Always try to Dispense with Displays (I.e. hide manefestation)

Share all buffs with Quartz when in range.

In general attempt to keep range utilizing terrain, conditions, and abilities to the fullest extent possible. Use deepcrystal bow as main method of combat.

More Specific Tactics:

Begin mounted on Lightning (Light Warhorse). Quartz will also be mounted on Lightning.

Delay Quartz's action on the first round such that he moves immediately before Valen. If Valen ever falls asleep, Quartz will take a standard action to wake him up.

If Valen is blinded use powerstone of Synestate (feel light).

Assuming no initial contact with the enemy, Valen manifests Precognition-Offensive, then Force Screen, 1 PP each, sharing with Quartz.

Quartz will make listen/spot checks when not needing to make a double move. In general Quartz will try to stay within one move action of Valen, and preferably 5'. This is a low priority however.

Use Skate from Power stone on Lightning. Begin hunting for the opponent with Double Moves on Lightning. Valen will ready to fire on sight.

Once contact has been made attempt to stay beyond a move + medium spell range for the opponent if a caster, or beyond charge range if a melee opponent.

If an opponent gets within range of Entangling Ectoplasm, use it. If opponent has a better ranged attack bonus (or is spamming magic missile) try actively to get to range of Entangling Ectoplasm, then keep around 30-60' to cast again. If opponent has a better ranged attack and better mobility just shoot.

Use any consumables reasonable (I.e. Antitoxin if opponent looks like they'll use poison, reapply skate,etc)

Attempt to recover all equipment afterwards (including Arrows, dropped/thrown daggers, etc).

Mort Noir padded through the streets, pondering where to go next. The Loyalist's compound had recently been the subject of a burglary of several hundred gold pieces...a small amount relative to the guild's massive resources, but the act was a theft all the same. Lia Mortineillia had sent her out to find and eliminate the source of this problem.

And then she had heard the news: that the dark ones were to blame. Apparently the dreaded Drow were trying to get a foothold in the city, and they were testing the guilds of the city first.

As she treaded softly down the crowded street, she made sure no one could see her. She spent the entire night attempting to ascertain where the enemy might be...and finally a windfall came her way. A drunken construction worker speaking of some strange new architecture being built in a warehouse on the south side of the city near the Psi Consortium. Spiderwebs made of stone everywhere, statues of spiders, and other alien looking pieces of artwork.

That was all Mort had to hear. She immediately vacated the tavarn and headed to her next stop...she had recently heard of legends of a warrior suited to take down such an enemy. It was even rumored that he had recently taken down two such enemies without suffering a single wound!

Again, she was off to weaving in and out of the crowds of Gladius. Finally she came to a part of the inner city. If her sources had told her correctly, he liked to dwell in this part of the city...on one rooftop imparticular. On approaching the building, she noted that a horse with a rather large diamond afixed to it was standing at the base of a ladder.

She climbed up the ladder and immediately recognized him from the rough descriptions she had been given before. This was Valen Sky.

She had expected him to be somewhat older....and more concious of his surroundings. He seemed oblivious to her right now: He was watching closely a building accross the street. "Wonderful!" She thought. "Here he is, the rumored drow hunter...even now, he is scouting out what is obviously a drow household of some sort, planning to kill the evil creatures...."

With that, Mort decided an introduction was in order. Clearing her throat somewhat, she made certain to have her hands spread out in a universal sign of "I mean you no harm" and stated simply, "Lady Lia Mortineillia sends her greetings and salutations, Sir Valen. We have recently become aware of a threat to our fair city of Gladius...from a dark, insideous source. She thought it prudent to send me and formally invite you to The Loyalists, for we believe your specific skill set would be most helpful in battling this foe. Perhaps you have heard of the dark elves?"

With this, Mort smiled. She could somehow tell that this was going to go well.

Valen looks up, slightly startled from his observation. "Huh, what?" For a second his gaze defocuses and he seemingly mumbles to himself, "Quartz, you useless piece of rock...". His attention immediately returns to Mort, while at the same time shutters from the building across the way can be heard closing. Loudly.

This news is definitely worth investigating..."

Suddenly his expression becomes considering, and once again his gaze darts across the way, then settles back on Mort. "Wait, so you are offering me to join Lady Mortineillia's cause? Hmm... This has... Possibilities. Certainly its possible this threat is greater than something I can handle by myself. Although hard to know without some more legwork. Access to the Loyalists information gathering resouces would certainly help me greatly in that regard." For a second Valen's voice drops, and Mort barely hears "And certainly the prestige of working with the heir to the throne could help some of my other endeavours..."

Valen continues, "So let me get this straight, I'd join Lady Mortineillia's group, gaining access to her resources in exchange for my services in doing what I'd do anyways? So what's the catch? There has to be a catch..."

Mort looked slyly from side to side, as if checking to see if anyone was within earshot on this rooftop. She then whispered, almost too softly for Valen to hear...."Of course, not all your duties will revolve around hunting the Drow...there are other tasks we need your services for...but I can tell you about the goblin and the book another time..."

Then seeming to relax a bit, obviously not wanting to delve any deeper into the topic she just mentioned, Mort cheerfully & simply said, "And off we go, do you mind if I pet your horse?!"

And with that she immediately started scooting down the ladder as fast as her small legs could take her, and she walked up to the horse to pet it. Lightning responded kindly, it was apparent she had a way with animals. "Oh, I bet he would make great friends with Stylo..." she said in a voice that seemed almost distant...

And with that, she started to dart away, almost too fast fast for Valen to keep up.


On the way you can engage Mort in any more conversation you want. Upon the end of the journey through the city you will be free to invade the drow stronghold :-)

Valen yells out, "Quartz! Get Lightning ready!". Suddenly the rock hanging on Lightning's saddle sprouts tiny legs, which attach themselves firmly to small pieces of rope that lead off to the bit and bridle. With a small tug from the psicrystal, Lightning turns and approaches the ladder. At the same time Valen focuses inward, causing his eyes change becoming golden in color and his pupil's to become vertical slits. Then with cat like dexterity he grabs the ladder and flips down, releasing at the low point, and lands on Lightning's sadle (Reduce Fall by 10' 1d20+5=19 (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=909#35290), Success, plus Fast Mount 1d20+8=25 (http://www.hwx.it/wizards.com/dice.php?sid=909#35291), Success), and in one smooth motion urges him to a trot following Mort.

Valen calls out after Mort "What the hey, you only live once! You've got a new member!".


I'm more than willing to just cut to the chase at this point, or the stronghold in this case.

And yes, I know Valen doesn't have tumble yet, but he will at ECL 11. In character he has it, just not rules wise. :-)

And I was actually expecting him to fall flat on his face... Go figure...

My schedule this weekend got really backed up & whatnot...so I just had Hirm send me tactics for an unseen opponent. As follows is the fight.


Valen approached the compound mounted on his faithful steed. Bursting forth through the front gates after a few moments of preparation, the very sight of the well-known drow hunter caused a ruckus like none-other. Drow warriors went running every which way...Valen Sky shooting them down easily as they fled.

When his kill count began to reach the higher twenties, three warriors came from the inner compound. They weilded two shortswords each, and their very bodies burned with angry fire at their fallen comrades.

Thus the battle began.

Valen Sky started off with two buff rounds.

Round -1: Drink anti-toxin vial
Round -2: Manifests Animal Affinity(Dex)

After this, Valen charges through the gates and continues to buff while going through his courtyard.

Round 0:

The three Drow apply buffs to themselves. (protection from good potions) They are on a balcony of sorts that overlooks the yard.

Valen Sky manifests force screen.

Round 2:

Drow begin to descent the somewhat large staircase towards the yard.

Valen Sky manifests Precognition Augmented(+2) and rides away from the staircase

Round 3:

Drow hit the bottom of the stairs and move out to attempt to surround Valen.

Valen manifests Prescience & successfully breaks through the loose net of drow trying to corner him.

Round 4:

Drow warriors run towards Valen

Valen rapid shots at one of them:
