Fights of the Week: June 13th

Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM MindwandererB will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Link to pairings.
Make sure that your character is not in prison.

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help.
You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
If you need a quick and dirty tool to calculate distances between two points (in 2-D or 3-D), this tool used to suffice until it got taken down without giving us proper notification... the Nerve
Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Recent News and Developments
The Iron Man tournament is complete.
Congratulations to the finalists:
1st Place: SauroGrenom, Raskos the Jade Father (Phrenic Gray Elf Wizard 3/Kineticist 3/Cerebremancer 2)
2nd Place: MindWandererB, Besthirah Lafali (Wood Elf Werebat (Natural) Monk 3)
3rd Place: Erithmu and MindWandererB, The Arcane Hand - Owen Ir'Tolden (Human Abjurer 5/Red Wizard 3) and Silis Lueria (Gray Elf Rogue 3/Diviner 5)
4th Place: MindWandererB, Aerryl Nalladar (Sylvan Elf Druid 10)

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

So, whos activating up there? I wanna know who Asran has to beat to become our first ECL 11 character. :plotting:

My ECL10s will be a few weeks probably. Sir Valkin is in week 2 and hasn't spent 12k of his money...

Kraegin I could activate now - but I wanted to give it a week so I could decide what to do about his LPA...

Gaston will be active in the next few weeks. I have to fix his skills since I somehow screwed that up when he leveled, and like Telin, has cash to burn.

I'm turning Aerryl on, irony of ironies. She's broke anyway, and doesn't need updating at the moment. That may change depending on revisions of the ally rules--I could probably come up with a much nastier ally for her than a spider eater, if I worked the system hard enough, but I need for the rules to be finalized before it's worth bothering.

I'm activating Raskos and Kracknol. Raskos is in week 2, so I want to get him out of the 3FC for guild questing (Always was a questing character anyway). Kracknol will probably loose his griffon ally after we decide on the changes for ally rules.

Not necessarily - I just thought you were talking about a fight, since you the reply was to my question of who was active in those leagues this week. Though I suppose such a fight might be interesting. Though I think it'd be more interesting at ECL 12 or 13, when Asran gets his main Blackguard abilities (Dark Blessing and Divine Might).

Well the good news is that there are no held over fights from last week, which is probably a good thing considering the extra weight the higher level leagues are going to use up.

*shrugs* Well, as they level up, her Polymorph spells get more potent for both of them, not just her. Plus the kind of damage Asran will do when he has divine might is nothing to scoff at - he'll have 9 uses per cycle where he adds +6 to the damage of every attack in a round. Given his natural weapons, fast-growing bab, and a casting of Haste from Senorda, a full attack with divine might from him could be really, really painful.

I was about to say....Cupid De Locke (McJarvis) : FULL ACTIVITY: Jun 6th, Craft Magical Arms and Armor - see sheet

Tessero Valis (TheMagister) : Ready for Jun 13th (fight 1); Free Activity (guarding)I nearly paired Tessero all by himself!

Also: I've updated the roster with the readied characters, and I see a whole lot of them. For pitlords, we only have 12 fights covered + 3 offers + 1 <max>. I think we're going to need some volunteers if we want to avoid an SoE on our first thawed week.

I'll take two fights-> and volunteer for them to be two monsters, as well. A third if you honestly don't get any more volunteers...though I would really prefer to stay at just 2.

Man, glad I didn't activate all my characters this week. [the thought crossed my mind]

There are a total of 28 fights in need of pitlords/miniquestlords, including a couple of multiplayer fights (which I prefer to count as 2 for the purpose of requests, but I can't this week). Counting all volunteers and offers, only 20 fights/miniquests are covered.

I'll wait a little longer to see if I can get some more volunteers, either to pitlord a fight or to withdraw their characters. If I can't achieve parity somehow, I'm going to have to declare an SoE.
Zevox

06-13-07, 04:35 PM
*Looks over his active characters* Two full activities, no pitlord drain there... two Guild activities, couldn't pull those out if I wanted... and Asran, no way I'm deactivating him when I've been waiting so long for a chance to level him again.

Guess its a good thing I'm already running max fights then. :(

<whistles> All right, that'll do it, albeit barely. Pairings up in a few minutes; I advise everyone to take a close look at their fights to make sure it's something you can handle. If not, there may be some trading involved.

MindWandererB

06-13-07, 05:07 PM
All right, I think that covers it; pairings are done. Please take a look and make sure it's all correct and managable.

@Sauro and Mitza: Thanks for your offers, but I was already done at that point. You can be floaters for pickups; I have a feeling we'll need them. Or you can lighten someone's load on a voluntary basis.

I'm changing the credit reporting format: this is the way I keep it for my own records, and shows the breakdown. Don't know why I wasn't doing it this way all along, except that I was doing it the way Cat used to.

When someone is on an assault operation against a para-military group, does that pit them against an operative of that group at their ECL? Or is it just any kind of MQ?

Woooaahh.... Hold up a minute.

I'm looking at my opponents here, and there appears to be some kind of misunderstanding.

I was under the impression that characters coming out of the IMT were at whatever point in the 3FC they were at in the end of the IMT. So I have Raskos on Fight 3, and Kracknol on Fight 2 of their respective 3FC. I see that both Aerryl and Asran are at the top of their 3FC in Fight 1. This isn't so much of a problem for Kracknol since he's a warrior type, but for Raskos I was just going to fight 1 round to get out of the 3FC and become available for guild quests, also he has some gold to spend and I wasn't aware I had a chance to spend it.

Now that I think about it I suppose it's not too bad, but I was surprised to see Aerryl with her full compliment of memorized spells.

Character Reset
All characters participating will be reset to Week 1, no matter in which week they're now. Equal chances to everyone. Once the tournament is over, all characters will continue normally in which week they were in when the higher leagues unfreeze. There it is. Edit: Actually, that's a bit more vague than I realized. What Cat meant was that they'd resume the cycle they were in when they began the tournament.

Um, MWB, why am I paying for a fourth week of a quest? The QL has my tactics for fight three...I wasn't aware that the QL being late cost me another credit...
SauroGrenom

06-13-07, 05:31 PM
There it is.

Looks to me that when you enter the tournament everyone resets to week 1. Then when you leave the tournament, you simply are frozen at whatever point in the 3FC. Then when the league unfreezes, you re-enter the 3FC at whatever point you were at.

So you start the tournament at week 1, loose in the 2nd battle, and are frozen in week 3. Then you re-enter the normal arena 3FC in week 3 when the league is unfrozen.
MindWandererB

06-13-07, 05:32 PM
Um, MWB, why am I paying for a fourth week of a quest? The QL has my tactics for fight three...I wasn't aware that the QL being late cost me another credit...
That would be here:Late Quests: A Quest must be done in three weeks, ie all three encounters must be finished. If that is not the case, a Quest is late and will be extended at a credit cost for both Questlord and Players. The 4th week, a negative penality of 1° will be assigned, another 2° in the 5th week, and if it goes into week 6, everyone gets 3° deducted. After that the Quest will be removed from the roster and is considered abandoned. Please note that the status of the Quest solely depends on what is written in the Questlog, so if the Quest is done but the Questlog not updated, negative penalties apply still.

Yeah, I see where you get that. Cat explained it in more detail in some thread or another, probably the IMT Gossip thread. It really doesn't matter much, either way, but the intent was that characters wouldn't gain any benefit from "getting out of" the cycle they were in when the IMT started. I'm okay with allowing it whichever way you interpreted it. In fact, now that it think of it, Cat's original idea was kind of silly--if you bought stuff in preparation for IMT, it means you'd be resuming a cycle having renewed resources in the middle.

If it wasn't a guild quest, the questlord should have PMed Pitlords with the details (EL and objective). So I have no idea what you wanted here.

Unfortunate that it's a rematch. Ninja is the only PC to ever defeat Tyden Rayn, and I suspect it won't be so easy to take him down this time.

Therefore, I'll have tactics out tomorrow. I need to think on this one.

Odd.. I noticed Malither76 tactics might break down on the simple statement that I don't charge but move to combat. His readied action won't activate and once I move into the 20ft reach he cannot lions charge. Odd, guess it just a straight up swinging at me on his turn type fight.

Granted he quickly out melees Frost. But wasn't anything I could do about that in the sewers.

I hope someone will run a high EL campaign b/c I love the RP with him, check out KU onld campaign A New Threat for a good story, It was really cool doing a diving charge on a beholder we came up against and doing over 100 damage in a round.

Speaking of Campaign I think im going to run one soon maybe start up in about 4 weeks or so if I can get everything together I was thinking EL 8 or 9 with 5 or 6 characters I haven't came up with the alignment yet but if interested please go ahead and shoot me a PM it will be easier to work things out if I can for up a party. from doing a mounted char- i think more and more it pays to have a small size char for a mounted/spirited charge char even with slightly lower dmg since the ability to have medium sized mounts means you can charge a lot more easly and the speed disadvatage can be compensated.

Pah, if you're depending on mounted charges, you're just asking to get screwed, no matter what your size. The plains aside, its really easy to avoid those on our maps. Thats why my mounted characters are all casters to some degree or another, and the one with Spirited Charge just uses it as an option, she doesn't let herself get dependent on it.

Anyway, I've recieved tactics for Psellus vs Namara, plus tactics from Maya, Lorian, and Kervan. I'll run the former tomorrow, and the others over the weekend when I have the rest of the tactics.

@templer10 - thanks for the run. There's a couple of things in there that I flat out don't understand.

1. My tactics called for a ready to cast Wind Wall on hearing an attack. This is a valid tactic - so there should be a listen check (minus distance) vs DC0 to cast Wind Wall before he hits me.

2. In round 11, you have Ialgo go in a direction to "look for Psyker" that Psyker could not have possibly gone. That doesn't make any sense to me. If Ialgo moves 15ft eastward, he auto-spots Psyker, but failing that - north or even south makes more sense that west (away from the last know location of Psyker...). Since Ialgo just came from the North, that pretty much leaves further south and east as options.

No need to edit the fight unless my opponent thinks it is necessary. If the edit does go in - I would appreciate a new roll on the "random direction" to exclude west since it makes no sense.

can you even do a ready action to 2 diffrent things? (i.e. - being attacked and hearing an attack?) and unless i dont understand it - even with ready action attack on HEARING an attack - you hear it after the attack happened - so can you cast the spell before the arrow hits you?

i know in home game i would say you CANT since the attack already happened but iam not sure how it goes stricly by RAW.

note it's not exacly the sme as the do X if other guy is spellcasting - since on the ready for spellcasting you intterup in the middle of the spellcasting - here you asked to cast teh wind wall AFTER the attack is made (or there wouldnt be a listen check) - and still have the spell work BEFORE the attack hits.

it just doesnt make sense to me you can mouth of a spell in the 0.1 secs or something the arrow needs to travel to hit you.

EDIT - you might be right on the 11;th round thing - ill check it more if khaim wants me 2.
TelinArtho

06-15-07, 10:50 AM
The ready has only one action - the finishing of the casting of the spell. This is why you are able to interrupt a standard action casting time spell with another standard action casting time spell.

The ready action is triggered by a concrete thing - the hearing of an attack being made. In the CoCo - that attack is DC0 to hear.

I kind of do, yes. I said "snipe" fairly explicitly, and yet twice in that battle I broke cover to take a standard action shot. I'm in no hurry. Plus, there was no reason to waste shots into his Wind Wall for three rounds; I have 14 Int, not 6. Maybe the first round I didn't know it was there or something, but after that it should be pretty clear I can't hit him.

I'm perfectly find with allowing him to use the readied Wind Wall to interrupt my attack if I'm allowed to not try to attack him through it. It may be invisible, but its effects sure aren't (and even a "miss" still passes through his square on anything but a natural 1).

@Korone - also - missed ammunition has a 50% chance of being recovered. Some pitlords roll this, while others just take 50% of the missed shots and return it after the fight. Rather than have both of us use all of our ammo - can you please give us some of those back?

I kind of do, yes. I said "snipe" fairly explicitly, and yet twice in that battle I broke cover to take a standard action shot. I'm in no hurry. Plus, there was no reason to waste shots into his Wind Wall for three rounds; I have 14 Int, not 6. Maybe the first round I didn't know it was there or something, but after that it should be pretty clear I can't hit him.

I'm perfectly find with allowing him to use the readied Wind Wall to interrupt my attack if I'm allowed to not try to attack him through it. It may be invisible, but its effects sure aren't (and even a "miss" still passes through his square on anything but a natural 1).

about wind wall - sorry you dont have a single point in spellcraft so you cant identify - as far as you know it could just be regular misses - if you had some more shots that were supposed to hit i would have dont int checks but out of 3 rounds only in 1 round you SHOULD have hit.

what you SHOULD have done is sy in the tactics - IF for some odd reason i should be hitting the target but isnt do X - since you didnt mention it iam not going to make it easy for you and negate's telin's tactics after just 1 round.

About breaking cover - at the first shot - ialgo was heading in your way and was going to autospot you in at most 2 rounds So i attacking from there near somewhere you can quickly run and hide behind was the best option. (which you did later)

about the second shot - i had you shoot since by the time you actually spotted ialgo you barely had any cover left - it's extremly likely you would have been autospotted next round ANYWAY and as far as you knew - you have already hurt ialgo pretty badly (you didnt see ialgo healing) so you thouth you had a good chance of taking him out then and there.

frankly seeing as the dice gods were CLEARLY in telin's favor and he basicly hit every single shot- all the edits in the world wont help you since he shot what he shot and did the dmg he did - and dont forget any edit will negate that first hit on ialgo which means he saves his CLW for later, sorry i just dont see the point of an edit when the is a CLEAR winner - at best an edit will make it last a little longer.

@ TM/'Rith - Just looked over Hood's MQ, and I think you guys are forgetting something. Manyshot can only be used on targets within 30'. Looks to me like several of Hood's were invalid, and so should've been single-shots. Not sure if it matters or not, but maybe the extra attack will cause one of those shots to hit.

So, what do we have a 1/3 rule on again? Wands too? Brooches of shielding?

And these things can of course 'saved' and go nova in the last fight, yes?

Frankly, I can understand the spell restriction, even if I don't agree. To put in an item and abilities restriction too is idiotic, as far as I'm concerned. The 3FC already takes care of that. Are we afraid people will go nova with limited day abilities?

Secondly, no problems with the fight. And I love it when the dice actually don't derail the plan. :)

Edit: Actually, there is one error in the wrap up.

Valen spent 6pp buffing, 10pp on two Hustles, and what looks to be 10pp on Deepcrystal attacks for a total of 26pp, not 21pp.

Interestingly, only x/day use abilities and x/day use magic items are hit this way. Charged items such as wands are not, nor are passive items such as Brooches of shielding. Its under Rules of Gladius: Battles of Gladius II. Not saying its the best way of doing things, but it should clarify what it is affected currently by the 3FC.

Edit: Its actually kinda unfortunate for straight paladins, with x/day smite evil. Considering the odds that they'll see more than 1 evil opponent in a 3FC aren't good. Not that we see many straight paladin around here...

So 3 for AA-Str, 3 for AA-Dex, 5 for 1st Hustle, 5 for 2nd Hustle, 2 for Deepcrystal, 6 for Dispel, 2 for deepcrystal, and then 6 for deepcrystal.

Total of 32. Out of a possible 34. Amazing how many pp you can burn in just 4 turns. :)

So with his latest fight, Tyden Rayn also levels to 5. I pity the next PC he gets paired against....23 pp to use with Wild Surge (instead of the normal 12), which means he can pop off three 5 pp Wild Surged Dissipating Touches or Crystal Shards, doing 7d6 damage each, and still have enough left over for a couple of Vigors.

Of course, having said this, someone will probably rip his arms off and beat him with them in his next match....

Thanks for the pickup and the run. Nothing jumping out at me as incorrect, but I'll wait until TA has a chance to look it over.

By my count, Taren has 3 hits and 9 14 misses (realized I forgot the batch rolling there at the end) that need 50/50 rolls. If you could correct that, that would be super.

Well I did find something...

just not enough to make a difference.

Vallgar actually has a second casting of Chill Touch to cast before he needs to recall one. Which means Vallgar gets one more touch on it - but it ultimately won't be enough.

To answer specific questions:

Why a potion of Mage Armor? Prohibited school = Conjuration.

Why not False Life? Because he had other spells that were more important to pick up and I didn't have the money last time to pick it up. With my expanded cap for ECL4, I should be able to manage it I think.

Good run.

Kathren Durrol intercepts Free Thinkers Operative is up.
Well, the rewards at least are way, way off. This was an ECL 3 fight, not ECL 1 - loser rewards are 300 xp/gp.

I realize that everything in the fight is legal, but I've got to express some serious misgivings about it. This defeat really mainly came about because I had no foreknowledge of my opponent whatsoever to write tactics against, but he was allowed to write tactics against me with full knowledge of my abilities and what he would have to counter. Worse, and though I don't mean this as an attack on Salrantol, I have to admit I get the general feeling that he was designed to counter Kathren specifically - the feat selection and spell selection he had really pigeonholes him as a fortitude save-or-die caster dependant on Ghoul Touch, which would be a bad thing in the arena as a whole but which Kathren is fairly weak against at her present level, particularly with the Spectral Hand scrolls to let him overcome her speed advantage on Starlight. It just doesn't feel like this was a fair fight at all.

To say the least, I'm going to recommend some changes to our rules about PMG attack interceptions. Thanks for running the fight anyway Salrantol, and please don't take the above the wrong way. That whole thing has just left a very, very bad taste in my mouth.

Actually, just noticed something two potentially major things illegal on the NPC. It was made with 36 point buy, but should have been with 25 point buy. And it has PC wealth, but should've had NPC wealth (2,500 gp). Those are basic NPC creation rules here. Not sure if they'll effect the fight - the latter could really just mean his wand gets downgraded - but it should be looked into.

What can I say. If a Pitlord is lenient with writing tactics, you might make it against an NPC caster. If the Pitlord is strict and writes tactics like he were a player, your odds will generally be low, even against 25pt buy.

Kitaya would probably have won her last monster fight with full foreknowledge of the monster's his abilities (and by holding him to the 1/3rd rule). Without foreknowledge (and the opponent with foreknowledge) it becomes a whole different type of arena fight.

This addresses the following, too, somewhat--I ran it like a monster fight. I fleshed out the character, including purchases, and then looked at the opponent, wrote tactics, and ran the fight with those tactics.
Aye, I figured. The issue is though that in monster fights at least you have the chance to guess your foe and look up its statistics in the MM/SRD, thereby giving you a shot at planning for its tricks. With this interception, I had no such chance - essentially, I had to make assumptions about what to expect from a typical wizard, then write tactics against the entire first and second level wizard spell lists. That widens the tactical gap significantly.

For instance, I assumed that my foe would have a decent or possibly even high will save because he was a wizard, but as it turns out because you didn't put any points in wisdom he had a measely +2. With just that knowledge, I'd have shifted my tactics to Color Spray rather than Sleep, and this would have been a whole different fight.

I had never looked at Kathren's character sheet before creating the opponent. I actually just modeled the character off of a wizard character I remembered seeing about a year ago.
I figured that as well, but it still doesn't change the fact that it feels like he was made to take advantage of Kathren's weaknesses. I don't know, maybe its just the disappointment at failing TAO and being stuck in the ECL 3 league for another week when I thought this would be a good way to both help the Guild and get Kathren to finally level up talking.

*whistles* Wasn't quite expecting a blitz like that. Good thing the rolls went my way.

I do have two errors to point out (not fight-affecting) and one question, though. The first error is that the concentration check to manifest while grappled is DC 20 + power level, not DC 20 period, as your notes indicate. The second is that Asran's full attack on Yaurl should have had 3 axe attacks - two for his +6 bab, and another for the haste Senorda cast. The question is - what are the percent notations you have in there whenever Asran's crew strikes? I noticed you have separate rolls for the chance to hit the tentacles instead of Raskos, so they're not that, and I don't think theres any concealment in that fight, so what are they?

Edit: Oh, you forgot the MM charge Senorda used vs Yaurl in the wrap-up.

The concentration in the grapple in the Psionic skills SRD mentions DC20 (flat), but it certainly should be DC20+PL... hmm. I should check an errata on that.

For Asran - I believe he does have 3 attacks at the with the axe once haste goes up. Round 2 (no haste) - 2 attacks with the axe; Round 3 (w/haste) - 3 attacks with the axe - and then Yaurl was down anyway.

The concealment is from the webs. With 20ft of webs between them originally - they were concealed from each other completely. Once it was down to 15ft of webs (when the readied action round kicks off (round 5)), everyone is shooting at concealment (20% miss chance)... EDIT - CRAP. Its cover not concealment... That does change a few things - let me see what it does...

I'll edit in the wand charge once I'm done checking this other error...

I suspect it's because you have the same curse I do... the dice only favor you when you're DMing.

But a more serious answer - I've noticed the higher the league, the more dependent on allies the characters are. Additionally, most of your characters tend to be more intricate creations - a "what could I do with this prestige class" rather than based solely on trying to win. And please don't take that as a negative in any way - I find your characters quite interesting, even playable in a tabletop environment.

I try to make all of my characters as ones I would enjoy playing in a tabletop environment or as running as an NPC in a tabletop environment (for instance Kraegin, Vallgar, Zax would all be "bad guys" in my campaigns since I have never run an evil campaign). Darrgon, Daeren, Sir Valkin are all remakes of characters I played at one time or another in a table top game as well.

For the concentration checks, MWB got it already.

For the axes, it was my error. I just realized, looking over it again, I misinterpretted you mentioning he had 2 hits with his axe in round 3 as being that he had only 2 attacks with it.

For the concealment, shouldn't those webs just burn away from Asran's axe and Arynat's fire flask? And if not, wouldn't it have just been prudent to move so they weren't in the way or finish them with the axe?

Well on the last matter - that's something that's never really been resolved - do the webs continue to burn on their own or do they need one move/standard action to burn away each 5ft square?

I generally run it as one attack action (so with a +6 BAB, you get 2/round (a third with haste) and it doesn't spread from there. As to what is prudent about it - it seemed more important to continue to attack Raskos than to spend several rounds burning away the intervening webs.

I've posted the setup and the first 13 rounds of Mohmat vs. Liara here.

As you can tell, it's a loooong, slow fight. So much so that I don't think I have the ability to finish it. Not complex or anything, aside from all the refocusing and ride checks every round. It's mainly that neither of them have decent attack bonuses, but both have good ACs and a lot of HP due to Vigor. Combining those factors, and each round takes me several minutes to figure out, even speed-rolling.

If someone can please pick this one up, go right ahead.

Cannot argue with those dice rolls. A bit higher Concentration Check, and everything would have been totally different. Also if that Mind Thrust had been 50hp instead of 48, Asran could have died from massive damage.

There are a couple strange things though. Infact as I think over it, they could be fight changing.

In round 2 Yaurl performs what is definitely the most stupid possible maneuver to get into melee with Senorda. There is only one possible approach for Yaurl to get into melee with Senorda that will also allow her to escape in the following round, and this is the one he uses. Yaurl is a flying creature, so he could easily move from (20,11,2) to (23,3,2) and attack Senorda from higher ground and receive a nice cover bonus from the statue against melee attacks from Asran.

More importantly, from above, he would easily be in range for a 5' step to attack Senorda again in round 3 w/o provoking an AoO.

Also every bite attack by Yaurl should result in a free trip attempt (perhaps reducing her AC further for future bite attacks).

Lastly Senorda's HP total doesn't go down in round 4 from Yaurl's bite. It should be 2 HP at that point.

If the cover bonus to AC in round 2 and/or the lack of an AoO in round 3 both carry through, then Yaurl can survive to attack in 5 and potentially slay Senorda before she casts Black Tentacles in round 5.
TelinArtho

06-18-07, 03:09 PM
EDIT: Actually on the matter of "stupid movement" - you get what you get. The movement to that location prevented AoO from Asran when Yaurl was closing, did not give Senorda a cover bonus when Yaurl attacked.

Yaurl could have taken a 5ft step directly over Asran to attack Senorda though - so that will be in there. I'll also add in the trip and check the Hp totals.
TelinArtho

06-18-07, 03:21 PM
Okay - edited it with the trip attempts.

Also - you are correct that I didn't account for the HP lost to Senorda in round 4. Since she didn't suffer any more hits though - it doesn't really matter.

That said - removing the AoO on Yaurl for his movement (cutting out the move action to move and replacing it with a 5ft step) didn't result in a change because I apparently didn't account for the damage he took from it in the first place.

Note that even had I "fixed" the movement - Yaurl's attack still would have missed in round 2 and Asran's axe hit would have also still hit (the claw would have missed - but it didn't beat DR anyway).
SauroGrenom

06-18-07, 03:25 PM
As to the movement choice - you get what you get. I moved Yaurl to that location because it avoided an AoO from Asran that wasn't necessary and gave him the ability to attack.Whoa...

The reasons you give for that movement choice are rather wimpy frankly. There was clearly three locations on the map that put Yaurl in melee with Senorda and w/o granting Asran an AoO (Your stated reason for choosing that movement).

They are at:

(23,2,1) Where you choose to place Yaurl, and that gives cover against Asran, but also allows the 5' step trap used by Asran that prevents Yaurl from following Senorda with a 5' step int he next round.

(23,2,2) Which is a neutral position that doesn't grant cover, but does grant the ability to follow Senorda's retreat.

(23,3,2) Which is the best position because it grants cover against melee from Asran and grants the ability to follow Senorda's retreat in any direction.

You clearly made a sub optimal tactical movement choice. It's impossible to write tactics that detail the ideal tactical movement. That's all highly situational depending on the relative positions of everyone and the initiative order. You used a very savvy tactical movement trap using an obstacle with 5' steps and moving the initiative order to allow Senorda to get away and force Yaurl to take an extra AoO. That savvy tactical movement and initiative shifting isn't in Asran's tactics. I hope that if you are willing to be so savvy in using tactical movement obstacles and initiative order shifting for my foes, you should offer similarly intelligent tactical movement for Yaurl.

My main complaint is with all the font tags made necessary by the sblocks. First off - careful.

(23,2,1) means 5ft off of the ground. Meaning - a medium size creature is one 5ft square up from the ground.

(23,2,2) means 10ft off of the ground. Meaning - a medium size creature without reach cannot even tough something on the ground.

That said - if Yaurl moves to the square just above the medium statue (as in 5ft off of the ground) - he does indeed get cover from Asran. He also suffers cover on Senorda.

The position I moved Yaurl to gives Yaurl cover from Asran to start with and he only loses it when Asran takes a 5ft step to where Senorda was.

I disagree that the position I gave you is any worse than the position you want (for instance, if Senorda doesn't step away and instead uses a touch range spell - then Asran cannot negate the cover with a 5ft step).

Also since Senorda would have cover from Yaurl if Yaurl was in the position you wanted - she could have moved away without an AoO from Yaurl.

I removed some 5000 character by taking out all the size and font tags and putting in a "-Pitlords Trim-" line. Also I don't know why every heading must be both bold and underlined. Well, I can understand both bolding and underlining the headings - its a stylistic thing that makes it clear where they are, and besides, the headings aren't too numerous unless you have a bunch of allies. But I agree with you on the size tags and font tags - way overdone (especially the size ones) and totally pointless.

Personally I've stopped lobbying to change the default sheet. I never use it because it doesn't suit my style of maintaining character sheets. I like that we have one - so there is a "minimum standard" to go with it, and while I would like to have a better standard (as in with fewer special tags), I have other, more pressing, issues to try to push forward (like the 3+ current topics in the Council thread).

Could you use the same energy that you used on the Red Hand's wizard to disable him, Then he can't move and then place the energy walls around him, and then I'll cover the area in a cloud. Quick and efficient. It will be a little matter of if your power will be strong enough to hold him. I could use a few moments to prepare some spells that may allow us to adventure longer."

Naga tactics: Tele Manuever + Stinking cloud + Energy Wall = win?

Then again Istimas +16 vs 21 might be rough, Wish I had Ray of enfeeblement right now ... My EBT could probably hold him at a +20 grap check.

Other thoughts cause that guy is going to be a beast.

Other:
Owen has a 3rd and a 4th slot open. I'm tempted to prep a D. Door just so that I can be a third point of escape. In the 3rd level slot I could do either another stinking cloud (my best method of crowd control vs psionic creatures (I'm not going to prep as many webs on the next rest.)) or a rope trick to allow us to rest underground.

Heh - wrong thread mate...

I am still using modified versions of my own sheet, never was entirely happy with the default sheet. I'm fine with everyone having their own style and preferences, as long as they are easy to use.

Besides, I do see the occasional copy of one of my own character sheets with newer players, so it can't be that bad. ;)

With regard to the default character sheet...

I am wondering which sheet you guys are looking at. The one that is in the prison is the most recent sheet available. If that hasn't been updated to the Rules thread, it needs to be.

The sblocks on that sheet don't have any font tags inside of them. That is why I ask....I'm not real sure where you are seeing that. When Sauro made some of the proposals he mentioned above, that was one of the things that was done was to remove all of the font tags.

The size 1 tags are there at Cat's request. He wanted the grayed info as unobtrusive as possible. I personally like them, but have no problem removing them if that is what everyone wants.

I will also once again state that there is not, nor will there be, a line on the sheet for pitlords to cut sheets. Sheets need to be posted in their entirety. Trimming a sheet should be a rare case, not an all-the-time occurance.

@ MWB: I'll remove the size 1 tags from the sheet in the prison and then drop you a line...you can then copy it to the Rules Thread.

See, this type of trimming is perfectly fine. Things like that don't *have to be there (except the fight histories). Things listed in the Optional Information section can be trimmed when necessary (that's why it is optional). But there should not be mass trimming of any other section unless absolutely necessary. Two small mistakes, one for us, one for them:

r6: Entangling Ectoplasm should provoke, given that order of events. Could just step and then manifest, though.

r7: Grease helps you resist a grapple, not just to escape one. So that's a failed check. Same thing on round 10.

Since the net effect is in our favor, no need to edit for just this.

Reward penalties (and bonuses) are averaged between the members of a team. They get ECL 6 rewards -3.125% for the horse.

As for where I'm going with Maya: Ranger isn't the only way to qualify for Slayer, and I decided it wasn't worth the ML. Offensive Precog. makes up for the loss of BAB (the augmentation is precisely enough to, when fully augmented, give a PsiWar a fighter's attack bonus, and a psion a cleric's). Basically, standard Slayer fare.

Incredibly odd - nowhere else do I see any indication that Escape Artist is used to resist grapple attempts, just to escape a grapple you're already in.

So, you're going to spend your ECL 9 feat on Track? Huh - well, suit yourself I suppose. Not a method I'd take personally, but we'll see if it works out. Though it does give her another parallel to Mithos, since Slayer is basically the Psionic equivalent of Eldritch Knight, which is interesting.

Which is precisely what I meant is odd. Does that spell/power suddenly give you the ability to resist grapple checks with escape artist ones when you normally couldn't? It doesn't mention such. Does this mean that either that text is in error and you can never do that, or that there should be an errata allowing it normally? A bit of a problem this raises if you ask me.

It doesn't say "Escape Artist checks made to resist or escape a grapple," it says "grapple checks made to resist or escape a grapple."

Oh, and regarding Maya: I figure the level of PsiWar got me an extra feat, so I can spend an extra one elsewhere. Loss of one BAB, but a better (IMO) selection of power stone use.

thanks for the run- rewards for lorian are off - he has 25% penalty from super speedy, +23% from political career and + 3.125 (i think) from tessero's horse so it should be +1.125% rewards.

Um, Super Speedy is only a CR 2 animal. For an ECL 6 characters, thats only half of your CA, which means 12.5% penalty. I did miss the political career though, which means you actually get +13.625%. Will edit accordingly.

I think what is happening (since the location coordinates are off) is that Corruptor is within the Bat's blindsense so the Ray is against the dex boosted Touch AC and still misses.

@Malither76: Rewards are also wrong: Corruptor brought allies so +/-8.333% on either side.
@Rauul: You need to list when you use pearls of power in your 3FC in the prebuff section. One of the reasons I thought you had a chance was that I thought you still had 3 pearls of power to unload Magic Missiles into.

Theres no 50% miss chance for Call Lightning, ever. Its an area-of-effect spell - you either choose the correct space to cast it at or you don't.

The only issue might be if, for some reason, you have a 50% chance of guessing the right square. Which is unlikely; usually, you'll have at best 25% chance of guessing right, if you have to guess. Or there's incorporeality. But those aren't the case here.

Any chance someone will else pick it up then? - and btw- i hate saying this but it really shouldn't take that long to run since unless the guys against elrick came up with something truly brilliant they have almost no chance to win (flying druid 2 levels up + allies + unlimited healing + a hell of a lot of firepower Vs at best half casters with no healing - you get the picture).

You're right - its actually easier to trip a flying creature than one on the ground, since quadrupeds lose their +4 bonus to resist tripping when not on the ground. Unless you're flying magically, you're quite vulnerable to tripping while flying, unless you avoid it happening outright.

Getting a dex bonus to resist is quite true, in place of strength if your dex is larger. The other thing you mentioned though is non-core, and quite frankly I'd ignore it if I were running a fight and someone brought it up. Giving bonuses to resist tripping for maneuverability, especially one so large? Come on, thats just idiotic. Which is about par for the course coming from Skip I suppose.

i agree without maps it's near impossable to tell where the charaters are.. honestly with you at a 10ft elevation the dogs are med size and should get a an attack.. But again with out map coordinates I can't argue either way..

(and this is why maps should still give credit or take away credits IMHO)

But either way he didn't have much of a chance... and if the pitlord didn't move an invisible caster who knew he has been pinpointed once... the pitlord shouldn't be running fights with charaters with a 20+ int.. thats just common sense..

Actually this was discussed the last time Bulgar met up against Elrick. While it was a blindside to me before - I think it is reasonable. Something that is a clumsy flyer should be easier to stall (a flying trip) than a Good flyer.

Since it is in the RotG articles - it does fall under the purview of what we use and I see no reason to not use it - barring an elder vote.

Found what you were talking about - All About Movement, Part 5 (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rg/20040706a). Yeah, thats just plain dumb.

Regretfully, we do use the RotG quite often around here, though there hasn't ever been a specific rule about how/when to apply them that I can recall. Some pitlords choose to ignore him, especially when he contradicts core rules (which he does quite often).

...you know, I'm going to head over to the Court and see if I can't get an agreement to just stop using the RotG articles unless they're helpful in making a difficult-to-rule decision. I do like one of his decisions - letting weapons work on a dive - but to get rid of the rest of his idiocy I'd gladly give that up.

Attacks from in water are hindered by -2 per 5ft of water it has to pass through, Water doesn't block line of sight. Attacks from outside of water with ranged attacks are against targets with full cover. Also, all fire spells cannot break the air/water boarder.

I do have a question on warp wood though, Saves for magic items are based off the saves of the wielder. Does Spell resistance apply to the items of a person carrying them?

If it was just a fire-based spell, you would be correct.

However, it includes a very specific clause at the end of the spell's description:

This spell does not function underwater.

That was... creative. If I were either player, I'd be pretty teed off about improvization on that level, especially the fact that Mohmat didn't use up all her PP and actions on Wild Surged Vigors. It's up to Eluria whether to press that point, though.

@Macbrea: I just saw that Kracknol vs. Aerryl is up. There's a problem: You have Kracknol charging through a pillar. Given my insistence on keep-away tactics, it's possible (if somewhat unlikely) that Aerryl's death will not occur until after she can take down Raknital.

Sorry.. I thought I had missed the pillar. But realized when i was staring at it that Ratika is huge.. not large.

NP. The griffon has a huge movement speed compared to the bat anyway. there's no chance for him to evade melee for too long. Even if a charge isn't possible, all it takes is a single attack with that snatch attack. Although, there is the chance that Raknital's reach could come into play as a way to charge and still attack around a pillar.
MindWandererB

06-19-07, 06:17 PM
Although, there is the chance that Raknital's reach could come into play as a way to charge and still attack around a pillar.Wouldn't work--when you charge, it has to be directly towards your target. Ride-By Attack is the only exception.
Macbrea

06-19-07, 06:21 PM
Well. problem is cannot ride away from a creature and buff. Cannot outrun a creature with twice your movement or get hit. Must move at least 20ft or fall 40ft to ground below. Cannot ride for cover and cast spells as per the ride skill description.

I completed the run again. But, I need you to figure out if my choice was the right one. I understand we already knew what the attack was going to be if it went off. There isn't anything I can do to escape a creature that moves twice it's movement.
Eluria

06-19-07, 07:08 PM
If eluria wont argue i wont - a contest between mohmat's vigor and my CLW could have take a looooooong time.

I am certainly not going to contest the fight; I appreciate the incredible amount of work that goes into running them, especially with improvisation. I don't agree with all the improvisation, but it's all believable and well-reasoned out. With regards to using all powerpoints, I think Mohmat may have, since I'm not sure the right number were removed for buffing both the first vigor and force screen.

The one thing I do take issue with is snarky comments like:
The way I figure it, anyone with the ability to keep themselves alive for forever and a day, but neglect to give themselves any way to actually win a fight, deserves a little less attention in their fights.

Many builds here, if not most, focus on applying layers and layers of defensive buffs, and having a way to do damage. Liara obviously has the capability to dish out massive damage, and I'd argue Mohmat does too. 3pp crystal shard + 2 WS + 2 psionic shot is nothing to laugh at for most ECL4 gladiators, and even if that's not possible, longbow + psionic shot every round is not embarassing damage either. Mohmat is going to gain +1 BAB every level from here on; I'd love to hear your opinions and advice for how to improve things, but my main goal here is to have fun. Snide comments, especially from you, who have, in the past, been very supportive and welcoming from new players, are a little ... off-putting.
MitzaVolchenko

06-19-07, 07:15 PM
@Eluria and templer10 Thanks!

I do sympathize with MWB's sentiment, however it is along the same issue as we hit with hide and seekers. Personal preferences are the bottom line on that one.

I have no issue with roll for 20's folks, but I do have issue with roll for 20's when one also has to play the regain focus game...lot of rolls, lot of tracking.
MindWandererB

06-19-07, 07:23 PM
@Eluria: Sorry about that. My home life is a little chaotic right now, so I'm a tad cranky. I'm sorry for taking it out on you.

The problem with Mohmat, as I learned with Sunstroke, and is the same problem with Izumi and a few others, is that a fat amount of damage doesn't mean anything if you can't dish it out consistently. If you save your PP for Vigor, you're not using it to deal damage, so unless you have a way to boost your attack bonus somehow, the bow isn't going to be that effective. Vigor may be a darn efficient power, especially with wild surge, but when it's just about the only power you use, it leads to long and frustrating fights.

06-20-07, 09:56 AM
I posted the edit. I talked to MWB on IM for a few minutes. But, I haven't seen if he has looked over the fight. As far as I could tell there was nothing I could do to prevent the attack from occuring based off his tactics. It was going to either happen as a result of an AoO or immediately next turn on your action. His tactics suggested I run away. But only had half the movement. They also suggested I cast certian buffs and blast at you. Both of those would result in the same effect.

Final cost was 1 more pp because you couldn't attack and therefor buffed on the way as per your tactics.

Wow, passed sleep twice with a will save of +1 ?

A spell focus/greater spell focused sleep no less! I don't know what it is... my wizards can't catch a break. I think Vantis will take this week off.

@Malither - Darrgon's summons are augmented. This means the fire beetles' attacks should be +3 to hit, 2d4+3 damage. In the roller - the attack bonus is correct, but the damage doesn't reflect the +3 to each hit.

EDIT - Also - they should be summoned in a flanking position on Yakov to improve everyone's chances to hit.

Edit Again - looks like you did get the flanking but missed that they are augmented.

Tellin your right missed the augment completely, you won and no extra resourses were used if its cool with you guys I will leave it as is, looks more dramatic that way with him knocking you to 0 with the last swing. but yeah with that you would have won a few round earlier I believe.

OK MWB things are clearing up for me know, I'm going to edit my guys, probably grab a nap, but we will get caught up and have some good RP when you meet your priestess.

@Usernamer and Aura_Blade -- you have my apologies for disappearing on you like I did; I got sick on Monday and spent a couple days hugging my toilet.

You have the dubious honor of being my first fight EVER to be held over.

I'll get it done this weekend, you have my word (again).

Thanks for understanding!

No problem. There's a couple of other minor things I would point out to remain completely disclosing. Nothing that actually changes enough in my opponent's favor though when you account for the extra damage from all of the hits.

1. Summoning takes a full round action.
2. Darrgon's tactics called for casting SMI twice, then recalling and recasting. I am fine with leaving it as casting it once, recalling it and recasting it though. Recalling a spell does take a standard action though - so if an edit goes in - it should probably be removed.
3. Darrgon's tactics call for Shakti to attach. This means that on the first successful bite, Shakti deals automatic bite damage until removed.

Macbrea, Did the Kracknol vs Aerryl fight get finished? Has MWB signed off on it?
Yeah, I'm cool with it. I needed more time than I had.

@Macbrea: it's really, really helpful if you post fight completion notices here. I know you're not obligated to, but it makes sure we can comment on it promptly, and especially to be aware of any edits.

Yeah, I know, which is why I caught it, but clearly Sauro didn't. And if you'd posted here, I'd have replied here.

NP. Just a suggestion for the future. Cat never posted his completed fights here, and if you can't follow his examples, whose can you?

@Zevox:
Re: TBD vs. Maya and Lorian -

You wanna know something really funny? We both forgot to mention and take into account Tessero's shiny new Adamantine Heavy Armor. He's still got 12 hp left! :)

I'm still glad I didn't have us spend a lot of resources on that battle (4 charges of resist energy times all three allies); we got quite enough xp/gp for a loss as it stands. ;)

Phacce vs. Gash is completed here.

Let me reiterate my apologies to Usernamer and Aura_Blade for the holdover. I know I hate it when it happens to me. ;)

I'm available for edits until Sunday afternoon.
