"Yes, my friend, I can smell the blood, too. It stains every stone of this place, yet it never ceases to flow. Together, you and I, we will seek out the cause of this abberration, this fracture in the circle of life. Together, we will restore balance to the land of Gladius. But to do that, we must first become familiar with this magic of eternal life."

The elven woman before you seems oblivious to your presence, spending most of her attention on the giant, war-clad bat beside her. She is dirty, ill-kempt, and slightly smelly, with twigs in her hair.

·Begin mounted in the center of the square, carrying my bow or a scroll in one hand and my buckler on the other.
·Buff with cat's grace and begin looking for opponent, buffing with resistance and virtue if opponent has not been sighted.
·Perform archery, maintaining 110' range during my shot, maximum range when not shooting, double-moving if necessary. Use oil of magic weapon on bow if protected (e.g. protection from arrows). If opponent is a caster, stay well out of spell range if possible.
·If opponent is immune to archery (e.g. Deflect Arrows), use produce flame followed by summons and buffs from scrolls. If that fails, cast shillelagh from scroll and melee. Remember the +1 to hit from higher ground.
·If opponent is invisible, rely on Prey's Scent and Predator's Blindsense. Ready faerie fire from scroll to use when opponent is located (e.g. if Predator or Prey attack them).
·If opponent is as good or better of an archer than I am, use entangle and obscuring mist to shut it down, then send in the animals and shoot blindly, moving if opponent starts shooting at my square. If entangle fails, melee with shillelagh and pray.
·If opponent is an energy-based spellcaster, buff with resist energy from memory instead of cat's grace. If they have two good types of energy damage, cast another resist energy from scroll.
·If at any time I am down by 8 HP or more, eat a handful of goodberries. If still injured by 8 or more HP, or injured again, draw wand of Cure Light Wounds into off-hand and use it.
·In all cases, remember to use Ride to use Prey as cover, and use Mounted Archery to negate any hits on him.

[Introduction]

The Great Tree welcomed the initiate into the Living Tree. Seeing great potention in the druid before her - the tree talked frankly - a whisper of leaves in the wind.

The forces of good and evil are both in relative check these days - and that is something we must make sure stays in place. For once one takes hold - then the wars and fights outbreak.

I'd like you to take charge and get to the southern tip of my forest - for there - I have heard rumors of a possible inbalance that must be restored. I am not sure what you will find there - but deal with it and return to me when you are done.
MindWandererB

Aerryl nods tersely. "I trust your intuition, ancient one. It shall be dealt with." She immediately sets off, riding Prey at a brisk pace, with Predator armored and in tow. As she approaches the appointed area, she readies her buckler and bow, peering among the trees and listening for anything dischordant.

Small issue I meant to bring up before - Prey is listed as a heavy warhorse - which cannot accompany you because it is a CR2 creature. Also - you haven't paid for a heavy warhorse. Since Prey couldn't have been a former animal companion (because that would be a heavy horse - not a warhorse) - you would need to pay for her. Also - if Prey used to be a class ally - you have to dismiss the companion before you can get a new one (so even if Prey was listed correctly as a heavy horse - you'd either have to pay for one or quest for one.

The forest is unusually quiet - though not overly so - considering the winter air and light snow falling. Aerryl travels to the brink of the forest and, finding nothing at first glance, starts to investigate the seeming "nothingness" that she is not satisfied with.

After a few moments, Aerryl finds evidence of blood on the ground and the tracks of a dragged body. They lead away from where she is now. Although she knows little of nature's creatures - she thinks that these might be the tracks of a wolf (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=348470).

Lucky roll on the knowledge check. What the heck are you doing with a druid with little survival and no knowledge - nature...?
MindWandererB

01-29-06, 03:18 PM
Well, crud. I tried to figure out those complex ally rules, and apparently failed. Max CR for non-class allies is ECL-4 minimum 1, if I'm reading it right (this time)? So Prey (properly Prey II, I suppose) is going to have to be a light warhorse, standard per MM. I actually did pay for a heavy warhorse but failed to note it aside from just deducting the amount from my gp (I think... I'll have to audit my expenses to make sure).

And as for not having Knowledge (nature) or Survival... not much use for them in the CoCo. Aerryl wasn't designed for quests/campaigns, so those skills just aren't that great.

Aerryl takes a closer look (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=349856) at the tracks, trying to determine their age. Assuming they aren't extremely fresh (i.e. within 10 minutes), she guides Prey along the path of the tracks, taking out a scroll of Hide from Animals and keeping eyes and ears peeled for movement. If they are that fresh, she'll use the scroll now, dismount, and move ahead.

Are the "wolf" tracks the draggers or the draggees? Also, I messed up the Survival, there's another +2 in there for a total of 18.
TelinArtho

01-30-06, 11:18 AM
Okay I'll treat Prey v.2 as a Light Warhorse.

After Aerryl has examined the tracks a little more, the tracks seem quite likely to have been made in the last few minutes. The tracks themselves seem to be wolf-like, but the dragged is unknown to Aerryl.

To be safe, Aerryl draws a scroll and reads it.

Just a strange issue with hide from animals - now your animal companion and your horse don't know where you are...
MindWandererB

01-30-06, 01:51 PM
Yeah, I was aware of that odd interaction. I originally bought the scroll when I was under the impression that scroll spells could be shared. Of course, it's moot now since I can't share with Prey anyhow.

With both Hide from Animals and her druidic abilities, Aerryl is confident in her ability to remain undetected. She dismounts and hustles ahead, trying to make the most of her spell duration, as the underbrush parts before her and closes behind her.

Apparently, your online time and mine are completely orthogonal. I'll let you make some assumptions to speed things along. Aerryl is going to go up ahead to scout the area, count the number of wolves, identify the victim, and get out of there well before her ten minutes are up--the moment the spell wears off, the wolves will be able to detect her lingering scent, so I want her well gone by then (she is untrackable, so that's good enough). She'll then go back to her animals and bring them along.

General tactics for dealing with the wolves, assuming that it is indeed a pack of wolves that I'm dealing with: leave the animals behind, downwind if possible, and within a single move of the wolves. Approach and attempt Wild Empathy (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=350812) (my sheet is wrong, the +5 is correct).

If combat is unavoidable (again assuming it's wolves), order Predator to Attack (Prey should Defend me without being ordered to), move behind Prey and cast Hold Animal on the biggest wolf (or, if all equal, an uninjured but close one). CDG with bow if successful. If I can do so safely, I'll then dump Resist Energy for SNAII-Hippogriff. Otherwise it'll just be straight combat: archery if possible, produce flame then shillelagh otherwise, healing with wand in off-hand when necessary (including to stabilize a downed ally).

I reserve the right to change any of the above if my assumptions are off, but go with that as far as it takes you. I'll check the board multiple times today and tomorrow.
TelinArtho

01-30-06, 02:13 PM
Confident in her spell to keep her invisible to a potential pack of wolves, Aerryl moves through the last of forest, tracking the steps in front of her.

Coming around a small bunch of trees (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=350854), Aerryl finds herself about 40ft away from a pair of wolves who seem to be guarding a body on the ground. As soon as Aerryl steps once more, one (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=350855) of the two wolves perks up and faces her direction.

It would seem that despite your Hide from Animals - this wolf seems to be able to hear you.

[Initiative (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=350856)]

Aerryl 17
Wolf 1 6 (this is the one who has turned towards you)
Wolf 2 12 (this one is "surprised")

You are 3 minutes of walking slowly away from your companions. This equates to approximately 900ft away through light forest.

I'll post a map in short order.
MindWandererB

01-30-06, 03:50 PM
I can see where your high quest-kill ratio comes from. You've neatly manipulated me into a position where none of my build's strengths--animal meat shields, range, mobility--are available. At least I won't suffer the XP/gp cut for an ally, since it isn't here.

Aerryl, although startled by the "wolf's" sensing her, quickly regains her composure and begins casting a spell. The local vegetation springs to life, attempting to constrain the beasts. Entangle, positioned with the edge of the effect right in front of Aerryl, with the worg (I assume, OOC) as close to the center as possible. I want it so that if either creature moves directly toward me to attack, the square they occupy is in the effect. She then calls out as loudly as she can to Predator for her to come and help. ETA 6 rounds at a run, if my calculations are correct.

If the worg is entangled, next round, 5' step back, drop Resist Energy for a SNAII Hippogriff. Position it right next to me, toes at the edge of Entangle. If it isn't, single-move back, draw my bow and shoot at it.
TelinArtho

01-30-06, 04:06 PM
Funny - I consider most of my kills either from hugely wrong luck (crits) or from players being unprepared. In my opinion, a druid without knowledge of nature - is wholly unprepared... Still - I don't think you'll have much problem here unless the crits come in again...

Aerryl calls upon the forces of nature and the ground around the wolves seems to writhe with life, vines shooting up to grab the wolves. However, the limber wolves are able to stay out of the worst of it.

The larger of the two wolves moves towards Aerryl.

End of Surprise Round; Round 1

The vines continue to try to grab at the wolves, and this time, the larger wolf is stuck fast (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=350960).

Aerryl steps away from the entangle field, and starts to cast a spell, calling upon nature again.

The smaller wolf moves out of the entangle field and ends directly next to Aerryl.

The larger wolf tries to break (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=350963) free, but cannot manage it.

End of Round 1; Round 2:

Aerryl finishes her spell and a hippogriff appears next to her.

I assume the hippogriff will attack the wolf since it is right in front of you. Also, what's your next action? The worg is 15ft away and entangled; the wolf is basing you.
MindWandererB

01-30-06, 08:36 PM
I have no ability to communicate with the hippogriff, and thus it "attacks [my] opponents to the best of its ability."

With one angry wolf directly in her face, Aerryl takes a step back, pulls out her bow, and fires (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351189) an arrow at the entangled one5' step to prevent an AoO, draw and fire, hit AC 15 for 5 damage including PBS.

Subsequent rounds: step back away from the little wolf and shoot at the big one. I don't imagine I'll need healing, but if at any time I am at 10 HP or less, use a handful of goodberries (I get 4d4 of them as a prebuff and can use up to 8 on myself) the first time, then CLW wand if it happens again. If I get tripped: if only the little one threatens me, I'll stand and take the AoO, 5' step, and shoot the bow, but if the big one threatens me, stay down, use the scimitar, and draw my CLW wand into my buckler hand as soon as I have a free move action. These tactics should be good enough to finish running the fight, but please stop and ask for new tactics if something unexpected arises.
TelinArtho

The hippogriff lays into the wolf with all of its natural weapons and completely demolishes (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351356)

Aerryl shoots off an arrow at the bigger wolf, and it sticks into the wolf's flank. The wolf lets out an evil howl of pain as it struggles (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351358) in the vines.

The hippogriff takes off and lands next to the wolf, attacking it with a claw, and ripping (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351366) a gash in its pelt.

Aerryl shoots another arrow and it lodges (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351369) deep into the wolf's neck.

The wolf concentrates on the foe before it, but the hippogriff dodges (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351372) the vicious bite.

The vines try to prohibit the hippogriff, but they fail. (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351373)

The hippogriff engages the wolf with all of its ability (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351375), and almost knocks (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351377) the evil beast to the ground.

Aerryl tries to finish it off, but the arrow flies left (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351383).

The wolf seems to be slowing down as its attacks become more feeble (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351385).

The hippogriff disappears as the vines entangle it, leaving the wolf wide open for an arrow into the skull (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351386) - dropping the fell beast.

Told you it wouldn't be too difficult. Now, if you remember - there's a body nearby... oh and Prey and Predator have answered your call.
MindWandererB

01-30-06, 10:40 PM
You wouldn't be saying how easy that fight was if I hadn't managed to delay the worg long enough to get off the SNAII. Toe-to-toe that would not have been pretty.

Now on the alert, Aerryl keeps her bow at the ready but gives both animals an encouraging pat for obeying her instructions. She then dismisses the entangle effect and approaches the body for an examination (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351387). Well, with a 23, if there's anything to be found, I find it. Also, technically, she never summoned Prey, since that would have taken a move action, but whatever, I doubt it matters.
TelinArtho

01-30-06, 10:52 PM
Although heavily wounded, it appears the man is alive - a human man of about 20. His clothes are tatters, but with some help, Aerryl feels he can be saved.
MindWandererB

01-30-06, 11:03 PM
Aerryl bandages (http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=351411) the man's wounds using strips of his own clothes. Assuming he's unconscious: She then hoists him up onto Prey's back and leads her mount back to the headquarters of the Living Tree. If he's conscious, she'll just wait for him to speak first.
TelinArtho

01-30-06, 11:11 PM
Aerryl uses Prey to carry the unconscious man back to the Living Tree. Once there, the man is healed back to consciousness. Once awake, he finds who has saved him.

Thank you - I am told you are the one who saved me. I am afraid I was likely left for dead.

You see two weeks ago, I was kidnapped and taken away from the city and anyone who could help me. Apparently, whoever I was helping by being away no longer needed me - for they put me to the wolves.

Who am I? Why I'm magistrate Derimbar (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=567207).
MindWandererB

01-30-06, 11:24 PM
A magistrate--a force for law in the city. An honorable enough profession, as long as the forces of chaos were in balance. With an ear to this, Aerryl asks him, "Tell me your story. Who kidnapped you, and why?"

I'm assuming the quest is considered complete except for RP. Please update the quest summary (I doubt every one of my arrows survived), and I will then update my character sheet.
TelinArtho

01-31-06, 10:19 AM
I do not know who kidnapped me - surely though the disappearance of a magistrate has drawn attention? No? How very strange indeed...

Yes - just RP for now as long as you want - or even bring it back to the guild thread. This is an open questline that I started with Feradeth (who died on this quest). I've got to get everyone else up to date though, so I may not be able to do much more for now.
MindWandererB

01-31-06, 03:56 PM
"Surely you must have some clue as to why you were kidnapped. Did you have any unusual cases lately? Or any that were scheduled to take place during the past two seeks? Do you play favorites, or have a personal agenda?" Aerryl lists all these possibilities in a matter-of-fact tone, even the accusatory ones. "As to whether your disapperance has draw attention, I would not know--I seldom involve myself in the city's affairs."

Take your time on the RP, there's no deadline for that. I'd like to keep it in this thread until I have enough to report back to the Tree. Oh, one more thing: Aerryl's Free Activity this week was to teach Predator the "Defend" trick; could you add that to the summary as well? Thanks.
