Just under an hour until end of line. Have fun, be nice, and for those of you in the States....Happy Thanksgiving!

I regret to inform you all that, because of travel, my tactics will be in later than my usual ten minutes after pairings are posted. They'll still probably be among the earliest tactics sent, though... bunch of slackers...
:P

For those of you in the States, happy Thanksgiving. For those not in the USA, eat some turkey anyway. Turkey and sweet potatoes. It's good stuff.

Forget stuffing. It's all about the sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. But to each his own, I guess; it's a day to celebrate eating, so eat whatever you like.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

I want to let my pitlords know that I'll be driving out for vacation this evening, and will not return untill saturday afternoon. Durring this time I won't be able to write tactics for Kracknol or Raskos, but I promiss that I will get tactics to you saturday evening. Please wait for me, I know it's going to be after the deadline, but I won't have internet access untill I return so there is nothing I can do.

sooo... loggin in with this Guildmaster acccount cleared my cookies. I have no flippin clue what my password is for my Ayrynthyn log in. My email provider is giving me crap and i cant reset my password, and my boss is givin me hell and tryin to make me do work and stuff.. ;)
needless to say, i can't edit Talik (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7768842&postcount=530
)

I figure i got 3 options....

suck it up... too bad, and sit out this week
Run with the character as posted (he has enough cash listed to replenish expended gear)
repost talik's sheet under this log in, and throw my self on the mercy of the court.

...option "a" pretty much covers em all. Is there anything else i can do?
*shakes head at self in disgust and thinks frickin newb*

or..
d) Create a new log in, independant from the Guildmaster account, log in with it, repost your existing character under the new login in the character thread, and send a PM to the Pitlords account explaining the situation. Oh...and do it all in about 3 minutes, since deadline is coming up :P
Guildmaster (EYE)

11-23-05, 04:02 PM
yeah i already PM pitlords... i figured that would be more of a logistical nightmare to create yet another account. Im most likely gonna suck it up and sit out, unless pitlords lets me fly as is. Getting my changes in was a pipe dream. Im good with any way this turns out. :embarrass

Well, I got the fight done - but after pairings. Just as well - so give yourselves the time to make sure no significant errors are present:

Imperi vs Zassl vs Yoriko vs Grik (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7826444)

It was actually kind of a fun fight to run - of course that's comparing it to my day - which has been hell...

@Iced and Snommelp re: your quests

They are starting this week, but I won't be able to post the intro until later tonight (in about 3 hours I imagine - depending on how my kids are with going to sleep). I'll post here and PM when they are ready.

@Iced - good luck this week - I hope things work out better this time...

Man, Grik had the rottenest luck early in that fight. I'd almost have to say that GRIK killed Zassl, because that would've been two less eagles on the kobold...

PAIRINGS DONE

I've noticed that more and more characters hide their fight results within two spoilerblocks. When I do pairings, I have to quickly check those to prevent rematches and opening two sblocks takes much more time per character. Please don't put them in sblocks!

On a side note, sblocks are nice but please don't make a sheet that consists of nothing but sblocks *coughGatekeepercough*. No one wants to open them everytime anew. Use sblocks sparingly and intelligently for things that are normally not needed; like Past Expenditures for example.

Can't get a Giant Bee until ECL 4, and I couldn't bear to have Mushi ride anything other than a vermin. :)

Also:

Tactics received from NiQil (Caspian) and Mal-2 (Donak). Since this is my first pitlording attempt, it'll probably be tomorrow or Friday it actually gets up and done, but from the look of it, your tactics are both pretty clear and I won't have to make up anything.

Tactics received from Ravashack (Perius).

Also, I'm MystErikEry , not MysticErikEry , as I'm sure the above had found out :P For a while there, I was confused, because I didn't think I was pitlording any fights (as I did a search for MystErikEry) but I found them, thankfully :P

Saviour is fighting a ECL 4 person... You can pair up with him rather than Tatyana, perhaps? I mean, come on, Tatyana vrs Oldmcoldferson.

I forgot the credits for the Guildmasters:

+1: Caterane, Snommelp, Luni, King Uther, SauroGrenom, Vathelokai, and Ayrynthyn.

and another credit for me for being the Guildlords, too.

@all: There've been complaints about the powerrating calculation for Hunter Fights. My proposal isn't the best one so if you have a better idea tell me.

My proposal is too just use the regular rule for power ratings in a hunter fight. The rule for one-on-one fights doesn't need to be different for hunter fights.

For example in last week's Hunter Fight Kitaya defeated two targets: Asha and Haizan, while Haizan defeated one target: Mektos. Mektos and Asha didn't defeat anyone (obviously)

Current (different) rule
Kitaya: +110, Haizan: -14, Asha: -91, Mektos: -101 (total: -96)

Regular rule
Kitaya: +220, Haizan: -11, Asha -100, Mektos -109 (total: 0)

The new rule causes a general downward shift in power (it will no longer be an average of 1000), I don't think that's the intention. Also in the current system, you could actually get less rating as you defeat more gladiators in a hunter fight (because the totals are averaged), which I think is counter-intuitive. Defeating more gladiators should always get you a better rating.

Calculations:
Kitaya (power 1000): 1000/1000 * 100 (for defeating Asha) + 1200/1000 * 100 (for defeating Haizan) = 220
Haizan (power 1200): 1100/1200 * 100 (for defeating Mektos) - 1200/1000 * 100 (for being defeated by Kitaya) = -11
Asha (power 1000): 1000/1000 * -100 (for being defeated by Kitaya) = -100
Mektos (power 1100): 1100/1200 * -100 (for being defeated by Haizan) = -109

Gladius Weekly

To all our loyal readers:

The Gladius Weekly will be in late. It is very busy at work and I am suffering from RSI, which means I am putting home computing to a minimum to give my arm some rest.

I am not Pitlording this week, and had hoped to get by easily with the tactics by doing a MiniQuest and with Shazzelin challenging Maven. Instead Shazzelin was paired against the Harvester, neccessitating pages of tactics. I'm am hoping I will get around to it before friday night (the tactics and a somewhat shortened Gladius Weekly).

Between Mushi and Chili, dromites are getting a bad name :(
Mushi will be a little better when he gets to ECL 4 and can get himself a Giant Bee as a mount, just because that's cool.

Mushi isn't meant to be anything powerful (a dromite Fighter? Come on..) but rather, a neat concept of an insectoid character who rides insects. Heh.

I'd rather forfeit than have my opponent waste Magic Missile charges, so I might as well make things easier on everyone and just forfeit ;)

Would have been perfectly fine making me use the charges. I have reduce person as my personal spell as a sorceror. So, it would have cost me minimal resources. In the end it means I take those missiles against someone else. On a lighter note.. I can now go upto the next wand!

One huge error...once you are spotted, you are spotted. So after round 17, all they would be doing is firing at each other round after round, from behind their respective cover. They can "snipe" all they want, but they are being observed and neither have HiPS and therefore cannot re-hide unless they break LoS and move to another sniping roost.

Also, when they respectively take full cover, there is no need to make a hide check as there is no LoS to spot them from.

-ToK

Since, all it requires is someone duck behind the cover, to block line of sight and both character were behind cover. They can rehide as a move equivalent action. Since both characters are within hide ranks of their cover they are allowed to re-hide. Even if spotted. Yes, they are observed but by the rules they are close enough to cover that they claim the duck behind the cover.

You will notice that in any case that if they even made their spot check by 0. I assumed they know exactly where the person is and return fire. On the rare case that the person missed the spot check. They spent a round reaquireing the targets exact location. The rules I applied to this situation are as follows out of the SRD.

You need cover or concealment in order to attempt a Hide check. Total cover or total concealment usually (but not always; see Special, below) obviates the need for a Hide check, since nothing can see you anyway.

If people are observing you, even casually, you can’t hide. You can run around a corner or behind cover so that you’re out of sight and then hide, but the others then know at least where you went.

Umm...one problem with this. You said it yourself. I put it in red above. Per your own quote from the SRD, if you are observed, even casually, you can't hide. Ducking down does not qualify, because they are still in the same space, and under the hiding rules are still considered to be spotted until they move away from that space and break LOS. So for the sniping action to be successful, they must make their shot, and then not be seen on the opponents spot check. If they are seen, then they can't hide again until they break LOS.

I can easily add one round between each round to represent they have gained full cover from their location. This automaticly provides them with a hide check. because both players stated they want to not goto melee. Technically, I deviated from the tactics of both players on round 10. To do the fight correctly it would look like:

Round 1 to 4 players get into position:

Rounds 5+ player waits for other player to show up.

Somewhere around hour 40 they need to make Con checks to see if they take damage from thirst. This countinues every hour until one dies. First one to die from thirst looses.

So, how should that work? Most of the rounds the combatants both had move actions to use. Could they walk 5' to full cover (breaking LoS), then attempt to sneak right back to where they started? Do they need another set of Move Silently / Hide / Spot / Listen checks every round?

I ask because I have a character who, at least in theory, can do the same sniping thing, but I don't know exactly how it works (despite having read the books).

I think that the gold balance is more important, and failure to pay - as long as you have the cash available wont freeze your character in the prison.

@marxus tactics recived and right back at ya, took a bit of consideration.

He paid for the bow and crafted it. He even actually placed it in his attack characteristic. what he failed to do was actually carry the bow in his inventory or place the bow at home. It is not listed anywhere on the character sheet except as an attack and as a crafted item in the spent money. The weights for it aren't listed meaning it only half got placed on the character sheet. It needs to be listed in the weight section with its ammuntions.

You basically have it exactly right.

Round 1
A is hidden in box 1, B is in box 2
A fires, and is then spotted by B (B makes his spot check to do this)

Round 2
A moves (minimum 5 ft) to break LOS

Round 3
A moves back to firing spot, making another hide check (assuming B doesn't see him here)
A fires. B then attempts to spot again...if B spots, then go back to Round 2 and repeat sequence. If B fails spot, then A can fire again from this spot in round 4, and can rehide again after firing, and can do so each round until B sees him. Then A would go back to the steps in Round 2 and start over.

Sniping is a FULL ROUND ACTION...they don't have a move-eq left to move anywhere to break LOS. Sorry, doesn't work that way. And like i said, if there was any action left that would allow him to move to full cover (or duck back behind it) you don't need to roll a hide check, because there isn't any LoS....but your opponent (if spotted on the snipe) knows exactly where you ducked behind anyhow.

What exactly is the purpose of having equipment at home then, if you can switch out everything on the fly? It also makes it impossible to adjucate properly if encumbrance is correct etc.

And when is the next Prison round coming around? I reported The Harvester some time ago (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7738025&postcount=614), but I see the errors have not been corrected yet.

*shrugs* I suppose I'm wrong. But thats what I remember Cat saying. Seems a little silly imho, that the extent of your accessible gear must be carried on your person at all times.

Precisely, but I am looking specifically at the Tower Shield the Harvester has laying around at home and I have to know if I should consider H. using it when writing my tactics. It seem H. has the Tower Shield always at home, bringing it with him in he fight when he needs it.

EDIT: see this fight (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7812778), you see Cat mentioning the Tower Shield in his tactics, while his sheet shows the only tower shield Harvester owns lying at home.....

I already have difficulty with free armor and ally swapping, I hope item's at home swapping isn't included in the options as well. Otherwise I will just leave all my equipment at home, be free of encumbrance and have no penalties on Hide and Spot and make my Pitlords do all calculations on the fly (yes I am kidding, I don't wish that on any Pitlord, I just think it's not entirely fair to have 'surprises' lying around in your home stash, and makes it extremely difficult to write appropriate tactics as well.)

I remember in last week's fight the Maraxus said his Pixie should have brought more arrows vs. Ashur. If he has access to arrows at home, he should indeed have brought them if it carries no penalty other then extra Pitlord calculations.
Tellish_of_Ket

11-25-05, 06:16 PM
Well, Cat's wrong. That's all there is to it. If he has listed as "At Home", then it stays there. The pitlord should not have allowed him to utilize it. And it's not that you have to carry all your kit on you at all times, just list it in stuff you could "potentially" take into the arena and avoid the confusion. That way you have the option of using it or not.

Here ya go Book5.....Tactics for Greefe and Aranor. Sindorin was tied up with Holiday goings-on, so I had to write these myself. I'm not too keen on magic so I've been doing lots of reading. I hope I do well by Aranor. Alright....here goes.
A quick note - As far as I know, Noko's small shortbow only does 1d4 damage, not 1d6. I do not know if there is any special rule about this or not....it doesn't apprear to be anything but a +1 small shortbow.

You can use the larger sized weapons for a -4 but I think thats an oversight on Noko's part. As far as magic - the only suggestion I have is starting with a presto spell, it will save several move-e actions. I'll go get some munchies and see if you respond before I start.

Nothing much to say there. ... Except for the question, why the hell, I had to run in that one turn the swarm of eagles attacked me. Not only that the move silently check plus range would have made it much, much less possible to pinpoint me, the 4 additional points of AC were definitly necessary.

I also want to note that take 10 has nothing to do with "failure is critical" - that's take 20. Take 10 is about ... "Distractions or threats". Since I'm not threatened, while invisible, this should have been possible. On the other hand, one could say that the heat from the pool counts as distraction, so it's okay, too.

At least it was a cheap lose ... except for this totally unnecessary scorching ray, when my opponent was in shocking grasp reach - but I see a contiency in my tactics for a similar situation, where I wanted to do so. :( I have to write longer tactics. No tactic with less then 10.000 characters can cover all situations, especially with 4 players.

PS: Team tactics from Auburn and Tan received. With so much, I will only try to find out what is the general idea behind this anyway, so it would not matter, that there are still some details unclear. (Not to be taken seriously)

Well, the pool definitely counts as a distraction and a threat to me (20d6 damage per round would do that for most people). Regardless, you had a +4 to your jump check and the DC of the jump was 5 (10 to remain standing).

I definitely considered using a shocking grasp instead of the ray - but when it came down to it - you made no mention of the touch spell and you did mention the ray. In other words - I went with the tactics you had.

As to the jump - I wouldn't really recommend doing the jump across unless you have a use for being there. Just picture what could've happened there that wouldn't have happened elsewhere:

1. You essentially are "trapped" at a location of range - meaning any of your opponents could plug you or surround you (ie eagles). You won't get cover from anyone who chooses to negate it; they will have cover if they choose to take it.
2. In order to get across, you need to take a -20 to your MS check while invisible, unless you want to make it a more difficult jump check (DC10 to cross, DC20 to remain standing).
3. If you fail on that jump you either make the chasm (but make a fair amount of noise in so doing) or you die instantly.

Also, where most of your powerful attacks are fairly short range (touch or ray spells) - being in the center isn't too useful. Now, if you had enlarge spell or acid arrow on your list - this wouldn't be As bad at higher levels - but still at this point, I don't think it is a good idea.

Well, I neither knew, it would be that dangerous to jump that lava, nor that loud.
In this case, you are right, with all that noise and no dex after landing, it is definitly a bad idea (when the opponents are flying). However, staying in charge lines of someone like Grik is no good idea either and I expected to be quite save from Yoriko's grapples up on the stature. And with shield and cover, I did not fear attacks, too.
Plus, magic missles have enough range.
...Thinking over it again, it was a good tactic, just bad circustances.

About the scorching ray: Yes, and I - as pitlord - would probably have done so, too. At least since that one fight where I had done something that was obviously better then the character's tactic and were forced to edit the fight because of this.

Okay - now that I've had more time, I do see one error worth bringing up. Bounty's AC is counting a light spiked shield that he cannot have equipped while firing his bow. This reduces his AC by one and results in a hit on one of the rounds (22 I think - I'll go back and check to confirm). Given that, if you give me a fortitude save on it - I'll be completely satisfied.

Thanks.

I'm supposed to work Saturday AND Sunday, and have my boyfriend coming down to visit Sunday and Monday all of a sudden, and my Mom's sister and her husband are coming down to visit for the weekend as well, and will be staying in the room where the computer is so I won't have access to late-night shinanegans...

Is anyone willing to pitlord for the two fights I'm supposed to do? >_<

I picked the worst week ever, it seems, for this :P I get called in to work for the Friday, somehow get full shifts for the weekend (I don't find out my schedule until Wednesdays anyway, so it was a risk taken on my part), and now have family over. It's crazy. Fortunately, next Tuesday is my last day of work, so I'll have a lot of time off AFTER all this.

If I can't get someone else to do them, I'll probably not have these done by Monday; they'd be posted sometime Monday afternoon (PST) at the earliest, I think. U_U And that is bad.

Thanks.

It amounted to 8 damage. This wasn't enough to effect the end of the fight. The save was a 22 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=195860) vs DC 13. Which I annotated in round 22.

Because Drueger are immune to the poison by CoCo rules he may bath in it while applying it. Therefore, he may prebuff his arrows.

Well, generally if someone posts to say they'll be late, you may want to accomodate it, after all, they did give notice. It would be different if he didn't say anything. In that case, friday evening you would send him a PM asking for his tactics, and with non forthcoming by Saturday past noon, then the fight would be forfeit.

However, this isn't the case and is a bit of a grey area. Since he left before he was paired, he couldn't possibly know who his pitlord was and thus was resigned to just posting a message on the boards concerning his tardiness.

How long you wait though is up to you. Personally, i'd give him until the Sunday as he claimed. But that's just me.

Aranor cannot target Invictus with see invisibility (target Personal). Not true. Spells with a range of personal can be cast on a familiar.
Looks like this might change a lot.
Share Spells: At the master’s option, he may have any spell (but not any spell-like ability) he casts on himself also affect his familiar. The familiar must be within 5 feet at the time of casting to receive the benefit. If the spell or effect has a duration other than instantaneous, it stops affecting the familiar if it moves farther than 5 feet away and will not affect the familiar again even if it returns to the master before the duration expires. Additionally, the master may cast a spell with a target of “You” on his familiar (as a touch range spell) instead of on himself. A master and his familiar can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the familiar’s type (magical beast). The wording of "You" was changed to "Personal" in 3.5.

*EDIT* Now that I look at it, the see invisibility spell was from a scroll, so it couldn't be shared anyway. Never mind.

But I did see this
Concentration: The spell lasts as long as you concentrate on it. Concentrating to maintain a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Anything that could break your concentration when casting a spell can also break your concentration while you’re maintaining one, causing the spell to end. You can’t cast a spell while concentrating on another one. Sometimes a spell lasts for a short time after you cease concentrating.Noko and Validi use a number of free actions to control the illusions.

And in round 9, unless I'm missing something, Aranor made his caster level check.

Round 11, Invictus would loose a hp for doing anything other then a move equivilent, and thus go unconcious.

Dosn't change much except to make things go faster. In anyevent, I didn't read the tactics, so I don't really know what's going on. ;)

Hell...I may as well get things rolling. Greefe's first move is impossible, I think. Run can only be in a straight line. Let me preface this by saying that I am not going to ask for any changes to this fight, because I knew going in I had little chance to win, and I don't wish to burn expendables.

That said...let me point out errors for your own edification:

Round 8: Can you kindly show a source that says a barbarian in rage cannot use a wand? I know of no such restriction.

Round 9: Why am I trying to break out, when my tactics specifically said to attack?

Round 11: I am now out of the grapple. A failed grapple check on my opponents part cause the grapple to break. Why did I not draw my longsword and attack in melee, as indicated in my tactics?

Round 12: Since I am now out of the grapple, there should have been a touch attack for Santos to re-initiate the grapple. Also, why would I be trying to get out again, instead of trying to damage Santos?

While raging, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for Balance, Escape Artist, Intimidate, and Ride), the Concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration, nor can he cast spells or activate magic items that require a command word, a spell trigger (such as a wand), or spell completion (such as a scroll) to function.
Your right on all other counts, though. I'd ask for corrections, starting with 5' back before taping the tatoo. But that's me.

The Fight Harvester vs Shazzelin (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7846550&postcount=697) has been posted. What a huge work, it took me over two hours and ended with a surrender.

Thank you for running it Pitbull! It was bound to be a difficult fight, since there were two evaders in the fight. I don't have any complaints about the outcome of the fight or the surrender. I do have questions about the application of the delaying rule.

There is a non-cumulative 10-round limit to delaying tactics. Every ten rounds, you have to interact meaningfully with your opponent. If you do not, the pitlord is free to introduce some unfortunate circumstance (a random spectator yelling out your exact position, for example, or people throwing beer bottles at you) that makes you vulnerable. Note that this limit only applies if one of the characters wants to engage the other, but the other one is hiding, invisible, or out of reach. If both characters are doing their best to fight the other, no penalty should be introduced. Similarly, if a wizard is flying over the head of a melee fighter and peppering him with Magic Missiles while he is unable to do anything, no penalty should be given, since there is meaningful interaction between the gladiators.

As you might note, there is nothing about intent there. That is just as well, since intent would be useless. Every gladiator wants to engage in terms most favorable to him, that is a given. If they try to achieve this favorable situation by hiding, invisibility or being out of reach, they will be penalized after 10 rounds, but only if there has been no meaningful interaction.

1. In my opinion H's casting of a silent image and S. disbelieving it counts as meaningful interaction.

2. Regardless of whether it counts as interaction, the Harvester should be the first to be called out according to the rules quoted above. Shazzelin wants to engage the Harvester, but he can't since his opponent is flying around invisibly. The Harvester also wants to engage Shazzelin, but he can't since Shazzelin is hiding in a difficult to find spot. Since the Harvester won initiative, he will be the first one to be called out for delaying. Hiding is not lower on the 'delaying scale' than flying around invisibly.

The situation (according to the rules) can't be any clearer as in this case: both opponent are eligible for application of the delaying rule.

Only you decided not to apply the delaying rule the The Harvester, I would like to hear why.

I also would like to hear Cat's opinion why The Harvester isn't delaying in this case, since that seems to be the message in his PM, while according to his own rules, he is. Especially since he is a party to this fight.

I don't mind so much what the exact rules for delaying are, as long as they are clear. In this case I thought they were clear, but they were not applied as they should.

Well, sorry about the confuzzlement... but all your grapple checks were to do damage. So much for my descriptive goodness :P
You never succeeded on any of your checks, so even if you were trying to break out, it doesnt matter since you didnt... The only time you DID beat him, was on his grapple check to do damage to you, so it didnt have any effect on anything.
I cant even go back and give you a 5' move to do the tattoo thing, since you told me to keep you planted against the wall. 5' any direction, and your still in 5' of him... 10' and he gets you anyways. Sorry.

Thanks for picking up the fight at the last minute Vathelokai. I see a couple of small things, that I don't think change the outcome any. First, I wanted to engage my foe as quickly as possible, and only buff if he broke Line of sight, or I couldn't find him in round one, rather than buffing first. I guess I'll need to be more clear when writing my tactics.

Second, you can't ready Rapid Shots, becuase it's a full attack. I think the only round that triggered was round 8.

Third, can I really Hide while riding a creature that doesn't have a Hide skill?

Team fight TAOvPSI (Aranor & Greefe vs Noko & Validi) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=7850160#post7850160)

I wasnt sure untill the last round, woot!

The major problems I have with this:

1. Noko is female. ;)
2. Why did Noko leave her hiding place in round 4. Didn't my tactic make clear, that I was horribly afraid of being spotted by Aranor? There are 3 conditions, when I wanted to move out, in round 4 none of them is given.
3. Spell-like abilities have neither somatic nor verbal components. I can do that with bow and arrow in hands and it does not make any sound.
4. When firering Noko with magi missles, Aranor has to do two caster level checks: One to cast the missles from the sroll and one (at +7) to penetrate my spell resistence.

However, all those is minor compared to:

5: After casting scorching rays on Validi in round 8, Aranor became visible! For Noko this means
Then hit him with a targeted dispeal magic. Then ready to snipe him, should he cast something.

However, the fact that Validi played with Greefe, too, is just as bad. We both had Aranor as primary target and attacked Greefe through the wizard was in sight.

You could do what I do in that situation: two seperate posts, one for character sheets and tactics and another for the fight itself.
Also, you could look for ways to streamline the tactics; take out parts that don't have to do with the fight, like the "thanks for running the fight" that most people start and end with.

Sorry, the main problem was, that Ashhur was just as fast as your characters and used a reach weapon. That made "one withdraws and one shoots" impossible. The early 20-20 was one bad luck.

A Ouch, poor auburn! "Crys" :D

B Yeah how does that go with the rewards again?

C ... actually - 50 > 40 and it would take two rounds (double move & double move & move-shoot, double move & double move & move-shoot) --> maybe even run around the pillars and try to get a "sneak attack" also - Im not sure if its being taken into account but normally loading a sling is a move action like a crossbow - but I have prestidigitation! No digging aroung in rock pouch - just snap, catch floating rock, snap. "third hand"

D Crits cant be argued ;)

E I think the reason I take so long is I let my neighbors/roomates/people bother me so much! I talked to like 5 people and went to lunch with friends durring the time I was running your fight the first time. 3 people, this, and dinner this time!

And I thought Tan and Auburn would start in the same box.

round 5: resist electricity is a CL2, so it would come after the other spells in dispel order.
Auburn and Ashur autospot each other, but there is cover between the two. No hide check was made.

Round 6: Ashur's cooridnates are off. I assumed that the description given in the round was correct, since Ashur couldn't move to such a spot.

Round 7: Auburn casts chill touch within the range of Ashur's silence. Likewise, Tan never tried to dispel the silence.

Round 8: Auburn 5ft. steps into Ashur's threat range. Ashur dosn't have combat reflexes, and Auburn could have escaped unharmed, since Ashur had already used his AOO that round.

Round 9: I'm guessing cooridnates for Tan are wrong, since he tumbled into the threat range.
Two 20's in a row?! Man....
Auburn can use autohypnosis to stabalize instead of 10%, since the roll is better.

Round 12: Tan didn't have to 5 ft. step, so he could have moved.

Round 14: Auburn chooses to get up, provoking an AOO. Since 5 ft. step is "not an action", Auburn could have moved out of threat range, then gotten up. That would make Ashur's killing stike in round 15 miss.

Generaly: Since Ashur was using a reach weapon, some of the 5 ft. step then attack moves wouldn't have worked. There were a lot of instances where people 5' steped into a threatened spot, when they were not threatened to begin with

Also, Tan and Auburn's tactics focus on evasion. The movement was supposed to circle around one of the sets of pillars to keep Ashur in chase mode. In single moves Ashur matches speed with opponents (tan 50 vs. Ashur 40+10'reach weapon), but with double moves Ashur can be out run (Tan 100 vs. Ashur 80+10' reach). Admitidly it's not much, but going toe to toe with the barbarian is also a bit much. Of course changing this (except in the last few rounds) would be hell, and I'm not going to demand it. Just saying that from around round 6 on, that was not the movement/type of combat we were trying to do.

Conclusion: Just about every error I can find dosn't change anything. The only ones are round 7 and round 14(above). That seems pretty important. Admitidly, I didn't write tactics for the scenerio in 14 and it is pitlord prerogative on how to handle it. If you think you have time to change it, I'd love to see the outcome, though I suspect it would only add a couple rounds to the fight. If you don't have time, no big deal.

Just wanted to officially state an apology to everyone who was involved with my characters or fights this week. Run of bad luck made my local server back at home slow as a turtle. Thank you for putting up with it and much thanks to those who took my fights!

Again, very sorry about what happened.

Sorry about the delays with my fights as well, but I promise that both will be up before the deadline.

Ashhûr Demonslayer challg. Tan & Auburn...

...took some time. Poor Auburn had to die 4 times. But in the and, the winner is ... see yourselves.

I'm not sure about the rewards again. How is it in a 2 vs 1?

Hmm. Ashhûr did use some scrolls in the fight, Silence, Bear's Endurance and Resist Energy. I should craft armor spikes to make up for the glaive's lack of 5' attacks.

As for rewards, Ashhûr should get an ECL 5 + ECL 3.

Tan and Auburn get ECL 5/2? [Half each?]. I'm not sure though.

OK Im not gonna say what is different - but Im to round 15, and am taking a break - but I will say that the players standing are different.

And a few things - 5ft crawl is not free, and it does provoke, I wasnt all thurough but remember glaves dont threaten the 5ft space inside their reach - also I have tumble, and so does auburn... I have always assumed that allowed you to "tumble" draw items - since its a "move action" to draw a scroll or what not (never mind - we dont draw AoOs on drawing items - PRESTO! ) but I know it allows you to stand/move without AoOs.

My big fuss is that Tan can stay out of Ashhur's reach. At least untill expiditious retreet runs out...

Looks like this was an ECL 6 fight for Ashur, and an ECL 5 fight for Tan/Auburn.
That's the way I'd do it.

So thats 2250 + 140.625(6.25% from ally) = 2390.625 xp and 2000 + 125 = 2125 gp for Ashur. Ashur used scrolls of silence, bears endurance, and resist energy. Tan used 4 charges of Ashur's wand of CLW.

*EDIT* But then I found the rules quote below. Seems you make a little more money using the Gladius rules.

Multiplayer Fights: If you face more than one gladiator, you calculate xp and gold for each opponent gladiator seperately, add the results together, and divide it by the number of allied gladiators you have.
Ashur gets 750 + (25% from ally) = 937.5 xp and 900 + 225 = 1125 gp from Tan.
Ashur gets 1500 xp and 1600 gp from Auburn.
Total, Ashur gets 2437.5 xp and 2725 gp.
Ashur used scrolls of silence, bears endurance, and resist energy. Tan used 4 charges of Ashur's wand of CLW.

Tan gets 600 - (25% from ally) 150 = 450 xp and 300(max) - 75 = 225 gp.
Auburn gets 500 xp and 533 gp.
Team TAO gets total 950/2 = 475 xp and 758/2 = 379 gp.

Still waiting to hear Maraxus' response to my question about round 14 before I go and change my sheet.

Kronos (NiQil) vs Perius (Ravashack) is up!

Since its my first time of pilording, I wouldnt mind if anyone would look over it if there is anything major wrong.

Actually, I said that if it looks like he's going to come into melee anyway, use it. ^_^

Also, you need to roll to see if the missed arrow is recoverable or not--I don't remember what numbers you use though but I think it's a straight 50% chance.

No problem. BTW, I can read German, so I don't think the original won't be a problem as well.

I cleaned my PM-Box after the fight, so it's gone. Cat may have the original one.

The reason why I decided against Shazzelin was this:

• The Harvester moved out of his startingbox searching for Shazzelin. So he showed the audience and the umpire his intend to attack and not to delay the fight.

• Shazzelin did nothing, but buffing and hiding. There was no intend of getting the fight forward reckognizable. If Shazzelin would have moved out invisible, there wouldn't be a violation on his side.

Therefor I decided to give Shazzelin the violation for not coming out of his hide.

Let's wait what Cat has to say.

Round 5: Damn ranger scribed scrolls. That has to confuse somebody. :(

If coordinates are off that happened because I had to redo a bit of movement when I thought a glaive did not have reach and Auburn withdrawed and Ashhur chased a lot through the southwest part of the arena. ... At least I hope this is the reason.

Round 7: Chill touch: right. I hoped nobody notice. Noticed it myself only in the end, too. And since Auburn was dead and it chanced nothing, I decided not to change it. (Want the scroll refunded?)
Tan did not try to dispeal, because in the beginning, I interpreted the "steal the cure wand"-part higher. After that, it made no sense.

Round 8: Sorry, looks like I was to much in character at that moment and just though: Provoking AoOs: Bad.

Round 12: Well, end of round 11, I see coordinates (-23, -6) and (-22, -8) - looks threatened to me. The Aoo would have come from taking out the wand (or is that a weaponlike object... Well, that's a minor point I think. ... Damn, with presdigitation you are probably right (is the wand light enough? I think so)

But the important thing is

Round 14: At least that one is clear. :) 5 ft step is no action, indeat, but it is not allowed when you are prone. When prone you can crawl 5 ft as a move (or was it full round?), however, unless you can tumble, this provokes an AoO, too

Movement thing: Right, looks like my fault again. Through not getting cornered with only 10 ft speed advantage is hard, it could have been possible. Overall, I think this would have caused a delay untill expeditious retread runs out, in which Ashhur would have tryed to catch you, maybe had stayed and readied inside an obstacle and a lot of nothing had happened, untill exp. retreat ran out.

Will edit the rewards soon bvut have to go now (damn, again late). About the expenses: I think the cure charages are replaced. Anything else looks wrong to me.

Therefor I decided to give Shazzelin the violation for not coming out of his hide.

Let's wait what Cat has to say.

A. That's not what the rules say. I counted on the rules to be applied as they were written. That's what I base my tactics on, not on Pitlord's subjective interpretations, however well intended and motivated they may be.

B. Shazzelin is not responsible for the Harvester flying around invisibly, and thus making it impossible for him to 'get the fight forward' in any manner other than setting himself up for defeat (by showing himself and waving around for example). He should not be penalized for the Harvester's choice of tactics. Sniping is not inherently more wrong than 'flying invisibly', even though some Pitlords may feel that way.

C. If what you say was true, would there be no violation if Shazzelin turned invisible and walked around the arena looking for The Harvester? If so, I would have written that in my tactics. Both gladiators would still not be able to engage each other, and the Harvester would still be called out first. I personally think moving around in futility is no different from standing still in futility, but for the fact that moving around is more detrimental to Shazzelin's health when he is called out for delaying. My tactics just prescribed the smart choice of two.

D. I must restate: intent has nothing to do with the delaying rule IMO. Two Harvesters both flying around invisibly and unable to locate one another would be indicated by the umpire after 10 rounds, even though they may dearly want to melee each other. The rule prevents endless fights or stalemates when neither of the gladiators wants to give up the advantage that makes him vulnerable to his opponent, and thereby cannot engage his opponent as well.

E. If you are very convinced of your point of view about the delaying rule, I would appreciate a PM in advance stating that my tactics wouldn't work because you apply the delaying rule different than is written. That at least gives me a chance to adapt my tactics.

I think so)Yeah, the predtidigitation throws a kink in things, since there is no rule on how it works in combat. I've just been guessing, and the elders havn't made a call on it. I don't think they will unless somebody throws a huge fit. We could pretend to fight about it ;)
But the important thing is

Round 14: At least that one is clear. :) 5 ft step is no action, indeat, but it is not allowed when you are prone. Will edit the rewards soon bvut have to go now (damn, again late). About the expenses: I think the cure charages are replaced. Anything else looks wrong to me.It's come up a couple times and the rule seems to be that if someone steals a potion and drinks it, the potion is lost. It makes sense that it would work the same way for wands.

So I'm guessing the results stand? Not trying to be pushy; just want a definitive statement, so Auburn can march into the WAR guild and complain about the ref :)

If I'm really wrong, the option would be to penalized both gladiators in the same time. Meaning that Shazzelin gets the Harvester's position too and is able to release his readied shot.

Round 4.

Kronos moves forward to come within one range increment of his weapon and also fails to hit his enemy.

Your die roll shows a natural 1 on Kronos's first attack.

And the idea behind "The opponent is going to close to melee in the next round anyway" is that if he's capable of closing to melee the next round, well, Perius doesn't have any metapsionics, not does he have any other use for his psionic focus in this particular case, so may as well blow it on the available chance. That's all.

Ummm... Auburn has tumble for exactly this kind of thing (escaping melee opponents).

Well, she does not really have it. +3 is not much. A normal tumble has a DC 25 and moves at half speed. So, to get 5 feet away, you would have to take a double move. Next turn Ashhur steps after you and nothing is gained, except for a 60% chance, your tumble fails.
Or you take an accelerated tumble, but that DC is 25, so you would auto-fail

So I'm guessing the results stand? Not trying to be pushy; just want a definitive statement, so Auburn can march into the WAR guild and complain about the ref :)

About the ongoing fight that MysticMonk2005 is running:

In round 2, Zelos is listed as moving out of the entangle area. However, assuming it was centered on Zelos (as stated in my tactics), he has to move 40ft in order to get out and even after making his initial save, he can only move at half-speed through the entangled field - meaning a max of 30ft.

Thanks again for picking up this fight!

Comments so far:

Entangle is a 40' radius spread. Even if one makes their save, they can only move at half speed. I couldn't tell where the entangle was centered -- so Zelos may need to make another save if he is still in the entangle area when Faelto's turn comes up again.
Likewise, Khronos needs to make a save every round that he is in the entangle (on Faelto's)
init. If he fails a save, he will take the entangled penalties. (-2 penalty on all attack rolls and a -4 penalty to Dexterity => for a total of -4 to ranged attacks, -2AC, -2 melee attacks) Entangle has a duration of 1min/level so 3 min in this case.
If Zelos is entangled, DC 15+power level concentration checks are needed to manifest powers while he is entangled.

Alterself has a duration of 10min/level so the alterself spell will last for 30min not 3min -- not that I expect the fight to run that long.

FYI -- on round 2, Fealto gets a ride check for cover not that it matters in this case. I don't believe that Fealto can do this while Flatfoot in round 1. Fealto also should make a stay in saddle check in round 2 to see if she falls off when she passes out.
Sauria would normally defend her master (starting in round 2 if not given other direction) but if Faelto falls from the saddle it would be likely that Sauria will stay by her fallen master to protect her.

Sorry, but I believe, this rule bases completely on Pitlord's subjective interpretations. When we invented this rule, it was meant like this. If it has changed and I missed it, I apologize.

It might not have changed and your interpretation of the rules intention might be correct, but since I wasn't there when it was invented, I don't know what the original intention was, and I can only go by what the rule actually says.

Yes, of course is sniping more in danger to commit a violation. You have no right to wait for an oponent, that's why we invented this rule.

That was not my interpretation, which is an indication that the rule could be worded better if it was intended that way. In battle post you wrote you liked clarification on the situation and applicability of the delaying rule. This suggests to me that the application of the rule was not crystal clear to you as well.

If both weren't able to find each other and everybody has shown his intent to get forward, rather than waiting for the other. I would have ruled that both positions are revealed.

True, but Shazzelin wanted to go forward with the fight as well, it was just that he couldn't because he was unable to locate his target properly. That was not his responsibility. Neither should he have to obligation to reveal himself any more than The Harvester has. My only problem was that I knew in advance the The Harvester would be invisible, and tried to prepare for that contingency. If it comes down to subjective Pitlord interpretation what tactic they think is somehow 'more cowardly' than the other to apply the delaying penalty, then I don't think it's a good rule.

See my ruling above, in your example both Harvesters show their intent. If one would fly away or stay undectactable hidden the whole time, he would be penalized.

So you would let the fight run on until the duration of both Harvester's invisibility expires? Even if it means no meaningful interaction occurs for 30+ rounds? It may well be that was the intention of the delaying rule, but it is not what the letter of the delaying rule says. It says that both should be penalized after 10 rounds.

Yes, sorry, but I rarely respond to tactics, since my time is very limeted. I've been pretty busy in my work, got lots of emergency cases this weekend.

I understand. I usually read tactics extensively when I am busy Pitlording, not before. It is what I desire, but not something I expect, let alone demand from a Pitlord.

Suggestion:

Since we have time until next pairings, let's wait what Cat has to say, perhaps he can state it clear.
If I'm really wrong, the option would be to penalized both gladiators in the same time. Meaning that Shazzelin gets the Harvester's position too and is able to release his readied shot.

Maybe I wasn't clear in my first post: I don't want a rerun or an edit. IMO your application of the delaying rule was not a big error, and even with a rerun I think The Harvester has a far better chance to win. The Harvester has won, Shazzelin has lost, I am satisfied with that.

What I do like is a rules clarification. I don't mind the losing as much as writing two pages of tactics which fail because the delaying rule is apparently applied differently than I was able to interpret from the text alone.

According to your interpretation my tactics would be best served by turning invisible and walking around 'looking for the Harvester'. Since then you would attribute 'intent' to Shazzelin and would not penalize him, even though the Harvester might not be able to find him.

I just like to get it right when I am writing tactics.

But let's be patient and give Cat a chance to reply....

Yes, I think so. :D

actually so at +3 it needs a 12 or more roughly a 40% chance of sucess which is not so bad
but you are right to stand up using tumble seems difficult as it needs the double move.

perhaps it would have been better to declare a full defense and then attempt to get up provoking an AoO.

or perhaps attack while prone?

DC 15 Tumble at one-half speed as part of normal movement, provoking no attacks of opportunity while doing so. Failure means you provoke attacks of opportunity normally. Check separately for each opponent you move past, in the order in which you pass them (player’s choice of order in case of a tie). Each additional enemy after the first adds +2 to the Tumble DC.

Azriel vs Sdentch (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7861769) is up. Tight fight, full of heavy hitting action.

@TheMagister - I strongly recommend including a precise time to use Rage - as it wasn't clear from your tactics.

@OWA - tripping a flying character doesn't work so well - so you just flat out attacked.

Drat! Well... If were talking about my "halfling honor" I would rather conceed (and give Ashhur his wand back - as of round 19 when Tan went off tactics just have him take the wand out and offer it to Ashhur) as oppoesed to just getting creemed. Chaotic Good, Tan would feel bad about depriving a new ally of the rather expensive wand.

@An Elder - Did Vath explain the rewards correctly? I thought that fighting an higher ECL (via challenge) would garner Tan more XP even on a loss...

You forgot to add the +2 favored enemy bonus to damage vs Faelto which bring him to -11hp and dead. Also in my tactics its specifically mentioned that if there is time, Khoronus will drink his potion of protection vs good, and while his horse is entangled and he sees no enemy he has obviously time.
comments on other peoples comments:

Potion of see invisible is not legal without paying credits.
Tattoos of vigor should be ML1 and are correctly marked at 100gp each. ML2 tattoos would cost credits and cost 200gp each.

I could have sworn to see the potion of see invisible on the list. My mistake there. ML on tatoos is a typo.

Round 4.

Kronos moves forward to come within one range increment of his weapon and also fails to hit his enemy.

Your die roll shows a natural 1 on Kronos's first attack.

I missed the miss and corrected it in the fight: Kronos used 4 arrows now

And the idea behind "The opponent is going to close to melee in the next round anyway" is that if he's capable of closing to melee the next round, well, Perius doesn't have any metapsionics, not does he have any other use for his psionic focus in this particular case, so may as well blow it on the available chance. That's all.

I dont agree. He specifically wrote in his tactics to use psionic shot only under one of the noted situations with no exceptions, and none of the noted situations was clearly there. Also using psionic shot when having a distance penalty to attack is probably not such a good idea.

@Usurpator: The Harvester buffed for 5 rounds, then went out to actively search you. Shazzelin did nothing but sit there and hide. That's the difference.

If you would have walked out invisible in active search for me, you would not have been penalized. Of course, I would have cast see invisibility and auto-spotted you. I will not be penalized because you cannot see invisible beings.

And it's not a stalemate. The Harvester would have detected you sooner or later because he negates your cover from above. It was only a matter of time, delayed by your hiding.

Usurpator, your whole tactic was based on delaying, avoidance, and hiding, to wait my buffs out (which I could just renew anyway) which is very different from my rather offensive tactic. You shouldn't wonder that you were penalized.

@Usurpator: The Harvester buffed for 5 rounds, then went out to actively search you. Shazzelin did nothing but sit there and hide. That's the difference.

Considering what I know of the rules and expected of the Harvester's tactics, that would seem the best option. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with being a sniper, in any case not more wrong than an invisible grappler, and if there is, you should write it into the rules.

If you would have walked out invisible in active search for me, you would not have been penalized. Of course, I would have cast see invisibility and auto-spotted you. I will not be penalized because you cannot see invisible beings.

I cannot read that in the rules as written. If I had known this interpretation, I would have obviously chosen a slightly different tactic.

Shazzelin wanted to engage the Harvester, it was just that he couldn't, and wandering around invisibly wouldn't have changed that one bit, you know that. Both gladiators were unable to act against the other because of actions of their opponent.

I will not be penalized because your Spot cannot beat my Hide skill. Your argument can be applied in symmetry. There is a fair chance Harvester's Invisibility will expire before he flies into a position that will allow him to spot Shazzelin.

And it's not a stalemate. The Harvester would have detected you sooner or later because he negates your cover from above. It was only a matter of time, delayed by your hiding.

With a stalemate I meant a situation that doesn't progress significantly in 10 consequtive rounds, such as in this case.

Usurpator, your whole tactic was based on delaying, avoidance, and hiding, to wait my buffs out (which I could just renew anyway) which is very different from my rather offensive tactic. You shouldn't wonder that you were penalized.

That is absolutely true, and my biggest goal was to eliminate a few 20 round buffs like expeditious retreat, entropic shield and possible shocking grasp (of which you had only one scroll). Since the rules require meaningful interaction once every 10 rounds, there is a practical maximum of 2-3 times that I could do that.

Your tactic was based on making it impossible for Shazzelin to attack H. unless you were sure you could disable me. You wanted to attack me without risk, I wanted to do the same. Nothing inherently wrong with that. Your tactics included 9 points, of which 8 where defensive or buffs and the 9th also included adding a True Strike to your buffs. Your one modifications was defensive as well.

Waiting buffs out is a smart thing to do when facing opponents who get a big power boost for a small time by using limited resources. For example: I see many tactics stating that they will go Total Defense or even retreat when an opponent rages, and then return when the rage has expired and the opponent is fatigued. That's just good strategy. Some people delay the fight until certain buffs are up, others delay until certain buffs are down. Nothing wrong with that until it gets out of hand, hence the 10-round rule.

In general, the Harvester relies heavily on expendable resources to win. To counter such a tactic you need to force your opponent to use more than he wants to, or make sure that the expendable resources have as little effect as possible. Currently the Harvester used 825 gp. of expendables or about 69% of his winnings. If I had forced him to also use See Invisibility, that would rise to 81%. Currently Shazzelin used 75 gp. of expendables, or 19% of his winnings.

With a Harvester that was willing to spend any amount of resources to win, Shazzelin's chances for a victory were slim. The only thing I could do was do the best I can to make sure it would be a hard-fought victory.

But if I understand correcly, meaningful interaction once every 10 rounds is not required and no delay rule is invoked as long as both opponents are willing to engage the other. With 'willingness to engage' determined subjectively by the Pitlord in question?

My purpose with Shazzelin was to make a sniping character. I don't mind that CoCo imposes limits to such a tactic, but I do want to know what exactly those limits are in advance, since I am probably going to run into similar situations again.

@Dr. Funk: I have a disagreement with how you have handled the spotting in the fight (httphttp://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7838399&postcount=695/) as it is fairly pivotal (particulary for Cyra).

Focusing on round 5 (since that's where it begins)

Hide and Spot ... Secondly, an opponent gets one reactive Spot roll every round in the opponent's round, if line of sight is not completely blocked. For the distance modifier, use the closest distance the opponent was to the spotter in the round. If the spotter wants to make a Spot roll during his own action, he'll have to use a move action.
Since the LOS is not completely blocked Gaston should get a reactive spot check. Also note that LOS is not completely blocked on round 1 for Cyra so she should get a spot check then too.

Sneaking: You are autospotted if you leave cover or concealment, and opponent has Line of Sight to you and you are more than 1 foot per rank in hide away from a cover.
However since Cyra is only 5ft away from cover (the column in round 5) and since she has a +10 in hide she should definitely not be autospotted.

Spot checks may be called for to determine the distance at which an encounter begins. A penalty applies on such checks, depending on the distance between the two individuals or groups, and an additional penalty may apply if the character making the Spot check is distracted (not concentrating on being observant).
This may also apply before Cyra and Gaston engage in which case an additional -11 modifier (115ft) to Gaston's spot modifier would apply in round 5.

Based on this, and the fact that Cyra's tactics depended on the fact that she would be sneaking and sniping, I would ask that you rework the fight (httphttp://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7838399&postcount=695/).

Calculation for Ashur looks correct above.

For the losers:

Tan's rewards are capped at 300xp/gp for a loss at ECL 3. He also brought in an ally for
-25%.
Auburn's rewards are also capped at 500 xp/ 533gp. No ally.

Tan fought an ECL 5 so would get normaly 1800xp /3(loss) /2(on his side) =300xp -25%=225xp and 1600gp/6 = 266gp -25% = 200gp

Auburn would get 1500xp/3(loss) /2(on her side) = 250xp and 1600/6 = 267gp.

If they had won Tan and Auburn would have gotten 3x these rewards...

Multiplayer Fights: If you face more than one gladiator, you calculate xp and gold for each opponent gladiator seperately, add the results together, and divide it by the number of allied gladiators you have.
Seems that the order of operations changes things. The point where the 25% should be deducted is before the division for the team. And the total from both team-mates is divided by 2, not the individual rewards.

Zeno v. Karen v. Thud is up. I noticed and fixed some mistakes, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were some I didn't notice.

Zeno: Force Screen is a shield bonus, so it doesn't stack with your shield.
Karen: I don't know how you got the +4 in the 2d4+4 unexpanded chain damage, or the +6 in the 2d6+6. Those should be +3 and +4, respectively.

That's another mistake I just noticed; I used the wrong dice for the chain. It won't change the outcome (probably), but I'll fix it anyway.

@Usurpator: Perhaps another example clarifies it. If I play a blind hider then my opponent doesn't get penalized because I cannot see him. Same for Shaz being unable to see invisible things. Harv flew out there in the wide open. He did not hide or even attempt to. Would you be able to spot invisible beings, you would have auto-spotted him.

Harv actively searched for Shaz. Shaz didn't. He didn't even attempt to. You cannot tell me sitting there and using your listen check to pinpoint me at great distance counts as 'actively searching me'. No sane pitlord - which Pittbull is - would let this 1 in 100 chance count as such. And this is where Pitlord Discretion comes into play. I would anytime make the same decision Pittbull did.

PS: Nothing's wrong with sniping but you still have to participate in the fight.
PPS: Not that it matters but I used 5 defensive buffs. The rest was there to find you, like Silent Image. And True Strike is an attack-accompanying spell.

@all: I'll begin to run my fights now. Remember to send any changes in Pitlords or Fight Outcomes to the Pitlords account. Oh and visit the Council once in a while ;)

At first glance I'm happy with the fight.

As for the comment addressed to me at the end of the fight. I've looked into the HD and BAB of a psicrystal very closely when I built the character. The best that I can see indicates that psicrystals do not use their masters BAB or HD. Instead psicrystals have HD equal to their masters level counting only levels in psion and wilder. A psicrystal advances as a construct of their HD, and they get feats BAB, and skills with those HD. In these ways a psicrystal is different from a familiar. Psiwarriors kind of get the shaft when it comes to their psicrystals.

The values are correct since the spiked chain is a twohanded weapon, so you get 1.5*Str bonus to damage.
In case you wondering: The Spiked Chain doesnt count as a light weapon, even while it can be used with Weapon Finesse so you DO get the 1.5*Str bonus.
And while Im ok with it because I won anyway, Im still wondering why you didnt disarm Thud instead of tripping him like I wrote in the tactics.

This is in the rules of gladius.

If you lose the fight, you get only 1/3 of the XP you would have gotten if you had won it. Also, you can never get more XP than 100 * (your current ECL) by losing a fight. For example, if you are ECL 12 and you lose against an ECL 15 gladiator, you should gain (10,800/3) = 3,600 XP. However, the rule limiting XP in case of a loss cuts that down to 1,200 XP gained.

(bold added for emphasis)
Max exp for a loss is 100*(your ECL) before ally adjusments.

@Book5

In a team fight, the winning team each gets 1 winner's reward for each gladiator on the other team divided by team members on their side.
Likewise for he losing team only with loser rewards.

Since it was an equal ECL fight with equal numbers on each team,
that means the winners each get a regular win award for their ECL and
the losers each get a regular loss award for their ECL.
Book5

OK, I may have to take this to the tavern, but since it effects Tan's rewards I should mention it here.

No one can have more than ECL*100 for loosing, but Tan lost an additional -25% off that. Couldnt it work that the Rewards vs ECL five get the -25% and Then my reward cap shaves that off at 300?

If that is the order then when Tan is ECL 4 he could challenge ECL 5s, take two dogs into the fight, and still not suffer that much of a penalty even when he looses.

And what about the hunter/all vs all group fights, you get more than the standard rewards for those fights.

Thanks for the rerun. I guess especially the last turns (post round 15) were probably quite anoing.

Let's see what my opponents say about it.

edit ... with the awards, I agree with Sindorin and Sunwolf

edit2: Yes, I would like one verification about the xp/gp I have given, too.

1 character level 5 wins vs 1 character level 5 and one level 3 with a CR1 ally.

So the thinks:
-Does the bonus from an opponents ally be relative to your level or your opponents level? As far as the rules go, I think it is the opponents (and not yours as I thought first.)
-Do a level 3 and a level 5 character share equally?
-When is the cap for lower level characters fighting higher level characters aplied?
-And when comes the penalty for the ally?

I try to address every concern that comes up concerning fights I run. With that fight, Thud couldn't pelt her with his bow because of her tower shield. Thus I fell back on the melee option provided, which ended rather tragically and rather quickly. However, I have to edit anyway because I missed Zeno's Diehard feat. I feel like a hypocrite; I complain whenever someone doesn't notice Sam has Diehard, and then I go and miss it on another character.

She had a tower shield. It looks to me like you used ranged attacks as long as it was reasonable, but if you stayed at range, she could take full cover behind the shield, and you wouldn't be able to shoot her. I suppose in round 6 you could have backed off instead of moving in to attack and tried to run her expansion out. On the other hand you were also raging, and you'd end up fatigued by the time you ran her out of power points.

Also, when looking over the fight I noticed your attributes are wrong on Thud McSmash. It looks like you only spent 32 points, and you can spend 36. I guess you're allowed to not spend them all, but you might want them. :D

Diehard was edited in to the three-way fight. It made Thud use one more arrow. That is the only change it made. Also, it could be argued that Zeno should have raged. If he did, he would be at -11 instead of -17 when he died, so no change from that either.

Thank you for the explanations. I'll try to do better with my tactics next time.

Speaking of overflowing fights, this is my first week in the CoCo, but I am very familiar with 3.5 rules and I know from observation how to Pitlord a fight.

I PMed the pitlords asking to pitlord a fight next week, but I would be happy to pitlord a fight this week also.

I will be checking my PMs all tonight and all tomorrow, so if someone wants to assign me a fight I will take it with gusto.

I dont agree. He specifically wrote in his tactics to use psionic shot only under one of the noted situations with no exceptions, and none of the noted situations was clearly there. Also using psionic shot when having a distance penalty to attack is probably not such a good idea.

That was exception #3.

"The opponent is going to close to melee in the next round anyway."

Given how freakishly FAST some people can move (like 120+ feet a round in some cases), having a penalty to shot is better than no shots at all. Barbarians, monks, and mounted people especially.
That's why I make no mention of any sort to closing the distance. And I didn't know he wanted a long ranged fight (since that makes his sneak attack useless as a rogue), so I expected him to close the distance fast.

And as soon as I get Far Shot or enough cash to put the Distance enhancement on my crossbow (or both), it won't matter. But first I need to save up to work on my defense.

Methos => Kracknol => Maven us up.

It is here. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7863532&postcount=710)

Some things...

A tattoo cannot be activated by another part unless the owner of the tattoo is unconscious. So the psicrystal cannot activate the force screen or the vigor for Kracknol.

• A character can trigger the effects of another’s psionic tattoo if the other wearer is unconscious. It is a full-round action to find, touch, and concentrate on an unconscious creature’s tattoo in order to tap it.

If the psicrystal is going to be active in this fight, then it needs to have it's own initiative count, because it's actions affect this fight. No mention was made in Kracknol's tactics regarding holding initiative to act near his psicrystal, nor were there any to have the psicrystal hold. It should be acting independently on it's own initiative count.

Also, I don't believe that Maven surrendering means that the rewards for her automatically go to the winner. Since this is a unique situation, where no one can claim her as a kill, we are probably going to have to get a ruling on that. But since she is bringing in allies, I believe that both Kracknol and Methos benefit from the 25% addition to their rewards, not just one of us.

Let's see what my opponents say about it.Well....honestly, I didn't expect to win. Between me not knowing much about writing tactics for a Wizard and the nature of both Validi and Noko it looked pretty dismal from the gate. Hindsight is 20/20 and all.....I shouldn't have wasted so much time buffing and attempted to blast Noko out of the sky (via Aranor) immediately with Greefe playing the role of bodyguard to keep Validi from taking Aranor down so quickly.
Now that the fight is more in the realm of my Gladiator, there are some things that look incorrect to me, like my AC being 12 when it should be closer to 18 (from Force Screen and armor) even after Rage and SoF+2 ran out, and a few of my attack rolls look wrong. But this doesn't change the fact that Aranor was eliminated early and therefore does little to change the outcome of the match. I should've also put in a surrender clause in the tactics....there is little chance (save a few crits) that Greefe would be able to take down the Tricksy Pixie by his lonesome, and I would have probably surrendered after the Rage ended since it lowers my damage output from 7-14 (1d8+6) to 3-10 (1d8+2)....which means a big fat donut for damage output. That's the main reason I didn't choose to 2WFight Noko (Validi, yes...he's a much easier target)....something else that should've been stated in my tactics.
Congrats to Noko and Validi. Good fight!
Humble apologies to Aranor....for using up so many of your expendables. :(

All masterwork items are DC 20. Admantine arrows would be masterwork according to the write up of Admantine. Therefore, they should be DC 20.

Kracknol's psicrystal is using crawling tattoo's not Kracknol's tattoo's. If you look at the equipment on Kracknol. You will see that he has no tattoo's at all. His psicrystal carries a few and uses them targeted on Kracknol. The attack by the crawling tattoo is an automatic hit and happens at the end of the crytals turn. The crystal is mounted on Kracknol, so it is implicit that the mount acts in conjunction with the rider. The initiative will not effect the outcome in any way even if it is calculated independantly. If the crystal acts after you do on round 8 then no change, and if it acts before you do on round 8 then both of your attacks that round miss. As is stands the crystal acts after you do, so no effect on the fight at all. If we want to get nitpicky I can point out that Luni shorted Kracknol on damage in round 11. He should cause 2d8+9+6d6 instead of the listed damage. That justs makes Methos more dead, so not worth bringing it up realy. Methos was realy lucky infact. He scored way above average damage and way above average attack rolls, but it was not enough in the end.

As for rewards, you have a point there. I'm not sure if the maximum rewards apply here, if so then Methos is limited to 400gp/xp for the battle. Those more informed and experienced than I will know what to do.

Crawling tattoos act in all ways like regular tattoos except where stated. They are subject to that same restriction. You can't activate another person's tattoo...regular or crawling...unless they are unconscious.

However, as Sauro pointed out, the tattoos are on the psicrystal, not him, so that portion of my point is moot.

Crawling tattoos resemble standard psionic tattoos, but their effects are often harmful rather than beneficial. Like a psionic tattoo, a crawling tattoo can be scribed only with a power of no higher than 3rd level that targets one or more creatures. Exceptions are the body adjustment power, which can be scribed even though it affects only the manifester, and telepathy (compulsion) powers, which cannot be scribed at all. Powers that normally have an area affect only one target if scribed in a crawling tattoo. Powers with an experience point requirement cannot be scribed into a crawling tattoo. Otherwise, crawling tattoos are treated as psionic tattoos until they are activated by the wearer.
The wearer of a crawling tattoo can tap the tattoo as a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity, mentally specifying a target (to which the wearer must have line of sight). Instead of manifesting its stored power, the tattoo animates, drops to the ground, and scuttles toward the target. The original wearer need no longer concentrate on the tattoo once animated.
The animated tattoo moves toward its designated target in the same round when it is activated. Treat it as a Fine construct that has AC 18, 10 hit points, a hardness of 5, speed 30 feet, and a bonus on attack rolls equal to the wearer’s manifester level + his key ability modifier. Crawling tattoos, unlike true constructs, are subject to illusions, darkness, fog, and similar effects. Should the target be killed, teleport away, or otherwise absent itself before the animated tattoo reaches it, the wearer can reclaim the tattoo. If it is destroyed, a crawling tattoo shatters and evaporates.
A crawling tattoo must enter the target’s square to attack and thus provokes attacks of opportunity as it passes through the target’s threatened area. The tattoo makes one touch attack per round thereafter until it strikes its target or is destroyed. On a successful attack, the power scribed in the crawling tattoo affects the target if the target fails the appropriate saving throw; however, powers that normally allow a Reflex saving throw automatically affect the touched target. Crawling tattoos can ferry beneficial powers as well as harmful ones, and a target can allow the tattoo’s touch attack to succeed if he or she desires.

@ Sauro: None of these issues is fight affecting...I would have said if they were. But the tattoo thing is something I brought up because activating a tattoo provokes attacks of opportunity, which means I could take attacks against your psicrystal, since it is in a threatened space. This is more for your information than mine....it's a nice trick to use, but if can have its drawbacks. For instance...to avoid the AoO, it would have to "dismount" you and leave your space, which could cause a delay in you getting help from it at some point. Or, if it stays and takes the AoO, it runs the risk of being destroyed and then you lose help later in a battle. That's why I brought it up. None of my points were going to change anything regarding the fight, because there is no way to keep your hit from connecting (believe me, I looked LOL).

@ Luni: Let me know how the rewards get changed, if at all.

@SauroGrenom: A couple thing before the fight gets too deep.

1) In favor of my opponent, I can neither rapid shoot nor move when I am sniping. It clearly defines me as only being able to use one attack before hiding, and hiding is a move action in and of itself.

2) Penalties on spot and listen for distance are not accounted for, not that it seems to be mattering that much.

3) I did ask to not attack when within 50 ft as seems to be happening.

I also want to mention. You have done a couple things wrong.

F: Starts (-4,-3) with bow in hand. He is adjacent to his opponent, and decides it would be best to move away slowly at 1/2 movement 27 and the orc cannot possibly detect your footfalls. He moves to (-2,-5) and snipes the orc again with two arrows 11,19. One arrow hits for 10hp damage. He rehides 19vs 14 success then takes a 5' step behind the corner ending at (-1,-4)

In this particular instance, you half moved him to 5ft from me. Then rapid shot after moving more then 5ft. Then moved 5ft after moving.

In order to do this action:

Snipe is a move equivalent action to re-hde.
Rapid shot is a Full round action that allows a 5ft step.
And It would be impossible to rehide in this instance as he was still in a spot at the end that he would have been observed. By rules of hide he is unable to rehide at that location.

Not to mention technically, his character should never moved within 50ft of me. And Gorak will delay in the center of the arena for as long as it takes my opponent to come out and play with me. I will shoot the crowd every 10 rounds so that they point out I am in the center of the arena as per my tactics. The reason for this as you can tell is I cannot spot a hidden elf who is 5ft from me using camoflague.

Therefore, technically. he has to sneak close to me and shoot me.. or circle to whole arena to the otherside and take a shot at me. By his tactics he should be doing that instead of coming into melee range. He understands the orc in melee will kill hiim very quick and doesn't want to do that. This should be an easy fight for him as long as I don't get lucky on a couple of shots.

Actually, he said front right pillar. This is still within the 180ft charge range and in line of sight of Valkin. The start position is wrong but the final result is exactly the same. Vivi is killed before he gains his footing.

Adamantine is so costly that weapons and armor made from it are always of masterwork quality.

So to answer your question - you MUST make them masterwork, which means DC20 and a list price of 60gp per arrow (30gp per arrow crafted).

@MysticMonk2005 - about the team fight. You seem to have forgotten about Khoronus's mount when doing the awards for the fight. They should be as follows:

Khoronus earns 300xp/gp -25% = 225xp/gp
Zelos earns 300xp/gp
Faelto and Leif earn (900 + (900 +25%))/2 = 1013gp/xp

Also, Faelto and Leif are both making money from skills - Faelto for 61gp and Leif for 57gp. I can't speak to my opponents earning money - but you can check their character sheets.

Shakari vs. Raskos is up. I'm not happy with the result, but I saw no other option.
I think you can safely continue the fight till the end realy. Inside the entangle, Raskos is actually protected from the clumbsy croc. There is a very good chance that the crock will get entangled before it can get into melee with Raskos. Especially since the croc doesn't know where raskos is at the moment so it is unlikely to walk directly toward raskos and has a wimpy reflex save. It cannot run, and it will only be able to move 20' as a full move because the effect limits movement. It should be fairly likely that the croc will have atleast 2 reflex saves while in the entangle and that may capture the beast.

There are a couple things that are worth considering. First Shakari does have LOS to Raskos at the end of the first round. But the distance is 185' and she would need to make a spot check vs DC18 or 19 to spot Raskos at that distance. Also the durration on the entangle is too long. It should only be 30 rounds because Shakari is a 3rd level druid. If the croc comes at Raskos, he has tons of short range phrenic powers and spells that will fry the beast also if Shakari chooses to attack with ranged weapons while the croc is closing, then Raskos can cast obscuring mist and get cover from that. He does have a pearl of power, so there are atleast two magic missiles that he could use. I didn't forsee this possibility, so i didn't write tactics for it but Raskos does have a scroll of mage hand and that would allow him a fairly long range on a shocking grasp if the spell is recovered with a pearl. Also Scathers is attacked for entering Shakari's space in round 4, but no attack is made by Scathers. If the raven enters my opponent's space I assume it is to attack not just draw AoO's. Shakari does have 20 cold iron arrows, I don't know if that's enough to grant the shocking grasp bonus for attacking opponents carrying lots of metal. Another point is that although you are follwing my tactics to a T, it would make sense for Raskos to climb up a wall as his move action in round 3. It is kind of silly for the intelligent elf to stand around in the entangle while he has an option to avoid the effect. As the fight currently stands Raskos does nothing with his move action that round. On the wall, he is not effected by the entangle.

Cheers,

This Fight
This was a good and close fight. My only question is, would Bastion have known where to move the sphere of flame onto?

It makes the difference between losing/winning and since I am invisible versus Basion, I think it would be worth rolling. And, as per my instructions my character goes out of his way to make sure Bastion can't locate him while he's blind. Is it possible we could get this slight modification in there? It might mean I could still win.

Cheers,
SauroGrenom
Objections noted. I'll start with the fixes after I get back from French class. One objection I disagree with, though, is the LOS objection. Raskos has no cover (and he has not acted yet), so he cannot hide. If he cannot hide, it is an auto-spot. That is the way I have always run it, and if memory serves this is the first objection I've had on the subject.
As to the other points, I can only plea exhaustion; the fight was posted at midnight my time after a very long day.

It is my unerstanding that even if you have LOS and there is no hiding taking place that you need a spot check to notice people who are far away. This comes from the following section of the SRD:
Spot checks may be called for to determine the distance at which an encounter begins. A penalty applies on such checks, depending on the distance between the two individuals or groups, and an additional penalty may apply if the character making the Spot check is distracted (not concentrating on being observant).

Condition Penalty
Per 10 feet of distance –1

I've been screwed by this before with a fight that Book5 was running, so I thought that it was generally accepted. Basically it means that you auto spot your opponent if they are not hiding and are within 10' for every +1 on your spot check. I may be wrong, but if so please counter with passages from the rules thread or SRD.

Huan?
Unfortunately, yes, Bastion's saw Savour's last position before being blinded, and technically no visual is needed to re-direct the sphere (ToK mentioned use Eddie as a guide for him, but I was not sure what he meant). Even if this is discussed further, Savour's only form of attack was the bow, and with the eagle in melee, Savour would take an AoO every round, plus the eagle's regular attack. Bastion is blind and out of spells so he pretty much must depend on his eagle (I already accounted for invisibility when calculating attack and AC). With the eagle's decent attack and Savour entangled, its likely Savour would have fallen while trapped anyway.

Additionally, once Bastion was blinded, Savour was stuck in the Entanglement anyway so there was no way to dodge, my friend. Another way of looking at it was not using those two rounds to cast and instead use them to move out of the entangle. If we had done it that way (while still preserving the rolls), Savour used his two good saves to get out of the first entangle (but, while this is happening, Bastion uses his Pearl of Power, re-casts Entangle, and Savour is stuck again). It literally would not have changed a thing.

The real win/loss factor was the starting positons. Had Savour not started in his top-left (or anywhere else in the front row), its likely this fight may have gone either way.

Tips for the future: Buy a CLW potion or two (with low HP, recovery items should be a buffer), as well as backup scrolls of longe range offensive spells (those could have made all the difference). Also, try to start battle from the back row of your square, so as to minimize being spotted before your plan takes off.

Hmm. I can't find it either. The psicrystal can always delay to do it things after Kracknol, as it has 6 rounds of inaction.

@Tok: Tactics dead. Need new ones. :)

Well...unless you can provide a source that says that allies always act on initiative counts of their masters that overrides this...

Initiative Checks: At the start of a battle, each combatant makes an initiative check. An initiative check is a Dexterity check. Each character applies his or her Dexterity modifier to the roll. Characters act in order, counting down from highest result to lowest. In every round that follows, the characters act in the same order (unless a character takes an action that results in his or her initiative changing; see Special Initiative Actions).
If two or more combatants have the same initiative check result, the combatants who are tied act in order of total initiative modifier (highest first). If there is still a tie, the tied characters should roll again to determine which one of them goes before the other.
...then an initiative check needs to be rolled for the psicrystal. Here's why: If the psicrystal's initiative is after Methos', then for what Kracknol wanted to do (as Sauro already stated), he would have to delay until his psicrystal goes, which would put him after Methos also. That flip flops the order of actions in every round. What that will do is give me an extra attack in that last round before the uber hit connects. If both attacks in the flurry hit and both do average damage, Kracknol is unconscious before that hit ever lands.

So an initiative check for the psicrystal is needed. If it is higher than Methos, then nothing changes (except possibly the rewards, based on what Cat rules).

So if you wanna add a roll into the invisibile castle record and post it here (or in the fight, whichever is easier), that would be super.

Actually Gorax can spot someone from as far away as 220' (if he rolls a 20 on the spot check) because his spot is +2. He won't auto spot someone unless they are within 30' because his minimum spot check is 3. Even so he has a very good chance of spoting opponents from greater distances averaging about 130'.

No, no, no. Kracknol is not delaying anywhere to wait for his crystal to buff his AC. That is not in his tactics and is an unreasonable adaption of his tactics. Kracknol wants to hit you, and when ever his crystal gets an action, it is able to acivate its tattoo and put the buff on Kracknol. That would happen either before Methos acts in round 8 (thus causing a miss there) or after Methos in round 8 (changing nothing) or before Kracknol's action in round 9 (thus not changing anything). In all cases when the crystal's action fits, there is no change in the outcome. Realistically the crystal should have readied an action for if Kracknol missed his charge, and thus acted before methos could attack in the 8th round. The increased AC at that time would cause the attacks in that round to miss. Also since the crystal is mounted on Kracknol, it can easily take ride checks to gain cover against attacks from Methos. If we look in the "Rules of the Game" we see that rider and mount take actions in the same place in initiative, so the crystal should be taking actions at the same time as Kracknol in the initiative. Remember that the crystal is mounted on Kracknol and has a fairly high ride check.

Thank you for illustrating my point. If the psicrystal is using you as a mount, and it gets a lower initiative than yours, then your initiative would have to be delayed to it's count. It's count does not get elevated to yours. You did state in your tactics that if the psicrystal was not off killing Maven, that it would be mounted on you. You stated here (above) that it is using you as a mount. Since you are it's mount, if it's initiative is lower than mine, your initiative would be delayed so that it can use you as a mount. That mount bit is straight from your tactics. So, for it to use you as a mount, your initiative would have to be delayed until it goes, or it would have to delay until you go, whichever is the lower. If it's initiative puts it behind me, then that also puts you behind me, and gives me one more round of attacks.

Well no, Actually if the crystal moves Kracknol's initiative to after yours, then you loose attacks in round 8 and instead gain those same attacks in the last round. As it currently stands, you are acting after Kracknol. If you act before him, then in round 8 you get no attacks, and you gain attacks at the beginning of the last round. Also if Kracknol and the crystal act together, then one of the hits you previously scored become a miss because of the buff that went up on the crystal's action. THat will further increase Kracknol's HP.

All the more reason for the initiative roll to be done. In round 8, if I have not seen you, then my actions would change. Depending on listen checks, my action would be to either fire at a space I suspect you are in, or keep moving. So there again...the fight could be altered significantly depending on what the psicrystal's initiative is. We can speculate all we want, but all we really need is that one roll. The rest is pure conjecture as that roll could cause nothing to change. But since it could cause things to change, it should be done.

Question: is 20 feet up effectively outside of an Entangle spell?
That's a good question, so I did some quick digging.

Entangle Spell:Entangle
Transmutation
Level: Drd 1, Plant 1, Rgr 1
Components: V, S, DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Long (400 ft. + 40 ft./level)
Area: Plants in a 40-ft.-radius spread
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: Reflex partial; see text
Spell Resistance: No
Grasses, weeds, bushes, and even trees wrap, twist, and entwine about creatures in the area or those that enter the area, holding them fast and causing them to become entangled. The creature can break free and move half its normal speed by using a full-round action to make a DC 20 Strength check or a DC 20 Escape Artist check. A creature that succeeds on a Reflex save is not entangled but can still move at only half speed through the area. Each round on your turn, the plants once again attempt to entangle all creatures that have avoided or escaped entanglement.
Note: The effects of the spell may be altered somewhat, based on the nature of the entangling plants.

Note how its area type is a 'Spread' with nothing particularly noted about its spread type. Well, let's look at what 'Spread' really means:

Under 'Area' under 'Magic Basics': Burst, Emanation, or Spread: Most spells that affect an area function as a burst, an emanation, or a spread. In each case, you select the spell’s point of origin and measure its effect from that point.
A burst spell affects whatever it catches in its area, even including creatures that you can’t see. It can’t affect creatures with total cover from its point of origin (in other words, its effects don’t extend around corners). The default shape for a burst effect is a sphere, but some burst spells are specifically described as cone-shaped. A burst’s area defines how far from the point of origin the spell’s effect extends.
An emanation spell functions like a burst spell, except that the effect continues to radiate from the point of origin for the duration of the spell. Most emanations are cones or spheres.
A spread spell spreads out like a burst but can turn corners. You select the point of origin, and the spell spreads out a given distance in all directions. Figure the area the spell effect fills by taking into account any turns the spell effect takes.

Verdict: No, being 20 feet up (in the spell's area) does not dodge the Entangle spell. Once again, Entangle is fearsome.

That is unless a participant is trying to hide.Shrug, as you said spot is used (in addition to detecting hidden opponents) to notice someone at a great distance before an encounter begins. Technically all arena encounters are considered started already because we all roll initiative...there is no opportunity for a surprise round.

If you have a clear and unobstructed line of sight to a character in the arena I don't see why you cannot automatically see them. If your idea for this rule was true it would apply all the time...it would not make sense to have it only apply once at the beginning of a fight.

Two characters are already aware that their opponent is somewhere in the arena, why should they have to roll a spot check to spot them for the first time? Why not the 2nd time? 3rd time? Or why have to roll it at all?

Draft 2 is up. No change in outcome, although Raskos used another scroll and Shakari another arrow.
Snommelp,

I don't understand why Raskos went down to the floor. He can crawl along the cieling with no problem. There are a number of pilliars around where it would be easy for Raskos to head along the top of the Arena and come down the pilliar and be in range for his ray attack. One of the major features of his strategy is that he will not be on the ground where all of her pets are at and he may be able to attack from cover. By going to the ground Raskos is practically surrendering. He has other options, come now why even cast the spider climb if I was just going to head out to reveal my position(by attacking) where they could get to me and I'm realy far from a wall. There are two pilliars that Raskos would use to come down from the celing hold onto a pilliar atleast 20' feet up and be in range for his ray attack. He should use those.

As for the idea that Entangle works on the walls, you are correct about the shape of a spread area of effect. But Entangle only effects areas where plants are available. It does not work on a stone floor. We can assume that when a druid is in the Arena, that the ground is grassy, but the walls as well? That's just streatching it a bit too far in my opinion. And our description of the standard Arena Map tells us that the walls, pillars and cieling are stone. Please Snommelp, let's be savy about how Raskos moves into position and keep him off the ground.

I have a question concerning Black Tentacles.

If they are grappling someone, can the tentacles be hit by a ranged attack, as if they were a creature?

Black Tentacles
Conjuration (Creation)
Level: Sor/Wiz 4
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Area: 20-ft.-radius spread
Duration: 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
This spell conjures a field of rubbery black tentacles, each 10 feet long. These waving members seem to spring forth from the earth, floor, or whatever surface is underfoot—including water. They grasp and entwine around creatures that enter the area, holding them fast and crushing them with great strength.
Every creature within the area of the spell must make a grapple check, opposed by the grapple check of the tentacles. Treat the tentacles attacking a particular target as a Large creature with a base attack bonus equal to your caster level and a Strength score of 19. Thus, its grapple check modifier is equal to your caster level +8. The tentacles are immune to all types of damage.
Once the tentacles grapple an opponent, they may make a grapple check each round on your turn to deal 1d6+4 points of bludgeoning damage. The tentacles continue to crush the opponent until the spell ends or the opponent escapes.
Any creature that enters the area of the spell is immediately attacked by the tentacles. Even creatures who aren’t grappling with the tentacles may move through the area at only half normal speed.
Material Component: A piece of tentacle from a giant octopus or a giant squid.

I'm going to take that as a 'Don't even try'. Otherwise, since they are spell effect with no stat provided for HP or AC, its implied these things cannot be targeted at all. Go figure.

I would say that yes -- the tentacles can be the random target of someone shooting into a grapple (ie tentacles holding someone). They are 10feet long and while each one may not be that big there are a lot of them. Of course, you won't hurt the tentacles that way.

Ok... Umm...
Fjords fight. I stuck in first thing in the tactics "TAKE COVER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE". Fjord nicely stood out in the open casting a full round spell waiting to be sniped. He had a move action, why didnt he use it? That was just sad. Cmon.... just because I said "Cast when I see him", doesnt mean "ignore everything else THAT WOULD KEEP ME ALIVE PAST ROUND 2!"

Chilis fight... I dont expect him to win. But I said snipe from cover, not sit like a rock. Dont bother running it again, since I didnt actually say DONT sit like a rock... but jeez. "Hes a wilder, go wild" turned into "bring a snack and set up a tent, hes campin for 11+ rounds." I somehow think this may have turned into part of the Harvester vs Shazzelin arguement here, from the little 'actively searching' comment.

Ch'ch'ili vs Barthleby
Hagrid+Brilf vs Monsters [Sheets]
Hagrid+Brilf vs Monsters [Fight]

Roster will be updated on wednesday. I won't be at home tomorow. Please remember to remove all unnecessary spoilerblocks! Only use them for things that are not important for the fight, and also not for fight results! Thanks.

Ok...

Your tactics also state "As soon as Fallon is found read the scroll for a batch of Fiendish Monster Scorpions," which is the action that was taken. It so happened you didn't have to move to find Fallon.

Then again I could be a bit biased in this discussion. :D

I guess it wasn't very exciting, but thank you for running it. I did forget to mention: Nexa has a 20% XP/gp. penalty due to uneven levels, so the rewards should be 360 XP/480 gp.

You have a MS modifier of +3. She has a Listen modifier of +11. Had you gone over across the ceiling, you never could have gotten into range because the ray has a range of 30 (actually, I think I made a mistake and it should be 25) and she wanted to stay 60 feet away, which she could easily do if she heard you moving down a pillar. The ground was your only choice, according to the tactics that I was trying very hard to follow.

Here is a link to the fight, however the rewards might change. We are waiting on a ruling from Cat on how Mavens' surrender should be awarded, and also whether we both benefit from the 25% penalty that Maven receives, or if only the person who takes the reward for her does.

Biased? No way, I know your much too honest :D
But seriously, every second line in my tactics went something like "Take cover. Summon Monsters. Take Cover. Sing. Take more cover." With tactics as short as mine, repeating Take Cover should stand out a bit.. Its not like it was a readied action. Unless you can ready actions as a prebuff.

Now that I think of it... Can you ready actions as a prebuff? Ill have to think of a way to win before my own first round initiative if you can :D

Nope....a readied action can only be a standard action....and readying elapses at the end of the round. What you would have to do first is invent a way for 1 round to last 16 hours. Methinks Time Stop would be a good place to start LOL

so... um... at what point should i be concerned that my fight (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7866278&postcount=716) isn't done yet? Basically your fight will likely be reassigned to a new pitlord tomorrow, meaning you lose a week because the pitlord messed up and no one took his fight. IMO there needs to be some sort of plus to this for people who don't want to lose a week, perhaps all gladiators get 1.5x a loser's share... but that proposal remains to be seen.

If I were you, I would PM TelinArtho about picking up the fight. He already volunteered to pick up late fights, and since the tactics have been posted, he can grab them and do it if he has time. It's very likely that if you PM him now with a link to that fight post, he may be able to get it up before pairings tomorrow, assuming he has the time, of course. That's probably your best bet. Otherwise, as Sindorin said...the fight will get held over and reassigned.

It's kind of depressing to have my first two fights in the arena be losses, but I'm learning from my experiences.Don't sweat it. Greefe (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7081407) started out just like that as well. When I was the NKOTB, there was so much I didn't understand. I actually started Greefe from scratch again after he lost his first fight....so technically, I lost my first three. If you read the fights of the other Gladiators and the tactics given, you'll soon learn what works and what doesn't. It's just a small learning curve.
Here's to meeting Mr. McSmash in the arena sometime in the future! *raises goblet*

2) Penalties on spot and listen for distance are not accounted for, not that it seems to be mattering that much.

3) I did ask to not attack when within 50 ft as seems to be happening.

???

I also want to mention. You have done a couple things wrong.

Ok, a few things wrong with the gorak vs Faetaure fight.

Round 3
Faetaure
Half move (move equivalent)
Rapid shot (full round action)
5ft step and Hides (move equivalent action to snipe)

Round 4
Faetaure
Half move (move equivalent)
Rapid shot (full round action)
5ft step and Hides (move equivalent action to snipe)

Round 5
Gorak has LOS.. as he is adjacent gets an autospot on opponent by tactics should find himself in melee and quickdraw axe and swing.

Faetaure
Rapid shots and hides without moving 5ft from adjacent to me, it is impossible to hide in the next square to someone without moving. They are observiing those squares pretty well and you cannot hide while being observed.

OK, I didn't read the feat description of rapid shot carefully enough, and I didn't notice that using it is a full round action. Nor did I read the sniping action carefully enough. That will decrease some of the damage the Gorax takes. But you can hide in any square where you have cover against your opponent. So you can hide in an adjacent square if there is cover. In every case the elf has cover from Gorax's position, I did take account for the effect this has on the orc's AC. I'll put changes up ina few minutes.

Edit,
Changes are finished.

Thanks, these are all good explinations. I'm satisfied with the fight.

It's kind of depressing to have my first two fights in the arena be losses, but I'm learning from my experiences.
My first fight ended in one attack, and my char wasn't even able to do anything about it. He got crit by an invisible attacker *cough*angosh*cough*. Then my second char didn't win till he was level 6 and was one lose from lvl 7. So I wouldnt feel too bad'.

Therefore, it might be a week delay as I can't take it next week. Very sorry to everyone involved.

I would say that yes -- the tentacles can be the random target of someone shooting into a grapple (ie tentacles holding someone). They are 10feet long and while each one may not be that big there are a lot of them. Of course, you won't hurt the tentacles that way.
I'm gonna disagree with both of you on this one. They do no represent a target value. There is no AC assigned, and no target to shoot. You'd be applying the same logic to someon in an entangle field, which IMO doesn't make sense either. What does make sense, is if you cannot target them, they have no AC, thus they are not valid targets. There isn't anything saying they can be targetted, dmg, or have an AC.

I'll put changes up ina few minutes.

Edit,
Changes are finished.

Two minor changes with the fight are needed and i am fine with it.

First just so you know. Gorak actually did 8 damage to his opponent on round 4.
1d8+4 + 1 PBS feat + 2 fav enemy vs 1d8+4 Don't worry about that has no effect on the outcome of the fight.

Second as much as we want them to be in the ECL 4 league, they are only ECL 3. Therefore, their winnings/loosings are +900xp/+900gp and +300xp/+300gp.

- Tom Bollis1) Who's Tom and why should I trust him?

2) Black tentacles is a conjuration(creation) spell, so I would expect that the tentacles are a physical object.

3) Black Tentacles
I double checked the SRD and it dosn't say anywhere that it cannot be targeted. It just says that the tentacles are immune to damage of all types. I am tired though, I might have missed it. *edit* Just double checked. Not there.

I've seen this arguement before; that if the stats are missing you cannot interact in any way that would use those stats. I don't buy it.

But again, I'm tired and cranky.

4) To be a smarty pants: if the tentacles are only considered creatures for the purposes of grapple, then they are considered creatures for the purposes of grapple derivitive actions, such as targeting the creatures in a grapple. Since the tentacles are a creature while grappleing...

If SOMEONE would pick up the Dameon & Va'ria vs Gatekeeper & Aquin Team Fight right now, all four of us would be thankful. (VERY thankful if it was completed without faults before pairings).

I still have a copy of the tactics for the Dameon and Va'ria Team, I am just waiting for a pitlord to forward it to.

And about the Black Tentacle thing:
What I think Sunwolf was implying was that while the Tentacles cannot be targetted (yes, we all know they have no HP or AC)... for purposes of miss chance for firing into a grapple, they should be accounted for.

@Dr. Funk: Thanks for making the changes regarding hide and spot ...

However, I am wondering why you didn't apply any of Cyra's contingency tactics?

For example: round 8, Gaston sees Cyra and shoots, however Cyra's tactics specifically say that if Gaston is within 40ft (which he is at the beginning of round 9) then she should drop her crossbow, draw a tanglefoot bag and then use her burst ability (+10 speed for 3 rounds) to move away to cover. Then the following round (round 10) if he moves close again then she should throw the tanglefoot bag at him and if he is successfully entangled then snipe from cover.

Also: Cyra's tactics state that if she is hurt and hiding then she should use a tatto of vigor, yet she doesn't do this either.

As a further note, Gaston's tactics specifically say that you should try to keep a distance of 100ft between us at all times, yet Gaston continuously closes distance, ... again why?

I am a little perplexed as to why many of the tactics seem to have been disregarded?

Stormwind

P.S. Sorry if this sounds a bit negative, but I spent a lot of time considering Cyra's tactics and am a little perplexed as to why they weren't used.

Turned out to be a much shorter fight than I expected; My apologizes to MysticMonk and Snommelp in not giving them much time to update sheets; not that much was expended/etc.

Regarding Tatyana's fight; I guess I'll just let her go over and finish it next week. TelinArtho's offer was all well and good, but the fact of the matter is that I need to know what the ghouls will have for equipment before I can even begin to write tactics for the fight. Slight error in the fight...a rather large one. Deflect Arrows is still available to Sam while using a crossbow. You can hold a crossbow in one hand. There is no reason Sam cannot take his hand away from his crossbow, deflect an arrow, and then put his hand back on the crossbow.

Kracknol wins! He gains +1200 gp/xp + 400 gp/xp + 400 gp/xp = 2000 gp/xp + 12.5% = 2250 gp/xp. He used: Stones: Vigor [4]; Dissolving Weapon [3]; Animal Affinity [3]; Crawling Tattoos: Vigor [1]; Force Screen [1]. He also gains +84 gp for making a metal scuplture.

Methos comes in 2nd place. He gains +400 gp/xp + 12.5 % = 450 gp/xp. He used: Tattoos: Force Screen [1]; Inertial Armor [1]. He gains +84 gp for serving drinks afterwards.

If you finish the Anakala vs Talik fight before the deadline and I have not yet done up the ghoul fight (I'll be waiting for tactics from Gonbow) - it is all yours. Bear in mind though that there's only 2 hours until the deadline - so likely you wouldn't have time to run both.

Re: Ghouls

Monster fight equipment is NOT based on the treasure entries of the monsters in question so they DO have equipment. They are equiped as a gladiator of an ECL equal to their CR. (Odd... but monster fights are always odd).

Re: Crossbow and Deflect Arrows

Yes, he can shoot then switch to one hand... but he did not say to do so. Moreover the loading of a heavy crossbow is a full-round action that DOES take both hands.

Re: Flat-footed

Correct, that is true. So Lissa would likely use up one less arrow; I'll fix that later when i get the chance (I have about 10 minutes until class atm, no time to do it now).

Incorrect. The "Treasure" entry is what counts. Double Standard = twice what is listed on p127 DMG. None = none else all animals would have thousands of gold worth of equipment

I assumed it went without saying. After all, why take Deflect Arrows if I'm going to occupy his hands? It's a free action to remove or replace a hand on a weapon; common sense is to leave one hand open to deflect arrows. Must I write in every set of tactics "use free actions every round to facilitate my Deflect Arrows feat," or are you willing to use your own sense to realize that it's just plain stupid to act like that?

Since there is not much time before pairings, I would like to request that this fight be held over to next week to fix this egregious error.

this time you posted faster than I can edit. :embarrass

ok I will do that one.

you da man!! now the question is, will i beable to sneak a couple edits in between this completion and pairings... :D ;)
TelinArtho

11-30-05, 03:26 PM
You might not have full time to do so - but if you are still paired, you should send a quick PM to your opponent(s) and the Pitlord and let them know of the changes that should be taken into account. If the pitlord gives the okay (opponent as well), you can then update your character sheet in the character's thread to reflect it.

Luckily, the build for Anakala doesn't change much from fight to fight.

Something I might recommend to help you in the future....copy your character into a text file (I use Notepad), so that you can edit it offline. That way, if you have this type of situation happen again, where you are needing to edit just before deadline, you can edit the offline version anytime you want, and then just cut and paste the whole thing online when you are ready to set the character up for the week. I do it with all of my characters...lets me play with different ideas on equipment and expendables without actually changing anything.
Ayrynthyn

11-30-05, 03:38 PM
its all good... i have 98% of the edits in place in a text doc. Im just looking to restock, and bump the quantities of a few things, and pick up a [Ma] Profession tool (that i didnt know you could buy). Shouldnt be too bad. Im hoarding all my cash for a monks belt, so i try to stay frugal with the expendables as well. This would be the second week i was unable to update my sheet, so i hope i can sneak it in :)

sorry but I cant finish the fight before the deadline. Its just a too long fight. I think its obvious at this point that Telik will win but it could take many more rounds until he does.

Well, there's two things that I notice right off the bat:

Vent has 9 hit points - not 6

After casting SMII, Anakala wanted to cast Doom.

At this point, she will start casting Summon Monster II for a large centipede and follow it up with doom.

But the fight will just be finished past pairings - so that's fine.
TelinArtho

11-30-05, 04:21 PM
Also, in rounds 8 and 9 - how is it that Vent isn't able to find him with 100ft of movement when he is withdrawing at most 80ft (double move)? Certainly Vent could follow the path he took and find him on that shortest route with ease.

EDIT- with 80ft of movement from the withdraw, there is no way he can move from (-15,12) to (-4,22). The best he could do would be (-5,23) or (-3,20)

EDIT - also, Vent seems to be trying to hit an AC of 18 - where Talik's AC is only 16 (17 with dodge). Since you don't list the rolls for some of the later rounds - I want to make sure that this was taken into account.

Lastly, some of the positions near the end are off - so I don't know where Anakala is moving to (she is listed as moving, but her position doesn't change).

Lonewolf, you have time till I finish pairings. Write a PM to Pitlords asap when you're done. I can either pair them late or assign a monster fight.

HP of Vent corrected.
I mistakenly thought that Doom has a range of short. I will let her cast Doom now.

I will also correct the position. As you surely have noticed I became more hactic as time ran out.

Im working on the rest and hope I will be finished soon.

...boy im definatly not getting that vibe at all  Burning trough both alchemist fires, and several bolts, and down to 5 hp just to drop the elemental in round 12 is definintly sounding worst case scenario to me. (assuming i did at least 6 damage with that last bolt that is). Ahh well...

Question about the smoke stick... the description says

Smokestick

This alchemically treated wooden stick instantly creates thick, opaque smoke when ignited. The smoke fills a 10- foot cube (treat the effect as a fog cloud spell, except that a moderate or stronger wind dissipates the smoke in 1 round). The stick is consumed after 1 round, and the smoke dissipates naturally.

and Fog Cloud says..

Fog Cloud
Conjuration (Creation)
Level: Drd 2, Sor/Wiz 2, Water 2
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft. level)
Effect: Fog spreads in 20-ft. radius, 20 ft. high
Duration: 10 min./level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

A bank of fog billows out from the point you designate. The fog obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 5 feet. A creature within 5 feet has concealment (attacks have a 20% miss chance). Creatures farther away have total concealment (50% miss chance, and the attacker can’t use sight to locate the target).

...does that mean that there's a 20' radius Hemisphere of smoke ceneterd at-21,0 that lasts until round 67?

@Telin...re:AC, i was gonna mention not to forget my Dodge, so it should be 19 (+2 Combat Expertise, and +1 Dodge). Since the modifiers are not listed yet, it's hard to say where the 18s comin from (Combat Expertise and/or Dodge or any combination there of).

The fight is done.

I restarted it from the point I started to make really big mistakes(round8) and it definately didnt went Teliks way this time.
It really looked as if my dices didnt like you, sorry bout that.

about the smokestick:
You quoted a part in the smokestick description that you obviously didnt realized:

"The smoke fills a 10- foot cube "
and
"The stick is consumed after 1 round, and the smoke dissipates naturally."

So you only have a 10 foot cube which lasts 1 round.

i see the 10 cube part, but if the smoke only lasts 1 round, why include the bit about "A strong or Moderate wind disappates the smoke in 1 round" when doing nothing dissapates the smoke in 1 round as well?? (hence my boggle)

appreciate you running this last minute like this. If you could add the +57 gold from my profession:Dance as well, i think we're good

actually... i do have a few small beefs

just an FYI...

found here... (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/tt/20050509a)

Smokesticks Alchemical Item (Player's Handbook, page 128):

These alchemical items cost 20 gp and weight 1/2 pound. The smoke from it works like fog cloud. The duration isn't specified in the item's description. A good rule of thumb for DMs is to have it last until the end of the encounter (unless environmental effects are in place, such as a breeze that might dissipate it after several rounds or a gust of wind spell that clears it in a single round).

If I run out of bolts, or am forced into melee, use the Alchemist fire, and Acid at 10’. Draw my Siangham as part of a move and then Stunning Blow. From there on out use Flurry of blows to try and finish the deal.just wondering why that contingency didnt occur

Summons… if she summons on me, drop a smoke stick, avoid if possible, if not dodge, and full combat expertise till it’s dead or spell expires. To clarify, try not to engage the summoned, avoid it, takeing full cover from the smoke when availablewhile the centepede was out, i should have been full combat expertise. since there are no rolls showing after round 7 for either party, im not sure if this would have made a difference, but maybe...

@Lonewolf - the rewards for Anakala are slightly off. 25% of 900 is 225, not 150 - so she should have received only 675/675 before profession income.

@Ayrynthyn:

After Vent has closed with you, you will see that Talik tries to strike with an unarmed strike - this would be your stunning fist.

When withdrawing, you can't use combat expertise because you have to take an attack action to activate it - and more than that it has to be a melee attack action (check the feat description if you are unclear on this).

As to the smokestick issue - it fills a 10-foot cube and then you withdraw out of it. So I don't know what the issue is.

@Tellin

im with ya on all accounts, however

Re:Ranged... absolutely. However, once i was forced into a melee situation with vent (as i couldnt out run it), i should have droped the XBow, Drawn the [Ma]Saingham, and gone into "melee mode" (Stun then flurries)

Re:Withdraw... i'll be more explicite in my future tactics, but this is semi tied with the smoke stick stuff. My intent was to withdraw *into* the smoke. To use the smoke for concealment. The 20% miss chance, the ability for a new hide check, proximity to the corner wall of the start box, may have given me the opportunity to regroup and get back on the offensive...

Re:Smoke duration... this is semi-moot, as one good whirlwind from Vent would have cleard the smoke, but for future tactics it has meaning...

bottom line...this is why im here. To get a grasp of some of these more....esotiric rules. Im not questioning the outcome or the "how". Just looking to gain a little understanding :)

@loneWolf... thanks again. I still need my profession earnings noted on the fight (+57 GP Profession: Dance)

1. I didnt use Stunning fist vs Vent because elementals are immune to stunning.

2. I misinterpreted your tactics about how to deal with Vent. I thought you wanted to kill it with the xbow.

3. After closer reading: yes the smokestick should last longer than one round. But I honestly doubt that that would help you more in this situation.

4. The income from profession(dancer) is already noted in the fight.

5. I will correct the income for Anakala now.
Guildmaster (EYE)

12-01-05, 10:47 AM
No no... i *had* hoped to take out the elemental with the xbow. 9 HP should have required 2-3 hits. AC 17 vs. my +5 to hit should be one hit every 2-3 rounds. i had hoped for the elemental to be taken out by round 4-6, 8 worst case...definitly not 12+ :). The dice werent with me

thanks again
