attack on the basis of different things.

If Gladiators know that they will fail that will save vs sleep they won't be so motivated to have pitlords rerun fights until they win.

I think a re-run should never be done unless the Pitlord completely disregarded everything written in the tactics. But as a Pitlord, I could see myself subbing out the save(Blindness for Burning Hands we'll say), then realizing X-gladiator had a chance to cast the original spell(burning hands) 15 rounds later. Well, the entire course of the fight would be different, since Y-gladiator was blind for 15 rounds.

What I am saying is that your original comment is correct, but that there are some cases in which doing so becomes problematic. Very very few, but some.

I would have to disagree with you on part of this. Reruns should be done anytime there are mistakes. Ignoring or not seeing something in someone's tactics is a second reason. I say this because in both of my fights last week, there were mistakes. And in both cases, the outcome changed based on the reruns from fixing those mistakes. I ended up losing both matches because of reruns, but I have no beefs with that because they were rerun to correct errors. Just so happened the dice didn't fall my way. But to have errors and not rerun a fight to fix those errors, no matter how small, seems very irresponsible on the part of any pitlord. Now, if you are able to fix the error in the context of the fight without it really changing anything, then by all means, do so. But errors, for the most part, should cause reruns from where they occurred.

Definitions are needed before you disagree.

Fixing a mistake is one thing. A re-run is starting the fight over from round 1.

Agreed that definitions are needed, however you are the first to use the term rerun as to mean starting over from round 1 (at least that I have seen). Most pitlords I have had contact with use it to mean rerunning everything in a fight that occurred after a mistake that was made that they are fixing. I think that is what SoulLord was referring to as well.

Oma-Na Vs Yoriko Revision #2 (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6911013&postcount=211)

I am deeply sorry about those mistakes in the first revision. (Note, NOT rerurn.) :D Silly mistakes made out of being in a hurry since I'm at work.

Revision #2 still doesn't change the winner, but this time it was the dice and not me! ;)

Please review for further errors. I know it is getting close to pairings and I want to be able to correct anything else I missed before then if at all possible.

But, I think this time it is all correct.

McJarvis, I'm thinking of retiring Murgatroyd, which is why I didn't say anything about the fight, but I think there are many problems with it.

1) On round 10 when Lothan makes a listen check, the DC to pinpoint me is (move silently)+20. Apparently my move silently was 9, so his DC to pinpoint was 29 and he rolled 18, far below what he needed to pinpoint. Since he only beat my move silently by 9, you were suppose to randomize his guess within 37 squares. http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6466576
2) Just moving through my square would not ensure that he "bumps into me" since you are allowed to let someone move through your square, which I would've done. http://d20srd.org/srd/combat/movementPositionAndDistance.htm#movingth roughaSquare
3) Round 12: again with the listen check essentially pinpointing me.
4) Round 13: Again with the bumping into me.
5) Round 13: did you roll his 50% miss chance?
6) At the end, you forgot to say I used a potion of invisibility.

Curses. Of all the times to roll a '3'. Oh well. It was close, but the dice just didn't seem to like me when it counted.

If there are any other comments/concerns about my fights...erm...I'm leaving for a week without internet access now. I don't mind if Cat rules they need to be changed: but I won't be able to do it for a week.

AHH! Minor arithematic error in last round of FFA that makes a big difference.
