Fights of the Week: September 20th

Sheets
Deadline for editing characters sheets is 21:00 CET.
Central European Time (http://wwp.centraleuropeantime.eu/) shows the time.
Please don't edit the sheet after the deadline or you will lose the match. Currently, the deadline has passed

Rules of Gladius
All that you need to know is written in the Rules of Gladius.
It could be useful also to give a look to the Court Decisions part 1 and part 2.
Please do not make fake accounts or insult the Elders.

Pairings
GM Caterane will pair the active Characters of Gladius after the deadline.
Make sure that your character is not in Prison (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=571107&goto=lastpost).

Pitlording
You should use the CoCo Dice Roller (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com) for the fight.
If you need, there is a nice Template ready to use that will help.
You could find very useful the Battle Map Tag Generator (http://www.hwx.it/coco) for dynamic Maps, You must post a link to your fight in this thread when it is complete.
Other useful links are Skills and Feats, Quick Access tables for XP and Gold.

Recent News and Developments
(From our Illustrious Prisonlord)
1. In an effort to start seeing red prison violations fixed in a more timely fashion, effective with the roll call for the week ending September 16th (next week), a new policy will go into effect. Players will now be given a maximum of four weeks from the time they receive a red violation in which to fix this violation. If it is not fixed by the end of that 4 week period, that player will have all characters they run except the one of the lowest ECL placed in prison until the issue is fixed. The player will only be allowed to have that single character active as long as the violation remains unfixed. If there are more than one character to choose from at the lowest ECL of characters on the roster for the player, one will be chosen at random by me to leave active. Characters that are currently in prison as of this roll call will be given two weeks beyond today (i.e. roll call for week ending Sept 23rd) in which to fix their errors, or all of their characters except one will be subject to inprisonment.

2. As I discussed in the Tavern, I am adding some more mandatory skills to the default character sheet. There are now three additional mandatory skills: Balance, Climb and Jump. All players will have until pairings on September 20th (approx 10 days from today) in which to update their character sheets with these new mandatory skills. As of September 20th, any character sheet not reflecting these skills is subject to violation reporting for this reason.

Comments & Concerns

We have a big problem. The webcrawler cannot, for some reason, get the title lines. The following comes up:
League 3 (46 gladiators)
no character post found for Ikhain al-Habari (Abyssal Stalker)
no character post found for Joanni (Anaconda)
no character post found for Nathas Barrirret (Blazinghand)
no character post found for Lantash the Ancient (bluemage55)
no character post found for Cyrus (c00lz3)
no character post found for Wisp (c00lz3)
no character post found for Reinard Blueriver (DirewolfX)
no character post found for Azhran Deathstakler (DocNessumo)
no character post found for Saunginel (DocNessumo)
no character post found for Yilmaz (Dracazar)
no character post found for Elegost (Dr.Funk)
no character post found for Dudael Angelus (DSugui)
no character post found for Carandol Mornenion (Etiquette_Gnome)
no character post found for Fnorri the Miser (False_Keraptis)
no character post found for Gundmir Guldesdep (False_Keraptis)
no character post found for Valen Sky (Hirumajoe)
no character post found for Reginald Molehusband (hogarth)

etc etc

I suppose that has something to do with the new way how (post) tags link not to a single post but open the whole thread. I don't know why WotC did that change (it's not even a week old) but it takes infinitely longer now to open a post since it always loads the whole thread. To make it short: I don't have the time to do that. Neither today nor in the future.

I'll write a PM to WotC and ask them to change it back and hopefully they react to that. If anyone is crazy enough to retrieve all 156 title lines and post them here I roll pairings; else we have to skip a week. Or two.

I'll do the ECL 5-9 - someone else pick up 3 and 4 (either 1 or 2 people)

I actually reported this myself a week or so ago. It's a bug and will be corrected, possibly during the downtime tomorrow. Post: 10129018

Judging from past experience, someone will probably volunteer to do this manually. I'll help in about an hour or so if it's not done yet.

I can spare about 20 minutes to get things before I need to break off to bs write a paper. I'll do as much of ECL 3 and 4 as I can in that time (to be edited into this post).

Edit: Skipping over those in prison, on campaigns, or on Guild operations (since the latter are already accounted for).

Edit 2: Added Bolding to active and underlined the one full activity.

@Telin: If you found any crafters, you need to make note of it. I only say this from experience.

We have a big problem. The webcrawler cannot, for some reason, get the title lines. The following comes up:

no character post found for Joanni (Anaconda)
no character post found for Nathas Barrirret (Blazinghand)
no character post found for Lantash the Ancient (bluemage55)
no character post found for Cyrus (c00lz3)
no character post found for Wisp (c00lz3)
no character post found for Reinard Blueriver (DirewolfX)
no character post found for Azhran Deathstakler (DocNessumo)
no character post found for Saunginel (DocNessumo)
no character post found for Yilmaz (Dracazar)
no character post found for Elegost (Dr.Funk)
no character post found for Dudael Angelus (DSugui)
no character post found for Carandol Mornenion (Etiquette_Gnome)

no character post found for Gundmir Guldesdep (False_Keraptis)
no character post found for Valen Sky (Hirumajoe)

I suppose that has something to do with the new way how (post) tags link not to a single post but open the whole thread. Cat,
Posted in the forums bug reports thread a few days ago, and I got a reply recently. This problem was apparently caused by a mistake and it will be corrected when the forums go down later this week for regular maintanence. At least that's what WotC_Mel told us.

Cheers,

I'm glad it's a bug and not a change on purpose.

I go to bed now since it's too late already but if someone retrieves ECL 4 (only one missing) then I will roll pairings tomorow morning.

Thanks to TelinArtho and Zevox for doing this work. I've given each of you a credit.

@ Guildlords - I noticed you missed Indrithia's operation this week. Shes on a covert op to commit arson on the CEF Order of Knights - just got past her interception last week, so all thats left is to roll the hide/MS and calculate damage.

@ Cat - Looks like Telin missed one in ECL 7. Like I said a few posts up, Eraca Moralta's mission finished on time, and I have her set to ready this week. Any chance she could get a monster fight, or at least thrown into the ECL 7 FFA?

@Usurpator & Iced: I had agreed with Iced that he would be running Ikhain's quest. I have nothing against Usurpator running it but I was wishing to do a series of quests and Iced already has offered to run them? If Iced doesn't have time to do that, then I should probably PM Usurpator the same info. I'm just hoping to create an exciting story and was hoping that the same questlord would run the quests and keep the storylin together.

Okay - it seems I am set up to do a total of 5 fights at the moment - one of which is a 4-person team fight. As such - make sure you get your tactics in early.

I'll be sending out tactics as soon as I can.

@ Cat - *frown* So she can't even be tossed into the ECL 7 3-person FFA (don't those count as the same number of credits as a 4-person)? Thats a tad dissapointing.

And the picture is just because its the only one I've ever seen thats fairly close to one of my characters (its from Neverwinter Nights). Her hair would need to be black, eyes a dark violet, and the clothing a mithril chain shirt, but otherwise it looks like I envisioned her. I've never subscribed to the "charisma = physical appearance" theory myself.

@ Abyssal - yeah, I saw that too. Looks like all of the post tags are doing that (though curiously, not the thread ones). Somebody had best report it as a bug.

@ Erithmu - Tactics for Annalina Vale (vs Lantash & Yilmaz) have been PMed. Time to assassinate some do-gooders  .

@ DSugui - Tactics for Destra Stormwind (=> Faelto => War) have been PMed. Its about time she got a shot at another Druid.

@ UserNamer - Tactics for Istima Telarc (vs Andurwin Calathos) have been PMed. Enjoy the PSI exhibition match. :)

And of all the other druids out there you get to pick on possibly the weakest one... Faelto has not been enjoying success in recent weeks - and it would seem that this week is not likely to change that trend.

*shrugs* I'd have taken a team match against Uilo or Daisy too. Its just that Destra hasn't gotten a chance to excercise her hatred for non-evil Druids since her FFA involving Little Daisy way back when, so its been a while since she had such a nice thematic fight. Its almost too good to be true that this time the Druid happens to be her target in a Hunter fight. :)

Anyway, I imagine Faelto will do a lot better once she has her Mystic Theurge levels. I've noticed myself when trying to make one of those that they seem to suffer most at levels five to seven, when they have only 2nd level spells against foes wielding 3rd and 4th level ones. ECL 8+ should be quite fun for her.

Zevox
TelinArtho

09-21-06, 04:16 PM
Yeah - the funny thing is, when I built Faelto - I didn't really have Mystic Theurge in the plans... that only came around level 5 when I realized that she could qualify with a little work.

The build has changed slightly with the addition of Mystic Theurge - but you are right that she won't really come unto her own until level 8 or so.

If neither can do it, you'll probably get tactics from me and Cat in thier place (as thier respective Guildmasters). The only reason the fight is happening is because Bilk was sent to perform this raid before KU announced his pseudo-retirement. I hate to say it, but I do disagree. Torel was actually winning at that rate, admittedly very slowly, but the damage was beating out the healing. I admit that it would take a long while (I highly recommend batch rolling), but it doesn't look like there was any reason to cancel the swarm at that point except to end the fight more quickly (which was not a priority for anyone).

The rolls may give that impression, but as I said, 1d6+1 is not likely to beat 1d8+1 (heck, in your tactics you opted not to use Produce Flame vs the wand without backup, and thats 1d6+4 vs 1d8+1). Famine was taking a while, but he was getting his shots in slowly but surely. It'd take some extraordinary luck to actually beat him before he can down Sinwa and start hacking into Torel.

I'll wait to see what Erithmu says though - if he agrees with you, I suppose I'm stuck.

NiQil and DSugui,

I have both tactics now, and I usually start fights on saturday night, unless my wife wants me to take her out all night drinking and smoking houka's. :pint:

Either way the fight should be finished on sunday. The tactics are streight forward, and I don't predict any super long delays or wars of attrition.

Cheers,

MindWandererB

09-22-06, 05:03 PM
Just FYI, we didn't want to go Produce Flame vs. the wand because the Flame would have been only 4 shots. At the point in the fight where the Swarm was happening, Torel didn't have anything in his repertoire more damaging than that--there wasn't anything with greater damage potential for him to even try. A few lucky damage rolls, unlucky healing rolls, and a failed distraction save or two might just do it. The odds are bad, but the odds in melee are far worse.

But yeah, let's wait to hear from Rith.
Erithmu

09-22-06, 05:03 PM
Guess it is time for me to say something then ...

I will say I am torn: On one hand I would like to see the Summon swarm continued. I would suggest something that was not in my tactics, but that would be poor in form. On the Pitlord side of me, I wouldn't want to run that fight either.

I would like to say that CLW wands have limits, and that summon swarm does not have a limit. (And that stowing wands to switch to bow is a std action.)

I offer this: I leave it in your hands. I personally think I can hold out over Famine, I could be wrong and there are about 3*XX rounds of die rolls between now and then (swarm, fort, heal). Niqil might have something to say about using his wand charges, but as you stated ... it is in his default tactics.
Zevox

09-22-06, 05:12 PM
I would like to say that CLW wands have limits,

Who will take that fight?
Erithmu

09-22-06, 05:20 PM
@Zevox: I know he has 3 of em. (about 100 charges without pulling his sheet up, I want to say 4,49,46). And as I said before: I leave it to Pitlord option.

@Lonewolf: Only the fight that I was not involved in. I mentioned that I needed to send tactics to someone regarding that fight.
TelinArtho

09-22-06, 05:22 PM
Okay - I've got a situation I'm not sure is legal.

If you are mounted, can you have your mount full attack, then 5ft step away, attack yourself (if you have a reach weapon) and then dismount?

Seeing how you use up a move action if your mount is moving - I must presume that if the mount if using a full action - you can't take your standard and move action after it is completely done.

However - with delaying - it might work - I'm not sure.
NiQil

09-22-06, 05:24 PM
A few things....

I have no problem with the use of wand charges. My general tactics are there for a reason. I chose not to put a healing contingency in my tactics so that I was not subjecting a pitlord to a hardline healing level and making his life more trouble than necessary.

@ MWB and Rith: I don't know if this might change your mind or not....but Famine has 3 healing wands....and as I have shown in the past, I have no problem with chewing through all of those charges. I have no problem with running out the swarm tactic, but I have to agree with Zevox in saying that it's purely a matter of time and resources at that point.

Also, Rith stated that it is a standard action to switch back and forth between a bow and the wand...this is incorrect. Drawing it is a free action or move action (depending on whether any additional movement is done), and holding the bow in one hand while having the wand in the other is viable. Stowing the wand is a move action, so I can still stow and fire in the same round if I am not moving.

So...in short...I have no problem running out the swarm...but I don't think the end will change...just the resources used. I expected to lose this fight to begin with, since dealing with two casters is hell for my dwarven tanks, so if that happens to change then I am no worse off than I expected. Winning is just a happy bonus.

Edit: @ Zevox: Assuming nothing changes, results-wise....I think you have the rewards slightly off...a ECL6 win should grant 2000 gp, not 1998 gp. Or am I missing something? I ask because that was the reward received here in a fight of the exact same type last week between Pestilence vs Ihdald Seaslash & Indrithia...so one of the two fights is not quite accurate. It's only two gp, but every little bit helps.

I don't see why not. The mount's actions are seperate from yours.

Seeing how you use up a move action if your mount is moving
Er, you mean you lose one of your move actions if the mount moves? Not to my knowledge you don't. Where did you find this?

Okay - I've got a situation I'm not sure is legal.

If you are mounted, can you have your mount full attack, then 5ft step away, attack yourself (if you have a reach weapon) and then dismount?

Seeing how you use up a move action if your mount is moving - I must presume that if the mount if using a full action - you can't take your standard and move action after it is completely done.

However - with delaying - it might work - I'm not sure.

Why on earth wouldn't it work? Every character (creature) gets its full alotment of actions in a round; the only caveat in the mounted rules that "takes away" actions is the caveat that says that you can't full attack if your mount has moved more than 5' in the round. I'll go look it up...

If your mount moves more than 5', you can only make a single melee attack. Essentially, you have to wait until the mount gets to your enemy before attacking, so you can't make a full attack.
Some stuff about using ranged weaponry while mounted...
Likewise, you can take move actions normally, so that, for instance, you can load and fire a light crossbow in a round while your mount is moving.

It's pretty clear that each member of the team (mount and rider) gets their full compliment of actions in a round no matter what the mount is doing, with the caveat that a full-attack action is not possible for the rider if the mount moves more than 5' (note that not even special stuff like the hustle power can circumvent this, though I'd certainly consider it were I DMing).

So, having my mount full-attack and then 5' step backward completes my mount's actions, and then Tessero can attack (std) and then dismount (move) to end up afoot in any square adjacent to the mount.

Heck, with a high enough Ride check, Tessero could attack (std), fast dismount (Ride DC 20, free), and then move his speed away (move) or draw a powerstone (move) or whatever move action he wishes to take.

Mounts are hella useful for more than damage. They're living walls (and in a battlefield control sort of way, not just in the +4 cover to AC way) that cause damage on the opponent's turn (AoOs).

I plan to cheese the hell outta the rules with Equalizer and his future big brothers (with the exception of the grapple rules. I have some standards...).

I think that this kind of situation has been clarified in the RotG articles about mounted combat. We have to keep in mind that the rider and the mount act as a single unit on the same initiative. Their "round" can't take longer than any other character's "round". I think that it's the same kind of situation, where a horse takes a double move. In this case the rider can use only a standard action, because he doesn't have time to do a full attack anymore.

If the rider wishes to do a move+standard action after the mount has moved, he can't because there isn't time to do that anymore. He might be able to do those things at the same time when the mount attacks, but I think there is no way to do those after that. They must do their actions simultaneously, because they don't have separate initiatives. I think that the key here is that they "act as one combatant".

I'm sorry, Abyssal, but you obviously haven't checked the PHB on this subject.

Likewise, you can take move actions normally, so that, for instance, you can load and fire a light crossbow in a round while your mount is moving.

It even gives this as one example of taking a move action and a standard action while the mount is moving.

If Joe the fighter wants to draw a potion of bull's strength (move) while his mount double moves and then attack with his longsword at the end of the mount's movement, he can do so.

Even so, the situation Telin is uncertain about is even more clear-cut than this: Tessero had his mount, Equalizer full-attack and then 5' step away from Ventr. After Ventr's 5' step, Tessero attacked with his guisarme (std) and then dismounted (move). This all happened at the same initiative count of the round.

How is it any different from the mount full-attacking, 5' stepping back, and then Tessero drawing a potion and attacking? It has to happen in SOME order; why not the one I specified?

If the horse and rider charge, which creature makes the attack first? They both arrive at the same time, they both reach the target at the same time, and they can both attack. The answer is: whichever one you WANT to attack first can attack first. They both act on the same initiative count as one creature.

And one creature can 5' step in between the attacks in its full attack action.

No, I didn't check. :) I didn't say that you can't take a move action when the mount moves, that is perfectly OK and this is the way it is clarified in the RotG. But you can't do those things after the mount has moved. Check the articles and you'll notice that ranged attacks, for example, must be made on a specific point of movement. So that they are happening at the same time.

In the case of a charge, it is also clear. They both attack at the same time (allthough it must be for technical reasons determined that the other happens "first"). This is a side-effect of the rule-based system. Everything in a single round is happening at the same time. The initiative system is only a technical thing. For example a battle with 3 combatants taking 10 rounds takes only one minute, not three.

In the case of Tessero, the way I see things is this:
-Equalizer full attacks (full round action)
-Equalizer steps back (free)
-Tessero doesn't have time on their combined round to act after a full-round action, but needs to act on the same time as his mounts action goes. If he is allowed to commit a standard and a move action after the mount, their actions take effectively two rounds. He could probably do a standard action after the horse, because that is usuall allowed in the rules for mounted combat, but not both move and a standard action. Just like you are not allowed to do a full attack after the mounts movement.

The main problem here is that Tessero wants to act after Equalizer, not together with it.

Let me riddle you this:

A cleric is getting stomped by a horse and rider that are adjacent to him. He 5' steps back to cast a healing spell on himself.

On the other's turn, the rider pokes the cleric with his lance, readies his shield, and urges his horse to attack. The horse 5' steps closer and full-attacks.

Alternatively, the rider urges his horse to attack, the horse 5' steps closer and full attacks, and the rider pokes the cleric with his longsword and readies his shield.

What is the difference?

I don't see one.

The difference is that the actions must be made from different positions. The first thing would happen in two different squares, but the all of the second happens in the same square. If they happen in different squares, they must be happening after each other. If they happen in the same square, they are happening at the same time.
TheMagister

09-23-06, 04:59 AM
Man, that's bogus, too!

A fighter with a +6/+1 BAB can make an attack, drop a foe, and 5' step in the middle to attack another. The square you're in makes no difference at all.

Edit: I'd go look up the RotG articles, but they're blocked by my work firewall.
TheMagister

09-23-06, 05:05 AM
Another good example:

Some months ago, the DnD Fight Club article came up with a fun monster idea; an Ettin Sorcerer.

One head would fight, the other head would cast. This is a perfect example of a single creature that has two creatures' worth of actions that must take place on the same initiative count.

A mount/rider combo should act in exactly the same fashion, with the one caveat; if the mount moves more than 5' in a round, the rider cannot full attack.

That's the only restriction. To add more is not in agreement with the RAW.
Abyssal Stalker

09-23-06, 05:47 AM
I have to read through the RotG articles, once I get the time to do that. What I have stated here are how I have understood the rules and of course I might be also wrong. Somehow the whole full attack+move+attack+dismount just seems to give the character too much actions. I have to check this more carefully from the rules.

Re: Mounted Combat

The confusion stems from the fact that the horse took a full round action.

The PHB gives several examples in which the mount takes a move then a standard or a standard and then a move and explains specifically when the rider's full round action (or standard action + move) occurs.

It is my opinion based upon those examples that when the mount takes a full round action, the rider's actions must occur *during* the full round action of the mount. Resolve the rider's full round action immediately before or after the mount's action. Resolve his standard + move, in the order performed, before AND after the mount's full action.

Thus in the fight there would be no time for even a 5' step, because the rider's round has already passed.

That is my theory, I will check to see if it is correct later.

If it is possible for the rider to hold his action until after the mount's initiative (even if the mount has to hold in the following round to get them back in sync), all this gets thrown out the window and the action, as it occurs in the fight, becomes possible again.

Edit: Supporting Examples (the following are full round actions for the mount)If the mount is running (quadruple speed), you can cast a spell when your mount has moved up to twice its speedYou can use ranged weapons while your mount is running (quadruple speed), at a –8 penalty. In either case, you make the attack roll when your mount has completed half its movement.I found no further examples of full round mount actions, however it sounds like the example above (Full mount attack, 5' step, rider attack, rider dismount) falls under the rules for riding an intelligent mount, or riding as a passenger on a vehicle, where the rider holds a separate initiative from the mount and acts separately.

Thus, my opinion agrees with Abyssal.

Mounted combat is very powerfull. But it also has potent limitations.

The most important of the limitations is that a mount's actions and a riders actions must be happening at the same time. This total amount of time must fit into a single round of combat. I ask that everyone recall that a character gets 6 seconds of actions in a round. So if you are mounted, and your mount full attacks (6 seconds) then 5' steps (0 sec) then you attack (3sec standard action) then dismount (3sec move action) you have produced a sequence of actions that is infact 12 seconds long. This cannot possibly fit into a single round of combat.

The issue is that while the mount performs a full action, the rider must also perform his full action at the same time in the same location. The above sequence of actions has the rider "holding" his actions till after the mount is done with a full attack. If you allow the rider to take his actions after the mount it is effectively giving the rider his own initiative. This is not allowed. What actually ahppens is that the riderr wastes his actions waiting around for the horse to finish a full attack.

In this situation what would be allowed is for the rider to quick dismount (free action dc 20 ride check), then the mount can full attack and the rider can do whatever he wants with his round. Or the rider can normal dismount and both himself and the horse can use standard actions seperately.

In order to bring a merc into the fight you need to add him to your pre-buff section of your character sheet. This is so your opponent knows you are bringing a merc and can write tactics accordingly. This rule applies to all allies that you have- familiars, psi-crystals, mercs, animal companions, handle-animal/diplomacy allies, etc.

Other concerns:

Round 2-

I don't think Prescience, Offensive would have changed the result of the fight- but I could be wrong...(even if you hit when you missed, I would still be alive)

As far as round 6 is concerned-

As it stands I did 2x damage on the first crit(hit) and 1x damage on the second(missed)

It looks like the Pittlord rolled 6 rolls for the two criticals I did on you:

1 attack roll - crit
1 crit confirm - miss
1 crit confirm - hit

1 attack roll - crit
1 crit confirm - miss
1 crit confirm - miss

He was only supposed to do 1 confirm for each crit. However, since CoCo preserves dice rolls(and the order they were rolled in..) this translates to:

1 attack roll - crit
1 crit confirm- miss

1 attack roll- crit
1 crit confirm- hit

2 missed crit confirms thrown reserved for "later in the fight"- but there is no "'later in the fight"...

Which makes for a 1x damage hit and a 3x damage hit, rather than the current 2x damage hit and 1x damage hit.

More damage to the losing player = same result.

As far as changing tactics for future- I feel you on that one. I feel like every fight I play I always forget some critical strategy that I should have done. In this battles case- I included pretty much no back-up tactics if you were firing a crossbow at me. Fortunately my standard tactics for dealing with energy ray worked out well.

The proper procedure would have been to mention in your pre-buff that you have a possibility of having a merc. As it is, I had no idea you even had a merc until tactics were already posted.
edit- OR message your opponent and update them on the change of situation.

Thanks!

My point was that he rolled 4 crit confirms total when he was supposed to only roll 2 total. The order of the crit confirms was "Miss, Hit, Miss, Miss". The situation only called for 2 crit confirms, so the ones you keep are "Miss, Hit" and if the fight had continued the two misses would have been used later.

Looks pretty good to me. Only problems I see are Annalina attacking Lantash at 2 range increments instead of 1, and that Yilmaz couldn't draw his wand without first unequipping his shield (its heavy, so he can't hold the wand in that hand) or unlocking his gauntlet and stowing/dropping his lance. Round 7

If you are able to take only a standard action or a move action on your turn, you can still charge, but you are only allowed to move up to your speed (instead of up to double your speed). You can’t use this option unless you are restricted to taking only a standard action or move action on your turn.
I for some reason believe I've read that you can ready a "partial charge" as long as you don't take a move equivalent action on your turn, but I'm not sure where I saw it. Maybe the FAQ?

Perhaps, but that then would depend on Yilmaz's position as to whether he could charge or not. His speed is only 40', so if hes further than that, he can't do it.

Of course the point is moot, since if he can't charge with the readied action he'll just do so when his turn comes along that round.

The "you can charge when limited to a standard or move action in a round" is for conditions like those caused by the slow spell, and for the disabled condition, and for creatures like zombies (for example).

I had always understood that it was not a voluntary thing, but a concession to those afflicted with (or limited to) slow movement.

I may have to turn this fight over for someone else to run, due to myself running out of time I could run it. @Macbrea: Check past tactics for guidelines. Since none of them sent tactics, a draw or default loss isn't working. Zevox sent for EHTC, then use the last tactics as guidelines for Dameon. Or do whatever you think is best.

The "you can charge when limited to a standard or move action in a round" is for conditions like those caused by the slow spell, and for the disabled condition, and for creatures like zombies (for example).

I had always understood that it was not a voluntary thing, but a concession to those afflicted with (or limited to) slow movement.

TM
This is exactly right. The term "partial charge" was dropped from the conversion to 3.5, but it always applied when you simply weren't allowed to take a full-round action.

@Abyssal Stalker - I note that you have started the fight with Osiris, Farig and Sali Kan. I want to point out that Osiris is a humanoid (Human) and cannot cast Alter Self to take the form of a salamander because it is an Outsider.

Also - Farig is too big to move through the sewer grates unhindered - and that is the reason why I specified avoiding them in my tactics. Farig has to go through the center area - just staying out of the sludge in the direct middle.

Vivi Ornitier (Dr. Funk) vs Ivan Banai (ayyiniwindryder) is up.

I have a question that (to me) seems pretty cut and dried, but I need some wisdom.

Are touch spells share-able with familiars?

I quoted the above battle because that could've been a devastating tactic for Vivi:
1) cast (and share) invisibility with familiar. cast (and share) shocking grasp with familiar. Move (while invisible) to base contact with Ivan.

2) familiar moves into Ivan's space (still within 5' of Vivi, so spells are still functioning) and touches Ivan. Vivi touches Ivan. Ivan takes 8d6 electrical damage. Rinse/repeat.

Why doesn't that work?

TM
TelinArtho

09-25-06, 02:41 PM
@TM - that's actually what Vivi did.

Touch spells aren't "shareable" - but if the wizard/sorcerer is high enough level they can specify the familiar as the "toucher" of a touch spell as long as the familiar is within reach.

The downside is that Vivi can't cast another spell until the familiar successfully touches Ivan - hence the reason why the dagger came out.

I don't know where you are getting 8d6 damage though - the familiar wouldn't be able to dive with the touch spell.

Hmm, I think that your interpretation is closer to Rules as Written, but I have really problems finding a good reason to negate this action in a table top game... It seems fair to me to allow a ready charge with half normal movement capability.
TheMagister

@TM - that's actually what Vivi did.

Touch spells aren't "shareable" {snip}

That's what I wanted to know. If (for example) a shocking grasp spell could be shared with a familiar.

Visions of a 3rd level alpha-strike type character were flashing through my head (1 shocking grasp on caster, 1 on familiar (shared), 1 on spectral hand = 3 shocks for the price of 2).

TM
MindWandererB

09-25-06, 02:48 PM
He's getting 8d6 because he's having the familiar deliver one "copy," and Vivi another. You only get one copy. Remember, touch spells target whatever you damage, not yourself. if you "shared" Shocking Grasp, you'd be zapping yourself, and generously allowing your familiar to share in the pain.

@TM: I usually don't bother agreeing with people unless I have something to add. If someone else gives the right answer, there's no reason for me to speak up unless there's some kind of debate. It's not that I always think you're wrong!

Well, the reason why I specified it the way I did was kind of a built-in delay in my tactics. Since I had no hope of getting to my opponents before they buffed - I wanted to give them a chance to find each other before I closed.

It should only make a difference of a round or two in any case though.

@Paritial Charge: I'm doing it unless you can convince me with proof text. I run it in table top games, Yilmaz was 45 ft away and was able to hit with his lance reach:

@Heavy shield: I don't think it was ever equiped in my mental picture: I had 2H lance damage all the way, So I'm sure he could ready the shield at the end, but it is kind of a moot point anyways. It would mean lower AC for Yilmaz, but I don't think it affects anything as he wasn't attacked till he was de-horsed.

@Scale: Scale is lucky that he is even in the fight. I'll try to be nice here, but this might come out mean: Lantesh does not meet the Code for the 3FC. For all useful purposes he should be in prison. Scale was not prebuffed. To be honest I have legitamate grounds to not allow Lantesh in the fight. I WILL NOT rerun this fight with Scale following Yilmaz around; Pitlord option as stated in the CoCo rules.

@Zevox: For the invisible attack I don't think you would have been able to make the attack any closer. Next round Yilmaz would have been between Anna and Lantesh. Erithmu

09-25-06, 04:07 PM
Interleagues normally work out to a win or loss against their respective ECLs in terms of rewards. So whatever team wins gets winners rewards of their ECL and whoever loses gets their ECL rewards. This is due to how the break down of the XP system works.

Also has anyone picked up KU's FFA on the plains fight? Or is it going to get held over?

TelinArtho

It is the latter.

I always use the CoCo roller with an appropriately named session (usually the names of the characters and a description of the map upon which it is located).

I do not provide coordinates usually - as most of the maps don't have them and using the CoCo Mapper is still "inconsistent for me." If there is a specific movement concern you'd like addressed, let me know.

This is due to how the break down of the XP system works.I don't think this is the case. You should look up on the table to see how much XP a character of your ECL should get for an opponent of the appropriate CR, and either divide or multiply by 2 as appropriate for the number of folks on each side. Sometimes it's the same as a fight of your ECL, but sometimes it's not.

Well, its allowed for a mounted combatant to wield a lance in one hand; but you're right, Yilmaz has his damage listed as though its two handed. Which means he should probably notate his AC different to represent the difference between using his shield and not.

@Zevox: For the invisible attack I don't think you would have been able to make the attack any closer. Next round Yilmaz would have been between Anna and Lantesh. *shrugs* Its not fight-affecting, so I won't argue, but I felt it was worth noting since it didn't seem she gained anything by making the attack early and I did ask to be in one range increment when it was made. Having no map or coordinates I couldn't tell much of where Yilmaz would be or anything of the sort, though personally I'd have prefered if she were manuevered to get the circumstances she wanted, since it would be easy seeing as how she outpaces her foes and has a good MS. Thats a difference in pitlording styles most likey though.

In any event, thanks again for running it, and for adressing the concerns.

Its an island, and you can indeed jump to it and climb the statue. Its not an entirely uncommon tactic either; even those who don't climb the statue sometimes jump to it just to make melee harder on foes.

@ Usernamer (Re: Istima vs Andurwin) - As Zelck said, the result was expected, but the fight is very difficult to follow. No map, coordinates, or anything to indicate hp after hits are taken or where allies would be. Heck, I'm not sure how we found each other so fast on that big map, or how if we did Andurwin could have been anywhere near close enough to a scaffold to get up it. Not to mention theres no way he could climb a scaffold in one round unless he started it right at its base, since he moves at 1/4 speed on it. If Zelck doesn't have a problem with it, neither do I (I don't see it chaging after those energy rays no matter what, particularly considering Andurwin most likely would be hit by the second one in a rerun), but its something of a mess to be perfectly honest.

Presuming no change in results occurs though, your rewards are wrong. Istima should get 1,050 xp and gp (his forgery only negates the penalty for one horse, not both), and Andurwin 500 xp and gp (you forgot his bonus from both horses).

Annalina used 1pp, Powerstones of Force Screen [ML 2] and Offensive Precognition [ML 2], Scrolls of Invisibility [CL 3], Mirror Image [CL 3], and Expeditious Retreat [CL 2], 1 use of her Dorje of Offensive Prescience, and 1-2 arrows (depending on if the miss survives). And Larcalme died.

Lantash cast Entropic Shield and Santuary from memory, used Scrolls of Mage Armor [CL 1], Shield [CL 1], and Protection from Evil [CL 2], and 1 charge of his wand of MM.

Yilmaz used Lay on Hands and 3 charges of his wand of CLW. And Falstaff died.

I'm unsure of what to do at this point. I'm assigning a win to Izumi by default(Anakala has no remaining ways to kill him). The only tactics left for Anakala that are written down is summoning monsters "as needed"(in his default tactics), but I don't think that's what Telin meant when he wrote those under default tactics.(and it would waste his resources to use them as such.)

If Telin wants me to continue using that bit of the default tactics(It will just be him 5' stepping away and attempting to summon monsters)I will, but otherwise Izumi wins.

I'll accept the surrender I guess. Ana did have one spell level left that she could have used for an inflict spell - but that would be asking for something not there.

I don't understand why you rolled new rolls for Ana for the opposed rolls - but not for Izumi. Since they are essentially attack rolls - the ones she had should have sufficed.

Regardless - he doesn't get a +4 for size, but he does get a +4 for having a two-handed weapon.

Yup. That's how I calculated it- +4 for his +6-2(doom) attack bonus, then +4 for two-handed weapon.

As far as why the new rolls for Ana- in my head you were going to use the old rolls for attacks on those turns if you lasted that long...

if you really think the old rolls would change the fight I can put them in, but I think with the sundering tactic in you're gonna lose it the moment he takes out your main melee weapon.

Ana is level 5 and has 2 CR1 allies. Her maximum CA is 3 (5-2) - so she has 2/3rds of her maximum. 25% would be the maximum - so 2/3rds of that is 16.667%

I feel like people with allies should be required to post that info somewhere on their sheet....

Anyway, once again: Sorry to my gladiators for letting this drag on 'till tuesday. Alot of it was unavoidable, but some of it was my fault.(I had a three hour stretch on Sunday that I could have done it during and decided to watch a movie instead)

I am currently running Aerryl vs Samuel, and I have a couple of questions that might be important very soon:

- Using an offensive spell/power is considered an attack regarding the Hide skill (like it is for Invisibility)? More specifically, if someone casts/manifests from a hiding position, is this considered 'sniping'?

- What happens if a ghost uses malevolence on a summoned creature, and this creature is dismissed? My rule would be that the ghost goes to whatever plane/location the creature was before it was summoned (and in the specific case of the arena fight, would lose the fight without means to go back like teleportation/plane shift). But I want another opinions. An Elder opinion, if possible.

As college is consuming my life pretty much more than I expected, the Hunter fight will be late, sorry. If anyone wants to take it, I wouldn't mind, though.

I don't know if you mean to be done with it or not - but the rewards still need to be cleaned up - specifically about the used spells and the time roll. The time roll is listed on the pairings post (this week is 2 hours) and Ana used 7 spell levels (Enlarge Person, Bull's Strength, Doom and Blindness).

Izumi used Skate and Force Screen (2pp).

No. Samuel will become visible as soon as he manifests something.

Difficult question.
I have no idea, but banishing Samuel to a different plane sounds harsh. However after reading Aerryls tactics, I dont think that it will come to that unless I fail the dispel check on Predator or he rolls a natural 20 on the save vs Malevolence which causes Aerryl to surrender.

No. Samuel will become visible as soon as he manifests something.Indeed. But since he is hiding, I should have to make a Spot x Hide check, and I would like to know if Samuel gets -20 in this Hide check.

Why another place?
either he stays in control of the Janni and changes planes(harsh ruling) or he gets booted and stays in the place that he was. I dont see any reason why his location on the material plane should change.

Sniping
If you’ve already successfully hidden at least 10 feet from your target, you can make one ranged attack, then immediately hide again.

It says ranged attack, therefor I would say ranged spells are OK. But don't forget the verbal componenent of spells or the display of powers.

Malevolence on a summoned creature:

If the creature is dismissed, it is bad luck for the ghost, if he can't get out, he is on another place or plane, just where the summoned creature comes from. That's my opinion.

With regard to the rewards for the Sewer all vs all fight, there's a bit of a problem:

Okay - it gets a little confusing with the allies and the free activities.

First of all, everyone is level 4, so winner rewards start at 1200+800 =2000. 2nd place gets 800xp and third gets 400xp.

Now, let's add in the allies and their effects:

Farig has a CR1 horse which is a 12.5% penalty for her normally, but since she uses forgery this effect is negated. Since she is only half of the opponents for any one of her two opponents, the bonus is halved (6.25%) for each of them. With Osiris' horse in the mix, Farig gains 6.25%.

Osiris has a CR1 horse which is a 12.5% penalty for her. She gains a 6.25% bonus because of Farig's horse - so the next is a 6.25% penalty.

Sali Kan, who brought no allies, gains 6.25% from Farig's horse and 6.25% from Osiris's horse, for a total of 12.5%.

Since Sali Kan took first place, he earns 2000xp + 12.5% = 2250xp/2250gp.

Since Farig took 2nd place, she earns 800xp + 6.25% = 850xp/850gp.

Since Osiris took 3rd place, she earns 400xp - 6.25% = 375xp/375gp.

Man, I'm inclined to agree on this one. It seems pretty cut and dried. Unless the possessing ghost can de-malevolence as an immediate action, it is stuck in possessed creature.

Planar travel wouldn't seem to be an issue (i.e. - a possessed ethereal marauder would still be able to plane jump, right?).

There's an issue with whether you can even Malevolence outsiders and elementals, since their souls and bodies are one unit. Thus, forcing their soul out results in forcing their body out as well. In an arena on another board, the DM ruled that as long as the ghost remains in one place and concentrates, the outsider/elemental winks out as if it were a summoned creature that stepped in an AMF.
TheMagister

09-26-06, 03:02 PM
HEY, that's RIGHT! I change my opinion. Outsiders can't be possessed, so summoned creatures are immune to malevolence.

Summoned ANIMALS, however, would still seem to be legal targets.

No and they move whenever their target moves.

No - SW does not threaten (it says as much in the spell description).

They move when they make an attack and always attack from the direction of the caster. If the target moves out of sight of the caster - the SW returns to the caster until a new target is made.

Can you give a source for this? Where does it say that outsiders can't be possessed? Just because its body and soul are "one unit" doesn't mean that the body can't be controlled by an outside force. I don't see anything that directly supports this conclusion.

Malevolence works like Magic Jar. Magic Jar requires forcing someone's soul out of their body. Outsiders' souls cannot be forced out of their body.

Luxt'l vs Ihdald is up. Just polishing the chrome.

Some problems: Casting sleep is a full round action, so Luxt'l could have only gotten two off.
Side Note: That's why I included the ghost sound in my tactics; I (believe) the invisibility wouldn't drop when I started casting, but when the spell goes off. With his uber listening, he very well could have pinpointed me, or at least figured out what square I was in, if he heard the chanting. Being that he's immune, though, there's really no point to adding that in.

Jeez, I can't belive I forgot about his immunty. I spent about an hour writing out these super complex tactics. Towards the end, I noticed his will save was abysmal. The thought process was akin to this:

I will edit the 3FC block to show two sleeps used, but the fight will stand as written because it doesn't change the outcome and I dont feel like editing it. As far as ghost sound, your invis would have stayed up either way (no target/AoE). Unless there is some strange Council ruling I am unaware of, it also cannot function as a Thunderstone or otherwise reduce the opponent's Listen check.

I made many concessions and tactics modifications in your favor (Lantesh casting Sanc, Having Yilmaz charge Larc, adjusting to invis.) and I do need to be fair in giving Anna some of those breaks as well. While I modified her initial invis strike, it was against tactics rather than improvising.

I also stand by the statement within my other response post, I am not going to rerun this fight with Scale included.

@ DSugui - Damn, those Dice Gods are fickle! Six attacks with a +10 modifier against an AC of 17 (21/ ride), and only two get through! And War gets a crit that takes out all of those Bear's Endurance-boosted hps! Destra must just not be destined to do much winning in FFAs (a pity, since she seems to get them as often as 1-on-1s).

However, there is one error that I feel needs to be pointed out: Sauria cannot attack while Faelto is riding her, since shes just a Heavy Horse, not a Warhorse. That won't change the fight's outcome most likely, but it should let Carcaruva at least get a chance to stabilize rather than dying outright (and it would give her some extra attacks to help Destra with, so theres always the of chance of a crit there, and if she lives to round 18 that flanking bonus lets that one hit if Faelto fails her ride).

Edit: Oh, there is something that may turn that more easily! You forgot to subtract the 9 hp from Destra's first hit from Faelto's hp total! She should actually have 3 hp after that second hit, which means any hit by Carcaruva would change the fight, giving Destra second!

If you have the time, I'd appreciate it if you could at least edit that to see if Carcaruva stabilizes and thus isn't lost to Destra next week, even if shes ignored for the attacking.

Second, my horse have a Jump of +15(+3 str, +12speed), so they could just get to my opponent.

You do realize your horses don't have tricks. As a result you need to spend a handle animal full round maneuver each round to order them to do anything. That being at DC 25 handle animal check per animal. For them to jump across the lava without a jump skill they could easily do such an action if they are trained to do that. They would be landing on a crowded square though when they land. They can jump untrained but fall down if they don't pass by more then 5.

In general, it is upto a pitlord to decide at what point your not meaningfully interacting with the combat. Buffing every 10 rounds isn't considered meaningful. Otherwise your in for a world of hurt when you fight Lord Frost. He will burrow under the sand and wait for you do die of hunger or old age. Both are viable tactics for the dragon.

It seems your are right, but unfortunatelly an edit would take too long and I don't have time. If you are really unconfortable with the results as they stand, please ask for a hold over (if Telin and NiQil agree).

I appreciate your understanding.
*winces* Well, I am uncomfortable with Carcaruva's loss when she should have lived, but nothing is worth having a fight held over to me. I'll just go with it then. Thanks for the run.

Well, warhorses are assumed to have Combat Riding unless otherwise specified. However, these horses haven't been trained to grapple, which is what they were supposed to do here. They can still attack, jump, etc. though.
