Fights of the Week: November 8th

Sheets
Deadline for editing characters sheets is 21:00 CET.
Central European Time (http://wwp.centraleuropeantime.eu/) shows the time.
Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match.

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions part 1 and part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM Caterane will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Make sure that your character is not in Prison (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=571107&goto=lastpost).

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need, there is a nice Template ready to use that will help.
You could find very useful the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps, You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
Other useful links are Skills and Feats, Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.
If a fight needs to be rerun, the Pitlord has to inform the Pitlords account. He cannot react to requests from Players because the other player and the pitlord might disagree. He has no time to read the fight and the discussion. Please keep that in mind. PMs from players with rerun requests won't have an impact.

Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, don't attack pitlords.
Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play and above all, have FUN!

If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius!

@Zevox and Vath - get me tactics ASAP. Looks like it will be on the arena map and obviously we need to get things resolved as soon as possible.

@Sauro - I'll send Jar-red's tactics along once I get an answer from Cat about Poe's used expendables from the first fight.
Caterane

Who's Zevox' Questlord?

In case anyone didn't know - the time for the deadline has come and gone. If you're still editing your character for this week... well - you're late.
Vathelokai

11-08-06, 04:14 PM
Writing tactics for Antalya vs Minderal as you read this. Should be done by 3:40 CST
Vathelokai

11-08-06, 04:26 PM
Tactics for uncon runner up battle sent. If you don't hear from zevox, there is a possibility you could run my half first and see if Minderel even has a chance.
TelinArtho

11-08-06, 04:29 PM
Well, Zevox is usually pretty prompt with his tactics - so I'll be a little more patient than that...
Zevox

11-08-06, 04:34 PM
Speaking of which, that should be in your PM box now Telin.

And I think you're overestimating your chances there Vath ;) . The first round will be key, but even if it goes your way Mindrel has a more than reasonable chance. Unless you're pulling something way out of left field, of course.

Zevox
Vathelokai

11-08-06, 04:35 PM
Shoot! I was hoping for the easy win. :P

Left field is my specialty! This one will be quick, but yes, first round is key. Lucky me and my mad dex bonus.
TelinArtho

11-08-06, 04:36 PM
Yup - received. Good luck to you both. I might even have the time to run it now... we'll see and no promises though.
TelinArtho

11-08-06, 05:35 PM
UnCon Antalya the Dolphin-Maid (Vathelokai) vs Mindrel Starmaster (Zevox)

As expected - a quick run. I have to say - I like both of these builds and am very curious on how well they'll do in the general populace - good luck to both of you in the future.

[EDIT] Oh and Cat - since I'm done with this one - go ahead and assign me another fight if you need a pitlord.

PAIRINGS DONE

+6: Vath, Cat
+4: Sauro
+3: McJarvis, Uther
+2: Krytos, TM, MWB, Zevox
+1: Abyssal, DSugui, DTF, Gonbow, Hiruma, hogarth, Kaigan, Macbrea, Maraxus, Telin, Zelck, Niqil

Only 2 Pitlords left-over. Doesn't encourage to lift the State of Emergency.

@Macbrea/Zevox/DSugui: Little Experiment. Pitlord sends the monster info to the team player who writes tactics for it. It's actually the same mechanic as an Escort+Guardian Operation.
Macbrea

11-08-06, 06:11 PM
Hmm, this should be an odd fight. So, Zevox any chance I get to know who my partner is before stepping into the arena against Little Daisy?
Gonbow

11-08-06, 06:35 PM
@Caterane
So I'll run my (Rusty Ryan (UserNamer) vs. Unknown Monster : Gonbow [Temple]) monster fight normally doing the tactics for the monsters myself, yes? Just double-checking.
Macbrea

11-08-06, 06:38 PM
yup, you roll up monster, if it gets gear you buy it gear (preferably before looking at your opponent) then write figure out it's tactics for dealing with the character

@hogarth: Tactics for the big, landbound lug against the annoying pixie have been sent. I hope for your sake that Maraxus comes up with something stunningly brilliant, or else this could be a very, very long fight. (Of course, I hope for my sake that he doesn't, but meh.)

Edit: Supplement sent, too.

Trees? What trees?

Oh you mean the 'unattended objects' that will be temporarially removed from the map by a kineticist with lots of PP to spend? Yes, I suppose ^_^

@UserNamer: Your setup is here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10599332&postcount=219), best of luck.

Hi guys, sorry it's been such a long absence. A lot of things hit me harder than I expected, it was all I could do to keep up with my previous responsibilities, and my pbp's.

But I am officially Withdrawing from the CoCo. I may come back in the future but cannot handle the time it takes to sort through all the nitty gritty rules, it drains all the fun from me. I want to thank you all though as my short time here has clarified some rules for me that help me enjoy my other games more.

I am also withdrawing Kyst Depthice.

Blech, damn grapples. I hate that mechanic. I kinda expected that (well, with the Pegasus anyway, I didn't think Antayla would try it too), but its still annoying... oh well. Oh, but btw Telin, Mindrel is male. And we don't get or lose anything for the UnCon fights.

@ Anyone - Did we have a new ECL 6 monster chart made yet? I thought someone had done it, but its not been put into the Rules thread if so, and I can't find it in the Council...

Yeah; I kept thinking that if I just went for full attacks, you could just take the 5 ft back and cast hold person. Had to use something to stop you from casting, and that was all that was handy.

I hope nobody ever has too fight 2 real stealthy characters out in the city, my moster and my fighter are both only a bit stealth and it allready took long till they got to buisness. But finally round 9 first attacks are exchanged. :)

To bad it got quite late now, I'll finish it tomorrow or Saturday. Maybe one could say, if you like my NPC-monster. :)

... hum, about the details given about monsters: I think, I was okay this time. I really considered writing something like "A small humanoid that reminds you of your 3rd fight, through still a bit diffrent in an unspecifieable way."
I guess such would not have been allowed, would it? ;)

Tatyanna vs 3 Janni in a forest can be found here.

Is only a short trip back from the plane of fire for her.

Interesting tactic, however the casting of planeshift (The touching to discharge the spell is part of the casting, it is not a charge-holding spell to allow him to cast, five-step closer, then attack next turn) will provoke an AoO as Tatyana is always threatening with her armor spikes.

Additionally, flying movement costs double in the forest map, giving them a movement of 6-squares maximum (running at a speed of 20' when things either cost double or quad; since you cant turn while running... would have it even slower) are you sure they could have reached me that quickly? Especially as it is further shortened by needing to move diagonally.

I only moved in 6 square movements from turn 6 onward with any of them. They moved in straight lines.

As planeshift may be cast on any person touched. He cast the spell and touched Tatyanna. As per the rules. He did take a 5ft step after casting the spell but before touching.

You can take a 5-foot step before, during, or after your other actions in the round.

Sorry, figured it was the tactics a race of people that are prone to flee from combat might take. It causes the least amount of death and gives them a remote chance against Tatyanna. Oddly, They rolled two 20s on saves vs tatyana's blasts. Sometimes you have to wonder about that crazy die roller.

Thanks for running, Vath. Only a miracle could win this one for me, so don't worry about this "short version". I have no complaints about it.
Zelck

11-10-06, 10:32 AM
@Vath: I'm fine with the fight. I'll make a post in Elders about the sniping thing; Telekinesis's Violent Thrust option mimics a ranged attack, and other pitlords have allowed it as a snipe. Note that ranged touch spells aren't weapons, but are considered ranged attacks. I can summon animals inside a wall because they're ethereal (not affected by the out of arena penalty since they're just an ally). As for Flyby Attack, using it like you recommended would leave me vulnerable to a readied action since I can't hide while doing it. I have other plans for it... :evillaugh

@Ravashack: Last chance to get in any corrections for your tactics...
Macbrea

11-10-06, 10:52 AM
@Vath: I can summon animals inside a wall because they're ethereal (not affected by the out of arena penalty since they're just an ally).

You are not able to summons a creature inside a wall because you lack line of effect to the spot your summoning to. And therefore you are unable to target the spot at which the spell will arrive.
hogarth

11-10-06, 10:55 AM

It's not targetting a spell, it's throwing a fuzzy ball. You can throw an object to a place you can't see, n'est-ce pas?
Macbrea

11-10-06, 11:08 AM
I would have to disagree with that. Nowhere in it's description does it say the fuzzy ball is ethereal. By the description of the item it produces a small fuzzy ball that can be thrown. Upon reaching its destination it turns into an animal. Throwing a fuzzy ball at a wall causes the animal to form in the square prior to the solid wall.
hogarth

11-10-06, 11:14 AM
I would have to disagree with that. Nowhere in it's description does it say the fuzzy ball is ethereal.
It specifically states so in the Rules of Gladius, however.
Ghostly equipment stays ethereal and produces ethereal effects. For example, an ethereal bag of tricks or figurine of wondrous power produces ethereal creatures.
Macbrea

11-10-06, 11:19 AM
Errr, didn't realize you where talking about the ghost summoning the animal inside the wall. I thought you were talking about the opponent of the ghost tossing a pet inside the wall with the ghost.

One noticable thinks: Loooooots of movement. Round about 2000 ft were move by all combatants together.

Query:

In a team fight with a monster, how is the rewards for the team with the monster done? I'm not sure if Izumi should be getting half rewards for her ally, or more (since her ally was just CR 3).

Zevox
MindWandererB

11-10-06, 03:04 PM
That's a darn good question. Technically, I think she still just gets half. Of course, if she loses (probable), then there's the reward cap that will probably get in the way anyway.
Zevox

11-10-06, 03:10 PM
Ah yes, reward cap. That solves that then.

So, Little Daisy vs Izumi and Giant Wasp is up. Went as everyone expected I think.

Zevox
Maraxus

11-10-06, 03:11 PM
Wow, ECL 8 vs ECL 6+3= 6,66. Izumi definitly has a tough job here.

Good question, if it was a normal ally, it would make a 18.75% penalty. But with this ruling, a monster of your own level would make strange penalties based on your level and I think this should be more like 50% all the time. Maybe say, that the XP is divided proportional to the level (this sounds like it could be a real rule). So a Level 6 with a level 3 Monster would get 6/(6+3) = 66.6% ... Hm, hopefully someone comes with a clue about this.
Zelck

11-10-06, 03:28 PM
@Ravashack: Last chance to get in any corrections for your tactics...
Actually, I might not be able to run it until Monday evening. Got a test to study for...
Macbrea

11-10-06, 04:25 PM
I am pretty sure that was correct in the rewards. If a 3rd and 6th level character fought an 8th level character and won.

6th would get 3600/2 = 1800 xp
3rd would get 5400/2 = 2700 xp

Because, Izumi lost she gets 1/3 of that amount or 600 xp.

With 600 x 1.11 = 666 gp

What was originally rolled would have actually been a much worse fight.

1d6+5 Troglodytes and 1d3 monitor lizards [CR1 & CR2]

Assuming maximum:
Izumi = 3600/15 = 240xp/3 = 80xp , 88 gp
Zevox

11-10-06, 04:39 PM
The question is more if the rewards are adjusted based on the number of allies you have, or thier CR/EL. If the former, you're right, fights with many monsters for allies would suck for the player. If the latter, well, it'd be nice to know how to calculate that.

In any event, the latter could only raise your rewards, but since the cap is 100 xp/level for a loss it wouldn't change it anyway, so the rewards are definitely right in this case.

Zevox
TelinArtho

11-10-06, 04:46 PM
Its too bad that the fight composition wasn't questioned more before the fight was run - I certainly didn't notice it. But given the guidelines for an interleague fight, Izumi should have been paired with an ECL6 monster - however it is not clear if that monster should be based on EL or CR at that point. Regardless, the CR3 monster is probably a little too weak on its own to be paired.

The problem is that I still had to roll it normally. Well, as luck happens, the first one I rolled fell under the "no auto-loss" clause (a bunch of trogs and lizards that had no chance of catching, much less hitting/hurting, Daisy), and when I rolled the second one I got low enough to roll on the EL 5 table (since we don't yet have an official redesigned EL 6 table in the rules), and got 1d3 Giant Wasps, and rolled a 1 on the 1d3. Since that could have been useful though I couldn't just scrap it, so, here we are.

I know how monster rolls can be frustrating. I still remember Daisy and Dronnar vs that acursed Vrock...

It was a nice fight, though.

@Maraxus: Unbealivable. Valek the unlucky, passing that will save was amazing. Curious how he won doing what he does best: running...

Rusty Ryan vs 2 Dire Bats is up here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10599332&postcount=219).

Heavy sheet errors put Rusty at a disadvantage going into this, but luck and a mild willingness on his Pitlord's part to improvise kept him alive.

Of course it does ... Well, the two keys are so close to another or something. ;) Fixed.

What I fear is, how a psion would make this with the 1/3 rule. In the end, he decided to lose, because he ran out of power points and you had to to many HP for his X-bow left. Even with 1 level more (being a Blue is the totally most useless way to waste 1 LA or 1 CR) there would be no change with a 1/3 rule. - But that was your speed adantage, taking these Constructs in melee could have been hard for ever everyone. 1d6+7 damage is heavy.

After this fight, I so wanted to build a Wilder-Construct-Shaper. Wild Surge would really be better for that part then Overchannel. But since the level of an expended knowledge power needs to be lower then the best you can cast and the Wilder still sticks to Level 1 Powers at Level 3, that concept would need level 6 (Or Wilder4/Psion1, which would make no sense at all). Bummer. :(

Hey...Kilpquabjeg's psicrystal and horse are just sitting on top of and beneath her (respectively). How is that complicated to figure out? ;)

At least you don't have everyone's least favourite type of fight -- the puny damage sniper vs. the guy with Deflect Arrows and a wand of Cure Light Wounds. There are two of those this week! (Noko vs. Sunstroke as well as Axhind vs. Petr Semchuk)

Toron Tactics
Here goes.

Start in front corner of box, use rock for cover and hide.

Rounds 1-3: Apply Drow Poison to three arrows.
Round 4: Move out of the box toward the center obstacle and shoot at Matthis if i see him.
Round 5+: If I can't possibly base Matthis in this particular turn then shoot a poisoned arrow and move to a position where it could be possible the following turn. I want to close and grapple if possible.

- If Matthis has mirror image up then close eyes and attack into his square to improve my chances of hitting.
- If blinded move behind obstacles and through them to make Matthis move around and allow me to use listen to try and find him. I want to have my bow out and shoot normal arrows in this case.
- If at any point i can grapple him do so.
- If he fails the save vs a sleep arrow get to him as soon as possible and CDG with unarmed strike.
- Remember that if i am aware of incoming crossbow bolts i can deflect them.

Tactics for Matthis II
Toron Brightstar (Iced) vs. Matthis Dar'ath II (waywreth) : DTFarstar [Arena]

It seems that Iced built a very powerful character for the low levels. Ah well, I don't see Matthis winning this, but maybe he'll get lucky.

Start by casting mirror image from the scroll. Try casting Blindness/deafness from memory. If that lands, withdraw and shooting him with the crossbow. Now I know he has deflect arrows, but when blind you are flatfooted, which means you can't deflect anything. Take a round to recall Expeditious Retreat to memory using pearl.

If blindness fails - Follow it up with Ray of Enfeeblement from a scroll then, Touch of Fatigue from memory. Stay away and shoot bolts at him, I have 27. If he makes the save, the fight is pretty much over.

Thanks for pitlording.

If someone wants it, great, if not I'll try and get back here on Tuesday night to run it.

Dissapointing nonetheless. Congrats Hirumajoe.

Essentially you bolted for the only opening to that little courtyard you guys were in, then Valen followed you. He successfully based you, so you could 5ft backstep & rapid shot. Then he moved closer to you & your back was against a wall, and because of his size you couldn't five step to the side to get away. Thus you dropped your bow & drew your sword.

Nothing too interesting after that-> just hack and slash back and forth. If he hadn't been mounted you would have stood a much better chance, but his speed was double yours. That's hard to compete with.

It's not invulnerable, afterall...thought there may not be much of a chance of getting through the hardness, any critical has the potential to do so.

Well - constructs (such as Psicrystals) are not subject to critical hits - so that's not really true.

@Sauro - I appreciate it - I just get nervous - especially with Cat already coming forward at the end of last week saying that he needed a result ASAP due to pressure from the Wiz_o's. Good luck in running the fight. I'm hoping it'll be nice and quick... and be punctuated with a goblin's spine in Jar-red's mouth...

It is ironic that the big prize of uncon here was the characters themselves. I feel like all four finalists probably didn't care that much about the custom board avatar and whatnot ;)

I'm looking forward to the "prestige" of the title - Uncon winner, but the character himself was definitely the big bonus of the contest.

I want to see Poe's tactics. When I was writing things up I just couldn't see a possibility of dealing enough damage to take Jar-red down without relying on spells that would reveal your position and limit your range by a good amount.

In any case- time for some sleep - good luck to you. Looking at the rolls - Jar-red has already heard you :)

Perius vs. 3x Celestial Otyughs (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10610383&postcount=224) is up. It was closer than it probably should have been.

You also forgot that the Energy Wall is Opaque. The Otyughs can't see through it and have no means of pinpointing his exact spot (just his square), so Perius has Total Concealment. No AOOs. And people have been emphasizing that Scent doesn't negate Total Concealment :) Also, the Fire Wall can't burn Perius unless he actually steps into it, because he has it radiating outward and unless I'm reading it wrong, he isn't moved from his spot in the center.OK, I see where he got grappled. That peach text is hard to notice at first glance with sleepy eyes.

And the fact that the Energy Wall is opaque and thus blocking line of sight (but not line of effect, because it isn't even solid) should make the reason for taking out Touchsight a LOT clearer, so to speak.

Also, to clarify, I don't have a 3.5 DMG. I'm literally flying blind on what I am fighting, so I was going basically on how many opponents there were.
