Note that all items have prerequisites in their descriptions. These prerequisites must be met for the item to be created. Most of the time, they take the form of spells that must be known by the item’s creator (although access through another magic item or spellcaster is allowed).

This means that almost any item is creatable at almost any level by purchasing spell casting. Very good news for some characters.

03-15-04, 10:43 AM In the arena, you cannot create items unless you can meet the prerequisites. You cannot "purchase spellcasting" to help you meet the prerequisites.

But, eliminating the minimum caster level prerequisite on things like pearls of power and ability+2 items is a good thing!

03-15-04, 11:12 PM So get a mage with the right feat and any other caster with the right spell, and voilá...
The problem here is that, unless the caster providing the spell is a friend of your character and works for free, this approach to crafting magic items is a bit more expensive.
Someone has to cast the spell once per day, for the whole duration of the crafting...
lets say you make a ring of protection +3. You have the "forge ring" feat, but can´t cast "shield of faith" yourself. So you get to the next magic item supermarket, hire the guy from the customer information service, let´s call him Mike, and off you go: this ring of protection +3 costs 18,000 gp, so you have to invest 18 days and 9,000 gp in raw materials into the process. Mike himself has got to be caster level 3*3 to be able to help you. Staying for 18 days, he demands payment equal to 18*(caster level*10gp for a 1st level spell)=1,620gp.
O.K, that´s still acceptable for this ring (you pay 18% more than usual), but the prices go up if you have to cast higher levels into the item. And this calculation is not taking into account that the spell-provider might raise his prices if he is hired for longer times. Evil DM´s have lots of opportunities to hurt you in such a situation.
...So basically its possible, if you are willing to pay more.

03-16-04, 06:39 AM The only problem I see with this is if you pay other PC's for spellcasting or crafting of any kind then they can get more and more money.
