Optional Information
Sdentch the mortal (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=6966406) perished while fighting valiantly against the high priest of the Denthian Hordes, a Thaumaturge by the name of Kraegin.
Now that the Church of Denth is growing in power, Sdentch has returned to the prime as a representative of Farlanghan. Her mandate in this new life is ultimately to crush the growing power of the Denthian church here in Gladius. Her secondary edict is to protect and liberate any children being indoctrinated and or threatened by the Church of Denth and its teachings.
I've attempted to keep Sdentch's ability scores and theme as true to original form as possible while still tricking the hell outta her damage and upping her AC and speed and overall survivability.
She will be almost solely a quest character, but will join the Warfare Alliance if she is welcomed back by her longtime "family".

The old walking man had sent her back to Gladius, to her sister and she watched as one of Denth's followers nearly took Auburn from her once and for all.

Back "home" at WAR, she didn't feel complete, as if there was still something wrong. Word was spreading throughout the city of the attacks by Denth, and it was only a matter of time before they started beating on the guild's doors and the doors of the citizens of the city. She was exhausted from the trip home - crossing over from the Twin Paradises to the material plane was more work than she'd like to admit - and she missed her kitty...

She closed her eyes.

A crash at the front door of the guild hall alerted her that perhaps it would be sooner than later. A foul voice called for her.

SDENTCH! Time to meet your death. Time to feel Denth feast on your bones. Come or I shall personally flay these children before their mothers' eyes.

The voice was cruel, mocking and most evil.

I'm setting this up as a dreamscape - so things might not always react the way you expect. Treat the combat as within the arena - and like always - no prebuffing...

M'kay. Btw, I just edited Sdentch's sheet with some little stuff (19 potions of CLW, and fixed the pricing on her Mithral Breastplate). I'm ahead of deadline, so it shouldn't be any problem.

"Whozzat? Bad-magics-man, izzat you? You leave those kids alone! I'll come!"

Sdentch vaults out of her large bed and beats feet down the abnormally elongating hallway. The door to the old Main Hall seems to get farther away with each step, and it feels as if she runs in thick mud.

Screaming in fury, she picks up her feet and sprints until her heart feels as if it is going to explode in her chest. Suddenly, the door is right in front of her and she erupts through it, smashing the planks to kindling and needling the hell out of her forearms.

There, just inside the far doorway stands...

I'm having second thoughts about your opponent... I really hope I didn't send you against an auto-kill.

Sdentch stopped dead in her tracks at the sight of the creature. A distant relative of something that might once have been a barbazu, this one is twice the regular size, deformed with the markings of a servant of Denth - insectile claws for hands and wings not unlike those of a dragonfly. The entire creation was shielded in blue scales.

And in its hands, the mark of a barbazu - a cruel saw-toothed glaive.

Upon seeing Sdentch, it smiled evilly, letting go of the unseen reigns that kept the women and children by its side. They fled without pause - terrified beyond their wits.

What? Where's your kitty? Oh - that's right... she's over there.

Reluctant to even take a look, Sdentch could see the dismembered body of her pet against a wall not more than 40ft away. The barbazu cackles with laughter.

If you want we can go on with the banter for a bit. Otherwise, we can get right into it - good luck.

Once you are ready for the combat - you win initiative and your opponent is 100ft away.

I'm having second thoughts about your opponent... I really hope I didn't send you against an auto-kill.

Autowin for the monster or for Sdentch?
TelinArtho

08-01-07, 03:33 PM
Frankly - there's not much that Sdentch will auto-win against in the CR11 range (unless its an opponent that cannot fly and has no ranged weapons...). So my statement is a concern that it is an auto-win for the creature. And frankly - it definitely isn't an auto-win - especially with Sdentch's damage-dealing ability. But it is likely to be a bloody battle no matter what...

"You're not Bad-magics-man. You're just bad. You killed my kitty, and that just means you're dumb, 'cause they always come back out."

Sdentch slaps a hand on the tan bag that's hanging from her belt, but drops it away slowly.

"But I don't wanna let you hurt my animals. I wanna hurt you myself. Now get ready to go back to Denth. The Old Man commands it!"

As she speaks this last challenge, the orc-angel pulls out a silver vial with the symbol of Farlanghan engraved on it and anoints her shield with the contents. An aura of good emanates from the defensive item, and the creature across the way shields its eyes from a glow that only it can see and feel, even from that distance.

Sdentch sets her feet determinedly and raises her shield in invitation.

"Come on!"

Why is it that we always forget to announce to the world that we want our minis out of cycle? Is that even still possible? If so, that's what I want.
TelinArtho

08-01-07, 03:59 PM
Miniquests cannot be out of cycle anymore - so that answers that one.

The barbazu does not seem to move, but yet it closes distance with Sdentch - suddenly behind her and no more than 60ft away. It cackles again at the mention of the Old Man.

Say it with me now... Far-lang-han. Farlanghan. Oh - and he's not going to save you now. The beast within you - the one that helped Denth back to power is going to see to it.

And let's not forget the role you played in helping Denth. Denth certainly hasn't forgotten...

The barbezu sneers at the memory as it is recalled by Sdentch like a wound from a war long ago.

In battle terms it only moved closer 40ft. The distortion part is all-dream.
TheMagister

08-01-07, 04:18 PM
I'm getting the movement effects as dream-stuff. Once you identify the elasticity of the combat, I'm okay with it (as long as you afford me the same chance at the fun!).

On a more serious note, is there anything notable about the creature's equipment other than its glaive?

Realizing that the creature tries to bait her doesn't make the accusations any less painful or alleviate any of the old guilt. Sdentch can feel the rage pounding at her skull behind her eyes. Her circlet glows (unseen by her) and she shakes her head, narrowing her eyes.

"Mean words. But you're a mean guy. Ever been killed by kindness? I can do you a favor and send you home double-quick. Or maybe all you can do is talk?"

Sdentch moves a little closer and sets her shield, eye watchful.

Move to 40' away (so 20' move) and take total defense.
TelinArtho

08-01-07, 04:29 PM
No other equipment that you see. Giving this thing equipment would have been nasty beyond all reason... in fact - its nasty on its own.

And of course - you can use the environment as much as you like - just make sure you state the real combat actions in plain terms as well.

The barbazu laughs at the simple orcess's words. Perhaps your old man should have spent some time on those brains of yours. Killed by kindness? Tell me - how does this feel?

All of a sudden, the barbazu takes to the air above Sdentch, glaive threatening her severely. Pointing it at her, it erupts in a bolt of lightning, striking her hard. Some of the old man's power absorbs the blow however, but it still leaves Sdentch badly hurt.

Flies to a point directly above Sdentch, 20ft from the barbazu's feet to the ground. Once there, it breathes lightning on her for 21 damage (failed reflex save, damage 31-10 for resistance)
TheMagister

08-01-07, 05:38 PM
Darn. A half-dragon. How many templates and/or advancement HD does this thing have? Nevermind. I don't wanna know. So it threatens me, eh? Well, it can't trip with that glaive, so we'll chance the superhit. Can't just stand here and wait to be full attacked.

Sdentch grunts, and allows the electricity to run its course through her body and into the ground.

"Hurts. Kinda like this!"

Sdentch dips a little at the knees and waist and jumps impossibly high, incredibly fast. The prepared demon gets a swipe at her as she approaches, but it can't stop her as she comes, shield leading -- a rising star.

Okay. Boots of haste for the extra dodge to AC and +1 to hit, fight defensively (for the +2 dodge, -4 to hit), frenzy (for the +2 AC and +2/+3 to hit/dmg) and approach.

Total AC on this approach: 32 [27+2(frenzy)+2(defensive)+1(haste)]
Total to hit: +17-4(defensive)+2(frenzy)+1(haste) = +16
Total Damage: 2d6+17 (good, magic, cold iron)
TelinArtho

08-01-07, 05:58 PM
Sdentch dodges to the side of the wicked glaive as it turns into a snake, biting at her heels. Leaping into the air, her wings glow as they take her up towards the dragon-fly barbazu. Her shield slams into it - but it seems to absorb it like a wall and looks none the worse for it. It raises a wicked claw at Sdentch, holding the glaive in one hand, but somehow manages to catch Sdentch only on her armor.

Wow - it misses on the AoO, you miss on the move and attack, it misses again on a single attack. It didn't full attack because it spent a move action to hover. I did forget a +1 to its attack roll for higher ground - but it would still miss - so no biggie for now.

Your action...
TheMagister

08-01-07, 06:03 PM
THAT THING IS A MONSTER! A +22 to hit?! Good God! If the Armor Class on it is any higher than 26, you can kiss Sdentch goodbye. Drop the defensive posture, and go for as much damage as possible. Come on, CRITICAL THREAT (bless weapon!).

Should have four attacks this round: +18/+18/+18/+13. Damage is still 2d6+17 (good, magic, cold iron).
TelinArtho

08-01-07, 06:05 PM
Don't worry - the ac is not that high. If I had bought equipment for it - well that would be a different matter.

Also - I believe the attacks should be +20 (last round they were +16 and this round you are taking away a -4 penalty for fighting defensively).

EDIT - nevermind - forgot about the whirling penalty
TheMagister

08-01-07, 06:06 PM
last round Sdentch only took a single attack. While whirling in a full attack she takes a -2 to each attack (like rapid shot).
TelinArtho

08-02-07, 10:28 AM
Sdentch and the massive barbazu trade blows as two fierce tigers battling over a tender morsel. Sdentch seems to gain the upper hand as her shield slams three times into the massive brute, but it barely slows the barbazu down.

The barbazu connects with a claw and a vicious bite, burning Sdentch with the vile evil of the creature.

Well - you got lucky here - probably enough to decide the fight already. Three hits for 67 damage; Sdentch is hit twice for 20+2-5 (DR) and 8+1-5. I intended the barbazu to be frenzying at this point, but I forgot that in the roller. Luckily it doesn't make any difference on the hits, but it does mean its AC is even lower.
TheMagister

08-02-07, 10:40 AM
AC is still 30, since all Sdentch dropped was the defensive fighting. But you're right, frenzying would raise that 28 to 30 anyway, wouldn't it?

Keep whirling. BORE in. ;) End it with a crit! WHEE!

"Flarghanhan is stronger than Denth! Now get outta my home!"

TelinArtho

Sdentch whirls and whirls with her shield - dealing deadly force blows at every turn. Despite two more solid blows - to her amazement, the barbazu still stands, cackling like always.

The scene around her dances and changes into the fire and brimstone of Hell. The cackling giant slams into her with its claws and thrusts its disease ridden beard into her face. Weary from the attacks, Sdentch shakes it off as best she can.

Two more hits for Sdentch, dealing 23 and 26 damage for a total of 116. The barbazu hits with each claw and deals 20-5 and 23-5. This allows it to hit with its beard for 20-5. Total damage to Sdentch is 69.

I'm not bothering with the disease since it would have no effect on the game before the effect is taken away after the fight.
TheMagister

08-02-07, 11:25 AM
Healing does nothing productive in this fight: 4d8+7 vs. all that minimum damage is a losing bet. I'm hoping it's running low on hps. Keep up the pressure and pray to the Old Walkin' Man! Smite evil on the first attack (duh...forgot about that).

"Ungh! N-no! You can't win!"
TelinArtho

08-02-07, 11:50 AM
In a blinding flurry, the orcess-warrior slams into the barbazu time and again. Slowly the flames licking at her heels fade away, the brimstone calms to granite and the barbazu fades away into nothingness.

Nice way to end it. Close it up as well as you like.

Sdentch hits 4 times for 104 damage to take it down.

Every bearded devil carries a sawtoothed glaive.
A bearded devil stands 6 feet tall and weighs about 225 pounds.
Combat
Bearded devils are aggressive and love to fight. They revel in their battle frenzy, spreading mayhem among their foes.
A bearded devil’s natural weapons, as well as any weapons it wields, are treated as evil-aligned and lawful-aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.
Spell-Like Abilities: At will— greater teleport (self plus 50 pounds of objects only). Caster level 12th.
Infernal Wound (Su): The damage a bearded devil deals with its glaive causes a persistent wound. An injured creature loses 2 additional hit points each round. The wound does not heal naturally and resists healing spells. The continuing hit point loss can be stopped by a DC 16 Heal check, a cure spell, or a heal spell. However, a character attempting to cast a cure spell or a heal spell on a creature damaged by a bearded devil’s glaive must succeed on a DC 16 caster level check, or the spell has no effect on the injured character.
A successful Heal check automatically stops the continuing hit point loss as well as restoring hit points. The infernal wound is a supernatural ability of the bearded devil, not of the weapon. The check DC is Constitution-based.
Beard (Ex): If a bearded devil hits a single opponent with both claw attacks, it automatically hits with its beard. The affected creature takes 1d8+2 points of damage and must succeed on a DC 16 Fortitude save or be infected with a vile disease known as devil chills (incubation period 1d4 days, damage 1d4 Str). Damage is dealt each day until the afflicted creature succeeds on three consecutive Fortitude saves, the disease is cured magically, or the creature dies. The save DC is Constitution-based.
Battle Frenzy (Ex): Twice per day, a bearded devil can work itself into a battle frenzy similar to the barbarian’s rage (+4 Strength, +4 Constitution, +2 morale bonus on Will saves, –2 AC penalty). The frenzy lasts for 6 rounds, and the bearded devil suffers no ill effects afterward.
Summon Devil (Sp): Once per day a bearded devil can attempt to summon 2d10 lemures with a 50% chance of success, or another bearded devil with a 35% chance of success. This ability is the equivalent of a 3rd-level spell.
Breath weapon (Ex): 60ft line of lightning - 6d8 electricity damage, Reflex DC23 for half damage

Man, abysmal (pun intended) rolls throughout. I had a hunch that the bad guy was on his last legs (we were both in the teens! HA!). With better rolls, it wouldn't have been anywhere near as close. 36 str! Yeesh.

"Get back to Denth! And you can tell him I'm comin'!"

Gratt nearly jumps out of his skin as Sdentch sits bolt upright in her bed behind him and shouts in a voice filled with menace and ill-will. The sound chills his blood, and he whirls to face her, dinner tray still in hand. Soup, bread, and fruit flies everywhere.

But her eyes are still closed. She lays back down and turns over onto her stomach and her wings drape to the floor on either side of the four-poster. One of the perpetually dusty feathers brushes a roll and sends it skittering across the floor and between Gratt's legs. Sdentch mutters uneasily and her fist shoots out and slams into the wall, spiderwebbing cracks in a plate-sized area.

Shaking his head and muttering, Gratt picks up the ruined dinner and gets out quickly, thinking that perhaps this isn't the safest location in the Stronghold at just this moment... One ill-aimed twitch could cave his skull in!

As he shuts the door quietly behind him, he hears another shout, and a brutal thud.

An ill-omen, when the celestially-born have nightmares...

Actually - with the frenzy, it still had 39 hp left. Still though - the AC was low enough that you didn't need to worry too much about it at that point.

I'm glad you succeeded though - because I've not done much with advanced/templated creatures before and this helps me guage the difficulty of the campaign (I'm starting to feel like my group is going to walk all over everything I put out there...).

And if it hadn't rolled a 4 on the AoO? Sdentch loses. No, I think it was plenty powerful enough. Had me sweatin'.
