| TelinArtho01-26-06, 11:41 AM | Good morning all. This is the thread to discuss this week's fights. Usual rules apply (play nice or else...). The rules of Gladius can be found here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=448520). Please take note of the Community Vote (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=552366) thread. Not only is it a place to voice your vote on a particular subject (that has been initiated by Cerebus), it is also a great resource for frequently asked questions. Perhaps even better to note is the Ask an Elder (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=569305) thread. This initiative by LLMadCow (ye grand master of Size 7...) has already produced some worthwhile rulings. The deadline is in just over 4 hours - so finish up! |
| waywreth01-26-06, 11:48 AM | Edit: Telin was entirely correct when he posted. I thought today was Wednesday for some odd reason. You have under 3 hours remaining as of this edit. |
| Kaigan01-26-06, 11:54 AM | I thought, well, western canada and PST are -8 GMT. So that means deadline at 1pm, so, telin is correct. |
| waywreth01-26-06, 01:11 PM | I thought, well, western canada and PST are -8 GMT. So that means deadline at 1pm, so, telin is correct. OMG today is Thursday isn't it... I need a vacation or something. I thought it was Wednesday. |
| Caterane01-26-06, 04:00 PM | Okay, stop editing please. Deadline has passed. Today I have a surprise for you: I won't do Pairings. Huan will. :) We wanted to do that last week but we didn't find the time. I'll guide him step by step so it might take a bit longer today. |
| TelinArtho01-26-06, 04:25 PM | Pitlords: 32 + 3 max (Mitza, Kaigan, and myself) Level 9 - 1 Level 8 - 4 (2) Level 7 - 6 (3) +1 MQ Level 6 - 7 (4) +1 MQ Level 5 - 14 (7) +2 MQ Level 4 - 20 (10) +2 MQ Level 3 - 26 (13) +2 MQ Total: 40 + 8 MQ Although certainly not as great as we've been in past weeks - I think this is still fine. I hope that anyone who has the desire to start pitlording takes the plunge - it can be a lot of fun... (it can also be a hassle - but try not to focus on the negative...) |
| kedi01-26-06, 04:31 PM | Well, I was a pitlord. Although I'm a bit rusty with rules, I think I can handle it anyway. And extra points never hurt, you know. ;) |
| Myrridin01-26-06, 04:53 PM | I'd rather concentrate on Questlording. :) If I could use the Feytouched/half-fey template on the Wizards.com website, I'd run a campaign. |
| Luni01-26-06, 05:10 PM | Okay, stop editing please. Deadline has passed. Today I have a surprise for you: I won't do Pairings. Huan will. :) We wanted to do that last week but we didn't find the time. I'll guide him step by step so it might take a bit longer today. Wheee....... To bad I didn't have time to ready any of my characters. Good luck Huan! |
| Dracazar01-26-06, 05:27 PM | I would like to point that Drac is not in prison as noted on Characters of Gladius post. The violation was fixed some days ago and also there is post in Prison to notify this. Thanks. |
| Caterane01-26-06, 06:50 PM | @Drac: I always get PMs from NiQil. He's super-reliable so if he says a character is in prison there's surely another violation that needs to be fixed first. @Kedi: If you want to pitlord again, I can set you active. @Luni: If you tell me quickly whom you want to play before Huan rolls the league that character is in, you might get them ready for today. Don't edit though please. Huan's rolling ECL 3 right now. |
| kedi01-26-06, 06:59 PM | Alright then. For next week, set me up for one duel and let me see if I'm good back on thetrack. And no psi, if possible. |
| Caterane01-26-06, 07:23 PM | That's not possible, Kedi. Most gladiators have something from the psihandbook on them and I cannot check all the sheets to look for non-psi pairings. You'll learn all the better that way :) |
| kedi01-26-06, 07:27 PM | That's not possible, Kedi. Most gladiators have something from the psihandbook on them and I cannot check all the sheets to look for non-psi pairings. You'll learn all the better that way :)...Which I've noticed, after seeing a Gold Elf full wizard build with psi focus. Oh, well then. I'll make the Psi SRD a good use. :P And I'm just laying my back this week, so if there are Pitlords needed I might even start reffing right away. For roster: kedi98ATgmailDOTcom |
| Pitlords01-26-06, 09:09 PM | PAIRINGS DONE! (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8324906) Credits will be assigned tomorrow. Late fights have already been penalized. If there is a problem in the pairings, please PM me immediately. @Luni Your characters have been activated. Okay, have fun and be nice everyone Huan |
| NiQil01-26-06, 09:12 PM | PAIRINGS DONE! (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8324906) Credits will be assigned within the hour. Late fights have already been penalized. If there has been a mistake in pairings, please PM me immediately. @Luni Your characters have been activated. Okay, have fun and be nice everyone Huan Sent 2 PM's to Pitlords already about 2 seperate issues I see... |
| Zevox01-26-06, 09:15 PM | Well well, so I finally get to pitlord a fight thats not ECL5? Cool  . @ Huan: I'll probably have Alboreth's tactics to you tonight or early tomorrow. @ Mitzavolchenko: Definitely tomorrow for Featylec's tactics - I'm going to need to get creative on that one. @ Book5 & Dracazar: I know with the delayed pairings it may be a bit much, but if you could both get me tactics by tomorrow I'd be very appreciative. 'Tis the best day I have for running fights, being 100% free of school and work. Zevox |
| MitzaVolchenko01-26-06, 09:31 PM | [size=2] I am going to need as many of you as possible to get me tactics as soon as possible. I have a very full plate this week and a Mage LARP Friday night/Vamp LARP Saturday night. |
| waywreth01-26-06, 09:38 PM | I am going to need as many of you as possible to get me tactics as soon as possible. I have a very full plate this week and a Mage LARP Friday night/Vamp LARP Saturday night. You'll have Histal's tomorrow morning. |
| Iced01-26-06, 09:40 PM | Galagith vs Noko *Groan* :weep: I weep for the pitlord This fight will suck to run, i'm sorry you'll have to wait for Noko to run out of arrows snowmelp. I'm not sure if Galagith even has a ranged weapon... 9 potions of clw and an AC over 30 makes a tough target to hit even with 160 arrows. maybe i can chuck my guisarme as an improvised weapon? we'll see |
| Iced01-26-06, 09:43 PM | @all quests up tomorrow and we'll have to hustle to get it done by the first deadline. It's finals week. If i finish my math extra credit i'll put them up tonight. Likewise tactics will be sent tomorrow. @Pitlords - I'm running a quest for Raskos (SauroGrenom) EL7 ~Iced |
| kedi01-26-06, 09:53 PM | @Skojar, Shadowmaster: Please make note that I've mis calculated my grapple. Due size, it should be 0 (+1 bab -1 str +4 imp grap -4 size), not 4. I apologise if it's an issue about your tactics. @Shadowmaster: Tactics PM't. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-26-06, 10:14 PM | @Erithmu Sola's quest is up here. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=8325341#post8325341) @Macbrea, Telin, & Kaigan I'll try to get tactics to you tonight. @Snommelp I am looking at MQ possibilities now. I'll have it up for you tonight or tomorrow. |
| Macbrea01-26-06, 10:38 PM | Tactics for Lord Frost vs The First Horseman sent. Tactics for Mektos vs The White Hand sent. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-26-06, 10:43 PM | @Snommelp Logan's MQ is here. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=8325526#post8325526) I have set it as EL3 for the moment. Send me a PM if you wanted a different EL. |
| NiQil01-26-06, 11:11 PM | @ Kaigan: Tactics for Famine sent via PM @ Ayrynthyn: Tactics for Pestilence sent via PM @ MitzaVolchenko: Tactics for War sent via PM @ Kaigan: Tactics for Death sent via PM |
| MitzaVolchenko01-26-06, 11:17 PM | @NiQil tactics for War received. @Kaigan tactics for Sybil sent |
| Zevox01-26-06, 11:30 PM | @ Huan - Tactics for Sir Alboreth sent via PM. @ Mitza - I'll be sure to have Featylec's tactics to you tommorrow morning (I'm on EST (GMT-5 hours), so that may differ for us) so that you can get his fight with Histal over with. Currently I'm expecting it'll be more of a slaughter than a fight though... Zevox |
| TelinArtho01-27-06, 01:15 AM | tactics have been sent for Anton (to Skojar) and Anakala (to Usurpator). The rest will be along tomorrow during the morning or afternoon as I get the opportunity. @my miniquestors - I'll have the starters up in the morning. @Luni - consider your quest open (I'll be posting the intro shortly (same as last week)). |
| MitzaVolchenko01-27-06, 01:49 AM | @Macbrea Tactics for Sliver sent @Telin I'll get Zwei's to you tomorrow...that is far tougher match than my other two. |
| Ravashack01-27-06, 02:30 AM | Tactics for Perius PMed to Macbrea. |
| Dracazar01-27-06, 04:52 AM | @Drac: I always get PMs from NiQil. He's super-reliable so if he says a character is in prison there's surely another violation that needs to be fixed first. There is NO violation on Drac, and also the silly violation pointed by Niqil is really minor. I fixed the violation many days ago, I did the post in prison to notify this, I pointed this in the FotW and I'm still not paired with Drac. Please I ask to be paired, the characters is already paused by two weeks for a rerun asked last week. |
| NiQil01-27-06, 05:10 AM | There is NO violation on Drac, and also the silly violation pointed by Niqil is really minor. I fixed the violation many days ago, I did the post in prison to notify this, I pointed this in the FotW and I'm still not paired with Drac. Please I ask to be paired, the characters is already paused by two weeks for a rerun asked last week. The violation was not fixed as of the time I performed Roll Call this week (I checked), nor did I ever receive a PM to Prisonlords indicating it had been fixed, as per the Roll Call rules that I list in the Roll Call every week for getting out of prison before pairings. When you mentioned this earlier today, I once again checked the violation and saw that it was finally fixed. However, at that time pairings were already in the process of being performed. Unfortunately Drac cannot be paired this week as a result. I can only recommend in the future that the proper procedures be followed to make sure that you get any violations taken care of in a timely fashion. This includes PMing your narc, or, failing that, PMing Prisonlords so the violation can be examined (however in this case, it was me who reported the violation in the first place, so doing both would have been redundant...but in this case neither happened). @all: Not to harp on this subject further, but this is an example of why the Prison procedures need to be followed. This could have all been avoided had things been done as they are supposed to be. Unfortunately, however, I have to be fair to everyone, and I can't make exceptions to the rules for any one individual. @ Dracazar: If Cat wishes to make an exception for you and give you a pairing, that will be something that he will need to do himself. I am not willing to make that exception, because in my mind it sets a bad precedent. Nothing personal by any means...I just have to treat everyone equally. |
| Dracazar01-27-06, 05:26 AM | I made the fix on this post on 01-22-06, 11:13 AM I was unable to edit the online sheet (as noted in the post) because the fight of Drac (that was a rerun) was not yet posted so I'll lose the fight if I would have edited the sheet before the pitlord posted the snapshot of my sheet. As soon as the fight was posted (according to the down of the board that penalized european readers) I fixed the sheet. I don't think that this is an exception because was happened strange things in this issue. However exception or not I kindly asked to be paired (also asked for that in this thread before pairings were done) because the main concern is that the silly violation if fixed. I think we are here to play, not to subdue to blind bureaucracy. |
| lonewolf01-27-06, 07:35 AM | @SauroGrenom: Tactics for Kracknol recieved @Telin: writing tactics in the next few hours |

| Huan01-27-06, 11:05 AM | @Zevox Tactics for Sir Alboreth recieved, thank you. @King Uther I thought about customizing the 3 Drow Elves, but decided not to. Refer to the default Drow elf warrior in the MM as your opponent. |
| Zevox01-27-06, 11:12 AM | @ Mitzavolchenko - Tactics for Featylec Elendi (vs Histal Dar'ath) sent via PM. Also - I'm going by the assumption to make them the EL of the character - if any of you want an EL that is lower or higher - let me know ASAP. |
| Snommelp01-27-06, 12:18 PM | Tactics received for Noko, Boraxx, and Valkin. Tactics sent for Grik. Getting to work on the MQs now. |
| MindWandererB01-27-06, 12:23 PM | @ shadowmaster: Tactics sent. For whatever good they are. Challack will probably be netting his first win this week. |
| Snommelp01-27-06, 12:46 PM | Thwap's MQ is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=576156). I'll get Lissa's up when I can, but I have to go to another class now. |

And I meant it when I said you used up all your bad rolls for me in the last fight you ran for me. Time for some crits! ;) @Usurpator and NiQil, my opponents - Good luck, guys. Here's hoping for some good, memorable fights. |
| Ayrynthyn01-27-06, 01:48 PM | @NiQil & BGT Tactics for Pestilence vs Theoricus received. I haven't had a chance to look them over yet, but i'll pm any questions i may have. With luck, i'll get this up tonight. Many thanks for your promptness... |
| Usurpator01-27-06, 01:54 PM | @Usurpator and NiQil, my opponents - Good luck, guys. Here's hoping for some good, memorable fights. Thanks, I'll see what I can do with my tactics, but a shoot'n'stay-at-range tactic looks the best option at the moment. Pretty boring to fight and to Pitlord, and most likely not particulary memorable... Once again, I'll see what I can do. |
| Snommelp01-27-06, 02:32 PM | And now Lissa Longfellow's quest (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=576221) is up, as well. |

Please read below about sending tactics. Okay, for those of you that haven't sent tacitcs, I'm giving you till Saturday night. That is till 8PM PST to send me tacitcs. If you haven't sent them by then, I will run using default tactics. If there are no default tactics then you will surrender. I have a lot of fights to run, so I need tactics soon. @King Uther: Would you send me some rp for your miniquest to join the PSI guild, and what you will be facing? I will then run it as an arena fight, using the monster map and write a short story or something. But if you want me to run it as a quest in a separate thread, then I will do that, just send me the rp and what you will fight. Thanks. @Huan and Soullord: The stats are here: Trog and Hound Archon Stats Your starting positions are as follows: Dameon starts in box A. Vandelar starts in box D. Trog 1 starts in box B with 1 Hound Archon. Trog 2 starts in box C with 3 Hound Archons. The rolls are here: DamVanJan2006 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?u=DamVanJan2006&limit=on) If you have any other questions, PM me, or post here. |
| Sindorin01-27-06, 03:23 PM | Aranor's tactics have been sent. For once he faces an opponent WITHOUT a level adjustment... |
| kedi01-27-06, 03:31 PM | @Erithmu & Turin: Both tactics recieved. Thanks. ...Then again, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be serious about a tactic starting with Mr. Broccoli and Dr. Pogboomer... We'll see. ;) |
| Pittbull01-27-06, 04:44 PM | @Luni/TelinArtho: From the discussion of Usurpator, regarding Griff's crafting, I realized that Barthleby crafted one week too short. Here's my suggestion: Luni shall run the fight as it is and Barthleby sits out next week. Is this OK, for you both? The other solution would be to abandon the fight. I'd prefer to run the fight, because I allready wrote the tactics and sent them to Luni. |
| TelinArtho01-27-06, 04:48 PM | Yeah - that's fine - just make sure you sit out again next week though or I'll slap you in prison! :) |
| Gonbow01-27-06, 05:49 PM | @lonewolf, MitzaVolchenko Tactics sent, have fun helping me win ^_^ (Please?) @Kaigan That's a nasty dwarf. It would be rather ironic for Lortavos to deliver him his first loss... why couldn't YOU fight the Harvester instead of me? @Sunwolf Alas, one-time allies, Lief and Tatyana shall have to do battle this week. My apologizes for your loss. @Begferdeth Really, must I render your Dromite into a pulp every week with another character? Perhaps he can fight Lortavos next week! |
| Mal-201-27-06, 06:15 PM | @Warclone: Tactics for Donak's fight vs Nycalik sent. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-27-06, 06:30 PM | @Gonbow Tactics for Tatyana received @Biota Tactics for Sappho received |
| MindWandererB01-27-06, 07:01 PM | I notice that Challack vs. Sunstroke (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8331908&postcount=103) is up. It went more or less as I expected, but there are two substantial problems: 1) When I see him, I should get a crossbow shot. Also, when he runs up next to me, he meets my criteria to engage (he's holding the glaive in one hand, and thus not wielding it), so I should close to grapple at that time. 2) Both DTFarstar and myself asked to use grapples to deal damage, and you had us both making melee attacks instead. Need some more rolls in there--these should be opposed grapple checks instead of attacks vs. AC. I expect no change in the result, but these changes will make a difference on the way. |
| Zevox01-27-06, 09:25 PM | @ Book5 - Still waiting on Tan's tactics. If you can get them to me tonight I can at least get the first round or two of the match up yet today. If not, giving me an idea of when you intend to send them would be greatly appreciated. Zevox |
| Skojar01-27-06, 10:03 PM | Greefe (Ribking) vs Kara the Ghost (Luni) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8331154&postcount=101) is up. No suprises. Jonathon Raven (Abyssal Stalker) vs Anton Fael (TelinArtho) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8331611&postcount=102) is also up. I'm pretty sure TelinArtho is about sick of me. At least there's all weekend for me to fix any problems. |
| Huan01-27-06, 10:06 PM | @Kaigan Tactics for Team Vandelar/Dameon PMed. Tactics for Rissa received, thank you. |
| TelinArtho01-27-06, 11:03 PM | Greefe (Ribking) vs Kara the Ghost (Luni) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8331154&postcount=101) is up. There's three small issues with the fight - which will make little difference unless the rolls start going my way. First of all, no part of the character nor his mount may start outside of the starting area. In this fight, it doesn't make any difference - but that small 5ft step outside can be huge (check the Sir Valkin/Ural fights - 90ft of movement is easy enough to get into another's starting area). Second of all, when manifesting the wild-surged vigor, you only gave me 10 temporary hp - and it should be 15. That means the fight will be extended at least one round. Lastly, Force Screen is only ML1 - so it would only last until round 11. Anyway - if all my fights were as clear and concise - the boards would be better for all - nicely done. |

The being outside the starting block is an artifact from Drac's otherwise awesome mapping thing. I can fix that, but all moves are based on the top-left square, so everything will trurn out the same. Second of all, when manifesting the wild-surged vigor, you only gave me 10 temporary hp - and it should be 15. That means the fight will be extended at least one round. Oops misread your intent in the tactics: "...and wild surge vigor for 1pp..." I read that as only use 1 point of wild surge (assumed you could choose 1 or 2. Is it always 2?) I guess it makes more sense to read it as 'daon't augment, only wild surge.' This will add at least a round, so I'll definately do that...I doubt Abyssal will mind. Lastly, Force Screen is only ML1 - so it would only last until round 11. Good call. I used your ML rather than the stone's. Anyway - if all my fights were as clear and concise - the boards would be better for all - nicely done. Thanks. I appreciate the praise, especially when my dice seem to have had it out for you two weeks in a row. EDIT: made the changes. Results remain the same, but you lasted 2 more rounds. A little more luck with an AoO, and you could have actually won. |
| Warclone01-28-06, 01:08 AM | @Kaigan: I tried to send you tactics for the fight but your inbox is full! Please instruct me as to what to do on the matter. I will try to send them again in the morning, I tried to email them to you but thats not an option. |
| TelinArtho01-28-06, 01:49 AM | It looks like I've received all of the tactics due to me. Its a busy weekend, but I might find the time tomorrow or Sunday night to run them. /d |
| King Uther01-28-06, 02:00 AM | @Kaigan Your PM box is full, so: Ajora realizes in order to stop Balbanes he will need to infiltrate Gladius society. The PSI guild stays mostly in the shadows, so itis perfect cover. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-28-06, 02:11 AM | @Telin...sorry for the lateness of the tactics. I was sort of waiting to see what came of the correction request. Zwei levels win or lose, so I guess it really doesn't matter. I am still missing tactics from Solon the Usurper and Leif Goldeneye. |
| TelinArtho01-28-06, 02:20 AM | @Mitza - he posted it in his tactics - he should have sent it to you as well or made a post publicly - but oh well. In any case, he's dropped Comprehend Languages from his spellbook. If I remember correctly - that should be enough to cover his misallocated funds. If you need to adjust your tactics (don't know why that would make a difference - but I suppose it could...), just send me an amended PM. |
| Pittbull01-28-06, 05:16 AM | @TheMagister: I got no tactics from you. Please, send me something, because your default-tactics are too vague to work with it. | kedi01-28-06, 10:50 AM | So, handling the official things... I didn't have any problems with Selene's sheet (Being a Psi), I checked SRD once in a while for this power's effect, that power's effect and so on. I haven't played seriously for some time now, I may be rusty though I tried my best, so if there are any issues please let me know. |

If you have any concerns about this match, please adress your concerns to me via PM, E-Mail, or on this thread. Thanks. You did a good job for being "rusty" but I gotta point out some things (mostly on me) 1) Run is a full round action, so I couldn't manifest vigor at the end of it in round 1. 2) The drawback of wildsurge for a wilder is psychic enervation (in my case 10%) When I manifest a power ya need to roll it. If I hit enervation - bad things happen (Class feature) 3) You say I use my powerstone of skate but I never it used or in effect. 4) At the end I asked for a CDG which stands for coup de grace. It is a common ending tactic as it causes a crit and requires a fort 10+damage or die. Turin will probably ask for a rerun on these things, I know I would in his situation. But well run in general. |

| Zevox01-30-06, 12:58 AM | Featylec vs. Histal (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8346190&postcount=114) is up. Check that one over pretty carefully...I am stillnot feeling well and had to do some heavy editing because I had a rather extended blonde moment. Yeah, it seems I didn't give enough thought to what to do if Histal didn't go invis - I was rather convinced he'd use it, since it seemed to guarantee him a good chance at winning. Should've thought that one through a bit better. Couple of things to point out though: One big problem: I specified in my tactics to use my potions to heal if Histal attacked with magic missile. For some reason you had me use only one, then start shooting and readying to fire on casting. Featylec should have been healing after those magic missiles put him below 12, not shooting and readying to shoot. It has some chance of changing the fight - if I can manage better healing rolls than he does damage rolls, or one of his future MMs fails due to deafness, I may stand a chance at winning yet, considering that hitting my AC with his crossbow wouldn't be overly easy (I just a ran a fight with one competitor depending on a similar situation - not pretty), and since I have exactly as many healing potions as he has MM uses (counting Pearls and Scroll). Either way it'd change the used expendibles. Sorry to ask it of you with the number of fights you have to run this week, but is there any chance you could edit the fight for such? Edit: One other thing to point out if you do, the Tanglefoot bag affecting Featylec would wear off in 2d4 rounds (at a maximum roll round 15), so Featylec would be back up to full AC/attack once it does, making him harder to hit and making it easier for him to hit Histal. Minor problem: Histal can't cast while holding two scrolls, since he needs one hand for somatic spell components. Only causes him to draw his Mage Armor scroll in round 1 after casting Mirror Image, so no big deal, just want to point it out for future reference. Oh, and just out of curiosity, why did Histal make a concentration check in round 5? I can't seem to see anything that would require him to do so... not a problem point, just my curiosity. Zevox |

Zevox Edited per request. Expendables change but outcome did not. And Histal's extra check was a leftover from the mistake I made early on in missing his mirrors and having you entangle him when you actually only had a 1 in 6 chance of doing so. |

And Histal's extra check was a leftover from the mistake I made early on in missing his mirrors and having you entangle him when you actually only had a 1 in 6 chance of doing so. Okay then, looks good to me now. Not much I can do when he manages to hit me with an Acid Arrow despite a touch ac of 18 - like I said, those things would either miss me or kill me, and as it turned out they killed me. Unless Waywreth wants to say something, you should be done with that fight. Zevox |
| MitzaVolchenko01-30-06, 03:05 AM | Sappho vs. War (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8346268&postcount=115) is up. Everything else waits until tomorrow night. I never realized that rolling real dice would take longer than pasting links...I sit corrected. |
| Usurpator01-30-06, 04:08 AM | @Usurpator Tacitcs read a little odd for me, and against a high AC you might waste fewer arrows though rapid does mean that when you are rolling for 20's you havemore chances. If you tell me what you find odd, I might be able to improve them next time. Formatting odd, length odd, grammar odd, tactics odd? About the rapid shot +6/+6 vs. AC 23 : 20%/20% (average damage per round: 2,2) +8 vs. AC 23 : 30% (average damage per round: 1,65) So rapid shot is statistically the better option, even vs. AC 23. Additionally, if I put in contingencies about when and when not using rapid shot, Pitlords might misapply it, choosing a particular attack at the wrong moment (happened before), so I rather write a tactic that have less risk of being misapplied. I honestly have gotten a little bit scared here with some Pitlord literally applying or misapplying tactics, with little regard for the specific situation. I am very happy that you had Rokk pull out his bow against Solon after 1 round of futility running after Solon. The bow was not in Rokk's tactics at all, and there are Pitlord who will just have Rokk running behind Solon the entire time. I think that is a little bit too much for literal reading of tactics. Okay, maybe Rokk (with 8 Int) should have tried for 2-3 rounds to base Solon instead of 1 before he realized he would'nt be able to reach Solon and pull out his bow. My guideline is that I try a tactic (which I know is futile, but the gladiator does not neccessarily know is futile) 2-3 times before I improvise. I will not follow through with a tactic which the gladiator knows is futile at all. EDIT: And thanks for running it! |
| NiQil01-30-06, 04:17 AM | Sappho vs. War is up. Everything else waits until tomorrow night. I never realized that rolling real dice would take longer than pasting links...I sit corrected. No need to change this, unless Biota sees something that needs to be changed, since I already have the victory, but I wanted to point out that in round 3, Sappho charged, which is a full round action, so she could not have drawn a weapon at the same time. So if something else needs to be changed, you can alter that, but no need to do it for it's own sake. As an aside....thank you for using your own dice! I love dice! Invisible Castle must die a horrible death by flaming dog vomit LOL. (Can ya tell I hate online dice rollers? LOL) |

| lonewolf01-30-06, 07:24 AM | Zwei vs Finrod (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8348550) is up. All comes down to one save. hmm I know that I cannot force you to change it, but I think if Finrod has still a spell-level available after the failed Ghoul touch, I see no reason why not to try a sleep on Zwei. He even has a good chance to do it in the round 6. Also I dont see why Labar couldnt do the touch attack on round 2. It makes no difference since Zwei makes his save anyway, but I was just wondering. |

| Macbrea01-30-06, 08:26 AM | Sadly, your going to have to shoot the crossbow at him on that last round. I am unable to target him with a magic missile as he is invisible. And may not target someone with a targeted spell that has full concealment. |

| TroubleWolf01-30-06, 10:11 AM | Solon vs. Rokk (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8346098&postcount=113) is up. In Round 4, Solon casts sleep from memory and then moves away. As sleep has a casting time of 1 round, not 1 standard action, I don't think he should be able to cast it and then move. I should be able to base him while he casts the spell, as it has medium range, and I can full-out run 120 feet. Of course, he can just withdraw after I base him, but he can only double move on a withdraw, so I can keep basing him each round until he decides to stand and fight. This could change the battle dramatically. |
| Mal-201-30-06, 10:26 AM | ...I can full-out run 120 feet. Of course, he can just withdraw after I base him, but he can only double move on a withdraw, so I can keep basing him each round until he decides to stand and fight. If you run to base someone, they don't have to withdraw to avoid AoOs. They could walk, run, or anything else they like. Running makes you flat-footed, and flat-footed characters cannot make attacks of opportunity. If that's not what you're talking about, feel free to ignore me. There are certainly other tactical advantages to be gained for being close to your opponent. |

Of course, he can just withdraw after I base him, but he can only double move on a withdraw, so I can keep basing him each round until he decides to stand and fight. This could change the battle dramatically. Agree with the sleep thing. Disagree with the basing thing. Any double move around any obstacle (of which there are plenty) will prevent Rokk from running to base Solon, since you can only run in a straight line. I have seen Pitlord rule that you cannot even close with anyone who wants to stay away and has *the same* movement (although I don't agree with that). But trust me that with the current arena there is no way you can ever close, base and attack someone with *double* your movement. They just end their move near a rock or corner, and then move around it the next turn, leaving the runner in the dust. Play it out yourself on the map if you like, you find your plan will not work. In any case, the change won't change affect the fight. |
| Usurpator01-30-06, 10:33 AM | If you run to base someone, they don't have to withdraw to avoid AoOs. They could walk, run, or anything else they like. Running makes you flat-footed, and flat-footed characters cannot make attacks of opportunity. That is not true due to the popular misconception that if you lose your Dex bonus, you are considered flat-footed. That is untrue, you are only flat-footed at the start of combat, and never again after that (even if you lose your Dex bonus). Some specific feats or spells may of course simulate the condition, but it is not brought about by losing your Dex bonus. Losing your Dex bonus does not create the 'flat-footed' condition (just a reminder for those folks browsing past this post) |
| MitzaVolchenko01-30-06, 10:43 AM | In Round 4, Solon casts sleep from memory and then moves away. Solon is mounted. Please refer to the mounted combat/ride sections. Casting Spells while Mounted You can cast a spell normally if your mount moves up to a normal move (its speed) either before or after you cast. If you have your mount move both before and after you cast a spell, then you’re casting the spell while the mount is moving, and you have to make a Concentration check due to the vigorous motion (DC 10 + spell level) or lose the spell. If the mount is running (quadruple speed), you can cast a spell when your mount has moved up to twice its speed, but your Concentration check is more difficult due to the violent motion (DC 15 + spell level). My apologies, he should have made a concentration check for the spell. It has been inserted. (1d20+7=15 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=350593) vs. DC 12=success). On the matter of you basing him by running and him moving away, if you wish I shall double move him away and fire another 58 single arrows at you with the penalty for shooting on a mount that is double moving. I do not see the point in doing so, but I will if you wish. I did the best I could with vague tactics. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-30-06, 10:50 AM | No need to change this, unless Biota sees something that needs to be changed, since I already have the victory, but I wanted to point out that in round 3, Sappho charged, which is a full round action, so she could not have drawn a weapon at the same time. So if something else needs to be changed, you can alter that, but no need to do it for it's own sake. As an aside....thank you for using your own dice! I love dice! Invisible Castle must die a horrible death by flaming dog vomit LOL. (Can ya tell I hate online dice rollers? LOL) Doh! Looks like full round actions were my boggle last night. Hopefully I will get through the ECL5 FFA tonight without an issue. I hate using my own dice. It takes longer to type out the totals than it does to copy paste from Invis Castle, but theonline was being stupid, so I went to the good old black and red dice that I bought oh so many years ago at the very first DragonCon that I attended. I'll change that charge if needed but since she rolled a 1! on it, it really matters not if it was a charge or a double move. |
| TelinArtho01-30-06, 10:53 AM | hmm I know that I cannot force you to change it, but I think if Finrod has still a spell-level available after the failed Ghoul touch, I see no reason why not to try a sleep on Zwei. He even has a good chance to do it in the round 6. Also I dont see why Labar couldnt do the touch attack on round 2. It makes no difference since Zwei makes his save anyway, but I was just wondering. Yes you did have a spell level left, but your tactics say that if Ghoul Touch fails to resort to your bow. As to why Labar couldn't do the touch in round 2, it is because you have used a move action (and Labar is "mounted" on you - so his move action is used as well) - but Labar still needs to move into the area of Zwei in order to make the touch. If Labar had a reach to 5ft - he would've been able to do the touch. |
| TroubleWolf01-30-06, 10:54 AM | First fight up: Famine vs. Sven ECL 3 I had to make some pitlording decisions, and hopefully they are fine. Please, both NiQil and TroubleWolf read my explanations before posting any problems. My other fights have been started, aka setup and ready to be run. But i'm tired now, and I have an 8 am class tomorrow. So most will be up tomorrow. Most probably running into tuesday. Just in case.... is there anyone that could possibly take a fight or two if I get overwhelmed? Thanks. kaigan Hey Kaigan, thanks for running the fight. I'm confused as to why my tactics were changed to ranged combat. If I am constantly closing to melee with him, and he is constantly withdrawing, isn't he the one breaking the 10 round delay rule? So shouldn't his tactics be the ones forced to change? Barring that, if you're changing my tactics in the first place, why not cast Expeditious Retreat instead of going to ranged combat? His tactics state he wants to keep it at ranged as long as possible, but mine state I want to melee as soon as possible. If you're going to have to change the tactics, wouldn't it be more reasonable to have my character use a tactic that has a better shot of getting him back on goal (ie, casting Exp Retreat and trying to go melee again) than to go completely away from his tactics and pull out his bow? Also, is there no way that, during his withdrawal/fire/withdrawal/fire, he ends in a spot where I can charge him? If he withdraws 80 feet, I can charge 80 feet. Obviously he would use cover at every opportunity, but surely if he steps behind cover, Sven could wait until he pops out from behind that cover, and then charge him. I just don't like the way this fight makes it seem as though Sven is trying to delay. My tactics clearly state "Obviously, if he moves away from me as he shoots, I'll have to stop being full defensive and run at him to get into melee." I think this makes it pretty clear that I don't want to play the shoot/withdraw game. |

That looks like something that I've been getting wrong for a long time now. Thank you for the correction. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-30-06, 11:06 AM | Sola has defeated the thief who robbed the comely gypsy but the chest (the one with her belongings...her *personal* chest is waiting back in Gladius proper ;) )got away. | TroubleWolf01-30-06, 11:48 AM | On the matter of you basing him by running and him moving away, if you wish I shall double move him away and fire another 58 single arrows at you with the penalty for shooting on a mount that is double moving. I do not see the point in doing so, but I will if you wish. I did the best I could with vague tactics. Hey, I'm not trying to make your job more difficult. I realize my tactics are single-minded. They're intended to be simple for your benefit. But I expect Pilords to do the best they can with the tactics they're given; especially when the Pitlord is you, because you're extremely experienced, good at Pitlording, and you know the rules very well. If he double-moves away from me, I can still run to base him, assuming there are no obstructions between myself and my opponent. Now, you're saying he can just withdraw and double-move. OK, I'll buy that. But if he's withdrawing, he shouldn't get to shoot me, should he? And why couldn't I just draw my longspear to prevent him from withdrawing, or at least make it more difficult? As a monk, I threaten the squares adjacent to me even if my hands are full. With the longspear, I threaten both adjacent squares (unarmed strike) and the 10' area around me, because the spear has reach. Per the SRD, "If, during the process of withdrawing, you move out of a threatened square (other than the one you started in), enemies get attacks of opportunity as normal." So he can leave the area around me for free, but the second threatened square he leaves provokes. If the answer is, "it wasn't in your tactics", then hey, shooting a bow wasn't in either of my characters' tactics, but both of them ended up that way this week. |
| Kaigan01-30-06, 11:52 AM | Hey Kaigan, thanks for running the fight. I'm confused as to why my tactics were changed to ranged combat. If I am constantly closing to melee with him, and he is constantly withdrawing, isn't he the one breaking the 10 round delay rule? So shouldn't his tactics be the ones forced to change? Theoretically, he shot at you round 2, and you started moving at him in round 2, so for theoretical purposes, you were the one that would break the 10 round delay first. You did not explicitly say to use expeditious retreat. I felt that that would have been too much of a pitlord decision to do so. If you wait for him to pop up, he would be far enough away. Like you said, he would always try to withdraw 80 ft away, behind cover so you couldn't charge. Then move away next round as well, so he would be 120 ft away by the time he broke cover. And I did just that... I ran you at him, and he withdrew, I double moved you towards him, and he withdrew, and this would go on and on in circles, so I had to draw the line somewhere, and since you would be breaking the 10 round rule first, I had to make the decision with your character. In all honesty I thought that what I did was the best choice. Bunker down and wait out all the arrows. You had a good chance, and you did get into melee eventually. I didn't think it was fair for NiQil's character, if I had you cast expeditious retreat when you didn't say so, and I thought that I had explained my actions in the fight well enough. @NiQil: I want you to look over the fight too, and if you deem that I should rerun, allowing Sven to cast exp. retreat, then I will re run, but it won't be till tomorrow. I have 7 more fights to run, so re runing is going to be my last prioriety. I'm sorry, but I need to get the others done first. I will probably re run, but I want to get some input from the other gladiator first. |
| TroubleWolf01-30-06, 12:18 PM | Theoretically, he shot at you round 2, and you started moving at him in round 2, so for theoretical purposes, you were the one that would break the 10 round delay first. How can I be delaying when I attempt to fight him every round? You did not explicitly say to use expeditious retreat. I felt that that would have been too much of a pitlord decision to do so. Well, I feel that it's too much of a Pitlord decision to switch me to ranged when my tactics clearly state I want to melee and you have the means (just be casting expeditious retreat) to make this happen. If you wait for him to pop up, he would be far enough away. Like you said, he would always try to withdraw 80 ft away, behind cover so you couldn't charge. Then move away next round as well, so he would be 120 ft away by the time he broke cover. Then why not move me directly at the cover 80 feet? That way, if he wants to get a shot at me, he has to move around the cover. Even if he moves at a diagonal, he can only move 40 feet and still take a shot at me, putting him well within charging distance. Even if he moves 80 feet and doesn't take a shot at me, then he's out in the open, not behind cover, right? And I did just that... I ran you at him, and he withdrew, I double moved you towards him, and he withdrew, and this would go on and on in circles, so I had to draw the line somewhere, and since you would be breaking the 10 round rule first, I had to make the decision with your character. I didn't think it was fair for NiQil's character, if I had you cast expeditious retreat when you didn't say so, and I thought that I had explained my actions in the fight well enough. In Round 6, you say "Sven will have to shoot back every 10th round, so that he doesn't get the penalty. This is the best option that is neutral to both parties." However, this is not neutral to both parties, because Sven is only getting one attack every 10 rounds, while Famine is taking 10 attacks in the same amount of rounds. Therefore, over 20 rounds, Sven only has two chance of getting a natural 20, while Famine has 20 chances. How is that neutral? |
| Pittbull01-30-06, 12:21 PM | The fight is up (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8346035&postcount=112)! If you have any concerns, please tell me. The fight has been fixed! |
| NiQil01-30-06, 12:26 PM | Theoretically, he shot at you round 2, and you started moving at him in round 2, so for theoretical purposes, you were the one that would break the 10 round delay first. I will probably re run, but I want to get some input from the other gladiator first. I personally don't see the need for a rerun. Here's why: 1) If you follow my opponent's tactics to the letter, and do not have him go full defensive behind cover while I am firing, having him come after me instead, I have a feeling that more of my shots are going to connect, most likely resulting in the same ending. 2) The overall tactic of my opponent, which was to get me into melee, still occurred. I blew through every arrow I had, and he withstood that. It's just that once melee happened, I still managed to come out ahead. That won't change...the rolls would stay the same. All you would be doing is saving me arrows. 3) I agree with Kaigan that using Expeditious Retreat would be too much of a discretionary decision. If you had said something in your tactics to the effect of 'you are free to use any of my stuff as you see fit', or something similar, I could see that as a justification. With no mention of it in your tactics at all, I would very much object to that being allowed (even though that is what I had expected you to do in the first place). 4) I think that what Kaigan did was the fairest to both parties. It allowed my range tactic to function, but also gave you a good chance to survive. And it worked. You lasted through every ranged attack I had. The only problem was that your healing contingency didn't really afford you as much protection as would have been needed to withstand it and still be able to go toe to toe. You still got me into melee, because I had no other choice. |
| Ayrynthyn01-30-06, 12:30 PM | @NiQil & BGT Tactics for Pestilence vs Theoricus received. I haven't had a chance to look them over yet, but i'll pm any questions i may have. With luck, i'll get this up tonight. Many thanks for your promptness... Guys... i need a favor. I have some family issues going on, and there is no way i'll be able to run this fight this week. If anyone can pick this up for me, i'd be in your debt... If i get any takers here in the next little bit i'll be able to forward the tactics, otherwise :embarrass i do appologize. |
| DTFarstar01-30-06, 12:40 PM | @Ayr - I didn't think I would have time this week, but I've got a few hours right now, and I should have some time tommorrow morning or tonight as well, so if you will PM me the tactics I'll get started on the fight. I would appreciate you PMing Pitlords as well, to let him know I am taking over. |
| Kaigan01-30-06, 01:06 PM | Question: Say one gladiator is asleep. The other one wants to remove his weapons and a wand. Is this allowed? Does it wake the other gladiator up? Becuase according to spell description: Sleeping creatures are helpless. Slapping or wounding awakens an affected creature, but normal noise does not. Awakening a creature is a standard action (an application of the aid another action). Also, if the wand of stolen, is a wand of CLW. Is the gladiator that stole it allowed to use it? |
| Prisonlords01-30-06, 01:15 PM | Question: Say one gladiator is asleep. The other one wants to remove his weapons and a wand. Is this allowed? Does it wake the other gladiator up? Becuase according to spell description: Also, if the wand of stolen, is a wand of CLW. Is the gladiator that stole it allowed to use it? I don't know if the sleeping would wake the other or not....I would say yes, but that is purely my opinion. Nothing to back in up. As for using the wand, I would say no, because the gladiator has no way to know what the command word to activate the wand is, so the only way possible would be a UMD check to activate an item blindly, or to identify the item to get the command word. |
| SoulLord01-30-06, 01:26 PM | The question brings back some fond memories... Once when a party of mine defeated a wizard who had been using a wand to summon creatures he had the command word engraved in the wand with explosive runes. It was a blast when the wizard tried to read it :) |

| TroubleWolf01-30-06, 01:44 PM | 1) If you follow my opponent's tactics to the letter, and do not have him go full defensive behind cover while I am firing, having him come after me instead, I have a feeling that more of my shots are going to connect, most likely resulting in the same ending. Obviously he can't do that, because he feels it violates the 10 round delay rule. 2) The overall tactic of my opponent, which was to get me into melee, still occurred. I blew through every arrow I had, and he withstood that. It's just that once melee happened, I still managed to come out ahead. That won't change...the rolls would stay the same. All you would be doing is saving me arrows. The rolls would be different because if I had Expeditious Retreat cast (which is what should have been done once it became apparent that Famine could stay out of range otherwise), eventually I would be able to charge, adding +2 to my attack roll. Not to mention the fact that I could have started Inspire Courage as well, knowing that with 140 feet of charge, I would have Famine in a charge sooner than later, adding another +1 to hit and a +1 to damage. Instead, you consider it more fair that my tactics were thrown out the window and replaced with tactics that are in direct opposition to my own? Basically, my tactics state that I want to be the agressor in this combat, and instead I was made into the defender. One spell is all I get in the Arena, and I most often use it for Expeditious Retreat to catch my fleeing opponents. Therefore, it is more inline with my character and with my tactics to cast Expeditious Retreat and close to melee than to bunker down and dodge arrows. So as consolation for having my tactics tossed out and replaced with opposite tactics, I cost you less than 10 gold in arrows, completely waste my Tattoo of Force Screen, don't even use Inspire Courage, lose another fight, don't level, and appear as though I use delay tactics in my fights? That doesn't appear to be a great trade-off for me. |
| Macbrea01-30-06, 01:52 PM | For future reference Pittbull. Chill metal effects all metal objects that an opponent is wearing/wielding. The only real effect that would have had is make The White Hands armor cause him 10d4 damage before he could manage to actually get out of it. And there was no reason to leave Mektos' Armor at home. Yes, I realize it gives me 10% arcane failure but if I was disrupted on my casting of mage armor it would have been needed. Otherwise, good fight. |

| Kaigan01-30-06, 01:57 PM | My second fight is up: Sybil vs. Death Please look over it. Hope everything checks out. @TroubleWolf and NiQil: I can rerun the fight but this is what will happen: Sven will cast exp. retreat, and get into melee. But not ill he recognizes that he won't be able to catch up to Famine, and that means till about round 4-5. In melee, I will keep the same rolls. Please recognize that I will not heal Sven in the rerun. You said not to use expendibles either than your tattoo. So you WILL not use your wand of CLW, and you will not have the CLW spell level since you cast exp. retreat. I'll rerun, and that's how it's going to be run, and it will be rerun tomorrow. |
| Macbrea01-30-06, 01:58 PM | Ah, good good. Sorry.... Just figured I would mention it as I coudln't tell from reading through the fight that his items had saved. |
| kedi01-30-06, 01:58 PM | @Shadowmaster: You haven't posted on this thread yet, did you recieve my and my opponent's tactics? |
| Pittbull01-30-06, 02:02 PM | Ah, good good. Sorry.... Just figured I would mention it as I coudln't tell from reading through the fight that his items had saved. ...casts chill metal (will-saves: armor:17, shield:8 vs DC15). It was there. ;) |
| Kaigan01-30-06, 02:10 PM | Question: What am I supposed to do??? I was assigned this fight: Solomon (Warclone) vs Gaston Dar'ath (waywreth): Kaigan But I found it here: Solomon vs. Gaston DTFarstar ran it last week. I guess it was overlooked? I'm not going to run it again, if it was already run. |
| Macbrea01-30-06, 02:10 PM | Heh, don't mind me I like to give my opponent the most chances possible. And that rotten kobold is horridly deadly! Rotten kobold wins again. |
| Biota01-30-06, 02:14 PM | No need to change this, unless Biota sees something that needs to be changed, since I already have the victory, but I wanted to point out that in round 3, Sappho charged, which is a full round action, so she could not have drawn a weapon at the same time. So if something else needs to be changed, you can alter that, but no need to do it for it's own sake. As an aside....thank you for using your own dice! I love dice! Invisible Castle must die a horrible death by flaming dog vomit LOL. (Can ya tell I hate online dice rollers? LOL) Nope, the error was in my favor and I lost anyway. edit: actually in round 5, "War moves for cover to break charge drawing his axe as he goes and uses his wand (7+1=8)." Doesn't he have to withdraw or take an AOO? edit2: in round 4, I think my damage was calculated incorrectly (to be fair my character sheet should specify my damage while raging). I did 2d6+8, (Sappho moves forward and attacks (11+8+2ragestr=21) hits for (2+3+8=13) points of damage) but when raging my str is 22 which is a +6 modifier or +9 damage with a 2h weapon, not +8. This is minor and would not have changed the outcome of the fight. edit3: in round 1, I think I have cover from his shot. Given that I'm flatfooted this wouldn't change the result of the attack. I put this in here in hopes of clarification. To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target’s square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC). I'm not going to run it again, if it was already run. You didn't quote the whole entry: "Solomon (Warclone) vs Gaston Dar'ath (waywreth): Kaigan [Week 2]" It's a re-run due to problems with the first fight (issues with delaying which, as I recall, were never resolved). I don't know if their new tactics will resolve the issue, but that's your job. Re: Shadowmaster: He hasn't been around since he posted my fight. He's not responding to this thread or to the PM I sent him regarding my complaints. I'm understandably upset that he chose to ignore my tactics and had me run around like an idiot and ignore my opponent. His profile shows that he was last online 34 hours ago (which is before I PMed him). I don't know if he's coming back, whether he plans to run more fights or correct mine. Do I have any recourse if he just bails? I don't mind writing off a loss to bad pitlording, but when someone does such a horribly botched job, I would like some sort of correction. Is it possible, if he doesn't put in an appearance by tomorrow, for someone else to take over the fight? I hate to ask that, but I really do feel wronged here. It's a simple fight, anyway. |

| NiQil01-30-06, 02:36 PM | My second fight is up: Sybil vs. Death Please look over it. Hope everything checks out. Several issues here, some fight affecting. 1) Death can't rage. He is an ex-barbarian, and ex-barbarians have no ability to rage. 2) Armor spikes do not have to be used in a grapple. They can be used in an attack just like any other melee weapon. It's just that they can *also be used in a grapple, since they count as a light weapon. So rather than grappling, attacks should be made with the armor spikes. They are the weapon of last resort, and are there for exactly this type of situation. 3) Whether or not Sybil can remove all of that equipment without waking me up is very much going to be up for debate. I would like to get Elder opinions on this one, since there is not really a mechanic for what wakes a person up during sleep. In any event, some editing will need to happen. If the removal of the items is dissallowed, that will drastically change things. If not, then the ending rounds should be edited to show attacks with armor spikes rather than grapple attempts, and there should be no rage. |
| NiQil01-30-06, 02:39 PM | @TroubleWolf and NiQil: I can rerun the fight but this is what will happen: Sven will cast exp. retreat, and get into melee. While I strongly disagree with your decision to allow expeditious retreat, and really don't see a need for a rerun, I'll abide by it. |
| Kaigan01-30-06, 02:39 PM | Several issues here, some fight affecting. Okay, I will have to fix those, but I would also like a ruling for taking the weapons, because that is a major factor. But these edits will likely occur tomorrow. |
| waywreth01-30-06, 02:40 PM | Question: What am I supposed to do??? I was assigned this fight: Solomon (Warclone) vs Gaston Dar'ath (waywreth): Kaigan But I found it here: Solomon vs. Gaston DTFarstar ran it last week. I guess it was overlooked? I'm not going to run it again, if it was already run. Just a note that we were both allowed to submit new tactics - which you should have. |
| DTFarstar01-30-06, 02:43 PM | Yeah, I abolished the delay penalty for the fight because I couldn't for the life of my figure out how to run a delay fairly and not having a delay made each person able to do the spirit of their tactics. I had a huge explanation about it last week, but evidently I was disagreed with. I still feel that I was within my powers as pitlord and that it was a fair fight with my understanding of spells and powers(that their targets and such have to be selected BEFORE being cast as opposed to at the end which is why some constructs looked stupid when they appeared.) There was also something about "Making sure Solomon's constructs get an attack every turn of their life" which was patently impossible, but I still got yelled at for it not happening. Anyway, to the reason I'm posting, I need a fast response on this if possible, Can Astral Constructs with the Fly ability be summoned in mid-air? I assume no, but if I recall that was another problem from last week, and I stupidly took a fight as a favor and it's got constructs again. Player wants them to make dives, so summoned in air would be the most intelligent way, but I don't think it is possible. Anyway, fast response would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris |
| TheMagister01-30-06, 02:45 PM | hi, Pittbull! Thanks for running the fight. (sigh) Okay. Chill Metal is a great spell...but it's not THAT great. I submit: Chill Metal Transmutation [Cold] Level: Drd 2 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: Metal equipment of one creature per two levels, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart; or 25 lb. of metal/level, none of which can be more than 30 ft. away from any of the rest Duration: 7 rounds Saving Throw: Will negates (object) Spell Resistance: Yes (object) Chill metal makes metal extremely cold. Unattended, nonmagical metal gets no saving throw. Magical metal is allowed a saving throw against the spell. An item in a creature’s possession uses the creature’s saving throw bonus unless its own is higher. A creature takes cold damage if its equipment is chilled. It takes full damage if its armor is affected or if it is holding, touching, wearing, or carrying metal weighing one-fifth of its weight. The creature takes minimum damage (1 point or 2 points; see the table) if it’s not wearing metal armor and the metal that it’s carrying weighs less than one-fifth of its weight. On the first round of the spell, the metal becomes chilly and uncomfortable to touch but deals no damage. The same effect also occurs on the last round of the spell’s duration. During the second (and also the next-to-last) round, icy coldness causes pain and damage. In the third, fourth, and fifth rounds, the metal is freezing cold, causing more damage, as shown on the table below. Now, the most obvious and important thing is that the rapier and warhammer are "possessed" (HA! These holy items are possessed!!) objects, and so get saving throws despite being non-magical. The next and less obvious thing is that (taken seperately) a shield, warhammer, and/or rapier is definitely 1/5 of a human's weight (even his minimum weight), and are not his armor. So, even with TWH rolling a 1 on his shield's save, it would only cause him 1 or 2 points of damage a round. I move on. In Round 8, you have Mektos ready an action to cast Chill Metal. That's fine. TWH attacks and misses (also fine...darned low rolls for me this fight!). Then you have Mektos 5' step back and cast? You can't 5' step as part of a ready action per CoCo rules. TWH is owed an AoO for casting a spell in a threatened area OR Mektos needs to withdraw or something else. i move on. Round 9, TWH should go first, before Mektos. This is because of the nature of invisibility when interacting with readied actions. TWH attacks, becomes invisibile, which allows him to be targeted with spell, which Mektos then casts. This is a CoCo rule, and is checkable in the handy-dandy prison list. May I also respectfully remind the pitlord of TWH's feint in combat trick. i move on. i notice that Mektos never wasted a round firing Magic Missiles into TWH's shield. I say this because it is strange that Mektos failed his spellcraft check to ID the spell as it was being cast. This should buy TWH another round to deal damage to his foe. i move on. Between rounds 8 and 9, why did TWH not ready his shield? Further, why didn't he use the shield's special blinding ability the round after the attack? The time was prime, my pitlord! TWH is owed Reflex saves before Mektos can turn this into a ranged battle. i move on. Round 11: why not take the AoO? It's free and doesn't slow TWH down at all in his pursuit of the master. Indeed, it is a threat when one has such low HP. This isn't really a complaint, just a questioning of your judgement call. In my tactics, I DID mention to ignore the eagle in a very specific situation, that being if Mektos fell off his eagle. THAT didn't happen (much to my chagrin), so the AoO is oddly ignored, in my eyes. i move on. Round 12: Please explain to me how Kisandra can full attack in round 10 and then diving charge in round 11. And 12. And 13. And so on. Charges are very specific in their requirement of straight line, unhindered movement. Since even a creature with perfect maneuverability cannot climb and diving charge in the same round, this is wrong. TWH is the target of to many attacks in rounds that he moves. This error may or may not be repeated earlier in the fight (I seem to remember an eagle full-attacking off of a ready action...ah, yes! Round 6. Strange that...). Please look. i mov...just kidding. I think that is it (and is definitely enough for now!). Please respond here before making any changes...I want to find out what you think about what I have said. Thanks! TM |
| TroubleWolf01-30-06, 02:47 PM | I can rerun the fight but this is what will happen: Sven will cast exp. retreat, and get into melee. But not ill he recognizes that he won't be able to catch up to Famine, and that means till about round 4-5. No problems there. You said not to use expendibles either than your tattoo. So you WILL not use your wand of CLW, and you will not have the CLW spell level since you cast exp. retreat. Acceptable. I can't cast while raging anyway. In melee, I will keep the same rolls. I'm not sure how this can work. First off, once Expeditious Retreat is cast, the next round Sven should start Inspire Courage. From my Tactics: "If I get within chargin distance, stop moving and take a round to Inspire Courage. That bonus could be necessary." Inspire Courage and the charge I should get will alter my modifiers. It won't be Famine double-moving to close with Sven, it will be Sven charging Famine. I'm just not sure how that will work if the same melee rolls are kept. |
| DTFarstar01-30-06, 02:48 PM | @Niqil - Having weapons taken while sleeping happened to Challack a week or two ago. Tactics said ALL weapons which for Challack would have included armor spikes(armor) I posted about armor removal waking me up, and was told no, that it had to damage me or be an aid another action to wake me. I don't remember who told me, just know that's what I was told. |

I'm just not sure how that will work if the same melee rolls are kept. In answer to that last question....the rolls themselves are kept, but the modifiers applied to them (attack bonus, etc) are changed to reflect the new situation. And since all of those ranged attacks are not melee attacks, none of those will be used in melee....once the initial rolled melee attacks on my end are used, new ones will be rolled, and the same with you. |
| NiQil01-30-06, 03:01 PM | @Niqil - Having weapons taken while sleeping happened to Challack a week or two ago. Tactics said ALL weapons which for Challack would have included armor spikes(armor) I posted about armor removal waking me up, and was told no, that it had to damage me or be an aid another action to wake me. I don't remember who told me, just know that's what I was told. I would have very much disputed that, and would have sought Elder ruling on the issue. The only way to remove armor spikes is to remove the armor itself, which would require rolling someone around on the ground to maneuver them out if it....that should most definitely wake someone up. The damage or aid another action are not the only ways to wake someone up...just the listed examples. I would categorize the removal of armor as falling into the "slapping" portion of the examples given. But, in any event....any Elders that can look at the sleep/weapon removal issue and provide opinions would be appreciated. Slapping or wounding awakens an affected creature, but normal noise does not. Awakening a creature is a standard action (an application of the aid another action). |
| Macbrea01-30-06, 03:07 PM | The next and less obvious thing is that (taken seperately) a shield, warhammer, and/or rapier is definitely 1/5 of a human's weight (even his minimum weight), and are not his armor. So, even with TWH rolling a 1 on his shield's save, it would only cause him 1 or 2 points of damage a round. That is 1/5 of the items weight not the masters wieght. Reread that again. And the eagle can stay in the next square to you and full attack. Unlike a normal eagle it does have hover. It shouldn't be able to dive though, that requires 30ft of movement. |
| kedi01-30-06, 03:10 PM | Re: Shadowmaster: He hasn't been around since he posted my fight. If both you and your opponent approves the re-run, I can step up to run it. |
| MindWandererB01-30-06, 03:27 PM | If both you and your opponent approves the re-run, I can step up to run it.That would be DTFarstar's call, then. So how about it, DTF? As I keep saying, I still think you'll win, but wouldn't it be nice to win based on your character and not bad pitlording? And it's moot if shadowmaster shows up in the meantime anyway. I should make it clear that under no circumstances do I want the fight held over, should it come down to that. |
| Pittbull01-30-06, 03:31 PM | hi, Pittbull! Thanks for running the fight. (sigh) Okay. Chill Metal is a great spell...but it's not THAT great. In the third, fourth, and fifth rounds, the metal is freezing cold, causing more damage, as shown on the table below. First of all, is this sarkastic tone in your post. I believe, I really don't deserve it, do you see how much time and efford I put in this fight. I spent every free second on my allready tough working day. But my english it not the best, so if I'm wrong I say sorry. So now to the mistake, I'll fix everything, which is necessary. Regarding chill metal: Your magic items got their saving throw of +7, which should be right. The shield has 5lbs, warhammer 5lbs and the rapier 2lbs, that is 12Lbs altogether, so he might take 1 or 2 damage, I gave him 4 that may be a mistake. BTW you didn't list a weight for your character. Yes see above. You can't take, 5' during a readied action to avoid hits per CoCo, but that you must not make them at all, I didn't know (are really sure?), sorry. He needs to cast the spell defensively or take an AoO. As I know, the readied action sets and then initiative goes on and it was Maktos to react first in the next turn. There was no time for feinting, because you needed the move-actions to move. i move on. i notice that Mektos never wasted a round firing Magic Missiles into TWH's shield. I say this because it is strange that Mektos failed his spellcraft check to ID the spell as it was being cast. This should buy TWH another round to deal damage to his foe. OK, I forgot that. i move on. Between rounds 8 and 9, why did TWH not ready his shield? Further, why didn't he use the shield's special blinding ability the round after the attack? The time was prime, my pitlord! TWH is owed Reflex saves before Mektos can turn this into a ranged battle. Because he dropped the shield. I wanted to keep him the possibility to deliver the AoO to Mektos. TWH didn't know that Mektos planed to run away again. These were dive-attacks, not charges, are they handled the same way? If yes, sorry, then I need to substract -2 from every attack. In round 6 Kisandra full-attack, because she's next to TWH. i mov...just kidding. I think that is it (and is definitely enough for now!). Please respond here before making any changes...I want to find out what you think about what I have said. Thanks! TM I hope, I answered everything correctly, please let Macbrae respond too. It is allready late here in Germany. But you both can discuss the issues. I'll have a look this tomorrow morning and fix it after your agreement. |
| DTFarstar01-30-06, 03:36 PM | @MindWandererB - It's fine with me, so long as the fight is not held over. I have no interest in an unfair win. Challack does, being Chaotic Evil, but as I am more of a Neutral Good bent, I want my opponent to leave feeling he either won or lost(hopefully the latter) fairly. So, someone re-running with closer(or at all) adherence to your tactics is fine. Theoricus vs. Pestilence (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8353790&postcount=124) is done now. Earlier question really doesn't matter. Pestilence got some really lucky rolls in. He got 19, 18, 2, 19, 19 and didn't miss either time because of invisibility. Just really really lucky. Sorry BGT. |
| Macbrea01-30-06, 03:43 PM | No, I am fine with just standing there until he casts at me then taking a 5ft step afterwords. It could easily be argued that you cannot ready an action against a target you cannot see. And therefore I should take the hit from hidding, take a 5ft step and cast a spell on him. It doesn't change a single thing in the way the combat was run. As I am unable to target the invisible target with my wand of magic missile. I changed to a crossbow and started moving. By my tactics I was to wait til round 25 before I pulled back out the wand and blasted you with it. I am fine with the non use of a wand as per written. TheMagister there is no reason to jump on a pitlord for running a fight. If you really don't like the way pitlords run your fights then don't have them do it. EDITED: to remove reference to the chill metal spell after fully rereading it. It shouldn't do any real damage if the armor or shield wasn't effected. As those are armor. |
| Mal-201-30-06, 03:44 PM | If both you and your opponent approves the re-run, I can step up to run it. Wait. This fight was run, on time, by the assigned pitlord. Are you guys sure it's okay to get a new pitlord and have the fight re-run in the same week? I know there are objections to how tactics were (or were not) followed, and there may have been pitlord errors (I don't recall), and I know the pitlord hasn't logged on in a day or two. Still, I didn't think you were allowed to get someone else to re-run the fight without holding it over. Also, can I ask what will happen with the credits for running this fight? |

My time is very limited, but I'd like to have a proper and clean fight. |
| Malither7601-30-06, 04:20 PM | Evaine Dreamseeker (Ariel23) vs Ivangar the Exile (Turin) is up |
| DTFarstar01-30-06, 04:24 PM | @ Niqil - Glad there is nothing glaringly obvious. It is a short enough fight that I don't think there really are going to be many concerns besides Theo not moving, and I just happen to be a very strict person on adapting tactics. Realistically, with thematic rolls kept, then there is really nothing to be done to stop you from winning. You are welcome, about the fight, it was not as bad as I imagined it would be, due largely to insanely lucky rolls on your part. I begin to see why you dislike online rollers so much. I may begin only running my fights with my own dice. I don't think it would go over well, but I would hope it would negate foolishness like this. Then again, technically, that set of die rolls had to happen sometime, so I guess it's not insane, just not even close to fair to your opponent. :P Anyway, [/rant]. I hope bgt isn't too dissatisfied with the fight. |
| kedi01-30-06, 04:26 PM | Alright. But make note that I'll use all the rolled dices (for instance, Inits, Attack #1 for Player A, Dmg #1 for Player A etc etc). I'll start working on it now, and will PM Pitlords account once it's done. And I don't think he'll send in my duel in time, anyway... Darg. |
| Turin01-30-06, 04:45 PM | Re: Evaine vs Ivangar: remember your flat footed in grapple so she only had a 50% chance to hit or so but I was rolling hot another crit or if you missed a grapple attempt and it could have been the other way.Not true, actually... No Dexterity Bonus: You lose your Dexterity bonus to AC (if you have one) against opponents you aren’t grappling. (You can still use it against opponents you are grappling.)(Emphasis mine.) Obviously Ivangar pulled it out anyway, and Evaine's Dex bonus of 1 wouldn't have entered the equation because Ivangar was going for opposed grapple checks and not attacks. But for future reference. And I noticed that I never asked you to drink the potion of mage armor I had. Whoops! But thank you for doing what I actually asked and not what you thought I might have been asking. Things get less hairy that way. Thanks for running the fight! |
| kedi01-30-06, 04:56 PM | I notice that Challack vs. AC. I expect no change in the result, but these changes will make a difference on the way.I intend to keep the duel as similar to way Shadowmaster ran it. I just read both sheets and tactics, and I spotted these: Round 1: No probs. Round 2: No probs. Round 3: Crosbow attack and then move. Round 4: Good enough. Round 5-7: Aye, he deals Armor Spike damage, but he's grappling. And so you are. New dices will be rolled for opposing grapples, matching into a "Who's gonna grapple meaner!". Appropirate changes are being done. |
| Macbrea01-30-06, 05:27 PM | Pittbull, I am fine with the way you ran the fight by my tactics. I purposely wrote tactics that gave you alittle room to switch out to next step if I was not going to be able to do much with my current tactics. I would assume they are somewhat linear in nature. If plan A isn't working goto plan B, If plan B doesn't appear to be working try C. So, your decision to switch to a crossbow when it was obvious I couldn't target my opponent was perfectly in line. The arguement that I shouldn't take the 5ft step when readying is a legitimate rules problem. But, by my tactics I shouldn't be readying anyways. I should be moving about looking for my target and allowing my eagles +20 spot to find the guy with the invisibility spell. So, if you choose to not have me ready in that turn and just step after the attack on me I am fine with that. The real problem The White Hand should be having throughout the whole fight is casting a spell is 0 DC for a listen check. You are unable to actually move silently and talk. It is actually counter productive. So each round he choose to try and cast a spell from a scroll his MS was 0. As that would change far to much of the fight, do not change the fight to reflect that fact. It would be far to annoying. So, given that bit of information I don't actually want a huge amount changed in the fight. |
| kedi01-30-06, 05:40 PM | Rerun done. You can see the result in here. |
| TheMagister01-30-06, 05:46 PM | First of all, is this sarkastic tone in your post. I believe, I really don't deserve it, do you see how much time and efford I put in this fight. I spent every free second on my allready tough working day. But my english it not the best, so if I'm wrong I say sorry. So now to the mistake, I'll fix everything, which is necessary. First of all, let me deeply apologize for the misunderstanding my post-style caused. It was not my intention to "sound" sarcastic at all, but to keep things light-hearted. The "(sigh)" was for my losing streak the last few weeks. Truthfully, re-reading the post, I don't know how on earth it could be construed as sarcastic. I'll chalk it up to language barrier and move on, hopefully with your forgiveness. I beleive you missed what I was emphasizing totally. Even non-magical items get a saving throw vs. chill metal simply because they are "worn" items. Therefore, two more saving throws are needed (one for the warhammer, and one for the rapier). If those saving throws are successful, then my (5 lb mithril heavy) shield will be the only item of mine affected, and 5 lbs is much less than 1/5 of the weight of ANY adult human in the D&D game. You can't take, 5' during a readied action to avoid hits per CoCo, but that you must not make them at all, I didn't know (are really sure?), sorry. He needs to cast the spell defensively or take an AoO. Thank you, kindly. As I know, the readied action sets and then initiative goes on and it was Maktos to react first in the next turn. There was no time for feinting, because you needed the move-actions to move. Please refer to the Prison Thread for the official CoCo ruling on readied actions and invisibility. I'll go find it for you...here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8264312&postcount=10) it says that the attacking player becomes visible after his attack, and THEN the ready action goes off. Since time travel isn't possible until Caster Level 17 (Time Stop :)), the initiative order resets to be TWH, Mektos. On a related note, if you wish to change that readied action (the chill metal one) to a delayed action, that would be fine with me (it makes more sense, anyhow). Because he dropped the shield. It takes a full round before the shield starts damaging me. I could've taken the damage, used the special ability, and then dropped the shield. At least, that's what I think I should have done. This is your call, and was only a question on my part. I wanted to keep him the possibility to deliver the AoO to Mektos. TWH didn't know that Mektos planed to run away again. A good answer. Thank you! These were dive-attacks, not charges, are they handled the same way? If yes, sorry, then I need to substract -2 from every attack. They are. Not worth doing, as none of them hit (did they?). What I had a problem with more than anything (since they didn't hit) is the FREQUENCY of the attacks. With the eagle's maneuverability rating, it is impossible for it to make dive attacks every round and still keep up its minimum airspeed. I had the dubious pleasure of pitlording a fight that involved Luni's were-eagle and her FOUR eagle allies. I have become an unofficial expert on the VERY tiresome aerial combat rules. In round 6 Kisandra full-attack, because she's next to TWH. True. But she is next to TWH and is in the middle of a readied action action. She's waiting to pinpoint TWH so she can attack. You can't ready a full-attack action. She should only get a single attack. I hope, I answered everything correctly, please let Macbrae respond too. It is allready late here in Germany. But you both can discuss the issues. I'll have a look this tomorrow morning and fix it after your agreement. I thank you for your desire to get everything right. It would be great if there were more pitlords like you! (I'll bet I just made myself really popular with that statement...) TM |

I had the dubious pleasure of pitlording a fight that involved Luni's were-eagle and her FOUR eagle allies. I have become an unofficial expert on the VERY tiresome aerial combat rules. Actually, you need to look at Kisandra alittle closer. She isn't a normal eagle and possess the Hover feat. As such, she doesn't have to maintain forward flight speed at all. She is very different from Luni's wereeagle's allies. Hover [General] Prerequisite Fly speed. Benefit When flying, the creature can halt its forward motion and hover in place as a move action. It can then fly in any direction, including straight down or straight up, at half speed, regardless of its maneuverability. If a creature begins its turn hovering, it can hover in place for the turn and take a full-round action. A hovering creature cannot make wing attacks, but it can attack with all other limbs and appendages it could use in a full attack. The creature can instead use a breath weapon or cast a spell instead of making physical attacks, if it could normally do so. If a creature of Large size or larger hovers within 20 feet of the ground in an area with lots of loose debris, the draft from its wings creates a hemispherical cloud with a radius of 60 feet. The winds so generated can snuff torches, small campfires, exposed lanterns, and other small, open flames of non-magical origin. Clear vision within the cloud is limited to 10 feet. Creatures have concealment at 15 to 20 feet (20% miss chance). At 25 feet or more, creatures have total concealment (50% miss chance, and opponents cannot use sight to locate the creature). Those caught in the cloud must succeed on a Concentration check (DC 10 + ½ creature’s HD) to cast a spell. Normal Without this feat, a creature must keep moving while flying unless it has perfect maneuverability. |
| MindWandererB01-30-06, 07:02 PM | @kedi: I did say that I was giving shadowmaster until tomorrow! He PM'ed me back about an hour ago and said he'd fix it.... Well, you two can work it out between you. Either way the result will be the same. No changes need to be made to my character sheet except which fight I link to. |
| Warclone01-30-06, 07:16 PM | @TelinArtho: regarding: Vivi Ornitier (Dr.Funk) vs Felan Turok (TelinArtho): Warclone Was about to run this fight then I notice you have not sent me tactics for Felan. I tried PMing you and your inbox is full. I will run my other fight before this one, but if I get to it again and I still have no tactics I will run you without tactics. |

I shouldn't have been that quick though. There really aren't that big changes, a missed ranged attack and a succesul grapple. I'll keep the log and edit it in. |
| Iced01-30-06, 07:45 PM | Dr. Hobo vs barghests is up. Fight (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8353083&postcount=123) it's an interesting one... |

Those caught in the cloud must succeed on a Concentration check (DC 10 + ½ creature’s HD) to cast a spell. Normal Without this feat, a creature must keep moving while flying unless it has perfect maneuverability. Regardless, she can't both climb and dive in the same round, which is what I was driving at. Also, if she does make a dive attack, she MUST continue on flying because she can't hover (a move action) in the same round that she makes a diving charge (a full-round action). You're right, though, I did miss the Hover feat in her description, so she can move and attack and then full-attack the next round and never touch the ground. It's handy. Edit: No, she can't. These rules are so confusing. If Kisandra moves (move action) and attacks (std action) she can't hover (also a move action). However, she could move (move action), hover (move action) and then full attack NEXT round (full attack action) and hover (free per feat description in this situation). So, maybe not as handy in this instance as we thought. TM |
| MitzaVolchenko01-30-06, 08:53 PM | I don't know if the sleeping would wake the other or not....I would say yes, but that is purely my opinion. Nothing to back in up. As for using the wand, I would say no, because the gladiator has no way to know what the command word to activate the wand is, so the only way possible would be a UMD check to activate an item blindly, or to identify the item to get the command word. On the first point...No, the sleeping does not awaken...see Sybil vs. Challack. I hate to say it, but there are too many errors in that fight to let it stand. It is a UMD check every time Sybil uses the wand of MM, hence the if it is cranky switch to bow at range. There is nothing in the rules that says one cannot use a stolen wand (how does one use one that they find on campaign?). Death doesn't take an AOO for standing up from his prone position nor does Sybil ever attempt to move away. Going further back, Sybil should have been achieving LOS and casting Lullaby two rounds sooner which prevents Death from getting to the waiting stage and stops him from swapping out initiatives which gives Sybil the edge on init when the CDG fails. Or barring that she should have been readied to cast lullaby on LOS/range of him. It is a standard action unlike sleep which may be readied while she is hiding. She can remain near cover and still do that. That defaults Death to shooting, not readying, and again prevents the initiative swap. *sighs* It will likely remain a loss, but it needs to be reworked. Particularly the UMD checks and the init swap. |
| Macbrea01-30-06, 08:53 PM | Her real purpose in this fight was to be someone with a +20 spot that would pinpoint The White Hand and give me a square to shoot at. I really didn't expect her to do a huge amount. By her continuing to take single shots at you that allows me to move 45ft an shoot at your square. |
| Turin01-30-06, 08:54 PM | @ Malither76: sorry, one last minor item for Evaine vs Ivangar... you forgot to note that I used my crawling tattoo out of my expendibles. I'll make sure it gets onto my sheet, but if you could make that minor edit for the record, that'd be swell. |
| Warclone01-30-06, 09:16 PM | Question: What am I supposed to do??? I was assigned this fight: Solomon (Warclone) vs Gaston Dar'ath (waywreth): Kaigan But I found it here: Solomon vs. Gaston DTFarstar ran it last week. I guess it was overlooked? I'm not going to run it again, if it was already run. There were uncorrected, grevious errors in the fight. Some people disputed that the errors required a rerun, but Pitlords and LLMadCow confirmed my stance on the issue and it was thus scheduled for a rerun. LLMadCow's clarification of the violated delay rules of the previous fight. The fight is meant to be rerun. |
| TelinArtho01-30-06, 09:28 PM | I've sent a few of my tactics: Felan, Faelto and Ural (against Drac). I'm still working on the rest. @Warclone - this post was made at 11am (EST) on 1/27. But regardless - tactics have been rewritten and resent as of now. |
| MindWandererB01-30-06, 09:32 PM | There were uncorrected, grevious errors in the fight. Some people disputed that the errors required a rerun, but Pitlords and LLMadCow confirmed my stance on the issue and it was thus scheduled for a rerun. LLMadCow's clarification of the violated delay rules of the previous fight. The fight is meant to be rerun.I'm not at all sure that LLMC confirmed anything. The issue was where one character is unable to interact with the other; the debate was whether, given an invisible summoner as the opponent, one is considered "delaying" when all one does is run from the summons. LLMC did not have the necessary information to answer the question; he did not realize that the defender (Gaston in this case) was completely unable to interact directly with his opponent. The competing argument was that fighting the summons does not in any way contribute to progressing the fight, except to take damage. My analogy was Wall of Fire: Astral Construct is like Wall of Fire in that it is basically just a spell effect that deals damage; a player faced with a Wall of Fire and an invisible opponent shouldn't be obligated to walk into the Wall just because that's the only type of interaction he can perform. LLMC's answer was basically two sentences: 1) "As a general rule, running away in fear and avoiding a player just long enough to expire their ability/power/effect is not very meaningful." This is true in general; however, when the ability/power/effect renders the other player invincible, then this is the only possible tactic. 2) "Meaningful interaction is really up to the discretion of the player running the fight." Which is basically just rule zero, and thus cannot be argued. |
| waywreth01-30-06, 09:42 PM | The Gaston v Solomon fight was set for a rerun this week per PM by Pitlord to myself and Warclone. I'd greatly prefer that it be run as such... I'd really really really not want it to go to 3 weeks. But we still have 2 days left so here's hoping. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-30-06, 09:48 PM | The further adventures of Kimahri Ronso may be viewed here. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=8267671#post8267671) It shouldn't have surprised me that he just waded in, but it did...and it surprised the lions which really is what counted. Week 3 is the real kicker for Kimahri...we'll see how it goes ;) |
| TheMagister01-30-06, 09:51 PM | Her real purpose in this fight was to be someone with a +20 spot that would pinpoint The White Hand and give me a square to shoot at. I really didn't expect her to do a huge amount. By her continuing to take single shots at you that allows me to move 45ft an shoot at your square. Yeah, tell that to Luni (underhanded shot at Sdentch's last fight). I'm not bitter. =/ Silly lion wouldn't attack... As long as you agree on the other issues, I'm satisfied with letting Pittbull edit the fight. OH! Something that keeps getting pushed under the rug is TWH's improved feint feat. When he bases you while he's invisible, and then attacks (and misses, drat the luck), and then you step back 5' and cast chill metal, TWH should be able to 5' step, feint, and then attack you. For some reason Pittbull doesn't see it that way. I hope he sees this particular post and responds... TM |
| TelinArtho01-30-06, 09:54 PM | @Warclone about Nyc vs Donak So where are the listen checks for Nycalik? If Donak - at any point was pinpointed - I wanted to have a javelin thrown. Also, during the first round that Nyc caught him in his blindsight - Nyc should have drawn a javelin so it should have been in hand. |
| Gonbow01-30-06, 10:00 PM | Cyra vs Pirotess is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8356345&postcount=131) (Sheets and Tactics) and here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8356345&postcount=132) (Fight proper). @lonewolf Any word on Lortavos vs Gundir? I was hoping it'd be pretty straightforward of a fight. @MitzaVolchenko Since the fight's sheet and tactics are up, I assume the FFA will be coming along sometime tonight, yeah? |
| TelinArtho01-30-06, 10:07 PM | @Usurpator 1. In round 3, I see no reason why you would choose that particular course of action for Ana - moving away to take an AoO, 2. In round 3, also, the elementals should be acting after me, per this portion of my tactic: Once she has LOS on Uilo, she'll instruct the elementals to delay until her spell is cast. Once Uilo is in sight, Ana will cast hold person on her. 3. In round 4, I don't see a miss chance on Husk for attacking Ana. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-30-06, 10:11 PM | @MitzaVolchenko Since the fight's sheet and tactics are up, I assume the FFA will be coming along sometime tonight, yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah...it is the combo I dread most to run...casters and psychics with 90 million contingencies many of which it is absolutely impossible for a character to have any way of knowing are the case. I am about to get started, but Invisible Castle keeps tweaking for me so I am debating the craptacular option of using real dice while I procrastinate by reading my email. |
| lonewolf01-30-06, 10:35 PM | @lonewolf Any word on Lortavos vs Gundir? I was hoping it'd be pretty straightforward of a fight. Fight is up. Quite a number of natural 20ies on both sides. |
| Huan01-30-06, 10:53 PM | Bares bones of Haizan vs 3 Drow Warriors (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8356698) is up. Short Version: Nope... it was very much a setup-knock down fight. |
| Erithmu01-30-06, 10:55 PM | Fight is up. Quite a number of natural 20ies on both sides. gp rewards are a little off for both. They change from gp=xp at 5th level ... here I only point this out as I have to do Lortavos' guild earnings, (which could you add to the fight) |
| DTFarstar01-30-06, 11:02 PM | @Warclone - Really, even under LLMC's clarification, I feel completely justified in my decision against the delay. Your opponent was running from the constructs because there was nothing at all for him to gain in fighting them. It wouldn't progress the fight at all for him, so he avoided them. He would have loved to have engaged you, but you were invisible per your tactics and thus it was impossible for him. Per distance with your move silently there was 0% chance he could pinpoint you with listen so even had he had a contingency for Energy Raying you instead of using Energy Missile, he couldn't have ever found you to do so. Gaston was withdrawing from your constructs because he had no way to interact with you and he was waiting for a way to pop up. If I had penalized someone for delaying, I feel I would have been justified nailing you with it for being invis, but that also does not seem at all fair. Especially since I, as Pitlord, I knew that making you visible would lead to your death, even if you made the save minimum damage halved would be 4 damage and would stop you from manifesting Constructs WAY earlier than you had and would more likely just get you flat out killed in one round(Avg Dam=18 you only have 11 hp). I realize you also had problems with the positioning of some of your constructs, and I do agree that there was one, maybe two, that were ill placed, but I placed them with my understanding of the rules(You decide target range etc. when you begin casting the spell, not when you finish and as such your opponent would always get a full round to act in between you selecting where to put the construct and it actually appearing. ). So, I understand that some of them were not what you wanted, but I also understood you couldn't put them in the air(per conjuration/metacreativity) and with your opponents superior(45ft to 40ft) move speed, with withdrawal and double moves they would mainly only get their initial charge attack and they and you just could not keep up with him as he avoided them. Anyway, it is out of my hands now and I had a horrible week when I ran the fight so I know it was not my best, but it was a difficult fight to run with several hard pitlord decisions. Maybe Kaigan will have an easier time of it with your tactics this week, I don't know. I guess it really doesn't matter, but I felt that you were really offended/angry at the way I ran the fight so I still feel the need to defend myself against your accusations. Anyway, just ignore me I guess, it is not my fight anymore, Chris |
| MitzaVolchenko01-30-06, 11:46 PM | @DTFarstar I still think you did a fine job with it. @Gonbow, Sunwolf, and Begferdeth I just had a poweer blink eat the first 9 rounds of your fight. I was rolling manually which means that I cannot reconstruct it reasonably nor do I have the time to restart it tonight. Becuase I did not receive the final tactics until afternoon Saturday it did not get done when it needed to for my schedule. Additionally, in the future please write your tactics sequentially and then put contingencies at the bottom making notes for things like familiars at the top of your tactics. I had three false starts before getting as far as I did because something new popped out at me every time I read the tactics (except for Ch'ch'ili whose tactics were incredibly simple). If someone wants to pick it up to get it done tonight, be my guest. Otherwise I will do it tomorrow night when I get home from work (after 8pm EST). Set up is here. | Ariel2301-30-06, 11:51 PM | Evaine Dreamseeker (Ariel23) vs Ivangar the Exile (Turin) is up Thanks! Turin already commented about the FF. Any errors there were (if any) wouldn't affect the fight's outcome. Her only chance was to remain ungrappled after the initial invisible attack, which didn't happen. Failing that, she needed phenomenal rolling. You may note that Invisibility is still listed (sort of) as being active for the whole fight. I'm assuming that's not the case. Thanks, Malither! |
| Warclone01-30-06, 11:55 PM | @DTFarstar: We all have bad weeks, and I hold nothing against you for the way you ran the fight given the circumstances. As far as the delay applicaiton choices are concerned, I understand the arguments that are being made completely and I disagree wholeheartedly with them. I have already given my reasons and I will hold from another debate until Kaigan has run the fight. |
| Warclone01-31-06, 12:06 AM | @Warclone about Nyc vs Donak So where are the listen checks for Nycalik? If Donak - at any point was pinpointed - I wanted to have a javelin thrown. Also, during the first round that Nyc caught him in his blindsight - Nyc should have drawn a javelin so it should have been in hand. here (Nyc listen, horse MS, don MS (1d20+11-15=2, 1d20+1=3, 1d20+8=28)) here (Nyc listen, horse MS, don MS (1d20+11-15=6, 1d20+1=5, 1d20+8=10)) and here Nyc listen, horse MS, don MS (1d20+11-9=7, 1d20-4=2, 1d20+4=14) After that point it is straight sailing for the horse and rider. Your listen checks are at a -10 penalty from then on giving you an adjusted +1. The horse has +1. While maybe if it rolled a 1 and you rolled a 20 you could pinpoint it for a round while taking 50% miss chance and -6+ range penalties, note also I did not grant them the invisibility bonus against you which they deserved and would have dropped your AC by 5 and given them an additional +2 to hit. |

I don't think you could possibly wake up if SoH was being used on you. Roll d%. A 01-30 result indicates that something (a design, inscription, or the like) provides some clue to the wand’s function, and 31-100 indicates no special qualities. @Niqil, Troublewolf, Kaigan (and parties interested in the meaning of "delay") I don't see how the dogged pursuit of someone is considered a "delaying tactic" when someone is doing everything in their power to attack the opponent. Chasing them around may certainly be a losing tactic, it's just not a delaying one. If there is not any meaningful interaction, it is not because of a gladiator doing their best to separate your head from your shoulders. As a semantic aside, following the barbarian's tactics either "to the letter" or in spirit will lead to melee in both cases. |
| Snommelp01-31-06, 12:28 AM | The monsters Noko and Galagith took a very long time to finish their fight. If someone would be willing to take Sir Valkin vs. Boraxx off of my hands, it would be much appreciated. Otherwise, that fight will be very late. |
| Kaigan01-31-06, 01:30 AM | Anyone want to take a fight from me? I'm giving out the Cher vs. Trixie fight. I'll forward tactics as soon as someone is interested. |
| Gonbow01-31-06, 01:38 AM | Fight is up. Quite a number of natural 20ies on both sides. Well, aside from the gold which was already mentioned, there isn't anything mechanically wrong that I can see; you have my initial grapple check as a +5 instead of a +6, but one point wouldn't give the initial grapple to me. Gundir just got incredibly lucky with his grapple checks and his dogs rolls. Ah well. @Mitz That's too bad; I feel your pain. I had that happen near the end of a 40+ turn stealth archery battle. My apologizes if my convoluted tactics made the fight a pain to run; as it stands I didn't have the most important contingency of all, so eh :P |
| NiQil01-31-06, 01:41 AM | Just noticed this in the fight Cat posted for Baelin vs the hydra: Baelin the Shadow is the winner and gains 2400 xp and 3400 gold. He also steals 224 gold from NiQil. WTF? When did I become designated punchmonkey? :D LOL Just for that Cat, methinks it's about time to audit all of your characters and post all the violations....whether they are there or not :P |
| kedi01-31-06, 03:22 AM | Anyone want to take a fight from me? I'm giving out the Cher vs. Trixie fight. I'll forward tactics as soon as someone is interested.I just woke up now... But I can handle it after breakfast (i.e. In an hour). |
| Kaigan01-31-06, 03:28 AM | I just woke up now... But I can handle it after breakfast (i.e. In an hour). Thanks much, I'll forward tactics now, then I'll PM pitlords. Edit: Just sent the tactics. Edit2: Another Fight is up. Solomon vs. Gaston Week 2 Please look over it, I hope nothing too drastic. I still have 4 fights to run, and two to edit, so I doubt I will have time to change anything. |
| kedi01-31-06, 03:47 AM | Recieved the Tactics for Cher vs Trexie. No problem, Kaigan. |
| Pittbull01-31-06, 04:24 AM | Regarding the full round attack in round 6: It was not a readied action. Kisandra readied the previous round and in the full-attack is on her next turn. Regarding the steady attack of Kisandra: OK, she can't make dive attacks, but she can single-move and attack every round, she doesn't need to hover for it. Regarding chill metal: Yes the hammer and the rapier get a saving-throw. But since the shield is affected, you get the full damage, unless TWH drops it. Regarding the usage of blinding- or feint-ability: Since it doesn't work to make a five-foot step as a part of a readied action, Mektos won't ready, but wait. TWH comes closer and attacks, becoming visible. then, next round, Mektos make a 5'-step and casts chill-metall, now THW follows up, using his move-action to feint and then attacks (or activates his blinding ability?) and then attacks with the rapier. Is this OK, for you both? Another option would be, Mektos readies and casts the spell defensively, do like this better? Please, respond quickly. |
| Kaigan01-31-06, 04:30 AM | Another fight up. Some amazing rolls in Lord Frost vs. The First Horseman Please look over. |
| TheMagister01-31-06, 04:32 AM | Regarding the full round attack in round 6: It was not a readied action. Kisandra readied the previous round and in the full-attack is on her next turn. That explains it, then. Regarding the steady attack of Kisandra: OK, she can't make dive attacks, but she can single-move and attack every round, she doesn't need to hover for it. I don't believe any edit needs to actually be made on this point, as none of the attacks actually hit (if any did hit, elimination of any positive modifiers to the attack roll should of course be applied). Thank you for taking the time to read up on this! Regarding chill metal: Yes the hammer and the rapier get a saving-throw. But since the shield is affected, you get the full damage, unless TWH drops it. Since the shield does not cause damage until the second full turn of the spell's duration, TWH should have no problem activating it and then dropping it. Regardless, "full damage" should only be 1 point of damage since the shield is only 5 lbs (less than 20% of TWH's minimum body weight). I will remedy the lack of height and weight before next pairings, btw. It's odd how such details actually sneak up on you and become important, isn't it? Regarding the usage of blinding- or feint-ability: Since it doesn't work to make a five-foot step as a part of a readied action, Mektos won't ready, but wait. TWH comes closer and attacks, becoming visible. then, next round, Mektos make a 5'-step and casts chill-metall, now THW follows up, using his move-action to feint and then attacks (or activates his blinding ability?) and then attacks with the rapier. Is this OK, for you both? This works for me. Personally, I think the readied action much overused. Delay is better in almost all circumstances. Another option would be, Mektos readies and casts the spell defensively, do like this better? No, I'm happy with the previous suggestion. Please, respond quickly. As you wish! TM |
| Pittbull01-31-06, 04:36 AM | That explains it, then. TM Macbrea stated that it is not your body weight, but the weight of your metal equipment, so 5lbs are likely over the 20%. |
| TheMagister01-31-06, 04:37 AM | If I may: Please don't forget the initiative consequences of delaying on Mektos' part. Also, (although I have a sneaking memory of Macbrea addressing this...) think about Mektos wasting a round trying to magic missile a shielded TWH. Thanks for being so dogged in the pursuit of fair and complete combats. Know that I do appreciate it. TM |
| TheMagister01-31-06, 04:42 AM | Macbrea stated that it is not your body weight, but the weight of your metal equipment, so 5lbs are likely over the 20%. I must disagree with Macbrea. It is probably the language barrier again. Please read this with patience: A creature takes cold damage if its equipment is chilled. It (the creature) takes full damage if its (the creature's) armor is affected or if it (the creature) is holding, touching, wearing, or carrying metal weighing one-fifth of its (the creature's) weight. The creature takes minimum damage (1 point or 2 points; see the table) if it’s (the creature is) not wearing metal armor and the metal that it’s (the creature is) carrying weighs less than one-fifth of its (the creature's) weight. It is clearly a relationship between the weight of the affected object and the weight of the creature carrying the affected object. Which makes sense, seeing as how a tiny 2 lb. freezing dagger would not (and should not) be as dangerous as a 40 lb suit of freezing armor. TM |
| Macbrea01-31-06, 04:48 AM | Just go ahead and delay with Mektos. In truth, he would never ready by my tactics. It is mostly just move about and shoot when kisandra attacks something or my target becomes visable. If I already have my crossbow in my hand and we haven't reached round 25 as per my tactics keep using the crossbow. Mektos is got somewhat of a wisdom and does know that his opponent has a shield spell. He doesn't know wether the individual has it up at that point but my tactics were written in such a fashion to assume my opponent would get up his shield spell after a couple rounds. Yes, he is delaying to round 25 by plinking low damage crossbow bolts at his opponent. It is a viable tactic to wait out a spell while attempting to do damage. My tactics were written in such a fashion that it was taken into effect. |
| Pittbull01-31-06, 04:49 AM | As Macbrea stated too, it says: It (the creature) takes full damage if its (the creature's) armor is affected or if it (the creature) is holding, touching, wearing, or carrying metal weighing one-fifth of its (the creature's) weight. Shields belong to armor, so you're fully affected. |
| TheMagister01-31-06, 04:54 AM | This is of course, your call, and one I will no longer dispute with you, although I think you are incorrect. Shields are not armor. They do not even provide armor bonuses to AC. A mithril bucker weighs only 2.5 lbs, only slightly more than a dagger. Would it deal more damage than a dagger? A mithril heavy shield weighs only 5 lbs., less than a greatsword. Would it deal more damage than a greatsword? I bow to your call. TM |
| Pittbull01-31-06, 04:59 AM | @Macbrea: Any statement from your side? Do shield belong shields to armor, being affected by chill metal? I'm really not sure about this. |
| Macbrea01-31-06, 05:07 AM | Honestly, that is a GMs Call. Shields are created using Craft(armorsmithing). Shields appear on the Armor tables. Shields appear on the Magic Armor Tables. Shield give a Shield bonus to your AC. Shields are not effected by being Tiny size or smaller with the 1/2 adjustment to armor bonus. In a game I would rule that they are probably not really armor as they give a shield bonus. But, that really would be dependant on each individual GM ruling. |
| Stormwind01-31-06, 05:10 AM | Cyra vs Pirotess is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8356345&postcount=131) (Sheets and Tactics) and here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8356345&postcount=132) (Fight proper). @Gonbow: Thanks for running the fight. There are a few points to mention but none of them will change the results: -The tattoo of Chameleon last for 10 minutes .... that's 100 rounds, not just 10. Thus in round 12 Piro should not spot Cyra. -Cyra's psychic strike damage is 1d8, not 1d6 as listed in round 7 and round 12 -Rounds 10 & 11 you have have a typo with Cyra locating herself (it should be Cyra locating Piro) - only the text is wrong, rolls are correct. -In round 13 Piro uses scorching ray, which cannot possibly hit Cyra since it has a Close range and Cyra is on the ceiling 50ft up. You also mention that calculating the 3d distances is difficult ... I will add a section detailing the horizontal changes in range (i.e. floor ranges) when Cyra is on the ceiling for future pitlords. @Cerebus, in Piro's tactics, you mention about the crawling tattoo. It is one of the two sample crawling tattoo's mentioned in the SRD under psionic universal items. I will also go through and change the formatting on my char sheet to try to make it firefox compliant. |

I was certain that you would see my point, and I am pleased that you are also so fair-minded, even to your character's detriment. As you said, it is the GM's call, and I will abide by it without further comment. TM |

OK, as I said, I'm not sure about this too. But as you said you'd rule the same as TM did so only the minor damage aplies. I'll have to change a lot in this fight now. It'll be done way before next pairings. Perhaps I have to roll some new rounds and cancel some previous rolls. I kindly ask to accept this. |
| kedi01-31-06, 05:21 AM | God, Kaigan, this is the most boring duel, period... XD It'll be up approximately in an hour. |
| Macbrea01-31-06, 05:22 AM | That is fine by me. I am good with however the fight turns out. |
| TheMagister01-31-06, 05:28 AM | I as well. You have asked and heard and responded with great patience. I am satisfied that you will do well. TM |
| Kaigan01-31-06, 07:01 AM | God, Kaigan, this is the most boring duel, period... XD It'll be up approximately in an hour. At least your not doing 2 ECL 8's versus 2 lvl 5 trog clerics and 4 hound archons. Lol. This should be up soon. |
| kedi01-31-06, 07:03 AM | At least your not doing 2 ECL 8's versus 2 lvl 5 trog clerics and 4 hound archons. Lol. Anyways, duel is up. Check it to see the results. |
| Usurpator01-31-06, 07:31 AM | @Usurpator 1. In round 3, I see no reason why you would choose that particular course of action for Ana - moving away to take an AoO, Your tactics state you want to gain LOS and cast hold person, and I did that by the most efficient means possible. What action do you see a reason for then? I did not make this decision lightly, I based on it on Anakala's knowledge of the situation and her intentions, and concluded this was the best possible choice for you to have any chance at a kill. Other options were: 1. Engaging Husk in melee combat (stupid and nonsense) 2. Defending yourself, with Husk attacking you and with Feradeth possibly striking at any moment (no gain) 3. Flee while recalling your elementals (no gain) 4. Using a Withdraw to avoid the AoO from Husk, but not being able to cast hold person at Uilo that same turn. This would mean that Anakala would be chased down by Husk, attacked under flanking and has to cast hold person under duress, while Uilo may have buffed more. You air elementals could also be dying in there (for all Anakala knows), so you want to engage Uilo asap. (less gain and lower probability of success than chosen option) 2. In round 3, also, the elementals should be acting after me, per this portion of my tactic: In the beginning you delayed until you were after the elementals. Then you wanted to have the air elementals delay to act after you "once gained LOS on Uilo" unfortunately, once you did gain LOS, your elementals had already acted. So while you gave the command, it had no effect any more that turn. I know what your intention was, and if it would have made sense, I would have Anakala give the command earlier, but since she had little idea what was going on inside the mist (and Air Elementals are pretty stupid at Int 4), she had to move into the mist first to ascertain the situation. Possible she wouldn't even have had the movement to get LOS on Uilo. What then would she gain by asking the elementals to delay? Sure, it might have been better in hindsight (and with knowing all the pertinent facts), but Anakala didn't have the luxury. 3. In round 4, I don't see a miss chance on Husk for attacking Ana. Actually, I woke up this morning thinking, ***** I forgot the miss chance! (fight ran longer than expected last night) I will edit this in once I get to my dice. |
| Pittbull01-31-06, 08:59 AM | Mektos vs TWH (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8352548) has been edited. I hope everything is right now. Sorry, TM, with so much bad luck, you cannot win a fight, exspecially when your oponent rolls two 20! on attacks in the last round. The roller really hated you. Sorry. |
| TroubleWolf01-31-06, 10:02 AM | @TroubleWolf and NiQil: I can rerun the fight... On second thought, Kaigan, don't worry about it. You have too much on your plate, and it's not that important to me. I'll just chalk it up to needing to write more inclusive tactics. :) |
| Warclone01-31-06, 10:14 AM | Thanks much, I'll forward tactics now, then I'll PM pitlords. Edit: Just sent the tactics. Edit2: Another Fight is up. Solomon vs. Gaston Week 2 Please look over it, I hope nothing too drastic. I still have 4 fights to run, and two to edit, so I doubt I will have time to change anything. Thanks for running the fight. There is one large error that should be easy to correct, but will most likely change the course of the fight. My constructs have +4 to hit, not +3 (there is no penalty tohit for higher ground). Also, my constructs should have maneuvered to flank, like I asked, giving them another +2 to hit. |
| SauroGrenom01-31-06, 10:17 AM | Lonewolf, Did the Kracknol vs Tezca fight get run yet? I may have missed it, so I thought I'd ask. |
| TheMagister01-31-06, 10:18 AM | Mektos vs TWH (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8352548) has been edited. I hope everything is right now. Sorry, TM, with so much bad luck, you cannot win a fight, exspecially when your oponent rolls two 20! on attacks in the last round. The roller really hated you. Sorry. Thanks! Looks good. I still would wish for the use of the blinding ability of the shield, but after how supportive you've been, I guess I'll let it slide. =) TM |

I think he did flank Gaston whenever possible... what rounds would have hit instead of missing? Also Gaston might be the worst user of the longsword ever. I don't think he hit once! Hah! |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 10:51 AM | here (Nyc listen, horse MS, don MS (1d20+11-15=2, 1d20+1=3, 1d20+8=28)) here (Nyc listen, horse MS, don MS (1d20+11-15=6, 1d20+1=5, 1d20+8=10)) and here Nyc listen, horse MS, don MS (1d20+11-9=7, 1d20-4=2, 1d20+4=14) After that point it is straight sailing for the horse and rider. Where am I getting a -10 penalty to my listen? Because of distance? Distance penalties are assessed according to the closest location - so if he's starting at 100ft every round, I guess that's fine - but if I'm closing much of that - then it should be much less. |
| lonewolf01-31-06, 11:00 AM | Lonewolf, Did the Kracknol vs Tezca fight get run yet? I may have missed it, so I thought I'd ask. Fight is up. |
| kedi01-31-06, 11:03 AM | Regarding Sepitroth (kedi) vs Weiniete Windershins (Skojar); Shadowmaster hasn't been around for like, ever. I don't want this duel to be postponed, because I'm considering having Sepitroth going on a quest this week, but the way as it is now... Crap. Can anyone run it? |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 11:07 AM | @Warclone - in Felan's fight, you need to mark down both uses of the poison as they are prebuffs and do not carry over. Otherwise, I am fine with the fight. As to Felan winning - he likely would have with his original tactics - but that's what happens when I'm not told that my sent tactics weren't received until the nth hour... |
| SoulLord01-31-06, 11:08 AM | At least your not doing 2 ECL 8's versus 2 lvl 5 trog clerics and 4 hound archons. Lol. This should be up soon. He he he I hope we are luckier this time is a tough match nontheless. |

| TelinArtho01-31-06, 11:14 AM | Has Dr. Funk run my fight yet? I can't seem to find it, nor can I find any posting about it. Hmmm- he was supposed to run it over the weekend when he was staying at my house... He's at school now, but I'll drop him a PM to give (me at least) a status on it. If he needs someone to finish it - I'll be able to in a pinch I think (and I can grab tactics at that point). |
| Gonbow01-31-06, 11:27 AM | @Gonbow: Thanks for running the fight. I looked up Chameleon and I could have sworn it said 1 min a level last night, but I was rather tired; my apologizes for that and the other slight errors, but as you say, they don't change the outcome, though if Piro cant hit Cyra with the scorching ray she would probably go to the next thing on her list, which was a scroll of magic missile instead of the scroll of true strike.. I'm sure she'd prefer to spend the cheaper scroll. I have no idea why I thought psi-strike was 1d6; I even had a soulknife of my own for awhile! |
| King Uther01-31-06, 11:32 AM | @Anyone with a little free time Kaigan was assigned Ajora's miniquest to join the PSI Guild. He was planning on running it like an arena fight. I am not sure what he plans to do or if he'll have time, so if anyone has a free 10 minutes to do the fight that would be awesome. It's designed to be an EL3 MQ, but EL4 is fine. Doesn't matter the opponent, as my primary goal would be to one-shot kill as any other fight. I have to go to work, but I'll be back on for my lunch break in a few hours. I never thought of it before, but I believe Ajora has been designed to be the polar opposite of Maven. They would be each other's nemesis if Maven wasn't an old greedy woman who never fought. |
| King Uther01-31-06, 11:33 AM | Chameleon is a weird power like that. Some sources do in fact say 1 minute per level, but the intended is 10 minutes per level. |
| Mal-201-31-06, 11:42 AM | You also mention that calculating the 3d distances is difficult ... I will add a section detailing the horizontal changes in range (i.e. floor ranges) when Cyra is on the ceiling for future pitlords. If anyone is having trouble calculating distances (either 2d or 3d), I wrote a quick little calculator to measure distances using the D&D rules (i.e., diagonals are 5 feet for the first, 10 feet for the second, etc.) http://wormhole.ath.cx/coco/coco_dist.php You should be able to just copy and paste the coordinates for the two characters and it will give you the distance from one to the other. |

| Kaigan01-31-06, 12:03 PM | Thanks for running the fight. There is one large error that should be easy to correct, but will most likely change the course of the fight. My constructs have +4 to hit, not +3 (there is no penalty tohit for higher ground). Also, my constructs should have maneuvered to flank, like I asked, giving them another +2 to hit. You are right, it should be +4, but I did flank origionally, so I just need to add a +1 to see if they hit, and if I recall it shouldn't change anything. I've got 3hrs of class coming up, so i'll check this later. @King Uther: Don't worry, I'll get Ajora's mq up tonight. In other news: I need someone to take the Drac vs Ural fight. I can send tactics in later this afternoon. After two hours of sleep, I just learned that I have a midterm on thurs, so yeah, analytical chem, joy. Anyways, the ECL 8 fight will be up this afternoon, just one Hound to go, and Troublewolf... are you sure? I can re run if you want. Edit: @Warclone: I just checked and the extra +1 attack will not factor in anywhere. Now to answer some PM's: @Mitza and NiQil: I will be redoing some of the fight, starting after the CDG. @Drac: Thanks for the PM, I now see the tactics. Hopefully someone can take this fight.... Please!. @King Uther: Your MQ of you destroying something completely :D will be up later this afternoon. @All: I have class now, so yeah, with 2 hours of sleep.... yada yada, rant rant. Let's just say that 3 rockstar energydrinks can do wonders. Anyways, I'll be finishing up this afternoon and send tactics to whoever takes Ural vs Drac. I just can't do anymore... the reviews and Ajora's mq is all I have left in me this week. Thanks. |

| SauroGrenom01-31-06, 12:38 PM | Fight is up. Curse the dice!!! Jesus! Alright, well the only thing I noticed is that Tezca cannot use improved grab on creatures the same size. Since Kracknol is large, that's not an option. Kracknol won the grapple check none the less, but curse Tezca's luck and Kracknol's bad rolling. That's 2 of Kracknol's 4 total losses caused by a complete inability to hit because of realy bad dice rolls at critical times. |
| Warclone01-31-06, 12:44 PM | @Kaigan: I just got to look at the fight breifly before I left. Here's my full analysis: Round 14: Gas: 5ft steps up, and manifests a 4pp vigor. Sol: AC 3 moves 10ft, and attacks, AC 4 moves 10 ft and attacks. [AoO from Gas: 6+1higher-4FD=7 vs. AC 18, miss; AC3 Attack, AC4 Attack: 2+3=5, miss, 11+3=14, miss] Sol Finishes Construct 5, uses body fuel to regain 4pp taking 2 ability damage. Current Damage STR 2/DEX 9/CON5 Begins casting another Construct. AC 5, double moves as Gas is too far away to charge.Since his AC is 17 this round, my second construct should hit given: +4 instead of +3 bonus, and then there is no reason (since they have to move anyway) that they do not move to flank, at which point it would hit ac17 exactly. sol finishes summoning Con 6 which flies towards Gas, Con 7 appears and flies towards Gas This is another very big error I missed this morning. My tactics specifically do not allow me to summon constructs that do not get an attack the first round of their existance. This applies to all three above quotes. I say make sure they get an attack every round, and suggest that you space summons out while moving to accomplish this. That means not summoning unless they can charge and hit the round they come into existance. The only really legal action you can have me take is move me up and have me summon next round. The above will give me multiple additional attacks and 1 additional hit, which could easily deal the 15 damage it would take to kill Gaston. |
| Pittbull01-31-06, 12:45 PM | Drac (Dracazar) vs Ural of Promethia (TelinArtho): Kaigan Looking for someone to take it. If nobody does it in the next 16hours, I'll run the fight tomorrow during my work. Just send me the tactics. |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 12:48 PM | If nobody does it in the next 16hours, I'll run the fight tomorrow during my work. Just send me the tactics. Tactics forwarded for Ural just in case. |
| waywreth01-31-06, 12:49 PM | The above will give me multiple additional attacks and 1 additional hit, which could easily deal the 15 damage it would take to kill Gaston. Until Gaston vigors for another 20 hp... But seriously I don't care who wins this fight anymore, just please get it done this week if at all possible. |
| Warclone01-31-06, 12:49 PM | @Warclone - in Felan's fight, you need to mark down both uses of the poison as they are prebuffs and do not carry over. Otherwise, I am fine with the fight. As to Felan winning - he likely would have with his original tactics - but that's what happens when I'm not told that my sent tactics weren't received until the nth hour... I understand you're miffed about the tactics thing. You did all you could. I don't check the FoTW thread 3 days before I run fights, as I have other things to do. However, all I know is I didn't receive your tactics and I gave you the opportunity to resend them, so I have a clear consience. |
| Warclone01-31-06, 12:50 PM | Until Gaston vigors for another 20 hp... But seriously I don't care who wins this fight anymore, just please get it done this week if at all possible. Gaston is out of pp by the end of the fight. |
| waywreth01-31-06, 12:53 PM | Gaston is out of pp by the end of the fight. You just fear Gaston's mighty longsword techniques! |
| Warclone01-31-06, 12:53 PM | Where am I getting a -10 penalty to my listen? Because of distance? Distance penalties are assessed according to the closest location - so if he's starting at 100ft every round, I guess that's fine - but if I'm closing much of that - then it should be much less. You are correct-- you can succesfully hear him from his closest spot. However, if you are wanting to pinpoint him in the spot he ends his movement in, you will be making a listen check from the spot he ends his movement in. You can pinpoint him all you want DURING his move, but the only thing that matters is pinpointing him at the end of his move. Which would be impossible in this case. |
| Warclone01-31-06, 12:54 PM | You just fear Gaston's mighty longsword techniques! For what it's worth, you wrote perfect tactics against my character. However, I still think I could end up winning if the changes are made as I requested. |
| SauroGrenom01-31-06, 12:55 PM | Fight is up. I do have one problem with the fight after further consideration. I think Tezca is given too much advantage and too many actions in the 6th round. Tezca hears movement, but does not beat the listencheck by enough to pinpoint. So Tezca should use a move action to find Kracknol not a 5' step. He doesn't know that Kracknol is 5' away, because he has no pinpoint, so he starts to move and "finds" Kracknol unexpectedly with his scent after only moving 5'. This means that Tezca cannot full attack Kracknol that round. He only makes one grapple attempt and doesn't provoke any AoO that turn. Then in round 7 kracknol should be able to attack instead of resisting a grapple. and so on with minor changes cascading thorught the fight. I think Kracknol will get one more round worth of attacks in before he goes down. That may be enough if he connects. |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 12:58 PM | Has Dr. Funk run my fight yet? I can't seem to find it, nor can I find any posting about it. Just received a PM about it - he's working on it now. |

Tezca wrote in his tactics specifically that he only wants to attack Kracknol with a full attack out of invisibility. So there were two options that I could have done: - make a move and try to pinpoint with scent and hope that Kracknol is still there on his next turn for the full attack - make a 5ft step and hope that Kracknol is there. if not use Scent to find out in which direction he is. both options could be done as long as necessary and I chose that the 2nd option is better. It was just luck that it worked on the first try. |

| Kaigan01-31-06, 01:56 PM | @Kaigan: I just got to look at the fight breifly before I left. Here's my full analysis: Since his AC is 17 this round, my second construct should hit given: +4 instead of +3 bonus, and then there is no reason (since they have to move anyway) that they do not move to flank, at which point it would hit ac17 exactly. I will change accordingly. [quote=This is another very big error I missed this morning. | Warclone01-31-06, 02:09 PM | I will change accordingly. The problem is that he is levitating, and you said to stay 50 ft away. You're constructs fly movement is 20' average, meaning that for every 10ft he flies horizontal, it can fly 5 ft up. I think I was being generous in the Construct movement. Well, I also say the most important thing is that they get an attack every round of my life. It's my fault for making 2 contradictory statements, stay 50ft away but make sure they get an attack every round of their life. However, I state that making sure they get an attack every round is the most important priority, so I feel I am justified in requesting you obey that over my other statement when they contradict eachother. Would you be kind enough to make this change? |
| Luni01-31-06, 02:11 PM | I'll take it. Send me tactics via PM. Tactics forwarded. I'll send Pitlords a message. Also, Delaria vs Barthleby is up. |
| waywreth01-31-06, 02:22 PM | However, I state that making sure they get an attack every round is the most important priority, so I feel I am justified in requesting you obey that over my other statement when they contradict each other. Would you be kind enough to make this change? As the constructs must start on the ground and have: Fly (Ex) - The astral construct has physical wings and a fly speed of 20 feet (average). Thus per SRD Average Maneuverability is an "Up angle" of 60° and an "Up speed" of "Half" meaning even with a double move, they can't get 50' up on the first round of existence. Even if Gaston is not 50' up in the air, they can only move up to 10' upwards on a single move, 20' upwards on a double move. |
| Zevox01-31-06, 02:25 PM | Bare bones of Sir Alboreth vs Risal Atess (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8361123) is up. Short Version: Its one of those crazy turn-arounds where one person almost loses by 1 point, then turns things around for the win. Wow :mymy: . Talk about having my butt saved but barely. I'll have to have Alboreth thank the psion that scribed that Tattoo of Biofeedback. I never epected Rissal to try and melee with me outright - I figured he keep hiding and tossing. I need to include more contingencies in my tactics perhaps. Ah well. Can't see any problems to speak of, except that you forgot to list Alboreth's used Tattoo of Animal Affinity in the expenditures, and to list the CEF's gain from his win (is that needed, or am I imagining it and its just that some pitlords like to put it in?). Thanks for running the fight :) . Zevox |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 02:27 PM | Grik vs Zassl (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8361496) is up. |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 02:41 PM | @Pittbull - nice tactic - I didn't even notice the blindness and that killed me. Nicely done. @Luni - not asking for a rerun or adaptation at all - but given that Delaria has the ability to communicate with her allies - why didn't she try to break LOS with the spiritual weapons or even draw her crossbow and start firing? |
| shadowmaster01-31-06, 03:01 PM | septroth vs weiniete is up |
| kedi01-31-06, 03:06 PM | I see Sepitroth vs Wein is up now. Thanks for pitlording, Shadowmaster. EDIT: Can you edit in that I'm making money off of Trapmaking? Thanks in advance. |
| Ariel2301-31-06, 03:35 PM | @Kedi (and Dracazar) Bah! I just realized Giant Bees do 1d4 CON and mine did 1d6 STR. For a lot of non-kobold people--nobody worth knowing--they might prefer the STR damage, but when you have a 4 STR and lose 5 (versus a 14 CON minus 1d4)... I'll PM Kedi, but the only thing I can probably accomplish is sucking up some more of Drac's scrolls. I guess I must feel slighted that Cher's opponent last week took 6, and I only required 4. |
| kedi01-31-06, 03:44 PM | I'm a retard. |
| Kaigan01-31-06, 03:47 PM | Well, I also say the most important thing is that they get an attack every round of my life. As waywreth said if you look at the SRD under movement, and scroll down to movement in 3d: Your constructs have 20 fly average... 1)That means to continue to fly, they need to move at least half that, so 10ft. Which is why they rotated like that when attacking, and why Gaston got an AoO. 2)They can't hover. 3)They can't move backward or reverse. 4) They can only move at an up angle of 60 degrees, and at a speed of half the fly speed, so 10ft in this case. In summary even with a double/charge move, they can only move a max of 20feet up. So what should have happened is they only get 2 attacks in before they disappear. Like I said earlier, I was generous with the movements. And if was not possible to do either of your tacitcs regarding placement of the constructs. The levitate is what defeated you. I do not think I will edit the fight after this... and the results will stay the same, unless you can find some other grevious error. Edit: Fight posting estimations: 1) I will finish the ECL 8 by tonight. It is now 1pm my time, and I have work at 3 and I want a nap.... 2) Ajora's MiniQuest will also be run tonight. 3) The fixes for the Sybil vs. Death fight will be done tonight too... Main changes will be: After CDG, Death will stand up from prone and continue fighting, using the armor spikes as a light weapon. And Sybil will move away per tactics, and use the UMD skill to use the wand of MM. |
| Pitlords01-31-06, 04:34 PM | @all: As you've probably noticed, Ural is paired twice. That came from a misunderstanding between Huan and me. | Skojar01-31-06, 04:34 PM | septroth vs weiniete is up Not that makes even the slightest bit of difference, but for future reference, creatures drawn from a bag or tricks last ten minutes. |

| Usurpator01-31-06, 05:46 PM | Curse the dice!!! Indeed, what luck! Agree that the latter grapple should not being possible, but as you said, it doesn't matter. I think you had the better tactic (I think I missed Grip of Iron there) and the better odds, but the dice won it for me. Both sets of tactics anticipated each other quite good. That first miss is the crucial one, after that the Dex kicks in, and the +2 from invisibility is lost, reducing your chances to hit by quite a bit. |
| Usurpator01-31-06, 05:54 PM | I do have one problem with the fight after further consideration. While that is true, my tactics clearly indicated that Tezca only wanted to attack if he could get off a full attack, and also to create a situation where he could. So if that would be a change against my tactics, so unfortunately, that's not possible (read my tactics if you like to confirm) I knew Kracknol would probably prefer not to attack first, so that means Tezca should have enough time to get into a full attack position with some luck and positioning, or they would both get hit by the delay rule (I guess).... |
| Usurpator01-31-06, 06:04 PM | @TelinArtho: Just rolled the miss chance for Husk's bite at Anakala: 98%, so it will hit. Did my other answers address your questions/issues sufficiently? @Kaigan/Dracazar: Continuing the Hunter Fight now.... |
| Maraxus01-31-06, 06:16 PM | Grik vs Zassl (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8361496) is up. Well, too bad, I did not expect him to attack that early ... and for a reason I don't really know, I feared the axe more then the bow. A little mistake, nice if you corrected it, Zassls ally-penalty is only 20% (I did not level Buba last time. Even rogue levels are bad ;)) About aid another: A, right, I had read it the way, that only the aider needs to be in meelee, but checking it again, you are right. |
| Snommelp01-31-06, 06:51 PM | Re Grik vs. Zassl: Squishy Concerning Sir Valkin vs. Boraxx: I am still looking for someone to please take it; I just got back from one class and have another in twenty minutes, and I won't be home until at least four hours from now. If nobody speaks up soon, I'll post the sheets and tactics and leave it open. If it's not taken when I finally get back home, I'll try to run it while also doing laundry and my French homework. EDIT: I waited as long as I could; I'll probably be late to class, but tactics for Valkin vs. Boraxx have been posted, for whomever wants to take it. And now I go. |

| DTFarstar01-31-06, 09:16 PM | Heh, Version 1 of Drac vs. Ural (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8364784&postcount=148) is up, but I just noticed something that means I've got to rerun from... I believe Round 2 on. The wording in Telin's tactics made me think he was just mistaken about the Trample special ability. I didn't notice he had the Trample feat. So... I just ignored that "If he lets me, then trample" part of the tactics. So, now I'm having to read into something I'm very unfamiliar with(in my RL games mounts are almost never used in our games and consequently people don't take mounted feats. The DMs(myself included) play most monsters like their intelligence so if something is even halfway intelligent a mounted characters mount is biting the dust, making them ALOT less useful.) and as such it's taking me a minute, I just wanted to post this to forestall yelling as I have already noticed my mistake. |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 09:25 PM | I don't know why you didn't have Lady Esmelda attack. You said there was a "decent chance of failing the check" - but it is a DC10 check and my ride skill is +10. As to not mentioning it in my tactics, I imply it, and then refer to it - but yes - I did not express it directly: If Lady Esmelda or myself get wounded, do not withdraw to heal - rather let Lady Esmelda continue attacking and I'll use Lay on hands. If he gives me the opportunity - trample him. This includes on the initial closing and if he withdraws. |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 09:27 PM | @TelinArtho: Just rolled the miss chance for Husk's bite at Anakala: 98%, so it will hit. Did my other answers address your questions/issues sufficiently? @Kaigan/Dracazar: Continuing the Hunter Fight now.... Yes - am fine with it. |

| DTFarstar01-31-06, 09:32 PM | @ TelinArtho - As I mentioned, I noticed my mistake and am in the middle of rectifying it. You are overrunning the crap out of him repeatedly, and the horrible attack rolls are your AoO's now, instead of attacks. You are overrunning him while invisbile now... I think that is possible, anyway. I don't see why not, just have a miss chance on the attack roll. |
| DTFarstar01-31-06, 10:08 PM | Ok, stupid mounted combat and invisiblecastle. Version 2 of Drac vs. Ural of Promethia (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8364784) is up, hopefully better this time. |
| MitzaVolchenko01-31-06, 10:11 PM | I can't do my ECL 5 FFA. The gods hate me...Orphan (the stray cat) just tipped a floor lamp over onto my left wrist and I can't type with that hand. On the bright side, it is turning pretty colors. I'm sorry. |
| TelinArtho01-31-06, 10:31 PM | @DTFarstar - looks much better to me now. |
| DTFarstar01-31-06, 10:35 PM | @TelinArtho - Yeah, it's still not as neat as I would like(I made alot of stupid mistakes at InvisibleCastle, and I kept giving +4 to Lady's attack instead of -4 to Drac's AC vs. Melee, I mean it doesn't matter, it's the same difference, it is just little stuff at IC, double rolled things, rolled with incorrect dice etc. that I can't change that is bothering me.), but I think it is actually accurate towards both sets of tactics and the rules of the game now, which is good. I just wished that I hadn't missed a sentence and mis-understood you due to unfamiliarity the first time. *sigh* It would have saved me alot of frustration. |
| Kaigan01-31-06, 11:00 PM | @All: I need help: How do I calculate the winnings for the 2 5th Level trog clerics and the 4 hound archons. I'm a little lost. I need more HELP please. I'm rerunning the Sybil vs. Death fight. Sybil took Death's weapons and wand of CLW but he still has his armor spikes. Sybil CDG's but Death lives. According to Sybil's tacitcs, she wants to engage in ranged combat if he lived, using his wand to heal. My questions: 1) Can she even use his wand of CLW to heal herself. Isn't there a rule or policy that you cannot use an opponents expendables? 2) She has a movement speed of 30ft and Death has a speed of 40ft, so she cannot effectively create the room for ranged combat. 3) She had tactics for if sleep failed that she would tap tattoo of force screen, draw rapier and fight defensively, so is this an option now? I'm just confused and I'm all pitlorded out. I want to get this done so I can post Ajora's miniquest. Thanks. |

As far as using others expendables, I couldn't honestly say if that is against the rules or not. 2) Yer correct...my speed will effectively throw her ranged option out the window. 3) This would be the tactic to go with, since the CDG failed, and the ranged option is not viable. |
| Skojar02-01-06, 12:34 AM | Wands are spell trigger items. They don't require a command word. The UMD DC to activate a wand that doesn't contain a spell on your spell list is 20. If the spell is on your list, you can use the wand without any check. The UMD DC to activate blindly is 25. Wands use the spell trigger activation method, so casting a spell from a wand is usually a standard action that doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity. (If the spell being cast, however, has a longer casting time than 1 standard action, it takes that long to cast the spell from a wand.) To activate a wand, a character must hold it in hand (or whatever passes for a hand, for nonhumanoid creatures) and point it in the general direction of the target or area. A wand may be used while grappling or while swallowed whole. |
| Snommelp02-01-06, 12:43 AM | I'm a bit confuzzled. I stated about this time yesterday that I wouldn't be able to run Valkin vs. Boraxx and got no reply; someone else asked for their fight to be taken later and got two replies in close proximity. Is the fight scaring people away, or do I just have bad timing? Either way, unless someone else takes the fight it will not be up until after pairings tomorrow. I've just had too much on my plate; I'm going to spend maybe half a minute updating Grik and then go to bed and hopefully sleep for more than five hours this time. Anyone who's willing to take Sir Valkin vs. Boraxx, the sheets and tactics are posted for you, all you have to do is actually run it. |
| TelinArtho02-01-06, 12:48 AM | Well, you know Snommelp that I would have taken it - but as I am involved in the fight that pretty much discounts me. Same thing goes for Pittbull. The others - I can't much speak for. I would love to see the fight run before pairings, but regardless of whether it is or not, at this point - Sir Valkin wouldn't be ready for next week anyway. |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 12:49 AM | I didn't notice you posting that, Snommelp or I totally would have picked it up, since I'm not really tired, it looks like I'm not sleeping and missing my 8AM class tommorrow, as such I'll be happy to go ahead and make sure the Valkin vs. Boraxx fight gets done. I would do the ECL 5 FFA.... but I don't have time for both and I freaking hate running FFA's so, I'll do yours instead. |
| NiQil02-01-06, 12:51 AM | Wands are spell trigger items. They don't require a command word. The UMD DC to activate a wand that doesn't contain a spell on your spell list is 20. If the spell is on your list, you can use the wand without any check. The UMD DC to activate blindly is 25. I had the DC wrong...it is 25. However, the first time, it has to be activated blindly, as per the UMD skill: USE MAGIC DEVICE (CHA; TRAINED ONLY) Use this skill to activate magic Check: You can use this skill to read a spell or to activate a magic item. Use Magic Device lets you use a magic item as if you had the spell ability or class features of another class, as if you were a different race, or as if you were of a different alignment. You make a Use Magic Device check each time you activate a device such as a wand. If you are using the check to emulate an alignment or some other quality in an ongoing manner, you need to make the relevant Use Magic Device check once per hour. You must consciously choose which requirement to emulate. That is, you must know what you are trying to emulate when you make a Use Magic Device check for that purpose. The DCs for various tasks involving Use Magic Device checks are summarized on the table below. Task Use Magic Device DC Activate blindly 25 Decipher a written spell 25 + spell level Use a scroll 20 + caster level Use a wand 20 Emulate a class feature 20 Emulate an ability score See text Emulate a race 25 Emulate an alignment 30 Activate Blindly: Some magic items are activated by special words, thoughts, or actions. You can activate such an item as if you were using the activation word, thought, or action, even when you’re not and even if you don’t know it. You do have to perform some equivalent activity in order to make the check. That is, you must speak, wave the item around, or otherwise attempt to get it to activate. You get a special +2 bonus on your Use Magic Device check if you’ve activated the item in question at least once before. If you fail by 9 or less, you can’t activate the device. If you fail by 10 or more, you suffer a mishap. A mishap means that magical energy gets released but it doesn’t do what you wanted it to do. The default mishaps are that the item affects the wrong target or that uncontrolled magical energy is released, dealing 2d6 points of damage to you. This mishap is in addition to the chance for a mishap that you normally run when you cast a spell from a scroll that you could not otherwise cast yourself. Decipher a Written Spell: This usage works just like deciphering a written spell with the Spellcraft skill, except that the DC is 5 points higher. Deciphering a written spell requires 1 minute of concentration. Emulate an Ability Score: To cast a spell from a scroll, you need a high score in the appropriate ability (Intelligence for wizard spells, Wisdom for divine spells, or Charisma for sorcerer or bard spells). Your effective ability score (appropriate to the class you’re emulating when you try to cast the spell from the scroll) is your Use Magic Device check result minus 15. If you already have a high enough score in the appropriate ability, you don’t need to make this check. Emulate an Alignment: Some magic items have positive or negative effects based on the user’s alignment. Use Magic Device lets you use these items as if you were of an alignment of your choice. You can emulate only one alignment at a time. Emulate a Class Feature: Sometimes you need to use a class feature to activate a magic item. In this case, your effective level in the emulated class equals your Use Magic Device check result minus 20. This skill does not let you actually use the class feature of another class. It just lets you activate items as if you had that class feature. If the class whose feature you are emulating has an alignment requirement, you must meet it, either honestly or by emulating an appropriate alignment with a separate Use Magic Device check (see above). Emulate a Race: Some magic items work only for members of certain races, or work better for members of those races. You can use such an item as if you were a race of your choice. You can emulate only one race at a time. Use a Scroll: If you are casting a spell from a scroll, you have to decipher it first. Normally, to cast a spell from a scroll, you must have the scroll’s spell on your class spell list. Use Magic Device allows you to use a scroll as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list. The DC is equal to 20 + the caster level of the spell you are trying to cast from the scroll. In addition, casting a spell from a scroll requires a minimum score (10 + spell level) in the appropriate ability. If you don’t have a sufficient score in that ability, you must emulate the ability score with a separate Use Magic Device check (see above). This use of the skill also applies to other spell completion magic items. Use a Wand: Normally, to use a wand, you must have the wand’s spell on your class spell list. This use of the skill allows you to use a wand as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list. This use of the skill also applies to other spell trigger magic items, such as staffs. Action: None. The Use Magic Device check is made as part of the action (if any) required to activate the magic item. Try Again: Yes, but if you ever roll a natural 1 while attempting to activate an item and you fail, then you can’t try to activate that item again for 24 hours. Special: You cannot take 10 with this skill. You can’t aid another on Use Magic Device checks. Only the user of the item may attempt such a check. If you have the Magical Aptitude feat, you get a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks. Synergy: If you have 5 or more ranks in Spellcraft, you get a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks related to scrolls. If you have 5 or more ranks in Decipher Script, you get a +2 bonus on Use Magic Device checks related to scrolls. If you have 5 or more ranks in Use Magic Device, you get a +2 bonus to Spellcraft checks made to decipher spells on scrolls Once it has been activated once, then it becomes no check at all, because the wand is on Sybil's spell list. Also, spell trigger items, by definition, require a command word, hence the need to activate blindly the first time with UMD: Spell Trigger: Spell trigger activation is similar to spell completion, but it’s even simpler. No gestures or spell finishing is needed, just a special knowledge of spellcasting that an appropriate character would know, and a single word that must be spoken. Anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spell trigger item that stores that spell. (This is the case even for a character who can’t actually cast spells, such as a 3rd-level paladin.) The user must still determine what spell is stored in the item before she can activate it. Activating a spell trigger item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity. So a DC 25 UMD check is required the first time to figure out the command word, and then from there, since it is on Sybil's spell list, it can be used with no check. But again, that does not address whether using someone else's expendables is allowed or not. |
| Luni02-01-06, 12:55 AM | @Pittbull - nice tactic - I didn't even notice the blindness and that killed me. Nicely done. @Luni - not asking for a rerun or adaptation at all - but given that Delaria has the ability to communicate with her allies - why didn't she try to break LOS with the spiritual weapons or even draw her crossbow and start firing? Well, considering Delaria is blind, so she can only move 10', moving 20' compared to Barthleby's 50', would change the fight likely. |
| Snommelp02-01-06, 12:57 AM | I didn't notice you posting that, Snommelp or I totally would have picked it up, since I'm not really tired, it looks like I'm not sleeping and missing my 8AM class tommorrow, as such I'll be happy to go ahead and make sure the Valkin vs. Boraxx fight gets done. I'll PM Pitlords to get you your credit, and then I'm off to bed. Advice for any musicians thinking of studying music on college: don't. You work just as hard and as long as everyone else, for a fraction of the credit. I'm taking ten classes and am getting less credit than a friend who is taking six. |
| MitzaVolchenko02-01-06, 01:27 AM | But again, that does not address whether using someone else's expendables is allowed or not. Oddly that came up my first week on the boards...they can be used, but you don't lose them for someone else having done so...it is as if the Nimbus returns them. Tapping the tattoo and giving it a defensive fight is fine. As for the blind activation...she knows what the wand is. It is in her list...it is not blind...if you argue that it is blind, then I argue that any tactic that takes into account the properties of another person's gear and expendables is metagaming as they are looking at that shortsword+2 blindly and consider it less dangerous than the regular longsword because they have no way to know that it is a better chance to hit therm and hurts more. On the movement true except that I can stop the charges and withdraw or run to get range forcing Death to do the same, and I also have a hide option at the end of a run. And she can always try a daze...cantrips are free casts. Regardless, Kaigan, thank you for running through it again. My wrist is now happily strapped in a splint with a hot patch and is feeling moderately better for having been iced and me having swallowed a vike with my crown and coke. I am truly sorry about the ECL5 FFA. It just takes too long to run that fight typing with one hand. |

I am truly sorry about the ECL5 FFA. It just takes too long to run that fight typing with one hand. Well the rerun is up so please check it out. I did allow Sybil to try to use the wand to heal, but that didn't work out. It was a very odd fight to run... but @Mitza: the withdraw would only move you 60ft away, while he could double move after you for 80ft. So you would go in circles... Also if you ran away, he would get an AoO and still run after you. Daze might have worked, but since it was not in the tactics, and your tactics technically didn't break down, I worked with what I still had... so hopefully that's all for edit's unless there is some glaring error. Edit: And sorry about your wrist, hope it gets better soon! |
| MitzaVolchenko02-01-06, 01:49 AM | I disagree on the wand. If he had six wands on him, I'd buy it. He has one. Sybil knows what it is. It is not blind activation. I strongly disagree on the initiative swap, but that is your call. I also think somewhere along the line what is in her hands gets confuzzled, but again, unless you are going to edit again it matters very little. Additionally, when he stands up he is not at a speed advantage as psionic focus should not last through being spelled to sleep and then hit. Once you are psionically focused, you remain focused until you expend your focus, become unconscious, or go to sleep (or enter a meditative trance, in the case of elans), or until your power point reserve drops to 0. Edit again or not as you wish. I will update in the morning, either way. |

The intiative didn't swap: On CDG round, he slept, then you CDG, which woke him up, then he acted. I don't see the problem with that. What's in her hands is not confusing. She stowed the wand, and was holding the axe, becuase you CDGed him with it. If you wanted to drop the axe, and give it back to, then I guess I could do that. I thought stowing it was a good idea. I'm am still unclear about the wand. We need an elder to rule or something. It may be too late for this fight, but for future ones. I really don't see how this fight could change. Even with a speed of 30ft, he can match you, and you will be given to 10 round delay, as you are running away, and he is trying to catch up and engage you. @King Uther: Ajora's miniquest will be up soon. There will be no story unfortunately as I have a lab write-up to write and a pre-lab to finish. |

There will be no story unfortunately as I have a lab write-up to write and a pre-lab to finish. Mitza is correct in that my focus would go away and I would drop to 30 ft movement, but you are also correct in that I would be able to keep up with her and get in the occasional charging attack, depending upon obstructions, and also take AoO when she moves, unless she is withdrawing, which would lead to a delay penalty eventually. The wand thing is pretty clear, in my mind. The thing you have to remember, Mitza, is that the command word for every wand is different. You never heard me use it, so you have no way to know what the command word is. So the first time you use it, you have to activate it blindly at DC 25 to figure it out. Had I used it at some point before you stole it, then I would readily agree that upon a successful listen check you would know what the command word was and could activate it freely. As for the legality of using others expendables, I honestly don't know the answer to that question. Fortunately, it proved to not be an issue in this fight, but methinks I will pop over to the Ask an Elder thread and ask. @ Kaigan: If you feel the need to edit in the ranged scenerio with my 30 move instead of my 40 move, go ahead. However, ultimately, I think the result will remain the same with the high rolls in melee that are there...the first few times I attack, the same result happens, especially if I am charging (which is almost certainly what I would be doing if I am giving chase). Also, with regard to the initiative issue....Kaigan has it correct. Initiative does not change just because of the sleep, nor does it change based on a CDG. I know of no rule that causes initiative to change when either of the two occur by themselves, and I am certain that putting the two together would not change that. |
| shadowmaster02-01-06, 02:46 AM | I have fixed some mistakes in the challack vs. sunstroke fight, and the winner has changed. |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 03:03 AM | Boraxx vs. Sir Valkin (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8366927&postcount=150) is up. Fleet of Foot and high ACs and stuff.... weird. Anyway, bed for me now. Glad to be of service Snommelp. I'll check for problems when I wake up, I'm sure there will be some, but hopefully nothing too horrible. |
| Kaigan02-01-06, 03:04 AM | Okay, finally done... well sorta: Here is Ajora's MQ. Not much really, but hey what do you expect from a super cannon? And here is my ECL 8 fight: Team VanDam vs. Team HOLY I am unsure of the rewards, so could someone please help me out with them, thanks. I will not be editting the Sybil vs. Death further, as I believe the outcome will not change. But there needs to be an official ruling on : 1) Does taking items while asleep wake up the person asleep? If no, what is the limit? 2) If a person takes an opponents expendable item, can that person use it? |

| DTFarstar02-01-06, 03:11 AM | Rnd 3 - 9 Damage Rnd 4 - 15 Damage Rnd 5 - 8 Damage Unless I missed some other damage somewhere, that is only 32 damage, Challack's normal HP total. While raging he has 38 hp, as noted in his character sheet. Therefore he would not go unconscious in round 6, and there is a decent chance he will not lose the grapple check, but on that chance I would appreciate you continuing the fight, Shadowmaster. |

| DTFarstar02-01-06, 03:19 AM | You are welcome. Hehe, I told Pitlords to assign me no fights this week and I've ended up picking up 3 anyway. I just can't stay away evidently. Anyway, I'm going to sleep now that I've posted my objection about Challack's fight. I'm going to go ahead and edit him with the new numbers, but I would like it to be finished. Challack should have 6 hp left before Sunstroke's turn and thus has a pretty decent chance to survive. +11 vs +13 grapple, and opponent only does 1d6+4, so a 33% chance to be at 0hp or above even if I fail to resist his grapple. So... I would like it continued. Glad to be of service, -Chris |
| Ariel2302-01-06, 03:57 AM | @Kedi, Dracazar (maybe Kaigan) Well, this is complicated, but that's the nature of summoning 6 monsters during a fight. Here's what I see now that I think I've puzzled it out: Trixie was hit by a Bee that didn't exist in Round 10. She suffers no attacks until Round 12 (or possibly 13). The soonest the Bee could get to her would be Round 12 and would require a charge. If it charges, it gets a 16 to hit her AC 16. If it can't charge, it rolls a 14 vs AC 16 and misses. It has 80' Fly so it probably charges. The Bee disappears after stinging or after Round 13. No monsters remain. [Obviously Cher could keep Summoning.] Of course there is still the issue of Trixie losing 5 STR in one hit from a 1d4 CON poison! Trixie should either be at full health (if she's lucky) or down 6 to 9 HP from her usual max of 22. :ghosted: This is entirely due to a (pretty important) error with Summon Monster as well as doing 1d6 STR poison instead of 1d4 CON. 1) Summoning a monster is a 1 round spell. Not a full-round, but one whole round. [This is the same for scrolls.] 2) Summoned monsters appear at the start of Cher's next round, last for 3-4 rounds and then disappear. 3) AFAICT every summoned monster that appeared acted in the round she began casting the spell. As an aside, Cher can summon them 35 feet away to give them some "free" movement. If she is at (0, -27) they would appear one round later at (0, -20). To somewhat make things easier, here's the monsters in this mess: Celestial Bee 1 Celestial DogA 1 Celestial Bee 2 Celestial DogA 2 Fiendish Monstrous Spider Celestial BeeCL 3 3 Round 2 Cher begins summoning from a scroll Round 3 Celestial Bee 1 appears and moves Cher begins summoning from memory Round 4 Celestial Bee 1 moves/attacks Celestial DogA 1 appears and moves Round 5 Celestial Bee 1 moves/attacks Celestial DogA 1 moves/attacks Round 6 Celestial Bee 1 makes its final move/attack and disappears Celestial DogA 1 moves/attacks Cher begins summoning from a scroll Round 7 Celestial DogA 1 makes its final move/attack and disappears Celestial Bee 2 appears and moves Cher begins summoning from memory Round 8 Celestial Bee 2 moves/attacks Celestial DogA 2 appears and moves Cher begins summoning from a scroll Trixie puts Celestial Bee 2 to Sleep. Round 9 Celestial Bee 2 Sleeping Celestial DogA 2 moves/attacks Fiendish Monstrous Spider appears and moves Round 10 Celestial Bee 2 disappears while sleeping. Celestial DogA 2 moves/attacks Fiendish Monstrous Spider moves/attacks Cher begins summoning from a scroll Please note that there are no Bees on the map this round to hit Trixie [i]Still conscious, Trixie uses her last round of Expeditious Retreat to Withdraw 120' I think by now it would be obvious to move North, away from the factory churning out monsters that is called Cher. A few good examples of squares she can reach are (-4,22) (-19, 19) (7, 17) but any place far and with cover or breaking the charge would work (except to the South). I'll put Trixie in Blue below, with some possible outcomes for the next few rounds. Basically, she is safe for 2-3 rounds. Round 11 Celestial Bee 3CL 3 appears in (0, -16) and moves 160' to (0, 16) or thereabouts. Fiendish Monstrous Spider moves 60' and is still 60' from Trixie. Celestial DogA 2 moves 100' but can't get to Trixie and disappears Trixie withdraws up to 60', putting more distance between her and the monsters. Round 12 Fiendish Monstrous Spider moves 60' but still can't reach Trixie (or can't charge) and disappears Celestial Bee 3CL 3 in (0, 16) or thereabouts moves 160' to base Trixie, possibly/probably charging her in Round 12. Round 13 Celestial Bee 3CL 3 makes its final move/attack and disappears if it still has its stinger (otherwise it dies) No monsters remain (subject to further summonings). |
| kedi02-01-06, 04:28 AM | I'm aware of it... It was one of the issues I found yesterday. Last night was a nightmare, I rerun the fight for 4 times or what, and when I finially thought it was it, electricity was a *****. Swoosh. Gone. I think Kaigan's curse is stuck on me. ;P I'll try to do it again today, but I may be busy today, if I can't finish it I'll just post the resumé. Cher used 3 mose Scrolls, that was the all difference with the outcome. And of course, ending positions etc... |
| Dracazar02-01-06, 05:17 AM | @Dracazar: I'm going to rename Cher "The Zookeeper" @The World I resent this fight being called boring (before it was even ran!). A kobold being swarmed by a mass of escaped menagerie creatures would likely be a crowd pleaser. If everyone just wants to see melee and lots of attack rolls*, then we should have a magic arena and a mundane arena and divide the fighters accordingly. Or bar magic. I'd be fine with that. Eheh  I agree. I did this char to learn all the summonable monster, I have a spreadsheet that help me to use the best in any situation. This knowledge will be useful in my TT games where I'm DM  |
| Dracazar02-01-06, 05:50 AM | Uilo => Feradeth => Anakala is finished up. Took another 14 rounds from the point I left it last time.... Thank you for the really nice run. I have only this to ask: How the Wand of Cure Light Wounds of Feradeth is able to cure like this: @37 Feradeth withdraws and cures himself: [2,3,3,3]+4 = 15 hp The main concern is why Husk did not attack Feradeth, I clearly asked for that! The dog is trained for Combat Riding and also you can push it with a 45% success. The dog have several opportunities to attack (before and after the shocking grasps) I would appreciate very much if you could add in these attacks. |
| Dracazar02-01-06, 06:42 AM | I have some questions about Ural vs Drac: @Round 2: Ural has overrun Drac, knocking him down (20 vs. 11) and Lady kicks him in the knee(4). May I know what is this "knock", where is listed in Ural's tactic and where is rolled on InvisibleCast? I don't understand why I'm prone, without the AoO for standing up I'll take 6 damage less, and perhaps a different result. I think you refer to the OVERRUN special attack but Ural's asked this: "If Drac is visible from here - charge him (most likely possible with 180ft of movement) or close to base" So this would be a charge attack and not an overrun attack. Overrun is never mentioned in Ural's tactics. Same in round 3. @Round 9 Ural is stunned. A stunned creature drops everything held, can’t take actions, takes a –2 penalty to AC, and loses his Dexterity bonus to AC She can't take actions, so she can't command the horse to attack, the horse can attack only with a ride check of Ural (autosuccess) but the check can't be made if she is stunned. So in round 9 Drac could use another magic missile to win the fight. Also note the Drac used 2 scrolls only in the original rounds so he still have another scroll of magic missile. These two concerns could both change (again) the fight so I kindly ask you to make changes. Thanks |

Hey Drac, I just condensed several rounds of curing into one line, since after he withdrew, you could not get LOS anymore. Those are four rolls for 1d8+1 curing, rolls always indicated between [these], modifiers separately. I guess you are right, I forgot about the push option! I must warn you that I do consider it an improvisation though, since I cannot gather from your tactics if you meant to do that in advance, or just forgot that Husk would not attack the air elementals or mephit by himself because he didn't have the Improved Attack trick. In any case, there would only be opportunities when Feradeth is delivering the shocking grasps, since he is just a bit too high up in the air at other times. I'll see what I can do. |

I noticed your condensing but on round 37 there is nothing to condense. Please notice that also in round 7 husk could attack feradeth. The dog could also be pushed to attack the Elementals but don't mind this. Remember that you can retry a failed push and that Uilo could push also if Feradeth is flying so the dog catch him as soon as he is in range. I would say the your pitlording is really nice reading, It would be perfect if you would use dynamaps :) why you don't like it? |
| Usurpator02-01-06, 07:48 AM | And here is my ECL 8 fight: Team VanDam vs. Team HOLY I am unsure of the rewards, so could someone please help me out with them, thanks. 2x lvl 5 Cleric Troglodytes (ECL 6 each) 4x Hound Archons (ECL 4 each) XP: 4*600 for the Hound Archons + 2* 1200 for the Trogs = 4800 total Gold: 4*1200 gp. for the Hound Archons + 2*2000 for the Trogs = 8800 total Vandelar: 2400 XP / 4400 gp. Dameon: 2400 XP / 4400 gp. For comparison, if they had fought a regular fight at ECL 8: Vand/Dameon: 2400 XP / 2400 gp. Both got a 1000 gp. bonus. Why? Not because the fight was more difficult, since the difficulty was exactly equal in difficulty to a normal ECL 8 matchup, just because they had multiple opponent of lesser strength instead of two opponents of equal strength. I have an idea how to fix this, but continue this discussion in Tavern. |
| MitzaVolchenko02-01-06, 07:56 AM | I really don't see how this fight could change. Even with a speed of 30ft, he can match you, and you will be given to 10 round delay, as you are running away, and he is trying to catch up and engage you. As for how it can change...an equal move becomes an unequal move when the follower has to pick a direction around cover and hope they choose correctly *shrugs* I've run enough of them now where equal movement turnd not so equal really fast without anything but use of the arena as it is. I disagreed with you delaying me from start which caused him to start readying...I never say hide for a few rounds...should have been casting when he first crossed my LOS...regardless result stands with my issues noted for Elder discussion. On the wand, it is not a command word, it is spell trigger "Anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spell trigger item that stores that spell. "...I know the spell. I can complete it. So yeah, not thrilled but understand where you are coming from and will argue the salient points in Tavern/Elder thread from here on out. |

Then I did not add the extra rounds in numbers, which may have caused the confusion. I am aware of the possibility of retrying the push. Feradeth flew at the top of the four squares available in the cavern, Husk was standing at the bottom, he simply doesn't have the reach to do so. As for the map: I really like you dynamaps, and I would like to see the code, I'll be interested to take a look at it. It did experiment with them (especially after you added the visual interface) but found out I was still a lot quicker (and more flexible) using my own mapping method. Especially calculating distances, since my Photoshop map is scaled to 1 square = 1 cm. or 10 ft. is 1 cm. I can easily plot movement or determine range for penalties to Spot and Hide. Additionally, if I have time, I sometimes like to add little comments or other things on the map, so I like to have that flexibility. I also like to write some descriptive text in the battle, but the less time I have, and the longer it takes, the shorter my descriptions will become... Another (technical) improvement I would consider for your script is sending along headers that will cause the results to be cached by the client, because it reduces strain on your server and would improve loading time for the images. |

I have shared the code with Mal-2, so if you would add something there is no problem. Write me at dracazar@ ++no.spam++ @greyhawk.it and we will do it. About the distance, I'll add that feature in next map generator (also with LoS). You can add comments on every rounds (and on every map) but, I agree, with limited flexibility. The cache headers is a nice idea, I'll add them asap, how many days do you think for cache? |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 09:27 AM | @ Dracazar - Language barrier here. Let me see if I can explain. There is a line in Ural's tactics... let me go quote it for you. Ural's tactics vs Drac A tough fight to be sure - let's try to get him before his invisibility completely makes it difficult to get him! Start off in the front and center of my starting area, mounted on Lady Esmelda with my sword in hand. If Drac is visible from here - charge him (most likely possible with 180ft of movement) or close to base. If he is not visible from my starting position, start heading towards the right hand starting box and alter direction once he's found. After that I want to press the issue - using my superior movement to ruin all chances of getting away. If he gets invisible, try to follow him as best as I can using Lady Esmelda's keen senses (scent). Remember to use mounted combat to negate an attack against Lady Esmelda and my mount for cover against attacks for me when possible. Also, if his familiar comes in to attack me - take any AoO from movement to take it down. If Lady Esmelda or myself get wounded, do not withdraw to heal - rather let Lady Esmelda continue attacking and I'll use Lay on hands. If he gives me the opportunity - trample him. This includes on the initial closing and if he withdraws. Thats about it - hopefully I'll be able to press the attack enough to take him down. What is actually said in the rounds is flavor text by me, and is confusing sometimes I guess. What happened was Ural wanted to use her trample feat if she could, as she couldn't charge(your cover was in the way) she moved over and had her horse overrun you. With the trample feat you don't get the option of evading the overrun like normal. Trample [General] Prerequisites Ride 1 rank, Mounted Combat. Benefit When you attempt to overrun an opponent while mounted, your target may not choose to avoid you. Your mount may make one hoof attack against any target you knock down, gaining the standard +4 bonus on attack rolls against prone targets. Special A fighter may select Trample as one of his fighter bonus feats. Overrun You can attempt an overrun as a standard action taken during your move. (In general, you cannot take a standard action during a move; this is an exception.) With an overrun, you attempt to plow past or over your opponent (and move through his square) as you move. You can only overrun an opponent who is one size category larger than you, the same size, or smaller. You can make only one overrun attempt per round. If you’re attempting to overrun an opponent, follow these steps. Step 1 Attack of Opportunity. Since you begin the overrun by moving into the defender’s space, you provoke an attack of opportunity from the defender. Step 2 Opponent Avoids? The defender has the option to simply avoid you. If he avoids you, he doesn’t suffer any ill effect and you may keep moving (You can always move through a square occupied by someone who lets you by.) The overrun attempt doesn’t count against your actions this round (except for any movement required to enter the opponent’s square). If your opponent doesn’t avoid you, move to Step 3. Step 3 Opponent Blocks? If your opponent blocks you, make a Strength check opposed by the defender’s Dexterity or Strength check (whichever ability score has the higher modifier). A combatant gets a +4 bonus on the check for every size category he is larger than Medium or a -4 penalty for every size category he is smaller than Medium. The defender gets a +4 bonus on his check if he has more than two legs or is otherwise more stable than a normal humanoid. If you win, you knock the defender prone. If you lose, the defender may immediately react and make a Strength check opposed by your Dexterity or Strength check (including the size modifiers noted above, but no other modifiers) to try to knock you prone. Step 4 Consequences. If you succeed in knocking your opponent prone, you can continue your movement as normal. If you fail and are knocked prone in turn, you have to move 5 feet back the way you came and fall prone, ending your movement there. If you fail but are not knocked prone, you have to move 5 feet back the way you came, ending your movement there. If that square is occupied, you fall prone in that square. Improved Overrun If you have the Improved Overrun feat, your target may not choose to avoid you. Mounted Overrun (Trample) If you attempt an overrun while mounted, your mount makes the Strength check to determine the success or failure of the overrun attack (and applies its size modifier, rather than yours). If you have the Trample feat and attempt an overrun while mounted, your target may not choose to avoid you, and if you knock your opponent prone with the overrun, your mount may make one hoof attack against your opponent. (all bolding is mine) So, Lady Overran you knocking you down, then you had to stand, and Ural missed(carried over attack from version 1 of the fight) and Lady hit. etc. So, that was why you kept going prone, she kept overruning you. As to the last round, Ural was stunned, and couldn't command Lady to attack, but Lady has the defend trick. As you are obviously fighting her master and have been for a good little time, the defend trick kicked in and had her attack. No ride check was needed because Ural was stunned and thus couldn't attack with her horse. So, that's why that happened. I hope I managed to crush the language barrier this time and you understand why I did what I did. If someone can prove to me that the defend trick would not kick in for some reason, then I'll be happy to change the fight results yet again, but you are going to have to convince me, and that will probably be hard. I'm generally pretty stubborn in my interpretations unless there is obvious proof or an Elder ruling. Anyway, I'm sorry you lost, I'll edit out the last used MM scroll. That was a really close fight, the second time around. Before I noticed Ural's Trample feat I thought Telin mistakenly thought his mount had the trample special ability, and without trample you would have owned this fight. Sorry -Chris |
| TelinArtho02-01-06, 09:56 AM | I have some questions about Ural vs Drac: @Round 2: Ural has overrun Drac, knocking him down (20 vs. Thanks What you need to look at is the following from Ural's tactics (paraphrased): "If he gives me the opportunity to trample - do so" The feat is trample and it allows me to do a mounted overrun and a hoof attack from the horse. In round 9, the horse attacks because it is defending me (because you are attacking Ural). EDIT: Oops - looks like your concerns were already addressed by the pitlord. |
| TelinArtho02-01-06, 10:22 AM | @DTFarstar/Pittbull: Major issue with the Sir Valkin/Boraxx fight: FLEET OF FOOT [GENERAL] Prerequisites: Dex 15, Run. Benefit: When running or charging, you can make a single direction change of 90 degrees or less. You can’t use this feat while wearing medium or heavy armor, or when carrying a medium or heavy load. If you are charging, you must move in a straight line for 10 feet after the turn to maintain the charge. Normal: Without this feat, you can run or charge only in a straight line. So Boraxx, while mounted on Lara - would not be able to take advantage of this feat. EDIT: Also when Boraxx rages, his AC drops by 2 - so his AC should be 20 (24 when using Lara for cover). I don't see any additional would-be hits from this - but given that the initial charge is in error - it is quite feasible that the fight will be continuing. If this is not resolved - I would like for the fight to be held over. |
| Dracazar02-01-06, 10:44 AM | Ok I have understood the trample/overrun issue. I still don't agree with the Defend issue. I'll explain. 1) Drac has 21 Int and I think it is a bit stupid to stay near Ural/Horse while they are stunned/blinded for several seconds 2) Drac could use the magic missile while moving back (at least 5' every round) 3) The Horse isn't defending his master but is actively attacking me, Defend should means that he readies to attack if someone attack the master. I mean that the attack should happen if someone comes near and attack otherwise Defend would be equal or better than Attack trick. The way you ruled Defend trick is better than Attack trick because the horse chased me even without any command. Drac after 4 should be at least 20' away from the Horse and could use the Magic Missile and I don't think that the horse (Int 2) is able to recognize the spell as an attack. What I want to say is that the Defend trick works only for adjacent threat with a so low animal intelligence. Even with only 5' distance between me and the horse the Defend trick should not work otherwise, I repeat, Defend is really better than Attack because it works even without command! Thank you for your audience. |
| SoulLord02-01-06, 11:06 AM | 2x lvl 5 Cleric Troglodytes (ECL 6 each) 4x Hound Archons (ECL 4 each) XP: 4*600 for the Hound Archons + 2* 1200 for the Trogs = 4800 total Gold: 4*1200 gp. for the Hound Archons + 2*2000 for the Trogs = 8800 total Vandelar: 2400 XP / 4400 gp. Not because the fight was more difficult, since the difficulty was exactly equal in difficulty to a normal ECL 8 matchup, just because they had multiple opponent of lesser strength instead of two opponents of equal strength. I have an idea how to fix this, but continue this discussion in Tavern. Did you add the mercenary included in the fight in the calculations? |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 11:11 AM | The reason you were still so close, if because you were trying to do as much(max damage as you put it in your tactics) to Ural as quickly as possible. Which meant Shocking Grasp, which meant Melee range. You did continue to move backwards after you used Shocking Grasp. So, it wasn't a chase or a seek for Lady, it was a 5ft step. The way I see it, if there is a present and obvious threat to their master and there are no other commands then the defend trick is activated and the trained animal attacks the threat. Like I said, I'm pretty stubborn about my views. I disagree that it is better than the attack trick, because defend is reactive, they have to see you damaging or attacking their master for anything to happen. If you activate the attack trick, they pretty much just run up and kill something as soon as they see it or you point it out. Again, if you can get some Elder corroboration or something textual(RAW) to refute me, then I will be happy to change the fight for you, but as it is we just happen to disagree on this matter and I hope you won't hold it against me that I am keeping my position. Thanks for listening, -Chris |
| Usurpator02-01-06, 11:23 AM | Did you add the mercenary included in the fight in the calculations? No, not yet. Did not check for any allies.... |
| Dracazar02-01-06, 11:31 AM | First of all I don't think I need an Elder/RAW advocate. We are just talking about this issue. Then you say that even if I move 10' back (5' for 2 rounds) the Horse recognize me as a threat and so, even if not commanded, come towards me and attacks (ops Defends) with his full attacks? And eventually the horse would continue attacking me even if I withdraw because I'm still the only menace. Excuse me but this seems me the Attack trick. You are DM/Pitlord in this fight so if you say that this is "defense" trick I'll accept it but I'm really concerned. May you check the distance from the horse (moving back after the shocking grasp) because Drac still seems a bit stupid (to me) to take a full (3) attacks from the horse after 4 rounds of blind/stun. Perhaps if the horse had only 1 attack it should be different. Thanks. |
| Gonbow02-01-06, 11:41 AM | Query: Since my sheet for the ECL 5 ffa is up, can I alter my sheet to change the heading/do other things this week, since ICly the fight would take place last week? In specific, Tatyana wants to MQ to join Psi. |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 11:42 AM | Gah, looking at it I see I kind of did deny you a 5ft step at one point, I guess the exact best behavior would have been stepping forward after the Scorching Ray, casting Shocking Grasp then Stepping back, Magic Missile then stepping back leaving you 10ft away, which means that Lady would only get 1 attack that round, and keeping thematic rolls that would be a natural 1 and miss. So really, what is being decided here is who wins this fight. Which makes it really hard to me to change what I did. Maybe if I gave Lady 1 attack roll and re-rolled it or something. I don't want to just be like "There was a missed 5ft step, Telin, so you lost." That just seems kind of arbitrary and mean, but I understand your point too, missing the one 5ft step is a huge deal in this fight. In the interest of fairness to you and your opponent, what do you truly feel should be done Drac? |
| Usurpator02-01-06, 11:46 AM | @Kaigan: I just browsed through the Vandelar/Daemon fight (because of the reference to a Mercenary and the rewards), but I must admit I was rather suprised by what I saw the first few rounds. Round 3 One Troglodyte and several Hound Archons are grappled by tentacles. I don't see any actions for them that round. (I am assuming the grapple checks in round 3 where made for doing damage, as the spell requires). Round 4 Once again, offensive grapple checks, but no actions for the grappled opponents. While you mention 'attempt to escape' you only roll one grapple check for each character, and they get damage, leading me to the assumption that these are the offensive checks for the tentacles that should be made on Vandelar's turn. Also, the Hound Archons can Teleport without error(Su) at will! Why don't they use this ability to escape the tentacles? (teleport is also useful for basing opponents and the like) In any case, would I have been the player of the opposing team, I think I would protest strongly against the way it played out now. Soullord, Huan, my apologies, I don't like you to lose, but somebody has to defend the poor critters rights to a fair fight. |
| Dracazar02-01-06, 11:57 AM | In the interest of fairness to you and your opponent, what do you truly feel should be done Drac? That I truly feel is that the horse should not attack while the master stunned (in Real the master could also fall down). Also I think that Dracazar should not come near Ural even if blinded stunned because he could do all his spell at distance, also the shocking grasp becuase Drac always use his hawk as the toucher (always done this in prev fights). So stay so near the danger is really strange for a so high Int mage. |

Except now that I look at the monster entry for the greater teleport. The archons can only use that to teleport themselfs and up to 50lbs of objects. They are carrying HalfPlate (50 lbs) a greatsword (8lbs), a bow (3lbs), and 40 arrows (6 lbs) a total weight of 67 lbs, so they cannot teleport. @King Uther: Edit money. @Usurpator: Thanks for the help... I'll just wait till after the allies are calculated. |

As I said, the Hounds/Trog didn't even try to escape, they only made grapple checks to avoid the damage. They should get their own checks to escape (which don't cause damage if they fail them). As for 'hard to teleport with someone is breaking your neck', that has to have a basis in the rules. Since teleport is (Su) and those abilities are not hindered in any way if you are grappling, they should be able to teleport without problem, no Concentration check needed. But Kaigan gave them equipment that rendered their teleport ability useless, so they actually entered the fight more handicapped by their equipment than helped. Incidentally, this is why you rarely see a Balor in full plate armor.... Well, accidents will happen I guess. Just count your blessings and hope I won't Pitlord your next monster team fight. ;) |
| Huan02-01-06, 12:41 PM | @Usurpator Post-tactics for a monster... interesting. I believe you are the first to propose that, but must we hold off the conclusion of this this fight a 4th week just for that? ('Fair fight' ... They're outnumbering us with better-than-standard equipment and superior special abilities and you think THEY are at the disadvantage? Keep in mind they do not have the armor equipped, and it was Luni who equipped them, not Kaigan) Fight rewards are thus: Rewards: 2xECL7 + 4xCR4 (2 x 2600gp) + (4 x 1200gp) = 10000 gp -400 Mercenary = 9600 gp -Ally Penalty (-16.67% )= 8000 gp /2 Split Reward = 4000 gp each XP: (2 x 1600xp) + (4 x 600xp) = 5600 xp -Ally Penalty (-16.67% ) = 4666 xp /2 Split Reward = 2333 xp each Final Rewards: Vandelar and Dameon each earn 2333 xp and 4000 gp. Dameon earns 160gp from Profession. |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 12:41 PM | The problem I have with all of this is that I would be adjudicating above and beyond your tactics to account for your characters intelligence. In this arena environment, that really shouldn't be done unless the tactics of a person break down completely, and even then you really shouldn't give an advantage because of a number in the INT score. That would just give a huge tactical advantage to all wizards and psions and allow their players to slack off writing tactics, which is not fair to all others involved. You had a contingency for her failing the save, and that was to max damage. You did not mention at all to move away or take cover or use your familiar for the attack. I consider this unfair to your opponent to adjudicate this because I'm practically just making you win at that point. I mean, if I'm going to give you the move back, touch with hawk, etc. that is not in your tactics then I should have had Ural use one of her many available move actions to tell Lady to attack so she would still get an attack that round. That's still a huge advantage to you. Right now, you are losing because of the way I believe the Defend trick works and because your tactics weren't specific, you assumed that I would read into them and use your characters Int to make up for where your tactics left off, and that is not at all what I interpret my job as Pitlord to be. Not only is this an exercise in whose build is better and who is luckier, but this is also a learning experience of what tactics work, and what tactics don't. What you should and shouldn't do against certain types of opponent. I would be very generous, in my opinion, to even give you the extra 5ft step because the only thing you mention about 5ft steps is to use them to avoid AoO's so I stepped you out of range, had you cast, stepped you in range to cast Shocking Grasp because you did not mention using the familiar to attack at all. Yes, you used it in previous battles, but for all I know you had a specific reason to not use it in this one. You didn't mention it so it didn't get used. I am trying my best to leave you satisfied with this fight, but we evidently have very different expectations of the duties of a player and the duties of a pitlord. I truly feel that after review of your tactics and the abilities/skills involved there is no reason for an alteration of this fight. I will be more than happy to continue to discuss this with you, but I must say that you will need a better argument than that it did not do justice to your characters intelligence. I will say right now that it is your job to make sure your tactics do him justice(or surpass him, I've seen some very good tactics from you on other fights, if I recall correctly.) and not mine as pitlord to interpret tactics with an adaption towards character intelligence. Thank you for listening, Sorry if you are still dissatisfied, -Chris |

But Kaigan gave them equipment that rendered their teleport ability useless, so they actually entered the fight more handicapped by their equipment than helped. Incidentally, this is why you rarely see a Balor in full plate armor.... Well, accidents will happen I guess. Just count your blessings and hope I won't Pitlord your next monster team fight. ;) I didn't give them the equipment. I was using what was there, since this was week two, I just used the stats given to me. I could roll for the grapple to damage, but I don't have the time now, and I don't believe it would affect the fight. At most, they would just die a little later. I would have used the teleport, but as I said above, I did not equip them. |
| Huan02-01-06, 12:45 PM | Maybe it was missed: See above (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8369437). |

| Usurpator02-01-06, 12:55 PM | @Usurpator Post-tactics for a monster... interesting. I believe you are the first to propose that, but must we hold off the conclusion of this this fight a 4th week just for that?. Certainly not! I was just browsing, and if I see something I really don't understand, I have a tendency to post it. The CoCo is meant as a fun leisure activity but also as learning experience. I guess we have learned from this fight that equipping outsiders that have teleport without error with half-plate is generally a bad idea. We also learned that evard's black tentacles don't work the way Kaigan thinks they did. Valuable lessons learned I would say. |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 12:57 PM | @Dracazar - It is no problem. I am very willing to explain myself to the people I Pitlord for, as I realize many people have differences in the style they use to Pitlord. Not to mention I'm just the kind of person who is pathetically eager to mediate any and all disputes, especially if they involve me. I'm a Psychology major and it shows, I try my best to help everyone feel as satisfied as I possibly can and help them with any problems that may arise. Anyway, like I said, it is no problem, and I hope you are not too irritated with my decision. -Chris |
| Pittbull02-01-06, 01:08 PM | @DTFarstar/Pittbull: Major issue with the Sir Valkin/Boraxx fight: So Boraxx, while mounted on Lara - would not be able to take advantage of this feat. Oh my god I forgot that! If you want the fight to be held, I'm OK with that! Then charge shouldn't be a charge but a normal attack. |
| Huan02-01-06, 01:10 PM | Whoops! I forgot the Trog clerics are ECL 7 and not 5... Correct rewards: Rewards: 2xECL7 + 4xCR4 (2 x 2600gp) + (4 x 1200gp) = 10000 gp -400 Mercenary = 9600 gp -Ally Penalty (-16.67% )= 8000 gp /2 Split Reward = 4000 gp each XP: (2 x 1600xp) + (4 x 600xp) = 5600 xp -Ally Penalty (-16.67% ) = 4666 xp /2 Split Reward = 2333 xp each Final Rewards: Vandelar and Dameon each earn 2333 xp and 4000 gp. Dameon earns 160gp from Profession. |

| DTFarstar02-01-06, 01:22 PM | @TelinArtho & Pittbull - I'll jump over really quick and reroll the damage to account for no charge. I can't believe I missed that... grrr.. If Valkin is still standing anyway, then I'll continue on from there, we'll see. |
| Usurpator02-01-06, 01:27 PM | Whoops! I forgot the Trog clerics are ECL 7 and not 5... Correct rewards: The final rewards you mention are not correct. Trogs are CR 1, five levels of Cleric adds +5 to that for a total CR of 6. You never use ECL for calculating XP awards, you use CR. Besides, the ECL for those Trogs is 9 not 7 (2 HD, +2 level adjustment, +5 levels of Cleric). @Kaigan, you just have to modify the totals I mentioned previously by the ally penalty (-16,67%) |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 01:42 PM | @TelinArtho & Pittbull - I edited the Boraxx vs. Valkin (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8366927&postcount=150) fight in to make the correct damage off the non-charge and such, it made the fight last one round longer and Boraxx take some more damage, but nothing else changed. |
| SoulLord02-01-06, 01:47 PM | so going by that 2x lvl 5 Cleric Troglodytes (ECL 6 each) 4x Hound Archons (ECL 4 each) XP: 4*600 for the Hound Archons + 2* 1200 for the Trogs = 4800 total Gold: 4*1200 gp. for the Hound Archons + 2*2000 for the Trogs = 8800 total Vandelar: 2400 XP / 4400 gp. Dameon: 2400 XP / 4400 gp. it would be Vandelar: 2400(-16.67%)= 2000 XP / 4400 (-16.67%)= 3666.5 gp. Dameon: 2400 (-16.67%)= 2000 XP / 4400 (-16.67%)= 3666.5 gp. Is this correct? |
| Usurpator02-01-06, 02:00 PM | so going by that it would be Vandelar: 2400(-16.67%)= 2000 XP / 4400 (-16.67%)= 3666.5 gp. Dameon: 2400 (-16.67%)= 2000 XP / 4400 (-16.67%)= 3666.5 gp. Is this correct? Yep, that's it... |
| Usurpator02-01-06, 02:05 PM | @Dracazar: Rolled the push for Husk, which was succesfull [11]+13 = 24 vs. DC 20 Rolled the attack for Husk, which hit [19]+7 = 26 vs. AC 20 Rolled the damage [1]+3 = 4 Rolled the trip [8]+3 vs. [18]+2, fails. Rolled the 2nd attack for Hust, which misses [9]+7 = 16 vs. AC 20 This will cause an extra CLW charge stricken of for Feradeth....., but unfortunately for Uilo, it does not change in the result.... |
| TelinArtho02-01-06, 03:01 PM | @TelinArtho & Pittbull - I edited the Boraxx vs. Valkin (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8366927&postcount=150) fight in to make the correct damage off the non-charge and such, it made the fight last one round longer and Boraxx take some more damage, but nothing else changed. Tough to see what has changed. Essentially he's able to move in and attack? Is that it? I guess I'm fine with the fight though - it was mostly decided on Boraxx's excellent attack rolls and my mediocre-bad ones. As to the Ural vs Drac fight - nothing has changed right. There's a lot of discussion on whether Lady Esmelda would have attacked after coming out of the daze - and the fact of the matter is that Ural had already been making Esmelda attack with the trample - so regardless of the defend feat - that action should still be in play. /d |
| DTFarstar02-01-06, 03:19 PM | Nothing changed on Drac vs. Ural, and yeah, he just closed instead of charged and the fight played out the same from there. |
| Kaigan02-01-06, 03:34 PM | so going by that it would be Vandelar: 2400(-16.67%)= 2000 XP / 4400 (-16.67%)= 3666.5 gp. Dameon: 2400 (-16.67%)= 2000 XP / 4400 (-16.67%)= 3666.5 gp. Is this correct? Has been changed, thanks for the help Usurpator, Soullord, and Huan. |
| Skojar02-01-06, 04:40 PM | I had the DC wrong...it is 25. However, the first time, it has to be activated blindly, as per the UMD skill: Once it has been activated once, then it becomes no check at all, because the wand is on Sybil's spell list. Also, spell trigger items, by definition, require a command word, hence the need to activate blindly the first time with UMD: So a DC 25 UMD check is required the first time to figure out the command word, and then from there, since it is on Sybil's spell list, it can be used with no check. But again, that does not address whether using someone else's expendables is allowed or not. I think you're reading into these definitions. Your conclusions are not stated anywhere in the quote. Look again: ...Normally, to use a wand, you must have the wand’s spell on your class spell list. This use of the skill allows you to use a wand as if you had a particular spell on your class spell list.... ..No gestures or spell finishing is needed, just a special knowledge of spellcasting that an appropriate character would know, and a single word that must be spoken. Anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spell trigger item that stores that spell. I can only infer from this that the single word is known to anyone with the spell list, and is not unique to each wand. All wands of fireball would have the same single word. This is supported byt he fact that 'command word' has its own clear definition. It is a type of activation completely seperate from spell trigger, not a subset of the spell trigger activation: Command Word If no activation method is suggested either in the magic item description or by the nature of the item, assume that a command word is needed to activate it. Command word activation means that a character speaks the word and the item activates. No other special knowledge is needed. A command word can be a real word, but when this is the case, the holder of the item runs the risk of activating the item accidentally by speaking the word in normal conversation. More often, the command word is some seemingly nonsensical word, or a word or phrase from an ancient language no longer in common use. Activating a command word magic item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Sometimes the command word to activate an item is written right on the item. Occasionally, it might be hidden within a pattern or design engraved on, carved into, or built into the item, or the item might bear a clue to the command word. The Knowledge (arcana) and Knowledge (history) skills might be useful in helping to identify command words or deciphering clues regarding them. A successful check against DC 30 is needed to come up with the word itself. If that check is failed, succeeding on a second check (DC 25) might provide some insight into a clue. The spells identify and analyze dweomer both reveal command words. The only check I can see as being appropriate is one to know what spell is in the wand, and that's part of the using other's expendables debate being discussed elsewhere. However, a character that has an unknown wand in hand should at least have the option of attempting to activate it by simply going through all of the spells on his list of 4th level or lower (one at a time, each a standard action) and if the right one is hit, then the wand functions. All that a UMD check would do is speed up the process. Of course, the PitLord might be inclined to have the character make an Intelligence check to guess what are likely spells, or a percentile roll (30% chance) to see if there is some special marking that provides a clue (and if it is ruled that all gladiators have perfect knowledge of their opponent's equipment, then the list of possible wands is very limited, making the question moot.) The most straightforward and by-the-book solution is to simply say: yes, gladiator's are informed of their opponent's inventory (otherwise, wouldn't we have to limit the information available to the players when writing tactics?) and therefore the character who stole whe wand can use the wand either because it contains a spell on his spell list or because he is able to make a UMD check if it is not. |
| Dracazar02-02-06, 04:18 AM | @DTFarstar: I accept your decision but I still think that it is unfair. You did a whole new run because Ural asked to use horse attacks and I only asked to use my wizard as a Wizard and not as a Barbarian and you refused because that would change the winner. Yes, it is true, but also Ural's changes changed the winner. Also you admit that you aren't very proficient with mounts and now you strongly affirm that an horse blinded and stunned with the master still stunned Defends the master with attacks also if not commanded at all and uses all 3 attacks and the master doesn't fall down even if still stunned. @Usurpator: Thank you very much. |
