Character Background: Bailin was always kind of a loaner among the wood elves, growing up he played the games with the kids and alwsys had a knack for winning Hide and Seek. He honed this skill and became one of the best hunters in the area, he wasn't know really for the ability to track pray but more for finding a spot and remaining unseen for as long as it takes. Now he didn't do bad for himself but learned there were better ways for people of his skill to make a living and was soon contacted by a thieves guild that had interest in him. After a few test and jobs he adopted the name most people use in refference to him, The Shadow. He would do about anything you asked if the price was right for him and it envolved his expertise. It wasn't long until he heard of the great arena city of Gladdius, were a mere commonner could etch out fame and fortune, he really liked the sound of the fortune part. So here he now finds himself ready to try his hand at the arena and already securing some possible work with a new guild. Life is currently good. | Zevox05-19-07, 12:41 AM | Baelin had had little to do since his return to the EHTC. He had taken up residence in his old quarters again, but the present state of peace among the city had left his services in little demand, resulting in him feeling rather bored for many weeks. Until, that is, a rather unique event in his life occurred, heralded by a visit from the young Maenad Annalina. Dressed in her usual eccentric clothes, she entered his quarters after a polite knock, looking a little confused. "Ah, Baelin, you're here. Good. It seems someone wishes to make an, ah, unusual request of you. I don't know if you've heard since your return, but while you were away, Asran found us some allies in a reclusive, cult-like group of assassins called the Shadow Stars. Well, one of their members has apparently heard of you, and..." The Maenad is interrupted by a low voice coming from behind her. "I can speak for myself, thank you." Annalina steps aside, and from behind her steps a female Halfling, short and thin even for her kind, dressed in leather armor, carrying simple weapons, wearing a strange silver emblem about her neck, and moving just as Baelin would expect from an assassin. "I am Cara Lightfoot, devotee of Illenthranatar and one of the Shadow Star Assassins. I have heard tell of your skill, Right Hand of Death, and I wish to see if your reputation is deserved. So I have come to issue a challenge to you." Cara pauses to look Baelin in the eye, gaging his response, before continuing in her hushed tone. "I have been given a target by my mistress recently. A man by the name of Pelas Anor. He is not easy prey. I propose we compete to see which of us can complete the contract first. Whoever does receives the reward I was promised for its completion, plus half that again from the loser, and of course the satisfaction of knowing they are the superior at our trade." She continues to look Baelin in the eye, awaiting his reply. Sorry this took so long - I tried to set it up earlier today, but for some reason the forums wouldn't let me quote Baelin's sheet. Anyway, much as I'd like to RP this fully out, lets try to do it in large chunks to make up for lost time, eh? Presuming you accept, the first step is to find out info on your target - where he is, who he is, etc - so let me know how you want to do that (Cara won't tell you, and the Guild doesn't know at present). And just so you know, there will be two ways to win this. One the obvious, and the second an alternative option should you fail at the obvious that I'm hoping you could figure out easily enough. |
| Malither7605-19-07, 03:56 AM | I have nothing to prove to you or your so called group of assassins. Groups are a way of making up for personal weakness. But I will play your game, as this guild is one that I helped establish with an old friend and if they wish to test me I can't refuse. Know that you play a dangerous game here little one. Now I know your face, unless your smarter than I give you credit for.. Baelin never meets in public unless disguised. So am I to assume the game starts now. If so then let us be off. Baelin will use his vast recourses to gather info. First place he will check into will be the bookies. they must keep addresses on people that place bets to collect. Bribe for the addresses and how frequent of a better the man may be. I will also use my ties to the legislation to see if this may be a prominent man in the city, since we had both the secretary of trade and commerce and the secretary of defense in office at one time. This should get a good enough start. |
| Zevox05-20-07, 12:05 AM | The Halfling smirks at Baelin's comments. "You know less than you think, Hand of Death. I will warn you once not to underestimate those who dwell in Illent's shadow. But yes, the game starts now. Let us see what comes of it." With that, the Halfling departs, melting into the shadows as any seasoned killer could. ----------------------------------------------------------- Baelin sets out to investigate his new target. He meets with little initial success, as those he attempts to interrogate either know nothing about the man or will say nothing. However, with some persistence, he comes across mention of the man. He is employed by the CEF as an ambassador, and apparently has recently been seen mostly in the southeastern portions of the city, near the borders of Gauterix and Merisia. Further investigations reveal little else until later in the night, when at last more precise information comes from a corrupt official Baelin bribes. The man is a priestly initiate of an obscure faith, not very high in their ranks, but charismatic and peace-loving, and known as a man of strong faith and morals, which is no doubt my the celestials chose to employ him. He is employed as a link between the celestials and the Druids of the Living Tree. He spends most of his time in the southeastern districts so as to be able to meet with representatives of the Druids quickly should the need be, and there are rumors that he has a powerful bodyguard, though it has never been seen. His is currently staying at a small inn in Merisia called the Sparrow's Song, and is scheduled to meet with a representative of the loyalists the following morning. So then, when/where do you hit him? The inn, the road, the meeting? Another time/place entirely? |
| Malither7605-20-07, 02:01 AM | Thank you for the information, I will not forget your assistance. Now I need you to do one more thing. As an employee of th CEF I hope you can persuade the man he is in danger. I will have a contract forged that marks him as a target. it will include also the information you just told me and of course a signature from my little halfling friend and her acceptance of the contract. You will deliver this message and proof gained from one of your so called spy's. Convince the man it is not safe were he is even with his bodyguard. They may be coming as an assault team. Do and say whatever you need to, in fact I will go with you I will be the spy that intercepted this information for the CEF's behalf. I will go in disguise and we will convince the man to stay at a more secure location picked out for the evening. I will part ways as you lead him to the new inn, I will be waiting in the room that you will have already paid for. Do this and your service will not be forgot. |
| Zevox05-22-07, 12:37 AM | With a little more coin passing hands, the man agrees. Baelin finds no trouble getting the contract forged, experienced as he is in finding those who specialize in such matters. He meets up with the man again a short while later, wearing an excellent disguise, and in short order they have arranged to meet his target. The man is obviously upset at this interruption of his schedule, but calms when he sees the contract. Being unfamiliar with such documents, he is unable to determine it is a forgery, and is readily persuaded to move to a more secure location - the Bard's Delight, an inn frequented by some of the city council members. The plan hits an unexpected hitch, however, as the group exits the Sparrow's Song and turns down a side lane on their way to the new location. Baelin is about to part ways from the group when everyone hears a chanting coming from an alley about fifty feet off, and Pelas suddenly stiffens. A second chant comes apparantly from nowhere, however, and Pelas is suddenly back to normal. "Magic!" he gasps, and more chanting can be heard from both directions. A deep voice comes from overhead, speaking softly, "Someone evil lurks in the shadows... and beside you! The spy!" Pelas' eyes widen as they go to Baelin, and he begins to flee, but suddenly halts, though he does not appear immobile as before. More chanting comes from above before Baelin can quite react, and a bolt of lightning flashes down. The agile assassin dodges it with ease, and looks up to see what must be the bodyguard the man was rumored to have - a large serpentine creature with multicolored feathers and a serious, confident expression on its face. I'm guessing you can figure out what your foe is. It noticed you showed up on its detect evil scan. It won initiative, and you saved vs its lightning bolt and took no damage from evasion. Its 10' in the air above you, and the nearest cover is the shadowy alleys - one 30' behind you, one 50' in front of you (the one the other chanting came from). |
| Malither7605-25-07, 11:36 AM | sorry for my absence a lot of crap happened last week including spraining my wrist, it was too hard for me to type with one hand. but I almost 100% now. Baelin smiles up at the Beast as he cast invisibility from memory and moves after Pelas. need to know were this develops and the distance between myself, Pelas and his bodyguard to know the next best coarse of action. |
| Zevox05-26-07, 11:37 PM | Baelin moved after his target, but the keen ears of the serpentine bodyguard heard him in spite of his skill at making himself unheard. It rattled off another spell that was just jibberish to Baelin, and a translucent globe of force encloses Pelas. The man seems panicky for a moment, but then calms down, smiles, and sits, his back to one wall of the globe, apparently content to wait this out. Don't worry about it. I haven't exactly been making lightning responses to your posts, either. Just not used to running MQs I guess. I presumed you'd move at half speed for no MS penalty. Even so, it heard you - no enough to pinpoint, but enough to know your general heading - hence its spell (Resilient Sphere, if you weren't sure from the description). You're 30' away from and 10' below the monster, and about 45' from Pilas (not that that matters now). |
| Malither7605-27-07, 02:42 AM | Baelin thinks to himself what it must be like to have henchman so willing to die for you, the beast could have left well enough alone and just went away but now it forces me to deal with it. Baelin taps tattoo of precog offense, and Moves silently into sneak attack range with bow/ point blank range. preferably hiding behind some cover if any is available just in case this guy decides he wants to see invis. |
| Zevox05-28-07, 02:26 AM | Baelin creeps within sneak attack range of the creature, unheard, and strings his bow as the psychic tattoo goes into effect. The Creature peers about, obviously unable to see Baelin, then suddenly disappears from sight itself, without any apparent spellcasting beforehand. Like I said, nearest cover is in the alleys, which are out of sneak attack range at this point. It went invisible. Your move. |
| Zevox05-28-07, 03:55 PM | With how late things are getting, you should probably just give me tactics. I'm guessing you figured it out, but you're dealing with a Couatl. I've altered its spell list some to reflect its role as a guardian, but don't worry, not all make it a better combatant (one of its second-level spells is Zone of Truth, for example). The area is much as I've described at this point. Wide road, with alleys along the sides. Theres plenty of cover in the alleys, but none on the road. |
| Malither7605-29-07, 02:24 AM | Not much I can do now but wait and hunt like my old days in the woods. Baelin thinks to himself... Baelin will move up near the MARK, if there is cover withing 30' of him then get behind it. If this is achieved he will then pick up a stone and toss it away to make some noise all in the efforts of trying to pinpoint the beast. If behind cover Baelin will tap tattoo of chameleon and drink elixir of hiding and snipe at a pinpointed spot. If creature is visible withing 30' and Baelin is hiding go ahead and Rapid shot sneak attack him. If outside of that continue to snipe. |
| Zevox06-02-07, 03:48 PM | Baelin sulks over to the man entrapped in the sphere, waiting, watching, and listening. Meanwhile, the sound of casting comes from the air above him, but nothing appears. Ducking into the alley nearest his target, Baelin taps a tattoo of chameleon to better hide himself. Again, he hears casting above him, but nothing appears, so it wasn't offensive. He drinks an elixir to aid in hiding further and continues to wait. And then things change. The serpentine creature reappears in the sky as his spell conjures webbing along the walls Baelin is skulking between. Struggling, Baelin manages to escape the webs. Weaving its body through arcane motions, the serpent sends another bolt of lightning running down the alley, but Baelin dodges it. Baelin sneaks to within 30' of the Coautl, then readies to fire a sneak attack on further casting. When the Coautl begins to chant again, he fires, sinking the arrow into the creature's coils and ruining the spell. Rounds 3-4: You move and hide, tapping tattoo of chameleon. Coutal casts spells that don't break his invisibility. Round 5: You drink elixir, Coutl flies in closer and casts Web (save made). Round 6: You use escape artist to get out of the webs. Couatl casts lightning bolt (save made). Round 7: You move into sneak attack range and ready a shot. Couatl begins casting, your shot interrupts for 25 damage (it can't make the concentration check). Round 8: ??? With the alley behind you webbed, it would be difficult to get in to use it for cover, and likely you would just get webbed again. Any other ideas? Hint: your spells could really help. |
| Malither7606-03-07, 04:49 AM | Baelin will cast obscuring mist and fill the ally, he will then move to the edge silently and hiding. From there Baelin will snipe, if creature is within 30' go ahead and 5' step out and full attack rapid sneak attack it. Next move back into mist and hide again. repeat if it stays within 30' if further than that keep sniping. |
| Zevox06-03-07, 09:02 PM | Baelin casts a spell of his own, and a thick mist billows out from his position, obscuring a large area. Though Baelin cannot see beyond it at the moment, it gives the serpent pause as well. It begins a chant, then twin bolts of fire streak into the mist, slamming into Baelin. As the fire burns his flesh, it also melts away a tunnel in the mist, giving him a clear view of the Coautl. Baelin steps back into the mist, maintaining his view of the Coautl but cutting it off from seeing him, and fires a shot, but the arrow bounces off a magical ward of the Coautl's. The Coautl chants away again, and flames again leap from his form, but this time rather than concentrated rays it is a sheet of fire that burns away most of the mist, falling just short of Baelin himself. Baelin strings his arrows and lays into the serpent, trying to end this before it eliminates his mist completely. Two of the arrows glance off the creature's wards, but one finds a soft spot in its flesh, and blood spurts from the wound. The creature glances at Pelas, a pang of regret on its face, and then shimmers and is gone. You're not in the alley anymore, but the tactic works anyway. Round 8: Baelin casts Obscuring Mist. Coautl casts scoching ray (both rays hit, total 23 damage). HPs: Baelin 24/27, Coautl 33/58 Round 9: Baelin moves back into the mist, returns to the edge of the hole the rays made, and shoots, but misses (20 vs FF AC 22). Coautl casts Burning hands, burning away most of the mist but falls short of Baelin (15' cone, 20' mist). Round 10: Baelin rapid shoots the Coautl, making one hit for 34 damage. Coautl plane shifts away (should technically be unconscious, but I'm using creative license). Congratulations, you win. We can continue the RP if you wish. Sorry I've been so long in doing this. Its pretty obvious I'm not very good with quests I didn't have time to prepare for, so I've asked pitlords not to randomly assign me them anymore. |
| Malither7606-04-07, 12:31 AM | not a problem, it was frozen so time was not a problem. Baelin waits and walks around the bubble toying with the man inside. He then slips into the shadows waiting for the effect to end. Once it drops he unleashes a volley of arrows at the poor man ending his seemingly important life. Baelin then with the same precision he deals death in cleans up the scene and packs up the body. He heads back to the EHTC.I will need one of the meeting rooms. and please have one of the mages do a sending spell or use whatever means you use to contact our little halfling friend Cara from the shadow star assassins. Let her know the game is over and she can find me here with the proof. Baelin sends word to Annalina that he has championed the guild in this little game and if she wished to be in the meeting, she was welcome to come. Baelin then lays the body out on the table unwrapping it to reveal the man Pelas, He pulls up a chair, props his feet and relaxes at least as much as an assassin can relax as he waits for the halfing. |
