| SauroGrenom11-09-06, 10:29 PM | PSI's spymaster is good. But some are able to cloak their opperations such that even Cyra's sources cannot pinpoint their headquarters. Istima though on this as he looked at the low temple shrouded in mist of the hollow below. Kelartus is a low lying district and at night the streets are often shrouded in mists rising from the nearby bay which blow up the river. Known as the home of faithfull and learned monastic groups, Kelatrus is both the least and most likely to find a fledgling vigalanti group growing. Some monkish leader of formitable psionic power has created a following in this district. His vigilanti followers roam the night as solitary inforcers of higher moral law. Cyra was unable to be certian of the location of the leader of this new group, but she did identify the three most likely sites. Here a low and humble temple lies near the river and surrounded by a well kept cemetary. The grass is mown, the trees are trimmed, and flickering candle light is visible in the windows of the 1st floor near the rear of the temple. |
| Zevox11-10-06, 07:05 PM | Istima stared at the temple, contemplating what he might say to these people. Many people inherently distrusted those of his race, and though it was rare for any to outright attack in Gladius, most would listen to him only half-heartedly, if at all. And it wasn't as though he was more connected to these people than others of the consortium - he was only moderately religious, and scarcely anything physically. He wasn't sure why he had been chosen for this mission, but most likely he had his work cut out for him. Still, he reasoned that the best way to begin contact with them was to show them he bore them no malice, so he urged Ingole into a trot, heading towards the candlelight he saw, making sure to keep his hands on Ingole's reigns and well away from his weapons and to occassionally speak comfortingly to his old friend in Elvish as they approached so the horse would not be too jitterish. |
| SauroGrenom11-11-06, 06:55 PM | Istima urges his mount down the path toward the temple below. As you apporach the mists grow thicker and the tall stones of the graveyard obscure vision of the temple located in the center of them. An old iron gate creeks as you open it and enter the graveyard grounds. Scant moments later, Istima spots a pair of hulking forms in the mist. The move between the stones with a lumbering and slugish gait. The smell of rotting corpse wafts throught the air. Istima sees that they are ogres and somehow their rotting bodies are lumbering about. One of the ogres lumbers forward with a fantasticially halting gait as it steps over and on tombstones. The other crashes into a shrub and extricates itself while Istima responds to the attack. You've got about 20' to the 1st zombie and about 35' to the other. They are both on the west side of a path infront of you. One zombie beat you on initiative, the other goes after you. |
| Zevox11-11-06, 10:54 PM | Istima responds quickly, recognizing the creatures as undead - he had studied such beings with Sammuel's aid back at the Consortium - and knowing that creatures like that were rarely friendly to the living, he prepares to fight. Ingole trots around them to give him a good shot, and once he has the twain lined up he focuses his mind on gathering energy at his fingertips. The energy bursts into flame, and in an instant a roaring beam of fire springs from his hand to slam into the two reanimated beasts. Before the fires even subside Ingole is off again, taking his friend and master further from the monstrous creations of dark magic. Ogre Zombies eh? This'll be easy. No way they can catch me out in any relatively open area, and I have a huge excess of pp this week. (BTW, Istima has relevant knowledge skills for everything, if you want to roll to see what he knows about any given monster.) So, Ingole manuevers to give me a shot at both at once, and Istima manifests a 6 pp fire energy bolt. Being what they are, thats gonna hurt. Ingole then backs away as far as the movement he is permitted will take him (have to manifest at halfway through a double move). Concentration for double moving auto-succeeds. |
| SauroGrenom11-13-06, 05:53 PM | Istima pulls his hourse around and deftly manifests a bolt of fire as his horse puts some distance between himslef and the lumbering hulks. A well placed bolt burns both the undead badly. The two lumbering corpses persue Istima, but they cannot move quickly enough and only manage to move out into the main path and approach a short way before Istima follows with another bolt of fire as he continues to retreat. The two corpses are now both smoking and most of their flesh has been burned away, but they mindlessly press the attack as Istima is backed up against the gate which has swung closed behind. A final blast of fire strikes the two approaching hulks and the onslaught of energy is too much of their already punished bodies. The creature in the front catches the full force of the bolt and is reduced to ash while the creature in the rear crumbles to the ground as the flames etch patterns into newly exposed bone. You got lucky with that encounter. As a guild encounter I'm required to roll on the tables, and there is a chance it can come up as being 1 ECL lower. That's what happened here. |
| Zevox11-13-06, 10:15 PM | Um, actually, unless I missed something, you're not required to roll monsters at all for missions. Cat suggested it, but I can't find it in the rules, and I don't recall him ever saying it had gone into effect. Anyway, this was Istima's week 3, so hes due for some shopping. Care to let me know how much he gets for this match, and any preference for how I update the sheet (tell you what he buys & you add it to the saved one, I update & post it, etc)? Istima breathed a brief sigh of relief, seeing that the monsters would no longer bother him. Calming Ingole back down, he advances towards the building, hoping the battle had not disturbed those he had come to contact or made them think he was a foe. |
| SauroGrenom11-16-06, 01:20 PM | As Istima turns his head away from the scent of scorched rotted ogre flesh, he vaugely spots a shadow that moves. A medium sized typical humanoid form is barely visable as a darker gray than the surrounding mist. What's realy exceptional is that it exicutes an increadible soundless leap over 12 feat high carrying it over and outside of the stone wall at the perimiter of the graveyard, and it is gone. Not realy sure if the shadow was imagined or realy observed, Istima guilds his horse over the smoking corpses and down to the temple beyond. A very frail very old and nearly stone deff halfling priest opens the door. He invites Istima in and offers tea (a strong brew made of roots and berries) while he shouts at the top of his lungs. It's immediately clear that this old priest lives hear alone, and that the temple has fallen into serious disrepair. This place cannot be the headquarters of The Open Handed Way. I think you should edit your sheet, and post the revised one. You earn 1200xp and 1350gp. Oh, you should drink the tea... it's your RP mechanism for restoration of pp. |

Its a little early, but I went and bought his Pegasus mount for next level. May as well make sure he has it, in case he levels up from this. Istima sips the tea, enjoying the tase. He had always found such drinks quite refreshing, and it was one of the many things that made him glad he had left his tribe. "I thank you for your hospitality, old one." he says in common that contains both Goblin and Elvish accents, making sure to speak loudly enough that he is heard. "But I fear I cannot stay long. I am seeking a group of monks that are supposed to be around here - a group called the Open Handed Way. Perhaps you have heard of them?" |
| SauroGrenom11-17-06, 03:34 PM | The tea is refreshing and the old priest gives a blessing as you partake. A currious thing happens as you drink the tea, and your mind feals compleately refreshed. Conversation with the priest is however not a refreshing. After you ask about monks of the Open Handed Way he replies, "You don't say? Monks who dance the Left Handed Sway? Hrmm. Nope never heard of those." It becomes clear that this old preacher will not be a source of information about the monks. With no other options, Istima checks the list of likely locations for the headquarters of the new monks provided by Cyra. Mounting his horse, Istima says good bye to the preacher and travels to the next location. Nearly an hour later, Istima approaches the next location described by Cyra's notes. Although not a religious building of any kind, the warehouse ahead is in an isolated section of the district. It's presence on the list is attributed only to the isolation and apparent inhabitation of the structure coupled with the fact that no messengers visiting at night have returned. A low and swampy area surrounds the warehouse. Most of the other commercial structures burned when the district was sacked in the Year of Hell, but this one is isolated from the city by a section where the ground is not firm enough to build on. It was once a larger building, but part has sagged into the muck of the swamp. Only a fraction of the building remains intact, but it appears to be inhabited. There is a thin line of white smoke rising from the chimney, and a winding muddy path that leads through a streatch of swamp grasses and shrubs. |
| Zevox11-18-06, 12:40 PM | Istima gazed suspiciously at the swampy area. He is keenly aware that have such a region within the city can hardly be a natural occurance - some magic must have created it, which automatically makes this a suspicious spot. Still, there was nothing he was going to get accomplished sitting out here staring at it, and he wasn't versed enough in spellcraft to tell much about it if it was a work of magic instead of mind-magic in any event, so he sets off for the building, Ingole trotting at the same pace as when he had approached the kindly old Priest's temple, hoping not to alarm the inhabitants of the building. |
| SauroGrenom11-19-06, 11:13 PM | Istima approaches at a leasurly speed along the road ahead. After traveling a bit into the tall grasses, Istima notices a sudden change in the night sounds. All is quiet. His iears strain against the silence, but nothing... his eyes scann the swampy terrin, but no hint of a creature around him is observed... Nothing attacks yet, but the night is too quiet, and you are sure that something stalks you... |
| Zevox11-20-06, 01:16 PM | Being catious, Istima grasps one of the powerstones in his belt pouch and brings up a ward against attacks with it. He does not trust this region. Not sure what exactly you're looking for me to do here (do I get to the destination without being attacked or not?), but I may as well do something, so go ahead and put up a force screen from my powerstone (suppress the display). |
| SauroGrenom11-20-06, 03:06 PM | I'll be more mechanisticially detailed so that it's all clear. I rolled initiative for your next foe, and you lost. Battle has begun, but the foe is not heard of seen by you. The opponent beat your spot and listen checks, but has not yet attacked. Give me a few minutes, and I'll post the next round. |
| SauroGrenom11-20-06, 06:48 PM | Istima urges his mount forward as he draws a stone and manifests a protection. The sense of being watched and hunted still remains, but Istima cannot catch sight of or sound of the hunter... Istima draws a stone and uses it, while his mount uses a move action. The hunter remains unobserved as it follows and tries to close the distance. Istima's turn. |
| Zevox11-21-06, 12:49 AM | Okay, okay, I get the message. Use stone of touchsight. Deciding it is better to be safe than sorry here, Istima also invokes a powerstone he had saved for an emergency, one which let him telekinetically sense his surroundings with perfect clarity. He checked for the source of his unease... |
| SauroGrenom11-21-06, 09:36 AM | Istima draws a stone from his pack and manifest it. Instantly he begins to percieve with a new second sight... the world around him is crisp and clear. With his new sense, Istima scanns the surroundings. At first there is nothing different, but then something moves between two schrubbs and Istima tracks it's carefull movement as it manouvers closer to a point about 10' away remaining hidden from normal sight. You are sure that it is an example of a strange plant creature called a Shambling Mound. It was using hide and MS checks, and I'm not 100% sure if touch sight can defeat hide, but I'll give it to you. The shambling mound has a low movement speed, so it was taking a while for it to get into position where it could threatin you. You drew and manifest from the stone. The Mound moved silently and hid. Your turn. |
| Zevox11-21-06, 12:02 PM | Oh, it definitely defeats hiding. "Automatically pinpoints everything in range" and all that. Now then, to deal with the plant... Surprised by the creature's prescence so close, Istima quicly kicks Ingole into a dash away from the beast. As they retreat, Istima searches his knowledge of such beasts. Electricity would not harm them, and they possessed a resilience against flame. He knew they were strong of body, if slow, but also weak of mind. Unfortunately, thier minds were also too primitive to affect much. Still, he had at least one ability that should deal with it quite handily. Withdraw (I believe it'll take Istima's action to do that as well, but if not then defensive manifest while I'm at it). Pop it with Energy Rays (cold), full augmentation, hit-n-run attacks thanks to my mount. That should give me 3 shots at 6d6+6 damage each, for an average of 81 damage - more than enough. Considering its touch AC, I shouldn't miss, so with any luck this'll be over quickly. |
| SauroGrenom11-21-06, 12:10 PM | Plants are immune to mind effecting effects. Istima would know that. Edit: looks like you edited your post already...Zevox is a quick one. |
| Zevox11-21-06, 12:12 PM | Plants are immune to mind effecting effects. Istima would know that. Noticed that seconds after posting it myself. Edited for a more workable plan. |
| SauroGrenom11-21-06, 12:45 PM | FYI rolls are here. (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=778) Istima whirls Ingole and retreats from the creature. It feebly attempts to chase after, but is far too slow to catch the horse. Istima begins to use his distance to strike at the creature with Energy Rays. By slowly backing up after each blast, he safely freezes the plant creature to death with 3 rays. (It has made all the saves, and taken 44 damage.) The creature is not yet dead, but clearly suffering from the cold attacks. Doh, rays don't grant saves. |
| SauroGrenom11-21-06, 04:26 PM | After a few minutes Istima resumes his approach to the warehouse ahead. As he turns away from the thawing hulk of the now dead shambling mound, Istima notices a form lurking in the swamp just beyond the range of his touchsight. As soon as you notice it, the form soundlessly dissappears into the shrubs of the swamp and is gone. It is late at night now, and Istima continues his mission hoping to complete it this night. As he approaches the warehouse he is met by a dirty man and woman who emerge when they hear the sould of an approaching horse. They hail you from a distance with happy voices. "Ho Friend, how did you pass the creature?! We've been trapped here for 4 months unable to win passage to any other place. " |
| Zevox11-21-06, 08:57 PM | Istima waves greetings at the two, though inwardly he sighs. Clearly these two were not the ones he sought, if they had been trapped by that creature. "Well met, friends." he calls back. "The Shambling Mound should be no more trouble for you - I believe it is quite dead. I have some talent as a mind-mage, you see, and the creature moved too slowly to be a bother to my friend Ingole here." He pats the horse affectionately as he says this. "Are you all right? I can see to your quick and safe passage somewhere with food, water, or shelter, if you require. There is much room to spare here." He says, grinning slightly at the reference to his size compared to his trusty steed's. |
| SauroGrenom11-21-06, 10:35 PM | At the suggestion of free passage out of their current situation, the couple are instantly filled with joy. Ohh! Thank you strange Sire. Please do take us away from here. Anyplace would be better. With those words the woman runs inside and returns with now slightly awake and sleepy eyed 5 year old. The family is very thankfull and all climb on Ignole. Although a bit burdened, Ingole can carry the family, and everyone safely makes it out of the swampy area. |
| SauroGrenom11-25-06, 11:42 PM | Sorry for the delay, I was out of town for a few days with thanksgiving and all. Istima transports the family to safely and gives then tokens of protection by the Consortium when the deposits them at a modest Inn located in Lower Merx. He knows that the guild's opperatives will find them, and ensure their safety. Istima returns to his task that first lead him into Kelartus. There is a final location on his list of likely headquarters for the Open Handed way. A large park near the center of the district was once maintained by wealthy family who lived in a manner at the center of the park. The family was lost in the Year of Hell and the park has fallen into disrepair. But there is evidence that the manor is occupied. Istima approaches down a wide boulevard that runs down the center of the park. The morning light is just now begining to fill the sky with a pink color. The faint glow of the sky behind has dispelled the mist of the deeper evening, and now Istima can see the manor about 200' ahead. The building is wide, two stories tall, stone with a stone carriage house and barn positioned nearbye. It is surrounded by a wrought iron fence with a small gatehouse. |
| Zevox11-26-06, 09:46 PM | Sorry myself - haven't had much time around here this weekend, between work and homework. As before, Istima decides the best way to show his intentions to the Monks is to approach them openly, so he and Ingole trot up towards the Gatehouse in hopes of meeting with a friendly reception. |
| SauroGrenom11-27-06, 06:08 PM | Istima and Ingole trot to the manor down the center of the boulevard, and stop short when a sewer grate 10' to the left starts to shout and curse. OUCH, Bugger! Now Missy, you quit squirmin, else I brain you. @#$@!*& The sun's nearly up, hurry mate with that grate. We can't be seen hustl'n er toward the base in day light. A second voice replies, %#@&@ You! Yell'n at me won't make it easier to jimmy this rusty lock. Ahh, got it.. A moment later the grate pops open, and a dirty burly salor type of man jumps out. He immediately starts hauling a large squirming child sized dirty brown sack out of the sewer. The sack is followed by a second roguish looking fellow who grunts as he climbs out of the sewer. The second man immediately spots Istima. With a look of surprise he shouts pointing, Ho! You friggin fool! We've been spotted! We'll begin combat now. Istima gets a surprise round but looses initiative. They are only 10' away. Edit: Give me a general tactic, and I'll run the whole battle tomorrow night. This shouldn't be much of a problem for Istima since you have surprise and a movement speed advantage. |
| Zevox11-28-06, 11:31 AM | First, sorry again for the infrequent posting - I've been busy, busy, busy with work and school. Anyway, tactics. Surprise Round: Force Screen powerstone, Ingole moves back 60'. Main tactic: Energy Bolt (Cold), getting both whenever possible. Hit-n-run manuevering, of course. If I run out of pp, crossbow, then if I run out of bolts melee with my staff and Ingole. Always: Use ride for cover and mounted combat to protect Ingole. Contingencies: - If hurt badly (less than 20 hp left), Vigor stone. - If they use energy, Specified Energy Adaptation stone vs that type. - If they'll help, my cognizance crystal for Grease/Skate (on Ingole) and my powerstone of enlarged entangling ectoplasm are fair game to use should something unexpected happen. |
| SauroGrenom11-29-06, 10:33 AM | Istima backs up and raises a protection. The two rogues run toward Istima and draw knives ending in flanking positions. Istima risks an attack as he backs up further and manouvers to hit the two rogues with an energy bolt. As he moves, the rogues slash at Istima and miss. The energy bolt strikes out and hits the two men with a snapping and violent cold. One falls to the ground while the other evades some of the blast. The remaining rogue draws a scroll from his belt and reads from it. The sense of an arecane spell begins to form, but it fails to complete. Istima blasts the rogue again with a ray of cold and the rogue falls unconcious. |
| SauroGrenom11-29-06, 10:54 AM | Istima releases the child from her bindings, and she cries with happyness. As you attend to the child an unseen and soundless watcher approaches. It seams impossible for the hulking form of a half giant to appear so quickly, but he is clearly benevolent. Clearly a monk of some kind, he introduces himself as Rebreg the leader of the Open Handed Way. He seams to know who you are, and is impressed by your deeds this night. Three times you have shown The Way to various people and creatures. You have earned the respect of him and his followers, and they are willing to speak with you and your guild. A group like this doesn't have a headquarters, so it's not possible to find one. These monks are poor, and they are a vigilanti group, so they stay in different and various places each day. |
