Deadline for this week is up in about 5 minutes.

Post any comments or concerned for this weeks fights in this thread, be aware of the Rules of Gladius, be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, don't feed the pitlords, and above all, have fun!

Since, Pitlords PM box is full....

The Sola Vs Lord Frost Fight was fought in a seperate thread fight. You can find it at This location

Lord Frost Leveled and is now ECL 6

Figured, I would mention it here.

I've PM'ed Pitlords about this but it hasn't been changed in the character actions post.

That's going to be impossible to track when they (Wizard mods) clean up old threads.

I would personally rather not have a character sitting out solely because his fight got skipped over when checking to see which fights were still outstanding.

I'm sorry for the confusion. Everything has been corrected and the box is clear of PMs (lasts probably only till tomorow  ).

Ok, the boards are slow as hell and I had a lot of PMs and other things to catch up with. I thought I could do the pairings till midnight but I just finished with the pre-pairing preparation and that's too late. Why? Hint: I get 2° today ;)

I'll do them tomorow as soon as I wake up.

It appears that today is Washington's birthday, not Lincoln's (that was on the 12th). An appropriate person for the First Member of the CoCo (prestige-wise, not chronologically) to share a birthday with. Happy B-day, Cat.

PAIRINGS DONE

Thanks of all for the warm wishes! My friends come over soon so I'll make this short. Still, I have some important things to announce so please read it.

Random Events went GOLD! This is the first week that we see random events affecting the guilds. This time it hit the TLT, but that's a hit I'd take gladly anytime ;) Luni, please announce in the Guildhall which structure you'd like to have.

Please note that you can submit articles for the Gladius Weekly! Luni has 2 credits to give for the best articles. So far, she hasn't even assigned one because no one writes. Here's easy gain to make!

The Name for a continent poll was closed yesterday. Five suggestions made it into the final poll which will start tomorow. The one with the most voices will be the new name of our continent.

The State of Emergency has ended. Still, I have made it a permanent feature that as soon as there are less pitlords than pairings, I'll do that procedure immideately again up to the point of it becoming a permanent rule.

Late fights. There are still 4 late fights. Please keep in mind that every late fight is a burden on the next week's pairings (not to mention the annoyed players) so please please please try to get your assigned fight up on time.

Finally the credit assignments:
+9: Iced
+5: King Uther
+4: Caterane, Sauro, Vathelokai
+3: Sindorin, Myrridin
+2: Beferdeth, DSugui, Erithmu, Gonbow, Kaigan, Luni, Mitza, Nickbeat, Pittbull, Skojar, Warclone, Zevox
+1: Biota, DTF, Lonewolf, Macbrea, Mindwanderer, Mysticmonk, Turin
+0: Malither, Snommelp, NiQil
-1: Kedi, Huan
-3: Dracazar

As always, PM me if you want to know your breakdown.

And now, FIGHT!

02-23-06, 11:40 AM
Everyone,

After a discussion between myself and LLMC, we have determined that a further clarification of the hiding rules needs to be made. The Court Decisions post has already been updated this information, but I wanted to announce it so that you can make sure and use this in your fights this week.

Q: How does hiding work in the arena?
A: You are autospotted if you leave cover/concealment and your opponent has line of sight to you. This includes moving from cover/concealment to cover/concealment. The exception to this condition is that if you are moving from cover/concealment to cover/concealment and are within 1 ft/rank of cover/concealment at all times, you are still considered hidden and an opposed check would be required for anyone with line of sight to see you.

As you can see, it is not a big change, but it does clarify the fact that the intent of the 1 ft/rank rule is to allow sneaking characters the ability to move about the arena without losing their stealth. As always, if you have any further questions on the issue, feel free to PM Prisonlords.

This message cross-posted in the FotW, Tavern, and AaE threads

So can we have 2 PC's active per person, or are we making the 1/person a permanent rule?

@MitzaVolchenko - Tactics for Gaston in Gaston vs. Cher sent via PM.

Sate of Emerency has ended? Sweet! With the cost of higher-level characters going back down to 4o per level I'll probably be able to activate Archdevil Asran next week  .

@ Kaigan and DSugui - I'll have tactics for Eraca and Featylec off sometime this afternoon.

@ My players - Fights will be run on a first come, first serve basis. I've got time Friday and Saturday to run them, so as long as tactics are in before the deadline you should have your fights up in plenty of time to pick them over for errors.

As Kaigan wondered above, we need to know who the Pitlord for Ajora vs Gundir is. If there isn't one, anyone free to take it? It may not even take that long to run, if I have my way with it.

Edit:
@Zevox

Are we still on for the MQ? I didn't see it in the Pairings post.

@Pitlords, Gonbow,

Telveran is actually an ECL 8 character.

It looks like he did not get bumped to the correct bracket.

This is an unfair fight for Lortavos who is ECL6

Suggestions:
If you have another pitlord,
Lortavos could fight one of the people in the ECL7 all vs all
and Telveran could fight one of the people in the ECL8 all vs all.

If you don't have another pit lord,
Lortavos could fight one of the people in the ECL7 all vs all
and Telveran could be tossed into the ECL8 all vs all

hehe. Another near-autowin for Samuel.

@Snommelp: I would accept Griks surrender. :D
Surrender? Not when I've got a 100+ HP time limit in which to hit you for 12.

All you LA characters think you've got Grik beat; remember what happened to Aquin? He got cocky. He lost.
Gonbow

@Lonewolf: Tactics for Morgan in the all versus all have been sent. Looks like a weird pairing. *shrug* Not really sure how to write tactics for one of these, so I put in some fairly simple tactics, and what if statements. I figure it's going to be luck as to who runs in to who first.
Sindorin

02-23-06, 01:39 PM
Tactics for Va'ria will be sent later today... note what Sunwolf posted about Telveran being ECL 8, and let me know if something changes in the ECL8 FFA. Otherwise, I will write tactics after class and rehearsal - which will be in like 4 hours or so.

As Luni pointed out to me in a PM, Little Daisy is already questing with Luni as questlord. If Luni would like to make a trade for the quest, I would be glad to take on a fight instead; if not, I'll be losing a credit this week instead of breaking even.

As Kaigan wondered above, we need to know who the Pitlord for Ajora vs Gundir is. If there isn't one, anyone free to take it? It may not even take that long to run, if I have my way with it.

I can take the fight.

Actually, I can take a lot of fights, cause this week is Carnival here in Brazil and I will do nothing but slack off for 4 days. So, if anyone have problems running fights let me know.

Are we still on for the MQ? I didn't see it in the Pairings post.
Yeah, we are. When I saw Destra wasn't marked as questing in the roster I PMed Pitlords to see why he missed her. Turns out I forget to edit the date in her title when I edited it, so it still said "Ready for 2/15/2006" :embarrass . But Pitlords kindly activated her, so we're still good for whenever you can get it going.

@ MindWandererB - Tactics for Sunstroke recieved, thank you.

@Cat: You may be familiar with all the folks around here, but the rest of us aren't necessarily. Took me a while to figure out that "Malither" had a 76 on his name, and I hope Abyssal Stalker and Erithmu remember my "B."

Everyone,

Due to the new FAQ release, some changes have been made to existing rulings. Specifically, how natural attacks and Flurry of Blows work in relation to grappling.

Here is what was in the Court Decisions prior to the change:

Q: How do natural weapons work in a grapple?
A: Natural weapons may be used in the "Attack your Opponent" option to grant an attack with each part of a Natural Attack routine, with a -4 penalty to each attack...or they can be used to deal damage with the "Grapple your Opponent" option that can be used a number of times based on Base Attack Bonus. This damage is the same type of the Natural Attack (usually lethal).

Q: How does grappling work in combination with a monk's Flurry of Blows?
A: A monk may make a grappling check for each attack allowed to him by his Flurry of Blows once in a grapple. In the round used to initiate a grapple, he may still only make a single grapple check, just like anyone else, as per the grapple rules.

Here is what is now in the Court Decisions:

Q: How do natural weapons work in a grapple?
A: As per the 3.5 FAQ, under normal circumstances, a creature can attack with only one of its natural weapons while grappling (and it takes a –4 penalty on such attacks; PH 156). A creature that chooses to make grapple checks in place of attacks (that is, to damage its opponent, escape from the grapple, move, pin its opponent, or use its opponent’s weapon) is allowed one grapple check for every attack that its base attack bonus would allow (even if it doesn’t normally make multiple attacks in this manner). A creature with BAB +0 to +5 may make one grapple check in place of an attack, BAB +6 to +10 two, BAB +11 to +15 three, and BAB +16 to +20 four.

Q: How does grappling work in combination with a monk's Flurry of Blows?
A: Grappling normally allows one attack or grapple check for every attack that is supplied by the combatants base attack bonus. Since a monk's Flurry of Blows uses more than the monk's BAB to determine the number of attacks allowed to a monk in a full attack, it is not allowed to be used in a grapple.

Yes....this is almost a complete 180 from what we have been using up to this point, but the change to the FAQ shows that our interpretations were inaccurate. The bottom line, with regard to grappling, is that multiple attacks/grapple checks in a grapple are regulated solely by your BAB. These rulings will be effective with next weeks pairings. Any fights this week affected by grappled should still be done under the old rulings. As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to PM Prisonlords.

You seem to be saying otherwise.

And here we see Turin demonstrating an inability to read. Never mind. :D

Umm....it would really help if you would include the rolls in each round, so that I could see whether or not anything was incorrect. This is a required aspect of running a fight, regardless of whether you include a link to your rolls or not. I have no way to see the rolls, because I cannot access Invisible Castle.

Now, as to the fight....you appear to have done the exact opposite of what my tactics indicate. Since Alagar is clearly not mounted (known by the mount not moving and hearing noise away from the mount), and I have no way to know that he is faster than me yet (invisibility prevents me from seeing Skate in effect), I should be using my ranged tactics to move away and fire, rather than closing to melee. If I had pinpointed him in round 4 as you state in that round, I should be withdrawing, as per my ranged tactics.

Please take a look at this, as it appears that my tactics were applied in the exact opposite manner that they were written.

Edit: Also, in the fight summary, you forgot to list the CLW charge War expended. And for some reason the rewards don't look right to me....it may just be me. They might be..might just be my fuzzy memory...I'll take a gander at the Rules thread.

I have no way to see the rolls, because I cannot access Invisible Castle.<sigh> Why can't you access Invisible Castle? I can use it with either IE or Firefox. And since when is this "a required aspect of running a fight"? I don't see that anywhere in the rules, I've seen plenty of fights without it. But whatever, I'll see what I can do about getting an edit in to add this. Possibly in the next hour or so if I can manage, otherwise not until Saturday.

Being able to pinpoint your foe implies that you're able to perceive your opponent's movement, and thus his high rate of speed (not to mention the skate-like tracks he's making on the ground). Therefore, you switch to your melee tactics. Frankly, it doesn't matter, because he actually is using his faster speed granted by skate, so all this gets you is another round shooting at an invisible foe who you may or may not be able to actually pinpoint on subsequent rounds. You're just trying to back-track on your tactics here. There will not be an edit for this.

Edit: the awards were adjusted for Alagar's ally, +12.5% for you, -12.5% for him.

I cannot access Invisible Castle because my computer has trouble with the site. Somedays I can get on, somedays I can't. Irregardless of this, rolls should *always be included in a fight. I could care less if you link them...but being able to see what is rolled and the total modifier added is something that should be common courtesy, in my opinion. As an example, what would you do if Invisible Castle suddenly closed its site, and you had to rerun the fight for whatever reason? You would have no basis with which to do so, since the rolls aren't in the fight. As to others, I can't speak for them...I can only speak for this one. But keep in mind..precedence never proves that something is correct.

I'm sorry you feel this way, but I feel I should point out that pinpointing means nothing more than "I can tell what square my opponent is in". It gives me no way to see how he is moving, or how fast he is moving. For all I know, he could be flying, and I just heard him in that space.

I had no illusions going into this fight that I would win...I fully expected to lose. To state that I am trying to back-track on my tactics is incorrect, and slightly offensive. I never ask anything other than my characters be run according to how my tactics are written, win or lose. On more than one occasion I have had pitlords go back and edit fights for this reason, even though it ended up costing me more expendables, and in one case I can think of, the fight itself. If my tactics are applied correctly here, I would probably still lose. But anything is possible...a lucky crit is just a roll away. If you do not wish to edit the fight, so be it. But please don't sit there and tell me that it is because my tactics were applied the way they were written, because they weren't.

You would have no basis with which to do so, since the rolls aren't in the fight. So what do you do when you pitlord? Why the hell am I spending all kinds of time making all these little well-annotated fights in an online roller then? Waste of time... apparently I should stop using it. It would be a heck of a lot easier for me to generate the rolls locally and post them without linking... it'd sure make editing easier. But you know as well as I do that you're going to be stuck with online rolls soon enough, so maybe you should fix whatever the problem with your computer is.
As to others, I can't speak for them...I can only speak for this one. But keep in mind..precedence never proves that something is correct. If this weren't the CoCo, you'd be right, but that's clearly not the case 'round these parts. If I used only the rules listed in the Rules of Gladius thread to run my fights, I'd never hear the end of it. In any event, the precedent isn't the primary reason I'm saying it's not required, it's because the Rules of Gladius thread has no such rule.
But please don't sit there and tell me that it is because my tactics were applied the way they were written, because they weren't.Oh, I do so enjoy being called a liar. You're tactics were applied exactly the way they were written, assuming that my interpretation of the "pinpointing" holds. If you want to dispute the rules interpretation, fine, but the tactical interpretation was 100% down-to-the-word no-room-for-debate accurate.

Manzarf the Loathsome (Abyssal Stalker) vs Sola Nicous (Erithmu): MindWandererB is up. Check and correct as usual.

In round six, I think Sola should be back on his feet. He stood, and was hit by an attack of opportunity (which resulted in him being grappled), but I don't think that actually stops him from standing up. If that's true, it means that on round 7 he would be on his feet when he escaped the grapple.

Edit: I also don't see Sola's tactics in the fight.

I see some minor nit-picking stuff, but in all I don't think it will change anything. For the record I kinda rushed writing those tactics as I didn't even see pairings till this morning. In hindsight I should have added trip and grapple stuff, I just figured he wouldn't make the 2nd save.

If you will consider my tactics of wanting to cast hold then move to base and CDG I would have had a CDG on him. I tried to be very specific about this condition. (I'm w/ mal-2 I don't see them but I know em since I wrote em) I ask for consideration on this point.

Also I did take a free "plunk" at him so cross off an arrow.

In round six, I think Sola should be back on his feet. He stood, and was hit by an attack of opportunity (which resulted in him being grappled), but I don't think that actually stops him from standing up. If that's true, it means that on round 7 he would be on his feet when he escaped the grapple.

Edit: I also don't see Sola's tactics in the fight.Oops on Sola's tactics. They're there now.

As for standing... I will defer to an Elder ruling on this, but here's my interpretation: standing is a type of movement. A grappled character cannot move without the "move" grapple option. Since the AoO is resolved before the provoking action, the action of standing up is interrupted.

If you will consider my tactics of wanting to cast hold then move to base and CDG I would have had a CDG on him. I tried to be very specific about this condition. (I'm w/ mal-2 I don't see them but I know em since I wrote em) I ask for consideration on this point.Ah, I misinterpreted that. Okay, I think that's worthy of a correction. I'll take it back to that point (round 2... sigh).

Sunstroke vs Shashel Sasir (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8551748&postcount=283) is up. No big surprises here. Considering how straightforward it was I don't expect there will be any problems, but feel free to voice them if there are.

Loss accepted ... no love on the dice ... low damage roll, high save rolls ... well run.

Still need to add on my 2 arrow uses in expendables.

I have a plan.

For the record, my characters are:
Gnome Rogue/Wizard/Ranger,
Elan Fighter/Psion,
Goblin Adept/Druid/Barbarian (Winning Record!?!) and
Human Expert
so I think it's pretty clear that I'm working on building the perfect powerbuild party.

I think the expert thing is awesome, I'm just sad I didnt' think of it first.

Being hit by an attack while doing something does not stop you from doing the thing, unless the thing itself is disrupted by being hit, or being hit puts you into a condition which you cannot do the thing you wanted to do.

Laymens terms: You cant stop someone from standing up by hitting them. You cant stop someone from standing up by tripping them either (because at the time of the AoO, they are still on the ground). You can stop someone from casting a spell by hitting them. You can stop someone from doing anything by hitting them and killing them before they do it.

Hey guys I'm really busy this week with midterms and wont be able to do either of my 2 fights. All my gladiators have sent tactics in already. Take them at will!

Sorry about that.

Cyra Val (Stormwind) vs. Lord Frost (Macbrea) : Warclone
Basic idea: Snipe from cover until located. Then tumble away and throw blades until he drops.

Contingencies while hidden:
- If I cannot locate Lord Frost then move to another cover position. Take advantage of cover and whenever possible stay within 5ft of cover. Above all, do not stay out in the open, use racial burst ability if necessary. [Note that as Cyra has more than 5 ranks in hide, she will remain hidden as long as she is within 5ft of cover. Finally note that the 'within ranks of cover' distance is actual distance, not move distance as ruled in the Ask an Elder thread]
- Once I locate Lord Frost and have a shot, throw mindblade (charged with psychic strike) and expend psionic focus to deal +2d6 damage with psionic shot, with range penalty if necessary (-2 attack, 60-120ft; -4 attack, 120-180ft; -6 attack, 180-240ft) [Note that it is a free action to manifest mindblade, move action to charge pychic strike, and a standard action to throw it for 2d8+1 damage]
- If I miss a shot then use the mindblade's lucky enhancement (1/day) to reroll the attack.
- If I am hidden, undetected, and have time then attempt to regain my psionic focus.

Contingencies once located:
- If Lord Frost is within 0-5ft and I have a tanglefoot bag in my shield hand then use tumble (DC15) to move away at half speed and avoid AoO's (move action), and then throw tanglefoot bag with +10 ranged touch attack (standard action)
- If Lord Frost is within 0-5ft then use tumble (DC15) to move away at half speed and avoid AoO's (move action), and then throw mindblade with +12 attack for 1d8+2 damage (standard action)
- If I miss a shot then use the mindblade's lucky enhancement (1/day) to reroll the attack.
- If I am attacked use an immediate action (even if it is not my turn) to activate the heartening ability of my shield for the 5 temporary hp.

Notes:
- My first shot with the Mindblade will do 2d8+1+2d6 damage (shaped mindblade, psychic strike, psionic shot), others as normal
- Shaped mindblade is persistant (as per Ask an Elder ruling) so the mindblade remembers it's shape and will be a longsword each time it is created.
- Since my shield is mithril it counts as a light shield and so I can use that hand for other things (such as drawing and drinking a potion)
- the +10 hide bonuses from the Tattoo and the Elixir stack bringing my hide up to +33 (or +43 with improved cover, or +63 with invisbility).
- sniping gives a -20 penalty to hide again afterwards, but if the sniper successfully hides then the target cannot even locate the direction the attack came from.
- while I have my psionic focus I have a +10 bonus to speed from Speed of thought.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Prebuffs: Psychic strike, Psionic focus, Shaped mindblade (longsword), Mindblade enhancement(Lucky 1/day)
Starting position: front right of starting square ((-22,-4) or equivalent)
Starting equipment: Start with shield equipped, tanglefoot bag in shield hand and a mindblade in the other hand

Round 1: Move around the back of the column to other side of it ((-23,-6) or equivalent), tumble if necessary. Tap tattoo of biofeedback (DR 2/-, 1 minute)

Round 2+: Wait (but no more than two rounds, then move) until I see Frost then snipe. As soon as he locates me then go into my tumble and throw routine ... remember to use tanglefoot bag.

If you have any questions about my tactics please PM me.

Prebuffs: Psychic strike, Psionic focus, Shaped mindblade (longsword), Mindblade enhancement(Lucky 1/day)
Starting position: front right of starting square ((-22,-4) or equivalent)

If you have any questions about my tactics please PM me.Ok, my tactics for Lord Frost are pretty easy. I understand Cyra is a stealth based character. So, we have to do this quickly.

Selene Devonshire (Erithmu) vs. Dordleton (nickbeat) : Warclone
Thanks for running the fight

Start front and center of square sword drawn
Buff 3pp + 2 surge vigor from memeory

Move toward the central pillars.
I want to end up getting into a situation where I can shoot an energy ray
and then move behind cover so he can’t charge me. If he bases me tumble away
so that he cant TWF me

Damage:
Use 1pp + 2 surge energy rays fire to kill him
use the cog crystal last

I’m not overly worried about his potions but please use tumble if he is
enlarged and tries to base me. If he is invisible there isn’t much I can do.
Use the sword as a last resort, I shouldn’t have any pp to charge it so
don’t worry about that.

If you have any questions please PM me before running the fight, I know you
have my AIM as well.

-RithThanks for running this.

Here are the tactics for Dordleton:

Dordleton will bring his horse for this one, only way to keep up.
He should be holding only the spiked shield and SOF +2 in one hand. Draw weapons as needed.

Begin by riding around the center to find her, drink the potion in the first round. Ride around her at a reasonable distance using +4 AC cover from his mount and Fighting Defensively to boost his Touch AC to 22 for the first few rounds. Likely she will use Energy Rays to begin, and Dordleton hopes these attacks will be wasted.

After this, Use TWF and quickdraw to throw 2 javelins a round for a few rounds. Then, move to a position where she can charge, and use Shield and Total Defense for +7 AC (25 AC Total!). After she charges in with the sword, return the attack with axe and spiked shield.

Have the horse fight too while engaged in melee. Try to flank her using the horse to get in a sneak attack.

If damage goes below 12, 5-foot step, use Sanctuary potion. Then drink a healing potion or two, and use Force Screen Tattoo.

Use invisibility as a final option, then use enlarge and grapple her.

Please let me know if I'm confused at all in my understanding the the game mechanics here, feel free to polish if you like. I think you get the idea.

Happy Birthday Caterane.

Thanks for running my fight, but more or less, you completely ignore my tactics, this is not appreciated. I fully expected him to fly around and cast spiritual weapons, which is why I had a contingency for it. The spiritual weapons cannot attack me if Barth cannot see me. Given my character can move 200' a round (in a straight line) or 100' (in a more complex fashion), breaking LOS every round given the pillars that go from the floor directly to the ceiling should not be hard. Assuming he can make a single move every round and regain LOS, I'll only be attacked by one spiritual weapon a round, as he has to spend an action to retarget previously cast weapons.

As a note, the Brooch of Shielding does not take up a equipment slot.

Re: Mage hand; I use a standard to get it into my mouth, drop the spell, then another standard (on the next round) to drink it. It takes me longer to do it than anyone else, but it's better than nothing ;)

@ Everyone:

I have found some changes in the Rules thread that I think you should all be aware of. I have highlighted those changes in red:

Battles Thread: You will receive tactics from all gladiators that are assigned to you. Read through these tactics before you run the fight. If there is anything unclear or if something obviously won't work, send a mail or PM to the player and inform him of that. This pre-fight discussion helps to prevent misunderstandings and might actually save you a lot of time.

As soon as you have all tactics, you should begin to run the fight as soon as possible! Real life issues might come up later and prevent you from running the fight on time, and there might be a after-fight discussion on the Fights of the Week thread in case a player has some concerns or found a mistake in the fight (which needs to be corrected).

When you run the fight, you must list all rolls and the breakdown. For example: Angosh attacks [12+11+2+1 = 26]. Of course, no one prevents you to make a more elaborate layout.

You also have to include a summary after each round. This summary must show the positions of all combatants (including those of all summons and allies; don't forget elevation in case of flyers). If the gladiator is mounted, just write "mounted" into the position space and list the coordinates along with the mount. Current hitpoints, maximum hitpoints, remaining spell-levels and power points, and all spells, powers, and effects that are currently affecting a character, plus the duration (for very long spells you don't have to list the duration) are also mandatory. That also includes things like "summoning" or "has charged" albeit without duration. Don't worry, you only have to type it in once, then copy and paste it (with the appropriate modifications) for the following rounds.

Example: Ebelin Barnahdy (-17/+1, 15ft), 35/67 hp, [7/23 spell levels]; mage armor, greater invisibility (4/9), summoning...

At the end of the fight, you have to state the result of the fight ("Ebelin is the winner") aswell as the rewards he earned ("...and receives 1200 XP and 1400 Gold"). You also have to list all items that are used up. In case of magical expendable items you need to write the caster level behind the name, eg Potion of Cure light wounds [5].

Once the fight has been posted, you should post a link on the Fights of the Week thread and tell us that your fight is up. Don't spoil the outcome! You should check back once in a while for there might be mistakes in the fight or a player has some concerns with it. Mistakes must be corrected; concerns - for example, someone is unhappy the way you ran his character - are basically for you to decide if you want to correct it but it is considered nice if you take these concerns seriously. If there is a definite discrepancy between the tactic and how you ran the gladiator, this must be corrected.

One final thing: Please post the fight in one piece! It makes my work much more difficult if I always have to check back wether it is completed or not. If you cannot run the fight in one piece, better save it on your harddisc in a text file, and continue when you have the time. Thanks!

I may have missed something, but those were the new things that jumped out at me.

Instead of taking up my offer to dispute this interpretation, you've decided to continue to lie and say that I didn't follow your tactics and I'm not following the rules.

Obviously you've decided to take it upon yourself to put a bug in Pitlords's ear to whine about the dice rolls and now want to continue complaining about your loss because you haven't bothered to read my posts. Why shouldn't Barthleby keep him in LOS the whole time. Lotarvos has a speed of 50ft, Barth has a fly-speed (perfect) of 50ft. If he uses downspeed it is doubled and 100ft. So he could cover a very big range. But even if he'd attacked only once per round, the result wouldn't change, the hits come only later.
If Lortavos just breaks the line the whole time, Barthleby could ready a move-action to follow after his attacks.

This appears to be a piece of silver or gold jewelry used to fasten a cloak or cape. In addition to this mundane task, it can absorb magic missiles of the sort generated by spell or spell-like ability. A brooch can absorb up to 101 points of damage from magic missiles before it melts and becomes useless.

Faint abjuration; CL 1st; Craft Wondrous Item, shield; Price 1,500 gp.

Why doesn't it take up a slot? This ability isn't mentioned in the discription. Is there any errata?

I agree totally. However, being caught in a grapple stops movement--in this case, "being hit puts you into a condition which you cannot do the thing you wanted to do." You cannot stand up from prone while in a grapple, it's not one of the listed options. Arguably you could do it with the "move" grapple option, but that would not have been smart.

Sine I'm the one that brought it up, I feel I should chime in to say that I think that's a reasonable call and well within your discretion as a pitlord. I'm not convinced that I agree with you, but that's okay.

Alright...first off...further flaming will not be tolerated.

I did not mention your fight in my post, did I? I already stated that if you did not wish to change it, so be it. I also stated in my post that this information was new to the Rules thread, did I not? And did I not also highlight all of the new information? The paragraph about changes now being required for errors is new...new to me at least. So calling me a liar appears to be incorrect, in my estimation.

In short, while your fight may have been the catalyst for some of these changes, never once did I mention the fight you ran in that post. Quite frankly, I would appreciate it if you would get off my back about it. I have no wish to further discuss the fight, and thought I had already made that readily apparant. If not, then let me be blunt: I may not agree with how you ran it, but it is done and over with and no longer an issue to me. End of line.

Why doesn't it take up a slot? This ability isn't mentioned in the discription. Is there any errata?

Barthleby cant maintain LOS all the time because they have equal speeds. If LOS is broken for even a second, the spiritual weapon 'resets'. This is a serious limitation of the spell that I had tactics set up to utilize. If Barthleby readies to move with Lortavos, he can move at most 50' (You cant do two actions with a ready), which means he cant keep LOS that way either.

And positioning DOES matter for the spiritual weapons, as Lortavos can have cover against them, and via breaking LOS (and given a rather decent hide score, there is no garuntee that Barthleby will regain LOS every round) it uses up rounds where they might have hit.

As far as the brooch goes; I am probably thinking of 3.0 for some reason. That's the only explanation I can have for thinking that this item didn't require a slot; I'll edit Lortavos' sheet and further tactics to list which item he is bringing with him to battle. In round 13, the scorching ray (a ranged touch [5] + 5 = 10) would have hit the blinded/stunned Death (Touch AC 13 (10 + 3 dex) - 2 stunned - 2 blinded = 9).

That might save Drac a few expendables.

Speaking of which...shouldn't Death lose his dex bonus to AC AND give attackers a +2 to hit to boot? That would be a net penalty to AC of -2 (stunned) - 3 (dex) = -5 to AC. Then Drac would garner a +2 bonus to his attack rolls because he is effectively invisible to Death.

So, in reality, Drac should get [5] + 5 + 2 (effectively invisible) = 12 vs. Death's touch AC of 13 = 2 (stunned) - 3 (loss of Dex to AC) = 8.

That's how it should go, right?

Couple of things...when put together could be fight affecting.

In round 11, when I am finally able to deal some damage, the total damage should be 2 higher due to my favored enemy - elf. That would make the total damage 12, rather than 10, leaving Drac with 3 remaining.

In round 17, as per my healing condition (at or below 20 hp), I should be healing. Any roll on that healing roll other than a 1 means I am still alive after the shocking grasp, and can now see my opponent. I should then be able to heal further, as per the same healing condition, until I am above 20 hp or I get killed. With Drac sitting at 3 hp due to the issue in round 11, any further attack that connects will kill with minimum damage since Drac has no way to heal. I would appreciate it if you could extend the fight out based on these issues, since Death healing has a very real chance of changing the outcome.

Jonathon (Abyssal Stalker) vs Tan (Book5) is up here

I hope there is no problems with this one...
Nothing major, some small things that won't affect the outcome.

You have treated Misery a bit strangely. A rider and his mount act simultaneously on the initiative count of the rider. So you don't need to list Jonathon and Misery separately. It makes it easier to run mounted combatants when you don't need to wait for the mounts turn and ready things.

The reason why I used Blindness was actually that I wanted to try how well it works in practice. Blindness is really good since it's effect is permanent and for Jonathon it's important that it has only a Vocal component. Somatic components are difficult for a combat-oriented cleric who uses a shield. Hold person is good, but you get to save it every round. I also try to avoid the most obvious tactic to get an upper hand in fights unless it's the best tactic available.

Otherwise the fight was nicely run, thanks!

Caterane ignored the letter (moving to break LOS) and spirit (using my resources to outlast his resoures) of my tactics, which is not acceptable, in my humble opinion. My character may not have had much of a chance of winning, but he certainly deserves a fairer shake than this.

Sorry, but they don't have equal speed. As mentioned, if B uses downspeed (he needs to sink only 5 feet in his movement), his speed is doubled. Why is readying impossible? You can move and ready to attack (two actions), so you can attack and ready to move to stay in LoS.

But as I said, the results of the attacks will be still the same. The fight will take only a little longer. Do you really want this to be changed?

Pitbull: Readying an action is a standard action, even if it's to move. So you can't attack and ready in the same round.

I havn't read the fight or the tactics so this may not apply....

Couldn't you just find one pillar and run all the way around it on your turn to break LOS? Even if someone readied to follow you, the mechanics of readied actions make it difficult.

Example; it takes 60 ft of movement to go around a cluster of 3 pillars. Player A moves 30 ft from (5,-20) to (5,-23) and breaks LOS. Player B moves down 5 ft and forward 80 ft to a place where he can keep LOS. Player A still has 30 ft of movement to use to break LOS, which can be done at any point around the pillar.

It makes sense that you could fly over someone and continuously follow them, but there is no rule for that.

Again; I didn't read the fight, and I'm not supporting a rerun or anything.

I always wondered at this (to me) very weird interpretation some Pitlords give to the downspeed rule. To me it is obviously nonsense to get double *total movement* when moving only one square (5 ft.) down.

The down speed rule is simply the reverse of the up speed rule: if you go up, you pay double movement *for each square* you fly up, if you fly down, you get double movement *for each square* you go down.

Flight movement logic: up = pay double, down = pay half.

Which effectively means that going up 5 ft. costs 10 ft. of movement, and going down 10 ft. costs only 5 ft. of movement.

You ruling seems to be a literal interpretation that doesn't make sense, and goes against the internal logic of the flight rules.

Oh yes, I missed that first sentence in the discription, my fault. Then attacking and readying isn't possible.

All in all it would not change the result of the fight, because if Cat uses Gonbow's tactic of breaking LOS, Barthleby has to follow Lotarvos the whole time to attack him and will cast more than one SW at the same time. The results of the SW-attacks are allready there, so it takes only longer until the krenshar is finished.

Lotarvos has no chance to damage Barthleby, so I think a rerun isn't necessary. Barthleby isn't afraid of using a lot of expeditures to win this fight as I wrote in the tactics, but I think it's waste of time to fix it.

Ice mephit have perfect flight ability so up-speed is not doubled, I find no rule that says that you have to calculate the speed in 5ft-paces, I've always considered the whole movement. I might be wrong, but I see no rules for that.

Ice mephit have perfect flight ability so up-speed is not doubled, I find no rule that says that you have to calculate the speed in 5ft-paces, I've always considered the whole movement. I might be wrong, but I see no rules for that.

But does it make sense to you that someone with 120 ft. fly speed can fly 120 ft. in a straight line, or 235 ft. when going just 5 ft. down during that flight?

And do you continue your logic with up speed? Do you immediately half all subsequent movement when someone with a Fly spell active flies 5 ft. up?

So pegasi can fly level for 120 ft., but if they fly up 5 ft., they can only fly forward 50 ft.?

It is hard for me to imagine that going 5 ft. down immediately doubles your flying speed, it makes sense to me that fly speed is increased or reduced proportionally to the distance moved. And you don't have to calculate speed in 5 ft. squares to apply that logic, as you seem to be implying that I am suggesting.

I am certainly not saying your wrong! I am saying that the rules allow for multiple interpretations. If the rules allow for both our interpretations, honestly, which of the two interpretations makes more sense to you, mine or yours?
Pittbull

02-26-06, 07:52 AM
Of course your explanation is more logic and I'll accept this ruling of course, but DandD-rules don't base on logic sometimes. I have no problem to calculate each single square for determing the flight-speed, but because up-speed doesn't count double with pefect flight-movement, Barthleby is still in favor of Lotarvos. So it can't be stated that the krenshar can avoid LoS easily.
Caterane

@Gonbow: Your tactic completely lacked a contingency for Barthleby's favorite tactic: flying. You can run away from the spiritual weapons and perhaps prevent some damage (not all; Bart would cast them one after another if you run). And then? What happens if you anyhow survive the SW? You cannot damage Barthleby. You have no chance of winning. That's why I didn't give much thought to your contingency because the fight was lost for you the moment I wrote "Pairings are done" last wednesday.

And I don't know why you request a higher level fight when you auto-lose against any flyer.

PS: And of course, a brooch takes up the neck slot, no questions asked.

@Usurpator: Good ruling on the downward speed. We'll use that from now on.

Vath: I know you did all of Galagith from pieced together tactics, which I commend. I would like to point out a 10hp swing error for reference:

Rnd 7: the brown bear initiates an "improved grab" Improved grab only works on opponents that are one size category smaller than the bear. Since the bear is large and Galagith is large (due to expansion) he can't initate the grapple. This would allow Galagith to make an attack after the bear makes the AoO for moving away.

(also with improved grab you don't get to deal another dose of damage unless the creature has constrict, Improved grap uses very different rules than "Improved Grapple" for starting grapples)

So, a potion of enlarge person lasts 30 rounds, not just 10.Actually, the DMG potions are at caster level 5; however, CoCo rules allow potions to be bought at either minimum caster level or at any caster level listed in the DMG. Since Sdentch spend 250 gp on it, it can be inferred that the potion was CL 5 (not 3, as indicated on the sheet), and therefore had a duration of 50 rounds.

Also, there's a new-ish CoCo rule that says that all rolls should be annotated into the body of the fight text, for ease of error-checking. It was impossible to follow this fight's rolls without constantly switching back and forth with IC.

At the very least, SNA animals will attack any opponents without any instruction. Also, if an animal knows the "guard" trick it will, without any use of Handle Animal, attack anyone who attacks its master. However, I will stand by you regarding Tricks animals performing other tricks without Handle Animal--all they should do is follow their masters around and attack anyone who is threatening them.

RE:

SEE THIS QUOTE:

Don't know if that helps, to be honest I'm butting in whithout actually knowing what you're talking about.

We're discussing whether animals can understand common.

Think about it this way. A heavy warhorse is thrown from the bag. Warhorses don't speak common, so telling it what to do isn't an option. Your only choice is to use Handle Animal to persuade the creature into doing what you want it to do. (Only a DC 10)

The other option is following the spell Summon Nature's Ally, is that the animal attacks your opponents to the best of its ability. This doesn't work with the Heavy Warhorse, or most of the gray bag.

My thoughts are on option 1 being correct.

This small sack appears normal and empty. However, anyone reaching into the bag feels a small, fuzzy ball. If the ball is removed and tossed up to 20 feet away, it turns into an animal. The animal serves the character who drew it from the bag for 10 minutes (or until slain or ordered back into the bag), at which point it disappears. It can follow any of the commands described in the Handle Animal skill. Each of the three kinds of a bag of tricks produces a different set of animals. Use the following tables to determine what animals can be drawn out of each.

The heavy warhorse appears with harness and tack and accepts the character who drew it from the bag as a rider.

I missed that. Well I guess I'm wrong about that one. Makes you wonder if any of the other animals from the bag (aside from the Warhorse) count as domesticated. I'd say no. *Shrug* but others will probably claim that any trained animal is a domestic animal even if it's a rino or bear.

None the less these creatures will know the "Heel" trick and a HA check (and a move action) would be needed to make them follow. They would attack anyone who attacked the person they serve as per the "Defend" trick, but only if the attack happened in a way they could see the attacker and the owner being attacked.

Another minor point is that in Samuel's tactics he describes instructing the beasts to seek and attack. Unfortunately an animal can only be instructed to perform one trick at a time. The creature would seek, but not attack unless also instructed to do so at a later time when it could see what its supposto attack.

Part of my point in the fight thread is that the Summon Natures Ally spell indicates that the spell caster has an unusual method for communicating with the summoned creatures. That spell also includes language to indicate that the summoned creatures will automaticially attack the casters enemies (this is unusual for animals to do). This is not mentioned in the description of the bag of tricks. By default we must use the normal methods of instructing the creatures to take the desired actions. Sam must use the HA skill and the tricks listed there.

Sorry about that Lonewolf, I just saw that the HA skill was trained-only and I didn't read farther down at the bottom of the skill.

Tueor vs Dr. Hexacious Pogboomer is up. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8569144&postcount=299)

It was a close one. I had to make 2 judgment calls for Tueor as he did not account for summons.

@MysticMonk

If you feel attacking the scorpions instead of chasing the Dr. isn't fair, then PM me about it. I feel that grappling the doctor while a scorpion hits you a lot wouldn't be a good combo.

Grick vs Samuel is up.

Not much for Grik to do in this battle... Sorry Snommlep, your tactics didn't breakdown untill it was too late.

Maybe suprisingly, I wont argue about this ruling. I dont know if youre right or not, but if this is the way it will be ruled in the future, I will just gain a cross class rank with the new level I just gained. But I really think there are other characters out there that use the bag of tricks without handle animal, so I will take this to the Ask an Elder Thread anyway.

That is my problem with this fight. No matter what I say, write or ask you to do, you don't even give my character a chance. That is not an acceptable way to pitlord things, from my perspective.

Since it is clear that you are not going to listen to me, I'll let this alone and chalk it up to a difference in philoshopy.

double check stuff here. I think it is right but I have been known to make mistakes
Looks fine to me. Just one small mistake in the rewards section. Cyra earns 200gp for PSI (not 180gp) :D

Thanks for running the fight. I will make appropriate additions to Cyra's sheet regarding the different mindblade damage's.

I just checked the SRD regarding mithril and shields and it seems that you are right. There is nothing that specifically indicates that a change in type with regards to shields and special materials. A mithril heavy shield is still considered a heavy shield, not a light shield. :(

@Macbrea, CEF guild:

I would only point that, perhaps, the CEF tax should be 220 gp (instead of 200 gp).

This because CEF guild now has a stable, so this raises taxes from 10% to 11%, but I'm not sure that this apply also to Feb22 fights.

Any confirm?

Vath: I know you did all of Galagith from pieced together tactics, which I commend. I would like to point out a 10hp swing error for reference:And I would like to commend you back for looking out for Iced, since he isn't here to defend himself.

Rnd 7: the brown bear initiates an "improved grab" Improved grab only works on opponents that are one size category smaller than the bear. Since the bear is large and Galagith is large (due to expansion) he can't initate the grapple. This would allow Galagith to make an attack after the bear makes the AoO for moving away.Huh... If I would have known that I would have requested new tactics, since that was most of Sdentch's strategy. I'll go fix that, though it might not make TheMagister happy.

(also with improved grab you don't get to deal another dose of damage unless the creature has constrict, Improved grap uses very different rules than "Improved Grapple" for starting grapples)That isn't quite right. When you use improved grab you can choose to start a grapple normally or use a special 'hold' ability. If you use the hold ability you do constrict damage, but if you choose a normal grapple it seems to work normally.
Improved Grab (Ex): If a creature with this special attack hits with a melee weapon (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. No initial touch attack is required. Unless otherwise noted, improved grab works only against opponents at least one size category smaller than the creature. The creature has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply use the part of its body it used in the improved grab to hold the opponent. If it chooses to do the latter, it takes a –20 penalty on grapple checks, but is not considered grappled itself; the creature does not lose its Dexterity bonus to AC, still threatens an area, and can use its remaining attacks against other opponents. A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature also has the constrict special attack. If the creature does not constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that established the hold. Otherwise, it deals constriction damage as well (the amount is given in the creature’s descriptive text). When a creature gets a hold after an improved grab attack, it pulls the opponent into its space. This act does not provoke attacks of opportunity. It can even move (possibly carrying away the opponent), provided it can drag the opponent’s weight.
Also, there's a new-ish CoCo rule that says that all rolls should be annotated into the body of the fight text, for ease of error-checking. It was impossible to follow this fight's rolls without constantly switching back and forth with IC.I saw that earlier in the thread. I've run fights for Iced and Magister before, and they were both okay with skiming invisible castle, so I assumed it would be cool this week. I'll post the numbers from now on.

Gonbow, please tell me how you want to defeat Barthleby.
Well, since I had lost against a character, who was unable to hurt me in the same way, too, I can answer that: Avoid/resist any attacks from above (with 50ft movement and deflect arrows, this looks managable), and than defeat him in melee.
How can Barthleby harm Lortavos? Spiritual Weapon? Lortavos moves away, so that's only one attack per weapon (plus Lortavos could probably take a full defence each turn without problem, he does not even have to double move to get behind (full) cover with that movement). The bow? As I said, deflect arrows. The arcane scrolls look serious, but without the magic missles, the Acid Arrow and the Scorching ray have to hit, first. And - if Barthleby wants to win that way, he has to pay for it. :) I an see Lortavos surviving all Barthleby's ranged attacks.

...However, I don't think, that the (probably) wounded Lortavos could beat Barthleby in melee, but that should be no reason to simply have him do suicide. (Or to mock him for fighting in a higher league)
Caterane

02-27-06, 10:58 AM
A'right, I'll do it and I apologize to Gonbow for mocking to fight in a higher league. Was more meant as something to consider.

Still, 18 rounds of spiritual weapon, summon swarm, and all the other spells vs Lortavos who cannot really heal is in my opinion a very one-sided fight but if you request that Bart has to pay for his victory, well, then so be it. I don't want to have anyone telling me I gave him a free win.

I'll edit the fight tomorow.

Drinking a potion or using an oil on an item of gear is a standard action. The potion or oil takes effect immediately. Using a potion or oil provokes attacks of opportunity. A successful attack (including grappling attacks) against the character forces a Concentration check (as for casting a spell). If the character fails this check, she cannot drink the potion. An enemy may direct an attack of opportunity against the potion or oil container rather than against the character. A successful attack of this sort can destroy the container

There are some errors in the fight.

1. According to Invisible Castle, Gundir started in the South box.
2. That means I didn't double move, so no -4 penalty to shoot. Also, where he started means I have LOS to him and not to dog. No cover bonus to AC. The attack hits, and Gundir dies.
3. Summon spells take 1 round to cast, not a standard action.

Anyways, to sum it up. In the first round Ajora would've spotted Gundir in the South box, with no cover between them. He would've fired an arrow(24 to hit), and only needed to hit a FF AC of 22. The damage was 64.

@Kaigan

In any circumstance where Gundir can outlast the first round or 4, he would beat Ajora almost every time. But going just by the rolls Ajora was the victor this day. Tell me what you think.

Summon Nature's Ally takes a full round to cast => The Hippogriffs cannot appear in round 2 but arrive in round 3. This delay will give Ajora time to move further away and perhaps not get surrounded in round 3 (and some more shots if he is taking them).

From the notes the starting boxes are correct. E for Ajora, +2 in a CW direction for Gundir =W.

From reading the rolls, I say that the starting positions are correct. YOu must look at the description of the roll.

So for you.... he rolled a 1d4 with the description of 1=N, 2=E, 3=S, 4=W. You rolled a 2, so you start east.

Then for me he rolled a 1d3, with the description of count clockwise, meaning that he went around 2 boxes in a clockwise manner, so if it was a 1, it would be south, if a 2, would be west, and 3 is north. That's the convention he used. So I would start in the west box, meaning you would get the -4 to attack, and I had time to get my Force screen up, so you would have needed a 20 to hit me.

That's how I read it. But then again the only way I could have won this fight is by luck, and I guess Gundir is lucky

Yes, the starting box is correct. 2 for E to Ajora, count 2 clockwise is W for Gundir.

Indeed, casting SNA is a full round action, I will have to correct that. But I don't thing that would change much, because, as per Ajora's tactics, he would spend this extra round shoting at the dog from the position he was (he had cover there, and that was the intention).

I will edit the fight later before start running the next one.

Not gonna chew you out (not really).

However, I am now compelled to search for 1 HP of damage so I can knock out galagith before he does Sdentch in.

And I found it, I think:

Final Sdentch attack (from prone) in invisibile castle is listed as 1d8+10. Now, you rolled max damage on the d8, but Sdentch's Str while enlarged is 26 (+8). Therefore, she deals 2d6+12 with an enlarged longspear.

You kind've applied an increase because of the strength (you changed 18 to 19 damage), but you forgot about the two-handedness of the longspear.

So, Sdentch is owed a 2d6 reroll of damage (and needs a 9 or better) and needs a +12 modifier added to that roll.

There's your extra damage.

Put THAT in your acid-filled maw and smoke it, Dragon!

Looks good. I didn't think that Morgan would fly above Telveran and negate his cover. Very risky if Telveran happened to do a flying charge (upto 80') and grapple. I was expecting Morgan to use more of his spell levels which would have made this a much harder fight for Telveran. Using AlterSelf spell and Telveran would need a 20 to hit which would buy much more time to wear through all of Telveran's hp.

Morgan also used a potion of CSW.

Nice catch.

Unfortunately uou rolled an 8 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=375999). So, Galagith is knocked to disabled. He swings anyway, which pushes him to unconcious. His rage ends, putting him at -9. Then Sdentch's rage ends, which kills her. Then, 1 init count later, Galagith bleeds and dies.

So, so, close.

Now in theory, Galagith could just step back and drink CLW. Then Sdentch would stand and drink CLW. Then after 2-4 rounds of healing, rages would be over and there could be a round 2; but I really don't want to do that.

Because this fight is so close, I feel compelled to mention a couple of things.

In round 13, when Galagith is brought to disabled, he can only take a move action or a standard action. Galagith could not both draw and drink a potion...spending the move action to draw the potion would put him unconscious.

However, in round 14, Sdentch still has an action to take before her rage wears off. Drawing and drinking a potion is definitely allowed and feasible there. Considering the damage dealt from Galagith's last blow (27), when compared to the HP available to Sdentch (33 total), this last blow puts Sdentch at 6 hp. When Sdentch's rage wears off, she will drop to -10 exactly. Any kind of healing done in Sdentch's action before her rage wears off changes the outcome of this battle, because this will put Galagith at -9 with one chance to stabalize, while Sdentch would still be bleeding out even with a minimum roll on a CLW potion. In a fight this close, I think that Sdentch would use that last round to heal, rather than do nothing, as the fight is currently listed. Then it becomes a question of whether Galagith stabalizes in the one roll he has to do so.

It's no big deal Niqil.

He had Sdentch full attack from prone instead of drinking a potion, so its not like Sdentch did NOTHING. She just missed. Twice. BADLY.

It was his call as the pitlord, and I'm not contesting it.

If I had been there personally, yeah, it would've been the "best thing to do", but I wasn't. I sent Vath a PM about some other stuff, and that might convince him to make Sdentch a little "smarter" about her choice of actions that last round.

But I won't complain if he doesn't. I only mention grievous tactical deviations or numerical mistakes anymore...it makes my life a lot happier.

You misunderstand....I am talking about the round after you attack from prone. Let me quote:

Round 14
Sdentch stops raging and becomes fatigued. She is immediately reduced to -10 hp and dies.

Galagith bleeds and dies.

You still have an action in this round (above) before your rage ends. Drawing and drinking a potion here instead of doing nothing (like it is currently written) will almost certainly change the outcome of this battle, because Galagith has once chance at a stabilization roll before he dies, regardless of how many points you actually get out of the potion. The bare minimum CLW potion would give 2 points, putting you at -8, and him at -9. He gets one roll to stabilize, or he dies and you win at -9 hit points.

Aw hell. I annotate the end of round summary wrong. The rage does end at the end of the action instead of the begining. Sdentch did just stand still for a full round before dying.

He had Sdentch full attack from prone instead of drinking a potion, so its not like Sdentch did NOTHING. She just missed. Twice. BADLY.The reason I skiped the potion on that attack was because with Galagith's 3d6+16 damage, clw dosn't mean too much. But this is something different.... I'll go check it out.

You misunderstand....I am talking about the round after you attack from prone. Let me quote:

You still have an action in this round (above) before your rage ends. Drawing and drinking a potion here instead of doing nothing (like it is currently written) will almost certainly change the outcome of this battle, because Galagith has once chance at a stabilization roll before he dies, regardless of how many points you actually get out of the potion. The bare minimum CLW potion would give 2 points, putting you at -8, and him at -9. He gets one roll to stabilize, or he dies and you win at -9 hit points.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

{breathless anticipation!}

Well, here it is.

Sdench dodges an attack of opportunity and gets the potion down.
Galagith bleeds and dies on the next round. Sdentch bleeds and dies four rounds later.

Man I hate close fights.

Now everybody make sure there isn't another problem, before I go and tell Pitlords that the outcome changed again.... :shifty:

*shrugs* His instructions were to stay away from you. Since you weren't flying, I figured being 50' above your head fulfilled that requirement. You're right though, it would have been quite risky if you had intended to fly. Ah well, thats a matter of interpretation I suppose since he didn't give any particular distance to stay at, and doesn't matter with the way it turned out.

And thanks for pointing that out - CSW potion added to Morgan's used items section.

Lunoria vs Famine (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8576749&postcount=304) is up!

My creativity in naming martial arts attacks was strained to the limit here. Its a low limit, but then again Im pretty tired at the moment :)

Some errors I want to point out....none need fixing unless something else does, since they are in my favor.

1) Famine should have always had his shield on, since it is a buckler. His AC should have been 19 the entire battle. A wand can still be used in that hand no problem. That's also the reason I wield my weapons one-handed...using them two-handed causes the loss of the buckler's shield bonus to AC.

2) The reason the Combat Mastery is struck through on my sheet is because it can only be used in light or no armor....I am in medium armor, and have no plans to go lighter (in fact, I will be crafting full plate with this win).

3) As you mentioned, you forgot to use the corrected modifier I mentioned that I had as an error on my sheet.

Eraca (Zevox) vs. Tai-Rath'os (malakaiunseen) is up HERE. Another short fight.
Looks good. The luck with those failure rolls is incredible indeed. I've realized since sending the tactics though that True Strike has only verbal components, so the armor shouldn't hinder it. No need to put that in (especially since her shot in the next round hit and downed him anyway), but I thought I'd mention it. I think I'll need to list components for my spells with Eraca from now on so theres no confusion on either end as to what needs to be checked for with the armor.

Only thing to note is the items used: nothing big, just that since the scroll of shield never went off Eraca didn't use it, and her used arrow isn't listed. Thanks for running the fight :) .

@Iced

I'm sorry to hear that, I hope her life was full and rich.

@Nickbeat

Congratulations, your first child?

I've looked over the Xander vs Sappho fight and I don't see anything worth changing in the fight itself; you mislabled alot of actions, but as far as I can see didn't actually allow any more actions than one of us would normally have, so it's just a typo.

Would you mind adding Xander's crafting money to his earnings for the fight? (60 gp). Also, could you note that TAO (The Arcane Order) earns 30 gp from the fight as well.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee. Looks good.

Only thing I noticed was that the AoO with the ranseur should be a disarm attempt. Won't change the fight, especially with all those bad rolls. :(

*grumble* I thought I would have time Saturday, and I worked, I was supposed to get off at 6 today and they held me over. Looks like my fight is either going to be late or held over. I'm sorry, fighters, but my work(2nd week on the job) has screwed me over for time when they were supposed to this week. Anyone wants the fight, I'll go post the tactics and character sheets in here and you can just quote them.

Darkvision out to to 90 feet.
Stonecunning: This ability grants a dwarf a +2 racial bonus on Search checks to notice unusual stonework, such as sliding walls, stonework traps, new construction (even when built to match the old), unsafe stone surfaces, shaky stone ceilings, and the like. Something that isn’t stone but that is disguised as stone also counts as unusual stonework. A dwarf who merely comes within 10 feet of unusual stonework can make a Search check as if he were actively searching, and a dwarf can use the Search skill to find stonework traps as a rogue can. A dwarf can also intuit depth, sensing his approximate depth underground as naturally as a human can sense which way is up. Dwarves have a sixth sense about stonework, an innate ability that they get plenty of opportunity to practice and hone in their underground homes.
Weapon Familiarity: Dwarves treat dwarven waraxes and dwarven urgroshes as martial weapons, rather than exotic weapons.
Stability: Dwarves are exceptionally stable on their feet. A dwarf has a +4 bonus on ability checks made to resist being bull rushed or tripped when standing on the ground (but not when climbing, flying, riding, or otherwise not standing firmly on the ground).
+3 racial bonus on saving throws against poison.
+3 racial bonus on saving throws against spells and spell-like effects.

OK, Boraxx will start in the front of his startingbox, mounted on Lara. She doesn't wear her barding (her encumbrance is only light!). In his hands there is his lance.

Hopefully Boraxx wins the ini, the he charges (fleet of feet + spurring) to one of the next starting-boxes and attacks into the pace behind the L of the left front corner of the starting-box. He tries to deliver maximum damage.

Perhaps I'm lucky and Silver is in the starting-box, using the same starting-position as against the TFH.

Then draw a powerstone of force-screen and wait until the first attack has hit him. If it has been entangle, try to break out. If not manifest force-screen (has no psi-crafted, therefor she doesn't know what he has manifested, but might use her dispel ability, don't use touch-sight until she has used dispel magic).
I hope she uses dispel-magic soon, then use powerstone of touchsight and draw powerstone of entangling ectoplasm. After she is hit by the goo, draw tanglefootbag and try to hit her again and she might miss the save against DC15 and is unable to fly, if yes get close and grapple her delivering damage with the cold-iron armor-spikes.
If this tactic hasn't worked out manifest offensive, prescience and hit her with the bow (1d8+5 damage).

If touch sight has been dispelled (I really hope not), you can try to hit her with a bag of flour.

Of course you can use his healing-potions.

This will be a pretty difficult fight to run, I don't want to let Boraxx surrender and make it a expensive fight for her. The pig-rider shouldn't be defeated easily.

Thanks for running the fight, have fun.

If you have any questions, just contyct me per PM.

Thanks,

Start invisible and in the back center of my square. Drop a critter from the bag of tricks ordering it to attack and ascend to max height.
Send Hothead out on high sentry to keep watch. He is to stay out of 60' touchsight range if possible.
After the critter is in play, ascend and hide. Stay out of 60' touchsight range/LOE. Use hide and cover to avoid direct detection. Do not get into entangling ectoplasm range either.
Buff with Mage armor then Shield from memory.
Descend only to set another critter for him and then do it by double moving away from him if needed. Note that I only have to drop to 20' to drop a critter.
His only cold iron that I saw was the armor spikes and as a flyer I have no intention of ever being anywhere near them. On a max dmg bow shot he can hurt me, but I am not overly concerned about that.
If four critters are insufficient, use the wand of magic missiles, but priority is given to avoiding detection and range. I am willing to see run actions as needed for this.
Have fun and catch me via PM or IM if you have questions.

That said, if no one takes this I should get to it in about 6-8 hours, or Tuesday afternoon(GMT-6). Either someone runs it real quick-like or it'll be late, but it should still be in time to update your characters. I apologize again, but I am the FNG at work(f'ing new guy) and as such I have to stay over when they need someone and so forth. Not to mention my migraine problems, which I think everyone on this board knows about now. Anyway, sorry for the late fight, it'll get done this week, I think. I'll do my best if no one else takes over, I know you two would appreciate it.

Thanks for being understanding(I hope =-P),

My bad. I interpreted clockwise as starting again from North. I knew fighting Gundir would be chancy, as Ajora is designed to be a 1-trick pony. I rolled poorly. What can I do?

Zevox

I always forget to look at the components of the spell... You mentioned in your tactics, so I assumed it had somatic components, but didn't check to be sure...

I don't know for sure, but I think if you fail the arcane spell failure check, the spell is lost (spell slot spend, or scroll used anyway...). If someone point me out that this is wrong, I'll fix the used items. I didn't list the arrow because you recover it, but I think it's better list it to avoid confusion...

@Drac: Your map creator is not working properly for the Dungeon fights. It will only show the red dots for me, and not any of the other colours.

There's a couple errors.

Round 4: One of the actions (either loading crossbow or putting the bolts in a more appropriate place) should be in round 3, meaning round 3 at most Perius can only move 5 feet.

Round 4 Error #2: Enervation does NOT prevent the power from going off. What it does is daze the wilder, prevent euphoria from occuring from that attempt (but doesn't cancel previous euphoria triggers), and drain the Wilder PP = to the Wilder's power level. So you'll need to roll for Cha damage, but since they're hyenas I think they're fine.

Which means Perius probably dies faster due to lack of concealment.

And yeah, you're right, I didn't think of getting swarmed. That was mostly because I had to guess what it was and guessed 2 zombies and 2 hell hounds. :) In hindsight I should have said to check for being spotted, then haul ass far far away.

Hey guys I'm really strapped for time.

I didn't expect some things to happen, like going home, or my girlfriend falling really ill, so I had to take care of her.

Can someone take Featylec vs. Finrod. The tactics are below. My other fights will be up tomorrow sometime, hopefully morning/midday.

Thanks for whoever takes this.

Sent to Kaigan and lonewolf:

For his free action, Featylec is stealing 150 gp worth of items from his opponent. His Open Locks check succeeds (+12 vs DC 8), and he can steal up to 153 gp worth of items. Since Finrod has so blasted many of most of his scrolls, he opts to take his five scrolls of Mage Armor (value: 125 gp) and his scroll of reduce person (value: 25 gp), total value 150 gp. Finrod gets these back after the fight, but cannot use them during it.

...Not that it'll help much, all things considered, but hes got to try and give the Hewer of Caves a hard time, right? After all, whichever one of us wins this match hits ECL 4, and Featylec's been ECL 3 for way too long .

Zevox

and... tactics

Start front and one space off of the center (so the rock won’t impede my run) of my starting square holding my bow and a potion of shield of faith.

General idea: Try to catch him with a Thunderstone and bring him down with arrow shots.

Round 1: Run to the center of the arena.
Round 2: Drink potion, draw a thunderstone.
Round 3+: Circle central pillar, trying to see or hear Finrod. Hide and move silently (half-speed when I can reach a spot where I can see a new portion of the arena), and ready to throw the thunderstone upon hearing or seeing him (depending on how good my listen check turns out, you may need to roll a random location to see if the stone lands within 10’ of him or not to affect him). If I see his familiar coming towards me, drop the stone and shoot it, then once it falls pick the stone back up and resume.

Round X+: Once the stone is off, things get hectic. I want to shoot down his familiar if I ever see it doing anything other than sitting on his shoulder – that’s the highest-priority tactic. Beyond that, try to hide and snipe, preferably from within 30’ for sneak attacks. Try to rehide after a snipe attack, making bluff checks to distract him so that I can hide without the -20 penalty. If hes still invisible, ready to fire upon hearing him (if I don’t pinpoint, roll a random location from those possible).

Notes:
- Always apply dodge bonus vs his familiar when possible unless it dies, in which case apply it vs Finrod.
- Shield of Faith’s deflection bonus puts my touch ac at 18 (including dodge).
- The Warfare Alliance gets 10% income from Featylec: 90 gp on a win, 30 gp on a loss. It’d be appreciated if this was included in the wrap-up.

Contingencies:
- If by some miracle I start with LoS to him in round 1, drop the potion, move 30’ towards him while drawing a thunderstone, and toss the thunderstone (should auto-hit, since even if I miss his square’s AC of 5 he’ll still be in the 10’ radius of the stone regardless of where it lands). If I can’t get within 100’ (max distance on the stone) of him in one move, instead drop the potion and shoot him with an arrow, then in the following rounds shoot his familiar if it moves and otherwise him, tossing a thunderstone as soon as I get in range, then use Round X tactics.
- If for some reason he opts not to go invisible, just toss the stone once I spot him and continue to the hide-and-seek shoot out. Shooting his familiar if it makes a move is still highest-priority tactic.
- If I’m blinded, surrender. My odds of victory will be so low at this point that continuing isn’t worth it.

Anyway, thanks for running the fight. This is one of the worst match-ups Featylec could’ve pulled. I don’t expect to win, but hes going to try his hardest regardless. Have fun (if that’s possible with Featylec’s matches ).

Zevox

and

Hi

Finrod will start in the back of his box with a scroll of invisibility in his hand.

Round 1: Cast invisibility from scroll move forward.

Round 2: Cast Silent Image from Memory. Make an Image of myself 5ft behind me. If I can already see him, skip this.

Round 3+: Move around the arena and keep the Image 5ft behind me.

As soon as I can see him (maybe he attacked the image) drop concentration on the image and cast Blindness on him. If he saves, move into cover.

Whether if he saves or not, cast Ghoul Touch and designate Labra to deliver the touch. If he is blind, I move also close to him and draw the scythe on the way. If he is not blind draw a scroll of Ray of Enfeeblement and close in anyway.

If Ghoul Touch succeeds, use Scythe to CDG him.

If he is blind, but not paralyzed, draw the bow and kill him with it. Negate any cover he has.

If he resists both spells use the scroll of Ray of Enfeeblement and try to kill him with the bow

Thanks again for whoever takes this and sorry to my gladiators.

@Gonbow: another note on the FFA; the statues block LOS the same way that the pillars do in the regular arena. So in the first round Auburn wouldn't have LOS until she cast polymorph and was tall enough to see over the statues. Dosn't change anything, just thought I would point it out.
Myrridin

02-28-06, 09:13 AM
*shrugs* His instructions were to stay away from you. Since you weren't flying, I figured being 50' above your head fulfilled that requirement. You're right though, it would have been quite risky if you had intended to fly. Ah well, thats a matter of interpretation I suppose since he didn't give any particular distance to stay at, and doesn't matter with the way it turned out.

And thanks for pointing that out - CSW potion added to Morgan's used items section.

Zevox

I thought I put contingent tactics in there stating to Dispel Magic if Telveran was flying, just because I didn't want to get in to melee.

That said, I should've used more spells to weaken Telveran more. *sigh* This is why I prefer quests over arena fights, I'm much better at adapting to those situations, rather than writing out tactics.

I have no problem with the fight...I'm just hoping I get the dice luck some day with Morgan. :)

Gonbow,

I was reading over my opponent's tactics carefully and I realized that there is a detail that you need to keep track of carefully. Auburn's sharing the polymorph spell with his familiar, so they can at no time be more than 5' apart or else the familiare's spell is lost. Since the familiar cannot ride on Auburn when it is larger than he is, and Auburn's not going to ride the Remoraz, there movement must be happening as two seperate creatures at two different points in the initiative sequence. To ensure that the 5' range is never broaken they have a very limited movement. It is not an option for the familiare to follow Auburn around, because as soon as Auburn moves more than 5' away from the familiar it starts its turn outside of the range of a shared spell and it is no longer a Remoraz and instead it's a familiar again (the spell is broaken and does not come back if the familiar moves into range again.). This wil be of critical importance.

Auburn can cast the spell on his familiar, or on himself and the range limitation is not a problem, but he cannot share a single casting without having a serious limitation on his ability to move around the battle field. Shakari ran into a simular problem a long time ago with charing buffs with her croc.

True enough; this movement can be corrected by one or the other of them readying to move with the other, but any kind of vigorous movement will be ill-advised.

Luckily for Auburn, the 5' doesn't have to be in the cardinal directions and can be up/down; which makes good use of the Remorhaz's ability to burrow and go underneath Auburn. It'll be a bit of a logistics nightmare though... anyways, I'm back and running the fight.

Wow, it's hard to follow marching orders or hold a formation; it must be tough to be a commander.

I guess the Rockettes just say, "Ready to kick when the girl to my left kicks," then the girl on the end kicks, and the whole thing works out. Except that readied actions go before the originating action, so actually the line kicks right to left even though it started on the left.

I know - like I said, I just realized this as well, so its really more my fault as yours. Just figured I'd mention it for future references if nothing else.

I've always been under the impression that only memorized spells were lost entirely when an armor failure roll failed, but I can't seem to find anything in the SRD backing up that impression (nor anything contradicting it either though...). Anyone know whats what here?

As for the arrow, that'd be nice, but arrows that hit are automatically lost. Only misses can be recovered.

Soo...umm...when did we start allowing the effects of a shared spell to affect a caster and his familiar differently? Shouldn't both Auburn and the familiar be polymorphed into the same creature? That would be like allowing a shared Resist Energy spell to protect against fire on Auburn and cold on the familiar...am I the only one that sees an issue with that?

2 things:

1. All the arrows that missed might be recoverable
2. In my tactics I stated to ride away behind cover to escape summons so could shoot them from a distance or drink Invisibility. You had me just stand there and die. My mount has a 90ft movement, and with a Withdraw action it puts me out of reach of the hippogriffs, since they cannot change directions as easily with only an average fly maneuverability. It won't change the fight(unless I got the chance to re-buff), but it feels silly to watch my character accept death so easily when my tactics accounted for summoning.

You're right. Cannot be done. Sharing a spell is exactly that. Same thing with dismissing it. You cannot dismiss a spell upon yourself while leaving it on your familiar. That's one of the reasons the infamous Pun-Pun is not possible(in the way it is written, and the the extent of power as well).

1. I may be wrong, but the SRD says that "Masterwork ammunition is damaged (effectively destroyed) when used" and "All magic weapons are automatically considered to be of masterwork quality", so I think that magic ammunition used is destroyed.
2. Yes, but since Ajora has no Spellcraft he has no way to know that Gundir is summoning. When the summons came, Ajora was already surrounded, so I did what I though would be your best bet: to become invisible. I agree it was a very small chance, but withdrwaing would be worst IMO because you would have to keep running and would have no chance to fire at all.

I havent' read the fight in question here, but I remember seeing a fight before where the wizard changed into a remorhaz and had his familiar do the same. If you share polymorph with your familiar wouldn't the familiar be limited to transforming into a creature with a number of HD equal to the familiars? It just seems really broken to me if you let a familiar take a shape as powerful as that of the caster.

@ Gonbow: I did some digging on polymorphing, and what I found is probably going to change your fight some....I went and looked at the RotG articles you referred to.

First, in regard to the familiar being able to polymorph via sharing the spell:

The form the subject assumes can't have Hit Dice of more than your caster level, or the subject's own Hit Dice (whichever is lower) to a maximum of 15 Hit Dice.

A form's Hit Dice refers to its racial Hit Dice, as noted in Part Two.

So the familiar is limited to what it can polymorph into by it's actual hit dice, in this case. So the familiar turning into a remorhaz doesn't work.

Second, in regard to being able to chose different effects for caster and familiar (i.e. different creatures to turn into):

If you have a familiar, mount, or other companion with the share spells ability, you can change both yourself and your familiar or companion. Your familiar or companion must be within 5 feet at the time of casting to receive the effect, and it stops affecting the familiar or companion if it moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the familiar or companion again even if it returns to you before the spell's duration expires. You choose a form for yourself and for your familiar or companion. The forms you choose don't have to be the same.

It appears you are correct about being able to choose different forms with the shared spell. However, the familiar is still limited by it's actual hit die (as in my first point), so it would not be able to use a remorhaz. This is probably going to have a big effect on your fight, since Kracknol was hurt pretty severely by the familiar.

The HD of the familiar is equal to the caster level.

Normally that is true, however in this case Skip specifically states that it is actual hit dice, not hit dice based on the caster.

the only Rule in the SRd I see on the matter is this one

Familiar Basics

Use the basic statistics for a creature of the familiar’s kind, but make the following changes:
Hit Dice

For the purpose of effects related to number of Hit Dice, use the master’s character level or the familiar’s normal HD total, whichever is higher.

Since you've already read the article, I'll refrain from spamming the board with more quotes. But it is my opinion that for Polymorph, the Familiar is treated as having 7 hit dice. Wether or not it should be is another matter.

As far as the polymorph spell wearing off once the summoner is unconcious; it doesn't have a duration of concentration and I don't see any caveat of this nature in Alter Self (the root spell) or Polymorph (the specific spell). Perhaps this was present in earlier copies of the spell/3.0? If it were still applicable, yes it would likely change the fight radically.

Can a cleric with magic domain cast arcane scrolls whose caster level is higher than 1/2 his cleric level?

The description of Magic Domain from the SRD:
Use scrolls, wands, and other devices with spell completion or spell trigger activation as a wizard of one-half your cleric level (at least 1st level). For the purpose of using a scroll or other magic device, if you are also a wizard, actual wizard levels and these effective wizard levels stack.

It seems like a 2nd level cleric with Magic domain shouldn't be able to activate a scroll of Fly (caster level 5).

I see this happening in fights though where Pitlords are allowing them to make caster level checks. I guess the description does say 'Use scrolls, ... etc.. as a wizard of 1/2 your cleric level'... Thoughts?

Can you explain why the 2nd level cleric shouldn't be able to activate the scroll in the same way a 1st level wizard could (i.e., by making the caster level check and having the appropriate ability score)? I don't see anything in what you quoted that would prevent it.

But looks like there is still some polymorphing-stuff. My :twocents::

-The spell works depencing on the familiars virtual hit dies (=your level), like any spell.

-Spells don't end, when the caster falls unconcious (only when she dies).

-I would not agree with Skip, that you can choose two diffrent forms - but as long as there is nothing oficial about this, we need to take that in the CoCo.

Hm, looks like everything is okay, in fact.

Yeah, when Feradeth went retreating and drawing the wand, you and sandwhiched Evaine on the other side, she had no choice but to attack you. 2 things
- in round two Auburn casts black tentacles on... nothing? I know the tactics said don't cast it on Kraknol if he's flying, since he would be out of range, but wouldn't that kind of apply to either one of them? My bad for writing my tactics too fast.
- Although Auburn went unconcious first, didn't Kraknol die first? I'm okay with being in 3rd place, but I thought winners were based on death, not incapacitation. If it's incapacitation, then I've been doing all my fights wrong.

2 nit-picky pointless things
-Auburn's a female wizard, not a male bard (ok, you got the gender right, but it seems like everyone gets it messed up.)
-didn't have any free activities. Auburn just does a full activity every other week. I'll put a note on the sheet though, to stop further confusion.

Gonbow,

I haven't had the time to look at the movements to ensure that at every point in time the Remoraz was within 5' of the Hag(not just within natural reach, but actually have less than 5' of distance between the spaces of these creatures) but assuming that is the case... in Kracknol's tactics I asked to use Expansion before flying, and also to use Grip of Iron if grappled. Had both of these been used, the grapple attempt would have failed to grapple Kracknol. Please review that and see if it's possible to include the parts of my tactics that are relevant to the grapple check. Also I don't think you got the damage quite right on Kracknol's attack. He has greater psionic strike so causes 4d6 damage with that and 4d6 acid and 2d6 deep crystal. With the increased strength and increased damage dice of the expansion it is likely that Kracknol will kill Auburn outright. This may have a domino effect on the familiar. With the death of its master the familiar is not a magical or special animal in any way. So the familiar cannot share spells or have extra HD for any purpose and it is no longer a remoraz. Also I'm not sure a Remoraz can swallow a large creature.

BTW, very few pitlords mentioned the displayes of psionic powers and I'm impressed that you looked them up and applied them in the battle.

That would most defintely be how it works. If your extra 2d6+1 (I think) does 8 or more damage then the familiar reverts back to a normal bird; if 8 damage then it gets to grapple for one round before auburn stabilizes/bleeds. Of course if aub stabalizes then it would just stay a remorhaz. 9 damage kills her outright.

Also, Remorhaz are huge and can imp.grab and swallow any creature smaller then then, so yes it could eat an expanded Kraknol; though the grip of iron would chage that.

Your tactics told me to cast it on a starting square where you'd heard spell casting; which was Zassl's square.

I'm pretty sure it's based on incapicatation, I'll double check, but as I have to make some changes, you'll probably be killed outright anyways.

@Sauro

The remorhaz is 15' tall, so for most of the combat Auburn and Raven are less than 5' away, actually.

My apologizes for missing the second feat in the chain, I just assumed you had the basic feat. And I missed you wanting to expand first; I'll make these changes, which pushes the 'climaxtic' round back one. (And possibly affects things beyond... we shall see.)

EDIT:

The fight has been edited. I'll not spoil it, keep the suspense going. The post, as always, is here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8578332&postcount=309).

I used the new CoCo dice roller for the edit and found it more or less painless. Superior to Invisible castle with the automatic selection of a properly formatted link in and of itself. The new features that are planned should improve it even further... That said, I still don't think online rolling should be mandatory.

Under the levitate spell description

Levitate allows you to move yourself, another creature, or an object up and down as you wish. A creature must be willing to be levitated, and an object must be unattended or possessed by a willing creature. You can mentally direct the recipient to move up or down as much as 20 feet each round; doing so is a move action. You cannot move the recipient horizontally, but the recipient could clamber along the face of a cliff, for example, or push against a ceiling to move laterally (generally at half its base land speed).

If this thing about moving along the celing is true, then it could buy kracknol a few more attempts to escape before Zassl is in range to hit with the ray. Also of importance is that the Web spell grants Kracknol cover against Zassl's attacks infact it should grant total cover because Kracknol is the center of the effect and 20' of the spell's effect is between him and Zassl. So Zassl shouldn't be able to target Kracknol at all untill Kracknol succeeds on a check and moves closer to the edge of the web and even then he will have cover against Zassl's attacks.

Lastly Kracknol does have a bow, and it is mentioned in his tactics to use the bow if he is hit by ray of enfeeblement. Kracknol's chances are slim yes, but even so the crystal should be trying to aid his defense and with cover or total cover Kracknol's AC may be high enough. Kracknol may not be out of the fight quite yet even if he is stuck in the web. Although hopefully he will have some more time to get out of the web. Cumon, he only needs a 16 to escape and he fails 5 rolls. He's got a success comming to him if he can get a few more strength checks in.

Actually, it buys him less time. I was having Zassl move at 5' per move action, wheras he was entitled to 15'. Which is why I don't feel inclined to change that particular section despite the fact that it was clear pitlording error, because it doesn't change anything.

... And after I just got done editing in Zassl's very slow killing of Kracknol.. Now I have to switch out the escape rolls for attack rolls!?! (The psicrystal can only assist you if it can threaten Zassl, which it cannot.)

Well, it's not your fault, it's just my fault for missing so many things the first time around with these tactics ^_^. Because I just spent half an hour on it, I would like to note that Zassl kills Kracknol on round 20 with a heavy crossbow bolt, after running out of spell levels/higher level spell slots to sacrifice to Magic Missiles.

Now, a bit of math easily reveals Kracknol's problem with using the bow. He's entangled in the Web, so he has a -2 to attack from that and a whooping -4 penalty to dexterity which is a further -2, translated. Or in other words... a +2 attack vs AC 25 (until turn 23, which is long after Kracknol is dead). So you need a natural 20 to hit. I really don't want to edit this into the fight, so I'm going to roll out all the attack rolls you would get with the bow between when Zassl becomes visible and when you die (He has cover for most of these shots anyways, but since you need a 20 anyways...) capiche?

Kracknol is enfeebled in round 10 and dies in round 20. So he has 10 attacks (he dies before he can act on round 20). Here goes (invisible castle is actually better for this at the moment, so I'll use it instead of our roller).

Rolls (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=377304).

.... Of course, I forgot to put the name in that roll, so it wont stick around. You got one attack in that iteration; lets try again with the name. Here (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=377307). No 20's this time, but I'll give you the one from last time. Lets see if it confirms the critical (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=377309)... Nope. 1d8 damage isn't enough to kill the Kobold, so you are defeated. Mektos is finally up sorry guys had to work late the last 2 days was unexpectedI have two reasons for being upset at this fight. The one that can be corrected most easily is the failure to follow my tactics.

·If Mektos was within the area of the Entangle effect, I wanted to be 200 feet away (out of Magic Missile range); didn't happen. If he wasn't, I was to melee. When he dismissed his entangle I should have cast my own. My movement is so vastly superior that this never should have happened. I knew he could do what he did, that's why I wanted to not let him do it, which I had the power to accomplish. There was no case in which I should have been within MM range and not meleeing.
·My healing contingency was at 12 HP or below; I retreated and healed at 19 HP. I would have done a bit better had I pressed the attack.
·My horse could have been doing a lot of attacking--it will attack the eagle or Mektos even if I don't direct it because of Guard.
·Where are my goodberries? I should have healed with them first, instead of the wand.

The above reasons, I feel, are easily worthy of a rerun. I believe they are significant and will ask for the fight to be held over if it cannot be corrected in time. Edit: You know, never mind. I've lost fights due to pitlord error before and I will again. It's just worse this time because I'm a net 1,000 gp in the hole. I'm thinking about retiring Aerryl anyway--she's not as good at what I thought she'd be good at, and she's stronger in areas I wasn't intending. Well, I learned a lot about druids in the process. Unfortunately the replacement character I had in mind requires more credits than I have yet....

The second issue is that of economic warfare. I know there's no rule preventing what Mektos did, but it sucks. This is partially due to the weirdness of the Brooch of Shielding (an expendable item that you don't actually use), but it's also partially due to the CL 9 wand that Mektos bought. Why are wands not restricted like scrolls and potions?

Also, at any rate, my free activity (teaching Predator "Down") and 8% TLT tax need to be added.

@Kaigain, Begferdeth, King Uther

The only thing I see (AFAICT) is that Evaine's use of 3 PP for Vigor came out of her PP pool, not her crystal, meaning she could have prevented 6 HP, or most likely put up Vigor for 15 HP, which would have given her a few more rounds. I don't think this would amount to a change in outcome, etc, but it would definitely eat up a few more charges from the Magic Missile wand before all is said and done.
I might be wrong, but I didn't see Evaine spending 13 PP.
My only suggestion to "correct" that would be to ring up Feradeth for the necessary wand charges to do an additional 15 HP of damage (or 6 HP if you prefer) and leave the results as-is.

[Also, the fight shows Feradeth as invisible every round thru 32, but that's very minor as he obviously was not treated as such.]

FFA's are so hard and (mostly) unrewarding for a pitlord, so I can't see any reason to get into more detail. Thanks so much for running.

I say congratulations to Feradeth and condolences to Ch'ch'ili and much gratitude to King Uther.

@King Uther
I'm not clear about FFA awards, but is my 100 gp profession included in my reward? I'm assuming that it's not.

Now if I were a DM and my Paladin/LG player elected to fly/invis and fire magic missiles from cover as a routine method of doing battle (esp. against LG enemies)...that's marginally within the code of conduct. But this isn't tabletop RP and I expect far worse than that in the arena. In my very first fight my C/E kobold teamed up with an L/G Paladin, so anything is possible!

The Harvester (Caterane) vs. Karen Douglas (Lonewolf): Luni

Has anyone seen Luni lately?

Because I would rather surrender this fight than have it held over for another week.

Wands and Djores should be restricted to ECL in my opinon also. But, currently they aren't. I mostly use that wand of magic missile to prove that it might be overpowering at his level range. But, I also feel there should be unrestricted creation of wands and djores. Basicly, if you have craft wand or djore you can put whichever spell/power could normally go in one. Just like powerstones and tattoos.

@lonewolf

I might be able to take on a fight and finish by pairings. Cat is on as Pitlords. If you want the Karen Douglas fight finished, have him send me his tactics as well and I'll give it a go.

I sent you Karens tactics.

If you dont get Cats tactics in time, just let Karen surrender instead. She has bad chances to win this anyway and I really dont want her to sit out another week for this fight.

Not really maybe she's busy with the Gladius Weekly?

after all there is plenty of stuff going on at the time.
