Fights of the Week: November 1st

Sheets
Deadline for editing characters sheets is 21:00 CET.
Central European Time (http://wwp.centraleuropeantime.eu/) shows the time.
Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions part 1 and part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM Caterane will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Make sure that your character is not in Prison (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=571107&goto=lastpost).

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need, there is a nice Template ready to use that will help.
You could find very useful the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps, You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
Other useful links are Skills and Feats, Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, don't attack pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play and above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

Oh, shucks. Walden's getting a monster fight :(.

Not necessarily true - he could be paired up in an interleague.

Sir Valkin would've been active if it weren't for the 2 guild actions I have to deal with this week, plus Jar-red's fight... I didn't plan on having three characters active - but that's the way it goes sometimes (well 4 if you count the druid I have training...)

Against Sir Valkin- it would be interesting as he could turn you with a turn check of 19 or higher and that's pretty much an auto-loss for you. Since his bonus is only +4 though - he'd probably have to use a fair amount of his 6 available turn attempts...

Nope, none of the ECL 6 characters are active either.

I have to say .... McJarvis ... you now have your work cut out for you with the guild roll ... too much paperwork in getting your guild.

I'll be lurking around here, but I'm on and off vacation for the next two weeks.

Anything special I need to do as a pitlord for a guild interception, or do I just run it exactly like a normal fight?

Thanks,

Who did NiQil and MindWandererB have to bribe in order to get two active characters this week? ;)

I thought we were being limited to one apiece. Or was that just a suggestion?

We'll see about that. I don't anticipate it(guild work) taking too much time out of my Pitlording schedule...and hopefully I'll be able to get a good right-hand-man on the guild side of things once they get going. I already have a plan of attack and everything :D

And you missed my point completely ... Look at the guild effect at the top of the pairings.

Just like a normal fight. But in this particular match, since its between characters of uneven levels, the rewards will be a bit different (theres a couple of tables in the rules to help with that), and the lower level character (Indrithia) gets one surprise round.

Who did NiQil and MindWandererB have to bribe in order to get two active characters this week? ;)

Well, last time a SoE hit we were limited to one apiece plus one for every fight we pitlorded. It seems that isn't being followed too strictly this time, but it would explain MWB at least. Though I technically have quite the number active - granted all but one are because they have to be active for Guild stuff, but even so not counting my campaigner and quester I have 3 plus my uncon character when pitlording only one fight. And I've noticed that my brother has 2 active while pitlording nothing, so it seems its currently being treated as a suggestion.

@ McJarvis - Yeah, that random event just hurt your Guild damn badly before it even got going. Good luck indeed getting going with the EYE's resources and that... ouch.

Anyway, I need to leave for a late class in about an hour, but when I get back I'll roll up Walden's monster and post what he knows about it.

Pairings done

It was still close; only 1 pitlord left and 2 extra fights from McJarvis. I think we're keeping the SoE up for some time.

+7: Vathelokai
+6: Caterane
+3: TheMagister, King Uther
+2: Abyssal, Kaigan, McJarivs, Zevox, Sauro, Mindwanderer
+1: Gonbow, Hirumajoe, hogarth, Krytos, Macbrea, Papa, Telin, Zelck, Pittbull, Niqil
-3: Stormwind

UnCon Finalists: Please do not edit your sheet. It would be too sad if you'd autolose because of that.

No, it doesn't--I'm not pitlording at all. And I actually completely forgot that I set Maya ready for today a long time ago--I meant to only have Kervan active.

@Cat: if it would help, you can nix Kervan's monster fight. I didn't intent to have two characters active, and I'm not entitled to. I'd rather have Kervan active than Maya, but his fight would be easier to remove from the roster.

OH! I didn't see that before...heh. All the same, not really. Before the random event even got rolled(ie- last night) I had already PM'd cat about changing all buildings EYE has because of zoning requirements & LOY technically being a different guild. My changes involved no longer having POL buildings(unless my fortress counts as one) & he told me the change would be approved as soon as I get control of the guild.

Though that certainly was a close call. I'm glad I was anxious to forge forward with things...otherwise the metagame mighta been a factor. :-O

edit- double upkeep? that isn't that big of a deal...~100 gp a week out of an income of 2,000 gp a week....I guess over time it might have meant something.
McJarvis

@Hogarth & Dr. Funk

I would encourage you to get your tactics for your fight in asap. I don't particularly like the way forest battles can suddenly extend to 6 hour pitlord jobs, so I'd rather do that one earlier in the week.

There's a problem with that: Your first structure (The Class A one) has to have the same primary trait as your guild. That's a restriction we all had to follow, and LOY isn't going to get out of it.

@Abyssal: Tactics for Maya sent. Stupid Deeper Darkness stealth builds.

Cat must have either been mistaken or is taking pity on a small guild then, because in his pm response to my requesting changing the class A building(Specifically- I asked for a Bard college LEI/EDU) he said I could "change anything I want".

Thanks! It will change my strategy alot if I can't get that bard college.

The double upkeep or no money thing- is that a for 1-week only kind of thing for the no-money deal?(ie- pay double upkeep forever or gain no money for 1 week)?

Here's the full rule:

Strike: All structures of <random> trait do not produce any income unless the guild permanently doubles the upkeep for each affected structure (announce as Free Action). After three weeks, a strike turns into the Random Event "Rioters" and half the staff leaves the guild.

So if you don't increase the upkeep, they produce nothing for 3 weeks. After that, they produce again, but you lose half the staff and you gain rioters in your home district! Unless you miraculously get EL 5 rioters, you're in pretty big trouble.
McJarvis

So basically the only option is to increase upkeep. At a cost of ~1k gold a week per building it would take more than 20 weeks for the upkeep to equal the money I would have lost, and the opportunity cost of the 3k per building is pretty invaluable...plus by the time 20 weeks has gone by, I feel like I should be getting significantly more income so the upkeep will seem like even less.

This will likely be more like a speed bump.

Will LOY's second(grade B) building even be affected by the rioters? It has no staffing and only got completed this week.

Even if it's a POL structure, I'd say no. It doesn't actually become "active" until next week. And I don't think you're making it a POL structure, anyway, are you?

Edit: I hope you mean the strike. If it does devolve into a riot, yes, even your guildhall will be affected.

I'm a political-leisurely guy. I don't know the difference between a strike and a riot ;)

I don't know at this point if I'm thinking of a pol structure for my grade B. I was kind of resting alot of hopes/dreams on investing in EDU buildings & LEI activities. there are no options for me along EDU routes now, so I need to figure out a backup plan before the guild gets posted tomorrow. :)

Well, like I said it wouldn't have been something I would have chosen on my own. I like being able to roll random encounters for the guild miniquests - it enables combinations that I wouldn't choose on my own.

And this is certainly one of them. I just hope it isn't too easy/too deadly - as with most things - it could go either way...

@ Telin - So be it. I'm mostly just remembering a combination of Destra's quest (fights with tough monsters with no time to prebuff, one where she was nearly ambushed, one in a tiny corridor... bad for her, big time) and your reputation (I was around for some fo those that earned it for you - Luni's restraunt run, Feradeth's attempt at joining the CEF, the close calls in the Silver Acorn quest - and I read others). FYI, we may want to add gargoyles to the ECL8 list. There is exactly one monster entry that satisfies the "winged biped medium-sized monstrous humanoid" description on the list (1d3+1 Fiendish Harpies) :P. Although I looked at the list only after I drew up the majority of my tactics, I did check on d20srd's monster filter and it was pretty easy to narrow down what I was facing...

@Kaigan - tactics for Rubicanti are begun, but there is so much to plan for (three allies!!)! They'll be in by Friday deadline, or earlier if I can manage it. I like Rubicanti's chances on the Forest Map vs. a Druid, ironically...

Well, that sucks.

Of course, looking at this I am curious on how someone accidentally poisons himself with injury poison...

Well run.

EDIT - given Undertaker's buffing schedule though - I do want you to make the second saving throw. The first failure is only unconsciousness for 1 minute. Since my opponent has 6 rounds of buffing, and I'm obviously not making any noise... there's a good chance I'd be awake by the time he got to me.

If I fail the second save though - it happens.

EDIT 2 - I guess I should've checked the roller... I apparently failed that save too...

I return to my previous statement: Well run.

Two quote a medical examiner:

Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, State of Maryland, Baltimore 21201, USA.

Accidental, suicidal, and homicidal injuries have been caused by arrows fired from crossbows. To our knowledge, a case of suicide using a full-size compound bow to fire a projectile has not been reported in the English literature. Described is a case of a 17-year-old man who shot himself in the chest with a broadhead hunting arrow fired from a compound bow. Examination of the footwear suggests that the decedent drew the bowstring with his left foot while holding the bow in his hands. The mechanism of injury is discussed. When dealing with a longbow-related fatality, examination of the weaponry used and reenactment of the fatal methodology are critical in determining whether self-inflicted injury is a probability.

PMID: 9539403 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

It is very possible to injure yourself with a poison arrow, but I am thinking it might take a tad bit of force.

The only reason I get to display my prowess in statistics around here is ya'll always get it wrong.

Probability for this particular case:

1/20 (mishap) * 1/2 (first failed save) * 1/2 (second failed save) = 1.25%

Unless you only wanted the probability of him falling sleep for multiple hours, in which case Mac was correct.

A character has a 5% chance of exposing himself to a poison whenever he applies it to a weapon or otherwise readies it for use. The wording 'exposed' here is the problem. I could see it meaning you touch the poison, and thus the 5% chance is fairly irrelevant since injury poison wouldn't do anything. But that dosn't seem to be the intent of the rule (basicly it would make poisonuse special ability's super nerfed). From an RP perspective, I imagine it as cutting your finger for less than 1 hp of damage.

Crap. 3 losses in a row? That's rough.

It's totally my fault for this one, I sent the wrong power in my tactics, but I actually do have offensive precognition and not offensive prescience.

I know I always confuse the two, and I sent you the tactics after a 75 hour work week in Japan... it was about 12 at night when I sent them. I MEANT to increase my ATTACK rolls, not my damage. Oh well, I don't know if it would have meant much in the end anyway.

I will accept the results of the fight as it was run, as it is my error, but is this the sort of situation that typically makes for a rerun?

The attack roll wouldn't have made a difference: your touch AC behind cover was 15+2(potion)+4(cover)+1(dodge)=22 and he NEVER rolled even a total of 20 on your touch AC with an energy ray. The bad luck really hurt him (8.6 avg on 19 d20 rolls).

As for the Free Activity income:

You haven't got 5 ranks in it yet, because you're only a 1st level character.

AFAIK, you have to invest 5 ranks into a Profession or Craft skill in order to make use of it for "free" money.

Not quite. You can always make a tumble check as a reaction to reduce falling damage. Jump checks to reduce falling damge must always be intentional (see the 'jumping down' portion of the skill). Also, if you jump down some of the falling damage you do take is subdual instead of lethal.

You know that Wild Surge ups the ML for SR checks too, right?

It's completely impossible for Perius to get an 11 (let alone a 10) with a 3 level Wild Surged Ego Whip because his total ML for it is 12.

Though given the results it doesn't matter. I forgot about SR in this case or I would have scrapped the Ego Whip route, because I was expecting the pixie to constantly dance out of range of Energy Burst.

I take that not mattering back. It would have prevented the 8 non-lethal and 3 lethal from the following round, which gives another possibility for downing the pixie.

You're right, I missed it. It only matters for the Ego Whip in Round 10, which deals 5 Cha damage. So, you end up doing 14 Cha damage, and I guess you get an extra round. If you try to use another Ego Whip, I just rolled a CL check and you failed it (probably not what you'd do though, even before I looked at the next roll). Although it does save you a turn, and I just rolled a winning xbow shot. Hmm... I'll finish editing it tomorrow morning, but right now, it looks like Perius pulled off the upset and won the archery duel. Any objections, Maraxus?
Ravashack

11-07-06, 12:42 AM
There are only two things that I will argue over in a fight--

1) Complete errors like that Wild Surge oopsie

2) Pitlords that refuse to refocus in order to use Psionic Shot when using ranged weaponry, unless I actually said in the tactics not to. There's no excuse not to at this point in most circumstances when he has to roll a 1 or a 2 to fail, and he nets more damage overall using it. (This is a sore subject; that's why I will argue over it.)

Since you obviously don't qualify for #2 because you HAVE been refocusing with him, you just simply need to add a round in the archery fight.

For #2, you might want to include that in your char-sheet in a visible place (prebuffs is where I put such tactics on my chars, and in default tactics as well). It also can't hurt to just add that line in your tactics. As for #1, I always appreciate it when others point out my errors. I hate it when errors decide the fight, and I seem to make tons of them :embarrass . Anyway, baring any objection from Maraxus, it looks like you won the fight. My roll to see if you had a chance ended up being a crit threat and dealing 15 damage before a confirm, putting Noko to at least -5.

Do what I do: Whenever I write tactics, the first line in my tactics is always "These tactics are in addition to the general tactics listed on my sheet." Then in my general tactics section, I list anything that I want done on a regular basis. For my Horsemen, a big one is to always make melee attacks one-handed, so as not to lose the AC bonus from my buckler. Until I started doing that, I argued with pitlords every week to make them go back and change it after they ran the fight with two-handed attacks. Ever since I started my general tactics section, it has not been a problem.

Wow, looks like I was really lucky on the spell resistence rolls. - But so was Perius on the concentration checks ... no, wait, in round 10, it did not work. The DC for manisesting while damaged is 10+damage+powerlevel, so it would be 21 ... does not matter, since this one was soaked anyway.

What I do have a problem with is, that the bolts don't change the damage type to anything special, so I still get my 10 point damage reduction.

That the monk's belt does not give me the ability to use my unarmed attacks like a monk is really strange, to say it nicely. However, it looks, like this is, how it is written. Obviously, this makes my tactic with flying directly above him rather pointless, but that's my fault. Never mind that.

I kind of have a bit of a system. I got used to updating right as my fight finished. But then again. I am probably one of the most easy going individuals about fight results. I just don't really care to argue each and every call.

If your super competitive this can become very frustrating. Myself, I do it as a hobby. Therefore, I apply my basic knowledge of the rules in such a fashion to produce what I think may or may not be an effective character and let the others worry about the complex stuff. The real goal is to find what is fun for yourself.

My fights will be up either later this afternoon or tonight...

I've run into a lot of work and my girlfriend just came down with a terrible flu, so I'm also taking care of here... but don't worry I have started one of them... but they will be up today.

Sorry for the inconviences.

SKELETONS, MWB.

UNDEAD.

POWERED BY NEGATIVE ENERGY.

HURT BY POSITIVE ENERGY.

Using a wand in combat provokes NO AoOs. 1d8+1 touch attack.
:doh:That wouldn't have helped. The shield+bite was getting me 2 attacks a round, for more damage. Their touch AC was only slightly worse than their regular AC. And they can make a Will save for half. Besides, they had enough HP that I simply didn't have enough wand to pull that off. The MM wand would have been better (no save, no miss), but it would have also been more expensive than it was worth (about 34 charges, 510 gp worth).

And may I also point out that this was an EL 6 encounter. No, I knew that if the skels got just a little bit lucky, they would have pulled it off. Maybe I should have tried turning them--would have succeeded on a 13, and I had 3 tries. Yeah, that probably would have been good.

Rewards: it would be the 750/795, except that we have a rule that you can't earn more XP than your ECL*100 when you lose. So 500/533 it is.

While I disagree with the movement in round 23 and 24 (because I know I am running away - I shouldn't be setting up to run into a wall...), I am satisfied with this result. Well run.

[EDIT] Just noticed you missed that I used a Scroll of Mage Armor (CL1) in round 1 in the summary.

I'll add the mage armor. Thanks.

In regards to the movement, I didn't think too hard about it since Indrithia with burst is just plain faster than Faelto. Everyone was only making double moves, so going around corners and such would have made no difference for that section of the fight. Which reminds me, I need to list the use of burst.
TelinArtho

11-07-06, 01:40 PM
Well, it does make a difference, because if Faelto is not backed up against a wall in round 24 - but still forces Indrithia to double move to get to her - she can withdraw safely without drawing an AoO - that's a big difference.

Also - add in Cat's Grace to the summary too.

EDIT - And like I said - I am fine with it as is - there's no need for further edits. What happened is I should have gone with my initial instinct and enlarged, silenced myself - and then moved to grapple... My loss here is my own fault...

Oh, I see now. Basically use the withdraw action continuously until Indrithia runs out of burst uses. Hrm. Yeah, that would be the smarter thing to do. Which in fact does make a huge difference as you can then continue to keep using the CLW.

Edit: Thanks for accepting it as is.

I'm afraid I can't agree with that, for one main reason: Shreck is not faster. We're both speed 20. Maya can always move closer to the center of the Deeper Darkness--it doesn't give away his exact location, but it narrows it down a lot. Since she's willing to Run and he's not, plus he'll either be moving at half speed to be moving silently or taking a penalty to MS, he won't be able to get away that easily--and if he tries, he'll hit a delay penalty. Since sniping is a full-round action, a significant fraction of his attacks will result in him being the victim of a charge, and only one successful sunder will win the fight for Maya. So, sorry, but I'm going to have to ask you to play this out.

I just ran across something I've never had happen before...

What happens when someone is using mounted combat to protect a mount, but the foe rolls a nat 20?

If the mounted combat roll is high enough to negate the attack roll is there a hit? If the hit stands, can mounted combat be used against the crit confirm in the same attack? Does that require a different roll or does the same roll still apply to the crit confirm?

The feat says:
Once per round when your mount is hit in combat, you may attempt a Ride check (as a reaction) to negate the hit. The hit is negated if your Ride check result is greater than the opponent’s attack roll. (Essentially, the Ride check result becomes the mount’s Armor Class if it’s higher than the mount’s regular AC.)

NiQil, Have you ever seen something like this. I'm sure someone has seen this, but I've just never run across it before.

My interpretation:

The feat says that the check can be used to negate the hit. It does not make any differentiation between a normal hit and a critical hit. So if the ride check is enough to negate the hit, then the attack fails. It doesn't matter if the attack is a critical possibility...if the ride check is high enough to negate the hit based on the overall attack roll, then the hit is negated.

This is similar to Deflect Arrows in this manner. If someone scores a ranged critical hit against someone who has Deflect Arrows, Deflect Arrows would negate the critical hit as long as all conditions for the feat are met.

Bottom line: A 20 is an autohit, but in this instance the Mounted Combat feat can allow you to override the hit if the ride check is higher than the total attack roll as per the feat description.
TelinArtho

11-07-06, 11:16 PM
Hmmm - I would disagree with that assessment - according to this statement:

(Essentially, the Ride check result becomes the mount’s Armor Class if it’s higher than the mount’s regular AC.)

This would imply to me that the Ride check becomes the mount's new AC - not that the hit would automatically negate a critical threat.
NiQil

Hmmm - I would disagree with that assessment - according to this statement:

This would imply to me that the Ride check becomes the mount's new AC - not that the hit would automatically negate a critical threat.
MOUNTED COMBAT [GENERAL]
Prerequisite: Ride 1 rank.
Benefit: Once per round when your mount is hit in combat, you may attempt a Ride check (as a reaction) to negate the hit. The hit is negated if your Ride check result is greater than the opponent’s attack roll. (Essentially, the Ride check result becomes the mount’s Armor Class if it’s higher than the mount’s regular AC.)
Special: A fighter may select Mounted Combat as one of his fighter bonus feats.

It sounds like you might have misunderstood me. I am looking at the bolded line above. In other words, if someone rolls a 20, then it is an autohit, meaning that it doesn't matter what the normal AC of the mount is. So that add that 20 to whatever the characters attack modifier is (I'll use 5 as an example) to get the total attack roll of 25. If the Ride check beats the total attack roll of 25, the hit is negated, and no critical confirmation roll is needed. If the ride check is lower than 25, then the hit is a valid hit, and a critical confirmation roll is rolled as normal, with no ride check allowed on the confirm roll, since the confirmation roll is not a roll eligible to be negated by the feat.

The line in brackets is descriptive text...but by my reading it means the same thing as what I am saying. The total attack roll still has to beat the ride check for the hit to count. Note that I am not saying that a critical threaten is automatically negated. It's still a question of ride check vs total attack roll.

To use a different example, if the roll was a 15 instead of a 20, the roll would have to be higher than the normal AC of the mount before a Ride check is even needed. All the 20 does is take away that requirement because it autohits. A ride check is only needed if the mount is hit, not on every attack made against it.

I didn't misunderstand what you were saying. I am merely pointing out that the sentence in the parentheses make mention that if the roll is high enough it essentially replaces the target's AC. In the case of a Natural 20 - it doesn't matter what the target's AC is - it is an auto hit.

Now, I do understand what you are saying - I just happen to disagree with it. I don't see any clarification in the FAQ or in the Errata, so I am just going to have to defer to a pitlord decision on this one. I can say that in past fights - no one has questioned this before - any attacks on a mount with a rider with Mounted Combat were automatically treated as hits - no matter what the Mounted Combat roll was (I will go back and find some examples - I am fairly sure there are some for Sir Valkin that I can find - since everyone seems to enjoy targetting Foreman...).

However, even if I do find some examples, will that make a difference? Like I said - no one has questioned this rule before - so the fact that it is questioned now makes any example I give now kind of moot.

Ahh....it was I who misunderstood you. I see what you are saying now...interesting. I can see that side of it as well. I guess it would ultimately come down to a ruling from us, then....because reading it your way, the line you bolded and the line I bolded are in direct conflict with each other.

Methinks we are gonna need Sauro's opinion and MWB and Pittbull to chime in on this one...majority Elder vote would rule the rule. I don't necessarily think either yours or mine interpretation are incorrect...just different views of what portions of the feat are more important.

11-08-06, 12:17 AM
Ironically enough the closest example I found was against Silas in round 12... Silas had a 20!+7, 18+7 to confirm vs 19+8 MC. Maybe people didn't attack Foreman as much as I thought.

I'd like for it to be resolved via Elder vote, but in the interest of moving things along, I think Sauro should make a decision for the fight and I will live with that decision (unless Vath comes up and states that he agrees with me...).

So it seams I've stumbled into a tar-pit that has been around for a long time, but we haven't been stuck in before...

I was hoping that this had come up several times before and that there was a generally agreed answer that someone would just reference for me. But my hopes are dashed.

We should probably discuss this in detail at our leisure another time. But for this fight, I've neglected to run it till the 11th hour, I need to make a decision to finish on time.

So I will split the issue down the middle partly in favor of one participant and partly in favor of the other. For this battle the ride check does indeed become an AC for the purposes of resolving attacks against the mount. Thus a natural 20 will hit. That AC is persistent for all rolls associated with one "hit". Thus the 1st ride check counts as the AC for both the 1st attack roll and for the crit confirm.

In this case it means the arrow hits but fails to confirm.

My vote would be favoring the text that Telin highlighted. I agree that it is a bit ambiguous (stupid words like "like" and "essentially"), but I think a natural 20 is an automatic hit against any "DC." whether that's an AC or a Ride check. Only things that can negate a hit without affecting the difficulty of the attack roll, such as concealment or Deflect Arrows, can beat a natural 20.

@Gnome: Tattoos with a range of Personal cost double. You are correct here. My decision was based on a mistake, I thought that Shreck had a base speed of 30 but of course he doesn't have. The fight needs to be run from the beginning as a total rerun. I'll see what I can do but I'm afraid that it is going to be held over. As you probably see, the fight is going to be long and painful. I'll be home around 6pm and my time zone is GMT+2 so that leaves me only couple of hours to get the fight done. There is a small chance that it will be done before the pairings, but I wouldn't count on it. Sorry about the mess, but you probably understand why I made that decision (remembering the fact that I had Shrek's speed wrong).

Not to be nitpicky, but the feat states that the attack has to hit before a ride check can be used to negate said hit. There is nothing in the text you and Telin favor that contradicts this.

What we are basically talking about is that the two of you feel that the Ride check replaces the AC of the mount, and is then compared against this new "Ride AC" to determine if a hit occurs.

I, on the other hand, contend that after the initial attack is determined to hit the normal AC, the Ride check is then used to see if the hit is higher than this check, and then the hit either stands (if yes) or not (if no). A subtle, but distinct difference.

It all comes down to whether you think "the Ride check result becomes the mount’s Armor Class if it’s higher than the mount’s regular AC" is just flavor text or not. I don't. In fact, as a rule, I treat nothing that doesn't appear in a special, italicized flavor text paragraph as flavor text. That's just my policy; YMMV.

Can't say I didn't expect something like that. I rather intended to full attack Jar-Red, though I can see where my tactics were not specific enough/contradictory. It only would have given 4 extra attacks anyway, so it wouldn't have changed much.

Thanks for the run. Question: do these uncon fights count as CoCo fights? Should I add the rewards, etc.? Do I start a new 3FC after this fight, or is this the first fight in the 3FC?

*EDIT* Now that the fight is decided, I feel that I should say I support NiQil's interpretation of the rules. I think the direct sentence (roll ride to negate the already achieved hit) holds more weight than the support sentence (ride check effectively becomes the new AC). Also the fact that the ride check negates a hit after the roll to hit is successful seems important in the wording.

Also, just realized, Valen should have gotten a -12.5% penalty because of his mount. I'll record it as such on my sheet, if you want to fix it in the fight post to 350 xp/ 350 gp, that'd be great. Thanks.
