| waywreth10-11-06, 12:34 PM | Fights of the Week: October 11th Sheets Deadline for editing characters sheets is 21:00 CET. Central European Time (http://wwp.centraleuropeantime.eu/) shows the time. Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match. Rules of Gladius All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius. It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions part 1 and part 2. Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders. Pairings GM Caterane will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline. Make sure that your character is not in Prison (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=571107&goto=lastpost). Pitlording You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight. If you need, there is a nice Template ready to use that will help. You could find very useful the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps, You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete. Other useful links are Skills and Feats, Quick Access tables for XP and Gold. Recent News and Developments Skill Package Activities: Skill Packages are a combination of two or more skills or abilities that can be used in conjunction with a Free Activity to perform certain activities, many of them affecting your fight in a beneficial way. In order to use them, you must fulfill the skill requirements and pass the "Task" (mentioned in the entry) to benefit from the "Effect". As with all Free Activities, this must go into the title line of your sheet along with your ready status. Comments & Concerns Post any comments or concerns for this weeks fights in this thread. Be kind and courteous to your fellow posters, don't attack pitlords. Please remember that they do hard work and consume a lot of time to let you play and above all, have FUN! If you have questions or comments on any of the changes, please make your posts be heard in the Council of Gladius! |
| hogarth10-11-06, 12:41 PM | Re: Skill Packages Note that no traps have been officially approved by Caterane yet, so no one has to worry about getting KO'd by the "Set Trap" package before battle this week. |
| Highfire10-11-06, 12:59 PM | To those that I will be pitlording. I encourage, and will run fights in a seperate thread with both of you posting. Send me tactics ASAP, I will run the fight as soon as I receive tactics from both parties. ~Justin |
| Pitlords10-11-06, 01:56 PM | To those that I will be pitlording. I encourage, and will run fights in a seperate thread with both of you posting. Send me tactics ASAP, I will run the fight as soon as I receive tactics from both parties. With regard to a possible prune in the future, sheets and results of seperate thread fights must go to the Battles of Gladius thread once the fight is complete. Players should link this post, not the seperate thread. |
| Zelck10-11-06, 02:01 PM | To those that I will be pitlording. I encourage, and will run fights in a seperate thread with both of you posting. Send me tactics ASAP, I will run the fight as soon as I receive tactics from both parties. I personally prefer to send tactics and have the PL run the fight instead of doing it in a seperate thread, but I'd be OK if you want to do it as a separate thread. |
| hogarth10-11-06, 02:05 PM | I personally prefer to send tactics and have the PL run the fight instead of doing it in a seperate thread, but I'd be OK if you want to do it as a separate thread. I also prefer a pitlord-only fight, if only due to the fact that some fights can be quite long (30+ rounds) and it's unlikely that all players in a given battle will have the opportunity to post 6+ times per day. |
| Gonbow10-11-06, 02:14 PM | I also prefer a pitlord-only fight, if only due to the fact that some fights can be quite long (30+ rounds) and it's unlikely that all players in a given battle will have the opportunity to post 6+ times per day. Not every exact move has to be posted by the players; it's very feasible for a player to post their next three rounds of actions (or general activities therein) or even PM said things to the PL and have him resolve up until a point where he feels like he needs more input. Plenty of times when I was PL, I wished people were allowed to send in extra tactics to deal with lengthy situations that they hadn't accounted for at all in their initial PMs. (Like an opponent running away) |
| hogarth10-11-06, 02:23 PM | Not every exact move has to be posted by the players; it's very feasible for a player to post their next three rounds of actions (or general activities therein) or even PM said things to the PL and have him resolve up until a point where he feels like he needs more input. Plenty of times when I was PL, I wished people were allowed to send in extra tactics to deal with lengthy situations that they hadn't accounted for at all in their initial PMs. (Like an opponent running away) Don't get me wrong -- in an ideal world I'd probably find a "separate thread" battle preferable; I've had my tactics break down before and it's annoying (of course). My concern is this: a pitlord-only fight relies on one person posting promptly and not getting bogged down with real life, but a "separate thread" fight relies on three (or 4, or 5!) players' availability. Maybe I'm "painting the devil on the wall" (as someone might say :)) but I've seen more miniquests finished at the last minute than ahead of schedule. |
| Macbrea10-11-06, 02:26 PM | Oddly, a seperate thread fight can sometimes be faster then waiting on a pitlord to run a fight. Assuming that the players are just having fun and not being horridly competitive. Example: Lord Frost's Fight vs Sola! ECL 5 - Loss vs Sola; Stormwind During this fight we ahd to take breaks for the pitlord to keep up with the fight. The entire time we were communicating by IM waiting on Stormwind to post the between round fight logs. It is also the reason we sometimes did 3 rounds before end of round activites were posted. |
| McJarvis10-11-06, 02:49 PM | Some players count on breakdowns in opponents tactics ;) That wouldn't be nearly as effective if we didn't run CoCo in a battle-bots esque fashion. |
| Highfire10-11-06, 03:03 PM | I pity those players then, as that is not really a battle just who can outplan who. It takes away from the wonder of arena combat between two people. Alienating the characters of both and just focusing on the stats and who can think the farthest ahead. It is neither realistic nor somehting to be proud of. But in the spirit of competition it unfortunatly happens. ~Justin |

But in the spirit of competition it unfortunatly happens. ~Justin Bah, writing tactics is the most enjoyable part of playing in my opinion. 'Tis nothing wrong with the way the fights are done now. Of course, I imagine being able to adapt tactics during a seperate thread fight would be even more fun - adds another layer to the planning if you get the chance to come up with new contingencies when something totally unexpected happens :plotting: . Incidentally, I'd be glad to do a seperate thread fight if you happen to get the one arena-active character I have this week. Not likely if you asked to stick with low-level ones, since shes ECL 8, but its an option. Zevox |
| McJarvis10-11-06, 03:28 PM | I pity those players then, as that is not really a battle just who can outplan who. That's all it(character development) is anyway, since when you develop your character you are essentially planning for unforseen opponents. |
| Jerrick_QueKiri10-11-06, 03:59 PM | I always have trouble converting CET to Central Time in the US. Could someone tell me the deadline for Central Time? |
| Erithmu10-11-06, 04:00 PM | CET = Roughly 2pm |
| Jerrick_QueKiri10-11-06, 04:04 PM | Dang, so the deadline's passed then, right? |
| Pittbull10-11-06, 04:05 PM | Jep! It has passed! |
| McJarvis10-11-06, 06:04 PM | @Zelk, Dr. Funk, & bgt- I'm planning on doing the fight as soon as I get tactics from each of you. I unlocked all the songs on DDR: Supernova, so no excuses this week ;) |
| Erithmu10-11-06, 06:06 PM | @Sauro: I know that highfire had you down for doing Kyst's MQ, do you want to do it and I'll run the ECL3 team fight, or vice versa? |
| Pitlords10-11-06, 06:13 PM | PAIRINGS DONE +6: Cat +5: Vath +4: Highfire +3: Zelck, Storm, Sauro, Uther +2: Mcjarivs, Magister, Zevox +1: Abyssal, Rith, FalseK, Hirumajoe, hogarth, jerrick, lonewolf, Macbrea, Pittbull, MWB, niqil -1: DrFunk -2: Telin |
| Jerrick_QueKiri10-11-06, 06:15 PM | @ Iced and Hirumajoe: I will try to begin your fight Thursday night. However, it most likely won't be up until Sunday night or Monday afternoon, as I'm going out of town Friday. |
| McJarvis10-11-06, 06:16 PM | PAIRINGS DONE +6: Cat +5: Vath +4: Highfire +3: Zelck, Storm, Sauro, Uther +2: Mcjarivs, Magister, Zevox +1: Abyssal, Rith, FalseK, Hirumajoe, hogarth, jerrick, lonewolf, Macbrea, Pittbull, MWB, niqil -1: DrFunk -2: Telin As always, we appreciate the work you do for CoCo SO much cat. We luv you:) |
| Zelck10-11-06, 06:25 PM | @c00lz3: What are you miniquesting for? @bgt, Dr. Funk: Thank goodness I bought that Potion of Invisibility, or I'd be the only one who can't go invisible in this FFA. That would have been... painful... |
| SauroGrenom10-11-06, 06:35 PM | @Sauro: I know that highfire had you down for doing Kyst's MQ, do you want to do it and I'll run the ECL3 team fight, or vice versa? Yea I'll do the MQ. I asked Pitlords to take my name off the list for running a fight this week due to midterms comming up. I find MQ's to be far easier than arena fights. So I think I can manage the MQ. |
| Erithmu10-11-06, 06:38 PM | Kon (NedTheDestroyer) & Durin (Maraxus) vs. Carandol (Etiquette_Gnome) & Zax Kar (TelinArtho) These tactics come to me ASAP!! Dsugui if you poke your head in can you forward them along. |
| McJarvis10-11-06, 06:52 PM | These tactics come to me ASAP!! Dsugui if you poke your head in can you forward them along. You know, if we just required that Pittlords post the setup for fights even if they don't get around to doing them, this would be less of a problem. Setups are less than five minutes of work to post... |
| Erithmu10-11-06, 06:54 PM | @McJ: Sometimes you don't have 5 minutes ... you should also save a copy of tactics, think of them like school papers. If the teacher loses it he/she won't know until you produce one and say that you turned it in. @Pitlords: Noticed something that will make Niqil jump up and down in his chair. Noko is actually ECL 9 due to leveling last fight (im guessing) so the horsemen probably can't fight her (even if it was an ECL 8 Noko) |
| Hirumajoe10-11-06, 07:04 PM | Questions regarding the running of monster fights, since I have to run one: Do I roll the monster with an online roller or "at home" to keep the exact monster hidden? If I roll a humanoid monster, like a kobold with 7 levels, how do I allocate stats? 13,12,11,10,9,8 array, arranged to taste? Thanks. |
| hogarth10-11-06, 07:23 PM | LEVEL 10 FIGHTS Nell Leonne (Huan) assaults EYE Townhall in Merisia : hogarth [Guild] [Miniquest] [Week 2] I'm a little hazy on how the Guild fights work. My understanding is that Nell Leonne will have a monster fight this week. What is the EL? A Townhall is a class A structure, so does that mean it's an EL9 fight? Does anyone know if Huan will be sending his own tactics this week (or posting for himself if it's a separate thread fight)? |
| lonewolf10-11-06, 07:45 PM | I just noticed that I dont have to write any tactics this week. This feels wierd.. :P |
| Erithmu10-11-06, 08:03 PM | I just noticed that I dont have to write any tactics this week. This feels wierd.. :P That means you have a week of 'think tank' for your next character (s) when Kitty and Chameleon get to frozen. |

Actually, this is a miniquest. Take a look at all the other miniquest threads to see what's involved. It would normally be EL 9, but check to see if Nell is mid-cycle. If so, it has to be at least his ECL (10). |

| c00lz310-11-06, 08:50 PM | @c00lz3: What are you miniquesting for? I am questing for the power to use animal affinity and Empathic Transfer when I reach lv 4. |
| Milov10-11-06, 09:01 PM | A bit of a question: In some of the arenas where there is no major roof (e.g. Forest, city, plains, etc.) , are Deep Dwarves and other Light Sensitive characters dazzled the entire time, or is it considered to be dark enough to relieve that effect, due to shadows from trees, buildings, etc? |
| Zevox10-11-06, 09:06 PM | I'll set up the miniquest thread and see what develops. When I originally asked Huan about doing this operation, he said he could probably post once per day. Given his lack of posting in the campaign hes involved in, that number seems to have dropped. So you're probably best running it as a monster fight - just PM him with what the monster is and see if he gets you tactics. And it'd be EL 10 - hes in mid-cycle after his intercept fight. @ Pitlords/Cat - What Erithmu said: Noko's ECL 9, so her fight with the horsemen is invalid. If you want, I'd be willing to fight her with Eraca (ECL 8), which would free up Sunstroke to fight the Horsemen in an inter-league match - keeps the same number of fights that way. @ Vath - Looking forward to Istima's MQ :) . At the moment, the lighting isn't considered a factor in a fights - its bright enough not to inhibit visibility, but dark enough that those with Light Sensitivity aren't affected. That may change soon, but for now theres no effect there. Zevox |

New rule...:nonono: This board gets more and more complicated every time i come here. Now we have skill packages to allow us special actions or something. *sigh* better get to reading. |
| Zevox10-11-06, 10:57 PM | @ Erithmu - Tactics for Eraca (vs Sunstroke) sent. This is a very bad time in her career for her to be facing him, but I think the map will even that out. @ NiQil - Tactics recieved. Zevox |

| Maraxus10-12-06, 05:45 AM | Hi, sorry, I did not write a note, that Noko leveled. :embarrass My internet broke (and I have to go online from the Uni). That's also why I will probably not be able to sent the tactic untill tomorrow morning. But anyway, first a question: Do I get my ambush benefits against that monster (theoretically, if I win the opposed tests)? |

If only one combatant sends me tactics however I have to run the fight myself, to do a thread fight all parties must agree. Note: A previous post of mine encouraged thread fights, but this isn;t the case anymore. When I typed that I thought I would have twice as many fights as I do now. So it is up to you guys. :D I only have to learn one map. ~Justin |
| hogarth10-12-06, 08:53 AM | :D I only have to learn one map. ~Justin In order to simplify things for new players, all ECL3 fights take place in the Arena now. |

| Pittbull10-12-06, 01:47 PM | Poor Manzarf is facing a black pudding in his monster fight. What happens exactly if he shoot he pudding with arrows. Slashing and piercing weapons deal no damage to a black pudding. Instead the creature splits into two identical puddings, each with half of the original’s current hit points (round down). A pudding with 10 hit points or less cannot be further split and dies if reduced to 0 hit points. After one hit there are two puddings with halfed HPs, but what's their size. Are they still huge? Or does the size go down one category? |

| Abyssal Stalker10-12-06, 01:57 PM | It's really odd that they don't say anything about the size. But it definitely s really odd if a huge creature can split up into 16 huge creatures, filling up to 54000 cubic feet.... it's 37x37x37 ft. |

But it definitely s really odd if a huge creature can split up into 16 huge creatures, filling up to 54000 cubic feet.... it's 37x37x37 ft. Maybe it has vinegar and baking soda packets in it, and when the piercing/slicing weapon hits them they burst, merge, and create a chemical reaction that somehow lets the pudding make more of itself, albeit weaker since it has more gassy pockets now(hence the less hp) |
| TheMagister10-12-06, 02:04 PM | @Maraxus - Monster Description and Equipment revealed! @Other Pitlords - can I get you to check the monster equipment I picked for the Bone Devil here? | Macbrea10-12-06, 02:08 PM | Well, there is a bit of a limit to number of times it can split. 115 -- 52 ---- 26 ------13 --------- 6 --------- 6 ------13 --------- 6 --------- 6 ---- 26 ------13 --------- 6 --------- 6 ------13 --------- 6 --------- 6 -- 52 ---- 26 ------13 --------- 6 --------- 6 ------13 --------- 6 --------- 6 ---- 26 ------13 --------- 6 --------- 6 ------13 --------- 6 --------- 6 So a limit of 16 times. At that level his fist may actually kill them. So, his best tactics really come down to split it a ton of times with bow then beat them up individually with fist. Their shear size will prevent them all from attacking him! |
| McJarvis10-12-06, 02:12 PM | So a limit of 16 times. At that level his fist may actually kill them. So, his best tactics really come down to split it a ton of times with bow then beat them up individually with fist. Their shear size will prevent them all from attacking him! I'd suggest only chaining them so you face as few as possible at once. So leave one with 50+hp, then split the remaining one. then leave one of those, and split another one, etc, etc. The danger of the pudding is the number of attacks they get once split. :-O Don't they have reach or something? (or magical "the dm doesn't want it to be that easy, so he suddenly decides they can fly" syndrome?) ;) |
| waywreth10-12-06, 02:13 PM | True, and don't forget with them all being huge, they have nasty grapple checks with acid and improved grab. |
| hogarth10-12-06, 02:15 PM | The danger of the pudding is the number of attacks they get once split. :-O I'd also suggest it's tough to beat a Huge creature in a grapple (let alone 16 of them). EDIT: Waywreth beat me to it.... :D |
| Macbrea10-12-06, 02:18 PM | Well, technically if you let them grapple you then swing with a guantlet in a grapple you only have to hit an AC of 7. In the case of Manzarf raged. He autokills them on any roll but a 1. |
| Pittbull10-12-06, 02:26 PM | With Abyssal's giving tactic, Manzarf will create 16 huge black puddings, all with 6 HPs. Since the fight takes place in the plains and the oozes have only blindesight of 60ft, they even don't know where the attacks are coming from. I just have to try out how many arrow the dwarf uses (he has alltogether 94). But then he has to go for melee and after a few rounds he'll be surrounded and grappled. Is there a chance to win? EDIT: It could look like this: http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=plains;a= Man,M,8,89;b= Ooz,C,73,83;c= Ooz,C,73,90;style=s Thenin melee, he can get 4 attacks per round? Right? http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=arena;a=Name,M,31,50;b= Name,H,32,50;c=Name,H,31,53;d=Name,H,29, 49;e=Name,H,28,52;style=s |
| Highfire10-12-06, 02:33 PM | @Highfire: Tactics for Mort sent. have fun with that one. McJarvis: Tactics received... wow, if tactics could have an alignment, these would be neutral evil :D Very detailed thank you. >.< I can't remember but what action was it to will your crystal to grow legs and walk? Agustus1: PM question about tactics sent. A few things you leaned on will not work. ~Justin |
| Macbrea10-12-06, 02:34 PM | Yes, a very good chance. Assuming he kills the first one outright. AC 3 is only miss on a 1. That leaves 15 of huge creatures vs 1 medium. SRD, "Several combatants can be in a single grapple. Up to four combatants can grapple a single opponent in a given round. Creatures that are one or more size categories smaller than you count for half, creatures that are one size category larger than you count double, and creatures two or more size categories larger count quadruple." Meaning only 1 may grapple him per turn. The creature grappled may attack with a melee weapon. (gauntlets) in hand to hand. If he rolls greater then a 1 on the to hit. He does 1d3+4 +(2 raged) damage vs 6 hps. Pretty much autokilling it. Because black puddings only get 1 attack per round they may initiate a grapple. And that is it. This means he will expend 15-16 arrows then auto kill his way though all of the black puddings that are left. The combat almost becomes simplistic based off the tactics that I bet are written. |
| McJarvis10-12-06, 02:58 PM | >.< I can't remember but what action was it to will your crystal to grow legs and walk? A standard action. Again, have luck//fun with that one :) |

He does 1d3+4 +(2 raged) damage vs 6 hps. Pretty much autokilling it. True but everytime he gets hit he takes: 2d6+4 plus 2d6 acid, and each one of those puddings has a 10' reach. |
| Hirumajoe10-12-06, 04:06 PM | @Hogarth: Tactics received. @All: While I have come up with a set of tactics for the monster in Molehusband's fight, which is a Mimic of all things, I was wondering how other people might handle it. Since given its slow speed (10' !) and the fact that its ability (disguise as a large object like a chest or door) seem rather useless in the core coliseum. Thanks. |

But then, it would probably get a delay penalty if it tried that. We may need to tweak some of the monster tables, in case of situations where the monster simply isn't viable in any situation. Remember the no auto-win clause--if the monster has no chance to win whatsoever, you reroll. Oh yeah, and : @Erithmu: Tactics sent for Sunstroke. Forgot to mention it earlier. |
| Pittbull10-12-06, 04:10 PM | Doesn't deal the gauntlet only 1d3+2, since it is a light weapon? He didn't wanted to rage in the fight. Sorry but he didn't have a chance. The fight is posted here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10335775&postcount=106). Sorry, Abyssal, but that ooze was a real nasty thread for Manzarf. | MindWandererB10-12-06, 04:47 PM | Oh, yeah, speaking of MQs: Papapeperoni, are you around at all? Can we work on Besthirah's? @Erithmu and Zevox: Just noticed this: - Sunstroke cannot wear both his gauntlets and his gloves of dexterity – they both use the same item slot! Since he prebuffed the gauntlets, he’ll have to switch them in mid-fight if he wants the gloves here.I'm not sure about this. The gloves of Dex are "thin leather gloves are very flexible and allow for delicate manipulation." I would think they can be worn under gauntlets, which, being weapons, don't take up the glove "slot." If my opinion is overruled, I'll be refunding the gauntlets. In any event, I'd appreciate it if they were allowed to be worn in this fight. |
| Papapeperoni10-12-06, 05:20 PM | @MindWandererB: I want to do it as soon as possible, but I really suck at making maps. Could anyone point me to a good online mapmaker (just a simple one). I've got some time tomorrow morning/afternoon, maybe some on saturday, and the complete sunday (I'm in +2 GMT). Sorry for all this. I'm staying away from miniquests for a while. I've somehow ended up at -2 credits :(. Greetings, --Papapeperoni |

In any event, I'd appreciate it if they were allowed to be worn in this fight. Would you say that they can be worn at the same time as Gauntlets of Ogre Power, then? No, I'd definitely have to say that gloves take up the hand slot, thin though they may be, or as logical as being able to wear them under a gauntlet may be (its also logical that you could wear both a brooch and an amulet, or multiple amulets, yet that doesn't work). Zevox |

ZevoxOf course gloves take up the slot reserved for magical "hand" items. But spiked gauntlets don't--they're not magic "items," even if they're enchanted, they're weapons. The "item slot" rule has nothing to do with physical location, but rather function. Thus the 2-ring limit. But if the gauntlets don't provide a bonus or ability to the wearer, they shouldn't interfere with the gloves. In fact, it's possible to wear more than 2 rings at the same time, but only 2 will function. Since the spiked gauntlets have no function, the gloves are the only item competing for that slot. |

Save an offline copy of your fights before posting LOL. Notepad is your friend. Notepad is your friend. *shrugs* I run all of my battles online. I just edit the post as I run it. Never ran into this issue before - seems the button is unique to the new boards. I'd be a lot more upset if you had told me I lost....considering I had no idea (both as a PC and a player) what I was fighting. In hindsight, me going after the quadriped first seems laughable LOL. Eh, you killed it on the first attack anyway, so it didn't cost you anything. It was shockingly close though - they managed to kill Death, and Pestilence had only 3 hp at one point (and here I had though you should be able to slaughter them with ease in 1-2 strokes each - seems Sahuagin with the items I gave them are tougher than I thought). Some utterly freakish luck shifts in the rolling went on. But at least I can finally get my remaining Horsemen to Level 7.....and retire them. <pauses for cheers from pitlords everywhere> I've been running them for close to a year...time for a fresh start. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10333840&postcount=104) I don't see how I did anything out of the ordinary, but I want opinions. TM Oh my, you a E-vil! :D I was sooo expecting a spirit Naga ;) And seriously, a Spirit Naga would have been something like 3 CR lower (2 with eqipment). Well, at least, it can't see invisible things, if anyone can beat it (at level 9) it's my little Noko. I'm so overpowered. It can nearly not hit me, plus the damage is minimal, if it hits. I just have to watch out for the poison (but creatures don't get a full attack against a flyby pixie anyway), so on the long run, my sneaky attacks will even work through this heavy damage reduction. Let's hope 80 arrows are enough. |
| TheMagister10-13-06, 07:18 AM | :D My first monster description was "A large biped with unholy red eyes", but then I slapped myself and changed it to something a LOT more ambiguous. Concerning sneak attacks: Does the initial damaging shot have to penetrate DR in order to deal (the additional) sneak attack damage? I can't remember if extra damage follows the same rules as injury poison... Edit: added monstrous tactics to the battles post. Tried to stay true to the bone devil's normal modus operandi. |
| Maraxus10-13-06, 07:27 AM | I'm really sure it does not have to, I think this question was asked somewhere around here just a week ago. About equipment: Well, I as a Pitlord would give monsters that are not supposed to have equipment the worst equipment I can think of, but overall I think it's relativly fair. Giving a +Con item to a creature with poison is evil, but that demon has so many Evil ends that it can make good use of any items equally. (And without much thinking I chould think of some stuff that would be much better. - So no problem here.) PS: And DON'T say, the pixie made the fight unfair complicated to pitlord, if your monster wants to use such tactic. Let's see, the monster needs 2.5 walls to split the Temple North/South once, 14 times this to seperate the temple into 10ft allys, just as many to cut it west/east and half as much to cut it up/down. That's 107 castings of The wall, plus teleporting between them to get line of effect (What is virtually impossible after the first few castings), and all this with only 120 rounds duration - it will never get me. *dances* - *shoots* - *laughts* - get's smacked* - *stands up again* - *has 30 HP left* - *dances on* That's not like the Bralani, that basicly had the "We win" ability, where possibly I could have demanded the pitlord to pitlord it out and it would have taken him about 6 in-game hours and about 2 real-life month, but in the end, they would have gotten me. This time I can win. |
| Vathelokai10-13-06, 07:32 AM | Can I get opinions, please? I don't want to get into this and then have someone raise the "unfair!" flag... TM Equip looks fine. I love the tactics :D Poor Noko. |
| Highfire10-13-06, 09:14 AM | Sneak Attacks: Sneak Attack damage follows whatever the normal damage was that dealed the attack. If you use Melf's Acid Arrow the Sneak Attack damage is Acid, A weapon deals sneak attack damage based off of what the weapon bypasses. Sneak Attack damage is added damage so if a creature has damage reduction and your weapon damage doesn't cover it, the Sneak Attack damage has to cover the rest before actual damage is done to it. TheMagister: As per your PM I will be taking over this fight. Please forward me the tactics if Papapeperoni accidentally sends them to you. No rocks, then, eh? :) They were my last hope. I could've sworn that there were some rocks just to be picked...or mushrooms to throw at them...or grass. Yes, throwing grass would've been the way to go! No, seriously, a tough challenge with no hope. Thanks anyway! @Rith: It's coming. Work is like hell, but it will be done. | Highfire10-13-06, 11:33 AM | (Su) Supernatural Ability, As per the DMG it is a magical effect and does not function in a antimagic field but it is not spell-like. However this begs the question, what si the difference between 'Magical effects' and 'Spell effects'. Specifically in regards to Deflect Arrows. The Mindblade is given a ranged increment when thrown so it IS a ranged weapon. Under just that circumstance it can be deflected. But Deflect Arrows, says 'spell effects' cannot be deflected. What do people think? I reason that if a arrow shot at someone with the Flaming magical ability can be deflected then so can a Mindblade. ~Justin Edit: Of course there is an easy way around this, take Two-Weapon Fighting, split your blade and throw both of them, only one can be deflected. |

To odds are worse, though, since the two 20's have to start with an attack roll and not some other sort of roll. So # of attacks/ # of rolls in fight * 1/20 * 1/20. :) ...of course, there's a good chance that no one cared about that.... Well, no, I was just looking at a single two-roll crit-crit confirm sequence. We can assume that all the rolls can be anything. So it'd actually be better if we consider multiple 2-roll pairs over the entire fight, but just one sequence of 2 20's is 1/400. |

Yeah, but it's not just a simple 20, then 20 calculation because of situations like...: Spot to see opponent: (20)+6=26 attack: (20!) confirm: (16).... So you have to take all the rolls into account :) So you take the chances of the die roll in question being an attack roll, then the chances of that attack roll being a natural twenty, and then the chances of the roll directly following it being a 20 as well. I love statistics. Of course, I guess if you want a simplified model of each individual hit having a 1/400 chance of hitting, that's ok....but this system is a bit more accurate...I think. though the number of trails is variable technically...hum.... *goes off to do something else* |

Right. But let's draw it out: rolls rolls rolls attack confirm rolls rolls rolls All the "rolls" can be any number, 1-20. So, P(rolls) = 1. Attack and confirm must be 20, so P(attack) = 1/20 = P(confirm). We multiply them all together and get 1/400. |

You know, given all the variables of the fight I bet I could construct a somewhat complex Markov chain that is hard-coded to preserve history. By doing that we could make up for the variable number of rolls(crit confirms only happen on an actual crit & you only roll until opponent is dead)...it was my senior project last year...I make a complete markov chain to model monopoly, complete with history-preserving(normally impossible) to account for rolling doubles three times in a row and whatnot.... |

| MindWandererB10-13-06, 03:43 PM | @MindWandererB: I want to do it as soon as possible, but I really suck at making maps. Greetings, --Papapeperoni Sorry, I just read this more carefully. We should probably run this as a pitlord-style fight. Most of my time to play is on the weekdays, and I'm rapidly running out. Give me some monster info and I'll give you tactics. Just use a standard arena map if you have to--let's just get this over with. |

I'm thinking about redoing Jade in any case (If nothing else, to change Kirlois to Krios, as that is an actual town for better BG), after spending a few days looking at options, dropping the tiefling for a human and adding a level of figther keeps my weapons the same, gives me 11 more hitpoints and 5 more skill points... so I'll probably be redoing her in any case, but it seemed to work out well. |

| TheMagister10-13-06, 05:30 PM | It doesn't change the result, but in round 3, Toron is entitled to a Listen check to hear Jade's attack, and if it succeeds, he can deflect the arrow. I really don't like that bent on the "awareness of attacks" rule. In my opinion, you can't deflect something you hear but can't see (unless you're doing the synesthete/blindsight/touchsight thing). TM He's half right; Toron gets a listen check if only because Jade doesn't autosucceed her move silently rolls, but even if Toron succeeds and knows he is being attacked, he is still flat-footed in relation to Jade because he cant see her and thus, would be unable to deflect the attack. Conversely, things you can see but not hear, do not make you flat-footed ;) |

Conversely, things you can see but not hear, do not make you flat-footed ;) But she didn't move anywhere. She was standing still until she drew down on Toron. Are you saying there should be a MS roll just for THAT ("that" being the moment just before she fires)? |
| Gonbow10-13-06, 05:46 PM | But she didn't move anywhere. She was standing still until she drew down on Toron. Are you saying there should be a MS roll just for THAT ("that" being the moment just before she fires)? Different people do MS differently; in my humble opinion, unless you are incorporeal or a construct, your going to need to roll every round to represent your 'stillness', which gives your opponent a chance to hear you. In addition, whenever you do something that specifically makes noise, like casting a spell/saying a command word. Attacking doesn't really specifically make noise, though it tends to be noisey in and of itself. But yes, I'd say Toron would get a listen check at some point during Jade's turn. The exact timing of such tends to be whatever is most convenient for the person trying to do the listening, so it would be before the arrow hits him, I imagine. Still wouldn't do 'em much good ^_^ |

If there's something in the FAQ or RAW that I'm missing, please point me in the right direction...I'm not sure whether I agree or not, but we had this discussion before. Deflect Arrows works if you're flatfooted or if you're unaware of the attack. Torin isn't flatfooted (battle has begun), and he doesn't have to see the attack to be aware of it (see the recent FAQ item on assassins for an example of awareness without sight). Since we have a quasi-ruling on what "awareness" means, we have to use it everywhere the word is used. CoCo precedent places the "twang" of a bowstring at Listen DC 0. I would personally prefer a ruling that's weapon-independent, but that's the standing rule. |

I beg to differ on that one... smells like stealth nerfing. Which really doesn't need to be nerfed given all the answers available. Perhaps a different concept is needed after all, as I'm sure a crossbow would be about the same noise if not louder. Maybe thrown weapons. |

| McJarvis10-13-06, 05:59 PM | Yea, it really should be something like DC5 or 10. Does MS affect it? I'd imagine a level 20 rogue could shoot more silently than a level 1 commoner.... |
| Gonbow10-13-06, 06:08 PM | Does MS affect it? I'd imagine a level 20 rogue could shoot more silently than a level 1 commoner.... Hence the comment about stealth nerfing; as described, it would be a flat DC that doesn't change. (Much like casting a spell. And I really doubt shooting a bow to be as loud or easily heard as someone casting a spell) EDIT: So... I'll take this to the Ask the Elders thread and get some more information on this. Yeah. |
| TheMagister10-13-06, 06:12 PM | The thing is, a snipe doesn't have to be quiet to be successful. I don't mind the target hearing the attack, but knowing that something is "over there" or even "right there" doesn't automatically mean that you see it. An arrow from anyone under the affect of an Improved Invisibility spell technically becomes visible as soon as it is fired, but the target still loses its Dex to AC vs. the shot. By the RAW, that arrow is auto-spotted as soon as it loses total concealment. By common sense, that arrow is moving too darned fast to be seen; by the time you hear the bow's "twang" ("Howdy, ya'll." Heh.) and turn your head to get an eye on it, the arrow's already lodged in your ear. I'm sorry, I just can't subscribe to that nonsense. Then again, I'm still stupefied by the "disappearing bolas" thing. Then again, this is a good time to have this discussion, as there's nothing critical hinging on the answer. Silver linings, people... |
| MindWandererB10-13-06, 06:19 PM | This makes good sense to me. I also dislike the inconsistency across weapons. However, the "awareness" rule does include a hearing clause. My proposal: The attacker is trying to make an attack, quietly. Unlike Hide, you apparently suffer no penalty for attacking while moving silently (this is new to me). So it should be a simple MS check at no penalty to remain unheard while you set up the shot. If you actually get to the point of launching the attack (releasing the bowstring, etc.) then you have successfully remained silent, your opponent is unaware, and Deflect Arrows won't work (and you can sneak attack if in range). |
| Highfire10-13-06, 07:19 PM | Actually the fight I am running depends upon this critically. Right now I am running it as MS versus Listen. Since you have to be at least 10 feet away, the point is whether you can pinpoint someone within ten feet. If you can't, ah well you know the direction and try going there. If they manage to stay hiden you can rinse and repeat this providing the listen stumbled past you by 10 ft. Anyway, I need to get back if I hope to finish this tonight. ~Justin |

| NiQil10-13-06, 09:19 PM | Regarding the Deflect Arrows/Mind Blade issue: Though not in the Court Decisions (I'll add it), I have had rulings issued against characters in relation to fights vs some of Snommelp's characters when he was here before I was an Elder. The ruling was that Deflect Arrows would work vs a Mind Blade, because it meets all of the criteria for it. It is a ranged attack, it is not a spell effect, and it is not unusually massive. |
| NiQil10-13-06, 09:22 PM | The thing is, a snipe doesn't have to be quiet to be successful. | Hirumajoe10-14-06, 01:48 AM | You've pretty much made the point yourself. By the RAW, that arrow is auto-spotted, so as long as the other conditions for Deflect Arrows are met, it works. This is a case of applying real-world logic to D&D rules. By real-world logic, you are correct. By the RAW, you are not. So if the arrow has either concealment, requiring a spot check to see (and assuming the check is failed vs a diminuative object or so) or is invisible (since you can cast invisibility on objects) then it shouldn't be able to be deflected, correct? As for the loudness of a bow string, you can put silencers on it to dampen the vibration, reducing the noise it produces. But in any case, that is definitely not in the RAW and is dependant on CoCo ruling. However, in the worst case you could invest in a custom item of silence 1/day. Or UMD a silence scroll. That by definition would make the bow silent. Although it does raise the question: If I twang my bow, say with a move action before actually firing, does that waste my target's deflect arrows use, especially if invisible arrows are involved, since the target wouldn't be able to tell the difference until actually being hit? One possible direction I've considered taking Valen Sky is the archery, touchsight, necklace of adaptation and eversmoking bottle route. So having an answer to this might be handy. |
| Hirumajoe10-14-06, 01:52 AM | I have a question for you... What are the odds of rolling the same number on two dice? Is it the same as the number of faces on the die, or is there something I'm missing. Had a disagreement with a buddy of mine... The odds that you roll *any* number on the first die is 1 out of 1. The odds that the next die you roll is a particular single number (the one that was rolled the first time) is 1 out of the number of faces on the die, assuming a fair die. For example, consider the case of 2 d4s. Possible outcomes are: 1 1..... 2 1..... 3 1..... 4 1 1 2..... 2 2..... 3 2..... 4 2 1 3..... 2 3..... 3 3..... 4 3 1 4..... 2 4..... 3 4..... 4 4 Out of the 16 possibilites, there are 4 where you roll the same number, so 1 out of 4. Hope that answers your question. |

Fortunately, Kervan finished most of his buffs just in time anyway. The Shield of Faith would have been nice (and I would have complained had it proved necessary), but it all worked out. I think I always counted the distance penalties - I was just very inconsistent with the notation. Sometimes I recorded the distance penalty (correctly) as a penalty to the listen roll, other times I added it to the move silent roll or the DC (incorrect, but mathematically the same). I'm still figuring out my fight format. Did I do the pipes incorrectly? I thought they negated the distance penalty to listen between their two ends. |

| Abyssal Stalker10-14-06, 07:18 AM | I really think that the rulings on invisible attacks vs deflect arrows really suck here in CoCo. Nothing personal, but that's just the case IMO. Being not able to see the attacker and still being able to deflect the arrow is just way too overpowered. In here we seem to be ruling it that the person attacked just needs the slightest clue that he might be attacked some time. I'd say that DA should require LoS in order to be used. It just doesn't meake sense that you hear the arrow coming or something like that. Sorry about that. I just had to let out some steam on this one... |

| NiQil10-14-06, 07:55 AM | Niq, that's just bunk. If the arrow's auto-spotted, why does the defender lose his Dex to AC vs the attack? TM Spotting the arrow has no bearing on being able to react to the arrow, which is what losing the Dex to AC represents. Hence the reason Deflect Arrows is a feat that allows you to deal with this type of situation in a specialized manner. If Deflect Arrows were not a viable option, then Deflect Arrows would state that you can't use it anytime you are denied your Dex to AC, rather than just anytime you are flat-footed. A subtle, but distinct difference. Again....from a real-world perspective I fully understand what you are trying to say. Problem is you are trying to fit that real-world perspective into a rules mock-up that doesn't really exist. The biggest problem with Deflect Arrows is that it uses the phrase "aware of the attack", but being aware of an attack is not defined anywhere (at least until the most recent FAQ came out). This seems to be the biggest hangup that everyone has with the feat. So what myself and the other Elders need to do is come up with a universal definition for what being aware of an attack means (kinda like what was done in defining trained for war for warhorses), so that DA has a functional mechanic, rather than an arbitrary line in the feat that gets ruled differently from fight to fight. |

(http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10355647&postcount=124) This fight should be simple and dirty. Could go both ways. Also do I need to report to the prison thread a simple mistake that does not affect statistics? On Kagun Flinthand's character sheet they list Large Longspear +5 to attack but underneath it says [+4 Str, +1 BAB, +1 Enhancement] They just forgot to drop the enhancment off, probably after deciding not to go masterwork on that weapon. Do I have to report to the prison a simple mistake such as this? ~Justin |
| Zelck10-14-06, 11:11 AM | Do I have to report to the prison a simple mistake such as this? ~Justin You could, and receive .1 credits. It is kind of minor though. EDIT: @Highfire: Mage Armor stacks with the Monk's AC bonus. |

| Highfire10-14-06, 11:50 AM | o.O Wow some serious mistakes for Rolf here, just finished going over his Character sheet. Problems, He used the Faerun version of a Wood Elf, This gives +2 Str, +2 Dex, and -2 Con, -2 Int. He should have used the Monster Manual Version, +2 Str, -2 Int. Also his +1 Mythril Chain Shirt is listed and calculated at 2100, it should be 3250, 2000 +1 enhancment, 1000 Mythril Light Armor, 100 Chainshirt, 150 Masterwork Can I run the fight with these glaring mistakes or does he autolose? ~Justin |
| Zevox10-14-06, 12:07 PM | He used the Faerun version of a Wood Elf, This gives +2 Str, +2 Dex, and -2 Con, -2 Int. He should have used the Monster Manual Version, +2 Str, -2 Int. Correction: the MM version gives +2 strength, +2 dexterity, -2 constitution, -2 intelligence. It says that the str/int mods are in addition to the base Elf traits, which include the dex/con mods. The Forgotten Realms version includes a -2 charisma modifier to help balance the +2 strength, which the MM does not include. Also his +1 Mythril Chain Shirt is listed and calculated at 2100, it should be 3250, 2000 +1 enhancment, 1000 Mythril Light Armor, 100 Chainshirt, 150 Masterwork Incorrect. Mithril is automatically masterwork at no extra cost, and armor only costs 1,000 gp to make +1. So 2,100 gp for a +1 Mithril Chain Shirt is completely correct. Can I run the fight with these glaring mistakes or does he autolose? ~Justin Considering neither are mistakes, you're good to go ;) . Zevox |

Her PP allotment is 3 per fight. She used 2 in her first fight, so 1 carries over. That leaves her ner normal 3, plus 1, total 4. Fortunately it didn't matter. Is that the way it works? I though the 1/3 rule applied until the last fight of the cycle. Okay, live-n-learn. In the case of the unaugmented Expansion, I'm kinda glad I didn't waste her PP on it. I'm right that it only lasts 1 round, right? TM |

| MindWandererB10-14-06, 09:54 PM | Sunstroke vs Eraca is up. Counting arrows will take a little longer as dinner is almost ready. Although I hate to make your life more difficult... both of us had healing contingencies which weren't followed. Sunstroke should have re-vigored when the first one ran out, and Eraca should have begun using her CLW wand when reduced below 22 HP in round 26. |
| Erithmu10-14-06, 10:01 PM | My bad ... I went looking for the healing wand when she hit 0 as well, but I couldn't find it. Now that I see it ... It is time to go back.... seeing as how this might take a while .... might go for the ECL3 Team fight to make sure it gets done, they are on week 2. |
| hogarth10-14-06, 10:12 PM | 1 round per level, so in her case 3 rounds. But you're right, it would be largely a waste of pp (two rounds of being expanded before you need to restore it...). | Zevox10-14-06, 10:42 PM | Well, 2.5 rounds. Note that Expansion is a standard action to manifest (as opposed to Enlarge Person). Yeah, but you can't really do much with it on the round you manifest it without a standard action, so its effectively 2 rounds. @ Erithmu/MWB - Ow! Bungling both attempts to put Shield up - thats huge! With that, I expect Sunstroke will win by virtue of Eraca being much easier to hit than expected. But yeah, it'll be nice to see the healing followed through on - if nothing else it might get her to run out of arrows and start diving, or outlast that resist energy buff so her frost enchantment can do its work when she hits (not that shes had many of those - damn rolls are working against her all around in that fight). Zevox By the time that R:energy buff runs you will have run out of arrows about 8 times over. Not gonna happen (it ends round 305) I also appologize for not listing it on the buff list on the end of round summaries. If we have reached that point ... well ... lets just say bad things will happen. I'm kinda surprized about the lack of crits/crit threats, would make my life easy. |

Sunstroke is a plenty good enough grappler even without his buffs. |
| Zevox10-14-06, 11:28 PM | True, true, but how many can you get off before you have a giant pair of hands around your neck? Sunstroke is a plenty good enough grappler even without his buffs. Depends on the map. If we fight in the Sewer or Cavern, the fight is basically over before it begins (at least until the really high levels when she can afford to buy a wand of freedom of movement at the cost of 21,000 gp and 5 credits and become immune to you grappling monkeys once and for all). Anywhere else, on the other hand, Sunstroke will have a hard time catching a flying Eraca to do any grappling. Zevox |

You can't hurt this thing and it's just a matter of time before he finds you. Ended it in round 40-something. Check it out. On a related note: How does one get the Player C (and D and so forth) pins to work in the mapper? I thought that that issue was fixed... TM No, I don't accept this. Noko is actively tring to find the Opponent, so she will not take any delay penalty. At some point, he will come into 30ft (it would help, if you let me patrol a bit) and I will get spot checks. Furthermore, I think it would not be too unreasonable, to go detect evil, since the creature really looks evil. Or create an image of myself. I gave you permission to use any spell-likes, if it looks like a good idea and in a situation, where I'm just hovering around, waiting for death, I think this could be such a point (but if you think this is a too complicated tactic to improvise, okay, just make spot/listen checks). Oh, of cause, once I have realised that I can't hurt it, you can stop the spotting tactic and have Noko think of something else. Furthermore, as shown in my last post, the first ice walls will run out of duration much before he has seperated the arena into bits small enough to get me, so his tactic is equally as furtile. Even more, he will be able to make the same asumtion, so he knows, he is just delaying. He should get some kind of penatly! Noko is hunting him, invisible, he is just hiding invisible and setting up walls so I can't find him. Defintily he is to blame and I demand the delay-penatly-referees to punish him for that. |
| TheMagister10-15-06, 07:06 AM | fair enough if you want me to roll it out. Duration on Ice Wall is 12 minutes (which I think is more than enough time). Gives me something to do today. {shrug} I'll get back to work on it. |
| Maraxus10-15-06, 07:33 AM | Okay. To bad you don't want to change the tactics. :) Btw, I have not explicitly mentioned the use of see invisibility (scroll), but not forbitten it either and Pitlords - Improvisation Sometimes you have to adept and improvise. Pitlord adaption is a common thing and is used in many fights. Sometimes a situation arises that is not covered by the players tactic, or the tactic a player wrote clearly doesn't work (anymore). In this case, you can take over the character and adept with basic tactics accordingly. Perhaps you might want to take a look at the characters description (behaviour) and his mental stats for guidelines on how he might react. Try to think yourself into this character but also try to find a good balance. A pitlord adaption shouldn't be a boon to the one whose tactics broke down, nor should the character act like a fool. In any case, it is up to you to decide. PS: But I won't complain about tactics isuess, as long as I get a fair chance and not simply "I can think of a tactic where you probably can't harm the monster, so it wins.", okay? ;) |
| TheMagister10-15-06, 07:48 AM | Hey, I'm out of ideas for Noko. I've literally got nothing. It's invisible and shrouded in darkness (which, considering its racial abilities, should be nothing unusual). Noko can't sneak attack it. If Noko starts casting a spell, the DC 0 listen check just makes my job even easier (it fails on, like, a 3+modifiers, and the mods are really darned small with the arena shrinking the way it is). If Noko detects evil (and concentrates for three rounds, AND beats the SR) then (congratulations) she knows that there's something moving that big ball of shadow that's been flying around. She KNOWS that that is her enemy. I'm at a loss about what she aims to DO about it! Say she creates an image. Say he chases it. Great. You've shaved two rounds off of the 120 round duration of the FIRST ice wall. The 'little bits' only have to be big enough for him to move around in and through. He'll narrow the field down quickly as soon as he makes a DC 20 Spot check to "notice an invisible something is there". He doesn't even have to know exactly where you are...the process of elimination will do that nicely. You'll see. I'll roll it out. |
| Maraxus10-15-06, 08:26 AM | Oh, right. Darkness, 30 Minutes per potion. Had not considered that. Oh, and I just noticed both of the 2 have hide modifiers 2 highter then the opponents spot modifiers. With +20 hide through invisibility, they will not be able to see each other ever. I'm also 2 size categories smaller, so I can stay in it's square (cube in 3d) without him auto-noticing me. Hm, no, this were 3 size categories. ... For real, what happens, if he teleports into a 10x10x10 section with me in. By the rules, I think he can't do that. Well, a lot of stuff here is not really fair and you don't make the rules, your part is really small in this. |
| TheMagister10-15-06, 10:12 AM | It's a tough fight. I think that if you knew exactly what you were up against and the map were something different, you would have a fair to even chance of eventually doing damage. The biggest problem is that he's a bruiser of a monster that just happens to be a sneaker AND a spellcaster, too. Don't talk to me about Devils. Sdentch and Auburn just got chewed up by a whole temple full of 'em. TM |
| TheMagister10-15-06, 10:54 AM | All right. I added the 20 some-odd rounds it took for him to finally trap Noko into a space in which he threatens the entire room. Really, Maraxus: if you have ANY ideas as to how else this could turn out, I'm all ears. I have no stake in this and tried to be fair with all my choices. I read the monster description (which mentioned Ice Wall's tactical usage by the monster) and checked up on its ability to see even in magical darkness. After that, it was kinda HARD not to pick a Hand of Glory (which would've achieved the same result, just faster). Even though any self-respecting high level gladiator has anti-invis tactics or items, I specifically avoided it so as to negate any "he's stacking the monster against my character!" posts. I just don't know what else to do... I played a smart monster smart. TM |

| Abyssal Stalker10-16-06, 02:09 AM | It's really nice to see such a blast of positive attitude for a while! Usually we only have people whining: "All my characters are losing this week..." or "The pitlord didn't read my tactics and now I lost..." Who's the best loser is almost as good a competition as the "The slowest hand": "Draw!" (a couple of minutes pass by as the cowboys are trying to get their guns out of the holsters) BAM! "Aaarghh...I...won!" |
| Maraxus10-16-06, 07:16 AM | Magister: Sure, it was not your fault. The rules are bad. Basicly I had the "You lost" card again when you had choosen the equipment (I just did not realise there). I can't really blame myself either - the character is still overpowered and the tactic was as good as it could be. Only the rules left to blame. ;) *Goes for the council thread* Well, at least Durin was the last gladiator standing in the fight of massive group smackage. That's fight how the barbarien heart loves it, 10 creaturs clash in the middle and celebrate random violence. |

| TelinArtho10-16-06, 01:08 PM | ECL3: Team fight holdover 10 walked in and 4 walked or were teleported out with hp remaining. Kon + Durin vs Carandol + Zax @Erithmu - I disagree about your ruling that Food can't be ordered to pin without the grapple trick. If it was required - that should be stated explicitly in the trick itself. I also don't agree with splitting up my pets on different opponents - though I didn't specifically mention this in my tactics. In round 2, ordering Food to attack is a free action (animal companion) - so Trident should be ordered to attack in that round as well. Also, the command that you state for Food is "Attack Kon" - yet in the actions Food attacks Durin it seems? Typo? In round 8 I don't see a poison fortitude save for Valdorn. There might be more - but that's all I see right off the bat. EDIT: In round 6, given that they are already fighting Valdorn, I don't understand why Zax orders Trident to now attack Durin (especially if it means drawing an AoO) but yet leave Net there alone. |
| McJarvis10-16-06, 03:19 PM | @myfighters: sorry this is taking a while...I only have one hand to work with right now(burned my left hand beyond typing ability)... hopefully I'll finish within a few hours... |
| MindWandererB10-16-06, 03:35 PM | Nah. Niqil's still here. :gah: And me, from time to time. A bad week deserves some sympathy, IMO. @Zevox and Vath: from "killing fields": You had an issue with this rule: A spell-like ability has a casting time of 1 standard action unless noted otherwise in the ability or spell description.note 'or spell description.' That means that if the spell description says it's a full-round casting time, then so should the SLA. I didn't follow the fight closely enough to see if it would make a difference. |

This will make my life a LOT easier, and I should be able to complete the fights even faster! Yay! Maybe Drac updated the links, or changed his server configuration or something. My old favorites links to those tools got shot down, but the links from his post here work fine. Hmm... TM Nice, I wan't aware of your problem from yuor office. Do you remember last time you checked my server from office and it wan't working? So I could be able to remember If I did some changes. Actually I have some problems crawling the forum because a little overbusy with university (doing thesis for graduation) However If you have problems send me email, or PM, or IM, I'll reply. |
| Erithmu10-16-06, 04:57 PM | @Erithmu - I disagree about your ruling that Food can't be ordered to pin without the grapple trick. Pin: The issue I have is that I can't find in the SRD or the house rules information on a 'pin' trick. Now granted I know what you want to do with it, but this is an Animal companion, with no Imp. Grapple feat, and no 'grapple' trick. I'm sorry I stand by my decision on this issue unless you can find it in the house rules, Or I can go back and try to make a push (move action) for grapple and then you can then order a pin (free) For Trident: Added a full attack on the dice roller (round 22: one hit, Val drops in round 5 right before the messy round 6. Hrum that causes some changes in stuff, since Val isn't there to trip him on the AoO ... Will look into ...) Round 2: yes a typo Round 8: I thought Val was going to die (he had a good chance), I can roll it if you really want to, but technically he doesn't make another attack, I just ran out round 9 since I had made a mistake in a hit that kicked in Durin's healing contingency. Round 6 Start of round map: http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=cavern;a=Net,M,10,22;b= Trid,M,10,21;c=Val,M,11,22;d=Kon,M,12,22 ;e=Duri,L,13,22;f=Cara,M,15,21 Net in red, Val in Green, Trident in blue, Durin in brown, Cara in Olive, Kon in pink (Note: I just realized that I have Food's posistion wrong for most of the fight, it should be 11,21 rather than 10,21 if he when he was attacking Kon) At the start of the round Food fell over due to attacking at 0 hp. I had Trident move in order to give Cara flanking/sneak attack. Granted Durin took him out before Cara could attack, but it was a modification to allow Cara an opportunity to Sneak if he got around to his turn. In closing: I'll take a look at stuff from round 6 on, unless you can find me the trick rules for grapple/pin, they are going to be houserule, and you might have to run them into Ask an Elder. Need to take care of some other stuff, so I'll wait for a comment before I start going back over stuff. |
| TelinArtho10-16-06, 05:09 PM | A quick PM to resolve this would've been nice and would've avoided the necessity to change things. Here's where you can find the Pin trick: Under Single Skill activities, Handle Animal, Optional Animal Tricks: Ambush (DC 15): The animal hides using the Hide skill to the best of its ability. It then stays in one place and attacks the first creature to come near it, unless it has been previously trained to recognize the creature as a friend. Bull Rush (DC 15): The animal attempts to bull rush a designated creature. Flush Out (DC 20): The animal moves into an area and, if it encounters any creatures, it makes noise and feints attacks toward the creature in an attempt to drive it to you. If the animal makes the creature move, there is a 50% chance that the quarry moves directly toward you. Otherwise, the quarry veers to your left or right (equal chance for each). Overrun (DC 15): The animal attempts to overrun a designated creature. If the animal has the trample special ability, it uses that ability against the creature if the creature is small enough to be affected. Pin (DC 15): The animal attempts to grapple and pin a designated creature. Stalk (DC 20): The animal follows a designated creature using the Hide and Move Silently skills to the best of its ability. It stays with the target until you call it off (normally accomplished with a whistle). If attacked by the designated creature, the animal attacks. If attacked by a different creature or severely wounded, the animal attempts to return to you. |
| Jerrick_QueKiri10-16-06, 05:17 PM | @ Iced & Hirumajoe: Sorry about not getting the fight up Sunday, the weather in my area's been really bad and the power went out last night. I'll be running it now. |
| Erithmu10-16-06, 05:19 PM | *sigh* Back to round 2. Don't expect this up any time soon, I still have to go back and kick in the archery duel's healing conditions. *Dumb double sblocks* |
| McJarvis10-16-06, 06:08 PM | Wow...week of delays... @ my gladiators: The fight just took a neat step(one of you died)...posted in it's fulness up to this point. Ex-girlfriend just called to tell me she's in town & we're going out for coffee to catch up on old times while her husband is at some sort of seminar here in the city. Be back in an hour or two to finish the fight. :) |

Ex-girlfriend just called to tell me she's in town & we're going out for coffee to catch up on old times while her husband is at some sort of seminar here in the city. Be back in an hour or two to finish the fight. :) No worries, take your time :). Three things I noticed. First, I can make a concentration check to suppress the display of Force Screen. It's not noted anywhere in my tactics, but there's no downside to doing it and I thought it was assumed as a default. Second, I overchanneled that Energy Missiles, which means I take 1d8 damage. Third, I don't know how the badger and Luxt'l got to me so quickly. Not only does it take a move action to pin down the location of a scent, the stairs cost double movement which means they're a bit too far. @Dr. Funk: Sorry bout killing Aero :(. |

(fixed) As far as "getting" to you, they were not tracking you- they just picked a random direction to go when they got to the top of the stairs.(that wasn't them basing you- that was them going their max distance in the approxomate direction of the noise they heard.) I only said they "noted your smell" when they got within 30 ft of you. edit- Wait- I remember now...ViVi was not moving & you were, so I had them follow where more noise was coming from. The only thing that made them approach you so directly is the narrowness of that platform. ps- I'm really enjoying this fight. When you put touchsight up I started whistling a radar sound to set the mood for the subs... :-) |
| Hirumajoe10-16-06, 09:22 PM | @ Iced & Hirumajoe: Sorry about not getting the fight up Sunday, the weather in my area's been really bad and the power went out last night. I'll be running it now. No worries. I generally don't get my own fights done until Monday night myself. Generally due to 2 year old interference, as opposed to electrical. :-) |
| McJarvis10-16-06, 10:04 PM | Perhaps I should have stayed five minutes longer. Next round it was over. If you hadn't had touchsight up you'd be dead. A wins. |
| Zelck10-16-06, 10:12 PM | Perhaps I should have stayed five minutes longer. Next round it was over. If you hadn't had touchsight up you'd be dead. So true... |
| Zevox10-16-06, 11:36 PM | @Zevox and Vath: from "killing fields": You had an issue with this rule: note 'or spell description.' That means that if the spell description says it's a full-round casting time, then so should the SLA. I didn't follow the fight closely enough to see if it would make a difference. Not really - by that point Istima is still up against a 27 hp Dryad with no power points left and only his crossbow, horses, and quarterstaff for damaging potential, none of which is likely to help against thier DR 5/cold iron. If they didn't have that DR it would be important, but as it is all it does is dash my brief hopes of Asran getting use out of Arynat's Commune SLA. Zevox |
| Zelck10-16-06, 11:59 PM | Izumi vs. Ihdald (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10379191&postcount=130) is up. Pretty uneven matchup there. |
| Jerrick_QueKiri10-17-06, 12:03 AM | @ Iced and Hirumajoe: I'm terribly sorry, but I will be unable to have your fight up tonight. However, I will get it up tomorrow after my classes. Again, I'm sorry for this inconvenience. |
| Zelck10-17-06, 12:08 AM | A wins. To double-check, Andurwin should get 1500+500+500=2500 xp, and 2500*1.06=2650gp, right? Luxt'l should get 1000 xp and 1060gp, and Vivi should get 500 xp and 533 gp? |
| Zevox10-17-06, 12:30 AM | To double-check, Andurwin should get 1500+500+500=2500 xp, and 2500*1.06=2650gp, right? Luxt'l should get 1000 xp and 1060gp, and Vivi should get 500 xp and 533 gp? Close - no need to use the ratio for a fight in the same league (introduces rounding errors). Andurwin gets 1,500 + 500 + 500 = 2,500 xp and 1,600 + 533 + 533 = 2,666 gp. Luxt'l similarly gets 1,000 xp and 1,066 gp. Zevox |

By my calculations: Andurwin Wins & Gains 2,500xp/2,666gp (1,500+500+500 // 1,600+533+533) Luxt'l comes in second & gains 1,000xp/1,066gp (533+533) ViVi comes in last & gains 500xp/533gp edit- Hum...my calcs seem to be off. What gives? double edit- nevermind...why do they even list xp:gp ratios if they are suffering from round-off error so badly? |
| Erithmu10-17-06, 12:35 AM | Eraca vs Sunstroke From round 22 due to healing is at this link. Check for errors, and I'll do accounting after I rerun the ECL3 from scratch. Or one of you guys could do it. Rolls are in the same place if you would like to check them. |
| Zevox10-17-06, 12:40 AM | Eraca vs Sunstroke From round 22 due to healing is at this link. Check for errors, and I'll do accounting after I rerun the ECL3 from scratch. Or one of you guys could do it. Rolls are in the same place if you would like to check them. Well, my one comment is that I did ask to restore Blur if it fell from my scroll. Round 36 would've been an ideal time to do that. But since I doubt heavily it would matter (after failing both shields and drawing Mr. deflect arrows at the worst possible time I doubt anything could save Eraca here), I won't ask for an edit for that. Thanks for the run. *sigh* Now, if only Eraca would stop losing battles just before she was going to hit Great Reknown one of these days... this is the second time thats happened now (first was with her first loss, to Daisy). Oh well, I guess once she finishes her next crafting stint she'll just have to make up for it. Zevox |
| Macbrea10-17-06, 12:50 AM | On a lighter note. Izumi just made ECL 6. :P |
| Erithmu10-17-06, 01:39 AM | Personals: Pitlord seeking rules on how Grappling on top of a mount works. Links appreciated. |
| Etiquette_Gnome10-17-06, 01:42 AM | The ruling can be found in the Meta-rules section (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=7019084) Grappling while mounted: If you grapple someone who is mounted, you join him on the mount, or - if the mount cannot carry both of you - you are grappling your opponent adjectent to it (the mount gets an AoO unless the attacker has the Improved Grapple feat). If the mount decides to move, the rider falls off unless he wins an opposed grapple check against the attacker in which case he drags him along. |
| Erithmu10-17-06, 01:53 AM | Yea found it ... Reversal in Kon + Durin vs Cara + Zax check for errors, rewards for both my fights in the morning. when I'm awake. |
| TelinArtho10-17-06, 02:16 AM | I don't have time to do a full review of it - but the poison save in round 8 is still missing at the least - and it looks like you are having Food grapple for damage rather than grapple to pin (which since you have all my pets attacking different targets - I suppose is to my advantage - but not the way I intended them to be used). Also - one little nit I notice is that while Zax is making handle animal checks - Kon is making none and more importantly can actually fail his checks with only a +7. This makes a big difference in the location of things since Valdorn would not have based Net from the get go. Of course, I am not asking for further edits if it would press you too much for time - but I always would rather see things according to the tactics written - even if it means a loss on my end. Thanks for taking the time to edit in the first place. |
| Maraxus10-17-06, 08:03 AM | Yea found it ... Reversal in Kon + Durin vs Cara + Zax check for errors, rewards for both my fights in the morning. when I'm awake. Bahhh I don't like this a lot! Could I ask for another rerun? My tactics were not followed at all, neither my clear target priority, nor my choise who to trip attack and who to attack for damage (nor did anything say to put away my guisame. And you forgot my attack bonus for being on higher ground. Who knows, maybe another set of rolls brings us luck this time. ...No seriously, because it's Tuesday, I accept it as it is. |
| Etiquette_Gnome10-17-06, 09:56 AM | Will I need to wait until I get rewards for the fight to update my character to make him ready for this week? |
| bgt10-17-06, 10:06 AM | @McJarvis- Regarding the Andurwin (Zelck) vs. Vivi (Dr.Funk) vs. Luxt'l (bgt) fight, you forgot to include the 7 overchannel damage in Andurwin's HP. That, plus the 17 damage from my scorching ray adds up to 24 damage. As Andurwin only has 22 hp, he would go down and Luxt'l would come in first. Please correct this soon. Also, it would be nice if you hyperlinked the three portions of the fight together. Despite the mistake, you did a fine job pitlording the fight. :) |
| Hirumajoe10-17-06, 10:10 AM | Reginald Molehusband vs The Unknown Monster (aka the Mimic) is up here. |
| Erithmu10-17-06, 10:13 AM | @Telin: I will remember that for next time, It has just been a very busy weekend for some reason. I think I also thought the fight was going to be a bit easier to run, but I didn't realize there were a total of 5 pets and a merc in the fight when I picked it up. @Maraxus: You had to fight your way through everything in order to get to target #1. The Pets, merc, and rogue were all more immediate threats than the druid, (who actually didn't do much, his animal companion did.) I did give you higher ground on every attack I just didn't spell it out (+5 on sheet +6 in roller) @EG: rewards comming nowish ... I just woke up EDIT: done EDIT2: So are the rewards for Eraca and Sunstroke |
| Highfire10-17-06, 10:17 AM | To my players - I will be running the last two fights today. Jerrick_QueKiri: Sorry but this is as long as I can wait, I'll be running with improvised, or default tactics. ~Justin |
| hogarth10-17-06, 10:18 AM | Reginald Molehusband vs The Unknown Monster (aka the Mimic) is up here. Looks fine to me except for the rewards. Due to recent changes to the skill rules, Reginald qualifies for the "Political Career" skill package which automatically increases his rewards by 29% (+18 Dipl., +11 K (nobil.)) so his reward should be 1200 * (1 - 0.25 + 0.29) = 1248 gp/xp. |

I just woke up In case you needed help working out the percentages, here's the net: Kon and Durin lose 25% each for their allies and gain back 12.5% from Carandol and 25% from Zax for a net bonus of 12.5% Carandol loses 0% for his ally (forgery) and gains back 12.5% from each of Kon and Durin for a net change of 0% Zax loses 25% for his allies and gains back 12.5% from each of Kon and Durin for a net change of 0% Zax gains 900xp/gp. Carandol gains 900xp+25% = 1125xp/gp and spends 100gp for Barak. Kon and Durin gain 300xp + 12.5%= 337xp/337gp. |
| Erithmu10-17-06, 10:48 AM | @Telin: Got it wrong the first time, fixed now. |
| Hirumajoe10-17-06, 10:52 AM | Looks fine to me except for the rewards. Due to recent changes to the skill rules, Reginald qualifies for the "Diplomatic Career" skill package which automatically increases his rewards by 29% (+18 Dipl., +11 K (nobil.)) so his reward should be 1200 * (1 - 0.25 + 0.29) = 1248 gp/xp. Sorry about that, completely forgot about it. I'll go correct it. General suggestion to those in charge: Remove the Mimic from the ECL 4 monster list. 10' movement just doesn't cut it. |
| Stormwind10-17-06, 10:55 AM | @Macbrea: Thanks for running the fight, however there is one matter I would like to bring up. The rewards are incorrect. Varjo is ECL7. That means that her maxCA is 5 (ECL-2). Thus with her CR3 ally, her ally penalty is CA/maxCA*25=3/5*25=15% Thus rewards for the fight should be: Kihmahri: +805xp, +995gp Varjo: +1785xp, +2210gp |
| TelinArtho10-17-06, 10:59 AM | @Telin: Got it wrong the first time, fixed now. No problem - I saw that it was slightly off and expected you would see the error quickly. I'm actually pretty lucky that Zax advanced this week, otherwise he was going to either have to do without an animal companion or deal with pushing his new one for the first few weeks... Next week I'll actually have 2 characters active: Kraegin still crafting ( 2more weeks) and Zax training (3 weeks) and eventually crafting (another week). Of course with more changes coming down the pike for allies - Zax may or may not be as powerful in upcoming weeks. |

The notation is essentially meant to show that his normal max is 19 & the temporary hp from vigor don't come back. He took 7 damage, which is what took him down to 22 hp. |

| Highfire10-17-06, 01:27 PM | Hmmm, I will not make the deadline for my last fight. I wasn;t thinking GMT. My last fight one of the people did not send tactics, can I have him forfeit maybe? Anyway Magister vs. Papapeperoni should be up shortly. ~Justin |
| Macbrea10-17-06, 01:30 PM | If he hasn't sent tactics and he has no default tactics on the character sheet. You are allowed to surrender the fight. Your not required to ad hoc the entire set of tactics based off what the character looks like it would do. Normally, what would happen if you have a huge amount of time is you are suppose to go back through all the fights the guy did and see if you could decipher what his base tactics would be. |

| Macbrea10-17-06, 01:31 PM | It is the reason there is a deadline for when tactics need to be sent to the pitlord. There is no way you are expected to run mutliple fights, in which noone sends you tactics. :P |

| Macbrea10-17-06, 01:58 PM | Oh, Highfire.. by the way. you can take as many free actions in a turn as your DM allows. Actions: Full Actions = full turn Standard action = 1 per turn Move action = 1 per turn unless you give up your standard action then you may take 2 Swift action = 1 per turn Free action = as many as reasonable per turn Example: dropping an item is a free action. But dropping 200 items 1 at a time may be judged as requiring more time then a single round allows. |

Papa's not going to like it (not prebuffing his warhorse hurt him a lot), but that how you learn to set up your sheet correctly, I guess. A monk with 10 strength just has to take advantage of what he can to win, you know? That's been Rubicanti's style since day 1. I actually dislike being confined to the Arena map (though I understand the reasoning behind the decision). Terrain is a monk's best friend, really; balance, tumble, jump, climb, move silently, hide, and swim are all class skills. I think they're even better map specialists than rangers. Viva la monk scout! And DING! to level 4! TM |
| Hirumajoe10-17-06, 06:36 PM | Anything I should be doing other than PMing Pitlords to get the Reginald Molehusband vs the Unknown Monster (aka the Mimic) listed done on time instead of late, considering it was finished last night and corrected this morning around 11 am (which should be in time for the deadline I thought)? Thanks, Hirumajoe |
| hogarth10-17-06, 06:59 PM | No, that's all you need to do (although for a quicker response sometimes it's just as useful to e-mail Caterane instead of Pitlords). He probably just overlooked it. | Caterane10-17-06, 07:03 PM | My last fight one of the people did not send tactics, can I have him forfeit maybe? ~Justin Please add the sheets to this fight! |
| lonewolf10-17-06, 07:14 PM | Perius vs Morathor is finally up. 2 rather major oversights made the difference. |
| MindWandererB10-17-06, 07:19 PM | Random query of Rith: @MWB: found your broken tag: Take off the quotes around "coward" in your psi crystal sblock.Broken tag? What? What browser are you using? It opens fine for me in Firefox as well as IE. |
| MindWandererB10-17-06, 07:23 PM | Perius vs Morathor is finally up. 2 rather major oversights made the difference. Except that the grapple is done wrong. A griffon can't get multiple attacks in a grapple like that. It can: 1) Attack with one natural weapon at a -4 penalty (as a light weapon), or 2) Use its grapple modifier in an opposed grapple check to do unarmed strike damage (1d4+Str for a Large creature). Since its BAB is greater than 5, it can get an iterative attack this way (one at +15 and one at +10). |
| lonewolf10-17-06, 07:40 PM | Actually he can do 1 plus the rake attacks and thats just what he did. |
| MindWandererB10-17-06, 08:26 PM | Actually he can do 1 plus the rake attacks and thats just what he did. Rake! I need more sleep. |
| Ravashack10-17-06, 08:28 PM | Perius vs Morathor is finally up. 2 rather major oversights made the difference. Ugh. I keep missing the pet items, and it's kind of annoying at this point--the only thing I saw stats written up for was for the psicrystal. Although I'm kicking myself more for missing Deflect Arrows. |
| Erithmu10-17-06, 10:36 PM | Random query of Rith: Broken tag? What? What browser are you using? It opens fine for me in Firefox as well as IE. I have seen this on more than one occasion: Sometimes when a pitlord removes some of the non fight important stuff off your sheet, it comes out looking like there is a broken tag. See Here It is due to the quotes around coward |
| Pittbull10-18-06, 03:29 AM | Perius vs Morathor is finally up. 2 rather major oversights made the difference. Thanks for running the fight! Leaving the griffon at 3 HPs, rises one question. Since the figurine has a duration of 6 hours and the griffon wasn't killed. Does the Nimbus restore his Hps? Then it could be used in the next fight too.... |

| Highfire10-18-06, 10:58 AM | Please add the sheets to this fight! Done (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=10383854&postcount=135). Sorry about that didn't think it was needed ~Justin |
| Caterane10-18-06, 11:43 AM | What's with Aerryl + Chameleon vs monsters? |
| lonewolf10-18-06, 11:54 AM | It seems like Vath is still working on it. *sigh* |
| Vathelokai10-18-06, 12:16 PM | Just finished. Posting rewards now. It remains a loss, but it got very close (sort of.). |
| lonewolf10-18-06, 12:25 PM | Just finished. Posting rewards now. It remains a loss, but it got very close (sort of.). I see several major problems on first glance(Ogre mage attacking and going invisible in the same round all the time???) but I think Im going to stop bothering, since I dont think I want to wait another week. :pbbbtt: |
| Vathelokai10-18-06, 12:33 PM | I see several major problems on first glance(Ogre mage attacking and going invisible in the same round all the time???) but I think Im going to stop bothering, since I dont think I want to wait another week. :pbbbtt: Ogre mage has invisibility at will, so once per round as a free action she can become invis, which she does at the end of her turn (usually). I've got a little time before logging off, if you see anything specific to fix. |

I've got a little time before logging off, if you see anything specific to fix. While it may be an "at will" spell like ability - it still requires a standard action to activate - it is not a free action. Otherwise, Gelugons would be exceptionally nasty with at will Ice Storms as free actions... |
| lonewolf10-18-06, 12:37 PM | wrong. Using a spell-like ability is a standart action unless noted otherwise And nothing in the ogre mages description states that he can use invisibility as free action. usable at will only means that there is no limit on the number of times per day he can do that. |
| Vathelokai10-18-06, 12:44 PM | wrong. And nothing in the ogre mages description states that he can use invisibility as free action. usable at will only means that there is no limit on the number of times per day he can do that. :tantrum: |
| lonewolf10-18-06, 12:54 PM | actually after thinking about it I do want the fight to be held over. I really want to win this fight. I will go over it later today and past any other problems I have with it, but Ogre mage-invisibility is the most important that will change a good deal of things. |
| Vathelokai10-18-06, 01:01 PM | Ok, I looked back over the rolls and the fight changed round 21 - sneak attack vs ogre because it's still visible (instead of dragon)... does 12 damage, not enough to down the ogre. on round 22, the ogre goes invis instead of attacking. After round 25, the ogre remains visible. This dosn't change any of the attacks except the very last one, which misses. But the dragon did enough that round to kill Chameleon anyway. Tacticly, Chameleon could have refocused on the ogre, but it would have restarted the ogre's tactic to flee when near 1/3 hp. It would have given the dragon some extra attacks, and CDG with the dragon sitting on the sleeping ogre wouln't have worked too well anyway. My sincire and repeated appologies for this fight. I must be going to bed now. I have to go to work in 4 hours :raincloud |
| lonewolf10-18-06, 01:09 PM | Another very important and probably fight changing mistake: The last spot vs Hide check I see in that fight is in round 16. If you just assume that they fail their checks and attack only the square pinpointed by the dragons blindsense, The chameleon has full concealment which means 2 things: 50% miss chance(which you did) and no AoO against The Chameleon(which you didnt) |
| MindWandererB10-18-06, 02:04 PM | <sigh> I don't suppose you two can hurry this up? Aerryl would have levelled this week, win or lose, but she didn't because of the hold-over. And now another? I'd like to be able to use her at ECL 10 for a guild thing next week, which I can't do unless she either wins or gets another fight. |
| lonewolf10-18-06, 02:10 PM | sorry pal, but in the quite few fights until he is frozen, I want The Chameleon to built up a bit of a powerrating and losing against Monsters really screws that. But unless Im mistaken, you could do the Guild stuff anyway if your fight is held over. That has happened before with little Daisy and I believe someone else too. |

Unfortunately, her ECL matters in this case. |
| Zelck10-18-06, 02:22 PM | You know, if we allowed people to use their full activity gained as a result of a held over fight to get loser awards appropriate for their ECL (those awards don't affect the held over fight), these kinds of conflicts may be avoided. This full activity may only be used during a held-over fight. Kind of makes a held-over fight hurt less for people who don't have any full activities they can use. |
| Macbrea10-18-06, 02:28 PM | Heh, it would unbalance characters too quickly. Izumi has been held over about once every 3 fights. At her current rate, she would be rich! |
| Zelck10-18-06, 02:31 PM | Loser awards include XP :P. We would run into any WBL problems. However, I did realize something. It gives an incentive for people who are weaker at lower levels to hold fights over to get "free" XP. So maybe only those who didn't request the rerun would get to use this loser award full activity. This means team fights can have one person collaborate with other teammates so only one person takes the "penalty" and everyone else can get the full activity. But I doubt that'll come up too much, and it doesn't seem to be a huge issue anyway compared to the conflict of interest we see in team fights now where one person wants to hold it over and the other doesn't. |
| Hirumajoe10-18-06, 02:46 PM | I don't see how its "free" xp. They could have always surrendered at the start if they're that weak and gotten the exact amount of xp/gp in the same amount of time. All it gets them is free power rating. Which only affects one thing, cohorts. Since I don't really care much about my character's power rating, I may start putting in a clause that says: Valen surrenders if you don't have enough time to finish the fight. The only usable full activity that Valen can take is craft a bow (which he doesn't need at this point, and with only 350 gp would only take a free action anyways) or train an animal 2 tricks, which he doesn't need either. I personally would rather see a solid continuous progression over the weeks rather than holding over which equals zero progression with a chance of advancement. For a 1 week hold over for a 50/50 chance of triple payout is the exact same advancement on average as 2 losses in that same time period. |

This full activity may only be used during a held-over fight. Kind of makes a held-over fight hurt less for people who don't have any full activities they can use. Um, this rule already exists. It's just a lot less common than you'd think to be able to take advantage of a full activity. Misread the comment, sorry. I argued for this once before. I forget why I lost, but others seem to have a good idea. |
