| TelinArtho08-30-06, 04:11 PM | Fights of the Week: August 30th Sheets Deadline for editing characters sheets is 21:00 CET. Central European Time (http://wwp.centraleuropeantime.eu/) shows the time. Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match. Currently, the deadline has already passed. Rules of Gladius All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius. It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions part 1 and part 2. Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders. Pairings GM Caterane will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline. Make sure that your character is not in Prison (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=571107&goto=lastpost). Pitlording You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight. If you need, there is a nice Template ready to use that will help. You could find very useful the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps, You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete. Other useful links are Skills and Feats, Quick Access tables for XP and Gold. Recent News and Developments There have been several additions and modifications to the new Guild rules. Check the Council of Gladius thread for more information! Also being debated are the rules and allowances for diplomacy and Leadership allies, with strong points on both sides of the discussion. Comments & Concerns Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread. Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, don't attack pitlords. Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play and above all, have FUN! If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius! |
| Stormwind08-30-06, 04:27 PM | @Sauro: Miniquest for Raskos up here. @NiQil: Miniquest for Vasi up here. |
| TelinArtho08-30-06, 05:22 PM | Burglary results have been sent to Zevox and ayyin... |
| Pitlords08-30-06, 05:22 PM | There are two ECL 3 fights left to take. Anyone interested? Tweak (Vathelokai) vs. Igg Scalari (NiQil) : XXXXX [Forest] Ventr the Dreamer (Milov) vs. Geoffrey (Dr.Funk) : XXXXX [Cavern] Credit Changes: +10: Caterane +9: Uther +5: Vathelokai +4: DSugui, Erithmu, Zevox +3: Stormwind +2: Ayyini, Sauro +1: Abyssal, hogarth, Iced, McJarvis, UserName, Zelck, MWB -1: Telin -2: NiQil |
| TelinArtho08-30-06, 05:32 PM | Go ahead and send one or both my way Cat. Since when did I get designated "Guild Pitlord" duty? :) Oh - and my tactics will probably be sent sometime tonight or tomorrow morning. @all fighters in my fights - I've got 4 fights so far and I might be picking up another 1 or 2. Do the math - get your tactics in early. |
| Zelck08-30-06, 05:35 PM | I'm willing to do one as well. EDIT: As in take one of those extra fights. |
| TelinArtho08-30-06, 05:48 PM | @Zevox - managed to get Darrgon's tactics done. Sent via PM. The rest will be later on tonight or tomorrow morning. |
| Sindorin08-30-06, 06:10 PM | How come Frozen Characters' power ratings are not affected when they do Guild battles? Just curious, there is probably a valid reason like the items being refunded part, etc. Thanks (hehe i'm scraping the barrel for that blue GR tag) |
| Caterane08-30-06, 06:41 PM | @Telin: Because you're absolutely reliable ;) @Zelck: Assigned you one of the fights @Steve: Because the expendables are refunded. You could buy dust of disappearance and use it all the time without losing the money to improve your PR. |
| Sindorin08-30-06, 07:06 PM | Yeah that's what I figured. Thanks! |
| MindWandererB08-30-06, 07:28 PM | @Uther and Ayyini: Tactics have been sent. Have fun. |
| Erithmu08-30-06, 09:04 PM | Niqil goes Here. Iced goes Here. and away we go ....... |
| hogarth08-30-06, 09:13 PM | @Ayyini: tactics have been sent for Kilpquabjeg |
| TheMagister08-30-06, 10:05 PM | @Iced - tactics for Mssr. Hood sent via PM. Might send an addendum later. Usually get an idea after awhile. TM |
| hogarth08-30-06, 10:12 PM | @Zevox: tactics sent for Reginald Molehusband |
| NiQil08-30-06, 10:33 PM | @ TelinArtho: Tactics for Igg Scalari sent via PM @ Zevox: Tactics for Ook Scalari sent via PM |

| Zelck08-30-06, 10:37 PM | @Abyssal: Tactics for Andurwin sent. @bgt: Tactics received. |
| Zevox08-30-06, 10:55 PM | @ Telin - Tactics recieved, looks good. Burglary also recieved, and I'm somehow not bothered by it ;) . @ hogarth - Tactics recieved, big problem PMed addressed. @ NiQil - Tactics recieved, looks good. @ My Pitlords - I'll definitely have tactics for Ceilia away tonight, but the others are questionable. Asran won't be until tomorrow for sure (want to make sure I don't miss a thing on that one). Zevox |
| Zevox08-31-06, 12:00 AM | @ ayyiniwindryder - Tactics for Ceilia Durrol (vs Ilendil Oratith) have been PMed. Enjoy that one. P.S. Your name is damn hard to type correctly - Cat even got it wrong in the pairings post. @ Telin - I never noticed before, but Ilendil is eerily reminiscent of my Featylec, just with straight rogue levels instead of fighter and ranger ones... and a lower fortitude save but higher will save (heh, Featylec won't have a will save that high for a good long time). Zevox |
| King Uther08-31-06, 01:10 AM | @Caterane/Anyone If you need I will pick up some fights. Hopefully I can resrve some time to work on some beautiful map plans I have. |
| Iced08-31-06, 01:50 AM | @KU - Where do you find the pictures you use for your characters and what mapper do you use for the Achos campaign? |
| lonewolf08-31-06, 02:30 AM | @Dsgui: Kittys tactic sent. |
| Usurpator08-31-06, 08:55 AM | Question about the Forest Map: It seems the water is 5 ft. deep. When exactly does it require a swim check? For all creatures, medium-size and smaller creatures? A Colossal creature would only wet its toes, and I think it is perfectly feasible for a warhorse to wade across water that is 5 ft. (chest-high) to humans. In any case, it seems weird to have horses skip across the stones. |
| Traevanon08-31-06, 08:57 AM | @Telin: Tactics for Khabil sent. |
| hogarth08-31-06, 09:02 AM | Question about the Forest Map: It seems the water is 5 ft. The last forest fight I saw, the pitlord treated it as 4 squares of movement for a horse (like a deep bog). That seemed quite reasonable to me. |
| Usurpator08-31-06, 09:19 AM | The last forest fight I saw, the pitlord treated it as 4 squares of movement for a horse (like a deep bog). That seemed quite reasonable to me. That seems reasonable to me too. |
| Usurpator08-31-06, 10:23 AM | Other map question, this time concerning the sewer map: The Grates: The four grates block the path of the sewer tunnels. However, the 5 bars are slightly bent so that there are ways to get through: * Squeeze: A small character can squeeze through. A medium character needs a Dc20 Escape Artist check while larger creatures cannot squeeze through in that way. Now from the SRD, Escape Artist skill Action: Making an Escape Artist check to escape from rope bindings, manacles, or other restraints (except a grappler) requires 1 minute of work. Escaping from a net or an animate rope, command plants, control plants, or entangle spell is a full-round action. Escaping from a grapple or pin is a standard action. Squeezing through a tight space takes at least 1 minute, maybe longer, depending on how long the space is. Since it costs 10 rounds to squeeze through the grates with the current rules, this is really not a feasible option during arena combat. I cannot imagine this was intended by the map maker. How much time does squeezing though the grates cost? Is it free (part of a move action), is it a move action, standard action, what? |
| Pittbull08-31-06, 10:30 AM | I guess, it's a part of a move-action. |
| NiQil08-31-06, 10:44 AM | Other map question, this time concerning the sewer map: Now from the SRD, Escape Artist skill Since it costs 10 rounds to squeeze through the grates with the current rules, this is really not a feasible option during arena combat. I cannot imagine this was intended by the map maker. How much time does squeezing though the grates cost? Is it free (part of a move action), is it a move action, standard action, what? I'm curious as to why you would think that we would not use rules that are already in place here. The RAW is clear on what is required for the situation...why would we deviate from that? If this is not what was intended, then the map should be altered accordingly. As it stands, I see no reason to not use the rules that are already written for this situation. |
| waywreth08-31-06, 01:06 PM | @Erithmu - Tactics for Gaston in Gaston vs. Saffron sent via PM. |
| TelinArtho08-31-06, 01:11 PM | @ Telin - Tactics recieved, looks good. Burglary also recieved, and I'm somehow not bothered by it ;) . Yeah yeah - I know... thieves just don't get any love... @ Telin - I never noticed before, but Ilendil is eerily reminiscent of my Featylec, just with straight rogue levels instead of fighter and ranger ones... and a lower fortitude save but higher will save (heh, Featylec won't have a will save that high for a good long time). Never even looked at the character, but it isn't all that surprising. Most of the builds I make are pretty straightforward (Nycalik, Aquin and Blaergh aside anyway). I had been tossing around how to make a regular thief for a while - but since I internally try to stay away from psionics, it cuts down my options a fair amount. With the burglary rules, I have found a little more success though... Just probably not this week... |
| Sunwolf08-31-06, 02:33 PM | @Telin Tactics for Leif sent by PM |
| TelinArtho08-31-06, 02:49 PM | Tactics sent to Abyssal Stalker for review for Undertaker and Anakala vs Tezca Tactics sent to Dsugui for Kraegin Tactics sent to Ayyin... for Ilendil Tactics sent to Hogarth for Farig Tactics sent to Zevox for Faleto (and already confirmed for Darrgon) Tactics received for Igg Scalari, Karen, Tweak, Khabil, and Leif. Still waiting on: Va'ria (Sindorin), Daisy (DSugui*2), Loddick (Erithmu), Archdevil Asran (Zevox), Sali Kan (ayyin...) and Ihdald (Milov). Looks like I've got enough tactics to run one fight right now, so I'll see if I can get it done this afternoon. EDIT - Okay - Archdevil Asran's tactics received too. Mmmm... 3pm - time for lunch. |
| Zevox08-31-06, 02:54 PM | Yeah yeah - I know... thieves just don't get any love... Eh, its more so because Ceilia just isn't expendable-dependant that it doesn't bother me. I'd actually be more bothered if you'd taken the shield of faith scroll, rather than the entropic shield and bless ones. Still waiting on: ... Archdevil Asran (Zevox) And speaking of the (arch)devil, tactics for him sent. Thats going to be one brutal match, one way or the other. I look forward to seeing it. Zevox |
| Milov08-31-06, 03:59 PM | @ Telin: Ihdald's Tactics=sent. @ Zelck: Ventr's tactics=sent. |
| TheMagister08-31-06, 04:01 PM | @Zevox - tactics for Rubicanti vs. Ook Scalari sent via PM. Hope you can swim, dwarf. Heh. TM |
| Zevox08-31-06, 04:06 PM | @ hogarth - You already noticed, but tactics for Istima (=> Farig => Krug) PMed. Heres hoping that goes better than the last FFA Istima had with one of Telin's characters. @ TM - Tactics recieved, thank you. @ Username - Tactics recieved, slight issue PMed. Zevox |
| TheMagister08-31-06, 04:09 PM | No questions about the tactics? My understanding of the rules meshes with how you'd pitlord it? |
| NiQil08-31-06, 04:15 PM | @Zevox - tactics for Rubicanti vs. Ook Scalari sent via PM. Hope you can swim, dwarf. Heh. TM Heh...I think you failed your Knowledge (Tactics) check. No reason for me to be near the water, and no reasonable way to get me there forcefully. You're short on some grapple points, and low on strength. And dwarves live to be bull-rushed. Let me know how that ground feels that you will be tasting after I trip you so bad you fall into the Underdark. :P |
| Erithmu08-31-06, 04:20 PM | @Waywreth: Gaston's tactics received @Dsugui: Tactics for Ignatius sent @Niqil: Thank you |
| NiQil08-31-06, 04:24 PM | You're welcome |
| Zevox08-31-06, 04:25 PM | No questions about the tactics? My understanding of the rules meshes with how you'd pitlord it? Haven't gotten to yours yet. Still have one more character of my own to write tactics for. Edit: Since you asked, I looked at them. Looking over the rules you want to use, they seem AOK to me. Good luck pulling it off though. Zevox |
| Vathelokai08-31-06, 04:37 PM | I'm curious as to why you would think that we would not use rules that are already in place here. The RAW is clear on what is required for the situation...why would we deviate from that? If this is not what was intended, then the map should be altered accordingly. As it stands, I see no reason to not use the rules that are already written for this situation. Because when Cat proposed the map he made a bunch of 'simplifications' that deviated from RAW. I remember some debate on it. @pitlordys: Some tactics sent, but Denshi vs Harverster and Saffron vs. Gaston will be sent tomorrow. Those require a bit more thought. |
| MindWandererB08-31-06, 04:48 PM | Because when Cat proposed the map he made a bunch of 'simplifications' that deviated from RAW. I remember some debate on it.Nearly all of which ended up in favor of the RAW rather than the house rules. I think only the tree sizes and the Balance checks for rooftops remained at odds with the RAW. |
| DSugui08-31-06, 05:15 PM | @hogarth: tactics for Krug sent by PM @Telin: tactics for Daisy vs Karen sent by PM. Tactics for the other fight still being discussed. @Erithmu: Tactics for Ignatius received @Telin: Tactics for Kraegin received @lonewolf: Tactics for Kitty received @bgt: Tactics for Neidr recevied |
| hogarth08-31-06, 05:21 PM | @DSugui, Zevox, TelinArtho - tactics all received. Hopefully I'll have (the first revision of) the fight posted by tomorrow night. @Zevox - tactics sent for Treetall |
| Erithmu08-31-06, 05:32 PM | @Zevox: Tactics for Shadowsong are off @Telin: Dsugui and I are in the last stages of working out the details. |
| Zevox08-31-06, 05:57 PM | @ Telin/hogarth/Erithmu - All tactics for your fight recieved. @ DSugui - Tactics for Destra Stormwind (vs Neidr vs Kitty) have been PMed. Zevox |
| TelinArtho08-31-06, 07:11 PM | Igg Scalari (NiQil) vs Tweak (Vathelokai) is up. Wow - look at all the crits... |
| NiQil08-31-06, 08:17 PM | Igg Scalari (NiQil) vs Tweak (Vathelokai) is up. Wow - look at all the crits... Damn...for once the dice liked me....but I think Igg used up enough luck for all of level 4 in this one fight.... |
| King Uther08-31-06, 11:48 PM | Tactics for Dronnar vs Sunstroke received. Fight will be run this weekend. |
| Ravashack08-31-06, 11:51 PM | OK, tactics for Perius in the Hunter fight sent in to DSugui via PM. |
| Sindorin09-01-06, 12:51 AM | Tactics for Seaendithas and Va'ria have been sent to McJarvis and TelinArtho respectively. |
| NedTheDestroyer09-01-06, 01:45 AM | @UserName - Sent tactics for R'y (Ray) vs. Zodiac. I have to work untill the deadline tomorow so if you have any questions i'll have to fix them at that time. It sucks. At least my internship is almost done. |
| Vathelokai09-01-06, 04:47 AM | Igg Scalari (NiQil) vs Tweak (Vathelokai) is up. Wow - look at all the crits... Good fight. Tweak actually lasted a bit longer than I expected. Should be a bit more careful about falling out of trees:D |
| Stormwind09-01-06, 08:49 AM | Good fight. Tweak actually lasted a bit longer than I expected. Should be a bit more careful about falling out of trees:D If Tweak is going to make a habit of falling out of trees then perhaps you want to think about a ring of featherfall ... |
| Vathelokai09-01-06, 10:20 AM | If Tweak is going to make a habit of falling out of trees then perhaps you want to think about a ring of featherfall ... Trying to decide between that and slippers of spiderclimb. I'm researching alternating between run and climb before taking it to the elders thread. I think she needs some practice not taking 35 pts of damage from crits first. @Sauro: Tactics for Denshi vs. Harv sent. for the first time, I have maxed the character limit on a tactics pm. @Rith; my appologies, but the tacits for Saffron vs. Gaston are delayed yet again. Trying to hurry. |
| ayyiniwindryder09-01-06, 10:44 AM | @Abyssal Stalker - Ivan tactics sent @TelinArtho - Sali tactics sent @hogarth, MondwarriorB, Zevox, TelinArtho - Tactics received. I'm gonna be out of town Sat/Sun, so fights probably wont be up until late Sun or Mon. |
| Zelck09-01-06, 10:47 AM | I still have not received Geoffrey's tactics. Please get them to me ASAP, Dr. Funk. |
| McJarvis09-01-06, 10:57 AM | @ Sindorin: Tactics received. still no tactics from Dr. Funk. Also don't have confirmation that I'm handling the Ventr the Dreamer (Milov) vs. Geoffrey (Dr.Funk) : XXXXX [Cavern] fight. EDIT: Or is Zelck doing this one? <--confused He can do it if he wants...I was just trying to help out :-) |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 11:08 AM | I'll be seeing Dr. Funk later today - I'll remind him to send tactics once he gets out of school (in about 3-4 hours) |
| Zelck09-01-06, 11:10 AM | @ Sindorin: Tactics received. still no tactics from Dr. Funk. Also don't have confirmation that I'm handling the Ventr the Dreamer (Milov) vs. Geoffrey (Dr.Funk) : XXXXX [Cavern] fight. EDIT: Or is Zelck doing this one? <--confused He can do it if he wants...I was just trying to help out :-) I've been assigned that one :P |
| McJarvis09-01-06, 11:33 AM | I've been assigned that one :P The ???'s confused me :( |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 11:39 AM | Here's the current state of tactics I have received (items in bold have not been received): Sali Kan (ayyiniwindryder) vs. Khabil (Traevanon) vs. Ihdald (Milov) : TelinArtho [City] [All vs All] Tweak (Vathelokai) vs. Igg Scalari (NiQil) : TelinArtho [Forest] -- DONE! Karen Douglas (Lonewolf) intercepts Little Daisy[7] (DSugui) : TelinArtho [Sewer] [Guild] [Week 2] Daisy (DSugui) [ECL7] & Loddick (Erithmu) [ECL6] intercept Archdevil Asran (Zevox) : TelinArtho [Cavern] [Guild] Va'ria Theladrais (Sindorin) intercepts Leif Goldeneye (Sunwolf) : TelinArtho [Plains] [Guild] Karen vs Daisy will be next to run since that is on week 2 and because I have received their tactics the earliest. |
| McJarvis09-01-06, 11:56 AM | @ Iced Confering with my partner on our tactics still, sorry for the delay. If he doesn't PM me back by the deadline I'll send you what we have so far.((I'm just confirming that he has nothing else to add)) |
| Erithmu09-01-06, 11:58 AM | @Telin: Forwarding Loddick + Daisy now, I sent to Dsugui to send them, but he must have logged off before he could send them. |
| McJarvis09-01-06, 01:46 PM | @Iced: Tactics for Mort and Monch sent. Team m&ms charge! ;) |
| Usurpator09-01-06, 05:10 PM | @King Uther: tactics for the lone Tezca against the Anakala/Undertaker/allies team sent. |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 05:25 PM | Karen Douglas (lonewolf) vs Little Daisy (DSugui)7 [Guild Interception] is up. Couple of key rolls decided this one. |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 05:32 PM | Sali Kan (ayyiniwindryder) vs. Khabil (Traevanon) vs. Ihdald (Milov) : TelinArtho [City] [All vs All] Tweak (Vathelokai) vs. Igg Scalari (NiQil) : TelinArtho [Forest] -- DONE! Karen Douglas (Lonewolf) intercepts Little Daisy[7] (DSugui) : TelinArtho [Sewer] [Guild] [Week 2] --DONE! Daisy (DSugui) [ECL7] & Loddick (Erithmu) [ECL6] intercept Archdevil Asran (Zevox) : TelinArtho [Cavern] [Guild] Va'ria Theladrais (Sindorin) intercepts Leif Goldeneye (Sunwolf) : TelinArtho [Plains] [Guild] So - all tactics have been received. I may or may not have questions on them (they have not all been read...), but at least I have them. I will do the remaining 2 guild fights first - probably starting with Va'ria vs Leif as that looks like it will be a lot of fun... |
| Erithmu09-01-06, 05:36 PM | Karen Douglas (lonewolf) vs Little Daisy (DSugui)7 [Guild Interception] is up. Couple of key rolls decided this one. I'm not commenting on the fight but rather the rewards: While I know that Cat said that there was no penalty to the gladiator for the fight. I think it should be treated as if Bobo counts as a gladiator for multiple reasons 1: Daisy gets all the XP for a fight where she was not really alone and had some footing. Treat Bobo as an ECL 7 gladiator that takes half the rewards 2: Karen gets XP for fighting against and EL 7 encounter, when it wasn't. I just think if the free gladiator is allowed that it should be treated as a team fight with the merc as part of the team, and part of the EL of the team. |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 05:40 PM | Well, unless I get input from Cat on the matter - I can't really make that kind of change. I will PM him to take some consideration on the matter though. |
| Erithmu09-01-06, 05:44 PM | Understandable. I don't think it is much of a stretch to make that leap: Daisy gained 4200xp before reductions. normal ECL 7 even fight winner 2100xp before reductions. |
| lonewolf09-01-06, 06:18 PM | In round 7 when Thranduil tries to grapple Little Daisy you rolled AoO for Athena&Artemis, but initiating a grapple only draws an AoO from the target of the grapple. I believe this might have a big effect on the fight. |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 06:23 PM | Hmmm - a very valid point. Give me a moment please to review and edit (if necessary). Feel free to bring up other issues if you see them. EDIT - Okay - the initial touch fails, but on the following round the pegasus succeeds. However, since the pegasus can't move into Little Daisy's space (because of Artemis and Athena) - the pegasus has to let go. Even if the pegasus could move in - the movement would create the two AoO situations, which would return Thranduil down to 2hp and force him to withdraw - per your tactics. The net is that Little Daisy might be held for one round at the expense of possibly killing your Pegasus. If you want me to proceed, let me know. |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 06:47 PM | What is the Reflex save for a Phantom Steed? Is it based on the CL? Is it based on some kind of a horse? Basically, I need to know if the steed survives an opening round fireball... Can't proceed without it. |
| MindWandererB09-01-06, 06:52 PM | What is the Reflex save for a Phantom Steed? Is it based on the CL? Is it based on some kind of a horse? Basically, I need to know if the steed survives an opening round fireball... Can't proceed without it. Since it basically has no hit dice, I would give it a +5 Reflex save (equal to its Dex modifier). An alternative would be to treat it like an Unseen Servant which automatically fails all saves. Of course, this is 100% judgment on my part; I could see being more generous, as well--since normal horses have good Reflex saves, it could possibly have a base save as high as 2+1/2 caster's HD (+7 in this case, total +12). I don't think there's a "real" answer. |
| lonewolf09-01-06, 06:58 PM | Yes please proceed with the change. Also with gaining Full Cover from Daisy I obviously meant breaking LOS which is entirely possible with speed 40 and Spring attack. I wrote in my tactics to do full attacks while Bobo is brain locked, so the first spring attack should be in round 11. This would force an AoO from Athena which would miss keeping the thematically rolls because of Karens Mobility. EDIT: And while it doesnt really matter, I dont understand why you have Karen put the pearl away in round 3 only to draw it again in round 5. |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 06:58 PM | Well, it really is just a matter of whether it has one or not. If it has as much as a +1 - it would make the save. I'll leave it for later tonight and think on it. If someone finds something more concrete in the meantime, let me know. |
| Erithmu09-01-06, 07:02 PM | Telin: 2 options: if the fireball does 34 points it doesn't matter as it will kill the horse either way. Cat has it listed on Uhme as a +8 (3 base + 5 dex) Basically any 3 HD horse. I probably would end up in the 8 or 5 camp. |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 07:05 PM | @Lonewolf - Just so you know - I generally keep "thematic" attack rolls in their own silos - so an AoO would be reserved for the next AoO not just the next attack. Looking at round 11, you full attack, which isn't enough to take down Bobo. Instead, you want to spring attack. However, its not really a spring since you wouldn't move first, attack and move again. Regardless, you can attack, then move - suffering an AoO from the dog. I'll see if I can get some time to work on this tonight. |
| TelinArtho09-01-06, 07:06 PM | @Erithmu - nah - its that nasty 30 damage Fireball... all or nothing... |
| lonewolf09-01-06, 07:12 PM | While it doesnt make any difference in this case, there is indeed an important reason to use the spring attack Feat even if only moving after attacking: You dont suffer an AoO from the attacked character for the movement. |
| SauroGrenom09-01-06, 07:15 PM | I've got tactics from Cat and Vath. I'll get working on the fight probably monday night. |
| MindWandererB09-01-06, 08:04 PM | While it doesnt make any difference in this case, there is indeed an important reason to use the spring attack Feat even if only moving after attacking: You dont suffer an AoO from the attacked character for the movement. To use Spring Attack, you absolutely have to move before attacking. However, you can run in a little circle, or side-to-side, and have it still count--but such movement will provoke an AoO from opponents other than your target. |
| Zevox09-01-06, 08:38 PM | @ hogarth - I see the hunter fight is up. Looks good, but two notes that don't affect the fight: Energy Push does not require an attack. It automatically hits. And concentration checks to manifest/cast while double moving are only DC 10 + power level. Its running thats DC 15 + power level. Otherwise everything seems fine to me. Thanks for running it! | hogarth09-01-06, 08:47 PM | @ hogarth - I see the hunter fight is up. Looks good, but two notes that don't affect the fight: Energy Push does not require an attack. It automatically hits. No, it's a ray. Energy Push Psychokinetic [see text] Level: Psion/wilder 2 Display: Auditory and visual Manifesting Time: 1 standard action Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./ level) Effect: Ray And concentration checks to manifest/cast while double moving are only DC 10 + power level. Its running thats DC 15 + power level. I believe the only concentration checks I made for you were for manifesting defensively (which is DC 15+power level). You auto-passed the manifest while double-moving. The problem is that I had you manifest defensively + single move on two occasions, which I admit was against your tactics. In the end it didn't matter so I didn't bother going back and changing things. EDIT: On an unrelated note, I'm having a lot of difficulty with the "Battles of Gladius" thread; I keep getting a blank page when I try to open it up. That's why I haven't linked to the fight yet. |
| Zevox09-01-06, 08:52 PM | No, it's a ray. That doesn't mean its a ranged touch attack. The power description says nothing about making such, and the description of rays simply says that they typically are, not always. I believe the only concentration checks I made for you were for manifesting defensively (which is DC 15+power level). Ah, sorry, I thought when I first read it that the round 8 check was for double moving, but I see now it was manifesting defensively. My mistake. Edit: EDIT: On an unrelated note, I'm having a lot of difficulty with the "Battles of Gladius" thread; I keep getting a blank page when I try to open it up. That's why I haven't linked to the fight yet. Ah. Link would be here. Zevox |
| Erithmu09-01-06, 08:54 PM | That doesn't mean its a ranged touch attack. The power description says nothing about making such, and the description of rays simply says that they typically are, not always. Zevox Ray: Some effects are rays. You aim a ray as if using a ranged weapon, though typically you make a ranged touch attack rather than a normal ranged attack. As with a ranged weapon, you can fire into the dark or at an invisible creature and hope you hit something. You don’t have to see the creature you’re trying to hit, as you do with a targeted power. Intervening creatures and obstacles, however, can block your line of sight or provide cover for the creature you’re aiming at. If a ray power has a duration, it’s the duration of the effect that the ray causes, not the length of time the ray itself persists. If a ray power deals damage, you can score a critical hit just as if it were a weapon. A ray power threatens a critical hit on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a successful critical hit. yea it does ... |
| hogarth09-01-06, 08:57 PM | That doesn't mean its a ranged touch attack. The power description says nothing about making such, and the description of rays simply says that they typically are, not always. That's not how I read it: Ray Some effects are rays. You aim a ray as if using a ranged weapon, though typically you make a ranged touch attack rather than a normal ranged attack. To me, that means that typically you make a ranged touch attack, but sometimes you make a normal ranged attack. That's backed up by this, too: If a ray power deals damage, you can score a critical hit just as if it were a weapon. A ray power threatens a critical hit on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a successful critical hit. How can you get a critical hit if you don't make an attack roll? If you can show me a ruling otherwise, I'd be glad to take a look. |
| MindWandererB09-01-06, 08:57 PM | To clarify: it says that rays are always ranged attacks. The "typically" refers only to ranged touch attacks, so presumably a ray that required a normal ranged attack would be possible. I don't think any actually exist, though. Edit: Hogarth and I are on the same track. |
| Zevox09-01-06, 08:57 PM | yea it does ... Ah, I see. I mistook the note that its typically a touch attack as opposed to a normal ranged attack for meaning that its typically an attack at all. Again then, my mistake. Zevox |

| DSugui09-01-06, 11:03 PM | @Telin: I confess I didn't understand your map, so if this sounds silly, forgive me. While I agree Bobo would go straight to Karen, the hippogriffs would attack the pegasus as per my tactics. I don't know if it makes any difference, but it could be an issue if the grappling pegasus gets hold of Daisy and everything... @hogarth: The fight seems ok by me. Can't argue with the dice gods... |
| King Uther09-02-06, 01:24 AM | Tezca vs everyone else tactics received. Fight should up up Sunday. |
| TelinArtho09-02-06, 03:24 AM | Well, each time that the hippogriffs gained sight of the pegasus, they lost sight of it and still had a charge lane open to attack Karen. To avoid the AoO from Karen - they would've need a much higher intelligence - that is - to backtrack around and attack from the other side. Since they were acting on their own there (as in - Daisy wasn't there to correct them) that's pretty much what they had to work with. If you'd rather I can change the flavor from charge to move to base the pegasus - but the result is the same. |
| Vathelokai09-02-06, 05:12 AM | Zodiac vs R'y is up, but I notice a problem... @UserName - Sent tactics for R'y (Ray) vs. Zodiac. I have to work untill the deadline tomorow so if you have any questions i'll have to fix them at that time. It sucks. At least my internship is almost done. Apparently something was lost somewhere. Perhaps he sent them to UserName instead of UserNamer: I noticed that Cat made the same spelling mistake in the pairings roster. If possible I'd like to see the fight run; but of course that is the pitlords perogative and I won't argue it. |

Only one thing for sure to correct you on: In round 9, Farig and Whirlwind are unable to take down Rinar and Nole. Then Istima fires an energy ray into the melee - which means Istima gets a -4 to her attack roll for firing into a melee. Meaning the shot is a miss. Given that I underestimated Istima's AC, it probably won't make a difference, but I would like to see it edited in. I thought there was more - but after reviewing the fight with a fine tooth comb - there's only the bit of an error in round 5, when Whirlwind readies and doesn't make the attack (but I disagree that the horse would ready in this situation regardless). |

| TelinArtho09-02-06, 10:14 AM | EDIT: And while it doesnt really matter, I dont understand why you have Karen put the pearl away in round 3 only to draw it again in round 5. Because she could see the hippogriffs coming, and Bobo was not in sight. If you'd rather - I can keep the pearl in hand - but then you won't be taking those hippogriffs down... your spiked chain is two-handed. |

Wait -- since Istima is firing at a Large creature (Farig + horse), doesn't this rule apply? If your target (or the part of your target you’re aiming at, if it’s a big target) is at least 10 feet away from the nearest friendly character, you can avoid the -4 penalty, even if the creature you’re aiming at is engaged in melee with a friendly character. |
| SauroGrenom09-02-06, 10:29 AM | For the purpose of clarification, I read Hogarth's battle. It is a common misconception that a mount's actions and a rider's actions can be distributed as is done in round 5 of this battle. If Farig makes a full attack action or any action for that matter, this must happen at the same time as the mount's actions. So the mount effectively wastes its actions waiting around while the rider performs a full attack. It is not possible for a mount to ready an action while the rider full attacks someone. It is possible for a mount to attack durring a readied action. This happens when the rider readies to attack, and the rider also uses the "attack with mount" action as a free action to instruct the mount to attack when the rider attacks. Creatures of animal intelligence shouldn't take readied actions unless they have a trick that includes that or unless we are talking about a wait and pounce kind of situation where no other options are available. I wouldn't give animal inteligence that kind of tactical decision making. |

| Usurpator09-02-06, 10:39 AM | I wouldn't give animal inteligence that kind of tactical decision making. Cannot agree more. I see animals making tactical decisions all the time, sometimes based on instructions given by the player before. Ready actions, total defense, grapples, all kinds of things without tricks, and without getting instructions by its master, like the animals are preprogrammed somehow. |

| NiQil09-02-06, 08:09 PM | @ NiQil - In response to your PM about moving in the water, I checked the rules for any mention whatsoever of a minimum depth of water needed for swimming. All I found was this: Originally Posted by SRD Any character can wade in relatively calm water that isn’t over his head, no check required. Key there: water that isn't over his head. 5' deep water is definitely over the head of a character taking up a 5' cube, particularly when they are in actuality themselves less than 5' tall. So you do need to make swim checks here to move, you can't just walk on the bottom. Besides, common sense is also screaming at me that water that is about the same depth as your height is going to be damn hard to walk in instead of swimming in due to natural buoyancy - I've tried that in swimming pools myself, actually. I want to respond to this, because it has a very large bearing on this fight, and I very much disagree with your interpretation. Your natural inclination here is boiling it down to the actual height of the character, rather than using a standarized height of 5 ft. By your argument above, someone that is 6 ft tall would not be subject to your ruling. You also mention natural buoyancy. That would be counteracted by the full plate. Since all medium characters are assumed to occupy a 5 ft cube in 3D, regardless of actual height and weight, what you seem to be saying is that no medium-sized (or smaller) creature can enter 5 ft of water without making swim checks. I very much disagree with that. Bogs: If a square is part of a shallow bog, it has deep mud or standing water of about 1 foot in depth. It costs 2 squares of movement to move into a square with a shallow bog, and the DC of Tumble checks in such a square increases by 2. A square that is part of a deep bog has roughly 4 feet of standing water. It costs Medium or larger creatures 4 squares of movement to move into a square with a deep bog, or characters can swim if they wish. Small or smaller creatures must swim to move through a deep bog. Tumbling is impossible in a deep bog. The water in a deep bog provides cover for Medium or larger creatures. Smaller creatures gain improved cover (+8 bonus to AC, +4 bonus on Reflex saves). Medium or larger creatures can crouch as a move action to gain this improved cover. Creatures with this improved cover take a –10 penalty on attacks against creatures that aren’t underwater. Deep bog squares are usually clustered together and surrounded by an irregular ring of shallow bog squares. Both shallow and deep bogs increase the DC of Move Silently checks by 2. This is talking about another portion of the same map, the deep bog. It clearly states that only small creatures or smaller have to make swim checks in the bog. I would think that streams attached to this bog would fall to the same rule. Ultimately, however, it's your decision. Either way, it will be a precedent-setting decision. |
| Zevox09-02-06, 09:05 PM | I want to respond to this, because it has a very large bearing on this fight, and I very much disagree with your interpretation. Your natural inclination here is boiling it down to the actual height of the character, rather than using a standarized height of 5 ft. By your argument above, someone that is 6 ft tall would not be subject to your ruling. Not at all - I merely mentioned that as an enhancing reason for my decision in this particular case. I still hold that 5' of water would fall under the category of "over the head" of a medium creature, even if we're looking at a 7' Half-Giant. (Incidentally, in my own games I would personally apply the actual height to my rulings, but since here we're using that cube size rule for everything and not just combat reach I feel I have to rule it like this.) You also mention natural buoyancy. That would be counteracted by the full plate. In reality that would most likely be true, granted. But not every medium character entering that water is going to be wearing armor, much less full plate, and I'd prefer to have a universal ruling on this rather than one based on what you're wearing. (Here, anyway.) Since all medium characters are assumed to occupy a 5 ft cube in 3D, regardless of actual height and weight, what you seem to be saying is that no medium-sized (or smaller) creature can enter 5 ft of water without making swim checks. I very much disagree with that. That is indeed what I'm saying. This is talking about another portion of the same map, the deep bog. It clearly states that only small creatures or smaller have to make swim checks in the bog. I would think that streams attached to this bog would fall to the same rule. Ultimately, however, it's your decision. Either way, it will be a precedent-setting decision. Notice that it mentions that the bog is 4 ft deep. That doesn't come up to a 5' creature's head. Should not 5' deep water carry a larger penalty than the bog, since the water is as deep as your space is tall? Also, I've been using the 5' of water as 4x movement for a horse - to whom it is only half its cube's height - and I certainly can't see permitting a medium creature the same luxury as a large creature in that much water. The only thing I can see to resolve that is to take it to swim checks. Besides, the distinct lack of clear rules for this leads me to believe that the depth of water required for creatures to swim instead of wade is an area DMs and players were expected to use common sense on, and mine is telling me theres no way in hell that a 5' character can wade in 5' of water. Precedent-setting or not, that will be my decision in my fights unless rules to the contrary are found or a ruling by the elders or Cat overturns it. Zevox |

| NiQil09-02-06, 10:08 PM | @ Zevox: Another thing about the fight so far.... Any character can hold her breath for a number of rounds equal to twice her Constitution score. Drowning checks wouldn't commence until round 51 (16 Con x 2 = 32 rounds from round 19). However, at this point...I am going to wash my hands of this fight. There have been too many arbitrary decisions here that I do not agree with, but that I know you will not overturn. Therefore, consider this Ook's forfeit. |
| Zevox09-02-06, 10:24 PM | Afraid I got that message a tad bit late - Rubicanti vs Ook Scalari is up. Turns out that the swimming ruling mattered little really. I'm sorry you're not pleased with the fight's rulings, but I can only rule things to the best of my ability and knowledge, and those are the rulings I have made based on that. On the drowning checks, thats odd. The rules by the swim skill say its only 1 round per constitution point. Again, didn't matter for the fight, but I'm guessing one or the other is a mistake. Zevox |
| MindWandererB09-03-06, 12:02 AM | Afraid I got that message a tad bit late - Rubicanti vs Ook Scalari is up.Tiny, niggling, insignificant thing, but you had LOS established in round 3. If you check the LOS lines that you put up, not a single one of them fails to touch a tree, at least on a corner (which is all it takes). So no LOS there. Doesn't really matter much, just an FYI. The swimming thing definitely looks like a call for errata--especially since under the Swim skill, you run out of breath twice as fast if you take standard actions of any kind, effectively making that version only 1/4 as "good." |
| TelinArtho09-03-06, 12:19 AM | Yes please proceed with the change. Okay the edit has been complete. Small point to the discrepency above and the edit. You said the first spring attack would be in round 11, however, round 10 is when the brain lock ends. The only other thing I would comment on is whether to trip the dog or not. Since you didn't include the dog in the tactics, I could only go by what you have there. You didn't want to trip Bobo - just take him out, but you did want to trip the hippogriffs - but only because you wanted to touch them for the dispelling ability of your weapon. Since you didn't know that Athena was buffed - that reasoning wasn't available to you. In terms of tripping successfully, you were looking at a +14 trip check versus the dog's base +7 to resist - which isn't a huge difference. In other words - I had to make a quick judgement call and that seemed most fair at the time. In the future - specify the attacking conditions for all of your opponents and you won't have to worry about it. |

Re: Seaendithas vs. Kimahri - The only thing I do not like about this is that I specifically said in my tactics to manifest Force Screen if I got hit, and this never happened. Granted, that first hit that should trigger the Force Screen tactic for Seaendithas was a nice crit, I have noticed with Seaendithas that if he takes a hit he can still cling to life once his AC goes up. The next attack hit a 26 which would miss once I have FS on. I would at least like a rerun from after the point where I got hit using Force Screen from either pp or a power stone. It is your choice though. |

It is your choice though. Well, your tactics said two things: (not in this order) 1. "If Seaendithas is hit with an arrow, go ahead and manifest a force screen stone right after that" 2. "If outrunning the barbarian does not work and melee happens, use a Flurry of Blows with Stunning fist....After this, 5' step away and draw power stone of Force Screen, and manifest." I felt the second one was more applicable to the situation you were in. Do you really feel differently? I don't mind doing the rerun, but I think I was true to your tactics as received. Your very next move was going to be moving away and manifesting force screen...but you died too soon. |
| Sindorin09-03-06, 01:18 AM | Ah, that makes sense, so no worries here then! I guess I didn't think through what would be more urgent in those circumstances. Next time I can just make sure to buff AC first. |

While there is nothing mentioned in her tactics about readying a lightning bolt you did it(smart), yet Karen needlessly moves into Daisys sight and stays there while Sping Attacking Athena(at least if I read the map correctly, which I may not). Also I think its strange that in round 10 you decide that Karen should trip Athena(I agree), but in round 12 you simply attack(I disagree). Beeing low on HP, Karen should do all in her might at that point to prevent any attacks at her, and trip is her strongest weapon there. |
| Usurpator09-03-06, 03:07 AM | However, at this point...I am going to wash my hands of this fight. There have been too many arbitrary decisions here that I do not agree with, but that I know you will not overturn. Therefore, consider this Ook's forfeit. Lack of clear rules will (unfortunately) result in arbitrary decisions, that's not a Pitlord's fault. The maps could use some more rules. In the case of the forest map: 'medium-size or smaller characters must swim, larger creatures can wade across the stream' for example. Whic reminds me, I still have a reply about your earlier comment about the sewer map (because the boards went down as I was writing it earlier). I'm curious as to why you would think that we would not use rules that are already in place here. The RAW is clear on what is required for the situation...why would we deviate from that? If this is not what was intended, then the map should be altered accordingly. As it stands, I see no reason to not use the rules that are already written for this situation. Because I think the maker of the map simply never read up on the RAW when he created the map rules, otherwise he would have probably provided an addendum about the time, since offering an option that takes at least 10 rounds is nonsensical. Since I rate the intelligence of the map maker higher than offering nonsensical options, I asked for a clarification. The rules may be clear, but they may be unintended nonetheless. Most probably, the Pitlord even might never read up on the Escape Artists rules, and allow it during a move action because that would make sense. But rather than relying on Pitlord judgement, I would like to know in advance. I'm asking for a clarification on the map, not a clarification on the rules. If something doesn't make sense, it would make sense to clarify it. |

Your question makes much more sense now than when you originally posed it. Your original post seemed to indicate that you thought that we should ignore the rules that were there and create our own. Now I see that you are looking for clarification on the map itself. Unfortunately, only the author can answer that. Several questions about the maps have been posed, but I don't recall them being addressed. Most of the new maps lack any coordinates, for example. Makes it extremely tough to track things on them. |
| Zelck09-03-06, 06:52 PM | Aramur vs. Luxt'l (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9981863&postcount=900) is up. It all ended in one round... |
| TelinArtho09-03-06, 11:26 PM | 2 things: - Not allowing Thranduil to move into Daisys square defeats the whole purpose of him beeing there. - I cannot hide my feeling that you are playing Daisy smart and Karen dumb. 1. Its not a matter of "allowing" Thranduil or not - it simply can't be done and that's something that neither you nor I realized at the time. Maintaining a grapple requires moving into the characters' space. Since by doing so, it would also be entering the space of Athena and Artemis - there's simply no way it could work. The rules of Gladius do specify a special case to get someone off of their mount (or join them on it) - but in this case that is not the only problem. Since I pointed out this issue before I did the final edit - and you told me to proceed anyway - I can't really say much more. I warned you that there was a possibility the pegasus would die, and it did. 2. As to the spring attacking, again my hands are tied. You wanted cover - which you had in the original run. You asked to spring attack anyway - and I complied. However, by forcing the spring attack - there was no way NOT to come into view of Daisy (and vice versa). We're talking about narrow sight lines and corridors. For the ready - Daisy had to wait behind Bobo and had nothing more to do than shock you with lightning bolts. Readying when she isn't able to do so at the time of her action is not a far stretch. I agree that I apparently wasn't consistent about either tripping or regular attacking. However, since we're talking about something that isn't in your tactics - I'm unlikely to change it just because you think it will give you another chance at success. Since you completely ignored the dog in your tactics, you can't really say now which you "should've" done. If you are going to go there - I happen to think your "best chance of success" would've been to trip the ogre as much as possible first. Spring attacking on a map where every square is a double-move square for you instead of full-attacking after a successful trip would also be put into the territory of things I disagree with. |

Damn super-crit on the first real attack. No way to argue with (or prevent...) something like that. Stinkin bad luck getting in the way - without the crit he might've been able to outlast the croc too. Well, I was right about one thing at least - it was a brutal battle. Thanks for the run Telin. At least one good thing comes out of this - I get to do Asran's next quest at EL 9 instead of 10 so he gets the rewards from it. :) Zevox |
| Traevanon09-04-06, 09:10 AM | @Telin: I am trying to understand why you did not allow the grappler to enter the grappled person's square in Daisy vs Karen, but I cant make heads or tails of your map. Its just too much information without labels or order. From what I gather from the conversation, a (large) Pegasus wants to enter a grapple with the (small) rider of a (medium) mount, but by doing so must cover the square of the (medium) ally standing in the next square. Is that right? Edit: Also, what the heck is BoBo... |

Thanks for running the fight, I hope you feel better soon! :) Anyway, there is one minor issue which I don't think will matter much: the successful fort save halving the 17 damage should bring it down to 8, not 9. He'll end up with 0 HP (disabled). Now, I'm out of LOS, so it shouldn't make a difference. Even if he readies to shoot upon spotting me, my "He's out of LOS" contingency should kick in and I'd also be readying. We'd both get hit with the delay penalty, but he'll get hit with it first because he'd be starting it on round 5, whereas I'd be starting it on round 6. He'll have to do something with his move action, and then I'd be forced to move out and shoot him. If Ivan wants you to play this out, I won't argue with that, but otherwise, I think it's good. Thanks again for running the fight :). |

I don't think it would change anything if I'll add it to the fight. Ivan needs a crit with max damage to win. The way the fight was going would let Ivan do one shot before you would nail him down with one more EM. I'll go and make that roll. If that's a 20! with at least 26 damage I'll change the fight. And a 20! he gets. Too bad the damage isn't enough and he wouldn't even confirm the critical - so no need to edit the fight.1d20+7=27 1d8+3=4 (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=481#18557) 1d20+7=12 2d8+6=10 (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=481#18560) |

Bobo is an ogre mercenary - you can see his sheet in the merc's of Gladius thread and it is linked in the Mercenaries post in the Characters Thread. However, in order to maintain the hold, the pegasus would need to enter the space of the halfling and eagle as well as a medium riding dog who is in an adjacent square. @lonewolf and DSugui - I have received a response from Cat about the rewards and I am supposed to treat Bobo as another fighter in the combat, rather than as a completely free ally. As such, the rewards have changed. I will be posting the corrected results shortly. @Erithmu, DSugui, Zevox - Rith is right - I botched the rewards. I will be posting the fixed rewards soon. |

(NOTE: I could roll to determine your search patterns, but that might cost me my sanity.) I have seen this comment before, and to me it indicates that the forest map is currently *way* too large. Even opponents that want to find each other might wander around fruitlessly. A map with that much options to hide should be a lot smaller. @Usurpator: This one you won because of your horses. That and a little luck (ironically, considering my opponent's nickname). Aramur's Will save is his weak point. A potion of invisibility and the horses are mys primary means to deal with hold person/sleep users etc. |

Im gonna accept the loss and wont ask for any rerun, but this ruling worries me for future fights. It means that a mounted character is automatically immune to grapple, since his enemy cannot move into the same square that he is in because of the mount. I dont think that this is supposed to work that way. |

It means that a mounted character is automatically immune to grapple, since his enemy cannot move into the same square that he is in because of the mount. I dont think that this is supposed to work that way. We do have a precedent for grappling on a mount in the Rules: the grapple takes place on the mount's back. If the mount can't bear that, the combatants are pulled off, and are subject to the "accidentally ending up in the same square" rule (they go prone, IIRC). But the adjacent dog is the problem in this case. |

| Traevanon09-04-06, 03:24 PM | The rules are fairly clear on the matter. Step 4: Maintain Grapple. To maintain the grapple for later rounds, you must move into the target’s space. (This movement is free and doesn’t count as part of your movement in the round.) Moving, as normal, provokes attacks of opportunity from threatening opponents, but not from your target. If you can’t move into your target’s space, you can’t maintain the grapple and must immediately let go of the target. To grapple again, you must begin at Step 1. Telin is right. The only exceptions to this rule are for mounted grappling, which occurs on the back of the mount, immobile monsters and those with Improved Grab (though I cant find the quote right now) which instead pull the target to the grappler's square. |

Nothing too major, but some things to consider. |
| Pittbull09-04-06, 03:44 PM | Do I get you right here?- It is written in the rules that you cannot grapple somebody if you are large and there is somebody next to your target? And there is not enough space to place the grappler elsewhere, saying the grappler must move into an occupied pace where for example the dog is? Whow this is crazy, as an adjustment I would rule to use the overrun rules. What's your opinion? This cannot stand this way! |

| Pittbull09-04-06, 04:11 PM | @DSugui: Tactics received! After reading the tactics, I have some questions: (1) Animals, called by a back of blabla, cannot deliver a coup de grace? - Right? (2) Staying at the rooftop in the city requires balance-checks? (3) I remember, the errata of the wildshape-ability of the druids. How has it been changed? What happens to the worn and carried equipment. Does it mend or fall to the ground? Please help me, since I need the answers to run the fight correctly, it'll be up tomorrow evening for sure. |
| lonewolf09-04-06, 04:22 PM | (1) Animals, called by a back of blabla, cannot deliver a coup de grace? - Right? While I am not really independent, I see no reason why not. BTW: those animals have done CDG in more than one fight already. (2) Staying at the rooftop in the city requires balance-checks? yes: Rooftops: Roofs are 20ft above the ground and they have only one height. A character must succeed at a Dc15 Balance check to move. Failure means the character makes no progress while Failure by 5 or more means the character slips and falls from the roof at the closest edge. (3) I remember, the errata of the wildshape-ability of the druids. How has it been changed? What happens to the worn and carried equipment. Does it mend or fall to the ground? Im not sure at the moment, but I believe that it falls of. |
| MindWandererB09-04-06, 04:35 PM | The following is the full text of the Wild Shape rules with the errata edited in appropriately. It is pasted from the TLT thread. At 5th level, a druid gains the ability to turn herself into any Small or Medium animal and back again once per day. Her options for new forms include all creatures with the animal type. The effect lasts for 1 hour per druid level, or until she changes back. Changing form (to animal or back) is a standard action and doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity. The form chosen must be that of an animal the druid is familiar with. Each time she uses wild shape, she regains lost hit points as if she had rested for a night. The new form’s Hit Dice can’t exceed the character’s druid level. —The druid retains the type and subtype of her original form. She gains the size of her new form. —The druid loses the natural weapons, natural armor, and movement modes of her original form, as well as any extraordinary special attacks of her original form not derived from class levels (such as the barbarian’s rage class feature). —The druid gains the natural weapons, natural armor, movement modes, and extraordinary special attacks of her new form. —The druid retains the special qualities of her original form. She does not gain any special qualities of her new form. —The creature retains the spell-like abilities and supernatural attacks of her old form (except for breath weapons and gaze attacks). She does not gain the spell-like abilities or supernatural attacks of her new form. —The druid gains the physical ability scores (Str, Dex, Con) of her new form. She retains the mental ability scores (Int, Wis, Cha) of her original form. —The druid retains her HD, hit points, base attack bonus, and base save bonuses, although her total attack and save modifiers may change due to a change in ability scores. —A druid loses her ability to speak while in animal form because she is limited to the sounds that a normal, untrained animal can make, but she can communicate normally with other animals of the same general grouping as her new form. (The normal sound a wild parrot makes is a squawk, so changing to this form does not permit speech.) —The druid retains any spellcasting ability it had in its original form, although she must be able to speak intelligibly to cast spells with verbal components and she must have humanlike hands to cast spells with somatic components. —The druid is effectively camouflaged as a creature of her new form, and she gains a +10 bonus on Disguise checks if she uses this ability to create a disguise. —Any gear worn or carried by the druid melds into the new form and becomes nonfunctional. When the druid reverts to her true form, any objects previously melded into the new form reappear in the same location on her body that they previously occupied and are once again functional. Any new items worn in the assumed form fall off and land at the druid's feet. —A true seeing spell or ability reveals the druid's natural form. A druid using wild shape reverts to her natural form when killed, but separated body parts retain their shape. A druid cannot use wild shape to take the form of a creature with a template. A druid can use this ability more times per day at 6th, 7th, 10th, 14th, and 18th level, as noted on Table: The Druid. In addition, she gains the ability to take the shape of a Large animal at 8th level, a Tiny animal at 11th level, and a Huge animal at 15th level. At 12th level, a druid becomes able to use wild shape to change into a plant creature with the same size restrictions as for animal forms. (A druid can’t use this ability to take the form of a plant that isn’t a creature.) At 16th level, a druid becomes able to use wild shape to change into a Small, Medium, or Large elemental (air, earth, fire, or water) once per day. These elemental forms are in addition to her normal wild shape usage. In addition to the normal effects of wild shape, the druid gains all the elemental’s extraordinary, supernatural, and spell-like abilities. She also gains the elemental’s feats for as long as she maintains the wild shape, but she retains her own creature type. At 18th level, a druid becomes able to assume elemental form twice per day, and at 20th level she can do so three times per day. At 20th level, a druid may use this wild shape ability to change into a Huge elemental. |
| TelinArtho09-04-06, 05:24 PM | Rough luck in the Faelto fight, though I'm glad my opponents hadn't considered my tactic. Too bad I got Faerie Fired though. Anyway - I have no complaints - nice run. /d |
| hogarth09-04-06, 08:47 PM | Reginald Molehusband vs Phiro is complete. Zevox There's one thing to note, Zevox. Nosnra the psicrystal would not get Spot checks against a foe more than 40' away: psicrystals can only see within a 40' radius. I also forgot about this fact when I did Istima's fight! Also, you don't need to specify a target for the Attack trick (although you may). If you don't specify a target, the animal will attack "apparent enemies"; if there aren't any apparent enemies, then I presume the animal will do nothing. |
| TelinArtho09-04-06, 09:18 PM | Okay- I've apparently missed something on the city map that is only just now at my attention: There are four buildings with balconies - I can identify those, because the balconies are described as 4 squares long and so it is obvious which buildings these belong to. However, there is also scaffolding which allows access to the roof on some/all buildings (description is not specific). What I don't know is where the scaffolding is. I think in previous city fights I treated the balconies and scaffolding as the same, but now I'm pretty sure that I was wrong in that. Can someone show me where this scaffolding is? Thanks |
| MindWandererB09-04-06, 09:23 PM | The southwest scaffolding is at (0,3) to (1,3). I forgot about that balcony once, in the Alagar/Karen/Ignatius fight. Would have saved Karen a hit point or two. Oh, well. |
| Zevox09-04-06, 10:50 PM | I don't have any problem with the result, but a couple of things I think I should point out. - Enlarge person has a 1 round casting time like summons (could affect the Move silent of Sauria in the round that Treetall pinpoints You are correct, it most certainly would! With that Sauria's dexterity modifier is higher, so Treetall only beats the MS check by 19, one short of pintpointing. I doubt it would change much of anything, given that Shadowsong would just cast See Invis then take his killing shots and Treetall would entangle her since he can't Faerie Fire her, but if Telin wants me to play it out with that correction I will. - Should have been a pair of concentration checks (entangle, damage while casting) during the summoning casting. True again - I forgot about them. They could only make the result more sure though, and if I do rerun it they may or may not happen, so one way or the other they're not particularly important. RP risks for RP gain. And we'll just have to see about getting you a new head, devil-boy--you just better hope it's in the cavern again next time. *chuckles* Considering Asran's body dissappears on death (hes a true outsider, his body & soul are one and the same), losing his head isn't anything he has to worry about. And next time they fight he'll have a new friend who won't be very pleasant for Aerryl  . And I'd take the sewers over the cavern anyway ;) . (1) Animals, called by a back of blabla, cannot deliver a coup de grace? - Right? (2) Staying at the rooftop in the city requires balance-checks? (3) I remember, the errata of the wildshape-ability of the druids. How has it been changed? What happens to the worn and carried equipment. Does it mend or fall to the ground? 1) I don't see why not. If they see an opponent incapable of resisting an attack, why not just go for a killing blow? 2) Not staying on them, but moving when on them is a DC 15 check, yes. 3) The equipment is melded with the Druid's new form, as MWB's post says. There's one thing to note, Zevox. Nosnra the psicrystal would not get Spot checks against a foe more than 40' away: psicrystals can only see within a 40' radius. I also forgot about this fact when I did Istima's fight! True, I forgot about that. My apoligies, though it really doesn't matter for that one, does it? Also, you don't need to specify a target for the Attack trick (although you may). If you don't specify a target, the animal will attack "apparent enemies"; if there aren't any apparent enemies, then I presume the animal will do nothing. Eh, I'd tend to think that if you try to tell them to attack when theres no enemies about, its a wasted effort. They're not going to attack as soon as an enemy comes into view just because you gave an attack order earlier. A matter of interpretation I suppose. What I don't know is where the scaffolding is. I think its those wooden-looking objects in the start boxes (the spaces MWB mentioned). Though it should probably be specified better, since it took me some time to come to that conclusion myself (and it was mostly reached because those were the only things on the map whose identity I wasn't sure of). Zevox |
| hogarth09-04-06, 10:58 PM | You are correct, it most certainly would! According to CoCo rules, a modifier of +19 locates the target within a 5' radius, so that should be good enough for a 5' radius spell, right? That's why I wrote: If Faelto is invisible and Treetall pinpoints her within a 5' radius, Treetall will cast Faerie Fire on her. I guess that raises the question "If you make a good listen check, do you know just how well you did?" Eh, I'd tend to think that if you try to tell them to attack when theres no enemies about, its a wasted effort. They're not going to attack as soon as an enemy comes into view just because you gave an attack order earlier. A matter of interpretation I suppose. I agree that it would be a wasted effort; that doesn't mean that you can't try it, though. I wasn't suggesting that they would ready an action to attack or someting like that. |

He has two outstanding fights, so I doubt he'll finish them both on time... and one of those characters (Ilendil) will likely be involved in a guild fight this Wednesday, so it would be nice if he didn't end up double-booked. |
| Zevox09-04-06, 11:21 PM | @ MWB - I didn't figure you meant taking his head, just beheading him as a sort of irony. Didn't realize you were speaking of his looking for a replacement from Aerryl though. And yeah, thats an aweful lot of fights. I'm running mine tomorrow - I would have done it tonight, but I had to cover for someone at work - so no worries there. I know KU's said hes been busy with his job of late, which explains why hes late this week. Not sure about ayyiniwindryder though. And Sauro had said he was going to do his today, so its a little odd that its still unaccounted for. @ hogarth - Ah, forgot it was a 5' radius spell there. Yeah then, wouldn't change anything, so the fight's good as is. And I'd presume you would know how well you heard them - louder noises, less confusion about where they may have come from, etc. Zevox |
| SauroGrenom09-04-06, 11:27 PM | My wife and I traveled this weekend. I went to a wedding and we had to drive about 6 hourse each way. We just returned this evening. I've got to update the PSI thread and make the necessary PM's for that. Also as part of PSI activities I need to update things for my character Raskos. I'm starting on the Harvester vs Denshai fight now. |
| ayyiniwindryder09-04-06, 11:37 PM | @ my fighters - Unfortunately, I ended up being out of town far longer than expected. Between just getting back and needing to be up early for work all day tomorrow, I will be unable to run both of my fights before the new pairings are made. Setups with tactics have been posted if anyone wants to pick them up. My full apologies, guys. Klipquabjeg vs Kervan SETUP Celia vs Ilendil SETUP |
| TelinArtho09-04-06, 11:45 PM | Sali Kan vs Ihdald Seaslash vs Khabil Barukh is up. Let me know if there are issues. @Zevox - I concur that there were some things missed, but I don't think alterations are needed. The outstanding attacks from Shadowsong was more than enough to make the fight definitive... @all - I might be able to take the Klip vs Kervan fight tomorrow - but no promises. I would certainly appreciate it if someone would take the Ceilia vs Ilendil fight for numerous reasons. |
| Zelck09-04-06, 11:51 PM | I could take the Celia vs. Ilendil fight. Should be pretty quick. |
| MindWandererB09-04-06, 11:53 PM | @hogarth: Just read your plan for Kilp. That's one hell of a tactic. Obviously I underestimated you completely. If you win this one--and I think you will--you deserve it. One problem with them, though: using wands requires speech. So you can't do that while completely submerged. Of course, having a +8 AC is pretty good anyway. |
| King Uther09-05-06, 12:04 AM | @gladiators Fights being worked on now. Had to stay overnight in a hospital last night, so I didn't get a chance to work on anything yesterday. Bought a house today though. A mixed set of days. |
| Zelck09-05-06, 12:52 AM | Celia vs. Ilendil (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9994000&postcount=912) completed. Gaze upon the luck gods, ye mortals, and despair! |

Yeesh, Tymora must have been flipping coins to see who she'd favor for that one. Every round at that. Thanks for the quick run Zelck - looks fine to me. Zevox |

| King Uther09-05-06, 02:35 AM | Sunstroke intercepts Dronnar is up. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9993713&postcount=911) There must be some sort of glitch, because there is a delayed sblock which cuts off the fight and screw up everything above it. I tried re-editing the entire fight, going through the sblocks and making sure nothing was extra or wrong, and that made me lose the fight links. And by the time I posted the whole fight again, the fight looked crappy all over. If anyone can give any insight here that would be awesome. |
| Vathelokai09-05-06, 03:55 AM | Not sure exaclty, but sometimes if you have one tag start outside the sblock, and close inside the sblock it causes the tags to mess each other up. For example a centered text Followed by sblock then an end center then a closed sblock causes 2 sblocks to apper with only one sblock tag. Hit quote to see what I mean. |
| King Uther09-05-06, 03:59 AM | Tezca vs Anakala and the Undertaker is up. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9994946&postcount=915) Very interesting outcome. Luck REALLY favored one side. |
| Vathelokai09-05-06, 04:00 AM | One more outstanding fight to the above; Zodiac vs R'ymund. It was posted in the fight thread, but there was a mistake in sending the PMs, which caused the no tactics issue. Usurpator has taken that and told me he's working on it. |
| McJarvis09-05-06, 04:26 AM | Man, I hate that I have to do this with so many fights still unresolved, but.... @Iced I think you mis-read our tactics. This is the tactics PM I sent you: We conferred and came up with this: tactics: MONCH: start out with greatsword in hands. Wherever Monch starts, cast Eagle's Splendor from mind, then cast Aid from mind, then Divine Favor, the Entropic Shield, then Obscuring Mist on self, in the meanwhile send horse to find opponent and charge-grapple him. I can do this becouse i got 4sl from 1st fight. *note to McJarv- ((my horse might not listen, so if u use your speak with animal ability, u can order him to do this, please do so, the horse will probable kill him, horse got +13 grapple, opponent got +6.)) Then move out to find opponent ,once in sight, cast protection from chaotic from scroll, go in close melee(run or double move or move, please RUN), then activate Charm Domain, then charge him while using Divine Might. 2d6+12 damage. Keep doing so and always use charge if possible. If he manages to hit me for a lot of damage(putting me to 8 or less, heal and scrap a lvl1 spell away for CLW, then use potions). --------- McJarvis(Mort Noir) tactics- General notes: I'm cool with using my speak with animals ability to command his horse to grapple Hood. Use this if my ally is incapable of commanding the horse to grapple...first chance I get. Our tactics generally revolve around us being together. I believe we are going to use my darkness as a beacon to find each other easily as well as let Hood know where we are. wouldn't want this to be an extended battle. If I am ever spotted, RUN/HIDE. There should be enough corners in this place for me to re-hide with -20 checks. movement- always move at half speed while hiding(to avoid the -5 to move silently). I will try to write this in my tactics so you can't forget Start: Start with a powerstone of Preciense, Offensive as well as a powerstone of chameleon in the other hand. Round 1: use the chameleon(duration 10 mins) powerstone and then move forward at half speed while brushing my cloak away from my holy symbol. Start hiding. Round 2+: Start slowly(half speed) moving towards the center. Pull my holy symbol from around my head, and don't use the powerstone of offensive yet. When I get to the center, toss the holy symbol towards the center of the arena, but not so far that I am out of range of the darkness. Situate myself somewhere near the edge of the center courtyard & draw my bow. When I see hood, get some cover between us and then use the powerstone of preciense while trying to suppress the manifestation(auditory, material- DC 16 concentration). Now "it's on" Only expend my psionic focus for psionic shot if hood is NOT engaged in melee. Move around so I can sneak attack(30ft) if he isn't in darkness, if he IS in darkness then keep my distance. If my ally and his horse goes down, then start hiding/re-aquiring my psionic focus between shots. If they are still fighting hood, then forget psionic focus and just give supporting fire. (at a -4 because of a lack of precise shot) Needless to say, I will have to request a complete redo. Mort didn't follow the tactics I specified at all-- you must have missed the entire last half of the PM somehow... |
| Usurpator09-05-06, 04:34 AM | Tezca vs Anakala and the Undertaker is up. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9994946&postcount=915) Very interesting outcome. Luck REALLY favored one side. Thanks for running it, it does has some (possibly critical) errors though. Nail travels out to touch the lycanthrope, who does touch the defenseless were-leopard, paralyzing Tezca instantly. [Touch: 17 Fort save: 5+10=15 Paralyzed for: 7 rounds] A. Nail has only Blindsense, which only allows him to pinpoint the square Tezca is in, but not actually see Tezca. Thus Tezca still benefits from full concealment against Nail (and thus a 50% miss chance). B. If Nail travels farther than 5 ft. from its master he loses his invisibility and mirror images and Tezca will gain his Dex bonus against the attack. C. Don't forget that Tezca gets +4 AC from cover against touch attacks (in case it might matter). A question: do allies start automatically in the same square nowadays? I thought it was random, and seeing tactics from my opponents, it looks like they thought so too. Tezca, knowing they are about to get sniped, readies a sniping shot vs Nail. Anakala moves closer. The Undertaker casts Ghoul's Touch, and Tezca discovers there is someone invisible close. Anakala 26/26 AC22 Bless; Invisibility Purge [Round 52] Shield of Faith [Round 54] Bull's Strength [Round 55] In my opinion my opponent tactics were rather brief and poorly coordinated. Invisibility Purge combined with invisibility and the intention of joining up (from the Undertaker's part) should prove a lethal combination for their team. As far as I can see the positions in round 8, Anakala's move will cause her to come within 25 ft. of the Undertaker, and thus remove his invisibility 'before he even starts to cast'. Oops... As always, I'm not in favor of Pitlords rewarding brief and/or poor tactics by improvising better ones or compensating for them. Also, why doesn't Tezca delay? He has no action to take but wait. Taking his action before anything can be done seems a bit dense if you ask me. Not a problem in itself, just wondering. |
| Usurpator09-05-06, 04:35 AM | One more outstanding fight to the above; Zodiac vs R'ymund. It was posted in the fight thread, but there was a mistake in sending the PMs, which caused the no tactics issue. Usurpator has taken that and told me he's working on it. That's correct, at work now, will continue tonight (and probably have it up then). |
| King Uther09-05-06, 04:38 AM | I blame it on the exhaustedness of buying a house today, but you are absolutley right. Particularly on the ally losing invisibility and mirror image. Sure, Invisibility Purge would screw over the Undertaker, but even without that Tezca wouldn't be hitwith the touch and the readied action for shooting Nail would come up before Nail even got there anyways. So, despite having to wake up for work in 5 hours, I will rerun that fight from that round, giving Tezca the readied action shooting and see if he remains hidden from everyone else who knows the approximate area of Tezca but couldn't possibly pinpoint. If for some reason I begin to fall asleep while typing, the full edit will be done on my lunch break tomorrow. |

Tomorrow or wednesday is fine with me too, it seems you already have a lot on your plate, this is only a game after all. BTW Tezca cannot take a readied action sniping, its a full round action to snipe, but don't know if you meant that but its just the sleep kicking in. Oh, and congrats on the house! |
| King Uther09-05-06, 05:09 AM | I worked up a little more, and there were a few things that are seeming hazy to me. The first is puling out a powerstone while blinded in the muck. I ruled it doesn't make sense, but leaving the muck for melee it may be possible if there is some system designed to make it easier to locate Powerstone C. But even then, the rules for Scent vs Blindness are somewhat undefined. I'll finish it tomorrow night when I get off of work, with someone hopefully filling me in or I remember when I feel more awake. Peace, all. |
| Usurpator09-05-06, 05:41 AM | I worked up a little more, and there were a few things that are seeming hazy to me. The first is puling out a powerstone while blinded in the muck. I ruled it doesn't make sense, but leaving the muck for melee it may be possible if there is some system designed to make it easier to locate Powerstone C. I agree. Next time it might help to specifically say to have a particular pocket for each stone. Even so, I see powerstones as scrolls you don't need to look at to see what it contains, but must mentally adress it to see what it contains. After you have done this adressing, merely touching it allows you to 'read out' the power of the stone (after all, you cannot read it like a scroll). Thus if you assume all the stones are in the same 'pocket or bag', then rifling through them and briefly touching them should be able to determine what the stone contains. Note: this is purely my opinion and not covered by the rules. It is my attempt to make sense of how powerstones work in relation to scrolls. But even then, the rules for Scent vs Blindness are somewhat undefined. I'll finish it tomorrow night when I get off of work, with someone hopefully filling me in or I remember when I feel more awake. Peace, all. To me it seems obvious, but since my opinion might be biased I don't think I should not give advice concerning this issue, I'll leave that to others. Also, please be careful with the sniping. I see the Undertaker casting a spell at Tezca but I have no idea how he is able to see Tezca. He knows Tezca's square through information from Nail, but knowing a square is not good enough for firing off a targeted spell... EDIT: it seems you have Tezca shooting on a readied action instead of sniping. Please use the sniping option. I would not have gone to all the trouble of using energy adaptation, chameleon and hiding in the sludge if Tezca is not going to snipe. |
| hogarth09-05-06, 07:10 AM | @hogarth: Just read your plan for Kilp. That's one hell of a tactic. Obviously I underestimated you completely. If you win this one--and I think you will--you deserve it. One problem with them, though: using wands requires speech. So you can't do that while completely submerged. Of course, having a +8 AC is pretty good anyway. If you could show me where it says you can't talk and cast spells underwater, I'd appreciate it. In fact, in the description for underwater combat it implies that spells can be cast underwater: Spells or spell-like effects with the fire descriptor are ineffective underwater unless the caster makes a Spellcraft check (DC 20 + spell level). for instance. It's possible I'm missing something, though. |
| Usurpator09-05-06, 07:28 AM | You can talk underwater, no problem. It may sound a bit different than above water, but that is not a problem for the spell. Biggest problem with talking underwater is that you start drowning if you do so. If you have a way to prevent drowning while trying to talk, you are free to cast verbal spells. You just can't hold your breath and talk underwater at the same time. |
| Traevanon09-05-06, 08:00 AM | Since you dont get items until *after* the week you create them, it would seem to be wise to craft replacement scrolls during my 3rd week's Free Activity. Is this possible or do I have to wait until my 7th fight overall to recieve the things I crafted if I dont want to take a week off? This time tactics ran against me. I hoped that I would be able to get to Ihdald and fight with him for a while before Sali could find us. It happened as I planned, but I still came out on the bad end. Briefly I thought about using Locate Object to *avoid* Ihdald, but that would have run counter to this Dwarf's personality. Also, worn down from fighting Sali there would be little chance against someone with a CLW wand (which I will also have soon). I also thought about sending Sali a PM to team up, but you never know how that will work out. So, I thought my best chance was that Sali would be targetted on Ihdald also. Obviously that was a bad call. Good fight! Nice shooting Ihdald. Good crit Sali. |

Biggest problem with talking underwater is that you start drowning if you do so. If you have a way to prevent drowning while trying to talk, you are free to cast verbal spells. You just can't hold your breath and talk underwater at the same time. This seems reasonable, but I'd like to see an Elder's ruling on it. I don't think the rules say what you can or can't do while holding your breath, other than saying that standard actions decrease your time remaining. I guess there are three interpretations of the rules posited so far: 1) (loosest) You can do an activity that requires speech while holding your breath underwater. A few bubbles float to the surface and you lose a bit of oxygen (as with performing any standard action while holding your breath), but you're still holding your breath. 2) You can do an activity that requires speech while holding your breath underwater, but then you have stopped holding your breath. You have to surface, or start drowning. 3) (strictest) You can't do anything underwater that requires speech; your voice is too muffled. I don't particularly care which interpretation is decided on, but I'd like to know for future reference. |
| Sunwolf09-05-06, 08:53 AM | @Telin Thanks for running the Lief Vs Varia fight. @Sindorin Congrats -- I expected Varia to win if the phantom steed survived the first fireball... For the future we should determine what kind of reflex save a phantom steed is supposed to get. Will post the question on the question for the Elder's thread. |
| UserNamer09-05-06, 09:01 AM | Monch and Mort Noir lost this battle: http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9995003&postcount=916 first post: http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9994697&postcount=913 i think we lost becouse my horse didnt do anything, while I could command him becouse i have ranks in Handle Animal Magister said that those were illegal, but there not becouse I only listed 12skills points, while I had 18, didnt see that in the first fight, i got putten in to prison for that, so I added 6 points, and those went to handle animal, dont see why that is illegal. So I'm asking for a rerun, or at least a fight in witch my horse listen to my commands. Also In my tactics i wrote that just before attacking him i activate Charm Domain, meaning that i would do 2d6+12 damage, the damage i did was 2d6+10 = 21, if u would have followed my tactics i think he would be dead. Damage: 2d6 = Greatsword +4 = 2handed Strength +1 = Divine Favor +7 = Divine Might > +3 normal cha +2 eagle's +2 charm domain so i think this fight should be run over, or just the part where you forgot to add 2 damage(meaning that I win), first becouse my horse should have moved, and second becouse my damage was higher. But even though my horse didnt move, i still did enough damage to put the guy on 0 hp, meaning that i would probably win. And one more thing, on round 10 Hood has 2/34 On round 11 I hit him for 21, meaning he should drop right? |
| TheMagister09-05-06, 09:55 AM | I'm fine with a rerun. TM |
| TheMagister09-05-06, 09:57 AM | And one more thing, on round 10 Hood has 2/34 On round 11 I hit him for 21, meaning he should drop right? i think that's a misprint. Hood had only been hit once by Mort (the lucky son-of-a-gun) for 14 damage out of his 34 hp. Hood should be at 20. TM |
| Erithmu09-05-06, 10:33 AM | i think that's a misprint. Hood had only been hit once by Mort (the lucky son-of-a-gun) for 14 damage out of his 34 hp. Hood should be at 20. TM 20-21 = -1? ... wouldn't he drop either way? |
| UserNamer09-05-06, 10:59 AM | i think that's a misprint. Hood had only been hit once by Mort (the lucky son-of-a-gun) for 14 damage out of his 34 hp. Hood should be at 20. TM Thank you Erithmu, so that means we won, right? |
| TelinArtho09-05-06, 11:26 AM | @King Uther - I realize you are still working on it - but I am curious why you have not used the tactics in Ana's tactics. Yes IMW is in there - but after Doom, Hold Person and Blindness/Deafness. |
| McJarvis09-05-06, 12:46 PM | Thank you Erithmu, so that means we won, right? If we won I won't demand a re-do( :) ), but as it stands now Mort didn't follow my tactics at all(see earlier post- just making sure that doesn't get forgotten) We didn't win. There were some other issues as well- in my real tactics I held off shooting psionic shot until I could get it off cleanly for good reason- when you try to use it it uses up your psionic shot whether you hit your opponent or not. Mort for some reason used it on his second shot--I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't have been available(missed the first shot), and thus Mort's hit on hood would have been for very little damage. And thus all of this is irrelevent. Redo the fight. |
| Erithmu09-05-06, 12:49 PM | .... I ... um ... didn't ... look at the fight. Um ... I was just showing off my arthmatic skills ... yea ... |
| Zevox09-05-06, 01:20 PM | Since you dont get items until *after* the week you create them, it would seem to be wise to craft replacement scrolls during my 3rd week's Free Activity. You get items crafted as free activity at the end of your cycle, so if you craft something in fight 3, you would indeed get it immediately thereafter. Zevox |
| UserNamer09-05-06, 01:54 PM | No redo, that is unfear, my horse didnt do anything, my damage was higher, he didnt follow your tactics, he ddint activate my charm domain, AND we actually won becouse of a mistake in Round-order, so now do it over???? give hima nother chance??? thats a no-go for me, thing about it MCJarvis If we won I won't demand a re-do( :) ), but as it stands now Mort didn't follow my tactics at all(see earlier post- just making sure that doesn't get forgotten) We didn't win. It sounds like TelinArtho is a bit swamped. The tactics are pretty bog-standard, so it shouldn't be tough to run. It should be a fun one; if all gladiator fights were this interesting, the Coliseum would get a lot morasses in their seats, I bet! I'm anxious to find out who slough whom. | MindWandererB09-05-06, 02:57 PM | @McJ: UserNamer is arguing against a re-run, not for one. If the fight is done any time before the Wednesday deadline, you won't be forced to sit out, but you may not have time to set your character(s) ready in time. However, unless the pitlord PMs Cat to say that the current result is not correct, and the fight should be held over, then the result will stand. |

| Zevox09-05-06, 04:02 PM | Darrgon the Summoner vs Joanni, aka the invisible summoner vs the deaf Cleric, is up. All I can say is that the dice Gods have had strong opinions on my fights all week, and this is no exception. Zevox |

Please check and let me know any issues. A minor issue I have, would be that I did request a 2nd and 3rd vigor stone during energy bursts within my tactics. A minor issue would be my desire to put Kraegin between myself and Perius. While this may seem like a small thing, it would cause Perius and Kraegin to possibly both be within a single breath weapon attack. Also in round 8 I should have a second attack from my boots of speed. Might cause some changes in when/if sanctuary gets cast. |

Looking at the rolls, I was wondering if you used Denshi's 1/cycle cleric travel domain ability of freedom of movement to escape a first unlisted grapple; since there is only one touch attack listed, and it hit, Denshi should get out of it. Not that it makes much difference in the long run, since no one rolled below an 11 to hit in the entire fight... Spirit d20: 5 rolls, 12.2 average d4: 4 rolls, 3 average KnellStrider d20: 3 rolls, 16.7 average d8: 3 rolls, 5 averageOf course I fully expected a loss, but I should have thought to put grappling tactics in there. And rememering that knellstrider could fly would have helped. |
| MindWandererB09-05-06, 04:47 PM | Actually, it makes no difference at all, since the Travel domain applies only to magical effects. |
| Usurpator09-05-06, 05:08 PM | Zodiac vs. Rymund is finished. Old vs. Young, Foolish vs. Wise, Quick vs. Slow. A fight of two gladiators intent on letting the other make the first move. |
| TheMagister09-05-06, 05:17 PM | There is the small matter of Monch casting 7 of 4 spell levels in the fight, and that one of his 2nd level spells should be spiritual weapon or calm emotions. 1) Eagle's Splendor (2) 2) Aid (2) 3) Divine Favor (1) 4) Entropic Shield (1) 5) Obscuring Mist (1) So, lessee here. Of those spells, the ones I'd want to keep are Eagle's Splendor, Divine Favor, and Entropic Shield. So Monch's to hit/damage would look like this: Normal: +7 greatsword, 2d6+4 damage [+2 BAB, +3 Str, +1 focus, +1 enh, +1 div. fav. luck] = +8 to-hit [+3 str*1.5 = +4 str, +1 div. fav. luck, +7 divine might (16 cha +4 enh +4 feat)] = +12 damage. So, +8 greatsword, 2d6+12 (19-20/x2). With Mort missing his first Psionic Shot (this is a thematic roll McJ, and most pitlords keep rolls in their places even in edits/reruns) and blowing his focus, Hood is in MUCH better shape than I first thought (only took 7 damage: Hood at 27/34 hp). So, Monsch's stunningly killer greatsword attack actually still hits 17+8 = 25 (darn not having force screen!) and deals two more points of damage (21+2=23). Leaving Hood at 4. Finally, I think Iced left out PBS for some of Hood's to-hit/damage calculations. Hood to-hit: +12 deepcrystal longbow [+4 BAB, +4 dex, +1 enh, +1 focus, +1 off. precog., +1 PBS] Hood damage: 1d8+6, +2d6 psionic shot, +2d6 deepcrystal [+2 str, +1 enh, +2 off. prescience, +1 PBS] Whoa! Check that! Hood HITS Mort in Round 8, dropping him! Hood refocuses and misses 1d20+12=16 1d8+3=7 2d6=5 (+3 damage from stuff left out). That obviates even the 7 damage that Mort does with his hit (bummer). The only thing that might save you guys is McJ's tactic involving the darkness, which might cause Hood to miss b/c of concealment. And, to clarify: I don't want a RERUN, precisely (unless Iced just feels like it). An EDIT would be fine with me. I'm also somewhat immune to the frustration of fights being held over. It seems like one of my two fights always ends up being assigned to a pitlord with RL issues. =) If it needs an extra week to get figured out, I'm cool with that. TM |
| TelinArtho09-05-06, 05:46 PM | Is anyone else willing to run the Kilp vs. Kervan fight? It sounds like TelinArtho is a bit swamped. The tactics are pretty bog-standard, so it shouldn't be tough to run. It should be a fun one; if all gladiator fights were this interesting, the Coliseum would get a lot morasses in their seats, I bet! I'm anxious to find out who slough whom. In the meanwhile, time marshes on... You know - after looking at the tactics, and running through the first 25 rounds or so, I'm starting to not like this fight... not because it is tough to run - but more because it is annoying... oh well. Anyway - still plugging away. Oh - and Why does Kervan not have any regular arrows? |
| MindWandererB09-05-06, 05:55 PM | Because I noticed not long ago that cold iron arrows are insignificantly more expensive than regular arrows. I see no need to pack both. |
| Erithmu09-05-06, 06:10 PM | There is the small matter of Monch casting 7 of 4 spell levels in the fight, and that one of his 2nd level spells should be spiritual weapon or calm emotions. *snip* TM To add more fun, Divine Favor is an illegal spell for the second week since it was cast the first week. Monch doesn't have his first fight of the cycle listed, he used two spells there, and thus actually has 6 spell levels available for this fight. So if you drop the Divine Favor everything is fine. |
| McJarvis09-05-06, 06:21 PM | I don't want a RERUN, precisely (unless Iced just feels like it). An EDIT would be fine with me. The thing is, none of my tactics were followed at all. Mort didn't even hide during the fight, and sniping is a huge part of Mort's character(perhaps the only thing to mort's character?). The changes my tactics provide would completely change the outcome starting at round 1...I would catch hood flat-footed, I might have sneak attack, I might not because of the darknes, etc, etc. It would just be a completely different fight. I'm gonna have to ask for a re-run. PS/EDIT- I really don't mind it running an extra week either. I have other character concepts to attend to, one of which is an upgraded version of mort. |
| TelinArtho09-05-06, 06:56 PM | Kilp vs Kervan is up. Effective but annoying tactics wins the day... |
| MindWandererB09-05-06, 07:05 PM | Yeah... effective. A supply of natural 20's far less than I should have had, statistically, also hurt. There is one thing that should be edited: I specifically asked to renew Shield only once. Too bad you didn't spot that, it would have saved you some time. But I didn't want to use up all three scrolls in one fight. Edit: Also, Resistance is a 0-level spell. |
| hogarth09-05-06, 07:20 PM | Kilp vs Kervan is up. Effective but annoying tactics wins the day... I appreciate your tenacity in die-rolling. Thanks a lot! I guess Kervan's Furious Double Arrows of Fury maneuver was no match for Kilpquabjeg's Lethargic Muskrat technique (eventually). |
| MindWandererB09-05-06, 07:26 PM | It was more Kervan's Idiotic Fury of Arrows Into the Water maneuver. This is one of those times when I wish I could have adapted my tactics--Kervan now only has ~40 arrows to last him 2 fights. I should have stocked up more. |

But I didn't want to use up all three scrolls in one fight. Edit: Also, Resistance is a 0-level spell. Good point. I'll try to get some time to edit those tonight. The only difference is that you'll get a few more arrows - but we'll have to see how many. |

This is one of those times when I wish I could have adapted my tactics--Kervan now only has ~40 arrows to last him 2 fights. I should have stocked up more. Hence the reason I never start a cycle with any character less than 100 arrows... |
| MindWandererB09-05-06, 09:13 PM | Hence the reason I never start a cycle with any character less than 100 arrows... Well, I did have 88--maybe not 100, but pretty close. I lost over half of them, largely because I didn't anticipate Kilp's tactics at all. Well, I should get about 10 or so back when ten rounds of the fight get rewound. |
| Ravashack09-05-06, 10:02 PM | Round 6: Where is that +1 to hit (High Ground) from? I wasn't aware airborne creatures automatically get a +1 bonus to hit. Other notes: Because you used Electricity, the DCs on both Energy Bursts are wrong. Electricity from any energy power that allows a save adds +2 to the DC and manifester level (for overcoming power resistance) as well. The equivalent of 8 PP invested (with Wild Surge) means that the DC for that one is 20. (10 base, 3 from level, 1 from augmentation, 4 from Charisma, 2 from Electricity.) The equivalent of 11 PP (with Wild Surge) invested means that the DC on that goes to 22. (10 base, 3 from level, 3 from augmentation, 4 from Charisma, 2 from Electricity.) Neither alter any events because of the high rolling, but just a point for you to know in the future. |
| DSugui09-05-06, 10:29 PM | A minor issue I have, would be that I did request a 2nd and 3rd vigor stone during energy bursts within my tactics. A minor issue would be my desire to put Kraegin between myself and Perius. While this may seem like a small thing, it would cause Perius and Kraegin to possibly both be within a single breath weapon attack. Also in round 8 I should have a second attack from my boots of speed. Might cause some changes in when/if sanctuary gets cast.Hmmm... the positioning is not that important at all, but the Vigor and the extra attack could change the fight indeed. I will try to edit the fight before deadline, but I can't promise anything. Round 6: Where is that +1 to hit (High Ground) from? I wasn't aware airborne creatures automatically get a +1 bonus to hit. I will try to edit the fight before deadline, but I can't promise anything. I would disagree with you here. Only because after sanctuary comes up the only thing I can hit Kreagin with is my breath weapon, which is still fairly potent. I ask that you consider it. |
| SauroGrenom09-05-06, 11:38 PM | Denshi vs Harvester is finished. Sorry about the delay. Various duties pushed my arrival time back from 5:00pm to 9:00, so I wasn't able to finish this till just now. Thanks for your patience. |
| NedTheDestroyer09-05-06, 11:43 PM | Darn all that work and i still lost lol oh well. However I noticed that in the after fight stuff it said i used a scroll. I don't own any scrolls. I'm sure its just a typo. Thanks again all involved. So sorry about my typo. |
| Iced09-06-06, 12:08 AM | No redo, that is unfear, my horse didnt do anything, my damage was higher, he didnt follow your tactics, he ddint activate my charm domain, AND we actually won becouse of a mistake in Round-order, so now do it over???? give hima nother chance??? thats a no-go for me, thing about it MCJarvis A) I didn't recieve tactics for Mort B) Monch has numerous violations and is currently in prison The fight should be a default win for Hood anyway and I won't redo it without TM's consent or intercession from an Elder. |

In Monch's defense he has fixed those errors (they are currently fixed) it has just not be listed as fixed in the prisonthread by the original poster. |
| McJarvis09-06-06, 12:13 AM | A) I didn't recieve tactics for Mort B) Monch has numerous violations and is currently in prison The fight should be a default win for Hood anyway and I won't redo it without TM's consent or intercession from an Elder. You DID receive the tactics for Mort. I still have the PM I sent you saved(auto-saved all outgoing PM's) and would gladly take a screenshot or even give Cat my password so he can see it himself. I sent both fighters tactics in the same PM. I cut/pasted it earlier in this thread. I normally wouldn't be this confident about this- but the tactics you display for Monch are actually the first half of the same PM that mort's tactics were in. |
| Iced09-06-06, 12:15 AM | Wow, there's a whole second section to the tactics that i didn't even see. The line used to seperate them looked exactly like the bottom of a pm. Sorry McJarvis. If you want i'll edit the fight to include your tactics, but it'll be over to next week if i do. ~Iced |

If you want i'll edit the fight to include your tactics, but it'll be over to next week if i do. ~Iced Thanks. From now on I'll make sure to note at the beginning of my PM's that I'm including two sets of tactics...I fully understand how you got confused on that. and I don't think anyone minds it running two weeks. Again, thanks for workin with me on this... :) |
| UserNamer09-06-06, 01:14 AM | rerun on the next week it is then? should we be sending other tactics? |
| TelinArtho09-06-06, 01:18 AM | Well, I did have 88--maybe not 100, but pretty close. I lost over half of them, largely because I didn't anticipate Kilp's tactics at all. Well, I should get about 10 or so back when ten rounds of the fight get rewound. Edit is complete. You used ~6 less arrows I think. Since the rolls were all misses, I just moved the single shot round down and out of the fight and moved the two-shot rounds up. Not keeping with "thematic rolls" but since they were all misses - I was just saving me time. |
| lonewolf09-06-06, 01:31 AM | Comment on Destra vs Kitty vs Neidr. (fight is only partly up, but finished at the CoCo roller) From a discussion this week in the Tavern I gathered that Kittys SR should actually be 19+ class levels = 20 That would save me from the spell in round 21(produce flame?) No reason to edit it unless the fight is edited anyway. |
| TelinArtho09-06-06, 01:31 AM | Hmmm... the positioning is not that important at all, but the Vigor and the extra attack could change the fight indeed. I will try to edit the fight before deadline, but I can't promise anything. The only comments I can add about the fight is that Kraegin's tactics were used - just out of order. The dispel magic may have seemed reasonable, but I only asked for that after Perius was downed. Why? Because the buffs he has don't matter to me - and it helps keep Perius focused on his target and more importantly - Kraegin is focused on his target. As such - the sanctuary would be a round earlier and the first summons would be finished before the first energy burst. The 2nd summons would still be blocked out - but at that point, according to my tactics - I would be healing anyway. If you are going to be making edits - I would appreciate this taken into account as well. |
| King Uther09-06-06, 01:46 AM | @Telin I was sooooo(one infinity later)oo tired when I was working on that fight, so tactical objections are easily found. I am starting to work on it now, and Doom+Hold Person will be the method of interaction prior to melee. |
| King Uther09-06-06, 02:01 AM | Tezca vs Anakala and the Undertaker re-run is complete. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9994946&postcount=915) The fight as a whole did not change. The Undertaker spots Tezca sniping, Blinds him, gets into melee. But this time Anakal hits with a Doom and Hold Person, both of which Tezca fails his saves for. And since Anakala casts a spell from a distance, Tezca doesn't get the full attack before losing, and moves upwards, basing both enemies simultaneously. With an up close Scorching Ray CDG, Tezca never got a chance to try and re-save against paralysis. Let me know if I missed anything. Re-running a fight from any point it is easy to lose some fluidity. |
| Pittbull09-06-06, 02:51 AM | Destra vs Kitty vs Neidr (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9999023&postcount=920) is up. I hope, didn't make too many mistakes. I read allready Lonewolf's comment, but this wasn't a major issue. In the heat of the battle I forgot that, next time, please send a reminder as an add-on. |
| Usurpator09-06-06, 03:05 AM | Tezca vs Anakala and the Undertaker re-run is complete. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9994946&postcount=915) The fight as a whole did not change. With an up close Scorching Ray CDG, Tezca never got a chance to try and re-save against paralysis. Let me know if I missed anything. Re-running a fight from any point it is easy to lose some fluidity. Much happier with this version. Still a bit confused what happens in round 8. I'm going by the data from the map in round 7. It's Tezca's turn. It says he readies to snipe, but that's impossible, so I assume he delays until the first target is available. It's Anakala's turn. She and the air elementals move forward. Considering that she is 50 ft. removed from the Undertaker, she has a 25 ft. invisibility purge active, and she can move 35 ft. forward, she will make the Undertaker visible. Then Tezca can take his turn, and he will to snipe at Nail. Then the Undertaker spots Tezca, casts blindness and Tezca fails the save. In round 10 (which should become round 9 if you play it correctly) you have Tezca trying to rehide. I have a specific contingency for this Tezca being blinded (which is to use the Synesthete to overcome Blindness), and also a general tactic for when Tezca is discovered (which is to move away and draw my opponents apart). Neither was used, and even worse, you have Tezca spend a round doing effectively nothing. If you do desire to improvise at that juncture, please do an effective improvisation, and not a nonsense one. Trying to rehide in the muck after being discovered and under observation is impossible, I don't like it when my characters try impossible things, because if they do I somehow know in advance that thet won't succeed. :) About the synesthete: Tezca's stones are not in his backpack, he doesn't even have a backpack (see his equipment listing). He stores them in special compartments in his potion belt so that he can find them easily (even while blinded). Of course this is not in the description, but neither is where people store their potions, powerstones and scrolls, and reason would argue that you cannot find those things in many of the situations that are encountered too. Synesthete has been used before to counter blindness, and I don't think it ever has been a problem finding the proper stone. The rule don't make special exceptions about using powerstones while blind. I would wager that creatures that do not have vision can make use of powerstones without penalty. Since this is potentially combat turning decision on your part, I'd like to hear more about it (and a response to my earlier explanation how I view 'reading' powerstones and how you can distinguish one from the other). Also, don't forget that Tezca must revert to animal form after taking enough damage. This wasn't done, although in the latest version it didn't matter. Thank you for running it. Nothing to be done against the failed hide roll (please take into account range penalties) and a failed Fort save. Still think I'm a bit unlucky after considering both sets of tactics. |
| Abyssal Stalker09-06-06, 04:59 AM | Still think I'm a bit unlucky after considering both sets of tactics. Maybe, maybe not. Team-tactics are hard to get done in only two days when the participants are living on different time zones. At least from my side we didn't have enough time to discuss tactics properly and we didn't want to push the deadline. But on the other hand, you had to survive quite a lot: blindness (DC16 & DC19), hold person (DC16) and ghoul touch (DC19) - which are often referred to as "save or die"-spells. And our side had a lot of energy attacks ignoring your DR. These things gave me faith on a positive outcome allthough the tactics were written hastily. |
| Vathelokai09-06-06, 06:01 AM | Denshi vs Harvester is finished. Sorry about the delay. Various duties pushed my arrival time back from 5:00pm to 9:00, so I wasn't able to finish this till just now. Thanks for your patience. Appologies for the bad tactics. I was rather rushed, and not in a good frame of mind for rational thought. I accept the outcome, but I have some issues with the fight. At start Denshi cannot see Harvy becasue the statues are in the way. Since Harv is mounted on a large creature, I should be able to see him. He would have cover, of course, but anything taller than the medium sized statues is definitely seeable (since the top corner of my starting cube can draw a line to all cubes of higher elevation). The disarm manuver I was thinking of is at the bottom of the disarm sectionGrabbing Items You can use a disarm action to snatch an item worn by the target. If you want to have the item in your hand, the disarm must be made as an unarmed attack. If the item is poorly secured or otherwise easy to snatch or cut away the attacker gets a +4 bonus. Unlike on a normal disarm attempt, failing the attempt doesn’t allow the defender to attempt to disarm you. This otherwise functions identically to a disarm attempt, as noted above. You can’t snatch an item that is well secured unless you have pinned the wearer (see Grapple). Even then, the defender gains a +4 bonus on his roll to resist the attempt. The definition of 'well secured' has come up before and never been resolved, but I have trouble believing that a weapon waiting to be drawn (it was mentioned as an option in the tactics), could be well secured. In any event, thanks for running it. |

I read allready Lonewolf's comment, but this wasn't a major issue. In the heat of the battle I forgot that, next time, please send a reminder as an add-on. Looks fine to me. Thats pretty much the result I was expecting anyway. Thanks for the run. Zevox |
| Erithmu09-06-06, 09:34 AM | @Telin, Ravashack: you guys ok with a hold over on the fight if Dsugui doesn't finish it before deadline? |
| Ravashack09-06-06, 10:35 AM | There's nothing I can do about a hold over. Go ahead with it. Perius will just have to not participate next week again because I this is the last time I can edit the character for 9-10 hours.. |

Frankly I'd rather not - but that is ultimately up to DSugui. I'll wait to edit my sheet pending a final final outcome for the moment. EDIT: Edit of Kervan vs Kilp complete for the scroll. I also forgot to remove the extra shield scroll in the previous edit - so that's gone too. |
| DSugui09-06-06, 12:30 PM | Sorry guys, things are insanely insane at work and I won't be able to edit the fight. If you want it to hold over, please PM Cat to make sure it is - I will try to work on it tomorrow (it's holiday here in Brazil). |
