| TelinArtho11-30-05, 02:05 PM | Good morning all. This the thread to discuss this week's fights. Usual rules apply (play nice or else...). The rules of Gladius can be found here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=448520). We should have about 2 hours left to edit - though its always a good idea to be finished early. And, on another note (completely selfish and self-agrandizing), today is my 3rd anniversary with my wife. -- TelinArtho |
| Sindorin11-30-05, 02:08 PM | Congrats!!! Why are you posting here!!! |
| waywreth11-30-05, 02:10 PM | Congrats TelinArtho! |
| TelinArtho11-30-05, 02:12 PM | Eh - because I'm still at work... Though, I also meant to mention that I won't have any of my tactics in until tomorrow - as I am going to out tonight (big surprise...). As a note, if anyone ever gets the chance to head into Mendon, Massachusetts (USA), I heartily recommend Alicantes. Mediterranean dishes and excellent food and service... |
| waywreth11-30-05, 02:15 PM | As a note, if anyone ever gets the chance to head into Mendon, Massachusetts (USA) Isn't that amusing... I live about 30 minutes North East of there... |
| TelinArtho11-30-05, 02:19 PM | Depending on how much north and how much east - that puts you squarely in: Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Westborough, Hopkinton and maybe Southborough Am I close? |
| waywreth11-30-05, 02:22 PM | Depending on how much north and how much east - that puts you squarely in: Ashland, Framingham, Natick, Westborough, Hopkinton and maybe Southborough Am I close? You nailed it. It's one of those. Que "It's a Small World After All." |
| Pittbull11-30-05, 02:25 PM | Congrats, TelinArtho! It's quite amazing to me how many members are allready married. I'm 29 now and don't plan to marry very soon, although I feel very comfortable with my beautiful girlfriend. On another note: I reactivated my first LG-build: Boraxx (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=5203478), so fear the awesome pig-rider! :D |
| Luni11-30-05, 02:26 PM | Happy anniversary, TelinArtho. I'd go visit that restaurant, but it is too far of a drive. :) No mediterrean restaurants where I live. Closest is probably 5 hour drive away. |
| Myrridin11-30-05, 02:27 PM | Heh, don't I feel like a newbie, coming up on my six month anniversay to my wife. :) Congrats Telin...as an anniversary gift, I'll put off squashing Daeren. ;) |
| TelinArtho11-30-05, 02:32 PM | Congrats, TelinArtho! :D If you want to feel a little older here's some things about me: I'm celebrating my 3rd anniversary (as you already know). I've got 2 kids (at 16 months and 31 months) I'm only 26 years old and my wife is 22. In other words - I started pretty young... All I can say is that marriage and kids is not for everyone - but I am happy with mine - so I'm definitely not complaining. @Waywreth - actually it occured to me that I missed a few more - but I'm happy I nailed it in one of the 6. @Myrridin - no need to hold off on Squashing Daeren. That's what he's there for... if he survives - he just looks for bigger and bigger dragons... |
| Altaris1311-30-05, 03:03 PM | Congrats Telin! I'm 27, have been with my for over eight years and have a Son who just turned 6. Just to share for comparisons. |
| Caterane11-30-05, 03:21 PM | Today is the 23rd year my girlfriend and I are together! It still feels like in the beginning :cloud9: Did I say 'year'? I meant 'day' :D |
| Snommelp11-30-05, 03:24 PM | Me, I'm 20 and single. I ain't worried, though; I have faith that good things will come when they're supposed to come. That might mean a wife, or it might mean a life of happy celibacy. So happy anniversary to you and your wife, Telin, and here's to many, many more! :pint: |
| Sindorin11-30-05, 03:27 PM | Today is the 23rd year my girlfriend and I are together! It still feels like in the beginning :cloud9: Did I say 'year'? I meant 'day' :D Heh... how come you didn't tell us sooner? |
| Pittbull11-30-05, 03:31 PM | Heh... how come you didn't tell us sooner? YES!!......... ;) |
| Caterane11-30-05, 03:34 PM | I was ...uh... occupied :D Seriously, I dated her for 6 weeks before I rolled a 20 on my diplomacy check and talked her finally into a relationship LOL Man that was hard work! |
| SoulLord11-30-05, 03:35 PM | he he 31 here and just married for a couple of weeks now. Blog (http://www.livejournal.com/users/soullord/) |
| TelinArtho11-30-05, 03:37 PM | I was ...uh... occupied :D Seriously, I dated her for 6 weeks before I rolled a 20 on my diplomacy check and talked her finally into a relationship LOL Man that was hard work! Sorry Cat - but that analogy is just sad... truly it is... |
| Caterane11-30-05, 03:38 PM | |
| TelinArtho11-30-05, 03:42 PM | Analyzing one's relationship using terms from our popular gaming environment... I see it all the time in the poker environment as well - people comparing their relationships with poker analogies - etc. I was just kidding as well - so no need to take offense... |
| NiQil11-30-05, 03:45 PM | I was ...uh... occupied :D Seriously, I dated her for 6 weeks before I rolled a 20 on my diplomacy check and talked her finally into a relationship LOL Man that was hard work! I think she just failed her Sense Motive check....either that or you got a +10 situational modifier from Jim Bean, Jack Danials and Jose Cuervo LOL :P |
| Sindorin11-30-05, 03:46 PM | So, Cat, when is she going to post a character? Hmm? Hmm? |
| Pittbull11-30-05, 03:50 PM | So, Cat, when is she going to post a character? Hmm? Hmm? A female Harvester, that's scary. ;) |
| Huan11-30-05, 04:22 PM | Congrats TelinArtho, and may many more years of bliss find you. (Extend that to everyone else here :) ) And come now, is Life not a giant game? One with rules, consequences, irregularities, luck, chance, cheaters, and powergamers? To analyze it is as such is a mark of sanity, if nothing else. ;) |
| TelinArtho11-30-05, 04:32 PM | In case no one noticed - the deadline passed about a 1/2 hour ago - so stop yer editin' |
| Caterane11-30-05, 04:59 PM | She doesn't play RPGs so no female Harvester. Anyway, beginning my run now. Probably assign credits tomorow. |
| SoulLord11-30-05, 05:01 PM | he he he mi wife also didn't know anything about rpg's before she met me. Now she has a 5th lvl elven wizard with an aptitude for blowing things up. |
| Sindorin11-30-05, 05:04 PM | Watch out for that tower, I'll worry about the fighters. Look at the size of that thing! |
| Mind Rogue11-30-05, 06:03 PM | Now I feel really young. I haven't hit my 20th naming day yet and I currently don't have any significant other. On other news, I'm back from my grandmother's, but I don't have a witty remark this week. |
| Pitlords11-30-05, 06:57 PM | PAIRINGS DONE I'll assign credits tomorow. Too late for me now. Some notes: - Remember to use sblocks sparingly. - If you post a fight, try to use only 1 post if 1 post is enough. The Battles thread fills too fast otherwise and it will be a lot of work to start a new one. - I've thought about including Monster fights into the Arena for calculation purposes. That means they won't be tagged as [M] but a regular [A]. They would also count towards your win/loss record and your powerrating. For the latter, I need to decide wether to use a flat +/- 100 or say every monster has a powerrating of 1000. Comments? Have fun Cat PS: I'll make a trip to Castle Neuschwanstein (http://web.wilson.k12.pa.us/buildings/sh/staffpages/clatin/Neuschwanstein.jpg) this weekend from friday to monday. I won't be here during that time nor do I (want to) have internet access there. |
| Usurpator11-30-05, 07:22 PM | @Cat: If you can find a spot for Aramur in the ECL 3 League I would be pleased. I activated him for this week, but I don't see his name in the battles post. If you are just going to give him a monster fight, then leave him inactive, I'd rather fight other gladiators. |
| Pitlords11-30-05, 07:25 PM | Talik the Svelt (Ayrynthyn) vs Aramur (Usurpator): TelinArtho has been added. Telin+1° |

Since monsters have little variation other than their items rolled, the average rating for their ecl is probably appropriate. Good choice for a romantic getaway. :) |
| Usurpator11-30-05, 07:33 PM | Can the Elders give a definitive answer about the use of animals as mounts without the Combat Riding or Riding package? This week two of my characters have opponents that have an animal companion they can (and will?) use as mount, but don't have the appropriate tricks (Bastion and Hobo with an eagle and dire bat respectively) while one of my characters also has an animal companion without the appropriate tricks (Nexa). @Cat: thanks for the last minute pairing. |
| Sindorin11-30-05, 07:36 PM | Animals as mounts need to be pushed in order to do anything that they normally wouldn't do. I think someone said exactly that before. It requires a handle animal check. This is why in the beginning of Living Gladius we would see druids getting their animal in a miniquest or a normal quest and then they would be training the animal several weeks later. |

I would eliminate the possibility of being paired against monsters of higher ECL than your character, since that usually only happens in PC fights when it is requested. Leave it random just like it is now...just without the possibility of moving to a CL higher than your own. |

How is Eddie not able to be ridden? I can ride an iron golem if i want to and he sure doesn't know any "tricks". My eagle has all the combat necessities. What's listed under handle animal are just packages typically associated with them. Riding horses...and i stress the term RIDING, isn't trained for combat but are still able to carry riders. -ToK **EDIT: If it's really a HUGE issue that needs major addressing, just sub out seek with Guard and he's all set if it makes you feel more comfortable. However, imho, mounts should continue to be used as normal until it is thoroughly resolved. That way, no one person gets the shaft because of any dubious loopholing. |

Well, it would of been best if the powers that be at WoTC had included a ride trick instead of a package. For example, I list my tricks as separate ones rather then list the package. |
| Huan11-30-05, 11:30 PM | @Book5 Tactics for Dameon/Va'ria have been emailed. |
| King Uther11-30-05, 11:35 PM | Since I do not have any characters active, I can pick up any fights that get left. I am working on getting the Gladius World Map finished by the New Year, so do not expect me to have that many characters active. I am, on the other hand, ready to get some quests going so the storyline of the new year can get set up. The 1st week of the New Year Gladius is going to get invaded by a unified force bent on retrieving an artifact and destroying our fair city. I would like to run it like a team fight, paired together versus an opponent of equal level. Does everyone agree that a week of no gladiator vs gladiator fights would be a fun thing to try? |

Correction. I said you couldn't benefit from mounted combat while riding a golem. But you can ride it, nothing stops you from doing it. -ToK |
| Usurpator12-01-05, 04:02 AM | I am quite happy to let Nexa ride her 'trickless' Dire Bat. Eddie the Eagle's tricks do not need adjustment. I just wanted to make sure it is not illegal here. Also, I am specifically asking about riding Animals. Unintelligent creatures like golems just do what they're told, they're not skittish or have instincts that go counter to being ridden. Intelligent creatures (3+) are another story: they keep their own actions and initiative. It seemed intuitively weird to me that you have to teach these animals tricks if you just want them to follow you, but can ride them without problem without ever teaching them anything. Besides that, in the MM it specifically says that some creatures (Hippogriff for example) need 6 weeks of training before they can be ridden into combat. That sounds like the Combat Riding package to me.... |
| Pittbull12-01-05, 04:02 AM | The standart treasure for a frost giant (CR9) is 38000gp? Right? |
| Caterane12-01-05, 04:28 AM | The standart treasure for a frost giant (CR9) is 38000gp? Right? No, it's 9000 gold. You use table 4-23 on DMG p127. The CR of the Frost Giant (here: 9) is the NPC level. Then you check the treasure entry in his monster manual entry (here: Standard) and modify the treasure accordingly. Standard means it is not modified any further. Double would mean he has 18000 and none means he has no treasure at all, no matter what the table says. Hope that helps. EDIT: Peter, can you please add my profession income from last week? You forgot it. Link to the fight is <here>. It's 76 gold. |
| Pittbull12-01-05, 04:41 AM | Ah, npc treasure!! Lucky Sunwolf, I almost posted a PC-treasurelist. Frost-Giants equipment: - Greataxe +1 2320gp - Chainshirt +2 4250gp - Potions of Protectionx4 200gp - Potions of Bear's, Bull's, Cat's 900gp - Potion of Invisibility 300gp - Potion of Haste 750gp - Potion of Cure light woundsx4 200gp - 20 rocks in sack - 80gp |
| Pittbull12-01-05, 04:44 AM | EDIT: Peter, can you please add my profession income from last week? You forgot it. Link to the fight is <here>. It's 76 gold. Just take a closer look, it was allready there: The Harvester is the winner he gets 1200XP and 1200gp. He earns money with harvesting souls (76gp). |
| Caterane12-01-05, 04:51 AM | @all: What about a cap for expendables for Monsters? Perhaps max 25% Expandables of total treasure? Less? More? @NiQil: But where would all the fun be? :) @Pittbull: My bad. |

| Luni12-01-05, 08:38 PM | The most exciting fight ever is up, here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7892981&postcount=728)! Of course, no one watches Maven's fight anymore. Lifetime tickes to see Maven are 1 cp. @ToK: You know, when I get a character that fights Maven, I'll just surrender first to mess up your plans. |
| Kaigan12-01-05, 08:44 PM | @Erithmu: Sent you a PM about your tactics. It is crucial that you reply. Thanks. |

| Warclone12-01-05, 09:49 PM | Vivi vs. Kalarthus is up! I wont spoil the ending for you, it's pretty graphic. This is the first match I have pitlorded, so tell me what you think. |
| Tellish_of_Ket12-01-05, 10:04 PM | @ToK: You know, when I get a character that fights Maven, I'll just surrender first to mess up your plans. Man, if that happens i can just see Maven on the slow motion replay, "NNNNnoooooooo......!!" Maybe then i'll just edit my character after pairings are announced to get the auto-loss and forfiet the -25% xp penalty. LOL HAHHA..i never thought Gladius would become about who's the biggest loser and who can lose the fastest and in what way. LOL -ToK |
| waywreth12-01-05, 10:13 PM | Man, if that happens i can just see Maven on the Seriously... what's the point? Seems kind of counter-intuitive to the whole point of an arena. At least try to win, even put "use no expendibles" on there or something. |
| Begferdeth12-01-05, 10:13 PM | Dammit, I just realized... your gonna pass Chili! How am I gonna get him to the Lowest Power if you dont fight? Grrr... New anti-Maven tactics. "Dont accept any surrender. FIght to my death" :D Man, if that happens i can just see Maven on the slow motion replay, "NNNNnoooooooo......!!" Maybe then i'll just edit my character after pairings are announced to get the auto-loss and forfiet the -25% xp penalty. LOL HAHHA..i never thought Gladius would become about who's the biggest loser and who can lose the fastest and in what way. LOL -ToK |
| TelinArtho12-01-05, 10:49 PM | Vivi vs. Kalarthus is up! I wont spoil the ending for you, it's pretty graphic. This is the first match I have pitlorded, so tell me what you think. Two things (neither of them affect the fight): 1. Tattoos do cost double if they are personal - but they also have a base price of 50gp*ML*PL. So a ML3 tattoo (not augmented) would cost 300gp (not 150gp). If was augmented (per CoCo houserule), the PL would increase to 2, making the tattoo cost 600gp. 2. Tattoos that are above the minimum level cost credits. 1 credit per 2 ML above the minimum. Therefore - he was in violation and the tattoo could not have been used during the fight at all. |

I hope this week I receive something, I pitlord only 1 fight/week but let me pitolord it :D |
| Vathelokai12-02-05, 08:11 AM | @ToK + Pitbull: Tactics for Auburn vs. Boraxx sent. Man, I need some new spells. As soon as I get my Boccob's book, my tactics will be way more interesting. |
| Cerebus1312-02-05, 08:25 AM | Tactics for Pirotess emailed to Kaigan. Tactics for Dr. Hobo are still pending, I'll write them over lunch. Have recieved tactics from Luni for Ashhûr. Have NOT received tactics from TheMagister for Torgirr yet. I will be running my fight on Sunday, please get tactics in before then. |
| Mal-212-02-05, 09:13 AM | @SauroGrenom : I think there are some problems with Kracknol. He has no weight listed. This isn't a normally big deal, except: Crawling tattoos of skate only affect creatures weighing 200 lbs or less (by CoCo house rule). Some of his other crawling tattoos appear to be illegal. Crawling tattoos cannot be Personal spells, so Vigor, Force Screen, and Biofeedback crawling tattoos are all illegal. Edit: Tactic sent for Donak vs Kracknol |
| Erithmu12-02-05, 09:32 AM | @Erithmu: Sent you a PM about your tactics. It is crucial that you reply. Thanks. Response sent Via PM |
| waywreth12-02-05, 09:36 AM | @SauroGrenom : Crawling tattoos of skate only affect creatures weighing 200 lbs or less (by CoCo house rule). Tactics received. Can you however link the post in which the above question was answered? Additionally, I'm unsure on the crawling tattoos - I too thought they were only for offensive powers, and personal tattoos cost 100gp per CoCo ruling. However: Crawling tattoos resemble standard psionic tattoos, but their effects are often harmful rather than beneficial. Emphasis mine. I believe these issues need to be addressed before I can run the fight. |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 09:45 AM | Tactics for Talik, Tan and Feredeth have been received. I think that puts me at 7 sets of tactics... so I'm missing one: Aramur (Usurpator). I've got the other fights to run right now - but please do send them when you can (and if you have sent them to my email - I haven't checked it yet this morning, but will later on today). |
| Mal-212-02-05, 09:47 AM | Tactics received. Can you however link the post in which the above question was answered? Additionally, I'm unsure on the crawling tattoos - I too thought they were only for offensive powers, and personal tattoos cost 100gp per CoCo ruling. However: Crawling tattoos are for any non-personal powers. Most of those are offensive, but not all of them. As for a cite on the tattoo of skate, the closest I can come is the bottom of this page (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=444341&page=151&pp=30) in the Tavern III. On the next page I listed all the powers I could come up with that were both non-offensive and non-personal. In particular I was trying to figure out which powers could be crafted into the cheaper form of personal tattoos. Okay, there's not much to work with. I went over all of the 1st through 3rd level powers in the SRD, looking for powers that target a creature or creatures other than the caster. 1st: Astral Traveler, Conceal Thoughts 2nd: Bestow Power, Empathic Transfer, Psionic Repair Damage (only for constructs) 3rd: Time Hop Of those, Astral Traveller, Empathic Transfer, and Time Hop are pretty useless (at least for our purposes). Psionic Levitate is written basically the same way as Skate, so I assume it's out too. All of those are elligible for crawling tattoos, including psionic levitate I think. |
| TheMagister12-02-05, 09:53 AM | Have NOT received tactics from TheMagister for Torgirr yet. Abracadabra! Tactics for Torgirr vs. Ashhur the bewwy scewwy clewwic sent to your PM-box. TM |
| Snommelp12-02-05, 09:54 AM | @Snommelp: Tactics for Lissa sent via PM. Got 'em. I'll run the fight tomorrow. I still need tactics from Usurpator for Flamehair. |
| TheMagister12-02-05, 09:55 AM | Please send me tactics, last week one of my gladiator didn't sent me the tactic and so the fight was a won without battle. I hope this week I receive something, I pitlord only 1 fight/week but let me pitolord it :D Yeah. That kinda sucked. I spent, like, 45 minutes on those tactics, and the bug didn't even show. TM |
| Warclone12-02-05, 10:10 AM | Lunoria Evershine (Luni): TACTICS NOT RECEIVED |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 10:10 AM | What would you do when your partner was mauled by an 8-headed hydra, your mount was turned to stone by a medusa and you are down to 15hp? Come see in Old Bones... |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 10:47 AM | I was all ready to start on the Azriel vs Memorex fight and then I noticed Memorex has another problem... Tellish - sent you a PM - respond as quickly as you can so I can start on that fight. I guess I'll move on to the next one for now... |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 11:02 AM | @Warclone - Issues with Savour Die's tactics too - sent you a PM for clarification. |

| Luni12-02-05, 01:01 PM | Lunoria Evershine (Luni): TACTICS NOT RECEIVED I just snet them. :) |
| Usurpator12-02-05, 01:56 PM | I was all ready to start on the Azriel vs Memorex fight and then I noticed Memorex has another problem... Tellish - sent you a PM - respond as quickly as you can so I can start on that fight. I guess I'll move on to the next one for now... I saw that, last week he didn't quest for his cohort, this week he has a 36 pt. buy cohort instead of a 25 pt. buy one, as specified in the rules. |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 02:00 PM | I didn't even notice the 36pt buy... my note was much less than that... when he gets back to me I'll point this out as well I guess... |
| Ravashack12-02-05, 02:04 PM | Tactics sent to Dracazar by Email. Sorry for the delay--my internet was very sluggish and made it very painful to try to do anything, and it's finals season for me. |
| Usurpator12-02-05, 02:04 PM | I still need tactics from Usurpator for Flamehair. I just send a two-part essay on tactics for Flamehair. Had some trouble with food-poisoning and a stubborn internet connection. In the interest of fairness, Bastion's saving throws are too low, Tellish didn't include the +1 racial bonus that halflings get. |
| Usurpator12-02-05, 02:06 PM | @Usurpator Tactics for Sdentch vs. Goran the Beast sent by PM. TM I got them. Waiting for Goran's. My guess is that I will be running the fight monday-evening, looking at my schedule for this weekend. |
| Snommelp12-02-05, 02:10 PM | I just send a two-part essay on tactics for Flamehair. Had some trouble with food-poisoning and a stubborn internet connection. In the interest of fairness, Bastion's saving throws are too low, Tellish didn't include the +1 racial bonus that halflings get. I've got them. This looks to be an interesting fight... |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 02:14 PM | Taking a bit of a break on the Cyra Val vs Feradeth fight. Kaigan's and Cyra's tactics were both very good - its just going to take a little bit longer. Round 45 right now... |
| Begferdeth12-02-05, 02:35 PM | Faelto vs Gaston Dar'ath (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7898545&postcount=733) is done. TelinArtho, I think you added up your spell levels wrong. You have 7 total, not 10. You still had the 3/battle you cast though. |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 02:50 PM | Yup - looks like I have a typo... Thanks for running the fight. [EDIT] The funny thing is I thought you were just playing around when you called sauria a bison... apparently the only place I mention what sauria is - its under the race/class abilities - and I hadn't updated that from my original design of the character (when it actually WAS a bison - level 4 druid...). In case there's question - the stats are a heavy horse improved with the animal companion stats. /d |
| waywreth12-02-05, 02:52 PM | Faelto vs Gaston Dar'ath (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7898545&postcount=733) is done. TelinArtho, I think you added up your spell levels wrong. You have 7 total, not 10. You still had the 3/battle you cast though. I would've liked to have manifested my vigor... either at the beginning or at the end. Edit: Not upset with you Begferdeth, just upset with my tactics. I should've won that fight. |
| Stormwind12-02-05, 03:04 PM | Taking a bit of a break on the Cyra Val vs Feradeth fight. Kaigan's and Cyra's tactics were both very good - its just going to take a little bit longer. Round 45 right now... 45 rounds and still going ... hmmm ... I can't wait to see ... |
| TheMagister12-02-05, 03:14 PM | Faelto vs Gaston Dar'ath (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7898545&postcount=733) is done. You've got Faelto (sp?) moving too fast on rounds 2 and 3. When he moves in a diagonal, the first square costs 5' and the second diagonal costs 10'. Moving 6 squares on a diagonal is a movement rate of 45'/round. I mean, the "bison" would probably kill him next round, anyways, but still... TM |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 03:34 PM | Feradeth vs Cyra Val (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7899068) is up. Long fight - but I think I did pretty good with it. Let me know if there are issues. /d |
| Stormwind12-02-05, 04:13 PM | Feradeth vs Cyra Val (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7899068) is up. Long fight - but I think I did pretty good with it. Let me know if there are issues. /d Looks good to me ... Of course it would have been nice to win but no complaints here. Cyra awakens in the arena as the nimbus manifests about her, healing the hoofmarks that crushed her skull. She gets up and walks over to Faradeth, nods once in respect and then disappears out the arena doors. |
| Cerebus1312-02-05, 04:19 PM | @Sindorin My tactics for Dr. Hobo are taking longer than I anticipated to finish up, so I'll have to get to them after work. Expect them soon this evening. |
| waywreth12-02-05, 04:42 PM | Ok - my first fight is partially done and I'd like to make sure I'm not doing it horribly wrong. Could you please check it and make sure I didn't miss anything key? Combat will erupt violently next round otherwise. Kracknol vs. Donak (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7897749&postcount=732) |
| Mal-212-02-05, 04:50 PM | Ok - my first fight is partially done and I'd like to make sure I'm not doing it horribly wrong. Could you please check it and make sure I didn't miss anything key? Combat will erupt violently next round otherwise. Kracknol vs. Donak (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7897749&postcount=732) In round 3, there should be Material and Olfactory displays from Kracknol's powerstone of Vigor. In round 4, there should be a further Material display from activating the powerstone of Animal Affinity. I don't know if either of those give me a clue as to his location. |
| waywreth12-02-05, 04:54 PM | Thank you - I think I got that though, +40 to hide with invisibility and not moving make spotting impossible. And scent needs to be within 30' (and a move action to pinpoint). Edit: Note to self, buy gladiators see invisiblity item. |
| Sindorin12-02-05, 04:59 PM | @Sindorin My tactics for Dr. Hobo are taking longer than I anticipated to finish up, so I'll have to get to them after work. Expect them soon this evening. Sure thing. Awaiting those, and the tactics for Nexa as well. |
| Vathelokai12-02-05, 05:13 PM | In round 3, there should be Material and Olfactory displays from Kracknol's powerstone of Vigor. In round 4, there should be a further Material display from activating the powerstone of Animal Affinity. I don't know if either of those give me a clue as to his location. Thank you - I think I got that though, +40 to hide with invisibility and not moving make spotting impossible. And scent needs to be within 30' (and a move action to pinpoint). Edit: Note to self, buy gladiators see invisiblity item. Material: The subject or the area is briefly slicked with a translucent, shimmering substance. The glistening substance evaporates after 1 round regardless of the power’s duration. Sophisticated psions recognize the material as ectoplasmic seepage from the Astral Plane; this substance is completely inert. Olfactory: An odd but familiar odor brings to mind a brief mental flash of a long-buried memory. The scent is difficult to pin down, and no two individuals ever describe it the same way. The odor originates from the manifester and spreads to a distance of 20 feet, then fades in less than a second (or lasts for the duration, at the manifester’s option). As per the invisibility rules, anything that invisible creature grabs after casting invis, does not turn invisible unless hid under clothing. So for 1 round, the invisible person would glisten. Scent ranges can double or triple for particularly powerfull scents. And it can be smelled from 50 ft. away in this instance. Concentration checks to hide displays are far more meaningful for the sneaky manifester. *EDIT* Shoot! Waywreth just logged off. Oh well. |
| Mal-212-02-05, 05:16 PM | Edit: Note to self, buy gladiators see invisiblity item. There really aren't any, are there? That are affordable, I mean. The closest I've been able to find are: A Lantern of Revealing (30,000 gp), or a psionic tattoo of Touchsight (1500 gp expendable). Are there any cheaper items that would work? |
| Vathelokai12-02-05, 05:18 PM | There really aren't any, are there? That are affordable, I mean. The closest I've been able to find are: A Lantern of Revealing (30,000 gp), or a psionic tattoo of Touchsight (1500 gp expendable). Are there any cheaper items that would work? You have to spend 15 credits to custom make one, but they run around 3000 gp... or was it 1200. Don't remember. A gladiator by name of Aquin bought one a few weeks back. |
| lonewolf12-02-05, 05:18 PM | Im still waiting for tactics from Book5 for Ba´al. Please send them asap, because I dont know how much time I will have on Saturday/Sunday. |
| Usurpator12-02-05, 05:20 PM | Sure thing. Awaiting those, and the tactics for Nexa as well. I just sent them. Also took me longer than anticpated. :) @Cerebus13: good luck |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 05:29 PM | You have to spend 15 credits to custom make one, but they run around 3000 gp... or was it 1200. Don't remember. A gladiator by name of Aquin bought one a few weeks back. Yup - Aquin bought a customized Hand of Glory (essentially) for 2400gp and 15 credits for 1/day See Invisibility. The hand of glory is actually a useful one as well if you have a character who can make use of the daylight ability (Aquin couldn't and that's why he didn't want it...). The extra ring slot is nice too... For 8k - you really can't beat it. There are other options as well - a cleric with invisibility purge is nice (lantern of revealing is 30k - way too much...). A gem of seeing is also an option, but also not cheap (75k I think). That's all of the items I can think of in the regular SRD - though there might be something in the psionics - not sure. |
| Usurpator12-02-05, 05:43 PM | @TelinArtho: PM'ed you the tactics for Aramur vs. Talik, a match of a Prince vs. a Dancer. ;) And I even managed with just half-a-page of tactics! |
| Mal-212-02-05, 05:50 PM | The hand of glory is actually a useful one as well if you have a character who can make use of the daylight ability (Aquin couldn't and that's why he didn't want it...). The extra ring slot is nice too... For 8k - you really can't beat it. Wow, I'd completely missed that! Now I know what Donak is saving up for next. |
| waywreth12-02-05, 06:35 PM | Ok - my first fight is up. Kracknol vs. Donak (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7897749&postcount=732) @Both - please see note about weapon crits and ranges at the bottom. |
| Cerebus1312-02-05, 06:59 PM | I just sent them. Also took me longer than anticpated. :) @Cerebus13: good luckI wasn't expecting a mirror matchup against another Monk/Druid so early in my career. Oh well, I think I kept my expenditures under the amount of gold for a loss so I should come out okay. |
| One_Winged_Angel12-02-05, 07:30 PM | Tactics recieved for Nexa...unfortunatly, I'm not the one running the fight! At least you didn't send them to your opponent! I forewarded them to Sindorin, who will hopefully be able to help you better than I. |
| Sindorin12-02-05, 07:58 PM | Interesting... somehow or other I ended up with three sets of tactics in my email. Good job guys. I'll be able to run the fight either saturday or sunday, depending on how much work I am able to get done. |
| Mal-212-02-05, 08:51 PM | Ok - my first fight is up. Kracknol vs. Donak (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7897749&postcount=732) @Both - please see note about weapon crits and ranges at the bottom. Looks good. Thanks for running, Waywreth. |
| Begferdeth12-02-05, 09:09 PM | Yeah, I was sitting at the end of round 1 wondering whether to go with the vigor or the energy missile. I figured that taking out the 'bison' would have been a better choice than getting 10 more hp that would have maybe gained you one more round. About that movement thing TheMagister said... Im just add squares up till I get 6 of them for 30'. Moving him back 1 or 2 would break the line of sight for that entangle... Gaston would have backed up the 5' before firing, and blow Sauria away with the energy missile. Then the entangle gets cast, another energy missile at Faelto, which probably wont kill him, and that Produce Flame would kill Gaston even without the last hit from Sauria, and Gaston falling prone... Well Waywreth, you have a chance! :D If you think you can make a DC 15 concentration check to cast while entangled, and do 17 points of damage with that last 3d6+3 Energy Missile (its possible!), you can take out Faelto before he finishes you off with the Produce Flame. Want me to toss it in there? Or keep as-is? I would've liked to have manifested my vigor... either at the beginning or at the end. Edit: Not upset with you Begferdeth, just upset with my tactics. I should've won that fight. |
| waywreth12-02-05, 09:22 PM | Do a 3 point vigor after the bison is dead! I kid, wasn't in my tactics... But sure give it a shot, although to be fair it's DC15+spell level concentration. |
| Book512-02-05, 09:57 PM | @lonewolf - tactics sent. @All/Huan - Umm what is the penalty for using a weapon that is larger than two-handed? I would presume its -4, but there is this one statement : If a weapon's designation would be changed to something other than light, one-handed, or two-handed by this alteration, the creature can't weild the weapon at all. Basically - AKA - a Halfling cannot wield a medium sized halberd. Correct? The other option is -4 (-2 for inappropriate size and -2 for just plain innappropriate). |
| TelinArtho12-02-05, 10:19 PM | If the weapon normally sized for you is 2-handed - then one size bigger is unweildable for you - and you've quoted the right section. (This was a violation that I called ToK on once for a character too absurd to mention...) |

I definately do not have any problems with the result of the fight. However moot, I would like to bring up a rules issue. Like I said, I'm obviously not lobbying for a change, but unless I'm blind/stupid, countersong would not have protected him from my first sleep. Countersong (Su) A bard with 3 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use his music or poetics to counter magical effects that depend on sound (but not spells that simply have verbal components). Each round of the countersong, he makes a Perform check. Any creature within 30 feet of the bard (including the bard himself) that is affected by a sonic or language-dependent magical attack may use the bard’s Perform check result in place of its saving throw if, after the saving throw is rolled, the Perform check result proves to be higher. If a creature within range of the countersong is already under the effect of a noninstantaneous sonic or language-dependent magical attack, it gains another saving throw against the effect each round it hears the countersong, but it must use the bard’s Perform check result for the save. Countersong has no effect against effects that don’t allow saves. The bard may keep up the countersong for 10 rounds. Sleep Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting] Level: Brd 1, Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S, M Casting Time: 1 round Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level) Area: One or more living creatures within a 10-ft.-radius burst Duration: 1 min./level Saving Throw: Will negates Spell Resistance: Yes A sleep spell causes a magical slumber to come upon 4 Hit Dice of creatures. Creatures with the fewest HD are affected first. Among creatures with equal HD, those who are closest to the spell’s point of origin are affected first. Hit Dice that are not sufficient to affect a creature are wasted. Sleeping creatures are helpless. Slapping or wounding awakens an affected creature, but normal noise does not. Awakening a creature is a standard action (an application of the aid another action). Sleep does not target unconscious creatures, constructs, or undead creatures. Material Component A pinch of fine sand, rose petals, or a live cricket. Notice it says language dependent, sonic, or otherwise sound-dependent abilities, but specifically not just spells with verbal components. And as far as I can see, besides a verbal component, sleep has none of the prerequisites for being effected by countersong. What do you think? |

| Usurpator12-03-05, 04:24 AM | I wasn't expecting a mirror matchup against another Monk/Druid so early in my career. Oh well, I think I kept my expenditures under the amount of gold for a loss so I should come out okay. How you think I feel, with Hobo suddenly popping out of the woodworks after I surveyed the ECL 6 league and prepared my character? I don't know, didn't look at my expenditures, just too many contingencies, but until now they have never been higher than the reward for a loss, so I should be fine. Is Hobo a re-activated character? And I noticed Hobo's alignment is neutral, monks must be lawful, so he should have either been lawful neutral from the start, or it costs you an extra 5 credits... (you've spent plenty already on the character). Monk/druids don't have many alignment options... ;) |

I guess you can remove a number of spells from that list too: Countersong has no effect against effects that don’t allow saves. For example: the whole 'Holy Word' series only allows a save versus the banisment effect, so contersong is practically useless against them as well. |

Yeah, but it is partialy effective. I think I'll just put a note about that, and leave it on the list. I do think it interesting that bards could be very effective against kineticists, if they were silly enough to focus on sonic energy attacks. *EDIT* Note has been added. Also disclaimer about alter self (you loose your races (ex) ablilites) and disclaimer about shared spells with famiilar (magic items (i.e. scrolls) don't share) have been added. I haven't looked at your bard notes in the guildhouse, but I ran across something neat the other day in my tabletop game. Bards can counter howlers! There are plenty of sonic mind affecting special abilities in the Monster Manual. How would you (as a bard) like to spare your party the effects of a Frost Worm's trill attack? Eh? Eh? | Kaigan12-03-05, 11:01 AM | I just finished pitlording an EXTREMELY close and exciting fight between Eiletha Surion (Kaigan) and Lunoria Evershine (Luni)! I feel I narrated it well. Please let me know what you think of it! I think you did a great job, especially when my tactics failed. I just have one concern, not major, but it may change the fight. You used my scroll of shocking grasp. But also, during the grapple you could have used my actual spell, since I only used 1 of my 2 usable spell levels during the fight, but it's your call on that, and I believe the my character would have intelligently used that in a grapple situation when the was nothing else that she could do. But other than that, congrats on the long fight. Kaigan |

| Ravashack12-03-05, 11:46 AM | I could have sworn I wrote "switch to melee after firing" somewhere in there (so that I can actually USE the shield), but I guess I didn't. Dracazar, you shouldn't be calculating in the Shield's AC if I'm firing the Light Crossbow. Plus, I can't reload if the bolts are on the ground or otherwise not in my hand instead of the Shield and I'm 5 ft stepping AWAY from them (kind of a big hint to switch to melee right there). Edit: I'll hold off on editing Perius for today so that you can see that what goes into my AC was indeed listed next to it previous to this fight. He should have an AC of 15 without the shield (and hence why I wanted it equipped ASAP). Oh well, I was pretty doomed the instant Dispel Psionics failed to get rid of Force Screen. Edit: More errors--if I didn't emphasize it enough, I can't reload with a Shield in my hand at all, but you didn't follow up with my request to take out the shield and instead started to use bolts from my normal supply, which you shouldn't have been able to do if you had followed my request to drop all existing bolts on the ground. Regardless, when you do that, you have to list how many I used at the bottom and whether missed ones broke or not. |
| Gonbow12-03-05, 11:52 AM | @Dracazar Thanks for running the battle, looks alright. And yes, breaking LOS did kind snag my plans to charge, but I expected him to at least move a bit and /then/ I could charge him. @Ravashack My apologizes for the sblocks, I forgot that using fonts rather messes up firefox, it should be fixed now. |
| King Uther12-03-05, 01:18 PM | @Iced Yes, Dissolving Touch can be added that way. Look at Virgo's 1st 2-3 fights. He buffed with it, then grappled enough to 1-hit kill everyone. I believe someone last 2 rounds of grappling, though. 4d6+unarmed/armor spikes+STR is a good deal. |

I believe someone last 2 rounds of grappling, though. 4d6+unarmed/armor spikes+STR is a good deal. Sweet, this gives rise to another question - Can shocking grasp be used in conjunction with dissolving touch? Is there anything prohibiting me from manifesting dissolving weapon on a pair of gloves, dissolving touch on myself, grappling (discharging dissolving touch) and then using my gloves dissolving weapon prebuff? Can psionic fist be applied to attacks with spiked gauntlets? If I buy spiked gauntlets, can I choose to drop them as a weapon (free action) or will I have to use their damage values for my unarmed strikes the remainder of the battle? last and completely unrelated to my other questions - With skills, how many skill points are you allowed to buy in a specific skill per level? For example, I have a third level character without the hide skill. I add a level of rogue. My max skill ranks for my character level is now Can I spend seven of my rogue skill points to buy the seven ranks and bring my skill up to par with a straight rogue of my level? |
| Guildmaster (TLT)12-03-05, 03:17 PM | Sweet, this gives rise to another question - Can shocking grasp be used in conjunction with dissolving touch? Is there anything prohibiting me from manifesting dissolving weapon on a pair of gloves, dissolving touch on myself, grappling (discharging dissolving touch) and then using my gloves dissolving weapon prebuff? For example, I have a third level character without the hide skill. I add a level of rogue. My max skill ranks for my character level is now Can I spend seven of my rogue skill points to buy the seven ranks and bring my skill up to par with a straight rogue of my level? In order... No, you cannot use dissolving touch and shocking grasp at the same time. Using the transparancy rules, one would go away as soon as the other is cast/manifested, just like casting one spell after another would. Spiked gauntlets are weapons. Psionic fist works with unarmed strikes. To do what you want to do, you would have to apply psionic weapon to the spiked gauntlet, in which case you would do the spiked gauntlet damage plus the psionic weapon damage, but no unarmed strike damage. The gauntlets turn your unarmed strikes into armed attacks, so any unarmed damage from things like monk damage would not apply. Dropping gauntlets is not really done, per se....you would have to take them off. Dropping them is a free action, but I would call taking them off a move action. I'm not aware of any rules off the top of my head that regulate the removal of gauntlets as far as what action type they are. But yes, I know of no reason you could not remove them mid-battle. Yes, skill points work exactly that way. Take a look at Kronos as an example. He started with barbarian levels, of which hide and move silently are not class skills. As soon as he took rogue levels, he began dumping extra skill points into them so that they got to the maximum allowable skill rank for his level. |
| Book512-03-05, 03:34 PM | Sweet, this gives rise to another question - Can shocking grasp be used in conjunction with dissolving touch? No see above Is there anything prohibiting me from manifesting dissolving weapon on a pair of gloves, dissolving touch on myself, grappling (discharging dissolving touch) and then using my gloves dissolving weapon prebuff? Yes, gloves are not a weapon - they are clothing. If you were wearing spiked guantlets however.. Can psionic fist be applied to attacks with spiked gauntlets? No. psionic fist applies to natural weapons and unarmed strikes - spiked gauntlets ARE a weapon. If I buy spiked gauntlets, can I choose to drop them as a weapon (free action) or will I have to use their damage values for my unarmed strikes the remainder of the battle? :mymy: and I thought I was going to answer all of these without looking... there is no explicit statment differentiating the "simple light weapon" from anyothers in that regard so yeah looks like a free action to me. last and completely unrelated to my other questions - With skills, how many skill points are you allowed to buy in a specific skill per level? | Mal-212-03-05, 04:02 PM | It was my understanding that prebuffing with dissolving weapon is not permitted. Is this true? I belive you are allowed to pre-buff with dissolving weapon, but only under certain circumstances. First: you can't buy it as a spellcasting service (because it is range Personal). You can invoke it out of a powerstone, but only if you don't have to roll a caster level check to invoke the stone. So, you can only prebuff with it if you manifest it from memory, manifest it from a powerstone as a manifestor level 4+ Psychic Warrior, or manifest it from a dorje. |
| Book512-03-05, 04:39 PM | Minesbiggarinyers vs Ba'al of the Grave vs Maleir Solaryl / Free for all is up! Well, maybe Ba'al will have the inverse of Tan's record... Feh! Not really expecting much out of Ba'al for now. Unlike somepeople however I will at least roll some dice. Though one o' them there dorje o' fire blast or whatnot... hmmm. Ranged touch right... hmmm, a cop should have a "firearm" :D Thanks Lonewolf - sorry it took me so long. |

You are tight, your AC is 3 less, this is an error that goes against Lort. The result of the fight would not change but this error prevented me to use melee because it would be more efficient the +7 (+6, +1 feat) ranged than the +5 of the melee weapon. Edit: I'll hold off on editing Perius for today so that you can see that what goes into my AC was indeed listed next to it previous to this fight. | MystErikEry12-03-05, 07:29 PM | @Dracazar and Kaigan: Tactics received. I'll start on the fight right now. This is the first fight I've actually had time to pitlord, so I'm not sure how long it'll take. Heh, wish me luck. @TelinArtho and Macbrea : Tactics received. I don't think I'll be able to get this done tonight, though; it'll have to be done sometime on Sunday. I apologize in advance if this is the case! If things go smoothly, though, and if I have enough time, it might be up later this evening. |
| Usurpator12-03-05, 07:33 PM | @Sindorin: You made a comment about Nexa's (and Hobo's) character sheets being inefficient. I am happy to please my Pitlords, but can you please point out what exactly you find inefficient about it? Since I just reformatted it to make it more like the recently proposed new character sheet format. I find it fairly easy to read, my biggest complaint is that there is just too much information in there. And that's not an easy problem to fix. |
| Usurpator12-03-05, 07:38 PM | I remade his build and kept the old character sheet. Finally got around to entering him on the roster this week. I think it is allowed, but because you spelled your classes as Druid/Monk and not as Monk/Druid I assumed you were a Druid first and then turned Monk. And since you were Druid5/Monk1 and I assumed you started as Druid3 and later went Monk. |

Not the most interesting fight. |
| lonewolf12-03-05, 07:45 PM | @Dr. Funk: I have one big issue about the fight Khoronus vs Fallon: I wrote in the tactics section that I always wanted to claim cover from my mount when possible, yet you didnt even try it. That could very well stopped the 20 damage arrow and could give me a chance in the fight. |

I don't make this stuff up. I'm just reporting what the rules are. I mean, it's a specific example in the rules thread as something you're not allowed to do: Example: You can use NPC spellcasting to prebuff with a Deeper Darkness Spell (day/lvl), or Continual Flame (permanent) on one of your objects. You can also buy a Blur (min/lvl) or Haste (rnd/lvl) spell but they would run out long before you enter the arena. You could request a Create Water (instantanous) if it would be to any use to you or you could Raise Dead your deceased companion (instantaneous) but you may not order Dissolving Weapon (instantaneous but personal) nor could you buy a Forbiddance (permanent but affecting arena). |
| Maraxus12-03-05, 08:21 PM | I don't accept this. If you read the spell, you see, that personal in this case means: "The weapon you are holding". And since the power only discharges on a successful hit (not touch), you can pass the weapon around and do whatever you like with it. However: "It makes no sense, but a rule is a rule." is one argument. Okay, it is bad, to explain rules with in-game reasons and then ignore the exceptions where this goes wrong, but ... well, that's the way it works. If it sais, you may not use a manifester service for that, than you can't. Now, I'd like to know, since when there is this rule, that you can't pay a manifester-service for dissolving weapon, so that I know, wheather I have to remove the light hammers of dissolving weapon from Mythos. |
| waywreth12-03-05, 08:23 PM | @Dr. Funk: I have one big issue about the fight Khoronus vs Fallon: I wrote in the tactics section that I always wanted to claim cover from my mount when possible, yet you didnt even try it. That could very well stopped the 20 damage arrow and could give me a chance in the fight. You didn't make the spot vs hide so you're technically flatfooted to that shot anyway regardless of cover from the horse or not, so I believe it hits anyway. |
| Warclone12-03-05, 08:44 PM | I think you did a great job, especially when my tactics failed. Kaigan Thanks for the compliment. Actually, I had you use both your spell levels. When you were doing the shootout with Luni, I had you cast true strike the round you drew your bow to get an automatic hit the next round. Turns out you needed it, becaue the round you got the +20 bonus you rolled a 2. (Elie casts true strike and draws her bow) RD10 Luni bow TOHIT vs. AC22 (1d20+5=14) Elie: (3,-15) [18/18] <0/2> (ExpedRet 6) Luni: (0,-7) [21/29] <0/0> RD11 Elie truestrike bow TOHIT vs. AC19 (1d20+28=30) RD11 Elie bow DMG (1d8+1=6) RD11 Luni shot vs. covered Elie (AC22) (1d20+5=12) Elie: (3,-15) [18/18] <0/2> (ExpedRet 5) Luni: (0,-7) [15/29] <0/0> |
| MystErikEry12-03-05, 08:53 PM | @Dracazar : PMd you about a problem I'm having with tactics... >_> This fight won't be up until tomorrow, I guess XD Sigh. I really hope the other one won't have problems, since otherwise it won't be up until Monday, which is apparently after the "deadline" >_>; |
| lonewolf12-03-05, 08:54 PM | You didn't make the spot vs hide so you're technically flatfooted to that shot anyway regardless of cover from the horse or not, so I believe it hits anyway. right. But I should have get an spot check in round 1 and both spot checks should be made with the +2 bonus from favored enemy. |
| Luni12-03-05, 08:57 PM | I don't accept this. If you read the spell, you see, that personal in this case means: "The weapon you are holding". Range A power’s range indicates how far from you it can reach, as defined in the Range entry of the power description. A power’s range is the maximum distance from you that the power’s effect can occur, as well as the maximum distance at which you can designate the power’s point of origin. If any portion of the area would extend beyond the range, that area is wasted. Standard ranges include the following. Personal: The power affects only you. Since it is powered up until it hits something, it can't leave your person. Literal translation, says that the charge dissipates if you get disarmed, since it is no longer on your person. I'm not too sure how this applies to thrown weapons though. |
| Warclone12-03-05, 08:57 PM | @Warclone - that fight you ran is awesome! Great effort, it must have taken forever to do! Thanks for the compliment. It took me about five hours to complete, actually, but that was in part because its only the second fight I've run. |
| Book512-03-05, 10:42 PM | Thanks for the compliment. It took me about five hours to complete, actually, but that was in part because its only the second fight I've run. what!?! Ive been doing this for like two months now and while ive shaved my original two day task to a 8-10 hour thing.. 5 hours to do that? Whats wrong with me :nonono: @Iced PM |
| Dr. Funk12-03-05, 10:49 PM | right. But I should have get an spot check in round 1 and both spot checks should be made with the +2 bonus from favored enemy. My mistake. In round 1 - you move and have LOS on Fallon and Fallon can't hide because he hasn't acted yet. I'll be editing the fight and posting it when it is finished. |
| Dr. Funk12-03-05, 11:19 PM | Fight has been edited. Since the deep crystal stays powered up, it only kept the fight going for one round more - Khoronus was unable to setup the grapple with a bad touch. |

Whats wrong with me :nonono: @Iced PM Well a friend or two has complimented me on my efficiency before.. I'll tell you what I did basically: Beforehand I open up the arena map in paint, zoom in and exactly cut out a square, then open up 2 more paint programs and paste the square into each. I then zoom in on the square and either use a shrunk character picture and put it on there or I draw with pencil a letter and then color it for the person. I use mozilla firefox, and I have a tab for each character sheet, and a tab for each tactics PM, a tab for the box where I post the fight, a tab for the online roller, a tab with picturebucket.com for posting pictures, and a tab with a link to d20srd.org where I look up various rules. So then basically a just copy/paste the markers from one paint window to the blank arena map and then draw lines, crop it, save it as BobJack5.jpg (etc) and then open up the arena map in that window again. Both the invisiblecastle and photobucket automatically provide you a img formatted link at the bottom of the page. From there I just click really fast and use my 145wpm typing and I started at 5:45 and ended at 10:30 |

I also use Opera instead of Firefox, because some sblocks just don't want to open in Firefox. |

| lonewolf12-04-05, 03:17 AM | Fight has been edited. Since the deep crystal stays powered up, it only kept the fight going for one round more - Khoronus was unable to setup the grapple with a bad touch. I accept the fight now. I knew from the start that this fight would be very hard to win. Thanks for pitlording. |
| Sindorin12-04-05, 03:24 AM | @Sindorin: You made a comment about Nexa's (and Hobo's) character sheets being inefficient. Yeah, that might be the case. I was just frustrated with the 50000 character limit too  . Dr. Hobo's items are arranged in an interesting way, but other than that, now that I really look at it after starting into the fight, all seems well with both sheets! I'm up to about round 4-5 and I need to take a break. It has been going slow because I haven't pitlorded in a while and I am also shooting for no need for reruns - I'm being very careful... Both of your tactics against each others' are making an interesting matchup... I'm excited to see how it ends up! |
| Luni12-04-05, 03:54 AM | Vandelar and Krunch hit a snag... It hurts my brain on whats going on! :( |
| MysticMonk200512-04-05, 05:19 AM | Ack, not much to do about that one. Just a quick note, Lissa shoulf of been rapid shooting rounds 1 and 2 not that it would change the outcome. |
| Maraxus12-04-05, 08:41 AM | Can a mage out-shoot an archer? Find out in Zassl vs. Lissa! Wow, I really had not expected to win this. First I thought: Let's just play "looking good and not loosing to expencive". Invisibility is a nice spell, my favorite, still, but with the 1/3 rule it needs to be considered twice. |
| TheMagister12-04-05, 10:34 AM | I'm available to pick up any incompleted arena fights! Just PM me tactics and something that gives me permission to take the job off your hands, and I'll run it. TM |

| Snommelp12-04-05, 11:11 AM | Ack, not much to do about that one. Just a quick note, Lissa shoulf of been rapid shooting rounds 1 and 2 not that it would change the outcome. Actually, rounds 2 and 3, not 1 and 2. Sorry, guess my numbering system is a bit strange. If both hit (or one hits and crits) the fight could change, so I'll roll both right here: 3+9=12 misses, 8+9=17 misses Sorry. Fight stands. |
| Cerebus1312-04-05, 11:24 AM | Yeah, that might be the case. I was just frustrated with the 50000 character limit too  . I thought that method of listing them would save some text but its more of a headache to look at than it is worth. Edit: To save more space you can delete the section about racial/class abilities. It's rather useless if you have access to the SRD and is kinda long for the both of us since we are multiclass. |

| Ravashack12-04-05, 01:24 PM | Dracazar, I'm not trying to be a hardass, but when you have me using bolts from my normal supply you have to roll to check how many of the missed ones broke, and you need to list exactly how much my total loss of them is at the bottom with the other expendables. I don't have an unlimited supply and I can't finish my edits for the week if you don't do that, so I'd really like to not have to spam this fact until you notice and edit it in at the bottom of the fight. It's especially important if I get into ANOTHER long ranged shootout and how much ammo I have is suddenly questionable. |

Editting it in now that Torgirr will use one Alchemist's Fire and then switch to Acids when he sees that they are doing no damage to Ashhur. |
| TheMagister12-04-05, 04:16 PM | Oh, man...can't fight the dice. Torgirr rolled 3-4 times as much as Ashhûr on the attack rolls and still didn't get as many 15+ results as Ash did. And only getting two chances with the sniping, too. Stupid 3 backed up with a 4, backed up with Ash's SIXTEEN!! (sigh) Nicely run, Cerebus! I can't see anything wrong with the fight as-is; it went just exactly as I had forseen, except for the sorry-arse die-rolling and the full-round action cost of grenade-like weapons (I'm gonna look that up...never heard that before...) and the whole critted with a waraxe thing. Luni's new name: Lucky Luni! TM |
| Cerebus1312-04-05, 04:23 PM | @TheMagister Check this (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/actionsInCombat.htm#fullRoundActions) link for a table of all combat actions that take a full round. The Alchemy weapons were still the most viable way you had of doing damage to Ashhur, however you only had 4 bottles of Acid which would not have been enough to take him down and Resist Energy still had a pretty long duration left... |

| Luni12-04-05, 09:06 PM | @Luni: There is a major, major flaw in the fight. I pm'd you. I tried pm'ing you a second time, but your box is full. -ToK I freed up some space. As for Black Tentacles on walls/ceilings, I misunderstood the term "Underfoot". un·der·foot 1. Below or under the foot or feet; against the ground: trampled the beans underfoot. 2. At or under the foot or feet; on the ground: moist, cool, soft grass growing underfoot. Which specifically mentions ground, These waving members seem to spring forth from the earth, floor, or whatever surface is underfoot—including water. They grasp and entwine around creatures that enter the area, holding them fast and crushing them with great strength. And of course water isn't a "ground". You know, it doesn't say you can't have the tentacles come from thin air. Air can be a surface due to magic. :) About the Z-axis, the 5 means there are 5 squares underneath Krunch, not that he is 5 feet from the ground. I'll go edit that into the fight, as I await SoulLords opinion on the fight. |

Walls and perpendicular surfaces are not included in there. If "air" were a suitable surface because it's "magic" then u'd see a lot of giant octopi being summoned on top of people's heads on dry land to grapple them. But they say "suitable" surface...tentacles are mildly worded in the same way, except they go farther by saying "underfoot", meaning, it's coming from the bottom up. -ToK |

| Cerebus1312-04-05, 11:18 PM | Revisions on Nexa vs. the Hobo are completed.Looks good now. Round 2 is slightly different because I forgot that Hobo was Entangled at the time, so his AC is only 18 and Nexa only has a +9 to hit so she rolled a 19 in that round. In any event Hobo still lost, so back to the drawing board. I'll be sure to replace my tattoos with legitimate versions of themselves so I can actually USE them in my next battle... |
| SauroGrenom12-05-05, 02:21 AM | Finally finished the fight. Took me longer that I expected to make the time to finish this. Sorry for the delay. You both had tactics to me within a few days, but I just couldn't make the time to run it. Validi Dezox (Iced) vs Shakari (Luni) (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7907324&postcount=739) It didn't turn out well for Shakari. Problem was that Shakari never heard Validi well enough to pinpoint him untill it was too late. Your pets almost got Validi in the end though. Funny thing is that if you had cast Bear's Endurance instead of Bull's Strength then you would have probably won due to the hp increase. |
| Vathelokai12-05-05, 03:26 AM | @Luni + ToK: Just curious; ETA on fights saffron vs. pale and auburn vs. boraxx? |

The miscalculated AC was one of the problems I saw too. There are still some other issues, but my single major issue would requires that a large part of the fight is rerun, and I don't like to request that when I have won and my opponent is satisfied. About Hobo's alignment: you started him as 3rd lvl character? Since from your Feat selection it seems you had 3 druid levels before you went Monk, and thus still require an alignment swtich (since you took Craft Wondrous Item at 3rd lvl, and it has a caster level of 3rd as prerequisite, you must have been a Druid3 at the time, and must have taken your monk level later.....) If you started as a 4th lvl character, it's ok. |

This is by far the longest run (however most interesting) fight I have ever run. It was a rollercoaster of good and bad rolls and the fight was completly unpredictable. I hope I dont have too many errors... |
| Cerebus1312-05-05, 07:20 AM | The miscalculated AC was one of the problems I saw too. There are still some other issues, but my single major issue would requires that a large part of the fight is rerun, and I don't like to request that when I have won and my opponent is satisfied. About Hobo's alignment: you started him as 3rd lvl character? Since from your Feat selection it seems you had 3 druid levels before you went Monk, and thus still require an alignment swtich (since you took Craft Wondrous Item at 3rd lvl, and it has a caster level of 3rd as prerequisite, you must have been a Druid3 at the time, and must have taken your monk level later.....) If you started as a 4th lvl character, it's ok.Yes, basically that is what I had wanted to do. Levels 1-3 were Druid so I could pick up feats Scribe Scroll & Craft Wondrous. Monk level was picked up at 4 or 5 (doesn't matter when), and Druid filled in the rest. I never planned on anymore levels in Monk after that so I figured I would change my alignment outside of the arena and officially become an Ex-Monk. What other problem did you have with the fight? |
| Usurpator12-05-05, 08:47 AM | What other problem did you have with the fight? My major issue is a tactics issue: after Hobo took animal form, I wanted to use the scroll of hide from animals and then move to the Hide & Harass part of my tactics, not continue shooting arrows (see tactics). Currently Nexa is wasting two rounds to move away and cast from the scroll for little actual benefit. If Nexa is just shooting arrows, it might even be better to continue doing so instead of wasting those two rounds... (even though also against my tactics) The idea was make myself undetectable and to harass you and the Dire Bat with Summon Swarm (since you cannot cure yourself anymore while you are in animal form, and thus you would slowly bleed to death), and if that failed to get both of you, summon Hippogriff(s) to attack Hobo, and if that failed, engage you in a grapple after buffing properly. Once in the Grapple you would have to hit AC 24 to attach, and with a to hit bonus of +7 and -4 to attack in a grapple, you would need to roll a 20. Then I would just grapple you to death with a +13/+13 flurry vs. a +11 defensive grapple. Some other things appear after the round with the tactics issue (like your AC miscalculation), some to my advantage, some to yours, but if editing them would somehow produce a loss for Nexa, I would ask to rerun it with appropriate application of tactics, thereby removing the need to edit that part. Since that would mean rerunning a large part of the battle, and I think the odds in that scenario are in my favor, I don't require a rerun, it would just cost Sindorin more time. My biggest goal was to surprise Hobo by a blitzkrieg entangle (which was succesfull), and force him to go into animal form early (which was also accomplished), thus eliminating a lot of his buffing and attack choices (scrolls, potions). My next goal was to suprise you by hiding from Hobo through use of the hide from animals scroll (which was also succesfull). So generally I am content that some of my 'tricks' worked, even though the there were some problems with following my tactics after said tricks were executed. In advance I didn't know if Hobo would choose to go for 'flying around as an eagle and hitting Nexa with call lightning' or a multitude of other scenario's. I wanted to reduce possible scenario's as quickly as possible and write good tactics for the remaining ones. |
| Sindorin12-05-05, 09:49 AM | The only thing I have to say about following either set of tactics was that they were 'loopy' tactics. The reason it would take me so long to do each round was because I had trouble figuring out what your tactics would want you to do becuase each of your tactics had hooks that led to each other. In Usurpator's case, there is even a clause that says "as a pitlord you can mix and match these tactics" or something to that effect. All in all, I am sorry that you don't think that I followed your tactics, but usually if I don't follow someone's tactics that means that someone's tactics are loopy and unclear. I had Nexa keep shooting because it was working and she had surprised Dr. Hobo and disrupted his tactics, and yours even said keep shooting. I was not even sure where I would have needed ride checks because Duskseeker is not trained for combat riding as Cerebus13 pointed out, but that doesn't matter much either because Nexa dismounts from the bat after she is attacked the first time. From there, the defend trick kicked in and I had the bats start attacking each other (which did nothing). |
| TelinArtho12-05-05, 09:55 AM | The long winded Silas Vs SirValken (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=7921485#post7921485) is now up. This is by far the longest run (however most interesting) fight I have ever run. It was a rollercoaster of good and bad rolls and the fight was completly unpredictable. I hope I dont have too many errors... The only issue I can see is that you raged Silas without regard to his tactics: If at any point I fall to 15 or fewer hp, use the wand. If at any point I fall to 5 or fewer hp, stow the wand, rage for the extra hp, and if wielding my sword, wield it two-handed. This is the only point at which he describes using rage. In round 14, I reduce him to 10hp - so he should use his wand. [EDIT]Even if he does rage in round 14 (which he shouldn't), per my tactics: If he rages, withdraw from melee until he allows me to a) charge him with my lance or sword or b) run out his rage. |
| NiQil12-05-05, 11:28 AM | Yeah.....I did rage too early....and I also raged too shortly. I only raged for 4 rounds and I have 7 rounds of rage. So that is definitely going to change the fight. With me not raging, there is less damage done to Foreman (the hits will still hit even without the rage), which means he will not die when he does, and I would be healing with my wand in melee with him there. Since the rage should not have occurred when it did, it is also possible that my ranged attacks will change, due to no fatigue penalties. Lets get the rage issue corrected first and then see where we stand. As much as I want to stick it to Sir Valkin (actually just Foreman...I despise that horse LOL), I want to do it cleanly. |

| MysticMonk200512-05-05, 12:56 PM | ... Niquil.. You do realize that Silas won right? I raged instead of healed because your buffs were winking out and it looked like you were about to start taking alot more damage then your wand could heal. I ended the rage so that you could heal since you had 2 hp left when rage was over and if he hit you you probly would of died. If you want me to change this though I'll do it when I get home tonight. |

I ended the rage so that you could heal since you had 2 hp left when rage was over and if he hit you you probly would of died. If you want me to change this though I'll do it when I get home tonight. Yes, I realize he won...but he won against his tactics. Bear in mind that had you not raged, both of my attacks would still hit Foreman, but he would still be alive (at something like 2-3 hp). I can still heal up with the wand there, and not use the rage since I didn't say to. I'm also not sure if you can prematurely end a rage...I believe it has to run it's course. And that is why I did not want to use it unless I was about to due (5 hp or less). In essence, what will need to happen is that the rage gets taken out, the attacks that are there will be modified to take out the rage, and new rounds with new attacks will need to be added in there because Foreman will still be alive. The remaining attacks after Silas kill Foreman are all ranged (except for one by Sir Valkin after Foreman dies), so those will stay the same but will need to be adjusted to remove the fatigue penalties. But it is possible that the ranged battle never happens, because Foreman and Valkin could very well kill Silas before Foreman dies with a 4-1 attacks per round ratio in their favor and my buffs going down. As I said....I want to win....but I want to win fairly and by my tactics. |

| TelinArtho12-05-05, 01:38 PM | NOTE: @Dr. Funk A Pearl of Power only allows you to recall a spell you already cast. It does NOT recall back a spell slot with which you may cast a different spell. While the Pearl only recalls the spell and the spell levels you used - you can use those spell levels on other spells if you want. For instance, he has 4 spell levels and casts in this order: 1. Spiritual Weapon (2/4 left) 2. Doom (1/4 left) 3. Recall Spiritual Weapon (3/4 left) 4. Cast Hold Person (1/4 left) 5. Recall Doom (2/4 left) 6. Cast Cure light wounds (1/4 left) etc This was something I verified before creating Kraegin in July and it has been run this way for every fight that I've seen since then. |

| TelinArtho12-05-05, 01:43 PM | For the purpose of posterity, if I get a chance today, I'll go back and find where I had posted about it (and perhaps forward the link on to Cerebus for his FAQ). I remember it was in Tavern III though. Well, it wasn't as ironclad a discussion as I remember it - but no one disagreed at the time - so I guess that's why it has been run that way since: Here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6685084&postcount=787) is the original post I made. Malither76 replied that I was correct in the post following. I could have sworn there was a more in-depth discussion about it - but I haven't found anything to substantiate my poor memory... |

| Usurpator12-05-05, 02:21 PM | Talik vs Aramur (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7923794) is up. /d Telin, thank you for running the fight. The only thing I saw is that you didn't include Aramur's favored enemy bonus on his damage. It will not change the outcome obviously, only end the fight a bit sooner. About Knockdown: I think disallowing Knockdown is not a 'little known fact' as specified in the WAR thread, it is a CoCo house rule. There have been no convincing arguments other than a 3.0 Errata entry, which predates the current Knockdown feat. Since later sources overrule earlier sources, the extra attack should be allowed (there would not be a need for the feat to be errated at all if it wasn't possible before) I can accept that they forgot to include the errata when they added Knockdown to the SRD, but then makes it a house rule if it is disallowed. A sensible house rule, sure, but still a house rule. It also makes me think about ditching the feat. |
| TelinArtho12-05-05, 02:25 PM | Yup - I did forget about the extra damage. If there are further changes - I'll be sure to include that when I go back in. As to the knockdown - whatever you want to call it - there was a discussion about it and the ruling was that it is not allowed to produce an extra attack on a trip built off of knockdown. You can appeal this decision - but given the previous argument - I don't know that the ruling would change. /d |

I just didn't know it was officially 'decided' yet, since it is not a question of intepreting unclear rules, but not allowing something that is pretty clear in the rules (but probably not intended). In other words: I am all for disallowing it. |

| Sindorin12-05-05, 02:34 PM | Ah, thanks. |
| Luni12-05-05, 02:51 PM | Finally finished the fight. Faerie Fire is an AE spell, so there is no need to wait til pinpoint. Fireflame gets an AoO when Validi tries to move into my square to maintain the hold, I'm not sure if that would break a grapple or not. Zyazz can't use Impr. Grab on something medium size or bigger. And if you go through Shakari's other fights with grapplers, I always try to pin, not escape. And from my tactics: Always double move/run on my horse. I *never* want to be within 120' of Validi. I can shoot my bow while double moving/running. Use all my arrows, even the silver and cold iron ones. If he proves hard to hit, try entangle from memory. IF he is nearby, I should be backing up til I am 120' away from where I heard him. Let him keep double moving around the arena. |
| Luni12-05-05, 03:09 PM | I've edited Vandelar vs Krunch. Differences: Krunch does his diving charge, sunders a rod of silence. Vandelar tumbles away, and Krunch dies again. |
| Usurpator12-05-05, 03:10 PM | @Sindorin Could you please edit the rewards of Nexa vs. Dr. Hobo? Nexa has a 20% XP/gp. penalty due to uneven class levels. |
| SauroGrenom12-05-05, 03:26 PM | OK, I thought of every single one of these tings before I let them happen in the fight. Bellow are my comments in blue. Faerie Fire is an AE spell, so there is no need to wait til pinpoint. Fireflame gets an AoO when Validi tries to move into my square to maintain the hold, I'm not sure if that would break a grapple or not. Yes Faerie Fire is an AE spell. But its area is not large enough to hit the whole area where Shakari's listen check placed Validi's location in Round 2. Perhaps I shouldn't have said pinpoint. I realy ment pinpoint within 5' to ensure that he is hit by the spell. Shakari didn't have that untill Validi tries to charge (when she also got a perfect pinoint). If Shakari had cast her spell into a random square within the region where she had heard Validi there was about a 10% chance of getting him in the area. When Validi grapples Shakari he is unable to join Shakari on her horse because his size is large. As per CoCo house rules if you grapple someone mounted and cannot climb on the mount, then you grapple them from standing adjacent to the mount. Since there is no movement into Shakari's square, no AoO. BTW it would not break a grapple if the AoO hit. This rule turns out better for Shakari because the horse wouldn't be able to attack Validi in the following rounds if Validi was mounted as well. Zyazz can't use Impr. Grab on something medium size or bigger. Oh, I didn't know that. I'll have to look it up. That doesn't change the outcome anyway because Zyazz's grapple attempts all failed. BTW you didn't mention this while you were were fighting Sam a few weeks back when Zyazz pinned Sam and everyone else ganged up on him. ;) And if you go through Shakari's other fights with grapplers, I always try to pin, not escape. Your tactics had nothing in them about trying to pin if grappled. Your tactics were instead all about trying to make the battle a ranged battle where you avoided Validi. I tried to impliment your tactics to the best of my ability. It was a risk, but had it succeeded, then Shakari would have had a greater change of winning than in a grapple. If he is nearby, I should be backing up til I am 120' away from where I heard him. Let him keep double moving around the arena. Good point. I thought that if you had an objection you would bring this up. The problem was the Shakari didn't know Validi's location. So she could never be sure that she was 120' away untill she pinpointed him. A round had passed since she heard him, and she is necessarily uncertain if Validi moved undetected or stayed still. It would not have been possable for her to get much farther away without loosing LOS to the area where she last heard Validi. Your tactics said to hit him with a Faerie Fire if he was invisiable. I tried to make sure that was possible by keeping LOS to the area you last heard him and not putting walls between that would block your listen checks. |
| Luni12-05-05, 03:54 PM | I thought Sam was a gnome... @Valthelokai and ToK: I'll try to have your fight up later today. @macbrea/TelinArtho: I'll do your fight I picked up from MysterikEry tomorrow most likely |
| SoulLord12-05-05, 03:56 PM | Good Fight Krunch. Luni could you please be so kind as to add Vandelars profession money to the total? [+133 gp] ClockMaking And add a scroll of dispel magic to the stuff spent which was used to try to dispel Krunch's buffs unsucessfully I might add. |
| Sindorin12-05-05, 04:44 PM | @Sindorin Could you please edit the rewards of Nexa vs. Dr. Hobo? Nexa has a 20% XP/gp. penalty due to uneven class levels. Sure, I must be blind or something... I'll get to that. |

I got ganked on the character count, so i stripped out my formating and the descriptor text so i could just get it up. I will attempt to readd in some, but the post times currently are killing me. Few issues / questions that came up durring this fight: 1) Casting from a scroll while invisible... From Invisibility - "If the recipient is a creature carrying gear, that vanishes, too." From Scroll - "Activating a scroll requires reading the spell from the scroll. The character must be able to see and read the writing on the scroll." i initially said No, but sunwolf came back with .... Please check other fights -- here are are few examples of casting from a scroll while invisible: Harvester casts fly from scroll while invisible: in round 2 Aranor casts see invisiblity from scroll while invisible in round 2 ...really? you can cast from a scroll while invisible. Other than prescident, can i get a source on this?? 2) Drawing a scroll as part of a move action (+1 BAB), i wanted to, but felt safer not. It doesn't change my outcome, but.... can you?? 3) Sunder/Shatter. Potions and the like Sundered (Shatter) are restored at the end just like weapons...right? Otherwise, Caspian may not have been so receptive to the surrender offer... 4) Surrender. I surreneded with Caspian even though i wasnt given a surrender condition. I would not be opposed to running out the battle if NiQil requested it, but it was beginning to look real bleak. |
| Sindorin12-05-05, 05:40 PM | You raise great questions, and I think I can hack at some of them. 1) You can cast from a scroll while invisible because you can see your own items. This has been, as examples you found punctuate, the way we have handled this in the past :) 2) A scroll is not a weapon-like object, so you cannot draw it while moving even if you have a base attack bonus of +1 or more. I have written tactics that thought you could do this as well, and it was a very helpful rude awakening (I also mislorded fights with that mistake as well). 3) If you are the one who breaks/consumes/otherwise disposes of your items, they are considered past expenditures. If an opponent does this to one of your items (or even steals it via disarm, etc.) then you get it back at the end of the fight. (Though lately as our wizards get up there week by week I know that the question of Mordenkainen's Dysjunction will be raised and questions will be asked about how to handle that one. 4) I usually do not surrender a gladiator unless they 1. have no way of damaging their opponent before their eventual kill (i.e. blind/deaf) unless tactics say never give up or something like that. It's the pitlord's choice and as a pitlord if you have a character surrender you paint a target on your forehead making you eventually have to change it or re run it with something corrected. It is your perogative to surrender someone's character, but keep in mind that you might have to rerun it. Hope that helps. |
| Maraxus12-05-05, 05:46 PM | No casting from scrolls while invisible? Hey, that would be horrible! :) Next, you want Int-checks to find the right pocked for spell components, or the right potions. ;) It should also be nearly impossible to shoot somebody and much harder to strike somebody, if you don't see your weapons. ... In fact, I hope that you can still see yourself while invisible. 2) No, you can't, only weapon-like objects in easy acces can be drawn that way. 3) Yes they are. 4) If your opponent has 240 rounds to let arrows rain down on you, that sounds like a good time to surrender. Either that, or you pick up your opponents missed arrows and use them as improvised thrown weapons. ;) (through this should not work very good against high-flying opponents...) |

Also, make sure you add the rewards to the battle post (1200 gp/xp for Leif and 400 gp/xp for Caspian....Caspian also makes 84 gp from his skill earnings). ...does the familiar not count against the 25% thing?? |
| NiQil12-05-05, 06:30 PM | I understand that this is how they've been played in the past. I'm looking for specific rules that i can show my players on this. House rule? i'm fine with that as well... im just looking for some source to quote Source?? Source?? I submit that the two scrolls tucked on my left side sash are just as easy to draw as part of a move action as your wand, or... great sword. The scroll of invisibility in my right pocket... just as easy. If i can find my wallet in a drunken stooper, or my key chain in the pitch black, pulling the "right scroll" should be a no brainer. I cannot read the my licence without being able to "see" it. Again, im just looking for a cite on this... ...does the familiar not count against the 25% thing?? No, class allies such as familiars and animal companions do not have penalties to xp/gp. As to the scroll issue...it is in the FAQ. Wands, rods and staffs are classified as weaponlike objects....scrolls and potions are not. And by extension, dorjes (psionic wand equivalent) and psicrowns (staff equivalent) are also weapon-like objects....though psicrowns are usually worn. |

| Sunwolf12-05-05, 07:16 PM | @Ayrynthyn Congrats of your first pitlorded fight! It is good that you ask questions if you don't believe that someone's tactics are correct. Or work even. We all learn how the rules work that way. Fyi -- for the future. Bat swarms are immune to weapon damage. In addition, swarms do damage to anything they envelop -- they don't need to roll to hit. Lastly, bat swarms cause bleeding damage causeing the loss of 1hp per round unless healed. I just mention this as this would have likely made the fight shorter but not changed the result. Niqil is correct on the rewards(1200 xp/gp for winner, 400xp/gp for loser -- +80gp for Leif and 84 for Caspian for craft/profession work), the penalties for bringing allies are for non class allies like cohorts, war horses, etc. Class allies like familiars, psicrystals, and animal companions are part the the class which has them so do not inflict a penalty for use in the arena. |
| Huan12-05-05, 07:37 PM | ok on round 5 the spiritual weapon crits against my AC of 12...when i should have at least an AC of 16... in the spell hold person and in the actions taken i see no point in the fight where i end up prone... therefore that weapon does not confirm its crit... which would give me alot more hp back, and after raging for hp and with the +13 cure moderate wounds... i still have a chance at winning this fight ... not emphasizing for anger simply pointing out that i am not prone and therefore have an AC 16 AT LEAST... i might still have shield AC too since it doesnt say i dont get it... making it even 17....also i dont see ANY rolls for spiritual weapon attack or damage or crit damage on the rolls listed page... if you could please show those.... When you are Held, your condition is Helpless. When you are Helpless, your effective Dex is 0 (a -5 penalty). Your AC is thus (10 - 5 Dex + 1 Shield + 5 Armor +1 Deflection = 12). Here's some RAW for back up: Hold Person Spell: Hold Person Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting] Level: Brd 2, Clr 2, Sor/Wiz 3 Components: V, S, F/DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level) Target: One humanoid creature Duration: 1 round/level (D); see text Saving Throw: Will negates; see text Spell Resistance: Yes The subject becomes paralyzed and freezes in place. It is aware and breathes normally but cannot take any actions, even speech. Each round on its turn, the subject may attempt a new saving throw to end the effect. (This is a full-round action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.) A winged creature who is paralyzed cannot flap its wings and falls. A swimmer can’t swim and may drown. Arcane Focus: A small, straight piece of iron. And the 'Paralysis' status is defined as thus:Paralyzed: A paralyzed character is frozen in place and unable to move or act. A paralyzed character has effective Dexterity and Strength scores of 0 and is helpless, but can take purely mental actions. A winged creature flying in the air at the time that it becomes paralyzed cannot flap its wings and falls. A paralyzed swimmer can’t swim and may drown. A creature can move through a space occupied by a paralyzed creature—ally or not. Each square occupied by a paralyzed creature, however, counts as 2 squares. To look up the further implications of 'Helpless': Helpless: A helpless character is paralyzed, held, bound, sleeping, unconscious, or otherwise completely at an opponent’s mercy. A helpless target is treated as having a Dexterity of 0 (–5 modifier). Melee attacks against a helpless target get a +4 bonus (equivalent to attacking a prone target). Ranged attacks gets no special bonus against helpless targets. Rogues can sneak attack helpless targets. As a full-round action, an enemy can use a melee weapon to deliver a coup de grace to a helpless foe. An enemy can also use a bow or crossbow, provided he is adjacent to the target. The attacker automatically hits and scores a critical hit. (A rogue also gets her sneak attack damage bonus against a helpless foe when delivering a coup de grace.) If the defender survives, he must make a Fortitude save (DC 10 + damage dealt) or die. Delivering a coup de grace provokes attacks of opportunity. Creatures that are immune to critical hits do not take critical damage, nor do they need to make Fortitude saves to avoid being killed by a coup de grace. So you were not prone, just effectively prone. The fact that 2 back-to-back crits landed because of this did not help. I'm sorry, bud, but it was bad luck with that save (being neutral, he chose the bow to be his spiritual weapon, and thus it had a x3 crit. True, you could have raged even though your tactics said not to do so when the Ally was still alive, but it would not have stopped the massive killing damage endured anyway). Also, the rolls pages limits it to the last 20 rolls done. To see them all, click the link 'Older' towards the bottom of the page. (It's there, though.) |
| TheMagister12-05-05, 07:39 PM | Goran vs. Sdentch (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7926100&postcount=753) is up. A fight between two fairly evenly matches opponents without lots of tactical options could only be decided by the dice.... Dude. The fight was decided because you didn't tap Sdentch's tattoo of skate first round as I asked! There's no way that Goran can keep away from Sdentch when she moves 50' a round (which is equal to his speed!). The round that he runs away Sdentch would be able to pace him (even base him!) and harry him until he's forced to melee or 5' step to buff, which would be when she overruns him and smacks him around (or gets knocked down herself, which is possible). Even if you decide to ignore the tattoo in my tactics, I have a few other questions: 1) Round 7 you have the dissolving weapon acid damage doing 4d8. The dissolving weapon damage doesn't increase with size, and should remain 4d6. 2) Round 8 you have Goran's claws dealing 2d6 damage while he's large sized. By the SRD description of the power, he gains claws that deal 1d4 damage when he's medium sized. This would increase to 1d6 when he's expanded. That's about it, I guess. I would appreciate it if you re-ran the fight to include the skate tattoo, and recalculated the damage for Goran's dissolving weapon (4d6 instead of 4d8), and recalculated the damage on the claw crit and subsequent hit to be 2d6+14 and 1d6+7 respectively. You never know...if Sdentch is still standing after that last hit from Goran, she may full attack his butt and kill him! I really feel that the entire fight would change if that tattoo is tapped and Sdentch matches Goran's speed... TM |

| TelinArtho12-05-05, 11:51 PM | @Book5 - its tough to see where the errors might be - as the fight hasn't really been posted yet - but one glaring thing that I see: You can't start off in a "hiding" position. Meaning - if your opponent has LOS and you haven't acted yet - you are auto spotted. In other words - once Aquin moves a little - he'll see Varia. Also, make sure you add in the profession income of Aquin (at least - don't know about everyone else). [EDIT] Not sure if you noticed this, but a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds should be 2d8+3 not 2d8+2. |

| KerlanRayne12-06-05, 05:57 AM | Dude. The fight was decided because you didn't tap Sdentch's tattoo of skate first round as I asked! There's no way that Goran can keep away from Sdentch when she moves 50' a round (which is equal to his speed!).I also have a powerstone of Skate The round that he runs away Sdentch would be able to pace him (even base him!) and harry him until he's forced to melee or 5' step to buff, which would be when she overruns him and smacks him around (or gets knocked down herself, which is possible). Goran doesn't even know that power. KerlanRayne |
| lonewolf12-06-05, 07:19 AM | Rethun vs Karen (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7914404&postcount=744) is up. ALthough im fine with the fight as it is, I just wanted to note that you´ve made Karen something that isnt possible: If someone stands up from beeing prone and thus triggers an AoO, he is still considered prone and thus cannot be tripped again. That doesnt change anything in the fight, but I wanted to tell you in case it comes up in a fight in the future again. Thanks for pitlording! |
| Macbrea12-06-05, 08:16 AM | Hmm, I know it draws an attack of oppurtunity. I didn't realize it was before they stand up instead of after they did. I may have shortened the fight considerably as Rethun would have taken 2d4+4 damage in the 29th, 30th, 37th and 38th rounds. I will edit the fight as it might cost you one less stone of vigor. Edit: Yes, it did result in the use of one less stone of vigor as the fight ends on round 30. |
| Usurpator12-06-05, 08:23 AM | @Usurpator: My tactics were not contradictory. I wanted to take a shot at her with the bow and then get away to buff, one I was done buffing, then I would go into melee. I thought I said they were counterintuitive, not contradictory.... From what you say here I gather you meant something like: 'My primary goal is to melee after buffing, but since I have prebuffed dissolving weapon on my arrow, and prefer to use it before I prepare for melee.' I always try to distill goals from tactics given to me, since tactics rarely can be followed literally. If you can give me some idea for the reason behind a tactical choice, it would greatly aid me to run the fight. Also, my Expansion came from an augmented power stone. Goran doesn't even know that power. Understood. Could you please not from what source a manifestation comes in the future then so that I don't have to go back and forth between your tactics, the fight and your sheet to check what source it comes from? I would appreciate it. (I know I am guilty of not specifying sources properly myself at times, and often see Pitlord errors as result). What about the rage question? When did you want to rage? After or before dissolving weapon was used? Also, you might also have a powerstone of skate, but your tactics specify a particular contingency for when Sdentch closes: 'use withdraw or run as needed', nothing in there about a powerstone of skate.... |

| NiQil12-06-05, 10:20 AM | Silas and Sir Valken (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=7921485#post7921485) has been fixed. Ok...now yer really gonna hate me. I told you something that was incorrect, and is going to be cause for another revision. Fortunately, not a big one. But definitely fight affecting. A barbarian may prematurely end his rage. This means that I would be able to do as you did originally, which was prematurely end my rage to heal with the wand. What will need to happen is that, due to the extra damage I took....the rage is only going to last something like one or two rounds (i'll check and edit this post in a little while...of to work now), because if it goes longer, when I end my rage, I will drop unconscious before I can heal. But it can be done. And then the ranged portion of our fight would need to be readded, which is going to change the result again. |
| TelinArtho12-06-05, 10:30 AM | Niqil - I don't think you can do that, both because ending your rage prematurely isn't in your tactics, but more importantly because I don't think you have the action to do it: Round 17: Sir Valken attacks again (11+8 vs 20 4+3dmg Horse: 4,17,2 +4,+4,-1 3+3dmg) Silas rages and attacks. (19! 4+9 vs 14 not confirmed 7+4 dmg). Silas: 13/33 (-12,-17)[Rage 7] SirValken: 34/34 (7,1) Foreman: 1/22 Round 18: Valken attacks (15+8 vs 18 6+3dmg Horse:1!,14,19 +4,-1 2+1dmg) Silas attacks the horse (5+9 vs 14 2+9MC 4+4dmg 14+9 vs 15 no fall dmg) Silas: 1/33 (-12,-17)[Rage 6] SirValken: 34/34 (7,1) Foreman: -7/22 In round 17, I drop you to 5hp, so you rage - bringing your hp up to 13. In round 18, before you act, I hit you for 9 damage and Foreman hits for another 3 - reducing you to 1hp (while raging). If you end your rage now, you will fall into negatives. Also, in round 18, Foreman actually hits you with both a hoof and his bite - so there's an attack that should have done damage there that wasn't taken into account. |

| NiQil12-06-05, 11:06 AM | Niqil - I don't think you can do that, both because ending your rage prematurely isn't in your tactics, but more importantly because I don't think you have the action to do it: In round 17, I drop you to 5hp, so you rage - bringing your hp up to 13. After I typed the previous message, I was afraid that might be the case....I didn't have time to go back through the fight as I was getting ready for work. Ending a rage prematurely to heal shouldn't be something that is needed in tactics unless a character is extraordinarily stupid (low Int or Wis)....in this case, however, yer correct...I have no actions to do it before it would kill me. Fight stands....typo'd myself right to death. That 5 was intended to be a 10, but I didn't realize I made that error until the fight had been posted. What can ya do? LOL |
| TelinArtho12-06-05, 11:17 AM | Well, I don't know that I necessarily agree that ending a rage prematurely really makes sense - even to heal - if your tactic says to start raging when you get low on HP. For instance, let's say some tactics say - "Rage when I get down to 10hp, break rage if I am reduced to 5 or less so that I can heal" - but if you are reduced to 5 or less while raging, you are going to die when you end the rage. On the other hand, if the tactics were something like "Rage when I first get into melee. If I am reduced to 10hp or less (but more than 0 if I end my rage), end the rage and withdraw to heal" - I could understand that. As a pitlord though, unless you specifically stated to end your rage to heal - I would never do it. Ending your rage puts you at a disadvantage that, unless specifically mentioned, I would not put a character in. -------------------------- Anyway - nice fight. Foreman stands the winner again! 5th level here we come... |

I was speaking in general terms, such as a character who says rage as soon as I get into combat....and then 4 rounds into rage is getting hammered and needs to end it to use a wand to heal. That type of thing. |

| TelinArtho12-06-05, 12:42 PM | I'm making a ruling on this in my fight that I'm running - but for the sake of speed, I figured I'd address it here now: If you are bleeding from a wound (such as from a swarm) you take 1 point of damage each round until a cure spell or some other healing affects you. The question is: Do temporary hit points count as healing? My interpretation is No - because when the temp hp time is up - they go away. However, I don't see anything specifically addressing this situation in the rules - so I could see it going both ways. /d |
| Dracazar12-06-05, 12:48 PM | IMHO temporary hit points don't count as healing |

| KerlanRayne12-06-05, 02:15 PM | What about the rage question? When did you want to rage? After or before dissolving weapon was used?Sorry about that, please use this: "Only rage right before the charge." It's more difinitive. KerlanRayne |
| Sunwolf12-06-05, 02:20 PM | I'm all for an adjustment if it will save either side expendables. No reason to let an error cause someone to use more then they should have. @Ayrynthyn If you have the time go ahead and do the adjustment. If you don't have the time let the fight stand as it is. It might save Leif some money, but he still made a profit on this fight either way so no big deal. Once Caspian understands his situation, I don't think Caspian will be using any additional potions so the fight shouldn't cost Caspian any more either. |
| NiQil12-06-05, 02:24 PM | @Ayrynthyn If you have the time go ahead and do the adjustment. If you don't have the time let the fight stand as it is. It might save Leif some money, but he still made a profit on this fight either way so no big deal. Once Caspian understands his situation, I don't think Caspian will be using any additional potions so the fight shouldn't cost Caspian any more either. Although he might get mad and take a round to throw his greataxe at Leif in frustration LOL |
| Luni12-06-05, 02:47 PM | @Huan: The bat swarm should also eat Uday at the same time as Zubair. I dont' understand why I can't move in round 7. He doesn't threaten any area, I have total concealment from his horse. Also, I think Keois would move to a charging position. If needed Talari would use her FA to assure it. Edit: Also Wildshaping into Polar Bear form heals 12 hp, and improves her con scrore for more hp. I'd rather of went for a full out attack instead of healing anyways. I can't compete with his archery from my wand. |

| SoulLord12-06-05, 02:55 PM | Qucik Question: Does dealing damage wake up a creature that is put asleep from a brass dragons breath weapon? I see no reference to the brass dragon sleep effect being any different from the sleep spell so I would say yes. quoting the relevant part of the sleep spell. Sleeping creatures are helpless. Slapping or wounding awakens an affected creature, but normal noise does not. Awakening a creature is a standard action (an application of the aid another action). |
| Luni12-06-05, 03:03 PM | Sleep is mentioned under the helpless description, but it doesn't say that you can wake them up with damage. :) We'll jsut use common sense. Saffron vs Pale-Rider is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7934041&postcount=761) |
| Usurpator12-06-05, 03:05 PM | The rerun (from round 1) of Goran vs. Sdentch. I did not need to do any rerolling, as both opponents used exactly the same number of attacks as before, so all old rolls were used in order. |
| Ayrynthyn12-06-05, 03:08 PM | Although he might get mad and take a round to throw his greataxe at Leif in frustration LOL Fixed... i did opt to Rage you instead of use the potion. If you could have gotten near the rnd 31 end of Inivis i would have considered haveing you use the potion as expressed in your tactics. That wasnt the case so i didnt... should be good to go now. Let me know if there are any "new" issues :) |

His horse has scent and had you pinpointed, it COULD take the AoO (If you would have gotten cover from the pillar while you were moving, you could have moved without an AoO, but that was not present). I wondered if the Rhino would charge without ushering, but the description under Rhino says "When it is harassed or annoyed, a rhinoceros lowers its head and charges". Since it was defending, and was never actually attacked, I am halfway-not convinced it would. Also, charging is a full round action, and Zubair never stayed in one place long enough to be on the recieving end of a charge (a plain move + attack was better). The damage to Uday is a good point, but would not have dropped it. What is 'FA'? |

Let me know of any problems. /d |
| Huan12-06-05, 03:20 PM | Fa is free action. :) I don't think pinpointing a smell allows you to ignore concealment however... Ah, 'free action', thanks for that. Since your concealment was based off visual senses, and scent's pinpointing is not, then your invisibility means nothing to Scent. |

Let me know of any problems. /d Most of the start looks good. In general it looks quite good despite the pages of tactics you had to work with, thank you for picking it up! Round 6: Eddie eats some goodberries. This seems to be a good moment to cast Deja Vu as per my tactics. And, since he cannot eat them again next round, thus forcing him to fall. I can understand you overlooked the option, though. I'll leave it to you if you feel like it an issue that needs adjusting. Round 13+: The ready shield should give me total cover and thus negate produce flame as long as I am readying to ward against incoming attacks. No damage in those rounds. Lying down should not be neccessary yet. It is not advantageous since I can block produce flames with the shield. Round 18-19: Why isn't Flamehair standing up to fire the sling? Seems rather stupid to continue lying on the ground and receiving a to hit penalty, especially since Flamehair gets two rounds to do it. |

Seems rather stupid to continue lying on the ground and receiving a to hit penalty, especially since Flamehair gets two rounds to do it. The problem is - all of your powers are close range and Bastion was staying at a range of 60ft the entire fight (I could've made it farther according to Bastion's tactics - so this is more of a liberal help to you...) - so Deja Vu (25ft), and any of your enlarged effects (55ft) simply didn't have the reach to affect him. With regard to laying down, you mention this: Entangle: have mount move out while readying tower shield for total cover. Without mount start Ashur tactics (see Survive) So while it may not have helped you necessarily - it was in your tactics to do so... As to using the shield to block the flames - I guess I may be misunderstanding things here: if you are using the shield as a shield - it would not apply to your AC versus the flames; but if you use it as cover, it completely blocks them? Assuming I'm wrong here, then he casts Produce Flame and waits a few rounds to cast SNA and has the same end result. In round 19, it should read: Flamehair stands and fires the sling [4-2=2 vs AC17, miss] and drops to the ground. I just forgot the standing part. The extra -2 is for distance that wasn't applied in the original roll. |

As to using the shield to block the flames - I guess I may be misunderstanding things here: if you are using the shield as a shield - it would not apply to your AC versus the flames; but if you use it as cover, it completely blocks them? That is correct. Shield won't add to AC against his produce flame anyway, the only effective means of using it is for total cover. Since produce flame is not a targeted spell, it should protect me 100% from produce flame. That's the rules. Consider this, a cover bonus to AC helps against ranged touch attacks, if I turn my shield sideways, his attacks go through a corner and I would get +4 cover bonus to AC from the shield. If I turn it all the way towards him, it would give me total cover, but make me easier to hit? The rule might not be sensinble in all its aspects, but total cover protects completely from attacks. EDIT: Even if it might not affect the outcome, it reduces the number of charges spent from my Dorje of Vigor..... Assuming I'm wrong here, then he casts Produce Flame and waits a few rounds to cast SNA and has the same end result. I just forgot the standing part. The extra -2 is for distance that wasn't applied in the original roll. I saw you not adding that, but standing up also gives me extra AC vs. the Hippogriff, causing an attack to miss. Also, the Hippogriff cannot full attack just like that. It should first save vs. the entangle (since it can't hover, it must land after the charge or forego a full attack next round since it must keep forward movement). |

Well, the 110ft range I missed - but it is moot, since everything that Bastion could do, could be done just as easily at 120ft from you - like I said - this is an error on my part. He specifically said to stay out of range, and was amply able to - so this is a matter of semantics. Okay - it appears I did do the produce flame incorrectly - which will probably result in the reduction of expendables - so that will be edited in. With regard to the hippogriff - he can charge at a distance of greater than half-speed and still be aloft until the following round - so this it would not land until after it gets a full round attack against you and takes a 5ft step to land. Also, any time you fired a shot, you dropped back to the ground - so you would be prone when the hippogriff came. |

He specifically said to stay out of range, and was amply able to - so this is a matter of semantics. Not true, he specifically must and did close for the summon swarm. And it was the round following it that he retrieved (move action) and fed (standard action for both) the berries to Eddie. He couldn't summon a swarm from 120 ft. If he could Flamehair wouldn't have used up the Powerstone of Mind Thrust, since it also wouldn't be at the proper range. And if he can flee that far away, I have an extra round to get free of the entangle. I did think about these things when I made Mind Thrust my top countertactic..... Okay - it appears I did do the produce flame incorrectly - which will probably result in the reduction of expendables - so that will be edited in. Could you also edit in the Craft gold? With regard to the hippogriff - he can charge at a distance of greater than half-speed and still be aloft until the following round - so this it would not land until after it gets a full round attack against you and takes a 5ft step to land. Nope, it cannot land with a 5 ft. step, if it is flying, it would fall (even 5 ft.), since it has minimum forward movement. An animal intelligence Hippogriff would not get itself willingly in a situation where it would fall. Besides, now I think about it, charging must be done in a straight line to the closest square, if the Hippogriff started high in the air, it must (since it is the closest square) attack from a height of 10 ft., since it would reach the closest square at that point. So next round it cannot perform a full attack regardless. And it will also provoke.... |

So next round it cannot perform a full attack regardless. And it will also provoke.... Summon Swarm - well, his tactics state to move away to heal - so whilst Bastion draws the berries, Eddie moves away 80ft from the starting distance of 60ft - Bastion has already ceased concentration on the swarm after he summons them - so he can move away without worry. The craft money has always been in there - but consider it in there still... While the hippogriff is large, its reach is only 5ft. So picture this - a cross-section of the encounter with the hippogriff: H H . H H . . . F So it could take a 5ft step to the ground. If the issue is with it possibly being entangled, let's just resolve that right now and roll it so that it no longer matters: Reflex save for Hippogriff (1d20+5=14) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=307992) If this is the case, it still hits with one attack, missing with its bite (dealing 6 damage). Then Bastion throws the flame and deals 7 damage, knocking down Flamehair. |
| Macbrea12-06-05, 05:06 PM | Felan vs Mektos is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7935121&postcount=763) I have an inkling something is wrong though... Exp and gold is wrong for the fight for Mektos. There is no charge for exp or gold for animal companions or familiars. Therefore, it should be +900xp/+900gps +60gp from crafting. Sadly, Felan also only gets +300xp/+300gp for a fight against Mektos. |
| TelinArtho12-06-05, 05:19 PM | Exp and gold is wrong for the fight for Mektos. There is no charge for exp or gold for animal companions or familiars. Therefore, it should be +900xp/+900gps +60gp from crafting. Sadly, Felan also only gets +300xp/+300gp for a fight against Mektos. And Felan gets +66gp from crafting as well. There is an issue in round 4, but not enough to change the fight for (its actually worse for me...): I take a 5ft step, turn invisible and then move. I couldn't have taken the 5ft step and then moved - so it would've been move and turn invisible most likely (so that I don't have to deal with the AoO). In any case, the tactics of my opponent were superior to my own. Nicely done. |
| Usurpator12-06-05, 05:21 PM | @TelinArtho Thank you for the responses. I agree with most of them (and forgive me my stupid overlooking of the craft gold), so consider these issues resolved. The only question I have left after the edit is while Flamehair stands up, drops shiel, dorje and draws and loads the sling was she has zero chance to fire (round 19). That seems patently stupid and only sets myself up for a killing attack (which actually happens). My tactics clearly said, to prefer defense over offense, and only use the sling as last resort if Bastion still has resources left. If Flamehair has a zero chance of doing something offensive, why drop the defense? |

(I decided to take my digital disasters as an opportunity to experiment with a different format for the fight) I am not linking it in this post cause its not up yet, it should be rapidly. If you are not satisfied with the lack of hyperlinks (end round stat blocks) in the post that appeares shortly then fear not, as I will be editing them in over the next hour or so. :D Feedback regarding the format (as opposed to my standard format) would be appreciated. | TelinArtho12-06-05, 05:28 PM | Because of this: 5. Alternate between Survive and Disable/Kill Eddie tactics as appropriate. Priority should go to survive, but if there are good options for Disable/Kill Eddie, feel free to use them. Particular good opportunities are when Bastion is recalling a spell with his pearl or casting something like produce flame. While you did say the priority should go to survive - you also said a very specific moment when taking the offensive is - recalling a spell or casting a spell. Bastion was casting, so it seems to be reasonable that Flamehair would take that opportunity. |

While you did say the priority should go to survive - you also said a very specific moment when taking the offensive is - recalling a spell or casting a spell. Bastion was casting, so it seems to be reasonable that Flamehair would take that opportunity. That is true. But would you say that standing still with a loaded sling is a particular good option or opportunity to kill Eddie? I think you are taking my tactics somewhat too literally, but if you do, do it all the way. I think the intention behind my tactics are fairly clear, 'if I have a good opportunity to disable/kill Eddie I should take it'. This was not a good opportunity, I did not even get to attack.... Using the sling was the least preferred method, and the sling was not even fired here. I mean, Flamehair's life is on the line here, she has 16 Int and 12 Wis and can hardly by classified as mentally challenged, this is giving up a lot for no gain. |
| TelinArtho12-06-05, 05:51 PM | Well, you and I can disagree on this - but let's look at the situation - you are entangled and prone whilst being pegged by lightning and other sundry things. Personally, I think getting out of the entangle was best for you... however, that was going against your tactics. As to it being a good opportunity - I think it is - especially as defined by the tactics you stated (recalling a spell or casting a spell). By not having any sort of option other than that - you have to take a chance at some point. |
| Maraxus12-06-05, 06:14 PM | Imperi vs Noko is up. any complaints? Just one: She can't move her image and do another action in the same round. Concentrating is a standard actoin. Yes, I should write this in further tactics that include the image, that made problems the second time now. My only complain is, that Noko is female. (Imperi too, both are sometimes refered to as "he" and sometimes as "she") One minor point is, that you have to declare psionig fist before the attack and if you don't hit, it is wasted. So Imperi should have either tryed the fist on the attack in round 6 (or even before that), or she should have saved it for the first turn she starts in a grapple (to have maximum chance to not waste it. No need to change something, since I won. Just wanted to say that for the future. :) Whow, in the last fight, an owl wanted to grapple Noko, this time an eagle. Lot of nice birds. What will come next? (I tell you: a spiked gauntlet ;)) |

Er, yeah.. :shifty: While I regret your computer problems - I think it is very important to include two things in a fight: 1. The tactics. It seems as though you have had Aquin use two crossbows in the match and that definitely is not stated in the tactics - in fact quite the opposite... 2. Hard facts about the fight - including the die rolls. I care little if the numbers are linked, but I want to see them with the bonuses (either in the online roller, or the number from the roller modified in the fight post). Stories are great for the fights, but at the same time, I need something concrete on which to base arguments. I also posted about the rolls of the fight the other day - care to respond to it? |
| lonewolf12-06-05, 06:31 PM | My only complain is, that Noko is female. (Imperi too, both are sometimes refered to as "he" and sometimes as "she") Corrected that also. It was just that both of your characters had names that were neither clearly male nor female, and I had to correct myself often. But apperantly I missed my mistakes a few times. |

| TelinArtho12-06-05, 06:44 PM | @Book5 - its tough to see where the errors might be - as the fight hasn't really been posted yet - but one glaring thing that I see: You can't start off in a "hiding" position. This was my original post. |

Also, make sure you add in the profession income of Aquin (at least - don't know about everyone else). [EDIT] Not sure if you noticed this, but a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds should be 2d8+3 not 2d8+2. Will do, Tactics :mymy: Will add those now. [edit] I dont believe it is salient given the circumstance, but I will be certain to include the data correctly in the stats that I edit into the story. I just posted the fluff (there is a missing piece I already noticed - Dameon cast daylight (blinding Aquin), and I didnt refer to it directly) so I would be making progress. |
| TheMagister12-06-05, 06:51 PM | @Usurpator ...And why did you have her power attack in round 7? It's nice and everything, using her feats and all, but its not in my tactics. Also, those Claws of the Beast [i]aren't[i] augmented; check her tactics (which don't mention augmentation) and her PP usage, which don't reflect it (1 pp for Force Screen and 1 pp for Claws). Those claws should do 1d4 medium and 1d6 large. Sorry to keep harping on this, but if Sdentch loses, I want it to be clean. TM |
| Usurpator12-06-05, 07:05 PM | Man, I'm sorry about this. Round 5: "Goran nimbly avoids the raging Sdentch..." Sdentch has Improved Overrun. Goran cannot choose to avoid her. Sorry again, but there's method to the madness! TM Well, please, please, please mention that in your tactics next time. Goran is medium sized. Go for the raged overrun (only rage once he's within 50 ft...don't waste rounds). Suck up the AoO (he'll provoke one when/if he stands up, so I'll get that investment back). Hopefully he'll decide to stand and trade, in which case Sdentch will use TWF to chop him down. That particular word got me off on the wrong foot. Since it was directly referring to the Overrun, I interpreted it as Goran having a choice about the avoiding your Overrun..... It usually consumes too much time to check every fact when running a battle. Do they have that spell memorized, do they have the correct scroll, do they actually have the feat they declare to be using? In any case, I'll roll some dice now to see if you succeed, if you do, there is need for more editing: Sdentch Str check: [20!]+6 = 26 (sigh, bad karma....), Goran check [14]+4 = 18. Goran is prone.... |

TM You have power attack in your tactics, and I interpreted it as particulary applicable when Goran's AC drops, it was just not given 'exactly' at the time I applied it.... But I never run gladiators literally, I cannot for often their tactics are not literally applicable or sometimes plain stupid if I do so. This seemed like the thing to do for Sdentch at that time.... she is certainly an experienced enough fighter that she realized it was time for an all or nothing blow. If you hadn't mentioned power attack anywhere, I would not have used it, but that single mention was enough reason to give her the last chance and still feel I was playing according to the spirit of your tactics (and not the literal text). I haven't used any augmented claws in the second fight, they are doing 1d6, where do you see augmented ones? |

Do they have that spell memorized, do they have the correct scroll, do they actually have the feat they declare to be using? Umm...don't take this the wrong way...but isn't that a pitlords job? It's one thing to be fuzzy on details of various things....but all the things you mentioned are things I would think would be required of a pitlord to properly run a fight. In fact...that's the main reason I am not running fights right now....I just don't have the free time to dedicate in one block to sit down and run a fight anymore. |

It's one thing to be fuzzy on details of various things....but all the things you mentioned are things I would think would be required of a pitlord to properly run a fight. Not in my opinion. I am checking a lot during a fight, spells ranges, rules, damage output, modifiers, tactics, but I cannot check everything. I have to give it my best effort, and I am doing that each and every time. I'll have to do complete audits of both tactics and character sheets each time I Pitlord a fight to be sure of avoiding 'mistakes', and even then I might miss something or misremember a rule. I'll spot what I come across, but chances are that I will miss something. Sometimes it matters, more often than not it doesn't matter, and even more often nobody notices (when I look back at some of my own previous fights I often see minor errors that were never reported). Expect for Maven's fight there have been precious few error-free fights here. If you want me to point out all the apparent errors in the fights I spot, I will have to quit my day job to mention them all. |

Like I said....I don't want you to take this the wrong way. But the tone of your last post came across very much as "I'll run the fight with the basics and leave the details to others." I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but that is how it came across. As an aside.....we really need WotC to hook us up with voice chat or something here so things like this can be avoided LOL. |
| Luni12-06-05, 08:25 PM | Exp and gold is wrong for the fight for Mektos. There is no charge for exp or gold for animal companions or familiars. Therefore, it should be +900xp/+900gps +60gp from crafting. Sadly, Felan also only gets +300xp/+300gp for a fight against Mektos. OK. Not used to 2 allies. :) @Telin: I'll add the money too. Also, SoulLord wrote a story for Vandelar vs Krunch. handy lin here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7915614&postcount=746) |

If cover alone is worth a spot check, what exactly is the DC that I am rolling against? I am not satisfied with the fight in its current form because I cannot validate that tactics were followed, and it appears that tactics were blatantly ignored (though I cannot tell for sure on that matter without seeing the numbers in their entirety). If you do not have the time to edit the corrections again, I would prefer the fight to be run for a 3rd week to make sure enough time is given. |

| Vathelokai12-06-05, 11:20 PM | I'll think I'll use a size 7 font next time on the gender line, just to make sure there are no mistakes.... :) I started scaling up with Auburn... Once I got to size 4, pitlords started getting the gender right. |
| TheMagister12-06-05, 11:30 PM | Ah, 'free action', thanks for that. Since your concealment was based off visual senses, and scent's pinpointing is not, then your invisibility means nothing to Scent. Huan, scent is not blindsight. 'Pinpoint' means that you know what 5 ft. square they are in, it doesn't mean you can "smell" where their arms, legs, torso, and head are at any given moment. You just know that they are "right there!". Invisibility is indeed reduced in power around a character with the scent ability, but the total concealment is still very much in effect. And total concealment prevents AoOs. TM |
| TelinArtho12-06-05, 11:45 PM | Here's some issues with the fight that I can evaluate from the description of the fight and the rolls in invisible castle: In round 5, it is listed that Dameon charges - I presume with a dive. Aquin's AC minus his dex is 23, 25 if I've already drunk the potion (which is not clear in the description). Dameon rolled a 15, +5 with the weapon normally, +2 for the charge, +1 for attacking from higher ground, -1 for attacking with a buckler and presumably another +2 for being invisible, for a net of 24 vs my AC. From the description of the fight, it sounds as if I had drunk the potion: Each contestant has a buffing plan in mind. Aquin starts out fast with only a potion, but as his allies and enemies vanish from sight he has little capacity to detect them. Also, it is not clear which listen rolls go to what MS or casting (there are a couple of reasonable listen rolls for round 5 and possibly earlier if Dameon/Varia are casting), but if Aquin had heard anything, he should have activated his necklace of see invisibility: I'll use my see invisibility if I get an indication they are invisible. When Varia casts her fireball, I don't see a saving throw for Aquin to take half damage. |

But the tone of your last post came across very much as "I'll run the fight with the basics and leave the details to others." I'm sure you didn't mean it that way, but that is how it came across. What I meant was: 1. If you have favored enemy: dwarves and your opponent is a dwarf, it is probably good to mention it in your tactics, since it is easily overlooked. 2. If you have mentioned that you have favored enemy: dwarves in your tactics, I will assume you have it, and will not always verify it in your sheet. |
| TheMagister12-07-05, 04:00 AM | @Usurpator How's the Sdentch v. Goran fight coming? TM |
| Usurpator12-07-05, 04:26 AM | Currently not, have to go to work in just a minute, work for 8 hours, eat, do some chores and the address the fight. Adressing the fight will get priority over readying my characters for next week, so don't worry. |

Adressing the fight will get priority over readying my characters for next week, so don't worry. Not really worried. I've updated Sdentch's character sheet with a loss so she can compete next week, and she wouldn't level even with a win, I don't think. Have a good day at work...I'm going home in about 2 hours (from work) and get some sleep. TM |
| Vathelokai12-07-05, 06:56 AM | Hey guys, First off sorry for the serious delays .... RL is so busy right now, i even have trouble finding time to sleep. And it looks like it will continue that way for some time to come. Just got this from ToK. Looks like Auburn vs. Boraxx will go into week 2. |
| Pitlords12-07-05, 08:06 AM | not if there's a quick takeover. Any volunteers? Boraxx (Pittbull) vs Auburn (Vathelokai): Tellish of Ket [Late] |
| Dracazar12-07-05, 08:18 AM | I can take it, send me tactics |
| Ribking12-07-05, 08:29 AM | @Maraxus In Greefe vs. Raskos (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7909058&postcount=742), I think Greefe's xp/gp is wrong. It's listed as 350xp/350gp for an ECL5 fight. Shouldn't it be 500xp/533gp? |
| Vathelokai12-07-05, 08:32 AM | I can take it, send me tactics I still have mine, but I don't know about Pitbull. Sending them now. |
| Pittbull12-07-05, 09:49 AM | Hey thanks a lot! I sent mine too. |
| Maraxus12-07-05, 10:03 AM | @Maraxus In Greefe vs. Raskos (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7909058&postcount=742), I think Greefe's xp/gp is wrong. It's listed as 350xp/350gp for an ECL5 fight. Shouldn't it be 500xp/533gp? Correct. Thanks for pointing it out. Edited. |
| Usurpator12-07-05, 02:09 PM | And another incarnation of Goran vs. Sdentch is up. As before, while the fight changed, the results didn't change (not much). Only made extra rolls for the opposed Str checks... @KerlanRayne: Goran didn't use his powerstone of expansion. |
| Huan12-07-05, 02:36 PM | @The Magister The Scent thing is noted. However, it wouls not have made a difference. With Zubair's greater speed, his next single shot was more than enough to kill Talari, much less all three. Keeping tactics in mind, if Talari stayed and cured, she died. If she moved and cured, she died. The only gamble to MAYBE kill Zubair was cast one of her high damaging spells and hope for the best, but, again, that would be a sharp deviation of tactics. |
| Dracazar12-07-05, 02:39 PM | Boraxx (Pittbull) vs Auburn (Vathelokai): Dracazar [ECL5] is up I hope it is error free, I did my best is so few time. I'll read comments as soon as I come back... |
| Pittbull12-07-05, 02:51 PM | Didn't checked for errors, but thanks anyway. Boraxx accepts the loss. Thanks a lot for running the fight. |
| TelinArtho12-07-05, 03:20 PM | I realize this might not be the most popular of opinions, but @Iced, Sindorin, Huan regarding the team fight - I would like to propose for it to be rerun next week as the fight as it is not in a format that is "readable" according to the rules - and therefore can't be logistically verified. Keep tactics the way they are posted and just have the fight rerun. As far as I can tell, nothing in Aquin's initial tactics were used: 1. Wait to use the Potion of Shield of Faith until sight or sound of the opponent. 2. Use one crossbow, not two. Beyond that, I've voiced several items that haven't yet been addressed and that can't be verified in the fight's current format. If this is acceptable to you, please send a PM to Pitlords to have the match extended for a third week. thanks /d |

The fight SHOULD be quickly laid out orderly with the real rumbers posted round by round so it can be better analyzed and argued for legality... but it should not be rerun (just yet, anyways). |
| NiQil12-07-05, 04:01 PM | Telin's request is to rerun on grounds of illegibilty, and this I do not support. The fight SHOULD be laid out orderly with the real rumbers posted round by round so it can be better analyzed... but it should not be rerun (just yet, anyways). I think the reasoning behind Telin's request for a rerun is that it is already past deadline for this week, and there is little to no chance of having the fight resolved anytime soon. The fact that the fight was not posted in a proper format, but rather in story format (I have not looked at it, so I am only using what others have said), lends to the lack of credibility for anything the story indicates, since it cannot be properly verified. As an outside observer to the fight, I would have to agree with Telin's request....even though the fight has already been run....without a proper fight having been posted, I think that is the only fair way to do it. It's not fair to any of the combatants (whether they are on the winning or losing team), since there is no way they can justify or dispute anything. |
| Book512-07-05, 09:28 PM | ok, the fight should look better now. I guess we have the rest of the thread to ourselves eh? @all apologies for the late fight! [edit] |
