Editing deadline for this week is up in about 60 minutes.

Post any comments or concerned for this weeks fights in this thread, be aware of the Rules of Gladius (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=448520), be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, do feed the pitlords, and above all, have fun!

And times up people. Pencils down, time to await the pairings.

Now about that feeding - anyone have some pizza they don't want? ;)

Well, no pizza, but I do have a 'Fudge Round' by Little Debbie. Delicious little things, probably as bad for you as twinkies.

And in other news, Gray Xander is set loose on the ECL 4 league. Cower mortals, it has been months since I deigned to defeat someone at this level. /bragging off

We could use a handful of additional pitlords. Only lords for 33 fights. Send me a PM if you can run another fight.

I have a new idea which I will try out this time: If there are not enough pitlords, miniquests will have to wait. They use up one pitlord for one characters.

Hmm... interesting idea. If that'll avoid having to do another State of Emergency, sounds good. But will the miniquesters just not activate this week then, or will they be sent to the arena since they were supposed to be active?

@Elders:
I posted something into the Ghost Discssion Thread and hope to get some feedback on it.

May I suggest that people only be allowed to have 1 free character up an running without having to pit a fight? I think that's how it worked before.

*shrugs* No big deal. You've been away for a while, and the SoE has only happened once (albeit for several weeks when it did). Not something you can be expected to know about if you weren't here when it happened.

PAIRINGS DONE

Credit Changes:
+7: KingUther
+5: Caterane, Myrridin
+3: Kaigan, Sauro, Malither
+2: Gonbow, Sindorin
+1: AbyssalStalker, Ariel23, Capt.Strong, Dracazar, funnymike, lonewolf, macbrea, Mindwanderer, Mysticmonk, Skojar, Magister, Turin, NiQil, Erithmu
+0: DSugui, Vathelokai, Luni
-1: Stormwind
-2: Huan, Zevox

Weren't that many miniquests this time. More importantly, there is only one held-over fight and this has a positive effect on the number of pitlords available. Please make sure you post your fight on time.

Good luck!

Two more multiplayer fights for me this week eh? Well, at least one's only a 3 person match.

@ King Uther - Tactics for Asran should be forthcoming tomorrow afternoon (God but thats ironic, KU pitlording Asran's first arena fight).

@ Ariel23 - I'll send you a PM tonight with ideas for tactics for the team fight.

@ Erithmu - I'll get you a descritpion of your monster tonight (once I know how to work it, heh). Friday is my best day to run your fight (as per usual with me). Tactics by then would be greatly appreciated :) .

Aerryl just made level 6 (even mentioned it in the header) but is in the ECL 5 league. Not that I have a problem taking an easy fight, but it's not exactly fair to Erithmu. I'll give Cat/Pitlords some time to make a change before I submit tactics.

Yep, looks like it. I feel for you man, but someone had to run it, and you're the only one taking max fights atm, so you were the most likely to get it.

Tactics for Destra have been re-sent to you. Best of luck to you. Like I said last week, I wouldn't wish this one on my worst enemy.

@MysticMonk and King Uther: My tactics have been sent as well. Sunstroke fought Ba'al once before and won, and Sunstroke has gotten a big power boost since then. That one should be short and brutal.

The other one... I hate FFA's. Hate 'em hate 'em hate 'em. And Asran has no previous battles, so I have nothing to judge his tactics by. I do not have high hopes.

@ Gonbow: Tactics for Death sent via PM. Congratulations to Finrod Felagund on his victory.

@ DSugui: I sent you a PM with links to the posts that have the character sheets and tactics for everyone in the FFA that was held over. All you have to do is quote the posts and then copy and paste the info from them into your own post, and your setup is done. Hope that helps save you some time.

Hi all!

This is my first arena fight that I’m participating in, and I’m very excited. I have some questions though.

I have found an error on my sheet, and I was wondering how to go about correcting it. I have a wood elf monk, and I forgot that they also have the high elfs +2dex and -2 con, in addition to the +2 str and -2 int. How should I go about correcting this? Is it correctable at this point?

My sheet, however, does not compare to my opponents, Captain Sissay http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8717568

Just looking her over quickly, I’ve noticed the following:
-She is gaining two shield bonuses. I thought that you were only allowed to benefit from one shield at a time?

-Her horse is very odd. I thought the way you figured out the stats for an animal companion is to take the normal stats of the critter, add +2 to it’s HD(and BAB) +2 to it’s natural armor, +1 to it’s str and dex, 2 bonus tricks, and the animal gets evasion. Doing that, I get this:

Horse, Heavy, 3rd level druid companion
Size/Type: Large Animal
Hit Dice: 5d8+10 (32 hp)
Initiative: +2
Speed: 50 ft. (10 squares)
Armor Class: 16 (-1 size, +2 Dex, +5 natural), touch 11, flat-footed 14
Base Attack/Grapple: +4/+11
Attack: Hoof +1 melee (1d6+1*)
Full Attack: 2 hooves +1 melee (1d6+1*)
Space/Reach: 10 ft./5 ft.
Special Attacks: —
Special Qualities: Low-light vision, scent, evasion, share spells, link with druid
Saves: Fort +5, Ref +5, Will +2
Abilities: Str 17, Dex 14, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6
Skills: Listen +4, Spot +4
Feats: Endurance, Run
Environment: Temperate plains
Organization: Domesticated
Challenge Rating: 1
Advancement: —
Level Adjustment: —

Which is a very different horse then the one posted on the character sheet. A lot less BAB, to hit with hooves, damage, an extra feat, etc.

That’s all I see on my quick overview, but, what should I do about these errors? Am I missing something with sissay?

@ my gladiators (Niva/Luni, Namara/Usurpator, Orlen/Bardic Cheese, and Valek/DSugui): ordinarily I get my fights up by Friday, but this week I have a critique on Saturday and I'll be up all night for the next few nights working on that... your fights will be done on Sunday and Monday afternoons.

You can correct it, but not until after your fight is posted. You could either just say that your character is a High Elf if you want to keep the scores as they are, or change them for the error. For the fight, just note the important changes this would cause in your tactics (the increased con meaning increased hp and fortitude save, lowered int reducing the bonuses on int-based skills, etc) if you want to keep him as a Wood Elf, or tell the pitlord that you'll be changing the race to High Elf since thats what hes statted as anyway.

Just looking her over quickly, I’ve noticed the following:

You are correct. The two bucklers, since both provide shield bonuses to ac, do not stack - and in fact if he tries to wield a weapon in the same hand as he has a buckler he takes a penalty to his attacks which he forgot. The problem with the horse is that Greezer tried to customize the horse's feats, which I don't believe is allowed with animal companions, and for some reason gave it an extra 1st level feat as well. Plus he thought that it got a stat increase at its 4th HD, which Animal Companions don't.

For what you should do, you can post these errors over the Prison thread (which will mean Greezer will need to fix them within 2 weeks or have his character unable to be paired until he does) and point them to the pitlord, asking him to take them into account for the fight.

Hello there!

Regarding the stats: I would send a PM to both your opponent and Pitlord about the incorrect stats, and what your character sheet SHOULD look like. Fix it ONLY after the fight is posted.

Regarding the shield bonus: You're correct. You can only have one shield bonus. I would post in the prison about this and notify the pitlord.

Regarding the animal companion: You're correct here as well. I suspect Greezer used a Heavy Warhorse as the base instead of the correct Heavy Horse. I would post in the prison about this and notify the pitlord (one post with both violations in the prison is sufficient).

Note: When I say Pitlord, I mean the person running your fight, not the actual Pitlords board ID.

Ignatius, Vicar of Bahamut vs an Ettercap and 2 Medium Monstrous Spiders (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8755799&postcount=426) is up. Does the Half-Dragon turn the spider-man and his pets into a roast, or do thier combined efforts prove too much for him? Check if you wish to know.

@Zevox

First off, a minor nit-pick and something that doesn't change a thing: Improved trip allows me to make a melee attack after the trip for free, that is why I wanted to wait till movement, so I could swing, drop and then deal damage. just an FYI.

Vicar (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=vicar)

Lastly, the combination of the monsters gave it away more than your description. Think reverse enginerring. I don't think using that method would have changed the way I wrote tactics, but I probably would have had a more well developed ranged attacker strategy. I think that if you had rolled 4 spiders, the other two would have died in the cone anyways.

Ah, okay. For some reason I thought that was the effect of the Knock-Down feat from the Divine section, but I was wrong. Would have shortened it if I had remembered, but as you say no change, so no problem. :)

Lastly, the combination of the monsters gave it away more than your description. Think reverse enginerring. I don't think using that method would have changed the way I wrote tactics, but I probably would have had a more well developed ranged attacker strategy.
Okay, thanks. Something to think about for if I get assigned another monster fight.

@Zevox

Another thing about monster fights is that the rewards are based on the monsters that are actually fought not the 'ECL' table on which the fight is rolled on. Winning rewards are not capped but losses are still capped as normal though.

For example:

In this fight ECL5 gladiator vs CR3 + 2CR1 would yield 750+2*(300)=1350xp and 900+2*(300) = 1500gp

Note that if Ignatius had fought 4 spiders instead of 2 the reward would have been 750+4*(300)= 1950xp and 900+4*(300) = 2100gp for the tougher fight.

Ready Feb 22nd, 06. Free Activity: Scribing Scrolls (See Free Activity Section Below)
can anyone confirm that either A) the Feb 22 a typo or B) this got added in the fights by accident?

Looks like an accident. He was indeed in a fight on Feb 22nd (here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8563464)), but his sheet was never updated for it. That probably means the ready date wasn't updated either, and Cat either just noticed the 22nd date or figured it was typo.

Which means that either Kaigan will have to figure out that his character is up for an unexpected fight and send tactics, or Caterane will have to reassign the fights at the last minute (probably to a monster), or it will be a win by forfeit. The second is unlikely, so hopefully it will be the first. Kaigan, you there?

@funnymanmike: due to the confusion, it would be nice if you gave Kaigan some extra time to get tactics out to you. You have no obligation to do so, but it's also not fair to mark a loss against someone who wasn't signed up to fight.

Kaigan tends to send tactics around Friday evenings a lot, as he is busy a lot during this time of the week. Unless you really cannot, I'd suggest waiting until then. Or PM him.

You can, of course, deliver a touch attack with an unarmed strike--this would normally provoke an AoO without IUS, and has to hit the target's normal AC instead of touch AC, but in this situation, there would be no repurcussion (and it would do another 1d3+2 damage).

Couple of things....

In round 8, psionic fist cannot be used in conjunction with shocking grasp.

PSIONIC FIST [PSIONIC]
You can charge your unarmed strike or natural weapon with additional damage potential.
Prerequisite: Str 13.
Benefit: To use this feat, you must expend your psionic focus. Your unarmed strike or attack with a natural weapon deals an extra 2d6 points of damage.
You must decide whether or not to use this feat prior to making an attack. If your attack misses, you still expend your psionic focus.

Psionic fist can only be used with an unarmed strike or a natural weapon.

Touch Attacks: Touching an opponent with a touch spell is considered to be an armed attack and therefore does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

When attacking with a touch spell, you are not making an unarmed strike (since the spell itself now classifies you as armed, since you can threaten an area with a touch spell), and are not attacking with a natural weapon (since a spell is not a natural weapon). So the damage in round 8 will need to be adjusted, and the fight should continue. May only last another round or two, but could be more.

Also, you have my AC incorrect the entire fight...it is 22. It would only be 21 on the very first 2-handed charge attack with the waraxe, since I lose the buckler AC when I use a weapon in the buckler hand, and then the penalty for charging makes my AC a 19 in the following round. All other rounds my AC should be a 22, and I should be attacking 1-handed, as written on my sheet.

Also, since shield and expeditious retreat were both cast from scrolls, they are both cast at CL 2 (per the scroll on Gray's sheet), and only last 20 rounds each. A minor but potentially larger point if the fight lasts that long.

Lastly, and this one I am not sure about, so I would appreciate some opinions as I could not find this scenerio covered anywhere (maybe I just missed it). In round 6, War has Gray based, but Gray is invisible. Gray draws a scroll and casts while being based but invisible. Does this provoke an AoO? Normally it would, but I am unsure what the invisibility does to the situation.
King Uther

03-25-06, 01:05 AM
Invisibility prevents AoOs. Your opponent cannot tell you are defenseless. I could see some confusion when dealing with casting spells, as in theory you could pinpoint with Listen, etc...

But the fact remains that if you cannot see your opponent(via invisibility) you cannot threaten his action.

You know, something was tickling the back of my mind even as I wrote in that part of the round. Who knows? It might save War a charge of CLW if he takes full damage from the claw. I'll edit it in later, after the guys have a chance to give it a once-over of their own. No sense in doing more edits than one. Thanks, MWB.

Rats. Didn't notice that it was a buckler. Figured that you never wrote in your tactics to ready the shield, and so I didn't include it in your AC. I can't think of any situation that it mattered, but I'll look again. Incidentally, why should the charge attack be made with a 2-handed grip? Since you want the buckler's AC at all times, you'll get it, be it beneficial or not. =)

Also, since shield and expeditious retreat were both cast from scrolls, they are both cast at CL 2 (per the scroll on Gray's sheet), and only last 20 rounds each. A minor but potentially larger point if the fight lasts that long.

True, but the fight probably won't last that long. That first shocking/psionic fist attack is going to hit your stunned/blinded AC, AND is going to get an additional 1d4+2 damage from the Skum claw. There's a slightly worse than even chance that his Greatsword attack is going to kill you. We'll see.

You're correct. Invisibility (total concealment) bypasses AoOs, even from casting spells in threatened areas.

Whoa whoa whoa.

If Xander wanted to deliver the Shocking Grasp and Psionic Fist as an unarmed strike, would he have to wait until the NEXT round to do it?

I know that you can cast a touch spell and then touch as part of the casting, but can you cast a touch spell and then physically attack as part of the casting?

I seem to remember that being listed as an option somewhere, but it just doesn't sound right.

Hmm. Look at Niqil's qoute... that does seem to be the case. I thought I could cast and attack all as one. Well, so much for getting a chance to use truestrike in this particular combo then.

If I need to though, I can deliver the shocking grasp with my bite. +3 to hit on my bite and +3d6 damage in exchange for a round of not attacking? Sounds like a good spell to me.

I think this is what you are looking for:

Touch Spells in Combat: Many spells have a range of touch. To use these spells, you cast the spell and then touch the subject, either in the same round or any time later. In the same round that you cast the spell, you may also touch (or attempt to touch) the target. You may take your move before casting the spell, after touching the target, or between casting the spell and touching the target. You can automatically touch one friend or use the spell on yourself, but to touch an opponent, you must succeed on an attack roll.

Touch Attacks: Touching an opponent with a touch spell is considered to be an armed attack and therefore does not provoke attacks of opportunity. However, the act of casting a spell does provoke an attack of opportunity. Touch attacks come in two types: melee touch attacks and ranged touch attacks. You can score critical hits with either type of attack. Your opponent’s AC against a touch attack does not include any armor bonus, shield bonus, or natural armor bonus. His size modifier, Dexterity modifier, and deflection bonus (if any) all apply normally.

Holding the Charge: If you don’t discharge the spell in the round when you cast the spell, you can hold the discharge of the spell (hold the charge) indefinitely. You can continue to make touch attacks round after round. You can touch one friend as a standard action or up to six friends as a full-round action. If you touch anything or anyone while holding a charge, even unintentionally, the spell discharges. If you cast another spell, the touch spell dissipates. Alternatively, you may make a normal unarmed attack (or an attack with a natural weapon) while holding a charge. In this case, you aren’t considered armed and you provoke attacks of opportunity as normal for the attack. (If your unarmed attack or natural weapon attack doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity, neither does this attack.) If the attack hits, you deal normal damage for your unarmed attack or natural weapon and the spell discharges. If the attack misses, you are still holding the charge.

You are correct...he would cast the spell of shocking grasp, and then hold the charge, and then in the following round he can make an attack with an unarmed strike or a natural weapon to discharge the shocking grasp and expend focus. So the damage roll you have would still be used, but everything is going to get bumped down a round, meaning War is still going to have a round of actions in there, based on how things are listed now. Could change things.

I couldn't allow that in good conscience. A good idea now is worthless if it isn't in your tactics THEN. Live and learn. I'll just have to bump everything down a round and let War have a swing at you. After all, you still have two attacks to his one, and you out-gun him to boot.

Any other concerns or questions (from either of you) before I go in and edit?

Go ahead; but I have to at least use my claws, if not my bite. As Niqil pointed out, I cant just tap him to expend the psionic focus, so I'll be doing extra damage anyways.

So as to be fair, War's first attack (the charge) should be one-handed, so the Strength portion of the damage total should be adjusted accordingly.

Edit: And boy how mad would I be if War made a miracle comeback, only to get Gray down to the amount of hp that will be adjusted off of that first attack and lose? LOL

Hi,
could someone please take look at this fight:
http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8769794&postcount=428

i have noticed some mistakes CaptainStrong made:

1. My horses reflex is +6 not +4 as he wrote.

2. In my tactics i wrote this :

If he is visible from the beginning, stay at distance, tell Nightmare to grapple-attack him, summon croc(next to him, for full attack), and shoot with my Mangate.

he started shooting with Mangate inmediatly, while i said he shoudl summon a croc first.

I think this has an effect on the game, thats the reason i say this.

Thank you

1. My horses reflex is +6 not +4 as he wrote. He wrote "Reflex Save: Rolled 1! + 6 = 7." That's a +6. The Str check to break out should actually be at only +3 as far as I can tell, but he has it at +4--is that what you're referring to?
2. In my tactics i wrote this :

If he is visible from the beginning, stay at distance, tell Nightmare to grapple-attack him, summon croc(next to him, for full attack), and shoot with my Mangate.

he started shooting with Mangate inmediatly, while i said he shoudl summon a croc first.First of all, Nightmare isn't trained to grapple, so he won't do it. He'll only attack. However, your tactics presented CaptainStrong with a dilemma: you wanted to conjure up the crocodile right next to Far'gon, but when you first spotted him, he was too far away to do that. So Strong had a choice: violate your tactics by waiting to cast until your opponent was in range, or violating them by placing the crocodile too far away.

In retrospect, he probably should have done the latter, since you wanted to enable the crocodile to make a full attack, but crocodiles don't have a full attack routine. But this is purely a judgment call and there's nothing wrong with Strong's choice.

@CaptainStrong: When someone's tactics fail for any reason, I always annotate it into the fight so readers can see why I deviated from the written tactics. It saves confusion later on.

@Greezer: You do not have direct manual control over your creatures. You have to use Handle Animal to make them do anything--and in the case of SNA, the creatures are untrained, so it takes a full-round action to attempt to push them to do anything but attack. No grappling, no strategic movement, no nothing. In the case of the crocodile, it will probably try to use Improved Grab on any Small creature regardless of your orders. You can get around this with Speak with Animals, but nothing else.

Also, your dogs' tricks are wrong. "Hunting" consists of attack, down, fetch, heel, seek, and track, not aid.

Alrighty, I finished the fight. Sissay won. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8769794&postcount=428) . Fargon made some bad rolls (like all of my characters in Real Life), and got tail-slapped to death.

One question: Sissay loses 25% gp and xp for bringing in 1 CR's worth of allies and winning, but does Far'gon get +25% gp/xp for losing?

Wow, very bad luck for Famine, I can't believe they got him like that through his AC. Those were some crazy high rolls for Destra and her pets.

Wow. Seems like my characters are doomed to be marked by either extreme good luck or extreme bad luck in thier fights. Featylec vs Finrod, Alboreth vs Risal, Featylec vs Cher, Destra vs Trixie, all of Aldyrr's fights and Mindrel's fights, and now this. I just hope Destra luck doesn't take the opposite turn in this fight at a crucial moment.

Just one comment though - Korinel's tattoo has to be at minimum manifester level, per CoCo house rules, so he only gains 5 hp from it and it ends round 13.

Actually...a rather large concern here...you and Pittbull both did the same thing to Famine...maybe I didn't make it clear enough in his tactics. I never wanted him to move out of his starting box. Hence the reason I wrote to fire at range at anyone I can see and to take cover against any ranged attacks coming my way. How would I take cover if I am out in the open like you have placed me? The idea here was to stay in my starting box, lob some arrows and use the formations by my starting location for cover, and only go to melee if someone came after me there....not run out to meet them.

I fully expected to lose this fight from the start...so if you feel that you do not wish to make a change here, so be it. But moving out of the starting location was never my intention...I guess maybe I'll have to be more blunt when I write tactics next time, instead of just implying it.

Hey, a fight that almost went exactly as planned. Haven't seen one of those in while. Couple of comments (none fight-altering):

Eraca is a she, not a he ;) .

Alana's Wolf knows only two tricks: attack and "back off" (which I presume equates to down). She could not have it follow her unless she pushed it to use the heel trick, a DC 25 handle animal check which uses a move action. Technically she also should have made a handle animal check to have it attack, but since it knows the attack trick thats a free action DC 10 check - she'd only fail on a natural 1 anyway, so not important. (Scratch that, she has a +4 on her animal companion, so no failure chance there, just an auto-success free action.) The following is also no big deal since the wolf did absolutely nothing important anyway.

Knowing that Alana was summoning would have required Eraca to make a spellcraft check. No big deal since you opted to use the poisoned arrow anyway.

Please add Eraca's used arrows to the used items - I count 6 hits and 3 misses, so 6 auto-lost arrows and 3 with a 50% survival chance.

Not sure what they were thinking, trying to use a summon vs Eraca when she can cast Prot. Evil. Just for thier reference, summons can't be directed to do anything on the detail level they wanted to unless they're intelligent - an int 2 Hippogriff would just do as the spell says and "attack [thier] opponents to the best of its ability." It couldn't be ordered to grapple (since thats not one of a Hippogriff's typical combat tactics), and most definitely couldn't be ordered to provoke an AoO before trying to grapple to avoid having it cancelled.

Eh no issues... although for the future I'm putting never surrender under any circumstances in all my characters tactics. The goal for Loquan is to spend as little as possible until he hits level 6.

I'll spend the 25gp on a powerstone of synthesete to avoid any issues with blindness though, good idea.

Ouch - tied trip. Not sure what to do there - the SRD/PHB says squat. I'll check the FAQ and errate for something, but otherwise I don't know what to say...

Anyway, a couple of errors that will unfortunately need correcting:

1) The Hippogriff cannot diving charge Korinel. To do so it must be at least 30ft over its target's head, and this arena has a height of only 25ft. It can still do a regular charge, however, so round 6 remains AOK, and the only change to round 7 is lessened damage.

2)Korinel drawing his wand in round 7 should provoke an AoO from both Carcaruva and the Hippogriff (presuming the reduced damage still causes him to draw it).

3) In round 8, the Hippogriff should still be able to act before vanishing unless I'm mistaken. Its just like how other spells only wear off after thier caster's actions - since the Hippogriff acts during Destra's turn, it vanishes after acting. This gives it a chance to do a full attack before he can heal (presuming he still draws his wand after the reduced damage), perhaps killing him.

4) Why was Carcaruva called back? My tactics said to have her attack Danidus only if he was both meleeing me and had no other targets, and she still has Korinel as a target.

And I'll get back to you on that trip problem in an edit momentarily.

2)Korinel drawing his wand in round 7 should provoke an AoO from both Carcaruva and the Hippogriff (presuming the reduced damage still causes him to draw it).

Zevox

a wand is a weapon-like object, and drawing it shouldn't provoke an AoO. Neither does using it, unless I'm mistaken. spell trigger items don't provoke AoO for use.

TM
Afraid not. A wand, though weapon-like in some cases depending on the spell stored in it, is not a weapon (read: items found under the "weapons" sections of the equipment or magic/psionic items parts of the SRD), so it falls under the rule of "move action - retrieve a stored item: AoO - Yes." Spell trigger items do not provoke AoOs when used, true, but I never claimed they did.

Regarding tied trips; I believe the attempt ends without further effect.

To wit, this is what the SRD says: Making a Trip Attack: Make an unarmed melee touch attack against your target. This provokes an attack of opportunity from your target as normal for unarmed attacks.

If your attack succeeds, make a Strength check opposed by the defender’s Dexterity or Strength check (whichever ability score has the higher modifier). A combatant gets a +4 bonus for every size category he is larger than Medium or a –4 penalty for every size category he is smaller than Medium. The defender gets a +4 bonus on his check if he has more than two legs or is otherwise more stable than a normal humanoid. If you win, you trip the defender. If you lose, the defender may immediately react and make a Strength check opposed by your Dexterity or Strength check to try to trip you.

Now, tying is not winning, so the defender is not tripped. Tying is not losing either, so the defender doesn't get a chance to immediately react and trip the attacker. Makes sense, hey?

2)Korinel drawing his wand in round 7 should provoke an AoO from both Carcaruva and the Hippogriff (presuming the reduced damage still causes him to draw it).
I think even staggered Korinel could 5' step away to avoid the AoOs.

Also, please, remember he can rage to survive when low of hp.

Anyway, he -did- have a few extra hp since the Hippogriff can't dive in this setting. But I think he can't 5-step, draw the wand and heal, since a character can't move and 5-step in the same round (right?). He can pull the wand with a standard action, though.

Note that in round 7 Korinel is in melee with the Hippogriff and that means a -4 to hit for Destra (she hits anyway). Destra and her critters keep having some crazy luck with the rolls: two 19s in one round! And then resisting a trip when Dan has a +6 against her...

Lastly, Destra is human. Korinal is a ranger with humans as favored enemies. So Destra takes 2 more hp of damage in round 5. (Dandinus is also human, by the way, so he will also be hit extra-hard if Korinel hits him).

Anyway, a pretty intense fight. Good job, DSugui. They should give you a lot of extra credits for this one

My tactics said to have him attack Danidus only if he was both meleeing me and had no other targets, and she still has Korinel as a target.

Thanks for the feedback, Zevox.

1)The SRD says about dive:
A dive attack works just like a charge, but the diving creature must move a minimum of 30 feet and descend at least 10 feet
So, the hyppogriff can make a dive, since he moved 30 ft and descended 10 ft.

2)As TM said above, wands are weapon-like objects - I think of that as carried striped on the belt, not stashed in the backpack or in a pouch, for example. So I don't think it would provoke an AoO.

3)I understand the spell duration of 1 round/level as giving 4 rounds for the summon (or any other effect) to act. The hyppogriff acted on rounds 4,5,6 and 7 (4 rounds), vanishing on round 8. The same I always apply to all effects - Korinel's Shield of Faith, for example, will end on his action at round 12, as will Destra's or her action (the spell took effect on round 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 and 11 - 10 rounds total).

4)Carcaruva was called for 3 reasons: first, Destra would have better chance fighting Danidus with its help than alone; second, in Destra's tactics is specified that Danidus is her primary target; and third, Destra cannot see Korinel so she doesn't know he is in bad shape.

I hope I clarified your concerns. If I am mistaken in some subject, please let me know.

Not quite; doing a 5-step specifically precludes other /movement/ but not actually 'move actions'. There is a difference and this is exactly it; he can five step (free), draw the wand (move) and activate it (standard), assuming he is not staggered.

@Dsugui

Wands are not weapon like objects. Much like scrolls are not. They can produce weapon-like effects (spells), but so can my shoe (improvised weapon). Neither of them is easy to whip out in the middle of the fight. (Rules-wise. Logically speaking, a wand should be easier to get out than a oversized greatsword, but thats logic).

Man, I know I saw that wands were considered weapon-like objects somewhere official (like the FAQ?). Also, it makes common sense: wands and (for example) darts aren't different at all, except for a sharpened metal head on the dart. And that wouldn't make it easier to draw, I don't think.

Well, the only thing the SRD/PHB says on the matter is:

You can only take a single move or standard action each turn (but not both, nor can you take full-round actions).
Nothing one way or the other about free actions like 5' steps, so it could be interpretted either way. I'm inclined to agree with you, however - if disabled characters can take move actions without harming themselves, I'd think something as simple as free actions (which include talking) should still be doable. Just wanted to point out it could be argued otherwise.

Anyway, he -did- have a few extra hp since the Hippogriff can't dive in this setting. But I think he can't 5-step, draw the wand and heal, since a character can't move and 5-step in the same round (right?). He can pull the wand with a standard action, though.
See DSugui's reply - as it turns out it can dive, my memory just stank. For the drawing though I think your misinterpretting here. Drawing items is always a move action. However, 5' stepping does not preclude taking move actions, merely actually moving any further number of spaces (so you can draw/sheath an item/weapon after a 5' step, but not move again). And anyway, if he could and did draw as a standard action, it would reduce his hp to -1 (if he didn't rage), which you wouldn't want. ;)

1)The SRD says about dive:

Ah! Drat my terrible memory. I thought it was 30' vertically, 10' horizontally. If only I had checked that when writing tactics for Asran...

2)As TM said above, wands are weapon-like objects - I think of that as carried striped on the belt, not stashed in the backpack or in a pouch, for example. So I don't think it would provoke an AoO.
See Gonbow's post. Drat, you're right. See TM's next post.

Actually, my tactics said Korinel was Carcaruva's primary target. Relevant quotes:

Vs Korinel (2nd target if I get choice, 1st if hes sniping me): Send Carcaruva to attack him as soon as I see him unless engaged by Famine.
<snip>
If Carcaruva defeats her target, order her either to follow me (“Heel”) or attack her next target (if in sight). Her targets in order are Korinel, Famine, then Danidus, unless Famine closes to melee with me before last. If no other targets are available/in sight and Danidus has closed to melee with me, she will attack him.
You'll also note that the vs Danidus section of my tactics was the only one that didn't mention sending Carcaruva after him. So I'm afraid I must remain adamant on that one - Carcaruva shouldn't have been called back based on my tactics, whether I knew Korinel was in trouble or not.

Also, as a nitpick, if those maps are accurate Destra does still have LoS to Korinel, so she could see he was in trouble.

Found it:

Does drawing a wand from a wand sheath provoke
attacks of opportunity or can I draw it as if it were a
weapon? If I have Quick Draw can I draw a wand as a free
action?
As described on page 142 of the Player’s Handbook, the
“draw a weapon” action also applies to weaponlike objects
carried in easy reach, such as wands. (The Sage would suggest
that magic rods and staffs also fall into this category.) Thus,
drawing a wand doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity, and a
character with Quick Draw could draw one as a free action.
Wands and rods (but not staffs) also fall into the category
of “light or one-handed weapons” for the purpose of drawing
them in conjunction with the Two-Weapon Fighting feat (see
page 142 of the Player’s Handbook)

Found the "tie" thing, too. I was mistakenly thinking back to the grapple rules.

In the PHB, Step 3 of the "Starting a Grapple" section states that in the case of a tie, the combatant with the higher grapple check modifier wins. If this is a tie, roll again to break the tie.

That's what triggered in my memory. Seems like it would be a good way to handle trips, though, too...

Yup, the critter could make the dive attack on round 6 (the outer rim is 10' over the rest of the room, after all) but in round 7...

The hippogriff flies up and dives at Korinel again [Full] but misses
[19+6+2(dive)=27 vs AC 25 hit, damage 1+4+8=13]
I doubt it can do that. The Hippogriff is already at Korinel's side, and a dive is like a charge, so it can't leave, move 30', climb 10', turn around and dive. A charge allows for no turning at all. Therefore I don't think Korinel took extra damage from that attack.

Yeah, I know that... but that was a situation you have not foreseen. Entangle was the only way to Destra fight Danidus the way you wanted: at distance. That moment was critical - if Danidus failed his save, he would be in big trouble; if he saved, Destra would be. It was a 50/50 chance, and the dice gods favored Danidus on this one...

Edit: After looking at the fight....there appear to be some attacks missing:

Round #5

L Starts at (11,-3) mounted on Rhonda with bow in hand. She just heard her opponent in square (22,4) so she readies an action to shoot if she hears casting.

B: Starts at (15,17) with scroll in hand. He casts Mage armor from his scroll. His casting is heard and he draws a scroll of shiled while moving to (16,20). His movement is undetected.

L: (11,-3) (64/64)
B: (15,7) (20/49)(2/15 spell levels) (Invisibility Ends 71) (Nondetection Ends 7 hours) (Polymorph ends 74)(Mage armor Ends 1 hour)

Round #6

L: Starts at (11,-3) mounted on Rhonda with bow in hand. She heard casting among the pillars to the north, so she stays put and readies to shoot on casting again.

B: Starts at (15,17) with scroll in hand. He casts Shield from his scroll. His casting is heard and she thinks he is at (15,20). He then moves undetected to (20,16, 30’)

L: (11,-3) (64/64)
B: (15,7) (20/49)(2/15 spell levels) (Invisibility Ends 71) (Nondetection Ends 7 hours) (Polymorph ends 74)(Mage armor Ends 1 hour)(Shield Ends 26)

Round #7

L: Starts at (11,-3) mounted on Rhonda with bow in hand. She heard casting among the pillars to the north, but cannot get over there and ready an action, so she stays put and readies to shoot on hearing her opponent.

B: Starts at (20,16,30’) with nothing in hand. He casts Shield of Faith from memory. His casting is heard, and Lissa thinks he is at (21,15). He then moves undetected to (21,6) while drawing a scroll of hold person.

According to your CoCo rules you will be unable to recover spell levels with the pears of power only the spell is recovered and can be used again without spending spell levels. Thus you'll have to cast from a scroll.

In all three rounds quoted above, Lissa is readying vs hearing her opponent.. In all three rounds, the text and links states that Lissa heard him. Yet, in all three rounds, there are no readied actions being triggered. I think Lissa is owed three rounds worth of attacks there. Or is there something I'm missing?

Looking at the battle maps, it shows Barthleby moving through walls and stuff. I dunno what speed an Avoral has, but even if it flies, it can't fly through walls. This might just be Sauro not using a1 -> a2 -> a3 -> a4 progression in his maps to help show the path the character took, though.

Yea I didn't use the 3 or 4 steps of movement to indicate complicated paths of movement for barthlby in the 4th and 5th rounds. The Avoral has a crazy 90' fly speed, so it is easily able to perform all the moves including the ones in the 4th and 5th rounds where it appears he flies through solid objects. It simply flies around the corners, all you need to do is to think of the maps as indicating the beginning and final positions and ignore the dotted line.

@Anyone and everyone:

Can someone take my fight? I only have one set of the person's tactics here.

Hi Kaigan, here’s my tactics for Borodin vs. Thane. Without taking my spell power into consideration we are roughly equal combatants, with the use of some spells the odds should be in Borodin’s favor. Let’s see if a dwarf can defeat the awesome power of the elves! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thanks for Pitlording!

Goals
Buff a bit, try to paralyze him with hold person and close for melee.

Start of Combat
- Start in back of my box, holding a scroll of longstrider and my shield.
1. Cast longstrider from scroll
2. Cast magic weapon from memory on waraxe.
3. Cast protection from chaos from scroll
4. Cast divine favor from scroll
Move out and close with Thane. If attacked in melee during buffing, protection from chaos can be skipped.

Main Tactic
- I want to close within charge range of Thane and then hit him with a hold person spell. If he fails the save, charge him next round, otherwise just try to close and engage in melee.
- Hack, slash, kill! (but do it in a nice way please)

Contingencies
- If I am severely wounded, use Command ‘fall’ on him, then continue to attack in melee.

General
- Avoid AoO’s triggered by taking 5 ft. steps when threatened and if neccessary.

Notes
Thane has several mistakes, I will post them in prison too:

- His bracers of armor+1 don’t stack with his mithril shirt: AC should be 19.
- His bow only does 1d8 damage, not 1d8+4 since he didn’t pay for a Mighty Bow
- His attack bonus with his bastard sword should be +9 instead of +8 (+3 bab, +1 focus, +4 Str, +1 masterwork)
- His damage with his bastard sword should be 1d10+4 (he mistakenly adds +1 damage from weapon focus)

for the fight: Borodin (Usurpator) vs. Thane (loxodon_punisher) : Kaigan.

This is my last week fighting in the colissium. I will finish DSugui, Huan, and Soullord's quest tonight, and hopefully before wednesday. And I will continue to post in Myrridin's campaign, but once they are done, i'm taking a break.

If loxodon_punisher didn't send you tactics for Thane, you should just have him concede. He doesn't have any defaults, and he doesn't have any past fights to work from. If you don't have time to write up the pro-forma concession, I'll do it for you.

This is my last week fighting in the colissium. I will finish DSugui, Huan, and Soullord's quest tonight, and hopefully before wednesday. And I will continue to post in Myrridin's campaign, but once they are done, i'm taking a break.

When something that is meant to be enjoyable becomes too much work, then you know it's time to quit. So it's been fun.Sorry it's been like that, Kaigan. We'll miss you.

Yep, went exactly as I figured once Destra was down. I'm not so sure that Korinel and Danidus can see each other from thier respective positions to shoot, but it doesn't matter overall since with those rolls Danidus falls without ever touching Korinel even if Korinel gave up his cover.

Anyway, glad thats finally over. Since rounds 1-14 have already been given plenty of time for commenting on and rounds 15-25 are straightforward enough that problems shouldn't exist, I'm going to update Destra. Thanks a lot for running the fight the DSugui (and more so for putting up with my mistakes in the comments - dark, but I made a lot of those :embarrass )!

Riana & Eraca vs. Alana & Amras is up.

If you want to see a team fight, which was actually a 2vs1 fight with the 1 person winning and his partner doing practically nothing, then check it out.
It never occured to me when I was working on my character to make her an ideal partner in a team battle. She moves out of the starting box in the first round of every fight (including this one) which is more than can be said for 98% of the characters in multi-way fights I have seen. She might very well have taken the first 10 rounds of attacks for doing so.

I'm not sure what I should have done differently here. I did not build a speed fighter, I don't think I should be ridiculed for having a slow but steady strategy. I guess I could make a bulls strength expanding grappler or an invisible summoner or a flying archer instead. :yuck:

It is definitely not my fault that no one attacked me, but my character attacked as much as everyone else (hitting as much :) ) except the Rapid Shooting Eraca. I don't count the wolf, that's the only thing it knows how to do, it was the last command given it, and it's much faster than the rest of us. Also, I'm sure you're completely biased towards it, anyway. :P
My partner and I (at her suggestion, in fact) agreed to stay 80' apart at all times, so it's not as though I decided to be 16 squares away from a grand melee in order to be a leech on my team.

It is also not my fault that my partner did a 3d6+6 critical against an opponent with 17 HP.
Next time I will put in my tactics to roll a critical hit. :lightbulb

Thanks for running that. AFAIK nobody likes doing multiway battles, although I guess team is better than FFA or Hunter, IMO. I think team fights would be better if teams knew in which squares they would be starting (but not their opponents specifically) or if they always started in the same box. It would certainly make for a different dynamic.

Hmmm, I think you kept forgetting Korinel's favored enemy are humans (+2 damage on all those arrows) :-)

But I am not sure if it would have made a difference, and certainly I am not going to complain.

Good work with the hardest fight of the week. I think it was an excelent idea to post every 5 rounds to spot the mistakes earlier on, if I ever need to run a FFA I am going to do the same.

I can't believe Korinel won this one. I guess cowardly tactics help. It also helped that Famine got taken out so quickly, with his awesome AC and all around strong character (great at range, melee and hp) he would have been my pick if I had been asked to guess the winner. (Although some expendables would have helped him greatly).

how should i rate this fite? Kaigan (Coralias) vs StoneTree (Cornalius): Funnymanmike [ECL3]

i do not consider it a win, beacuse kaigan was not even scheduled to show up, so beacose of someone elses mistake i belive he should not have to take a lose?

HOWEVER, that being said its only monday, and i can still have a fight up by the end of the night, if i can just toss StoneTree up against a monster, CR3

i PM'ed the Pitlord account over the weekend asking a very similar situation, and haven't received a responce.

if i can get a few other pitlords to back me up, and if StoneTree is cool with the monsterfight, then i will have it up by midnight est tonight

i PM'ed the Pitlord account over the weekend asking a very similar situation, and haven't received a responce.

The correct account is Pitlords (with an 's' on the end). If you didn't send your message to that account, you may want to try again.

It seems a little last minute to change someone's arena fight to a monster fight, but as long as you can get new tactics from the player, it doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

In your case a simple:
"If its clear that only Eraca is beeing attacked, dont use TD and/or FD"
could have changed a lot.

*shrugs*
You know how it is on CoCo: if you want a tactic used you have to use words like "always" and "never" because otherwise after the fight you will be on the boards arguing about the tactics. You may notice we are not in disagreement about whether my tactics were followed (90% of CoCo arguments).

What happens when Eraca goes down on the first attack of a round (example: a critical) and there are 3 summoned allies and then Riana receives the next 6 attacks before her initiative and now she is not at FD/TD AC because it was "clear" that she wasn't being attacked on the previous round? And then what if they hit by a margin of 2 to 5 and if Riana had been doing TD/FD they would have missed? Maybe the first attack was the wolf's trip and made Riana prone so all of her opponents received +4 to hit and all hit and so she dies...but the wolf's attack would not have hit if Riana had been FD/TD?
You can't tell me you've never seen this situation before.

As soon as I say "if it's clear that ____" we must be prepared to get into a disagreement about what is clear and what isn't, how my character knows what is clear, at what point in time does it become clear to my character, and whether my character can even know/see/hear/sense what is clear. Or then I have to give follow-up instructions on what is clear or not clear.
Fighter: "Well on this round it seems clear to me that they were only attacking Eraca, why didn't you do X?"
PL: "It wasn't clear to me" or "I'm not sure it was clear to your fighter" or "you didn't define what 'clear' meant so I did Y instead."
Fighter: "But Y got me killed, you should have done X."

It is very easy when you are pitlording to look at a fighter's build or tactics and say 'Oh, they should have done this' but that is because you have all the information and where you don't have the information, you get to create what you need to make the fight work.

When I am facing 3 opponents, it seems that the most likely outcome by far is that at least one of the 3 opponents will attack me. Especially when I move into the center of the arena looking to engage on the first round while everyone else is busy buffing and hiding. I wrote tactics for that.
This was a 4 person/team fight. There were 1000000 combinations of events that might have happened. My tactics were originally over 5000 characters long, and I had to edit them down to under 5000.

I can see where the PL, having all the information and perfect hindsight, might feel that tactics could have been better, but I guess I don't see why a participant should be publicly shamed for that.

This fight is done but as I was posting I realized that one of my fighters edited their sheet today several hours before I posted the pre-fight.
Mizay Alamak (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=8378730) Last edited by Katana : Today at 08:23 AM. Reason: updating

If it had taken place after pre-fight character sheets were up, I couldn't care less. If it were a truly new member with only their 2nd (real) fight, I would also be inclined to let this slide. Whatever changes he made could not have possibly affected his opponent's tactics as written.
Then again, Anaconda/Katana is not technically new to CoCo, and IIRC was told about this before. But I may not recall correctly.

So, what is the rule here? Is it up to me or to his opponent?
Given said rule, what is the general opinion of elder-types and veteran PLs on this?

As soon as I get this straightened out, the fight will be posted.

He broke the rules he gets slapped. It's very easy to not edit your character sheet after parrings. We all know the rules. LJLJLJ who is the same person as Hubbabubba got hit with this last week in the fight I pitlorded so did Anaconda with his character Raw. I say if you didn't get a copy of the sheet before it was edited and after parrings, then that player looses. Sorry you went through the effort of running the fight. As a PL you'll still get your credit. I'd just post the fight in a Sblock and list the rewards as if it were a surrender regardless of the "fight outcome" you ran.

incase anyone is wondering what the story is here, basicaly Kaigan's character said "Ready for Feb 22" he had no intention of fighting him, and was accidently assigned to StoneTree. I don't want to count it as a loss for Kaigan beacuse he didn't want to fight.

I have some questions on my fight.

1) I don't understand how sissay cast 2 summon nature's ally 2 spells... She can only cast 3 spell levels, and that's 4, right? I didn't see any summoning scrolls on her.

2) Why is Fargon running so slow? With the Run feat, he should be able to run 200(40*5) feet per round, right? On round 4, he moves from 10,8 to 5,26. Even if he makes a square to avoid the dogs, he still only goes 140'.

3)Not that it mattered that much, but isn't my flurry to-hit +4/+4?
Thanks!

I couldn't find in the SRD, so I looked in the DMG and I found this about LoS:

When using a grid, draw an imaginary line from the square the character is in to the object in question. If nothing blocks this line, the character has line of sight (...). If the object in question is actually another creature, measure line of sight from the square the character is to the square that the creature occupies.

So, by RAW, the characters in your example would have LoS to each other, since you can draw a line from one square to another without anything blocking it.

OMG, there are weird fights, but this one...

Here's a question: One can suggest another to go take a nap, but does the victim immediately falls asleep, as in the Sleep spell? I don't think so, the person would drop his weapons and lay down on the floor trying to sleep, but still remaining awake. In this case, can I consider this person helpless? He will be lay down on the floor, with eyes shut, trying to sleep, and then comes someone near him with a big scythe to cut his head off... Well, you got the picture...

Any ideas on this one?

Now now, that's a kind of tilted interpertation. To allow me to slant it the other way (In my own favor, of course ;) ) let me reiterate... I never expected it to be instant. But Clavis is patient, and would simply kick back, maybe have a smoke, and only pull out the scythe when the guy's genuinely asleep. No need to startle the poor guy, decapitation's bad enough.

I probably should have bought some smokes.

Looking back at him, it's quite clear that Clavis isn't actually good for much in the arena. But at least I can make the fights use freakish sets of non-rules!

Next fight, I'm going to psionically suggest bidding our potion supplies in a mid-match poker game. Does anyone have an online poker hand generator for the pitlord to use for that?

One problem: that'd probably wind up invoking the delay penalty rule (if you do not attempt to engage your foe for 10 rounds, aka 1 minute, the pitlord needs to have something happen to force you to do so). In this case the most obvious penalty would be to have the spell stop affecting your foe or to force you to take an attack of some kind against him, and in either case your advantage is suddenly lost.

Donak (Mal-2) vs Leif (Sunwolf): Dracazar [ECL7] up

Well, that didn't go the way I wanted at all. I wanted to be aggressive close with Leif's position as quickly as possible and use active spot and listen checks to shoot at him while he was hiding from me!

I see lots of little errors, but I feel like my entire strategy has been ignored.

The way I intended that situation to go was for me to see the obscuring mist, move into it, complete my last bit of buffing if I wasn't done yet, and start shooting. While Leif is casting spells it's only a DC 0 listen check to hear him, and if I succeed by 20, I pinpoint him. Being inside his mist also means he would be forced to either move into my sight or listen to try and pinpoint me.

Other than that, and you missed using the full attack that Sunwolf pointed out that I should have had (I forgot I moved to BAB 6 this level -- my last fight was run up until 30 minutes before pairings, so I leveled in haste). I don't mind about that, since it wasn't on my sheet.

I'm not asking you to rerun based on my tactics, but can you please give me some suggestions on how to write my tactics so that they won't be misread next time? I thought I had covered this exact situation, but since you didn't see it that way, I must have been unclear.

First of all let me say that I'm available to any type of change, even a rerun on next week or a revenge (direct duel, I'll pay the credits if needed)

If he manages to hide from me while buffing (inside a obscuring mist or the like) hide, buff myself, and wait for him to either reveal himself or be revealed by the delay penalty
Reading this I understand that you would like to:
1) Hide (Donak moved to cover)
2) Buff (Donak used Vigor and Force Screen)
3) Wait (Donak waited near Leif and readied an attack)

If I see an obscuring mist, run inside it and use it for concealment
I read this phrase as as defensive manoeuvre, not an aggresive one.

You missed using the full attack that Sunwolf pointed out that I should have had
I don't think that I have missed that, please tell me in what round I did so.
You can't use the full attack while moving without the horse, I pointed this.

First of all let me say that I'm available to any type of change, even a rerun on next week or a revenge (direct duel, I'll pay the credits if needed)

Nah, I've already fought Leif twice, and lost both times. I don't need to do it again, and I don't want you to rerun the fight.

Reading this I understand that you would like to:
1) Hide (Donak moved to cover)
2) Buff (Donak used Vigor and Force Screen)
3) Wait (Donak waited near Leif and readied an attack)
I read this phrase as as defensive manoeuvre, not an aggresive one.

I guess you're right. The idea I was trying to get across was to attack as much as possible. If he somehow completely evaded location in the first couple rounds, I wanted to move into cover and search for him until I could find him, then attack. I should be more specific about writing to always attack, and not hide if I know where he is.

Instead, I single moved around in the open and waited for him to complete all his buffing and attack me.

I don't think that I have missed that, please tell me in what round I did so.
You can't use the full attack while moving without the horse, I pointed this.

Well, the only round I full attacked seems to be in round 9. I only see two shots noted in the fight. I haven't looked at the rolls, so maybe it's just not annotated in the fight. Nevermind -- You had me use Psionic shot and not Rapid Shot, per my tactics.

Yuo should have written (as you did now):
I want to be aggressive close with Leif's position as quickly as possible and use active spot and listen checks to shoot at him while he was hiding from me!
If I see the obscuring mist, move into it, complete my last bit of buffing if I wasn't done yet, and start shooting. While Leif is casting spells it's only a DC 0 listen check to hear him, and if I succeed by 20, I pinpoint him. Being inside his mist also means he would be forced to either move into my sight or listen to try and pinpoint me.

Said this, I repeat you that I'm at max disposal for you, even with a rerun or a called revenge duel next week.

I didn't write that, because that tactic only works if he actually uses an obscuring mist, instead of doing something else. He owns over two dozen scrolls, and I couldn't write full tactics for how he might use each of them. I tried to cover as much as I could with tactics that that would fit in a single PM and be adaptable to whatever might happen.

I obviously didn't stress the importance of attacking enough in my tactics. I thought I had worded it more strongly than I actually did. I will try to make it more clear in the future. I was well aware that if Leif had time to buff completely and then hunt me at his leisure I could not win the fight.

One minor error from a more complete reading of the fight:
On round 8, I activated the Chain of Personal Superiority, which should have increased my HP from 37/37 to 44/44 (not the 46 on my sheet - I miscalculated)

It wouldn't make any difference to the fight though -- it leaves me staggered at the end of round 15, but it's unlikely that a single shot will drop Leif.

Thanks Macbrea & Erithmu. Mistake on sheet noted. Looks like I need to get the crossbow enchanted so that I can give it a saving throw.

Actually, Erithmu, just noted a mistake. Perius's crossbow gets a saving throw against the warp wood, since it's an attended object and Perius most certainly doesn't want the Warp Wood to work.

(object): The spell can be cast on objects, which receive saving throws only if they are magical or if they are attended (held, worn, grasped, or the like) by a creature resisting the spell, in which case the object uses the creature’s saving throw bonus unless its own bonus is greater. (This notation does not mean that a spell can be cast only on objects. Some spells of this sort can be cast on creatures or objects.) A magic item’s saving throw bonuses are each equal to 2 + one-half the item’s caster level.

Lots to say today:

@Ariel23: The new FAQ has updated rules for grappling. You can now flurry in a grapple for sure, but you also can't crit. Win some, lose some.

Regarding the LOS issue: Take a look at the picture in the PHB on page 139. In the example, LOS is blocked if the line between points goes through a corner of an obstacle. The issue at hand is practically identical, except that it goes through the edges rather than the corner, but the principle is the same. Unless you can draw a line from a corner of one person's square to a corner of the other person's without even touching the edge or corner of an obstacle, there's no LOS. The caption in the picture states this unequivocally.

Regarding Suggestion: Suggestion makes a suggestion. It does not cause any other mental state change. Here's what I would do if this happened while I was on watch:

Psion: "You feel sleepy. Take a nap."
Opponent: "You're right. I think I'll lie down right here." Lies down.
Psion: Patiently waits. A minute passes and the delay violation kicks in. It slaps the psion only, since the opponent is magically compelled to do nothing.

How long does it take the average person to fall asleep after lying down on a hard, uncomfortable surface? Ten minutes at best? Half an hour? I'm an insomniac so I don't know, but I imagine it would take a pretty darn long time.

Re: Uilo vs. Perius: It's difficult but possible to cast SNA on the wing with average maneuverability. You only have to move half your speed every round to maintain flight. So you can move and begin casting one round, and move and finish casting the next. Takes two standard actions as opposed to one full-round one, but it works.

@King Uther: Thanks for a nice fight. Just one major issue and some minor, technical comments:
·Major issue: Zevox asked to sunder Aerryl's shillelagh if she was using it. He unfortunately has a pretty decent chance of succeeding. Of course, even if that does succeed, he has slim chances of damaging her, and she'll switch to the bow once Magic Fang wears off--and he didn't ask to sunder the bow. So that will likely serve only to extend the fight. I'll leave it to Zevox to decide whether it's worth it.
·Please link the fight to the setup.
·Sound does not always travel in a straight line. It causes compression waves in all directions and echoes off of objects. So hiding behind a Silence spell is only partially effective--40' blindsense won't be able to pinpoint you, but if you can draw a 40' line around the silence effect between the bat and the hider, the bat will know that there's someone there somewhere. And anyone can make a Listen check unimpeded in such a case--you don't need LOE to hear someone. Of course, the hider can always just forego casting and step into the Silence if they see the bat coming.
·The shillelagh was a club, not a quarterstaff--you ran it right, I think, but if it were a quarterstaff it would do more damage but disallow a shield.
·Starting in round 10, the maps are on the wrong map.

@King Uther - I'm kinda peeved at the way you used the 10 round delay rule to break my tactics. Just because I failed casting Minor Image doesn't mean I wasn't interacting, it means I tried to interact and FAILED. Should there really be a penalty for that? And at the worst, a delay penalty would involve thrown beer bottles and popcorn which would HINT at TWH's position. Popping his invisibility was an extremely sub-optimal choice, IMO.

If you don't feel the same way, that's cool. The entangle would probably catch TWH anyways, and he still wouldn't escape its clutches. I just feel that it was really worthless to blow 9 rounds of kick arse buffing with a long bow shot. What a waste.

The fight looks well run, for all of that.

Oops. Everything can be fixed, but the sunder attempt may add some problems. We shall see...

Edit:

Sunder attempts(adding 4 to Asran's attacks): 13, 23, 16

Resist sundering for Aerryl: 25, 13, 17 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=399953)

Damage to club: 16

Club gets sundered, however, with mending(there is one round Aerryl does nothing), the club is ready to kill Asran the next round.

Niva (Luni) vs Namara (Usurpator) is up... a really quick battle!

Thanks for running it Turin. The odds were stacked against Niva, best thing she could do was indeed just engage and hope for a lucky crit (and a few poor rolls for me). But as Kitaya vs. Jonathan last week showed me, even a one in a thousand chance can still happen.

ATTENTION

@TM

Under no circumstances would Aerryl have come into range for any of your attacks. Ever. Unless somehow Aerryl ran out of arrows. I wasn't trying to mess you over, but the bow was the only weapon I saw that could effectively cover the distance.

Even if you didn't attack, and the crowd hinted at your location, then you would've been trapped in the entangle effect for 18 rounds[When I rolled a nat 20]. So even if, for some reason, you didn't get faerie-fired and remained invisible, invisibility would only have 1 round left, and you would have to move out of the entangle effect on the turn it left you. Not to mention all he would have to do is recast the spell. Rolling a low save in 15 rounds seems very likely[But even so you could break out in 11 attempts].

Your strategy was solid......if your opponents wanted to melee you. Aerryl was afraid of a sneak attack+quick death, and wisely chose to remain in flight above the statue. If minor image was there you'd still be entangled, then likely lose concentration(unless you opted to never try and escape).

I really feel I did the best I could based on where the fight went. However, I did do something wrong. You had mirror images up, which would have been attacked first.

Attack scheme follows this pattern:

Round 13: Hits TWH (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=399991) 8 damage
Round 14: Image 2 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=399993)
Round 15: Image 3; TWH (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=399994) 11 damage
Round 16: TWH (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=399995) 6 damage
Round 17: Image 3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=399999) TWH (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400000) 6 damage
Round 18: Last Image (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400001)
Round 19: All misses
Round 20: TWH, for the kill. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400001)

If you have a rebuttal, or something I might've missed, please bring it to my attention. I always have an open ear and will do my best to change things if they need to be.

Woooo!

Does anyone know the damage of a flask of acid taken internally, as opposed to splashing it? How about replacing someone's neat's foot oil with greek fire? Would the leather armor, subsequently lit, burn unusually hot because it's been cured? How about replacing your socks with caltrops?

And of course, one day---DANCE OFF!

Wait, the armor check penalty would make me lose instantly.

Still.

Ugh... I forgot Warp Wood could affect my axes, or multiple objects for that matter. That really screwed my chances with Aeryll's AC, and those rolls didn't help at all.

Just one question KU - shouldn't Aeryll need to roll a SR check for the Warp Wood? I know the spell doesn't technically target Asran, but I was under the impression that objects on his person would recieve the effect of the SR (or at least the object hes holding). I know the odds of him failing it are low, but it could make a difference if he did fail it (okay, not likely, but just maybe...).

Edit: Actually, just noticed several other things to point out. Round 8, Aeryll's attack should not hit Asran. She rolls a 23, and Asran's AC is 26 (20 + 4 shield [Force Screen] + 2 deflection [SoF]). Thats 10 damage prevented, [s]allowing him to survive the natural 20 in round 9's AoOs. See Edit 2 - that may not even happen.

Also, none of the attacks vs Asran roll a miss chance for the Darkness special ability (20% chance of missing, though this also applies to Asran's attacks).

Also, as MindWandererB pointed out in his tactics, Aeryll's attacks with Shilliehglelllll.... her magic club should be at +8, not +9, though I don't see any instance where it affects anything.

Edit 2: Also (man I'm using that word a lot), the sunder attempts would be at +8 of my rolls - +4 for Hell's Cleaver being two-handed, +4 for Improved Sunder. That means the second attempt succeeds since he rolled a 21 damage on that attack (so no natural 20 AoO for Aeryll that round - in fact, now that I think of it, wouldn't that other attack that I mentioned should miss not happen due to the sundering as well? Man, this just gets more and more complicated...), so Aeryll needs to mend it again, giving Asran another shot at sundering it, this time permanently since she'd be out of mending spells.

Edit 3: All that said, if you don't have time to edit all this in before the deadline (perfectly understandable), I'd be okay with keeping the fight as is. Like I said in my tactics, I never expected to win it anyway, and I absolutely hate having fights held over.

Also, Asran earns only 8% for the EHTC, not 10%, since he has the two Fury allies. That gets upped next week with the change in tax rules, but for this week its just 8%. Please also add his free activity - teaching Wrath the "defend" trick.

@Ariel23: The new FAQ has updated rules for grappling. You can now flurry in a grapple for sure, but you also can't crit. Win some, lose some.

Let me point out that what is quoted in the FAQ does not change any of our rulings about scoring a crit in a grapple. The FAQ states that you cannot crit on a grapple check. This is 100% true and we have always played this way, because a grapple check is not an attack role.

The FAQ mentions nothing about scoring a crit on the initial touch attack. Thus, our rulings on the subject won't change.

And yes, for those that missed it, you are once again allowed to perform grapple checks as a part of a flurry, as per the most recent FAQ. This is the lone exception to the rule that allows a PC to make a grapple check for each attack they receive from their BAB. In the case of a monk, the number of grapple checks able to be performed in a round is determined by their FoB attack routine. This change is effective tomorrow.

Guys I'm really sorry but I won't be able to get my fight done. School work krept up on me. I appologize again for being late but I was trying to get the fight done but can not.

here are the tactics for anyone who may take it

AlagarThese are the tactics of Alagar, brother of Angosh vs Evaine Dreamseeker. The lasttime we fought I did 70hp worth of damage to her and she did 0 to me. Let's try to do that again.

Starting:
Alagar will start behind cover, holding a powerstone of Energy Adaptation, Specified. Let's bring in the horse for fun, put in an adjacent square behind cover.

Buffs:
1. Psi-like ability Invisibility 40 rounds
2. Psi like ability Expansion 400 rounds
3. Energy Adaptation, Acid, 30 rounds, draw Bite of the Wolf
4. Bite of the Wolf, 20 rounds, draw Force Screen
5. Force Screen, 20 rounds, draw Vigor
6. Vigor, 20 rounds, draw Skate
7. Skate, move out drawing Spiked Chain, skip Skate if Evaine is grappled

The idea:
Trip+kill. Engage at 10' ro I threaten either side to prevent any retreating.

Alagar will find Evaine, using his spiked chain to trip while raging, +11 touch, +14 trip, follow-up attack, +15, 2d6+10 damage.

Full-attack: +9(13)/+3(+7) 2d6+10/1d8+3

It's simple, easy, and works.

Purpose of the horse:

When Evaine makes herself known and comes to the square with the horse, the horse will begin to grapple Evaine[the horse has the grapple trick]. +4 touch, +9 grapple. The idea is to occupy her for the time being, perhaps save some expendable money. If the horse begins to grapple Evaine, and I am already expanded, forego all buffing and beat the living tar out of Evaine, tripping and attacking while she remains grappled.

Contingencies:
1. Win

EvaineMar 22 Evaine vs Alagar (King Uther)

Prebuff/pre-fight
Prebuff my guisarme and 2 arrows with Dissolving Weapon.
Begin play "behind" a rock with caltrops in hand.

Rounds 1-3
Vigor for 4 PP = 20 HP (6 PP remain)
Biofeedback from crystal (2 PP remain)
Force Screen from crystal (1 PP remain)
[Use 5' steps to maintain cover based on Listen checks]

On the extremely rare chance that Alagar does not go Invisible, put up Skate as soon as possible and begin moving and firing. Finish buffs at a safe distance and fire when all buffs are complete.

Until Alagar becomes visible
1) Skate from crystal (crystal expended)
2) Go to Total Defense (it protects against a second attack, if any).
3) Start dropping caltrops 10' apart (he's Large). Using Listen, try to keep caltrops/rock between myself and opponent.
4) Draw bow if still not engaged and out of caltrops.

RANGED
If I survive his alpha strike, Withdraw 90' and begin a pattern of withdrawing and shooting, with the emphasis on staying away, not shooting. Some of his buffs will go down before mine, which makes it worth being extra conservative for 20 or so rounds.
[Also, he is -2 to hit with his bow if he's large.]
RUN may occasionally be necessary. After initial contact, I don't ever want to be within 10' again.
When possible, return to the area of the caltrops and stop at his double move +10', encouraging him to charge through them.
Use arrows-->cold iron arrows-->silver arrows. (In order of cost)

If Alagar is obviously mounted forget the ranged idea unless his horse somehow hits a caltrop.
Ignore his horse at all times if Alagar is visible. If Alagar is invisible, then attacking the horse is optional.

MELEE
If trapped in melee, use the guisarme as long as he is using his chain. (And get out of melee ASAP!)
If it is disarmed (AOO) or Sundered, draw the sword. Charge the sword with 2 PP before making any attack roll on Alagar.
If the guisarme is disarmed and he keeps taking 5' steps away to 10' distance, then take 5' steps to maneuver in such a way that I can take a 5' step from 10' to 15' distance and grab my guisarme with no AoO.

TRIP
If I'm tripped and at 10' distance, Withdraw by crawling 5', standing up, and moving away the rest of my movement, preferably behind cover.
If I'm tripped and at 5' distance, continue to attack from the ground until he moves to 10'.

HEALING
Vigor is Evaine's healing. PP should be spent for this purpose when she is at 20 HP or below.
In a close fight, Evaine may drink her CLW potion at 15 HP or below as long as doing so does not provoke an AoO.
Don't use expendables in a losing effort.

Use my default tactics where there are gaps. If there are still gaps, you can improvise or use my tactics from this fight
http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8675413
although I doubt it will be much help.

My Power Points:
Crystal 3 PP
1 for Biofeedback
1 for Force Screen
1 for Skate

Reserve 10 PP
4 for Vigor
2 for sword (if necessary)
2 for more skates (if possible)
Unused PP for miscellaneous (Vigor, saving throws, resilience)
If I don't end up using my sword or skate (locked in Melee), then use remaining PP for Vigor. Expend Psionic Focus to manifest it defensively for maximum HP.

I realize he will have Acid Resistance, that's okay. Don't manifest Dissolving Touch during the fight.

If Alagar uses his horse (doubtful), keep in mind 2 things:
1) He has no saddle, this is a -5 Ride penalty
2) Animals will not voluntarily attack aberrations unless they have been specially trained to do so (see Handle Animal) and his has not

Thanks!

1) I seemed to have overlooked that. Damn. I'll edit that, if you wish.

2) I decided to put you behind cover because that way you would have recieved cover from the dogs. Plus, I didn't want you to move into basing with Sissay because that would have provoked. So, cover seemed the most logical option.

3) At 3rd level, the flurry bonus is +0/+0. So I believe that your flurry is, indeed, +6/+6.

The table that you are looking at already has the BAB of the monk worked into it. Her flurry would be +4/+4, a -2/-2 penalty as per the flurry ability at level 3.

If she were level 5 with a flurriable attack that is normally +6, it would become +5/+5 in the flurry (a -1/-1 as per the ability).

If she were level 9 with a flurriable attack that is normally +6, it would become +6/+6 in the flurry (no penalty at this level, as per the ability).

Provoking an Attack of Opportunity

Two kinds of actions can provoke attacks of opportunity: moving out of a threatened square and performing an action within a threatened square.
Moving

Moving out of a threatened square usually provokes an attack of opportunity from the threatening opponent. There are two common methods of avoiding such an attack—the 5-foot-step and the withdraw action.
Performing a Distracting Act

Some actions, when performed in a threatened square, provoke attacks of opportunity as you divert your attention from the battle. Actions in Combat notes many of the actions that provoke attacks of opportunity.

Remember that even actions that normally provoke attacks of opportunity may have exceptions to this rule.

Does basing Sissay really promote an AoO? How? How would cover protect me from the dogs, who can only attack me in melee? Woulden't it have been better to make sissay make a concentration check by basing her, should she attempt to cast a spell? Obviously, she could have struck at me first with her sword, but, she can just take a move action to where I am, and get a first attack anyway. I'm so confused! I see no way how stoping where I did can be advantagious to Fargon, while basing her would have taken away some of Sissays options, or at least force her to make concentration checks should she try to cast spells.

Also, when do you get to make listen checks to try and detect your opponent? It was my understanding that you got to make a listen check every round... is that only when my opponent moves? I'm assuming that a passive listen check, no matter how good, can't hear someone just breathing?

Can you ready spells that take a full round to cast, or only an attack action?

Also, I'm still confused how you get +6/+6 for my flurry. I get (+4 str +0 flurry) for my flurry, and (+4 str, +2 bab) for a regular attack.

Alagar vs Evaine is up.

Couple of moments where it could have gone either way. Some minor mental/tactics errors on each side.

Be kind.

If this goes relatively clean. it will mean we have no hold over 'fights.' Quests maybe .. but no fights

For some reason I completely forgot about the darkness. Completely. I felt as I was running it there was something I was missing, but for the life of me couldn't figure out what it was.

We'll start with the miss chance.

Aerryl's two hits: 67; 58 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400335)
Asran's successful sundering: 100 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400336)

Asran is still alive, and has only taken 18 damage. However, his flight movement makes it so Aerryl gets an attack, an AoO, then another attack before Asran gets an attack. Technically, if his tactics were completely mean, after the first attack you'd never get another, as he could just move to your back every round. But he doesn't.

Attack ratio[Rounds 10-12]:
Aerryl attacks: 24; 21 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400338)
Withdraw(if healing, AoO: 19; 18 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400346) )
Aerryl attacks: 12; 12 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400338)
Asran's attack: 5+9-4=10 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400339)
Aerryl's AoO: 12; 21 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400338)
Aerryl's attack: 16; 17 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400338)
Withdraw(if healing, AoO: 1!; 19+9=28 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400346) Damage: 14-5=9) Miss chance: 38 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400381)

Round 13:
Aerryl attacks: 14; 22 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400341)
Asran attacks: 6+9-4=11 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400340)
Aerryl's AoO: 1!; 19+9=28 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400341) Damage: 13-5=8 Miss chance: 81 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400381)

Asran does have in his tactic to heal when knocked below 13, which means in round 10 he could disengage and heal. If he does, he heals 4 then 2 then 2. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=400352) That means after healing on round 12, the AoO on movement puts Asran at 0. On Round 13, if he heals then he falls, but if he moves he also gets knocked out.

It's my bad for forgetting the darkness, but hopefully this will put it to rest.

Okay then KU, looks good to me. I take it you don't think that Warp Wood needs to make a SR check to affect Asran's weapons, since you didn't mention that?

Edit: Now that I think of it, with those attack rolls, it doesn't even matter if he failed that check. Thanks for running it KU - I'll update Asran and set him to ready again. Need to bring in some income for the EHTC.

Here's what I noticed:
ROUND 10
Caltrops(Alagar is making a single move action and can pick is way through the Caltrops)AFAICT he moved 25' or 30' that round but this is not how Caltrops work: "Taking a single move action" is not the same as "moving at half speed."
By that interpretation, anyone who is entangled (or hurt by Caltrops or in rough terrain, etc) and at "half speed" can take a regular Move of 30' and attack every round in the entangle, as long as they don't try to use 2 move actions.

Reach
Alagar continues his move and strikes at a range of 10ftIf I am at -3,-26 and he is at -2, -22 that is 20' not 10'.
The reason that would matter is no AoO = his miss would go on his next AoO.

ROUND 11
If he is charging in Round 11, how is he picking his way through the Caltrops?
His touch AC is only 10, so 1-2 rounds through the caltrops could make an enormous difference. The only way to beat builds like this is to get nowhere near them.

prebuff
I have a lot of questions about this. For now I'll put them in the FotW but they may end up in the Tavern so I can get a better idea.
I had no idea you couldn't change your prebuff according to your opponent. I don't doubt you but I have to ask, does this mean if you have default tactics on your sheet, you have to use those, too, no matter what?
Would I be better off getting rid of all the prebuffs (and/or defaults) on my sheet...?
What if I say, "Don't bring my ally" but that's not on my prebuffs? You get to determine which allies you bring in after being paired but you can't decide which spells to cast or powers to manifest?
If I have leadership (or a Thrallherd) can I have my 50 followers pre-buff me before every fight and then decide which allies to bring? If they don't come do I get to keep their buffs?
Actually all of these questions are serious (as serious as we get in this place, anyway ) but that one is, as well, because my next character is going to be a Thrallherd.

As the rules stand, you have to choose your prebuffs ahead of time, but you can take all the time in the world after you know your opponent and before you fight to leave or take armor from home and choose allies. I can't imagine any realistic explanation why you would have time to go home and put on your full plate armor, but you couldn't spend a round manifesting Dissolving Weapon.

I am advocating for more than 6 months now to make allies and equipment a prebuff.

1. Equipment that is listed under At Home stays at home.
2. If you have several suits of armor, or duplicate equipment for limited slots, you must prebuff that.
3. If you want to bring allies, list them in advance.

This has several advantages:

A. It makes writing tactics easier because you know what to prepare for.
B. It does not allow for 'surprise switches' of equipment and allies, which really has nothing to do with writing good tactics or making a good character build, but everything with abusing the fact that your opponent cannot alter his tactics to react to the unexpected situation.
C. Allies are powerful, too powerful in CoCo for what you have to sacrifice to get/use them (just look at the new Balbanes, he is maximizing most possible ally abuses in the CoCo), the mandatory prebuff will curtail this power somewhat.

A map for your viewing pleasure:

Alagar in red, you in Blue, caltrops the other three colors.

re: Rnd 10: Alagar makes a single move, using double movement while moving through the caltrops. Under the Caltrop description, a PC may do so and avoid any attack. (please note the error in location from the Fight thread, and where Alagar is on the map, he should be at (-2,-23) It is my mistake)

Re: round 11: from the map above you move westward to a point almost directly west from which Alagar does not have to cross the Caltrop path.

As a side note: Whenever I pick up a fight where tactics have been posted in the FotW thread, I feel that I am not able to PM the gladiators in errors of their tactics, I would have mentioned to KU that his horse was going to be useless, and I would have mentioned to you that I was going to take your standard prebuff, which may have made you change if you manifested DW on a pair of arrows. Also as the fight is dropped in to my hands at the last minute, they become somewhat tied. If you still have problems with this fight I recommend a hold over. Wednesday is unfortunately my longest day of classes and I won't get time to edit the fight till after next weeks pairings are done.

@usurpator
I'm with you. Although to a certain extent, I don't care what is decided as long as the results are consistent.
I'm not sure I understand why my opponent can break into my house and mess with my equipment before a fight but I can't, and I have a key to the place!
In any event, I am all for knowing as much beforehand because it makes writing tactics easier.
Simpler tactics submitted earlier = happier pitlords and fights completed sooner.
Happier pitlords and quicker fight turnaround = happier players.

As for prebuffs...you are not using anything that your enemy does not know you have. In the case of my fight (which I am not arguing about the prebuffs) Alagar would know that Evaine could prebuff Dissolving Weapon.
So it's not essential to know that she is doing it and which weapons she put it on.
Then again, I don't care if he knows and if it makes tactics easier, that sounds good to me.

@erithmu
Thank you the map helped a lot.

I don't have a problem with the prebuff thing. I knew he had resistance to acid, so an average Dissolving Touch would have only done 4 HP, and even then, Evaine is not good with a bow. The only reason I cared about prebuffing (used very loosely) is that those prebuffs are "free" so it would be dumb not to take them.

re: Rnd 10: Alagar makes a single move, using double movement while moving through the caltrops. Under the Caltrop description, a PC may do so and avoid any attack. (please note the error in location from the Fight thread, and where Alagar is on the map, he should be at (-2,-23) It is my mistake)
If I am reading this correctly, he took a double move and attacked.
Either that is impossible, or he charged while "carefully picking his way through caltrops" which would also be impossible. Even if he were allowed to charge, he would have to stop in the first/closest threatened square, which would be 20' away.

I'm editing my sheet right now as ready and putting down the loss, but I would still like to understand how this worked.
MindWandererB

03-29-06, 05:35 PM
@Ariel: the reason why it works is that Alagar only had to move at half speed for one step to get past the caltrops. Counting each step to the southwest, his first step cost 1.5 steps, his second cost (1.5*2) 3 steps, and his third and fourth cost 1.5 steps each, for a total of 7.5, rounded down to 7, or 35 feet. With his speed of 45 with Skate, he can make it easily.
Erithmu

03-29-06, 09:42 PM
@Airel23: What MindwandererB said.

Alagar base move = 20
+10 Barb unnamed
+15 skate enhancement
= 45 ft

If it is any consolation I have to fight him this week.
Ariel23

03-29-06, 11:31 PM
That is very clear, thank you.

Part of the problem is of course we don't really get all the tactical movement. It's just to complicated to outline all that, but at the same time it's difficult to sort of gauge it just by looking at the X,Y.

Like I said, I put it down as a loss, so it was fine anyway, but I appreciate the explanation.

Thank you for not being overly angry with a 'pick-up' pitlord, your questions were within reason and you were curious rather than angry and was able to understand my explinations with follow up questions and acknowledgement. I do what I can when pitlording, however due to my style, sometimes the specifics get left out.
