Fights of the Week: July 18th

Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM MindwandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Link to pairings.
Make sure that your character is not in prison.

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help.
You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool used to suffice until it got taken down without giving us proper notification... the Nerve
Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Recent News and Developments
Current discussions in the council are still up for debate. In the coming weeks, Lighting is expected to be added into the mix. Stay tuned for more details.

Denth is coming - but who will he attack first?

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!
MindWandererB

07-18-07, 01:36 PM
Lighting is scheduled to be added in two weeks (August 1).

Pairings may be a little bit later than usual today.
MindWandererB

07-18-07, 05:17 PM
Pairings done.

Credits will be up later. Corrections may also take longer than usual, so be patient and read the FotW thread before writing tactics.

Sorry, I don't do requests. Inter-leagues are assigned as-needed only.

Pardon, but shouldn't I have another A1 in there? The A-1 for activating 3 characters, the A1 for Guildlords duty?

Kathren Durrol (Zevox) vs. Phacce (UserNamer) vs. Daren Legrad (Yitzi) vs. Atemu (Korone) : TelinArtho [City] [All-vs-All]
Well well now - Kathren's first all vs all. Good thing shes on fight 3 with most of her spells left. That'll be a interesting one.

Elrick Flamebrother (templer10) vs. Arden Tarmik (Zevox) : TelinArtho [Cavern]
You know, I somehow suspected this would happen. Lets see if I can knock that little Druid off his winning streak before he can tie Ceilia's record.

Malik of Black Robe (Malither76) vs. Ceilia Durrol (Zevox) : templer10 [City]
Well now, that'll be a real challenge. I have a feeling it'll come down to who can attack first.

If memory serves
F = number of fights run
G = guildmaster
A = administrative (guildlord, scribelord, etc.)
A-# = extra active characters
Q = Questlording
Q-# = character on quest

Might I suggest comming up with some different letter codes for A/A and Q/Q to clarify a bit?

So to respond to Zevox; I think Z should have a guildmaster credit and a guildlords credit (A1 G1)

Heh...I'm sure this won't fly....but maybe I could interest someone in running a couple of low-level (ECL's 4 and 3) monster fights for 2 of my PC's? I could have them ready in a few minutes.....<shrug>

The only thing I see is that I asked to have Dragor RUN, which would result in a charge one round earlier.
But since that wouldnt change the result, you dont have to edit the fight unless you have to edit anyway because of some other issue Eluria might have.

Rewards should be (900-25%=)675xp/gp for Korwald and (300+25%=)375xp/gp for Phaelen.

Thanks for running!

*chuckles* Lets just say I'm very happy to hear you say that.

As for the flames, yeah, I figured you'd do that. They don't ignore Vigor, though - why would you think they did? The best they can do vs vigor is that they don't actually bring it down, so its impossible to gain more hp by replacing it unless something else does.

Nice and clean run Eluria there is only 1 thing that you forgot in the summary for Snaga. You have to list the spell levels used by him with the spells not just the spells. He used 3 of them this fight. (color spray= 1 Summon Swarm =2)

Also you cut the top section of Xanavar sheet and with that you deleted the skill package line wich links to the rules of gladius thread. It shouldn't matter much but you better keep that bit in the fight post. Other than that good job on yout first fight

Actually, he doesn't need to do that. Its easy to count up the spell levels from knowing which spells were cast. I know I never bother listing the total spell levels used in my wrap-ups - its far more important to know what was actually cast, so you know what spells should be marked off the sheet (or how many spell slots were lost from each level for a Sorcerer).

Until your fight cycle is over, it is considered lost. After 2 more fights though, you get it back.

Wrong. Sundered/broken items are returned after the fight - so that you aren't hampered by that in your next fights.
stimpydoda

07-20-07, 01:46 AM
Why aren't mounts returned then?
Zevox

07-20-07, 02:18 AM
Why aren't mounts returned then?
Because it was decided that allies wouldn't be returned until the end of the cycle, to make their deaths meaningful and give people a reason to be cautious with them. Sundered items have always been returned immediately for fairly obvious reasons. Sunder all of a warrior's weapons and hes suddenly totally unable to harm his foes, sunder a wizard's spell component pouch and hes unable to cast many spells, etc - sundering items can easily render characters powerless, losing allies won't do that unless the character is totally focused on allies, in which case thats a risk they take having a character who depends on others to do his work.

There are so many monster fights that are near-auto-wins for the monster... there should be some that are easy for the PC. Besides, an enchantment/telepathy specialist in the Cavern might find these at least a moderate challenge....

That AC loss for wildshaping is a killer....

Not that it matters, but Elrick and Grimlock were both doing nonlethal damage in that grapple. It would have been relevant if Arden had wanted to renew Vigor, as templer had feared.
Zevox

07-20-07, 01:54 PM
That AC loss for wildshaping is a killer....
That was the plan. Templer10 overstimated his chances in a grapple, which is why I was glad to hear he thought he'd win in one.

Just one question Telin - shouldn't Wild Shaping in a grapple require a concentration check (flat DC 20)? I mean, its a supernatural ability thats quite similar to a spell, so I would presume it requires concentration to pull off.

Zevox
TelinArtho

Frankly - I thought so as well but couldn't find anything that said it did. If you can find something - please do let me know...

Supernatural Abilities: These abilities cannot be disrupted in combat, as spells can, and they generally do not provoke attacks of opportunity. Supernatural abilities are not subject to spell resistance, counterspells, or to being dispelled by dispel magic, and do not function in areas where magic is suppressed or negated.

TY for the run - unfortunntly there are a few mistakes -

i did in round 1 Barkskin for +3 AC (that carry over to wildshape) and drank in round 2 Shield of faith (+2 deflection) so my AC while wildshaped is 15+2+3=20 and NOT 17.

that means that the attacks in round 7, 8, 12, And 1 of the attacks in round 13 (since shield of faith runs out but barkskin didnt). DIDNT hit and so iam owed back a whole lot of HP - 40 to be exact.

also - iam not dead - just uncouncios - so should grimlock still fight?

Fight result changed.

He did eh? I didn't notice that. Good then. Though I still think I'll try and set the bar a bit higher with her - one more win and she has the same winning streak as The Harvester did, and with a better PR (well, she already has the latter, but the combo would be nice to have). Of course, she faces a pretty substantial challenge to that goal this week. Which reminds me, I need to write her tactics.

Slight problem... protection from good protects against all summoned monsters that aren't evil aligned, if it was a evil bear it would have no effect... hence the downfall of being neutral is effected by just about all of protection spells..

Third, the spell prevents bodily contact by summoned creatures. This causes the natural weapon attacks of such creatures to fail and the creatures to recoil if such attacks require touching the warded creature. Good summoned creatures are immune to this effect. The protection against contact by summoned creatures ends if the warded creature makes an attack against or tries to force the barrier against the blocked creature. Spell resistance can allow a creature to overcome this protection and touch the warded creature.

Please note that it doesn't say good and neutral

btw - facing elric on the plains... not a good way to survive....

You wanted to prove a point on Prot. Good, but you quoted Prot. Evil. This spell functions like protection from evil, except that the deflection and resistance bonuses apply to attacks from good creatures, and good summoned creatures cannot touch the subject.I don't know why they're not parallel effects, but they're not. Since the wolf isn't good, it's not affected.

@templer10: Rewards are wrong on that one. It seems you didn't penalize Jonathaon for his cohort. He's at -25%, Aerryl is at -15.625%, so net difference is +/- 9.375%, meaning 3281 XP/6343.75 gp for Aerryl and 906 XP/1751.78 gp for Jonathon.

Also, it seems you had Longshot refresh Vigor when it had been depleted by only 1 point. Edit: Oh, I see, you just neglected to mention the damage in round 5.

You need to have either coordinates or maps! There's no way of knowing where anything was. For instance, I can't tell why both harpies weren't hit in round 6.

Also... the rules are vague: what does "race" mean? Templer probably assumed that if there was a template, you'd have mentioned it, and didn't check the CR. We should probably define that term better.

For instance, I can't tell why both harpies weren't hit in round 6.The only reason I didn't have maps was that NOBODY WAS MOVING! Longshot was on a steed that was standing there to be slain and the harpies wanted melee with Longshot. Also, both harpies were hit, one of them just survived it. Look at the HP.

Telveran Trueblade vs. Tieflingette MacRogue is up. This pitlord humbly requests that players not include using items their characters don't own in their tactics. It changed a lot when I noticed Telveran didn't have a second blur scroll--and he'd mentioned using 3 or more in his tactics. On a related note--if you're going to use UPD to manifest Psychic Warrior powers, make sure you either have 11+ WIS or enough UPD to fake it....

Well there is a bit of an issue. When blinded - Kracknol has to move at half speed - which means he cannot take a 5ft step at all. Movement will draw attacks of opportunity and he won't be able to execute a full attack that round.

Blinded: The character cannot see. He takes a –2 penalty to Armor Class, loses his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any), moves at half speed, and takes a –4 penalty on Search checks and on most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks. All checks and activities that rely on vision (such as reading and Spot checks) automatically fail. All opponents are considered to have total concealment (50% miss chance) to the blinded character. Characters who remain blinded for a long time grow accustomed to these drawbacks and can overcome some of them.

You can only take a 5-foot-step if your movement isn’t hampered by difficult terrain or darkness. Any creature with a speed of 5 feet or less can’t take a 5-foot step, since moving even 5 feet requires a move action for such a slow creature.

If you could review that - I would be very much appreciative.

As to my options - they were limited for this fight. With both opponents able to fly, I had to weigh choosing the weaker flying summons or hope that I am engaged in melee. I chose the former just on the hope to get around the issue.

EDIT - and I don't know who's sheet you are looking at but Kraegin does in fact have a shield.

I chose the former just on the hope to get around the issue. You didn't necessarily have to do that--Kracknol rarely if ever seems to opt for ranged attacks, so you might have been able to bet that he'd close to melee. And Besthirah can't use a bow while flying, so she'd either have to land or fly close enough to melee.

I kind of hope I get the chance to "earn" that victory.

I'd think it's possible. You move at half your normal climb speed, which reflects the time you need to grope around for hand/footholds, but that should be the extent of the penalty.

Mohmat vs Lady Liara is up. A come-from-behind winner match which was fairly suspenseful to run for a few rounds - not bad I'd say.

Oh shoot, I always forget that one (the mandatory half speed while blinded - never made that much sense to me - not the no 5' stepping while slowed). That'll change things, yeah - I'll edit it tomorrow.

Both your opponents could fly, true, but one couldn't attack while doing so, and the other is built entirely around melee alpha strikes. It seems to me that flying monsters are little to no threat to them were probably not the way to go.

EDIT - and I don't know who's sheet you are looking at but Kraegin does in fact have a shield.
He does? *checks* Huh, so he does. I thought that you had +1 armor.

...so then, that changes my question to: why didn't you buy even basic enchantments for the armor and shield yet? Seriously, its only 1k each to get them to +1, and by that level the 4k for +2 is hardly unreasonable either. Every little bit helps you know.

Mohmat vs Lady Liara is up. A come-from-behind winner match which was fairly suspenseful to run for a few rounds - not bad I'd say.One minor thing, one less minor thing:

First, in round 6, Mohmat double-moves, then dismounts. That's not a valid set of timing: when you take a single action, it occurs at the midpoint of the horse's move. This would be like double-moving and attacking. Mohmat doesn't even have the option of double-moving and fast dismounting, because you have to have a move action left to even try (even if it's an auto-success).

Second, why doesn't Share Pain share nonlethal damage? The power is quoted below; I see nothing that suggests nonlethal damage would be exempt.
This power creates a psychometabolic connection between you and a willing subject so that some of your wounds are transferred to the subject. You take half damage from all attacks that deal hit point damage to you, and the subject takes the remainder. The amount of damage not taken by you is taken by the subject. If your hit points are reduced by a lowered Constitution score, that reduction is not shared with the subject because it is not a form of hit point damage. When this power ends, subsequent damage is no longer divided between the subject and you, but damage already shared is not reassigned.

that whole thing was discussed awhen myself with lord lorian start doing the whole sahre pain+vigor thing and it was ruled by at least zevox and another elder (i think telin - not sure) taht since nonlethal damage isnt actually HP damage by defenition in the SRD it isnt shared:

"Certain attacks deal nonlethal damage. Other effects, such as heat or being exhausted, also deal nonlethal damage. When you take nonlethal damage, keep a running total of how much you’ve accumulated. Do not deduct the nonlethal damage number from your current hit points. It is not "real" damage"

and zevox - i didnt bring the horse becuase i didnt want it dieing on teh map where it was least usefull and when i was kind of forgetfull and didnt buy a spare (not a light warhorse spare anyway).

Because non-lethal damage does not actually remove hp from a character, and the power specifically says it only transfers hit point damage. This is a call I made once before, actually.

Well I don't have a lot of reasoning for it, but essentially, I've been using Magic Vestment to cover up some of the AC deficiency (would've had it for this fight if the time roll was 3 or less...). Ironically enough, Kraegin hasn't really had much of an issue with his AC lately. Every opponent of his has been caught up so well in the summons - that the AC hasn't been a pressing issue. It is, however, on my list of things to improve sooner rather than later...

Also, I was wondering if someone could post an official battle for last week's fight of Isaiah Shar vs Eluria. I posted a request in the July 11th Comments and Concerns thread but there was no response.

Last I checked, that was only the case with attacks or spells. Nothing prevents using other actions after a mount double-moves.Why would it be? Timing-wise, an action is an action. Our Court Decisions explicitly extend this to all standard and full-round actions, but it should ally to move actions as well. Wouldn't it seem odd if a character could move 150' in a round by double-moving on a mount, fast-dismounting, and moving another 30' on their own? The mount and rider act simultaneously, so that's impossible.

The former is an honest error, but one which can't change the fight (Kracknol has too much hp left).

The latter I caught (though technically Blindness imposes a -2 to his AC, it doesn't give you +2 to attack).

Well - you are missing something in there.

The augmented centipede has a +7 attack bonus (which is noted in the roller). The roller indicates a 22. In that round, he has flanking, so that's a +2 - so it should be a hit.

Since Kracknol only has 16 hp left (after the AoO on the following round) - and the centipede's damage at 2d6+7 - there's a distinct possibility he's down. Plus there's the chance that Torrent hits.

You're looking at the round 11 AoO, correct? If so, the Centipede does not have flanking. The mapped Wasp and Torrent had maneuvered to flank with each other in round 10, and Kracknol is treated as in the space he started in for the AoO, which does not give the Centipede flanking with either of the others. And the Wasp that didn't fit on the map had just dived from off west, and couldn't provide flanking for any of them.

Edit: Note that the map in that round has Kracknol's marker only in his ending spot, since Torrent moved into the space he began in thereafter and the mapper doesn't let me place more than one pin per space.

According to the round summary - the positions are difficult to determine. This is the map according to the positions (taking out Besthirah since she wasn't there):

http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=plains;a=Name,M,7,8;b=N ame,M,10,9;c=tor,M,6,8,same as kracknol;d=Name,H,8,8;e=Name,L,9,11;f=Na me,L,7,9

Torrent (green) is listed at the same location as Kracknol. Regardless, Torrent should be able to move to (7,7,2) and give flanking to both the centipede and the wasp. I don't know where you had it move since the locations are not correct, and they are not updated for the following round.
Zevox

07-23-07, 01:09 PM
You can, actually: you just have to edit the code manually [...]
Well, considering I don't have the first clue how to do that, for my fights you'll just have to make do with maps that might be missing something in that regard.

Zevox
Zevox

07-23-07, 01:12 PM
MWB has the map for that round right. Toss in the second Wasp over Torrent's head and it should be obvious what I'm talking about.

Code: Red = Besthira, Blue = Kracknol, Green = Kraegin, Magenta = Torrent, Brown = Centipede, Olive = Wasp.

Okay - then I am confused about how the centipede cannot be flanking with Kracknol sandwiched between the large wasp and huge centipede.

Okay - then I am confused about how the centipede cannot be flanking with Kracknol sandwiched between the large wasp and huge centipede.
This may help: it's the map with all the movement removed. This is how things stand at the moment of the attack in question. Kracknol (in blue) is flanked by Torrent (magenta) and the wasp (olive), but not by the centipede (brown).

But there's another wasp directly above kracknol - which means the bottom corner square of the centipede would follow a line through the bottom of kracknol up into the top of Kracknol to the wasp above him.

EDIT - for the remaining fights I have to run - I am doing my best to work on them - but I've somehow gotten the crap-end of a stick at work, so things are very difficult to get done right now. I should still be able to finish them before the hard deadline - but the soft deadline is probably not going to happen.

I am planning on running the Vandelar vs Gareth fight first, and then will move on to the FFA.

I think I see this. Here's a cross-section of how I'm reading the map and what you're saying:
http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=Krac,M,7,2,Krac knol;b=Cent,H,8,2,Centipede;c=Wasp,L,6,4 ,Wasp;los=8,1,7,3,3
Problem is, flanking is based on centers, not corners. So it's actually this:
http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=Krac,M,7,2,Krac knol;b=Cent,H,8,2,Centipede;c=Wasp,L,6,4 ,Wasp;los=7,4,9,1,3
TelinArtho

07-23-07, 02:42 PM
Almost:

Exception: If a flanker takes up more than 1 square, it gets the flanking bonus if any square it occupies counts for flanking.
Only a creature or character that threatens the defender can help an attacker get a flanking bonus.

See what I mean?
MindWandererB

Almost:

See what I mean?
Ah, missed that. Okay, so we have to imagine a line running from the center of one of the wasp's top squares to the center of one of the centipede's bottom squares. The LOS program doesn't do centers, so we have to do it ourselves.
http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=Krac,M,7,2,Krac knol;b=Cent,H,8,2,Centipede;c=Wasp,L,6,4 ,Wasp;los=6,4,8,1,3
Yeah, it looks like a line from what on this representation is the centipede's SW corner to the wasp's NW corner would count as flanking.

Edit: See below. Map changed to reflect this, clearly visible.
TelinArtho

07-23-07, 03:08 PM
Actually - it is easiest to look at the middle left square of the centipede in that diagram and the bottom left of the wasp - those are at exact opposite sides of Kracknol.

One-quarter your current land speed except for things that do not boost other movement modes.

As much as I hate to point it out, I did ask to shoot summons first (under the assumption that Kraegin would be more healthy than he turned out to be at this point). Unless Telin wants to save you the time of running it out by surrendering, Besthirah should be shooting bugs.
TelinArtho

07-23-07, 04:02 PM
Nah - that's fine. The summons would be merely pincussions at this point anyway and Kraegin didn't have the health to manage a survival defense strategy...

Tiris Rush vs. Unknown Monster
1 Owlbear [CR4]
These tactics are in addition to the general tactics listed on my sheet.

Ick...a large creature in the cavern. Methinks this is gonna be a grapple-fest, and I am gonna lose.

Alright...since this map makes melee a foregone conclusion, lets see if I can stave it off for a while.

Start me closest to center with adamantine greataxe in hand.

R1: Manifest a 3 pp Expansion. Let's even the size playing field. Move out clockwise looking for my opponent.
R2: Manifest Prescience (Offensive) and find my opponent.

From here, attempt to attack in melee with the greataxe. I'm hoping to mow the thing down before it can do the same to me.

If I get grappled, use the attack an opponent action to deal subdual damage with a -4 attack penalty. I'm hoping I have better odds this way than I do trying to outgrapple something that is inherently large.

Either I am going to squeak by on this one or get squashed, methinks. We'll see.

If you have any questions, PM me.

War Machine vs Unknown Monster
1 Blue Telepath3 [CR3]
These tactics are in addition to the general tactics listed on my sheet.

Start front and left of center with Exp Retreat wand in off hand and wand of MM in primary hand.

Since this thing is small, I am banking that it has slower movement than I will with my wand. So we are going to go with run n' gun tactics. Zap myself with the Exp Retreat wand and go looking for my opponent. As soon as I see it, start flinging MM at it. Stay out of melee unless I see that the MM are not doing anything, which means it has spell resistance. As long as they are getting through, plink it to death while refreshing the speed boost as needed (as long as movement is still in an issue in the fight) to stay away from it.

If the MM aren't getting through, then switch tactics. Stow the MM wand, draw the halberd, base it and trip it. Repeat as needed until brain activity ceases.

That's about all I can plan for without knowing more...hopefully that will do the trick. If you have any questions, PM me.

Any takers? I appreciate it.

More importantly, the timing is off. A 1-round casting time spell is finished at the beginning of your turn. So in round 2, Balthazar does nothing, when he could be casting Sleep again. Then in round 3, he'd cast Summon Instrument, and in round 4 he'd get a Sound Burst, followed by a second Sound Burst in round 5 if Razorfang fails his save vs. stun. Of course, then he's down to his scythe and the fight is over, so there's technically no need for correction... but I can't figure why hogarth wanted to bother. The chances of Sound Burst + scythe winning were all but nothing--might as well surrender at that point. (Not that Balthazar is meant to be doing any winning... I'm just sayin'.)

I've not problems, you did an excellent job. I was in a bit of a hurry when I wrote those tactics, and wasn't thinking straight about HiPS.

I saw some of the comments below. Retikos was using the PoP to recover Mage Armor, that's why it wasn't crossed off the spell list. Cus had both of the prebuffs marked off her list, and I recorded all of them in the prebuff section. So I think I had it right. I had the "conditional modifiers" for AC from the spells listed off to the right in blue... I thought that's where it should be listed? I'll put the total in the front where it's less likely to be missed.

Retikos has been lucky with mind thrust and death by massive damage. He got Asran with one in the IMT. At least one of my characters has a bit of luck... Kracknol got shafted this week.

One problem: even if Lightwolf can't see Nadir, he can still have told Squeak beforehand to grapple Nadir under the conditions mentioned, and Squeak, who can see, will do so.
Of course, Lightwolf won anyway, so I won't press the point (only possible difference is whether Zodiac ends up using his ghoul touch.

Cleric vs improved invisble flying wizard - not fair if you ask me.
I really don't agree with your application of the delay penalty here. Not that it shouldn't be used, but that it should be applied equally to Malik - hes delaying Ceilia's ability to attack him with Improved Invis in the same manner as she is delaying him with Obscuring Mist. Should not both lose their hiding spells at the same time then?

One other objection: why did Ceilia waste her time casting resist energy on King when he was disabled and Malik had cast both of his fireballs? His only remaining fire spells are scorching rays, which she can defend him from with Mounted Combat, and in any event with him disabled its unlikely to be worth it. Seems a waste of a scroll to me.

As for the area dispel, thats an all but useless option for the spell, since it targets the highest CL spell first, which with someone like Malither who has several buff spells memorized means it'll probably be picking a random spell from among several (I didn't know he would only use his Improved Invis from those memorized buffs when writing my tactics). Really not worth the risk.

The first 20 rounds of the FFA is up. I'm really not sure where to go at this point because the only one who can effectively do anything to an opponent has such avoidance tactics that he shouldn't be in there in the first place and even if he wanted to - his opponents have such a speed advantage over him that he would have a hard time to force it anyway...

So, um, if Phacce is shooting MMs at Starlight, why on earth is Kathren ignoring him and only attacking Atemu? That seems kinda dumb, doesn't it? I mean, I know I never specified an order of preference to attack foes in, but it seems taking down one thats attacking her preferred method of movement is the smart thing to do.

And if Starlight is killed, why didn't she can Expeditious Retreat from her scroll? Thats kind of important, considering its her main protection from Daren.

I saw some of the comments below. Retikos was using the PoP to recover Mage Armor, that's why it wasn't crossed off the spell list. The Pearl explains why mage armor wasn't crossed off, yeah. But Cus needs to cross the spells she imbued off her list, since she only removed Imbue With Spell Ability and Magic Vestment. As for the modifiers, I expect a prebuffed spell to be in the main breakdown of AC (like I did with Senorda on Asran's sheet for instance - mage armor right in her main AC). As a conditional modifier I think it only applies if cast in the battle when I look at it.

One more bump in hopes that Tiris' fight can be run by someone.....should be a really short fight, but I really don't want it to get held over or cancelled.

Really not worth the risk.

about the delay penalty - you werent attacking essentially from round 1 but you werent doing ANYTHING from round 6 if i remmber correctly

malik was attacking all the time up to the round in which you and bishop were in teh mist (10 i think or 9) so he still had a few more rounds of delay counter before he got penalized.

About the ressist fire - i really didnt want to cast it but the tactics said 2 and you didnt include any kind of modifier when NOT to cast it (and i looked) - i suppose it's common sense but iam not fond of improv and only do them if i have 2

I'm forced to consider getting Sdentch a cohort. I hate to have to think about it, but it's pretty evident that it's necessary.

What would go best with her abilities I wonder?

I'm thinking arcane magic user. Wizard or Sorcerer (I like sorcerer best -- biggest arcane bang-for-buck paired with big melee bang-for-buck).

It would like to stay away from something that is totally dependent on Sdentch for success (like a buff machine). Something that makes up for her weakness, but is still a threat. Maybe an arcane archer? That sounds interesting.

Psionics really aren't in Sdentch's makeup (I only use expansion tattoos b/c of the outsider race making enlarge person useless).

Maybe an adept? The mix of arcane and divine in that class is comforting, and I like diversity. Not a whole lot of bang, though.

Anyone have any thoughts?

@TM: If you're trying to avoid psionics, then what Sdentch lacks is both ranged and magical support. My strongest inclination would be to copy McJarvis's Illustrated Man: a Battle Sorcerer with the Simple Variant for an animal companion. Focus on archery feats (an elf or aasimar might be good here, for the bow prof), and you'll have everything Sdentch lacks. The simple variant isn't truly necessary, but it buys the cohort a dire bat mount (of which, as you know, I am a big fan). Otherwise, a traditional sorcerer would be a good way to go.

Arcane archers, IMHO, are a poor option for a gish. With no caster progression, they function best the same way as a dragon disciple: just a dip into arcane casting to qualify, then archery specialization.

Imbue with spell like ability has a permanent duration. So it can be cast at any time, and the resulting spell slots refilled. Only the 4th level spell slot is required to remain unused till the transfered spells are all cast.
Do spell storing items carry over between cycles then? I thought they didn't for some reason.

Chalk this one up to tactics for your opponent that won't work. Your method for dealing with Phacce is to cast color spray to disable him/allies and then use shocking grasps with your familiar.

Compared to the valid tactic to take out Atemu - where the tactics will certainly work. So essentially I had to choose between improvising a tactic for Phacce right away when I had a valid tactic for engaging Atemu right away. When given a choice between improvising an uncertain tactic and using a tactic that won't need improvising, you can probably guess which I will choose.

For expeditious retreat, you did cast it as soon as was reasonable to do so (in such a way that you don't lose a shocking grasp on Zephyrus and such).

Actually, my main tactics for Phacce was simply the grasps. If you'll note, the result of the color spray was completely irrelevant to the tactics that followed - it was just there to help out, it wasn't some lynch-pin part of the plan.

For expeditious retreat, you did cast it as soon as was reasonable to do so (in such a way that you don't lose a shocking grasp on Zephyrus and such).
Okay then, I missed that. In which case, why in God's name is not withdrawing from Daeren?? I thought it was painfully obvious in my tactics that I did not want to be in melee with anyone ever, and hes pretty clearly the worst one since he can grapple!

Still, I would appreciate it if you would edit that out. Its not an improvisation at all, really, its just ignoring a part of my tactics which were no longer relevant. Besides, you improvised Malik pretty heavily - rather than using Hideous Laughter + MMs/Grasps/ranged attacks from Slain (which would probably have caused the match to last long enough for Improved Invis to wear off), he used Phantasmal Killer, which is nowhere in his tactics - and Ceilia not at all.

technicly it's not invalid since king was stil alive at the time but i suppose 0 hp isnt really usefull alive and i can edit that - but you are wrong about malik - his order for offensive spells per tactics were - 2 fireballs, 1 blindness - kill alleis with magic missile wand THEN 1 phantasmal killer on ceilia (that worked) and only then go with hold monster/cdg.

Round 4 on, he will probably buff hit protective aura, so first goal is to soak that up on a worthless save. Once I see any of the 3 the goal will be to get 2 of them in fireball. One must be rook, with his +5 save one firball may bring him down with average damage. if possible get all 3, hopefully the Cleric will be on the Hippogriff. I should auto pass spell craft to see if it hurt the cleric. Next Round hit them with another Fireball. If Rook is still alive and cleric is mounted on him and frist fireball hurt cleric, if not finish Rook with a MM from wand. If fireball didn't bother cleric then she will still have protective aura. So hit her with blindness, I am guessing she will spell immunity fireball and hideous laughter. At this point finish off skeleton with MM wand.
Stay at max range for whatever spell I am using please. Now with allies dead and her on ground, go ahead and use one phantasmal killer to make sure I soak up her protective ward, who know may get lucky and win with that. After that do a hold monster and Slain will charge in and get in range to CDG next round. if greater invis runs out recast it and move away. and then resume plan above. That should cover everything I think. Thanks for the run.

p.s. - what i did with bishop was complete improv since you didnt call for him to get into the obscuring mist which forced malik to spend a few rounds more after the dealy penaty hit to kill him.

Yep, it's there. It just sounds like a way to get extra spells for free. And that is always the argument why we don't allow spells with a duration of several days used as prebuffs.

I'm not complaining, I'm just pointing out something that sounds like a hole in our rules. I haven't realized this before, allthough I have used the spell in question, but I will use this in the future. That's basically 8 SL extra for Jonathon's cohort per cycle since I don't need to prepare those spells.

It's not exactly free, since the cleric can't prepare a new 4th-level spell in its place. You're trading 1 4th-level spell for up to 2 1st-level spells and a 2nd-level spell. I'd typically rather have the one 4th, personally.

Thats what you get for having a low will save. Lots of save-or-dies target that, so it leaves you with an obvious weakness, just as bad as a low AC or low hp. Any character with that problem needs some other way to cover it up - for example, my Featylec is a level 10 with a +3 will save, but as a Shadowdancer he can hide himself from sight, making him impossible to target with most such spells, and as an Elf hes immune to sleep. Another example would be my Archdevil Asran - +3 will save at level 11, but he comes with SR 17 from his Half-Fiend template, and in one more level his will save will receive a huge boost when he starts adding his charisma to it. If you don't cover up a weakness like that, you will lose to those that can exploit it, just like someone with low AC will lose to a power-attacking Orc Barbarian if he can get into melee.

That was the drow poison one, right?

That has to be the most pathetic parody I've seen of D&D, LOL.

@Zevox: Then, how am I suposed to have a high will save with my gnoll, or to 'counter it' ? Crappy racial HD that makes class will save not increase untill 6th level, unless that give him class level like cleric, although it isn't really the best caster-thing you could see, like an orc. And I don't happen to have tons of credits to make exceptional characters either.
Less than 1/3 of the fourth level characters have (or close to) only half the chance to succed on that damned sleep spell (Although I didn't counted the many elves).

But to make fight interesting, fighters (maybe at least half the time) could be thrown agaisnt other fighters. Maybe I'm the exception, but my gnoll still haven't been fighting an other 'fighters', only spellcasters (except for Daren.. but he's basically half fighter/spellcasters) and for my orc, the single opponent that did came close to the fighter type was that formian warrior, the others... spellcasters.
Sure, characters are thrown agaisnt opponent that will actually challenge them, but when the fight is determined with a single dice roll, don't get me wrong, but you've managed to hit the top of useless boreness. If we're to run fight like that, why don't take a paper sheet, draw two stick guy to each side and roll a d20 a couple of times to determine which ones win most of the times ?
Sound fun, no?
lonewolf

07-26-07, 09:36 AM
There are valid counters against sleep:
Casting it takes a full round, so you have the chance to react. If you see them casting a spell that takes more time to cast than a standart action, take a run action away. That way youre gonna be out of his range and cannot affect you. Of course you can also damage him during the casting, forcing him to make a concentration check or loose the spell.
Macbrea

07-26-07, 09:59 AM
Sleep is pretty useless to after a ceritan point. But fighters and rogues in general are going to have a problem always with Will saves. Later you get alot of Will save or die spells. Your going to either want to move into a combo that gives more will saves, increase your cloak to +5, or take iron will. It's a simple fact of D&D. Fighters loose power as they level. It's the reason every book beyond the players handbook that puts out a warrior style class builds them better.
TelinArtho

07-26-07, 10:54 AM
@Korone - after being around here for a while, you might find that the "save or die" spells tend to just be another aspect of the fights here. Hold Person, Sleep, and to a lesser extent Hideous Laughter and Color Spray can all be used to effectively "decide" a fight with one or two rolls.

In the case of characters with severe weaknesses in these areas - particularly will saves - there's only so much you can do to help. Boosting your will save with cloaks of resistance, protection from alignment potions and the like are relatively cheap options. Some more basic defenses against sleep in particular is to have an ally present (either to soak up some of the 4HD maximum of the spell or to simply wake you up if you are put to sleep) - or use ready actions to hopefully hit them and break their concentration during the casting. Sleep is of course a full round spell with a somewhat limited range and small area of effect - so moving outside of that range is not out of the question in some cases as well.

In a 4-person FFA though, you simply have to expect to be hit with a save or die. It is the fastest and most efficient way to remove someone else from the running - and that is tantamount in a FFA.

On the other side of the equation, many spellcasters would be in a world of hurt without save-or-die spells if they faced 25+ hp warriors each week.
TelinArtho

07-26-07, 12:50 PM
I truly appologize for taking so long with the FFA guys. At this point it really is a matter of outlasting one or more buffs, one or more wands, or a lucky hit or 20.

Kathren is "safe" from Phacce for another 30 rounds due to her shield spell. She only has ~15 charges left on her wand of Magic Missile though.

Phacce has a wand of CLW which he intends on using with impunity. It has ~40 charges left. He also has a wand of Magic Missiles, but he is intent on taking Kathren down first, but he only has the wand as an option right now. Meaning his activities are limited for the next 30 rounds...

Daren also has a wand of CLW, but it doesn't really matter because no one considers him a threat to deal with (other than to avoid melee with at all cost). His only method of attack is his crossbow which needs natural 20s to hit Kathren and a 19 or 20 to hit Phacce.

With decent movement in each and every round (no one wants to be in sight of anyone at any given moment), it means that each round takes a while to run.
Zevox

07-26-07, 01:48 PM
Damn, if I'd known that fight was going to last so long, I'd have authorized using Kathren's scroll of shield if her memorized one wears off...

But do note that Kathren has those scrolls of sleep and color spray she can use, and I did ask to use them on Phacce if all else fails in my tactics.

Zevox
TelinArtho

07-26-07, 01:52 PM
While an admirable option - with Phacce and Kathren avoiding prolonged sight of each other - casting color spray is not an option (you just won't be in range) and sleep is iffy at best (since Phacce will easily be out of sight and out of targetting range in most cases).
Zevox

07-26-07, 02:25 PM
Actually Telin, I just noticed something about Phacce thats pretty important... and which you probably won't like...

His animal companion seems to be self-trained, but thats impossible. His handle animal modifier is only +9 (the +11 is an error on his sheet), which is too low to train an animal himself. Which means he would not have the combat riding package, which means riding him would be all but impossible (he'd need to make unruly mount cheks as a move action every round, and at a -5 ride for riding bareback, and if he fails he can't do anything else that round).

I'll add that to the violations I have on him in the prison... but, well, something is going to need to be done about it for the fight, too...

Zevox
TelinArtho

07-26-07, 02:29 PM
Well - assuming he has the money to cover it - I'm not going to change the fight for something like that (though he'll have to pay for it for sure).
