Grand Melee

This thread is being opened for the discussion, and debate, of the Grand Melee idea that has been floating around for quite some time now. There are different points of view and ideas to be explored about who should be invited, how many players be involved, what style of combat, what types of characters, what level of character ... the list goes on and on. This initial post will be edited from time to time, or if needed completely replaced by another thread, and we can freely debate and always have a reference point to return to.

Who should be involved?

Anyone in the Wizards Community
Anyone who has a character in the CoCo
Anyone who has been a part of the CoCo for two months
Anyone who can pay the entry fee of # credits

What format should the Grand Melee be?

Unlimited free-for-all (As many PCs as people feel like entering)
Limited free-for-all (A set number of PC's - 4, 6, 8, 12, etc)
1vs1 - Brackets, winners only, level advance (Much like how the arena was befoe LG, except that each week would have 1/2 as many fights as the previous week!)
1vs1 - Brackets, winners only, no level advance (Like above, but a faster tournament due to no leveling; once 2 new fighters were ready they could be paired and the fight assigned!)
1vs1 - Brackets, winners and losers, no level advance (This gives the most definate idea of who lost the most, but the winner is still the winner.)
Team vs Team - Brackets, winners only, no level advance (Cool idea - The team idea needs to see some more organized play)
Hybrid - (2 - 8) Limited free-for-all ==> free-for-all (This would start with 2 - 8 small groups of up to 12 or so gladiators involved in a free-for-all. The final 1 or 2, from each fight, would then go on to the final free-for-all.)

Lesser Questions

What level will the PCs be/start at?
Who is willing to run fights?
Who is willing to run limited free-for-alls?
Who is willing to run unlimited free-for-alls?

This should be a decent starting point. I am sure that some <meow> might fuss that I went and opened a whole new thread, but we have the CoCo all to ourselves, so we might as well enjoy it. It is not like when we were all cramped in the corner of the Character Optimization Board! Do you remember those days?

Have you thought about having a swiss pairing system to narrow the field down to the top 4? (or 8 or 16 if a LOT of people participate)

Swiss is a nice way to let everyone get a set number of fights in for a tournament, so they don't have to feel so let down if they get beaten in the first round. A quick summary of the swiss system is here (http://myweb.cableone.net/somerent/boisemagic/swiss-pair.htm).

I would run fights of any sort.

I think everyone should only get 1 character, otherwise Billy Joe with lots of credits could feasibly enter 20 Gladiators.

I like the idea of a 2 on 2 matchup until there are only 4 or 8 Gladiators left. It gives the spirit of teamwork until the endgame.

Iron Man. C'mon, who's gonna argue it shouldn't be.

I think XP/GP should be awarded, but not until the character has been eliminated or declared the victor.

I think that the winner should get a good repuation bonus for being the champion.

What about consolation prizes? Like a minor magic item to 2nd place?

I would like to see the 1vs1, brackets (or swiss), with levelling, open to 1 PC of everyone who had competed in even a single CoCo fight up to the editing deadline for entry.

If we go without levelling though, we could go with a format where there is no XP/gp reward for victory, so you only get to bring what you go in with, and rather than the 1/3 rule for spellcasting, you just don't get to rest between fights. Basically like one continuous fight. That would also sit perfectly well with me.

Every fight isn't going to be a true test of your build because you're going to get weaker and weaker as you progress (if you are a form of caster or expendables user) and eventually you'll lose just because you've run out of abilities for the day. Not to mention malicious people could go into a fight with the sole intention of forcing you to use resources (even if they lose)...thus making it a lot harder for you to advance later on.

But at level 10, if you cannot manage your abilities as a spellcaster, you can't work well with a party either. I think Iron Man, when applied to higher level characters, would test not only the build, but the player involved in the build.

I still feel that since we are giving away 'one' personal avatar, it should be based on individual success. Therefore, a 1 vs. 1 tournament is the best choice...

Perhaps we could have a 4 person free-for-all preliminary round, for the 8, 16, or 32 entrants, and then it could be one on one from there, that way we get a little of everything. The first day could be the 4 person battles, and the second day could begin the Iron-man competition.

16 > 4 > 2 > 1 (winner)

Or
Bracket A
16 > 4 > 2 > 1
\
>Winner of Custom Avatar
Bracket B /
16 > 4 > 2 > 1
Since this is a Tournament for a custom avatar, each person should only be allowed one entry, there 'champion'. The name...

The Tournament of Champions©

We, tabletop gamers and friends (old and new) get together for a ToC every year since the late 80's. It's been called the Tournament of Champions since its creation. I do not mind lending its name to the CoCo, as I would invite all of you to the ToC if you lived closer. Actually, I was looking into running a ToC at GenCon, but haven't pursued it thoroughly enough yet...

I would suggest that the fight is run at lower levels 4-5 at most as it would make it easier for our pitlords to run the fight.

As for the saving your stuff for the final fight if you try to do so you might not reach the finals of course if you pull it off the more power to you.

1. Who should be involved?

2. What format should the Grand Melee be?

3. What level will the PCs be/start at?
1. What about anyone who's had a character in CoCo for one or two weeks before the tournament?

2. I like the hybrid idea. I think smaller teams would be better though because the more people that are in a team, the more people get an idea of how you do your tactics, which can be a bad thing when it comes to fight each other. I definitely think it should be ironman, and that XP should be awarded after defeat/total victory.

3. An idea of Uther's I liked was every player create a pc just for the tournament. As for ECL, I'd say take a poll.

Prizes:
I think if teams are small enough, say 2 or 3 people, each team member should get a CA. And I agree again with Uther. I think consolation prizes should be awarded to runner ups, with the amount of runner ups recieving prizes depending on how many players enter.

If we level up after each win, the Iron Man would be fine. You could gain the added spell slots, power points, etc. when you level to help boost you back up.

Also, how about team fights where the teams get smaller and smaller? You star with two teams of eight, the winning team is split into two teams of 4, that winner into two teams of two, and then a one on one fight.

I think the RP aspect of this tournament should be a big deal. The winner is crowned the Champion of Gladius for a year. With the upcoming reputation system, being the champion of gladius would certainly prove useful.

Truth be told, I am not too terribly a large fan of these types of things, but that does not mean I won't try to help (or perhaps even participate).

I agree that a set number of particpants may be allowed to enter. We could try to make this flow as quickly and painlessly as possible (no one wants to deal with complications). Thus, I also do not support the chaotic free-for-all (to many ways to cheese those).

Cast my vote for 1vs1, brackets, winner advance (no leveling), and only people with characters in the COCO may enter. Being an endurance race, as well, I suggest lifting the 1/3rd rule for this tourny, and leave it up to the character how he wishes to spend his resources.

May I also suggest that characters who have fought for 3-4 battles already may participate. This cuts down the possibilty of one-shot characters.

If fights need to be run, you can count on me (I may not write stories for them though (not much "atmosphere", if you catch my drift)... Joe the announcer could have a voice though...
