| MitzaVolchenko12-16-06, 11:28 AM | This is a miniquest for Manzarf. Manzarf is seeking a dire wolverine to beat into submission. If you are not Abyssal Stalker or myself, please do not post here until quest completion. Questlog: Manzarf provides the evening entertainment in trade for a new pet. Rewards: 2100XP and 2600gp, Dire Wolverine Ally Items Used: 1 potion CLW [CL1] Spells Used: None, raged once @ Anyone that cares, please note that Manzarf did not defeat his new ally, but was impressed enough by them to ask for one as his reward for being tortured more than half to death. One can never gain a wolverine or badge ally by defeating them in combat as their rage lasts until they or their opponent is dead. |

Soon enough, it turns to repulsion. Manzarf is a filthy dwarf for whom there is no deed to evil or a pleasure too twisted. He is dressed in dirty, ragged clothes and over them hangs a rusty breastplate. He has a black beard and almost black eyes stare from the depths of his primitive skull. Without his weapons Manzarf is easily mistaken as a beggar. It is not known where he lives, but many people suppose that his hiding place is found in the sewers below Gladius. Rumors say that he makes his living by working for the evildoers of Gladius as a stoneworker. Default Tactics Start with bow in hand and fire towards enemy if it's a caster or a flying creature. Try to make casters need to concentrate. Try quickly to engage enemy and begin melee with scythe. Try to trip the enemy if not very large. Once tripped, fly into rage and start mayhem. Use sunder if enemy carries a dangerous weapon or seems to have too high AC. If Manzarf loses one-third hp, then rage. If enemy mounted, try to drop him. If grappled, rage and try to injure the enemy with armor spikes. Fights results: 1. Jecht Moonstone (wellTHATstinks): WIN [+900XP] [+900gp] 2. | MitzaVolchenko12-16-06, 11:48 AM | Manzarf sat glaring at the other patrons of the Dismembered Elf. He was in a foul mood, and the rest of the patrons knew it. Of course Manzarf was always in a bad mood, and as the biggest monster in the dive tonight, they just avoided him. Only two people in the Dismembered Elf were mean enough in their own right to face him. One was the owner, Handar Galvinson, a dwarf nearly five times as wide as he was tall and who wore the bones of the elf that he named his bar for strung on gold wire about his neck. The other was Hrafn Handarsdottir. Many would think that she was unmolested because of her father's presence. Many would be wrong. Manzarf watched her make her way to his corner with his food and the half keg sized mug of ale. He considered asking her if she wanted a job. She was sturdy and certainly mean as a wolverine...but she'd want decent wages, demand attention, want gifts, probably get the wrong idea, whine all the time, and even Manzarf didn't want to tangle with Handar. Crossbow weddings were not his idea of fun. Best to stick with his original plan... |
| Abyssal Stalker12-16-06, 12:25 PM | Instead of hiring Hrafn, Manzarf sent her away after delivering the ale with some insults concerning Hrafn's physical appearance. Handarsdottir wasn't probably the truth about Hrafn, if one placed her next to his father. She didn't remind Handar at all. Not that she would be any prettier. No, she would be a burden too big and way too less use. And the beer they were serving? It was closer to urine than anything else. No. It needs to be an animal. Anything that thinks too much is too annoying. At least animals don't speak. A wolverine would be interesting. They are tough-tempered. And cruel. But they are also small. I could squash one with my boot. No, I'm looking for something bigger. Where the hell can I find something? |
| MitzaVolchenko12-16-06, 12:56 PM | The Dismembered Elf falls silent, and it is several seconds before Manzarf realizes it. Blinking slowly he tries to discern why it got so quiet. It then occurs to him that everyone is either looking at him or carefully not looking at him. |
| Abyssal Stalker12-16-06, 01:03 PM | "What the hell are you staring at?" Manzarf says in a loud voice, enhancing his rethorical question with some suspicisions of the parents of the audience. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-16-06, 01:49 PM | Most of the patrons that were staring now avert their gazes to look anywhere but his direction. Handar meets Manzarf's gaze steadily and grins to reveal filed sharp teeth. The smile does not appear in the least bit friendly. Hrafn steps behind the bar to stand by her father. "You have something you want to say to my little angel, don't you Manzarf?" |
| Abyssal Stalker12-16-06, 02:26 PM | "I was just admiring the beauty..." Manzarf gives a sleezy smile to the barkeeper, while slowly reaching for his scythe "...of a sea hag compared to your bastard daughter of a cow!" Manzarf barks the command word and his magical shield pops into life and flies to protect him while he rushes towards the doorway, swinging his scythe to keep possible attackers away from him. That's about it - Manzarf sees where this is going and he don't care to fight fairly, or even worse, if outnumbered. He'll go for the door if no one stops him. I forgot to mention it, but I'd like this MQ to be out of the cycle. If I beat the encounter, I should level up and I'd like to take care of that before entering a new 3FC. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-16-06, 07:58 PM | The door flies shut in front of Manzarf as patrons scramble to get out of his way. One hapless beggar gets caught by the scythe and sends a spray of blood across those nearby. "Now, I am sure you were just in a hurry to go buy Hrafn a gift to apologize for your rudeness, right?" Handar's tone is chillingly cheerful. "There is no need to go out to provide her with an apology gift. You can provide her with entertainment right here!" A large area has cleared around Manzarf. Handar is standing behind the bar with Hrafn at his side. She is holding a book and has a battle axe laying on the bar before her. Handar is casually slipping on a set of wicked spiked gauntlets and smiling. |
| Abyssal Stalker12-17-06, 09:27 AM | General tactics: If Hrafn is a caster, try to get her first. Rage and use power attack 3 for +12/+7 2d4+16 damage. After Hrafn, move to beat Handar. If his gauntlets seem to be something nasty, sunder them, otherwise just melee. Tripping isn't too good a choice, I'm guessing. Without saying anything more, Manzarf lets out a deep growl, and attacks in a berserk rage! His scythe swings wildly towards Hrafn's neck, ready to drink dwarven blood... |
| MitzaVolchenko12-17-06, 10:15 AM | What is with people attacking the rp npc's? No matter...got it covered. I am *not* writing full character sheets for NPC's that aren't combat oriented. I will give you full benefit of your rage when the real fight starts. I am sorry if I wasn't clear enough about Handar and Hrafn not being folks to mess with. Maybe I will translate their character sheets into CoCo legal NPC's after this, but Handar is lvl 16 and Hrafn is lvl 12 :P Manzarf whirls around and starts to advance on Handar and Hrafn, whipping himself into an awesome frenzy. The patrons have all stepped to the walls to give him room. Hrafn speaks a single word and points at Manzarf. Three stomping strides into his rush, Manzarf finds himself falling to land comfortably in the soft, clean white sand of a large pit. On all sides above the 20' pit wall are rows of benches ascending to accomodate perhaps 200 spectators. The air smells clean and sweet except for the slight tang of blood that never quite leaves a place that has seen much death. Confused, Manzarf looks up to see what appears to be a perfectly normal stone ceiling where mere heartbeats before, there was a dirty wooden floor. One three sides of the circular pit there are outlines of stone portals. On the fourth there is an elevated box that extends a little into the arena to provide a better view for its occupants. Whirling about, seeking his prey, Manzarf stops halfway through his third turn to see a file of well dressed dwarves and a few scattered humans filing into the room from a doorway out of his sight. They settle on their benches as Handar and Hrafn lead a quartet of sumptuously dressed dwarves to the box. A servant with a tray bearing a crystal decanter and pint glasses follows them. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-17-06, 10:23 AM | The Arena is about 60' in diameter with a 20' sheer wall up to the seating tiers. The floor is soft sand (still does not impede movement). The center opening outline appears to allow anything up to a huge creature to enter. The right and left hand openings only large. Judging by the slight tremble beneath stone sensitive dwarven feet, Manzarf would judge that there are probably further structures below it. Upon closer study, he can see sealed circles about 15' above the floor and spaced 2' apart all the way around the arena. Whether they are for water or some sort of trap, he cannot tell. Logical assumption is that this is an elicit fight operation. |
| Abyssal Stalker12-17-06, 11:04 AM | It's sometimes hard to guess if the NPCs are meant to be the encounter or not. And hey, I tried not to fight them (by running)! :) I might as well stow the scythe, quickdraw the bow and ready a shot at anything that comes out of the entrances. After that quickdraw scythe/guisarme, depending on the size of the creature. If it/they look like having reach, use guisarme, otherwise scythe because it's better. After a quick evaluation of the situation Manzarf cursed his bad luck. His instincts told him to switch to the bow and be prepared for anything that comes out. He wasn't an easy prey. If he would've been a little faster. Hrafn would be now head shorter and Manzarf would be drinking Handar's blood from one of those gauntlets...if only. "Come on..." The primitive dwarf growls... |
| MitzaVolchenko12-17-06, 12:15 PM | Manzarf stands poised withihs bow at the ready and doing his best to ignore the taunts and jeers of the crowd which has no settled in. The rich feminine laughter behind could only be Hrafn, and it fuels his anger. After what seems an eternity but is probably only heartbeats, the passages open and three dire wolverines amble into the arena. http://www.hwx.it/coco/coco.php;v=1;map=plains;a=Manz,M,46,39;b =Wi,L,44,45;c=Wii,L,44,34;d=Box,H,49,40; e=Wiii,L,39,40;o=Arena,45,39,6;style=s;o pacity=60 Map is an approximation. The arena represented in D&D squares does not truly show itself correctly, but it will give you an idea. The largest box is the spectator's box and does overhang the arena slightly. The wolverines will have flanking if you are not careful. They are not yet in rage (I never have felt that the EL=CR was a fair assessment or comparison, but there you have it). I am holding off your use of rage pending you actually choosing to use it with full scene description. Round 01 Manzarf's readied action goes off and he sends a pair of arrows streaking toward the dire wolverine to his left (12&12) missing. Manzarf drops his bow, quick draws his scythe and steps back five feet. Holding here for further tactic clarification. It is important to know if you still want to rage or if you want to be more defensive using combat expertise. | Abyssal Stalker12-17-06, 12:37 PM | Nah, don't rage quite yet. First, charge the one north of me with power attack 5 for +10 to hit and 2d4+17 damage. After that, try to maneuver so that I'm not flanked. It'll be hard, but I don't know if the wolverines are so intelligent that they would intentionally try to flank me. After the charge, switch to combat expertise 5 for +5 AC for 2 rounds. After that just rage and use power attack 3. Attack the wolverines one by one, so that only one rages at a time. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-17-06, 01:50 PM | You won't be able to charge. Sorry I didn't post map for what it will look like at the end of Round 1. They haven't actually done their attacks yet. No, they aren't smart enough to intentionally flank, but it may be hard for them not to. I will go ahead using CE for you for the first three rounds. Rage or continue with expertise? |
| Abyssal Stalker12-17-06, 02:54 PM | expertise seems to be working quite well. Until they crit me. It's right there waiting around the corner. They get 9 attacks per round, it's only a matter of time when the 20's start rolling. Use expertise until someone hits me. At that point enter rage and start using power attack. I just hope to drop one of them before that happens. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-17-06, 04:13 PM | Round 04 Manzarf attacks DWI (27) hits for (13), (12) misses and takes a 5' step back. DWI full attacks (29) hits for (13), (20, 11) misses. They did not crit you. Rage or Expertise? they are down to 6 attacks per round due to space. I don't know if you noticed that. |
| Abyssal Stalker12-18-06, 01:54 AM | Expertise until one is down, after that power attack + rage. Move back against the wall to prevent flanking. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-18-06, 02:56 AM | Will do. Probably won't finish it up until around 9-10pm EST tomorrow. |
| Abyssal Stalker12-18-06, 03:17 AM | That's OK. Take your time and use your best judgement if there is need for such calls. The potions of CLW are free to use if it looks like they could help Manzarf through this. This is tough, but I hope I can pull this through with a little luck. Anyway, you can run the fight with the general guidelines I've given. I won't complain if you need to decide something for me to get this done before the deadline. Thumbs up for Manzarf. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-20-06, 02:30 AM | Round 05 I am no longer updatingthe map. Manzarf is now standing withhis back to the wall. Manzarf attacks DWI (11, 7) but misses and takes a 5' step back (note this negates flanking and prevents the third from joining the fight). He staggers into the center of the arena unable to tell if it is the crowd's cheering or the rushof blood in his own ears that he hears. Still feeling the rage in his blood, he spies Hrafn and Handar applauding. He tips back his head and howls his frustration at knowinghe can't reach them. "Well done!" Handar laughs appreciatively. Hrafn nods her agreement and whispers something to her father. "I quite agree. He deserves a reward for such fine entertainment! Name your reward, brother of stone." "I want one of those!" Manzarfs whirls his scythe gesturing at the dead wolverines and splattering the still raucous crowd with blood as he does so. |
| Abyssal Stalker12-20-06, 02:52 AM | Phew, that was close! Thanks for running a tough fight. It's not easy to hack through 150+ hp. |
| MitzaVolchenko12-20-06, 03:43 AM | Try doing it with three-five minute lags onthe dice roller and it logging me out every other roll :P I honestly thought you were dead and then as I was scanning back at your tactics, I noticed that you told me to use the CLW's...I was actually so caught up in the nail biting waiting on the dice roller to see what was going to happen next that I lost track of them. |
