Fights of the Week: November 29th

Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions Part 1 and Part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM Caterane will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Make sure that your character is not in prison (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=571107&goto=lastpost).

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need it, there is a nice template ready to use that will help.
You could find the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps very useful. You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
Another useful link is the Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Recent News and Developments
A big hand to Abyssal Stalker for the resurrection of the Gladius Weekly!

Comments & Concerns
Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread.
Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, and don't feed the pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play. Above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

I just posted in the other thread...send a PM if you haven't already...Cat apparantly hasn't read his yet and is making more work for himself.

@ Cat: If you read this, you need to read the PM I sent Pitlords about last weeks pairings. Do to some changes you made without telling anyone and then not being around to fix them after the fact, we had to fix things ourselves.....

Same thing...send a PM to Pitlords...Cat will read them eventually...hopefully before he does pairings....

Cat's realy buisy recently, so pairings may be a bit later than is usual. Don't be worried if something hasn't been updated on the typical time frame.

Is he hitting the end of the semester & has lots of papers to grade or something?

It's not the updates everyone is worried about...it's the fact that he appears to not have read his PM's yet on the Pitlords account, which contains some issues that he needs to know about prior to this week's pairings being completed.

I don't mind if the correct thing is done late. I'm less impressed when the incorrect thing is done early. :D I think he just must've missed seeing the Mithos vs. Maelosh fight post when he was looking through.

He's not messing with it this week, I guess...he just told me on IM that he's tired & is just doing to pairings now, and if I have any issues I should consult an elder.

I think he's overstressed. :(

The problem is that the issues from last week directly affect this week's pairings. If you are speaking with him in IM, let him know that.

@ other Elders: Do you have access to the Pitlords account? Because the issues from last week need to be corrected, or else this weeks pairings are going to get messed up as well...for instance I think Mithos Durral (Zevox) is now paired in two fights...one that was already completed, and one new one....and the fight that should have been voided from last week got held over....there are lots of issues that need to be fixed from last week.

I'd be more than happy to fix them myself, but I don't have access to the Pitlords account.

I have no time this week to answer questions or update the board. MindwandererB will take over for this week. He can make all decisions necessary to run the board during that time.

@ MWB: Since you get the job as sub GM this week, yer prolly gonna wanna read the PMs that have been sent to Pitlords and make some corrections. Some fights were held over that shouldn't have been, etc...things of that nature.
Pitlords

11-29-06, 05:43 PM
MWB here.

Yeah, I've seen the discussion. Looks like Cat fixed some things, but not others. I'll fix the pairings to make sure they make sense. Would all involved parties please check their credits as of right now to see if they're correct? Thanks.

Pairings note: I'm running the quest/mission for Osiris.

Jade of Krios (Gonbow) & Bulgar Stronghammer (TelinArtho) miniquest for fun : Vathelokai [Miniquest]I thought this was supposed to be a full quest. If Telin could confirm it either way, that would be great.

Wisp (c00lz3) vs. Zodiac (Vathelokai) : Erithmu [Cavern]Wow! The pairings rolls are getting wierd these days. That was the same fight Zodiac had on the last 2 fights of his cycle.

Rubicanti (TheMagister) vs. Montana (UserNamer) : DSugui [Forest] [Week 5]]Hey Dsugui. The fight is half done. Here
Vathelokai

11-29-06, 05:53 PM
Hmmm... I had no credit changes.

Should be +1 guild, +1 scribelord +1 questlord (osiris), +1 questlord (bulgar and jade) -1 droped fight last week.
NiQil

11-29-06, 05:56 PM
My credits are also incorrect...before pairings I was at 53, now I am at 52. I lose one for having a third character active, and gain one for prisonlords, so I should remain at 53.

Changes thus far:

Daniel Ocean (UserNamer) vs. Maelosh the Breaker (Hrothmund) : McJarvis [Arena]

Shreckentaum deJack (Etiquette_Gnome) vs. Unknown Monster : UserNamer [Arena]

(Assuming UserNamer is actually around these days.)

@ MWB: A couple of changes haven't been made yet to the roster and stuff from the Pitlords account that still need to be done.

In this post, which is the pairings post from last week, both the correct fight that McJarvis ran for Elb/Tessero and the incorrect one that Usernamer posted are linked after the fight. The last link that leads to the post UserNamer made needs to be deleted.

Elb Foraker and Tessero Valis both need to have their won/loss records corrected, as well as their power ratings. Elb should be 0-1 and Tessero should be undefeated.

Edit: Also, I am not sure if the Prison Update that Pitlords gets every week from Prisonlords was ever gone over...Alexander (UserNamer) is in prison, and shouldn't be, and Zerth Cenobite (Sjiggie) should be. So that may need to be done, and credits from that post issued, etc.

Yeah, that should be a full quest, not a miniquest...

@Pitlords

LEVEL 7 FIGHTS
Little Daisy[ECL8] (DSugui) vs. Tatyana (Gonbow) & Istima Telarc (Zevox) : Iced [Forest] [Inter-League]

LEVEL 8 FIGHTS
Featylec Elendi (Zevox) vs. Unknown Monster : Hirumajoe [Forest]

Shouldn't Daisy and Feat fight eachother, with Tatyana fighting Istima? Just wondering why there is a monster fight when there doesn't need to be one.

Edit: Ah, I got it. Daisy is incorrectly marked at ECL 8, and is actually in ECL 9.

Double Edit: Then on second glance... Istima seems to be ECL 6, not ECL 7... Did he just not get edited? Zevox?

Monster fights can occur at random (unfortunately), not just when there's no suitable opponent.

Hey CoCo folks-

I've been gone for a while, glad to see that things are still thriving here. I'm working on updating my 3 characters, but if you need a pitlord for a low-er level fight I'd love to start back up. I don't know where I'm supposed to announce that I can pitlord a battle - but I'll do it here.

No, hes ECL 6. He falls just short of level 7 after his mission (once penalties for his ally are accounted for - I need to get Sauro to change the mission record to account for that).

Annalina Vale (Zevox) & Istima Telarc (Zevox) & Relanex Thines (Macbrea) vs. Little Daisy[ECL9] (DSugui): Maraxus [Temple] [Inter-League]
:mymy: Ouch - 1x ECL vs 3x ECL-3... never liked those kinds of matches. Oh well, maybe with an evocation-specialist wizard and a pretty durable psion on the same team it won't be too lopsided.

Mithos Durrol (Zevox) vs. Maya Redwine (MindwandererB) : UserNamer [Arena]
LOY fight :king: ! Heh, sorry McJarvis, but Mithos isn't throwing this just so we can get taxes - Maya has to earn them fair and square ;) .

@ Hirumajoe - Featylec will need burglary options for the monster (if any) once its rolled, just to make sure you know.

I'll work on tactics for Mithos vs Maya and Ceilia vs Ventr tonight - they're the easiest. Others should be along tomorrow.

Oh well, maybe with an evocation-specialist wizard and a pretty durable psion on the same team it won't be too lopsided.Yeah, sorry about that. The large collection of Zevox characters around there limited my options somewhat. My first thought was an interleague battle between Annalina, Istima, and Featylec. Amusing, but hardly kosher.

*shrugs* Not my fault the ECL 6-8 leagues happen to be all but dead about the time most of my guys are hitting those levels ;) . Still, I see what you mean - nothing for it.

...and on a more minor note, I just noticed that Istima's power rating is 1499. I think I now have some idea how Sindorin felt when he saw that Va'ria had that. :(

@ McJarvis - Oh, I'm sure I can come up with something to post in the Guild thread about it if nothing else. Theres a couple of ideas forming in the back of my head already. Heh, maybe if I get lucky and don't have to work Sunday I can even get a quick story written about the fight if its done by then :) .

@ My other Pitlords - Other tactics tomorrow. Mithos' took a bit longer than I expected.I can imagine. That's two fights for me this week where I've said to myself, "Bah! My opponent is barely worth considering. His horse, on the other hand...." And for the third, just substitute "griffon" for "horse." The Mithos/Maya fight would just be two people hitting each other with pointy sticks without the mounted element.MWB; my two quests are up, whenever you feel like linking them to the pairings. Thanks for the notice and the reminder. I knew I had do do that as soon as I saw the threads go up, but I'm so conditioned to ignore quests that aren't mine....

It should have. If you don't have time for it, you may be able to trade. I know McJarvis was looking for extra credits.

Please note: I'm not at all sure Cat did the credits for this week before taking off. If you know how many credits you had before, and the number you have now doesn't look right, please let me know! I've seen a few complaints already, but many of them were involved in other clerical errors.

Of course, now you get: Seven Large Monsters.
Sigh. Good luck.

The balance check is only for moving, so you should be able to just sit there. But then centaurs have a high strength, so their untrained climb might mess with your plan.

The simple answer is - we don't have to show you how it climbs. As long as it makes its check - it succeeds... and yes - your horse could come up with you as long as you have taught it to climb with a trick...

Or were able to handle it with a DC 25 handle animal check. curse that wild card that druids have....

Hmm... In that case, I want to teach my horse *that* trick. :-) Although McJarvis has a good point. I have a +6 Handle Animal skill check, so its at least possible...

Actually, I just reread the map. There's no climb check involved to use the ladder. Hrm...

I suppose as long as I'm sitting in the middle of the roof where the ladder leads, they'll have to do something fancy to get by me anyways, otherwise they're stuck on the ladder. Can you Bull rush while climbing at 1/4 speed?

Oh, speaking of equipment for monsters. Since I've got to do something similar. Taking Valen's centaur fight as an example, do Cr 3 monsters really receive 2500gp if they have a standard treasure listing? Or am I reading something wrong. That seems like... Alot. Especially when they'd only be giving out 900gp in treasure.

It's that much gold to equip them for any-given situation. For instance, even though I'm pretty sure you'll figure out a way to prevent them from charging, I'll still be equipping the centaurs with masterwork lances, since that is something they would definately keep on them. Another standard for me is all my warrior-type characters get potions of pro:evil & tattoos of synesthete.

Things like that eat up wealth quickly...so it won't all be aimed at you.

Your monster info is up. Although nothing else yet. I did one reroll because the first set I didn't think stood a chance. And I was hoping not to have to run 10 monsters...

Of course, now you get: Seven Large Monsters.
Sigh. Good luck.
I'm afraid I still need one bit of info for this, as I said before. Featylec's free activity is a burglary, so I need to know if these things have expendables I can steal, and if so what so that I can pick what to take.

I can imagine. That's two fights for me this week where I've said to myself, "Bah! My opponent is barely worth considering. His horse, on the other hand...." And for the third, just substitute "griffon" for "horse." The Mithos/Maya fight would just be two people hitting each other with pointy sticks without the mounted element.
Oh come now, Noble's not the one you should be worrying about. Sleep ends things right from the get-go with just a bit of luck on my part, and I can try it twice. And if we get into melee, Mithos' tripping talent will be all he needs to defeat Maya anyway.

@Zevox: Doh, you're right of course.

Looking at what I'm likely to equip them with now.

Ok, each individual will be carrying 1 potion of cure light wounds, 1 potion of magic weapon, and 1 potion of shield of faith. All caster level 1. So a total of 7 cure light wounds, 7 magic weapons and 7 shield of faiths for a grand total 1050 gp worth of consumables. Will add this to the fight description.

We are forgetting what the treasure actually is supposed to be:
When generating an encounter dealing with monsters away from their lair, remember that a creature only takes what it can easily carry with it. In the case of a creature that cannot use treasure, that generally means nothing. The monster safeguards or hides its treasure as well as it can, but it leaves it behind when outside the lair. Intelligent creatures that own useful, portable treasure (such as magic items) tend to carry and use these, leaving bulky items at home. Treasure can include coins, goods, and items. Creatures can have varying amounts of each, as follows.

@McJarvis:

The reason I brought this up is that this actually makes monster fights even more unbalanced than they are already. Usually the monster treasure isn't supposed to be added as efficient and optimized equipment on top of the monster. This in addition to the fact that we are fighting monsters that should be fought with four characters alone.

In a balanced gaming environmetn monster treasure shouldn't be all on the monter increasing it's fighting capabilities, but in the lair as a reward. But on the other hand, we are playing in a higlhy optimized environment, so this probably isn't a problem.

I'm not complaining, just pondering the monster equipment.

The first set was 10 Giant Bombadier Beetles. I mean 10 mindless insects with no climb ability, flight, or ranged attack longer than 10', or coordination on the forest map? Who hit in melee on natural 20's only?

Why can't I ever roll tough monsters, like a dragon or something. All I seem to get are the lame guys... Mimics, bugs, and so forth.

I allready complained about that, too. The simple answer was: "Too many characters had auto-wins in their monster fights, so we houseruled, that monsters get equipment as an NPC of their CR."

I can't agree with that and (as a pitlord) will maybe give my monsters less then optimized equipment, unless they have mostly class levels, but they get the money, that's a Coco rule.

Which is the reason I wanted to point out that I wasn't complaining. I just wanted to take a look at how we handle monster equipment and how they are handled by the general guidelines in the rules.

Even if the fights were unfair, I wouldn't be upset. I've used to playing with a GM that is never "fair" to players. Not that he would cheat players, but the challenges we get to face are totally unbalanced. PCs die every other session, and usually that means creating a new character. Adds excitement to the game, allthough sometimes might feel a little frustarating.

@Abyssal Stalker: Tactics sent for Reginald Molehusband.

With regards to monster fights, there are (at least) three things I dislike about them:
1) Two different pitlords can come up with equipment for the same monster and create encounters of wildly different difficulty levels.
2) The random numbers of possible opponents creates too much variation in difficulty levels (e.g. 1 very young white dragon and 3 very young white dragons are both possible as an EL 5 opponent).
3) The "no auto-win" rule punishes gladiators for being well-prepared (e.g. having access to invisibility or flight).

I'd much prefer it if we got rid of the "no auto-win" rule, fixed the number of opponents in a group, and if equipment was either (a) fixed or (b) randomly determined so that it's not dependent on how lenient the pitlord is feeling. I doubt it'll happen any time soon, though.

@UserNamer: I just saw that Maya vs. Mithos is up. There are some problems.

Animals avoid combat when not controlled. The horse should have run away when the rider fell asleep.

There's a 25% chance of falling out of the saddle when Maya loses consciousness. If she falls, she'll be injured and will wake up. I tried to find this in the roller, but I can't find the session at all. Did you use real dice?

The rewards are obviously completely wrong.

P.S. I see that Anselm vs. Chosen is also up. Hard to find fault with that one.

I must disagree with the bolded part, since theres no rules for this in existance. With a sudden loss of guidance from the rider, why should the horse be doing anything but waiting for guidance unless the rider has fallen off (and is thus clearly out of it)? If this were a Pegasus or something with a decent intelligence like that I could see it, but not a horse. Really, having unintenlligent mounts deliberately avoid combat in situations like that seems a bit overdoing it to me, and it gives mounted combatants an even greater edge than they already have, which I don't think we want to do.

But anyway, theres also the problem that Sleep takes a full round to cast, but he treated it as a standard action. Of course since Maya wouldn't be attacking Mithos until after the sleep that works goes off, it won't change anything. Theres also the problem of the total lack of coordinates or round-by-round status summary, which is required by our rules in the pairings post.

All right, I'll concede that point, but you bring up another issue.

Round 4: Mithos moves. At best, he starts his full-round casting with one standard action. Noble is hurt.

Round 5: Mithos finishes casting with another standard action. Maya saves. Maya and Calabash base and attack Noble, potentially killing him.

Round 6: Mithos begins casting another sleep. Maya and Calabash attack some more, assuming Noble isn't down yet. If he does go down, Mithos falls, forcing Concentration. If Noble is already down, then Maya withdraws, and at that point Calabash would probably keep doing what he was doing when she fell asleep. Same thing if Noble goes down after a single attack rather than a full attack this round.

And one more issue: mount and rider share the same space and have the same HD. There should be a 50/50 chance of the spell affecting either of them.

@ Telin: One thing....that might change everything.

I asked to use the attack an opponent option in a grapple, not the damage an opponent option as you used. I should be making attacks at a -4 vs his AC rather that compete in grapple rolls. Once the rage began that would be 1d20+3 vs an AC of 15 I believe...meaning I need a 12 or higher to hit when Scallas rages, and a 14 before he rages.

If I get grappled, use the armor spikes and the attack an opponent option to deal damage as best I can.

With an 80 ft move - you might have been able to move around the outside (I'm not sure of that). Regardless - it should definitely be listed on your sheet so that the pitlord doesn't need to do any calculations.

:D Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I just assumed the 8x weight thing would auto-scale correctly with the strength increase for some reason. There's not a whole lot I can do about it, though...my weight x 8 is higher than the horses light load alone. ((Maybe a custom item of str increase?))

Another concern-> I believe the fight rewards are wrong. Corbin had an ally that TIM scared away & thus TIM is entitled to greater reward(standard 1,125gp/xp)

Ah - good point. Actually I was still thinking that the horse was an ally - not a class feature - so I was thinking it cancelled out.

Oh and by the way - I advise you to include all of TIM's class features, since "Simple Battle Sorcerer" doesn't include that he doesn't gain a familiar and instead has an animal companion...

EDIT - Fixed.

Also - Fixed the other fight to include attack opponent instead of grapple for damage for Terek. This did result in an overturn surprisingly.

One small issue: Full defense is a standard action. Doing it at 0 HP will kill you.

Well. Hippogriffons on round 7 hit relanex for Hit with 19 for 7 damage and Hit with 23 for 3 damage. Relanex is disabled. of his 13/23 hps bring him to 0/23. You will note the minor math error.

So, his Full defense for the rest of combat doesn't really effect the combat but make the character sitting around doing not much.

Some comments:
1) Ordering the horses to grapple is a DC 10 check, not DC 15.
2) The energy stuns should do 2d6+2 fire damage (DC 14) since it's an ML 4 dorje.
3) Why would Reg stop Brain Locking Sinwa? Nosnra the psicrystal should be shooting sonic Acid Orbs at Torel, forcing him to fight back eventually (and break his Hide from Animals).
4) Note that once Torel starts attacking ANY CREATURE (not just any animal, so that includes Reg), his Hide from Animals is canceled, so the horses can attack him.

(By the way, I appreciate the difficulty of a battle with about a zillion allies. Thanks for your hard work!)

Annalina Vale & Istima Telarc & Relanex Thines vs. Little Daisy is here and here and here.
(The last part is probably the most interesting)
As MWB noted, Prot. Good does not ward neutral summons (hence the lack of mention of it in my tactics), which is a problem. Also to note is that casting Call Lightning Storm is a 1-round casting time, so Daisy can't lob the lightning in the same round as its cast. This lets Istima's mount survive an extra round, which should help vs the Hippogriffs. Also, since the Hippogriffs are close enough for physical blows, Istima was supposed to use his Force Screen powerstone, which would help extend his lifespan as well if an edit is done for the potion.

In any event, shouldn't Relanex have been blasting with his wand? It seems odd that all he did was take total defense that whole time.

Personally, I don't think an edit will change things if the above is taken into account, especially since Istima will have the round he quaffed that potion to blast, Annalina was still around, and Relanex may have a chance to do some blasting if the Hippogriffs are after Istima. If DSugui would like one run though, I suppose either you can try to edit it in time for the deadline this week, or it can be held over (*sigh*). In any event, thanks for the run - considering the size of the battle, its pretty damn good!

Edit: Just noticed the note in the summary about taxes - the taxes errand means that if Annalina wins her fight, her Guild (EHTC) gets some gold equal to a certain percentage of her winnings. So in this case, since she won, the EHTC gets 12% of her total gp winnings in gold (this is not deducted from her own winnings though - they just get it for free).

Macbrea: Whoops, this error was the number typed, the Hippogrif deals 1d4+4 damage, so 3 is unlikely. It did 6 damage (but the keys are so next to another. ;))

About the full defence: Right, I even checkt the "disabled" status in the SRD but somehow I was stuck at "...any ... action the game master deems strenuous ... deals 1 point of damage". But in fact this only counts for other actions and standard actions allways deal the damage.

Well, if there is anything else to correct, I'll change that, too.

For now, I just remembered, that there was that issue of rewards....

Char Level 6 wins vs. Level 9: 5,400 XP
5,400 /3 = 1,800 XP +2/7*25%= 7.147% for Daisy's eagle, -1/4*25%=6.25% for the two horse-owners.
And Daisy get's
2,700 /3 = 900 XP -7.147% + 2/3*6.25% ???

Or: 1928 XP for Relanex, 1816 XP for Annalina and Istima and 873 XP for Daisy?

Looks right. And those times 1.11 for the level 6s or 1.66 for Daisy yields gp, so 2,140 gp for Relanex, 2,015 gp for Annalina and Istima, and 1,449 gp for Daisy. And 241 gp in taxes to the EHTC from Annalina.

One thing:

First, I'm not sure why I have to take the range penalty; I relooked over my tactics and being at 110' wouldn't have triggered any part of the movement that would've made you go nuts. :)

With that said, every 10 rounds starting after 6 (round 16, 26, etc.) he has to come out of total defense and shoot at me. Without the range penalty I would've landed hits in rounds 16 and 36 (24 vs. 23 and 23 vs. 23) which would've ended the fight prior to the killing crit in round 72.

Simple....UserNamer forfeits. Doesn't matter if the fight has been held over for one week or twenty, the sheet still needs to remain unedited until the fight is posted. That's what the rules we play by state. Maybe I'm a hard-ass, but if we don't enforce the rules we have, what's the point in having them?

I have some issues with the fight.

The expansion thing was totally my fault. My edition of the complete psionics book has the duration of expansion listed as min/level in the power's stats. Had I looked further there is the note that it takes 3 PP total to upgrade to min/level. My bad.

My tactics state clearly that I am trying to engage in melee w/ Ghashara. The only mention of attacking her animals requires me to be entangled and threatened by them and her tactics make no mention of using the entangle scroll.

As I see it in round 4 Bazili would continue to move towards the center looking for Geshara, get LOS, and then move towards her which is easily achievable with a double move. Charging the animals as soon as I see them is not in my tactics.

The Produce Flames in rounds 2-4 did not hit. There is a -4 penalty from ranged attack into melee and a -4 penalty from cover. However, these situations would be different if I moved towards Ghashara in round 2.

My armor class goes back to 20 after my action in round 4.

The summoned wolf disappears after Ghashara's turn in round 4 (summoned 1; acted rounds 2, 3, and 4; duration 3 rounds) so I was not hit by it in round 5.

In general if I kept moving on Ghashara as in my tacticsI would have had a pretty good chance. She wants to avoid me at all costs which means the horse is double moving, a -4 to ranged attack. Every attack with the Produce Flame reduces its duration by a minute so she has to keep firing them. Maws can not keep up with me. At some point he looses sight of me and has not been commanded to track by scent which is definately different than using scent as part of seek. In fact I think his last command is to attack, but this seems a little gray. He can run, but would be flat-footed and unable to AoO when I moved away. After a few rounds I switch to the bow. A 5' step takes care of Maws and 3 hits from the bow takes care of the horse. It becomes a much different fight at this point. Of course I could roll poorly, but I think that if the fight was rerun from round 4 I have a good shot at winning.

My decision was based on the fact that your tactics don't really mention what to do with his allies at all. You did, however, state that "melee is priority". If you had stated to ignore the allies it would have been different-> but I was in a situation where you were treatened in melee by a class ally before you even had sight on the druid. Your conditionals kinda of addressed them(but not really) -> but I don't even look at conditionals unless those situations arise

The produce flame thing IS my bad, though. I'll reformulate that tomorrow morning(before 3pm EST)

You are right about the wolf's summoned time as well. I'll check into that as well.

Yep. If they fail the will save they are dazed to boot and cant do anything.

There was that and Tatyana didn't expend the psycrystal's focus to auto defensively manifest the third ego whip.

But said errors are minor as they didn't cost me the battle/or even the expenditure of PP really. The CHA damage rolls determined how many times I had to ego whip, which didn't change, so it's fine.

You did, however, state that "melee is priority". If you had stated to ignore the allies it would have been different-> but I was in a situation where you were treatened in melee by a class ally before you even had sight on the druid.

The paragraph of the general tactics, the paragraph about using my movement to maintain melee, and the entries about searching all refer to Ghashara. The only other target ever mentioned is Ghashara's horse, and it is clearly stated that that is only a precursor to engaging Ghashara in melee. Had I ever once mentioned attacking her animal companion I would not waste your time with this post, but it feels like your interpretation was a pretty big departure from what I wrote in tactics.

<Addition>

I was not threatened when I attacked the allies. Bazili was made to charge them.

Then wait until the fight is up on the stickied Battles of Gladius thread. Do not edit your sheet before your fight is up or you lose automatically.

Original Fight post was here by Vath on 11/18. So, it was posted, just not finished.

So, the rule is there to prevent editing sheets after pairings but before fights post to include items/spells/whatever that would be fight-specific.

I don't expect you to write out tactics for every single thing your opponent is going to do(for instance, I _would_ have you just ignore the summoned nature's ally), but failing to mention anything about a Druid's animal companion is a pretty significant hole in tactics: and thus I felt I had to improvise. As it is, I did the best I could with what I was provided.

Assuming the shots are added back in as you mention in your previous post, the shots would be taken defensively, as the whole intent of my tactic was to jack my AC up as high as possible to make you come to melee. So rather than the AC of 23 you come up with, it would be an AC of 25, meaning neither of the attacks you mentioned would hit.

You're absolutely right; I had always been under the impression that fighting defensively was a melee-only action but under review in the SRD you're correct. With that resolved I can't find any further argument in the overturned result other than amazement that in 60 shots no natural 20s were rolled.

Obviously this will teach me to bring 200 arrows and not to explicitly rule out the use of my true strike scrolls. Hope only have 30 arrows next week doesn't screw me.

My tactics didn't mention anything about Reg's horses grappling Sinwa the bat, only Kervan or Torel. If the bat is still Brain Locked, why grapple it? Note that an ally or a helpless creature does not restrict movement through those squares.

Actually, this is the part that confused me here. You had the names wrong in your tactics and that messed me.

1) In general, Reg plans to use Brain Lock on Sinwa the bat (5 pp, range 150') while Nosnra orders one horse to grapple Kervan and one horse to grapple Blackrazor. The first time Reg uses Brain Lock, he'll expend his psionic focus to increase the DC by 1. If one opponent is dead, both focus on the remaining opponent.

First, I'm not sure why I have to take the range penalty; I relooked over my tactics and being at 110' wouldn't have triggered any part of the movement that would've made you go nuts.

Here's the section of your tactics where you ask to stay a minimum of 110ft away.

If it’s on the start of my round, move to a minimum of 110’ away and shoot if I still have a standard available. Move back and shoot when I’m out of his charge range (40’), run if he takes a run action to base me (but can’t AOO due to being flat-footed). Try to avoid runs if possible because it takes away deflection ability. If not on the start of my round, immediately start moving back and start trying to establish the 110’ distance.

As to the firing every 10 rounds - that is an often misread part of the rules. The delay penalty is only applied in cases where there is no "meaningful" interaction between the opponents. In the case of your opponent, firing at you is not meaningful since you automatically deflect it. As such - his only means of meaningful interaction is literally sitting there trying to avoid getting hit.

And as NiQil pointed out - the shots would've been fired defensively - so your point wouldn't have had an effect anyway.

I just finished reading all of the tactics for the ECL9 FFA... why in the world did all of you decide that Kraegin was the only one capable of dealing with Walden? Oooh - he can rebuke him - to gain +2 on attacks against him...

He can't control him because his turn resistance makes that impossible - so what exactly do I have that makes me the best route to take him down...?
Macbrea

12-05-06, 10:19 AM
I think the problem is you are probably the only one with any ability to take him down. :P So, therefore, the best choice.. They flee.. I will run the fight when I get back from the doctors. I should have awhile to work on it.

I got distracted too easily last night and didn't get anything really done.

The produce flames are at a total of -8 (-4 cover, -4 melee). G's tactics say nothing of moving to negate cover and surely the tactics blade cuts both ways. Therefore, the produce flames in rounds 4 and 9 miss touch AC 12. After expansion goes away in round 4 Bazili's AC goes back up to 20. Therefore, the crit does not confirm in round 8.

At the end of the new fight Bazili has over half of his hit points and is one swing away from dropping the animal companion that has hijacked his tactics. Ghashara has two produce flames that are pretty unlikely to hit. Her tactics after this make no mention of using any other spells other than a wand of clw for herself, and she will not be injured until after I drop her horse.

If Bazili drops Maws, my tactics start back up and a running archery contest starts up with G's sling vs B's mighty composite longbow. Then, G is alone on foot with a movement of 20'.

I am in a good position to win the fight without all the mistakes included.

I hope I do not seem like a habitual complainer. The fight you ran in which my other character lost is flawless. I just chose my tactics poorly and got into an archery contest vs a wand of magic missile.

good position to win the fight?!?! you happen to be fighting Gashara! The mersiless avatar of nature!! even if this fight gets run again you will fail to defeat Gashara. she will make fertilizer of your corpse, when she is done toying with you.

good luck on the correction... you are going to need it! :D

that is incorrect. I specify on my tactics to use Pearls of power (I have 2) if produce flames runs out. and continue hit and run tactics.

@McJarvis - regarding your comment in the Danidus fight - you should know that paladin's can use the lay on hands up to the maximum amount at any time:

If a magic item can be used more often than a number of times per day (for example, if it can be used twice an hour), then the CoCo places no special restriction on it; that item could be used twice in the 3-Fight Cycle, as normal (or even more times, in the highly unlikely case of the fight lasting more than an hour). Likewise, a paladin's Lay on Hand ability and similar things not based on x/d uses is not subject to the 1/3 Rule and can be used normally but any point or application spend is not available until after the 3-Fight Cycle is complete.

Looks pretty good. One note: Chameleon lasts 10 minutes per level, not 1, so the tattoo wouldn't have worn off until round 101. Ogres got unusually lucky, but otherwise went as expected.
Edit: Looks like you also forgot that the canopy gives him concealment (20% miss chance for the Ogres), but that won't make any real difference, so don't worry about it.

As Pitlords this week, I have to follow the rules. Fortunately for my sake, UserNamer has a complete botch for the rewards section. I have told him twice that he is required to fix that, if nothing else, to get credit for running the fight. If he does, I have to accept the results as they are at that point. If not, it will be held over (and reassigned, since UserNamer says he's too busy to do CoCo for a few weeks).

Added the rewards to the hunter fight.

Me thinks your rewards are wrong. I'm guessing you counted Sinwa as an Ally, but Sinwa is a class ally so no ally penalty there. Either that or there is the issue that it is a hunter fight, so you only get bonus rewards for killing an opponent that you are targeting, not for surviving.

Can I get a third opinion on this one?

I'm not totally sure what's going on, but it looked like he gave Torel (Winner+1*Loser), Reg (2*Loser) and Kervan (1*Loser). I think the issue might be that, in Hunter fights, knocking someone out counts as "defeating" them so it could be claimed that Reginald "defeated" Torel (even though he ended up dying first). I asked a question in the Oracle thread to try and clarify the rewards.
Erithmu

12-05-06, 03:43 PM
I saw that ... even still they would be off. My rewards for Kervan's should be right no matter who is 'defeated' at the end.

I'm sure it is just due to him getting out of town today, It does look like he basically did FFA rewards. If it is ok w/ you guys, can we just temporarly link to the post here in the FotW thread till he changes it when he gets back. I'll edit accordingly depending on what the Oracle thread resolves.

That was my plan. No matter what the rewards are, they won't move Reginald to 6th level.

Edit: It looks like he gave:
Torel (Winner+1*Loser)*(1.1666) xp instead of (Winner+?*Loser)*(1.0833) xp
Kervan (1*Loser)*(1.1666) xp instead of (1*Loser)*(1.0833) xp

CLW fixed, as per other post.

Oh, didn't realize that. Which would have made your sniping much more effective. Which probably would have saved you a single CLW charge. Since I did actually roll the miss chances, but started doing so in round 22, where I rolled all 3 previous ones (when I remembered.) And one missed, which meant I went to the CLW tactic a bit too early (oh well). And then you too a hit or two later, so I figured I'd let it slide. Bleh, I just don't want to touch that fight again. Eight guys isn't particularly fun. Apologies for the sloppy positioning at the end, but I figured you could get anywhere you wanted undetected. What with the *huge* range penalty on hearing and your stealth being just high enough to auto-hide.

Nice character btw. :-)

Things look pretty good. I know the ECL 9 FFA is underway. Uhme's MQ is late by design. UserNamer is gone, so his two incomplete fights will likely remain that way (and it's probably impossible for someone to pick up his monster fight that hasn't even been rolled). And that looks like it.

No problem at all - Featylec basically couldn't lose here without some serious crits on thier part anyway (which were impossible unless he left the treetops due to the cover to his AC), so I don't mind. Besides, I know what mass fights like that can be like - I had to run one between two PCs and eight monsters once (5 Sahuagin, 2 Gnolls, and a Hyena vs two of NiQil's horsemen), and that was with minimum rolls for the monsters (thank you God!).

Nice character btw. :-)
Thanks :) . Though he wasn't so good at lower levels, but the campaign fixed that right up (Rogues do a lot better in groups than solo). Hide in Plain Sight is just nasty, and since Featylec is a good warrior in his own right, its not his only trick, which is very nice. And it'll be even nicer when he gets his Shadow Companion at level 10 - an incorporeal friend that saps strength from his enemies is going to be annoying as hell to them ;) .

*chuckles* Actually, I don't think the next campaign will have much, if anything, to do with Achos itself - more so the power behind the usurper, by the look of things. But anyway, sorry, but hes not missing out on an opportunity like that - Featylec's a wanderer at heart anyway, and he just loves big adventures in strange lands. First, I wanted to cast shield.

Part of the puzzle is understanding what time of year it is for alot of people in college, like myself. Finals time. If people didn't send tactics for my fight... that was fine with me. I could post a quick 'everyone loses' or 'X loses' and go on with getting work done, so I didn't look too deep past the empty inbox. Fair? Not really, which is why I apologized, because I had something to apologize for.

You are right, that ray of enfeeble would have hit. However, I don't feel it would have changed the situation. You are in the same situation the next turn as if it had missed; namely, you are able to be targetted by Andurwin and at low hit points, where a single manifestation kills you. Without Bubba running interference and drawing their attention, combined with your lack of area-affect damage to take out both your opponents at the same time, I felt that surrender was your best improvisation. The melee combat was purely thematic in nature.

Enfeebling Andurwin doesn't change that situation; so while I apologize for the error and I understand your imperative to get as much of a chance for your character as possible, I simply cannot justify putting time I'll be using to study into your fight.

Of course, it could be worse, you guys could be going into your third week, hey? ;) Sorry mate.

Allow me:

Take 5-Foot Step
You can move 5 feet in any round when you don’t perform any other kind of movement. Taking this 5-foot step never provokes an attack of opportunity. You can’t take more than one 5-foot step in a round, and you can’t take a 5-foot step in the same round when you move any distance.
You can take a 5-foot step before, during, or after your other actions in the round.
You can only take a 5-foot-step if your movement isn’t hampered by difficult terrain or darkness. Any creature with a speed of 5 feet or less can’t take a 5-foot step, since moving even 5 feet requires a move action for such a slow creature.
You may not take a 5-foot step using a form of movement for which you do not have a listed speed.

Edit: Doh! Missed it by that much!

Among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the spell’s point of origin are affected first.

The horse is closer. (Not in game terms technically, but you'd be hard pressed to argue the horse isn't closer in all reality)

edit-> I'm really tired right now...an edit will come in the morning if it is deserved. Let me know how sleep interacts with a rider & horse when both have the same hd and are in the same square.

If I am reading the fight correctly, isn't the horse dead at this point? That would sorta make this moot.

Nevermind...looking at the wrong character.

In this case, since rider and mount occupy the same space, if they have equal HD, then it would be a purely random roll as to whether it affected the rider or the mount.

According to MWB's post earlier, its randomized. I'd tend to agree with him, since in game terms they use the same space.

erm..tried to edit above post before, but...

If Maya drops for a cover bonus with a DC 15 ride check, that more or less cinches that the horse is closer.

regardless of how we figure this out, I want an elder ruling on the matter. I remember thinking about this over a year ago and always wanted to know what happened...

*sigh* I suppose if you want to rule it that way, I have no way to argue (pitlord call). Suffice to say, theres a number of reasons I'd disagree (mounted combat rules say they use the same space for simplicity's sake, MWB has said its randomized, how does she know to do that at that particular time w/o spellcraft or know (arcana), how is it that the horse is conveniently angled just right for such to work, etc), but its your domain.

Ride check wouldn't apply, because there is no attack being made that a ride check can be used against.

As for a ruling, as per Zevox' previous post, it appears that MWB and I are in agreeance....it's a random roll since rider and mount are considered to occupy the same space and have the same HD.

Really what's driving me right now is the lateness of the fight & how little time I have on my hands tonight/tomorrow. I know that isn't your fault, but it is the reality of it.

I still have my own characters to prep before 3pm, as well as "real life" work to do. If it isn't a hard rule of CoCo, I'd be just as inclined to say that the horse fell asleep & maya smacked it awake, which then proceded to the rest of the fight.

An Oracle decision is really needed, methinks.

*shrugs* Should be simple enough - if Maya is affected and fails the save (and stays on the mount rather than falling off - 75% chance to stay on w/ military saddle), Mithos wins by CDG. If the horse is affected, Maya makes the save, or Maya fails but falls off the horse and is awakened by the falling damage, things go as before, no alterations needed.

I have a large problem with Walden's fight. Elders have ruled that you cannot find an invisible person just by moving into its square because that person can always choose to avoid, and it should be the same way for detecting a hidden opponent and for areas where sight doesn't function (inside a wall). Additionally, I should have been inside the floor and healing when I was damaged. At that point, the horse could not have found me since a) it can't see inside of objects even though it's ethereal, and b) it's not incorporeal so it doesn't get the auto-detect adjacent beings ability. Even if it did bump into me the first time, it should not know how I would withdraw and thus I should be able to get away eventually.

Relevant SRD passage:
An ethereal creature can see and hear into the Material Plane in a 60-foot radius, though material objects still block sight and sound. (An ethereal creature can’t see through a material wall, for instance.) An ethereal creature inside an object on the Material Plane cannot see. Things on the Material Plane, however, look gray, indistinct, and ghostly. An ethereal creature can’t affect the Material Plane, not even magically. An ethereal creature, however, interacts with other ethereal creatures and objects the way material creatures interact with material creatures and objects.

If this turns out to be a valid objection, I'm going to have to ask that this fight be held over. It had a huge effect on the results of the fight.

Oh come on, +infinity is roughly the same thing ;).

By the way, I didn't catch this question earlier, but I think I remember hearing that allies are not affected by the out of arena penalty. Otherwise, Walden's psicrystal would last 10 rounds before it gets poofed since it can't manifest.

I think the positive %ages are divided by 1/3 (or in other words, you get reward adjustments on the diffrence between the average opponents allies and your own)

And it makes sense. Imagine everybody brought a 25% ally, then everybody should get +/- 0%. With your method everybody would get +50%.

I just read through the fight and looked at the maps. I am having a hard time understanding your objection to being spotted by another ethereal being. The nightmare should have little trouble finding Walden. I actually think you got more latitude than you deserved. I would have made you work blind every time you decided to hide in the floor.
I will grant that the nightmare can't see you inside the actual block of the floor if it is viewing with an aspect to seeing the Material Plane, but every time you move into or out of it, it gets the opportunity to use the pretty horsey head the gods gave it and know where you are. I might make it attack with the 50% miss chance for the visibility issue, though this seems pertinent as well:

Even if a creature on the Material Plane can see an ethereal creature the ethereal creature is on another plane. Only force effects can affect the ethereal creatures. If, on the other hand, both creatures are ethereal, they can affect each other normally.

The blocks of stone only exist on the Material Plane,as far as I know. It has never come up in one of my fights that I needed to get clarification on the Ethereal Plane of the Arena. On the Ethereal Plane, the two creatures are interacting without physical obstruction. I believe the vision statements you cite relates to the ethereal beings viewing the Material Plane, not each other on the Ethereal Plane.

As for + Infinity, I take a dim view of anything fluffy that obscures a hard number/fact. It falls into the same category as calling an Air Gnome or whatever the character I am thinking of an outsider. It isn't an outsider, and a busy pitlord should not have to scan for what it actually is. A busy pitlord should never have to calculate a number for you because you found infinity funnier. Any ethereal opponent needs to interact with your real score.

The debate on ghosts has gone on for some time. The fact that they are incorporeal/ethereal in nature makes them a real PITA for the leaving the arena/delay rules.

Re: Mithos/Maya: Had it mattered, I would have argued the timing.

A spell that takes 1 round to cast is a full-round action. It comes into effect just before the beginning of your turn in the round after you began casting the spell. You can't take a 5' step when it isn't your turn, and the spell is finished before your turn starts.

I had actually read the spell targeting to try to figure this out, but I mis-read it; I thought for some reason it was one of those "X or more targets within a 10' radius" effects. Sleep is slightly different, since it really is a burst.

Re: the FFA: If Macbrea declines the re-run, the results stand. The rewards are of course wrong: Kraegin gets -17.86%, +14.29%/3 = -13.10%. Dronnar gets -14.29%, +17.86%/3 = -8.34%. The others get +(17.86/3 + 14.29/3) = +10.72%.

Walden definitely should have a number for MS, with an "always succeeds" note.

And speaking of rewards: McJarvis, you haven't posted rewards for Valen vs. Centaurs yet.

One thing that may save Mithos, if I may:

Round 6: Maya has moved to 120' away. Sleep has a range of 110' and a radius of 10'. Ergo, Mithos can get it off and affect her.

Zevox

@Zevox. McJarvis, MWB -- it doesn't work that way. No part of an area effect spell can reach beyond the spell's range; it's like there's an invisible wall that cuts off the spell.
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm#range
A spell’s range indicates how far from you it can reach, as defined in the Range entry of the spell description. A spell’s range is the maximum distance from you that the spell’s effect can occur, as well as the maximum distance at which you can designate the spell’s point of origin. If any portion of the spell’s area would extend beyond this range, that area is wasted.

It sounds silly, but it's in the rules.

Considering you can leave your allies out of the arena altogether (even though you're prebuffed them), I don't see why you can't leave them on the ethereal plane.

I was looking at it from the view point of the Nightmare ally. It can go ethereal at will. Which means you could take it. Have it go ethereal for more then 10 rounds without it being affected by the fight.

It might be useful for Uncarnate Allies, later.

The only relevant passage is:
I'm don't think any of the summons can do much, but try to stay away from them. If they get really pesky, wait them out or take them out. The above attack methods should apply here.
It should have been readily apparent the moment the nightmare went ethereal and negated all forms of cover/concealment that it was going to be impossible to stay away from. It could even be argued that it was a big concern even from round 1.

The only reason I suggested that you put the correct numbers there and a note is because there are automatic skill packages that the number is could be used. In the case of move silently you would have had 5 ranks in it for it to kick in. But a number listed as +infinite might result in some odd results.

Hide (vs Spot)
Move (vs Listen)
Bluff (vs Sense)
Sense (vs Bluff)
.
Task: All four skills must be higher than the mentioned opposed skills of your opponent. You need at least 5 ranks in each skill.
.
Effect: You may pick your and your opponents starting boxes, and you gain a surprise round. The boxes still can't be the same.

Assuming Walden wasted some skill points it could result in him starting anywhere in the arena he wanted to.

Haven't looked over the fight myself yet but I'll comment on the allies:

Divide each opponents' allies benefits to you by the number of opponents and add them to the penalty you receive.

So an ECL6 character with a CR2 ally and 2 opponents each with a CR1 ally would be like this:

25% (penalty) to you
12.5% penalty to each opponent

You receive -25% + 12.5%/2 + 12.5%/2 = -12.5%

Each opponent receives: -12.5% + 25%/2 + 12.5%/2 = +6.25%

The simple way to figure if you've got it right is that all percentages should total to 0% when added together (at least if the opponents are all at the same ECL...)
TelinArtho

12-06-06, 12:21 PM
1. After the first round of attacks, the spiritual weapon should get 2 attacks per round unless Kraegin retargets it.
2. As mentioned, the Protection from evil potion is CL1 and must make CL checks to prevent the summoned monsters from hitting him anyway. SR is listed in the monster entries I provided in my tactics.
3. In the rewards, please do include that Shadow-smoke survived the encounter and that the duration is ~10 days left.

I need to read what the arguments are about the nightmare - but I probably won't be able to comment too much about it before the deadline. If there's any question - I would prefer to have it held over - since the above two points probably are significant enough that Kraegin would have dealt another 12 points of damage to Dronnar.
TelinArtho

12-06-06, 12:56 PM
It appears to me that the remainder of the issue about the nightmare is that Walden should have been attacking it from rounds 10+ instead of trying to avoid it. Since it does appear that the nightmare will be a constant threat that will not be going away, then the part in his tactics about taking out an ally would seem to apply - he should be attacking Shadow-smoke.

That said, he would be suffering the miss chance of the smoke from the nightmare - and I think it is extremely unlikely that his +7 melee with his guisarme for 1d4 damage will be doing anything near enough damage to the nightmare with 45 HP and 24 AC and 20% concealment. Alternatively, he could try shooting with his bow for +11 ranged and 1d4+1 damage and 2d6 for psionic shot - but that would be at 50% concealment or would be suffering from AoO from the Nightmare from firing in melee.
