Fights of the Week: June 28th

Sheets
Deadline for editing characters sheets is 21:00 CET. By my estimate - that leaves you with about 2 hours by my clock - so finish up your editing.
Central European Time (http://wwp.centraleuropeantime.eu/) shows the time.
Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions.
Please do not make fake accounts. If you do, there will be pain for all of your multiple personalities, plus bannings and feeding to dragons. Oh and curses - lots and lots of curses.

Pairings
GM Caterane will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Make sure that your character is not in Prison (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=571107&goto=lastpost).

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need, there is a nice Template ready to use that will help.
You could find very useful the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps, You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
Other useful links are Skills and Feats, Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, don't attack pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play and above all, have FUN!

Request from the GM

In an effort to aid Pitlords and pitlords without the 3.5 DMG, we are looking for someone to create the EL1-12 encounter tables for monster fights. The work is worth 2 credits. An additional credit can be earned by the same or another player by providing EL13+ tables.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE NOW IN EFFECT

You level up even during the 3-Fight-Cycle (Rules: Battles I) provided you have enough XP of course.

Pitlords have to use Usurpator's XP:GP table to determine gold rewards. All references to the old table have been deleted from the rules. (Rules: Pitlords)

This also affects losing XP. Involuntary XP loss (eg familiar death) and XP loss through crafting disappears from the CoCo. The alternative is the Virtual XP idea and we agreed that this is too much of a hassle. Characters who crafted or lost XP until Jun 28 do not have to re-add them retroactively. XP loss by casting spells with an XP Cost also cost an equal amount of gold which is directly taken from Usurpator's XP:GP table.

Pitlords should use the Standard Fight Summary. Pitlords who run PCs in Fight 2 have to include the summary from Fight 1 (Fight 1 PCs don't have a previous summary and Fight 3 PCs have completed the cycle anyway). (Rules: Pitlords)

Miniquests count for 2 activations per character from this week on! (Rules: Quests)

Miniquests to enter a guild do not count against your maximum allowed MQ slots (1/level).

Planar Allies: If you pass the 'helpful' diplomacy Dc by X or more, the planar ally fights for free. X is the number of HD of the called ally. (Rules: Allies I). Planar Allies with an 'Always' alignment listed always have that alignment. If only one part is listed as 'Always' (eg. always good) then the other component is free to pick by the player. If the planar ally has a 'Usually' alignment listed, it can be anything within one step (eg. usually CE can also be NE or CN).

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

There are quite some new rules going into effect this week. Please read them all. Here's a summary:
You level up even during the 3-Fight-Cycle (Rules: Battles I) provided you have enough XP of course.

Announcement: Expect the Handle Animal system also being converted to Sauro's approach. I hope to get it done this week.

Advanced Planar Allies might be allowed with the appropriate knowledge and if the player provides the stats in his tactics or on his sheet. We have to talk about that further.

@Setzertrancer - tactics for Faelto have been sent

@Zevos - tactics for Sir Valkin and Blaergh have been sent.

@MWB - that dragon has now officially been dubbed: Zero the Annoying Snake :)

That's only slightly better than Foreman, the real Paladin and Maven the Plentiful...

Good luck to everyone this week.

@King Uther - let me know what Gaston (who has a variety of knowledge skills) knows about the monster and I'll send tactics.

@ Telin - Tactics recieved, thanks.

@ Dr. Funk - Vivi's tactics recieved, problems PMed.

Hmm... so I get to fight two of NiQil's Horsemen this week, eh? Well, heres hoping the dice favor Eraca more this week, and that they don't abandon Destra.

And ow, is Asran going to need a lot of luck this week. The worst possible map for him, and one of the best for his opponent (well, while she still has Freedom of Movement available anyway). And of course Aerryl is on fight 3 and still has most of her spells left after two straight weeks of monster fights...

@ My Pitlords - Most-if-not-all of my tactics will be away tonight.

@ My players - My time for pitlording is rather limited this week. I have Friday free, but tomorrow I have work in the afternoon and evening, and Saturday I'll be at a DDM tournament most of the day (War of the Dragon Queen prerelease). Tuesday being the Fourth of July I'll be at a party much of the day, and I don't know if I'll have work Sunday or Monday yet, but its possible. So please, please try to tactics to me in the next two days so I can get two of my fights out of the way Friday and late Saturday.

@ Zevox: Before you do your tactics vs Pestilence, I should mention that since his last fight was posted so close to deadline, it is not linked as I had no time to update it in before pairings. Also, he has 2 less arrows and 2 less wands charges than are listed on his sheet. Probably won't make a difference, but figured I should mention it.
TelinArtho

06-29-06, 12:31 AM
@Niqil - about that violation you just posted... I didn't think that single-use items that weren't based on spells really counted for the expendable cap. I admit - I wasn't here when that change was put into effect - but it seems to me to be outside of that ruling.

Not that I'd be upset to see the whip tokens go by the wayside...

Not that I'd be upset to see the whip tokens go by the wayside...

Here is the relevant ruling, with the pertinent section bolded:

Q: Are there limits on what expendable items can be purchased?
A: Yes. You may only own an amount of expendables (which are defined as oils/potions, tattoos, scrolls and powerstones) up to your ECL 2 x 50 gp. All single use expendable items, including (but not limited to) scrolls, potions, powerstones, tattoos and wondrous items, are limited to a caster/power level equal to your ECL. Scrolls and powerstones are further limited to your CL/ML + 2. Charged items, including (but not limited to) wands, dorjes, staffs, psicrowns and wondrous items are also limited to being purchased up to your ECL in caster/power level. Items with both charges or limited uses as well as a function that is continuous or does not elapse after a certain number of uses may still be purchased at any ECL (an example of this would be a Gem of Brightness, which has both effects that are charge-dependant, and effects that are not).

This is part of the ruling that was in place before the ECL2 x 50 cap was introduced, but it did not change at all when the cap was put into place. It was specifically designed to prevent things like the feather token whip from being used at low level simply because it is cheap. It is a very powerful weapon at low levels, which is part of the reason this rule was put into place. That, and for wands and dorjes above your ECL are also limited...at the time there was a character (I forget who's or what the name was) that was ECL 5 toting around a high level magic missile wand that was just obliterating everyone. I want to say it belonged to Macbrea, but I could be mistaken. So the ECL limit on charged and single use items was introduced as a result to prevent that type of imbalance.

Glad I asked then...

So "charged" means something that has a limited number of charges overall - not something that has charges per day right? (So a rod of extend is still valid, but an elemental gem or a ring of the ram might not be)

Glad I asked then...

Correct. My example is the Gem of Brightness.

Gem of Brightness: This crystal appears to be a long, rough prism. Upon utterance of a command word, the crystal emits bright light of one of three sorts.
• One command word causes the gem to shed light as a hooded lantern. This use of the gem does not expend any charges.
• Another command word causes the gem of brightness to send out a bright ray 1 foot in diameter and 50 feet long. This strikes as a ranged touch attack, and any creature struck by this beam is blinded for 1d4 rounds unless it makes a DC 14 Fortitude save. This use of the gem expends 1 charge.
• The third command word causes the gem to flare in a blinding flash of light that fills a 30-foot cone. Although this glare lasts but a moment, any creature within the cone must make a DC 14 Fortitude save or be blinded for 1d4 rounds. This use expends 5 charges.
A newly created gem of brightness has 50 charges. When all its charges are expended, the gem becomes nonmagical.
Faint evocation; CL 6th; Craft Wondrous Item, daylight; Price 13,000 gp.

This item can be purchased normally, since it has an effect (the first one) that does not ever run out.

On the other hand, something like a wand or a staff that has a finite amount of charges is ruled by your ECL.

@ MindWandererB - Tactics for Zero recieved, thank you. I'll run that fight Friday and hopefully it'll be done before Sunday.

@ DSugui - Tactics for Dronnar recieved, thank you.

@ Hawkeye - Tactics for Eraca Moralta (vs Death) have been PMed. I do believe the Dwarf is going to have a hard time believing anything in that fight :D .

@ Pittbull - Tactics for Annalina Vale (vs Dracazar) have been PMed. That should be quick and easy one, one way or the other.

@ DSugui - Tactics for Indrithia Celeth (vs The Undertaker), aka the EHTC exhibition match, have been PMed. Thats probably the most straightforward fight with a wizard I've ever had.

@ Anaconda - Tactics for Destra Stormwind (vs Pestilence) have been PMed. Heres hoping the dice show her some favor, because I'm not entirely sure the arena being the best one it could be will be quite enough.

@ NiQil - Nope, no tactics change for that. Its not like you're lacking in either arrows or CLW charges on that guy :) .

@ Sauro - Tactics for Archdevil Asran will be sent tomorrow. I'd rather not contemplate that one at this hour...

I recall it being the Harvester.

Nah, I campaigned for the change because Mektos (5th at the time) was wielding a Level 9 Magic missile wand. All of his fights in that level and the level before pretty much were a matter of could you kill him before he got 3 to 4 rounds of shots. It was very unbalancing. It also resulted in him facing a brooch of shielding at myself making the decision to remove the brooch from the play by just destroying it. It did result in a set of arguements that resulted in the credit requirement for wands. As that rule was being written Harvester picked up a wand of MM 9 because it was so powerful at that level. Cat was curious why I didn't bother to spend the credits to keep my wand. The reason being I felt it was overpowered.

Yup ...

I didn't see the invis potion or else I figured he wouldn't use it. Minor edit: I only had to make 2 will saves so can you give me a PP back. As for the ready tactic, I think it was late and was pretty sure I was going to get ego whiped to death. I also guessed that I probably would have seen him comming.
TelinArtho

06-29-06, 03:50 PM
Hmmm - I think I misread your tactics about the empty mind:

3 PP: use for Empty mind vs ANY will save, unless I ID the power as demoralize.

I think I had read it as use Empty mind once, augmented up to give you the +3 (Ironically enough I only added +2 in the first save).

However, I see what you mean now - especially since you couldn't have augmented it up that high...

Its fixed now.

How long is the time between battles this week? I looked in the activities post and I couldn't find it.5 Hours. It's the big purple banner at the top. (So big, the eyes kind of pass it over.)...a Bat Swarm she can put Magic Fang on....Swarms can't be affected by any spell or effect that targets a limited number of creatures (like one), so that wouldn't work. Besides, it wasn't trained to attack you. But yeah, I was wondering what you might consider for this one. You could have tried using nothing but arrows--after all, Zero lost last week due to a single crit, when I honestly thought that would be his easiest fight yet.You both have sheets that are way too long. I had to cut out parts just to post this, and there is no fight! I suggest you put all removable parts of your sheet at the bottom below a marked area. So that pitlords can easily trim your sheet. Also look at the layout, I'm certian you can make more efficient ways to put all the details in and use fewer characters.Actually, I just redid Aerryl's sheet according to the new guidelines, and it's just about as trim as it can get. I suppose I could re-order the Allies and Fight History section, so that everything from the Fights down could be snipped. There's not much else I can do, though--there's really nothing redundant or unnecessary in her sheet at all that I can tell. Was there something you noticed?

5 Hours. It's the big purple banner at the top. (So big, the eyes kind of pass it over.)That's the problem. I have settings so that they don't load the IMG taggs. Helps with load times especially on some pages.

Actually, I just redid Aerryl's sheet according to the new guidelines, and it's just about as trim as it can get. I suppose I could re-order the Allies and Fight History section, so that everything from the Fights down could be snipped. There's not much else I can do, though--there's really nothing redundant or unnecessary in her sheet at all that I can tell. Was there something you noticed? You sheet is farely clean actually. I cannot find much that can be cut out. I prefer a more compact arrangement ins some minor ways. Each "enter" on the keyboard counts as two characters, so I try to limit those when I can. Also when I update my characters, I'll avoid having bolded and underlined headings. It's just unecessary. Anyway I was mostly speaking to Zevox. The way his accounting of past expenditures is done is very long. Also his stories are long as well. It would be helpfull if both of you arranged things so there was an easy place to cut all things below a certian point.

Swarms can't be affected by any spell or effect that targets a limited number of creatures (like one), so that wouldn't work. Besides, it wasn't trained to attack you.
Shows how much I know about swarms I guess. And I forgot completely about it needing a second trick to attack Outsiders. Wouldn't change my decision to surrender though, so its not that big of a deal.

But yeah, I was wondering what you might consider for this one. You could have tried using nothing but arrows--after all, Zero lost last week due to a single crit, when I honestly thought that would be his easiest fight yet.
I considered that. As near as I can tell, the best I could've done for this fight would largely be to repeat Asran's tactics vs Leif from last week - ascend to the canopy, hide in it, and fly about it, firing off arrows once he found Aerryl - but to add in using tattoos of force screen and potions of shield of faith to put his AC into the stratosphere (with the cover of the canopy he'd be at 31 while the buffs were up). But that would only last until Aerryl warped his bow, which would've been bad not only for this fight but for his next one if it gets decided that damaged equipment isn't restored in mid-cycle. And with the bow gone it'd be all over, since he could never hope to close to melee. Even if his SR or a lucky will save prevented you from warping the bow, he'd still be firing at an AC of at least 26, possibly 28 if you had opted to use that Cat's Grace scroll (and if the Furies were to help and melee the in-melee AC bonus would make that 30-32), with a modifier of only +8 for single shots or +6/+6 for rapid shots. Plus Aerryl has that buckler. With all that the only conceivable way he could win would be to sneak up on Aerryl through the canopy successfully (unlikely with her listen, spot, and her mount's blindsight) and take her by surprise with a crit, which is still "only" 3d8+21 damage - he'd need to roll very, very high damage to end it with that.

Sorry, but this was a financial decision, not an RP one. Asran would still like only one thing more than the chance to chop Aerryl into bite-size pieces and feed her to the Furies for being the first mortal to defeat him, but in this map, with Aerryl having the spells she did remaining, he just didn't have that chance, so trying wasn't worth the expendables and wand charges he'd use in the process. If they had been fighting in say the Sewer though, the fight would certainly be on.

Anyway I was mostly speaking to Zevox. The way his accounting of past expenditures is done is very long. Also his stories are long as well. It would be helpfull if both of you arranged things so there was an easy place to cut all things below a certian point.
*shrugs* Well, the stories are definitely staying on his sheet, period. RP was 90% of the reason I created Asran (the other 10% was a combination of the desire to play a Half-Fiend, the desire to play a Blackguard, and the fact that when I first started making him he would've been the first Half-Fiend in Living Gladius), and that background is the core of it. As for accounting, I quite like having everything listed out like that so I can double-check my calculations relatively easily from time to time - I've had several instances with some of my characters where I discovered I miscalculated at some point and they had a little more gold than I thought. Though if you're refering to the used expendables section, I've been considering redoing that one somewhat - I still want what was used in what particular fight/quest listed for recordkeeping and auditing purposes, but I think that it could be condensed.

Edit: Okay, I've condensed the used expendables section on his sheet. Should remove a fair amount of characters from it, since the weight/cost information for those and the silver color tags that were with them are gone now. Anything else you might be able to advise me on that could be condensed like that?

As for easy cutting, I was under the impression that as is you could cut everything from the background down if you wanted. For the record of the fight you don't really need the background, fight/quest results, or accounting information, do you?

Perius vs Ignatius (http://boards.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9508678) is up.

Quick and Dirty.
Eh heheh.

And, well, at least leveling wouldn't have matter much here. =X

Edit: Also Telin, although it won't matter for this fight since it's Week 3 for Perius, he didn't Wild Surge the Ego Whips, so the total PP cost is 14 PP for the fight, not 8. There simply wasn't a need to do so LOL.

OMG! I was away about 1 month and there are all those revolutions on the board!

The 3 Fights rule, caps, prebuffs, maps, what a headcache! :D

Many thanks to all of you that work to improve our game!

Ehm, ehm, I got a little problem, I have put my two char active before I was aware of the 3 fight cycle rule and they are equipped with only 1 set of expendables and spell prepared (generally I replenish them after each fight) now it seems that I can buy nothing until the 3rd fight... this will result in a probable loss for their next 2 fights, is there any way to fix this? My idea would be to send fixes that I would have done (if i was able to do if before deadline) to the pitlord of this week so he can write them to the fight.

Do you think it is possible?

For now:

@Pittbull: Dracazar's tactic sent

Barthleby & Leif vs Nighthag & 3 Wraiths is done. I moved it into the Kracknol/Cyra setup because the text was too long.

How long is the time between battles this week? I looked in the activities post and I couldn't find it. For those of you who have turned off images, you can instead check the URL of the image. There is a number at the end of the address which is the time roll. For example:

is 5 hours.

Thanks you for running this cool fight!

Expendables on Dracazar are 462,5 GP
He is ECL 3 so it the cap should be 3*3*50 = 450
So I have a scroll more than maximum allowed, I'll sell a crafted Mage Armor scroll

Also, if Zevox agree, I'll change this on the sheet:
Remove Invisibility from memory and put Blindness (it is for week2-3, i'll not use 2 blindness against Zevox)
I can't buy other scrolls for now because I'll exceed the cap

@King Uther, DirewolfX and Hawkeye 60
On Quesis' sheet there are 875 GP of expendables and the cap is 450
I don't know what happens to expendables out of cap:
1) Refund them?
2) Freeze them?
For now just consider this as list of expendables

Expendable Items
Potions
Potion of Protection from Evil. [CL1] [Apr05] [ 50 GP] [0.1 lb]
Potion of Magic Weapon ........ [CL1] [Apr05] [ 50 GP] [0.1 lb] [Frozen]

Powerstones
Powerstone of Force Screen..... [ML2] [Apr19] [ 50 GP]
Powerstone of Expansion(A+2)... [ML3] [Apr19] [150 GP]
Powerstone of Skate............ [ML2] [Apr05] [ 50 GP] [Frozen]
Powerstone of Chameleon........ [ML1] [Apr05] [ 25 GP] [Frozen]
Powerstone of Empty Mind(A).... [ML3] [Apr05] [ 25 GP] [Frozen]
Powerstone of Synesthete....... [ML1] [Apr05] [ 25 GP] [Frozen]
Powerstone of Vigor(A+2)....... [ML3] [Apr05] [150 GP] [Frozen]
Powerstone of Levitate psionic. [ML3] [Apr05] [150 GP] [Frozen]
Powerstone of Energy Adaptation [ML3] [Apr05] [150 GP] [Frozen]

So my active expendables are only 250 GP, and if you agree I'll buy:

Powerstone of Force Screen..... [ML2] [Apr19] [ 50 GP]
Powerstone of Expansion(A+2)... [ML3] [Apr19] [150 GP]

to use within for neek 2 fight cycle (for a total of 450 GP)

Tell me if there are problems.

Holy old red dragon dung!

Look at the monsters we are up against here!

Let me see that's one CR9 monster and a CR7 monster and 5 CR3 monsters.

So I calculate that the frost giant CR9 and the Ogre Barbarian CR7 are together an EL10 encounter, then add in 5 more ogres. Five Ogres are an EL8 encounter. So by my guess all that together is at least an EL11 maybe EL12 encounter for two ECL9 characters to defeat.

Let alone if you were to calculate the actual ECL of each monster involved. The Frost giant alone is ECL18, and the Ogre Barbarian is ECL10 and each Ogre is ECL6.

I just have to say WOW! It realy feals like the odds are stacked against Kracknol and Cyra on this one.

The real kicker is that if we win, I think we only get 2870xp and 3925gp each before ally penalties. Our foes are bringing almost 32,000! gp worth of equipment against us. Some how we only come away with about 1/4 of it. Realy I'd like those boots of speed for Kracknol if he can win this one.

Now as I mentioned before we are probably facing an EL12 encounter. Such a high EL encounter for ECL9 characters should reward 8100xp and 22,000gp to be divided among the winners.

It looks to me like we seriously need to rethink our monster fights. These encounters are simply too hard.

06-30-06, 12:43 PM
According to the Encounter Calculator (http://www.d20srd.org/encounterCalculator.htm) it's EL11.

Since you're 9th level characters, shouldn't you have a 9th level EL fight? I would think it would be rolled on the 9th level chart in the monsters section (which in theory could give you a 10th level EL if you got an unlucky roll).

I have no problem with that. Actually it eases my mind a bit knowing you'll have to use your one and only scroll if you want to use Invisibility in that fight :) . And as I said to Pittbull in my tactics, having 12.5 gp over the cap doesn't bother me nor change anything in my tactics, so if Pittbull doesn't care about it I'm fine with you keeping everything there too.

Neither of my charachters (Neidr Bresent and Ico Everber) were paired this week. :weep: Caterane, please don't forget them next week. I think what happened is that since there are two of us on a team, it was rolled twice.

Also since there are two of us who are ECL9, we should actually get an EL7 encounter level by the rules. The encounter level system is designed for parties of 4. Although I don't think we should actually get an EL7 encounter, getting an EL11 encounter is rather tough for an EL7 party. Furthermore the rewards should reflect the actual EL of the encounter.
TelinArtho

06-30-06, 01:58 PM
The rewards will reflect the actual EL of the encounter (unless this is another thing that was changed in my absence...) - so you shouldn't have to worry about that.

Also - every time someone gets a tough monster fight this issue rears its head about "an encounter level is designed to be a challenge for a party of 4." Everyone, including Cat, has heard this before - and all that can be said is that you are regularly fighting people of the same EL as you - so why should a monster fight be any different.

Fighting above your ECL does happen on occasion - but it is not the end of the world. If you were assigned a fight against a hellwasp swarm of the same ECL as you - and had no AoE spells or such - what would your argument be then?

I think the assumption was that monster fights were once easier than they are now - and that's true. There was a time when just about everyone won their monster fights - this is why there have been some special rules put in place (reroll autowins for the player for instance) and I think it helps make them a little more difficult.

In fact, looking over you and Cyra and your opponents - I think you guys have a fairly decent shot at succeeding, barring unforeseen criticals and such.

Take the pairings you are given and try to make the best of them. Think outside the box and see where you can succeed.

Okay - I'm done...

Just looking through the tactics of my opponent and noticed something that might affect the fight. Since it hasn't started yet, I'm reluctant to bring it up right now - but it seems as good a time as any:

Strategy is simple: Use the stone, then swim in search of my opponent. Note that Zero is less than a foot tall, so he is completely concealed in the water. When Sir Valkin is located, snipe at him with Psionic Shot from underwater (-2 penalty to hit, since the path of the arrow is only underwater for 1 squre). Don't bother with the horses, although make sure to keep away from them.

While Zero is 14 inches long, he is still a size category of Tiny - which makes him take a space of 2 1/2 feet. Yes - he could squeeze himself under the water to be completely submerged - but if he wishes to make attack actions, he will definitely need to come out of the water. This does mean he won't be taking the -2 to hit from shooting underwater, but it also means he doesn't get cover. Furthermore, although Overseer/Sir Valkin are not submerged - since they are in fact in the water (1 foot deep in it) - I don't think they are treated as attacking from land in this case.

[Edit] Also meant to include some further "wonky" things about size. A medium size half-orc who uses expansion, doubles in size. He normally is 6' 10" (maxium size for a half-orc) - so he doubles to 13' 8". However, he still only occupies a 10ft cube in combat. Had he used expansion to grow to huge size (2 size categories), he is described as being 27' 4" - but he only occupies a 15ft cube.

In other words - just because a character is at an extreme of his/her size category, doesn't mean that said character gets the benefits of being "smaller" or "bigger" without leaving said size category.

Well - its been down all day from what I've seen. I sent him a PM earlier today to ask him the status - but he didn't respond (he was online at the time).

That being said - IC will suit your rolling needs. For the map - I generally take a copy of the map locally and just edit it with Paint (or other program as you please). Not as pretty - but it gets the job done.

*winces* Well, thats exactly the problem. When it comes to maps, or drawing anything at all either in reality or on a computer for that matter, I have no talent whatsoever. Theres no way I could manage to actually edit a map myself. And the biggest problem is that without that mapmaker I'd have one hell of a time keeping track of whos where, especially with Zero's fly speed.

On the tactical issue, good point, I missed that when I went over his tactics (drat). I'll have to look up the rules for water and figure out what I'm going to do about that...

I'm not saying to do anything pretty.

I use the brush tool on paint with one color per person/ally. I don't draw lines from one place to another - just the end points of a particular move.

Alternatively, print out a copy of the map and just mock it up by hand with markers of round by round locations (I find this easy to do - but I do most of my fights while at work during down time...).

Thanks Telin - tactics for Destra forwarded.

And I think I've come to a decision on Valkin vs Zero. Though I won't let Zero gain total concealment from completely submerging himself (rules stating he has to take up a 2 1/2' cube and all for his size category), I will let him benefit from the improved cover creatures wading at least chest deep in water get vs those on land, for two reasons - first, his actual height causes that chest level for him to be lower than for most creatures in his size category (in this respect I will use his actual height), and second because though Valkin (or more technically Overseer, since Valkin is on his back) will be partly in the water, only his feet on one side will be, so hes mostly on land and thus should be susceptible to rules pertaining to such (from my perspective its about the same as an archer whos knee-deep in water trying to shoot at say a Kobold who is neck-deep in it - hes still going to have a harder time hitting the little lizard than if it were only knee-deep too).

Anyway, I'll run that tomorrow evening. If Drac's map editor and roller aren't up by then I guess I'll have to use Invisible Castle and a printout of the map with some of my minis (appropriate since I'm spending most of the day tomorrow at a DDM tournament I suppose - lets see, I have a Mounted Paladin figure I can use for Valkin and Overseer and a Small White Dragon for Zero, but what can I use for Foreman? hmm..).

I needed to make progress on War vs Loddick this morning if the fight was going to be finished before I left for vacation tonight. Since the roller and battlemap are down I'm not going to be able to finish it.

I already had a roller session started in CoCo, changing over to Invisible Castle is possible but too much trouble at this point, especially considering...

The mapper is down, I have a few rounds of combat finished with coordinates but the regular map on the Character Page has no coordinates. I could probably figure out where everyone is at and where they are going except that...

My printer is down waiting on ink...

Considering that I will be putting up siding on the house from dawn to dark, the only time I had available was late last night (gone), early this morning (gone) and tonight (about 2 hours) before I leave.

Changing everything over and completing the fight in 2 hours is likely not possible. I will need to pass it on to someone else. Setup and initiative (along with character sheet recording) is complete.

I will forward tactics to the first volunteer so long as I am still in town. If I am gone the players will have to forward their tactics.

The melee portion was very exciting.

King Uther please let me kindly say these issues:

1 - Quesis should expand in round 1 (as for tactic) and not in round 3, this let her know what was the mage position because she will surely see the hawk flying (the familiar does not share invisibility at that distance). This will have changed the fight because Quesis will have attacked the mage instead of Zog

2 - Perhaps you missed these sentences in tactic (I cannot see them in your quote):
# [A] Reinard Blueriver (DirewolfX)
Fast base him if he tries to use ranged weapons or spells (keep it at 10' while enlarged)
Quesis should start run/charge soon, first target should be the mage for a fast kill
As you can see it is clearly asked to follow the hunting sequence.
It is very stupid by Quesis to help the mage in his killing sequence, do you agree?
Also I pointed that Quesis is a skilled climber she could also climb over roofs to elude Zog melee until it is time to do it.

I know that those changes will need quite a rerun but you played Quesis like a All vs All fight and not an Hunter fight, please let me know what do you think about

Furthermore, although Overseer/Sir Valkin are not submerged - since they are in fact in the water (1 foot deep in it) - I don't think they are treated as attacking from land in this case.Actually, he'd still get Improved Cover, but the fact is that he's Tiny (long), not Tiny (tall). That makes him only as tall as a Diminutive biped, and thus less than 1 foot.
TelinArtho

I already conceded that I misspoke about not getting cover - I should have said he doesn't get total cover - he does get improved cover. Anyway - I still disagree with this:

Actually, he'd still get Improved Cover, but the fact is that he's Tiny (long), not Tiny (tall). That makes him only as tall as a Diminutive biped, and thus less than 1 foot.

I don't see anything in the SRD that explains that a tiny (long) is as tall as dimunitive (tall) - the fact of the matter is that a horse is a large (long) and takes up a 10ft cube; a tiny (long) still takes up a full 2 1/2 ft cube. If you can find where I am wrong about this - that is fine, but I'd like to see how Zero fires a bow while on all fours (and therefore staying long and not sitting back on his haunches to shoot).

I've mentioned before that height, vertical reach, etc. is sloppy in the rules. And I'll grant you that he pretty much has to become "tall" to shoot, so improved cover is what he gets.

@Dracazar

Looking at the fight from a logical perspective, the only character I could see deserving a possible rerun is Zog. Reasons why:

1. The familiar will not help anyone locate Reinard
2. Climbing doesn't help quesis live through Magic Missile charges
3. Running away doesn't either(and not in your tactics), but it does make the fight last longer. Zog would be chasing you around, firing magic missiles, and Reinard wouldn't catch up for many rounds. If Quesis took 7 more damage from Magic Missiles before Zog eventually closed to melee, Zog wins the fight because he takes 17 damage on the first attack on Quesis
4. If Reinard catches up to Zog, casts scorching ray like he would want to, Zog would turn around and kill him in one hit(the 17 damage attack). Zog could then heal with his wand(per his tactics), and easily be back at full health fighting a near dead Quesis. Using thematic rolls, it only takes 2 attacks to kill Quesis.

My end point is that in the moment of battle, a MM wand-wielding half-orc firing away, an invisible mage as well, Quesis' best shot would be to take down Zog prior to engaging Reinard. And you were 1 damage away from possibly winning this fight. Looking at this, if you honestly feel like it could've gone differently, then I'll look at a partial rerun tomorrow night.

Dear King Uther I appreciate very much your reply, please let me add:

1. The familiar will help Quesis to locate at least the starting box (so she will not go in wrong direction) and also she hase good listen/spot

2. On round 6 Quesis get AoO but you rolled 2d4+4 instead of 2d6+9 (I asked to go in rage on first hit, it is not an action), this will change the result. Also Zog damage shoud be 2d6+8 and not 2d6+9.

3. Again on round 7 Quesis damage is 2d6+9 (please give a look to her sheet) instead of 2d4+6.

4. On round 8 Zog should be killed and unable to do 17 damages

Thanks

I haven't looked at this fight at all, so I have no idea if this is even an issue, but I want to mention here that you cannot rage on someone else's action. So you would not be able to rage due to an AoO. The Court Decision entry on this issue is in regards to ready actions, but the situation is the same otherwise. An AoO occurs during your opponents action, just like a ready action, and rage specifically states that it cannot be performed in response to an opponent's action.

Q: Can a barbarian rage as a part of a ready action?
A: No. A ready action specifically states that it occurs during your opponent's action, while the rage ability specifically states that it cannot be performed in response to an opponent's action, which is what triggers a ready action.

No, its not quite that. Its a combination of me still remebering running that nightmare practice fight with one of your Horsemen vs Zero that was dragged out due to your wand (144 rounds...), the fact that you mentioned that you would have wanted that fight run all the way through had it been real (if theres a thought more frightening to me than that, I can't think of it right now), and the fact that Zero vs anyone with a wand of CLW is a nightmare to begin with since he has to take at least one round refocusing between every shot, so the healer could usually keep himself alive until his wand runs out.

Honestly, if I truly felt I could've survived all 260+ arrows that Zero had with him - I might've pressed the issue (though obviously in a truncated format). With only one wand though - I didn't think that was a possibility - even with my original tactics. If I think it will just prolong the inevitable though - I'd rather just save my wand though.

Since Sir Valkin is a pretty straightforward guy - I did try to find a way around the problem - but the fact of the matter is - he couldn't get to Zero in this situation.

As to the plains map - it introduces Zero burrowing more - but otherwise is pretty much the same problem. Zero's speed and hide-ability make him a formidable opponent.

Anyway - I'll be searching for bigger and better options, but I'm not sure what Sir Valkin could do - even with better equipment.

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate online rollers? That string of low rolls was ridiculous. There were like 3-4 numbers above 10 in that whole series....hard to succeed against that.

Pestilence

You may want to rethink that, since Destra will be in your guild come next level, and having two of the Guild's members facing each other is rarely good for income ;) . That said, Destra would be happy to oblige - your Horsemen are the type of folks she can understand, and almost get along with (if only they weren't lawful...).

I only need 12's or better 3 in a row to get up the tree....I didn't think it would be that difficult...especially since I made it in a match last week on my first three rolls LOL. Oh well...next level I get my first set of secondary attacks....then the strength of these builds will start to come through hopefully...all this staying power doesn't do me any good if I can't follow it up with damage.

As for Destra, she's welcome to the WAR....we need all the help we can get right now...another of our characters appears to have been abandoned (and I think I am going to have to find a backup guildmaster again), and we have two others who are about to be frozen. Which basically leaves the Horsemen, Zero, Valek, and Featylec and Ceilia, both of whom are rarely active. Seems like every character that joins lately gets abandoned...our list of former members is almost as big as our active member list LOL.

BTW, Eraca is fighting Death, not War....not that it matters right now...these builds won't start to seperate until 7th level when they start branch towards their prestige classes...

Well, Ceilia will be active next week, and Featylec will be too unless he gets accepted to KU's campaign (still waiting to hear yea or nay from him, which means he must be one of the 3 hes considering for the 6th slot). What I can promies you is that when Destra gets frozen, she'll go out with a bang for you. I agree about rage and ready action but i think it could be done to rage during AoO.

Entering a rage takes no time itself, but a barbarian can do it only during his action, not in response to someone else’s action

During AoO it should be your turn:

An attack of opportunity “interrupts” the normal flow of actions in the round. If an attack of opportunity is provoked, immediately resolve the attack of opportunity, then continue with the next character’s turn (or complete the current turn, if the attack of opportunity was provoked in the midst of a character’s turn).

Va'ria was a little different. She was just going on a high EL quest, and Pitlords decided she wouldn't be allowed to advance past ECL 10 from it, not that the guild couldn't make more than a certain amount from it (and since it was cut short due to KU's dissapearance she didn't even hit that). Destra will be acquiring a template that auto-jumps her in level - no other option. I suppose Cat could decide the Guild only gets so much from it, but as is now you'd get the full amount.

Anyway though, thats the distant future. Its taken Asran since February to hit ECL 8 from ECL 6, and he was rather successful in his matches for ECL 6 and 7, so I suspect it'll easily be Christmas time by the time Destra is ready for that quest. Which is good enough for me, since I'll need 28 credits to do it (3 for the quest, 20 for the template, and 5 for her to stay Neutral Evil and rather than being forced to CE and thus losing her Druid powers).

During AoO it should be your turn:

An attack of opportunity in and of itself is an action in response to someone else's action, which rage is specifically prohibited from being used in response to.

Also, it is only your action when your count in initiative comes around, not before or after. So unless you are performing rage during your action, then it would be during someone else's action, which, again, is prohibited by the rage ability.

Thank you Niqil

Hmm, I understand what you said, I'm a bit thoughtful because perhaps I would allow rage during AoO in my table top games where I'm DM just because it seems me quite logical action and nice role playingable. I'll further investigate about this issue.

However about the fight, King Uther still used the damage for normal size instead of large size for the first attack and also in the second attack rage is surely active and so it should apply rage+large-size attack
MindWandererB

07-03-06, 06:03 AM
The language on Rage is a bit awkward, to me. What I think they meant was that you can't activate Rage when you're not taking an action--in other words, it's not an immediate action. However, it's still a free action, which means you could ready it like you could ready any other free, move, or standard action (although you could not ready to rage and attack, since you can only ready a single action). Raging on an AoO seems unsupported in any event.

But I recognize that one could interpret it the way the Elders have done in the past. I don't think that was what was intended, but from a rules-lawyer perspective, there's nothing technically wrong with that interpretation.

Corrected. Kracknol stood one round longer in which he dealt 77 damage to the ogre but the result didn't change. If there's another mistake that brings the chief down, I can imagine that the team has a chance to win this if Kracknol kills the badly wounded frost giant quickly and heals before the regular ogres arrive.

Anyway, good fight. Perhaps the speed advantage would have been a good tactic to exploit.

The only thing I can think of would be that in round 7 Kracknol takes a 5' step to avoid an AoO. However since they have reach this does not realy prevent an AoO at all. I knew this and wrote a bit in Kracknol's tactics about it. His psicrystal is still alive, and should move so as to take an AoO (in my tactics). Since the foe only gets one AoO/round then Kracknol can draw his stone and manifest freely without taking AoO's. Also this means that the frost giant moves through a threatined square on his move in round 8. That AoO may be important.

Also with Kracknol's flail he has a bit higher strength bonus to damage. Instead of +8 it should be +11. That's not going to change anything, but I noticied it.
Caterane

You don't have a weapon in hand in that round and the armor spikes only deal 1d6+4. I am also sure a stupid ogre doesn't bat at a psicrystal; not that it matters.

I did miss the enlarged damage. I cannot allow you to rage during an AoO. So, you may knock him out, you may not. Let's find out:

Previous Damage rolls(2d4): 9, 11, 9

Zog would have been knocked out, and that does in fact change the fight. I will start it from there. However, if Quesis fails his sleep save the only thing that happens is Zog earns less money.

The fight did change, and negatively affects everyone except one person. Unfortunately for Reinard, he only specified to use Scorching Ray vs Zog, else the fight would've remained the same. I was under the impression (though I can't find a specific rules reference right now) that if a character is flying without wings (ie a spell-effect), that the character can't be tripped while flying. In the Blaergh fight - he is tripped numerous times - so this is a major point I want to address.

I'm still looking for a rules reference, but if someone can point it out for me - or correct me - that would be great.

EDIT: Court Decisions

Flight consists of two types. There is natural flight and supernatural flight. Natural flight is that associated with the Half-Dragon template and large size. Supernatural flight is that awarded by Fly spells or Winged Boots. The distinction is important for anti-magic effects, tripping, entanglement, trampling, etc. If you are awarded flight by a supernatural effect then it is negated by an anti-magic field or possibly a dispel magic effect. Entanglement, tripping or trampling have no effect on the ability of someone with supernatural flight to stay in the air. If, however, your flight is natural, then it is negated by entanglement, tripping or trampling and you will fall.

------

@Zevox - currently - I still don't see why you didn't have Blaergh charge. While 120ft was too far, instead of correcting it - you had me just move in and attack? It doesn't make a difference, since I still would've missed, but I'm just curious.

Dronnar vs Blaergh vs Sunstroke vs Manzarf is up.

@ Telin - On the charge, I just forgot. As you said, makes no difference, so no reason to change it.

On flying, drat then. I'm not sure entirely, but that would then mean that Manzarf would switch to straight striking after the first trip failed, and I think he may have rolled high enough to end it at the same time that way. One problem you'd also face then is the inability to take 5' steps when flying, which means as Manzarf 5' steps to strike you with his Guisarme, you'd draw AoOs each round and never get those claw attacks off, so I'd be willing to wager that nothing there will change. If you'd still like that redone, I can try wednesday morning to see if anything changes.

One problem you'd also face then is the inability to take 5' steps when flying....Why? As long as you have no minimum forward speed, there's no reason why you can't take a 5' "step" in the air.

Edit: I really don't think a delay penalty on Sunstroke is appropriate in this instance. He is not trying to avoid combat, nor has he been since round 3. He's actively seeking out and trying to interact with his opponents--he's just trying to do it on his own terms.

Imagine this in the Arena--had I presented the same tactics, it's pretty clear that there should be no delay penalty here. From when he stopped buffing and started moving out, he's not delaying anymore.

Furthermore, once an interaction has occurred, the delay timer resets (it's non-cumulative). That might have an effect on behavior.

Please re-think this when you make the edit for Bleargh. Even though these elements as they are aren't really worth an edit, you might as well make them if you have to redo large potions of the fight.

Edit 2:
@ DSugui & Abyssal - You two seem to have missed a crucial rule for sundering. When attacking a magical weapon, you cannot damage it if your weapon is not magical with an equal or greater enhancement bonus. So none of Manzarf's non-magical weaponry could ever damage Dronnar's Psiblade, being a +1 weapon. Didn't matter as it turned out, but could have. They didn't miss the rule, I'm afraid. You missed the errata on that rule. (It was in 3.0 and removed from most places in 3.5. They missed one but errata'd it out.)
@ MindWandererB - For someone who doesn't like the Hide and Move Silently skills (Pitlord profile ), you sure do seem to have an affinity for characters that make use of them. Hey, I said I dislike Spot and Listen, not Hide and Move Silently. There's a reason for that. :D I favor heavily defensive strategies, and one way of being defensive at a cost of nothing but skill points and the occasional expendable is stealth. That wasn't part of my original "concept" for Sunstroke, but evolved as I tried to figure out what to do with his skills. And I have to say, it's darn useful in an FFA, especially with them not being in the Grand Hall anymore.

Here are the tactics for Setzers fight: Sorry for being late, I'm glad that I even thought of it :).

This fight is totally different from my normal fights.
-Start by drinking a potion of Mage Armor and holding my loaded crossbow.
-I'll stay behind the cover in the starting boxes and use it to prevent Faelto from charging.
-I will shoot Faelto with my crossbow.
-When he gets close, I will drop my crossbow, get out a potion of Magic Fang and pick up my crossbow and start shooting again.
-If he should cast Entangle or any other spell on me that would negatively affect me if I stayed in my starting box, charge (or walk/run) towards Faelto and try to pull him off his ally (Grapple or Strength check). If Faelto gets an opposed Ride check, nevermind.
-If he is off of his ally, grapple him and squeeze him to death, ignoring his ally.
-If I can't seem to pull him off, just keep attacking him, making sure he can't charge me (You need to move at least 10 ft. to make a charge, so he can't use 5 ft. steps for it), again, ignoring his ally.
-If I'm below 8 hp and I'm grappling him, try to pin him and then get out a potion of CLW and drink it. If I'm not grappling him, take a 5 ft. step backwards, get out a potion of CLW and drink it.

I think that about covers it. Kendal has 13 int and 18 wis, so if a problem in the fight shows up, he should be able to think up something.

Thanks for pitlording and PM me if you need to ask something,
--Papapeperoni, God of Pizza's Faelto's tactics vs Kendal Aphos

This should probably be a tough fight for me. Here's hoping that the tactics will work for me instead of against...

My main plan is to burn through whatever druid spells I have left with summons and then ride by attack him with my scimitar.

Let's start in the default area, mounted with my buckler equipped and my scimitar in hand. Since the map is so big - let's plan to get to ~100ft away before casting anything.

Start with SNAII twice (dropping Heat metal and Cat's Grace) for hippogriffs. Direct Sauria while casting with a single move to help keep the distance from my opponent.

After that, SNA by dropping Faerie Fire, Entangle and lastly Produce Flame for Wolves. All summons should simply attack. If possible, move around Kendal so that I'm summoning from different directions to hopefully allow my summons to flank.

After all my summons are finished - start Ride-by-attacking. While mounted, Sauria cannot attack. If I am grappled - gladly fall from the mount and give Sauria the attack order. Assuming Sauria is alive (or summons are still active and alive) - Faelto will try to pin while in a grapple; if Sauria is dead (and no other summons are around) - she will surrender.

If Kendal is using evasive techniques in order to run away from my summons, try to get him into a corner.

When possible, use Sauria for cover and don't forget to use my mounted combat feat if Sauria is attacked.

If there's any questions - just PM me.

@Huan - thanks for posting Mssr. Hood's resounding defeat of the pesky cowardly Kobold.

On another topic - your usage of the tower shield in Ten Vermond vs. Khabil seems questionable to me. A character can claim total cover from only one side of his square at a time, and must use a free another standard action on his turn to change that designation. To have Ten just STAND there while Khabil heals up when he could simply move around the cover to a different side of Khabil's square and attack him seems relatively absurd. It's only a big piece of wood, after all.

I'm going to go check my PHB to make sure that I'm not spouting off for no good reason. Be right back.

07-04-06, 01:44 PM
Wow. Ok, not in the PHB. In the FAQ. There's a lot of it, so I'm putting it in sblocks.

Total cover prevents any attack against you. You can
use a tower shield to get total cover if you give up all your
attacks. What does “give up all your attacks” mean? Can
you move while getting total cover from the shield? Can
you cast a spell? Also, do you get total cover from all
directions or from just one side of your square? Will the
total cover from a tower shield negate spell effects? Will it
negate attacks of opportunity from movement or from
other actions such as spellcasting? Will it prevent charge
attacks against you? What about bull rush attacks? Can it
prevent grapple attacks or snatch attacks? Will it stop fear
effects, gaze attacks, or clouds of poison gas? Will it defeat
traps?
To claim total cover from a tower shield, you must use a
standard action. The tower shield rules don’t say that, but that’s
what they mean. Since you can take only one standard action
each round, you cannot also attack, cast a spell, activate a
magic item (except for some use-activated items), use a special
ability, use total defense, or start or complete a full-round
action during the same round you claim total cover from the
shield. You can, however, take a move action before or after
you claim cover from the shield.
Like other kinds of cover, the shield has to have a location
relative to you on the battlefield. When you use the shield for
cover, choose one edge of your space (not a corner). You have
total cover against any attack’s line of effect that passes
through that side of your space. If an attack’s line of effect goes
through the corner of the side of your space that the shield
blocks, you get cover from the shield (+4 AC, +2 on Reflex
saves) instead of total cover. If an attack’s line of effect passes
through a side of your space that the shield does not block, you
get no cover from the shield at all. To determine where the line
of effect enters your space, draw a line from the attacker’s
center to your center. Or, in the case of a magical effect, from
the effect’s point of origin and your center.
Once you claim cover from the shield, the shield keeps
blocking the side of your space that you chose until the
beginning of your next turn, when you can again decide
whether you’ll use the shield for cover. Once you choose the
side of your space that the shield blocks, you cannot change it
until your next turn.
You continue to threaten the area around you while you use
the shield for cover; however, it provides your opponents with
the same benefits you get. You cannot make attacks through the
side of your space that the shield blocks, and should you attack
through the corners of that space, your foe gets cover against
your attack. Since cover of any kind prevents attacks of
opportunity (see page 151 in the Player’s Handbook), the
shield keeps you from making attacks of opportunity in a pretty
wide swath.
Total cover or cover from a tower shield has the following
effects in different situations:
• Magical Attacks: A tower shield’s effects on
magical attacks depend on the kind of magical attack.
Any attack aimed at your equipment is aimed at you.
If a magical attack has you as a specific target (that is
it does not merely affect the area that contains you
but is aimed right at you), the shield has no effect. All
rays fall into this category, as does any spell that has
a Target entry in its header and any spell that has an
Effect entry and affects creatures (provided, of
course, that the attacker can and does choose the
shield user as a target). Magical attacks that fill areas
(bursts, cones, cylinders, lines, emanations, and
spreads) are subject to all the rules for cover on page
151 of the Player’s Handbook. Such attacks are
completely blocked if line of effect between you and
the attack’s point of origin passes through the side of
your space the shield blocks. You get cover (+4 AC,
+2 on Reflex saves) if the magical attack’s line of
effect passes through the corner of the blocked side.
Spread effects reach around the shield if they
normally would extend into your space, but you still
get a Reflex save bonus for cover when they do. A
gaze attack is blocked if the shield would give you
total cover against attacks from the creature with the
gaze attack. If the shield gives you cover only, you’re
still subject to the gaze attack (although you could
avert or close your eyes to avoid the attack).
• Attacks of Opportunity: As noted earlier, cover or
total cover prevents attacks of opportunity. So you
could, for example, hunker down behind a tower
shield and pick up a weapon or rummage around in a
backpack and avoid attacks of opportunity against
you. If you’re moving while using the shield for
cover, things get a little more complicated. You must
determine whether the shield gives you cover (or
total cover) at the point during your movement when
you’d normally provoke an attack of opportunity.
Remember that attacks of opportunity are usually
resolved before the actions that provoke them. In
many cases, the shield won’t be positioned correctly
to protect you during your whole move.
• Charging and Bull Rushing: Opponents can charge
you while you claim cover from the shield. An
opponent moves as normal when charging you,
moving to the closest square from which a melee
attack normally would be possible. If the shield gives
you total cover from the attack, the attack
automatically fails. Foes can bull rush you normally,
moving right into your space in spite of the shield.
You normally get an attack of opportunity against
someone entering your space, but not if the shield
gives your foe cover or total cover.
• Grapple and Snatch Attacks: Total cover from a
tower shield blocks such attacks (the foe just can’t
get hold of you). The foe could, however grab the
shield. Conduct such attacks just like any other
grapple or snatch attack. Your foe can’t damage you
unless he pins you first. You can escape the foe’s
hold simply by dropping the shield (a standard action
since it’s strapped to your arm), so long as the foe has
not pinned you.
• Traps: Cover or total cover from a tower shield is
just as effective against a trap as it is against any
other attack.

So yeah. You're basically playing Ten way too stupid.

Kendal vs Faelto (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=9545688&postcount=723) is up. I hope everything is OK.

Well - there's a few things - and they mostly have to do with the slight improvisations you made.

First of all, Kendal lists a +1 dodge bonus to his AC, due to the Dodge feat. He needs to specify who this is against each round. Usually, the default would be to specify it in the tactics, but absent that it would be up to the pitlords discretion. Since Kendal only mentions ignoring anything but Faelto - I would presume that would mean his Dodge is applied to her - however, as it is it is a pitlords decision. In multiple rounds, Kendal had multiple opponents attacking him - and I would appreciate it to be specified. Since there's at least one instance where this 1 point in AC makes a difference (round 7).

For instance, a summoned monster disappears just before the caster's action. So if Faelto summons a hippogriff in round 4 - it will take actions in rounds 4, 5, and 6 - and disappear before Faelto's action in round 7. The only reason I mention this is that Kendal was switching targets because the summons was "disappearing." This actually makes a difference in the situation where the 2nd hippogriff is "disappearing" so Kendal moves on to attack the 1st wolf - killing it before it gets its third round action. This cascades to the 2nd wolf being struck down early as well. Since this is directly relating to the issue above, the two are intertwined.

In round 6, I seem to have lost an action. In round 5 - I spend the full round casting - so the spell will finish before my action in round 6. However, I don't seem to be doing anything in round 6 - which means a wolf comes out a round earlier.

In round 13, Kendal goes straight to attacking Faelto - instead of following his tactics and drawing and drinking a potion of CLW. Since in the following round - it was probably clear that Faelto would ride by again - I'm not necessarily opposed to this - but at the same time - you probably shouldn't be improvising tactics before they have failed. If he does drink the potion, he'll face two additional attacks from me before getting a grapple going, so that's potentially fight affecting.

I'm confused about the actions in round 14. It seems that you had Faelto break the grapple - however, the only thing I asked for was to move the grapple to the ground (so that Sauria could attack) and to start pinning. It seems I was successful in breaking the grapple - but since my tactics say to move the grapple - we should fall off the mount - which in his current condition (4hp) might kill him.

You also had Sauria and the Wolf making AoO - which I don't really understand - since Sauria can't attack while mounted and I don't see anything (other than the movement away from the wolf in round 13) that would draw an AoO.

The last thing I want to mention about the fight itself: my opponent's AC while pinned is 10 (base) -4 (pinned) - 5 (dex is treated as 0) + 4 (armor) = 5. Dodge bonuses are not usable when you are immobile - neither is the monk's AC bonus. Sauria would succeed in two hits on round 17 causing 13 damage total.

Lastly, Sauria does not negatively effect Faelto's rewards, nor positively effect Kendal's rewards since Sauria is a class feature ally (Animal Companion).

Obviously, I feel there's a significant amount that should be fixed in the fight and would appreciate the adjustments.

Why? As long as you have no minimum forward speed, there's no reason why you can't take a 5' "step" in the air.
I recall seeing such somewhere - whether it was the errata, FAQ, or SRD, I'm not entirely sure. I'll check up on it.

Edit: Upon checking all three documents, I've been unable to find that reference. Which is rather disturbing, since I distinctly recall seeing something somewhere that mentioned that this was not possible, since I noted it at the time as something I should remember for Asran. Unless someone else might know where I may have seen such or I stumble across it though I will have to edit the fight for Blaergh beign untrippable and not getting AoOed by Manzarf. I doubt it will change the fight considering Manzarf's big AC, fortitude save, and hp vs Blaergh's low HP, attack, and damage, but we'll see.

I'm inclined to disagree, since you did specify to make sure to hide from combat until you reached your designated position. In the normal arena you likely wouldn't have been looking to reach a specific position, but simply to spot your foe and start sniping. Anyway, since you won regardless, it seems to be a non-issue unless an edit causes Blaergh to survive while Manzarf falls. We'll see about that tomorrow morning.

Edit 2:
They didn't miss the rule, I'm afraid. You missed the errata on that rule. (It was in 3.0 and removed from most places in 3.5. They missed one but errata'd it out.)
NiQil pointed this out to me in a PM too. Sorry, I wasn't aware this was a 3.0 rule (never played before 3.5) that had been changed. I simply saw the note in the SRD and DMG and assumed it applied to weapons only for some reason.

Not so fun as I thought it would be...
No kidding... blech. Looks good to me. Terrible rolls kill Indrithia again - that girl just has no luck in the arena :( . Oh well, at least the EHTC gets the same ammount either way.

Telin, I'll look into the issues you have mentioned later today. I won't promise to change how I've dealt with tactics, because of the fact that Peperoni's tactics didn't quite respond to the situation (he clearly didn't expect those summonings).

Should he know that the summons disappear after 3 rounds is something we can argue about. As a player I would know it. I know it isn't good RP but the CoCo is full of metagaming anyway.

Faelto was Kendal's main opponent so she is the dodge buddy. I missed that in his sheet, but I would decide it that way anyway.

I somehow was thinking Sauria as a warhorse, that's why I made you drop Kendal. The reason for those AoO's is that Kendal moves himself to your space if he continues the grapple and that provokes an AoO. Sauria shouldn't be making one because of the reason you mentioned. Dropping BTW wouldn't kill Kendal, he has soft fall and I think it helps here (I have to check).

You seem to have a clear opinion how I should've handled Kendal's tactics. Fine, so do I. :) I'm not very convinced that I should be changing it just because you think that I'm wrong with my decisions. Your point of view probably favors Faelto (of course). Don't take this personally, that's just how things usually go.

I'll try to fix the rules mistakes today after work and consider the other things you've mentioned. The most important thing is probably the mistake in Kendal's AC, which will cause him probably to die and change the result.

07-05-06, 01:01 AM
Slow fall - the monk ability - would only apply if there was a wall in reach - of which there are none in the Plains arena.

In all honesty, I do disagree with the way you have adjusted his tactics - that being said - I only ever ask for the discrepencies to be explained. THe case of not using the potion of CLW seems to be a direct diversion from the few tactics that did apply - the other ones are much less important. I have pitlorded a lot of fights - but if I find myself changing tactics without good reason - then I don't think I'm doing the fight justice.

That being said - in terms of edits - the only part that is required (in my opinion) are the actual mistakes that do cause a change in the fight - like my summons coming on the correct rounds, the corrected AC and dodge bonus, etc). If the tactics changes were merely mistakes on your part (as in - you missed a portion of the player's tactics) - I generally would want those applied too - but again - this is of lesser import (though - there are certainly cases where improvisation sometimes justifiably leads to a holdover or rerun).

Thanks for giving the fight more time and consideration.

The big ECL 6 FFA has been edited for Blaergh's mechanical error. No change - one of Blaergh's extra claw attacks got through, but Manzarf made his save, and one round after he killed him in the first run both his attacks hit and ended the Ghoul. It did reduce the number of arrows Manzarf used by 3 though, since he had to spend extra time getting his bow and stowing his guisarme.

Bah, a rerun after the dealine screwed up my character information.

For the record I dont have any objections to the reasons for the rerun, but we just stood there round after round and trading blows (flanked) when I asked to retreat to an unflankable position, even if it meant taking AoOs to do so.
