Laffinger grew up alone on the streets of Beto ("City of Wealth" in Halfling) in the nation of Simarior. He learned early how the right connections can get you where you couldn't otherwise get, and learned how to fake those connections. He conned himself into a job in the Ministry of Leisure, and found himself exploring nearby portions of the Apteri Jungle, looking for locations to set up resorts for the city, when he met his true love--the natural world. The peace (without austentation), serenity, and, yet, awesome power of it all so enthralled him that he began a wholly new course, resigning his post with the Ministry and heading off to Gladius, hoping to learn from the druids of the Yurynwood.

Laffinger lounged about in one of the many public parks and wondered what he had been thinking to come here in the first place. It seemed that everyone here had an agenda. Even the Living Tree seemed to be maneuvering for political power. It mightbe for a good cause, but it was not what he had in mind when he quit the Ministry to come here.

Sighing he decided that what he needed was a nice quiet night under the stars to remember all of the glory of the natural world that made his soul feel complete. With each step that carried him further from the main districts of Gladius, his heart lightened and soon a light tune escaped his lips and he found himslef singing softly to the sound of the breeze.

Passing a curiously empty seeming hamlet he headed for a stand of wild growth, looking for solitude. As he reached the edge of the trees he could hear the sounds of men and women shouting and the roars of joy and despair that hemore cloesly associated with the Arena coming from the trees ahead. Within a few more strides he could detect a faint glimmer of light coming from between the sweeping branches of a copse of enormous cedar trees.

With a half-smirk on his face, Laffinger muttered, "Unauthorized leisure activities, eh? We'll have to put a stop to that. Eh, boys?" he added, looking to Peregrine and Bogart. He tells them both to Guard, and places his whistle in his mouth to summon them at a moment's notice as he stealthily approaches the sounds.

Creeping up to the cedars and cautiously parting the lower branches, he sees a makeshift pen surrounded by a group of laborer types and farm wives. The crowd appears to be betting vigorously on something going on in the pen.

Over the cheers you can hear the grunt of a human and the squeal of an angry boar. The crowds cheers and boos soon drown out those sounds and a spray of blood can be seen over the nearest heads.

Laffinger circles around, hoping to get a better view of the goings-on, and to see whether the boar gored the man or the man speared the boar. Either way, he knows its a horrible spectacle and is appalled at the Tall Folks' means of amusement. This sort of event would never have been tolerated by the Ministry, which says something since the Ministry of Leisure bars almost no forms of entertainment, being both too free-spirited and too lazy to do much about them.

Perhaps the most appalling part is that the humans take the animals out of their natural environment, where it is a fair event, into a pen where they can't take advantage of their natural speed and hiding abilities. Laffinger has no qualms with honest-to-goodness hunts, which follow the great traditions of the natural cycle, with intelligent creatures (generally humans) taking the topmost position on the food chain. This, though, defies nature and seeks simply to show man's dominance without earning it.

As Laffinger tries to get closer to get a better view, he sees the corpse of the boar hoisted out of the pen and thrown on top of a pile of dead and dying animals and what looks like it might be a very young minotaur underneath it all.

Laffinger whistles out the signals for "Defend" and "Heel", then strides out into the glen, sling slung and in hand, and says, "Who's the fellow who asked these animals to compete here?"

The crowd turns as one and stares at Laffinger like he is some sort of unusual bug on a leaf in their cabbage patch.
After a moment of staring, a burly woman wearing a leather apron steps through the swiftly parting crowd and stands before Laffinger holding a snarling young dire wolf by the scruff of the neck in one hand and a wicked look axe iin the other hand.
"Reckon that 'fellow' would be me. What's it to you?"
Salrantol

05-29-06, 08:50 PM
"Well, young lady, it would appear that you are in violations of Statutes 601.24b and 573.2c.L of the Beto Municipal Code." Hoping to hide the fact that he didn't actually remember the statutes that barred pit fighting with animals and animal cruelty, he continued, "Although these laws have no jurisdiction over this case, I'm not a big fan of little detailed laws like that. However, to involve creatures in pit fights against their will is grossly unacceptable." He spun his sling casually. "So, I challenge you, your ladyship, under the following conditions--if I win, you immediately cease the use of any animals in your fights without their express consent, via speak with animals or somesuch thing. If I lose, my dog Bogart will be the next fighter. Our fight is not to the death of course."--important clause that, he had no way to know her skill level--"Neither of us has that much invested. But if I lose, Bogart's fight is. Since you have your 'dog', I will be permitted my smaller dogs in the fight. Agreed?" He moved his sling into his left hand, and extended his right for a handshake.

"I have a better idea," with a flick of her chin, a trio of burly young men that look a lot like her close in around Laffinger cutting off his escape.

"You fight this wee beastie, and if you live we'll let you have a sporting chance and running out of here. If you die..." she shrugs with a most unpleasant smile.

The burly men herd Laffinger and Bogart toward the pen with long boar spears. The woman strides over and tosses the dire wolf over the wall into the pen. It lands and is stunned for a moment.

There are several ways this can go. I will run with it any way you choose to go, so feel free to be creative.

You know, I was this close to having speak with animals memmed, where I could turn him against them....Gonna try the next best thing. By the way, there should also be a second dog, Peregrine, with Laffinger.

Laffinger approached the dire wolf, trying to read him, trying to understand where he stands--is he a prisoner, a willing accomplice. [wild empathy] Would he join Laffinger and fight for his freedom? Does he yearn for the open forest?

Salrantol, do you want to continue this MQ? You cannot use the direwolf before you hit ECL 7 so I thought I'd ask.

I believe I had informed you that I was going to change the quest reward to joining TLT (and changing the character to account for the Forgery clarification). So yes, I will continue it.

...and the dire wolf complied!

Laffinger attempts a fast mount, but fails, so he takes longer to get into Peregrine's saddle [Move]. He then attempts to entangle the dire wolf, centering it at the bottom of the map, directly below the center of the dire wolf [Standard].

Vines and Roots begin to obey the druid's command and grapple the wolf but the powerful beast easily breaks through the feeble plants [Reflex:18]. With a great leap, he is able to cover the distance to Laffinger who is dwarved by the huge beast.

Round 1:
Laffinger: Mount, Entangle [2/3 SL left]
Dire wolf: Double Move

Laffinger orders his dogs to attack [Move].
Bogart bites at the big dog. [17+3=20 Hit][5+3=8 damage] His attempt to trip fails [13 vs. 23]
Peregrine bites at the big dog. [3+3=6 Miss]
Laffinger then guides Peregrine to 5' step away [Free] and draws a scroll of produce flame [Move].
Caterane

06-19-06, 05:17 AM
The wolf growls once at the bite of the dog but continues to hunt the target he was commanded to kill. He lunges forward [Att:16] but the dogbite wound was apparently hurting more than he admitted: as soon as he shifted his weight on the forefoot, he almost fell prone.

Round 2
Laffinger: Handle Animal, 5ft step, draw scroll
Dire wolf: 5ft step, attack

Laffinger: 18/18 hp, [2/3 SL]
Dire Wolf: 37/45 hp
Salrantol

06-19-06, 05:44 AM
Bogart, being every bit as smart as the dire wolf, continues his attack. [18+3=21 vs. AC14 Hit][Damage 2+3=5][Trip 15+1=16 vs. 1+11+4=16 Tripped]
Peregrine follows suit. [13+3=16 vs. AC10 Hit][Damage 4+3=7][Trip* 19+1=20 vs. 10+11=21]
Laffinger then guides Peregrine to 5' step away diagonally up and to the right, where Laffinger reads from his scroll, casting produce flame.

Trip* was in case you rule the tie goes to the defender on trip. Note that Peregrine hit even if the wolf was standing upright, so nothing would be different except that the wolf starts his turn standing.
Caterane

06-19-06, 06:01 AM
The Direwolf suffered more wounds as the dogs asault him in defense of their master but the huge wolf was still about 8 times their weight. He opens his maw and encloses half the druid, then snaps his jaw shut. Blood ran in stream down his chin mixing with the saliva of the wolf. Miraculously the druid could hold fast to his reins instead of being torn off the riding dog. Still, the odds had shifted greatly in favor of the wolf.

Wolf attacks [Att:27; Dam:18] [Trip: 17 vs 13] [Ride: 23]

Laffinger: 0/18 hp, [2/3 SL]
Dire Wolf: 25/45 hp

@Sal: The higher modifier wins. PHB somewhere. The direwolf also gain +4 to resist trips for having more than 2 legs which wins the opposed check anyway.
Salrantol

06-19-06, 08:51 PM
Bogart, impassioned by the attack against his master, strikes back! [Attack 14+3=17 vs. AC14 Hit][Damage 4+3=7][Trip 3+1=4 Auto-Fail]
Peregrine 5' steps to flank and does likewise. [Attack 1!]
Laffinger consumes his handful of goodberries. [4+3=7]

If you rule that eating goodberries results in an Attack of Opportunity, then Laffinger would instead attack the dire wolf with produce flame. [Attack 5+2+2=9 vs. TAC11 Miss]
Caterane

06-20-06, 08:24 AM
The Direwolf lunges forward and bites wounded Laffinger once more which causes him to become unconcious.

The bearded man called off the attack and walked over to the halfling. He stabilized him, bound his arms, and took him with him. After an hour, he gave the still unconscious halfling to a passing merchant who was on his way to Gladius.

After two days, Laffinger awakes in one of the local temples.

I would be inclined to allow that you started the whole fight with goodberries in your hand even though you didn't mention them but you drew a scroll earlier and you need a free hand to cast so you cannot have the berries in hand.

Since you have only one action while disabled, you can only draw them. And yes, I'd say they provoke. There are things less distracting than eating which provoke an AoO. If you use a Standard Action while disabled, you lose a hitpoint and become unconscious so no gain here either. The fight is over anyway; no matter what you do.

Laffinger: draw Goodberries
Dire Wolf: Attack 30, Damage 15, Trip autosuccess, Fall from Mount damage: 1

I've refrained from attacking your allies because they will stay dead outside the Nimbus.

The quest failed. Note that you can only quest or miniquest once per level.

Laffinger fails to join the TLT. He gains 300 XP and 300 Gold.
