His people are looked down upon... the reason for this Aranor is unsure of. He does not let this bother him, however. The mission at hand is far more important... |
| Vathelokai09-15-05, 09:27 AM | Continued from The Brotherhood of the Arcane Order Thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=229519&page=4&pp=30) "I see you havn't been to Gladius in a very long while or you would have heard. Last year a man by the name of Angosh allied himself with demons and took over the city. One of the first places that they subjugated was the Arcane campus. The wizards were rounded up and all who resisted were killed. The previous magister led the resistance. It was a long time before the celestial guard decided that they needed our help and rescued us. By then the magister had been dead quite a while." Then new, young magister said all of this impassively. Aranor listened and felt deep sorrow inside, but his exterior remained unmoved. "I had suspicions to that effect when I stopped recieving letters from him." The transmuters gaze fixed on the young magister again. Slightly unnerved, but refusing to give way to the stare, the Magister continued, "We built a memorial. For him and all those who died fighting that year. It is in the crypt, in the first level of the under hall. If you wish to pay your respects, then feel free. I believe you know the way?" Indeed, Aranor did know the way, though it had been many years since he had seen the crypt. Not enough years, he felt. The transmuter didn't bother with anysort of good bye to the new magister. He simply turned and walked through the door on the western wall. Down two halls and there was the flight of stairs. Down the stairs, through the entry chamber and down a long ramp, he walked past walls still unrepaired since the year of hell. Many of the torches had not been replaced, cracks in the morter had let in a slow leak of mold. The first level of the underhalls was at the same depth as the sewer tunnels of Gladius. Aranor was supprised that it was not worse. He finally reached a hallway that was in good repair, though it was just as badly lit as the rest of the tunnels. The walls had been done in friescos and firezes of battles waged by wizards. Each panel showed another man of power felled by a different demon. Of course, always in the background many more valiant mages fought on. Below each piece was a name, engraved on a plaque. Aranor knew that behind each panel was the crypt to the wizard who it rememberered, sealed by magic. Halfway down the hall, it occured (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151175) to the transmuter that some of the wall art was in bad repair. A good hit could probably crumble some of them. It made him angry that the new magister would allow the place to fall appart, while he would deck out the upper levels. At the end of the hall was a room, round and well lit. In the center was a circular monument, looking a bit like a fountain. Carved into the marble around the base were depictions of the friend Aranor had not seen in so many years. Unlike the other pieces, he could find no picture describing his fall. Only depictions of his lifes work. Along the wall, all the way around the room, were statues representing each of the mages who had fallen in the earlier art. |
| Vathelokai09-16-05, 11:14 AM | :bump: Your move |
| Sindorin09-16-05, 02:33 PM | As Aranor searched the area, a white barn owl poked his head out from under Aranor's arm, where a Familiar Pocket had been expertly crafted. "Ah, Invictus, I apologize for you thinking that it was nighttime already. We find ourselves among the ruins of an old friend. You do remember the Gladius Magister, correct? It seems that he died some time ago." The owl gives a mournful hoot, and wings itself up to Aranor's shoulder as the wizard stoops low to pick up a stone caption that had fallen to the ground. It depicted an Evoker, a young lad named Tair Malek, in a desperate duel with a Demon Lord. Blowing off the tablet, he learned of the Evoker's clever ruse in which he tricked Demon Lord Themmez out into the open using a simple Image spell, and then dealt death previously unthought of by his peers. It would be the last day of that particular demon lord's reign. The statue of the Evoker was easily the newest one down in this place. Aranor smiled. The lore that could be found in these dark halls would probably keep him occupied for an age, were it not for the sadness that clutched his heart for the loss of his old friend. He stood, turned, Invictus frantically struggling at his surprise from the sudden movement, drinking a draft of a fine make. Aranor will drink potion of Mage Armor, and search the room patiently. |
| Vathelokai09-17-05, 07:05 AM | Aranor absorbs the history of the room, comming to terms with the devestation that hit Gladius while he was away. It was a shame, he thought, that in the year since the war the guild had not been put into better repair. What was that new magister wasting his time on? After finding (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151704) nothing else amiss about the monument, the transmuter decides it would be best to return. He turns to leave, and notices (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151703) movement in the shadows of the hallway. He hears the scuffling of feat. Looking around he realizes that he is standing in a dead end. He takes a defensive posture at the edge of the enterence and waits. After a minute he can see (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151705) , barely in the shadows humanoid forms comming closer. Aranaor bides his time and they come up to within 50 ft. and he can make out what they are: skeletons, 6 of them. Initiative Aranor 3 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151706) Skeletons 16 (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151708) On their turn they moved, so it's your turn now. |
| Sindorin09-17-05, 11:35 AM | "Skeletons, Invictus! But you probably see them already. I'll handle this..." The dead and dank air around Aranor crackles with energy, for something is happening. Aranor's presence grows dark and menacing, and he suddenly hurls something at the skeletons... a tiny dried excrement flies within their midst, and suddenly there is a loud noise as the sulfur contained within the small drop of excrement explodes in a ball of fire... Fireball Damage (5d6=17) (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151748) Aranor will cast fireball, targetting all of them if possible, hopefully they are all decently close together for this... I'm not sure what to roll for damage since I may not be getting all of them. |
| Vathelokai09-17-05, 11:49 AM | Aranor is his by the blast of fire and bone fragments as all the skeletons are blown appart. The blast also extinguishes most of the lights in the hallway. Immediately afterward, the transmuter hears something (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151750) behind him. A grating stone sound. He spins on his heel and on the magisters monument is another skeleton. It is the skeleton of a tiny dragon. It crawls to the top of the monument and prepares to pounce. It spent it's action getting into position. Your move. On a side note: I was all packed and ready to go to Winfield when I found out the trip was canceled. It sucked, but here I am. |
| Sindorin09-17-05, 05:17 PM | That stinks... I thought I was going to get to see my girlfriend this weekend, but she backed out at the last second too. I flooded a drow village instead by clogging up an underground waterfall. Aranor grimaced as he had just gone a bit overkill in his old friend's crypt. "I suppose we'll have to be more subtle than that," he says to Invictus as they both disappear. He then moves, looking for cover and hoping to obscure his position... Aranor will cast Invisibility and then move behind any possible cover, trying to be silent... |
| Vathelokai09-17-05, 08:03 PM | Aranor slides (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151995) over to between two of the 'statues' on the wall and waits. The cat sized dragon stops moving and looks around. It stays perched on the very top of the monument. After a few seconds the bone dragon perks up again and dives from the monument right at (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=151991) Aranor. It manages to claw into him (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152003) 4 dmg. Shocked, the transmuter takes a step back. He cannot think of how (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152004) rolled a 1 the skeleton could have found him. He watches for a moment, and it is obvious that the dragon cannot see him still. |
| Sindorin09-17-05, 09:39 PM | What sort of devilry is this? Why would there be so many defenses of a simple honorary crypt? Aranor thought to himself calmly as he was then slashed by the dragon in his own invisibility. What the?? Aranor again attempts to sneak to a new, safer hiding spot, and he then readies to cast Scorching Ray at the enemy if it somehow locates and attacks him... |
| Vathelokai09-18-05, 05:20 AM | Aranor moves around to the back of the room and sees what he missed. The monument is a crypt. A secret door, now open, covers the back half. Inside is a resting place built for a human, but it is empty. Obviously, the skeleton was hiding in there. The bone dragon slowly waves it's head from left to right for a while and Aranor waits patiently. 15 seconds pass and then the creature stops, lifts it's head and dives for the wizard. It's speed is incredible, but the wizard is prepared. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152115) The searing beam of fire chars (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152116) through its ribcage, but it keeps comming. However, (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152118) it misses, swiping though the air next to him. Now that he is visible, the bone dragon stares at him menacingly. The transmuter backs up and summons electricity into his hand, expecting the creature to continue lunging. It does, and he grabs it (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152119). The shocking blast crumbles the creature to dust. He spends a full minute silently listening for a sign before he is sure he is alone. He searches the monument, and the hidden tomb inside, but cannot figure how the door works (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152120). rolled a 2. it's not Aranor's day He even casts detect magic but cannot discover how the crypt operates. Inside, instead of any sign of a body he finds see note at bottom of post. Deciding to think about it next to a warm fire, he gathers his things and heads back down the hallway. He summons magical light to the end of his staff and can see that his fireball caused more damage then he expected. Some of the weaker walls have been knocked down, revealing the crypt shelf behind them. He is not entirely supprised to find that some of them are empty, though not all. He inspects (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152121) the bodies that are still there and finds that they have been animated. Perhaps they are animated right now, but simply wait immoble. Invictus begins to squirm in his pocket. Before Aranor can ask what is the matter he knows. He is overcome (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152122) by a sudden wave of terror. He grips his staff and swollows hard, trying to calm himself. The sensation is entirely unfamiliar (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152124), though it reminds him (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152125) of being the target of a fear spell. He can find no source, and goes as far as to cast see invisibility, but can still find nothing. After a minute he convinces his limbs to stop shaking and proceeds cautiously down the hall. As he nears the end he spots something which brings back the sensation of fear. Two glowing yellow eyes, floating just at the end of the hall. From that clue alone (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=152127) he recognizes a dragon. He cannot see it clearly, but from the rumors he has heard on his way to Gladius, he must assume it is black. He shudders, envisioning the entire coridor filling with a broken dam of acid breath. Controling himself, he considers; if it wanted to kill me, I would be dead. Is it toying with me? How do I handle this? In the magister's crypt you find your prize for the fight. I though it fair to give you a choice; 900 gp in gems, hand of the mage (necklace - 0 Lv. mage hand at will), a CL 1 wand and some cash, or a sack of potions and scrolls. |
| Sindorin09-18-05, 01:46 PM | As Aranor is getting ready to leave this place, he takes one last look at where his old friend was to be buried. In the last traces of light that are allowed from the mess he has made, Aranor sees something twinkling at the bottom of the coffin. He walks over and examines it, finding it to be a necklace that his friend had always worn in life. Feeling the need to honor his friend in some way, Aranor picks up the necklace and puts it on, then leaves the tomb to contemplate his survival... The necklace would be a fun item to have for Roleplay, and it fits better and doesn't make it sound like Aranor is looting his friend's tomb. |
| Vathelokai09-19-05, 12:13 AM | Aranor hears the low, wry chuckle of the dragon, "Come closer, mammal. I want a good look at you. Or are you going to walk through the walls and make this difficult?" |
| Sindorin09-19-05, 12:44 AM | Stopping, Aranor turns around, and shakes the hair out of his eyes. "Were I able to walk through walls, master dragon, surely I would not be down here..." The cryptic response from Aranor Haerdonin was designed to gauge what the dragon was after... was it toying with him or did it wish him to know something? Aranor waited, arms crossed, watching the dragon vigilantly... |
| Vathelokai09-19-05, 01:51 AM | "Arn't we testy. You have come to the underhalls, but you did not expect me here, I see. How did you come here?" |
| Sindorin09-19-05, 02:05 AM | Aranor smiles at the dragon's tone. "Well, it so happens that the man to whom this tomb and crypt is for was an old colleague of mine in school. Coming here to mourn him after learning of his death, I find his tomb desecrated. Explain your purpose here, please." |
| Vathelokai09-19-05, 05:34 AM | "Hahaha. You're a funny one. I think I like you. It just so happens that I was invited here. Hmmmm....The person who this crypt was built for. That's funny. I've been here many times and there has never been anyone in that tomb. The rest were full, obviously. Tell me, who was supposed to be there? I was looking over the character sheet and noticed that you have the wrong banned schools in your spellbooks cantrip list. Also the tatoo focus should have a school specified. Feel free to update your sheet. The quest is technicly over. But the RP shall continue. |
| Sindorin09-19-05, 09:32 AM | Thanks for pointing that out, I originally had a different banned school and probably forgot to change that little tidbit. In terms of Tattoo Focus, it affects spells of your specialized school only, so I figured there was no need to put it, but maybe I should anyway just for clarity's sake. Aranor felt a chill go down his spine at the dragon's words. "This tomb was supposed to be the final resting place of a former Magister of the Arcane Order here in Gladius. He was to have died in the Year of Hell, a time when I was far away, on a different plane, deeply involved in my studies. May I ask who invited you to this tomb?" |
| Vathelokai09-19-05, 05:09 PM | "Why, the current headmaster, of course. You see, I don't mind telling you, because it will not be an issue in the future. I'm mearly telling you this to waste your time. I wouldn't want you to rush to his aid." With that the dragon begins chuckling again. |
| Sindorin09-19-05, 06:00 PM | You old fool, perhaps you are getting involved in something of greater scope than you realized in coming here... Aranor thought on the dragon's words for a moment. "So, I am to be occupied by you? That is your assignment? What is it that the current Magister would be doing while he is keeping me occupied by a stool pigeon?" Aranor sets his staff to lean against the wall and takes off his pack, setting it next to the staff. He then sits down, legs crossed, resting for a bit after all of this surprising news. Looking back to the empty crypt, he speaks aloud, to no one, "In pace requiescat..." |
| Vathelokai09-20-05, 07:50 AM | "You insult me, young wizard. And perhaps you do not understand. The Magister invited me to this place, but not this event. I am merely preventing you from comming to his aid. A lowly task, I admit, but it is sometimes nice to relax and let others take the forefront. |
| Sindorin09-20-05, 09:28 AM | Aranor turned from his gaze at the empty coffer to the dragon where it is perched. "You are correct, I do misunderstand. I do not know why it is that you must waylay me in this place, of all places. What is it that the magister is doing that I must not aid him in?" |
| Vathelokai09-20-05, 05:06 PM | Hahahahaha....Dying. |
| Sindorin09-20-05, 05:12 PM | Aranor was completely puzzled by this short answer given to him by the teasing dragon. "Dying...? Another Magister is dying? Why am I not to be there?" Perhaps he is hinting at the confirmation of my suspicions, that the Magister is in a sense tainted, and that this plot goes far deeper than I thought... what devilry could he possibly be dealing with... perhaps he creates a phylactery... Aranor thought calmly, curiously to himself, continuing to gauge the dragon's tactful teasing. |
| Vathelokai09-20-05, 05:17 PM | Well, it's off to work with me. I'll wrap this up tomarrow. The dragon sits at the end of the tunnel, unspeaking for a very long time. |
| Vathelokai09-21-05, 07:38 AM | The dragon and Aranor cease speaking to each other and dwel in their own thoughts. This goes on for hours. So many hours that Aranor begins to get tired. He eats a meal from his pack, paces, checks over all of his equipment, reexamines the frescos on the crypts. Eventually he cannot take it, and tries to talk to the dragon again, but the dragon doesn't respond. This goes on so long that Aranor is overcome by sleep. He fought a hard battle against it, but there was no way. And when he woke up again, there was the dragon, smiling. Again, the transmuter spends a full day in the crypt, even trying to walk past the dragon, but is continually blocked. Frustrated, he goes to sleep again, thought he has completely lost track of time in the underhalls. When he wakes up the next day the dragon is gone. |
| Sindorin09-21-05, 09:27 AM | "Such curious creatures, dragons... I suppose I should go check on the magister... and that I should take it upon myself, while here in this city, to never be surprised." Aranor packed his things, having made quite a sprawl of his possessions around one end of the crypt. Once prepared with spells for the day, he left the crypt and returned to the Arcane Order. |
| Vathelokai09-21-05, 09:35 AM | As Aranor approaches the upper levels, he hears various sounds. It is unusual, since they must be very loud to reach this far below the surface. The sounds come and go. Once he reaches the main hall he hears nothing. At a quick stride, he enters the greatroom where the magister waits behind his desk to great everyone. The magister is gone. I'm going to conclude things here. I'll pick up the story in a week, when the other members of TAO have finished their quests. I'm working on a short story that explains what was going on in the background. I've had to change a few things, because of the new guild stuff. And I had to rewrite some chunks after a floppy went bad on me. Any thoughts? |
| Sindorin09-21-05, 10:10 AM | Interesting stuff... |
